First thing I should mention: I bought this laptop at a spectacular sale price. I paid $729 for this machine with 640mb of RAM (maxed out) and an Airport card with it. I highly recommend that you do max it out. I played with the 128mb version of this in Compusa and I noticed it to be significantly slower. When maxed out, this machine will run significantly faster than my 1.67Ghz Windows XP desktop in any task you will throw at it. On top of that, the Mac OS is far superior to anything ever put out by Microsoft. It's stable, easy to use, it just works. I have OS X Panther on this and I highly recommend it. I could never live without Expose, Apples far superior answer to the PC bar at the bottom. For those who are not familiar with it, this new feature in Panther will allow you to push F9 on the keyboard and show every window that is open. It will show exactly what is happening in that window at the moment, meaning that if I were to have a video running on it, the video would play on the tiny window as I look for the window I want. I click the window and it goes back to normal, only with that window on top. VERY USEFUL.

Besides that, this machine is very well designed. The ports are on the side, no more reaching behind to plug it in. Its got a thick layer of plastic casing, yet is just over an inch thick. The 12 inch screen is amoung the clearest I've ever seen, and is suprisingly easy to use. The speakers are just okay, but you don't buy a laptop for speakers anyway. The snow colored design is absolutly beautiful, and is a nice plus. The screen is on a solid bar, not one of those flimsy PC hinges. This is the most solidly built, yet lightest, thinnest, most compact laptops I've ever owned or used. I have had several PC laptops before this one, and this is, by far, the best machine I have ever owned.

By the way, the battery life on this machine is, to sum it up in one word, unbelievable. I can get about 4 hours of battery life while watching VIDEOS on this, surfing the web I can get upwards of four and a half or more! The low power consumption of the G3 processor makes this an ultra-portable machine.

For those who are considering switching. Don't be discouraged by the OS right away. It is something you will need to get used to, but after a few days you will never know how you ever lived without it. I now go back to my PC and just absolutly despise it every second I use it. I have now gotten used to the Mac and enjoy it more than I ever did with my PC. You know what they say, once you've gone Mac, you don't ever go back.

Well, to sum it up, this machine is perfect. I have yet to come across any sort of flaw whatsoever. Mac has thought this thing through, their attention to detail is amazing. Everything down to the little hook that comes out just as you close the lid to lock it shut has been designed perfectly. This isn't something that has just been scrapped together by Dell or something, this is a powerful piece of computing genius that has been designed for people out to make the intelligent choice for their computing needs. If you're stupid, go the ways of the PC world and conform to the ways of Bill Gates If you're smart, buy a Mac, you won't regret it. I guarantee!

Great laptop, extremely fast, runs hot but with the size of this machine don't think you would want the weight on your lap for to long. The "turbo" fan button does exactly that kicks the fans into overdrive. Does a great drop reducing the heat output however they are loud. I rarely use it cause I have had no real reason to fire them up. The Laptop does a great job venting out the back and away keeping the machine running 24-7 at stock fan speed. Overall if you are inpatient and want speed speed speed and dont care what it costs then this is the machine for you. You can throw anything you want at this machine and it will preform.

The MSI GT70 Dragon Series 2 is a great bargain for power and portability.

There is minimal bloatware out of the box, but I still ended up deleting a thing or two. I also had some issues with the included Blu-ray software. A paid software update fixes a lot of the issues, but for the price it would have been nice if it ran smooth from the start. (I have had the same problems with blu-ray players on other systems as well, so it is hardly an issue exclusive to this series or brand. It seems PC blu-ray software is just behind the curve compared to video game systems and stand alone players.)

I've used windows 8 before, so I had no issue navigating the operating system. I will warn that the touchpad mouse is a bit oversensitive to input, so sometimes you will swipe or pinch when you just intend to click, but sensitivity can be adjusted, or you can just deactivate the pad with the push of a button and use a mouse.

The keyboard is great. I tend to prefer mechanical keyboards, which the one built in is not, but it still offers a satisfying level of resistance and is extremely responsive. The ability to easily adjust the keylighting is a fun bonus. (You cannot however light individual keys, which is unfortunate, but not a deal breaker for anyone, I'm sure.)

The system performs well overall. It boots fast, and can handle anything you could currently throw at it.

The battery life is on par with most laptops. I don't use any power saving features, so it lasts 3 to 4 hours before needing a recharge when not plugged in. If you intend to use it for anything where you might lose track of the time, such as design work, youtube, reddit, etc, I suggest trying the hybrid power mode and letting it charge as you work.

It isn't the lightest laptop available, but it is much lighter than my last laptop, and even with the 17" screen, is easy to hold in one hand and sits comfortably on my lap.

I have had zero problems with heat, which is usually a concern with higher powered laptops.

It may seem pricey, but part for part you get more than you pay for. I recommend it to anyone in the market for a portable work / play tool. It fits in nicely on my desk at work, my lap on the go, and my desk at home.

Went through 2 if these bad boys... And after heavy troubleshooting and wasting of my time I gave up and returned both. Each one suffered random blue screen of death issues at random times. With a pletha of different codes all pointing to different driver/ hardware compatability problems. Honestly I blame windows 8, wich is a steamy pile of crap! This machine should never have been shipped with it. It not a touch screen so windows 8 is worthless and clearly full of bugs. As far as performance this laptop is a beast. I was running skyrim, metro last light, and crysis 3 at ultra settings with awesome frame rates. When it wasn't bsoding on me that is.

I can't recommend this machine until they fix this inherent problem with it. Go with the new asus instead.

I use this machine for electronic design. I write firmware, and do pretty intensive 3D cad.

The installed software contained essentially no bloatware, and the machine performs wonderfully.

At work, I have a Dell xeon workstation with their Nvidia Quadro, and I have pretty much given up using that machine since my laptop outperforms it significantly.

The keyboard feels great, even though I am used to the split keyboards like the Microsoft Natural keyboard.

The trackpad is as good as I ever expect a trackpad to be, but I usually use my space navigator and SteelSeries Sensei mouse. The five USB ports on the machine enable me to almost never need a hub.

I recently attended a training event where everyone had laptops. We needed to install and run a bunch of embedded systems software. It was kind of fun to be done with the install LONG before anyone else was. Let's face it, one reason you buy something like this is to inspire envy in your peers. Mission Accomplished. :)

This machine stands out in the crowd of black plastic slabs.

The power brick is, well... a Brick. I don't expect a machine like this to run from a wall-wart.

The power cable is long enough to find an outlet even in hotel rooms, where they tend to be rather inconveniently located.

The speakers and sound are wonderful, though I have to qualify that observation, I am 55 with the usual sorts of hearing issues at my age. Enjoy your hearing while you can, and take care of it! I'm listening to Lars Erstrand on the vibrophone at the moment, from an Opus-3 disc, and it sounds wonderful.

The screen certainly meets my needs, good contrast and sharp images.

The triple raid C drive is as fast as they say, HDTune reports 1500M.

I looked at many machines before choosing this one, and the deciding factor was raw performance. My desktop is a 4 GHz machine with 64G ram and Nvidia Titan card. This laptop isn't THAT powerful, but it definitely measures up to my needs. Mine is equipped with 32G ram and 3x128G SSD

I did install the Classic Shell which you can find on Sourceforge. I don't like the "metro" UI, and with 8.1 coming up it sounds like MS has heard that loud and clear from many users.

One tip I can pass on, the Pelican 1495 briefcase makes an excellent carry case, but if the laptop were 1/4 inch wider it wouldn't fit! I put the brick alongside the laptop and nestle the cables in twoard the case handle. The mouse, space nav, brick and cables all fit nicely but they don't leave much room for anything else. I didn't want a so-so case for this laptop. The MSI provided carry sleeve protects the case against rub marks while traveling.

Nitpicks: The fan control is pretty much all or nothing, and on full speed it is loud. Again, reasonable expectations help. Moving air causes noise. I am not displeased with this, just noting it. The thermal exhaust is significant when the machine is working hard.

Software used: Altium designer, Atmel AVR Studio 4 and 6, Mathcad, Solidworks 2013, Povray, MS Office, etc.

Pros:

1. Somewhat lightweight. The machine is not as light as an iPad or a MacBook Air but it is by no means heavy and holding it 768x1366 rather than 1366x768 makes the weight very manageable.

2. The "yoga" aspect of the Yoga 11s. Using a normal laptop after using the Yoga makes me wonder why no one in the computer industry implemented this idea on a mass production scale before.

3. Build quality is fantastic and the wrist rest is made of a rubberised plastic that is a joy to feel.

4. Lenovo (IBM) have been on point with their keyboards in the past and although the keyboard on the IdeaPad 11s is no match for the Thinkpad 13, using the 11s keyboard is smooth and easy despite the smaller size.

Cons:

1. Bare minimum of ports (most ultrabooks have this problem) at 1 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, 1 HDMI.

2. Casing is secured with hexagonal screws. If you already have a set of those then no problem but if you don't I suggest you buy a set.

3. Battery life is 3hr 7hr depending on usage. Not really a con but for those who mistakenly believe this will run like the Yoga 11 or an iPad this might be a con.

4. 1366x768 is fairly low especially compared with my phone (1280x720) or my Nook (1440x900).

Thoughts:

The weight of the Yoga 11s makes the device a laptop that turns into a tablet rather than a tablet that turns into a laptop. This means that you probably will not be using the 11s to show off in the park like one might with a shiny new iPad.

The screen resolution is high enough to not warrant any problem from me but for those who greatly enjoy the MacBook Air resolution or the Yoga 2 resolution then here is your fair warning.

This will not run your games. Save for games that are very old or animated largely with sprites the laptop simply cannot keep up at full screen resolution. League of Legends will run at bare minimum settings but at that point the animation for many skills becomes nearly invisible (Ezreal's Q is a good example of this).

I know i have more cons than pros and many negative thoughts on the product but as an ultrabook this machine really does bridge the divide between tablet and laptop in a way that the XPS 12 or the swivel+flip designs of HP never could. I only listed so many cons because some prospective buyers might want gaming performance or iPad battery life, not find it on the 11s and unfairly rate the machine lower.

Post Script:

Windows 8 is an unadulterated horror to use and it makes using the Yoga 11s an extreme chore. It is truly saddening to see such a fine machine mutilated by the hodgepodge, expired, made out of cat meat chop suey that is Windows 8. As soon as I figure out how I will install Windows 7 and consider losing some of the tablet-y features well worth the gain of a far more useful UI.

DVD player makes a lot of noise ... unless you hold it. I do love the big screen.

I hate Windows 8 ... maybe thats just my bias towards what I am used to. But having to find a separate pane to close out of an existing window sems stupid to me. Worse, that pane that should open up at the top of IE when you move the cursor to the very top often times won't show up. Not sure if this is Windows bug of my failure to uderstand how it should work.

Sometimes the touch pad won't work no matter what I do. And it's not that it's turned off, it just stops working. I can maybe move it across the screen but not up or down. May 5 Update: Dell Support was very helpful with a quick solution to upgrade the BIOS on the laptop. One that was complete, it became a nice quiet laptop that fully meets my hardware needs. Windows 8, however, I still do not like, but that is not what I'm reviewing here.

I like everything about this laptop (not counting Windows 8 which, so far, I do not like) except for its fan noise. It's quiet for a little bit when I first boot it, but once it warms up the fan comes on and is annoyingly loud. Once on I have not yet had the fan slow back down into quietness. I haven't yet decided if this is annoying enough to return it. I'll decide that this weekend. All of my previous laptops were quieter than this one. I'm leaning toward a non-Dell but don't know which might be better and quieter.

After having a home computer for over 6 years the old computer finally needed replacing, & I decided to go the way of a laptop for a new one. For what I was looking for this one matched what I wanted for the price I could afford. So far I couldn't be happier. I had to get used to Windows 8, but it didn't take long to figure out how it works. I actually really like it because you can go between the "Start" page & a regular desktop screen. The "start" page is customizable so you can put all your favorite programs on one page without having to navigate through other stuff to get the program/s you want to use.

I do not use my laptop for anything fancy: regular internet stuff such as checking e-mails, hanging out on a few forums & my favorite websites, Netflix (hence why I bought a laptop with such a large screen), editing my business website, search engines when necessary, etc. Once you get used to everything its very easy to navigate including settings. Im not very techy so I cant give a fancy review about RAM & RPM, but for what its worth the computer runs smoothly, quickly, & I haven't had any issues so far. This computer starts up & is functional VERY quickly: it doesnt take more than a minute or 2 to start up from when you hit the power button to typing in your log in password & getting to the "start" page.

The touch pad took getting used to as well, & like any laptop it makes scrolling a little difficult & slow, but I bought a wireless mouse for when I need to do stuff with extra speed. The screen is bright (when you set it to be), & all pictures/images are clear & crisp.

A full battery lasts a little over 6 hours at full screen brightness (which is a big battery killer), & charging a dead battery takes no more than 2 hours. This laptop comes with a battery monitor so it tells you percentage & how much longer your battery should last as well as battery health (so you know when the battery needs replacing), & there are settings you can change if you plan to keep the laptop plugged in for extended periods of time, plan on frequently charging it with a not low battery (ex: 50%, 75%, etc), etc.

Shipping wise it was packed well & arrived on time.

The only con is the size of the laptop can be be a bit bulky, but I think its worth it so its not a huge deal for me.

Overall VERY happy with my purchase!

I originally purchased this computer from my local Best Buy store and have been very impressed with its performance. The screen folds effortlessly 360 degrees into a tablet and the software transitions very smoothly while disabling the keyboard to prevent the keys from being pressed inadvertently. Windows 8 shines with a touchscreen interface and i5 Intel Processor in this computer keeps this machine running FAST. Boots in seconds from a 128gb SSD and is very lightweight to carry. Build quality is solid unlike some of the other touchscreen windows 8 PCs that BB/Amazon offers (I had to return several others before settling on this one). Only recommendation is to purchase a case for it as the exterior paint tends to scratch easily.

Overall this is the best quality touchscreen Win8 notebook on the market for the money.

I am not a computer wiz...but over the evening and this morning...I have figured out most everything....I am clumsy with the touch screen...but have that down now. It is fast....everything works...installed a trail of Microsoft Office...that all worked.....love the fact that I have been able to import photos from facebook into a photo file....for a little over 400 dollars I am very very happy. The only drawback is that ebay was already installed as an app...and it seemed to pop up constantly.....I like e-bay but was not interested in dealing with it as I was setting up the computer.

I had a MAC before...never quite got used to the lack of compatibility......this is going to be very nice and I am likely going to order one for my office computer too..since it needs to be replaced

the space bar is noisy..not sure why that is irritating but it is...if you need a functional, uptodate lap top for a modest price this seems to do the trick

While searching for the ideal laptop for myself, I found that all laptops seem to have huge trade-offs. This one is no exception. I chose it because it packed a relatively fast CPU and a decent graphics card into a very portable PC. Every other laptop I found with discrete graphics was a lot heavier, and most were pricier. The trade-off here (as with all laptops that have fast CPU's and discrete graphics) is that battery life is far from impressive. Unfortunately, there is no 9-cell (more powerful) battery available. Based on the location of the battery on the bottom of the laptop, I don't think there ever will a more powerful (and larger) option.

Performance on this is great. Windows 7 is extremely responsive, audio production software runs smoothly, and game performance is even better than I expected Dragon Age Origins looks beautiful at the screen's max resolution with most graphics settings somewhere between medium and high. I haven't tried editing video yet, but based on what I've seen so far, I don't expect any performance issues. If you're just planning to browse the web and work on spreadsheets, documents, etc. this may be overkill for you. You would probably have no problems on a cheaper machine with a slower CPU, without discrete graphics, and with longer battery life.

Speaking of battery life, it is pretty short, but I find it to be usable. Asus added a dedicated button for switching power profiles. Switching to battery-saving mode gives a significant boost over high-performance and entertainment modes. I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems that battery-saving mode will get you 4-5 hours of web browsing and other light work, while entertainment mode might let you watch one movie before you need to search for an outlet. Depending on how and where you expect to use your laptop, this may or may not be a problem. In high-performance mode, hot air blows out of the right side, but the bottom doesn't get hot enough to burn laps.

In response to other feedback I've seen:

It's been said that the touch-pad buttons are stiff. I don't find this to be the case at all. They seem quite comfortable to me, my girlfriend, and my mother.

Another reviewer mentioned having issues using the touch-pad scroll. The part about scrolling not stopping without an extra touch is a non-issue. This an intentional behavior that can be changed or turned off in settings. However, the part about having to hit the line is a very real issue. The problem is that the outer edges (maybe 1/4") of the pad do not respond to touch. You don't need to hit the line exactly, but you do need to make sure you're not right at the edge, which frequently requires a look. This is the most annoying problem I have with the n81vp.

Keyboard quality and noise is fine. It's comfortable to type on. It's not silent, but not noticeably loud either.

The function key is where most people would expect 'control' to be, but after a few weeks with the laptop, I find myself getting used to this.

In summary, the Asus N81VP-D2 is great for audio production, multimedia work, gaming, and most other demanding tasks.

It's a waste of money for more casual users and no good if you need long battery life.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this is one superb notebook. I was also looking for a notebook that is not too large (15" and above) nor too small and underpowered (12" and less). In the 13" and 14" range, I pretty much narrowed it down to ASUS and Dell Studio XPS 13". I own a two-year old Dell XPS 13", which had its motherboard replaced twice in two years due to heat issues (this seems to be a very common problem with Dell XPS 13" line and Dell doesn't seem to acknowledge it or actively try to find a solution). Bestbuy has Dell Studio XPS 13" at about the same price as this ASUS, but with only one-year warranty. As can be expected, I am hesitant to make a purchase due to my past experience.

ASUS is fast and stable with Windows 7. The machine looks and feels well built. Furthermore, the machine stays cool even under heavy use. The small complaints I have are that it doesn't come with dedicated media keys/buttons, and the keyboard definitely feels different from that of Dell and takes some getting used to. Certainly, I am not faulting ASUS for these. A good thing is that you are getting a bargain buying from Amazon. I was in Taiwan last December the same ASUS model sold there for roughly US$1,300 when you would expect a lower price because ASUS is a Taiwanese brand. I guess Amazon's trade volume must entitle it to a huge discount.

I regret purchasing this computer; it really is not worth the price compared to others on the market now. I have also had some issues with the computer itself. If you Google "ASUS N81 crash" you will find that many people are experiencing random system crashes, especially when trying to do any gaming at all on this computer. There is a possible hardware issue that causes the crash, which many assume to be from the ATI Mobility card, but ASUS has not acknowledged it.

I sent my machine back to ASUS for repairs due to all the random system crashes I experienced; it was updated as "Repaired" and assigned a tracking number the day after received. I called and they said no issues were found with my computer. I called several times and left my number several times, but they would never let me speak with a supervisor, and a supervisor would not call me back. I got my computer back and found that they had removed all the AMD/ATI software from the machine, but didn't make any mention of this on their notes. There is a problem with either the graphics card and/or its software. I did a full reformat and fresh install and got rid of all the ATI and AMD software except for the driver, and my system no longer crashes. The WLAN card included is also really weak. I replaced mine with a Gigabyte GN-WI07HT-RH that I had in an older machine, and it gets much better connection. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 7200.4. Just google the name of the hard drive and you see what a piece of crap it is. It's a noisy, clunky hard drive; I guess I will replace it with a Hitachi drive on my own dime. No real reason to RMA it for the loud Seagate because it seems like it's the product itself that is a joke, not just mine.

This computer has had issues with multi-tasking. It locks up and requires a full reboot. When I watch stream feeds, I have to reboot 3-4 times in a 2 hour period. I have a netbook that performs better than this computer. It's pretty much a piece of crap.

I experienced terrible customer service, a poor warranty/repair department, and unaddressed shutdown issues make this a computer to avoid, in my opinion. I have purchased three ASUS laptops in the past three years, but after the experience with this one, it will be my last.

When I purchased this laptop I had several criteria

1) Powerful enough to last my family 3 years at least

2) Enough gaming power to do light gaming

3) Portable I didn't want a 17", I wanted 14-15"

4) A maximum of around $1000

5) A quality name/warranty this is a laptop afterall

1) Power The "windows experience" rating is 5.8 but that is due to the replaceable hard drive. The Processor got 6.4, the graphics 6.7. While the stated max of the motherboard is 4gb RAM, its reported to handle up to 8gb. No this isn't one of the lasted i7 or i5 processors but its a very powerful dual-core and if you aren't doing media editing this will last a long time.

2) Gaming I have Dragon Age running at max details and it doesn't even skip a beat. The specs call the graphics chip a HD4650, the sticker says HD4670. The only difference between the two is clock speed, and this is clocked as a 4650. You could over clock it but I don't see the need yet. This isn't a laptop for hardcore gamers but it can play hardcore games.

3) Portable this is a 14" laptop with desktop replacement hardware! Of course the downside is the tiny battery can't keep up. I'd suggest buying a spare battery or staying near an outlet.

4) When I got this laptop it was 1000 w/ a 100 dollar rebate, its gone up a bit but its still a steal!

5) Most laptop companies give a 1 year hardware failure warranty. Asus gives a 2 year hardware and 1 year accidental damage. Oh and Asus laptops are much more reliable than HP/Dell/Gateway ones.

Cons:

While the laptop looks great (aesthetics and awesome picture), a couple of design flaws make it tough to keep. The first problem is that the wrist rest area gets very hot; there doesn't seem to be any thermal insulation separating the surface and the CPU inside. Second, the wifi connection works intermittently. Never had this issue at home with my other computers. And I see from the Sony site that many others are experiencing this.

This is a very nice laptop. It looks and feels far more expensive that what it actually is. The boot time is around 10 seconds, which I must say I truly enjoy as I am now departing from my aging HP and Asus laptops. The backlit feature is great for low light or night time and the screen is great. The only complaint I would say it the bloatware that comes with it. I used the Sony Update feature to update all drivers and it made the keyboard unusable so I would say uninstall and be weary, trust updating from Windows Update only. although this is not the touchscreen version, the interface is very fluid, and even thought Windows 8 has that terrible learning curve, it is still a great laptop. I definately recommend this laptop as a "back to school" laptop as it has both the capacity to serve as a work and entertainment laptop. :-)

So far I'm still testing this, and getting use to it. I'm for one isn't a fan of Win8 buuuuuut I'll get use to it. Was going to install Win7 but couldn't get into the bios. Otherwise, it's a fast start up. Very fast. IMO I think the trackpad is a weird placement, and I miss the actual left click and right click button, takes awhile to get use too. Many adjustments.

The backlit keyboard doesn't have a brightness adjustment, I think. But it's not bad. It's not to bright, or to dark, its just right. I've been dealing with desktops for years and not had a laptop for a long time so I am still getting use to the keyboard and thats why I got the 10-key version. So far I'm still getting use to it and its not bad.

The screen does need to be adjusted for your viewing angle, soooo make sure you adjust it in the right position before you move it.

The sound quality is amazing!! Loud! Clear! Skyping right now and the voice is clear!

Haven't tested the battery life.

To end it all, the webcam is amazing! According to the other person on Skype. "It's so clear!" and I'm in a dark room. Like no other lights except the laptop. Very satisfied! I also installed a start button, and I love it. I am also having problems with transfering a picture from my Oppo Find 5 to this laptop via NFC. Says "The receiver doesn't support large beam transfers", so I don't know why 147kb is alot. But I will see what I can do to fix this.

I liked the size and the screen was good but these new mouse pads are terrible 1 hour into it I wanted to throw the computer out the window. The mouse pad had no right or left click buttons and there was no control with the cursor at all. If your going to get a Sony Vaio I recommend the i5 processor the i3 is a little to basic and slow for me but could do well for someone who just looks up e-mail and browses the web. I also loved the illuminated keyboards, all laptops should have this feature most people use there laptops all the time and that would be good to see on more models in the future. Also get a computer that has windows 7, windows 8 is garbage.

This laptop is awesome. A week prior to this, i bought a Toshiba with an a4 processor. I was in the market after my daughter broke my dell inspiron. Her school program is based online; i searched chromebooks and lower end toshibas. Out the door price on the toshiba was certainly cheaper by a couple hundred bucks in comparison to the vaio. However, the toshiba didn't make it 3 days in my household before i was executing a return. On the Toshiba, the mouse froze several times, it was only for a couple minutes at a time, but when you're trying to get something done, it felt like hours; Netflix also took forever and sound quality was mediocre. It performed like a $300 laptop. That being said, if you're able to spend a couple hundred more, grab the lower end Sony vaio. For me, it's definitely worth it. The sound and display quality are suberp and it's able to process faster. It had no problem with Netflix and it plays music even when you close the lid. The light up keyboard is fun too. Great quality and still within a tight budget....

On the flip side, the one minor annoyance (with the sony vaio) and i will say minor because i prefer the annoyance over the consistent freeze-ups of the toshiba: the vaio does lose internet connection on a scale of...i'd say infrequently after a week's use. It's maybe done it 3 times of the 10-15 uses. My wifi signal will indicate "limited" even when i'm right in front of my signal. At that point, it's been a simple disconnect (from the laptop wifi), count to 10 and reconnect. It's worked all 3 times so far, but it does need that 10ish second gap. Not a deal-breaker for me, but i could see how it might annoy others on varying degrees, so heads-up.

I have been using this laptop for the last few days and my initial impressions are highly positive. I bought it as a gift for my wife but I had to take some time with it before giving it up. She was using an older 17" Dell and was tired of carrying around an 8 pound laptop so I started my search. With Windows 8 coming out I knew I wanted a touch screen and the only model in my price range was this Asus. I have had plenty of experience with Asus motherboards and video cards and they have always been great products so I decided to take the plunge. So far it has been a wise decision.

When I opened the box I was impressed with how thin and light the laptop is. Compared to my Dell XPS 15 this thing is tiny but packs a screen just 1.3" smaller. While it is light weight it still feels very solid in your hands. The laptop weighs about 4.0lbs by my scale. Surprisingly the power brick is tiny as well, measuring about 3"x3"x1" and weighing 1.2lbs. My wife wanted something smaller to carry around and this fits the bill perfectly.

Opening the lid reveals a 14" touch screen with 1366x768 resolution and the keyboard/touchpad combination. The screen is bright and clear and the viewing angles are very good. Love it or hate it Windows 8 is included and having a touchscreen makes it even better. The screen responds well to your touch and the only time I see fingerprints on it is when the screen is off. The top of the laptop however shows more fingerprints than the screen. I was initially concerned with the lower resolution but on this size of screen it works well and my wife actually prefers it over the HD resolution of my Dell as it makes text easier to read.

The laptop has a Chiclet style keyboard that is not backlit. I have read about people having issues with the space bar on other Asus models but it appears to have been resolved because every key has been very responsive. The touchpad works well and supports multi-touch gestures such as pinch to zoom and two finger scrolling. After some use I like the touchpad and buttons. The touchpad and buttons are all one piece with the buttons slightly elevated to provide a click when you press them. You do not have to press very hard on the buttons and they do not feel stiff or mushy. In the center of the buttons is a line to show you left and right. I prefer the touchpad on the Asus over my XPS.

On the left side of the laptop are two USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader and the microphone/headset jack. On the right side there is 1 USB 3.0 port, a full size HDMI port, a VGA port, an Ethernet jack and the AC jack. There is no optical drive but with high speed memory sticks and the internet I don't see this as a problem. If you really need it there are plenty of small, cheap external drives available.

We have had the laptop for a few days day now and the battery life is very good. Over the first few days we used it quite a bit and only charged it once a day. Tonight I unplugged the laptop from the charger (it was at 93%) and watched Netflix for the next 3 and a half hours and the battery meter says it still has 1 hour or 21% of the battery left. The brightness was set to about 30% for my test. I would guess 4 to 5 hours of battery life will be average.

Sound on this laptop is good but not to the level of my XPS 15. There are two speakers on the bottom of the laptop to the left and right sides, angled to bounce the sound off whatever surface the laptop is sitting on. I cranked up some music and the sound is clear at any volume with no distortion but lacked a little fullness in the low and mid-end. I listen to a lot of music while at work and I certainly would not complain if I had to use this laptop to do it.

The included wireless N adapter has good performance with speeds up to 7 MB/s when transferring files to and from my HTPC in the living room over 40 feet away. It connected to my wireless network right away and reconnects almost instantly when resuming from sleep. The wireless radio only operates on the 2.4mhz band and while Asus' webpage says that Bluetooth is included, I don't believe it is. I can't find anything in Device Manager for Bluetooth Devices.

Performance has been very snappy thanks to the dual core I5 processor and 24gb SSD caching drive. Applications launch quickly and boot times are minimal. Even my wife has noticed how much speedier the computer is than her old one. I have not done any gaming on it yet but will amend my review when I get a chance. I will note that there is some bloatware installed on the machine such as McAfee that you should get rid of as soon as you can. Windows 8 includes Defender by default so why Asus loads McAfee is beyond me. Asus Updater was also showing an error in the desktop when I booted but that cleared up after Windows 8 installed some updates.

Overall this is a fun little computer and using the touchscreen with Windows 8 has proved to be a great experience. This review has been my opinion so far but after finally giving the computer to my wife it doesn't look like I will get it back any time soon. Now that she can play Bingo Blitz with the touchscreen it looks like I will have to get one of my own! She summed it up to me in two enthusiastic words, "It's Fun!" And here I thought this was a work PC...

I'll keep this short, and just put what I consider relevant. My first computer had a cassette drive, and my first laptop wasn't much more advanced, so I've had a lot of experience with this type of technology.

My opinion of this product is that it's the finest built laptop I've ever handled, with one exception the wi-fi. To be fair, it might be a Windows 8 thing, a driver thing, or a hardware thing, but the wi-fi goes out randomly every hour or two. Disabling the wireless and re-enabling brings it back.

Other than this, and again I don't know it's the laptops fault this is perfect. If you like the feel of a Macbook, but not the price, this will make your day. Aluminum chassis, excellent touchscreen (which brings Windows 8 to life, without it, Windows 8 is garbage), the weight, and the thickness (under an inch) are matched only by the quality feel and operation of the product as a whole.

In short this thing rocks, buy it.

UPDATE: I contacted Asus, and although I can't explain why, their fix worked. Uninstall the wireless adapter from device manager, restart, reinstall, and bam I no longer randomly disconnect. 5/5 now

Update #2: Asus website, and support, insist this product is not sold without bluetooth. The amazon page does not list yes or no for bluetooth. Long and short somehow the system I received from Amazon has no bluetooth. Asus support insists that's defective hardware, as they only sell it with the Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth. They (Asus) gave me an RMA number to ship it back, and they will send me one with Bluetooth correctly functioning. Big hassle and for this I took off a star.

Update #3: So I got my Vivobook back, after only 6 days, which was impressive, with a note which read "This product does not come with Bluetooth"...

That after 2 techs told me (pre-rma) that it did, the specifications page on their website still says it has Integrated Bluetooth 4.0. Removing a star.

I purchased this laptop about 3 weeks ago. Reloaded it to Windows 7 as i despise Windows 8. After a few driver issues with having to hunt for them, the system performs beautifully. Only game i have played on it is World of Tanks, and it runs at 80 FPS with medium graphics on average. Not a top end gaming system, but is very capable. I also installed a 256GB Solid State drive before i ever turned it on the first time. So no idea how it functioned on the original drive. The laptop is very light for its size, and i almost forget its in my bag at times. I have been carrying an HP Elitebook, which is 2 to 3 times heavier, and very noticeable now that i carry this one.

I bought a 12-inch Powerbook after I gave my old Sony Vaio notebook the Pete Townshend treatment I put my fist through it. (Yes, it looks like a stained glass window.) I hadn't used a Mac in years, but I decided I'd had it with Microsoft and Windows. All it took was one weekend and a good book "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual," by David Pogue -

however, and I mastered the machine.

SOFTWARE

The computer comes with some great software. iTunes is the best media player on the market. I have almost 5,000 songs stored on mine. With the search function and browser display, it is easy to find a particular song. iTunes also keeps track of the number of times you've listened to a song and it allows you to rate your songs. It's easy to create a playlist. Also, burning one of those playlists onto a CD can be done with one click.

Safari is a great web browser. It has a Google search box built into the toolbar, prevents pop-up ads (I've never had one), has tabbed browsing (preventing a cluttered desktop), and allows for bookmarks to be added with one click.

iChat allows Mac users to customize their AIM and Rendezvous chat sessions in ways that the normal applications don't allow, such as adding pictures from iPhoto to their profile.

I haven't mastered iPhoto yet, but it is downloading pictures from a digital camera is as easy as plugging it into the USB port and clicking a button.

Also, Macs are less likely to get a virus or be overtaken by spyware.

The iCal and Address Book look good, but if you are going to sync a PDA with your Mac, you are better off using Palm Desktop software. Hopefully the functionality of those programs will be improved in the future though.

Finally, most of the programs work with each other. For example, if someone on my iChat buddy list is online, a green dot will appear next to a message from him or her in my Mail inbox.

I also use Microsoft Office, Quicken, Dreamweaver MX, and Palm Desktop they all work well on the Mac. Office shares files perfectly with PCs.

HARDWARE

Spend the money and get the superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-R). DVDs have more memory than CDs and blank DVD-Rs are becoming more affordable. If you are into collecting videos of concerts, a DVD-R is a must.

I'd recommend upgrading to at least 768 MB of memory and the 80 GB hard drive. Burning a DVD requires a lot of memory and can take a while this way you can use other applications while burning a DVD (on my old PC, if I was burning a CD, I couldn't use anything else). The hard drive space is really cheap. Plus, if you load your CDs on your computer, they can eat up a lot of memory, even as MP3s (my 5,000 songs take up about 25 GB).

Also, there is a lot to be said for getting the Airport Exteme card (although you can buy a third-party base station for less). I am able to browse the Internet in any room of my house well worth the extra $100 or so.

I have the 12-inch monitor, but that was because Apple hadn't released the 15-inch in the new style when I made my purchase. The 12-inch is fine it's much clearer than my old PC notebook but if I had the opportunity, I'd probably go with the bigger monitor.

DRAWBACKS

-While most software is available for Mac OS X, there are some programs that aren't (Google toolbar, Yahoo! toolbar, Kazaa, AvantGo) or minor problems in software that is available (Quicken can't access accounts on Ameritrade via Macs)

-The PowerBook doesn't have a fan, which is great for the battery, but can cause it to get a bit hot underneath where the user rests his left hand.

Regardless of those drawbacks, however, buying a Mac was an easy decision. If you have any questions about it, click on my profile and send me a e-mail.

UPDATE: After 14 months, the hard drive started making noise and system performance got slow and I couldn't run as many programs as I used to. I called Apple and had to spend $300 for them to put in a new hard drive and some other hardware. They were unable to transfer my data to my new hard drive, so I've spent the past four days reloading all of my software and applications. No idea why the hard drive went. Hence I dropped the rating from five stars to four.

I recently bought an apple powerbook laptop 12",that was listed as used but in very good condition.I was concerned about making a purchase like this from an unknown seller that seemed to be new to the site-but I trusted the Amazon site.The price was really good and the description impressive;so although I knew very little about the item I decided to risk it.I had been using a dell for about 4 or 5 years;the last 2 or 3 of which were computer hell.And I had been vowing to next time get a mac since I heard they were less aggravating in regards to things like freezing up for no reason,bogus error messages that I couldn't possibly understand,e-mail that wouldn't open for 5 minutes & then didn't like to receive or send mail some days,15minute boot-ups,and web pages(when I finally got on) that got stuck when I tried to scroll.Well, needless to say I am ecstatic! A fantastic ultra portable laptop. I bought the 12" Powerbook G4 1Ghz, and have been blown away by it. It has a good metallic design and its size is very easy to carry around, this is the major disadvantage of larger bulkier notebooks. I have had mine upgraded to 1.25 GB Ram, and the performance of applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop is great. You can even play games like Halo on it pretty well, if that is your thing. You can have up to 80GB of HD, and my advice is to buy the largest you can afford. I also have an Airport (802.11g) card installed, and it allows wireless connectivity with a pretty good range. In addition, Bluetooth built-in allowed me to use a very nice wireless mouse with it. The Keyboard is of good quality, an important feature if you have to write long documents in Word! The LCD screen is of good quality too. All in all it made a pleasant switch from my previous bulky Sony Vaio Lap. I would recommend this computer very highly.

This is the computer that turned me onto apple products. It is sincerely the best computer I have ever used, and I regret not taking better care of it. Even the newer macbooks don't hold up to this little guy. I rarely have any problems, and it's going on 7 years! It's been through so many drops, spills, and accidents, I'm amazed it keeps going. The screen is literally falling off, I've gone through three chargers and two batteries, and half the keys are missing and it still starts up faster and crashes less than my new macbook pro! It's a great, hardy little computer.
