The MSI X340 is an extremely slim (0.7" thin) and light (just under 3-lb) laptop that rivals the MacBook Air, but without the high price tag and it also runs Windows! Vista Home Premium 64-bit to be exact. I have an Lenovo U110, which is an amazing laptop all on its, but I found myself wanting a bigger screen, and the x340 is the perfect answer, its 13.4" LED-backlit LCD screen is bright and show good vivid color contrast. The keyboard is not as responsive as the Lenovo (which generally regarded as having the best keyboard in the industy), but nevertheless, it is a very respectable keyboard that show little flex during typing. The HDMI 1080p works perfectly on my Samsung LCD, which I used quite often not just to watch video, but also to simply use it as a large computer monitor along with my cordless Logitech keyboard and mouse. The HDMI also passes audio to my Samsung LCD TV speaker, not sure if it pass 5.1 digital surround signal since I don't have an HDMI AV receiver. This is just about the most perfect ultra-portable laptop, with its price, weight, large 13.4" screen. The only thing I can think of that would make this laptop perfect is an additional USB port (currently only 2) and the additional of a second/right mouse button, and perhaps a slightly more powerful battery. The standard 4-cell last a little over 3 hours of mixed use with Wifi on at all time with FTP upload, web browsing, document creation and screen brightness set at about 75%. I know some of you might also want to add DVD/blu-ray drive to the mix, but the resulting increase in price, size and weight will not justify the benefit. This is a wonderful laptop for those of us who want a small and light ultraportable with a large screen, but didn't want to spend more than $1000 for a new laptop.

After trying and returning an HP Mini 1000 from Verizon I ordered an X340 from Amazon and have no regrets. While I think the new 11.6" form factor machines (e.g. Acer 751h) will be ideal for train use, I wanted the perfect ultra-portable for home which had a little more horsepower and a bigger screen. As others have said, while this machine costs double what a 10" netbook does, it is a fraction of the price of a Macbook Air or Sony Vaio with pretty equivalent specs.

The packaging and design of the X340 are beautiful, and contrary to some other reviewers, I do not find it to be too plasticy or the keyboard to have too much flex. I think Timothy Lam's review is spot on so I won't duplicate. The machine runs Vista 32 respectably right out of the box, but I immediately upgraded to Windows 7 32-bit without a hitch or DVD drive using a shareware program called Virtual Clone Drive. Projected battery life increased by about 20 minutes to 4:07, but I have not had it long enough to cite what you can realistically expect. If that is unacceptable there is supposed to be an optional 8 cell battery, or you should consider the X320 with Atom Z530 and 8 hour battery life for $600 (same size and great screen).

I think the screen size is ideal for an ultra-portable, and despite the screen being glossy, I noticed very little glare, especially compared to the HP 1000. Although the touchpad lacks 2 discreet buttons, I found it to be excellent, as are the speakers for a notebook. The light weight and ergonomics were perfect for chilling on the couch, and working or surfing. It really is a delight to use, and kind of intoxicating.

In summary, depending on your needs, there is virtually nothing to dislike about this computer and I think MSI has scored a big hit in this 13.4" ultra-portable category.

Pros:

* Beautiful design

Other than the keyboard, I absolutely love this machine. The LED screen is bright and crisp just as my MacBook Pro. I was just about to buy MBA before I read about this laptop.

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and with minor tweaks (mostly to xorg.conf for the weird screen resolution), got everything working correctly. I need to use Unix as I'm a software engineer and the performance of this does not disappoint. It is now the portable machine for the RubyHead.

Review of Toshiba Portege R835-P81 13.3-Inch LED Laptop - Magnesium Alloy

Toshiba Portege R835-P81 13.3-Inch LED Laptop - Magnesium Alloy Casing in Blue

I was looking for the previous model Toshiba Portege R835 P70 for some time. After reading all reviews on portable lightweight laptops, I was sold on it. i5 2410 processor, 4GB RAM, and ~3lb weight were great specs. I recently noticed it had been discontinued and there was no apparent replacement on Toshiba's website. That was until Toshiba magically quietly added this new, updated model to their website last week. The Portege R835 P81 takes an already stout laptop and makes it that much better! Now it has an i5 2435 processor rated higher and 2 more GB of RAM (to a total of 6GB). While it only has a 640GB HDD at 5400rpm, it starts up quick and gets going. I love that it's so light weight and makes my life a ton easier in my day to day operations running my business. I needed portability since I spend the better part of my day meeting clients at homes and businesses, and this laptop does the job. I looked into Macbook Airs, Samsung 9 series etc., but nothing beats this computer for the "bang-for-your-buck" factor. I recommend this laptop for anyone that wants a smaller form factor that will last you a long time.

Update: 1/13/11

This will be the last update. My girlfriend and I broke up and she returned the laptop to me because she doesn't feel comfortable having it anymore. I've sold it on Auction on Ebay for $680.00. This is still a great laptop and I'm truly disappointed I will not get to see it again. I'm thankful for all the positives feedback I've been receiving about this review and I'm very happy to help out. As you can see, the reviews are growing slowly for this laptop so you should feel very confident you won't be disappointed in this laptop.

As for my girlfriend and I, we're not talking anymore and she's gone ahead and purchased her own new laptop, a Sony.

Update: 11/21/11

There was a few problems regarding wifi on this Toshiba where it wouldn't connect to networks that require a password within the browser (workplace or school network where it required your id number/username). We tried using an external wifi adapter via USB and it turned out it still wouldn't connect. I called Amazon and verified with them there seem to be something wrong with the Wifi, it would connect successfully at home or on a mobile hotspot but not at work/school. Amazon was very prompt and got a supervisor approval to send a new replacement laptop with free one day shipping. We tried it out just today at both work and school and now it works just superbly!

I'd like to give FIVE STARS to AMAZON for their great customer support, I've been buying from them constantly since 2006 and they've been nothing but fantastic towards treating me like their VIP customer.

Besides that, we now have a like new laptop again, and I'm not really concern about moving data back and forth to the hard drive because of my expertise in computers. I've been reading other reviews, yes this laptop is quite delicate but this laptop is so light of course it's going to be fragile! The keyboard seems just fine, it's not an exactly nice finish like a macbook but it's still just a decent keyboard. The webcam has not provide much issue, I webcam with my girlfriend almost every other night and I can hear her clearly and see her clearly just fine. She would even point the webcam at our fish pet and I could see the fish even in low lighting!

Currently my girlfriend is a moderate business worker and full time student and this laptop has been nothing but quick, fast, and lightweight for her. Even I'm enjoying playing with it now and then over my White Unibody Macbook.

Update: 11/8/11

Its been over two weeks. The laptop is still running strong and there hasn't been any problems at all. My girlfriend mentioned during her class someone complimented on her laptop stating that it's so lightweight and you don't see many lightweight laptops with an i5 processor. We purchased this case (attached item name below) and it fits perfectly and very easy to put in and out. There has been no issues with the battery life, it's still very long exactly as stated. The wireless connection has been superb. There has been some Toshiba software that may be bloatware, but half of it is actually useful compared to other laptops. Toshiba really focused on making programs that is truly essential for the user.

Case Logic QNS-113 13.3-Inch EVA Molded Laptop Macbook Air/Pro Sleeve (Black)

Update: 10/31/11

It's been over a week. This laptop has been nothing but fantastic for my girlfriend. No problems whatsoever. Very quick and fast at both starting up and turning off. There was some skeptical questions regarding the battery life. At 90% it said there was 4 hours of battery left, but once it went down to 70% it said there was 6 hours of battery left. Regardless overall depending on the usage, just surfing the internet and doing light word processing it goes beyond seven hours which is plenty of time away from a power outlet.

I'm a very tech savvy person and have worked with all kinds of laptops from Toshiba, Acer, Asus, HP, Compaq, and Apple. I have to say I'm amazed of how great this Portege is, it's definitely lighter than many of their rivals, and it carries an i5 Sandy Bridge processor, and it's equipped with a large amount of ram and hard drive space.

From Squaretrade Warranty, Toshiba was rank #2 in reliability in laptops with the least malfunctions after three years, with Asus landing at #1. The reason why I prefer Toshiba is because they only make Netbooks/Laptops in the computing world. All the other brands they make laptops/desktops/all in one pcs. Toshiba however, only focuses on portable computing.

I've worked with the previous Portege, the R700 /w the i3 processor. The one thing that blew me away was that it's a 3 pound 13.3 inch laptop. The Macbook Air at the time was lighter but it didn't have an i3 processor. This new updated model though was a great find for me. I was looking around for a new laptop for my girlfriend. She asked for a bigger monitor than her netbook, much faster, and something that would last for a long time.

The screen seems pretty reflective in high lighted setting, say outdoor in the sun, this may boast as an issue for some. However, 90% of the usage on a laptop for many users out there is indoor. When using this indoor I see no problem whatsoever. It plays very smoothly HD quality videos with no lag. The brightness is very bright as well, I see myself turning the brightness down mostly and could still see just fine. It's bright enough on medium setting and it's LED.

The i5 2.4 ghz processor is one of the latest ones for laptop thats just about right for your everyday multitasking job. It also has a turbo boost technology that could crank it up to speed to 3.0 ghz if it needs to under big work overload. This is useful for those gamers out there or those who want to do photoshop.

It has 640gb HD. Usually laptops have 250GB or 320GB but this has 640GB!!! That is twice as big as the average laptop HD size! You will not have to worry for a long time regarding laptop space on this laptop. Trust me, if you're not going to be downloading many movies or plan to put 1,000,000 pictures on this thing, you're going to be really happy wit this large amount of space.

6GB of ram, this is what lets you run multiple applications and windows at the same time. 4GB ram seems to be the average of most laptops, so again it goes beyond the standards once again. You can run ten internet windows, watch a movie, and run a webcamming conference and that 6GB of ram will let you run everything just fine without any lag, thanks to that large ram.

Only 3.2 pounds. Tats less than a pound more than those really light netbooks out there. Netbooks go for 2.5 pounds, the Portege is at 3.2 pounds, and the Macbook Pro goes for 4.5 pounds. It's very ultraportable and can fit nicely inside your handbag/backpack, it's also very thin as well. This laptop quality is very durable material as well. It's not some cheap plastic material, it's actually well made like a professional. If you didn't know yet, Portege is a business designed laptop.

Lastly, with this entire processor, ram, hard drive space, and being ultraportable, how long will the battery last? It says on the standards it should be 9 hours long! That's amazing! I however have heard about tests and from real life tests you'd probably be getting 7 hours of battery life realistically. But the great part is that Toshiba has the "ecosaver" program equipped that really helps conserve the battery longer and helps you measure how much "watts" you're using.

Overall for the price, this makes a great laptop, and the best part is this just came out quietly this month, October 2011. I plan to update this review as the months go by to see if my girlfriend runs into any problems. But comparing this to my Unibody White Macbook. I think this laptop seems to be much more powerful and faster than mine. It's light weight, powerful with a great processor, up to date on going beyond the standards on RAM and Harddrive space, and long lasting battery life to get you through your day on the go. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

I'm an IT professional and have used tons of laptops. This Toshiba laptop is very light compared to the macbook pro 13'', and has good battery life. Build quality is also good. However, it has some major drawbacks -its hard drive, BIOS, and customer service.

The stock hard drive is 5200rpm which is on the slow side. Besides, Toshiba put lots of redundant software on top of windows 7. The result is that starting windows and some apps takes a long time. One resolution to fix the slowness is to get a SSD to replace the slow hard drive. Now here comes the 2nd drawback -its BIOS.

The SSD I purchased is very fast and supports Sata III. However, the BIOS only supports Sata II which forces the SSD to work at a much lower speed. Note that the Intel chipset built in the laptop does support Sata III; it's just Toshiba's BIOS disabled the Sata III speed. This issue applies to the whole R835 series and has been discussed a lot online. Many people have complained to Toshiba and requested them to enable Sata III.

To my surprise, Toshiba decided to ignore customers' feedback and requests. Their CSR is simply not answering customers' questions. It's very simply for them to change the BIOS and enable Sata III, but they simply choose not to do it. Very disappointed w/ their customer service attitude.

In summary, the price is simply too high for this handicapped device. Many other laptops at this price fully supports Sata III. Unless they fix the issue, I won't recommend it to anyone who wants to get the speed out of the money they spend (which they deserve for this price).

Hi,

If your wondering about getting this laptop, well, just go ahead and get it because it's great.(I own the R835-P56x, very similar)

BUT! Here's a few things you need to be aware of.

Pros:

-Super Light

-Great battery life(over 6-7hr on mine)

-Eco Mode actually works, brings power consumption to 9-11watts

-Fast CPU, Windows movie maker takes care of 720p content easily.

-Feels great, keyboard is fine with me.

-Plays Dirt 3 at 720p on med-high settings. Portal 2 on high at 1080p. Using .2559 Driver

-DVD drive in such a small laptop, it doesn't use the battery hardly at all.

Cons:

-Display doesn't WOW

-The hard drive is flippin slow. Buy a $120 120GB ssd from newegg.com. I got the Intel 320 series for 120 after rebate. Windows experience index now 7.7

-RAM, 4 is ok but I got ADATA XPG Gaming Series 8GB from Newegg.com WEI now 7.5

-Speakers are absolute crap but it's a 3LB laptop so I can't complain. The headphone jack puts out amazing quality.

***** BlOATWARE is terrible **** The first thing I did was find my student copy of windows 7 and installed that from scratch. You do NOT want Toshiba's recovery crap installed on an SSD.

-The mouse left and right are noisy but you can just double click in the trackpad. Also put up the sensitivity of the pad in the settings.

-SATA 3 disabled by Toshiba BIOS, 2 is more reliable anyway

That about sums it up. BTW, the bios startup is wicked fast, especially with an SSD. Go ahead and laugh at the macbook pro next to you.

Drivers you will need to download after a fresh install of Win:

-Toshiba Value Added(To make the keyboard functions work)

-Realtec Audio Drivers(I got them from realtec), windows standard drivers work too

-USB 3.0 Driver(From toshiba)

-Intel Raid Storage Technogy(MUST download from toshiba), it doesn't come out of sleep properly if not installed.

I own the Toshiba P25 Portege for the last 18 month's. It has been a very good lightweight Laptop. I concur with the other reviews in their overall opinions. I noted a lower price at ToshibaDirect at $799.00 this week. Ofice Max offers a similar model with 4gig memory for $799.00 presently.

Just noticed Costco now sells similar model with a couple of extras for $799.00 OfficeMax selling the 4gig model for $699.00.

Really tried to love this laptop...and I honestly did for the first hour. It was beautiful, light, and sleek. Then, an hour in, I decided to start using the browser to search for something and lo and behold, allmywordstypedoutasthus...basically, I found out that if I wanted a space between my words, I had to press right into the middle of the spacebar. I had to press 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch from either end in before the spacebar finally registered and a space appears. I'm a pretty fast typer...on slow days, I probably type around 75wpm, other times it'd be around 100wpm. By simply having this malfunctioning spacebar, however, my typing speed goes down to around 40wpm...which is really quite annoying because I basically can't type as freely or comfortably as I'd like. If you're already a slow typer, or don't think you'll use the spacebar much for chatting/writing essays/etc. then you should probably be fine. I really loved this laptop before finding out this. But unfortunately, a spacebar that doesn't register when you press slightly off from the middle does not mesh well with me...or back to the store it'll go...what a pity. Also, from what I've seen online, it's not that I got a lemon or whatever...apparently all laptops from asus has this problem...so be careful if you want to order from Asus...

Another thing that sort of annoyed me, but wasn't really a huge deal, is that the plug is connected to the adapter box thingy...which is odd because when you plug in your laptop, if your outlet has any other available ones, your laptop plug may end up having to cover it. Also, the charger wire is relatively short. Overall, the keyboard is also pretty thin and you could sort of see the keyboard surface shake each time you type...didn't matter a huge deal for me though.

The laptop does run pretty quietly...or at least it did for the 3-5 hours I played on it before I decided that I just can't 'suck it up' for 3 years using a bad spacebar.

I bought this laptop from Best Buy, the 320GB version for $249 and let me tell you, that is a steal! I don't have any of the space bar problems that other reviewers were complaining about. Here are the pros and the cons:

Pros:

-Price is fantastic

-Screen is very bright and it makes everything look really good

-Great laptop for browsing the web and basic document editing

-Keyboard is extremely spacious and helps me with my accuracy

-Roomy display at 15.6 inches

-I currently own 5 laptops and this is the only one I can put on my lap for hours at a time because it never runs hot. That's because it has a low power processor and Asus has a good cooling system.

Cons:

-Web cam is low quality because of low megapixels but I rarely use it

-I don't think the RAM memory is expandable but I'm still researching this

I would buy this computer again.

I had to buy a windows machine for business school and since I recently spent an enormous amount of money on an Apple iMac, i decided to go budget for a laptop. I saw this machine at best buy, it was light, fit in my bag, and appeared to do the trick so I bought it. Everything was going great until I got home and unwrapped it and found that the space bar doesn't work fresh out of the box. I then went online and did some research and it seems to be a common problem. Disappointing but not the end of the world. I'm going to return it and probably get a toshiba for a few extra bucks.

Honest reviews on ASUS X502CA-RB01 15.6" Notebook PC

I have owned this laptop for three weeks. I repeat THREE weeks. In the middle of working from home, the thing up and shut itself off. I thought maybe it overheated, so I felt around the laptopit was cool. I turned it back on and it worked for about an hour more, but would not take a charge. I called Asus support. They almost had me do a complete recovery because it wouldn't charge. In the middle of the refresh that they then asked me to complete, it shut off and won't turn back on. They think it's the charger, so they recommended that I pay to mail them the charger and then wait over a week to get a new one back because they wanted to "service" it. Otherwise, they recommended that I purchase a $40 charger from them. So far, I have lost a day's worth of work, but if I can't get it back on, it'll be closer to a week's worth. I would NOT recommend, and Asus support is very poor.

I have to first say that I have had this less than one week. The first impressions have been love at first sight: the look, the feel, the weight, the speed... Amazing, really! The SSD is great and makes the laptop wake up lightning fast.

Now for the cons... Today the display driver acted up twice while watching videos. I find this is unacceptable for a machine of this pedigree. It also seems to get very hot at times, and mind you I live in an environment where the room temperature is in the 60-70F temp range wonder how it works in a hotter environment?!

I will update this review once I have more input...

Usually I go with Asus for PC laptops. I'm replacing my MacBook Pro (I just don't need a Mac) and had two major requirements... an i7 Intel processor and 8G of RAM minimum. This system matched those easily.

There is a similar version of this laptop that has a Blue Ray burner instead of the DVD-RW, a much better graphics card (with 2G onboard RAM...), and an SSD boot drive with a 5400RPM regular drive (instead of just the 5400 regular drive). It was a little over $900. None of these were things I absolutely needed so I opted for the savings.

I have one qualm which docked it a star. The colors on the monitor are a bit muted. Its brightness, clarity, and so forth are all great, but the contrasts aren't as good. Then again, I am almost always hooked up to a dual monitor (which I haven't tested yet) instead of using the laptop monitor so I don't care quite as much, and movies still look fine, but don't expect the screen to be something fabulous.

The one thing that almost kept me from buying the system was its form factor. I was afraid from the pictures that it was going to be bulky and ugly. I have been pleasantly surprised, it is sleek. The weight is very well balanced, the keyboard is very comfy (and full size), the touch pad is well placed (I'm not having any palm problems).

In so far as speed, absolutely no problems there at all.

I really like this system, and am looking forward to a good long run with it.

The other reviewer was upset that the specifications "did not match" the computer. As for speed, the processor runs "normally" at 2.4 GHz with turbo boost of speeds up to 3.4 GHz. I agree that the speed may be misleading, but it's important to note that with mobile processors, the speed difference is employed to help prolong battery life and only deliver the 3.4 GHz performance when absolutely needed.

As for the hard drive only being reported as 688 GB when it is supposed to be 750 GB, there are 2 things probably affecting thisFirst, there is probably a hidden recovery partition and Windows won't report that as part of the drive. Second, Windows reports drives using powers of 1024 whereas drive manufacturers us powers of 1000 to report drive size. As an example, my computer has a 750 GB drive, but Windows only reports it as 654 GB. The recovery partition is using 29 GB and the remainder is accounted for by the "math error" that is manifested by the 2 different methods of calculating drive size. If you do a search for why the difference in reported hard drive sizes, you will find many articles that will explain this more clearly.

This is my first Toshiba computer, and I love it. Fast attractive and fairly priced. I also love Windows 8, it is well designed and practical. The keyboard and mouse are very nice and the picture is beautiful. A great purchase at a very reasonable price. The brushed aluminum finish resists finger prints and cleans up like new.

Overall, it's a wonderful computer. The keyboard is very nice, the screen is great, I really like that I have physical buttons to press down by the mousepad, shortcut keys are nice, windows I'm still adjusting to, but over-all great computer. There is no scroll feature on the mousepad, so that is kind of a let down. At first I was unsure if I wanted to go with this computer because of the screen resolution, but that hasn't really been a problem. The size is perfect, honestly. I don't think that the computer could be a better fit. It is a little heavy, but it's a full metal case, so that was expected. Also, I have noticed that I don't hit the shift key every single tie that I try to create a capital letter. That is one thing about this computer that I don't like. Even though the layout of the keyboad is nice, I have noticed that I need to put a little more pressure on the keys than what I am accustomed to doing. This is something I think most people need to adjust to when they get a new computer... Also, entirely my own fault so this is a warning to anyone that gets a computer through toshiba. When you turn the computer on for the first time, you need to go through the registration process where you type in all of your personal information, model number etc. Don't mess that up. It sounds like common sense, but I miss-typed one letter in my email, and I had try to figure out how to fix that by getting the ring around with Toshiba. Part of the problem was, at the time, I didn't know what my personal problem was with the computer, just that something went wrong in the registration. I was on the phone for literally hours before I finally figured it out and got the appropriate help. Moral of the story, if you don't know what the problem, then the help service isn't going to be incredibly helpful because they don't really fine tune the problems while on the phone. Don't make the stupid mistake I made and fill in the wrong registration information (duh, but it happens.

I've had better service elsewhere, but this was just one isolated bad experience. Toshiba might actually have really good costumer service, I don't know.

I got this computer as a Christmas present and I love it. I have not been disappointed in the least. For the money, it is absolutely worth what you get. My only disappointment is that it doesn't have a built in microphone for the webcam and I wish that the speakers were a little more powerful. Despite that, I am constantly surprised at the speed of this computer and it is incredibly light.

I was a little skeptical of getting an Acer instead of the more name brand computers such as Dell or Compaq, especially since Acer has only had a strong foothold in the netbook arena. Yet, once I experienced this computer, I would go with Acer again in an instant.

At $400.00 this is a hot little deal. Runs great for browsing the Internet and normal user products, ie Office, Photo Shop, etal. Plays media smoothly and handles everyday needs. I supplied two online students, my children of course, 1 each of this machine and it satisfies their requirements. I have found this laptop a dependable product.

I purchased this computer from Wal-Mart because I was tired of rent to own and having them call you every week before the payment is even due, or harassing the phones when you are a few hours late with a payment. I figure, why in the world continue to give a rent to own my hard earned money when I could just get my paycheck and buy an inexpensive Acer. So I did it. When I got paid I got this Acer. I originally wanted a different computer but I was given the wrong one by mistake. I was contemplating taking this back to retrieve the computer I paid for but this one was amazing! The webcam is crisp and it has a lot more space on the hard drive than other computers in this category. This unit came with Windows 7 and I was apprehensive because I had heard some awful stories about this OS but it turned out to be fine. I would recommend this laptop to anyone on a budget. The speakers on the computer are terrible, but I have Phillips computer speakers so this is a non-issue for me anymore. I would recommend getting this from somewhere other than Wal-Mart because I paid 530 dollars for this computer and it is cheaper everywhere else. Other than that, I recommend this times ten!

I have been using this labtop for the past two years and loved it, however, recently something happened to the screen. It is just white. The computer seems to boot up and it makes the sound when windows opens, but nothing shows up on the screen (it seems to be a common problem with acers if you google it, lots of similar cases come up). I tried to contact the customer service and ask for their advice. The computer is no longer under warranty, but I was hoping they could give me a price estimate and an address where I can ship my computer and get it fixed. I sent emails through their website, but noone replied. I found the phone number in the little booklet, the labtop came with. There was a message stating that number was no longer in service, I googled some customer service number and after being bounced of about four or five times, finally I got to speak with a person who told me to use the website and sent an email and someone would get in touch with me in 24 hours. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, sent another email and waited for a couple of days. It has been over a week, noone got back to me. It seems like they don't care much after you buy their product. They have lost a customer.

I love this laptop for all the reasons so many other reviewers have indicated, such as its considerable power and its incredibly beautiful, resolute screen. Thankfully, my unit seems to have mostly escaped the issue where the upper left corner of the screen comes unglued (knock wood!) I've got a very minimal protrusion there, but it doesn't seem to be worsening over time so far, and it's a minor enough issue that I'd probably just glue it if it got worse. Unfortunately, I was plagued by the maddening "touch screen stops working when the lid is closed and doesn't work until next cold-boot" issue, and after some time, the touch screen stopped working entirely, save for occasional very erratic points where it would spring back to life. I thought for sure it was a hardware problem and was tearing my hair out wondering whether to get another one or just jump ship to another model, which would have been a terrible shame as I absolutely love this machine. But I'm a stubborn SOB, and had a feeling there might be something more going on than meets the eye. After way too many hours spent trying everything imaginable, I finally stumbled upon the solutions to both forms of touch screen failure the failure upon closing the lid and more semi-permanent failure are both caused by simple, stupid bugs arising from the particular combination of Asus' touch screen interface design and Windows' USB power management algorithms. If your touch screen is going out when you close the lid, you probably have set the computer's power settings so that it "does nothing" upon closing the lid. Changing this setting to "sleep" after first restoring touch functionality, of course fixed the problem instantly and permanently for me, though this will probably only work if you first go into the Windows Device Manager and find the touch screen device it's a "USB Input Device" under the "Human Interface Devices" heading right click and go to "Properties", go to the "Power Management" tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". The more permanent-seeming touch screen failure was instantly resolved by disabling the "USB Selective Suspend" feature in the power settings and cold-booting. So if you're having touch screen problems, chances are excellent that your touch screen is actually fine, and all you need to do is change all the settings as I've indicated here, cold-booting first if necessary to bring the touch screen back to life before you start. Hope this helps someone!

I've had this computer for a couple weeks but having experience with laptops, this one is very well built and is exceptional in every way...mostly anyway.

Not sure what the one star is complaining about because this is backwards compatible and works fine with my router which is not "N". Also, for its size, it is NOT heavy. There are many more that are worse that are not near as good. Battery life also is not bad but not the best. I get four hours of regular use. A little less if using heavy. It does have BT 4.0 which has been fast for me. The 8gb ram and I7 make this smokin' and when SSD's get cheaper, i plan on putting one in! This is not an ultrabook so the one star should go find a machine that is tiny and not serviceable!

Anyway, great screen with touch! I have not had any issues like some have reported. There are a couple things that some may not like. One is light bleed under keys on backlit keyboard and two, finger prints. It is a magnet for them. Also, not sure what they were thinking about when they made the power supply...

Outside of those few minor things, this machine is smokin' fast and worth every penny! It isnt a gamers machine but plays most games very well. But then again, i'm not a true gamer and don't care to be! If you are, you would be better suited to find a dedicated graphics machine.

All in all, i love it and if you are a daily user doing some office work and watching a movie or listening to music, this is the machine for you!

Thanks!

I bought this laptop weeks ago and it is amazing! extremely fast processor, with 8 gb of ram is astounding. The ONLY bad parts to this laptop are the amount of fingerprints this attracts which ill buy a hardshell for, and the 1 mp camera which u can just buy a new one. if your curious if this is a good gaming laptop, I play league of legends and guild wars 2 and they run perfectly fine. Great price and completely satisfied overall.

Honest reviews on ASUS Q500A-BHI7T05 15.6" Touch Screen Laptop 8GB Memory 750GB HD

This is a very nice laptop for the price. Most other laptops with all the same features are well over 1000.00. I purchased mine at Bestbuy for 849.00. The only thing so far that I do not like about it is the speakers which are on the bottom of the laptop. why would anyone put speakers on the bottom of the laptop. I use a headset for my sound and that makes it much better.

Very fast and responsive. The touch screen is very nice and as far a finger prints all touch screens get finger prints so I do not feel that is a major concern.

Would definitely recommend this to my closest friend which I actually did.

You won't be disappointed if you buy this laptop.

I may not be the best reviewer since I was upgrading from an older than dirt single core amd but I LOVE this laptop, everything is snappy and it's even pretty good for gaming and since I'm usually on the go, I can finally have time for them. The touch screen driver issue is easily fixed by pressing fn+f1 to put it to sleep (Note, I did not say close it) and then wake the computer and it should work correctly.

I bought this laptop to replace a very lightweight Sony that had ran Vista and was starting to have issues, both with the software and the hardware (keyboard starting to act up). This Windows 7 Laptop is heavier but seems very well built. I think I saw something about being built to military standards for durability standards (I could be wrong on this), but it seems as it very well could have been. As it is now discontinued, I got it at a tremendous bargain, $600 versus $1200. I love the Windows 7 operating system and it's speed and ease of upgrading. I upgraded memory from 4GB to 8GB for $33 from HP. Very pleased with this laptop, no regrets. I bought it to use primarily as a business tool with client presentations.

The laptop was chosen to replace my broken Acer netbook. The goal was also to find a better screen size.

The computer was delivered quickly and no damage on the box. Within 5 minutes after inspection I had the computer running. The Dell D430 has the appearance of a solid machine and works faster than I expected. The screen is great, the sound a little tinny for watching movies. The wide screen is not 16:9 but the 1280x800 shows web sites and photos nicely. A sign of professional computers is that there are double buttons with the trackpad. There is also a trackpoint but I do not use that as I am geared towards the mouse.

As a "compact" laptop the machine is light, but not to light. There is no space for an optical drive, so they gave me an external USB connected drive. It does not burn DVDs but that does not bother me as I have other computers for that purpose. With the HD capacity of 60 GB, of which 20 GB are taken, there is no room for big projects. I searched for bigger hard disks as backup but 1.8 inch hard disks max out at 120 GB and get expensive (other than my broken netbook which came with a 250GB drive). So I use an SD card as storage extension (like for downloads) and an external drive for my video/audio/photo stuff. The USB ports have enough power to run my external drives. On top, there is a firewire port which I like for an external drive. Integrated Bluetooth runs my wireless mouse.

Dell has a weird power connector and I will be looking for a duplicate power tip because I do not want to be without a backup. The computer gets hot on the right side which I think is not unusual, especially not with dual core processors. So do not use it right on your lap but get a cooling pad.

Talking backup: XP and Dell utilities are on a hidden disk partition and I did not find out yet how to copy that to a hard disk. If the hard disk dies I want to be able to recover XP. My files are backed up on an external drive anyway. There was not a single sheet of paper with the computer so it takes some knowledge to work things out.

But right now: I am happy I bought that computer.

awesome computer :) i am more than pleased to say the least.

i ordered this computer and within three days (even on standard shipping) i received my package. It's somewhat small but i find it to be adorable. There were only 2 tiny scuff marks on the outside, barely noticeable, but otherwise it looks and runs brand new. It took me just minutes to get it up and running, and by the way, it runs quite fast. I, being the teenager i am, have already downloaded programs like iTunes a new web browser, a couple games and a couple other software components and it still runs amazingly fast. Though i have only had if for a little over a week, i cant seem to keep a way from it. It's quite a deal. A lot of people find the external cd/dvd drive a hasel but i find it convenient, it doesn't bother to much in travel and i mean what if it breaks? its easy to replace without having to pull the poor computer apart. anyways, i love this laptop and so far its been quite helpful. I will admit it does heat up rather quickly, but thats noting a simple cooling pad from walmart or so can fix. now, another downside is that there are only two usb outlets, and with a cooling pad, that only leaves you with one, so you would probably need to order a cheap usb port like i did to go with it to help in that issue, but other than that this product is a steal. I hope you make the right choice, i mean, it took me a month to find the right computer for me, and im quite satisfied.

P.S if you find you are not satisfied with its hard drive space, i recomend looking at amazons wide variety of external hard drives, i found a 160 gb one for only 36 $.

hope this review was helpful! :)

I'm satisfied with the new computer(: .The transaction was really fast, i got it within 5 days of purchase. The only thing I would say that i dislike about the pc, is that it heats up pretty fast, and it runs on about 2 hours of battery. Other than that, it performs quite well, and the programs that come with it, like the Open Office is fantastic! Overall it was a good purchase, especially for the amount of money spent.

Thanks again Sam

I purchased this laptop at a Black Friday sale for $600. I am an avid Linux user, so I installed Fedora 17 on it.

PROS:

*OS For the short time I used Windows 8, it worked fine. I just didn't like it.

*Speed The quad-core i7 processor and 8 GB of RAM allow it to run high-performance software.

*Keyboard It feels very nice when typing for long periods of time.

*Hard Drive 1 terabyte (1000 GB) gives you lots of space to work with.

*Webcam As long as you have enough lighting, the webcam looks good.

CONS:

*Wireless Card This thing has an old Realtek; If you use Windows, it is slow. If you use Linux (like me) you have bigger problems. Realtek doesn't have up-to-date drivers for the Linux kernel. I had to buy a Panda Ultra Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapter Windows XP/Vista/7/8, Mac OS X 10.6/10.7/10.8, Ubuntu 12.04 TLS, Fedora 17 and Puppy 5.3.3 Compatible in order to access the internet.

*Touchpad Using this thing for long periods of time is horrible.

*Battery Life It only lasts about 3 hours.

OTHER:

*Speakers The built-in speakers are mediocre.

*Graphics The Intel graphics chipset is average.

*Screen It looks fine unless you're looking from an angle.

This was a good buy for $600, but I don't know if I would buy it again for $750.

I'm not a techie, but an experienced user; no benchmark results here.

The lid on the laptop has no catch securing it to the body, so even walking around the house carrying the PC at my side as I would a book, I can feel the lid chattering against the body. The keyboard works well, but that too vibrates and makes a fair amount of noise as you're typing. It doesn't affect typing, and I'm sure it can't be heard from across the room, it just makes more noise than I would expect from a keyboard. I work with numbers so I like the 10 key setup built into the keyboard. The overall build quality feels really cheap; when you pick up the laptop there are a number of creaks as the plastic parts flex and the battery shifts slightly. I would be very concerned traveling with it unless it was enclosed in a snug sleeve (to keep the lid from chattering)and then packed into another case with plenty of padding.

The trackpad is pretty bad. Extremely sensitive at times, oblivious at others. Coupled with the mysterious swipes and functions recognized by Windows 8, you can have a REALLY exciting time at the keyboard watching things come and go on the screen. I use the laptop mostly with a bluetooth mouse and wired keyboard. When I work out of the house I'll be bringing my mouse.

The display is very good, very bright and readable except in bright light, where the glossy finish makes things difficult.

I've had the machine a couple of weeks, cycling the battery to check its life several times, and the battery lasts about two hours.

It's fairly large, at about 15X9. The good news is the large screen. The bad news is the bulk. Choose your poison.

The speed is there. Obviously subjective, but you don't have to wait long for start-up, restarts (a little over 1 minute for my machine, now with 12GB RAM), whatever. It comes with 8GB RAM (2x4). At least one of the 4GBers has to be pulled to increase the RAM.

Windows 8 is OK from the user perspective. Not great or horrible (sounds like a lot of other Windows versions!). Once you get used to it and can navigate through the screens intended for touch-screen use, it only (!) adds a couple of clicks to get to the desktop. You really have to wonder at the design, though, if it has to be adapted to keyboard use.

In spite of what reads as a slightly negative review, I'd buy the machine again. The value provided by the combination of processor speed, RAM, hard drive and price are tough to beat. Both the machine and the operating system occasionally feel like sand in my shorts, but for the price I can live with it.

5/14/13 update

Windows 8: There's no excuse. Same problems. Unless you power the PC down daily or restart daily, something won't work. I guess my biggest problem is getting used to the elegance and easy functionality of my iPad and iPhone, then expecting something similar from the PC. Maybe it's time to spring for an Apple. Sigh...

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite S855-S5168 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed

I loved my new Toshiba when I bought it last December...so fast, the keyboard sweet to use...

...then the hard drive died. Not completely. Just sometimes...resulting in crashes...

After having some trouble getting the data off the hard drive (not Toshiba's problem) ... I saw another one, for the same price, with 50% more memory.

So I sucked it up, and bought that. In April. Took another month or so for me to put it in use ... and then a bit more to get everything I wanted installed. Last Sunday, Sept 22...it started making a HORRIBLE noise. I suppose it's the fan.

Call up to get a replacement part on Monday. I can't. The people Toshiba has me order through ($50 please -other brand laptop fans: $15) can't access the Toshiba website. It's DOWN for at LEAST two days.

Finally called on Friday, Sept 27. There are no fans in stock. When they do get in stock -5-10 business days before I can get it.

(You wanna know why I don't ship it out under the warrantee I DO have with this machine??? Imagine waiting for my machine to come back to me...blah.)

Two laptops, less than 12 months...not able to be used.

(My 4 1/2 year old "bottom of the line" Acer, however, continues to run like a champ.)

Needless to say... As much as I love the speed, the sexy keyboard, and all...I will not be buying another Toshiba. I had such high hopes.

I decided to purchase this Lenovo laptop after about two months of serious shopping around. Research told me that Lenovo rates right under Apple for reliability, and Amazon's pricing afforded the best bang for the buck. I couldn't justify paying twice as much for an Apple with less memory and HD capability. I'm not disappointed with the Lenovo at all. I've had it about a month and it fills my every need. Love the backlit keyboard. The only thing that is bothersome is that as I type, the balls of my thumbs sometimes rest on the touchpad and cause undesirable consequences, but I guess that's just a matter of getting used to the mechanics of the thing. If the touchpad had been centered in the unit, this would be less of an issue. The Windows 8 OS took a couple of days to get used to, but I'm ok with it now. One thing I do miss from Win XP is the games package...not available in the Win 8 version. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

These are my impressions after using this Dell Inspiron 5720 laptop for a week:

The Intel i7 3rd gen. CPU is very fast and a pleasure to see in action. All of my Windows 7 applications are accomplished in record time. The Intel Graphics 4000 HD can keep up with any game I've loaded with ease. The Intel WiDi system sends HD audio and video to my 42 inch LCD TV via a Netgear PUSH2TV HD PTV2000 1080P Adapter for Wireless Display. Movies played on this laptop through the WiDi system are DVD quality. The Bluetooth on this laptop connects to my wireless stereo headphones with great range throughout an over 1000 sq ft multi-room structure. The Windows Experience Index is as follows: 7.5, 7.8, 6.5, 6.5, and the lowest disk data transfer rate: 5.9. The laptop's display is large and very clear (1600 x 900.) The 4 USB 3.0 ports are incredibly fast compared to USB 2.0. The sound system on this laptop is amazingly high quality for small speakers, including a small sub-woofer! Using an Inspiron 15R N5110 (Core i5 2nd gen.) as a reference, this laptop operates at a much lower temperature (estimate 50% less heat) so using it as a true "laptop" is very comfortable. The Switch lid system makes it very easy to change the cover; only blue, pink, and grey are available from Dell as of this review.

Please note: As with all new computers I own, I backup the original HDD image via Dell's Backup Software to 3 DVDs then reformat the HDD and install my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Dell's latest drivers and BIOS update. The above review was completed after I accomplished these actions.

The unit arrived with a defective motherboard and audio issues. Wasted a great deal of time on line with tech rep in India before he concluded the motherboard was defective. In the process he downloaded software which froze-up the computer requiring a restore that wiped out programs and configurations I had spent a great deal of time creating. The local repair service did arrive in 24 hours. However, some type of reconfiguration is needed after the repairs; I have now been advised I will have to waste more of my time with a tech rep because the service tag no longer matches the motherboard. I am having trouble loading many sites. The computer freezes and won't allow scrolling on about one site-in-three. The optical drive supplied with the unit is less than flimsy. I am having issues with the apostrophe key which alternately does not work or types two apostrophes. ''' Poor quality control is evident with this product. Sorry I bought it.

SupplementThe keyboard and motherboard have now failed a few hours after this review. Spent an hour on-line with India again and a repair tech is coming out. Dell should replace this junk

2nd supplement-This 8-day old computer got it's 3rd motherboard and a new keyboard today. The repairs did not fix the scrolling or typing problems. Dell agreed to ship me a new unit. However, this will be the 3rd time I have to configure and network one of these units and download my programs. I will have 25-30 hours of time wasted on the phone, with techs at my house and setting up a unit. Mere replacement fails to properly compensate a customer. Next time I will buy at Walmart where they take defective computer returns no questions asked.

The replacemet arrived yesterday. It has a dead pixel near the center of the screen which is annoying in a "new" unit. Can't tell if this one is new or reconditioned. The condition of the clear plastic keyboard protector hints at the latter. It works better than the old one but still has a scrolling freeze problem on the internet intermittantly. JCW

I'm not one to take the time to review many of my purchases, this has been such a nightmare that I must warn all other potential buyers. I've had the laptop for about a year now,

within the first month, usb ports did not work, i called dell they wanted me to mail them the laptop back for repair and they would return it within 2 weeks, I'm a wealth manager and use this laptop for work, i spoke with their supervisor and was able to get a tech to come to my office to fix it.

they had to replace the whole motherboard not just usb ports. after repair, within a week, modem and other components did not work. i called them again, they ended up sending me a whole new laptop, i had to spend the time to transfer all my data to the new laptop. The new laptop usb ports also did not work. I called them again and gave up on the repair, i can handle having some faulty usb ports, sometimes it doesn't recognize my dvd/r drive, good thing i don't use it for work.

a couple months ago, i started having some problems with the typing cursor, as I'm typing it jumps around and automatically jumps to a different part of the screen making it difficult to type full sentences.

I bought this thing from Fry's on sale, the salesperson even told me not to buy it, he recommended lenovos or asus laptops instead, i didn't listen thinking he was just incented to sell the products. I used to trust dell because their desktops are reliable, not the case with the laptops. Save yourselves major headaches and go with a different brand.

toshiba L755-S5280 is a very good laptop. Did every thing I expected. A few functional improvements could be implemented. I would prefer the touch pad be centered on the case rather than centered over the typing keyboard. Positioned to the left as it is, there is not a comfortable place to rest my left wrist while using the touchpad or typing. Also, it would be a great improvement if the touch pad scrolling feature could be turned off. While using programs such as excel, I often accidentily hit the scroll feature and the file screen jumps. Other wise a very reliable unit

This is by far my favorite laptop I've ever owned! This is my 5th laptop and first Asus. I am blown away with the build quality of the laptop. Very thin, very stylish, very fast! 750GB HDD operates like an SDD. 6GB Ram makes for a very seamless experience. This is also my first Windows 8 laptop and it takes a little getting used to but its actually a great UI. I could go on and on about how much I love this laptop but I'll spare you the time. If you are looking for a great experience with a quality laptop, do not hesitate to buy this product! 5 Stars!
