This laptop is an exceptional value. Fast processor and plenty of storage space (750GB). Glad I picked one up. Yes it has Windows 8, and like any other new software system, you will need to "figure some things out" but after a few minutes of browsing around and getting comfortable with it, the laptop is easy to use and Windows 8 is a non-factor. No issues with touch pad being in the way as another user stated.

This model does not have the ability to disable the touch pad. You will very likely erase content that has been typed. I have multiple times. Returning.

Do not like not being able to hit gold star for my favorites. I've lost some of my favorites that I need to contact. I really just don't like Windows 8.

I got the Satellite L755 for Christmas and it's was a really nice unit for the money, until today. You see, Toshiba, in it's infinite wisdom, suggests BIO updates periodically for your computer. I got a notice for one two days ago, and it basically says it's critical that you download this update. Well, the update crashed the computer. I went on line with my tablet to find out that this is a FREQUENT problem. Once you get the "verify error" during your BIOS update, you are done. Your computer will not boot, and you get nothing but black screen, with the fan running. I figure, hey, the thing is only a few months old, I hope I have some sort of warranty, right? WRONG! First, I try tech support, where they promptly inform me that my "complimentary phone support " has expired. Apparently, Toshiba feels that if their product lasts more than a few months, they have satisfied their obligation to produce a quality product. Second, the tech support line asks you for a credit card number before allowing you to speak with their outsourced Indian rep named "Steve". Wow, so here I am after a $500 purchase, with no machine, 100's of downloaded files gone (although most of it is backed).

In conclusion, if you think you are going to save money on this unit, you are wrong, because you will be right back in the market for another in just a few months. I have struggled with lesser expensive units all of my life, because I simply can't afford an Apple, but I think I have finally seen the light. I can't afford NOT to buy an Apple now! Even if it's a craigslist deal, it's better than the Toshiba!

I have owned Toshiba laptops for over ten years. I really expected a better product when I bought this one. But it is not. My two complaints so far are the memory and the wirless network adapter. The adapter that they installed is a Realtek that is six years old and really lacks in proformance. I had to buy a usb adapter. They put two small memory chips inside. So in order to upgrade and max it out you have to buy two chips instead of one, another hundred bucks.

Besides that everything else is as advertised and work great.

Spend a little more and buy the next step up if you are buying for the name Toshiba.

Is a fantastic computer, but be aware don't upgrade the bios (I did from ver. 2.20 to 2.90) when I did the program tell me "Verify error", I don't care about it, but after the reset my computer was dead. No logo, no beep, nothing, right now is at warranty for it, and I'm waiting, after that, I'll write about my experince here in Venezuela. Good luck!

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L755-S5350 15.6-Inch LED Laptop - Fusion Finish

First, after having the computer only a few weeks, the hard drive had "bad sectors" and had to be replaced. Tech support and customer service both wanted me to take it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy, 1 1/2 hours away. When I said that wouldn't be possible, they agreed to send me a box to ship it to their repair center. After confirming my email and mailing address twice, they still sent me the email that I had to reply to BEFORE they would send the box to the wrong email address. Now what if I hadn't had a work laptop I could bring home or even access to a second computer? When I called back they were apologetic, got the email out and then a WEEK later I got the box. Sent my computer out the next morning and another TWO weeks later finally go a working computer back. A total of a month to fix a brand new computer.

Second, the touch pad is terrible. The screen zoom is the worst part of it. I've tried adjusting it to be less sensitive but it still zooms in/out even if you have the tinest part of your thumb lightly resting on the pad next to the control button and then move the pointer with your other hand. Then, because I've turned down the sensitivity, it's a pain to get it to zoom back out/in. Also, sometimes the left control button seems to stop working and I can't click on hyperlinks. Even after reading the user's manual, which was not provided with the computer and must be downloaded, I can't figure out why. Call tech support you say? Why, so I can be without my personal laptop yet another month?

This laptop is just simply great. It's fast and reliable. The specs are great for the price you can find nowadays. I like how there is a 10 key unlike HP. I bought this for my sister and this laptop is a lot easier to use than my HP laptop. My sister will definitely love this laptop. This laptop would make a great gift!

I purchased this laptop shortly after Windows 7 came out. I found a deal on it for $450 or so at Office Depot. I am not an avid Office Depot shopper (and actually used to work there), but I decided to check this out. I got the laptop, had everything setup relatively quickly, and realized that it came with Windows 7 32-bit installed (my lack of homework, but didn't turn out to be a problem). This is the one of only reasons (see next paragraph for other) I give this laptop a 4 star rating. Someone who is even moderately tech savvy can install Windows 7 64-bit with the exact same key, which is on the bottom of the laptop completely free and 100 percent Legal (Windows 7 keys allow for EITHER 32-bit or 64-bit installation). Some of the software for the computer that is on the disc is a bit more challenging to find the 64-bit drivers for, you will have to look for the 64-bit folder. This is worth the extra effort in my opinion. Google it and you will find plenty of forums if you need any help (especially on ).

Pros: This laptop for bucks with 4GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, 16 inch wide screen, HDMI output, and 64-bit Processor and 64-bit Windows 7 (with a bit of work as said above), is clearly a steal! A brand that is lesser known in the mainstream market, because of less advertising, means you don't pay for the Dell, Apple, or Sony advertising. This is a well known brand in the motherboard industry.

Cons: The one problem I have noticed is that occasionally when it tries to hibernate it will not be able to come out of it. I just restart and everything is fine. I have avoided most of this problem by forcing my hard drive to stay on in the power settings. I know it has crashed when the power button LED does not flash anymore (which it normally does when its sleeping). This may be a Windows 7 thing, might be specific to Windows 7 64-bit, or may be the laptop. I am not 100 percent sure where this problem is coming from.

In repsonse to the reviewer talking about tech support and such. Obviously MSI support can only do so much when you haven't done all your research. In your review it even sounded like they answered all your questions and waived some of the cost for you. There were things you did not understand from the get go that you should have. This is not a case of poor MSI support, rather lack of customer due diligence. I am tired of customers rating the product poorly because they haven't done their homework. It sounded like this reviewer looked at a few laptops, chatted with a sales person at Office Depot for an hour, and thought he knew everything he needed to purchase a laptop. The Office Depot guy's job is to sell you a freaking laptop, NOT to do all your homework and make the best decision for you. He is going to have basic knowledge of the products for sale, not enough for you to make a great decision.

I will 1st note that I've had this laptop for just under 5 months after having the fortune to grab it during last Thanksgiving Black Friday special during which Office Depot had it on sale for only $429!

At that price, it was a sure BUY and and I would rate it the top 5-star rating for 'meets expectations.' Still, even not accounting for the amazing price I got, I rate this laptop 4 stars for both overall features and quality.

My last 2 laptops, purchased in 2004 and 2007, were both by Toshiba, so admittedly I had reservations buying "MSI," a brand I had never heard of before. But after finding out that it's actually a very large maker of mother boards and other innards of pc's for other brands, and that MSI gives a 3yr warranty, that was enough for me to take a chance and buy this brand. Thus far, I'm very happy with the solid construction of the laptop and the fact that (1) everything works right out of the box, and (2) there were very few pre-installed programs and trial-ware software (mostly junk) that other companies like HP or Dell would include that would just slow down the computer (especially at start-up) and take up space on the hard drive.

Windows 7 works and looks like a dream come true, and runs super fast with this Core 2 Duo and 4gb of RAM A+ for that! I'm using it in 32bit, not 64 like some folks.

Finally, the bottom line positive point of this laptop for me was that, after my negative experience with 'integrated Intel graphics' that was on my last Toshiba laptop purchased in 2007, I swore my next laptop must have a graphics chip from Nvidia or ATI, not Intel! At this price, specs/screen size, one would be hard pressed to find a comparable laptop that doesn't force u to have 'integrated Intel graphics'! If you don't game at all, then Intel graphics shouldn't matter, but if you play any games, avoid integrated Intel graphics.

The only 2 negatives worth noting are:

(1) the speakers on the laptop are surprisingly weak and would sound like they are cracking when you play music/movie above 80% of max volume; and

(2) the touch pad is way too sensitive as other reviews have stated when you type, your palm or fingers will brush on it causing the cursor to jump elsewhere and u end up typing in the wrong place or clicking when u didn't mean to. 100% of the time, when I have a mouse attached to the laptop, I will 'lock' the touchpad (turn off the touchpad).

Thank you Office Depot for offering a GREAT price for this pretty awesome laptop!

The MSI A6000 is a good performer at a great price. But MSI is a TERRIBLE company to depend upon. As others have noted, there provide no documentation, warranty papers, disks etc. with the computer. Try to reach them--they hide their company phone number. MSI does not offer an 800#, no 24/7 tech access, no phone answered live at HQ.

They want you to contact them on the Internet about problems with your computer--with that requirement you are out of luck if you don't have a second computer at hand while trying to fix your MSI.

That's a crazy business model on which to build a base of satisfied customers. Their site and blog says how responsive they. But they are not responsive at all. While I like the A6000, I didn't know thill now how risky it is to depending upon MSI's primitive company tech service system. I now regret purchasing this MSI machine. I will resell it and get a computer brand with 24/7 support. BEWARE OF purchasing MSI products untill they get a real and responsive customer support and service operation going in the USA. CBY

Now i own 3 MSI A6000-030US the only difference from the A6000-030US and the A6000-029US is the blu ray player that is all. @Jalard i totally agree with your post. They have been flawless for me. MSI is know for those who say they are unknown. MSI is well internationally known for their motherboards. I have been a comp tech since 1990. Also its like a car. if you dont maintain it it will break down on you. Take care of your laptop and it will take care of you.

I do not like this laptop at all! The keyboard setup is a major pain, very cramped, and where the mouse pad is located everytime you type, you accidently touch the pad and it moves your cursor! Half the time the numbers on the other side of the keyboard don't work, and after only 6 months the battery is completely dead! What's the point of having a laptop is I have to keep it plugged in! Not worth the money! Keep looking people!

This is a great, ultra portable laptop! It's definitely all performance with none of the frills of most other laptops (unless you indulge in a fingerprint scanner). Okay, sure, it doesn't have the best graphics card, but who honestly looked at this and thought, "gaming computer!". It's powerful, reliable, and great for business or for people who like to work when they travel. Plus all of the intense lenovo recovery ware makes you feel safe in the event that it DOES mess up on you. As long as you can turn the computer on, you can get all of your files onto an external hard drive and easily restore the computer to an earlier state-without ever having to log into windows. As a student, I appreciated the ease with which I could travel with this laptop, as well as its speed and processing capability.

I loved this at first -i thought, 2.6Ghz i7, 4gb memory, 320gb hard drive, like 12hrs of battery life with 9-cell li-ion, beautiful ibm keyboard, 3lbs ultraportable and rugged, for less than $1000. "omg i love life."

Unfortunately there are some serious shortcomings with this laptop, as follows:

unstable, weak keyboard: peeling off the keys to clean makes it impossible to reattach the keys, unlike in previous ibm thinkpads which are ultra rugged. they really cut corners on the quality. even popping off and replacing one letter keys has caused that key to be unreliable ever since; on fast typing it doesn't fire correctly. what's the point of a blazing hot i7 when, when you're typing you have to go back to correct 'coectly'? because i'm afraid to touch the keyboard now, it's gathering dust in the corners and is hard to clean.

rapidly degrading battery. maybe 6hrs instead of the advertised amount.

whenever i'm running on battery, the screen inexplicably whites out (extremely high contrast to an almost unreadable state) for 30 seconds at a time, every half hour or so.

wireless card not very good: everytime i take the computer from standby, it shuts off; it doesn't interface well with access points; it blinks out sometimes -the drivers are no good at all

the latch connecting the battery to the computer is defective; when you drag the computer forward on a surface, it disconnects and the power cuts out, making you lose all your work

the keyboard is the biggest deal for me, but all these other things made me feel like lenovo threw out all the quality and ruggedness that made ibm thinkpads great. i loved that old keyboard and now it's just not the same. tl;dr next time, i'm getting an overpriced macbook

still 3 stars for great processor, ram, and price. i'm not afraid of firing up programs and running multiple browser windows, stuff i couldn't do on my old computer. too bad the KEYBOARD doesn't wok (i mean work).

Great ultrabook for the money... sleek and beautiful. Not a fan of Windows 8, and VERY little instruction on how to use the ultrabook itself and the programs. Security is on a trial basis, so you have to download security very soon after purchase. Also Windows Office is on a trial, so another purchase if you want that. All in all, for the money, it's a good one to consider.

I bought a Sony Vaio SVT14117cxs and absolutely hate it. I bought a Sony because I was tired of all the others dying after 1.5 to 2.5 years.I thought I would try a Sony. This thing sucks. The pointy corners bite into your for arms when really using it as a laptop. The battery is screw in so if your computer freezes you need to get a flat head screw driver and unsrcrew the battery. This has happened several times in less than 6 months. The network interface card is frequently becoming not connected to the lan. I have to disconnect and re-connect through the network window. None of my other computers at home have this issue. The new windows 8 operating system sucks. I have used computers since the mid 80's and this is by far the worst user interface yet released from windows,

I have the 15.6" version of this and its a great laptop for the price. The graphics card is integrated and runs on system RAM, meaning it will outperform many 1-2gb cards with dedicated RAM when the laptop demands more performance. The A10-4600m is a strong AMD CPU, able to compete with the comparablely priced Intel i3 & i5 CPUs. For gaming purposes, it will run almost all newer games at low-medium settings with antialiasing off. Older games 3+ years old all run at high-ultra settings, including games like Fallout 3/NV, Oblivion, Age of Empires 3, Bully, Company of Heroes, Lord of the Rings BFME2, and many others without issues. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a graphics intensive laptop for music and video editing, as well as gaming or just facebooking.

I receive this laptop has a present. Its worked fine so far. No problems at all. It plays games like Minecraft, and even the original Halo combat evolved pretty well. If you are using it right, the battery could last for four hours, which is nice. Like I said in the title, it is a all around nice laptop.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY DV7 17.3" Quad Core Laptop, 8GB DDR3 Memory, 750GB Hard

I got this for family and for hobby Android software development. It seems to work great for both purposes. It all feels pretty snappy (certainly compared to the 10-year-old Pentium M that it's replacing, but also doesn't feel any more sluggish than my work i5-based laptop). For just plain web browsing, it's very decent (Browsermark 4530 with Chrome).

Development work:

It's fast enough to run the Kindle Fire HD emulator that I couldn't run on my old laptop. In hindsight for that purpose it would have been better to get an i5-based laptop so that I could use HAXM which needs the Intel variant of the virtualization extensions. Still, for Android emulation purposes I can run Bluestacks on it, and Bluestacks runs at a very nice speed (it must be using the AMD virtualization, as expected since they have a partnership with AMD).

Startup times for things like Eclipse are good, and build times are fine.

I installed Cygwin and, just in case I need a real Linux for something (I sometimes find a need to run something on a Linux machine), VirtualBox with Lubuntu in it. I haven't played much with VirtualBox/Lubuntu except to start Firefox and install Chromium in it, and it seems to work at an OK speed (Chromium gets 3851 Browsermark, with only one CPU core dedicated to VirtualBox), so the virtualization extensions on the A10 must be doing their job.

Fun:

Haven't really tried any games other than Minecraft and Trine, which work quite smoothly. Most of the non-phone games I play are old, sometimes very old (e.g., Infocom text adventures) so I don't foresee any difficulties.

Screen:

Nice and bright. I was concerned about the glossy screen--I've always had only matte screens, but it's generally fine. The colors were a bit muted until I ran the Windows color calibration (Windows+Q and type in "calibrate") after which they are *really* nice. Slightly higher resolution would be even nicer, but this is acceptable. Unfortunately, the calibration was being reset each time I logged in, but I fixed that by starting the task manager (ctrl-alt-delete, Task Manager), going to Startup, and right clicking on Catalyst to disable Catalyst. (I didn't really need Catalyst Control Center.)

Trackpad:

I do occasionally hit it with my palm and it moves the screen. A smaller trackpad would be better, as would one that's better placed. This one is so placed that for natural typing, almost half of the right hand would be over the trackpad. One can turn it off, though, if that's a problem, with a double tap on its upper left corner. (Which also turns on a nice trackpad-is-off light.) If this continues to be a problem, I'll have to see if there is some software or hardware solution.

Sound:

The sound is very good for a laptop. Laptop sound has always been too quiet for me but this one is loud enough for comfortable movie watching.

This is my fourth laptop. I originally used it just as a backup in my office. When my Toshiba died, I began using it regularly. The keyboard feels cheap, the touchpad making a clicking sound as you use it. It seems to have a mind of its own, with the touchpad sensitivity the likely culprit. It changes font size, opens other programs, etc. for no reason. The connection with my router is much weaker at a distance than with my Toshiba. I should note that it first failed when it was two months old. The customer service was surprisingly good and helped me repair the problem in two hours. However, when friends would extoll the virtues of Dell because its customer service was so good, I would note that it is even better when the computer is so well built that you don't need customer service. I would never buy an ASUS again.

I purchased this laptop because of Toshiba's reputation on quality and reliability. When I received it, I was not disappointed. The laptop feels solid and sturdy and runs very smooth. There were not many Toshiba applications pre-installed on the system but did uninstall a few. If you are in the market for a solid, well configured and mid-budget laptop look no further than this system here. Do not get fooled into thinking you need the newest processor and the largest hard drive. The average user would not even notice a difference between the two.

I highly recommend this laptop!

This is a really nice looking laptop. The full size number-pad is awesome. The price is right, and you can't beat Toshiba's laptop quality or durability. Be forewarned, however, that despite what the Toshiba web-page shows, this laptop DOES NOT HAVE an HDMI port! Also: The LAN is only 10/100 no gigabit! While this isnt the end of the world, these features are included in many other laptops of similar price. For these reasons, I sent this laptop back and purchased an NV55C38u. While not as stylish, the NV55C38u has the missing HDMI port, Gigabit LAN, a larger hard drive, and a few extra USB ports all for the same price as the Toshiba.

I purchased my Satellite 15 months ago and have loved it until two weeks ago when the 2 USB ports on the right-hand side came loose and fell inside. I took the computer to a repair shop and was told this is a common issue with Toshiba laptops due to the weld Toshiba uses for the ports; they couldn't repair it but could send it in to Toshiba for repair -at a cost of $400! I contacted Toshiba and was told that since I was 5 months out of warranty, they could repair it, but it would cost me ... $400! If you go online and search for Toshiba USB Port problems, you will find a slew of people that have experienced the same issue with their Toshiba laptops, even current year models. Save your money and purchase a different brand of laptop.

I am not a technical wizard but i bought this laptop for a road trip for work and im using it to type on right now and love it. I have not had any problems with it and for what i paid for it i cannot complain about one thing. Mine definitely has the hdmi port and everything else advertised so i would recommend this to just about anybody. The only thing i can see is it does not have anything great for graphics but i am not too worried about that. Overall Great Deal

It was bought this to replace my old laptop when it died suddenly. Overall I am pleased with the laptop. It boots extremely quickly and is average weight for a computer of its size. The screen is bright and a nice size. I had to turn the screen brightness down to about 75% before I was comfortable viewing the screen for extended periods. I work with numbers making the full numeric keypad a selling point; however, the entire keyboard has gaps between each key which will take some getting used to. I thought the offset touchpad would be awkward, but you don't really notice because it is centered on the alphanumeric keyboard.

There's no dedicated external volume control. You can use control+F9 or F10 or the on screen volume bar. Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but is not as bad as some reviews that I had read.

Only other complaint is that Toshiba did not include any recovery CDs which they used to do. When you initially set up your computer it asks if you'd like to create DVD or USB recovery materials. You do not have to create them at start up, but it is recommended.

There's already a screw missing in the screen, just fell out... Windows 8 takes some getting use to wont download all my pictures from my phone, but the laptop it's self is great. I had my last Toshiba for 4yrs before the Charger plug outlet came lose inside, I had to keep taking it apart to reattach it... HOpe this one lasts a long time too

Battery life is not good

Keyboard is difficult and awkward to type on

Windows 8 is NOT user friendly (not the fault of the laptop though)

I would definitely not recommend this laptop

I ordered a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and paid for overnight delivery. It showed up days later -and no one contacted me from Amazon to say it would be late.

Then, when it came, it was damaged. They wouldn't overnight it for Saturday delivery, and said it would show up on Monday. It didn't. You would think that when you already get a damaged item, Amazon would take care to ensure you're a happy customer. But, no such luck. I guess this happens when you get so big. I am not sure I'd trust them with that level of a purchase again.

(The laptop seems to be decent, by the way. Still checking it out.)

Toshiba's are cheaper because they manufacture their own hard drives and LCD's and pass the vertically integrated savings to their owners.

Whether by design or consequence, it is harder to find a more OSX and LINUX ready laptop,

If you hate Windows 8 more than blood porno, it is just horny for Windows Servers and other Windows all the way back to Vista.

Jack up the RAM to the max and you'll launch Hypver-V or VMware guests easier than monkey's flinging poop.

I've personally installed 2012 Datacenter edition with every single service and role enabled while launching six simultaneous 64-bit LINUX and Windows VM's without crashing or lag.

The wide high res screen makes it a practical iMax for your porn..... I'm gonna stop on that note because it can only get awkward from here.

Keep shopping and comparing, and you won't find a comparably priced system unless it was carjacked or a refurb. Bet me money on that, I'll win everytime even the day after Thanksgiving, ... you wanker.

Review of Dell XPS XPS13-9001sLV 13-Inch Laptop (2nd Generation Intel Core

Dell XPS XPS13-9001sLV 13-Inch Laptop Silver

I purchased this Dell XPS XPS13-9001sLV with i7 1.7 GHz processor, 4GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD about two weeks ago after a thorough search of the available reviews and spending several hours in the local Best Buy and MCX electronics section. I also looked at the Samsung, Sony, Asus, and Toshiba ultrabooks and with both i5 and i7 processors as well as briefly at the MacBook Air. I found generally that the ultrabooks were all competent players, each with one small thing the others lacked; usually in the form or function of video outputs or number of USB 3.0 ports.

For my work, I needed a Windows 7 platform. I have been running Ubuntu for the past two years because I couldnt stand how slow my old laptop with Windows XP had become. Recently the online tools I use switched to exclusively MS Internet Explorer which necessitated the purchase of a new machine.

In choosing the XPS it was a tradeoff in some capabilities (processor series and speed) and some quantity and type of outputs (1 USB3, 1 USB2, 1 mini Video, NO SDHC card reader) in order to have a smaller, lighter, more rigid, and potentially longer lasting device.

I have been extremely pleased with the operating speed of the XPS 13. In practical terms, the XPS boots from a cold start into Windows 7 in 12-13 seconds and boots into Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in 11-17 seconds. Additionally, it performs as advertised in its ability to wake from hibernation in 2-3 seconds and from a rest in about a second. Download and internet operating speeds are also excellent, and the fastest I've seen in any computer. My newest U.S. Govt. HP loads most sites like Hotmail or Facebook in 5-7 seconds, but the little XPS will do it in 1-2. I have downloaded several large files and installs and have been happy with the performance of the machine during sustained downloads as well.

When it comes to battery life I knew I was giving something up to get an ultrabook, but in practical usage it has been a pleasant surprise that I can get 3.5 hours out of a charge running Windows 7, surfing the net, downloading and running an external drive. In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS it is even more efficient pulling 4-5 hours, even while charging my phone.

The screen is bright and clear and quite large for such a small machine. Although perhaps not as hi-def as a full retina display, it is much more than DVD quality and plenty big enough. It provides a crisp image throughout and didn't display any tendencies towards motion tracking or blurring when I played a DVD.

The case is perhaps the most attractive part of the machine, but it also functions superbly as a stiff, light and durable frame. The little XPS is significantly stronger than any other laptop I have used, including my wife's MacBook Pro17. The XPS doesn't display any flex in the keyboard or hinge wobble. The build quality and strength were very important to me after my last laptop, a Sony Vaio, popped and flexed when I picked it up by the corner (allowing it to disconnect its own Wi-Fi card; and thereby making itself useless as a portable device).

Pros:

-Beautiful form factor

-Excellent feel of quality and durability

-Excellent speed and efficiency in a light weight package

Cons:

-Only a few ports and no SD/HC reader means you will be buying external accessories if you don't already have them

Some of the deciding factors for me were:

-Light, small, and easily portable

-Strong physical makeup to last a long time on the road and traveling

-Good build quality

-Good battery life

-Gorilla glass screen is durable, easy to clean and beautiful

-Most capable processor available in an XPS 13

Runner up was: Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A02US 15-Inch Ultrabook (Ash Black); $1499.99

Deciding factor: The XPS-13 exuded the most quality for the money/inspired the most confidence

Additional accessories or programs purchased or installed:

-LG external DVD-R

-USB 3.0 SD/SDHC/MiniSD/MemoryStick card reader

-Mini video to HDMI plug/pigtail

-Mini video to VGA plug/pigtail

-USB Common Access Card Reader

-ActivClient 6.2 software

-MS Office 2010

-Skype

-Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

-Libre Office Suite

This ultrabook has similar size, weight and appearance to a MacBook Air 13, running Windows 7 (upgradable to Windows 8). It is possible to create a special partition in the 256M SSD drive and install Ubuntu.

The computer runs smoothly and fast.

The cons: Screen resolution is 1366 x 768. It could be better. Like the MacBook Air, the machine has only 2 USB ports, no ethernet port and a mini-DVI port to connect an external display. Unlike the MacBook air it does not have an SD card reader.

The pos: Very fast SSD and quad i7 processor. Very robust construction and light weight. Keyboard is large, illuminated and agreeable to use.

Really must say I've never had a better notebook. I got pushed into it when Windows * was released and didn't want to be trapped into another ME or ME2, and I knew Windows 7 was a solid as XP. Normally I have it connected to a large display and separate keyboard and mouse but when it has to go it is very convenient, particularly with the long battery life. I suspect a major benefit is provided by the solid state drive and the unit starts up and shuts down in seconds. I've had it hooked to a TV using a USB to HDMI cable, to a DVD drive and an external backup drive and to Ethernet using a USB to Ethernet cable. At first I used a mini display port to VGA adapter but I'd recommend against it. The bulky little box and stiff cable mounted so close to the mini display port put a lot of stress on the connection and in fact the adapter became intermittent after a short while so I sought out a dedicated cable so the stress on the port is minimized. Fortunately the problem was in the adapter because replacing the connector in the notebook would be an expensive chore so abuse should be avoided.

So fast you can't believe it. Be sure to update all the drivers. Have yet to run the battery all the way out after 6 1/2 hr battery use. Love the keyboard-lit and great tactile response..The 2d generation Core I7 is lightening fast. Saved nearly $400.00 at Amazon. It's the first generation of this model, but great quality touches and responsiveness. If Amazon has any of these Dell XPS 13's left at that price-snap them up!

I've mainly always been the kind of person that likes bigger laptops, basically a portable desktop. Once I looked into the ultrabooks because I wanted something sleeker smaller and easier to get around for work I had an HP ultrabook but returned it and got the Dell ultrabook and couldn't be happier. I never preferred Dell computers because I thought they where to much of a commercial brand but after comparing the HP and the Dell ultrabook, Dell KICKS ASS!!! Highly recommend!!!!

My version of the Precision M6400 came with the full 12Gb of RAM and the Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 3.07 GHz processor, somewhat upgunned from the boilerplate listing. It also came with a Seagate 500Gb 7,200rpm HDD. I happened to have its twin, so I installed the pair in a RAID0 configuration. I have an Intel Quad Core Q9100 processor which I will be installing in place of the T9900. Even though the computer is 4 years old, with its video card, I have a unit which will do everything I want to do in Photoshop and DxO for years to come; and I can always upgrade the video card too.

The Dell is a thing of beauty, at least to my eyes fine industrial design executed to perfection in excellent materials, no corners cut, no unnecessary flourishes. Every time I pick it up and put it across my knees yes, I don't have a desk to put it on I'm a happy camper. The keyboard is wonderful to type on, the screen is crystal clear and the colour depth stunning, the touchpad and the buttons, and the pointing stick are finely tuned and responsive. Almost every aspect of the computer can be adjusted in the BIOS or in on-screen menus. People comment about the system's weight, but that is a necessary price that has to be paid for the build, including in my case two hard drives, and absolute rigidity and protection of the internal components.

This is the best computer I have ever owned, and I have lost count. I started with an XT clone in 1986.

I have had my M6400 Covet for almost 2 years now. It is a great desktop replacement, but portability is not a strong suite. I've carried it on trips but it is just too heavy--best as stationary.

Performance wise, no compliants, runs anything. It has the QX9300 Quad Core and I have it at 8 GB out of 16 GB max; it is fast, but upgrading to 16 GB is cost prohibitive for me now. Running Windows Vista 64 Bit. Have 2 hard drives installed. The laptop screen is beautiful to behold, but I use it docked with a 24 inch external display at 1920 x 1200, a IBM keyboard and three mice--it is a desktop replacement for me.

The newer M6500 has greater capability with i7 processor, 2 GB of video ram and 32 GB of system ram capacity. You can never keep up. But this suits my needs for a while.

I don't do gaming so don't know how it is, but should be awesome.

Bought this for my husband, he has been through plenty of laptops and found a reason not to love them. But this one is wonderful, he has bragged and bragged since he got it that this is a laptop.

The DELL M6400 is a very good product. I am glad I have it and although it was 6.0 months used before, it works very well for all my needs.

Thank you very much.
