I am definitely satisfied with the purchase, good price, excellent computer.

it just has one issue when connecting to wifi, it seams to have low "antenna" capacity, though it works fine when the wifi signal is good.

I got the laptop factory refurbished. It didn't have even the smallest scratch.

The only problem is the know wifi issue. With some (not all) wifi routers, the wifi speed decreases dramatically (down to 6Mbps).

Apart from that, super fast, didn't encounter any work or multimedia task that it couldn't handle.

I am a Sony Vaio user big time. I bought this because it was a good deal at the time and I have to say I did not experience any of the things mentioned in the other review above but it is not sony quality either. As my first Hp it did not make a great impression. I guess when it comes to laptops anyway you get what you pay for. The functionality of it was fine but the track pad wore a lot faster then what I am use to and the letters on the keyboard are beginning to fade after less then 2 years just small things like that but to me it made a big impression.

I Received this as a gift brand new from my husband for Christmas. Within the first 30 days the hard drive crashed, luckily still under warranty, called hp they replaced the hard drive with a Toshiba new or refurbished hard drive. The screen went black and would not operate, so I took the battery out and put back in, HP wanted $ money for customer support on this when I called because it was now out of warranty. This Computer continues to freeze and hang & becomes very unresponsive constantly. I like my old hp better it is a lot faster and it was a 2007 model. This is constantly slow & unresponsive and lost all patients with it & only being not even 2 yrs old. I will probaly not purchase another HP again. I should of took this back to the store from day one. Very disappointing to have constant freeze up's and saying to you the page is unresponsive do you want to wait or kill the pages annoying for windows 7..

After 4 months of use, I still believe this is a great laptop/notebook for the bucks. I haven't had any issues with this computer at all! I love the slim build, and it's pretty feature rich for the money. And the display is very crisp and clear.

A note about battery life. If you want this system to run 5-7 hours then you need to by the ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor version, not the Core 2 Duo. The ULV is designed to extend battery life and conserve power. Make sure you do your research before marking something low for what it's not designed to do.

Some have commented on what this laptop does not have as a reason to give it a bad rating as well (ie. like not having a VGA port or an internal optical drive). Again I say do your research and read the specs! If it doesn't have what you want -don't buy it. It's meant to be light and portable and that's exactly what it is. I carry it EVERYWHERE often, including much travel, and have had no issues. It's well built and doesn't scratch easy. No, it's not a ThinkPad build, but if you want that, then buy a Lenovo, not an HP.

The only criticism I have about this computer is that it collects fingerprints easily. More of an annoyance than anything. If it bugs you too much, buying a laptop skin will take care of this issue.

Finally, if you get a lemon, send it back! This applies no matter the brand of computer.

Overall, I'm VERY pleased with this laptop. I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND it -if it fits your needs.

-------------------

First, let me explain my criteria. I was looking for a thin and light full functioning notebook with more power than a netbook (of which I've owned two) and less than $1000 (which was hard to find until now), with an integrated webcame (which most laptops come equipped with nowadays), and that could handle streaming video from sights like Hulu, netflix, etc. HP has gotten the combination just right. With a processor that beats the standard 1+ ghz in a netbook, a large 13.3" matte widescreen, weighing under 4.0lbs, and under a grand, the Probook 5310m is a great buy.

Pros: 2.26ghz processor

13.3" widescreen (1366x768)

2gb Ram expandable to 4gb

Extremely thin

Nice, slim, business look eye catching

Quick access web and email buttons

Matte screen

Chicklet-layout style keyboard

Sturdy and stylish build

Average batter life 4 hours w/ a balanced power setting (and yes, I've tested this!)

Great security software included

Cons: Runs warm (but not hot) when streaming/watching video (most laptops do however)

Fan is sometimes loud

No VGA out port (requires a displayport to VGA adapter)

I've owned the Probook 5310m for just over two weeks now and have used it everyday! Overall, this machine has done exactly what I've needed it to do. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on. The speakers are weak, but that's to be expected. I rarely use the unit speakers any way. The sound is more than sufficient through headphones or connected to my LCD TV.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and operating multiple screens at a time is a cinch. I've also done video editing on this computer. Although not as snappy as my desktop, the Probook 5310m handled it just fine and without hickups.

The Probook 5310m does not come with an optical (dvd) drive, but thin external drives are avaiable nowadays for around $50 bucks. Since I rarely use a dvd drive I was actually looking for a system without one to keep the weight down.

So, for the money you're paying this notebook is a great package. If it fits your needs, I highly recommend it. BTW, it's great for students and frequent travelers. I did some video and document editing while traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday and found it a very easy experience.

Great buy!

I was looking for thin and light notebook with extended battery life, my options was to get Asus 10-12 hours battery life or Acer TimeLine 7-8 Battery life, I use the notebook usually for web surfing and remote access to my servers. So the processor power or speed not the same priority as the battery life,

I saw this notebook and HP representative assured me that it will run for 6-7 hours, I check HP website and I found the same, so why don't give it a try.

The machine is nice and light, but I was surprised when I tested the battery and found out that it run for only three hours with all the wireless communications and blue tooth switched off and no applications are running. I did the test several times and I get the same results.

I called HP support and the recommended to replace the battery, so I did. The new one it butter than the old one but still runs for 3.5 hours also without wireless of Bluetooth.

Now for the last three weeks and I'm trying with HP support, with lo luck, each time I speak to support eng, I have to explain the situation to him, and I have to convince him that as per HP this notebook should run for 6-7 hours and I have to send him the links to HP website and finally he tell I will get back to you.

Today I was surprised to know that my support case was closed by HP, simply because they don't have answer to.

So if you're looking for extended battery life to get this machine because simply it will not give you what was announced by HP and also to avoid HP support that the only help you will get "I WILL GET BACK TO YOU"

My last laptop was an HP Envy, and I needed a new one, that had Beats Audio, touchscreen, Windows 8. This has been one of the best purchases on Amazon. Good price, Sat shipping., exactly as if I went to the store. SAME specs. The only other option I would have liked as a "bonus", would be a backlit keyboard. But I LOVE the fingerprint reader!

I have had it for only a month and tragically slipped in water in my over flowing laundry room with this laptop tucked under my arm. The corner of it hit when I fell, I was sure the screen was going to be shattered. It put a small gash in the corner of the screens border. Seriously the worst place it could have hit and the screen is untouched. After crying and being all upset how I could have injured my brand new laptop, I realized I got out lucky and need to tell people this thing is durable. BTW my laundry room is tile.

Anyone interested in buying this particular model please stay away from it. Lenovo Ideapad U510 model has a very known hardware issue with the ELAN touchpad. I returned this model exactly for the same issue. This issue is known since Dec 2012 I believe. See the following link:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Jumpy-and-Laggy-Touchpad-on-U510/td-p/952467

You will literally find 14 pages filled with customer complaints. The discussion thread stopped when someone from Lenovo support acknowledged it as hardware issue. Lenovo is shameless that it is still selling this faulty model just to clear its inventory. Looks like they prefer their own interests over ours. They should have recalled this model and come up with a new model that fixes the touchpad issue and discontinue the U510 model altogether.

I bought this Lenovo laptop to replace my old Lenevo Thinkpad bought 6 yrs ago. I thought Lenovo was a great brand but I will now shop for either HP or Dell.

I purchased my U510 at another retailer (same spec and price) and must say this is a great laptop. The screen is crisp and clear, the keyboard is a joy to type on and the speed meets my needs. The style of the laptop (like a journal or notebook) with the same color top and bottom is very cool and gets glances when I am carrying it around or using it.

Great perforemce at a great price.

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

I ended up getting this same computer (refurbished) from the Lenovo official outlet shop for $450. For that price, it is a steal, but for what they offer it here for, it is definitely overpriced, because there are problems with it:

The touchpad is quite annoying, as it jumps when scrolling down otherwise ok.

The wifi does go off often for inexplicable reasons (on battery and everything, still unstable) had to get the official drivers with the connection utility from Intel to be at least able to troubleshoot it efficiently.

The battery lasts pretty long, some 4 hours, so that's fine.

Also, for some reason, sometimes when I close the lid, it goes to sleep, sometimes it turns off (although I set it up to go to sleep only), so I don't know what the deal is with that.

ALSO, there was a huge problem with the online sign-in to Windows8 with my (or any) Microsoft account initially (it was impossible, gave me an error every time) and I solved that by changing some registry (do your research and you'll find a solution), and it looks like Lenovo has a broken copy of Win8 that they are putting on these computers, otherwise the system has worked fine.

Moreover, beware, the speakers are really, really quiet, it's kinda ridiculous.

Oh yeah, and the last problem (I'm aware of) is the annoying beeping when the battery is low. I did all the research and no, it is not possible to turn off in the system or in bios, anywhere you just need to mute ALL the sounds, then it goes away. That means that you are not able to play any other sounds at the same time.

So yeah, there are many issues with this. I'd say the best thing about this computer is the design and a good keyboard, otherwise don't spend more money than you have to, there are other models from other brands that work much better for this price!

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Do not buy this...The keyboard is really bad and my fingers hurt if you try to type fast. They are really expensive and there are sooo many model which are cheaper and better then these.

Of the fifteen or so laptops I have owned over the years this Lenovo right out of the box was the worst I have ever owned.

The touchpad was so sensitive that the machine would not stay on the page that you were looking at, and when it did the mouse pointer was jumping all over the screen. Wireless connectivity was limited to 5 10 feet from my new Cisco router. It seems that both of these problems have been written up extensively on the web (Lenovo laptop problems) for the last few years. Unfortunately I did not see them before I bought this machine. It has since been returned.

The only drawback I have with it so far is the weak speakers but I did not necessarily buy it for the speakers much more the functionality of a laptop. I also dislike how the swiping method from outside the mousepad onto the mousepad alternates open windows but I am sure I can edit that once I figure out more of the operating system.

Seller experience: It was a bit confusing due to the fact that the seller sells products on both Amazon and Ebay. I wanted two of these units however one sold on eBay during my purchase of two. I had great feedback from the seller and we cancelled the order and I just had to reorder the one he had left. It was tedious but at least he is up front and honest.

This is a sturdy, fast, dependable, neat professional computer with very few compromises.

I get 4 solid hours of battery life while working with large files in graphics programs and connected to the internet all the time. This is how I measure battery life. Measurements with dim brightness and doing almost nothing are nonsense to me.

The keyboard layout, tactile feel, touchpad and peripheral ports are all well laid out, strong and functional. Every component works great. The computer creates almost no noise and very little heat after you update the BIOS.

Strongest characteristic is that I have used it intensively for 3 months and it has never crashed. The outside appearance is still top notch, thanks to the great quality metal finish all over, with no cheap plastic that starts scratching or disassembling after a few weeks.

People tend to look at it and ask the brand name and model, because its clean aesthetics stand out in a world of laptops full of snazzy motives and funny useless gadgets and gizmos.

I only have 3 complaints:

The trackpoint falls off. Not sure if I should glue it in place and shut up.

The 1600x900 display is outdated and there is no better display option. It lacks contrast and brightness compared to today's mainstream laptop displays. My eyes suffered initially but I got used to it. Pickier users wouldn't tolerate it and return the computer.

The speakers are cheap garbage. Even my Blackberry sounds better and louder :). Anyway I frequently use headphones, so I tend to forget about this issue.

Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXB 14-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 3 stars
Buy Now
We purchased this laptop October 30th, 2012. We would have given this product 5 stars if not for the problems we have had with getting it to turn on. We were very happy with the smaller 14" screen, how lightweight it was, user-friendly, seemed to have a long battery life and we loved the way the keyboard lit up when any key was pressed. Here is the one major problem we've had. We have had this laptop less than 2wks. and we have had nothing but problems getting the laptop to turn on after going into hibernation, sleep and after being shut down. We have tried everything. We made sure the battery was fully charged, took the battery out and reinserted. We tried googling the problem to see how others fixed this problem and even called Sony Vaio Support. One time it would turn on, the next time it wouldn't turn on at all. We repeated the process all over again and sometimes that would work, but more often not. We are feeling very frustrated & disappointed. We have decided to exchange this laptop for a replacement of this exact model and hope the one we are returning is just a fluke. Aside from the problems we have had with this laptop not turning on, we have been happy with this laptop and would recommend this model to others.

The screen is bright, clear yet easy to read in environments with overhead lights like a library. It does not have glare problems to the extent my HP Pavilion does. The keyboard has good ergonomics and layout with no distracting flex. Backlighting is helpful in low light situations. Battery life is excellent. I was in a four hour meeting taking notes with Outlook receiving messages the entire time. The battery life showed 50% and another four hours remaining at the end! The synaptics touch pad works great once one does two things:

1) Turn off tapping in the device settings. I don't know why tapping is enabled by default on most laptops with touchpads. For the vast majority of people it just makes using a touch pad much more difficult.

2) Become adjusted to the button positions which are under the single large touch pad towards the bottom.

Windows ReadyBoost improves disk performance. I am using a SanDisk Extreme 16 GB SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Flash Memory Card 45MB/s SDSDX-016G-X46 which I formatted as exFat.

Here is the first issue I had with a fix:

Machine: Sony VAIO E Series SVE14122CXW with windows 8

Problem: DVD drive not recognized in explorer or device manager.

Attempted to configure for auto play and inserted valid DVDs to no avail.

Sony support via online chat thought it was a hardware problem and I would need to return machine. Having dealt with HP, Toshiba and Dell support over the years I have found you don't get people with in depth knowledge and troubleshooting ability doing support. I tried some different things on my own and found a fix.

FIX:

1) Put bootable DVD in machine (like windows 7 bootable install media)

2) Power machine down

3) Wait 1 minute then power up

4) Keep hitting spacebar during boot

5) When windows 8 starts, it recognizes the drive and remembers it going forward!

What looked like a Sony hardware problem was more likely a Windows 8 problem.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXB 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

I had really high hopes for this laptop. I was particularly interested in the Sony VAIO E Series for its price point, the build and design, it has good specs, and I loved the idea of having a backlit keyboard as this feature is more in high end laptops and was getting out of my budget. I looked up numerous YouTube videos and models for a solid week or so and came down to this particular one for the price, color, and screen size.

First impressions were good. I loved the packaging and box, and upon taking the laptop out, the design is absolutely gorgeous. It's very sleek and sharp.

The problems then started coming as I was setting the laptop up; first thing I noticed right out of the gates.

A whole section of my backlit keyboard was defective. I even took it into a dark room and tested it constantly and fiddled through the settings just to make sure I didn't have a incorrect setting enabled or something needed to be enabled.

The laptop was uneven on my desk. You could push down on one side and the laptop would slightly wobble. I tested this on several desks and counters around the house.

The hard drive constantly made a scanning noise, even when the laptop was idle, I double and TRIPLE checked processes running in the background, but for some reason, the laptop began to be really noisy and there was nothing I could do to subdue the noise coming from the HD.

The touchpad is an absolute nightmare to use. Scrolling is choppy, the cursor skips everywhere on the screen when typing.

I've owned many laptops ranging from HP, Toshiba, Apple, Dell. This was my first Sony VAIO product and I had high hopes as Sony is always known for their quality VAIO line. I was extremely taken back and disappointed on this model. I had high hopes and REALLY wanted to like it as its the best looking laptop around this price point.

I don't know if I got a lemon, but based on these models posted on Amazon, the reviews are very scattered from 1 star to 5 star ratings. It seems that the quality control and testing maybe wasn't very thorough. I will be returning this and maybe expanding my budget a bit to get something with more quality control, because this laptop needs some serious work.

I loved this computer. After doing lots of research looking for a computer to suit my needs I settled for the Sony Vaio E series. The keyboard is phenomenal Beautiful backlighting (a novelty to me), no keyboard flex (great because I type frequently and quickly), and the keys themselves were awesome. The screen was very bright An all around very attractive computer. Startup time was also great... UNTIL:

Within 24 hours of having this computer I started noticing glitches within the mousepad. Very frustrating. Also, after stalling Windows 8 "updates" my computer completely crashed. I spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support while my brand new PC had to completely reset. Needless to say it was a nightmare. It just froze on the start screen and wouldn't work even after restarting!

Finally, though I realize this is not Sony's fault -My initial excitement was detracted by the fact that I soon noticed there was a small, but undoubtedly worsening crack in the plastic material surrounding the black trim of the computer. There were actually some wires exposed. Also, upon arrival the keyboard was popped out of place While this is insignificant because ultimately the keyboard was fine, it is extremely frustrating that Amazon ships their products in these states.

Ultimately, I wish Sony should have kept their Windows 7 E series around a little longer.. Definitely avoid.
