After buying a different laptop which had horrible audio I went to the retailer and bought this laptop primarily for the sound. It does sound good, but obviously not a boom box. The last one (different brand) was just plain horrible. This one performs well. Battery life seems to be very good. It came with a 4GB memory chip installed and there was an available memory slot so I was able to install another 2GB SODIMM, so now running 6GB. This laptop doesn't have a numlock led which is kinda weird. All in all its easy to use, keyboard is nice, mouse/touchpad is appropriately responsive, screen is bright and crisp. Has Bluetooth, which is good for transferring files. Was the only one I found with BT. Lid seems sturdy. I would recommend.

I got this computer after my 3rd Gateway died. My Dad recommended it to me after he bought one. I researched it and asked a couple of Toshiba owners that I know and took the plunge.

I love how fast it is. Multitasking is a breeze because of the i3 Dual Core processor and I love the look (although the fingerprints show up if you look at it too hard lol). I love the large hard drive and the speakers are the best laptop speakers that I've ever heard. It is also one of the quietest computers I've ever had.

I wish that the keyboard was a little quieter (it sort of clacks when you type) and I wish that the finish on the keyboard was different. I do love the offset numbers keypad, makes life a little easier.

This computer also has HDMI with CEC and I have yet figured out how to use it but it makes me feel better knowing that it's there lol. I would like to try Netflix or something on it in the future.

The webcam and mic are a little shabby but I don't plan on using it much so no big deal. The multitouch pad is boarderless which is great and has the finger zoom feature. I like being able to instantly zoom when I need to.

Overall, I love this computer. It has great specs for the price and is even a great starter computer. Having Windows 7 makes it a little more user friendly (I was powered up and surfing the net within ten minutes). I have recommended it to anyone who will listen!

I really like this computer even though I am new to Windows 7. I love the sound system so much better than my Sony Vaio. I like the screen size but its a little heavy due to the battery. Overall I think I will be very satisfied with this model. Consumer reports gave it a good rating for this screen size and overall Toshiba has the lowest repair rate also according to consumer reports. The missing star in my rating is just because its heavier than I am used to.

I had one difficulty and that was my old wireless router wasn't allowing this computer onto the network. It was found, but it couldn't connect. I recommend you call the manufacturer of the router because I had to download a newer driver so it could work. It cost me $98 but Toshiba couldn't have solved this problem for me.

This seller was a good seller and I recommend them. I received the computer faster than I had expected. And it was in its original factory sealed box, well packed in another box.

Have had this laptop for going on 9 months now. Bought it for $600 on a Best Buy holiday deal. Awesome product for the money even at $789.

This is my 6th laptop since 2001 and it's my favorite so far. I'm not a big fan of long posts so here it is:

PROS

Very long battery life

Excellent HD screen quality

The Harmon Kardon speakers are loud and crisp. Best sound I've heard from a mid-range laptop

Number pad on a laptop keyboard & overall good use of space for the keyboard.

Cool looking backlit LEDs that are flush some might find weird but I love it.

Didn't come with a bunch of crappy manufacturer software.

CONS

Big battery life = big battery. The battery actually puts the laptop on a slant, which again I like, but some may not. The only time I've found it annoying is when I use a slanted lap desk with it (double slant).

The touchpad/mousepad is to the left of the laptop. It's centered over the keyboard because of the number pad to the right. It took some time to get used to and I used to always touch it accidentally when typing causing some typos. After awhile I bought a wireless mouse anyway and turned the touchpad off.

My husband and I traded our terrible Asus i3 320gb laptop for this one. It's an all around great computer. We go to youtube, facebook, hotmail, our universities website to do schoolwork, we've installed the Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe and it's still faster then our Dell and Asus. The S6005 has many good featureslong battery run time, hdmi port, sata port, legible keys. Good performance. The bad side is the display: 1366 x 768. You run out of vertical space really fast at that resolution. Think I'm a wimp? You try it, tough guy. Also, it's impossible to position the display such that the screen has consistent brightness top to bottom, unless you're 5 to 6 feet away. Meaning when you use it, it will be dark on he top and light on the bottom. That display has an extreme vertical angular brightness dependency. I checked this with Powerpoint with a constant color background in slide show mode, which covers the entire screen. For white, yellow and red, the screen is perfectno vertical brightness difference. With dark blue, it's a joke. Midnight blue on top, with washed-out hazy sky blue on the bottom. Sucks if you're trying to show something to someone that involves blue and the hue matters. Like a movie maybe. Or a chart. Or a picture. With lighter blue, green, orange, and purple, the defect is there, although not as pronounced as with dark blue. My friend's 2005-era 15.6" Toshiba laptop doesn't show this defect, the resolution seems better, and the screen just looks a whole lot better. Why did Toshiba cheap-out the display? Not to save money or anything, I'm sure. Too bad.

What is it?

This is the latest update to Acer's line of Google Chromebooks, running Google's own Chrome OSa super light, super fast, and very focused operating environment that brings web apps and the best browser available to the forefront to be the ONLY application available on the system. Despite this "limitation," the device allows users to do the same things (pretty much) that you can do on a full-fledged desktop. Web, email, word processing, spreadsheets, music management, photo management, social networking, news, movies, tv shows... it's all here, and it works well.

Who is it for?

This isn't for everybody. Let me repeat myself. THIS ISN'T FOR EVERYBODY. In fact, if anything, this is only for those who can handle the reality that you will ONLY be able to use the device with web apps. This isn't the same as a Mac or a PC. It's very different. But if you're pretty much or completely living your computing life in the cloud (like most of us), then this is your solution. And by the way, this also makes an amazing secondary computer if lugging around heavy laptops or relying on a stationary desktop computer isn't your thing.

What is your favorite thing about it?

I love how fast it is. It blows every browsing experience I've had OUT OF THE WATER. The way the hardware compliments the web-focused software makes it the complete browsing experience I didn't know I wanted.

What blows about it?

I really am irked by the keyboard. It feels cramped a lot of the time, and although it will take time to get used to, this CAN be a deal-breaker for some. I'm willing to deal with it if that means I can use a snappy machine. I wish Acer would have taken a cue from Samsung, who actually put a full-sized keyboard in their Series 3 Chromebook. Sigh.

Wrap-up.

Over all, this thing is fast, easy to use, and pretty much headache free. I love how it really shows the Chrome OS we were needing the whole time. And for a mere $219 on Amazon (this does NOT include the 6-cell battery, although it is easily upgrade-able), it almost makes too much sense to pick one of these bad boys up.

Grade: 8/10

Pick this up, but be very weary of the keyboard and battery. If you need a long-lasting laptop with a beastly keyboard, the Samsung Chromebook is totally for you. If you need something zippy and cheap, the Acer C7 is definitely your guy.

This is my first chromebook, so I am still getting used to it. But it is lighting fast (compared to the dell I had before). Probably the most memory I use is watching Netflix, but I don't have a problem streaming. It starts up in seconds and the battery seems to last for days on standby, which is nice. Its super light and easy to carry around at work. You can pull it out like a phone and google for quick answers or bring up documents without the hassle of waiting for startup or a tiny screen. I haven't had any connectivity issues with it.

The thing I am disappointed with is the slides, docs and spreadsheets programs.. they are not as compatible with office as I thought they would be, but they will open and edit office docs. However, even with simple documents the formatting is changed dramatically. Its still usable, just requires more effort to re-edit. Being able to store everything on the google drive and open from any computer is awesome.

The only thing that's not good is the bottom doesn't come screwed on and there are actually "warranty void" stickers over the screw holes, so the back does fall off every now and them, which I feel is asking for trouble.

For the price, the value is great. I've never had a computer this mobile or fast. I'm hoping the apps will improve as time goes on.

I didn't know exactly what I wanted, I did know that I didn't want something that took forever to turn on, had to update all the time, and would get sluggish eventually with or without the updates. So I tried out Google Drive and Picasa and some other Google apps and they are great. This was my solution and I couldn't be happier. So great.

The office I work for bought some of these (we are a small firm-and can't afford macs) so that we wouldn't have to lug our personal laptops to and fro from work.

It's cool. I wouldn't have gotten one for myself. There are limits to what you can do with a chromebook. Of course it isn't a full OS laptop so its limits are within expectations, yet some are very bothersome. I'm just going to list the Pros and Cons for my Acer Chromebook.

Pros: Fast start up, decent battery life, integrated google doc, drive and app support. Decent entry level specs for the price. Low price. Light and mobile unit. Has offline mode (in the case of no internet), 4 usb ports

Cons: offline mode isn't the best, limited productivity apps and behind software titans Microsoft Office and Apple's Keynote, very little storage.

The biggest con for me is the printing. I need to print all the time. Google cloud print is difficult to use, and doesn't support commercial office printers, which is what we have. So either you have to buy a special google cloudprint ready printer, or use their Print share..which is finicky, has a very simplistic driver and often messes up my print margins.

Since I got it for free, I'll use it, because it is definitely lighter than my macbook pro. However I wish chrome would/could somehow add driver support, because the printing is a dealbreaker for my personal use.

I wouldn't recommend this as a primary computer alternative to anyone, it's more like a tablet streamlined for production, with an included keyboard and usb ports. It can be useful if you already have a laptop, and want a lighter one for on-the-go needs.

Although everything else about this laptop is very impressive, especially the utility of the touch screen, the trackpad is ridiculously poorly designed.

The trackpad may work fine for a novice who only requires it's use for basic web browsing and e-mail, but for those of us who would use it often to make on the fly precision mouse movements in order to edit graphics, or play games, the trackpad is useless.

It has strong aluminum texturizing to match the rest of the top surface of the laptop; which means it has deep horizontal grooves that allow for easy horizontal movement but dramatically inhibit vertical movement.

I found that moving up or down required a much lighter touch than moving right or left because my fingers got caught on the horizontal grooves, causing the mouse to stutter.

This inconsistency was infuriating for the few moments I used the trackpad to try and 'two finger scroll' down a webpage. I don't know about my wife, but I'd send the laptop back.

Now that I have had a few days to mess around with this laptop, I feel like it is worth letting everyone know how great it is. I guarantee you, once you move to a touch screen laptop you will never want to go back.

The device is very quick to power on, and unlock some other laptops I have had it is very quick to shift between standby and operational. When I am done I simply close the lid and it goes to sleep conserving power very quickly. When I'm ready to use it again, I flip it open, tap the space bar and it is ready to go after entering my password. I no longer feel the need to keep it plugged in constantly like I have with my previous laptops.

The bottom of the laptop is a very hard plastic, presumably to make it more comfortable in you lap, although it does blow out warm air after using it for awhile. It isn't uncomfortable, but I am considering getting a laptop cooler to set it on for extended use. The lid and upper part are a brushed metal and looks very nice. It is probably the most aesthetically pleasing Acer I have had.

Unlike my previous laptops, the keys are all isolated from one another and protrude through the single piece brushed metal top. I think this makes it much more durable than your average keyboard for a laptop, although I shudder to think of the pain to replace a key if you every do have an issue. I don't think it will be a problem, and I do like the keyboard and layout, along with the full number pad to the right. It also has a mousepad at the bottom, although I don't find myself using that too much.

The touch screen is great! It is very responsive and apparently supports multi-touch up to 10 fingers, although I can't imagine when I would need to utilize that. This is big selling point of the laptop. Windows 8 is the best OS Microsoft has put out, so long as you have a touch screen. Most everything about it is very intuitive, and I find myself transition between tasks much easier than on previous versions of Windows.

The computer comes ready to go without too much bloatware on it. I have yet to find any annoying apps that I had to immediately get rid of. I have gotten nowhere near doing a full tweak of the PC to kill extra processes and services, but it doesn't feel necessary based on the speed of this laptop. It has a Windows Experience of 5.8, which is better than I would expect at this price range. For those so interested, the sub scores are Processor: 6.8, Memory: 7.2, Graphics: 5.8, Gaming Graphics: 6.6, and Primary Hard Disk: 5.9. In any case it has more than enough horse power to handle most tasks you would expect to perform with a system in this price range.

The final item I want to plug is the sound system. That is not normally something you think of in a laptop, but Acer went to great lengths to give this machine incredible sound. It has a 4 speaker sound system, and you can watch movies on this device and be very happy about it. You will most likely not want to have the volume cranked up all the way unless you are hearing impaired! It is literally the best sound I have ever heard from a laptop.

The drawbacks are that this has no optical drive. I had honestly not even noticed that prior to ordering, but then I considered how much I actually used the drive on my last laptop and decided I didn't care. My main other complaint is this is a bit heavier than I would expect for an ultrathin laptop, but it isn't massively heavier than I would expect. I attribute this mainly to the reasonably powerful hardware installed.

If you are ready to jump into Windows 8, this is the laptop you want. I don't think you will be disappointed.

The computer is great, a little scratches and well loved looking, but works well. 5 Stars Electronics was the vendor I purchased with. The laptop I received had half the memory and half the HD space as listed and when I emailed 5 Stars they initially said some line about it being my part to do due diligence in assuring my product choice, but I provided screen shots of my order confirmation and they really went out of their way to take care of the issue. It took a little longer to get because I had to ship it back to them, but they reimbursed the shipping and what really impressed me was that they doubled the HD to 80 gigs. I am happy with the laptop and the vendor.

I've written two books and a bunch of articles; I've designed and created a website with intensive graphics; I've used it for Skype and Netflix. No problems with any of it. Maybe it's not a Mercedes, but it's certainly a Cadillac. The only real complaint would be the battery life; running heavy graphics and text at full screen power, I'll get maybe three hours. If I ever need more, I'll get an external.

I like this laptop because it has such good battery life. Would recommend this. Plays games fairly well..I installed Windows 7 after a bluescreen of death, and haven't had any problems since. It starts up fairly quickly, as well.

I agonized for weeks before finally purchasing this laptop. In the end I decided what I really needed was a desktop replacement. A powerful, capable machine that could replace my aging tower and still be a laptop. In that I was not disappointed.

The good

This machine is quick! Video plays flawlessly, I am able to convert movies from one format to another averaging 10 minutes per 1.5 hour movie. My old tower would take 2 hours.

The screen is bright and clear. The keyboard lights up nicely and the sound is pretty darned good. Build quality is good, no flex to it even if you're Mr. Universe and manage to heft it by a single corner.

I like the fast wireless built in to the laptop and its easy to switch between wireless connections.

The so so

This notebook does heat up and grows uncomfortably warm on the legs if you are lounging around with it. The fan is on most of the time and you can hear it humming away although I wouldn't call it annoying.

Windows 8 takes some getting used to. The touch pad is only partially effective at gesture recognition and will leave you disappointed half the time. I guess I don't really get the purpose of the live tiles.. I have reverted to using the desktop mode almost exclusively. I probably won't bother with the hassle of downgrading to windows 7.

The bad

I really, really dislike the battery pack that came with this machine. In order to fit more oomph into it, there is a 1-inch tall ridge that runs for most of its length, functioning as a bit of a kickstand for the laptop so its tilted a bit towards you. While this is fine when its on a table, try putting it on your lap and that ridge quickly digs in and becomes uncomfortable. I am forced to keep my legs well apart so I catch the edges where the bottom is still flat which is also uncomfortable.

I also experienced a weird power pop up that kept coming up every 15 seconds warning me about my power supply. In the end I had to find the utility responsible and delete it from the HD before this warning would go away.

Fnally, perhaps due to some software I have on the laptop, perhaps due to something else, when I display and file open/save dialog, the machine frequently pauses for 10-15 seconds during which time the dialog is frozen. Very annoying for something this fast to be doing this so frequently.

I consider this is a nice buy. It has all you want from a high performance laptop for a reasonable price compared for a Macbook Pro or something else.

At the first time i was wondering if this machine has softbuttons to have quick access to volume, wifi, bluetooth and others, I searched over the internet with no luck. So I had to wait to receive the laptop and finding this out by myself. For my surprise I found the F keys has this option as primary option and if you want to use the keys as F's you have to press Alt+F* as a very nice found.

The laptop is very quiet, materials are good considering I hate black laptops with easy finger printing. For 16mb you have to challenge yourself and the computer to use that much of memory. I bought this one to edit photos in Lightroom and Photoshop, while I listen music and stream movies. I can consider I have all these services run with no issues. So happy for that.

Windows 8? no issues found at this moment.

When I was about to purchase this Laptop, I did what everybody does, and read reviews like crazy. I was very impressed with the specs but other customer reviews had me in doubt.

I decided to go with my knowledge of the specs and purchase the laptop regardless of issues stated by others.

Firstly I just want to touch on some of the issues that other 'reviewers' posted along with their lower star rating... These claims made by others created hesitations in my mind but was never experienced after my purchase.

(1) Fan Noise:

The fan comes on pushing the slightly warm air out of the left side vents of the laptop.

The noise that someone mentioned simply cannot be heard. Rather a very light, gentle humming.

Feeling the light movement of air from these vents is comforting to me, know that heat is escaping.

In some other laptops, you can't feel air movement anywhere around the pc making you wonder about the internal cooling.

This laptop is very efficient in keeping the powerful i7 processor cool on its own without the need for a cooling pad.

The fan is effective and efficient; just ensure that with time, you try to keep the vents clear from dust. This will ensure that the heat is escaping efficiently.

If dust or any other material/substances are blocking the vents the heat will not escape and the fan will increase in speed. This increase in speed will obviously cause the fan to sound louder since it will be working harder to get the heat out.

(2) Heating:

Like I said before, the fan effective and efficiently remove the unwanted heat and keep the body of the laptop cool.

So far I never experienced any overheating of the laptop, used on a bed, used on a sofa, used on a table, used on my lap.

Once the vents are clear and not blocked by anything, the laptop will cool itself down effectively.

(3) 1 inch Ridge underneath laptop:

Other basic laptop designs have a base that lies flat onto whatever surface it is placed on.

Surprisingly enough these laptop designers put vents here (on the underneath) for heat to escape, but since the base of the laptop is pressed flat onto the surface it is placed on, then the heat gets trapped inside and you are then required to buy a 'cooling pad' to push cool air in these otherwise blocked vents.

But with this HP ENVY, the battery is designed is such a way that it has a ridge on the underneath.

This 'ridge' keeps the base tilted off the surface that it is placed on allowing air to pass freely keeping the system cool.

The underside of this laptop has a Beats Audio Subwoofer. Since the 'ridge' keeps the rear of the laptop up, the bass sound from the subwoofer is echoed effectively of the surface that the laptop is place on. This creates a cleaner, clearer sound as compared to other flat based laptops.

The tilt also positions the keyboard at a comfortable angle for your typing use and gives a clear view of the keyboard while it rests on a flat surface.

Since this ridge is only on the battery, it is not designed 'end to end' on the laptop. Rather it is positioned to the middle-back of the underneath, creating a comfortable space for both of your legs to hold up the laptop while you sit and use it.

Therefore the 'ridge' in no way creates and un-comfortable experience while being used on your lap.

Since the position of ridge forces you to position you legs to the both sides to hold up the laptop, the under vents are kept clear keeping the system and your legs cool.

The design also keeps the subwoofer vents clear, maintaining the free flow of the bass sound from the subwoofer.

(4) Weight:

This laptop has specs that will give alot of desktop systems some real competition, with that in mind, making a powerful laptop like this mobile is very impressive.

In other words, the system is thin and relatively light when considering the features, power, speed and various capabilities.

(5) LED Backlit:

The Keyboard is Full LED Backlit and is switched on/off by a key on the keyboard.

It has a beautiful pure white glow around each key along with the individual numbers and letters being lit.

A key for the caps, muting and switching the wifi on and off also has a LED light on it to indicate on/off position.

(6) Finger Print Scanner:

So far I've had no issues with this feature as the scanner reads my finger with one pass.

I assume that if issues are present, it may be a manufacture problem.

(7) Heavy Gaming:

Although the Laptop has impressive specs, don't give it a bad rating because you can't run one of your high graphic games that can't even play on your desktop.

For persons looking for a gaming pc, my advice is to try getting a six core with a 3.5GHz and up processor on a desktop tower.

This laptop handled games with medium graphics very smoothly without ever freezing, overheating or requiring reboot.

(8) Windows 8:

Giving any PC a bad rating due to your experience with Windows 8 is very unfair and unfortunate.

To all the persons unsure about Windows 8, give it a try. No one could have been more sceptical that me about it, but after familiarizing myself a bit, I realized that it wasn't much different to Windows 7.

The usual desktop screen that would appear after booting, is now a screen with tiles that act like shortcuts to different apps and folders.

These 'live' tiles (shortcuts) can be modified to the user's liking, for example more shortcuts/apps can be 'pinned' to this screen just as shortcuts were 'pinned' to Windows 7 Task Bar.

You can even revert to the more common desktop screen via one of the tiles.

Since the Windows 8 requires fewer resources to operate, the graphics can be set to max to show all the 'fluid' display graphics on any pc without taking away from other app performance, so on this laptop it runs effortlessly.

It just requires some getting used to it does have some bugs and some aspects can be improved but so far I have no major issues with it.

(9) Wifi and Wireless Connections:

As expected, the wifi reception range is very impressive.

I am now picking up signals from neighbours that I never saw coming up with my old pc.

The wireless connections are made fast and effortless by this laptop, contrary to what others are saying in previous reviews.

After I am connected, I stay connected without any drops or interruptions, maintaining high signal strength.

(10) Shipping:

The shipping was very fast and was maintained in excellent packaging.

Laptop came in original HP Box in mint condition. I even got it with a 'Prime' offer, so fast shipping was free.

The above ten points I made were to clear up some bad reviews that was mentioned by others who might influence you to purchase something else and lose out on this monster machine.

I wanted to post this since they, some of the other reviewers, almost convinced me not to buy it.

But I took a chance based on the specs and decided to check everything out myself.

I wanted to confirm if the statements made by these (few) people, represented actual product flaws or just unfortunate manufacture defects.

I am in no way discrediting persons with genuine issues; I am just saying that their issues may me of some manufacture defect and not a product defect. Some people though tend to exaggerate minor personal dislikes and give poor ratings.

I'm providing a review based on actual experience compared to many other laptops that I had encountered in the past.

(11) The Body and Structure:

I must say that this pc in no way feels cheap. It is made of a metal frame with solid structure.

The keys feel soft and comfortable, pressed effortlessly.

The touch pad is large and positioned away from hands while typing.

I did find that the right and left click buttons on the touch pad are a bit 'clicky' and could have been designed like the keyboard buttons.

I especially like the feature of: Wifi, Sound, LED Backlit, Screen Brightness etc, all being controlled without the pressing of a function (fn) key. Just press the assigned key and the changes can be made.

The overall design is strong durable and well thought out, providing comfort of use, flow for heat and sound, etc. Even the HP logo on the top face of the laptop lights up, just as the apple in Macs light up.

(12) The Speakers and Sound:

There are five Beats Audio Speakers including the Beats Audio Subwoofer on the underneath.

The sound is truly immersive! You wouldn't believe that it is coming from a laptop.

There are two speakers on the monitor facing you, two speakers facing upward just above the keyboard, and the subwoofer below.

Tested it with the Blu-ray Transformers2 disc and I was blown away.

It's unlike any other laptop sound. You just have to experience it!

(13) The Upgrade to 16GB RAM:

When the RAM is upgraded to 16 GB, the Intel Rapid Start Technology is disabled.

I will go into a bit of explanation of this to help others understand what took place and the benefits.

There are two types of these 'Technologies' on this system:

(1) Intel Rapid Start Technology

(2) Intel Rapid Storage Technology (cache acceleration)

* What is Intel Rapid Start Technology?

Intel Rapid Start Technology is basically a feature that allows the PC to resume from `sleep mode' faster than usual.

* What causes the Upgrade of the RAM to affect the Intel Rapid Start Technology?

The laptop has 32GB of SSD (Solid State Disk).

8GB (from the 32GB) is used as a hibernation partition for fast resume via Intel Rapid START Technology.

The remainder of the SSD, about 22GB as displayed by Windows, is used as a cache to accelerate the 750 GB hard drive via Intel Rapid STORAGE technology (also called Intel Smart Response Technology).

NOTE: the 32BG is displayed as 30GB, just as the 750GB hard disk is displayed as 699GB, nothing new here.

Intel Rapid Start requires the hibernation partition (the 8GB) to be equal to or larger than the total amount of RAM installed. Since there was an upgrade to 16 GB of RAM, Intel Rapid Start will no longer work.

From the 32 GB SSD, Intel Rapid STORAGE Technology requires a minimum of 18.6 GB. Therefore the 8GB on from the SSD cannot be increased to the 16GB (equal to the RAM) for the Intel Rapid Start Technology to be enabled, because there will be less than the 18.6 GB that is required for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology to work.

Hence the reason why the Rapid Start Technology is disabled, but the Intel Rapid Storage Technology is still functional as normal.

If you want to have 16 GB of RAM and both Intel Rapid START and Rapid STORAGE technologies working, you'd need to replace the 32 GB SSD with something larger, like a 64 GB SSD for example. But this would require some detailed research before interfering inside there.

COMPUTER UPGRADE KING was the seller that I bought my HP ENVY with the 16 GB upgrade and the Intel Rapid Start Technology disabled.

I personally tested the system performance with this Intel Rapid Start Technology disabled, (that is; resuming the pc from sleep mode), and it resumed very fast regardless.

To me the upgrade to the 16GB of RAM from the original 8GB is a very big improvement in overall performance, hence the reason why I refer to this machine as a beast.

The benefits of upgrading the RAM to 16GB outweigh the benefits of the Intel Rapid Start Technology, since the computer resumes fast (from sleep) without it anyway.

I still got the 1 year warranty from HP for the original parts of the laptop, and COMPUTER UPGRADE KING gave me three (3) years warranty on their upgraded parts.

I posted many inquiries to them and they did not hesitate to give full explanation and answers to my questions with fast response.

The delivery was free and on time with secure packaging.

Conclusion:

the only major hesitation that existed in my mind was the fact the RAM was upgraded, causing something to be disabled.

But the benefits of faster overall performance outweighed the Intel Rapid Start Technology.

And with the full warranty provided by 'Computer Upgrade King' for their upgrade and parts, it is well worth it!

My Laptop is now the "ENVY" of all who knows about it...

I have had it less than a week. I have to confess I am a Gateway fan, there are not many of us left. Last year I bought a Samsung on one of Amazon's daily specials, hate it. It is so slow in opening a browser and once open it continues to be slow, hate it! So this would be my 7th Gateway between desktops and laptops in the last 20 years. When I purchased this one for an older Gateway that is fading I was concerned about 2 things the speed and well Gateway, being it was sold or merged and basically has few offerings anymore. I know nothing about processors and tried to read up on them a little and tried to compare them with other laptop offerings, but frankly I didn't know what I was doing, I just took a chance. It flies, even Explorer seems faster (not a typo) so that part has worked out. One thing I have always liked about Gateway is the touchpad pointing device. In shopping at stores I noticed most laptops now don't let you scroll with the one finger on the right side. This is just a conditioning thing, I have always liked it and this laptop has it and the option of using the 2 finger in the center of the touchpad. It has Windows 8, more cumbersome but not a problem. I didn't give it a 5 simply because I haven't had it long enough. I have to tell you it is very confusing buying a computer that's why I went with Gateway. I bought a ASUS a few years ago and didn't like him so I took a chance with one of my old reliable's.

ordered as new, loads of confusion on amazon's part prior to christmas, received laptop on christmas eve, problems after 3rd day, when contacting dell, told that warranty was expired because laptop was registered the year before to someone in California, I am in VA. very disappointed. I own this laptop with the LED backlit screen. I purchased my laptop directly from Lenovo March 2009 and installed Win7 almost a month after purchasing.

What's typical about win7 on laptops is the lack of battery life. It's miserable. On Vista I had near 12hours of uninterrupted use with the extended battery, while on win7 i'm lucky to get 3.5 hours on a dimmed screen. That's Microsoft's fault, not Lenovo's. So I'm going to say it's got EXCELLENT battery life with the supplied Vista operating system.

Now I've owned 3 thinkpads prior to this and I have to say the quality has gone down considerably since the IBM days. The keyboard is mushy, so are the wrist pads and overall construction is inferior to how it used to be. Deflation and poor manufacturing don't end there, last week my fan seized to work. It had rattled for a couple months before it seized so I knew at some point it would fail, but I don't think a year is good enough for a thinkpad. It commands a price and should live up to it.

As far as reliability issues go, that's about it. In a little over a year I spent $60 in fan, and $10 in screws on maintenance which is a bit unacceptable for me. I was hoping for at least 3 years before any maintenance was required. If I had sent the laptop in, there would be shipping and handling, inflated parts price, and labor which would probably cost even more.

For the good, it's a typical Lenovo generation thinkpad. Construction is still noticeably more robust than the competition and has the classic look. Hinges are strong and beefy looking, integrated periphrals are well placed and has the "think light" embedded into the top of the monitor which is surprisingly usable, however doesn't replace illuminated keys. And in this day and age, I don't think it's too much to ask for illuminated keys on such an overpriced computer (bang per buck is low) but I suppose this is the simplicity they are going for.

I could go on and on about it's shortcomings, but that's with any product I've ever bought. Overall, I think this is a genuinely good product from Lenovo, only if you can get it on a bargain.

Awesome laptop once you know how Google products work in order to get the most out of this computer. I also like how quickly it boots up. It is also a perfect device for users who like cloud services. After researching this computer online, I found that Google Docs can be saved as a Word doc, can be used "offline", and I found all the necessary steps to reboot in case there is a problem with the OS, how to 'clean' the computer if necessary, and steps on how to add your own screensaver. There is a 'Get Started' app which takes the user through many important features for beginners. The keyboard feel as comfortable and easy on the fingers as my Windows PC. I love that updates are in the background so I would not have to be kicked out like in Windows based OS. I also like that security is built-in so that I don't have to purchase anti-virus/spyware/malware or set up nightly or weekly updates. The laptop is very light and I have no problems with brightness and the colors are vivid when watching movies. I have used my USB stick which houses all my Word docs and have had no problems accessing those files. I would definitely recommend this for those tired of Windows based OS!

Beautiful machine that is fast as lightning, I can't believe how rugged this feels compared to the smaller chromebooks. This machine is built to last with quality construction and a sturdy keyboard, it's not a cheap product at all. The functions perform flawlessly and can run numerous apps at once with zero lag, ZERO!!! The drawback is no optical drive, but I purchased through HP a USB multi drive and now the system is totally dialed in. I Love It! I can do any office app through Google office and I couldnt be happier.

I will probably never buy another Windows machine. It is lightweight, boots fast, and battery is good. Love the screen size, it is just right. Net books are not for me. I wish it had a lighted keyboard and it doesn't play well with printers. I was going to order a cloud printer, but instead I used my old lap top with a busted screen and set it up as a print server to run with the lid closed using Google cloud print. Problem solved. Never have to worry about a virus and my stuff is synced into chrome. The free online storage plan is awesome. Google nails it again. Works great with chrome cast.

I decided to purchase this Lenovo laptop after about two months of serious shopping around. Research told me that Lenovo rates right under Apple for reliability, and Amazon's pricing afforded the best bang for the buck. I couldn't justify paying twice as much for an Apple with less memory and HD capability. I'm not disappointed with the Lenovo at all. I've had it about a month and it fills my every need. Love the backlit keyboard. The only thing that is bothersome is that as I type, the balls of my thumbs sometimes rest on the touchpad and cause undesirable consequences, but I guess that's just a matter of getting used to the mechanics of the thing. If the touchpad had been centered in the unit, this would be less of an issue. The Windows 8 OS took a couple of days to get used to, but I'm ok with it now. One thing I do miss from Win XP is the games package...not available in the Win 8 version. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

I have had this laptop for 2 weeks. It came with Win8 and it is very touchy like the other reviewer says. But I don't think it is Win8, I think it is this piece of junk touchpad. If you put too much pressure on the bezel next to the touchpad, the mouse jumps to another spot. I want to take a hammer to this piece of crap. The memory it came with, 4GB DDR3, is the worst in the market. I did some research and found out that the memory is slower than DDR2 in some cases. I purchase 8GB DDR3, Patriot brand, and it now runs faster and smoother. I do not recommend this laptop simply for the fact that the touchpad is garbage. I have a couple of IBM Thinkpads that I really love and I thought I would have the same experience but I was wrong. One of the problems with the touchpad is that there are no buttons, it is just a big rectangle with the buttons under the lower-left and -right corners. Sometimes they respond and sometimes they don't. JUNK!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPUTER IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO!!!
