This notebook could be improved in a number of ways, but since there's nothing else quite like it, I give it a full 5-stars.

Asus was supposed to release a similar notebook, as were a couple other manufacturers, but they turned out to be vaporware.

I searched high and low for a lightweight/ultraportable with a decent resolution (greater than 1366x768, this one is 1600x900) and a proper dedicated graphics card (2gb GT 730M).

The GT 730M is more than just a rebadged GT 640M as some sites have called it, it's has a higher stock clock speed (725 vs 625)putting it closer to the GT 650M and some reports have referred to the core as a GK207 vs GK107, w/ 24 ROPS vs. 16. I haven't yet figured out how to verify this, nor have I been able to get the latest drivers directly from Nvidia to load. On the subject of drivers, Gigabyte offers Windows 7 versions of all the software, drivers, and even a Windows 7 bios so you don't have to use Windows 8 if you don't want to.

The notebook really is light weight and runs quite cool. The stock msata SSD is the tried and true Crucial M4 which doesn't have the top benchmark numbers, but in real world use, it's a rocket. The notebook also has room for a second normal 7 or 9.5mm hard drive which is completely unheard of in a 'true' ultrabook. I believe the Gigabyte U2442D doesn't get to wear an "Ultrabook" sticker because it comes with an i5 instead of an i7, however the i5 is much faster than any of the low voltage dual core i7's and many of the previous regular voltage dual core i7's. i7 used to mean 4-cores with hyper-threading flagship performance, but now it just means at least $200 more on the sticker price.

A few things to consider if you're looking to purchase one of these notebooks; the aluminum lid has a gold-ish tint to it and the rest of it is just grey plastic. It doesn't really look premium and I slapped on a skin for the lid and a few stickers on the palm rest to keep it from getting scratched up too quickly. The screen is a traditional matte which is great for glare, but not so great for keeping clean or getting the sharpest colors. The notebook comes with Windows 8, which really sucks for productivity (but most computers come with Windows 8). The Nvidia Kepler architecture is great for gaming, but even with 384 Cuda cores, it sucks at openCL so GPU acceleration of programs like Matlab, Solidworks, Photoshop, Ansys, Comsol, etc aren't going to really benefit from the dedicated card like they would with an ATI/AMD dedicated card of the same level.

At the end of the day, it's a very capable, very light weight notebook for playing and getting work done. When the box arrives you will not be disapointed, the packaging is sharp and Gigabyte throws in extras like a very nice leather sleeve and a keyboard cover/screen cloth.

Had high hopes for this model, but alas -quality control is apparently a severe issue with Gigabyte's laptop line.

At the time of purchase, over two months ago, this ultrabook did occupy a unique place with features others did not have and a low price. It's poor screen quality is its one obvious fail.

However, within one week, it inexplicably failed to turn on or show any sign of life when plugged in. Gigabyte issued a RA# and it was sent back via slow UPS on their account. Two weeks later, they reported no problem and send it back.

However, the same problem occurred after 3 more days, rendering the unit useless. It was sent back again and Gigabyte tecch said they had now figured out the problem and I would have to get a whole new unit, losing my HD setup and info.

A new unit was sent to me, 6 weeks after purchase with time spent on using it amounting to less than a week.

Turned it on and there was a big dead green pixel in the middle of the screen. Haven't seen that in a new laptop for many years. With no way of fixing the totally dead pixel, I had to return it yet again.

This time I asked for a refund, which had to come form GB because they had sent a new unit and the seller could not refund for that. Getting a refund from Gigabyte is not an easy feat -seems to have to go through Taiwan management .

Nine weeks after purchase, I am left with no answer to emails about when or how the refund will be issued. Chuck, the lone man in LA handling such customer service, seems to be an honest enough guy, but Gigabyte management and policies -and obviously Quality Control -are a clear fail.

I just purchased this computer for my girlfriend, and so far she loves it. I personally don't really like Windows 8 yet, especially when using the touchpad, but that is Microsoft's problem. The computer is fast, durable, and has a good sized screen. Perfect for her, as she mainly uses it for e-mail, movies, homework, and Pinterest. One thing to note is that the touchpad has quite a texture to it. Its a little awkward and doesn't have perfect touch response, and I foresee the pits collecting grime after a while. Overall, a great computer for the price!

The battery charge is good for users who travel. The keyboard is a tad funky. It will take some getting used to. Overall good product. I would purchase again.

I'll start by saying this is a review of the product NOT the operating system (Windows 8)

Screen Has a really nice size and very nice resolutionIt's clear and only has distortion at odd screen angles.

SoundIt lacks a bit and stays on the low side making it difficult to watch movies

KeyboardIt's amply spaced but a bit bouncy, almost like it's not installed correctly, but it is, it's just a loose fit.

USB3, and comfortable

Touchpadis textured, it takes a bit of getting used to but after a little you don't notice it.

appearanceit's just a laptop, there are no pretty lights or smooth finishes, no fancy colors or bells.

WeightEasy enough to carry around, but it's still a 5 pound laptop.

I like the machine, it's perfect for email, internet, pictures and netflix. It's low priced because it's just an entry level machine.

It takes a little bit getting used to windows 8. Other then that it seems okay. The feel of it and the big screen is a plus. Just wish it was easier to use. Computers fine

I'm a recent college graduate and this was laptop was meant to replace my old one as something for work and just lounging around. Overall, it ended meeting all of my expectations.

PROs:

-The screen is massive and the resolution is really nice

-The full keyboard and number pad, to include keys for screen brightness, play, rewind/forward, sound, and wifi.

-So far has run everything I've thrown at it, inluding Chrome with 15 tabs, and some games with medium-level graphics

-Boot-up is very quick

-Initial set-up is very easy and it goes from the original box to being used in about 7 minutes

-The textured feel to the laptop makes it seem much more durable.

-There's a built-in webcam. It has pretty bad quality, but a really large scope, so you can fit a lot of stuff into view.

-Windows 8, while not my favorite OS, has a lot of built in software that can be useful (think apps on your laptop) once you start to get used to it. Then again, they take up a lot of memory and could be downloaded from the internet just as easily.

CONs:

-The keyboard is a little "sticky" sometimes. I have to push my 'A' and 'C' keys a little harder than the others for them to work, making it a little noisier and slower to type.

-Since the mousepad has a textured-feel to it, it's jumpy until you start to get used to it. Easily fixed with a USB mouse.

-The placement of the external inputs is a little weird. It seems like they put everything on the sides in an effort to keep the computer a little slimmer. This is most noticeable with the power cord, which is on the left side. All of my sockets are on the right side, so it is constantly turning the computer. The USB, headphone/mic jacks, internet hardline, and external monitor inputs are all on the right side, front too, so they very easily get in the way when you have any of them hooked up.

-The CD tray feels very flimsy and strange. When you open it, it is slow to spring open, then feels very weak and is kind of hard to grip because of the curved outside.

-Software. Namely Windows 8 and Norton Security. I understand that it isn't part of the computer, but the OS is a little hard to get used to and runs a TON of background applications (including Norton) that slow down your computer A LOT at first.

-The speakers are horrible. I normally don't care about sound at all, but it is bad enough that I notice. Not as bad with movies as with music.

Bottom line: Great computer for the price. Any problems with the laptop are easily fixable (mouse, keyboard) or you get used to (Windows 8, general layout, etc.). If you're looking for a laptop just for work or for browsing the internet, this is your laptop. If you're trying to run really extensive software or games, you need something with a little more power.

I got my new L505-S5988 a little over a week ago. I am very impresseed on how it handles many tasks in Windows 7 with no lag at all. This machine is quiet, and very cool even after hours of use. The full keboard is a nice touch and the screen is very bright and clear. The only negatives I have on this laptop is the speakers while an impressive size for a laptop they sound quite tinny. Besides that it is a fingerprint magnet. Overall with an external pair of speakers and a microfiber cloth and this is a dream machine!!!

This laptop is very powerful and peaceful. So far I am happy with everything. Haven't touch my old desktop after I received this new laptop. Toshiba laptop rocks!

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite Laptop L505-S5988 Intel Core2 Duo 2.1GHz /16"

This is my 2nd laptop. My first was a 2006 HP DV5063CL, back when the quality control dropped, but they still had a good reputation. I love this laptop. Fast, well equipped and has a great keyboard. I have always used a USB plug-in keyboard on my HP so that I had numeric keys available without the Num Lock gyrations. Well, the Satellite has a built in numeric keyboard. The touch of the keys is pleasing as well. I not only don't need my keyboard, I don't want it either.

My only complaint is the lack of quality in the speakers. They sound tinny. Even with all drivers updated. Their volume is not that great either. My HP laptop had Altec Lansing speakers, and sounded much better than the S5988.

Still, speakers are a minor point. I will use external spe.ers at home, or a USB sound D/A converter with the external speakers, or headphones at home and when I am out.

Feb, 2011 = An additional important point. Until I sat side by side with a friend at her laptop, I did not realize that this PC was designed as a CINEMA PC. It is made to play wide screen movies. Compared to a standard HP 15.4 PC, my screen is wider but not as high. Shorter by about 1 1/2 inches. The screen hight is about 7 3/4 inches. This does make it easier carry, but there is less height to all of the screens and browsers. More scrolling is needed on each page, and a full page view is a little smaller. For someone with poor eyesight or for photo editing on the go, this may not be the best choice in screen format.

I ordered a used Toshiba Satellite Laptop L505-S5988. Received in 2 days and in very good condition. Windows 7 runs pretty fast on this machine. For this price range it is well worth the money.

The only negative is that speakers suck for this laptop line. This is the problem of this model. I improved sound quality and volume to a certain extent by installing latest HDA drivers from Realtec website.

This is the worst laptop I have ever used in my entire life, bar none. The speakers are absolutely terrible and can barely be heard, even in a quiet room; the keyboard is so touchy that while you are typing on Word you are constantly hitting the mouse pad and highlighting stuff you just typed, hence erasing it; and now finally after only 1 year, my hard drive is bad and so now everything is extremely slow. I will never buy from Toshiba again because of this piece of junk. It's going up on craigslist as broken. Good riddance.

I actually purchased this laptop a week ag from Staples for about $100 less than the Amazon price. I love it! I agree, Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but the more I use it the more comfortable I am with it. I simply use the Windows 7 desktop that I can easily access from the "Metro" desktop that comes up when I first log on. Also, the Metro desktop shows all the files and program shortcuts that I have on my Windows 7 desktop. They are located over on the extreme right side of the display, and so its only takes a second to get to the programs I use...without even having to go to the Windows 7 desktop.

I love the nice, crisp display. The keyboard is like silk and it's size makes it, at least for me, very easy to use. The Fn keys are useful, and having a separate number pad is terrific. This laptop also has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 outlets, which is a real plus. The only thing that is a very slight disappointment is that the battery only last 4 hours, but considering that the battery on the 7 year old Toshiba I had been struggling with (as a second computer just for email and writing)only lasted 15 minutes, 4 hours is a breath of fresh air.

I would buy this computer over and over again. It seems to be a fantastic machine.

Additional comments two weeks later:

I still really like this machine, with just one complaint...the display has a blue cast that is impossible to get rid of, no matter how many color corrections I try. I've been able to reduce the blue cast significantly, but if I go try to reduce it further in the color cast setting or in the processor settings, the cast starts turning green or red. Since I use this computer to do some photo editing, I'll just have to make the color cast corrections (which are usually only white balance changes) with my desktop that has a 22" ViewSonic LED and is connected directly to the printer. I have tried three HP G7 laptops, two with AMD processors and one with the Intel i3 processor, and they all have the same cast, so it's the display and not the processor. If anybody has any success correcting this, let me know.

Incidentally, I LOVE Windows 8. Nearly all the low ratings for this computer are because of Windows 8 and not the computer itself. I've been through XP, Windows 7, and now Windows 8, and I think 8 is far better than the other two. Here's what I like so far:

The charms provide easy and quick access to all those files, folders, programs, and system tools that were so darn hard to find, particularly if they're in the control panel. Just type in the name of what you are looking for and the links to the item show up instantly. Very cool.

I can switch back and forth between the media window and the traditional Windows 7 desktop with a simple push of the windows button on the lower left side of the keyboard. And get this every program I install has a shortcut on the traditional desktop AND the media desktop. Since they open at least three times faster when I access them on the media desktop, I always start there. And...with some patience, I've been able to move all the programs I use to the left side of the media desktop so they are front and center on my display at startup; a piece of cake.

One aggravation is that I have not figured out how to make a shortcut to the system tools I use "create a restore point" and "computer management" to put on the desktop. If anybody knows how, please let me know because I use these tools a lot.

I have bought several lately of various brands, 2 of this one for me and my wife. This one is the fastest. Windows 8 can take some adjustment if one is not tech oriented, so I downloaded classic shell and it opened up old school familiarity with new app functionality.

This Toshiba is a great laptop for the price and it has a decent amount of memory and disk space, although you can find it cheaper elsewhere. The display is slightly larger and movies look good on it. I personally dislike Windows 8, but that's a minor problem once you get used to it. I also purchased a Toshiba 3TB external hard drive for all my movies and both work excellently.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332 17-Inch Notebook Laptop

Like others I have found this laptop for a much lower price (in my case $299 after rebate) at local brick and mortar office supply stores (Office Depot). It is last years model so it is on clearance. It runs fine and has a very, very nice screen and keyboard. It took a while to get used to the mouse pad but with a bit of tweaking of the settings it settled down OK. Still, it works much better with an external mouse but that is just my personal preference. Windows 8 took 1/2 to get used to but Toshiba provides a single click link to the traditional desktop. My fifth version of Windows so I guess I've gotten used to making transitions. So I am very, very happy. Was ready to spend up to $200 more to get a 17.3 inch screen with 500+ GB of disk and 6+ GB of RAM but didn't need to.

The worst laptop ever. Three times back to service center and they can't fix it. Now they want a technician to come to my house as though that will make a difference. Now we learn that all available technicians are off for the holidays so its now Dec 27 and we wait until Jan 2 to schedule an appointment. Have asked for a refund several times but that is just not in the cards. I will never buy from HP again (and we buy alot around here as we both work through our computers). Bad job HP, very bad job.

12/28/2012...after Peter (see his post below) emailed regarding this issue the representative that we've been dealing with all along called again. His purpose was to confirm (again) that we have an appointment to see a technician in our home to review the issue. So after several weeks of back and forth with the service center now we can wait another 10 days for a technician (they are all off for the holidays I am told). We said to Jamie again that what we want is a refund.

The best companies to deal with would have long ago taken this lemon back...companies such as Amazon and Costco would immediately end our dissatisfaction...but in this case we purchased directly from HP who only seems to care about their own internal metrics. Next step after the technician visits I will be posting the positive outcome or the videos of this Lemon Laptop will be posted on YouTube and every other social media I can find. Yes, we are upset. This was a birthday gift from my wife and she is way more upset then I am.

01/04/13...the technician invested 2 hours of his time and could not get the laptop to act up. He watched a couple of my videos but in the end determined there was nothing wrong with it. Within hours after he left the screen froze up again. i made another video and called customer support. Now we wait for a call back.

January 9, 2013 update...we have filed complaints with the BBB and Attorney Generals Office because HP cannot fix the problem and will not offer a refund or an exchange.

This computer has a fatal flaw and this flaw killed my Envy.

The lid on this laptop sticks and weight is poorly distributed (it's designed that way). It's necessary to carefully pry this thing open with both hands. Most new Ultra-books are designed to open smoothly with one hand. NOPE, NOT THIS ONE.

Try to open it with one hand at your own peril, the entire laptop lifts up and flips over.

Mine fell off the counter this way, smashed the corner and broke off a piece of the case.

OK, it's only cosmetic, but here's the other issue. Since it was delivered, I had been getting the blue screen of death (BSOD) from a failing SSD card. I was getting ready to send it into HP before "the fall." Now that it was "dropped", HP refused to fix the SSD under warranty (obviously, dropping it didn't break the SSD).

So, I spent the $60, bought an SSD card and fixed it myself everything was working great.

Then it happened...

My sister asked to borrow my new HP Envy OK Sis, no problem.

I began to demonstrate what NOT TO DO so this thing doesn't break.

The stupid piece of junk slipped off my finger about 4 inches from the counter.

Guess what, it died! From a 3-4 inch slip. Dead at 6 months old. Give me a break!

Call me an idiot for not knowing how to open a laptop, but this is just simply bad design.

In the past I bought a new HP laptop every two years.

NOT ANYMORE! I will NEVER buy another HP.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY Sleekbook 6t-1000 Laptop PC

A large display with a 1366 resolution too bad. This laptop should be offered with 1080p resolution and more people would buy it. Too bad that HP missed the boat again... But the good thing is, sometimes they listen to basic observations like this one and adapt we'll see...

PROS:

THE PRICE! Retail is $799 but you can find it for under $700 now. For what you get, it is a solid deal.

Great style! This laptop just LOOKS great, and lives up to its looks with most of its specs.

i7

Perfectly sized 15.6 inch VivoBook, not too small to strain your eyes but not TOO big to carry around.

It has a 24GB SSD along with the 500GB hard drive that makes starting up and shutting down the computer happen in ~5 seconds! Especially with Windows 8.

Touch screen is lag free and flawless! Finally works great with Windows 8 because they're FINALLY getting plenty of apps ported over.

Plenty of memory, and 8 GB of RAM. This laptop won't run slow at all.

Stays cool where your palms rest and the speakers work well.

HD Webcam

CONS:

(1366x768) Resolution. On a 15.6 inch screen, this could get frustrating if you're trying to watch super HD videos and such. It's ok, but not excellent.

Overall, I think if you can put up with the resolution or you won't be watching too many movies or doing something that requires 1080p, this is a great laptop that is well sized and decently light at 4.8 pounds for the size and price tag. It's fast, starts and shuts down quickly, touch screen is great, and it runs Windows 8 which continues to improve. Good for college students and business professionals who need a laptop, but be wary that the battery life will not go over 4-5 hours.

I own 2 of these. One of which is still new. Debating on selling it or giving it to my friend who loved it when he used mine!

Im happy with this laptop is thin and light, when I bought it I was worried about some critics about the keyboard, but I feel comfortable with it, so far.

The design is very nice and everything is working perfectly, has a i7 intel processor that is maybe more than I need, but is not easy to find a touch laptop like this for the price I paid (~620), so I decided to buy it.

I haven't tested the battery life completely, but I can estimate that is about 3.5 hours.

HP Pavilion TX1320US Entertainment 12.1' Notebook PC
Customer Ratings: 2.5 stars

11-22-2007 Update my second TX1320US has the same problem as the first one. This model has, in my opinion, a factory defect. Avoid purchasing. The defect is in the wiring harness that goes through the swivel mount and causes audible clicks to sound through the speakers when manipulating the display. You can position the screen so that the clicking repeats like someone playing a snare drum roll repeatedly. HP blew it big time on this 'tablet' which is not a true tablet, it should be called a 'touch screen laptop' as it has no synaptic pointing device. I'd downgrade this to a one star but Amazon has it set up so you cannot change your original rating. What follows is my original review:

This is my second tablet PC. I'd say my experience so far is mixed. After 12 days of use I'm going to need to exchange it for another one as there is an electrical short in the swivel mount for the screen. The laptop makes a very loud audible, "clack clack clack clack" noise when the screen is positioned at various angles. The noise comes through the speakers and can be induced or stopped instantaneously by screen angle (tilt the screen 45 degrees towards you as if you were closing the lid and stop and the noise is heard).

I am almost greatful that the screen is acting up because I was disappointed by the response of the space bar in the keyboard. I type 70 wpm and never have an issue hitting 'space'. However on this keyboard I routinely find that the space bar did not recognize my input forcing me to backspace (as I type this about every 10th space has this issue).

My 3rd complaint is the tablet stylus. I was an early adopter of the tablet, purchasing the very first Toshiba model when they first came out around 2001'ish. What I noticed immediately about this tablet's stylus is the lack of a spring to the tip. My first tablet was very responsive to different screen pressures, and it was easy to know how much pressure you were applying to the screen because of the ability to push with varying pressure. The default stylus that ships with the HP tx1320us is just a piece of plastic with a permanent type of tip. It feels harsh and unresponsive in comparison to my first tablet's stylus.

Once my exchange is finished (and should I decide to keep this laptop) I will be looking for an aftermarket tablet stylus which is unfortunate because the docking cradle for this laptops stylus is really well done.

The laptop feels quick and responsive within the VISTA OS and the screen resolution is decent. The fingerprint swiping mechanism really needs an overhaul however because it hurts to drag your finger across it. It has very sharp edges.

Overall I'd give this a 3 out of 5 assuming you don't get a lemon like I did.

(note I did an 'even exchange' on this laptop and got an identical one. The new one has a responsive keyboard and no shorts or problems with the swivel display mount. I did find out though that I will never get the reponsiveness I thought I would get from this tablet due to the fact that the screen is not interactive with the stylus in the way that many tablets are. A much better name for this laptop would be TOUCH SCREEN laptop NOT Tablet Laptop...Microsoft and HP and screwing up the 'TABLET' branding by allowing this type of device to bear that name).

I have this machine and loved it for the first year. First, the WIFI stopped working. I thought it was somehting I did; but I never worried about it since I usually plug it directly into ethernet anyway. Then I noticed it was getting very hot; again, I thought this must be normal. Then I noticed all the other people who have the same issue.

HP told me it would cost $400 to fix this computer since it wasn't under warranty; I liked the computer so I sent it back. then the fun started... it wasn't fixed by the time promised and each time I called, I spoke with someone about 10,000 miles away from the repair shop, who knew nothing about what was going on. After over a month, the last time they called me to tell me there would be a delay in getting it repaired I told them to just send it back to me. HP is horrible; they refuse to accept responsibility for selling a product they know to be defective and they don't care about their customers. I will never buy another HP product and am considering a class action lawsuit.

most of the reviews you read are right on target. battery life stinks, they have gone to the 6 cell battery for 2 hours and it kinda sticks out from the back. the inking is kinda weird. you have to press alot harder than i thought to get it to be any kind of usable. the screen has glare. there is no question about it.

it is hard to believe that after all that i still find it a very nice laptop. the size is very good and compact. the battery sticks out but doesn't really bother you as much as it should. the touch screen is not great but i think it does have it's uses. the glare can sometimes be a problem but it is a good screen. i probably would have liked a laptop with a better screen but then i would not have all that inkking to play with. what i am most impressed with is it's power. it really handles everything very smooth. the tiny remote that hides into the express card slot is a great added feature.

would i buy it again: yes

could i have done better: probably but not at this price

as i stated in the title i think what sums it all up is that you get what you pay for. to have better battery life and screen i am sure you would have to plunk down another grand. so till them i'll beat this around town!

I loved this computer when I first got it had technical issue down the line, that the computer froze on me just went black. Took it in for repairs and the guy said it would be cheaper if I just bought a new one.

I am writing this review on my Inspiron. Love IT. Has everything you need in a lightweight laptop. Plus the size and extras that you don't get with a notebook. I am very glad I made this purchase and would do it again.

I bought this used and the model I got was actually a 3520 which was noted by the seller. When I got it, the physical appearance was better that I had expected. It looked new. I like the speed. It's much faster than my old laptop. The mouse pad and keyboard can be very annoying though. They're all over the place and doing own thing when I'm trying to use them. That's the only flaw I find right now. Other than that, I love this computer and I would definitely buy it even if I had known about the mouse and keyboard before. I think it was worth the price. So far so good. Hope I don't run into any issues in the long run.
