My computer broke after 4 months and it was the fan and asked me to sign off and return it to manufacturer. When I have to return to the manufacturer, I have to pay for shipping. Why do I have to pay for shipping obviously the computer is defective and it is under warranty. The shipping comes with an option to mail it by yourself or with their glorified laptop box and the confirmation receipt for $24.99. What a big rip off!

I love my laptop. the new windows 2008 is way different from anything I've ever experienced. Its at times sublime and simple, and at other times very weird and a little mind boggling. However I do honestly like it and enjoy using it. This laptop runs smoothly and facebook games are no problem on it.

This computer is good and work is excellent, however the new system (windows 8) is annoying. If you are trying to buy a new laptop that would be a good choice but try to stick with (windows 7).

I love the entire unit except for the key board seems kind of flimsy in its construction. Time will tell. Other wise excellent.

Samsung NP700Z5A-S03US 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

Just received mine and finished going through setup. Not too much crapware installed. Nice option during setup to set partition sizes.

Out of the box Windows Experience Index: 5.9.

Processor: 7.5

RAM: 7.6

Graphics: 6.1

Gaming Graphics: 6.1

Hard disk: 5.9

I wish the arrow keys were a bit larger maybe 3/4 size (if not full size) instead of the 1/2 size that they are (on the other hand, I need to remember that the numeric keypad does double duty with full size navigation keys). I would have preferred to have power connection in the rear rather than the side.

Update Dec 13: The wifi antenna is giving me noticeably worse performance than my previous laptop. Working from the same chair, my 5 year old Dell D620 was getting link speeds of 36-48Mbps. This laptop is getting 5-18Mbps. Loss of 1 star.

Update Dec 14: There's no BREAK key on the keyboard! This forces you to use the mouse to enter/leave full screen remote desktop (instead of ctrl+alt+break). No ctrl+break either. The touchpad is taking some getting used to. It produces an audible click, but the force required to produce the audible is less than the force required for a mouse click to actually register with the OS need to see if that can be adjusted. The display has an ambient light sensor near the delete/home/end/page-up/page-down keys. Using those keys causes the display to dim. Disable the sensor via the easy settings apps.

Figured out the problem with the touchpad. It has a deadzone that is about 3/4" inch long by 1/2" tall. The deadzone is located on the left half of the bottom edge. The right-half works fine for right-click. Left-click is a bad experience. No clicks are ever registered in that zone even though the pad does make an audible click.

The external power supply isn't too large. But it makes a heck of a lot of noise even though it is on the floor underneath a table. I thought I was hearing clicking of disk drive head movement. Nope, the power supply makes a staticy-clicking sound whenever I alt+tab between windows. That sound is also made when using arrows keys to move up and down lists or when using the mouse to reposition scrollbars.

The bottom of the laptop is very smooth/slick. Keeps sliding around on my legs and requires that I apply downward force with my palms. I'll need to put some textured tape on the bottom.

Starting to regret this purchase...

Update Dec 15: The deadzone on the touchpad is getting smaller. But the lower right corner of the touchpad feels like it has gotten a flat tire. It is now noticeably lower than the rest of the touchpad and right-clicks are more difficult there as there is almost no travel left for clicks.

I now understand what the other reviewer wrote about jumpy cursor. The problem is due to the deadzone. When I do full left-right sweeps on the touchpad, it is very responsive except over the deadzone. Then the cursor hiccups it doesn't jump, it just stops moving, then starts moving again when my finger makes it to the other side of the deadzone.

I really want to like this machine (all the features are there and the form-factor is fantastic 1600x900 in a small 15 inches), but the wifi performance and touchpad durability/performance are killing it for me. Maybe this will also turn into a review of Samsung repair service.

Got AutoHotKey to map CapsLock to Break. Search for the "How to add a Pause/Break key to a keyboard that doesn't have one?" question at superuser com.

At every new user session, there are like 4 or 5 samsung apps (battery, easy settings, harddisk, ...) that require UAC elevation when you login if using a standard Windows account. Administrative accounts are only prompted 2 or 3 times. All of these apps are scheduled tasks that are triggered by login.

And the wifi performance still stinks.

Update Dec 17: I like the display and hardware (other than the wifi and the busted touchpad). I'll buy a new router to see if wifi performance improves. The touchpad will need repair, but I don't want to part with it quite yet. The dmhkcore.exe app that provides oem fn key functionality does not work properly with standard user accounts. It needs to be terminated and then restarted with admin privileges in order for fn+(f1, f2, f3 or f12) to work correctly (the other fn key combinations do work without admin privileges).

Update Dec 20: I got a new Netgear WNDR4000 dual-band N router (the old Linksys router did G). Wifi link speed improved but is still on average lower than my old laptop from my working position (read that as: the N performance of my new laptop is slightly lower than the G performance of my old laptop). If I move about 12 feet closer to the router, then I start to see what N is really about.

Update Dec 21: I checked out the B model that was on display at Best Buy. The touchpad is the same but that one did not have the deadzone that mine has. It does have a similar flat-tire right-click area.

Update Jan 6: check out the samsung forum over at notebookreview dot com.

Update Jan 18: This laptop does not support OpenGL running on the AMD graphics card. See the forum over at notebookreview. /samsung/630666-series-7-chronos-all-:models-push-samsung-implement-fixed-mode-bios-23.html#post8247924 and /samsung/630666-series-7-chronos-all-models-push-samsung-implement-fixed-mode-bios-23.html#post8248124

Update Feb 17: OpenGL issue is resolved with just released drivers. I removed the 4GB stick and replaced with 8GB now I have a total of 12GB. Nice.

Our biggest concern before buying this Samsung Series 7 laptop was the horror stories relating to poor Wi-Fi performance for units equipped with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card.

But a family member wanted it and asked me to set it up. I have now had a chance to use it for the last 6 weeks.

Fortunately Wi-Fi turned out to be OK (details below).

This laptop is fast, quiet and runs cool. The matte anti-glare display is very pleasing and bright.

It is a pleasure to use, the backlit keyboard is a must, no more fumbling in the dark.

It's also great that it is equipped with a full size HDMI port for connecting to a TV etc. By the way, it switches automatically to the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics board when plugging into the HDMI.

Two of the three USB ports are USB 3.0 (great for fast data transfer to external drives)

It has a very large TrackPad which obeys somewhat similar hand-gestures you may have become used to from smart phone displays. I am a mouse fan and turn the pad off because my thumbs rest on it when I type making the cursor jump all over.

This Series 7 SO3US model comes with Win 7 Pro and a factory recovery disk that allows you to do a clean install (nice touch and almost unheard of these days).

The -SO3US model may be the best value as compared to the other models -S0AUS, -S0BUS, -S04US, -S09US etc. because the S03 comes with the maximum 8GB RAM, 1GB of dedicated graphics memory and Win 7 Professional already installed (although one of the other models has 1TB HDD).

It has 8 GB of RAM and a 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD.

This Series 7 is faster than a typical PC equipped with HDD (Hard Disk Drive) because Samsung equipped the motherboard with an 8GB SSD (Solid State Drive) used for faster execution of programs and boot-up (as compared to a PC with HDD only).

The optical drive loads the DVD automatically when partly inserted into the slot (similar to a Mac). Push Fn and Delete simultaneously to eject (not mentioned in the Quick Start instructions).

I personally prefer the old fashioned mechanical tray-loader with a push button for opening. The disadvantage of the slot loader type is that it may not accept the small diameter CDs often containing drivers for accessories (I did not dare try).

But I guess it is a matter of preference because you may prefer to download drivers from the manufacturer(s) website which will ensure that you always get the latest/updated version.

WI-FI PERFORMANCE

As mentioned our biggest concern before buying was the horror stories relating to poor Wi-Fi performance of Samsung Series 7 laptops equipped with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card.

The first thing I did after opening the box was to test the Wi-Fi signal strength using inSSDer 2.1 (free software). A great tool, it will show you all the routers in your area including signal strength (and much more).

My hart almost stopped when comparing the 15" Series 7 with my own 17" Samsung RF711 S03US.

I could only see 3 routers on the 15" Series 7 whereas I could see at least 16 routers on the 17". Also the signal intensity measured in dB (decibel) was significantly stronger on the 17" (a smaller negative number indicates higher signal strength = closer to zero).

Any difference is significant as 3 dB increase represent a DOUBLING in strength.

I was ready to pack it up and send it back but decided to put it to the test using "LAN Speed Test" a highly effective program to map and troubleshoot transfer speeds in your network.

To my surprise the 15" with the Broadcom Wi-Fi board did better over "long" distances compared to the 17" with the Intel Wi-Fi board. As you will notice the 17" did better at short distances where the speed was 1.5 to 2 times higher but "relatively poorly" at longer distances.

In my opinion the 15" Samsung Series 7 with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card came out as the winner in these tests.

YOU CAN CLICK ON COMMENTS BELOW THIS REVIEW TO SEE THE ACTUAL TEST RESULTS.

SSD UPGRADE

The computer was fast in the factory configuration however if you desire EXTREME SPEED or longer battery life you can replace the original HDD with a SSD.

This is exactly what we did to this laptop and boy it's fast!

To find out how it's done click on this link .... Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC512N/AM 512 GB 2.5 Inch SATA III MLC Internal SSD Laptop Kit with Norton Ghost 15 and search in the reviews for the heading: "NEED FOR SPEED! You got it... and without losing the factory F4 recovery option. HERE IS HOW!"

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS LAPTOP TO A FRIEND?

Absolutely, the factory configuration and performance is excellent. It is very thin, light and perfect for travel.

Only users that need to manipulate large graphics/video files or perhaps have been "spoiled" by SSD systems may want to consider a SSD upgrade. (This category will also want their computers connected via a wired network).

Some early versions of the Series 7 laptops that hit the market may have Wi-Fi issues (as reported in some early reviews and complaints all over the internet) however if you have problems, the first thing to do would be to verify that you have the latest drivers (I have added the Driver details and HOW TO DO THE TEST as a comment below this review).

Before this purchase, we compared a lot of different laptops and eventually ended up with this one over the Sony Series S VAIO laptop. The Sonys (in the store) were running so hot that the back was unpleasant to the touch.

A couple of important points

This 7 Series is up and running in TWO SECONDS from sleep mode and a reboot takes 22 seconds.

You only reboot once a week when you use the Fast Start feature (it will ask you once a week).

Also the backlit keyboard is fast and pleasant.

I hope this review can bring some facts to the table regarding the ongoing Intel/Broadcom Wi-Fi discussion and also help you find the right laptop.

I've used Desktop PCs for as long as I could remember and this is the first laptop I've ever purchased. However I did tons of research before I purchased this machine. So as a new laptop user, I just want to say I'm pleased I made the change to mobile computing.

The laptop has a lot pros, but it also has some cons that really stand out. The hardware itself is solid. Aluminum build with a clean brushed look on top. The keyboard is very easy to type on, but the edge of the laptop is sharp and it digs into your wrist while your typing. It's more than a minor annoyance. You'll find yourself lifting your wrist off (mainly your right wrist) to see the marks the edge leaves behind. I'm not going to lie, the edge is sharp enough to put in some pain. I suggest wearing a wrist band while typing.

Another issue that bugged me a little bit was the video graphics. If you don't optimize the graphics to play videos off the web, such as Facebook videos, the video itself will get scrambled. It will continue to play, as you'll still hear the audio, but the video will be glitched. And it just won't happen once. It will continue to happen until you go into the Catalyst Control Center and deal with the issue.

Seeing that I'm coming from a desktop PC, I really don't have much to compare the battery life to. But from using the computer for over 6 hours continuously, with WiFi on, I can say that it's sufficient enough to get you through a full day's worth of work.

The backlit keyboard is beautiful, and the display is straight up gorgeous. The "max screen" technology they added to the display really helps it stand out among other laptops. The viewing angles, however could have been a little better.

For the price of the laptop, I wish a BluRay player added instead of a DVD writer. But in the end, you'll be trading the BluRay for the newest i7 quad core processor, and a top the line graphics card. So in my opinion it evens out. Besides, who uses physical discs for anything anymore? :P

I haven't played any games on this yet so I really can't say much about the graphics itself.

Pros

Backlit keyboard

Fast start up from cold start or sleep

Sleek look

NumPad

Slot load Disc Drive instead of Tray Load

Long Battery Life

Cons

Edge of laptop digs into wrist, leaving marks

Graphics aren't set up out of the box

No BluRay Drive

Jumpy mouse

I would Recommend this item to others.

Honest reviews on Samsung NP700Z5A-S03US 15.6-Inch Laptop

There is a common issue with the space key on this laptop in that pressing it on the edge will often not register even if you press really hard. This is incredibly irritating for a touch typist, but today I solved the problem on my laptop! So if you have the same issue see my video on the quick fix over at . Basically you just need to stick a square of paper between the space bar and its pressure sensor.

Also note that this S03US version is functionally exactly the same as the S01US version, with the only difference being that the first 4GB of RAM is permanently attached to the motherboard on the S03US. The S02US and S04US are likewise functionally identical. The Best Buy version (I don't know the product code) is completely different though. I have no idea why anyone would buy that one.

Among the positives for this laptop are its speedy CPU and GPU, readable resolution on the bright non-reflective 15" display, light weight, stylish form factor, really superb battery life, a great backlit keyboard (once the space key problem is resolved), and a good amount of RAM and hard drive storage.

Because the positives are so great I am giving this laptop 5 stars even though it has several negatives.

First, the space key issue. This is a quality control issue that should have never occurred, and I hope Samsung will send new space bar keys to all the people who bought this laptop. But until then, you can try the quick fix I referenced above.

The choice of DVD instead of blu-ray is odd and perplexing. However, I so rarely use even the DVD and to be honest I would probably never use blu-ray if it were included, so as strange as it is that the feature is missing, I don't mind.

I am not pleased with the choice of the broadcom wifi, which does not support 5ghz wifi. I have opened up this laptop, which is very easy (close the LCD, flip it over, remove the ten screws on bottom, then flip it back over, open the LCD and gently pry the case shell loose along the edges and then close the LCD and flip it over again and gently pull the bottom off), and replacing the broadcom wifi adapter with the Intel 6230 part should be very easy [SEE EDIT BELOW]. There are only 2 antenna wires, so getting the 3 antenna version would be pointless. Also, be sure to get the one with bluetooth if you try this, otherwise you will lose bluetooth since it is provided by the broadcom wifi adapter.

The webcam camera does not work well in low light. Meh. Turn on a light, I guess.

I use the touch pad as little as possible and prefer to use a mouse. It seems to work alright for me when I need it, but I sometimes disable it while typing so I can rest my palms while typing.

Overall the negatives are not a big deal for me.

Edit Dec-2012: It is indeed very easy to replace the broadcom wifi/bluetooth adapter with the Intel 6230 part. Do NOT get the newer Intel 6235 part as it WILL NOT WORK, as I discovered. Some people have also reported issues with getting the 6230 to work, but the trick is to uninstall all Broadcom software related to the wifi/bluetooth BEFORE installing the 6230. This very importantly includes the WIDCOMM Bluetooth SOftware software. You should also download the Intel drivers for the 6230, and install them after you have removed the Broadcom software. Then open up the laptop and swap the parts and reboot. Your mileage may vary, but it worked for me.

I can tell you right now, this computer is poorly designed and poorly serviced. My laptop has already been back to Samsung THREE TIMES!! The space bar has never worked right! I type with my hands in an upright position and usually only tap the outside edges of the space bar. If you do not hit the space bar within 1 inch of exact center, IT DOESN'T WORK!

The first time I sent my Laptop back it was due to HD failure.

The second time was because the DVD drive was grinding and failing

This time my Video card went out..

SAMSUNG'S RESPONSE: Samsung would like to provide you with an exchange offer of Model: NP700Z5C-S02US.

Based on the features and specifications of your original unit Samsung feels that this is the most comparable unit based on our inventory.

THIS IS A DOWNGRADE!!!

I offered to pay the difference to let me upgrade to a newer version. Their answer was: NO how about a refund??

The worst part is.. I wanted to love this computer, it was my first laptop purchase in years.

If you care at all about your sanity, do everything you can to avoid buying this computer and supporting this company.

I bought an HP envy m6 at Best Buy about four months ago (June 2013) and it seemed a capable little machine, definitely good for the price.

Windows 8 was a big negative, but almost all new laptops come with it installed now, and there have been some improvements made with 8.1.

Last week the laptop stopped recognizing my battery and would not charge it. I wasted about six hours troubleshooting this issue myself, and then went to HP support since I was still under the manufacturers warranty. After an hour on the phone, they told me that the battery had died and sent me a new one that arrived in less than 48 hours. The new battery did not fix the problem. Unfortunately, the only other possibility at this point is that the part of the motherboard that detects the battery had become defective somehow. I suspected this was the problem when initially troubleshooting this issue, as my google searches revealed that this has been an issue for HP since Windows 7. Apparently their laptops heat up and burn out the diode that detects the battery.

Obviously this issue won't effect everyone, but it will likely effect some people. Here is my explanation for the three star rating:

It would have been five stars based on "bang for the buck" performance but...

1 star: No linux support for drivers. This is bad for developers and other technical types. You CAN install Linux / dual boot to Linux on this device, but some features will not work, especially dual monitor display.

-1 star: Motherboard burned out, and this had been a long term issue for HP that they've yet to resolve. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this laptop, especially if you're a developer. I'm currently creating a new image backup so that I can send my new laptop back to HP for who knows how long for a replacement.

In all... its okay, but you're rolling the dice if you purchase this product. I wouldn't recommend it.

Best Deals for ThinkPad T530 23594LU 15.6" LED Notebook - Intel - Core i5 i5-3230M

I recently purchased a Lenovo Think Pad T530 for my insurance and securities business. I bought this machine because it seemed to be set up for business use. So many of the new laptops are built for gamers and people who want to watch movies or TV. On a recent business road trip, a colleague also had a brand new laptop. But his was built for fast response on video and games and didn't have the 15 pin plug-in that we needed to run a Power Point projector. Fortunately, my Lenovo was set up to run the projector and saved the day.

The Lenovo doesn't have the glossy screen (a plus for me), the lightning quick speed, or some of the fun bells and whistles. But it works extremely well for what I do; working with clients one-on-one and doing group presentations. The one addition I have purchased is a wireless mouse. I find the touch pad a bit too sensitive at times and using the mouse gets around that problem.

In summary, if you're looking for the newest, hottest machine for all the fun stuff, look elsewhere. But if you want a laptop that reliably performs business functions with a long battery life, the Lenovo fills the bill.

This is one honking dinosaur of a laptop but that does not mean it is a bad laptop. It has all the things needed to compute seamlessly for the time being and battery life is good as I get about 4 hours on regular settings. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a laptop for work.

The design is great, best for business, System run fluently. The price was decreased. My company equipe this laptop for advance staff. We all feel comfortable with this machine. Every programs we need all run good on T530. The battery is very long (9 cells). But the screen 15.6 inch is quite large with me. Because if I work at desk, I can extend the screen via a monitor. So I prefer a laptop with 13".

Been building systems, deploying systems for over 20 years, and so far, for the past 3 years...our company has been buying Elitebook notebooks for our team, and we've not had a single unit fail, require an O/S rebuild, etc. All Vista and Win7 Enterprise installed right after purchases, and so far so good. This particular model is the smallest we've bought, and it's a fast PC with very long battery life and it's packed with more disk than a corporate user will ever need. Just Remember....NO internal DVD drive in this unit. We don't allow users to install their own software, and so the DVD drive just becomes a power using add on that is seldom used.

This is a fantastic laptop for those that have to move around a lot... it's combination of size and weight make it our go-to laptop for physicians to do their rounding at the hospital with.

Battery life is great, and you can even purchase a 9-cell battery for even more life (though as expected, it adds more weight).

I cannot comment on HP support as we have not yet had to get these laptops repaired, and we have over 50 of them in use currently for the better part of a year in a healthcare setting.

Has quite a few nifty features on them and I like the touchpad over the "eraser" pointer that you get on most small laptops.

Best Deals for HP EliteBook 2540p XT931UT 12.1-Inch Laptop

After a week of use I am satisfied with this laptop. Since I already own a slim, USB-powered DVD writer, the lack of built-in DVD is no problem.

Pros include:

* very easily upgradeable to 6GB RAM,

* Windows 7 Pro,

* good battery life (how good is very dependent on what apps are running),

* runs very quiet,

* usually runs fast,

* using the fingerprint reader is more fun than typing passwords,

* supports hard drive encryption,

* allows me to work productively sitting in cramped airline seats,

* very light weight,

* lots of useful ports,

* SD card reader,

* ambient light sensor

* ...

Cons include:

* I wish they left out the pointing stick and its corresponding mouse buttons, allowing the touchpad to be bigger;

* while the laptop generally runs cool, it shoots a stream of warm/hot air out its right side;

* upgrading to 8GB requires more work, since one DIMM is located near the keyboard, and the other near the back of the laptop;

* the weight is unbalanced and the cover smooth, so it is a bit hard to carry for such a light laptop;

* I had to download some software update to make the laptop wake reliably from sleep mode.

The information under product detail has not been reviewed. The size of the computer is not 16 inches it weighs more than 3 pounds. So the description is misleading and lacks the information easily available on HP's web site. This is clearly the wrong forum to buy a complicated product like the HP2540p.

I've had this laptop for about a year and I love it. Upgraded the OS to Windows 7 Professional and got the Toshiba External CD Rom Drive. Not one problem getting everything to work right out of the box.

I do use a separate keyboard and mouse when at my desk but only the mouse when I leave the office. Also got speakers so I can hear my music on Pandora as the built in speakers sound soft to me, but it may be my ears and not Toshiba's fault. The screen is good for when on the road but I'd add an external monitor (20" min.) for office use. Also make sure to get a good fan for it to sit on to help keep it cool and extend the life of the battery and PC.

Have lots of software on it: Windows 2007, ACT 2011 and Sage MAS 90/200 and Sage Peachtree on it with no problems. As a software reseller, I get to run lots of software that most laptop users don't usually see. Very data intense and it runs all of them like a charm.

What a dream machine. And I like the red color, too. These machines have come a LONG WAY since 1983 when I was using and selling IBM PC clones back in the 1980's. Would you believe $5,000 for a 64 K memory and 20 MB Hard drive orange or green letter screen (no color back then and no pictures, either!) I was also a early Mac Developer and have one of the original MAC 128 K machines in my attic, so I've seen and tried lots of computers.

How can you go wrong with at Toshiba, who pretty much invented the laptop category? Just make sure to treat it with lots of TLC and it will return the favor to you.

I bought this computer at Best Buy in June, 2010. I bought it b/c it was small, lightweight and had good specs. The initial problems I've had were common to other laptops (PCs) that I've had very low sound even when volume turned all the way up, lots of crapware installed by Toshiba and a propensity for the computer to get hotter than a car's engine.

The real problems came in August, 2010, when Toshiba issued a recall of this series of laptops due to a BIOS issue which causes the computer to overheat by the AC power input. The official word was that it was a BIOS issue but others online have speculated the real culprit was faulty hardware. Anyway, their instructions were to install the new BIOS on your own and if it was successful, you'd be ok, but if not, you'd have to send your computer back to them. I've heard many horror stories about folks sending their computers back in for repairs and them coming back in worse shape, often after a significant period of time.

I followed their instructions though and the BIOS update worked. However, just a few days ago, I got a pop-up message telling me a faulty BIOS has been detected and that the computer would no longer receive power from the AC adapter, and to call their customer service number.

The customer service center was in Manila in the Philipines and the call center reps were impossible to understand which made it useless to talk with them about what to do.

Apparently though, the message I received about a faulty BIOS was probably incorrect b/c the computer did not lose the ability to receive power via the AC adapter. I did slightly burn myself from the AC power area getting too hot however.

When I tried to get assistance from Toshiba's corporate office, I was given the runaround and directed back to the automated number set to handle the recall of this POS laptop. I did not feel like sending a year old laptop back for an indeterminate amount of time that probably wouldn't even fix my computer. What would I do for work while I was without a laptop? If your automobile has a recall due to a manufacturer defect, they would give you a loaner car while your car is repaired. Computers are just as vital these days.

Needless to say, I didn't send it in and it appears to be working...for now. I will absolutely never purchase another Toshiba product. I don't know what kind I'll buy since all of the manufacturers seem to have issues with shoddy hardware, off-shored customer "support" and don't stand behind their products once you've paid them.

I would give this laptop, and Toshiba, zero stars if I could.

Best Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop Deals

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

This is the third sub-$400 Lenovo laptop I've owned in the past 3 years (since 2009). I've purchased and resold one annually. The first was a 15-inch model (forgot which one exactly) with no number keypad and the second was a G560.

All three had dual-core Intels running under the hood, 4 gigabytes of RAM, and 320Gb hard drives. All were made entirely of plastic and came in essentially the same simple packaging.

In terms of build, I am under the impression that all Lenovos are very solidly built and the plastic feels adequate.

The sub-$400, and now sub-$300, Lenovo laptop product line has progressively become lighter, quieter, and cooler.

I think about my first Lenovo (the one that I can't remember the model number for); it was not terribly light, the fan was loud enough that it was audible from several feet away, and after 45 minutes to an hour, was hot enough to cause discomfort in certain parts underneath.

The Lenovo G560, although a definite improvement in terms of weight and fan noise, still ran hot.

This new Lenovo G580 is not only the lightest Lenovo I've owned thus far, it's also completely silent. After using it for several hours, the fan runs completely silently. Perhaps the biggest improvement in the 580 is the absolute lack of heat! This puppy runs completely cool, even after several hours of continuous use!!

I purchased mine from Fry's on Nov. 7th for $288 ($328 with tax) and I couldn't be happier.

Any potential buyers should note that this model's Core2Duo processor is more than sufficient for web browsing, Word and Excel processing, and even playing high-quality Blu-Ray discs!

I mostly use this laptop for CAD drawing (I produce architectural blueprints using AutoCAD 2007). I've even install the Adobe Master Suite CS6 and although it's nothing like my desktop Core i7 (2600K), this laptop surpassed all my performance expectations.

I was looking for a value laptop but not a cheapo laptop that would struggle to run things like HD YouTube. I settled on the G580 and so far it's met my expectations. I am not going to review Windows 8 (I happen to like it), this is a hardware review only.

Pros:

Nice bright colorful screen

Quality build, feels sturdy, not cheap even though its a value laptop

Runs very quiet and cool

Not Ultrabook thin but its pretty light and thin enough for a casual user

Good keyboard, works well and easy to type on. Like having 10 digit keypad

Touch pad works fine, messed with a little. Still prefer usb mouse but it works fine

Most needed ports-hdmi, sd card, usb 3.0

Color is nice (but see cons)

Speakers sound pretty full (but see cons)

Not the top of the line processor but it's zippy for casual use (Office, Internet, Flash games, etc.)

Plays 1080P HD and Flash content easily

Battery life is pretty good, it probably goes 3.5 hours with light moderate use and decent settings

Webcam works fine, quality seems good

Cons:

Color and design is nice but it's a fingerprint magnet, don't even bother trying to wipe it clean daily (or every 5 minutes it seems)

Speakers sound pretty decent and full for a laptop, but I am not a big fan of speakers placed in the front underneath. Prefer them up top near the screen. Sounds more natural to me, this is only minor and a personal preference of mine they still sound pretty good for laptop speakers.

Placement of usb 2.0 port, too close to power plug, again, minor annoyance. Use that port for something like your nano usb mouse.

It's nice that Lenovo makes it easy to setup for recovery but I would still prefer having physical media of some kind. But better embrace it as that's the way the worlds moving. There are no Windows discs or any discs for that matter included.

A lot of bloatware, but what PC brand doesn't come loaded with tons of unnecessary crap? Again minor, just go on your uninstall rage fest.

I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend this laptop if you are like me and need a good value laptop without having to compromise too much performance. Cons are mostly minor (except for fingerprints, it annoys me) but overall I think you will be very happy with the quality of Lenovo and the value performance you get with this G580.

I just received my computer and I am completely in love with it. Windows 8 is amazing and this computer its amazing too. I love the camera to take pictures and videos. Its not heavy and the color its nice too. I was doubting about this laptop, but I think so far its great! Totally recommended you get a lot for the price you pay

Honest reviews on Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop

I'm on my new Lenovo right now as I type this. It's a great laptop and has a ton of value for what you pay. The only thing I had a hard time getting used to was the keyboard. I've never had a laptop with a numerical pad on the right, so I've had to learn to shift everything to the left when typing. No biggie though, after a few days of typing it wasn't an issue. I'm so glad I took a chance on this laptop!

Laptop was nicely priced. It does everything I want it to, but HDMI port stopped working after a few weeks of use. May return it, or pay to have it repaired, as everything else is exactly what I want.

I have enjoyed using this laptop for about 6 months. Intel i5 processor is fast and 6GB of RAM makes multitasking a breeze. Start up is fast, about 20 seconds until fingerprint reader. Really like the fingerprint reader feature, keeps data quite secure. Keyboard has nice feel and touchpad is very responsive. Only change would be a larger delete key. The fit and finish is excellent. The brushed gunmetal aluminum cover and keyboard looks great. Appearance is much better than plastic. Highly recommend this laptop.

I type A LOT. This computer is NOT one I'd recommend if you also type a lot. The keyboard layout is not so great the shift key on the right is much smaller than a standard shift key. I thought I'd adjust to this, but after having the computer for almost a month, I'm still having to search for the shift key while typing, and I often hit the arrow-up key instead, which then requires me to readjust my position in the text I'm typing. Really an unnecessarily bad feature. However, this I can handle in comparison to the touchpad. My goodness!! This thing has a mind of it's own! I'll want to scroll down and it will instead enlarge the view of my screen. I'll want to enlarge the view of my screen and it will instead scroll down. I cannot copy things the way I'd like to either instead of highlighting a line of text to copy, the touchpad will interpret my attempts at highlighting as me wanting to pull and drag the text elsewhere (which might be all right if I was able to highlight an entire line before it attempts to do this). Totally useless. All this being said, I have to add that it's a fast machine. This is why I gave it 3 stars. It's worth the money in that respect for sure (I bought mine new for a little over $500). If you don't mind fumbling with a possessed touchpad, and having to search for the shift key over and over again (which slows down typing and leads to errors), then I'd recommend this laptop. But, if you type a lot or enjoy properly navigating with a touchpad mouse, DO NOT GET THIS LAPTOP!!

Toshiba Satellite A105-s2141 Review

I've had my Toshiba a105 for about 4 years now. I haven't had any issues with it. It initially came with Windows Vista, but I upgraded it to Windows 7 professional with no problem. I haven't had any problems with my DVD drive. Never had a blue screen or any sort of malfunction. I like to do a lot of customization so I have rainmeter running on it, rocketdock and a host of other application that run at startup and my toshiba hums along with no issues. I like that I can log in to my computer just by scanning any finger with the Biometric scanner on the lower right side of the keyboard area.

It has 4 USB ports which is great. I'm using them all simultaneously right now without a hiccup. I use an additional monitor connected through a VGA port, but it also has a Svideo port and I've hooked it up to my tv, several times. The wifi on it is great. My router is in the office, one floor up and I've never had a problem connecting or losing signal.

I have a desktop that I hardly use because this laptop does a great job. Even though I haven't, putting more memory in would make this laptop perfect. It comes with 1GB of RAM, running at 1.73Ghz (Faster than some laptops currently produced).

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I'm stingy. I might have given it five stars if it had an HDMI port, but when this computer was produced, very few laptops would have come with a HDMI port. I can't say enough about this laptop. Very tempted to make it 5 stars... Toshiba made a winner here!

on old (over 6 years) toshiba's the disk drive stops working (this happened to my friend also). I'm thinking of not reinvesting in toshiba laptops for this reason. also my version does not come with a dvd capability. this model is really inconvenient and I don't have money to buy a new one. the model I had before this one ( also a toshiba lap top but a higher grade) worked for 5 years until it was accidentally damaged. but make sure you buy one better than this model.

Over the past 21 years I've had a total of 12 different notebooks including Macs, Sony Vaios and Toshibas plus a brief and disastrous flirtation with Dell. The processing power & memory of tablets are both too feeble if you need to do serious work with real software; Macs are still excluded due to lack of compatibility with Sage Line 50 accounts software (besides other issues) so to replace my 2-year old Portege I looked again at the current crop of Toshiba notebooks.

The Intel Core processor in the Tecra offers a Goldilocks combination of VERY fast data processing even with high-demand programs, with long battery life and at 3.6kg slightly heavier than the Portege but still easily manageable. After 4 weeks it's proved fast and trouble-free, with >8-hours of battery life continuously working away from the mains.

As usual with Toshibas the Tecra is discrete and tasteful rather than flashy, with a dark aluminium casing. It has the usual integral mike and camera, good speakers with clear volume & tone as well as plentiful connecting ports for externals. I can never get the fingerprint-security facility to recognize even two of my finger scans as from the same person, so don't use it.

The Tecra boots in about 30 seconds and is then fully functioning. The screen color resolution is beautifully clear and sharp, windows7 one of the easier, more user-friendly operating systems MT has offered us.

Overall this Tecra is very good value for a mid-range machine with a lot of processing power and memory combined with lightweight, carry-in-your-hand portability and long battery life. I'd award five stars if it were 20% lighter, and 10% less expensive. But generally in a free market, with IT you get what you pay for.

I have only one experience of Toshiba's warranty service. With a previous machine I had a screen fault, and on that occasion they sent someone to collect and return it, repaired, after two days: very efficient and all FOC.

If you're going to get one of these I'd also recommend a good transport case for mobile working, and a `port replicator' (check them out) for your office.

The U56e is a sleek, aluminum-body unit with an excellent keyboard. Altogether very solid and attractive. Processor is fast enough and memory is more than enough. Battery is phenomenal.

But there is a serious flaw with the Elan touchpad: it's very erratic and unstable. It jerks around, frequently opening apps you didn't intend to, or straying around your document. While I'd done my due diligence research on this unit before purchasing, it wasn't until I'd delved into some geek forums that I discovered others making the same complaint. Several expressed astonishment that ASUS has been letting this flaw pass for years now.

After reporting this problem to ASUS support, they instructed me to reinstall the touchpad and load BIOS default. I did this, but it didn't correct the problem, which I assume is uncorrectable after reading about it in the forums. In the end, I bought an external wireless mouse.

I wish I could recommend ASUS to friends, but this mouse issue is so fundamental, I cannot do so. And it is truly jawdropping that ASUS would let this problem go on for years without intervention.

I've had this laptop about 3 mos. For the most part I love it. It's fast, clear, thin, light, and doesn't get hot. I've had it on my lap for about 1 hour and it's fine barely warm. Yes, the battery makes it heavier, but compared to other laptops the same size it's great. I love the full keyboard with number pad.

The mouse pad is okay not as smooth or large as macs, but better than most PC mouse pads. I use it with a wireless mouse they are cheap and very good these days. There's a youtube vid on this laptop and the guy comments that the dvd drive is very sensitive I haven't used mine for burning yet. The speakers are definitely small but I think they had to do this to get the profile so thin. If you use a laptop for music you should probably have separate speakers anyway.

I have had this laptop for 3 months and got it at Best Buy out of the box. Really, like the keyboard and the design of it and it has been excellent for my online courses. I have minitap and SAS software on here and it runs very smoothly. I will be adding some photoshop software to this laptop and will be using it just about every day. Would definetly buy this laptop and probably another ASUS in the future.

Honest reviews on Asus® U56E-RBL7 Laptop Computer With 15.6" LED-Backlit Screen

I bought this product about a year ago from a big box store for about $500 during a sale. Overall I have been very happy with the product.

The greatest appeal to this laptop is it's power and it's battery life.

On a full charge this thing can go about five hours. And while you may not have a the best processor or video card, I can still play games like Oblivion and Starcraft II on it at decent quality.

Like others have said, the touch pad is a bit too sensitive. I have often bumped it and unintentionally clicked things.

I have used the laptop heavily for a year and a half now and the battery is beginning to show it's wear. It's only doing about 3 hours on a full charge now.

My only other gripe is cosmetic. Some of the letters too quickly wore off. The left mouse button got worn as well.

Overall I am satisfied with my purchase. The laptop runs quickly, quietly, and coolly.

I bought a U56E-BBL5 last year and the motherboard began to fail at about 13 months (unit kept randomly shutting itself off). By 16 months, the motherboard rendered the laptop unusable. ASUS would not honor the repair even though the unit was just a few months out of warranty. In my opinion, the motherboard was not manufactured to be a durable component and spoils the good features of the laptop since it is not usable without an expensive repair (around $400). ASUS had an opportunity to practice good citizenship and take responsibility for the substandard component but chose not to. I have seen a number of identical complaints involving some ASUS motherboards.

I haven't seen any reviews for this particular model so I figured I'd write one so nobody feels like they're playing laptop roulette on this purchase. I've had this laptop for about a week and so far it has exceeded all of my expectations. This computer is perfect for solid gaming, so far I've have played Bioshock Infinite, Sleeping Dogs, TF2, and Deus Ex HR all on Medium High settings with almost all graphics features turned on and it runs like a charm. Slightly older games like Mass Effect (1) on ultra with everything run great too. Multitasking is smooth with the i5 processor and the RAM is great. I'm planning on upgrading the RAM to 8 GB when I get the chance but i'm in no rush given the performance.

Some people may view Windows 8 as a negative side, and I was a non-believer but I have actually been pleasantly surprised. Plus it doesn't force metro on you as much as I was led to believe, the desktop is as present as ever and easily accessible at all times. I haven't had any compatibility issues or crashes either which is a plus.

Some small cons that i'll list are that the lid tends to gather fingerprints quite rapidly, i've already had the computer for a week and it looks like i've been massaging the lid with bacon grease. Which is surprising since I have clean hands and don't generally massage my belongings with bacon grease. Another slight adjustment is that the windows key is on the right side of the keyboard and the function (fn) key is on the left. This is a slight annoyance since every keyboard I have ever used is the opposite, but luckily I don't use either button too often. Also, the 4+ blue LED lights on the front of the computer are bright, and I mean like you don't need a light fixture in whatever room your in bright. If you sleep in the same room a your computer (as I do) there's a high chance you'll want to throw something over it or keep under your bed. When in sleep mode the lights constantly blink, which is really, really, annoying. Lastly, as with most computers there is a little bit of bloatware (or promotional pre-installed programs). Although all are easy to get rid of.

My final thoughts are that if you're a gamer with a relatively tight budget this laptop is perfect. Or if your just a regular person looking for a computer that can handle anything you can throw at it, this is also a great choice. The laptop is light weight and has a low profile. I've already carted it to work a few times and packing it up and carrying it is simple. Track pad is decent, however I use a mouse anyways, and the keyboard is comfortable and easy to navigate. Also, one last thing is there are 3 USB ports, some might say that's not enough but it's the perfect number for me. All in all this is a perfect mid range computer that is an all rounder that delivers a great computing experience. I would definitely recommend it.

EDIT: Some things I originally forgot to mention: the card reader is really well hidden (it's pretty much under the computer towards the front) this isn't a big deal, just struck me as odd. The speakers are really loud and the quality is decent as far as laptop speakers go, big ups for that. Also, MSI has included some interesting features such as ECO (which is apparently different power profiles to conserve battery life) and things like airplane mode to disable bluetooth and such. The Hard drive is partitioned into two separate partitions, just an FYI if that is pertinent information. The heat management has so far been satisfactory and the machine hasn't been too hot to handle, although I'm sure that will change over time. A user has also commented on this review and asked about battery life, which is something I haven't tested yet but will be sure to update with when I do.

The overall design of the computer feels a little dated and the keyboard has the off placed mini right shift key that was hard to adjust to. The GPU is what I felt was underpowered for the price since there are other models available by other companies with i7 processors and much more powerful GPUs. I actually returned this one because of the dramatic price drop of their competitors products. Overall this was a solid PC but the competition just had their price beat by a long shot.

This baby has LOTS of power, and I would put it up against an i7 any day of the week. Plus it will automatically take up to half of the available memory, in this case 3 of the 6 gigs, and make it available for graphics. The new A10 APU is a great chip, and combines the processor and the discrete graphics all on one chip so there's only one chip to power, one chip to cool, and one chip to carry, plus it has Turbo Core and automatically over-clocks when it needs it. Great battery life too. Can't say enough about this laptop!

After waiting about a month and a half for this computer to ship, I was overjoyed when it arrived at my doorstep. After opening and starting to use the laptop, I realized that the right arrow key was sticking. When I pressed it down it took several seconds before it would pop up again. Nothing I did would fix this issue I figured that the warranty would cover fixing this and contacted Samsung.

The first customer service agent told me that I would have to contact Amazon and return the laptop because there was nothing she could do for me.

The second agent told me to file a service report on their website. I proceeded to try and do this and it kept telling me that my serial number was invalid. So after checking, rechecking, retyping the same number repeatedly I spoke to agent number three. He made me take a picture of the bottom of the laptop to confirm my serial number and then filed the request on my behalf because THEIR system would not take the serial number of my brand new laptop!!!

I allowed him to do so, as he told me all costs would be covered including shipping and I would be contacted by email within two business days with further instructions. I never received this email. After sending them a copy of my invoice from Amazon three times, they still stated that they never received it. Agent number 6 or 7 told me that there system still showed that my serial number was invalid and I needed to provide the proper information.

Needless to say after a week of trying to work with customer service I returned the laptop. I could not imagine having to deal with their customer service in the future EVER again. I would never buy anything from Samsung in the future.

On a brighter note, Amazon customer service was excellent!

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 3 NP355V5C-A01US 15.6-Inch Laptop

ATTENTION: If you need drivers for this laptop, go to the Samsung website, start an online chat, and just ask them for the SW Update program. They will send it to you free right through chat, and it basically downloads and installs all the drivers you need automatically. VERY convenient, especially since their driver page is down for this laptop.

SO, i was originally going to by the A8-4500M ASUS laptop that was on sale for a while at $380, but decided against it because many people were complaining about the track pad. I ended up finding this laptop for $450 on Amazon, which is a STEAL!

I have had it for a couple days now, and I'm really digging it. Everything feels good and is working well. I did upgrade to a 500GB hybrid XT hard drive which is absolutely amazing, and threw in 8GB 1600Mhz of dual channel memory with CAS 9 latency to help out any gaming I would be doing. I also installed Windows 7 on it right away. I tried Windows 8 for like 5 minutes and voted against it.

My uses for this laptop are kind of spread out, but it's not my main computer. I wanted something cheap and good for school, travel, gaming, IT type mobility, etc. I know I won't be gaming at max graphics, but I'm pretty impressed with what it CAN do so far. It runs Minecraft at 60 70 fps with everything maxed, and most newer games with around medium settings at around the 30 40+ mark at 1280x720 resolutions, which just happens to be what my flat screen tv resolution is, so i can hook up my laptop to it via HDMI and hook up my XBOX 360 Windows wireless controller and get some gaming done if i don't want to sit in front of my gaming PC. This laptop is very versatile, and I dare you to find anything else that can do this much at this price. BTW, I sold the memory and hard drive that came with this laptop to supplement the price that I paid for upgrades, so in the end I only paid $500 for a quad core, dual channel 8GB 1600Mhz CAS 9 memory, w/500GB SSD/HDD hybrid drive, w/ 7660G gaming grapics laptop. It's feeling pretty smexy.

btw, this IS a matte finish screen and not a shiny screen which I'm very happy about.

Cons:

-Fingerprint magnet on top of laptop.

-Driver support is a bit messed up on the Samsung website. I actually used the live chat through Samsung and told them their driver area was down for this laptop, so they sent a program over chat that basically automatically downloaded all the drivers I needed for the laptop which was very convenient. If you have the same issue, just ask them for the SW Update program. They were a great deal of help so I'm not going to punish them too much for that one.

-Battery is not great, even on power saving. If it's left on and screen doesn't dim, 4 hours max. Not horrible, but not impressive either.

-Air is always quite warm, even if just on normal desktop processes. Luckily you only really feel it on the side coming out and not too much through the bottom of the laptop.

-Made on the cheaper end of materials for case.

So I would like to say that I was saving up for a new Laptop to perform better than my old one. My main reason for getting a new Laptop was so I could play my games much better but without resorting to buying a gaming Laptop. I was researching for months while saving up and was really skeptical in getting something I couldn't test out before buying.

I read the review by LA LA LA and thanks to that review, and the fact that this Laptop has specs I was looking for as well as having a decent price, I bought it and I must say it's working much better than my old one. Not only does it not overheat and keeps a constant temperature it plays most of my games a lot better and smoother than my old one. Now I can't be 100% about the overheating issue since I haven't played my games in a prolonged period but its temperature is consistently perfect if I've played up to 2 hours.

The games I currently play that play really well are Borderlands and Minecraft. For some reason The Binding of Isaac is pretty much the same as my old Laptop and that it can get a little laggy in certain rooms of the game but for the most part it plays pretty decent. I have other games as well including Borderlands 2 and Terraria but I haven't tried those games yet. I would imagine they would play just as great as most of the games I have and hope that is true once I try them. Bottom line if you wish for a Laptop to play games but don't want to pay for a gaming Laptop this one has performed as I had hoped and possibly even better than I hoped once I use it more often.

One thing I would like to say is I can see why everyone hates Windows 8 and I myself feel the same way. I am getting used to it however I still hate it like most people. The only reason I bought this Laptop was to save money because by the time I had enough money for a new Laptop it would have been really hard to find a Windows 7 Laptop with the specs I wanted and most likely would have had to pay extra to get the one I wanted but request a Windows 7 version. So if you would rather save money than try to get everything you wanted this one is just right, especially if you can get used to Windows 8.
