There is soooo much I can say about this laptop.

Let's see where to start...

1. Arrived on time straight from Amazon in the Sony Vaio Box.

2. Packaged really securely, nothing difficult.

3. Very beautiful. Much prettier in person :-)

4. It's not heavy, but it's not light either lol.

5. I was a bit terrified of learning how to use Windows 8, but luckily there is a "Desktop" tab on the homepage that will take you back to the Windows 7 set up, for those who are afraid of Windows 8 like I am!

6. The "Left" and "Right" click buttons that are usually on the touchpad are not visible but they are there. You just have to press the left and right sides of the pad and you'll feel them.

7. Isolated keyboard is nice because the keys are soft almost as if they're padded. They're not hard, make your fingers feel like they're touching soft rubber or something similar (I can't find the right material to compare the keys to lol)Also, the keyboard lights up automatically when a key is touched. This feature can obviously be turned off and on by the user.

8. There is a whole set up with user names and passwords and color customization when you first turn the computer on. It takes about 10-15 mins.

9. My battery went up to about 4 hours and 4 minutes at only 75% I think it was....so when I fully charge it I'll see if it goes up even higher.

10. I've literally only had it for 13 hours so far haha! And I'm IN LOVE!!!

11. OHHH HOW COULD I FORGET? SONY made me proud of them for this one: SPEAKERS are TREMENDOUSLY L-O-U-D!!!! you could host a party with using just the speakers haha! Went on youtube while the television was on and it blasted out the tv! So, if you can find a GOOOOOOOD quality external speaker, you'll never need headphones again (only if used to not disturb others)

12. Gosh...I think that's all that needs to be said now.....the layout is one that users have to get used to....luckily my curiosity allowed me to click "desktop" and I was back to the Windows 7 that I know and love lol (so no mental breakdowns for me lol)But I do like how you can switch between both Windows with the click of one button. The button with the 4 squares next to the left Alt button. I think it's called the "Windows" button lol. (duh)

13. But yeah....I HIGHLY recommend this laptop to any and everyone. I have had my SONY dvd player for over 2 years and my hp laptop was tripping out a year after I had it, and finally just STOPPED working after 3 yrs, so I said, "Hey, if my dvd player is to little, but carries such a loud sound and has such good quality, I'm gonna save some money and buy myself a new SONY laptop"...and SONY you did NOT disappoint! 5 stars :-)

I was extremely picky when I decided to buy a laptop since it is my first one. I have read numerous reviews that had actually helped me lean away from many other laptops that I thought were perfect, so I hope that this review will be just as helpful. I had bought it because it seemed to fit my needs and was very up-to-date with plenty of hard drive space and RAM. I thought I had a good grasp of what I was getting, but there were many little things that actually happened to work in my favor. I've had this laptop for about a month now, and here are the facts that I find most useful for potential buyers:

To begin with, this laptop carries only Windows 8, and cannot be converted back and forth between 7 or 8 (at least not out of the box), as I had seen on reviews of almost identical model (and incorrectly assumed this one had that feature as well). If you have never used this version, I would strongly suggest reviewing Windows 8 before purchasing this laptop since it it very different than any other Windows version (it is strongly based on apps). I was extremely upset to discover this since I had an xp computer and very used to the format. After getting used to it though (and deleting a lot of the pointless apps that were already on there) it is actually a very handy and time-efficient way to maneuver between programs, just my opinion though.

As one of the negative comments mentioned, the product IS extremely poorly packaged. It consisted of a lot of space one crumpled sheet of paper, and then the cardboard box that contained the laptop. I am by no means surprised that that reviewer received his broken. Fortunately, mine was completely fine. Unlike that review, the laptop looks amazing and certainly does not feel like it is made from the same material as "a plastic spoon," as I believe he described it.

I have read on other Vaio laptops, that the touch pad is just awful, which I confirmed when testing out another model. I didn't really mind, since I liked mice better anyway. Luckily, this touch pad is more than I could ask for. It is fairly sensitive, so you barely have to touch it to click something, but all these features can be adjusted as well. I really like the two-finger scroll feature. In some of the laptops I've used, this function is awful and scrolls halfway down the page with barely moving (and it was a function issue, not a sensitivity issue), but it is really nice on this one. I don't even think I'll need a mouse at this point because the pad is basically just as versatile.

The light-up keyboard is very nice, I just wanted to point that out. The battery life is bout 4 hours when fully charged, and that's with my screen up to full brightness, since it seems a little dark at any other setting. The speakers are pretty quiet. I can have them up to the max and its nothing; I anticipated that though, and knew I wanted external speakers even before buying this laptop. Camera works just fine. I know this, but you need a special program, such as Windows Movie Maker, to turn the camera on or record anything since nothing of this sort is already installed. I had not known this and not sure if that's common, but it's really not a huge deal since Movie Maker is free.

A very specific and personal comment though. Windows 8 is not compatible with the Chrome Toolbox Extension, which I liked specifically for asking me every time to close all tabs when multiple are open. Without it, Chrome just closes the window, and I've mistakenly done that a few times. But that one slight downfall for me to Windows 8.

Just a personal preference that made me really happy: The top of the laptop can be opened without holding the bottom down. :D

The time it takes to turn this computer on/off (about 4 seconds) is incredible. Another pretty huge plus is that this laptop never gets hot on the bottom. It is always either neutral or very slightly warm even after hours of use. In addition, it is also a very quiet laptop.

There was some bloatware that I deleted (I had to look up what was needed or not, since the list was pretty extensive), but like I said before pre-installed apps were pretty bad. I uninstalled nearly everything from the main screen.

Lastly, Kaspersky antivirus program is downloaded as a trial for 30 days. It was nice at first, until every time I closed Google chrome and re-opened it, it stated: "chrome did not close properly, would you like to restore the last session?" This led to the fact that I couldn't even save any Favorites to the browser, because it supposedly didn't shut down correctly, and were deleted when I opened it back up. Well this got me really upset until I realized it was this program. I got rid of it (since it was a trial anyway) and the problem was solved.

I think that's about it, feel free to ask any more questions! Sorry if I wrote way too much, but I believe anyone buying this laptop should know these facts.

Well designed and nicely priced. The processor is nice and fast with the "turbo" feature makes this a great mid level laptop that works as fast as a expensive +$1000.00 laptop. I use it for making music and DJing and I have had NO CRASHES nor problems. I highly recommend this laptop. HDMI port; Three USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0; Start up is very fast! Dual core makes switching programs or working on two programs at once easy and fast. Doesn't heat up to my surprise, you could actually have it on your lap for long periods at a time and does not cause discomfort. The built in speakers are ok for personal use, do not expect it to blow the roof of or fill a living room. Back lit keyboard is nice and can be adjusted to turn off if not in use for "X" amount of time that you tell it to. Battery consumption is ABOUT RIGHT... The Win 8 OS is pretty cool once you get used to the "APP" style of working with the laptop... I recommend not to but the extended warr. with anyone other than SONY since they offer it cheaper and you know it will be good since it is direct... Anyways I recommend this laptop hands down... The product arrived in perfect condition. I have owned Sony Vaio's before and love their aesthetic look and also their functionality, the only con to Vaio's is the fact that they are very fragile so I would recommend it for someone who can actually take a lot of care of them. The operating system is fantastic, windows 8 is better than windows 7 or vista or any other OS you might have seen before. It does have a visual impact at first that might scare a lot of people, but its simple to use once you get used to it. The lack of a start menu is not big deal, the start menu has simply become the metro "app" looking start screen of win 8. Most programs run on a windows 8 view mode, if you do not like that view you can easily switch it over to "desktop mode" (same view as win 7) such as with Google chrome. For some programs where you cant switch such as Skype there are two versions of it, you can have the win 8 version of Skype or the "desktop" version of it. As for speed, the computer, processor and RAM is marvelous. I have not tried playing games on it but my old Sony Vaio ran FEAR 2 and COD so I am pretty sure this new one with higher specs must run it perfectly wit no lag. So far the screen has an amazing resolution, the keyboard feels smooth to the touch, the computer fan is quiet and it does not over heat. I bought this computer for college and it seems it will be simply perfect! This computer is simply marvelous for the price it has!

***EDIT 01/15/13***

The computer had some issues with hardware. It stated it had an error and requested me to restart it to fix the issue. Upon restart it scanned for errors and claimed it was repairing drive (C:). The "repair" started looping. I tried accessing safe mode to try and restore the computer but it would not let me access safe mode. I accessed the settings of the computer and tried resetting the BIOS, but had no results since the looping continued. The only option I had left was a reset to its factory settings which in fact resolved my issue, but I lost all my settings and information.

***EDIT 01/28/13***

Again my computer encountered problems with hardware. This tame when the computer requested a restart it DID scan and repair drive (C:). Upon restart it informed me the problem was some drives and system files from Windows. It seems that the error is not from Sony or with the laptop but rather with Windows 8 drivers. I am currently out of the country and will not return to the USA until August or September, but upon calling Sony they said that once I am in the country I can send the computer in for servicing and they will fix my driver issue. I am planning to buy an extended warranty on this computer just in case to avoid in complications in the future, Sony informed me that I can purchase the extended warranty up until my 11th month of purchase of the laptop. At least this time the error was fixed and the computer did NOT have to be reset to factory settings. I shall continue to update in case any other issues arise or if the issue with the drivers persist.

***EDIT 02/24/2013***

A month has gone by with no issues, no Blue Screen's of Death no driver errors. I removed the error message notification system that came with the Sony computer. I started to realize every single time I had an issue with the computer before happened right after the error message notification system flag popped up. Disabling seemed to solve the issue (now I really do believe it is a problem related to a missing file or some sort of issue with the notifications of errors). I will still send it in to Sony once I am in the USA to get it checked and hopefully fixed so that the computer can run perfectly even when the error message notification system is enabled. I will continue to eidt if any other problems arise or the original problem persists.

When I got this laptop, it was unbelievably awesome! First, I like the color. Instead of black, Sony had multiple colors laid out for customers to choose in their favor. Second, the resolution quality. When I watch movie, I feel like I don't need the blue ray since the quality of the screen is so great! This laptop is also quiet and super fast.

The keyboard is smooth.. I just cannot live without this laptop.

The only thing it needs to be fixed is probably the camera from Windows 8.

Anyway, I have no regret to choose this pink Sony laptop because it seems no different from Mac, and it is lot cheaper.

Now I usually don't write product reviews. But in this case I will make an exception. Simply because I know how frustrating that it can be purchasing a "QUALITY" laptop on a limited budget.... Now I have used and am familiar with HP's, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, and etc., etc, and for the sake of continuity I will not include in my review any experience I have with Apple being as it's a completely different O.S., but that being said..... I love apple and I love this Lenovo. As I've stated I am on a limited budget and I desperately needed a quality laptop for a good price. Now I don't know about most consumers but if I'm going to fork out ANY of my hard earned money I am going to make sure I do an extensive amount of research.Especially when it is potentially hundreds of dollars. That being said. I did this and if you are like me even that is not enough... Trusting other people and biased reviews and such. But with this computer I searched high and low for a great "fit" in terms of performance, functionality and all around usefulness and I took a chance on this one. By taking a chance I mean I had never used any lenovo product but being as they are consistently rated in the highest echelon of laptop manufacturers I took the leap and I must say that all around (for the price range, and even significantly above) this is the best lap-top I've ever used. The Keyboard is phenomenal, the functionality, and ease of use is just great. The only Gripe I have and I mean the only is the fact that a significant number of programs that have been standard on previous lap-tops I've used " I.E. microsoft word, office, etc." do not come with the laptop but in trial version only. All in All great computer, extremely fast, durable and funtional I hope you enjoy

I spent weeks researching computers with help from some experts and this laptop was brought to my attention. It was by far the best deal that I found. I was looking at Dell Inspiron's on Amazon for roughly the same price, but they either lacked the processing power (1.5Ghz) or had far less memory and/or hard drive space (this one has ~750gb).

I only received this yesterday, but so far it has been an excellent purchase for the money.

I did hear lots of negative things about Windows 8, but so far I'm surprised to say that I like it. I hear that Windows 8.1 update will come on 10/17/13 so hopefully that will add back the start button.

The touchpad on this computer allows for a 2 finger scroll, but it is reverse direction and should be able to be set to regular. Minor issue, but I hear this will be fixed if it hasn't been already. In the meantime, I'm getting used to scrolling like I do on a smartphone.

Great deal... super fast.. K button on the key board has to pressed several time to work... Windows 8 will make you want to pull your hair out at first... you get a refurbished computer... you gotta expect something gonna be wrong. You just hope it's not major in the long run... still running good.. I'm just glad it's the K button...If it was a vowel like A or E or I...then that would be different story...

I am more of a Mac user usually, but I need a windows machine occasionally, and this is far and away the best piece of hardware I have ever had (in case you wonder, I also have a thinkpad X200 and macbook pros of all sizes). The hardware spec is very similar to the last generation of macbook pro (same graphics card, similar CPU), but this is a 3lb machine, vs a 6lb mbp). The SSD is blazingly fast, the machine never gets even slightly warm (despite the fact that I usually run a number of CPU hogs on it), the keyboard is amazingly comfortable (It has a similar chicklet layout to the MBP keyboard), the screen is phenomenal (by contrast, the Thinkpad screen is much too dim). I am sure there is a bit of bloatware, but I don't notice it (256GB is a lot of bits), and the default browser is Chrome. Windows 7 is the most usable Windows release yet, which may or may not be saying much.

To comment on another review: I am very much a unix person, but if you want to run unix on a laptop, just get a mac, and certainly DO NOT get a sony. Sony has always made slightly incompatible hardware (I got my first Sony ultraportable in the late 1990s -same problems). That said, I have NEVER had a linux laptop which ran properly (Thinkpads, Dells, Acer, you name it). Power management is always goofy, the display drivers are always a little off, etc, etc. Run linux at home/work, and use a vnc client to connect, if linux is that important to you. Every single old unix hack I know carries a mac (that includes some of the fathers of the open source movement) -essentially every useful piece of linux software runs (sometimes better) under OSX.

Anyway, giving two stars to the Vaio because it is not a unix box is like giving two stars to your ferrari because it won't go offroad (or conversely, to your landrover because it can't keep up with a mustang GT from a light). Use the right tool for the job.

I would recommend against purchasing this laptop. I purchased this in April 2010 for $2300. A month or so later, I started seeing lines on the LCD screen which I thought were dirt marks form the keys on the keyboard. I tried to wipe it off, but it didn't come off. Apparently, the lines are scratch marks caused by the keys on the keyboard. The LCD screen is designed to be too closed to the keyboard. The scratch marks are in the shape of the keys. Contact Sony and at first, they blame it on me for scratching it and said it was outside of warranty. After reasoning with them that there are no other signs of damage on the laptop (no signs of puncture, drop, or other type of accidents", they retracted their claim and provided the repair.

You can Google this issue with this laptop and you will see that there are many other people with this problems. I am not the only one. And the responses from Sony have been the same with first denying the problem and then blaming the customer.

This is my third "Z-series" Sony Vaio (I previously owned a VGN-SZ750N which replaced an earlier VGN-SZ680N).

The VPC-Z116GX/S is awesome. Its lighter, faster and with Windows 7 64-bit Professional it just snaps along.

The smaller form-factor screen with its much higher resolution over that of the VGN-SZ series takes some getting used to.

I use this (like I used the others) for work and play (I travel a lot) and it is a perfect balance between portability (weight and size) and power for me.

A 3 pound laptop is essential to me. I can't carry the big guys especially when I'm running around airports. Since I've had amazing good luck with all my other Sony products, including a 2005 laptop which my lawyer son is still using to show judges videos in court, and my Sony All-in-Ones, one bought in 2005 and given to the same son who is using it problem-free, and my current much bigger All-in-One, I naturally turned to Sony again, after first trying Macs and Dells. This z-series is a dream. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit pro, which has the capability of XP imaging for 32 bit programs. I have 4 G of RAM, 500 SSD hard drive, 303 ghz speed, a long lasting battery on which I've worked 6-7 hours and still had capacity left on it, a very responsive keyboard, essential to a writer, the bluray R/W drive, and have had nothing but praise for it. The person who downgraded this because it isn't a Linux machine is absurd. It's a Windows machine. You want to run Linux and fiddle with your own BIOS, fine. This isn't for you. But if you want a machine that is light, swift, responsive, and does what all the big guys do, this is your machine. Also, someone said it heated up as he worked on it. I work on mine in bed for hours, and it doesn't get hot. I did, you note, pay for extras, so I paid more than the base price, but it's worth it.

One word about reliability. In 2005, I bought a small Sony laptop and their first All-in-One desktop. I outgrew them, although they never gave me a bit of trouble, and passed them on to my son, who is using them both in his law practice. I also have a Sony All-in-One PCV-AHIL, which is superb, marvelous responsive keyboard, blazing fast and in 7 months have never had a thing go wrong with this either. Ditto my Sony HDTV and bluray player.

I was the first guy to buy this laptop at the Sony store in Beverly Hills-I bought it hours after it arrived. I've had it for about six weeks now. It is an excellent, very high quality and well built machine. It is visually beautiful and the user experience is the best I have ever experienced with a laptop. It is incredibly fast-in fact with sophisticated benchmark programs it runs almost as fast as my custom built desktop i5 machine. Even though it is expensive, it is worth the money. In an odd way, at $1899, it is a good buy.

My only gripe is that there seems to be an issue from time to time with the video card or Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System. This system isn't working out as well as I'd hope. If it was omitted from this machine, it would be a solid 5 star review.

When I first bought the computer it stalled and the video went black almost every time I used it t play video. After I did the software update the problem went away for the most part. Now the video only crashes about once a week. This is why I am only giving it 4 stars. Overall though, I would by this laptop again in a second. It is light years ahead of everything else I checked out and I am not a Mac guy. They are less prone to software and software based hardware complications but they don't advance as quickly and you pay a high premium for lesser hardware.

Only problem is the location of HD memory card reader slot. It is in the front but basically underneath computer. I have to pick computer up to find it and hard to remove a card. If you take a lot of pictures and use HD memory cards you might be aggravated a little. ASUS should move the slot to the side. may just get a card reader to fix this..

Cheap ThinkPad X120e 06112EU 11.6" LED AMD E-350 1.6GHz 4GB DDR3 SDRAM

I had used an earlier x100e, but when I damaged it, I needed a new small unit for easy travel and work. I liked the reviews on the X120e so I did not hesitate to buy it and Amazon and the right price, shipping and tax free values.

Within two days of the unit arriving , I began to realize I wanted a more powerful unit. There was nothing wrong with the unit, i just realized it was so much slower than my work laptop that I did not want to continue. I was happy with smaller screen and the keyboard is really quite good for a smaller unit.

I passed the x120e to my sister and they love it 3 months later.

I feel I can recommend this as you get a good unit for a low price. If you want more, spend more for faster options. I bought a X220 that is awesome...but 3 times the price of thex120e.

Hi everyone, I have been searching for a good laptop so far. I have also experienced a wide range of laptop brands. But this is the best one I have until now. Thinkpad T series are among the best series of the IBM. The Thinkpad T series in general and T420 in particular has very sleek design. Everything is so comfortable for users. The systems is awesome, it runs incredibly fast and smooth, especially it is the coolest computer compared to other computers I had, even at room temperature with full HD video loading. It is plastic cover but very durable and strong. Battery is incredible long lasting. Highly recommended with display type 1600x900.

Having owned HP/Compaq notebooks for business (G6, CQ61, CQ62, NX series) for over seven years, I took the plunge out of HP into Lenovo and am very happy I did. Firstly, this notebook is a "budget" notebook, not a ThinkPad or Macbook Air, and should be compared with other budgets in its price range. It is ultra thin and very light. The 14-inch screen and the near-centered trackpad are best for my uses. Heat dissipation is excellent (no, it will not burn your legs while resting on your lap) and the unit is very quite. The keys are contoured to fit the fingers and require little pressure. The unit lacks a DVD drive but this is a direction taken by manufacturers to reduce weight and cost, and prepares the user for "Cloud" computing.

Aesthetically, upon receiving the unit, I immediately compared it to my Macbook Pro of 2009: sleek, slim and thin but at (what seemed) half the weight. The screen detail and color fidelity are very good for a budget model. The sound quality is satisfactory (as in most notebooks), and whatever narrowness in frequency range exists, it is partially compensated for by a "Dolby Advanced Audio" 10-band equalizer. The single USB 3.0 port speeds data to and from my HP Pocket drive (with USB 3.0) at blazing speeds (unit has two USB 2.0 ports also); wireless sensitivity is above average; trackpad fluidity is close to a Macbook's (smooth!); 4GB of installed memory can be expanded to 8GB; and the HDMI port and 500GB hard drive are essential assets. (Note: A 500GB hard drive model will have 400GB available due to Lenovo using disk space as a "recovery partition".)

I did not order a discontinued Lenovo Win 7 unit but leaped into Win 8 in December 2012 "culture shock!!!" But . . . this is the future for the PC world and even we "old timers" must grow with the times. Win 8 is a "work-in-progress" for sure, and in order to adjust at a more relaxed pace to this OS, as well as get up-to-speed and "productive", I suggest downloading "Classic Start Menu" or "Start 8". These utilities will bring back the "Start" button and menu familiar to users of Win 7, Vista, XP, etc., but remove none of the features of Win 8.

All in all, this Lenovo unit is well worth the money. Again, this is a budget notebook and is not a ThinkPad or Macbook Air, but to me it is top of the line of any budget notebook I've owned.

I've had this computer for 2 weeks now. In that time I have come to realize just how sweet this little thing is. Obviously it is not a powerhouse for video editing or gaming, but for the normal online activities it is very good. I do keep the power setting on high, which seems to improve the speed of my web surfing. Windows 8 seemed daunting for the first couple hours, but it is so easy to customize and it boots up at such fantastic speeds. If you just need a competent little laptop that is inexpensive and has a great keyboard, but it now.

This is a good little computer. It's very slim and light. However, the graphics aren't great: everything has a bluish tint. Also, the mouse pad is just ridiculous. Most anywhere you click it, a menu pops up. You have to be very intentional about clicking it very near the bottom if you want to click and highlight text, for example. I would totally recommend this computer for any day-to-day activities, but I would also recommend getting a mouse. I haven't been using a mouse (I'll get one over the weekend), and frankly it's driving me quite nuts. But everything else is great--fast processor, lots of RAM, lots of memory...Windows 8 is fun, no complaints!

Bought this computer as my work laptop from Bestbuy for about $300. A sleek 14" inch LED display, built-in DOLBY Advanced Audio, though mediocre and low-performance graphics card may put some people off, this Ideapad s405 delivers above-budget entertainment and regular computing experience. Two USB 2.0 ports ,one USB 3.0 port, HDMI and Ethernet wired connection port come in standard these days.

Its display can be optimized for prolonged computer usage without much eye strains, ASUS and Gateway displays were aggravating my eye strains, so I decided the switch to Lenovo. Once I go Lenov, I won't go back.

Flat and small keyboard doesn't work all that well for my hands, given I'm 5"7, though I can't complain. Keyboard features spill-Resistance. I always remember the horrendous spill damage that virtually killed my old Macbook pro screen. Touchpad has a smart touch senser, it helps with my aimless web browsing and getting rid of misuse of clicking.

I have a spare wireless keyboard with a Lenovo mouse. System performance is rated at 4.4 for its lousy graphics performance. Lacking an optical drive makes it a superb lightweight business-tailored, on the go laptop.I can definitely see myself carrying this machine working on the go and writing articles at cafes more.

Battery life:5 hours, standard 4GB memory, I think with its specs and the price I paid for, I'm beyond content with it.Battery life really won't matter, so long its disk data processing speed is acceptable.

Slight overheating issues, I find my laps burning upon resting on my laps. My mistake.

Overall at least I'll rate it a 6 on a 0-10 scale.

Though a netbook, the screen is big enough to get the job done. However, the touchpad's awkward built-in button complicating navigating the already dreadful Windows 8 UI.

The 2.33 GHz Macbook Pros that have Intel Core 2 Duo processors will be able to run MAC OS 10.7 (Lion) when it comes out. These computers are not as fast as the new quad core Macbook Pro models, but they continue to hold up to heavy use. I suggest maxing out the RAM to 4 GB before installing 10.7 this summer. These computers can actually only use 3.3 GB of the 4, but having matched pairs makes the RAM more efficient in these models. 2 GB seems to be fine for 10.6, but 10.7 will be a more intensive OS. People who do a lot of intensive movie editing may also want the additional RAM. I use my 2 GB computer with iLife '11 & on the Internet with no problems, but I don't know about the larger editing software such as Final Cut Pro.

Cheap Acer Aspire S3-951-6646 13.3-Inch Ultrabook

I'm an IT professional and VERY picky when it comes to my laptop. I read the reviews on this and was mixed between the good and bad on here, so I decided to visit a Microsoft Store and check it out on my own. I immediately was amazed how thin and light this was just like a MacBook Air (which I used and had before). I compared this to the Samsung series 9 laptop and although yes I wish it had a non-glossy screen it still beats it in price tag and performance.

Pros:

-Laptop does not show any traces of fingerprints (which annoyed me with other laptops)

-Screen is very crisp and clear. Yes, its glossy but its a "comfortable glossy" like the macbook air

-Keys are very responsive and comfortable. You do have to press a bit more but I easily got used to it.

-The touchpad is the best I've ever used on any Windows laptop. Very smooth and responsive like a macbook.

-Great performance as it has the i5 processor

-Super fast bootup and screen on/off time

-Simple and basic in terms of ports (2) USB and HDMI which are positioned perfectly in the back. I see no need for laptops to have tons of ports on the sides and back adding bulk to it.

-For this price its a steal compared to what other manufacturers are charging.

Cons:

-The up/down/left/right keys are tiny, but eventually you get used to it

-Battery life is not as long as MacBook Air but its still descent for an ultrabook.

-Yes, its true that the click button below the touchpad you have to press very hard (mostly for a right click), however if you go into mouse settings and just enable "single tap" and set up "double tap" as a pop up menu, you will have no need to press down on pad at all. This has such amazing trackpad drivers that I can glide through pages and screens with no effort.

Overall, don't let the Acer name or price fool you, this laptop is a gem and best design, performance and feel I have ever seen outside of Apple. I bought mine from a Microsoft Store which has the Microsoft Signature service (basically they re-load the OS with no bloatware). If your in the market for a Windows 7 thin, fast and on the go laptop, this is the one for you!

I had this ultrabook for a week now and I can say it's amazing so far. It's thin, light, fast and comfortable. It looks good, it's quiet and cool (I mean temperature). Before I bought this I read all the reviews available online. I completely understand the reviewers have to criticize something but for me this computer works perfectly well. For example, many people say that the keys are too short. In my opinion the keys are comfy. The screen is not the best, but it's very good. This is not a gamer computer; it's for the ones that need to carry it from one place to the other. Taking into account its size and weight, I couldn't expect more from this machine. I come from a ThinkPad that is a heavy duty. I can see this computer is not as strong as the ThinkPad, but it's on a different league if you take into account the price you pay for one of the smallest computers available.

The Core i5 it's powerful enough for the tasks I perform (Web, Excel, Word, some Photoshop). The SSD for "instant on" works as magic. You open the computer and its right there asking for your password (if you setup one). Battery life seems to be good although I can imagine it will suffer in the long term as I'm not able to remove the battery when it's plugged in. On normal use (internet, mail, and few YouTube videos) you get between 4 and 5 hours. I haven't tried playing a movie yet, but I guess you'll get enough power to watch it all the way.

So, I won this thing on the Acer A Day Give Away. (So I might be a little biased, cause they just gave me a free computer.)

I was sort of in the market for a new laptop, and I really was not looking for a ultrabook. I'm more of a big clunky machine with a big screen and all the bells and whistles type of guy.

Imagine my surprise when I got this thing and have found that I really, really like it. I don't have an issue with the noise, nor do I mind the lack of CD drive. I think the start up time is fast, and the laptop overall is a great little machine. It feels really sturdy to me, despite the light weight. I really like that it does not get hot... like, at all. I had it running on battery power for nearly 4 hours the other day, shut it off, and felt the underside. It was tepid.

I read reviews before I got the laptop that the keys were an issue. Some people complained about the keys not having the right amount of heft, which caused them to miss keys, or were unable to hit the arrow keys. Again, I like big things. Big keyboards included. That said. I don't have an issue, at all with the keyboard. I've not had any problems with the arrow keys. In fact, my only issue so far is that there are no dedicated function keys. There are function keys, but they're not dedicated (That is I'd like to have a volume control, playback controls for video, etc.)

I'm a big fan of the multitouch trackpad. I love that I can use gestures to make stuff happen. Took me a while to figure out how to use them correctly, but now that I have, I'm enjoying it. My only complaint is that you cannot create your own gestures, and can only use a predefined list of finger motions to trigger a predefined list of actions -at least, using the stock software (I do not know of alternate software at the moment).

Beyond that, it came with a lot of bloatware. Easily fixed, but a minor annoyance.

Edit: Exactly one year to the day after I received this thing, the trackpad stopped functioning properly and I cannot penetrate ACER's paywall to their warranty support. Absolutely no one has helped me with this. They're being very, very unhelpful and that has completely changed my opinion of this product.

I would not buy this computer again, nor would I have any future business dealings with ACER because of their (obviously) well timed product failures, and refusal to help their customers.

I bought the laptop for $799 on Amazon.com around Jan 2012. After it arrived, it worked OKAY. The track pad was not nearly as responsive as in a larger laptop, or in a MacBook Air, but no big deal. I can adjust to that, and I did. But there were significantly worse problems.

First problem Defective Wireless Card. (See also, e.g., the 2-star review by "The Inveterate Scofflaw 'J'"). On random occasions, perhaps once every one to three hours of use time, the wireless adapter just goes out. *POOF* No, it is not that I went out of network range, etc. Rather, the computer acts as if I had manually disabled the wireless, and there is nothing that can be done to bring it back. Rebooting will work, and I realized later that putting the computer to sleep, which takes much less time, will also cure the nuisance. So I have had to do that, usually once every several hours, randomly, whenever the wireless card craps out on me. This was not a big deal, as it usually takes no more than 10-15 seconds total to put the computer to sleep and wake it up. The quick sleep-awake response, to be fair, is a nice aspect of this computer.

Second problem Defective Hard Drive. (See also, e.g., the 1-star review by "frank"). About one month after getting this computer, I was using it on the train when all of the sudden I got a blue screen. Upon reboot, I keep getting an error message and windows will not boot. I google the error message, and learned that it was indicative of hard drive failure, and that other people whose laptops sustained a physical impact have had that message. My computer never fell. As a result of this, I shipped the computer in to Acer, and they ended up replacing the hard drive (just as I figured). So all my data was lost. Not a big deal, I only had it for a month, but still, but be warned!

My computer arrives in two weeks or so, and the invoice says that a new hard drive was installed. So far so good, but one day later, the computer starts doing clicking sounds randomly, and then I get a blue screen. Upon reboot, the clicking sounds (which are annoying an scary, think about fingernails on chalkboard) continue and I get an error message about have no boot drive.

Conclusion: This computer was a bad decision, and the problems discussed herein are likely a product of Acer trying to use sub-par technology in an ultra-thin laptop. MacBook Air laptops, for example, all have solid state drives -no disk drives. I think having an actual disk drive in such a thin computer is asking for trouble. Similar issues may have been with the poor contact between the wireless card and the mainboard.

At any rate, I am happy that Amazon.com has a very easy return policy for defective computers.

I usually do not write reviews, but felt what I read was not correct. This computer is great. The keyboard which some have said is bad is not the case. I had an Apple laptop and found it similar. The screen is great and I've got Slingbox which is TV internet and it looks great. The small buttons on the right get real!! no big deal. This things starts up before i blink!! The speed and connection are great!! I did a lot of research before buying and when I clicked send in the buying cart, I initiallly had remorse as I was wishing that I was being too cheap and a few hundred would have made my life complete. When i got the computer. What a great surprise. The top is great. As for plastic, it does not feel cheap, but smart in cost. Also, my Mac was hot on the bottom, this computer is cool on bottom. Not sure why but it is. The layout is great. The hinge is fine, no problem that I see that some reported. Love the keyboard, which the experts said was lacking. Still not sure what they are talking about. I can buy almost two of these computers for what the others are charging. No Brainer!! Buy it!! P.S. They came out with a new one that is $1400 with SDD and i7. Get the i5 not that big a difference to pay $700 extra.

Finally I can travel and work from home and not look so dorky with a fat windows laptop. This is thin, sleek, sturdy. And it is 14". The reviews I've looked at compared its width and depth (same as MacBook Air) and height (a smidge higher).

I was worried that the chicolate keys would be unsatisfactory (compared to the great keyboards of the past) but I'm getting used to it and am able to type quickly.
