I originally bought an HP 4545s that was on sale for ~$400. I received it, and while updating it, the motherboard ended up getting fried by a failed BIOS flash.

Well, they had no replacement 4545s' in stock, nor a replacement motherboard for it. Instead, I was offered a 8570W as a replacement\upgrade.

I could not be happier. I have had this laptop for a few days now, and it is spectacular. It is nearly as powerful as my desktop that I built for $2200 in 2010, but uses maybe 1/5 the power. Of course, the GPU isn't quite on par, but I am happy that it even has a standalone GPU, rather than just a CPU\GPU combo like most non-gaming laptops.

At first, I was skeptical, but i got the computer anyway. Now, generally I'm a mac guy, but I wanted to start playing pc games in my free time and traded to this. Games Like the new Tomb Raider, and Bioshock Infinite look unreal. I didn't even know laptops could produce graphics so powerful. Of course the 256 ssd drive is nice too! XD

Early versions of the laptop had issues with the motherboard and/or video card. Laptop would reboot on its own 5+ times per day when I first got it. HP sent out a tech and took a few visits but eventually they replaced most of the parts for free due to the onsite warranty and since then it has been rock solid.

PC performs as espected, no complains so far. The only negative point is that the B8V82UT model i had researched had bakclite keyboard and mine came with out.

I had very bad experience with the computer and with HP support. After 4 months I began receiving warnings that the hard drive had a serious malfunction. It was never dropped or mishandled. HP product support immediately sent me a new hard drive blank. they promise to send the windows 7 OS. With my technical people at my work I tried to mirror the HD to keep my software. Nothing worked. Of course a blank HD without software is worse than useless. The software on my laptop is LATEX, MATLAB. MAPLE, PHOTSHOP, etc etc. It takes days or weeks to re install it all. HP technical support blithely informed me that hard drives were supposed to fail. I asked for the manager. He was very sorry that I was having problems and advised me to go on line and purchase mirroring software and try to mirror my HD. If you want to pay top money for this kind of performance and support, purchase from HP

Though I've had a netbook, this is my first laptop.

I, too, purchased it at my local yellow and black signed brick and mortar big box store.

I couldn't be happier with it.

Pros -

Excellent LED backlit display;

Full size keyboard with 10-keypad;

Very good 802.11b/g/n wireless reception;

Great speakers;

Both RGB (VGA) and HDMI video outputs;

Toshiba's support website;

X2 finish is fairly fingerprint resistant;

Battery life of 4+ hours at full brightness.

Cons -

No bluray or bluetooth, but in this price range, it's no big deal;

I've heard the built-in web-cam isn't the best;

As others have noted, the battery will not last as long as advertised, but I've been able to get over 4 hours at full brightness.

After about a month, I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional.

Before doing so, easily found all the drivers and Toshiba software at their very good support website.

Though I still use my desktop for any gaming or heavy graphics, this laptop is great for everything mobile.

All in all, it's an excellent first laptop.

Let me start things off by saying this thing is FAST. I got it as a desktop replacement for my aging HP Media Center, which tended to give off too much heat in the summer. The A665 doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's actually faster than my HP (Core 2 Duo). And it gives off less heat. ;)

PROS:

* Fast, fast, fast, and plenty of RAM. Running multiple programs or using Firefox with a dozen tabs open at once isn't a problem; Photoshop isn't a problem; video editing is a breeze; 1080p video plays flawlessly.

* Beautiful, large, vibrant screen. Crisp and clear. Hinges are firm on the lid.

* 7200 RPM hard drive is wickedly fast.

* Speakers are excellent for a laptop, as long as you set the laptop on a flat, hard surface. There's even noticeable bass response that has to be heard to be believed.

* Keyboard is superb. Despite the laptop's overall flimsy feel, the chiclet style keys feel firm, give great feedback, and the num pad is slightly offset from the main keys, making mis-types unlikely. The keys themselves are glossy (ie, fingerprint magnets), but otherwise it's an utter delight to type on.

* Battery life rocks. 6-8 hours depending on whether or not wireless is enabled.

CONS:

* Overall build quality tends toward the flimsy. There's a lot of flex in the laptop lid, making me wonder just how easy it would be to damage the LCD. Pressing on the palm rests also reveals more flex than I'm comfortable with.

* The sucker is big and, thanks to the hefty battery, heavy. Not the best choice if you're looking for something to truck to school or work each day. (However, this isn't an issue for me because it's a desktop replacement I don't take it anywhere.)

* Under Linux, the touch-sensitive buttons at the top of the keyboard don't light up.

* Optical drive is somewhat slow when copying data from DVDs, and tends to speed up / slow down a lot when burning DVDs.

* Screen flickers randomly when running on battery power. Again, not too much of an issue for me since I use the A665 at home, but worrisome should I need to take it on the road.

Despite the flimsy feel and potential screen flicker issues, this bad boy has performed impeccably during everyday use, video editing projects, and watching 1080p video. EXCELLENT desktop replacement!

I just purchased this exact laptop at Best Buy for $300 less than listed here. So far it doesn't disappoint. Very fast. Sharp graphics on screen. I purchased this for school, and I know it will be a great computer for my use which is internet usage, online classes and document creation. I hope I am one of the lucky ones that gets advertised battery usage, as this is the feature that won me over. I like the textured surface, as it doesn't show fingerprints like some of the smooth surface laptops.

I bought this at best buy 2 weeks ago, got a good deal, 18 months to pay, no interest and had geek squad set it up and install/set up wireless router in my home. Good idea to use them, was here 2hours getting everything done and answering questions. Computer is perfect for my use, basically email, internet etc. Does not have blu ray capability, no biggie to me, never bought one to view yet. So far, this is just what I expected and I am very happy with it. I can always add software if needed.

I can't get into specifics on this computer, because I am at Best Buy right now (01/10/11) and this model (Toshiba Model:A665-S6086) is going for $599.99 and all the specs are the same as this model. When I saw the price and compared it to the price here at Amazon I almost fell over. No, I do not work for Best Buy, I'm an independent accountant and work for myself so you don't have to worry about any bias in this review. Shop around. I'm going to be walking out of here in less than 10 minutes with this baby and I'll be getting it for $600 plus tax. Something for all of you to consider and I thought I would do my good deed for the day and "pay it forward." By the way, I shop Amazon all the time, mostly MP3 downloads, but I do love this site. The Toshiba Satellite C55D-A5240NR is an inexpensive laptop with an AMD processor and 4GB of memory, running Windows 8 64-bit as an operating system. Frankly, the downfall in this configuration is the 4GB of memory, but this can be remedied, as can the lack of Bluetooth.

For someone who isn't into games requiring fast, responsive graphics, this basic laptop would be a good choice. Good build quality, nice 15.6" display (1366x768 (HD), 16:9 aspect ratio, Supports 720p content), built-in media card reader, lightweight body (only 5.2 pounds) and the perks of HDMI, webcam with built-in microphone, and (1) USB 3.0 (you also have 2 USB 2.0) made me smile. The inclusion of the DVD drive (often omitted on lightweight laptops these days) was also a nice perk.

Toshiba says it has 'enhanced sound', but I didn't notice this to be the case. I added speakers via the line-in port (used for headphones), and later decided to add a Kinivo BTD-300 Bluetooth 3.0 USB adapter For Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Windows XP / Vista, Mac OS 10.3.9 or Later, which is a cheap addition that gives this laptop the Bluetooth capabilities it lacks out of the box.

I then added Bluetooth speakers for additional 'enhanced sound' that made me happy. My speaker choices: (NEW) AYL BSPK202 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Set with Built in Speakerphone + 8 hour Rechargeable Battery and Enhanced Bass Resonator + 3 Year Warranty or (NEW) AYL Mini Touch BoomBox Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker with Built in Speakerphone + 8 hour Rechargeable Battery + 3 Year Warranty Black. You can also use Bluetooth headphones with the adapter installed. I've used my Bose AE2w Bluetooth Headphones Black via this method, without a problem.

This laptop isn't high-end. It doesn't have a back-lit keyboard, but it is full-sized and includes 10-key. It's screen resolution is average, and the battery life on a 6-cell is about 4 hours depending upon the type of usage. You can watch Netflix, Skype, Facebook, play online games, email and surf the Web. You can also edit photos and upload videos to YouTube. It's a utilitarian laptop, that anyone can afford.

The Toshiba won't be for gamers or those who intend to edit video. The graphics and the memory are lacking, and AMD processors (while the can work fine for this purpose...) take a back seat to Intel for this purpose in my opinion.

If you are looking for a solid choice for a basic laptop that's thin, lightweight, and will allow you to study, work and play for about three hundred bucks, this is a good choice!

I would suggest adding more memory though, as the basic configuration of 4GB is barely enough to run the operating system. This is unfortunately pretty much the standard with laptops in this price range, and how the manufacturers can offer them so cheaply. This laptop can be expanded to 16GB of memory, which is ideal for anyone wanting to get the most performance, but certainly not necessary. At 8GB (doubling the current configuration), you should see a noticeable performance boost.

To upgrade, I suggest either taking it to a local shop (you'll probably pay more than doing it yourself) or opening up the back to reveal the memory slots. There are (2), each with 2GB sticks of DDR3 1600MHz memory. You will need to purchase a kit with 2 sticks of 4GB (total 8GB) for about sixty to eighty bucks to do the upgrade. I suggest you look at what memory is installed first (brand, part number, speed) to verify what's installed prior to the upgrade. Sometimes this can vary, depending upon where your laptop was built.

I upgraded using this kit: Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2CP51264BF160B. However you can (see comments) add one compatible (any brand) stick of 4GB to the existing 4GB stick for a total of 8GB. NOTE: I like to add two of the same brand and size for best performance, but some argue this is not necessary. I got the 8GB kit for less than I could have gotten 4GB of Samsung memory, so I decided to do it this way and put the Samsung part into another laptop.

Something that Toshiba did which surprised me. Despite having only a 1066Mhz data transfer rate on the installed motherboard per Toshiba's specs, they've installed memory with a 1600Mhz speed. This PC will never be able to attain that speed due to the limitations of the installed hardware, even with the faster memory, but adding compatible 1600Mhz speed memory is the way to go as it will make for a smooth running system and there's no real price issue.

If you prefer to add an additional 4GB of memory (for a total of 8GB with the existing stick (which for most appears to be a Samsung part) you may want to use: Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Module CT51264BF160B which costs much less than the existing Samsung module, yet works the same.

Upgrading the memory is not tough, so don't be afraid to do it yourself. Just take your time (look at a few tutorials on YouTube), make sure you're grounded and not on carpet when you open up the case to prevent harmful static which can ruin parts.

So if you want a basic laptop with potential for speediness with an upgrade, snap this one up.

UPDATE: 9/17/13 TIP Recovery Drive to USB

To save yourself some potential grief with ANY Windows 8 PC, think about making a recovery drive from a 32GB USB flash drive (you could do it with less, but to include the recovery partition from the hard drive get the 32GB stick). It's easy! In Windows 8 use the Search box and type in 'recovery drive'. You will see 'Create a Recovery Drive'. Follow the directions and then you'll have an essential back-up of the operating system and drivers, if needed for a reboot when Windows has failed for some unknown reason. Store it somewhere safe and continue to do system back-ups (not the same thing...) about once a week.

I only wanted a laptop to use gmail, facebook, spotify, netflix, office, skype... You can use all this stuff with this Toshiba without problems. Windows 8 was hard at first, but now I get used to it. We talked with a computer guy and this had everything we were looking for. We would've preferred windows 7 since everyone complains about windows 8 but really after messing around a bit with it, its not that bad if your a techy person. If your not comfortable with tablets and smart phones then i would stay a way a look for a windows 7 computer. This is a really nice computer for the basic, every day tasks that someone would want to do. Browsing the web, checking email, typing up documents, chatting on Skype. Everyday task like these are what this computer is for. Don't buy this computer and expect high speed video editing and rendering, or high-end gaming because this won't do you any good. It does have an AMD Radeon 7310 graphics card, so it can do very, very light gaming, but I would not just purchase this computer just for that purpose. The CPU is a dual core running at 1.4 ghz, so it's not the fastest processor for gaming. I personally think the speakers sound a bit low also.

So what are the pros of this laptop? It's very inexpensive compared to other laptops made for the same purpose. It's lightweight, and has an impressive battery life for a laptop. The keyboard is awesome, sleek, and very comfortable to type on. A very spacey 500GB hard drive makes for a lot of storage. Although, there are many people who despise Windows 8, I actually like it. The apps are a nice touch, and there's still the traditional desktop view everyone is familiar with. Yes, it takes awhile to get used to, but once you do, it's a cool operating system. Not to mention, very quick boot up and shut down times. It comes with fast, UBS 3.0, an HDMI out port to connect to your HD television or monitor, and a nice HD display. At $330.00, this computer is a great deal.

This fine piece of machinery, while not the best laptop in the world, has proven to be extremely durable. Its had its share of falls, including some pretty bad ones. But Last night, I fell asleep on Skype on a top bunk in my barracks room. I woke up in the middle of the night, because I had kicked it in my sleep. It hit a wall, and crashed down on the floor. I woke up immediately afraid to find a floor full of broken pieces and a cracked screen. Nope, nothing but a perfectly working laptop. Like I said, its not the fastest laptop, and its not the best for games, but if you want a durable dependable laptop that works, this one is for you.

The computer has met our needs, for daily home activities such as e-mail, MS office tasks, I have also used it to process pictures and that has worked well. USB3 connection is really nice. So far the only issue is that the SD card sticks out when it is in the reader and could get damaged if the computer is set down without using much care. I would not hesitate to order another Toshiba as I have owned four computers from another major computer company that have all died within 2 and 3 years of purchase. Perfect for the price I paid, but to say it's perfect in general would unfortunately be a lie.

I'll start with the positives. The laptop is still running with virtually no damage aside from HDD issue that I'll get to later. I bought it last year in August for school, so it's impressive to see no real issue from then to now. The computer is still fast, has a brilliantly fast start up time, has not blue screened once, and only overheated one time when I accidentally was laying on my side with the computer tilted and blocked the vents. (stupid mistake but it turned back on quickly enough)

The battery is a little on the weak side, only lasting an hour on high, and ~3-4 hours on eco mode. This is after a year, however, so I'm perfectly fine with these stats as I normally have access to an outlet and the charger is pretty small if you coil the cords around the box.

The screen is still perfect with virtually no pixel issues. There's not even a random red dot on the screen which after all my gaming I'm glad to see.

A few screws have fallen out, and I can tell the case is a little loose because of it, but I don't run while I use it so I really have no issue. It hasn't fallen apart and it doesn't feel like it's ever going to.

Touchpad is fine for a casual user, and it gets the job done for me, but any gaming requires a mouse.

The RAM is a GREAT features of this, truly a plus in my eyes. 6gb of RAM is plenty for a much more expensive computer, yet I got this one on sale for 550, so to say I'm content is an understatement. The CPU could be better but this is on a gaming point of view. It runs smoothly, quietly, and in a cool fashion on virtually anything else. I can rest the thing on my lap without it getting hot (though this wasn't the case with the old HDD)

That leads me to that issue. The HDD failed out after 9 months of use. I noticed issues with the laptop getting very warm, and basic games from the 90's being a little sluggish. I took it to my uncle who examined it and said the HDD was probably going to fail the next day. He tried to transfer my data out of it but most of it was lost due to failure (But I maintained my music thankfully)

A week later the laptop has a nice SSD. I would have liked to have used the HDD as an external source for all my movies and music, but you never know when an HDD will fail. Could last 10 years, or 10 minutes.

I enjoyed the 750 gb of room it had, but my SSD is truly better. With it, I almost never have to use the fan to cool down the system in the winter, and turning my fan on and pointing it where I'm sitting is enough in the Summer unless I'm doing something extensive like a game or Microsoft Visual.

That leads me to the GPU which is below average for games as it's integrated and intel. But it runs everything perfectly fine outside of games. It can even run Skyrim on low (most likely due to the rest of the computer being much better in comparison and having 6 gigs of RAM to leech off of) so I don't have to go without games entirely. It even runs Minecraft on Normal Draw Distance, which isn't exactly an easy feat. For the budget gamer, this definitely is a valid choice.

To say I'm satisfied with the $500 computer is an understatement. It has lasted a year without any parts except the HDD failing. Even so, Hard drives can be sketchy even in high end laptops and I doubt many will have similar scenarios. The SSD I got was only 180 so all in all I spent 700 on a laptop that does everything I want it to, starts up fast, can do everything I need in school, and can even game a little. I really love the Satellite line of laptops, and if you have to buy Toshiba, I'd recommend this laptop.

It isn't perfect, but compared to other $500 laptops it's top tier.

I does everything as promised and is beautiful to look at as well as use. It is well designed. Windows 8 is taking some getting used to but I think in the end I will like it just fine. Dell send my laptop with a wrong brick and the next day i receive an email tell me the error i didn't figure it out. Send me the new power brick with no extra cost. I'm very satisfied with the customer sevice i have in dell , a much better than msi or other brands like asus.

I know there are nice laptops out there. Or similar with similiar price range or 200usd cheaper. But the customer service is alot of diference. I have owned 2 alienware sistems , my old laptop m17x r2 and this new beauty , and the only time i need customer service and they contact me first via email. i'm very pleaced with dell's service. The performance is about what you would expect for such a underpowered AMD chipset Adequate. But, this isn't why I purchased the laptop. I purchased it for the promised 9.5 hours. Actually, I purchased 2 of these 3105m's. We are lucky to get 2.5 to 3.0 hours out of the laptops IF the screens are turned down so low that they are barely visible. There is no way to get anything close to 9 hours of even moderate to light use out of this laptop. I would not have purchased this laptop if I had known the actual battery life.

My 2-week old desktop wouldn't come out of sleep mode one day so I had to use the Hp 3105m while my custom desktop was sent back to the vendor. It took 4 weeks before I got it back so in the meantime I hooked up my monitor and wireless keyboard & mouse to the HP 3105m and I was off to the races. It wasn't as fast as my 4x desktop w/8GB memory & 128GB SSD2 but, hey, it was more than I anticipated and is NOT a 3.52 pound weakling.

Now I'm waiting on the arrival of my new HP 3115m w/2x E-450 & Radeon 6320 GPU, 4GB memory & Win7 Pro 64bit. It s/b here in a day or 2 (3/5 or 3/6/2012) and I'm expecting even more out of it now. I think I might even put an SSD2 in it.

The last AMD notebook I had was a 33MHz 386. I had an Intel 25MHZ 386 at the same time and I've used Intel most of my life but I'm a die-hard AMD fan now. APUs rule.

There is one other review on here and it sound like they got a dud. I got my computer after weeks of research for a laptop that was in my price range that could handle Diablo 3. And I am more than pleased. Not only is it cute (yes I said cute) but I take it to and from school and to and from work and never had an issue. The graphics card is more than up to the challenge of playing Diablo 3 beta (which was just opened) and would have no problem running WoW. I am amazed at the deal I got and would recommend this laptop to anyone. There is a reason they offer a warrenty because computers are like any thing else. Sometimes there is a dud and it sounds like that is what the other reviewer had.

Back to the laptop... it has dedicated memory for the graphics card that allows for play with no glitchs which is more than I can say about my desktop.

Overall a fantastic buy for the money and well worth it to the other college students out there who want to do more than just type on their laptop.

All excited when this came. Ordered it through Galactica (an Amazon store). First, the packaging made me nervous as it was in its factory box, no outer box to protect it. The computer is very good looking and has a nice keyboard. All happy until I turned it on, and got the blue screen of problems. Reboot and it starts to work. Then went to uninstall the first item of bloatware crash. Again reboot. Again crash. Got to the uninstall screen went to the next item.. Crash. Now I have to go through a 3 week process to get a credit. ugh. Really disappointed with Acer and really disappointed in myself for ordering it through this sub-store on Amazon.

I love this laptop. Good sound, good picture, good photo program. I had another Acer and was quite happy with it. But I dropped it. The only bad thing is the Windows program and it's usual bazillion updates that will eventually slow your computer down to a snails pace.

This laptop won't even start up half the time and when it does its slow and freezes up or crashes. I can't upgrade it to get it to work better. It is a giant paper weight!!!

This is a real sleeper considering the AMD Radeon HD 7670M Graphics Card is about 65% MORE POWERFUL than the Intel Core i7-2670QM HD Video card and slightly faster than the GeForce GT 630M which is what counts in most games. CPU is not nearly as powerful as Core i7 BUT you don't need it that strong when the Video is so good and this is ONLY a 1360x768 Display.

Higher resolutions may slow down and Intel Core i7-2670QM is WAY OVERPOWERED for most users unless your building 3D CAD Submarines At Electric Boat!

I'm very happy with this purchase, this is a perfect fit for those who want to play games and some multi-tasking. The graphics are great, with medium to high settings. I also use it for some Photoshop and other picture editing programs, and it runs them very smoothly. The keyboard is great as well, also has a number pad beside it, that's a plus for me. Battery life is good, even though I have plugged in all the time. Overall, a great laptop for those who are looking for a little bit of gaming and multi-tasking.

You can get the specs on this computer by going to and typing in the model number VPCF112FX.I recommend this Sony VAIO Notebook only because it is really good value given the price/performance mix.

The hardware chassis is well constructed, with a full sized keyboard featuring an ambient light sensor to provide back-lit keys and auto adjusts display brightness for optimal viewing.

The display is vibrant.

The system boots up in seconds--way less than 60 seconds--I clocked about 17 seconds. And you can start typing and loading programs as soon as the desktop appears!

VPCF112FX comes installed with a 7200 RPM 500 GB Seagate Momentus HDD. It is a superb hard disk drive and you will not hear any noise coming from it.

The system fan is nice and quiet. Some notebooks have loud fans, this one is very quiet.

The nVidia graphics are very awesome. Graphics display has no lag. I would like to have seen 1 GB of dedicated video memory but the standard 512 MB is plenty for most programs.

The HD audio sound and speakers are crisp.

There are a few issues you need to know before deciding whether it's right for you.

1) Sony VAIO Technical Support lacks the know-how to resolve minor software issues: a) the Sony VAIO Care and VAIO Update utility software has numerous program bugs and every time I try to convey the issues to Sony Technical Support they are totally inept at resolving the issues much less reporting the problems for future product fixes; b) the Alps Touchpad Control Panel for VAIO which runs in the taskbar has a bug which causes it to "hang" on system shutdown, Windows 7 resolves the "hang" by performing a forced shutdown of the filename Apoint.exe. It is a small but annoying issue that I have reported in emails and phone support but I don't think Sony's tech support really cares about this issue and customers will have to hope that a new version will resolve this minor bug.

2) There are two points in the product specs that need clarification: a) the system comes installed with 4 gigabytes of DDR3 memory running at a maximum speed of 667 MHz. The system can be upgraded to 8 gigabytes of DDR3 memory running at a maximum of 1333 MHz. You will not get RAM speed 1333 MHz from with your factory installation unless you buy from and order an upgrade;

* Type/Speed : DDR3/1333MHz

* Maximum : 8GB

b) the system comes with three (3) USB 2.0 ports, one of these ports is a combo port for eSATA/USB 2.0.

If you have an external USB HDD with a eSATA port, you are going to love this combo port! Data moves lightening fast.

3) The Blu-ray combo optical drive shipped in the factory installation is way too slow given the CPU and memory in this system. I purchased this system for DVD video editing and burning. But the specs do not indicate that the DVD burner can only burn at 4x max speed. The technical specs are confusing and lead you to believe that 4x pertains to the Blu-ray speed.

Sony could easily have installed a 16x DVD burner/40x CD burner at a marginal price increase I think given the drive is a Sony Optiarc BD drive which they manufacture at a nominal cost I'm sure--so if you want a faster DVD/CD burner you will need to order an upgrade at to get a faster combo optical drive.

DO NOT GET ME WRONG, I AM VERY PICKY, THIS IS A GREAT NEW MODEL FROM SONY. SONY JUST NEEDS BETTER TECH SUPPORT PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO CUSTOMER FEEDBACK AND FIX SOME VERY MINOR VAIO UTILITY PROGRAM BUGS.

My friend needed a new computer so I bought him a laptop. I was looking for a laptop that was simple to use. I was glad that when he got it, it was easy for him to use. I do not know a whole lot about this laptop but I do know my friend was happy and he loves using it. It does video great and he uses it for simple streaming and surfing the Internet. Can't complain too much about that! I thought the Windows8 system would be complicated, but he said it was pretty easy to use. Great purchase! I recommend since the price is right for what it does

The laptop does a good job "so far" since we only purchased it on September 21st 2013. The only thing is the mouse is (realy) sensitive hard to get it where you want it without bringing up all that you don't want . Color is good . Windows 8 isn't that bad at all . I would recommend it to someone that wanted a everyday computer but not to someone that wanted to play games on . Good price.

I was looking for the perfect laptop to replace my old Toshiba. This laptop works great, no complaints so far. The price for this laptop is actually a steal with how fast the processor is. My mom bought one as well (her first laptop). I will update my review later if any problems arise and/or if my mom has anything to add.

Pros: Boots super fast (like SUPER FAST), lightweight (I carry it to class with me), Windows 8 is actually very easy to use once you get the hang of it (even the most computer illiterate person could figure it out), I LOVE the number pad as well

Sound Quality: It's loud enough for a laptop. I actually find the sound pretty efficient, but don't expect any "super bass" or anything.

But once again, this would be the perfect laptop for you, especially if you don't want to go buy an expensive MacBook.

The first thing that you'll notice is that it's extremely lightweight and is very uncomplicated. This is something that my 87 year old mother-in-law would be able to use right out of the box. Since she's never used a computer before, that says a lot. Many of the everyday apps that you use on a daily basis, are preloaded into the device. It comes with things like YouTube, Gmail and other Google products, and there are literally thousands of free apps available. It starts up very quickly and according to Google, updates are installed automatically. I've found all applications to run smoothly and quickly.

The computer feels solid. There's no latch to keep the screen down when it's close, but if you're careful that's probably not a big deal. Don't lift directly in the middle of the lid though, that's where the camera is. It does attract dust and fingerprints like a magnet, but whether you'll care or not is personal preference. According to the sticker on the front, it actively tries to run your battery in charge cycles to prolong life, which assuming they do a good job of it is an awesome feature. Just a note, you'll have to go into power options and click Dell Extended Battery Life options.

The first thing you should do after you've set up the computer, is restart and press F12 before and as the Dell logo is coming up. Then choose diagnostics and test the system thoroughly. It'll take maybe 30-40 minutes, but it's well worth it. Then go into the My Dell application and stress test it again. Then do it again once a week or so. Your goal is to either fry the thing, so you're replaced rightfully so during warranty, or see that the system is rock solid and you're probably fine. You won't void any warranties, the Dell software specifically says it won't damage your hardware; if something gives out it's defective. DO NOT WAIT until you're close to or out of warranty to perform tests!

The DVD drive is about as cheaply constructed as they come. It looks very fragile and I wouldn't bet on it for a whole lot of use, however given a lot of video and games are digital now, it may not be a big deal. According to the Backup Media creation software, it burns at 2x so it's quite slow, but then again it's a cheap laptop.

Backup Media The backup media is not included; the software that creates it is awful. It ate two of my DVDs, failing both times, and took some time to hunt a solution online. Apparently they shipped it glitched so often times it will create the first disk, taking 20-30 minutes to do so, then fail on the second. You can alternatively backup to a USB drive. It appears as if they don't limit you to burning only one copy of backup media, which is one reason I got fed up and left HP. Tip: update the Dell backup software before you try to make backup DVDs or it'll just ruin DVD after DVD and fail every time.

Keyboard The keyboard is slightly eschew. To accommodate the number pad, things are just slightly off, so if you're a touch typist you'll probably be slightly off center when you first try it. The touchpad was responsive and the buttons had a satisfying click.

Windows 8 It's abysmal and makes everything harder than it needs to be. Dell did thankfully include a couple of videos to at least let you see how to turn the machine off. Hint: it's needlessly stupid and annoying. Move mouse to upper right of screen, then the "charms" appear and you can find it. Alternatively, you can do Ctrl+Alt+Delete and find the power button in the lower right corner. I'm strongly considering dual booting to Unbutu Linux.

Heat/Fans The laptop fan is very quiet. You can feel a lot of heat radiating off the keypad when the machine is doing a stress test, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. A good laptop case should dissipate heat easily. My only real concern in this arena is that it doesn't look very easy to blow dust out of the machine as it accumulates. They should have designed it with that in mind.

USB Ports The USB ports and the power supply are all on the sides of the machine. Three are on the left side along with the cord and one on the right. I'd rather have had one in the back, because it's a little too crowded if a USB plug is fat. I'm finding it difficult to nail down, with several websites having conflicting information, but from the icons next to the ports it looks like 1 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 on the left and 1 USB 2.0 on the right side.

Memory Card Reader There's a multi-card reader located annoyingly in the front which you can easily miss if you don't know to look for it. Still, better to have it than not, but I wish they'd included some sort of cover for it for when it's not in use.

The picture in the webcam is not crystal clear by definitely OK; you will want to have some light in the room you're using at or it'll look really bad though. There is also an integrated microphone, which is a little scary really since some viruses can turn both on. I'm probably paranoid, but I'm going to put a small bandage over the camera when I'm not using it. As long as you're close, the sound quality on the microphone is just fine for video conferencing.

All in all, very decent machine for the money. I'll have to try it out with some games, but so far it's looking very promising I'll be using it for many years.

---Update 8-12-13---

I tried it with Saint's Row 2 and the game is virtually unplayable, but that's just because it's a horribly poorly coded game. The laptop can handle the graphics just fine, slightly decreased, but the game has a glitch that makes it run way to fast. I think what's wrong is the TurboBoost makes the CPU speed variable so it's messing with the modification tool which normally fixes that speed issue. If you want to play that game, you're out of luck.

For other games, it's running quite well. For example, I've played Shank on it the other day and while it put out a lot of heat, the game played perfectly. I've read online it's graphics are roughly equivalent to a Nvidia 220 card. As long as the game doesn't require much more than 2 Ghz processor, as a rule of thumb you're probably OK with games that weren't high end graphics maybe three years ago or lighter new ones, but of course check system requirements. It's not a gaming rig, but you should be able to play a number of older games.

Upgrading to a core i5 processor is essentially a speed and a graphics card boost in one, making this laptop an even better deal. Time will tell if the speed is balanced out by too much heat that kills the machine or some sort of hidden shortcut they took on build quality, but nobody can really say that for sure until the machine has been out a couple years. If you're worried about it, you can buy a warranty from Dell. Usually, the sooner you buy it the cheaper it is.

I like the hardware. It's got a nice size and weight. Doesn't feel like a premium computer, but doesn't feel exceedingly cheap. Works well, once you figure out what you're doing. It's great for such an inexpensive computer!

The cover makes for a nice grip, but collects fingerprints like you wouldn't believe, and then you can't wipe them off. That's the biggest flaw in the hardware.

I really hate to ding it for what is now the standard (which is why I only took 1 star)...

But Windows 8 has been a less-than-impressive experience. We had to google how to shut it down -I'm not kidding. You move the mouse over the lower-right, some faint buttons appear on the right edge, so you hold the edge and move the cursor up and they become visible. Then you click the gear, "power settings," and shut down. Seriously?

The Desktop vs Metro thing, including separate, non-inter-compatible programs is mind boggling. Switching back and forth between the two (IE can run in either mode, but the session is not shared, Word will only run in Desktop) is a pain. The lack of a task bar or even the ability to take IE out of full screen makes using two things at once a huge chore. Say you're updating a cover letter in word to line it up with a job posting (true story) was incredibly frustrating.

We haven't resorted to installing Windows 7, but it's going to happen sooner or later.
