I've had the Lenovo U110 now for 1 year. It is light and portable. However, the plastic casing is very flimsy and breaks easily. Recently, I turned it on, but does not stay on. Support is non-existence. Searching forum on the internet for possible solutions is impossible. It seems like nobody owns one. Other than that, the lap top works fine.

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad U110 through Amazon about a year ago, paying about $1,000 for it. It was pre-loaded with Windows Vista, software so bloated and heavy that it couldn't get out of its own way, sometimes taking 3 minutes to boot and over a minute to shutdown. I dumped Vista and loaded XP, and now it comes out of standby in less than 5 seconds and is conneced to my wireless network. At the current price of in excess of $2,000 I would not recommend it. But, if you can score one for around $1,000 and have the means to load XP, it is the incredible.

I bought this laptop just over a year ago. Its been great other then I noticed the hard drive occasional skipping. Noticeable during video playback and slightly moving the laptop. The hard drive finally died just after one year. (Just past the warranty period). Lenovo wanted $305 for a replacement 120gb 1.8in hard drive plus $49 processing and a mandatory $10 for the recovery disk (that I don't need) $365 for a 120gig hard drive. After hours on the phone with them and several diff customer service areas They had no alternatives. Im just going to junk the thing and buy a diff laptop...... Im never buying Lenovo ever again... bad company experience

I bought this laptop on 14-June-2013. It works very well, and I'm very happy with it. As for the complaints from others:

1) The volume up and down buttons work just fine... if you understand that you must hold down the blue function key while pressing volume up (F11) and volume down (F12). If you don't press the blue function key, you're just pressing the F11 and F12 keys. Also, you do not need to press the function key in order to activate (and deactivate) the mute button.

2) The fan noise can be fixed in (literally) two minutes by going to the Dell website, and in their search box type "Fans spinning High, Excessive Fan Noise A06 Bios Update Fix". You will be directed to Dell Article ID: 597270. Scroll down and click on "Insp 3721 3721A06" to download the executable file which will update your BIOS from A05 to A06. Run the executable file and presto, fan noise fixed forever.

I'm writing this review from my moms account because she got it for me for graduation! I love this laptop so much, the screen is huge the keyboard is well placed as is the touch pad. The sound quality is great, i love listening to music while i study. at first I was iffy about Windows 8 but now I am extremely impressed with it. The battery life is not super amazing but honestly I can't complain. The texture makes oily fingerprints show up more than I'd like but it is very easy to clean. Everything runs super fast, the screen resolution is nice and the web cam is clear and not too pixlated. I'm super happy with this product and suggest it for anyone going into college or just having it for entertainment :)

As previously stated the volume buttons do not work. Ironically mute works just fine. I called Dell and of course they tried to hit me with a $299.99 fee to fix that problem and others that they found on my day old computer. I'm disappointed to say the least.

I contacted the seller regarding this laptop in advance to make sure it did, in fact, come with a webcam, and when it arrived; everything was as expected. Packaged in OEM Dell boxes I was quite happy.

To greatly improve performance, I'd recommend pulling the 2gb ram out and replacing with 8gb (2x4gb) or 16gb (2x8gb) of ram; it really will make a big difference with the I3 processor...

For the price; can't really beat it for a NEW system.

I got this last year as a Black Friday special and never really got it going until after Christmas. It has been nothing but a slow computer, poor customer service from Gateway, and an overall money pit to try to get it running. It has been "in the shop" more than working! Each time, I had to debate wheterh it may be more cost effective to suck up the loss and just get a new computer. Luckily I have a sister-in-law who has helped me out tremedously with taking the time to call for the horrible customer service from Gateway. It is noisy, it overheats easily-to the reviewer who said to get a cooling pad--this would be the only laptop I have every needed one for! It oculd double as a space heater! Sad, it was my first and likely last Gateway computer.

I would give this laptop a few starts if it wasn't for the customer service I just received. They have to be the WORST when it comes to getting support. Spent 3 hours online with them chatting then they tell me I have to buy a recovery cd in order to restore. Umm did I not purchase a license when I bought the laptop, why do I have to now pay for a restore cd. And why wasn't one included. Battery is bad. Power cable doesn't work. Plugged in another power cable from another laptop and that turned the darn thing on but isn't charging the battery. DO NOT BUY>

OK YES it does have an overheating problem, use a cooling pad or reduce the brightness on your screen and you will be fine. It shuts does by itself only if it is overheating, and boy is that a good thing, otherwise you would end up with a melted laptop.... So once you get the hang of how to control the overheating issue, it is a great laptop, especially for the price, I paid $340 NIB. Good specs, fast, versatile, webcam is great, shortcuts are nice, will need a memory upgrade if you run multiple programs like I do, but at max it was handling a virtual environment with photoshop pro running and multiple browsers up on the actual environment, all at the same time, not too shabby. No other problems thus far (12 months). Oh and the battery will last about 2 hours, you can play with your power settings to get it to last longer, or just get another battery......

I haven't had any of the problems some folks have been mentioning, except for the overheating and the battery life. Performance wise, this machine has suited my needs: music shuffling back and forth with an iphone, lots of internet, simultaneous running of many programs. The display is sharp and it's quite fast for a stock machine.

But, back to the heat problem. Apparently, Gateway (or whoever they used to build it) designed a heat sink that actually retains the heat rather than dissipates it. This is bad. Shutting down without warning is also bad. Sometimes very bad. I've been trying to determine a way to fix it or at least find some sort of software that would at least give warning when it's getting too hot but after about a year, I've pretty much given up. I keep finding folks who say the fan is broken probably or there's lots of dust. Neither of these is true. Still using it, but thinking about going back to a desktop for home use and just having my iphone, or maybe a tablet... or... a Mac if I come into lots of extra money.

I love the laptop. It's small and super light weight. The web camera is really good. The laptop is very fast. The design is awesome!

The laptop has worked well for me, but has has a design flaw in the hinges. The monitor hinge has failed 2 times and I have had to wait 1 month each time while the unit was at HP for repair. The third time the piece of plastic that the base of the hinge attaches to separated from the rest of the computer. The hinge does not directly connect into the chassis, but is connected only to a 2"X2" piece of plastic that is held in place only by plastic tabs. HP offers no option but at third repair trip.

I would return this unit if possible because of the hinge issue.

I purchased the HP Pavilion dm1-4210us 11.6-Inch Laptop to use while traveling. My HP Pavilion p6-2108p Desktop remains my primary PC and I also consider the dm1-4210us to be a back-up to it because it has a 500GB HD. The HP dm1-4210us is a very nice little laptop; I wanted something small enough to watch my own movies/listen to my music on a plane or in a hotel, light and easy to carry and good to check e-mail. This laptop fits the bill. My most serious complaint is the built-in speakers. The HP BEATS audio hype led me to expect some pretty good sound but these speakers are just too small to deliver. I guess that's why they sell the BEATS headphones. I'm going to make do with some headphones and a set of portable speakers. I also wish manuals were included in the box; I don't like printing out 40+ pages at home. Other than that, I am still trying to figure out my battery life. Initially, the indicators said I had about 4 hrs of battery life, considerably short of the 7 advertised and my expectations of 5-6 hrs. Today I found I had over 5 hrs of battery life indicated, more in line with what I expect. The touchpad is a bit tricky but not a problem after a short while. I did buy a wireless mouse to use when space permits but I'll be OK without it. I'm really happy with my HP Pavilion dm1-4210us and can highly recommend it.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS 2 MONTHS IN: I'm still happy with my purchase but concerns about speed have cropped up. The dm-1 was taking a while to boot up until I got ruthless about start-up programs. It can also be slow responding while web-surfing if too many background programs are running. A key to this laptop is getting it set-up properly. The HP external speakers make a big difference in the sound quality. I really like the HDMI output to put my movies on my 32" TV.

Right out of the gate, this has been an impressive laptop. No, it's not an ultrabook, but it's reasonably light, at 4.4 lbs. It also has features, like a DVD reader/burner, full size HDMI port, etc., that are lacking on many budget notebooks these days.

Pros:

*Fast. Very fast. It's an i7 chipset, and it truly flies through most tasks.

*8 GB of RAM, straight out of the box. What a joy, not having to deal with upgrading.

*One of the best keyboards of this style that I've ever used. Nice feedback, responsive, and easy to type on (I so wish I had the same keyboard on my much more expensive U31)

*While not the fastest, the hard drive is huge. 1TB is almost unprecedented for a laptop.

*Great fit and finish. Everything feels solid, the screen hinges really grab (sadly lacking in many notebooks), no wobble from the screen when it's up. This is not a delicate flower of a notebook -it's solid and substantial.

*Good port selection, including a pair of USB 3 ports. No VGA, but full-sized HDMI. Wired Ethernet.

*Backlit Keyboard w/adjustable brightness.

*Surprisingly good sound from front-firing speakers.

*ASUS Instant-On works flawlessly. Boots from sleep in seconds. (Boot from shutdown takes much longer, since the drive is not SSD, but you won't use it often. It can sleep for a month on a full charge.)

*It's quiet. I mean, really quiet, even under a load. Processor is so powerful that the fan almost never needs to run, and when it does, it's a whisper. Huge kudos to ASUS on this. It has never gotten hot on me, even transcoding video. Oh, and the exhaust is on the side, thankfully.

Cons:

*Mousepad, while solid, is a bit too stiff as a clickpad, and a bit too sensitive when tapping. However, my guess is that the clickpad will loosen-up in time. It is, however, responsive and accurate.

*Screen is the standard 1366x768 LED backlit, which is fine, but it's calibrated horribly from the factory. You need patience to get it adjusted properly. Obviously not a retina display, but, as a plus, it's non-glare, and easy in any light.

*You WILL NEED to update the BIOS immediately, to version 410 or above. Mine came with 407, and suffered lockups until I did. Fortunately, in this day and age it isn't too hard to do, but if you're not tech oriented it might be a hassle.

*Standard bloatware, including the completely unnecessary McAfee anti-virus, and some other things. Not horrible, but you'll have a bunch to get rid of.

I know there are a lot of folks ranting about Windows 8, and this is my first machine with it installed. Took a bit to get the lay of the land, but honestly, within a day I had no problems with it. Actually, I see little difference between it and Win7, once you're in desktop mode (which is where you automatically wind up most of the time anyway). Sure, there are some quirks, and new ways to do things, but so it goes. Anyhow, I'm not rating Win 8, I'm rating the hardware.

Overall, I can highly recommend this laptop. No, it's not the sleekest or fanciest. No, it's not a touchscreen. It is, however, incredibly powerful and fast for the price, and the build quality is top notch.

A WOW Laptop!

This Asus U47A is one of the finest computers I've ever owned. It's only a day old as of this writing and have yet to find anything about it I don't like. The jury is still out about the Win 8 OS, but that has nothing to do with the laptop. More on that later.

I share a previous reviewer's comments (D.M. Seeley) about the pros. I only want to add a few things to what was already covered:

The Good:

*With the i7 chipset, this machine screams!

*The 8 GB or RAM will enable the user to open just about any program that exists or have several RAM intensive programs open simultaneously.

My Windows Experience Index is as follows: Overall5.9

Processor: 7.7

Memory: 7.8

Graphics: 6.5

Gaming graphics: 6.5

Primary hard disk: 5.9

Since the Index is based on the lowest number, the addition of an SSD will boost the overall score up to 6.5. The 1TB HHD supplied on this laptop spins at only 5400 rpm hence the low reading.

*The fit and finish on this laptop is simply awesome. It reminds me of a race car that looks fast just standing still!

The Not So Good:

As said by D.M. Seeley, the bios needs to be updated right out of the box. Mine came with v. 4.7 and the latest is v.4.10. It's not terribly difficult to do but advise using Google and Youtube to get comfortable with the procedure.

This has nothing to do with Asus, but Windows 8 isn't compatible with POP3 mail. There's a work around for this but not without having to jump through many hoops. So, at this point, my favorite email client won't work but I can simply log on to my ISP's website to retrieve and send mail. If you opt to use Windows Mail, Outlook,or any of the web-based email programs no problems.

I highly suggest you download an excellent program by Soluto (soluto.com) after you finish deleting the usual bloatware from this machine. Soluto can tell you which applications are necessary and which aren't. It also gives you some very helpful information about your machine, too. Also, startup can be speeded up if you delay the loading of some of the necessary programs. I much prefer using Soluto as opposed to "msconfig."

When researching the U47A on the internet, it was suggested to uninstall Asus Live Update before connecting to the internet for the first time. Uninstalling this will keep the laptop from downloading the "USB Charger Plus" program which sometimes disables all the USB ports. Since I don't charge things from my computer, I don't need this program to begin with.

Some people have mentioned having wireless issues due to the Wireless Console 3 which I also disabled.

The above mentioned issues were never really issues with me, so your mileage may vary. Deleting or disabling certain things will hopefully keep future issues at bay.

All that being said, I highly, highly recommend this machine! Asus makes quality stuff and it's very apparent with this laptop. No matter what machine you ultimately buy, there's always a bit of tweaking to do. There was much less to do with the U47A than any other computer I've ever had. Three thumbs up, ASUS!

I purchased this laptop last week and I am very pleased with it. It's portable, fast, and fully equipped with everything I needed. I wanted an optical drive, 14 inch screen, and much more. It also has a back-lit keyboard.

I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a laptop with Windows 8 but I actually adjusted today in no time. I decided to download Classic Shell so that I could easily see the famous "start menu." The other plus to downloading Classic Shell was that the "Tiles Start Up Screen" is totally bypassed in Windows 8 and goes directly to my desktop. Therefore, I really don't have to deal with the nuisance "Tile Screen" if I don't want to.

Overall, this is a good budget friendly laptop equipped with the average necessities of a home user.

Perfect screen and keyboard size.

It is fast, but lags. Has Windows 7 on board and all bloatware removed.

Cons:

Touchpad is not working properly. Cursor jumps around the screen.

This is hardware problem. Cannot be fixed with drivers update.

Asus should recall laptops with faulty touchpads.

To fix it, you will need to remove aluminum foil under the touchpad, but I was not able to disassemble it. It looks like I have to break mounting clips around the edges.

Description:

This is a superb sub $1,500 laptop. The video card (Nvidia GTX 660, 2GB) is better than the one in the 15" Macbook Pro w/Retina (Nvidia GT 650, 1GB) -shame on you Apple -and the processor is also amazing. The screen is also nice, but as other have pointed out, it's nothing special. Mine came with a dead pixel, which I was pretty upset about, but it eventually went away with the use of free software.

I am able to edit videos without any problem using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and editing photos is also a breeze. Using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other programs for creating and publishing content also works very well. Frankly, this is a better buy over any Macbook.

The design isn't something I was too excited about when looking at the pictures but in person it's actually not that bad. I prefer the sleek look of the Macbook Pros, but the price tag and increased performance this laptop gives me is worth more than its looks.

Upgradeability is an important factor in this laptop. You can upgrade it from 8GB RAM to 16GB which I plan on doing, as well as adding a mSSD for caching purposes (for even faster performance) and, potentially, replacing the CD/DVD drive with a HDD bay. We'll see.

Bottom line:

Get this laptop if you want a large but powerful gaming/video editing laptop. Not for people who want ultra portability and long battery life.

Has the mSATA slot, Full HD 1920X1080p screen and a WD Black 7200rpm HDD. When I was looking at buying a laptop I read a lot of reviews about this and other similar laptops. I couldn't find a definite answer whether this particular model had the mSATA or not. It does. The procedure to migrate is pretty simple. This comes with the MSI BurnRecovery software which makes recovery DVD's that restores your HDD image. I needed 5 DVD-R's to do this. After I made those I removed the stock HDD (Western Digital Black 7200rpm) and installed a Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT120GB-DX mSATA 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) drive. Need to find a screw to secure the mSATA because the drive does not come with one and you cannot install without it. It's the same screw that would secure a mini card like a wireless card, modem or Bluetooth. Important!-Get into the bios by pressing Del when the MSI logo pops up and disable the secure boot option in the Bios. Booted from the recovery DVD's and restored the image to the mSATA drive. This puts 5 partitions onto that drive-EFI boot sector, Windows recovery, OS partition, Data partition and Recovery partition. Opened computer management after reboot and removed the data partition. I also removed the recovery partition which is about 17 GB because I have the backup DVD's. Extend the OS partition to the unallocated space. This gives you about 100GB for your OS. Get back into the Bios and enable the secure boot option again and boot into your OS. Shut down, reinstall the HDD and reboot. Go to Settings, Change PC Settings, General and select Advanced Startup. When it restarts get to the command prompt. Type in "DISKPART", enter, "list disk", enter. Find the disk that is 698GB (should be disk 0) then type in "select disk 0", enter, "clean", enter, "Y" because yes you are sure you want to wipe the drive. Reboot, get into computer management, activate disk and make the partitions you want. I moved all of the library file folders to the single "Data" partition I made on that drive. Music, Videos, Documents and Downloads. Installed 'most' programs on the OS drive and still have about 20GB left. Takes seconds to boot now with no stability issues at all.

A lot of reviews say this laptop is a little flimsy or fragile and does not seem durable. If you live your life with a broken screen on your cell phone I would not recommend this laptop for you. It is, however, thin and light which is why I chose this particular one. Take care of your stuff and it will last! If not, buy the extended warranty. You cannot set up the mSATA as a Cache drive on this laptop due to the Bios not being able to create a RAID array so a 32GB or 64GB mSATA purchase will result in nothing but hate and discontent because you will only get 32 or 64GB of additional storage out of it. Or, a compacted Windows install with the need to buy aftermarket file management software to store system and program files on the Data drive. If you do this and have to wait for the transfer rate of the spin drive what is point of going to mSATA in the first place?

I've had this for about a month now and love it. When I bought this I also bought the mSATA drive and 16GB of ram (this is manufacturers limit) G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ the entire process to do the upgrades took me about two weeks because there isn't much info on migrating the OS without an OEM Windows install disk or some software that doesn't work because of the EFI partitions. I refused to buy another OS when the laptop I just bought has one. There is very little bloatware on this laptop, MS Office setup, MSI BurnRecovery, Battery Calibration and SuperCharger. That's about it. No additional toolbars or ads as you would get with other manufacturers. If you duplicate my procedure the process should take you no more than an hour or two unless you have already put your own stuff on the laptop. In that case you just have to back up your files and then put them back on when you wipe the drive. If you don't want to wipe the drive you can just delete the OS partition but then you end up with dynamic instead of a basic partition because when you extend your Data partition you extend it to the left instead of the right. One last item-performance and graphics. I use this to play WoW and I have the graphics set to Ultra settings. The lowest frame rate I recall seeing is 27fps but definitely no performance issues even at the ultra setting.

PROS:

screen; great colors and viewing angles

noise level; only one fan but surprisingly it stays cool and the fan on "turbo" is audible but the speakers can easily overpower the noise otherwise its lower noise than similar laptops.

gpu; NVidia GTX 660m it runs crisis 2 at ultra(tested without aa on)

cpu; i7 nuf said

CONS:

multitouch pad; is rocker style and stiff seems to be breaking in after a solid day though

keyboards not backlit (not really a con; just would be nice)

no dedicated volume control; surprisingly a larger issue than I originally thought.. its fn+left/right or through software

notes:

it came with a corrupted wifi driver and usb ports didn't work properly:

the drivers disk it came with was also corrupted so I had to use a lifeline from my old laptop to get it working.

once I got the bios and drivers updated and working it was fine and it runs fast. I tested crysis the game wanted "gamer" specs for some reasion but it ran at 60fps (as the overclock drivers should) on "Ultra" and it was barley warm after 1 hour of game time.(i had the fan Turbo on)

worth mentioning:

windows score sets the gpu score at 5.4, however this is just a bug in how windows defaults the GPU on the i7 instead of the dedicated Nvidia GTX 660m.

supports 16gb ram upgrade and an empty mSATA bay(not to be confused with a SATA bay)

This computer has all the specs of a real gaming laptop quad-core i7, nVidia 660m, 8 gb ram, etc.

So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I took it out of the box and it took 10-15 minutes to boot up, ran programs slowly, and continuously maxed out hard drive access. Not only that, windows update didn't work, system tools didn't work and it was 10-15 minutes to reboot or shut down.

After a few fits of rage about windows 8, the poor decisions of MSI engineers and a little soul-searching, I relented and actually began trying to solve the problem. A few hours of research later and I found the needle in the haystack thread that had my solution.

The thread also contains a number of other things you can try to correct performance problems or other issues with the Windows 8 preinstallation image. A key command to try in the command prompt is "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

Three days and sleepless nights later, the laptop is now running "as it should," for a machine with its resume. Booting in just a few seconds, running games like the Witcher 2 at just about max settings, handling multi-tasking taboos like installing and running a game simultaneously, with ease.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this is going to be an awesome laptop that will last me several years, as I originally intended.

Had the laptop come out of the box as it is running now, this review would have been five stars all the way. I chose four stars even though it should have been three, because it is still awesome despite of all the heartburn and the fact that some users may not be able to figure out the problems with the machine.

Sometimes the touch pad won't work no matter what I do. And it's not that it's turned off, it just stops working. I can maybe move it across the screen but not up or down. Windows 8 is a disaster, I can't find anything, my printer software won't work with it and my camera is forced to use a windows program because my digital camera software isn't supported.

I liked the ATIV Book 5 enough that when I had to return it because of a minor issue I got a replacement rather than a different laptop. (Hats off to Amazon for remarkable service; they sent me a new one even before I returned the old one, so that I wasn't without a computer.) This unit has an excellent keyboard and touch pad, plus good battery life. It's also speedy and the build quality seems good. On the negative side, the screen is not as crisp as some others--look elsewhere if you're a video fanatic--and the black finish is a real fingerprint magnet. It's reasonably nice looking but not as cool as other Samsung laptops.

I bought this computer to replace my old acer netbook and I have been pleasantly surprised by how wonderful this Samsung computer is. I like the 14 inch size, it's not too big or too small but perfect for my needs. The computer is very very light and is also extremely fast. I looked for a touch screen computer that was not too expensive or too heavy and I read a lot of reviews before I chose this one. I am happy that I decided to go for this ultrabook laptop. Although I paid less than $800 for it the computer looks and feels like a high end laptop. I like the great finish, big keyboard, great speakers and the battery lasts for a long long time. Even windows 8 does not feel as bad as other reviewers have said.

Very slim, light ideal for someone who travels lots. with window 8 the touch screen option on this machine make it very easy to navigate through the tiles.

I am having a hard time getting from one place to another. If I stop what I am doing for more than 10 minutes to answer my phone, I have to sign in and look for what I have been working on. I use Quicken for our finance. I purchased a new Windows 8 Quicken but having trouble transferring information from old quicken.

Documents storage is getting hard to get use to. My Microsoft Office which I have been updating will not transfer. To use office I have to download new software and pay an arm an a leg to use on more than one computer and was told I would have to pay each year to keep it upgraded. My husband has a desktop and we both have laptops.

If I had to buy another computer I would not buy Windows 8.

My old Dell with Windows XP is so slow, however I find my self being glad that I have not given it away.

Reviews of Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-6847 14-Inch HD Display Laptop

First of all, I am a college student. With classes and being on the go about half the time, I wanted a capable machine that would cater my needs gaming on the go, with some power for multitasking and multimedia. I decided to look for a slim and lightweight 13-14 inch laptop over a high end netbook.

So in my search, I looked for the following:

-nice graphics

-good processing power to handle multitasking

-nice battery life when I am not near the wall

-Cosmetics were secondary for me

After much research, I had to decide between the 13.3" Asus U30JC-B1 or the 14" Acer Aspire Timeline X AS4820TG-6847. Before I found out about the Acer, I was going to go for the ASUS. Then I looked further and found the Acer. I was thankful that I did at the time of purchase, the Acer was only $50 more than the ASUS. The Acer was far better on graphics (the ASUS's Nvidia 310M versus the Acer's ATI 6550M, which is really a renamed version of the Mobility Radeon 5650 with minimal differences) and the processor was better as well (i3 370M versus i5 480M). However, the size and battery life was ASUS's win. Both have optical drives (DVD) and switchable graphics to the power-saving Intel HD graphics. After careful consideration, mainly with price, I went for the Acer Aspire.

After having it for a day, I was already very optimistic about my purchase.

*Cosmetics*

It weighed 2 pounds less than my old laptop, the Thinkpad R61i series, and is fairly slimmer and smaller. I do miss the durability build the Thinkpad offered. Honestly, I like the look of the Acer on the outside. However I do worry about the durability, especially of the thin screen. Beware of the fingerprint smears on the outside of the screen, though. Pretty unavoidable, which is slightly irritating. On the inside, the screen looks nice enough. However the keyboard and touchpad aren't impressive. The keyboard does have a nice feel to it when typing and the touchpad is responsive. Note that there is a touchpad button not buttons. However it works okay, just press left side for left clicking and vice versa. Overall, the build wasn't anything that would have me jumping out of my seat, but the laptop looks sleek and stylish.

*Performance on multitasking*

The computer is more than adequate for multitasking and multimedia, which wasn't unexpected but I was still happy to see that. I ran Winamp, Firefox, and AIM running with minimal lag. The only thing that was slowing down was the hard drive, which is a 5400 RPM 640 GB. I would gladly trade for a 7200 RPM hard drive even if I get only half the space. However for a 5400 RPM hard drive, the laptop boots and responds well enough. Laptop maintains appropriate temperatures, at least for my laptop. It gets warm from time to time, but the fan does a good job in keeping the laptop cool as possible.

*Battery Life*

Then the battery life test. Doing surfing, listening to music, making recovery discs, and running on balanced settings (and most importantly, not using the Radeon graphics) I yielded about 4-5 hours usage before I needed the plug. Considering what was going on during the battery drainage that was pretty impressive to me my Thinkpad can barely last 2-3 hours on similar battery settings when I first had it. I assume that the advertised 8 hour battery life must be attained when the laptop is barely doing anything at power saver with the DVD drive powered off. I only had the laptop for a day, so I will do more tests and update if necessary.

*Gaming graphics*

Then comes the more interesting test to me the gaming. I first installed Dragon Age Origins to the laptop, and imported the settings and saved files from the desktop to the laptop. I did some adjustments as I played in various parts of the game that would make the graphics card work hard. I found that I can run a 1280 x 768 screen with high settings, no AA with little to no problems. Sounds good. Then I installed Starcraft 2. After some tests, I found myself playing at custom settings (mostly medium with high settings on textures and movies) with 1280 x 720 resolution. I was merely testing from the single player campaign though, but there were little problems. Those were the only games I tested so far, but I might do some more testing if necessary. For now though, the graphics appear to be very good for budget gaming. WARNING though the laptop does get hot when gaming for a considerable time, especially for Starcraft 2. Be sure to have a cooling pad to minimize any potential damage done to the laptop in the long term.

*Other facts to point out*

The Acer Aspire operates with Windows 7, 64 bit. Windows 7 has worked wonders unlike Vista, so that and the fact that it's a 64 bit version was a big plus for me.

The webcam is 1.3 megapixel with a max resolution of 1280 x 1024. It's an improvement to the Logtech webcam I used on the desktop, which was only up to 640 x 480 and was probably 0.3 megapixel (forgot the specs). The webcam and microphone all work, so that's good.

The speakers are nice and small, but are not really worth writing home about.

There is a VGA and HDMI port, 4 USB 2.0 ports, and 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN connection. The 802.11b/g/n WLAN works well to connect wireless networks. There are no Firewire port, PC Card or Expresscard, or USB 3.0. However, considering the price for this laptop and the other specs it's not really a surprise.

Card reader and DVD drive works as advertised. Note that for the DVD drive the button to eject is on the right corner of the keyboard next to the speakers and not on the side of the laptop like many laptops. Not much of a pro or con for me.

Overall, the Acer Aspire laptop has nice specs with a smashing good price. This is a great budget gaming laptop, with a pretty strong discrete graphics card, an i5 CPU, and plenty of HD space. There are some things the laptop can improve on, but you really cannot argue the price. Recommended buy!

This laptop runs like a friggin dream.

After playing L4D2 for an hour the temps remained around low 60ish and that blew me away. Considering my old gateway went above 90 celsius after such a session. Not to mention the superior performance compared to that of my gateway.

The laptop is really well built. The screen and body of the keyboard can be flexed since the system is so thin, but you would have to grab it awkwardly and do it on purpose without care to actually give it a hefty flex. Otherwise, I'm sold to this system, and the build quality is top notch. The middle of the keyboard can be flexed down, but when I type on it, it feels pretty solid so it's not an issue at all.

One con I can point out is how absurdly glossy it is. Then again, every laptop now a days seem to follow such an unfortunate trend. If the next iteration of the TimelineX series fixes the two minor issues above, then that is probably going to be the best laptop ever.

Few notes.

-The hinges on the laptop cover to body seem rather thin and unsupported. I don't know how long it will last, but judging from veteran owners, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

-The speakers on this is pretty bad. It's tolerable if you're justing letting music play in the background, but otherwise for serious listeners, it's poor. Good thing I have good in-ear monitors. :)

-Lots of bloatware, so either do a fresh install or get ready to do a lot uninstalling.

I'm writing this review using that computer (that just arrived to my door). My friend (an audiophile that likes Acer products as well) helped me to test it as well, but it is just a first-sight impression. I can't say if it is robust because I didn't take it in my backpack and made a subway ride, for example. But let's try it.

This computer is light and slim. I just compared it to a Dell Latitude E5410 the width and height are almost the same, but it is slimmer and lighter (but the Dell one is also sturdier, and the equivalent customized Dell computer costs between 849.00 and 1009.00 as well). It is black (brushed metal) and the palm rest inside is dark gray (brushed metal as well resembles the titanium color).

Some things were to be done in order to made it lighter and cheaper. The first one is the lid is very thin but slightly flexible it is made of brushed metal, but a very thin one. Fortunately, the optical drive wasn't taken off this computer (but the AS3820 has no optical drive). It adds some weight to the computer, but avoids to carry a portable DVD reader everywhere. I know a lot of people that have such computers without DVD drives that walk with USB DVD readers "just for case" although it is rarely necessary in practice, if you really need one, you are out of luck.

The second one is that several ports and switches were left out there is no Bluetooth, no wireless switch (you need to hit Fn-F3 instead), no Firewire, no ExpressCard slot, no eSATAp and no USB 3.0 ports. There is a 4th USB 2.0 instead it is difficult to find a 4th USB port, even in 17" computers, so it is a real bonus.

There is a real HDMI port, and it works nicely with DVD films (just don't forget to set correctly the audio output before playing your video it isn't automatic, but even MacBooks are not automatic). Don't forget to use the correct video output (if you're using the HDMI port) using the Fn-F5 key combination.

The keyboard is comfortable it resembles my old FZ-series VAIO but it is more noisy I like noisy keyboards, but there is a lot of people that hates noisy keyboards. It is not back-lit but lighting just drain batteries :) There is no numeric keyboard but I prefer larger keys than a numeric keyboard in a notebook this size I hate to use that 15.3" notebooks that have small keys and numeric keyboards.

This computer has a 640GB, 5400RPM drive. It could have a 500GB, 7200RPM drive like the Dell I mentioned before or better yet, a Seagate XT hybrid drive or something like that. Hybrid drives help the battery life, and aren't that expensive. But I know that spacier drives sell better than quicker ones :) so Acer had chosen to use a spacier one (a good drive in my machine: a Western Digital WD6400BEVT, that has ShockGuard and SecurePark technologies. But it is left to the discretion of the manufacturer maybe your machine could have a Toshiba or a Hitachi drive instead.)

My friend says that the sound from the speakers is good for a laptop this size (the speakers are small but don't sound like a toy); I have to test it with good headphones as well. It could be a bonus for someone that uses the speakers for a Skype or a MSN conversation.

The touch-pad is acceptable as well (it is multi-touch) and can be turned off with Fn-F7.

Tested a SDHC card and it was correctly read. I have no SDXC or MMC cards but the manufacturer says that SDXC cards can be read as well. It has a spring (you know that the card was correctly inserted because the spring locks it in the computer) and a dummy card (I am paranoid about dummy cards. I guess I will lose that dummy card in the first week. But dummy cards help to avoid getting a lot of dirty balls inside the computer.)

I have to find out a N wi-fi network (I am using the B wi-fi network of my hotel, that sports only 11Mbps) in order to check if the Broadcom card is correctly getting 300 Mbps as advertised in N wi-fi networks.

It has a Gigabit (Atheros) wired network port as well.

I give it 4 stars because it could have USB 3.0 and eSATAp ports and a Bluetooth connections, or even a BluRay drive. But if it helps to save battery, I am glad to forgive such things (I never used Firewire or modem ports in any of my notebooks :) but Bluetooth is good for keeping my mobile phones synchronized. ) .

The price is right for such a new release (I have seen an advertisement of this machine in a recent Wired magazine, I believe).

The price includes the Radeon 6550M and the additional 1GB video memory.

Update (2/28/2011) Now I have this machine for almost 3 weeks and I can say that:

The price dropped a lot (it's now $ 729) and it makes it a true bargain I really liked this machine.

The keyboard has some problems for people that just use too much force in typing as me. The '1' key get slightly stuck but it is behaving better now that I promised it to hit it more softly :) Now it is only the "Del" key that has some problems...

Battery life is not exactly 8 hours as advertised but it is very good (5 hours for common use like surfing the web and listening to music.) (Maybe if I turned off the antivirus the battery life could be better and reach the advertised 8 hours :) )

Something is misconfigured in my Vaio quad-core i7 so I can say that in common use, this Acer (although being only a humble dual-core i5, not a quad-core i7) is faster than that Vaio :) . Obviously it is not a scientific, proved thing: SiSoftware Sandra says me that the i7 is really faster than the i5. Maybe removing all bloatware of the Vaio could help somewhat :)

This machine runs very cold, compared to all that machines I had before so I can't use it for heating my bed in a cold hotel :).

So I raise my note to 4.5 (not exactly 5 due to the keyboard problems).

After 4 years of experience with 15.6in laptop, I think 14in is the best size as a carry-on.

Weight:This Acer laptop is 4.65lb. The battery is equally heavy as the brick so I guess the total weight would be above 6lb. What Acer could improve on is removing dvd drive (they're probably going to do that on the following series) then hopefully lowers the price by $30 or replace with 3.0 USB.

Battery life: I watched a movie with max volume 1hr45min which used 36% battery and music for 1hour with medium volume 21%, wireless was on but monitor was dimmed a little. So I think it can last 4-5hr with normal daily use.

Good features: Keyboard can switch to number pad.Quiet fan and good ventilation. 4 2.0 USB ports all on the sides(my toshiba had 2 on the back which are less useful). 1.3M webcam works good.

Performance: most of the 2008,2009 games are playable in detail graphics, 2010 games, some in high some in medium. (according to Benchmark graphics card) The only game I have tried so far is King's bounty2008. CPU temp went up to 65C, HD 38C in a RM temp that was 45F. In order to keep cool, the fan gets noisier.

My complaints: Some featured software that I don't know how useful they are, however, they definitely slow down the Windows start. MOST FRUSTRATION COMES FROM WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM. COMPATIBILITY ISSUE WITH MANY PROGRAMS I HAVE BEEN USING. SO THE FIRST FEW DAYS,I TRIED TO INSTALL SOFTWARE, ERRORS POP OUT AND CRASHED 4 TIMES. OTHER LANGUAGE PACKS ARE EXCLUDED TO LURE ME TO UPGRADE TO ULTIMATE ($130). FOR BILINGUAL PEOPLE, IT CAN'T BE MORE FRUSTRATING WHEN PROGRAMS CAME OUT WITH ??%%??xx%%xxoo. THE OFFICE 2010 IS STARTER, NO POWERPOINT. MICROSOFT, I KNOW IT COST YOU A LOT MONEY DURING DEVELOPMENT BUT THERE IS NEARLY NO PRODUCTION COST. DON'T YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN MONOPOLY. I'LL PROBABLY INSTALL LINUX WITHIN NEXT FEW WEEKS. ALSO, LET US SWITCH TO OPEN OFFICE. BTW, BRICK GETS REALLY HOT WHEN PLAYING GAMES AND CHARGING.

Updates: The screen goes black then come back when switching between battery and plugin. Firefox always crash when it happens.

Overall, it is an above average laptop with good gaming ability. Portability can be improved, for instance, the brick, the dvd rom.

ps. maybe heavy brick has more longevity???

I've been using a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge for the last two years for work and love it. So I bought my wife the Ideapad z580 the other day. For the money you can't get better specs. Intel core i5 processor, 8gb Ram, 750gb hardrive were included in a $499 deal at Staples. The other laptops of similar spec were at least $100 more and then some. The feel and handle of the z580 are great. But there are some key problems with this computer that have caused us to return it in favor of something else.

1. The track pad doesn't have separate buttons, they are integrated. I don't care one way or the other, but they have to work. The buttons seemed to work only half of the time. I soon just started to tap on the pad to select things because the buttons wouldn't do it. I even tried to adjust the sensitivity of them to no avail. It's also super sensitive. If you even remotely touch anything other than your finger to it, the pointer jumps all over. It also seemed to select things when our fingers hovered over the track pad. For me, the track pad has to work well since you use it for everything. If it doesn't it'll make your computer experience a disaster.

2. The network card would lose signal and we would have to reset the connection. This is unacceptable as well.

3. The computer, if left open goes into sleep mode, which is fine, but the problem is that it won't wake up. The only way to wake up the z580 if it goes to sleep with the screen open is to push the power button and restart the computer. There is no fix for this per the user forums about this laptop.

Between the poor track pad, poor internet network card, and a computer that you can't wake up; it made our decision to return it and look for something else pretty easy. those things just make the laptop experience miserable.

I never thought I'd say this but the trackpad alone is reason enough you should not buy this laptop. It is the worst design I have seen in any of the half dozen laptops I've owned. It is way larger than most trackpads making it far too easy to bump when typing. Additonally, as others have noted the integrated buttons don't work properly. Whenever I'm trying to right click on something the computer keeps left clicking. Usually there's this perfect sweepspot to the far left, but it doesn't work consistently. I think the designers must have realized midway through that you'd wind up using a mouse all the time because they put a shortcut key (Function-F6) to turn off the trackpad, which I now do all the time.

It seems that laptop manufacturers think that a touchscreen is only useful in 13" and smaller machines. I do actual work on my laptop and need at least a 15" display. The Acer V5-571P was the only 15" touchscreen laptop I could find that is available today (Nov '12) and reasonably priced. I picked up the Core i5 model from the Microsoft store for $699 and upgraded the memory to 8GB RAM and replaced the slow 500GB HD with a 256GB Samsung SSD. The motherboard supports 6Gbs SATA, so I'm able to get the full read/write speeds from my SSD (400MBs write / 500MBs read). Replacing the RAM was simple because there's a panel held on by 2 screws. Replacing the hard drive is something that will give many people pause. Basically the entire laptop needs to be disassembled to get access to the HDD. It takes about 30 minutes of careful disassembly; luckily there is an Acer repair manual PDF available to show you how. Windows 8 boots pretty quickly from a normal HDD, but after installing the SSD, it now goes from completely powered off to the log in screen in 8 seconds. The touchscreen works as advertised and I have no complaints about it. The keyboard and trackpad are not so great. The trackpad is placed a little too far left so that my palm is constantly brushing it and causing unintended behavior. The backlit keys are a nice addition. The battery it ships with is a low capacity (14.8V 2350mAH). This is too small for a Core i5 laptop; With normal use I'm able to get 3.5 hours out of it. I think the battery life will be less with the original hard drive since the Samsung SSD is super low power. I have not been able to find a high capacity battery for this model. I would gladly carry some extra bulk to increase the battery life. If anyone finds a compatible battery of at least 4400mAH, please let me know.

Pros:

1) Touchscreen is fast and accurate; works as you would like

2) Price is fair for a 15" Core i5 dual core touchscreen laptop

3) Has enough ports to do what you need

4) Slim and relatively light for the power it packs

5) Includes a USB 3.0 port

6) Supports 6GBs SATA

7) Easy to upgrade the RAM

8) Supports dual monitor output (as most modern laptops do)

9) Power adapter is small and light

Cons:

1) Keyboard is a bit cheap some keys temporarily stick as you're typing

2) Touchpad works fine, but is a bit large so at times is accidentally touched

3) Battery life is not great (3.5 hours) and Acer doesn't offer a high capacity battery (yet?)

4) Build quality feels cheap and plasticky

5) The Ethernet+VGA dongle is less than ideal

6) If you're brave, it's worth replacing the HDD with an SSD.

7) The SD card slot is too shallow. You can't leave a card in the slot when you travel or it will be broken/lost because it sticks out too much.

8) Speaker sound quality is poor

9) Doesn't wake from sleep when you open the lid (can be either a Win8 bug or hardware issue)

Hardware wise, it's excellent and you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. Unfortunately, this laptop was plagued with wifi problems for the whole time I owned it. It would not maintain a wifi connection for more than 20 minutes before completely crapping out and giving me the "limited access" message.

Doing a google search for Acer Aspire A5 wifi showed me a TON of users who were having the same issues and there wasn't a fix available.

get this Acer Aspire V5-571P for my kid(in university). the windows 8 is fun to play with touchscreen. the same cost you may select between i5 CPU with touchscreen or i7 CPU with old standard screen. I think you can not feel much of the speed different between i5 and i7. but you and your friend will know the different right away when you play on the touchscreen. By the way, the win8 pre-loaded a VPN, you cannot use school download win7 VPN, but you can config the WIN8 pre-load VPN for your school or company network. My kid said WIN8 (with touchscreen) work for ALL the university APPS as well as MS office 2010.

Unfortunately, fresh out of the box I am having the same WIFI problem. A forum mentioned a new driver coming out to fix this, but when I tried to update the driver, it said you already have the latest version. So I would say stay away from this product unless you can live with using a hard wire Ethernet connection.

I've been searching for a laptop for 8 months. This is the best value money can buy. I've been in the IT industry for 15 years and I know value/quality. No need to look further for an incredible laptop at a great price. I have no interest in this brand name, I just know value/quality when I see it.
