I love this laptop. Slim, yet still has a DVD drive (not so common these days). The touch screen makes clunky Windows 8 so much easier to deal with. The touch pad is very responsive, easy to right and left click. Despite being thin it feels sturdy and doesn't flex when you put pressure on it. It can do some serious yoga, the screen tilting back almost 180 degrees. Backlit keys are fancyand for a $500 laptop, it looks really classy. Everyone who sees it goes, "Oooooh".

My love for this laptop doesn't blind me to its faults, howeverit's a budget laptop with a touchscreen, and that's that. I haven't tried to run anything big on it yet, but its speed is not anything spectacular. Should be fine for average web surfing/word processing use but it's nothing flashy. I also don't like the way the keys depress. They feel a bit mushy. I find the speakers a little tinny, though you can get fair volume out of them. They're weirdly located on the bottom of the laptop. The three USB ports are all right next to each other on the front left side.

Still, I would definitely buy this again.

I bought this computer for school from amazon to replace another Acer computer that I had broken (I dropped it and the screen shattered. I highly recommend the Squaretrade warranty, I got my money back no questions asked). The old Acer was only a year old and had Windows 7. I was hesitant about Windows 8 at first, but after reading reviews and watching demo/tutorial videos I decided that I wanted to try Windows 8. I am so glad I did! If you're going to get a computer with Windows 8, make sure to get one with a touchscreen like this one! No sense in upgrading to a newer OS without getting all the functionality out of it. I have found the OS to be incredibly fun to use.

This computer DOES have a DVD drive, I just used it yesterday to install Office 2007. Love the backlit keyboard so I can work at night without a lamp. As others have mentioned there is no indicator light for whether the caps lock and num lock are on/off. This is only a minor annoyance to me. The keyboard is comfortable to type on. I haven't had any trouble with touching the mousepad by mistake while typing, but I also use the laptop on a lapdesk that has a padded wrist pad that elevates my hands a bit and makes typing more comfortable. To be honest I don't really use the mousepad at all, I like using a hand-held mouse better. Doesn't have anything to do with this particular laptop though. The touchscreen is very responsive and I don't notice any fingerprints on it unless the screen is on a completely dark color. Can't say anything about the battery life since I use it plugged in 98% of the time.

Setup was easy. Be prepared for a TON of updates the first few days though. The second time I restarted it I had over 100 updates to install. It was a time consuming process the first day or two. I've been having a lot of fun personalizing everything though. Apps are addicting, so watch out!

I shopped on amazon for DAYS and did a bunch of research and read every review. I am 100% satisfied with my decision. For the money, this is a great computer. Glad I bought the Squaretrade 3 year accident plan. Great peace of mind for an extra $122. Any student should be stoked to have this computer, I know I am!

I've been using this laptop for a month and there are several features that I like--one that I don't. I like the keyboard layout with a number pad to the right (great since I do part-time bookkeeping with this) and the backlit keyboard helps me to see what I'm doing with just a soft light on in the room. I'm getting used to Windows 8 quickly and it works great with the touch screen. The screen is wide and the computer is very light and thin for it's size.

The problem that I had is that the touchpad is large, flush with the computer casing and located to the right of the keys. My left hand has to rest on it to type so I was always accidentally opening apps or doing something weird with the mouse. I finally figured out that it's easy to turn the touchpad off. I like to use a mouse, so this isn't a problem for me. It's easy to turn the touchpad on and off with the "Fn" key + "F7" and you can turn it right back on again if you would like to. That's the only reason I gave this computer a 4 stars instead of 5. (I went to a store and looked at other brands of laptops and the touchpads all look pretty much the same as this one. Not sure why they have decided to make it so large and flush with the computer case.)

Overall, I highly recommend this computer. Great price at $499.

Pros: Fast, light, quiet, and a good picture.

Cons: I hate Windows 8, battery doesn't last as long as I'd like, there are no left/right buttons on the mouse pad, touch screen doesn't always pick up touches accurately.

I picked up this laptop during one of the specials that were offered and so far I've been pleased with it. I had an HP laptop that was on its last legs after 5 years of moderate use. Hopefully this one will be able to last me 5 years as well. Windows 8 is a pain, and this thing also comes with a bunch of bloatware. I deleted what I could but I'd have to really dig into it in order to weed out the rest. Microsoft seems to be trying to follow the footsteps of Apple while looking over to Google for additional inspiration. Unfortunately they're just moving farther from their bread and butter office software. Anyway, that's enough of my rant on them.

For your basic or entry needs of computing, this laptop seems to be near the top of the pack in its price range. I did my research and so far so good.

Anyways, it's a very nice laptop! I wanted to get a MacBook Pro but I heard Mac's don't really acquire Java & most of the students have a struggle on that. THIS ONE ROCKS! reminds me alot of Macbook pro! I fell inlove with this laptop! I was all inlove for months now! Still inlove until now! Very fast! No worries at all! Trust me, you're not gonna regret getting this laptop. okay? don't believe other people here saying it's a bad laptop cause to be honest, this laptop rocks!

The only thing I don't like is the speakers! It's at the bottom & it's slow unless you put it up high then it gets better. No problems anyways cause I always use speakers so no problem. My friends wanted the same exact laptop!

This laptop is worth the price! I actually got mine from BestBuy not here but I just want to comment & tell you all that this laptop is worth the price! Mine was even expensive than this price! haha!

I bought this new laptop to replace my previous Dell, and it just arrived yesterday. So far, so good. I was able to set it up within minutes. Using the Windows File Transfer was awesome, too, even though it took a long time to get my settings and files over. There is not a whole lot of crap on this laptop as someone claimed, either. I was expecting a lot of junk on here when there isn't. My connection to WiFi is 5 bars which never, ever happened on the previous Dell. The speed is PRIMO! I'm extremely happy with this laptop. It has not lagged one time since I've been using it (and I have 3 browsers open at all times with 2 always logged in). My youngest daughter is happy, because she is now the owner of my other Dell since her Acer died on her. It's an Inspiron 1545 model that I bought in 2009 or 2010 and still going strong. I think Dell is the bomb :-) May this one last 10x longer :-)

Dell Inspiron i15R-2105PNK 15-Inch Laptop (Pink) UPDATE, Sep 30, 2012 5:42:08 AM PDT: Okay, let me update this after a few negative new discoveries. First off, no matter what I set this on, the screen saver does NOT come on. No matter what I set this on, it does not go to sleep while the lid is open like it is supposed to. I have changed the settings twice now, and it just doesn't matter :-( I'm not happy about this. Secondly, it runs HOT, HOT, HOT, HOT. I have a fan pointing towards that side, too, and it still is very hot to the touch. It's like the fan is NOT working to cool this off. My other Dell did NOT run hot at all. Thirdly, I see the price jacked up since I purchased this 9 days ago. I am so glad I bought it when I did, because I would NEVER pay $700 for it ($600 was bad enough)! I'm not happy with the it's performance right now at all, but I will keep trying the settings and see what happens. My main worry is how hot this runs :-(

Dell Inspiron i15R-2105PNK 15-Inch Laptop (Pink) UPDATE, Oct 12, 2012 7:48 PM CST: One more update, and I hope that's the end of this story. I woke this morning to find my laptop wouldn't function. Every file I had of .exe was defunct. It wouldn't even let me run a virus scan. It wouldn't even let me restore. It wouldn't even let the Dell tech connect to my network so he could get inside and see what was wrong. So, we had to end up doing a factory restore much to my dismay, because, of course, that would mean having to re-install all my files, programs, etc. I'm not finished as yet, but I must say this laptop must have been sick upon arrival. The graphics were absolutely horrible on here in comparison to my other Dell, the sound quality was horrible, and it ran extremely hot. Since the factory restore, the graphics are 1000 times better than before, the sound is 1000 times better than before, and it is NOT running hot...not even warm. This is a mystery, no doubt. I just hope that whatever went wrong this morning will never happen again. The Dell tech suggested I had dl'd a virus, but I beg to differ. In almost 21 years of being on line, I never have. I am one that keeps virus protection, updates it, and does not click on links when I have even an ounce of doubt about it. He could not explain how I could get a virus when my system was alseep. So, that's a mystery as well. Anyway, right this minute, I'm so happy with my laptop, but my fingers are crossed that doesn't change :-)

I've had this laptop since Friday, and am pleased with nearly everything. The processor is fast and responsive. 8GB of RAM is definitely noticeable. I haven't noticed any lag or stuttering during any of my tasks. The hardware is well built and feels great, much lighter than it looks. The speakers are the only issue I've seen. They are loud, but are very tinny. Sound doesn't seem natural when watching a movie.

The biggest issue is the amount of bloat Dell puts in their software. I'm not a fan of game or software demos, and there are a lot on this laptop. There is even a dedicated button to launch the game service in the top right corner. With the terabyte hard drive, these programs likely won't be noticed, but still an inconvenience to mention.

For this price, the value is obvious. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a new laptop.

If I had not been that I was in need of a replacement laptop I would not have made this purchase. I should have listen to my gut feeling and canceled this order. The screen is nice but that is all the good that I can say about the machine. Considering that it has 8 GB DDR it really isn't that fast. I was going to upgrade to and Hybrid drive like with my old machine that would give me the small SSD and a 7200 rmp drive but after checking with dell this machine as an old connection for the hard drive so of course the only place I could find a hard drive was with Dell and it wasn't any better that what is it. The track pad is a pain because if you touch it while typing you are all over the place. This machines weight is almost 10 lbs not something I can have sitting on my lap as what a laptop is made to do. Yes they use to be even heavier but now anything over 5lb seems a little outdated. Yes. I should have done even more research and trusted my gut. The worst part was that within 30 days the price dropped over 150 dollars and Amazon does not have what a lot of the sites have that if it's lower within 30 days they will refund you. That's not the computers flaw but all the other are. Never a Dell again. We had XPS and they were junk and Dell did not stand behind the problems. Lesson learned even if you need a new computer really bad and you are still unsure. Stay unsure and get what will work for you and not be sorry. Lucky Lenovo's direct site had a fantastic sale over the Black Friday weekend sale and got a better laptop and someone else is going to take this one.

Picked this particular Dell laptop over a similarly-priced Sony because this one had a slightly better processor, more RAM, and a larger HDD. The Dell was about $50 more, but in my mind that's a no-brainer. Another bonus is that this model came with Windows 7, and not Windows 8. Like any Microsoft Operating System release, I'm not even considering the newest one until there is a Service Pack 1 update available. This model sports an Intel Core i5 processor. I've found that the main difference between i5 and i7 is Hyperthreading support. If you don't plan on running applications that will take advantage of Hyperthreading, there's not much sense in spending the extra cash for the i7 processor.

Display is nice and large and the laptop didn't have too much preloaded software. Dell includes a nice utility to register the laptop, and even better, automatically uninstalls the registration utility when it's finished. It was a simple matter to uninstall the remaining items I didn't want before adding my own anti-virus and Office software.

The main complaints I have are the lack of a USB 3.0 interface, no backlit keyboard, and a simply huge touchpad. I'm not kidding about the touchpad it's so large that I keep hitting it with the palm of my right hand. I suppose I will get used to it, but I still can't figure out why anyne would need a touchpad that large.

There have been no signs of heat issues as reported by a couple of other users. Perhaps defective processor fans? Anyway, I'm happy with the purchase so far and will update the review if any negative points develop.

I purchased this laptop about a month ago for basic use (internet, videos, word processing, etc) and it has so far been wonderful.

Pros:

Fans are very quiet and this machine almost never feels warm even after watching a movie. Very surprised after reading other reviews that say it can sometimes run hot.

Fantastic keyboard.

Very nice sound quality. Sound is better in my headphones than my iMac.

Nice graphics.

Perfect size.

Cons:

Battery life is only ~4 hours.

A little heavier than other new laptops, though this isn't a big issue.

*I have not tried gaming on this computer.

Overall, I'd say this computer is a great purchase for any student, especially for the price.

I am extrememly happy with this new Sony laptop which had all the bells and whistles I was looking for. The only con is only two USB ports which are on opposites side of the the laptop--a design improvement Sony should make would be a third one with power) along side one of the other ones.

However, what I most want to review is Amazon's handling of a minor problem I had. While the details of a minor problem with the initial computer was worked out, Amazon immediately sent me, without charge, another identical computer. I have since returned the "extra" computer, but Amazon's swift action at no cost to me has made me a happy and loyal customer.

I have owned a thinkpad X41 for 5 years. I loved it because it was small, light, and relatively powerful. After all that time of constant usage and unintended abuse, I went into the market for a replacement. That was/is a sturdy laptop that just refused to die.

I looked at the Lenovo X200 and X300 at the store. The x200 is small and fast, but my eyes really needed a bigger screen than a 12". Especially if you do graphics and design work. Plus it still lacked a dvd drive. The X300 is just over priced and still looks like my 5 year old laptop just wider. When I went to the store and saw all three I immediatly went online and bought the Sony VAIO VGN-Z570N.

It is a great laptop! The battery litereally lasts 5 hours on Vista! Imagine downgrading to XP (included) or using linux. I also got the deal where you get a free bag and battery if you buy by the end of December (check out pc nation). The keyboard is smooth and responsive. I love the toggle switch between performance (when using photoshop) and stamina (when just surfing the net). The screen is pretty wide and the resolution is incredible. It boots really fast (I am windows user). It has an HDMI slot and now I am watching movies on my HD screen dowloaded on this laptop. I do wish the screen was taller but that's not such a big deal. I highly recommend this laptop for people looking for performance, portability, and style!

Initial experience was mixed. The set up files for Microsoft One Care were corrupted (and on the restore partion also). I tried Norton 360 trial for security. Wireless sped seems to be slower than previous Centrino N setups. Sony support went on the system and nearly trashed it. I suspect the excellent but very tight security of Norton, may have added to my problems. After initial frustration, I tied to restore it to factory settings and used a disc for Microsoft One care. With his new instalation, what a difference. This is now the computer I was looking for. While the WiFi is still at 65 Mpbs, video from other computers comes in smooth I am using a D-Link dir 655 N router). The Sprint wireless works very well. The unit has builtin GPS and works easlilly with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009. Battery life is good, with wireless on I would estimate 3-4 hours of usefull battery life (with the standard battery).I have been using now for 4 days since my reinstall and a so far no further glitches. The unit is a pleasure to use.

I have been through my share of laptops in the past year. I am the I.T Manager for my company so I have a bit of experience in this department. Typically I go with DELL on just about everything, but honestly I believe they have captured most of the market and by doing so they have really started slacking on their products which led me to SONY. I'm not even going to touch a HP, Gateway or Toshiba and I had previously owned a SONY a few years ago and had relatively little to no problems so i figured i would try again.

So far I have been more than impressed! Out of the box this little guy fired right up without any problems. After about 45 minutes of removing the pre installed Sony software (not sure why it took some people hours?) and a few Windows updates this machine was flying.

The display is incredible, much better than any laptop display i have ever seen, this is partially due to the higher end Nvidia video card and the onboard 3GB of RAM.

The hard drive is more than enough for me at 320GB.

The unit only weighs 3.3lbs, to me this is nothing coming from a 14.1" DELL Precision M2400 which weighed about 2x that!

Some of my gripes:

Internal Broadband card is set to Sprint! (come on, who uses Sprint anymore?)

BIOS is very very limited, I'm a bit spoiled with all the options you can set in a DELL's BIOS

It's still a bit hard to find accessories for this laptop since it's so new. I'm trying really hard to find a extra power adapter since the one i bought at the Sony store is a "travel" adapter and it's basically a brick.

All in all I'm VERY happy with my purchase, I will be travelling to Germany in a couple weeks so i guess that will be the ultimate test.

Keep in mind, there is a big brother to this laptop that was not in stock at the time when i bought my laptop but i think it is called the VGN-Z590N which comes with a more powerful graphics card, a BluRay player and 4GB of RAM, had I seen that one i would have bought it but either way, I'm happy with what I got and would HIGHLY recommend it.

Review after using this since September. My model is slightly different and I use high resolution version.

There are some positives and negative.

Positives

Light but powerful

This PC is very light, but it does not sacrifice its processing power. Intel's latest 45nm P9500 works great. Even somewhat heavy graphic applications or encoding-decoding of files can work fast. Heat is also well controlled probably due to the benefit of the P9500 and the combination of internal system design and the air flow structure inside, which is typically the strong part of Sony that is very good at designing smaller consumer electronics. I never felt the annoying heat from the system on the keyboard and/or the areas around the mouse touch panel.

Long Life and Graphics

The switch above the keyboard that lets you choose between the nVidia chipset ("Speed") and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD ("Stamina"). On a stamina mode, my experience is that the regular battery can keep the system running for around 6 hours, which is remarkable compared with its light weight. I set the brightness lower in addition to the stamina setting. Graphics resolutions and other features are automatically set at lower level on stamina mode. Performance, particularly with games and 3D applications, is better with the nVidia chipset, while the integrated graphics card favors battery life. A reboot is no longer required after a switch, either, due to the Intel Centrino 2's support for switchable graphics.

I use 1600x900 resolution for the display, which is beautiful due to its LED backlit and very high resolution compared with other laptops. Its benefit is that you can have more workspace when using multiple applications at the same time, for example, a few excel sheets and excel VBA at the same time.

Negatives

Software for 3G connection, using the embedded Sprint modem does have some issues with compatibility in some cases. In my case, some Excel Add-In that uses an internet network connection crushes Excel itself every time I use it. Vaio Support desk which is as you image very slow to response due to inappropriate advice and long waiting time spent 6-8 hours in total and finally gave up to solve the issue and admitted that the original SmartWi software that manages network connection cannot be removed from the system when you use the Sprint modem is making trouble with other Excel Add-in. I suspect that the usage through Sprint is monitored by the software and both Sony and Sprint have some agreement on the revenue sharing of wireless data fees. Anyway, this is not at all positive for users and I had to buy other modems for use mobile data connections. Sony needs to focus on hardware only or otherwise improve its software quality. The frustrating experience with the support desk tends to remain in the memory of users for very long period of time.

Otherwise, I feel the keyboard quality needs to be a bit improved to the extent that some key generates creaking noise sometimes. And the mouse pad area is just a bit too close to the keyboard and I sometimes touch it and make an error in typing.

Net-net, this is the best ultramobile notebook that has strong processing power, real mobility, and beautiful design that I ever seen. It outperforms many competitions like Mac Air and X series from Lenovo. This is expensive notebook but if you need the best one right now, this is it. SmartWi is annoying in some cases but the support desk should have learned something from the trouble that I had already.

This is a recommended slider tablet/ultrabook/laptop and I'm writing this review on this same computer here. Great for portability and nearly has the strength of a traditional tower PC (yes it does have 8 GBs of RAM one of the main reasons I got it for the RAM & it's a slider tablet laptop). I wanted a portable computer that could also be a tablet, but not be weak in specs (like most tablets are unfortunately). This is a hybrid of many different styles in one. It's supposed to be a laptop, but it's also a tablet too (without the weak specs).

The only bad thing about this is the small Solid-Slate-Drive (SSD) size, but you can hook up larger HDDs to it. I use the "Seagate Expansion 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV3000100" at home and the "WD My Passport 2TB Portable External USB 3.0 Hard Drive Storage Red (WDBY8L0020BRD-NESN)" on the go (since the WD Passport doesn't need a power source, it gets power from the USB cable). Good red color on the HDD, a softer matte red.

It's a MUST to get a cooling pad for this thing, it gets fairly hot at the vents (only one area). It doesn't run cool at all like the other reviewer said. I know because I got 2 of these and the motherboard fried on the one when I tried to plug in a USB device (that one kept running hot too then died It did work good though before its 'death'). The MSI reps said that was the case when the one wouldn't power on at all. The rep was pretty good and helpful, but that one was beyond any help since it was fried.

Make sure you keep the packing material with any MSI products, you have to have the same box with the same serial #'s on the box to match the laptop and everything for warranty claims.

The fan doesn't make any noise and I can hear like a rabbit so I know. The cooling pad I got for it also hardly makes any noise especially when the laptop is on it.

Definitely get a cooling pad, this is the one I use: the "iHome Netbook Cooling Pad with 2 Built-In Fans, Red (IH-A714CR)"(it works the best for this laptop, highly recommended cooling pad!!!). There is no USB hub with it but a storage area instead.

I got a red wireless mouse to 'match' the cooling pad (which is not a sharp straight red, it's a slight dull off-carmine red); this is the mouse I got: "Bornd Bluetooth 3.0 Optical Wireless Mouse (C170B RED)". (I also have a blue one too for another tablet I have the Lenovo K3 Lynxthese mice work with the Bluetooth in these machines.) This red mouse is a nice sharp bright pretty red, while the blue one is a bit off blue (kinda dull), both work great.

This laptop is slowly replacing my old Windows 7 8 GB RAM 2.70 GHZ tower (which is nearly 4years old, but still works good). Windows 8 has its problems and when it updates itself, it takes a long time: 10-20 minutes depending on the updates. But when there's no needed updates, this laptop turns on in about 4-10 seconds and shuts down just as fast. Get the programs Stardock Start8 and Stardock ModernMix for Windows 8 ($4.99 for ModernMix and I think $8 with Start8) and they'll help you get some Windows 7 back in the frustrating Windows 8 layout so you can function better.

With my 2nd one, I kept it plugged in a lot and that's not a good idea since you need to 'train' the battery right to drain and charge fully. Mine stopped charging at 97% (I had it less than 2 weeks) and the charging light wouldn't turn on, so I used the included "Battery Calibration" feature on this PC to fix that problem. It took about 3-4 hours leaving it alone and it needs to be plugged in for this, but it got fixed and is charging again. I am happy. Do the Battery Calibration every 3 months is what is recommends, but I had to do it sooner. The Battery Calibration can be found in the 'Charms' Windows 8 menu near the far right end.

I recommend this laptop and with my recommendations above, you should have as much fun with it as I do with mine (well, as long as you don't get a defective one like I did2nd one is going good). :) 1 star off for the many different glitchy issues and the motherboard just frying out of the blue. Not completely perfect, but good enough definitely acceptable despite the small problems here and there. Hope this review helps at least one person out. Thank you for reading my review.

OK I wanted a tablet, but I needed a small laptop when traveling for work. I love this thing!!! It does exactly what I need. I did have to get rid of some free-wear 'gifts.' Its not pre-loaded with too many items I don't want, but there were a few. I gamed on it for hours, the thing does not get too hot nor is the fan too loud. Its light, easy to carry. I do need a better case. The one it came with, well, it leaves much to be desired. Asus gave me a cool backpack with my large republic of gamers laptop. I would have liked a better carry case from MSI.

First of all, the specs here are closer to truth than the 2.2 lb listed elsewhere. I weighed my S20 on the kitchen scale and got 2.58 lb.

Anyway, my 11 year old son's school allowed him to take Computer Science and join the Robotics club this semester. He began by taking his mom's Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) to the CS classes, but the robots work only with PCs, so he also had to commandeer my 17 inch monster of a notebook. Eventually I decided to get him his own little PC.

I looked among the 11.6-inch Windows 8 touch-capable ultrabooks, and picked this MSI. It has a cute white exterior, different from run-of-the-mill silver shells his classmates have. The transformer effect further impresses his friends and satisfies the vanity of a kid. The keyboard is spacious for my son and usable for me. The screen is bright and vivid. The retail vendor (not Amazon) gave us a free padded jacket that fits like a glove. The whole thing weights less than 3 lbs and takes up less space in my son's backpack than the bigger ones among his textbook. It runs all his programs and Microsoft Office without any stutter. The battery lasts long enough for the toughest school days. There are two USB slots, so he can use his Logitech V220 Cordless Optical Mouse for Notebooks (Dark Silver) and connect to the Parallax PLX-28336 Programmable Scribbler 2 Robot (with USB adapter and cable) at the same time. I also like the 8GB of RAM, which should be sufficient for the life of the machine; thus I won't have to upgrade it.

Now, the nitpicking: First, the 128GB SSD will not last forever. I have a spare 512GB for it, but a warning sticker covers the screw and threatens revocation of warrantee if the case is opened, so I decide to wait a year before the upgrade. The lack of a built-in pointing device and the intrinsically imprecise nature of touch interface mean that a mouse is needed. Finally, the last generation (Ivy Bridge) Intel i5 is certainly fast enough itself, but its built-in GPU is pathetic to the point of having occasional dropped frames on full 1080p video. This is an issue shared by all ultrabooks, however, and not MSI's fault.

Overall, we like this machine a lot and expect 4-5 years of good service from it.

This laptop is great. It is powerful, well made, and even has good battery life for a 17" machine. Our only complaint is in terms of value. After buying one of these ZBooks, we found that the Dell Precision has similar performance at a much lower price. With the 3200 x 1800 resolution screen, we found that employees who used to demand a 17 inch display were now begging for the higher resolution, lighter weight, and smaller package of the Dell Precision M4800.

There is nothing wrong with this machine, but give Dell a chance if you are looking for a better value and higher screen resolutions.

For some years, LENOVO was making notebook PCs for IBM. All ThinkPads had the IBM logo on them, plus LENOVO in smaller letters elsewhere.

Since 2004, I have purchased nothing but reconditioned IBM/LENOVO machines and have always been most satisfied with them. This R61 is the first ThinkPad I've owned that doesn't include the IBM logo. I can see no difference in it layout or quality-wise from my IBMs of the past.

I prefer this brand because of its DURABILITY. I've heard that ThinkPads are often the choice of on-the-road businessmen. True or not, these are built to last.

The R61 has all the features I want, plus a few that don't interest me. (I never use the DVD burner, mini light, touch pad or fingerprint scanner.) Stereo sound is strong, plus there's an all important miniature headphone jack. Audio adjustments can be seen on-screen. The keyboard's white painted-on characters only wear off if you type with long fingernails, a lesson personally learned with previous notebooks. The processor is an Intel Centrino.

ThinkPads are ideal for heavy daily use. Mine is on at work from midnight to 7 am, and again in the afternoon from 2 to 5 pm or so. That's at least ten hours a day. Every one of my 4,100-plus AMMY reviews was written on a ThinkPad, and I'm a key pounder. The machines really hold up great.

I give this R61, hard tested now for over a year, my highest recommendation!

This computer is great. It is what I have been waiting for, a fully power windows PC in tablet form.

Pros:

The computer is relatively high powered for a tablet and a computer of the price.

The keyboard is great, this tablet is very widescreen which means the keyboard has the space to be less compact than most 11 in keyboards.

The keyboard feels great while typing.

The tablet comes with a bluetooth mouse which is not always necessary but handy at times.

The touch works great.

There was not much bloatware preinstalled

The case with the bluetooth keyboard has a little notch/slot system to allow the user to type and use the computer in their lap as a laptop unlike most tablets/cases (this is my favorite feature).

This is extremely lightweight which is great for school.

The screen powers off when you shut the case and powers back on when the case is opened.

Cons:

So far I have not found many, I sometimes wish there was a touchpad built in to the case in addition to the keyboard.

There is only one USB port which is a bit limiting.

The keyboard is very thin and as a result has a tendency to move with typing.

The keyboard is micro USB charged the included cord is incredibly short as it is intended to be used to power the keyboard from the computer. However I wish is had come with a decent length cord.

The computer came with an adapter for the microHDMI but is goes to VGA?

The case is a little inconvenient when you wish to use the tablet as a tablet, you can't just flip the keyboard behind (or rather you can but you will hit keys as the keyboard remains on) and the case is a little difficult to remove.

I previously bought/returned the surface and I actually like this device more than the surface.

Hello folks, the following information is shared to the best of my knowledge and experience with the unit. Just to give you a piece of mind, I am an IT professional with over 10 years of experience including mobile solutions (i.e. phones, tablets, etc.)

I decided purchase this product purely for business. This means no games and no major processing involved such as running applications such as Photoshop® or AutoDesk®. I use it to browse the web, work on documents, and even take it out for presentations. Occasionally, I like to play tablet games here and there and watch some movies on Netflix®. I can barely feel any delay because the applications that I use are small and require very little memory (RAM). If you use this purely for the same reasons that I have, I doubt that you would be disappointed. Keep in mind that this may be designed as a tablet, but the parts are purely made for a PC, this means that the weight of the device may be slightly heavier than your standard iPad® or Android® Tablets. But for the cost and and simplicity of a mobile office with touch screen it was one of the best investments I have made this year.

The final warning I can provide is regarding Windows 8 I know that several people dislike it so far, but for those who are technically savvy, please take the time to play with it and understand its potential. I didn't like it at all in the beginning, but when I grew to understand the functions of the OS, I came to realize that it this technology is ahead of its time and that when I needed certain features to be performed, it was ready and waiting the whole time that I had doubted it.

Final note: I don't like the search feature in Windows 8 but it doesn't mean that I couldn't work with it, this is just my opinion. Regardless, this is a great PC/Tablet it is easy to use, easy to learn to navigate and explore (well for me anyway), fairly light, and the price was fairly alright. The simplicity is there and as I had stated before, you get what you pay for.

Normally I am way to lazy to write reviews but this product just made me so happy that I have to write a short review.

It is my first tablet ever and probably like everybody else I was tied up for for days reading through reviews and test reports. Finally I convinced myself to go for the Acer Aspire P3 due to its relatively low price, features and good (unless only 5) reviews here on amazon.

First of all I am not a guy who looks meticulously looks into details if the max screen size is 1366×768 or somewhat higher or if the processor is 1.5 or 1.8 as long as the resolution looks nice and the device runs smoothly. I mainly bought a Hybrid because I wanted a device capable of replacing my old Laptop as a work tool for the university but also for leisure activities like watching a movie or reading/playing something while traveling.

And the Acer P3 does just that. It was set up and ready to go in about 5minutes, runs perfectly smooth, both for working and watching HD movies and it just looks great and is awesome to handle.

Just to cut to the chase, here is a list of my personal pro's and con's:

Pro:

Easy set up

Boots in approximately 1.5 minutes

Great screen resolution (just looks high def even if it is not)

Win8 is awesome and you can personalize nearly everything

Great price compared to similar devices

Comes with Case, Keyboard which are both very handy and neat looking. E.g. you do not have to switch the keyboard on or,off. It simply shuts itself down when not used or comes to life immediately after you start to type on it.

Also included: a bluetooth mouse (batteries included), miniUSB to USB adapter, micro HDMI to VGA, cleaning cloth, Lite on adapter for 100-240V (very good since I am from Europe 😉)

Overall just everything what i expected from a Hybrid

Con:

Battery life with approx. 5h shorter than for example the Acer W700

It is a bit tricky to get the tablet out of the case

A lot of preinstalled crap like McAfee or stupid Acer apps. But you can get rid of everything very easily and and than set up everything you like and know.

Only microHdmi to Vga and not microHdmi to Hdmi or Dvi

Of course I knew about these cons beforehand and they did not really influence my buying decision simply because I can overlook/fix (e.g. buy an hdmi adapter😊) them due to my preferences and the price of this Win8 tablet.

I have been intensively using the Acer Aspire P3 for 4 days now. I hope it furthermore runs as smoothly as it does so far.

It is a good computer but it has some imperfections that maybe will disappoint you. When you try to reboot your computer the computer will freeze. Looks to be a nice student version of a laptop.. great features and style... though after checking out the new windows 8 os, I think I will pass on the deal.. Mainly due to Windows 8 preinstalled.. I do doubt that I will upgrade or move into any computer that has Win 8.. way too far out of the working environment I operate in... Win 8 may be another lossy diversion like Millennium and Vista was... The Envy X2 is a sleek hybrid laptop\Tablet that runs Windows 8. This isn't a Windows RT device like the Surface, the Envy will run all your Windows desktop applications. This tablet has a dual core Atom processor which is not the speediest processor in the world but the trade off is fantastic battery life. The Envy has a battery in the tablet portion and a second battery in the keyboard base giving you around 12 hours of total run time.

The build quality of the Envy X2 is excellent and the IPS display is a pleasure to use. The tablet portion clicks solidly in to the keyboard base. I've read reviews elsewhere that had concerns with the keyboard but I have found the keyboard to work fine.

The Envy comes with 64 GB of storage but about 10 GB are devoted to a restore partition. There is a MicroSD slot on the tablet and a full SD slot in the keyboard base allowing for expansion. The Envy has 2GB of RAM with no option to increase it.

I was not expecting the Envy X2 to be a powerhouse due to it's limited specs but it runs Windows 8 and Office with no problem. Boot time and shutdown are quick. Overall for my needs the trade off for better battery life over the core i5 tablets is worthwhile. I should note that this is a secondary system that I bought to travel with and I have a Laptop with a core i7 for the heavier processing.

In terms of a tablet I still prefer my iPad 3 to this device. That isn't so much because of the hardware but rather iOS seems better suited to touch than Windows 8. If you are after a tablet that will run your Windows desktop software, though the HP Envy X2 is a great little device.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I'd like to preface by saying my review is of the hardware, not the software. Suffice to say the Envy x2 comes with a 32-bit edition of Windows 8 pre-installed. I will not be reviewing the pros and cons of the OS, just the hardware.

INTRODUCTION:

HP's new Envy x2 hybrid is a tablet masquerading as a laptop, not the other way around. It has a tablet specs (processor, ram, storage) so don't go thinking this is a high powered laptop that will run your latest online multiplayer game. It won't. That's not to say the Envy has no entertainment value because it runs videos and casual games quite competently. I personally think the tradeoff is worthwhile because it makes the Envy light weight, highly portable, and above all, it has a long long battery life.

For the purposes of my review, I will be referring to the Envy's two distinct parts: the tablet side, and the keyboard side.

PROCESSOR, RAM, GRAPHICS:

The Envy x2 has an Intel Atom Z2760 CPU clocked at 1.80GHz and 2GB of 533MHz LPDDR2 SDRAM (not upgradable). It has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (integrated). I find my programs and apps run really well. I'm running MS Office 2003 without a hitch (my primary use for a laptop) plus a number of casual games and apps purchased from Amazon and the Windows Store. Everything runs great.

TOUCH SCREEN:

I find it sensitive and responsive; very nice, no complaints. There is a NFC area in the upper center of the screen. I don't have any NFC devices so I can't test this. This beautiful widescreen LED backlit display runs in a native resolution 1366x 768 @60p Hz.

CONNECTIVITY:

The Envy x2 has a Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n wireless SDIO adapter for WiFi. I have a dual-band wireless-N router, and the Envy x2 is capable of connecting to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz band. I use the 5Ghz band and I haven't had a problem connecting or staying connected. It is also Bluetooth compatible and (as mentioned) has a NFC area in the top center of the screen.

KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD:

The Envy features a full size keyboard with chiclet style flat keys. They have a nice tactile feel and sound when typing. I did initially have a bit of an issue with the keyboard which has been fixed with a BIOS update from HP. I recommend this update if you have the extra space/repeated last letter keyboard issue.

The docking mechanism works really well. The tablet/screen is magnetically guided into place and so there's no fiddling around trying to find the correct position. It's super easy to pop off and re-dock.

Since my main use is writing, I also found it convenient to turn off the Synaptic touchpad by double tapping the square in the top left corner (toggle) to avoid accidentally moving my cursor when my thumbs grazed the surface. I just plug in a wireless mouse and use that instead.

STORAGE & DRIVES:

The 64GB solid state drive makes the Envy zippy. While 64GB doesn't sound like much storage, there are two additional SD slots for expansion--a micro SD slot in the tablet side, and a standard SD slot in the keyboard side. I purchased a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A) (so it's usable in either slot) which I installed in the tablet side so I can undock without losing any storage. I'll purchase another for the keyboard side if and when I need it.

Roughly 10GB of the 64GB SSD is set aside as a recovery drive. You can reclaim this space once you make a recovery flash drive. HP includes the app needed to make a recovery drive; all I needed to do was supply the 16GB USB flash drive. At the end of the process, I was given a choice to reclaim the recovery partition as useable space. I recommend making the recovery drive even if you don't reclaim the partition, so that you have an independent backup of the factory default OS should you ever need it. Of course, there's an option to purchase this directly from HP, but expect to pay $$$ plus tax and shipping. Making your own, while your recovery partition is in good nick, is a much cheaper option.

There is no optical drive in the Envy, but if you have, or purchase, a USB DVD drive like the AmazonBasics USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (Black) then you can load your older software and compatible games.

The Envy has two batteries, which makes for an incredibly long battery life. It is also designed to drain from the keyboard side first, so if (after using it all day) you decide to undock and take the tablet, you (hopefully) don't have to recharge first. Neat idea! I find I only have to recharge every 2nd day, and that's after a full day of using Word.

OTHER:

The Envy has a really nice brushed aluminum shell, which gives it a really classy look and feel. It's also a very thin computer for in a backpack or book bag, and ultra lightweight while still maintaining a huge 11.6" screen. As mentioned, the Envy comes with a full version of Windows 8 pre-installed, meaning most of my older software will run. This is a big plus for me.

The power brick is tiny, measuring only 3.25" x 1.5" x 1" approx. This is a nice for when you need to take it with you.

IN CONCLUSION:

If you're after a laptop for high powered apps and games, then the Envy x2 probably won't fit your needs. However, if you're after something that has the convenience and portability of a tablet but the functionality of a laptop, then the Envy x2 might just fit the bill. Yes, you might get more bang for your buck by lugging around a traditional heavy i3 or i5 laptop, but for me, the lighter weight, 12+ hours of battery life, in an easily transported compact shell makes the HP Envy x2 my ideal choice.

If you have heavy processing needs or more challenging applications, you're going to want to continue to utilize your other devices. But, that said, this portable unit does show great flexibility in its ability to adapt to the more routine tasks that you may need to perform on-the-go. As with any convertible laptop, this comes in two distinct parts. The screen contains most of the "brains" necessary to fuel regular tablet functions, so you can just unclip it and take it on the road. However if you need standard keyboard or mouse functionality, just connect it back up and you're ready for computer operations.

Windows 8: One of the successes of the HP Envy x2 11-g010nr 11.6-Inch Convertible Laptop is in its usage of Windows 8. If you are a die-hard Windows user, you know that the programs can be somewhat problematic on touch screen devices. There is, oftentimes, too much going on to be wholly effective. Most, therefore, use the less impressive Windows RT technology. So the ability to run any Windows software (unlike the pale shades of RT) is an attractive selling point.

Graphics/Display: The graphics and clarity are perfectly serviceable, if not somewhat better than expected with a HD, Anti-glare, LED-backlit IPS display is powered by Intel Graphics Media Accelerator technology. Once again, this is not meant to stand up to intensive gaming but is suitable for common usage including casual games and HD video.

Compatibility/Additions: The unit has two USB 2.0 ports, a built-in card reader, and a HDMI port. With these, you can customize your experience with external storage or connect to larger monitors depending on your needs. It is Bluetooth compatible and has Wireless network access. And there are headphone/microphone jacks. The unit comes with a front facing camera good for chat (HP TrueVision 1080p HD webcam) and a rear facing camera for specialized tasks (8.0MP). The audio speakers are surprisingly solid Beats.

Design: The HP Envy x2 11-g010nr 11.6-Inch Convertible Laptop comes in a lightweight Brushed Aluminum case. All together, it's about 3 pounds.

Processing Power/Storage: The device is powered by an Intel Atom Z2760 processor which is a 1.8 GHz, dual core unit. This is fairly comparable to what you'd find in other tablets. There are 2GB on on-board RAM and 64GB SSD. While this is probably more than enough for most users, there is no way to upgrade or customize the 2GB RAM with additions.

Battery: The tablet has a battery which boasts about 7 hours of usage. The base, however, also has a battery. When attached, the usage extends to about 12 hours. The double battery really makes a nice difference.

As a Windows user, I really do like the HP Envy x2 11-g010nr 11.6-Inch Convertible Laptop. If that Windows functionality is NOT of major import to you, you might find less expensive alternatives that better serve your wants and needs. But overall, I think this is an incredibly successful marriage of laptop and tablet. When I'm on the road working for any length of time, I still take my more powerful laptop as it is my LIFE. I bought mine from Microsoft Store, but i researched using Amazon so I thought I would review here. I spent roughly the last three months researching for a win 8 tablet with good battery life, light weight, can run full win 8 to handle work applications and could go in tablet mode when I want to just surf or watch a movie--and not cost $1000 or more. I bought other competitors from Acer, Samsung, and Microsoft and they all had something glaringly wrong with them that would drive me crazy (weight, price, hardware issues, weird docking solutions). This tablet has so far met all my expectations. I don't expect it to run call of duty or Photoshop. I expect it to run office programs, adobe acrobat pro, my online work programs, email, surf the internet. I have not experienced any of the issues some other reviewers have--my experience has been nothing but positive. I am a long, long user of Microsoft products (try loading windows using 11 floppy discs!!) and win 8 is definitely the direction for computing. If the surface had been cheaper with a better keyboard and a little lighter I would have kept it.

The hp hardware is superb. Everything works as advertised. The atom processor is not a dog--it runs everything I need smoothly. And there is almost zero heat on this thing--like an iPad with windows 8 on it. Hinge works fine-solid as a rock. Attach and detach easily. No issues with space--I am already pushed out to the cloud. SD cards work perfectly (one on tablet and one on keyboard). Battery life stupidly long.

Win 8 is not as difficult as people make it seem. Once you spend a few hours swiping and figuring out the flow of the OS you will not be able to go back to nothing but a mouse and keys. I have a laptop without a touch screen and I feel crippled not being able to swipe on it. In a couple of years every laptop made will have a touch screen. And everyone complaining about lack of apps--are you kidding me? This is a full blown OS that runs everything that makes your life easier--do what I did and give your iPad to your kid so he can play on it while you can actually work on your tablet and relax during your off time. My two cents.

I was so excited to get this convertible laptop/netbook. If the device didn't have the following issues, I would be very happy with it. However, after 1 week I decided to return it. Here are the issues:

1) Light Bleed Around Screen: The screen had significant 'light bleed' around the edges of the screen. I was sitting in a dark room the first time I turned it on and wow, the light bleed around the edge of the screen was very annoying, especially when watching a movie. Out of curiosity I decided to compare the light bleed to that of an iPad. The iPad had NO noticeable light bleed whatsoever. The screen on this device certainly needs to be manufactured better to avoid the light bleed issue that many complain about.

2) WiFi: Unfortunately the WiFi reception is very poor. This is ultimately the reason I returned the device. I used it with various WiFi routers and could never get it to connect faster than about 30 Mbps. Most of the time it would connect around 5 Mbps. Additionally the signal reception was very poor. Even when sitting within 10 ft of the router, it would only get two bars of reception. I think HP has an antennae design flaw. My other laptops and Windows Phones get great WiFi reception in my home and office.

3) Speakers: I was hoping I could put movies on this for the kids to watch while we are in the car. However, the speakers don't put out nearly enough volume. Without supplemental speakers, it would be way too quiet for use in a car or a room with moderate background noise.

Unfortunately after doing quite a few web searches, I determined that many people have noticed the same issues with this device. Therefore these items must be a result of poor design/fabrication. Therefore, I chose to return it. Hopefully HP fixes these items in next iteration of this device. If they do, I'll be sure to buy it. Windows 8 on a touch device of this form factor would be awesome.

Lenovo Offer's better deal than Amazon.com , Amazon sells very old model of the unit which was manufactured 1 year before . My notebook manufactured date was printed as "2010" which is like old stock to give it to user's / Consumers.

I had trouble registering online warranty due to 2010 Date stamp with Lenovo. Not Worth to buy from Amazon. If Amazon can publish Date of Manf It will be Great.

Lenovo offers better configuration with 8 GB memory for the same price.

I have ordered several of this exact Lenovo laptop and needless to say, I am quite pleased with the overall quality.

The only slight annoyance comes from the large mouse pad my hand often brushes over it and causes the cursor to move from where I had it, but this is something that one can adapt to quite easily.

Bought this to replace a HP laptop with a 14" screen that was about 3 years old. This one has a great processor that's relatively fast, nice size HD and a nice screen. The graphics system could be faster but this isn't a gaming system so I can live with it. It plays streaming videos well without getting too hot like my old HP laptop.

VERY snappy CPU in this thing.

For the price you can not beat this!

I do recommend that you upgrade the ram to 8gb (it has one free slot, so just grab a ddr3 sodimm and you should be fine)

Love this laptop! It's great looking, feels sturdy, and it runs very quiet. The display is beautiful colors are bright and true to life. I even like the touchpad, which is a first for me. For me, it's just responsive enough without being too sensitive. I have not noticed any issues with it getting hot, but I have only had it for 3 days now.

The backlit keyboard feels great very easy to type on, and it's very helpful when working in a not so brightly lit room. The 2nd generation Core i7 processor is really fast. All my programs and applications are ready to use within a minute or so after I turn on the computer.

I had one minor issue after I finished with all the Windows updates (there were about 50 of them). Every time I shut down the computer, it would restart instead of shutting down. It was getting frustrating, so I did some research online. Some suggested that it was a "hardware issue", but one person suggested that it could be that the BIOS needed to be updated. I went to the Dell website, and there was a BIOS update there, along with several driver updates. I downloaded all the updates, and the restarting problem was gone. It's been smooth sailing ever since.

Aanother plus for me, I originally ordered this model (but without the blueray player) from BB because I liked their financing of 18 months with no interest. I ordered online, because it is not an item they carry in the store. Anyway, the item stayed in process for several days after the estimated arrival date with no progress. As I got more and more impatient, I decided to see if Amazon carried that model, or a similar one. Bottom line is, Amazon offers 24-month financing (even better!). Even though the Amazon price was about $100.00 more than the other store, I only wound up paying $20.00 more for an upgraded model, even though I used 1-day shipping, because Amazon does not charge the sales tax sweet!!

This computer is big, gorgeous, fast, doesn't get hot and the fan isn't noisy. The lighted keyboard is wonderful! I haven't bought a computer in a few years and I didn't even realize that was available.

I needed something for making movies, and the Intel i7 handles it just fine.

All I can see is the cursor sign. I can only run it in safe mode, and I haven't even used it that long.

if you're purchasing this laptop because you think it has 3-D will find yourself disappointed. I purchased this laptop after reading that this laptop had 3-D capabilities. I looked it up online and also saw reviews from other people saying 3-D works great. The person who said that as I now know was not telling the truth. While this laptop may have good features there are better laptops with better features for the same price. The catch of this laptop to me was supposed to be 3D abilities. In the description it stated that it has 3-D capabilities. Upon receiving it I saw a button program that said enable 3-D in the control panel that says 3-D management or setting. I thought great maybe I'm misunderstanding some things that it might've been a bit more difficult for me to set up 3D and I'm not understand what's going on. By the way I purchased the nvidia 3-D wireless glasses the thought maybe just maybe I didn't know what I was doing. My brother suggested that since the laptop that I bought from Amazon that it might still have the Dell warrantee and therefore I called Dell to set up my 3-D. I did so I waited a day and called Dell to help me set up my 3-D.

To My Shock!!! Dell representatives personally told me this computer does not have 3-D. I of course immediately called Amazon. Long story short the word capabilities is deceptive. This laptop can have 3-D if it had the right processor and the right screen which it does not. It may be possible to connect it to a 3-D TV and have 3-D but that's not what I bought it for. The nice people at Amazon quickly understood my problem and immediately issued me a refund following the return of the item. Do not purchase this laptop if you want it to have 3-D already on screen. If you had any doubt to what I'm saying simply called Dell give them the model of this computer and hear it straight from them this computer does not come up equip with the ability to support 3-D as it is now.
