The first thing I noticed when it came out of the box is how light it was, but it also did not have the battery in it yet. It looks and feels really good and the weight is fairly well balanced. It is a large battery and appears to function quite well for hours without a recharge. The battery adds a good deal of weight, but it's a very light notebook for it's size. If your are looking for a laptop under 5 bls with a screen this size and a DVD drive I'm not sure you would find one under $300 or even $400 dollars.
The laptop's screen is very bright maybe too bright. Fairly easy to adjust the screen seetings via the function keys on the keyboard. I also found that when the screen is tilted back a little (away from you) the picture looks better and has more deep rich colors that really pop! I've enjoyed watching a DVD movie on it with no noticable issues.
It has a chicklet style keyboard, which in my opinion is good because of easier cleaning, but it is not does not light up, which could make it easier to see the keyboard in the light and the dark. At this price point I was not expecting a lighted keyboard. The touchpad is larger than I expected it occasionally gets in the way and moves the mouse and or clicks on an object. I'm thinking about just turning it off and using a wireless mouse.
The audio was not the best, but I was not expecting great sound. I boosted the levels to 100% in the application that came with the laptop (Sonic) and it did improve it to acceptable levels. The webcam is built-in which is nice, and it works about as well as what you would expect from a budget laptop which is not that good. I ended up making an extra $30 purchase for a pretty good Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD AF 720P 10MP Webcam
because it works well for Skype.
Speed is pretty good especially once you remove the moderate amounts of bloatware. If your not going to wipe and replace the operating system (Make sure to backup before you do) then I would recommend fully uninstalling the security software (virus, firewall, Microsoft Office trial etc...) that comes with the laptop via add/remove programs or Revo Uninstaller. I also would replace them with use a free products that have worked well in the past like avast! as a Antivirus. If you need or want an alternative to MS Office perhaps OpenOffice which is also free will meet your needs?

I got one this model on Black Friday 2011. Mine had a small problem with the "5" key not working in the top row. I took it back where I purchased it from and they got it straightened out. Since then it has been behaving very well.It runs quite cool and quiet. The screen is brightly lit; almost too bright for me even at its lowest setting.(I just got rid of an old Dell D620) The speakers sound nice for this price system and the included Sonic Focus audio enhancement software really does make an audible difference.
One of the things I like most about this notebook, and ASUS in general , is its style. I really like the combination of different textures that they finished this machine with. The battery does decently enough. I get right around 5 hours out of mine, but I'm not a "power user" by any measure of the term. I can say that even the lower end Radeon HD 6290 graphics solution does a passable job of rendering some PC games. They'll probably play, just not well.
I was really quite amazed to find a registration card for FREE ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION for 1 year. That's right, FREE. Most retailers hit you up pretty hard for an extension of basic warranty coverage. To think that ASUS GIVES you 1 year of ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION against drops, spills, electrical surges and fire for FREE, that blew my mind.

I bought this Asus model over a year ago and have had no problems with it. I mainly use it for surfing the net, some e-mail and a few online games thrown in. I have not used the camera/microphone function much, but it appears to do the job when provided with adequate lighting. When just playing online games or surfing the net, the battery will last a tad over 5 hours and charges quickly even while the computer is in use. I don't store much on the hard drive, as this is a secondary computer, so don't have any issues with the storage capabilities. I also only use the programming it came with no Microsoft Office Professional in use to test the processing speed, as the processor is slow; however, for an under-$350 price tag, I'm very satisfied with this Asus laptop and would recommend it for a casual user who wants to get away from the desk!Honest reviews on Asus X53U-RH11 15.6' LED Notebook - AMD C-60 1 GHz - Mocha
