Best HP Envy 15-3040NR 15.6 Inch Laptop (Black/Silver) Deals

I really wanted to like this laptop, because on paper, there are very very few (if any) laptops that offer a similar package at this price point (up to 30% off MSRP after various HP coupons on the web for i7-2620qm, powerful graphics via 7690m, but most of all, 1080p IPS display). However, after 2 months of patience, I can no longer ignore the glaring issues HP has chosen to overlook. First, there have been numerous reports first appearing in forums about users' complaints about the Envy 15 1080p's inability to produce red colors. Since the initial reports in January, numerous tech blogs like the Verge, notebookcheck, and Engadget (among others) have confirmed this issue. While I had tried to overlook the issue myself, the non-reds eventually became far too big of a distraction, especially considering that this was a $150.00 upgrade option. If HP charged $250.00 for a screen upgrade that had a decent color gamut (come on! I'm not asking for Dreamcolor quality or even 95% Adobe coverage like Lenovo offers, just a screen that can reproduce the THREE PRIMARY COLORS!), I would have gladly and without hesitation ponied up the extra cost. I regret that HP chose to cut corners like this, when they were so close to a phenomenal laptop/display. -1 Star for display.

The second issue I take is the keyboard. To be fair, when I first received this unit, I had no skipped/missed keys, and I decided I could live with the slight flex on the left side of the keyboard. But ever since a BIOS update (F.05, for those of you keeping track), which by the way was ON HP's OWN SITE, the keyboard will miss literally about 15% of my keystrokes whenever I'm running on AC adapter (but strangely, I have no problems when running on battery!). The keystroke issue is actually distracting enough to disrupt my day-to-day web browsing (missed spaces and mistyped web addresses are nothing but common); in fact, the only way you are reading this review without typos in every 3rd word is by my proofreading. Again, to be fair, I am understanding of the fact that software/updates can be buggy at times; it's another matter when the manufacturer does not fix these bugs, not to mention refuse to acknowledge the numerous complaints from customers (google for forums in notebookreview.com and HP customer support forum for "Envy 15 BIOS keyboard" and skim through results). -2 Star, 1 each for keyboard/HP customer service handling complaints.

Others have complained about banged up USB ports, scratches, paint peeling, etc., but my unit arrived cosmetically flawless so I will not dock any stars for that.

It is my own fault for waiting 2 months to try to like this laptop and end up discovering all of this, instead of returning the unit within the initial 21-day period. I hope others will benefit from my less-than-pleasant experience with the Envy 15. I will update this review should HP offer any solutions to these and other complaints not even mentioned in this mini-review, but I am not holding my breath.

EDIT 2/21/12: BIOS F.06 also does nothing to address the keyboard problem.

EDIT 3/20/12: I'm adding one star back to my review. F.07 was released a couple of days ago, and I'm happy to report that all of the keyboard woes are gone! Here's to hoping that those problems don't return... I would like to add on a half-star if I could, for the fact that HP's coming around to responding and ACKNOWLEDGING the problems surrounding the Envy. HP recently made a formal (though somewhat vague) announcement about HP's proposal to fix the screen issue. This gives me some hope that the company's at least taking steps to do what it can to remedy the issues at hand. I will update again after seeing what HP ultimately does w/ the LCD problem.

EDIT 5/10/12: HP released a software that allows some control over colors for the display, but as I had suspected, the software doesn't do anything to fix the red/violet issues (I wasn't hoping for too much out of the software option anyway since my research had confirmed the colors are a limitation of the LG panel itself).

EDIT 7/10/12: I honestly didn't think I'd be updating this review again, but here I am. First I have to say that HP's engineers offered better customer concern/service than any dedicated customer service departments, period (Thanks again, Jonathan!). Second, HP contacted me a few weeks ago to ask whether I had the orange-red issues with my panel, to which I provided details about the problem. Long story short, I was offered a free exchange (HP paid shipping both ways), and quite frankly, I wasn't expecting any difference despite the different panel part number of the new panel. Well I was wrong--wrong about my customer service comments above, and wrong about the panel. The new panel isn't perfect or even great by any standard, but it is definitely a noticeable improvement on the original Envy 15 panels' reds. In light of these two points, I'm adding one more star back mostly due to the way that HP decided to handle the crappy-display issue because the screen, as improved as it is, is still only average. Here's a quote from a post I wrote on another forum, describing the difference:

"While the reds on the new panels are still definitely not a natural, deep red, it's a noticeable improvement from the older panels. The red is at least almost on par with my Galaxy S phone, and noticeably but not hugely worse than my Dell U2311h. Reds are noticeably more orange than on my Dell U2410, but I'm not expecting much there because that is, after all, a 118% gamut display. My Envy 14's red is definitely redder, but I didn't expect the E15 to be as good anyway since the E14's panel is 84% gamut, and the E15's is supposedly 60%. The reds are indistinguishable from the reds on my wife's Late 2011 Macbook 15 (1680x1050 panel), and in some cases (netflix website, fullscreen red in Paint), the E15 actually appears redder--and no, there is nothing "wrong" with the Macbook's panel.

It's very hard for me not to expect more though b/c I've been far too long spoiled by the likes of HP's dreamcolor display, Dell's no longer existent RGBLED XPS 16 display, and excellent desktop monitors... yet, in spite of that, I can confidently say that at least the color aspect of the new panels are no better or worse than the colors of a typical TN panel on the average laptop. That said, I always thought that given equal color reproduction, there is little/no reason not to opt for IPS or TN (at least on a laptop), so I think I can lay aside my gripes about the orange-y reds. I can always wish/complain about wanting a higher gamut, but I know that's not what I paid for, nor did HP advertise high-gamut displays on the E15 as they did with the E14."

I bought this from Amazon but I ordered it through my wife's account (she has a prime student) and that's why Amazon is not showing as verified purchase. This laptop is gorgeous, very much a clone of a Macbook pro. I use a Early 2010 Macbook pro 17" for my work, and I can assure you it excels my Macbook pro in the following functional aspects:

1. It has a full keyboard. The Macbook's so called "Full" keyboard is really not that full. Macbook misses all the home, end, page up and page down button. And trust me, even after two years of regular usage, I find it irritating. True, you can use Command + Up/Down etc. combination. But it's really a productivity issue.

2. The Envy's 4 speakers and the woofer combination is really awesome. In fact, this is the first laptop that I saw that outperforms my 17" Macbook pro speaker (both sound quality and volume). Previously I compared Asus N53, hp DV5, Lenovo (forgot the model number) and hp DV6 and all of them had much inferior sound quality than my Macbook pro

3. The USB ports are distributed on two sides, which is really nice

From aesthetics and ergonomics part, it excels my Macbook pro in the following aspects:

1. The corners of the rectangular chassis is not sharp like my Macbook pro, which is really nice. The Macbook's sharp edges cut into my palm everytime I lift it. Even while typing, it feels like a knife against my arm.

2. I liked the back lighting of the hp keyboard better

Now some cons in comparison to my Macbook pro 17 (early 2010):

1. My hp envy 15 power button's painting is already peeling off!! My Macbook pro still looks like brand new (not just the power button). To be fair, the Envy 15 doesn't seem to have any other weak part to peel off, and I am planning to keep the laptop as that minor cosmetic blemish is not a big deal for me.

2. The screen on my Macbook pro still would outperform the radiance display (to be fair, this is the best display of all the non Macbook pro that I have seen (refer to the earlier mentioned laptop models that I played with)). That being said, the Macbook pro 15" display really SUCKS. Refer to my updated comparison with Macbook pro 15" at the end of this review.

3. My 2 years old Macbook pro's 640x480 resolution webcam (yes that's only 0.3 mega pixel) still outperforms this Envy HD webcam (True vision or whatever they call it). That being said, again, to be fair, this is one of the best webcam that I have seen in non-Macbook pro laptops. Particularly, my last attempt with Asus N53SV webcam was horrible! It was sooo laggy and soo horrible quality that it was a deal breaker for me. (UPDATE: I changed my opinion, and kindly refer to my updated part of this review for my current subjective opinion).

4. The touchpad on my macbook pro has NO competitor. It's really awesome, and the hp touchpad can only dream to be of that quality.

Now some common complaint and their solution:

1. The touchpad is horrible, doesn't do smooth scrolling, doesn't register click etc. The solution is to install the latest driver. The notebook review forum has a Envy driver page which is up to date with the latest drivers (including drivers that are still not officially available from HP) and I downloaded a Synaptic driver from that link. It's a direct download from HP server, so nothing to be worried about. HP is probably going to release that soon. The driver was built at the end of January and after installing that, this touchpad is REALLY awesome. Almost as good as my Macbook pro (but as I said, it's still has a long way to go)

2. The two finger tapping has no right click configuration: If you come from Mac world, you are probably accustomed to tapping with two fingers and that acts like a right click. You can install an open source program named TwoFingerScroll (hosted on google codes) to achieve that. After that, IMHO, the touchpad is feature complete (you can configure many options in original Synaptic control panel + TwoFingerScroll)

3. Battery issue, and smooth switching between built in and ATI graphics card: Right now I have fixed mode driver enabled and I am only using built in Intel Graphics, which is more than adequate for me as I don't play games. You just need to go to BIOS settings and set Fixed mode in video switching setting (instead of Dynamic (the default)), and then right click on the desktop and go to Configure Switchable Graphics and set the power saving GPU as the graphics card. That seems to give me around 5 hours of typical usage, where I can edit the documents or browse typical web. Please refer to the updated review at the end of this review for some battery comparison with Macbook pro 17" and 15".

4. People complain that the red looks orange. But that's a common problem of the recent IPS panels (I heard Sony has same problem). And to me it doesn't look bad at all. The notebook review forum has some color calibration suggestion to improve the red accuracy. But I don't think it would be fixed with such a simple solution. So, if you really need a very accurate color output, look elsewhere.

Some features that I really like:

1. The analog volume control: Oh my gosh, that is sooo handy and sooo cute. You really need to feel it to understand how great that feature is. I always got lost between various top row volume control button. Now I never miss volume up and volume down. And they also have a cute mute button next to the analog volume control.

2. Buttonless touchpad: While they copied it from Apple, I think that's really great. Particularly, now you have the whole area as a touchpad and for multi-touch gesture.

Some issues that I hate:

1. The fan sound. It's definitely louder than my Macbook pro (Which is almost silent), and it's even louder than my Asus N53!

2. The left side of the keyboard (a, s, d etc. keys) feels loose (probably people call it flexing??) It doesn't feel solid.

3. I hated the crappy painting that is peeling off from the power button

All being said, this is the best non-Apple laptop that I have ever seen in my life. I am really happy with the build quality and the look (which they definitely copied from Apple), and the laptop is really very snappy (as you would expect from such a high end laptop). Unless the IPS Red accuracy is an issue for you, and you can live with some hit and miss on the build quality, it should be fine. Give it a try, and of course Amazon's excellent customer service would help you get a refund if you are not happy.

UPDATE 02/22/2012:

I now played with the laptop little more, and I also compared it with my brother's late 2011 Macbook pro 15" (The latest model). Here is my findings:

1. Envy's display might be inferior to my Macbook pro 17" which has a full HD (not 1080p) 1920x1200 display. But it blows away the latest 15" Macbook pro's display which only has 1440x900 and you cannot even upgrade that display. In fact, the Macbook pro 15's display looks super pixelated next to Envy's display.

2. I heavily tested the webcam, and compared it against both my Macbook pro 17 and my brother's Macbook pro 15. While the Macbook pro's webcam looks more brighter, it is actually inferior to HP's true vision webcam. The hp webcam gives high color accuracy and more contrast. In return, you get more noise. In a first look it does appear that Macbook's webcam is smoother. But my wife pointed to me that my green t-shirt during testing was looking almost whitish with the Macbook pro (both 17" and 15") webcam.

3. Moreover, on the Webcam part, the HP webcam is buttery smooth. I don't have a scientific comparison. But, I felt like they are capturing the frames at at least 20+ FPS. Macbook pro's Webcam is also quite good. But I felt like they have little bit of lag and not as smooth as HP.

4. Apple actually lost their battery edge! This is particularly surprise to me. My 17" Macbook pro still gives me 6+ hours of battery life. While the brand new Macbook pro 15" actually depletes within 3 hours of continuous video playback! On skype video calling, it was showing me a dismal 1.5 hours of estimated battery life! The MBP 15" battery life is therefore very similar to Envy's battery life. I believe this is because of the quad core processor. Another thing that irritated me is Apple's unwillingness to disable the dedicated graphics card. In my Early 2010 MBP, there was an option in System Preference, where I could disable my dedicated graphics card to save some power. As I never play game, I never use dedicated graphics card. But, looks like in OS X Lion and the late 2011 MBP, they only either allow you dynamic switching or a dedicated graphics card. Neither could accomplish the best possible battery life with just an exclusive non-negotiable built in graphics card (as I mentioned, both my MBP 17 and Envy is currently set to built in graphics only).

5. And finally, I really got disappointed at my brother's latest Macbook pro 15" after introspecting with what he got after paying 1.5 times the cost of Envy:

5.1. MBP 15 has 512 MB of graphics RAM, while Envy 15 has 1GB.

5.2. Envy 15 came with Radeon 7690M while MBP came with 6750M.

5.3. Envy 15 came with 750GB Hard disk, while MBP came with 500GB HDD. Also, Envy came with 7200 RPM faster Hard disk, while MBP 15 came with 5400 slower hard disk.

5.4. Envy 15 came with 8GB 1600MHz RAM, while MBP came with 4GB 1333MHz RAM

5.5. Not to mention the super CRAPPY display of 15" MBP. That itself would be a deal breaker for me.

That being said, would I stop buying a Macbook pro in the future, when such a perfect Macbook pro clone is around? NO. I am a Computer Science researcher and I love the power of Unix. I am writing this part for those parents who often times buy Windows machine for their college going sons/daughters with Computer Science major. I personally believe that for productivity of a Computer Science major, Mac OS X has NO competitor. While Linux could be a viable alternative, it doesn't have any polished software. E.g., when I first bought my Mac, I commented that just for Unix compatibility, Omnigraffle, Keynote and native PDF integration of Mac OS X, I would pay the Apple premium. Linux simply doesn't have the Apps ecosystem. And Windows will never be able to emulate a Unix system as it doesn't have the POSIX layer. That being said, Windows is an excellent Entertainment OS. E.g., you cannot easily stream your media to your TV through a MAC (it doesn't come with DLNA and UPnP support), while Windows 7 is bundled out of the box with all those nice features. I can keep going on. But, my point is, for productivity, buy a Mac. For leisure and entertainment buy a Windows machine. That's just my personal opinion of course.

Update 03/24/2012:

After updating the bios to F.06, my keyboard started missing lots of keystrokes. Fortunately, Amazon was happy to send me another one. The new one came with F.06 pre-installed, but it only missed keystrokes when the backlit is ON. Luckily, HP released their latest F.07 BIOS. And now, all my problems are gone! The keyboard is perfectly working, and thanks to Amazon, I have got a new laptop with no power button paint peeling. So, I am hereby updating my review to 5 star. I know I have gone through lots of ordeal to get to this point. But I don't wanna keep any hard feeling, particularly when the laptop is so fast and smooth, and cute looking.

My previous laptop was a Macbook pro 17" unibody. It was a beautifully built product. I'm quite surprised that I'm just as happy with the Envy as I was with the Macbook.

Pros:

Good build quality. Almost up there with the macbooks.

Based on the pictures, I thought the bottom and the lid were made of plastic. They're made on metal instead!

The drivers and base software bundle is very polished.

Re-install from recovery media is very streamlined and a pleasant experience.

Not a single crash so far.

The 1080p display quality is great. But there are some drawbacks. I use it in graphic design at work.

Quick boot time ad least with an ssd. The bios/post screen is a blink of an eye.

Battery life is good in normal tasks. I haven't tested anything heavier so far.

The gpu switching utility is simple and very useful. You specify which programs you want to fire up the more powerful gpu. That's something I missed on macs.

The usb port which lets you charge devices even when the computer is off is superb. Tablets and phones charged without problems. Now you can charge your phone when it's getting low on battery even while walking down town.

Nice stylish font on the keyboard.

Quite decent connectivity for such a device

Ability to function as a wlan access point and share the internet connection even while you're connected via wlan yourself.

Cons:

The bottom cover wobbles just slightly after a couple of opens. Normally no one needs the open it though. It is opened only if you replace the hdd, memory or battery

The volume levels tend to be to high with headphones and the volume knob. On the first level of volume it's too low and on the second level it's too loud. It kind of takes the usefulness out the knob. I haven't found a way to fix that so far. You really shouldn't need to search for a solution for volume settings.

The displays black levels seem to be quite high. The back light bleeds through quite a lot. On the other hand it's very uniform (led backlight), so it doesn't bother that much.

The power brick is huge and hideous. HP really needs to do something about these. It's a pain to carry them around. I bought a smaller one right away and use the original one only on my work desk.

Super reflective display finish.

Arrow keys are awful.

Recommendations:

I recommend to reinstall everything from the recovery dvd and select minimized install. That way all the non-essential software won't be installed.

Buy an ssd. It makes the world of difference.

Spec wise and all. This laptop is pretty good.

The display is very crisp and clear.

It's fast.

It has a sleek design.

Cool button for changing volume.

Back lit keyboard.

Switchable graphics can save power.

Beats Audio provides great sound through the speakers.

That being said, there are some issues I have with this laptop.

First, as I type this right now, it seems I have to hit my space bar key pretty hard when I use my right thumb since it seems to not respond when I hit it from the right side.

The red is not so red. I don't really care much about it, but it's an issue some of you might not really enjoy.

Switchable graphics not so switchable. Sometimes, it doesn't switch GPUs, but it's not that big a deal since you can simply, no, I advise you to change it to manual switching on the BIOS if you chose to get this laptop, so you can switch the GPUs yourself.

As I feel through the edges of the laptop, it feels uneven. It's not noticeable when you look at it, but you can feel it.

Looks like a Mac book. Originality please.

As for game performance and display, it performs great for the basic games, though it struggled a bit with GTA IV, but I was not on High Performance power mode, so I can't be certain.

Summary: If you are into Photoshop or you do stuff that involves colors, than I'll advise you to stay away from this laptop. If you are just a gamer(casual) looking for a portable gaming machine from this era, and you don't care much about color, then go ahead and get this.

Color-wise, I don't feel like returning it. Keys-wise, I just might.

EDIT(2/21/2012): According to some info I got from another forum, there was a BIOS update to attempt to fix the keyboard issue (BIOS F.06). I installed this update, but it didn't fix anything for me. On the other hand, some people claim that it fixed the issue for them. There was also another fix which would force the BIOS to recover, and some said that fixed it for them while others, like me, still remain with the keyboard issue. I guess right now, it's a game of chance for those with this laptop.

I have also decided to return the laptop since I couldn't bear the missing keystrokes any longer.

EDIT(3/8/2012): Long story short, I couldn't return the item yet, but I was able to ask for an exchange. I received another Envy and this one works way better than the one I got before even though it is still running the F.06 BIOS. The one thing you'll have to do to avoid skipping keystrokes is to dim the back light of the keyboard while on AC (You don't need it to be too high anyway). While on Battery, you should turn off the back light, and that should solve, or "improve", the missing keystrokes issue (It did/does for me) until HP decides to throw out a fix.

EDIT(3/28/2012): Hp released BIOS F.07 update to fix the keyboard issue. I have updated to that version and I am convinced, and can conclude, that the keyboard issue has been rectified. So if you aren't running F.07, get that.

I purchased a custom Envy 15t-3000 directly from HP. I received the laptop 16 days after placing my order.

The laptop was packaged nicely, and the appearance of the Envy was amazing. The aluminum chassis was nice. If I held down the front left corner and lifted the right corner, the laptop only flexed about 1/4 inch. The backlit keyboard is a great touch, and the clarity of text on the 1920x1080 screen is wonderful.

That's where the good stuff ends. The computer cost $1224.99 after using a 30% coupon ($1749.99 originally), which I consider expensive. This expensive beauty cannot perform the simple tasks my $200 netbook does perfectly. I ended up returning the computer for a full refund. Many people in the notebookreview Envy 15 3xxx forums have done 3+ exchanges with HP just to keep getting computers with hardware issues. HP quality control is terrible.

Reasons I returned mine:

1. Terrible trackpad. Two-finger scrolling is difficult, random right clicks, detects palms as fingers while typing

2. Missing keystrokes. Different letters at different times would not register as I typed them. If I pressed T 100 times, it would only register 5 of the pushes.

3. Display. The clarity of text was nice, and I didn't mind the orange issue (reds appear orange), but a 1920x1080 in a 15inch screen doesn't work well. I had to used 150% dpi, which some applications such as iTunes cannot handle well.

4. Audio Issues. Random volume increases and decreases, and many times I had to throw my headphones off my head to save my ears from instant, unexpected pain. The Beats volume wheel will randomly increase volume as it is turned to decrease. Listening on the lowest possible volume setting was still very loud. Static through headphones when nothing is playing. Beats software stopped working after installing updated driver to fix above issues.

5. Heft. This thing was heavy, and it is unusually long making it difficult to put into my DaKine laptop backpack (designed for 15inch laptops).

6. Back up. It took 3 hours to burn the 5 backup disks. No way am I doing that again if I exchange. So, I'm getting a refund instead.

7. Performance. It's not much faster than my Asus UL30vt. My envy had the hybrid drive, and that only took about 5 seconds off of boot times, and 2 seconds off of Outlook open times.

This is the second Acer I've bought in the last 6 months my niece needed a computer, so I gave her my AS5253-BZ602 and got this one for myself. Both have been great purchases. Set-up was easy, there was some bloatware, but not an excessive amount. It runs fast and handles multi-tasking well. The screen resolution is very good, as are the speakers. This laptop has two, which is an improvement over my old Acer's one. There are 3 USB ports but no HDMI, which I don't mind, but some might.

Summing up, this computer is ideal for basic use and at $350, a real bargain.

Best Deals for Acer AS5733Z-4469 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Gray)

Despite being one of the more affordable computers out there, Acer is one of my favorites. I've had Dell, HP, Toshiba and Acer notebooks, but my Acer has outlasted the Dell and the HPs (with HP being the worst). The battery life isn't the best, but that really isn't a problem for me. I don't feel like I need to go out and blow a lot of money on a laptop when Acers are perfectly serviceable and long-lasting.

This is a reasonably fast computer with a decent display.

As with other Acer laptops, there are two things to watch out for:

The spacing on the keyboard is somewhat tighter than on HP and Dell laptops; it can be hard to adjust to this.

Sound recordings, whether made using the internal microphone or an external microphone, are horribly distorted. Curiously, this is true even if the recording level is set quite low. I've tested this on laptops made by HP, Dell, and Asus, and got respectable sound quality on all three, so I'm guessing that there is a defect in the Acer motherboard chip set.

I was looking for the previous model Toshiba Portege R835 P70 for some time. After reading all reviews on portable lightweight laptops, I was sold on it. i5 2410 processor, 4GB RAM, and ~3lb weight were great specs. I recently noticed it had been discontinued and there was no apparent replacement on Toshiba's website. That was until Toshiba magically quietly added this new, updated model to their website last week. The Portege R835 P81 takes an already stout laptop and makes it that much better! Now it has an i5 2435 processor rated higher and 2 more GB of RAM (to a total of 6GB). While it only has a 640GB HDD at 5400rpm, it starts up quick and gets going. I love that it's so light weight and makes my life a ton easier in my day to day operations running my business. I needed portability since I spend the better part of my day meeting clients at homes and businesses, and this laptop does the job. I looked into Macbook Airs, Samsung 9 series etc., but nothing beats this computer for the "bang-for-your-buck" factor. I recommend this laptop for anyone that wants a smaller form factor that will last you a long time.

Update: 1/13/11

This will be the last update. My girlfriend and I broke up and she returned the laptop to me because she doesn't feel comfortable having it anymore. I've sold it on Auction on Ebay for $680.00. This is still a great laptop and I'm truly disappointed I will not get to see it again. I'm thankful for all the positives feedback I've been receiving about this review and I'm very happy to help out. As you can see, the reviews are growing slowly for this laptop so you should feel very confident you won't be disappointed in this laptop.

As for my girlfriend and I, we're not talking anymore and she's gone ahead and purchased her own new laptop, a Sony.

Update: 11/21/11

There was a few problems regarding wifi on this Toshiba where it wouldn't connect to networks that require a password within the browser (workplace or school network where it required your id number/username). We tried using an external wifi adapter via USB and it turned out it still wouldn't connect. I called Amazon and verified with them there seem to be something wrong with the Wifi, it would connect successfully at home or on a mobile hotspot but not at work/school. Amazon was very prompt and got a supervisor approval to send a new replacement laptop with free one day shipping. We tried it out just today at both work and school and now it works just superbly!

I'd like to give FIVE STARS to AMAZON for their great customer support, I've been buying from them constantly since 2006 and they've been nothing but fantastic towards treating me like their VIP customer.

Besides that, we now have a like new laptop again, and I'm not really concern about moving data back and forth to the hard drive because of my expertise in computers. I've been reading other reviews, yes this laptop is quite delicate but this laptop is so light of course it's going to be fragile! The keyboard seems just fine, it's not an exactly nice finish like a macbook but it's still just a decent keyboard. The webcam has not provide much issue, I webcam with my girlfriend almost every other night and I can hear her clearly and see her clearly just fine. She would even point the webcam at our fish pet and I could see the fish even in low lighting!

Currently my girlfriend is a moderate business worker and full time student and this laptop has been nothing but quick, fast, and lightweight for her. Even I'm enjoying playing with it now and then over my White Unibody Macbook.

Update: 11/8/11

Its been over two weeks. The laptop is still running strong and there hasn't been any problems at all. My girlfriend mentioned during her class someone complimented on her laptop stating that it's so lightweight and you don't see many lightweight laptops with an i5 processor. We purchased this case (attached item name below) and it fits perfectly and very easy to put in and out. There has been no issues with the battery life, it's still very long exactly as stated. The wireless connection has been superb. There has been some Toshiba software that may be bloatware, but half of it is actually useful compared to other laptops. Toshiba really focused on making programs that is truly essential for the user.

It's been over a week. This laptop has been nothing but fantastic for my girlfriend. No problems whatsoever. Very quick and fast at both starting up and turning off. There was some skeptical questions regarding the battery life. At 90% it said there was 4 hours of battery left, but once it went down to 70% it said there was 6 hours of battery left. Regardless overall depending on the usage, just surfing the internet and doing light word processing it goes beyond seven hours which is plenty of time away from a power outlet.

I'm a very tech savvy person and have worked with all kinds of laptops from Toshiba, Acer, Asus, HP, Compaq, and Apple. I have to say I'm amazed of how great this Portege is, it's definitely lighter than many of their rivals, and it carries an i5 Sandy Bridge processor, and it's equipped with a large amount of ram and hard drive space.

From Squaretrade Warranty, Toshiba was rank #2 in reliability in laptops with the least malfunctions after three years, with Asus landing at #1. The reason why I prefer Toshiba is because they only make Netbooks/Laptops in the computing world. All the other brands they make laptops/desktops/all in one pcs. Toshiba however, only focuses on portable computing.

I've worked with the previous Portege, the R700 /w the i3 processor. The one thing that blew me away was that it's a 3 pound 13.3 inch laptop. The Macbook Air at the time was lighter but it didn't have an i3 processor. This new updated model though was a great find for me. I was looking around for a new laptop for my girlfriend. She asked for a bigger monitor than her netbook, much faster, and something that would last for a long time.

The screen seems pretty reflective in high lighted setting, say outdoor in the sun, this may boast as an issue for some. However, 90% of the usage on a laptop for many users out there is indoor. When using this indoor I see no problem whatsoever. It plays very smoothly HD quality videos with no lag. The brightness is very bright as well, I see myself turning the brightness down mostly and could still see just fine. It's bright enough on medium setting and it's LED.

The i5 2.4 ghz processor is one of the latest ones for laptop thats just about right for your everyday multitasking job. It also has a turbo boost technology that could crank it up to speed to 3.0 ghz if it needs to under big work overload. This is useful for those gamers out there or those who want to do photoshop.

It has 640gb HD. Usually laptops have 250GB or 320GB but this has 640GB!!! That is twice as big as the average laptop HD size! You will not have to worry for a long time regarding laptop space on this laptop. Trust me, if you're not going to be downloading many movies or plan to put 1,000,000 pictures on this thing, you're going to be really happy wit this large amount of space.

6GB of ram, this is what lets you run multiple applications and windows at the same time. 4GB ram seems to be the average of most laptops, so again it goes beyond the standards once again. You can run ten internet windows, watch a movie, and run a webcamming conference and that 6GB of ram will let you run everything just fine without any lag, thanks to that large ram.

Only 3.2 pounds. Tats less than a pound more than those really light netbooks out there. Netbooks go for 2.5 pounds, the Portege is at 3.2 pounds, and the Macbook Pro goes for 4.5 pounds. It's very ultraportable and can fit nicely inside your handbag/backpack, it's also very thin as well. This laptop quality is very durable material as well. It's not some cheap plastic material, it's actually well made like a professional. If you didn't know yet, Portege is a business designed laptop.

Lastly, with this entire processor, ram, hard drive space, and being ultraportable, how long will the battery last? It says on the standards it should be 9 hours long! That's amazing! I however have heard about tests and from real life tests you'd probably be getting 7 hours of battery life realistically. But the great part is that Toshiba has the "ecosaver" program equipped that really helps conserve the battery longer and helps you measure how much "watts" you're using.

Overall for the price, this makes a great laptop, and the best part is this just came out quietly this month, October 2011. I plan to update this review as the months go by to see if my girlfriend runs into any problems. But comparing this to my Unibody White Macbook. I think this laptop seems to be much more powerful and faster than mine. It's light weight, powerful with a great processor, up to date on going beyond the standards on RAM and Harddrive space, and long lasting battery life to get you through your day on the go. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Best Deals for Toshiba Portege R835-P81 13.3-Inch LED Laptop - Magnesium Alloy

I'm an IT professional and have used tons of laptops. This Toshiba laptop is very light compared to the macbook pro 13'', and has good battery life. Build quality is also good. However, it has some major drawbacks -its hard drive, BIOS, and customer service.

The stock hard drive is 5200rpm which is on the slow side. Besides, Toshiba put lots of redundant software on top of windows 7. The result is that starting windows and some apps takes a long time. One resolution to fix the slowness is to get a SSD to replace the slow hard drive. Now here comes the 2nd drawback -its BIOS.

The SSD I purchased is very fast and supports Sata III. However, the BIOS only supports Sata II which forces the SSD to work at a much lower speed. Note that the Intel chipset built in the laptop does support Sata III; it's just Toshiba's BIOS disabled the Sata III speed. This issue applies to the whole R835 series and has been discussed a lot online. Many people have complained to Toshiba and requested them to enable Sata III.

To my surprise, Toshiba decided to ignore customers' feedback and requests. Their CSR is simply not answering customers' questions. It's very simply for them to change the BIOS and enable Sata III, but they simply choose not to do it. Very disappointed w/ their customer service attitude.

In summary, the price is simply too high for this handicapped device. Many other laptops at this price fully supports Sata III. Unless they fix the issue, I won't recommend it to anyone who wants to get the speed out of the money they spend (which they deserve for this price).

If your wondering about getting this laptop, well, just go ahead and get it because it's great.(I own the R835-P56x, very similar)

BUT! Here's a few things you need to be aware of.

Pros:

-Super Light

-Great battery life(over 6-7hr on mine)

-Eco Mode actually works, brings power consumption to 9-11watts

-Fast CPU, Windows movie maker takes care of 720p content easily.

-Feels great, keyboard is fine with me.

-Plays Dirt 3 at 720p on med-high settings. Portal 2 on high at 1080p. Using .2559 Driver

-DVD drive in such a small laptop, it doesn't use the battery hardly at all.

Cons:

-Display doesn't WOW

-The hard drive is flippin slow. Buy a $120 120GB ssd from newegg.com. I got the Intel 320 series for 120 after rebate. Windows experience index now 7.7

-RAM, 4 is ok but I got ADATA XPG Gaming Series 8GB from Newegg.com WEI now 7.5

-Speakers are absolute crap but it's a 3LB laptop so I can't complain. The headphone jack puts out amazing quality.

***** BlOATWARE is terrible **** The first thing I did was find my student copy of windows 7 and installed that from scratch. You do NOT want Toshiba's recovery crap installed on an SSD.

-The mouse left and right are noisy but you can just double click in the trackpad. Also put up the sensitivity of the pad in the settings.

-SATA 3 disabled by Toshiba BIOS, 2 is more reliable anyway

That about sums it up. BTW, the bios startup is wicked fast, especially with an SSD. Go ahead and laugh at the macbook pro next to you.

Drivers you will need to download after a fresh install of Win:

-Toshiba Value Added(To make the keyboard functions work)

-Realtec Audio Drivers(I got them from realtec), windows standard drivers work too

-USB 3.0 Driver(From toshiba)

-Intel Raid Storage Technogy(MUST download from toshiba), it doesn't come out of sleep properly if not installed.

I own the Toshiba P25 Portege for the last 18 month's. It has been a very good lightweight Laptop. I concur with the other reviews in their overall opinions. I noted a lower price at ToshibaDirect at $799.00 this week. Ofice Max offers a similar model with 4gig memory for $799.00 presently.

Just noticed Costco now sells similar model with a couple of extras for $799.00 OfficeMax selling the 4gig model for $699.00.

I bought this product from the Lenovo website because of its functionality and battery life. My personal belief is that a laptop must have 7 hours of realistic use in order to be a 'mobile' device. Im a university student and stay on the campus for about 12-14 hours three days a week, with heavy use of my Laptop. This saying, I have been very excited about the 13 hour battery life with the 9cell battery, where the 'slice battery' can up this to around 21 hours.

Here are some of the options I did, and did not take:

Display: default 720p (not upgraded)

Processor: core i5 3210m (upgraded from i3, ivy bridge)

Memory: 4GB DDR3 (not upgraded)

Storage: 320GB 7200 RPM (not upgraded)

Camera: None

Battery: 9 cell (upgraded from the 6 cell)

-also took on the fingerprint reader, not as useful as I thought. Don't upgrade if you can and spend less money. But it's not an annoyance, so if you want to spend on cash, its kinda cool.

-did not take the backlit keyboard

-took the 2x2 intel antenna

Suggestions on the upgrades:

-Don't upgrade to the 500 GB because the speed is only 5400RPM, which will significantly slow it down. Take on the SSD if you can afford it.

Core i5 3210m is enough for most people, it handles everything I throw at it, and I'm not playing games on it. I play some flash games, and it's very functional. I use photoshop to edit some images and it's very speedy. I also do some video editing and the performance is good. I don't see a good reason to upgrade to an i7. Higher processors will take in more battery, make the fan loud from trying to cool down the system.

-Don't get the backlit keyboard if you don't need it. There is an overhead angled light on the screen (included in all models) that is very powerful. It's more than enough to see the keyboard in low light, and it's more useful than just a backlit keyboard because it acts like a flashlight.

-Take your priorities on the display, I'm satisfied with the display but not fully. Definitely upgrade if you can afford it.

-Don't upgrade to the discrete graphics card, I've read from multiple sources that it makes the laptop become very warm and kicks in the fan into overdrive.

Here are my thoughts on the laptop:

Display: Quite honestly, the display is poor but one of the most functional I have ever used. The reason is because the colors are not varied, and it has the worst viewing angles I have seen. The pros are that everything is crisp and clear. The display also heavily helps the battery life. You can up the brightness, but it's not that bright it sunlight. You can smoothly see the screen at full brightness in daylight, but it could be better. One thing that really impressed me was the angles the screen can be pushed back and forth. You can push the screen back so that it can be laid flat on a surface. I didn't think it was the big of a deal, but it helped so much when I was trying to share an idea or a funny video with someone. On that note, the screen is also very rigid and sturdy. I can pick the whole laptop up from the a screen corner while its open without it giving in. The cons are also very manageable, within a couple days I got used to it and it wasn't a problem. There are steel rollcages that make sure the screen is durable

Keyboard: The keyboard flies, I wasn't a fast typer before but now I can smoothly type lightning speed and barely even look at the keyboard. I had another Lenovo laptop with the old keyboard and this new one is very much better .

Aesthetics: This is a major factor (for some reason) when people are buying a new laptop. Let me tell you that yes, this is fugly. It looks old but the design is mainly for functionality. The aesthetics, however, do show a hint of performance and business, so for that reason it will appeal to some people.

Performance: I've owned some very high performance and some very low performance PC's over the years and this laptop is consistent and reliable. It takes everything I throw at it without a hiccup and I've seen no real lags or freezes. If you're using it for school where you might make a video, edit some photos, play some games, I'm sure this won't have problems. This is NOT for hardcore video editors or gaming people. I would suggest alienware for gaming and an Apple computer for video editing. I've tried playing WOW and some maplestory and it runs very, very smoothly when on medium-high settings.

Battery Life: Like I said before, this thing is THE BEST when it comes to battery life. The T-series have the world's BEST battery life, hand down. Many competitors don't come close. One thing to note tis that it also charges extremely quickly. Mine usually goes from aroun 65% to full in about 10 minutes.

Speakers and audio: I can tell you from experiencing horrible speakers and audio on many laptops that the speakers on this thing are BEYOND what I expected. They are very loud and crisp, and the rival many dedicated desktop speakers. The noise can fill a room at around 70% audio. When it comes to plugging in some headphones, the audio maintains the same quality and then some. I'm often decreasing the volume on every video to almost the lowest because of how loud and great the audio on this laptop is. There is the Dolby Advanced Audio on the t430, so I expected a great quality and was met, and then some. This seriously surprised my and was great because I am pretty much an audiophile.

Weight/thickness/portability; The 14 inch is very thin compared to other laptops. It's only about an inch, and It kinda surprised me because the pictures make it seem much thicker. It's not bulky at all, which was what I thought it would be. Overall, it's more mobile than I thought it would be, so that was a pleasant surprise. The 14inch is pretty small, I can't say the same about the 15inch.

Trackpad: The trackpad isn't so great, it sometimes lags. It's not so reliable but smooth. Some laptop have the flat glass like trackpad, but comfort wise, this feels much better. The red button in the middle is a surprise, I didnt think I would ever use it. I'm getting used to it and it's much more accurate, reliable, efficient, and comfortable than the trackpad. The reason it's not so popular is probably because it takes so long to learn.

Connectivity: There are a total of 4 USB compatible ports, 2 of them being USB 3.0 (also compatible with USB 2.0) There is a default SD Card reader, which works. I don't use it, but there is a network card slot. I don't use the optical drive, but it's comforting to know that I can use it in case I need it for upgrading or troubleshooting (or even gaming). I chose the 2x2 intel antenna, and HEAVILY SUGGEST EVERYONE DO THAT SAME. There is no upgrade charge (at least when I ordered) and it has the REAL N speeds. There is also 2 antennas instead of the one, so connectivity is optimal. I've had no real problems with connecting to wifi besides my router being stubborn. Nothing to complain about when it comes to connecting to wifi. Its very consistent and reliable.

Fingerprint reader: work like a charm, but I use it less than I wanted to. It makes starting up alot slower because you have to wait upwards to minute for the fingerprint software to load up before scanning and logging in. I think just making the computer sleep and boot up from restore would fix this. Never had it really fail, but again, not too useful. Avoid this option if you can.

Build Quality: Excellent build quality, this has goen through military qualifications, so If it can survive a warzone, it will be able to survive a university. No complains at all about the build quality, only good things to say about it

Some concerns:

-again, the trackpad isn't the best. but the red button thing makes up for it if you learn to use it.

-sometimes the optical drive opens up after i shut down the computer and throw it in my bag. It's probably because something hit the eject button, but you just learn to be more careful with the eject button.

-I've bad some updating issues, but it fixed itself. It didnt disrupt my work flow, but windows kept on asking me to restart because the update had failed.

-Not really an issue, but the cover strangely attracts fingerprints for some reason. I don't really care since the think is kinda fugly anyways, but it's something to note.

I've own two expensive gaming laptops prior to this, a Lenovo Y series and an Asus G series. They are bulky, hot and not reliable. This however, is light, robust, simple, not hot, relatively small, and reliable. I was a gamer but now I will never go back to buying a gaming laptop, I would rather sacrifice the graphical performance, than getting a big, heavy, hot, barely portable computer.

edit: I should give more credit to this laptop. It is very modular too. I've changed out the CD drive to an extra hard drive bay. I now have an SSD for my boot drive and my original HDD as my storage drive. Perfect combination.

By researching more you can even change out the screen, add an mSATA SSD, mod the appearance. It's just awesome.

Pros: I like what was shipped is what was ordered. They upgraded the RAM and HDD for me as they missed the fingerprint reader.

Cons: I see there is an issue with launching the camera / mic using the function keys., but the cam works when an application starts using it.

I hadn't updated my personal system in over 10 years. I researched all major laptop brands for a month before making this purchase. And although there are many good systems out there this was the best I found for features versus price.

The idea was to have this laptop in lieu of a new desktop so I wanted a 17" + screen. After researching Intel processors the Core i5 ivy bridge (3rd generation) looked like the best performer per dollar. The 8 gigs of RAM (expandable to 16) was a nice extra as many of this type come standard with only 4 gigs. The hard drive is a bit bigger too.

It was a nice touch to get a back lit keyboard included as most others I saw had it as a paid add on.

The Intel 4000 graphics are pretty good so unless you play first person shooters it handles games pleasingly.

I am impressed with the speed and performance of this laptop and would recommend it without hesitation.

the screen is a bit too reflective and viewing angles are somewhat narrow, but much like everything with this laptop, for the price, very good deal. it runs fast enough for my purposes which are browsing and watching high quality videos mostly. a little video editing.

the one i got was refurbished and i could not tell it was refurbished. so good for me on that front.

battery life was about what you would expect. around 4h of video playback is what i tested. i like a bright screen though. i imagine you can squeeze a little more using lower setting for brightness and more power saving settings.

the keyboard is very nice. i loved it was backlit. my first backlit keyboard and i do not know why i did not have this before. yes i do. the price of laptops with backlit keyboards was usually too high. which brings me back to the fact that this is a good laptop for the price.

i liked that there are 4 usb ports and 3 are usb 3.0. i use the usb 2.0 for my wireless mouse and so doesnt require the transfer speeds. the usb 3.0 is definitely faster than 2.0 on this laptop though trying some external drives which use usb 3.0, i felt it was a bit slow compared to what it was on other computers. but still, decent transfer rates.

all in all, i feel this was a good purchase.

Hi. I just got this Thinkpad last week, so I can only give you my first impressions. The case is very sturdy. The LED screen is very good with nice color. The frame around the screen is the strongest I've seen on any laptop. If you break the screen on this laptop you did something very wrong. The screen pivots 180 degrees so it lays down flat. The hinges are very strong and appear to be magnesium or some other alloy. It's a little heavy but the extra weight is well spent and worth every fraction of an ounce for how sturdy it is.

When the screen is closed, you can set it down on it's back spine and it stands up. It stands up on the sides too, but not as stable. I guess having a clunky old fashioned looking case has it's benefits. ( I read others complain about how it looks, so I state this in jest.)

I have the lowest rated Hard Drive in my T530, 320 GB, 5400 speed, but it still gets a 5.4 ranking on the windows experience, and it is very energy efficient and doesn't drag the battery down, and it's virtually silent.(There is a feature inside called a Hard Drive Air Bag that is supposed to protect it somehow. It's a Lenovo feature. I think it might make it harder to change the hard drive, but I don't know that for a fact.) My old Dell only had 320 GB and in 4 years I had only put about 60 GB worth of media on it. So, for me it's good enough, even though it looks inferior on paper.

Download speeds are pretty fast. But I was very worried that Internet Explorer took for ever to resolve a webpage when surfing. I tried Firefox search engine and was shocked at how very fast it was. Then I found a Microsoft utility to remove Internet Add-Ons. You can run it from the Microsoft website. What a wow difference. Now it's a surfing delight.

There is no number pad, but my Dell 14 didn't have one either. There is a little space between each key that alloys me to type without my annoying errors and backspaces from hitting adjacent keys. I'm lovin' it. The keyboard light is a nice useful touch. I very much like the touch pad experience on this machine.

The Keyboard is flanked by the speakers. The Sound is interestingly good, while not overly loud. In Sound Controls there is a Dolby Equalizer where you can set several custom EQ protocols. and turn on Surround or not. While it's not true surround, it does make an interesting stereo effect for the user while at the keyboard. I like the sound of it alot. I haven't had this on my budget machines.

I've just upgraded from an older T21 to T23, because I love Thinkpads. The design is sleek and strict, without unnecessary brightness and buttons. The LCD screen is sharp, and much brighter than those I saw on Compaq. It is very slim and light, so perfect for travel. It is fast. The swappable drives take 30 seconds to change. etc. and etc.

Importantly enough, it is an excellent IBM's customer support. T-series has 3-year warranty. When I had to change a part on my older T21, I sent it on Tuesday and they returned the laptop on Thursday same week (at their cost, of course!). Online support is also superb.

You can look at ebay for good deals, but beware of possible scum! Buy it!

I bought one of these about four years ago from a surplus reseller. Installed XP Pro and Office 03.

All ran great for -well, four years. Admittedly, I abused the hell out of this unit. I more than deserved the failure, and was not surprised when it happened.

Reasons this ThinkPad is great:

-Tough (as mentioned above).

-Designed for WAY more ram than other computers sold at the time of its manufacture.

-Display gives a clear, sharp image.

-File download matrix available at Lenovo.com -all the drivers you'll ever need to restore this to factory functionality.

-Bullet-proof (unless you "attack it with an ax" as I did).

-Slim titanium frame (light, strong, dissipates heat well).

-Parts readily available (It's a ThinkPad!!!)

Finally, it failed about 3 months ago when I dropped it.

Simply putting old (sound) drive into a new enclosure and cloning it to the new unit. Strongly advise buying one if you need a reliable, inexpensive computer and you don't need a lot of processor speed

It has good battery life and is very quiet. Sound production is good. Pretty much all I need for work and is a light carry for bicycling to work. Don't buy it directly from HP. They're nuts.

My old trusty HP running XP finally threw in the towel. Not a gamer or heavy graphics user so all out power is not necessary...just reliable basic web access and computing...and the occasional DVD/Movie.

First off, you can tell this case is used for more than one machine as the HDMI output is blocked off. Custom it is not. While the keyboard layout is pretty good it does have some "give" which gives it a less than solid feel. The touchpad is quite sensitive and I found myself accidentally having the cursor go haywire. I now disable it when using a mouse. I do like the dedicated number pad but find it interesting there is no volume control...only on screen.

4 USB ports is a bonus plus the built in web cam...something not found on many of the bargain units. The battery charges very fast and in heavy/constant use I have been getting 2.5+ hours.

Speed is fair and likely with a bump in the memory it will increase a bit. Fortunately you can upgrade up to 8 gig.

Not much else to say yet...but if all you need is a basic machine for less than $350 this could be your ticket.

I at first thought this was a great value. Lenovo has an excellent reputation and the price was great. After using the machine now for 5 months, I have found I made a mistake in purchasing this laptop and wish I could return it. I am having issues connecting to the internet. Windows 7 is dropping the wireless connection ever 20 30 seconds and reconnecting. This causes pages not found which I have to reload and dropped videos. Since the main purpose of using this machine is to surf the internet (it is not very powerful and was purchased for that purpose), this is disappointing. I have also run into issues with reading some DVDs, though it will read others. Same disks have no issues on any other machine I've tried.

Is the fault of all this Lenovo's or Microsoft's? No idea. And as far as I am concerned it does not matter. Lenovo should have tested this system better and made it sure it worked correctly. The DVD drive should work with the disks used. Is the drive going? Again no idea. I can't tell when it started having this issue since I did not test DVDs until recently, but again, poor quality.

I have not given up on getting the system to work and will most likely try another operating system, but it has hurt my opinion about the quality of Lenovos.

I suggest you look for something else.

After playing around with different options, I have found gotten the wireless not to disconnect (though I don't know if it is a permenant fix). I also found the issue with the unreadable DVDs (long folder name in a subfolder though Windows XP had no problems). So is the issue Windows 7 is more finicky and I should not be blaming Lenovo? I tend to group the computer and OS together unless I planned on using another OS. In any case, with the problems (at least for now fixed), I feel comfortable updating the rating from 2 stars to 3 stars. Why not 4 or more? Because:

A brand new system really should not be giving me issues that every other device connected to my wireless do not. A brand new system should not give me issues with DVDs that an older OS has no problems with. Finally, I did try to run Linux from a bootable CD and it did not run well (so this computer is not non-Windows friendly). For all that, I'll do 3 stars.

I found only two very bad points

One is the option to recognize your fingerprint. It works very bad. You have to move your finger a lot of times over the sensor before it recognize it.

The second and worst point is the option to recognize by camera. Forget it. If you use this option the windows never booted correctly and I needed a lot of attempts to start the system. Then I deleted the driver and since this time I didn't have anymore problems with this Laptop. Overall it is not bad. My friend said if you buy a computer for $ 4000, you get it. If you buy it for $ 350 you get it too. It's a device for people like I not for professionals

Had this computer for a week now, paid $449.99, and have been very happy with it and will list some impressions.

--I3 Processor combined with 4GB of ram results in laptop that is very fast for this price range. Passmark benchmarks show the I3 to be almost half again as fast as the best CPU's from Intel and AMD found in comparably priced laptops.

--Comfortable keyboard w/numeric keypad.

--Numeric keypad makes the computer a little wider than my HP without a keypad. Still fits in my zip up laptop case though.

--Screen is also a little wider, but it does not distort anything displayed.

--Graphics are good. Fine for viewing DVD movies and editing photos. Maybe not so great if you play a lot of demanding games. If so, proceed with caution. Test it or get an opinion from someone who has played the games you are interested in on the computer.

--No HDMI port. I won't miss it. Probably a statement by Toshiba that this is not a game machine.

--Can't comment on the built in camera or the face recognition--haven't tried them yet.

--Card reader only accepts Memory Sticks, MultiMedia Cards or SD cards (standard size only, you need an adapter for the smaller ones). Does not take XD cards which sucks for me because that is what my Olympus camera uses. As long as I don't lose the USB cable that came with it I can still connect through a USB port.

--Onboard speakers are very tinny sounding. Sound can be improved some if your software has an equalizer but only to the point of being just acceptable. Music sounds pretty good through headphones and can be tailored nicely if you have an equalizer. Volume of on board speakers is reasonable but since the speakers point directly at the ceiling, it helps to tilt the screen to about a 45 degree angle so the sound bounces off of it. Can't use the computer for anything else while the screen is tilted.

--Wireless download speed is very good, much better than my desktop, even though it is connecting through a G router.

--Amount of bloatware doesn't seem excessive.

--Getting use to Windows 7 64 bit. Very fast boot speed. Have been able to load most of my software without a problem. Windows 7/64 is ok with the 32 bit software but balks at the older 16 bit. One of my all time favorite programs was Micrografx Picture Publisher but it is one of the 16 bit programs--oh well.

--Top of the computer and most of the inside surfaces are a high gloss finish over a textured surface. Not really wild about it. Shows finger prints and smudges easily. Will show scratches readily if and when they occur. Would have done much better if they had just gone with the textured surface.

--Lid has no latch and I would like it better if it did.

--Battery life seems to be very good. I would estimate 3-4 hours. Haven't used it continuously for that long so it is just an estimate. When it powers down after not being used for a period of time the drain on the battery is very, very low.

--Overall, I don't think you will find a better machine for the price. The processor is very robust and the feature set is good. I wish it had a dedicated video processor, but since my game playing is limited to the likes of solitaire, I don't think it will cause me any problems.

I bough this Laptop in November of 2010. At that time similar laptops with exact same hardware were selling for 600+. I bought this laptop during a 3-day Best Buy sale for 449 +tax. Excellent value for the money.

Here are some pros and cons.

PROS:

+ Great value for the price! Much less than comparable laptops with same hardware.

+ Comes with one of the fastest budget laptop processors, the Intel Core i3 370M clocked at 2.4 Ghz.

+ 4GB of memory (64 bit Operating Systems are able to take advantage of the 4GB memory, while 32-bit systems can only use up to 3GB).

+ Under normal use, you can expect, on average, about 4 hours of battery life.

+ Great mouse and keyboard, very conveniently placed and the mouse pad has a lock feature.

+ Doesn't come with too much bloat-ware.

+ At 5.48 lbs, it is very light for its size.

+ Nice and sleek design, though feels a bit plasticky. No biggie though.

+ Has the numpad, something that HP laptops of similar size (15.6") tend to lack.

+ 320 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive is spacious and reasonably fast.

+ Compared to similar laptops with AMD processors, this laptop runs significantly cooler (temperature wise)! This was the major reason why I did not choose to consider AMD equipped laptops. Over time AMD equipped laptops tend to run so hot that it becomes unbearable to keep it on your lap. This Intel equipped laptop runs cool and quiet. The fan turns on to high only if you do some heavy work on the computer and keep it on a surface that doesn't dissipate heat as well (i.e. your bed). Normally, very quiet, very cool. Thank you Intel!

As great as this laptop is, it does have several, but minor cons:

CONS:

As mentioned before, feels a bit plasticky compared to other laptops in the price range. The plastic is also of the type that leaves fingerprints. However, much less fingerprints show if compared to my HP Pavillion dv-1400.

The webcam quality is sub-standard, but you can still skype with people without a problem. Just doesn't seem to pick up colors as vividly as other laptop webcams (i.e. HP).

The built in speakers are pretty bad. The sound quality that comes out of them is sub-standard as well, in my opinion. My iphone 3Gs has better speaker sound. When set to max volume, the noise makes the entire computer vibrate slightly so keeping your hands on it while playing a loud song or video becomes a bit irritating. However, the problem can be easily sold with some headphones. =)

The LED screen is nice and large, but I can identify individual pixels sitting a typical distance away. It's not that big of a problem, but I thought Toshiba could have built this laptop with a much better screen.

Does not have an HDMI output but with the build in wireless internet card and Intel MyWiFi technology, you can get an adapter to connect to your TV which allows you to connect your laptop to the TV without any cables.

Has the Intel HN55 chipset, which means that it has an integrated graphics car. It is ok for every day use and, but not if you plan to do any major, graphics-intensive gaming.

So to sum it up, I love the laptop. I got it for my girlfriend and it will be kinda hard to gift it to her on Christmas, because I like the laptop so much. It is fast, and very capable. Despite several minor drawbacks, I think this is a great value for the money. Now, if I had to pay $630 instead of the $449 dollars for it, I would definitely go with something else, possibly even a laptop with Core i5 at $630+ price.

I use this laptop for work and for light gaming. I play World of Warcraft. If anyone out there is wondering if this integrated card will run WoW, well let me tell you, IT DOES! It will run on low and fair settings. I have not tried it in a raid such as ICC. I have ran a few 5 man dungeons and it worked just fine. It ran through Dal extremely smoothly. This was pre-cata, but just a couple of weeks before with all of the pre-cata updates so I assume it will do fine post-cata as well. I'm including this info because in researching new laptops, I became very frustrated with the LACK of info about the graphics cards for these newer laptops. You can look up info on some integrated cards (AMD cards are easier it seems), but others are hard to dig up info on. If you are wanting to play games on this laptop that are very demanding in the graphics department, then this laptop may not be for you. Research the card and the games you wish to play as much as you can before making your purchase.

Other than gaming, I am running office on this machine and using it for internet browsing. I also hook it up to a projector from time to time. Programs and web sites load quickly and run smoothly. I paid $450 for it a couple of weeks ago and I am very pleased with my purchase. I am not seeing the intel version available at my retail location anymore, but it's available here on amazon now. There is an AMD version available if that's more your style for the same price I paid. Shop around. If you need a bigger hard drive, you can pay a bit more for that model as well.

Computer experience: Intermediate/Advanced

I bought this laptop about 3 months ago for $449+tax at Best Buy, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Its design is nothing short of immaculate, the L655-S5117 is an extremely aesthetically pleasing little piece of technology (as long as you don't mind wiping fingerprints off from time to time). As far as performance goes, I use mine mostly for watching videos, word processing, and a little casual gaming. Though many reviews comment on the L655's lack of 3D capability, it is capable of some playing some relatively advanced 3D games without a hitch, older MMORPG's (EQ, WoW) run just fine on it.

The Intel Mobile HD graphics system is excellent for watching streaming videos on your favorite TV (you have to buy a separate receiver), however it is not designed for playing games--there is about a 2 second lag between the laptop and the television. This lag is unnoticeable when watching video.

The display on the L655 is vivid and responsive, though as another reviewer remarked, it is possible to notice individual pixels at a relatively close distance. At 15.6" the display size is pretty big.

And who can go wrong with a full-sized keyboard with a number pad?

This computer may not be for you if you are a serious gamer, but the casual gamer need not be too discouraged. It has a very efficient cooling system, and according to the Toshiba PC Health Monitor that came installed on it, the CPU never goes above about 55% it's maximum safe temperature even with 3D games running.

For the price, I couldn't be happier. It's a beautiful little machine and it does its job well for a budget laptop. Every time I look at it I feel all warm and fuzzy (guess I'm a little materialistic!).

From the minute you open the box, you have the feeling that this is no ordinary laptop and you are right. Each component is packaged in its own little unit within with care. Inside you will find the Acer S7, AC power adapter, a wireless mouse, 2 special adapters for VGA and for HDMI, and a case for your S7. Acer even includes an anti-static cloth. Sweet. Turn on and set-up is straightforward though I won't say I am a fan of the Windows 8 operating system.

The S7 is everything an ultrabook should be. It has a very nice intuitive design and layout. The power button is located outside the unit in the middle on the left hand side. Also on the same side is the port for the VGA/HDMI adapter and the headphones. Outside on the right side are located two 3.0 USB ports and a 2-in-1 card reader. The S7 has a 1.3 MP webcam that delivers high resolution images that won't disappoint. The 13.3-inch HD touch screen display is uniformly bright. The active matrix TFT color display delivers very crisp true images no fading even to the edges of the screen and boasts a resolution of 1920x 1080. The touchscreen is very responsive. This ultrabook has all the perks including IEEE 802.11 wifi and 4.0 bluetooth.

The keyboard is backlit which is a nice touch. The keyboard has a Windows start key and a menu key. Overall the keyboard is well laid out. It has a nice feel to it but there's very little travel when typing which may lead to repeat character errors when typing.

Physically the unit has a solid feel to it and it should since the unit's body is lightweight aluminum. The top of the unit is covered in Gorilla glass. When the unit is on the "Acer" logo glows white on the face. Closed the unit is quite literally razor-thin less than 0.5-in and will give the MacBook Air a run for the money. The unit travels well. It has excellent battery life long enough for an east-to-west coast flight (ca. 5-h). In my book, the Acer S7 comes out on top without a doubt!

In terms of the processor, the S7 has a 3rd generation dual core i7 chipset clocked at 1.9 GHz which can be boosted to speeds of 3.0 GHz. The unit comes with 4G SDRAM. I use large dataset applications such as NVIVO and SPSS and have been quite impressed with the speed. Unlike many other computers this unit doesn't heat up noticeably even when you use it all day. It does have a fan that is relatively quiet and turns on when needed to help dissipate heat.

Disadvantages include the fact you are limited to 4G RRAM the RAM is soldered into the motherboard so you can't add RAM. I want to note that this is common problem with ultrabooks. To hook up to a projector or digital screen you must use one of the two adapters provided with the unit. Don't lose these as the adapter is a proprietary product. The audio is supposedly Dolby Home Theatre 4.0 but don't get excited the sound is nothing to write home about = so-so very tinny and thin. As I stated earlier, the keyboard is a tad too responsive which leads to repeat character errors which can be annoying if you are a speed typist.

Bottom-line if you are a working technical professional looking for a laptop and don't want to compromise performance and capabilities for travelability then look no further the Acer S7 is well worth it's sticker price of $1649.00

Recommendations: I highly recommend purchasing a second AC power adapter and an Acer onsite service plan.

As the owner of an Ipad and a 17 inch laptop, I must say that the Acer Aspire S7 is the perfect mix between the two.

Here are some of the concerns you might see online addressed:

1) The keyboard was reviewed to be slightly uncomfortable. I find it quite pleasant and easier to type on than my other (Vaio) laptop.

2) The battery life is wonderful as it goes up to 6.5 hours on battery saver, and a bit above 5 hours on balanced.

This is a beautiful device that is bound to get plenty of attention from all your friends, especially since it is super thin and touch-screen enabled.

I'll edit my review if anything goes wrong, but so far it is going perfectly.

I received this laptop as an anniversary gift. We had originally focused on a heavy duty but lightweight Windows 8 laptop/tablet. No Windows RT for me. Maybe I wanted too much out of one device. I was hoping for the perfect blend of ultrabook and tablet.

Prior to that we had tried the Zen Book Prime, but the keyboard and touchpad were just too buggy. We considered the Samsung Series 9 as well. Against all of my programmer boyfriend's belief's we tried a juiced up Mac Air 13 but ultimately decided against the Apple OS.

We didn't want to wait any longer for the Yoga or HP Envy 2 convertibles. I decided I needed an ultra portable laptop over a tablet. I wanted to be able to do some work on it as well and not use it primarily for entertainment.

My boyfriend surprised me with this beautiful laptop. Beautiful, feels solid, and has all the goodies, at this price, it better.

First, it's gorgeous. Beautiful display, feels solid, the keypad looks like the Macbook Air but less comfortable. Feels good but a little awkward,and the delete key is located to the right of the space bar.

This was my first experience with Windows 8, and let me say you really need a touch screen to utilize it. I strongly recommend that you DON'T update to Windows 8 UNLESS you have a touchscreen.

Back to this gem, I've now had it two weeks and still beautiful but instead of being more at ease with the keyboard, it's actually getting more cumbersome as I'm very aware of as I'm typing this review. It's great for basic apps and web browsing but if I just wanted that I could have gotten a tablet or Chromebook for a fraction of the price.

The fan is so loud that my visiting mother thought it was the radiators. I'm very aware of the fan as I'm typing this. Sometimes the fan is SO loud lately that it seems like it's going to self-destruct.

Three stars because of the layout of the keyboard, the fan, and for this price why not make this gorgeous machine fully convert to a tablet?? It's already a touch screen so most of the job is done.

When you spend $1,700 on a laptop, you just don't want to compromise or settle. There's so much to love about the S7....gorgeous styling, light, and stunning screen. It became the envy of everyone in my office. So what's the unpardonable sin for me?

Noise. The fan noise was random and extraordinarily loud. So much so that I couldn't take a conference call on a speaker. Also anyone sitting in my office when the fan kicked in remarked about the jet engine taking off. I tried to ignore it, or tell myself that I would get used to it, but I just couldn't and it ended up going back.

Another annoying factor for me is that the trackpad is not centered. I know it's a common placement, but it still really bothered me. The left side of the palm rest is significantly smaller than the right side of the palm rest. I have large hands and I ended up having to change how I type, having to really tuck my left thumb under my fingers and it just wasn't comfortable for all day computing.

The other factors that I would have overlooked if it wasn't for the above 2 deal breakers:

Key travel is shallow on this keyboard. Coming from 15 years of using ThinkPads, the difference was significant, but it would not have been the deal breaker for me.

The other thing I wasn't crazy about was that the edging on the bottom half of the laptop was sharper that it should have been. Again, when you're looking for all day comfort, this is one of the little things that work against you. Another non-deal breaker for me, but just a point of feedback.

I would have loved better battery life as well.

Other than these few items, I absolutely loved the S7 Ultrabook. I'm going to give either the Asus UX31A Touch or the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch a shot next.
