I actually bought this model [a few weeks ago] w/ the I-3 Core Intel processor at Best Buy [online] for $499 w/ free shipping. I'm a IT/Network/Computer professional so I knew that the difference between the I-3 and I-5 processor is not all that great, and just boosting the RAM up to 8Gb [on this laptop] gives you plenty of operational efficiency and speed. Also the 7200 rpm hard drive gives much faster data transfer than the [standard] 5400 rpm found on most laptops, so [with the HP 4540-S] the extra cost of the I-5 is a waste of money AND if you're going to "step up" you should really go to the I-7 processor.

The features on this laptop are very good and the authentication/security software is excellent. I especially like the efficiency, speed and added security of the facial recognition and fingerprint authentication, which is uncommon for a laptop in this price range. I will also point out that most of the "problems" people have talked about here with the 4540-S are very easy and fast to fix by those with a reasonable knowledge of computers/software/hardware/protocols, but most people have minimal [troubleshooting/resolution] skills [and] "bite the dust" when confronted with the simplest difficulty.

NOTE; This particular item has the 5400 rpm hard drive, so find one with the 7200 rpm HD

So all you need to do is add 4Gb more of RAM [$40] and you're good to go with this laptop.

So far so good, nice laptop. Will let you know if there are any problems in the future. bye bye.

After my beloved $300 toshiba satellite died I spent weeks researching windows 7 laptops and ended up with this computer. It seems well made and has some good features. Processor is pretty fast as well. This problem is with the mousepad. This is by far the worse Iv'e ever encountered. Some of it may have to do with my skin? I say that because the pads that are really smooth and shiny like my toshiba had and the asus have work really well for me. This one sucks. Can't use it. It has no response to my fingers. Sometimes I have to hit it 7-10 times before it will click. I will move my finger all around and the cursor won't even move. I see why people over pay for macbooks.

I needed a second laptop to carry with me when I travel. I didn't want to put a lot of money into it but I still wanted a good computer. This was just the thing. Love this computer. I get all the bells and whistles that a brand new one would have. Even a 1 year warranty. I also wanted Windows 7 NOT 8.

(July 15, 2013) Still love this computer. However, I just wanted to add a review on the seller, Blair TG. After having the computer for approx. 3 weeks, the latch hung and I could not open it. I contacted Blair TG and they immediately sent me a return mailing label with instructions on how to package. There was absolutely no problem on the return/repair. I received the computer back after a few days and am still happy with it. Love Blair TG customer service and would HIGHLY recommend them.

I wanted a cheap computer for the uncomplicated tasks which I need a computer for. I had an ASUS which was junk and a HP that I loved but cost almost 800$ by the time I was done buying it. This one cost 257$ and works like a dream. The keyboard feels like a real keyboard. It is guaranteed for 1 year and at that cost I don't care if I throw it away. It is very fast and never freezes like my ASUS junk pile did. I can't foresee ever buying another new computer when I can get one that fits my needs as well as this one does, at this price. This one has windows 7 that I required, but they sell them with many different os in them to fit your needs.

We ordered this having full expectation that we got a great deal for our daughter's college needed laptop. We were very disappointed in the product. The disk drive wouldn't work, and it came with a virus that required the disk drive to work to get rid of it. It was a hassle to have to pack it up, send it back and start back at square 1

I'm not gonna get all fancy about this review. I wanted to add this because someone gave it a one star when this deserves nothing lower then a 5. If you want to game, this is your machine. Seriously, SuperRAID, Steelseries keyboard, Killer Network, 24gb ram, 1tb hdd, 4gb NVidia GPU, New Haswell, and MSI...need I say more. Ok maybe, how about Matrix display allowing 3 external screens used all at once. Read my comment to the 1 star review if you want more info. Or, just buy it.

My intention was to replace the 1 TB HDD that comes with this model with my Vertex 2 solid-state drive that I used in the Alienware I previously had. Hah.

The design of the MSI GT70 requires you to pull off the entire cover if you want to replace the hard drive. Or access RAM. This necessarily involves destroying the sticker that invalidates your warranty. Yes, in order to replace a hard drive or a RAM stick on this laptop, you have to void your warranty.

Second, the laptop didn't seem to play well with my Vertex 2 SSD. It works fine as an external drive in an USB enclosure, but when installed internally, it often wasn't available when Windows booted. When it was available, it kept going offline it disappeared from both File Explorer and Device Manager on a whim, and didn't reactivate until a reboot. I had to order a new SSD, a Samsung 840 Pro, to see if that will work better.

Third, the laptop crashes about 2 out of 3 times when it boots. I'm using the original Windows 8 installation that came installed on the laptop as delivered; the only change I've made was to apply Windows updates. Literally, two out of three times, the laptop will either freeze or blue screen when booting sometimes with MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, sometimes with CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. This is with my SSD, or without. I have to keep trying to reboot until it works, and I'm never quite sure it'll run this time.

Fourth, the Page Up and Home key are one key, so you have to press Fn + PgUp to access Home. Likewise, the Page Down and End keys are one key, so you have to press Fn + PgDn to access End. This was a genius choice by some incompetent keyboard designer that needs to be fired. Imagine how this works with text editing. Want to press Ctrl + Home to get to the start of the text? You better get used to Ctrl + Fn + PgUp. Want to press End to get to the end of the line? You better get used to Fn + PgDn.

Fifth, the BIOS on this laptop is intended for Windows 8, and it's hard to install Windows 7 on it. Several BIOS options need to be changed, and then, the Windows 7 installer complains that a DVD driver is missing. I resorted to using the Windows 8 that came installed.

The standout feature of the XPS 14z is that it has a 14-inch display housed in a chassis of a 13.3-inch notebook. Apart from the all-aluminium design, the narrow bezel is the first thing that you'll notice as the laptop boots up. The display has superb brightness and clarity good for gaming, HD video and everything else in between. In terms of build quality, Dell has kept up with XPS tradition and used metal extensively. The entire shell and palmrest is brushed aluminium. The backlit keyboard is comfortable to use for long typing sessions and the large track pad responds well with good support from the anodised aluminium and magnesium alloy palm-rest full marks to Dell for build quality.

There is both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet, HDMI and DisplayPort all present neatly on the rear to minimize wire clutter. On the left side is the card reader and audio jacks, while the right side hosts the slot loading optical drive and a battery status indicator. There are heat dissipation vents present on the side, back and bottom useful as with such hardware it is bound to get heated up. The XPS 14z boasts of being the first Skypecertified laptop for video chat. The webcam quality is very pleasing great output, both in terms of video and audio. Another impressive feature of the laptop is the sound. The onboard JBL speakers are loud and clear good enough for a small room.

Overall very pleased with this notebook if you can get it under four figures, it's a good buy considering the build quality and components. It feels like it will hold up to anything, and is very sleek and impressive looking (similar to the Macbook Air).

I have a dell and I love the computer except for the issue with wifi that so many are describing. I had initially thought it was a problem with my router so I called tech support through time warner cable. they came out to trouble shoot my router and found that the wireless card in the laptop is faulty which you can see in different forums online. they turned off what they called the "N" portion of my router and all was good. I was finally pulling the speeds I was supposed to (initially pulling 2mbps with n off getting 19-20mbps). after that it would take several minutes for my laptop to connect to the router and they fixed that issue too although i have no idea what they did there. So the computer is at fault there but there are ways around it :) If you google dell xps 14z wireless card you can find multiple forums about this issue. Hope this helps!

I purchased dell xps14z about a year ago. The product looks quite good. The performance of the dell xps14z is good except for wireless connection. sometimes it is very hard to connect to wireless network unless otherwise you are 1 meter away from the router (then it works okay). I have contacted dell to solve this problem they gave it a few tries but never solve the problem. As I said, the computer is quite fast and the performance of the machine is good. But when you have problem to connect to wifi network, the laptop is not really useful. Now I am always using it with a cable internet as the wifi connection is not stable. Sometimes I am connected after a few minutes I am disconnected and so on. I do regret buying it as it is too expensive and makes life harder.

I have had two persistent problems with my XPS 14z. The first one is related to projecting images for whatever reason projecting images on both the laptop and a projection screen is not possible. The second is related to my wireless network adapter. It is very fickle, and I need to disconnect/connect to my home wireless internet sometimes ten times a day to keep it working. That while all other wireless devices (my husband's laptop, iPad...) are working fine. Now, I understand that not all computers work 100% perfectly and that sometimes things needs fixing. But I have tried to work with Dell on both issues, and they make me do so many things for so long, that I just gave up. You are literally with them on the phone or on chat for hours without having your issue resolved. I don't want to pick the issues up again and waste another five hours talking to them about all the issues I know my computer is NOT having to cut to the chase. I'm so disappointed with their customer service, I'm pretty sure this is the last time I'll buy a Dell (I have had Dell consistently over the last 7 years). Honestly, unless you don't have a job or a life, don't get a Dell!

I got this computer to replace a similar computer that crashed. It works even better than the previous one, and I am thrilled that I got such a great deal on a computer. It was on sale for significantly less than the retail price, which made it one of the least expensive computers on Amazon at the time, and close to half the price of my previous computer. Perfect for me! Just keep in mind that it only has microsoft word and excel for free the entire office suite does not come with this computer.

I'm going to start by stating that I have some biases. I've been a Mac user since 1995, and this is probably my umpteenth Mac laptop. My previous MacBook Pro (Core Duo 1.83 ghz) was bought used at two years of age. I just retired it in favor of this one. That computer was unstoppable, reliable, durable, and dependable. The only issues I had were with the battery but with LiIon batteries if you get more than a year out of one you are lucky. (I use mine on the road heavily)

Now, on to this laptop. The setup is the same as it has been since 2006, albeit with some updates a firewire 800 port, faster CPU, more video memory, etc. It is much faster than my old laptop and works great. Highly recommended.

Now, if you're buying this model now odds are good that it is second hand. Expect the battery to be dodgy but don't fret new ones aren't expensive the BTI aftermarket batteries work good. Otherwise, it's a good durable laptop that will serve you for years to come.

We purchased this laptop October 30th, 2012. We would have given this product 5 stars if not for the problems we have had with getting it to turn on. We were very happy with the smaller 14" screen, how lightweight it was, user-friendly, seemed to have a long battery life and we loved the way the keyboard lit up when any key was pressed. Here is the one major problem we've had. We have had this laptop less than 2wks. and we have had nothing but problems getting the laptop to turn on after going into hibernation, sleep and after being shut down. We have tried everything. We made sure the battery was fully charged, took the battery out and reinserted. We tried googling the problem to see how others fixed this problem and even called Sony Vaio Support. One time it would turn on, the next time it wouldn't turn on at all. We repeated the process all over again and sometimes that would work, but more often not. We are feeling very frustrated & disappointed. We have decided to exchange this laptop for a replacement of this exact model and hope the one we are returning is just a fluke. Aside from the problems we have had with this laptop not turning on, we have been happy with this laptop and would recommend this model to others.

The screen is bright, clear yet easy to read in environments with overhead lights like a library. It does not have glare problems to the extent my HP Pavilion does. The keyboard has good ergonomics and layout with no distracting flex. Backlighting is helpful in low light situations. Battery life is excellent. I was in a four hour meeting taking notes with Outlook receiving messages the entire time. The battery life showed 50% and another four hours remaining at the end! The synaptics touch pad works great once one does two things:

1) Turn off tapping in the device settings. I don't know why tapping is enabled by default on most laptops with touchpads. For the vast majority of people it just makes using a touch pad much more difficult.

2) Become adjusted to the button positions which are under the single large touch pad towards the bottom.

Windows ReadyBoost improves disk performance. I am using a SanDisk Extreme 16 GB SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Flash Memory Card 45MB/s SDSDX-016G-X46 which I formatted as exFat.

Here is the first issue I had with a fix:

Machine: Sony VAIO E Series SVE14122CXW with windows 8

Problem: DVD drive not recognized in explorer or device manager.

Attempted to configure for auto play and inserted valid DVDs to no avail.

Sony support via online chat thought it was a hardware problem and I would need to return machine. Having dealt with HP, Toshiba and Dell support over the years I have found you don't get people with in depth knowledge and troubleshooting ability doing support. I tried some different things on my own and found a fix.

FIX:

1) Put bootable DVD in machine (like windows 7 bootable install media)

2) Power machine down

3) Wait 1 minute then power up

4) Keep hitting spacebar during boot

5) When windows 8 starts, it recognizes the drive and remembers it going forward!

What looked like a Sony hardware problem was more likely a Windows 8 problem.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXB 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

I had really high hopes for this laptop. I was particularly interested in the Sony VAIO E Series for its price point, the build and design, it has good specs, and I loved the idea of having a backlit keyboard as this feature is more in high end laptops and was getting out of my budget. I looked up numerous YouTube videos and models for a solid week or so and came down to this particular one for the price, color, and screen size.

First impressions were good. I loved the packaging and box, and upon taking the laptop out, the design is absolutely gorgeous. It's very sleek and sharp.

The problems then started coming as I was setting the laptop up; first thing I noticed right out of the gates.

A whole section of my backlit keyboard was defective. I even took it into a dark room and tested it constantly and fiddled through the settings just to make sure I didn't have a incorrect setting enabled or something needed to be enabled.

The laptop was uneven on my desk. You could push down on one side and the laptop would slightly wobble. I tested this on several desks and counters around the house.

The hard drive constantly made a scanning noise, even when the laptop was idle, I double and TRIPLE checked processes running in the background, but for some reason, the laptop began to be really noisy and there was nothing I could do to subdue the noise coming from the HD.

The touchpad is an absolute nightmare to use. Scrolling is choppy, the cursor skips everywhere on the screen when typing.

I've owned many laptops ranging from HP, Toshiba, Apple, Dell. This was my first Sony VAIO product and I had high hopes as Sony is always known for their quality VAIO line. I was extremely taken back and disappointed on this model. I had high hopes and REALLY wanted to like it as its the best looking laptop around this price point.

I don't know if I got a lemon, but based on these models posted on Amazon, the reviews are very scattered from 1 star to 5 star ratings. It seems that the quality control and testing maybe wasn't very thorough. I will be returning this and maybe expanding my budget a bit to get something with more quality control, because this laptop needs some serious work.

I loved this computer. After doing lots of research looking for a computer to suit my needs I settled for the Sony Vaio E series. The keyboard is phenomenal Beautiful backlighting (a novelty to me), no keyboard flex (great because I type frequently and quickly), and the keys themselves were awesome. The screen was very bright An all around very attractive computer. Startup time was also great... UNTIL:

Within 24 hours of having this computer I started noticing glitches within the mousepad. Very frustrating. Also, after stalling Windows 8 "updates" my computer completely crashed. I spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support while my brand new PC had to completely reset. Needless to say it was a nightmare. It just froze on the start screen and wouldn't work even after restarting!

Finally, though I realize this is not Sony's fault -My initial excitement was detracted by the fact that I soon noticed there was a small, but undoubtedly worsening crack in the plastic material surrounding the black trim of the computer. There were actually some wires exposed. Also, upon arrival the keyboard was popped out of place While this is insignificant because ultimately the keyboard was fine, it is extremely frustrating that Amazon ships their products in these states.

Ultimately, I wish Sony should have kept their Windows 7 E series around a little longer.. Definitely avoid.

UPDATE:::: 3+ Weeks since I got this.... More bulky softwares(even ones that run during start up) / games / videos have gone in, but the performance is absolutely the same. Audio capabilities of this laptop is simply stunning.... I have a HDTV and a Sony Home theater system. When I connect this laptop to the TV and listen to MP3 songs, the audio output is just amazing.... Made me feel like dancing to the rhythm.... I am comparing this with a 2 year old Gateway laptop that I own (does not have a HDMI connectivity, so use VGA Cables instead... So I understand that I'm not comparing apples with apples :-), but still.... ). I don't use this laptop primarily for gaming... But I did try playing Tales of the Monkey Island in complete high settings, and the video and audio were awesome. Connect it to your HDTV and enhance the experience.....

I went and got this from a BestBuy store near my place.... I actually got to compare it with the core i3 laptops.... I restarted all the systems and then tried opening the programs at the same time and clocked them.... I5 has a way more superior load time as compared to the i3 and Core 2 duo systems. Note that BB has the same softwares installed on all of its laptops (as long as the OS is the same).

I loved the large screen... My requirement was a laptop to be a desktop replacement that would mostly be moved just within my home... So the weight of this product didn't bother me much. If your main requirement is mobility, DO NOT go for this laptop... It can be quite heavy....

After hearing loads of negative reviews about Win 7, I didn't expect too much out of it... However, I am beginning to like it a lot... It has some cool features that I find real user friendly.... Specially the shortcut tray on the top of your screen.... Its so customizable and handy... U don't have to minimize your open windows to access it... just take the pointer to the top portion of the screen and hold for a second or two, and it shows up... No more clumsy icons on the desktop.....

Aero theme on Windows 7 looks pretty stunning too.... Note that this takes a lot of memory though... The configuration on this system has no problems handling it.... I have loaded my system with loads of softwares and still the boot time is amazingly fast... Shutdown is even better....

Battery life is pretty good for a laptop with such huge screen size....

One last thing is this: Function keys are by default set to be used with the "Fn" key only.... For example pressing the F1 key on your keyboard would open up the chose monitor option and not help on a particular software..... In order to do that you will have to press the "Fn" + the F1 key... I felt this to be an annoyance, as I use Alt + F4 to close windows. This wouldn't work as F4 is assigned as a Mute button and the laptop mutes the sound instead....

However, I recently realized that this functionality could be changed by going into the BIOS. Just meddle around the various tabs and you should be able to find that option.... Once you change that to default to Function keys and not Multimedia keys.... everything would be perfect (at least it was for me :) )

Good luck with any laptop that you decide to buy....

I have had this laptop for the last 2 weeks. I just love it. The screen size is pefect. I dont have to travel much so the size suits me well. The laptop is quite fast and the screen is bright (HD LED). The audio is really great. Well one thing Dell ought to have improved is the noise of the fan. Otherwise no complaints.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i1764-6075OBK 1764 17.3-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

I purchased an Inspiron 1764 laptop primarily because the combination of specs, features and price was unbeatable.

The system began to malfunction shortly after I installed basic security and office software. It would not connect to my HP printer. There were local network and driver errors, along with frequent hangs, bluescreen crashes and other problems. Dell tech support blamed me for "corrupting" their operating system and said I would have to pay extra for software service, since their "limited" warranty covers only hardware. I restored the machine to factory settings, only to see the problems reappear. Despite my extensive experience as a computer professional, I was unable to fix the software problems. Internet research showed I was not alone.

These issues appear to be specific to Dell systems, since I have another vendor's laptop also running Windows 7 and the identical application software, with no problems whatsoever. I have been a loyal Dell customer for twelve years, but their consumer unfriendly attitude and lack of proper support left me no choice but to return the laptop for a refund. Readers are advised to think long and hard before choosing Dell.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i1764-6075OBK 1764 17.3-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

This is a huge laptop... But, you know that since it's a 17" laptop. It's quick... pretty quiet. And I also use this as a home multimedia computer. So, I'm often plugging it in to my TV via the HDMI connection. It has no problem enabling and disabling the dual monitor mode when plugged in and unplugged.

The only issue that I have is that it doesn't seem to like to wake up from hibernate. So, I just don't ever hibernate it. Not a big deal for me anyway. And, in my experience with computers, hibernate is a hit and miss thing anyway.

Had this model for 5 months and have contacted tech support at least 15 times. They were and still are unable to fix or diagnose problems. Was sent a new hard drive, still the same problem, which is the graphix and intermitently going to a white screen which after restart goes away. They offered for me to ship it to them I said no but opted to recieve a refurbished replacement. As soon as I recieve it I will put it up for sale and never purchase any Dell product again.

From what i can tell this is the exact same model as the dm4-1160us except with a smaller hard drive. That smaller hard drive should result in a $50 price reduction, but i picked this one up at Office Depot for $ after a $ mail in rebate. Due to the unusually low price i was convinced something must be wrong with this computer, but it's awesome. I've read complaints about the mousepad on the 1160... i'm not sure what they're referring to cause it's been perfectly fine for me, infact its been better than the asus, dell, and compaq laptops i've had in the past.

If you're game player with heavy graphics needs you should pass on this model. But if you're a business users or home user who wants a light, solidly built, good performing laptop with great battery life, then I'm sure you'll love this computer even at a $700 price tag.

Make sure to check the date of the reviews when you review this laptop or buy one. Many of the issues such as the touchpad and power button problem have been worked out and this little puppy is one refined piece of work. its very nice loooking, very light yet very substantial and durable feeling. HP has upgraded many of its parts and such, like the way the hinges are and the use of almost all aluminum with laser engraved detail and this laptop is badass. also, with laptops such as 13 you pay top dollar for lesser specs. the 1160 us comes with the core i5 450, 4 gigs of ram, 500gb hdd at 7200 rpm(pay attention here-most at this price are around 320 hdd running at 5400 rpm. the dm4 1162 is only 320 gb and the 1060us is the i5 430 instead of the 450 like the 1160us has. also the 1160 has widi so you can wirelessly see ur coputer on ur hdtvand you can forget about a fingerprint reader at this price point. this computer comes with one, and a nice little hp light up logo on the lid for a nice little touch.the 1160us also has bluetooth and protectsmart for is hard drive. it has a led backlit screen also. im not sure why the 1160us model seems to be on sale moreso than others bc it has more features than the others too. one model has a wimax card(4g) and u can get this laptop custom with ati graphics if you game which i wish i had bc now im gonna have to get a vidock 2 or something for gaming but at 629 bucks on sale (i got 200 bucks off at staples) you really realy cannot beat this deal. some of you are thinking that this isnt as good a deal as it looks on paper bc of how some of hps older laptops are made but they have seriously upgraded the look and feel of them to aluminum w/ engraving ( brushed aluminum at that) with a light up logo lid sexiness beastly laptop that you will be proud of-take my word for itdont buy the dell 14r or any acer that you will get at this priceget this laptop and email w/ a thank you later.

I bought a similar model 14 months ago, the HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx. Like this model, it looks great and has many attractive features. But it is missing something critical: reliability. The USB ports stopped working the other day. After trying several remedies suggested on the HP web site, I spoke with an HP rep who said it seemed to be a hardware problem and offered to fix the problem for $255. Then if I wanted to extend the warranty another year, they would do so for an additional $100. This system is suddenly much more expensive than the original purchase price. It's now in the territory of a Mac Powerbook, which is more reliable and comes with better service, especially if an Apple store is nearby.

Compounding the sudden loss of USB ports (essential for laptops these days), this laptop has several other reliability problems including a battery that no longer holds a charge more than an hour, a screen that sometimes flickers (apparently a loose connection somewhere), and sporadic failures to come out of sleep mode (requiring removing the battery and rebooting).

No wonder HP is getting out of the laptop business.
