Reviews of HP Pavilion dv4-2049us Notebook - AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M300
I bought my HP pavilion dv4 model 2049 about 2 years ago. If I knew then what I know now about this product, I would have gone with something else. The laptop isn't necessarily awful, it just has a few problems then when you add all together create enough issues to annoy me enough that I am writing this review. I am a student who only uses my computer for basic needs homework, internet, research, etc. I never download anything or go to any shady websites.
First of all, I just purchased a new power cord the other day. It happens to be the 4th power adapter I have had to buy for this laptop. I have tried HP brand and generic replacement adapters, but nevertheless, in a few days there will be a fifth power cord Ive used with this laptop. They always fry up in a few months. I don't leave my computer plugged in more than the average joe, and I plug it into a surge protector.
Another thing Ive noticed over the past--probably 6 months now--is man does this thing overheat! It gets so hot that if you actually put it on your lap it would burn your skin. Sometimes it shuts itself down to avoid overheating. It didn't do it the first year and a half, and I realize that it could probably be fixed by installing some new fans. But really? After only 2 years?
Those are the two major issues I have wit this laptop. There are other little things that I do not like about it though. Like sometimes clicking noises randomly come from the hardware for no reason at all. Sometimes I am not even using it when it makes the noises. That is something its been doing since Ive had it.
Overall, its not terrible. But like I said, I wouldn't buy this laptop again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either.it is a very good one , only the thing what I want to change it is about mouse, it is made shine like a metal , but is ok , is not a issue . take it if you want a good and cheap computer.

Discount APPLE MACBOOK NOTEBOOK - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM
Look, I knew I wasn't getting a new computer. I wanted an Apple, I wanted a white computer & I wanted something compact but not too small. I knew this was the computer I wanted the second I saw it. I read the reviews from others & according to how many this company has sold...there are not many complaints.
I was a bit nervous but took the plunge anyway & I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the results. The computer itself works pretty good. When I got it I had to update the system programs but that was quite easy. The computer was shutting down on its own but that problem has since gone away...how it did this, I don't know but I didn't do anything to help it along. A few other glitches were; having trouble cutting & pasting, putting pictures on fb and a few other things like that. All of which I have figured out. I am about 95% happy. The cost was easy, it fit right into my budget. And now I"m sitting here on holiday typing out this review to you. I didn't like the refund policy or that I had to pay for shipping had anything happened or been wrong with my lil computer but luckily that wasn't the case.
I should also mention that as soon as I made a complaint to this company they were pretty quick to answer. Pretty happy about that. They gave some good solutions to my computer shutting down on its own. Glad I made the purchase, no regrets :)

Buy Samsung NP300V5A-A06US 15.6-Inch Laptop
Very sturdy, and well build. I really fail to understand the poor reviews.
Pros:
The laptop is very sturdy. it is not going to fall apart or break easily. I think that I will be able to get many years out of it. I saw one complaint about the cooling system, which I strongly disagree with. I never have had any heat issues, and the computer is normally very cool to the touch, and you can very comfortably use it on your lap without having to worry about the heat, no kidding, this thing gets no hotter than a paperback book! The fan never comes on, and when it does, it is very quiet. When I am playing 3D games, which this computer can easily pull off, The fan gets a little bit louder, and you can feel some heat, but this is very normal. It is still completely usable, and doesn't get that hot. The performance is spectacular on this machine, Programs launch very quickly, and games run smoothly. The Pentium Dual Core B950 is essentially an i3, minus hyper-threading and processor virtuialization. What this means is that is is slightly, but not noticeably, slower than an i3, and you will not be able to run certain virtual machines on it. You could not make a hackintosh out of this. (run OSX on it)If you don't know what these terms mean, don't worry about it, you wont ever need it. 4 Gigabytes of ram makes it smooth and fluid. I recently got a message warning me that I had not rebooted it in over a month, and it would speed up if I did. After a month, I still have not noticed any performance issues. It has been either on or "sleeping" the whole month. If you are using it as a student, great! All the MS Office programs open in about one or two seconds, which is pretty good, comparatively speaking. Aero runs smoothly, and the transparency effects are great! The keyboard is wonderful, I really like the design, as it makes typing really easy. it is similar to a MacBook keyboard. The trackpad is also great, It is large and easy to use. It also ignores when your palm goes across it when typing, a great feature. Again, It is very Mac-Like. (Samsung is the maker of Mac Keyboards, Screens, and trackpads. this is no coincidence!) The built in webcam is great, it goes up to 1280x1024. This is spectacular! it is very sharp, and vivid. it works well in low light. It is HD, too! The screen is anti-glare, and very nice! I really like it! The ports are strategically placed, which is a great feature! Oh, and the battery really does last 7 hours when you are browsing the web on low power mode. about 5 hours on "Samsung Optimized," and 3 on High Performance, for games.
Cons:
There are no lights on the caps lock, number lock, and Scroll lock buttons, it pops up on the screen when they are on.
The caps lock is easy to hit accidentally.
The back lid scratches easily, keep it in a laptop bag!
Also, while they were still working they would regularly give us the "blue screen of death", dumping and loosing all unsaved content. NOT COOL!

I bought 2 of these and I was very impressed. They gave great performance and I loved their durable shell. Unfortunately the ac-in on both broke quickly. First the cords would just slip out easily. But finally one, and then a few months later the other, just stopped accepting a charge completely. Now I have 2 paperweights. Fortunately I only bought them about 8 months ago from Costco and I'm hoping that I can get them repaired or replaced.
Also, one of the charging cables failed after only about 5 months. I had to buy a replacement from Amazon for around $30.
I particularly was pleased that it wasn't over-bundled with a bunch of useless software. We mostly used it for Internet, DVD watching, connecting to TVs to watch movies. It was great for those tasks.
If it wasn't for the ac issue, I'd have given this product 4 or 5 stars because it was a great product for the price.
Video and Cpu processors are combined on the Intel B950 and the cooling system can't keep up.
I have owned 2 of them both had same problem. Don't even think of playing any kind of 3D game useless you do I what I did and take the entire system motherboard out of case and put a 120mm FAN on top of the CPU heat sink and add Artic Sivler thermal paste.
If you do not know anything about computers stay away from this one.

Update: The repair process was a nightmare and a failure. The cheap plastic power port is hard-wired to the motherboard and when they break, which is VERY common, the whole board needs to be replaced. We got one fixed but then the same thing happened again immediately after it was returned to us. With the other one, they claimed the moisture sensor under the keyboard had been triggered at some point, voiding the warranty. So although this had NOTHING to do w/ the problem, they refused to fix it.Also, while they were still working they would regularly give us the "blue screen of death", dumping and loosing all unsaved content. Stay away from this unit and all Samsungs that have this same body style. The cooling system is awful, housing 100% very thin plastic,Video and Cpu processors are combined on the Intel B950 and the cooling system can't keep up.

Cheap ASUS X55A 15.6" Celeron DC 320GB HDD Laptop
Went to BestBuy to check out the sale deal for the Asus X55... Looks to be a nice student version of a laptop.. great features and style... though after checking out the new windows 8 os, I think I will pass on the deal.. Mainly due to Windows 8 preinstalled.. I do doubt that I will upgrade or move into any computer that has Win 8.. way too far out of the working environment I operate in... Win 8 may be another lossy diversion like Millennium and Vista was... I will stay with computers that offer Win 7... sad to see the direction MS is going here... still I hope that lots of consumers go for the MS 8, makes the older MS 7 pc's cheaper for us working folks...

Bought it as an upgrade for an older laptop. I love just about everything about it except that it has Windows 8. What a terrible operating system experience. It is not intuitive at all; it's confusing and difficult to use so far. Cheap Acer Aspire V5-571-6893 15.6-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black)
Bought this as a Christmas present for my teenage brother and was very happy to find out that it supports World of Warcraft excellently. Graphics are crisp and there is no lagging. Windows 8 login screen is different from usual computer systems, but that's just personal preference. Great system for the cost! Acer has always had quality systems.
The first computer I ever bought was an ACER and they've become more stylish and more technologically brilliant through the decades; they make an effective, capable, dynamic machine with all the bells and whistles. I'm a budget shopper so I always want to get as much bang for my buck as I can. I feel I really hit the jackpot with this one.
Windows 8 is something I'm looking forward to learning as I like to keep my brain cells fired up and functioning well. Since this is a jump from Vista Windows, I found some wonderful tutorials on YouTube which have helped me to curb the fear and make me feel competent in delving into this new frontier. If you feel you may need some extra tips on working with Windows 8, I highly recommend the videos by JAGTutorials. After watching these instructions, I felt much more confident and less apprehensive as this guy does a great job of teaching us. All in all, I can't imagine a better computer and can highly recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their lifestyle.

It's been many years since I bought a new laptop and it was time to update my life with more power, new Windows 8 and an HDMI port for TV connecting. This computer gives me plenty of juice to do what I want and plenty to spare. I'm not a gamer, but I do watch movies online and run an astrological program, do some bookkeeping and surf the web. I went from a 14" Toshiba Satellite running Vista Windows to this ACER, and I can feel the energy just bursting from the seams. Arrived on time and in perfect condition. It took a little while to get used to Windows 8 and there are a lot of apps that are installed that I will never use, but everything thing works fine. The speakers aren't that great but I have ones from my old pc that I use when I'm watching a movie or listening to music. I love the color, slightly sparkly. Okay, I fix computers for a living. This is a great deal, on a great laptop, by a trusted Manufacturer. I picked up one of these for my Mother in law, got my wife a different model and of course my wife likes her Mom's better!
Giving a one star rating to this laptop because you don't like Windows 8 is beyond ridiculous. It's like saying I don't like this car because of the paint. Who cares? Slap a different operating system on it. The hardware is solid. Rock solid.
I exclusively sell Lenovo. I'll fix anything, but for my money, I'm gonna pickup a couple more of these.

After extensive searching for a good affordable laptop, I bought this laptop from amazon. They delivered it within a day time as I requested. I was very anxious about using Windows 8 because I read soooo many bad reviews about it.......like they almost convinced me that it would be a big flop.....BUT WAIT!!! I have found Windows 8 very interesting and more attractive to work on. It took me only 15 minutes to learn how to use it.........I mean it's easy to use, just with new ideas. And I took a gamble choosing this laptop without a touch screen......but now that I am working on it, I don't think I need a touch screen laptop to use Windows 8. Also, this laptop has awesome speakers and you would enjoy them!!! Then this key board is soft enough to make you feel as if you are playing on scrabble game. The hardware also looks sturdy and reliable. There is a new recovery button present here. The battery is long lasting and would work easily for about 4 hours or so. I think it is a good option for someone who is looking for a good package in affordable price. This machine is still new to me and I hope it would keep me happy in coming days!

Make no mistake, Lenovo produces a solid fully featured highly-ranked laptop for... peanuts.The G500, with an Intel Core i3-Ivy Bridge quad-core 2.5 GHz processor, 500GB HD, 2 3.0 USB ports, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, with Win 8 as native OS, and more, the G500 matches anything in the 2013 game up to twice the cost. I did kick my RAM up to 8GB since I use Adobe Photoshop CS6.
This G500 will get 'r done! You can pay a bit more for the i5 processor model but you will not gain much/enough.
I have had computers since 1990 and Windows from 3.1 (with a few Big Mac's along the way) and I am here to promise that if you give Win 8 64-bit a chance, you WILL fall in love with it. I did. No manual. Look Ma, no hands. Just toured and learned. Quickly. I predict that if you liked Win 7 you will really take to 8. Really. And moving into Win 8 and setting my network, adding devices, etc., it was a SNAP! Even more effortless than in Win 7.
Lenovo support is excellent, both online and through telephone contact.
The only drawback, for some, might be the weight, generally slightly heavier compared to most lappers. This is due to overbuild and should NOT be considered a minus.
The design is exceptional, contemporary, and stylish sort of in a Chinese way. Lenovo has been around for many years (began with IBM) and you'd be surprised at how much Lenovo there is today in other brand computers.
I could go on and on heaping praise on Lenovo and this G500 but I will bet that IF you do your research and compare, you'll grab this or another Lenovo model pronto.
Now go do your homework.
And to the nitpickers, yes, this is a late 2012 model.

Actually it is difficult to critique the Lenova itself. I could barely use it because of Windows 8. I tried and tried often over a number of days. I sought help from others. I looked at YouTube tutorials. I heard from others later that Windows 8 is not user-friendly to those not accustomed to the touch screen type and that it may be a "disaster" for the company. I am used to Windows XP, and I could not get used to the new system. I felt that my sanity and composure were worth more to me than the computer, so I sent it back. Lenovo - IdeaPad 15.6" Laptop - 6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive Review
I purchased the Lenovo Ideapad P500 for my birthday from Best Buy a while back, and I love it.
I'll list the pros and cons of this system for easy reading
Pros
*2.5 Ghz processor, very fast, can run several processes at once
*HD monitor WITH HDMI out
*beautiful aluminum casing
*comes with Windows 8
*excellent build quality
*runs cool for hours
*simulated surround sound speakers
*750 GB of storage space
*HD webcam and mic
Cons
*the trackpad is left-oriented
*the trackpad has no spacer to differentiate the left or right button, and in fact, may click the buttons if pressed too hard
*the casing can dig into your hand or wrist when using
*the Intel Centrino 2230 Wireless Card DOES NOT WORK
The Centrino Wireless cards have a reputation for being poorly made (just do a Google search), and no matter how many times you try to install the drivers, you will not be able to get a reliable wireless connection on it for more than an hour or two. The best idea is to buy a $20 USB Wifi receiver to go with it if you do intend on buying this laptop.
Otherwise, it's well worth the money you pay for it.

I've used this laptop every day since receiving it and haven't had any issues. It's super-fast, and I ESPECIALLY love the fact that it doesn't get HOT underneath, since the vent is on the side. I've only had the laptop for a few days, but so far I'm happy and it seems to have been a good ultrabook for the price (I got mine for just under $600). I did a lot of research (including spending too much time at Best Buy and the Apple store) and read tons of reviews on at least a dozen laptops before deciding this one had the best features to price ratio for my needs.
Pros: It's super light, like a MacBook Air, but several hundred dollars cheaper. It boots and operates fast, and comes out of sleep mode in seconds. Operationally, it's everything a student could want. I don't do video/photo editing or play games other than solitaire, so I can't comment on how it would perform for those tasks. The screen is also a good size for using throughout the day in class, commuting, etc. I had a teeny netbook for years, and in retrospect I have no idea how I could stand it. The only way to get a bigger screen would be to shell out a lot more $$$, so again this is a great laptop for the price. The speakers are also good.
Cons: The track pad is occasionally iffy, but for the most part gives me no problems. It's certainly better than those on some other ultrabooks I tried out, but I think the MacBook Air's is more reliable (for that matter, the track pad on my 4 year old laptop is better shouldn't technology improve over time??). The only major annoyance I can point to is the loud fan. It's quiet most of the time, but especially when turning on it's really loud. At first I thought something was wrong with it, because it was being so loud when I didn't have anything but a browser open. Battery life is also ok, but not the 6 hours advertised. At 100% I have about 4 hours (and it's right out of the box), and obviously that will go down with use.
Other: A lot of reviews complain about Windows 8. It's true that a touch screen is much better for Windows 8, and this ultrabook doesn't have one. I downloaded the Classic Shell so my desktop looks like regular Windows.

I did a lot of research in purchasing the best laptop for my needs. At first Windows 8 intimidated me but the more I used it the better I felt about it. This laptop is light and compact. It's fast and comfortable to use. I can use this on desktop or sitting on my sofa in my lap. I like speech recognition and had not thought about it until yesterday. This is my new favorite laptop. It's slim, light, and fast. It looks great, I get questions and compliments all the time. Of course I took Windows 8 off (installed Ubuntu Linux). No problems with the touchpad, works great. The only thing I'll take issue with is the average battery time of 6.5 hours stated in the product specs. It might last that long if all you have open is a text file in notepad. But if you're a normal user with a few to several apps running, it's only going to last for a good 3 hours. Not really a problem for me, I just bought a second power adapter to keep in the trunk of my car. HP Pavilion dm4-2180us Entertainment PC - Gray Reviews
I love this computer. Absolutely head-over-heels love it. It's compact and light enough for me to carry to and from class without breaking my back (can't say this of my old, 7-lb Dell!). They keyboard feels WONDERFUL. Construction feels solid. Beautiful design. Really amazing specssame hardware as a MacBook Pro!for half the price. The trackpad is a tad finicky, but I've adjusted the settings so it works for me. It'll take a tiny bit of getting used to, but there's an adjustment period with any new computer. I'm super happy with my purchase, and with the SquareTrade warranty I bought with the computer, I see us having a long, happy life together!
EDIT: I just realized that the keyboard on this computer has a strange hill in the center, like it's being squeezed or something. It doesn't interfere with typing at all, but a brand new computer shouldn't have this kind of defect. What's more, when researching this computer, this was one of the things someone cited as a flaw in a review on another website, so I guess it happens fairly frequently. I didn't mention in the first draft of my review that this is my second of this model of computer; I bought the first one at Staple's a couple of weeks ago and had to return it because it had a faulty "W" key and a really jumpy track pad. I've noticed that this track pad is kind of inconsistent, and maybe more finicky than I previously thought. These design flaws have me considering returning the machine, but you just can't find this kind of hardware and gorgeous design for the same price point. Maybe I'll just get another one... third time's a charm, right?
I had a HP DM4-2070us and it skip letters like crazy after 3 months. Every 5-6 keystrokes you type will have one keystroke that is missed, that is, even though you did type that key, it will not appear on the screen. Or, you would hit the space bar or the Backspace key and it will not respond.
I had to call and deal with HP Technical Support. They wasted my time trying out all kinds of stuff: Windows system restore point, uninstall and re-install keyboard drivers, full system recovery (that's a fancy term for re-formatting your whole hard disc), etc., etc. All these attempts failed to fix the problem.
After struggling with all these for over two weeks, I have to ship it back to HP Warranty Repair Center and that took two weeks back and forth. During those two weeks I was out without a laptop to do my work. The Warranty Repair Center replaced the keyboard and ship it back to me. Unfortunately, that does not fix the problem. HP is kind enough to replace it with HP DM4-2180us but the whole process took another 7 days. I would be happy if that solve the probelm. Unfortunately, when I get the brand new HP DM4-2180us, it has exactly the same problem -as soon as you type fast (over 45 wpm), the problem is obvious.

I spent a long time researching computers and this one fit the bill in terms of functionality and price point. I really like almost everything about this machine its cool, quiet (even with the fan running), and fast. I did uninstall a little bloatware when it first arrived, but that was easy and quick. The only issue i'm having is with the keyboard. It is very stiff and significantly slows down my typing speed because I have to hit all of the letters very hard to make sure they all come up on the screen. The shift key in particular is hard to use to the point of severe frustration. I was looking for a computer to replace my 4 year old Dell laptop, and came across this HP in consumer reports. It was recommended by them, so I figured it must be a good one. And it certainly is!!! I have always had Dell laptops, but I thought it would be a good time to try HP and I'm really glad I did. It has wonderful features, and Windows 7 is amazing. I don't do any sort of gaming or anything like that, so I can't speak to the graphics or processor capabilities. I do however, normally have many internet and excel windows open at once, and it has yet to skip a beat. It never hesitates. I was very hopeful getting a laptop, having been used to desk top computers for business and home. I must say, that I agree with the reviewer that if you type more than 40wpm or so, the keyboard inputs aren't always correct. The "shift" button seems to me to be too low and to the right and I always end up hitting the "enter" key, changing the paragraph. When I consciously type slow, as when I force myself to look at the keyboard, it's ok. Worse yet, when I type an email, the message often times gets deleted mid-sentence. I'm not sure what key does this all the time, but it's annoying because I have to retype a message, sometimes multiple times, to get it through. I love the computer in every other respect and find the display to be crisp and the navigation and speed excellent. But the small keyboard introduces many mis-keys and errors typing. To me,it seems like a desk version of an ipad. Is it a sub-notebook? I don't know...it's not advertised as such. But for all but the most ardent believers of everything small, this notebook computer should be skipped for one with a full-size keyboard.Thursday, December 19, 2013

Do not be fooled by the negative reviews. This is a really good laptop for the price. As others have said, it's enough performance for normal tasks. I use mine for IT utilities, but also at home for normal activities as well as hooking HDMI to TV to watch movies on the web. Very nice.

Actually I do agree that the speakers do not have great sound. It is clean, but you get high end frequency response (lots of treble). Still, for a laptop, I don't care what the quality sounds like. External jack or HDMI fills in for higher quality sound for my music or movies.
**EDIT: To help the sound, disable the DTS Sound app, and set the audio hardware to at least 96000 Hz, it increases the volume a lot. The speakers are still poor, but the external jack sounds much better. HDMI is completely separate and sounds good all around.

Seriously? You're going to knock down a product cause it doesn't come with a Windows 8 guide? Try going to Microsoft's website or YouTube and you'll find a tremendous amount of how-to's and videos to get you started.
"Pad is very sensitive to touch":
Not true. I was actually very impressed by the feel and response of the touch pad. The cursor responds very smoothly to the movement of your fingers and never seems to jump too far as other laptops.
The other naggers seem to show that they are unhappy people no matter what, so it's not worth commenting. So, with the exception of the built-in speakers lacking nice flat sound, this is a great laptop and worth the price.

I just got this to replace an older Dell laptop (8 years) which served me very well. The new Toshiba is an excellent budget priced Laptop with the basic features most people need. I am an IT professional with over 25 years experience and this is a fine soluiton for a home user. It is not a gaming laptop, heavy graphics design, etc, but for browsing, web design, basic graphics design (I use Xara Pro X), and Windows 8 it is working very well. As I am restoring files from my old system I will update this post as time goes by. So far setup has been very straight forward. Files are restoring now, all looks good. Speed is excellent, the Core i3 is performing a little better than I expected.
