The setup:

I normally use a Toshiba L755, which I love. However, due to circumstances nothing short of disastrous, it required repairs I couldn't manage myself. These took FOREVER. I needed a computer in a hurry, and my only option was to buy a new, inexpensive one. This is the model I chose.

The beginning:

When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised. The computer feels very well made, more so in fact than the Toshiba. First, I upgraded the memory to 8GB, which was easily done. I plugged it in, turned it on, and started the lengthy update process necessary to keep Windows happy. It completed without error. I then set about installing the software I planned to use, and expunging the bloatware, which was less than came with the L755. Heartened that this might mean there would be no teething problems, I then went to work.

The muddle:

Though not as fast, everything appeared well... at first. This did not last long.

I burn a lot of DVDs. Instructional videos, Youtube videos, home movies, work videos, etc. the quality of these is very important to me. Those I created with the G570 were a DISASTER. They locked up. They skipped. They refused to play. I was furious.

I thought Lenovo had been saving money, putting a cheap DVD burner in my machine. I upgraded to a Samsung SE-208BB, which was simple, as Lenovo clearly has thought about ease of service. This improved things a bit. Discs no longer refused to play or locked up. However, they still skipped. Fighting my desire to find a fireaxe, I then turned my attention to Windows.

I burn discs using Windows all the time. It's easy, fast, and the best programmes for burning are FREE. I know my software well, and knew I wasn't at fault. So, I started tweaking.

Nothing helped. Days and DOZENS of ruined discs later, I was far behind, and entertaining dire thoughts about 'bargain' equipment. Then I had an Idea.

The end :

I upgraded the HDD to a 750GB WD Blue. This was easy. then I popped a Ubuntu 12.04 CD in the tray, and booted to CD. I whizzed through the Install/update cycle, added the equivalent programmes, held my breath, and set to work.

POOF! Problems solved! No skippy discs, no popups begging me to 'pleasepleaseplease buy our ', no 'reduced functionality' versions of software. All was right with the world!

Wait... why isn't the BATTERY charging?!

I GIVE UP

More when I figure out what the HELL is wrong this time.

UPDATE 25 Sep, 2012:

There IS a way to keep the battery at full charge in Ubuntu!

BEFORE YOU INSTALL UBUNTU!!!: Charge the battery fully, turn OFF all LENOVO ENERGY MANAGEMENT features, even those under the 'advanced' tab, then restart the computer. Leave the laptop plugged in whilst you install and update Ububntu. Restart the computer. It should now keep the battery topped up. At least, it has for me.

There remains NO WAY to burn an acceptable DVD under Windows7.

I bought this laptop on May 2011. 5 months later the left hinge came apart. It was fixed under warranty. On October 2012 the left hinge came apart again even though this laptop is handled carefully. Local Lenovo lab says they can't do anything but fix it if I pay for it. Google revealed it is a known failure. Lenovo still refuses to fix it again. Cars are fixed under recall years after warranty expires. I expect Lenovo to do the same. Meanwhile, I offer not to buy Lenovo.

I purchased the Lenovo G570 for my daughter to use in college. After reading several reviews, I thought it would be a great and affordable computer for her. Was I ever wrong! How I overlooked all the bad reviews, I don't know.

Essentially the problem is that repeated opening and closing of the lid causes internal parts to break. Many people have this occur within the first five months of owning the computer. My daughter treats her laptop gently and so it didn't start happening to her laptop until at about seven months.

Most people on the forum have had Lenovo refuse to repair it under warranty. The best solution I've read thus far is to disassemble the computer and then glue the hinges on with epoxy! We're still trying to figure out what to do.

Other than this problem, my daughter loves her laptop. However, if you don't intend to leave your laptop open all the time, I'd recommend you look elsewhere.

Couldn't have been happier with the overall buying and setup experience of this PC. Came from amazon with a very clean operating setup, and lenovo's boot optimizer is an excellent feature.

Would have bought a 14" unit purely out of preference and habit, the offset touchpad and placement of ancilliary keys seems odd compared to every other PC we have.

...but that was all ok.. until the screen hinge levered the case of this PC open at the left rear corner as it sits in your lap. Really? It's called a laptop. People, you know, set them in their laps to type with the screen open. So, that hinge should be,, um, at least vaguely sturdy!! #fail.

Got the brown color just to be different...WOW!! Great looking. Fast, not too much add-on trash software to uninstall. Kinda wish I had gotten the i5 processor (not offered w/Blu-Ray) but this i3 is really a go getter and I'm just as happy. Boots up really quickly, never a blue screen (thanks Windows 7 64bit) and hav had no compatibility issues yet other than difficulty running an old scratchy disk of AOL 9.0. Since AOL on disk didn't load well so I just downloaded it and got the new AOL 9.5 and that runs super. I've had the item for a couple of weeks and placed Word-2003 that works great, my own Norton2010 that I already had (deleted the Norton Trial ware of same name offered). Put my ESPN, NFL, Amazon and EBay and various other web site ICONS up without a hitch. My only issue is the speaker(s) are pathetic. I searched for new drivers but have not found any. Purchased a Case Logic Model R-110 USB laptop speaker and they sound is great although the speaker is kind of awkward.

Connected to my Toshiba 62" HD via the HDMI and Blu-ray and picture and sound were excellent. Its a little clumsy and awkward what with the remote controls, mouse/keypad, and cables but possible. Upgraded my home from a "g" Wifi hotspot to an Extreme-"N" wifi and this laptop flies at 150MBps without a hitch.

Very nice keyboard. I like the IBM/Levono keyboard of my old T22 laptop better but all-in-all this is a fine machine and I recommend to anyone (except gamers). More than likely, gamers will need a separate graphics card but I've never experienced any problems with normal things.

If you want a nice perfect fitting neopreme case (w/handles) get the MICROSOFT I have already reviewed. It fits perfectly.

UPDATE: Gave R-110 to friend and got almost as good sounding but much easier handling Logitech Clip-on Z205 USB Speaker. More very happy (?) with this one. Haven't found any improved drivers for the Sony speakers, they still suck! I recorded in HD one of the NBA playoff games. Sooooooo effin great picture. Windows Media Center works like a TIVO. You can go eat or bathroom and come back and go back to point you left to continue watching and the game has been continued to be recorded. Cool stuff...

Worth buying a 3-year guarantee for it, or choosing a different one.

It worked quite well for me for a while.

Then the VAIO Care software stopped working, with no apparent way to repair or reinstall it.

I had to get used to an error message (about .NET failing) popping up every time I booted it after a few minutes, as there was not way of remedying that; plus the sound was only available after a few minutes after reboot.

The hard drive got damaged (probably our fault), and trying to read affected big files froze or slowed down the machine. Checking the drive froze the machine, and there was no meaningful progress indicator. You can reinstall the system using the built-in Assist function, but it doesn't let you do a repartitioning or deep format before re-installing the system.

The Bluray+DVD drive also stopped working after about two years, although I hardly ever transported the laptop, mostly just used it at home.

At some point, I disabled the built-in BlueTooth adapter. I recently tried to re-enable it, but it doesn't work, even after reinstalling the whole system most probably another hardware failure.

I ordered this laptop because of its legacy hardware ( serial ports, LPT ports, USB ports, and above all else, Windows xp pro)the purchase / checkout offered 2nd day delivery, yet took over 1 week to arriveAfter arriving, inspecting the laptop, it was carefully wrapped, no visible damage was present.

After putting everything together, plugging in the power cord, i get an error message that no hard drive is present, i go into the bios, and to my amazement, its still locked with a password, that no one knows-i pulled the Hard drive module out, and inspect everything, i find that the mini IDE header is missing a pin,

i emailed the seller this issue, he sends out another hard drivea week goes by, and it finally arrives, i opened the package, and notice, it does not have the replacement header that i need to make the hard drive work.

Frustrated, i get back on amazon, and search for this header adaptor, lo and behold, for 1.72 each, i buy 5 just to have them around in case i decide to buy another hard drive from these sellers that do not check everything fully.

If i had been an everyday normal 'joe-the-consumer', this would have been a disasterous exchange. i gave a low rating because, when you sell something, regardless what it looks like, it should be functional before you ship, (tested, and tried)

I purchased my D810 with windows XP refurbished from Tampa Laptops.

It is a good solid machine. The screen appears to be wider. It is a heavier machine. I notice it on those times when I need to carry it a ways. Not alot but more than some other computers. It has a very solid cabinet. Nice sized keyboard is easy to type on. Once in a while the keyboard gets warm. My battery on this used one is running around 3-1/2 hours on a charge which I consider fine. The battery of course varries on used machines due to it's condition. But this tells you that a good battery runs for a good length of time. I like the machine. I am runing lots of older vintage software like the great Lotus stuff, etc and wanted to upgrade computers but not throw out all my software that won't run on the newer Windows Systems. This was a great purchase at a nice price.

would be nice if they had sent a start up disk along with the unit. Norton either was attacked or just stopped working and now the computer is full of viruses. Tried several things to clean it up but at this point it is too far gone for that to work. the only option now is to reboot the OS and manage connections much better.

Got an email back from. The seller telling me to contact the manufacturer to resolve the issue. They are the ones that sold this unit. They are the ones that got the money. So anyone wanting to purchase o refurbished computer from this company please look anywhere else. ANYWHERE

this laptop is what it is a cobbled together, undocumented frankenstein of a notebook.

first, the good: battery life is great. not record setting, but perfectly acceptable. I was skeptical of windows 7, but it's turned out to be pretty damn solid.

the guts are quality components. i've had zero issues with any of the hardware. it's fast and just all around good.

now the bad:

this is an off brand laptop, so you wont be getting apple or dell build quality. it's a bit flimsy. the display is not good. it has an extremely limited vertical viewing angle. blacks are more gray than anything. it only looks good viewed dead on in a semi-dark room. the trackpad is inaccurate and it is not possible to disable tap-to-click. this wouldnt be a big deal except that it is very easy to brush it when typing, which will move the cursor to wherever the mouse is. this is a constant pain and the #1 thing i wish MSI would address. I have buttons for clicking, I do not need nor want tap-to click.

everything else is fine the HDMI is sweet, the optical drive is fast and capable, 3gb is plenty of RAM, and the hard drive is adequate. the keyboard is acceptable nothing special, and it takes some getting used to it being offset due to the numeric keypad.

but it's cheap. damn cheap. cheaper than any other similarly spec'd laptop. and that is its saving grace.

you have to understand, MSI is not traditionally a laptop manufacturer, they are laptop assemblers. this computer is cobbled together from whatever parts they had laying around, thus the wonky numpad keyboard and subpar trackpad, as well as lack of drivers and support. it is what it is cheap with good specs but disappointing execution, all of which can be forgiven when you consider the price. would i recommend this laptop? not really. I'd throw another $100-$200 and get a dell if I could go back. but it's not terrible. if you know cars, you know the toyota corolla is a solid vehicle. well, think of this as a geo prism, a corolla clone, rebadged and done up with a cheaper interior. but under the hood it's still a corolla.

one last gripe the friggin LEDs under the mouse buttons are bright as hell and completely useless. I covered mine up with some electrical tape.

Beside from the pro which is surprisingly cheap for a poor college student, there are tons of cons:I constantly have to restart because some internal problem . The build quality is cheap and the customer service will not do anything about it because they will blame on you for physical damage . My problem with this computer build quality is that the frame glue came off less than 1 year use. The lid have some problem with closing ( One side of the lid joint wont move) and plus, I have some hard time with keeping the lid open on it all at some angle ( and yes, within one year of use, no abuse, no dropping)

I would advice not to purchase this product AT ALL, you dont want to mess with their customer service

An excelent option, very low price and a great performance. It's easy to carry, only 4kg. The only problem it's that the battery lasts only 2:30 hours of activity, but if you customize the power saver option, and decreese the processor level to a 50% of maximum, usage, the battery last up to 4 hours.

With his celeron processor, give's an excelent option for internet and multimedia.

And inlcudes webcam and microphone built in, so you can use skype, or other videoconference with an excelent performance

Maybe others had a better luck with that vaio, but mine seems to be a lemon from the start. I regret I did not return it within 30 days I could. Now I am stuck with hours on the phone and frequent visits to Sony Style showroom where they try to fix the blue screen problem. BSOD started after month one and SONY cannot fix it. My only option is to try the warranty service 3 times and use Florida Lemon law... Sony won't exchange it, they will only fix but that is not the case so far) meantime I have no laptop since every repair takes 2 weeks... I am so disappointed since in my mind SONY was the equivalent of quality. I guess not any more....That is Vaio VPCEB44FX , stay away....

This is one of the best computers I've owned. Works and runs great. My two sons share this computer with me and love working with it. The keypad is comfortable to type on and nice having the numbers off to the side. Love the lighted keypad. Convienent when watching TV in the evening. Love everything about it.

This computer has an audio jack at the front, power set left side and usb jacks on the right. Working from home on this machine means wires everywhere creating an awkward work space. A windows key set between ctrl,fn and alt makes using adobe programs nightmarish as tapping the windows keys opens Start Menu each time. There isn't a setting to change or disable this windows key on the help site nor in Control Panel/ Ease of Access. The machine is pretty enough and cheap enough but not Practical in any way. This is a personal entertainment laptop not for work or home use.

This laptop is amazing. Sony does a great job; the Sony Imagination bundled software is great and Sony keeps it's reputation however there is a fix to the Fan problem (and I'll explain the fix) for all T series.

Pros:

1080P resolution or double the resolution of that of 720P on a 16:9 display.

Touch screen is great on Win 8; firmware has been updated. No I know Win 8 is not so great but it's a start.

Typing is fast. I have never typed so fast on a computer; the keyboard is great.

The viewing angels are average and it's easy to install (a must have) SSD.

It's very light. The battery life lasts about 4.5 hours which is fine for me.

I don't need the optical drive so I replace it with a 9.5mm 2.5" SATA 2nd HDD Hard Driver Caddy in place for the DVD Optical Bay so I have 1 HDD, 1 SSD, and 1 MSSD.

Cons:

The fan is loud and it really doesn't shoot out any really hot exhaust . The fan comes on max settings too quickly. I've had computers that have had double the heat temperature come from a vent and there seems no way that this computer should get to 70 degrees Centigrade.

There is an easy fix to this though. And that's for all T-series laptops.

Simply you need to download the latest version of fan speed control:

Right now the latest version is .14.4.6..

Download that and put it on the recommended settings on the manual. This machine has no reason not to have a bios update doing the same process.

Seriously, I've had multiple gaming computers like the Asus G53 series, The Dell XPS 16 series, etc. and they put out much higher temperatures of fan exhaust than this one by far. Maybe it gets hot because of the touchscreen running both the processor and the HD 4000 integrated graphics but don't ruin your cpu/motherboard by putting the max fan speed too low.

Once you downloaded it and put it at the Sony E series default (that's good enough) you need to set it up to automatically start up every time you turn the on button on.

Read that and you'll be all set.

Update:

The fan really does get loud. I was pulling 80 degrees centigrade while I was just using internet explorer with multiple tabs open. There is no IPS screen like the S series. I rarely use the touch screen and it does not look good in sunlight so I'm switching to an S series with IPS screen. IPS screens you can view from all angels.

I have had the laptop for two weeks, and it works excellent. Powerful, fast and Windows 8 is really not that bad.

The laptop is thin and light. The aluminum body is excellent looking and appears to be durable. The hinge is full length which I prefer for durability. Screen resolution is excellent. Touch screen works well, but you don't need to use it if you don't want. Battery life is about 4 plus hours on standard settings.

I've been buying computers since the mid-1980s. I bought the Sony VAIO about a year ago to replace a desktop computer. I liked the idea of the touchscreen and I thought I might as well upgrade to Windows 8 while I was at it. I have been sorry ever since. The touchpad/screen is too sensitive and none of the adjustments I've made have had any effect or created an improvement. The DVD device didn't read a CD. The wi-fi, which had been working, suddenly stopped. The list goes on and I'm very dissatisfied. I have an easier time with my old Dell laptop running XP it's easy to troubleshoot and fix. I just wanted to warn people that this isn't the best choice.

I was on the hunt for a laptop to replace a 3 year old HP dv7 3000, which at the time was top of the line. I mainly was intrested in the dv6 quad edition becuase of the sheer bang for your buck facotr. at less than 1,000, you get a second gen i7 sandy bridge with 1gb (upgradable to 2gb) of dedicated graphics. When it finally arrived, i was nothing short of blown away by the speed. boot up time was around 40 seconds for first time, and around 30 after that for initial power up. Battery life is around 5 hours with a 6 cell battery, which is more than decent for the horsepower this machine has. To sum it up: Looks great, works vast, and is one of the best laptops out there for less than 1,000.

I have previously owned seven HPs and two Dells, and like Dell, HP has really gone downhill in both product and customer service. CS has been gone for a long time, but when I looked at this as a replacement for a 4 year old 17.1" core duo 2.5 originally $1750 HP laptop, I was shocked at the overall poor quality in the new version. The old case was simply beautiful. The screen was crisp and clear. The keys had a very good feel and the track pad was responsive. This new model the screen is higher resolution but way lower everything else. The colors are dull and there is no real adjustment for tweaking to a personal preference, and the glare from the gloss screen is a headache in the making. With the heat reported to still be coming from the discrete graphics card I was hesitant in buying one again since that is what helped destroy my previous HP laptop. It was hot enough to make a burning wood odor come off my coffee table. Forget using it on a lap. You'd think in 4 years HP would figure out a better fan system or make a bigger heat sink? Nope. I used this and compared it to a cheaper Asus which also has a reputation for non-existant or malignant customer support, and the Asus is a better product. Shame on HP for cheaping out in the usual default to corporate greed. Bad enough that all computers are being built in China and any laptop is now basically a craptop; add in the fact that the HP computer division is supposedly being sold to a Chinese company and good luck with any future support.

I picked it for its looks and it really is gorgeous!

It is fast, the touch screen is an amazing feature so useful in so many situations, especially with Windows 8 but even when reading pdfs and browsing web pages.

The screen is bright and colorful, whites are very white. Full HD looks nice.

However, it has visible slightly darker lines on the screen (it might be a faulty screen, or it might be just the type of display) which is very annoying.

The microphone catches every tap on the the track-pad, keyboard, the body of the laptop and when on skype the other party hears it as very loud scratching, so you definitely need an external mic. And here comes the other issue the laptop comes with a single jack for both mic and headphones and if you only plug a mic it doesnt recognize it'and keeps using the internal one, so you need a full headset (headphones with a mic) to make it work. That was my work-around at least.

The keyboard has little feedback and makes it hard to type.

Oh, and the web cam is low quality.

....but this thing has to be hard reset at least once a day.

If you leave the screen on and come back to use it 20+ minutes later, you just get a black screen. You have to hold down the power button until it turns off and then power it back on.

If you surf too many tabs, eventually the system stops responding and you have to do the same thing again.

I've downloaded all of the updates from MS and Sony, but the problem persists!

Buyer beware.

I had high hopes for my first Sony computer, but this may be my last.

Let me preface by saying that I played significantly less than the usual price for this. I bought this as a return--but the computer itself was unused and SPOTLESS. Overall I payed about $630 for this and I definitely feel like it was money well spent. The specs are fantastic, the display is top notch, and it runs like a dream.

I really enjoy the functionality of the F keys, and the backlit keyboard. The aluminum casing is wonderful and so far I've had no issue of fingerprints, overheating, or scratches. Very very durable. The speakers are quality, the overall size and weight of the laptop is great. Even in a silent room, it doesn't make any noise. The touchscreen is a nice bonus and it doesn't smudge. Granted, I don't see myself using it much since I use Classic Shell rather than the app screen. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Now, for my criticism:

Because of my own personal setup, a mouse isn't something that I can use on a regular basis. That being said, the trackpad is something I am not used to. It doesn't have the proper right and left click buttons, so I often times find that it gets a little off center when I press down on the pad. Irritating, but not a huge deal. I'll adjust. I'd also like to add that the trackpad placement is awful. it'd be much easier if it were situated more to the right. I can't quite comfortably place my wrists on the edge of the computer without occasionally bumping it and sometimes clicking things. Again, just mildly irritating and I'll adjust.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: Because of some odd issues with Windows 8, I would NOT recommend updating the system. My updates froze halfway through (27/58 updates). I looked online to see if this was a common problem or if I needed to wait it out. As it turns, its a fairly common problem. I hard restarted my computer, and when I got back to the desktop, I did a system restore and opted out of updates. I don't claim to be any sort of expert (especially with Win 8), so if you prefer to operate on a fully updated OS, you may want to look into how to avoid this problem.

Given that my only issues are with the trackpad placement and Windows 8, I would give this a 4.5/5 if it were possible.

Also, to other Win 8 users out there: I would highly recommend looking into Classic Shell if you are having a difficult time adjusting.

not sure how its possible that the other persons laptop fell apart, im using this laptop my self and sold 4 of those in the last 6 month, in super durable, made out of light aluminium, it is built according to military standards, the only explanations i can see that someone tuke it apart and did not put the screws back in or worse it was drooped, i have no issues with keyboard or casing what so ever , in fact i love the keyboard, its kinda different , much easier to type then most laptops, they keys are flat and very well structured. other than that operating systems run super smooth both XP or windows7, screan is super bright and sharp, and to top it off it has a real video card not those flimsy Intel cheaps, it runs even games nicely, seriously cant say anything bad about this laptop

This laptop is a piece of junk. This is the same laptop provided to me by my employer for my daily work. For the last 12 years, I had Lenovo Thinkpad's and they were great. Then last year I got upgraded to the HP 8440p. Yeah, talk about an 'upgrade.'

I don't even know where to start. From day one, the "8" key on the keyboard was broken. If I hit that key with a certain force and a certain angle, it will pop off. Three of the four rubber pads at the bottom of the laptop that are supposed to keep it from sliding on smooth surfaces have fallen off so any time I'm typing, the laptop is moving all over the desk. On my Thinkpad, I could get ~5 hours of battery life by being aggressive with my power saver mode and dimming the screen; the HP barely get me 3 hours on a new battery. I've had to purchase 2 new batteries (in addition to the original) in a one year span to maintain a measly 3 hours battery life. And then there is the screen. There are many times during the day when I'm working at my desk where I close the lid, pick up the laptop and go to a conference room, and re-open the lid. About 10% of the time, when I re-open the lid, the screen does not come back on even though the computer is clearly still on. The only way to recover was a hard reboot. I thought maybe it was a software issue and had out IT guys look at it and they couldn't figure it out. And then magically one day the problem disappeared, after driving me nuts for 9+ months. I never had anything like this happen with my Thinkpad.

Save yourself the trouble and go buy a better laptop. HP makes great printers (I still have my LaserJet IIP from 1989) but they sure don't know how to make a good laptop.

Let me first say, this is one amazing laptop. Before I got this, I was convinced that the IBM T60 was the epitome of durability and build quality. I begrudgingly admit that this elitebook has it beat. There is no flex in the chassis of this laptop, and no keyboard flex. The keyboard strokes feel solid and full, and the keyboard light is as easy to use as the ThinkLight. The lid is built to withstand 300 pounds of pressure, and this model does have the spill-through keyboard/chassis. I really can't say enough about this laptop, it is that good. I wish they had an IPS screen option, but even the TFT screen on this is better than the T430 I looked at. If you are on the fence, just buy it!

I normally don't write reviews, but this laptop is so crappy I feel I need to warn others. My work only uses HP laptops. I recieved the 8440p as an upgrade for my HP NC6400. I looked forward to the speed and hdd increase. But this new laptop is crap.

1. The bezel around the lcd is not very secure. It feels loose and cheap. I can pull it slightly apart at the seam.

2. The esc key fell off after 2 weeks and can't be reattached. It still works when I press in the open area.

3. The express card slot stinks. Its too big so I had to buy adapters for my cards to fill the space but it makes them very flimsy.

4. After 1 month of use the hdd stopped working and is making crackling sounds.

I'm going to send this in to IT and request a different model.

The only thing I like about it is the keyboard light that pops out of the top of the lcd is very cool when working in a dark environment.

I'm a big fan of the HP HDX series. It sits at the top of their Pavilion line and is one of the best built notebooks sold in the retail channel. It's aimed solidly at consumers looking for a high end entertainment laptop. Because the material quality is well above average it's not necessarily the best value: you can get these specs for less money, just not with the same build quality. This is a good choice for someone looking for a notebook that can handle more than just web browsing. The biggest drawback of this HDX model is a slightly under powered battery and a little more weight (though again, much of that lies with the superior frame and shell).

Let's go over the specs:

CPU: The Core 2 P7550 runs two separate cores at 2.26GHz and has 3MB of on chip cache. The Core2 line is the best notebook CPU out there today and and this model this is about in the middle of the mobile Core2 line in terms of performance. At 35W it sits in the same thermal envelope as much slower chips (such as the Mobile Pentium line). Having two cores means you can run your full internet security suite and not have your computer freeze up for events like a virus scan.

MEMORY: 4GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 1066Mhz memory speed is plenty fast.

HDD: The 500GB HDD has plenty of storage, even if you like to do video encoding. The 5400RPM speed isn't the fastest but it is more reliable that 7200RPM drives.

DISPLAY: The 16in (1366×768) display looks great. Like a lot of glossy screens it's a little more susceptible to glare, but in the home it looks fantastic. There's also a HDX line with an 18inch screen.

GRAPHICS: The Nvidia GeForce GT 130M w/ 1GB of DDR2 used in this notebook is a large step up from the standard Intel 4500 graphics. It is basically a Nvidia 9600 on a newer (55nm) manufacturing process. With this notebook you can play newer 3D games at reasonable resolutions. This is still a step down from being a true "gaming notebook" but if you want to be able to do occasional 3D gaming on it you can (I should note that online 3D games like World of Warcraft run fine on this chip). If 3D gaming is important to you I would suggest looking for a notebook with something more powerful (either the Nvidia GTS and GTX line or the ATI 4800 or 4600 series). It is more than enough to handle your home entertainment needs. The only downside is it uses more power and will drain your batter faster than the standard 4500.

AUDIO: The Altec Lansing with Dolby Home Theater and Sub-Woofer is part of what sets this notebook apart. The sound is fantastic. It is rich and deep and has none of the tininess usually associated with notebook sound.

DVD/CD DRIVE: Uses the "HP Super-Multi Drive" which means it can read and write pretty much any CD or DVD format out there except for Blu Ray. The lack of Blu Ray is the main ding on the "entertainment" specs of notebook. You can get Blu Ray on other HDX-16 models or by custom ordering it from HP.

BATTERY: The 6 cell battery falls a little short. With this size screen and the upgraded graphics chip you really want a 12 cell battery (which some HDX models have). If you expect to be plugged in most of the time you probably don't care. If you expect to travel with this the 1.5-2 hour typical performance (3 max) will disappoint you.

WEIGHT: Coming in a 7.06 lbs this is slightly heavier than the next step down from HP (a DV6 comes in around 6.5 lbs) but that's mostly improved framing and heavier grade plastics. This notebook is solid.

WIRELESS: The usually Intel 5100 A/G/N supports the most common standards ("A" and "G") along with the new "N" standard. You should have no trouble connecting to wireless networks.

PORTS: This notebook has all the usual ports (USB2, Ethernet, VGA, headphones, microphones, eSATA) and a HDMI port. Thanks to the included remote you could watch DVDs on your TV (if it supports HDMI) in relative comfort. I'm not sure why you would want to foor DVDs, but if you want to use Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video On Demand, it makes it easy to download and watch movies on your TV.

So if you want a solid notebook with good video and sound this is well worth taking a lot at, especially if you want to download movies. If you are looking for a gaming notebook keep looking. If you want Blu Ray keep looking. If you just want to surf the web you don't need a computer this powerful unless you want really good sound. If battery life is important look for a model with a 12 cell battery (or custom order one from HP).

I originally wrote an extremely in depth review about this computer, but peculiarly enough, it never got published. Rather than spending hours going through the extreme level of detail I did before, I'll just summarize it by saying I've had two of these now (first one returned for a replacement), and both had 1) dead pixels and 2) a horrible rattling/crackling/blown speaker sound in the right speaker. Sent it to HP to fix it under warranty, they fixed the pixels and SAID they replaced the speaker, but the terrible rattling is still there. More troubling, the HP representative tested several of these computers at the repair center and said that they were ALL exhibiting the same problem in the right speaker (which is placed directly over the triple bass) so this may in fact be a MANUFACTURING problem. For anyone that has this laptop, please test and comment back.

Other than that, everything else is fine (minus the horrid amount of bloatware that comes on this thing). But I find it unacceptable for something that calls itself an ENTERTAINMENT laptop to be plagued by audio and video hardware flaws.

I was looking for a laptop that I could use as a mobile desktop. I do work everyday on my desktop and I needed a machine that could do what my desktop can do on the go. I have owned this machine for almost two weeks now and it has been great. The high-powered processor working alongside the high amounts of ram allow me to surf the web, do my work and computer programming, and listen to my internet radio all at the same time with no slow down at all. The hard drive is huge, so I was able to install all of my large-sized programs with no problem at all. The webcam is very good and produces a clear picture when I chat with my family and friends. Aside from performance, it looks great with its shiny titanium finish and the screen is big, bright, and clear.

My suggestion to anyone who is planning on buying this laptop is to get a 12-cell battery as so that you can get a little more life out of the machine. With the standard battery included with the laptop, it lasts about 1.5 2 hours. With the 12-cell, I got 3 3.5.

One last note... all of the computers that I have owned up until now were running 32-bit versions of windows, so I was hesitant to get a 64-bit machine. However, 64-bit machines are not that different from 32-bit machines. You won't even be able to tell the difference. (Just make sure that when you install software, you pick the 64-bit version if necessary. Some installers will differentiate for you, but just be on the lookout.

Overall, this is a great machine and i would suggest it to others.

I Made a very bad choice of buying this laptop for my business. A few days of use and in the middle of a presentation to my potential clients, the "adjust sound stop play forward" Controls started coming up automatically on my screen along with an annoying clicking sound. No Software update from HP and Microsoft would fix it. Finally, I found out from some online forums that its due to an oversensitive MEDIASMART touch panel that picks up static charges and interpreting it as human touch. A Kid suggested that I put some scotch MAGIC tape on the MEDIASMART bar and that fixed it. It even works with the tape on it.!! Next, It has a Glare friendly screen , which no matter what angle you are watching at, makes it tough to work in a room illuminated with natural daylight. You need to be in a very dimly lit room to use this screen, and then you realize that its hard to read the keys on the keyboard. Avoid this Amateur laptop for business use. Maybe a its good buy for your elementary school kid to watch ELMO or Mickey mouse movies and perhaps to write on the screen with Crayons!!

I've had the HDX 16 for several years now and the problems I encounter keep adding up.

The first problems I encountered with the laptop were problems with the touch buttons below the screen. The touch buttons enable the user to change the volume or play/rewind/stop media and other useful things. The volume button and treble/bass buttons have a fancy bar that looks like it should indicate the current volume level but don't. The buttons are also a bit slow and unresponsive and may cause frustration with needing to hit the button twice or toggling something on and off accidentally.

The second problem I encountered was with HP software. There is a lot of HP software, but the only piece of software I liked, the webcam software disappeared. I don't know how or when but one day I went to click my desktop shortcut to the webcam software and it was gone.

The third and fourth problems introduced themselves to me as I began installing and playing games on the HDX. The third problem is that the graphics card sucks. I had problems tabbing between a full screen game back to the desktop. Additionally the graphics card fails A LOT. Even playing simple internet flash games can cause the graphics card to crash and force me to stare at a blank screen for a minute as it recovers, not to mention actual computer games. Everyday I visit NVIDIAs site checking for new updates hoping the problem will be solved, and it still hasn't.

The fourth problem is the laptop cooling system. Even the first day I used my laptop I noticed a build up of heat on the left side of the laptop. Just doing simple tasks such as typing on Microsoft word or writing a negative review on Amazon I feel an abnormal amount of heat. Now this wouldn't be a big problem if I didn't play computer games. Unfortunately this is an "entertainment laptop" and I am a teenage boy and computer games are my pride and joy. I started to play Napoleon Total War and after about 10-30 minutes BAM computer shuts off. I felt my laptop and it was scalding hot. I know you might be thinking I mistook the word laptop as a computer I can sit on my lap. However, I have a cooling pad for my laptop and it STILL overheats when I play graphic intensive video games. The only compromise I have been able to find besides tying my laptop to the ceiling and letting in dangle in mid air is to let about half the laptop hang over the edge of a desk. This is the ONLY way I have been able to prevent my HDX from overheating when I play games.

Overall I know this review has been a bit negative but it is these 4 things that of slowly driven me insane while having this laptop. I mean it really drives me insane not to be able to play my laptop anywhere without hanging it off the side of a desk. I am thinking about calling HP and asking what I can do, and maybe bringing my laptop into a techie shop and getting an upgraded fan. Bottom line is this is my experience with my laptop. I don't know if all other laptops experience this problem but if they don't I recommend you forget about the HDX and go with a laptop that doesn't have a fail graphics card and overheats on a flat surface.
