I purchased this HP Laptop to replace one that I'd had for five years, that really couldn't keep up with my growing business and personal demands on it, and it had been a top-of-the-line HP as well! I wanted something that had at least 8GB of RAM, check. It had to be able to expand its memory, yes I'm going to be purchasing two 8GB memory cards in a couple of weeks. It had to be 3rd generation (i7) check. Well, that was pretty much everything on my checklist well, it pretty much had to be an HP I looked around our local stores, and found a couple of non-HP contenders, but they weren't really everything that I felt comfortable about, then I saw this one and bam! it was love at first site I love the almost noiseless keys, which is great for conference calls, because I can type and talk at the same time, or listen and type without having to stick the mute on; I love the fingerprint/biometric logon reader with it, I can store all my passwords as my fingerprint, really safe! It never, ever, gets hot so I could rest it on my bare thighs and it would not burn try that with other laptops! The wi-fi on-off key is no longer at the front, where it can be turned off accidentally, but on the top row of the keyboard, much better. The headphone/microphone jacks, again, no longer at the front which is a pain, but at the side. The 3XUSB 3.0 and 1XUSB 2.0 ports is excellent! It also has this neat little flip-down cover over the LAN port at the side too, again really functional. Overall, it's really, really fast and I haven't even upgraded the RAM yet, it's reliable, (well, it's an HP) and it's long-lasting oh, did I forget to mention that it lasts 8 hours unplugged?

Overall, this is a solid machine, with some very strange quirks.

My main gripe with this laptop is the REALLY weird offset touch pad.

Instead of being centered on the spacebar, it's moved to the right about an inch, which puts it under the right palm when you're typing using your home keys. That means when you type, your mouse magically moves all over and places your cursor in random locations unless you turn off the touchpad. This is a REALLY bad design. Basically, you have to have an external mouse and disable the touchpad since touch typing, using the home keys, means your palm is wresting on the touchpad. Luckily HP included a hot zone on the touchpad that allows you to turn it off with a double tap. Let me repeat; you absolutely MUST have an external mouse to type on this computer.

The keyboard itself has been mapped such that the keys are HPs own idea of use. means screen brightness down, NOT rename. You must use "Function" key combo's to access the original meanings of the keys. I am a computing professional, so for me, this is a hassle. Thankfully, still means refresh. If you don't use or know the meanings of the keys, this will not matter to you and is probably a good thing since brightness and volume are immediately accessible. I will likely go download some software to remap the keys back to what they should be.

The arrow keys are non-standard and you have to look every time to get your fingers located correctly.

The keys are flat, which supplies less feedback than I'm use to, but it's more like the mac flat, so if you like cool, then that's great, but this is not something you'd want to type on all day. There is just less keyboard feel than I like. My typing speed and accuracy are dramatically reduced on this keyboard.

HP is known for loading bloat-ware and this machine is no different. I spent the first 3 days of ownership removing all the bloated garbage software they had preinstalled. Once I'd cleaned house I have no complaints with performance. It's a good machine.

That sounds like a list of complaints, and it is, but I can't load up on kuddo's for Windows when I'm reviewing an HP computer. Once you know the hassles, it's just a computer and seems pretty decent. I've had it for several months and am pleased with its performance and response. My gripes are about simple "feel" type things. We'll just have to wait and see how well it ages in a year.

Trying to stick within a budget, and after much research, I think this computer gave me the most bang for my buck. I chose to stick with Windows 7 after reading the reviews on the bugs in Windows 8, which is fine with me and will serve my purposes. It's a solid unit, nice large screen, and the keyboard touch is excellent. This is an upgrade from my desktop model, which I needed to provide mobility for work. Creating videos is a breeze which is more of a hobby, so all-in-all, I got exactly what I wanted . I was a little nervous purchasing something online I couldn't touch, but the reviews won me over. I was quite pleased to see this computer was everything as advertised and more. I've had it for a week and no complaints.

Updated after owning this computer for a couple of months:

I've been using some software similar to AutoCAD, but not nearly as extensive. The graphics are high-end and while rendering them to video, the computer shuts down and the message I receive is something along the lines of "my graphics card has recovered from a serious problem." For now I'm not able to render videos. I do render high-end still pictures of my the projects which works fine, however, the computer runs pretty hot during this process. I prop it up to allow cool air to circulate. This is the only time it runs that hot.

One other issue I'm having is that when I attach my HP Printer (which is only a few months old as well), the system crashes on me again, does a memory save & dump and then restarts. I've reinstalled the drivers and it works for a time but after awhile the same thing happens. My display & printer drivers are up-to-date so this is a mystery to me... especially since these are both HP products.

Other than that, I'm still happy with it. I believe I got what I paid for. This post is for anyone who happens to be buying it for projects such as I've mentioned. It might be worthwhile to upgrade to something a little more upscale.

I got this in January 2013 to replace a dying HP CQ120. I am an MBA student and I originally wanted to get a cheap laptop to use for school just for doing research but the specs of this laptop kinda convinced me so I bought it. Let me review it by providing star rating to the important features:

1. Cool Sense: 5 Stars It's really really cool! I use it all day and sometimes until midnight and the laptop just stays cool. My old HP

CQ120 gets really hot and I clearly feel the difference. Love it!

2. Placement of the Power Supply: 2 Stars I really do not know what made them design it this way but it gets in the way of the mouse

They could have placed it in another location or they could have used a power supply plug that is bent 90

degrees so the power supply cord goes towards the back and does not block the mouse. Bad Design!

3. Metal Finish: 5 Stars It looks and feels elegant. Nice!

4. Chicklet Keys 3 Stars. I don't really like them. They feel and sound annoying! The shaky keys sound like rattlers when you type

fast. The layout of the keys is somewhat different from the layout of my previous HP laptop so with this laptop

I get a lot of typos. Lots of work!

5. Intel i7-3610QM 5 Stars. I am not a gamer so I can't really test the speed. CNET recommended getting only Intel i5 for

students who will not play games but will only do school work and online research but I wanted the i7 so I got it.

It's really of no use me at the moment.

6. Beats Sound 5 Stars. I love the sound of this laptop. Compared to my previous laptops (HP, ASUS, Acer, & Toshiba yes I

have been a laptop user since birth. I have never experienced using a desktop), this is the one that has the best sound.

7. Simple Pass 4 Stars. It is convenient because I don't have to type in my password all the time. However, this feature has

failed several times already.

8. Touch Pad 4 Stars . It is not as simple to use as my previous laptops.

9. Blue Ray Player & Super Multi DVD Burner 5 Stars. Very fast, efficient and flexible.

10. Windows 7 5 Stars for now. I try windows 8 later when I get the time then I will compare. When I got this I really did a lot

research on the 2 but I got discouraged by the reviews on Windows 8. I know I can crack it but I am so busy that

I decided not to spend time on that, but I will soon.

Overall, I love this laptop. It's very functional, very fast and really serves me right. For students, listen to what CNET recommends. You don't really need a very strong processor. An Intel i5 would be just fine for you. You need not spend more than $700 on a laptop just for doing school work. I'd say go for the $450 $650 range. The ones sold at Costco are just fine. Now between Windows 7 and Windows 8? Hmmmm. . . . .if you have a lot of time to spend learning windows 8 then go for it.

it was made out of some plastic material, they probably made it lightweight, and unless your going to join the military it is

Received my X301 2 weeks ago from Electronica Direct and I would like to thank them for the excellent prompt service, This product is 2776-P6U it has all the above mentioned specs + AT&T wireless WWAN HSDPA 7.2 + GPS once you put your hand on the X301 you will notice that built quality is superior to the current T series meanwhile the reason why I'm rating this product 3 stars only is because of the keyboard its just awful!!! It flexes excessively specially the left side just like a cheap notebook! from what I came to know Lenovo implemented a new keyboard design that caused the problem I have contacted Lenovo with the matter and they informed me that they will look into it and I'm still waiting! The main reason I always buy ThinkPad's is the legendary IBM keyboard and now it's gone! I'm very disappointed with my X301 and I don't recommend it!

I am 90% happy with this laptop. It is very light and very portable. Mine came with Windows XP pre-installed and a set of Vista 'restore' disks. These didn't work (I called Lenovo support and their suggestion was to wipe the hard-drive and start again, which I did but that made no difference) so I had to install my own copy of Vista. It then took 2 days to download all the updates to my copy of Vista and all the X301 drivers.

However, now it is up and running, it works very well. You can notice the benefit of low access-time of an SSD, particularly when it comes to tasks such as browsing picture thumbnails. It boots pretty quickly too. I would point out a few things gripes worth knowing though..

The battery-life is listed in the specs as up-to 5.5 hours. In my experience that is really around 3.5 hours.

The processor is a little under-powered and this can show itself in video playback.

The fingerprint scanner doesn't seem to work half the time (but who cares?).

That all sounds a bit negative, but on the whole I am impressed. If I had my money back I would buy an X301 again!

I am currently on my 8th or 9th ThinkPad since IBM debuted the ThinkPad Iine in 1992 and continue to prefer the overall quality, portability, screen resolution, utility and look of the X series laptops.

My current 13" ThinkPad X301 with an SSD is ultra-slim, weighs 3.2lbs., has clean simple lines, and is appropriate for business meetings. With the Enhanced Experience (EE), these laptops are also much quicker at boot-up and in processing when multi-tasking. Of all the laptops I have tried, I prefer not only the keyboard and overall ergonomics of the ThinkPads, but the balance, solid construction and feel.

I dock it to a 24" monitor and wireless keyboard when at home, and will sometimes carry a simple bookstand and wireless travel keyboard when working on a lot of spreadsheets, PPT presentations or word processing. This way, I can open the ThinkPad all the way, place it in the bookstand, and have the screen at eye level. It is thin and light enough to do this.

The solid state duo core processor makes for a quick boot-up and multi-tasking. Have owned the X301 for over 2 years and have not had any issues with it. I do run a good utility program to keep it running smoothly.

For business purposes, the simple lines of the matte black carbonite case makes for a durable travel laptop with a solid construction that is not distracting in presentations (think Alienware).

Visually and tactically, I do prefer the matte black and design of the X-series ThinkPads.

I waited long for this computer since ive ever used lenovo, but for me this was a GREAT disappointment. the ,machine frezzes all the time, is very slow, the memory after installing windows is nothing! (15GB left) and the batery seem to last shorter than promised.

i reached a point that im looking for other options since its imposible to keep this toy.

if i can find a strenght is the size, look and feel, which migh have brought a lot of sales but nothing else.....

I've been using an old Toshiba laptop for a long time, and it was time I upgraded. I'll start with what I was looking for: a powerful gaming laptop that I could still use for school. I certainly got what I asked for.

It's positives are obvious at the very start. Its i5 processor and 4gb of ram make it lightning fast, this is in comparison to my friend's desktop that has several thousand dollars piled into it. I tested a multitude of games on it, Mass Effect 2 ran without a hitch at max settings, Left4Dead2 runs at max, even Starcraft2 on Ultra settings ran cleanly when playing normally (note custom maps are a different story, and if you've ever played a custom you know what I mean...). This of course is only possible because of the lower resolution. Since it's not at full 1080p, it can handle the amount of graphic intensity of high settings. In all honesty I love full hd, and am quite used to it, but the sacrifice of resolution for quality was well worth it. I can easily run any program without any issues, word, photoshop, et. Often enough I'll have a few things running and play starcraft2 at the same time without any slow down, which says a lot. All three ran without any frame rate issues. In terms of the actual look of the laptop, it's sleek and clean, it had no scratches or dings, and everything was intact. the keyboard and the wrist rests are textured, which I really like because it gives me some feeling to when I'm typing et. The extra touch buttons that allow you to turbo boost the cpu (possible since it's an i5) and turn the touchpad on and off are very helpful when you already have a mouse. The size of this laptop allows for a numpad, which I absolutely love because I HATE typing with the 10 button numbers. Also, the fact the keyboard has back light is quite nice in a dark environment. The webcam is good quality as well. For a refurb (after hearing the horror stories), mine is in perfect condition.

Now the negatives do exist, this laptop isn't perfect. The chiclet keyboard might be an issue for some, I know it's not much for me but since I'm so used to the responsiveness of a normal keyboard I have to adjust to the change. The speakers are a little low on volume, but all you have to change is the volume equalizer to on in Creative's audio driver. The laptop itself didn't come as I expected, it's black with a small streak of silver instead of the blue. I actually wanted blue as it matches my mouse and I love the color but why be picky, it still looks good. When the laptop came I had some fears instilled in me thanks to my paranoid friend, who told me that some refurbs come with no charger or battery, but I got this from Amazon and my fears were just that. However, even if it came with the charger and battery, what you do not get is the driver dvd, or a Windows disc. Now, this isn't too much of a problem as you can download all the drivers, but if you don't have a Windows disc redoing the system is impossible. Your Windows key is on the bottom of the laptop, but it's useless without the install disc. This issue became relevant as I redid the system because I didn't need or want the extra things installed on it (like roxio burn or some crappy antivirus trial et.). The only actual problem that I have with this laptop is the top edges of the laptop wrap around the screen for a few pixels... thought it was strange design, but it's not noticeable after a day.

As for the other negative reviews that I read, they're a bit dumb. The shipping speed is explained when you buy it, they have to build the computer before they send it. The fan is NOT loud, if you're not playing a graphic intensive game there's virtually no noise at all. When you are, the fan does make a bit of noise but seeing as this laptop is built for power it needs to get rid of the heat, but even then it's easily ignorable.

Ignore the shipping speed issues, it's a refurb they have to build the computer before they send it hence the "usually ships from 2-3 weeks". Also, who complains about the weight of the laptop when they have it listed under specifications? These complaints wouldn't exist if people could read.

Overall, this laptop is one badass puppy for the price (I mean cmon, $800 for a top quality gaming laptop?!?! Other $800 laptops are crap in comparison.). For what it is, I give it a 4.5. It's powerful, practical, and looks good. Well worth the price.

I bought this lap top after a VERY long search online for the best computer for how much I was willing to spend. My budget was $850, and I was willing to buy either a laptop OR a desktop. I wanted something that was portable because I play games at my friends house's all the time. I also wanted something that can play the games I like to play

I have been able to play all these games on ALL HIGH SETTINGS. I get about 45-60 Fps while playing. Even during intense battles where I'm really using the GPU and CPU pretty harshly, It plays cool, and still maintains AT LEAST 45 fps.

Pros VERY good buy, it is the best laptop for this price. I have been looking for a LONG time for something that had a least a tri core CPU running at least 2.2ghz, and a dedicated graphics with at least 512mb dedicated to the GPU. After benchmarking the parts inside this laptop I found that the GPU(graphics processing unit) was in the top tier. There are 3 tiers, tier 1 is the best out there were tier 3 is low end crappy. The CPU, and GPU both scored well on the benchmarks in tier 1. Other people have said that they want more FPS(frames Per Second) out of this laptop. The only way for that to happen is for it to have 2 graphics cards. believe me, 60fps is good, and that's about the most you will get with almost ALL single graphics cards. the processor is very good as well. Its a duel core, running 2.27ghz, but can easily be overclocked to 2.54ghz from inside windows. Asus made a program that you can launch from within windows that makes it easy to overclock your CPU, just as easy as setting the battery to high performance. The other thing is that the CPU also has 4 threads, witch makes it run like a quad core, ex. That's like partitioning your hard drive into 4 partitions! its one hard drive but you have 4 storage areas now. It is a true LED wide screen display, so the rez might not be 1080p but it still looks GREAT. The key board is a chiclet style, all that means is that they buttons are a little smaller and have more space in between them. If you have ever used a mac book pro, its just like that. NOT HARD to get used to at all. within minutes I was typing at normal speeds with it. 4g's of DDR3(GOOD, but can be upgrade to 8g's, witch is GREAT). Hard drive isn't bad, 7200rpm means quick launching and WAY less time in loading screens, plus 500gb of storage isn't bad either. would like 1t but ehhh, now I'm just being picky. (cough) 500gb SSHD/Flash Storage would be nice (cough). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I already know that would jack up the price a grand or two though. . . . any way

CONS HEAT. . . This thing tends to get a little hot while playing these games with all HIGH setting. I invested $32. on a laptop cooling tray. BELIEVE me, it is worth the investment. It keeps the laptop from overheating and the one i got sits it at an angle witch makes it just that much easier to use. BUY a MICROFIBER CLOTH rag, this thing doesn't attract much dust but the oil from your hands and fingers dose stand out and creates smudges. Plus its always good to keep your com clean ;)

other then that this thing has had NO PROBLEMS, Ive had it for 1month and a week. so far so good. not to much bloat ware, wasn't damaged at all when it arrived and runs like a CHAMP. It replaced my desktop as my main computer and like I said is the BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. I looked at Newegg.com for the same laptop, and a few other places, It cost a little more els where, and the ones they had were NOT factory refurbished. Believe me that is a big enough deal, You don't want something sent back to the retailer who just wants it sold. the factory/company that sells it will take the time to make sure that it is fully functional and is LIKE new, they will even replace parts with BRAND NEW ones because they already have them.

In short. . best laptop at this price. really good CPU/GPU. Runs like a Champ. CAN replace your desktop. HEATS up, buy a cooling tray. you will not be disappointed with your purchase.

I have owned my ASUS G60 for about 10 months, prior to that I owned the previous model (G51) for several months. Overall, my experience has been mostly positive and I would strongly recommend ASUS gaming notebooks for their great features and tremendous value.

What I use this computer for:

I have used this particular notebook for as a complete desktop replacement system, it is my one and only PC. I do some moderate gaming, namely Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare II. Additionally, I do a bit of light video editing and audio production (Adobe Premier Elements, Adobe Audition) along with day-to-day internet browsing and word processing. For my purposes, most folks would agree the specs are total overkill but when I feel like playing a new PC game I don't want to have to suffer. The system is a power hog, so don't expect record-breaking battery life (2-3 hours with some power using features disabled, 45 minutes on full blast.) Also, the monitor's max resolution is a little low (1366 x 768) given the size of the screen (16" widescreen.) Below I'll break down some of the pros and cons.

Some of my favorite things about this system:

The case is extremely sturdy and has a very substantial feel on the desk. The keyboard feels like a real desktop keyboard and doesn't cause the screen or case to shake or flop around on your desk when you type heavily. This is a huge plus for me, given that I use this as a desktop computer.

The keyboard is backlit with several brightness settings, adjustable using the function keys.

The screen is extremely bright and crisp on its highest lamp setting, but you can also adjust the screen brightness quickly using the function keys. This is a great feature for both battery life and avoiding eye strain.

The video card offers HDMI output to a television or monitor. It also has VGA for older analog monitors and automatically switches to dual monitor output when either port is used.

There is a large heat sink with side case exhaust (not on the underside of the case) which eliminates the need for a laptop cooling pad for most users.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M 1GB graphics card is in fact a discrete, PCI-Express graphics card (x16 bus speed) not an "integrated" or "on-board" graphics card. This, of course, is the prime selling point for any laptop marketed as a "gaming machine."

The Ethernet port is on the back of the machine (thank goodness!) as is the power cord input.

Some of my least favorite things about this system:

There are 4 USB 2.0 ports, two located on each side of the case proximal to the user. For right handed users, this means that your USB ports will get directly in the way of your mouse hand if you are using an external mouse (and of course you would be considering this is a gaming laptop) Bad case design, ASUS!

The audio jacks are located (of course) on the right side of the case, proximal to the user. So, if you plug in your headset/mic you'll be cluttering your mouse pad with unruly wires which conveniently get in the way of everything. Bad case design, ASUS!

The audio jacks are *very* poorly constructed. The headphone jack microswitch is extremely likely to become "stuck" rendering your built-in speakers useless (more on this below.)

Major issues/complaints:

I only have one major issue or complaint with this laptop (and all the other ASUS laptops for that matter, since this issue is not limited to just this model.) The headphone jack microswitch has a strong tendency to become "stuck." What I mean by this is that when you plug in headphones or external speakers to the headphone jack, two pins (the microswitch) are suppressed which tell the motherboard to direct sound into the device you've plugged in. When you remove the headphone/speakers, the two pins should "pop" back out to an unsuppressed position which tell the motherboard to direct sound to the laptop's built in speakers. In this ASUS model (and most other ASUS models) this microswitch is faulty and easily damaged. In other words, when you unplug your headphones/speakers the switch remains suppressed and the built-in speakers never get "told" to turn back on. The end result: you have to use headphones or external speakers to hear any sound. This is a common, widespread and known defect with the Realtek on-board sound card in these systems and cannot be easily fixed or replaced, since a full motherboard replacement would be needed. So, it's something you should just be prepared to live with. Overall, it's merely a nuisance and not a terribly debilitating defect.

Summary and Rating:

To wrap things up, this is a great mid-range gaming system at a great price. You get a high end graphics card, a great sturdy case with a bright screen and some great little features. There are some cons with the layout of ports and such, and of course, that unruly headphone jack. But overall, I think you'd be quite pleased with the performance vs. price of this system.

The machine is great. Big screen, really good to either play videogames trough the HDMI Cable or watch movies. The configurations provide a excellent gameplay, all the games I tried worked perfectly and this is very important. The battery don't last too long, but I already was aware of this and I always carry the charger, so this is not a problem for me.

I only have a little problem, that is sometimes when I unplug the charger the computer freeze and I need to turn off and start everything again, and I lost school work because of this. But Overall is a great computer and for me, it worth the price.

I'm a college student and this computer allows me to work fast and yet still enjoy games. Battery life is okay with me, but i plan on getting a 9 cell for it. The graphics card is great. I can edit movies and pictures at great speeds. my old laptop used to try and keep up with me, but now i can barely keep up with this baby. 4 gigs of ram allows me to run many programs at once and i haven't seen any lag or slowing. Great hard drive space and speed 7200 rmp. I was able to dual-boot windows 7 and ubuntu. WOrks excellent with ubuntu after you install the graphics driver which are available at Nvidia. Overall i am happy with this purchase. I got a great product for a Awesome Price. One of the most confusing things though was that it has a bluetooth led that lights up in ubuntu even though it physically doesn't have bluetooth built it.

First of all, Amazon shipped me a ThinkCenter desktop! Needless to say I was quite annoyed. After dealing with their customer service, I promptly received a return label for it, and the laptop was shipped with 2-day shipping. This was a Thursday after noon, and I didn't receive the thing until Tuesday the next week. First time I've had an incorrect shipment from Amazon since I've been shopping with them for the last 6-7 years. Well on to the review. At $600 for a ThinkPad with Windows 7 Pro it's a damn good deal. I bought this for my wife for use at home. I removed some of the bloatware that came with it and installed MS Security Essentials. The power saver feature is great! I can supposedly get 4+ hrs out of the battery (based on the estimate on the battery indicator) although I've never used it for longer than an hour off the plug. I don't know if it's a Win7 feature, but if you mouse over minimized windows it shows a small pop-up of the window. I love that, since we tend to have a few windows open at a time. Boot up time is ok I've not timed it, but it feels like 60-90 seconds. I tend to Hibernate it most of the time. From hibernation, it starts up in less than 30 seconds. The build seems sturdy enough and compares ok with the last ThinkPad I used about 12 years ago. There is no latch to close the screen though. On the screen depending on how you hold the machine, the screen tends to swing backward on its weight. It is unable to support it self at certain angles. This is not a problem (yet). I hope it doesn't become more free though! The screen is glossy, but I don't have too much glare issues indoors. I haven't tried it outside, or in brightly lit areas. I received the unit with only a DVD burner drive. I need to see if that drive can be swapped for a blu-ray drive, as the unit has an HDMI output which is of no use unless I stream or download high def from the web is like never. The 14" screen is just barely ample. I did not want the SL510 withthe 15" screen as it would've been too heavy for the purpose. The screen is actually pretty short vertically which annoys me since you have to scroll alot more to see more of a page. I personally prefer the ~4:3 aspect ratio (1280x1024?)of the older laptops. But all laptops are coming "widescreen" now so complaining about that is a waste of time. As far as performance goes, I haven't installed any other applications on it (besides Firefox) as yet. However, I don't foresee any issues. It only comes with 2GB of RAM but that should be sufficient for the use intended, and can supposedly be expanded to 8GB if needed. We don't do pc gaming so I couldn't tell you about that. Wireless works fine around the house. All in all, so far I am very pleased.

Got mine from friend, he has upgraded it to 3gb of ram and i am sure that does make a bit of difference performance wise. Very sturdy work laptop i carry in a backpack without any protective cover almost everyday everywhere, harddrive has not failed yet even though the laptop suffers shaking from me running and general school bag handling... dropped it twice so far nothing broke. (the height of drop from the chair that it fell twice from due to me tripping on power cord is approx 2.5 ft. My sound card messed up in less than 6 moth. I had to restore whole laptop to its factory defaults twice in less than a year. To be exact 9 month.

Despite having good specs, performance is just more than disappointing.

Sorry my French, but I'll never buy Lenovo crap any more.

Would have given this computer 5 stars but I had to send my first one back because of WiFi issues. It seems there is a know WiFi issue. I don't know if it's affecting all brands of computers with the Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 adapter or just Lenovo. After reading other reviews on Lenovo computers I was worried that I would have the same issue as I had with the first Z400 Touch. The 2nd arrived yesterday and it is working perfectly. The hardest part of the setup was finding an unused email address for hotmail which you need for the Win8 Store, alot like a Gmail account for Android. I have a model only sold online from the Lenovo store with the only difference is that mine has 8 Gigs of RAM and a 1600X900 Display. This unit is is super fast with all the power I need. The processor is a full power I5 not like most laptops that sacrifice processing speed to extend battery life by using low voltage processors. The unit is well built and has a solid feel. There is some flex in the keyboard but from my experience every chicklet style keyboard I've used has about the same amount of flex. My guess would be to cut down on the thickness of the unit something had to give but typing is not an issue. I read some reviews where people feel the trackpad is touchy and feels "cheap", whatever that means, which I have to disagree to both. I am very happy with the computer since I got the replacement.

Another downside is it is a sealed unit which is becoming very common with the thinner notebooks and ultrabooks so I didn't take a star away for that. This means that computer has to be taken in to a service center to have the battery replaced.

Another negative and I mean a big negative is dealing with Lenovo Customer DisService, which you will have to do if you buy from their online store. From ship dates being changed 4 times in 4 days to being transferred from person to person who couldn't help you only to escalate it to someone who wouldn't call you back as promised. If you do have a WiFi issue where the adapter doesn't see a network or a very weak network and has connection issues return the computer for replacement. It is a hardware issue not software. Don't waste your time with Tech Support they can't fix it. You'll just get frustrated and have to return it anyway. It took me about 20 hours on the phone with Lenovo until I got a great rep who took charge of my problem and I had my replacement to me in 3 business days instead of the weeks others were telling me. Buy it from Amazon who does have excellent customer service, shameless plug, and deal with a great company. STAY AWAY FROM THE ONLINE STORE.

All in all it's a great computer if you don't have to deal with Lenovo Customer DisService.

I bought this product off of the manufacturer's website(they had a sale for it) and I love it. I needed a new, everyday laptop and so far this is perfect. It is fast, the touch screen is really cool, and it is easy to use. It comes with Windows 8, which I know a lot of people don't like, but it can actually make things really easy once you get used to it. I do have a few issues with the product, but none of them are deal breakers:

1. Outer case easily picks up finger prints, and requires a solution to get rid of them(I used a cloth and hand sanitizer, which you can use for the touchscreen, too)

2. Keyboard is kind of awkward for me. I have small hands and I still end up typing on the wrong row of keys randomly. My last laptop was a behemoth and had a keyboard to match it. I will just have to get used to it.

3. The keyboard kind of bows in when I type, which is strange.

4. The key you can use to close programs is between the refresh and increase volume buttons--which is annoying.

5. The case, in my opinion, doesn't look "dark chocolate" at all. It just looks plain black. Maybe I need to get it in the sunlight or look at dark chocolate again?

Overall, I love this laptop and am very happy with the buy. We will see if this continues to be the case in the coming years.

I have owned 5 or 6 laptops and this is my favorite so far. I bought the i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, with Win 8 touch screen. Some have complained about Win 8, but then every new Windows version has had detractors. I'm OK with it.

The speed is great, the look is sleek, and the fan is quiet. I saw one review comparing it to a "free weight" because it weighs 4 1/2 pounds. If that is too heavy for you then you might have other issues you need to address first. It isn't a tablet, but it has multiple ports and an optical drive that I need. The keyboard does flex a bit when typing, but it doesn't feel cheap or fragile. The screen is bright and clear and at $ 760, the price was the best value machine I found.

Two criticisms that I found valid: The battery does not snap out for removal or replacement. My last laptop had a battery go bad and would not boot with it installed. I removed it & was able to use the laptop (plugged in) until it was replaced. The Lenovo would not allow that. Also, the outside case attracts fingerprints like crazy. I read this in other reviews and thought it was no big deal. It is. Mine always looks like a 4 yr old was playing with it while eating fried chicken. Even with clean, dry hands it smudges. I contacted Lenovo to see if they had a product (wax, etc.) to reduce this & was told they have no reported issue. They should read the reviews. Also, the mouse/touchpad is a bit squirrely but I have no problems or issues with the wifi reception.

All in all, I like the machine and would strongly consider Lenovo for future purchases.

I was unable to move but a few feet away with laptop without losing internet connection due to a weak wireless signal. Trouble is not with my router as I can use my Acer laptop outside of my house and still have a strong signal same with with my iPad and cell phones. Called Levono and they were unable to help. So I will be returning.

I have since seen other complaints on the Levono's forums in regards to networking issues. Too bad, I really liked this laptop.

If you are unable to connect to the internet, you can fix it yourself as oppose to customer support. Use the above link on another computer. Save the download onto a flash drive. Insert into the lenovo and run. My internet is up and running now! Just needed the driver.

How to close a program: The X between volume increase and the refresh button at the top. (I learned this from a previous review--THANK YOU for the tip!!!)

I don't have a true opinion yet. But, I very much like the touch screen. I agree that the keyboard isn't the best but I think I can get use to it.

I bought this laptop for my wife's Christmas present on the day after Black Friday from Fry's online. The price was $299.00 and the laptop is built solidly. It seems plenty quick to me and when I offered to upgrade to 8GB ram from the 3GB it came with, my wife said not to bother (even though it is less than $30.00 for the ram.) We have not noticed any delay in using the mouse cursor as reported in another review here. We are extremely happy with this laptop although it is still very new and hasn't stood the test of time yet.

First, it is dual core and it is very sluggish for being i3. The Touchpad is good but not the mouse clicker. It takes a while(a couple of seconds) sometimes to get response from the program. When I compare this laptop with a two year old AMD Toshiba, Toshiba wins. Don't expect a fast laptop. This laptop is worth $280 and if you need something for email or just light office work it will do.

Someone else posted that he could upgrade the memory to 8GB for $30, Only a moron would believe that. For memory installation you have to open the whole laptop and it takes at least half an hour. Best buy charges $70 for just installation. This is not including the cost of the memory chips which you can look up and see for yourself.

OK, got the DV6-1245 at the end of the year. I ended up getting the REFURB'd unit since I have always had lots of luck. Anyway, the unit arrived fast and in a standard sealed HP box. the unit was factory fresh, not a fingerprint on it! All accessories and docs were included. And like many laptops in the second half of 2009, it included a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows-7. I went to the web, entered the shipping info and then, free of charge, a CD came in the mail in a week. Installed Win-7 using the docs and disk provided and viola'... Windows-7 spcifically built for this laptop was running!

As for the unit, nice. The screen is a big 16-inch one, with their brightviuew technology. Some people describe this as a 'glossy' screen, but the reasons have more to do with color rendition, rather than aesthetics. In fact a color photo displayed ona 'glossy' screen is hands-down a much more vivid picture than anything possible on a Matte finish screen. User preference here, but for my money, I would ONLY buy the new 'glossy' style screen for ANY monitor.

The machine is quiet and fast. Standard Intel T6500 dual core CPU, it runs great. Several similiar models include the AMD TF20 or M300 chips, but I wanted an Intel version. This one is a great balance betwen COST and SPEED. Yes, there are faster CPUs, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Unit comes with a 12-cell battery and is great for long-life. Usually this 12-cell is the battery that you have to buy later, for $125 or so, but this unit COMES WITH IT!!! (Yes, I went out and purchased a 6-cell unit for $50 to make this laptop a bit thinner when needed, and now I have BOTH!)

Webcam? Yes, and they throw in the unique Media Manager which can substitute elements of the video stream in real-time, based on your face. So, I can stream what looks like Abraham Lincoln or a Sock-puppet talking (and following my REAL face expressions) when I am on Skype or similiar!

Comes with standard apps installed.

Worth it! Get it! 'Nuff said!

So far so good. Bought this after a horrible experience with a brand new Toshiba. So far I like it. Good keyboard, beautiful screen. It's a little heavier than I'd hoped (the Toshiba with same screen was at least a pound lighter) but the sound quality on this model is killer. Best laptop sound I've ever run across. This is my first Dell; if it works out it won't be my last. Oh, the fan is a little noisy, but I suspect all these high powered machines run hot.

I am not a big fan of Dell. I am a macbook fan. But I really loved this laptop. I have been using this for over 4months now. I really liked this new line of Inspirons that dell started. I wasnt a big fan of the older inspirons.

Pros:

-very good configuration for that price.

-i got it for 730, after a few days it went down to 699. So current price(799) is a little high for it, and if you wait or try elsewhere you can get it for less.

-awesome display quality obviously because it is HD.

-too good audio quality. it is the best, and for those who need higher volume. Yes, this one gives higher volume too.

-very sturdy compared to the older inspirons, i really loved the design and sturdiness of it.

-very good placement of three usb ports(left,back,right), and has a card reader along with HDMI, vga display. it just has everything you might ever need.

-very good ventilation compared to any other laptop I have ever seen. It does not need another laptop cooler, it has just got enough fans and ventilators to maintain temperature.

Cons(not many):

-I thought this particular config had bluetooth also. either i misunderstood or amazon changed the description later. Anyway, it does NOT have bluetooth.

-ventilation and cooling is awesome, but it does make some sound which some might not like. im fine with it. its not much for me.

-usb placement is fine for me, but for some who might use portable hard drives and connect one to more than one usb ports for additional power to the drive. the placement is not very friendly for such purposes as the usb connector cable might not be that long for your device if it needs two ports.

The Dell Inspiron i17R-2248MRB turned out to be an excellent value. It's a pretty fast laptop with the i5 processor, its one bottleneck might be its on board video. The laptop scored in the Windows Experience Processor 6.7, RAM 5.9, Graphics 4.6, Gaming Graphics 5.3, and Primary hard drive a 5.8 , the keyboard layout is excellent and as an accounting student having a numeric keypad is a must for entering numbers into excel quickly. Although I don't like the awkward key combinations needed to use function keys, they require using the Fn key... I have seen the same awkward key combinations on HP laptops so its not a Dell problem. Every once in a while the laptop will freeze up and then continue to function normally. I read many people have experienced the same problem and it seems the particular hard drive used in this laptop might be to blame. I plan on replacing it with a 7200rmp WD black scorpio after the semester is over. Those HDs are pretty fast and inexpensive. The value is excellent and even better now. I have seen the price of this laptop drop by a hundred dollars at a popular office supply chain making it perhaps one of the best values for a 17.3" laptop with an i5 2.53ghz (2.8ghz turbo) processor with x64 Win 7 with subwoofer and eSata. The glossy design and polished aluminium is very attractive but its a fingerprint magnet. Battery life is less than 3 hours. Laptop doesn't become very hot like some others

I had a older Dell computer so found this one on Amazon with a larger screen and it was a good price and ordered it. It arrived in about 2 days, was very easy to set up. It's a little different using Windows 7 but I really like it. I did have to buy a new computer as my old Dell printer was not compatible with Windows 7, but that was easy enough getting one for under $80.00 that does everything I need. I was really pleasantly surprised to plug in my Canon camera and it downloaded the pictures quickly without installation of software, and actually erased the pictures on my camera after asking.

I'm enjoying the web cam and talking with my son who lives in New York. I'm not the most computer wise person there is, but this computer makes it easy to get around and do the things I like. It is very fast, and this is one thing I was really hoping for as my older Dell's processor was getting slower. Amazon is a great place to order electronics, and I bought the extended warranty through Square Trade which proved much less expensive than if I had brought it through Dell.

This new laptop replaces a Toshiba A15-S127 that we bought 3 months ago and one that died 4 weeks later when the LCD screen cracked. This one still confuses my wife and me given that the thing spent most of its time in its carry case and it bore absolutely no external damage on the laptop's shell. To add insult to injury the store we bought it from wanted to charge us literally 2/3rds the cost of the thing to repair it, manufacturer's warranty be dammed, I guess. Suffice it to say that we won't be buying Toshiba products again nor shopping at this store (who's name, by the way, rhymes with Stomp Youse Say), ever again. I would have reviewed the S127, but what's the point? We hardly had it long enough to get to know it.

When Sony began producing computers, I was less than impressed. Yet another big name producing very shiny products that look great while using second rate parts that deliver underwhelming performance. That was several years ago and while I still don't care for big name brand PCs, they are still good machines. Even though I build my PCs from parts I choose, I can't build a lap top, and after the Toshiba debacle, anything would have been an improvement. Truth to tell, I didn't really like the Toshiba from the start, but my wife wanted something cheap to take to work and use it to learn Spanish, practice her mathematics and watch the occasional movie, and the Toshiba did a fair job at all of those things. The Sony PCG-505DX is a vast improvement in every category, though it was twice the price.

The 505 features a 1.5 Ghz Pentium 4 Centrino processorpossibly the most important consideration when buying a laptop these days. The CPU scales its speed and processing ability to conserve power and extend the usability of the lap top. With the full charge the 505 will run for nearly 5 hours when doing things like word processing. Obviously, the more things you do, the shorter the battery life will be. The Vaio also sports a whopping 512 mb of RAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 16 mb of its own RAM, (a lot of laptops video RAM is actually shared with system RAM and performance takes a real hit), a 400 Mhz FSB, an 11 mb IEEE 802.11b `Wi-fi' wireless network adapter, 1 PC-MCIA slot, 2 USB + 1 IEEE 1394 FireWire ports, CD-RW & DVD player combo drive, Network and modem ports, VGA port, and a Sony memory stick slot. All of this is packed into a very small and very attractive box,. The casing also has a lot of polished aluminum, which will no doubt enhance the durability and life of the computer.

Though the S127 was fully 600 Mhz faster, the 505 out performs it every categoryit boots faster, loads programs faster, and came with much better software pre-installed. I actually plan to keep all of Sony's own music and video programs, which is odd as I usually spend the first day or so with any laptop I have owned blowing out all the junk and promotional software that comes with them. About the only things I removed was AOL and that really terrible office package known as Microsoft Works. Everything else will stay. Sony also wisely partitioned the 60 Gb hard drive to make mirroring the drive much easier. (What they didn't include was a system restore CD or DVD and instead require you to make your own. If you want to do this, make sure your have a stack of CD-Rs handy, because it will take 9 of them).

The 505 is actually pretty much the same size as my old 486 Compaq Aero, which itself was a dynamite little machine. I love the Vaio's design and feelit's sturdy, incredibly well made and given the luck we have had with our other Sony products, I suspect this little beauty will be around for a long time. About the only real complaints I have about it is the speakers sound terrible, but then again, this is a laptop and a general gripe about laptop keyboards in generalI just can't get comfortable with any of them. This is the best laptop I have ever owned in both performance and build quality. The screen image quality is great, the keys and controls intuitive, I only wish we had bought this first instead of the Toshiba.

This is one of the best laptops I worked on. Though many people think 12.1" screen is smaller, I do not think so, it gives you an 1024x768 resolution which is very good, unless you are expecting your laptop to be a TV replacement to watch movies. I am a student and use my laptop for heavy software development and I never faced any problem with the CPU performance. Till now my experience with this new centrino processor is awesome. As for the battery life issues, it cant be better than this. Though compared to the other centrino machines this machine is bit expensive, but I pay for the style and brand and the quality of the product. Its been 3 weeks since I bought this notebook, and I never repented for paying the extra buck..

AS for the other side,You have to make your own recovery CD's, which is very important step before you do anything with the laptop.. And I could not upgrade to windows XP professional, it gave me some virtual memory low message and kept on restarting after the installation was done, So I had to do complete installation of XP Pro. If the XP pro upgrade is not successful for you also, do not worry. You can put the recovery CD 1 and get all the software installed back on the clean XP professional. So there is a way around to keep the software which came with the machine and have XP pro.. And I am little disappointed SONY did not provide us with a third party CD writer software, we are forced to use the inbuilt XP writer, which is slow compared to NERO cd burner software or Roxio easy cd creator.. Overall you will get the value for your money..

And I do not understand why Amazon display's different specification on this website than what we see on sony. My laptop has an L2 cache of 1MB, but amazon displays here it as 512 KB which is very confusing. I didnt buy my notebook on Amazon becoz of that confusion..

I've had the sony PCG-V505DX for more than 2 years and overall, I've been satisfied with it. What I like the most are the keyboard, the sleek feel of the computer, and its weight. It's a pleasure typing on it. The design is great and it's light enough to carry around.

My only negative experience, unfortunately, was a near-catastrophic one. After about 8 months, it stopped working. It wouldn't even boot up. I called Sony's tech support and they were no help. In fact, their suggestion that I ship it in and they would reformat everything was less than helpful since saving my data was of utmost importance. Fortunately, I took it to a local shop and the guy fixed it in a day without any loss of data. Also, the warranty covered the repairs. However, the experience left me with little confidence in Sony's quality control and no confidence in their tech support.

All in all, the computer is a pleasure to use. However, the fact that the computer wouldn't even start up after just 8 months has convinced me that my next purchase will be of a company with a better reputation for reliability.

The laptop is sleek, sexy, and is ergonomic enough, but apparently, there is a reliability issue. Mine stopped booting up after 18 months of normal use. I don't leave it running hot, I use that Targus cooling pad with a USB-powered fan.

It was definitely not an LCD issue. The repair technician recommended that I replace the motherboard and/or CPU, but was unable to fix it otherwise.

I found this 66-page thread too late... but it's enough to keep me away from purchasing another Vaio to replace this broken one:

Wow. I'm also surprised at all the negative reviews. Maybe I just got lucky, but this laptop has done everything I expected it to. Keep in mind that I've had it since March of this year... so that's a good 9 months of use. It's perfect for my school assignments. It runs things I need like MS Visual Studio just fine. And I can bring it to school without the power cord, knowing that I will have enough power to last me several hours.

I even played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and City of Heroes on it over the summer break. For CoH, I had to kind of tweak the video card a bit... but that appears to be a known issue with customized laptop video cards (Mobility Radeons, to be precise).

Overall... I love this laptop.

I have had it less than a week. I have to confess I am a Gateway fan, there are not many of us left. Last year I bought a Samsung on one of Amazon's daily specials, hate it. It is so slow in opening a browser and once open it continues to be slow, hate it! So this would be my 7th Gateway between desktops and laptops in the last 20 years. When I purchased this one for an older Gateway that is fading I was concerned about 2 things the speed and well Gateway, being it was sold or merged and basically has few offerings anymore. I know nothing about processors and tried to read up on them a little and tried to compare them with other laptop offerings, but frankly I didn't know what I was doing, I just took a chance. It flies, even Explorer seems faster (not a typo) so that part has worked out. One thing I have always liked about Gateway is the touchpad pointing device. In shopping at stores I noticed most laptops now don't let you scroll with the one finger on the right side. This is just a conditioning thing, I have always liked it and this laptop has it and the option of using the 2 finger in the center of the touchpad. It has Windows 8, more cumbersome but not a problem. I didn't give it a 5 simply because I haven't had it long enough. I have to tell you it is very confusing buying a computer that's why I went with Gateway. I bought a ASUS a few years ago and didn't like him so I took a chance with one of my old reliable's.

Review of Sony VAIO T Series SVT15114CXS 15.5-Inch Core i5 Touch Ultrabook

I am a software developer and was looking for a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop on which to do some Windows 8 development. I was additionally looking to replace my Asus UL30VT as my occasional travel laptop. I am an amateur photographer, so I also wanted something with a nice screen that could do at least full HD at 1920 x 1080. This last consideration narrowed the field quite a bit.

After comparing many models and finally ordering and receiving this Sony I can state that I couldn't be happier. This is such a beautiful machine and such an incredible value for the price. While Windows 8 is still growing on me, the machine itself is wonderful. First off, is the screen. Text and photos look gorgeous. There is no substitute for pixel density when rendering text and this machine renders text and web pages beautifully. I loaded up my Nikon photo software to review a number of photos from my D90 and they looked wonderful. I held out for a 1080p screen because I also like to watch movies. I loaded up Windows Media Player Home Cinema edition and threw a 1080p MKV at it, which it rendered wonderfully using only about 20% CPU during the busy action scenes with the Intel video chipset. This had been a point of potential concern for me since there isn't a discrete graphics card in the machine.

The sound is just okay, as is generally the case for a laptop. Certainly acceptable for watching a movie and general use although I wouldn't want to try to rock out to them. I could have done without the DVD drive, but as an old school programmer and PC user I appreciate having it and am creating system recovery DVD's as I write this. The variety of ports is also appreciated. Having a GigE ethernet port was a must for me. The VGA port was also not required, but is darn nice to have. The USB-3 port will come in handy for more rapid backups and perhaps occasional device charging.

The aluminum chassis, shiny chrome strip and backlit keyboard all add touches of class that make this a thing of beauty as well as a workhorse.

I am a student going into college in the fall of 2013 and had been searching for a laptop for a very long time. After months of searching for a laptop that had what I needed AND what I wanted, I finally found the Sony VAIO.

Pros:

-15.5" is a great screen size; big enough to watch movies or play games if you want, yet small enough to be portable.

-Quick turn-on time due to the solid state drive. The laptop boots up within 3 seconds at the most.

-The screen resolution is solid. HD movies look beautiful and small words are relatively easy to read.

-The touch screen is accurate and smooth and makes Windows 8 easier to use

-600 GB of storage space is more than enough for most people

-I love that this laptop comes with an HDMI port. I can hook it up to any TV and the picture is very clear.

-The backlit keyboard is useful for using the laptop in the dark. I'm surprised at how many laptops these days do not have backlit keyboards.

-The number pad on the side of the keyboard is a must-have for a college student like me

-The keyboard is very sensitive, which could be a good or bad thing depending on the person. I like having a sensitive keyboard since I have small hands. Someone with larger hands may find it bothersome.

-The design of the laptop looks sleek and professional.

Cons:

-The touch pad is very loud when you use it to click

-The fan can, at times, be somewhat loud

-The left side of the bottom of the laptop gets very hot, so don't let it sit on your lap without some kind of pad to put it on.

-There is only one USB 3.0 port; I wish there were more.

-The speakers aren't the best, but they are tolerable. I use headphones most of the time anyway.

-I wish the CD/DVD drive could play Blu-rays.

-I don't know how well the battery works or how long it lasts because I have almost always have my laptop plugged in to an outlet.

Even though there are some negative aspects to this laptop, I give the VAIO five stars because I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a computer for both work/school and for entertainment purposes like watching movies and playing some simple games. And for a laptop like this, the price is amazing. I'm overall very pleased with this product.

I did a lot of research into my laptop purchase and eventually chose this one. A decision which I'm already regretting. I run my own business and work a lot from home, or remotely with my clients. I needed something that was portable, but powerful, and a desktop equivalent in many senses. What I got was a laptop that crashed after 5 weeks and entered a perpetual loop of saying it had encountered an error and needed to restart... restarting, and saying the exact same thing again, so that I could never get it to start up. I took it back to the retailer who said it needed a completely new hard drive and everything on the current hard drive would be lost. Luckily I sought a second opinion at a Sony Store, who ran a system reboot and got it up and running again. Thank goodness. But it continues to shut itself down for no reason at least once a week, has problems starting, and generally just makes me feel nervous that it's going to crash at any point.

But by FAR The most annoying thing about this laptop that makes me want to return it every single day, is that it won't hold a WiFi connection. 50% of the time it connects automatically when I log on, the other 50% it doesn't and I have to try and do it manually. But even when it does connect, this often lasts about 10 minutes before it automatically disconnects for no reason (and still says its connected...although I can't open a webpage or send an email). I have to either reboot, or put it into airplane mode then back to normal to restart the WiFi connection. In a normal working day, I probably have to do one of those 2 things at least 20 30 times. It's beyond annoying and wastes about 40 minutes of every day just trying to fix the connection. It drives me mad.

If I had realised within my 30 day return period, I would have got a full refund and bought a completely different laptop. I feel like I'm stuck with this one, and every time I take it in to get these problems looked at they update the software and say it should be fixed. It never is. In my opinion this is a massive fault with the machine, and having Googled it more since my purchase, it seems it's not an uncommon one either.

I had a very basic Toshiba notebook for 4 years prior to this Sony, and didn't have a single problem with it. Very disappointing.

Okay, I bought a Dell laptop with Window's 7 Pro. I got a Dell laptop with Window's XP. Before I could even figure out that I received the wrong operating sestem, I had to borrow a friend's power cord because the vinder gave me an adapter and power cord that were not compatible.

I am a college student. I don't have a lot of money to continuesly by products to make a device work. I also have finals coming up and need a laptop, so I don't have time to replace products that I did not buy because a seller did not give me what I did buy in the first place.

I am completely unhappy. I wish I could give them negitive 5 stars.

When the motherboard crashed on my old laptop this new one was recieved overnite. My only complaint was that the software advertised was NOT what was preloaded. Amazon offered to take it back and replace it but since it was for College that was not possible without getting behind in classes.

Long story short: this is an amazing computer with very few, forgivable, flaws

I spent a lot of time looking into the X201T because I'm someone who likes to buy computers rarely. The last computer I bought was a Thinkpad R61 in 2004, it did me well for six years and my wife uses it to this day. I have little doubt that the X201T will do the same.

The X201T is less a computer and more a collection of functions, which are made possible by the many ways to provide the computer with input. You have two mice (a red dot and a touchpad), two keyboards (a fantastic real one and one on the touch screen), a stylus (which is both a mouse and a keyboard), and your finger (the most intuitive way to operate Windows or use the internet, even if you're using the built-in keyboard). If you get a set of Bluetooth headphones/microphone you can even do a lot of things with your voice (the pre-installed speech recognition software works better than I expected), and you can control music from your ear. With such a wide range of options, interacting with the computer is smooth and natural.

Good thing too, because it can do so much. My work requires me to read and write, all the time, and the X201T is perfect for that. It is a great word processor all the more so because editing Word documents with the stylus is quicker and easier than the mouse/keyboard combination. Instead of keeping a pad of scratch paper around for ideas, I just run OneNote in tablet mode. If you work with pdf's, the X201T will become your library and your filing cabinet. Having used the tablet to surf the internet, I am now convinced that the web was not meant to be accessed with a mouse. The X201T has all the same functions as an iPad, which makes it an extraordinary media player I hook up my Bluetooth headphones and play the thing from my bag. If you want a television, the widescreen is actually pretty big and very bright (even without the extra brightness upgrade), and you can always hook it up to an external monitor. Of course, this thing destroys email, spreadsheets, and other normal computing tasks.

The computer isn't cheap and without a few accessories and upgrades it's not worth having. The docking station is a must, and Lenovo's tablet bag is critical if you want to work on the go. The multitouch option is a necessity; the 8-cell battery provides a little less power than I'd like (~ 5 hours of full functionality and about two more without internet or Bluetooth) but it's a heck of a lot better than the 4-cell battery; you'll want 4 GB of RAM (expandable to 8); and the 2.13 GHz processor is worth the investment. The upgraded warranty (the one that covers accidents) makes sense for me. That said, I was able to get all of this for about 2K in August 2010 sellers on eBay buy these packages in bulk and undercut the manufacturer.

A couple of relatively minor downsides: forget about gaming (though Halo 2 works well on an external monitor), Windows Media player sometimes skips when I have the computer in the tablet bag and I go up or down stairs, it sometimes gets hot on the bottom when it runs for a long time in tablet mode, and multitouch capability is not built seamlessly into Windows. (You can zoom in Word, but only in 10% increments, and many Windows options are too small to touch with your finger. That said, Windows 7 is very well suited for a touchscreen on the whole.)

Overall, I'm looking forward to the next six years with my new computer. I have no idea what we'll have by then, but I do know that the transition from notebook to tablet has reaffirmed my admiration of technological progress. The experience was similar to the one I had in 2004 when I moved from a desktop to a laptop. If you want to invest in a serious (and seriously fun) piece of technology, dump the iPad and pick up an X201T.

I bought this computer for college my senior year with the idea that I'd keep using it once I became an architect, as my old poor hp laptop (which served me well) was woefully past its prime. What attracted me to this computer was of course the tablet, but I also wanted one that was portable, and strong. My professor had a lenovo, so I looked into the brand. And after a lot of research (and agonizing over my decision) I decided to buy it.

It has worked beautifully.

The tablet works just as one would expect, the pressure sensitivity working well for photoshop and illustrator drawings. And with a few memory/ram upgrades I have used and abused this computer every day, in an environment where other students may be working on sanding a wooden model, or having pencil dust from drawings flying everywhere, and this computer keeps on going despite all that dust.

I've had the internet (3+ tabs), photoshop (easily multiple drawings at once), and word (for that 10 page paper) going on it at the same time. It starts to whine and heat up a bit, but does the job just as well. Oh, and google chat on it as well as of late, with additional screen capture software. that's 5 programs guys, and it does it just fine. In fact, I opened all of that up just now to make sure it still works... yup, going strong!

The graphics card SUCKS, NOT A GAMING COMPUTER which means I can't play most of the new games unless I put up with a lot of lag at lowest settings (starcraft 2 at lowest settings works ok, but that's already pushing it), but if I wanted a gaming computer I would have gotten one. for a computer used to sketch/draw/finalize drawings this is perfect. The speakes are also underneath the laptop and not of great quality, but still louder than my roommate's macs and with headphones it's not a problem.

Overall, 5 out of 5, does everything I want it to and more. I'm not sure why so many people here complain about the pen, but this thing is a breeze to draw with, and it has yet to disappoint. I bought this computer hoping it would last me 4 years (otherwise the investment wouldn't be worth it for me) but it looks like it will easily last me 6.

I bought this computer for "inking", using a stylus to write as one would write on paper.

After doing some research, I narrowed my options down to this "high-end" machine, and "lower-end" machines which were literally less than half the price.

Eventually, due to my good experience with Thinkpad (back when it was IBM Thinkpad) and due to what I read about the Wacom digitizer technology integrated into in this product, I favored this more expensive option.

Some of my experience with this product:

The digitizer feature (used for "inking") is inaccurate, and is almost useless in some parts of the screen. According to Lenovo, there is some driver from Wacom to fix this. But had Lenovo's technicians tried this fix themselves, they would know that it is incompatible with the X201t. This problem is not limited to my machine: it has been observe in at least two machines of this model, but so far Lenovo does not seem to share my concern about this issue.

Lenovo's preloaded software seems to take a lot of memory and slow down my computer. For example, the password manager slows down access to password protected websites. Furthermore, Lenovo's software apparently disables some useful networking functionality of windows 7. One might find "Start-> Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program" useful.

Finally, let's just say that the Lenovo's support for the Thinkpad is not what I expected on any parameter. Fortunately, windows 7 reinstalls relatively fast, so I could undo the damage that bad advice did to my machine. Unfortunately, The tales of Lenovo support's telephone switch are beyond the scope of this review.

Update: some more details for people who asked:

The pressure sensitivity problems:

When you try to write using the pen (for example in Office OneNote), the "ink" turns up in the wrong place, shifted from the actual position of the pen. This shift is different in different parts of the screen. It does not appear in the other side of the screen, but it makes the inking difficult.

In addition, in some parts of the screen, the inking resolution is lower, things just don't look sharp.

The Driver:

Having installed the Wacom driver several times, I can say that it causes a worse problem: when the computer is in tablet mode, you put the pen in one part of the screen and the cursor shows up in another. It seems like the Wacom driver wasn't designed for this machine. Lenovo support tells you to install it, they must have never tried it. I ended up reinstalling my machine (more than once).

Truth?

Indeed this seems like a crazy story about what is supposed to be a high end tablet computer. Those who wondered must be right, those of us who got what is supposed to be a productivity beast really have nothing better to do with our time than spend hours trying to get through Lenovo's telephone switch without it hanging up on us, just to explain the problem yet another time, just to be told to install the Wacom incompatible driver again and call back if it does not work.

Update: Memory:

The 2GB that come with this computer are really not enough (probably because of the Lenovo software that come with it). Extra memory speeds up the computer considerably.

Sleep mode:

For some reason the X201t takes a lot of time to wake up from sleep mode (compared to a 3 years old laptop with Win7). This turns up to be a nuisance when you try to use this computer as a notebook.

Jan 2011 Update:

To my understanding, Lenovo knows that there is an accuracy problem in some areas of the screen in this model. Since some areas of the screen are ok, they don't plan to fix the problem.

Sounds crazy, I know.

May 2011: Tip

You know how your Lenovo shuts down unexpectedly? It turns out that Lenovo forgot that CPUs need cooling. Assuming that you don't live in liquid nitrogen environment: set your processor speed to low.

Thought you paid for a fast processor? More like you bought a fancy intel sticker for your computer (That sticker wears off too).

Consider the new Asus tablets (eee Slate) before you decide to buy computer. If I were buying a tablet PC now, that's what I would get.

June 2011: update

The integrated camera goes offline very often. After a year of using this machine, the camera now goes offline very often. I had to get an external camera to replace the built in one.

Lenovo is selling this laptop without proper driver support. And they don't seem to care whatsoever to fix the issue. Search the internet yourself and see; search for "x201 pressure" and see for yourself that many people have had issues with the pen functionality (for over a year now!) and how Lenovo has failed to provide an answer, much less a working software driver. I called their customer support under warranty, and their response was "Your best bet is to search on google to see if anyone was able to resolve this issue"!!!! Great customer service Lenovo!

There are many issues I've experienced depending on what software driver I've installed: pen stops working after the computer comes out of standby; pen is recognized as a mouse device and handwriting recognition etc won't work; pressure sensitivity and touch don't work together (if your screen has the multitouch option), older drivers are terrible at calibration (where you touch on the screen and where you see the pointer are 5mm off depending on which corner of the screen you press, and this is NOT fixable by recalibrating the device); pen loses its smoothness on older drivers and everything you write/draw looks rather blocky.

I'm giving it a 1/5 star because of pen functionality and customer service; everything else is great about it, but most people who spend extra money to buy a tablet expect the pen to actually work; this doesn't. If you sketch/draw, you're better off buying a Wacom USB digitizer (this tablet's screen is made by Wacom too but after contacting Wacom, they told me that Lenovo is responsible for putting together a proper driver package). If you expect to use the pen in programs such as Photoshop, corel Painter, SketchPad etc, don't bother buying this.

From the get-go this computer has not been worth what I paid for it. It has always had ongoing issues with the network card periodically shutting off which is an enormous pain when you need to convert out of tablet mode to turn it back on. The absolute worst thing is the customer support from Lenovo. I was disgusted that I couldn't even get someone to tell me the part number for a broken part (the plastic latch) since my computer was no longer under warranty. The individual claimed it was company policy not to provide information to someone with an expired warranty. I have bought many Lenovo products in the past but I will be moving onto other brands for any future purchases.
