I am an computer enthusiast. When my wife allows, I get to upgrade. Been researching a long time between dv6 6172,6173,6180. I wanted the i7, a good graphics card, and able to do video editing. This computer came in a good packaging, brand new. I did not have the same experience of an earlier review. The silver brushed metal is beautiful. My only three minor gripes are the added hp software that i dont need, no back-up dvd(but you can make one), and 6gb memory instead of the typical 8gb. Upgrading though is easy. Also noticed that when i detached the bottom panel to see the configuration, its kinda scary that you can break the panel, then you end up with a messed up laptop. Anyway, I dont plan to keep opening that panel. Everything works.

Beats audio was no improvement from the previous altec lansing, but its also not that bad either. I am extremely satisfied with this and had to go through different laptops before stuck with this. HP is committed to service.

Out of the box the Windows Experience Index was:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz 7.5

Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB 7.6

Graphics Intel(R) HD Graphics Family 6.6

Gaming graphics 6.6

Primary hard disk 5.9

After running through setup, the first thing I did was visit the HP website to download the latest graphics drivers. This is a "must do" step to assure maximum performance from the machine. The system will default to the onboard Intel HD graphics unless it detects a graphics heavy application. You can click on the Catalyst Control Center in the system tray then click on the Power Tab "Switchable Graphics". Check the box for "Show a pop-up warning for unassigned applications". This allows you to select between Power Saving (Intel HD) and High Performance (AMD ATI 6770M). You want to set High Performance for games.

The graphics drivers are "HP specific" so you can't just download the latest drivers from AMD. You have to wait for HP to put their stamp of approval on them. I wish manufacturers would rethink this policy. They do this to simplify support for their systems but they sometimes handcuff gamers from needed (or wanted) performance updates or bug fixes.

F.E.A.R. benchmark with Computer: High and Graphics: Maximum (1366x768) the results are:

FPS:

Minimum: 31

Average: 47

Maximum: 78

FPS Distribution:

0% below 25 FPS

28% between 25 and 40 FPS

72% above 40 FPS

Far Cry 2 Benchmark Tool results for 3 loops (set to Ultra for the Short Ranch test):

Average Framerate: 34.91

Max. Framerate: 45.84

Min. Framerate: 30.14

I've played games like CoD MW3, F.E.A.R. 3, the Crysis series with their highest settings for 1366 x 768 without so much as a hiccup. Surprisinly, many of the games play well on the Intel HD graphics at lower settings.

Everything works as expected. The machine has a light around the touchpad which I find to be distracting. You can toggle it using "fn space". HP slathers on the bloatware so expect to spend some time removing it.

I brought the machine up to 8 GB of ram using Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM Notebook Memory and used Memtest+ 4.20 for 24 hours to validate the memory.

This is an excellent laptop for general use and gaming. The performance exceeds that of my year old Qosmio X505-Q894 excepting the screen is 15.6" versus the 18" on the Toshiba.

I expected the machine to have higher gaming performance. It does, you have to make a bios adjustment to tell it to use the ATI 6770m graphics when plugged in instead of allowing it to choose Intel or ATI Graphics.

To make the change, tap the ESCape key while the computer boots. You will be presented with a list of things you can do. Select item F10 BIOS SETUP. Then select System Configuration then select Switchable Graphics. Change the selection to FIXED. The FIXED forces use of ATI 6770m when the computer is on external power.

The revised benchmarks are:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz 7.5

Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB 7.6

Graphics Intel(R) HD Graphics Family 6.9

I'm very very happy with this laptop. I wanted buy a laptop which should had a core i7 processor and a good graphics card for several purpuse, so I decided buy this. Design is just amazing, it's beatiful and feels cold!

To do a quickly review, we have:

Keyboard: It feels good, is confortable to type in, although is plane (it doesn't have concave shape), but keys have a good size, besides the light in some keys is very usefull in the night, like wireless wifi (bluetooh), capital locks and mute.

Touchpad: It's very easy to configure and get exactly what you looking. Is very sensitive, soft and big. Comes with a driver called Synaptics, that allows change all the settings, it's very intuitive.

Also have a blue light border that turn off when the touchpad is off.

Screen: Is glossy but I love it, the intel graphics driver provided by catalyst (graphic card driver) allows configure bright, saturation, contrast improving view in a huge way, looks awesome.

Speakers: Are good but not great, sounds pretty high and can be configure to get a better quality. I calculated that are 4 in total, 2 in front and 2 more. Overall are good but zero bass.

Noise: I'm a little impress with the HP Coolsense driver that allows changed the frecuency of fan cooler (useful when you don't want to hear noisy and annoying sounds). Lower noise, lower performance.

Temperature: It's good. On the right side (touchpad) it's cold and on the left side it's warm. I did a medition with core temp and got: in idle state: 45 -50 C, and under load state: 70 75 C, which is good for a quad core processor.

Graphics Card: Completely awesome, I did run The elder Scrolls: Skyrim in details high and looks pretty good. Although i preffer run it with medium details like indicate the wizard game. I pretty sure that can run almost everything and I happy with this. The temperature didn't exceed the 75 C (100 C Max by Intel)

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv6-6180us Entertainment Notebook PC - Gray

This is my second HP laptop in the DV series and I've had it for about 3 months now (I kept the old one for 5 years). I'm a software developer so the laptop is mostly used for programming and database tasks.

The first thing I did was to upgrade the hard drive to a SanDisk 240GB SSD (disclosure: I work for SanDisk). Then I loaded up Windows 7 64-bit and it was easy. HP has all the drivers available and they were pretty easy to find.

With an SSD this laptop is extremely fast. It boots in a few seconds and even intensive programs like Visual Studio and SQL Server load fast and never pause.

The function keys are mapped to the quick task buttons by default (play/next/previous/volume/etc) so I had to go into BIOS to switch that back to normal. I'm sure the quick tasks are much more useful than function keys for most people, but programming editors use a lot of function key shortcuts.

The only other thing I don't like about the keyboard is the arrow keys. The up and down are half-height and I always have to look for a second to find them. Other than that, the soft Mac-like touch of the keys is great and the full number pad is nice.

I was surprised that I actually like the fingerprint reader. I've had one before and it was worthless, but the one on this laptop is actually convenient and useful.

Overall everything works great, it's very fast, and I'm really happy with this laptop.
