I have this laptop for 2 weeks already and I am really glad because this helps me in my work and study. This laptop look simple but the way it functions is really fast. One of my students dropped this laptop from my desk but lo and behold nothing happened. I had it checked just to make sure but everything is perfect! Amazing! So durability wise its so good. Its fast with the internet. Picks up wi-fi so fast. The webcam is ok too. The picture resolution when I play dvd or from online is very clear. The design is just right. The touch pad is amazingly smooth. Its not sensitive but just right. Vista is good in this laptop. Before I forget, this laptop doesn't get hot fast on my lap. Excellent! It runs quiet too. All in all I don't have any problem with this.

Toshiba laptops have a big time power plug issue (internal power jack pulls away from housing preventing plug insertion). Mine failed within 4 months of use. It is a obvious design problem which Toshiba continues to ignore. Type in Toshiba Laptop Problems in Yahoo search engine. Its a problem that will NOT go away. Too bad...besides this issue it's not a bad machine. Customer support is way bad!!!

This is actually my first Toshiba, the first Laptop I have ever purchased and actually the first computer I have ever purchased. I am an IT manager and we can make anything work and usually take hand me downs. My Dell was getting long in the tooth so I was looking to replace it. I didn't want to spend a boat load of money so I did some research and found this laptop. Toshiba Laptops have a very good track record so I decided on this one. Let me tell you this is a nice laptop. Setup was quick and painless and it is nice performing machine.

I bought this product as a replacement for my Sony VAIO that I been using for 7 years. I've been using it for three weeks now and I find it cheaply made. For one, one of the key is not working. Second, it gets sratch so easily. I've taken it overseas this past few week and had to find alternate computer to use because "A" keyboard letter sticks. I guess you get what you paid for.

I bought this new laptop to replace my previous Dell, and it just arrived yesterday. So far, so good. I was able to set it up within minutes. Using the Windows File Transfer was awesome, too, even though it took a long time to get my settings and files over. There is not a whole lot of crap on this laptop as someone claimed, either. I was expecting a lot of junk on here when there isn't. My connection to WiFi is 5 bars which never, ever happened on the previous Dell. The speed is PRIMO! I'm extremely happy with this laptop. It has not lagged one time since I've been using it (and I have 3 browsers open at all times with 2 always logged in). My youngest daughter is happy, because she is now the owner of my other Dell since her Acer died on her. It's an Inspiron 1545 model that I bought in 2009 or 2010 and still going strong. I think Dell is the bomb :-) May this one last 10x longer :-)

Dell Inspiron i15R-2105PNK 15-Inch Laptop (Pink) UPDATE, Sep 30, 2012 5:42:08 AM PDT: Okay, let me update this after a few negative new discoveries. First off, no matter what I set this on, the screen saver does NOT come on. No matter what I set this on, it does not go to sleep while the lid is open like it is supposed to. I have changed the settings twice now, and it just doesn't matter :-( I'm not happy about this. Secondly, it runs HOT, HOT, HOT, HOT. I have a fan pointing towards that side, too, and it still is very hot to the touch. It's like the fan is NOT working to cool this off. My other Dell did NOT run hot at all. Thirdly, I see the price jacked up since I purchased this 9 days ago. I am so glad I bought it when I did, because I would NEVER pay $700 for it ($600 was bad enough)! I'm not happy with the it's performance right now at all, but I will keep trying the settings and see what happens. My main worry is how hot this runs :-(

Dell Inspiron i15R-2105PNK 15-Inch Laptop (Pink) UPDATE, Oct 12, 2012 7:48 PM CST: One more update, and I hope that's the end of this story. I woke this morning to find my laptop wouldn't function. Every file I had of .exe was defunct. It wouldn't even let me run a virus scan. It wouldn't even let me restore. It wouldn't even let the Dell tech connect to my network so he could get inside and see what was wrong. So, we had to end up doing a factory restore much to my dismay, because, of course, that would mean having to re-install all my files, programs, etc. I'm not finished as yet, but I must say this laptop must have been sick upon arrival. The graphics were absolutely horrible on here in comparison to my other Dell, the sound quality was horrible, and it ran extremely hot. Since the factory restore, the graphics are 1000 times better than before, the sound is 1000 times better than before, and it is NOT running hot...not even warm. This is a mystery, no doubt. I just hope that whatever went wrong this morning will never happen again. The Dell tech suggested I had dl'd a virus, but I beg to differ. In almost 21 years of being on line, I never have. I am one that keeps virus protection, updates it, and does not click on links when I have even an ounce of doubt about it. He could not explain how I could get a virus when my system was alseep. So, that's a mystery as well. Anyway, right this minute, I'm so happy with my laptop, but my fingers are crossed that doesn't change :-)

I've had this laptop since Friday, and am pleased with nearly everything. The processor is fast and responsive. 8GB of RAM is definitely noticeable. I haven't noticed any lag or stuttering during any of my tasks. The hardware is well built and feels great, much lighter than it looks. The speakers are the only issue I've seen. They are loud, but are very tinny. Sound doesn't seem natural when watching a movie.

The biggest issue is the amount of bloat Dell puts in their software. I'm not a fan of game or software demos, and there are a lot on this laptop. There is even a dedicated button to launch the game service in the top right corner. With the terabyte hard drive, these programs likely won't be noticed, but still an inconvenience to mention.

For this price, the value is obvious. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a new laptop.

If I had not been that I was in need of a replacement laptop I would not have made this purchase. I should have listen to my gut feeling and canceled this order. The screen is nice but that is all the good that I can say about the machine. Considering that it has 8 GB DDR it really isn't that fast. I was going to upgrade to and Hybrid drive like with my old machine that would give me the small SSD and a 7200 rmp drive but after checking with dell this machine as an old connection for the hard drive so of course the only place I could find a hard drive was with Dell and it wasn't any better that what is it. The track pad is a pain because if you touch it while typing you are all over the place. This machines weight is almost 10 lbs not something I can have sitting on my lap as what a laptop is made to do. Yes they use to be even heavier but now anything over 5lb seems a little outdated. Yes. I should have done even more research and trusted my gut. The worst part was that within 30 days the price dropped over 150 dollars and Amazon does not have what a lot of the sites have that if it's lower within 30 days they will refund you. That's not the computers flaw but all the other are. Never a Dell again. We had XPS and they were junk and Dell did not stand behind the problems. Lesson learned even if you need a new computer really bad and you are still unsure. Stay unsure and get what will work for you and not be sorry. Lucky Lenovo's direct site had a fantastic sale over the Black Friday weekend sale and got a better laptop and someone else is going to take this one.

Picked this particular Dell laptop over a similarly-priced Sony because this one had a slightly better processor, more RAM, and a larger HDD. The Dell was about $50 more, but in my mind that's a no-brainer. Another bonus is that this model came with Windows 7, and not Windows 8. Like any Microsoft Operating System release, I'm not even considering the newest one until there is a Service Pack 1 update available. This model sports an Intel Core i5 processor. I've found that the main difference between i5 and i7 is Hyperthreading support. If you don't plan on running applications that will take advantage of Hyperthreading, there's not much sense in spending the extra cash for the i7 processor.

Display is nice and large and the laptop didn't have too much preloaded software. Dell includes a nice utility to register the laptop, and even better, automatically uninstalls the registration utility when it's finished. It was a simple matter to uninstall the remaining items I didn't want before adding my own anti-virus and Office software.

The main complaints I have are the lack of a USB 3.0 interface, no backlit keyboard, and a simply huge touchpad. I'm not kidding about the touchpad it's so large that I keep hitting it with the palm of my right hand. I suppose I will get used to it, but I still can't figure out why anyne would need a touchpad that large.

There have been no signs of heat issues as reported by a couple of other users. Perhaps defective processor fans? Anyway, I'm happy with the purchase so far and will update the review if any negative points develop.

I purchased this laptop about a month ago for basic use (internet, videos, word processing, etc) and it has so far been wonderful.

Pros:

Fans are very quiet and this machine almost never feels warm even after watching a movie. Very surprised after reading other reviews that say it can sometimes run hot.

Fantastic keyboard.

Very nice sound quality. Sound is better in my headphones than my iMac.

Nice graphics.

Perfect size.

Cons:

Battery life is only ~4 hours.

A little heavier than other new laptops, though this isn't a big issue.

*I have not tried gaming on this computer.

Overall, I'd say this computer is a great purchase for any student, especially for the price.

Lenovo Ideapad U-550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Review

Not quite as solid as a Thinkpad, but not the price of one, either, nor the weight. And much sexier. This is a larger 15.6 inch version of the U350, the earlier version of which critics seemed to love for form factor, but complained about sub-par processing performance. The new lineup seems to fix that problem, and now it is the complete package. The SU7300 Core 2 Duo is lightning fast for the tasks I am doing to this point. Granted, I haven't pushed it to generate 3D CAD drawings, but for Office, Web browsing, working with iTunes and the things most of us do on a daily basis, I certainly am impressed. Huge HD, plenty of RAM. Beautiful keyboard as always from Lenovo. It does lack Firewire, but has every other connection you could want. 3 USBs are nice, as is the card reader and HDMI output. I thought it had bluetooth, but I can't seem to locate it this appears to be a difference between this beautiful black version (bought right here on Amazon) and the brown versions sold by Lenovo directly. The other difference appears to be I seem to have an integrated graphics card, while the brown Lenovo version has a 512MB card. Not that I can tell a difference so far. This is a great value.

Here's the summary of my experience with the Lenovo U-550

Pros

* Combination of 15.6 inch screen and relatively light weight

* Relatively long battery life

* Reasonably solid construction

* More than sufficient for moderate MS Office use and heavy internet/ entertainment use

Cons

* Lenovo customer support is a bureaucratic nightmare

* Numeric keypad occupies right-most section of the keyboard, shifting the remainder of the keyboard to the left

* Glossy screen and body translates into a grimy appearance due to finger prints

* Screen will slam shut against the keyboard unless you slow it as it closes

My previous Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop was near death, so it was time to replace it after ~ 4 years of heavy use. I was happy with the Dell, but it was a heavy beast that plowed through battery power. In looking for the replacement, I wanted an impossible combination of desktop replacement like the E1505, but minus the weight, bulk, and limited battery performance of the E1505. Upon shopping, I was unimpressed with MacBook Pro given the price. Other Wintel thin and light machines appeared to be cheaply built or with low-quality components/ limited screen size. The Lenovo Ideapad U-550 stood out to me as a higher quality build with a large screen. I knew that it came with a glossy screen, but I couldn't find any other comparable machine without this annoyance. Also the numeric keypad placed on the rightmost section of the keyboard displaces the other keys to the left, which seems unnecessary to me (how many of us really key in data with a numeric keypad?).

All considered, I am happy with the purchase. The U-550 is easy to carry around, is good for the intended use (i.e. moderate MS Office use, heavy use for internet, movies, music), and has a reasonable battery life (~4+ hrs under perpetual use, less with a movie/ DVD thrown in).

The major shortcoming is Lenovo customer support. I wanted an additional battery for the U-550 to really cover a 6 hour flight under moderate use with DVDs. Attempting to get even this simple of a request accommodated through Lenovo customer support was a true nightmare. It took two days of transfers and frustration. Dell support was much better (but I was not impressed with their thin and light PCs).

This is my first Lenovo laptop and so far it has been a good experience. On the practical side, the laptop has a bigger screen than my old 15" Dell Latitude, but so much lighter that it doesn't hurt my back carry it around in a shoulder bag. It is very quiet. That battery seems last forever. Design-wise, being an architect, I think it is one of the best looking laptop out there that is not a mac (but so much cheaper). It looks very thin. It has a very interesting texture on the cover that reminds you of a Louis Vuitton bag. From gadget standpoint, beside the multi-touch pad, the computer come with a face recognition software that work with the built-in webcam, so you don't have to type in password ever again to log in.

I was just about to purchase this Ideapad U550 from but, I read the first review on this product and changed my mind due to the color comments. The ones on Lenovo website are DARK BROWN, I read these ones were BLACK but NOT... they're DARK BROWN also so don't get confused. The color is not bad, let's say it's different from the one I thought I was purchasing.

I recieved my deapad U550 (model # 374959U) on Dec 10th and so far it's up to spec, shipping was pretty fast (Free Super Saving) and got on the third day to South Texas.

If you don't mind getting a DARK BROWN laptop, this is a great value for $699.99 (4GB + 320GB), if you want to save $110 usd, get the 3GB + 250GB HD.

Note: Amazon's description says it's 1000GB but it's a 320GB HD.

I recently purchased the Toshiba L675D-S7052 laptop for my daughter to use in college. After reading some reviews I was a bit nervous, but went ahead anyway.

I am not disappointed with this purchase. In fact, I'm quite pleased.

I have a lot of confidence in Toshiba Satellite laptops. I started off with a Compaq, years ago. It was nothing but trouble. When I replaced it, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite. I have stuck with Toshiba ever since. I have found that they are a hardly piece of equipment that just keeps going...and going...and going.

One of the things that concerned me, with some reviews, was the claim that this laptop is flimsy, bendable and liable to all sorts of bad things. I have not found that to be the case whatsoever. This laptop is nicely protected and is made out of a decent, sturdy material. It appears it can take a beating bouncing around in someone's car and backpack. I'm both comfortable and confident giving this to a teenager.

I am a fan of AMD processors. In my experience, I have grown to prefer them over Intel processors. This Phenom II Dual core processor appears to have plenty of power and speed. One thing my daughter requested, was that she could play games on it. She made me promise her. Guess what? This little laptop does just fine.

I am not too happy with the fact that this Windows 7 (64bit) version regularly sucks up 1.2 gigs of RAM just to operate. But then again, it comes with 4 gigs of RAM and is upgradable to 8. If I decide to add more RAM, it will take me all of one minute to install it.

One of my main concerns was with the number of USB ports. Many of the new laptop models only have two. That made me nervous for a couple of reasons. One, laptops get hot, so we're going to need to plug in a cooling pad. Two, some external hard drives require two USB slots to power themselves. Three, beside the other two...where is she going to plug in her mouse?

I didn't need to worry. I sat the laptop on the kitchen table all day long as I updated Windows, installed software and tested out the system. After sitting on the table without a cooling pad for 8 hours, i picked up the thing and it was still cool. I mean...really cool. My personal laptop gets so hot you need a cooling pad. After running hard for 8 hours, this little unit felt like it was still sitting at room temperature. This is nice.

It is also my understanding, correct me if I am wrong, but the newer external hard drives are back down to one slot. However, even if I am wrong, we still have three to play with. So, if it takes two to run an external hard drive, we still have another slot for a mouse.

Here is a nice feature: Ever had trouble with a laptop when you are typing and the cursor moves all over the place because of the pressure on the keyboard? I have experience this with IBM, HP, Compaq and Toshiba units in the past. However, on this unit...just below the space bar...there is a tiny button that can disable the built in mouse pad. When you want to use it again, just press the button and it starts working again. Nice!

Only thing I didn't like very much, was that the keys seem to show fingerprints easily. However, they are easily wiped off.

The 17 inch screen is beautiful.

I am very pleased with this purchase.

After owning several problem-free Compaq and Dell laptops over the past 15 years, I made the mistake of buying my first Toshiba, a Satellite L675D. I admit that I was enthralled by the 17" display. Big mistake. HUGE MISTAKE. Less than four months after purchase, my wife opened the laptop one evening and the screen showed a crack in the upper right corner. I sent the laptop to the Toshiba repair depot and they claim she accidently damaged it and they want $325 to repair it. BTW, the entire system only cost $530 brand new. According to Toshiba Customer Relations (and I quote) the "accident was caused by opening the case too hard". I asked how that was even possible. Seriously, how do you open a laptop too hard? Toshiba said (and I quote), "you could have pulled too hard". If anyone from Toshiba is reading this, refer to T1-1174583 case # 110 331 001 320. I swear these are exact quotes. I currently own several Toshiba products, but after this experience I will never purchase another Toshiba product of any type in my lifetime. And now whenever I see someone even looking at a Toshiba laptop in Best Buy, HHGreg, WalMart, etc, I will warn them not to even consider Toshiba. Stick with manufacturers who stand behind their products. Toshiba is not one of them.

ASUS B53S-XH71 (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop Review

This was my first venture into ASUS land and it starts out with disappointment.

I pulled it out of the box and it would not power up. I called ASUS support who cordially walked me through a few tests and determined that there was a problem with the motherboard or the power circuit and the unit should be returned.

I'm hoping this is just a fluke. I opted for the exchange. Maybe I'll be able to give it a higher rating if I can get a working unit...

UPDATE:

The replacement unit is working like a champ. I had zero trouble exchanging it. In fact, they shipped the new unit before the old one was picked up from my house.

It's a bit bigger than I expected. It just barely fit into the backpack laptop case I had for my old machine. The touchpad click is annoyingly sensitive. I ended up disbaling that and just using the buttons for clicks.

The screen is a little disappointing out of the box. Tweaking the saturation, tint, etc.... improves it, but it's still not a fantastic display unfortunately. Other than that, I have to say the fingerprint reading software is a bit glitchy -it sometimes gives an error and will not let the user to login with his/her fingerprint. That's a bummer. The hard drive is also a bit on the slow side in terms of actual performance.

Why, then, would I give this a rating of good? Because this is in comparison to powerful desktops and significantly more expensive laptops. For the price, it's not bad.

Were I to buy this computer again, I'd probably pull the HDD and put in an SSD with a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. Then, I expect, this would be a truly fine machine.

This is the first time I've ever written a review even though I shop on Amazon ALL the time. I am so disgusted that I had to write this review. This the most pathetic excuse for a computer I've ever owned. Here's the brief history:

Purchased 12/22/11 from Amazon.

Loading software a week later (first use), CD drive broke CD (Office 2010) got stuck inside computer. Had to ship computer off to ASUS(I had to pay $41 in shipping to get it repaired) to retrieve CD and to unfreeze the system. Had the Office CD not been stuck inside, I would have demanded immediate refund from Amazon.

Got the computer back, and the repair sheet said optical drive had been replaced. Loaded software successfully. Next day when I tried to load a CD to reinstall my printer software, CD drive was broken. Computer wouldn't recognize drive at all. Sent it off again. Got it back around Jan. 27. Jan. 29, transferred data and started using computer.

Feb. 2, 10:30 a.m. (4th day of regular use), computer shut down out of the blue.

Since then, it has been shutting down and restarting out of the blue as well as after getting an error message saying "AMD driver stopped responding but has recovered." I have not called ASUS until today because I knew their response would be "send it in," and I don't have the time or patience to deal with that. But I did break down and call today. The ONLY solutions offered were (1) reinstall the operating system to see if the problem is a software problem. If that doesn't fix it, then go to option 2, send it to ASUS. I asked the tech support guy if reinstalling the operating system would mean that I would have to buy licenses for the software (such as Office 2010 and Word 2010), and he said yes. So, he wanted me to spend hundreds of dollars on new software just to see "if" the problem was a software problem. Of course I said no. I inquired about a refund, and he said I would have to request it through Amazon. Amazon's policy is 30 days for new computers. My mistake was that I didn't request a refund the first time the CD drive broke when I was installing software. I've learned my lesson.

Also, the customer service is pathetic. I was told today that they do not have the capability to remotely access a computer (like Dell and probably other companies do) to try to fix a problem. They also only have a "few" local contract tech people who can try to repair computers locally. I do not live in an area where there are any contracted tech people. So, my only option is to pack up and send off the computer to see "if" they can repair this piece of junk and hope they don't wipe the system clean.

I forgot to add the touch pad is the worst ever. If you just place your finger on the touchpad, the cursor jumps around as much as one inch. I have changed every setting I can find. Oh, and I forgot about the time the touchpad quit working all together. Luckily I had an old plug-in mouse, so I was able to use that to download a new touchpad driver.

I called my local computer guy, and he agreed about ASUS's customer service, and he said he unfortunately cannot recommend ASUS anymore solely becaue of the poor tech support.

So, this has been my personal experience as a first-time and last-time ASUS purchases. It has been nothing but one problem after another. I regret that I spent a good $1000 on this computer.

Roughly 4 years ago I purchased two Toshiba Satellite L505 laptops these were great... Good price and functionality.

With my kids frequently on the PC, I bought this laptop. While specs are better than the L505. It runs VERY slow. Even my nine year old says its slow and prefers the older laptop. The sound is also very "tinny," both when using the on-board speakers, as well as when you use the jack and output to external speakers.

When I called Toshiba, I got a recorded message saying my warranty expired even though I just received it ~ 6 days earlier.

This laptop works, looks nice, but again is very slow.

I chose this laptop over a few others for it's value and for the potential of what it can do with a few extra additions to the computer.

DESIGN

The design of the computer is excellent. It has a smooth metal brownish-grey finish, full size keyboard with numpad, and a nice responsive trackpad that is easy to use. The keyboard is chiclet style, and is easy to type on and responsive. One downside is that the keyboard is not backlit, but at the price this should be expected.

SPECS

It's important to note that the processor specs listed on Amazon at the time of this review are incorrect. As listed on MSI's website (and what came with my laptop), the processor is a Intel i7-3630QM, not an Apple A4 (do PC's even come with Apple processors?). The 3630QM is a quad-core processor at 2.4ghz, with a max turbo of 3.4ghz. The laptop also has a max RAM capacity of 16GB (only comes with 6GB, however), and has SATA3. These were both important factors for me for future upgrades to the laptop.

The resolution is 1366x768, so you do give up some screen space, but again at this price that is to be expected as well.

FUNCTION

The laptop comes with surprisingly little bloat, with a few MSI utilities and Winzip, of all things. I found the computer to be quite responsive, even with the 5400rpm drive. Gaming is nice with the 645M Nvidia card. I play a lot of SWTOR and Guild Wars 2, both of which worked well.

One thing to note on this laptop is that MSI puts a tamper sticker right over one of the screw holes on the backplate of the laptop, so that putting in upgrades will essentially void your warranty (the sticker states that warranty is void if sticker is tampered with). It's a risk you will take if you plan on upgrading right away.

The machine doesn't come with recovery disks, but it does have an MSI utility to burn recovery disks on the desktop.

The screen quality is good, not great. I wouldn't put it up there as the best, but it is quite clear with good color representation. Viewing angles are not great, as the color washes out quickly as you get at more of an angle. This has been my experience with most laptops.

All in all I feel this is a great value for the money. It features several mid to higher end pieces that will allow you to have an above average laptop to do some gaming on, especially with more RAM and an SSD upgrade. As is, it still can handle current games (but surely not as well as a high end laptop or desktop).

Now that I've had this computer for a few months, I'd like to modify my review. This computer has randomly shut down about 10 times now, a dozen blue screens of death related to USB 3. I'm sure these are either hardware or driver related and rescind my recommendation for this machine.

This is a very fast laptop. I'm a computer programmer that needs a very fast machine for pretty much everything I do, and this laptop is awesome.

This machine as it is listed has great upgraded options, like the best resolution screen, blu-ray, extra battery, and extra RAM, however, the hard drive it comes with is very slow. This laptop does have a 2nd hard drive bay and I bought the 225$ 128GB Kingston SSD, made it my primary drive, then made the original drive my secondary drive. To do this was no small task, but here's the steps to take:

Warning: I have no idea if this does or does not void your warranty, I can't find a clear answer to that.

1. Order this laptop

2. Order an SSD ($225-$250 for 128GB, or $360-$400 for 160GB)

3. Order a hard drive caddy and cable kit. HP sells it for 91$ after taxes and shipping, but you can get it for 41$ from newmodeus.com.

And by the way HP, I think that it's awful that the laptop didn't come with this in the first place. $41 for just a 3" cable is robbery and the $91 that you charge is two robberies and a beating.

4. If you get a SATA hard drive enclosure, things will be easier because you can connect the drives to the eSata port. Otherwise you will need to install the ssd to the 2nd hard drive bay, do the clone, then switch them so the SSD is in the first bay. Note: HP does NOT give you the windows 7 installation DVD, so the first thing you should do is make recovery DVDs through their utility. But also know that you can't use these DVDs to set up a new drive because they won't create the special boot partition HP uses. (I learned this the hard way)

5. Resize the original drive's partitions so they are altogether small enough to fit on the new drive. (And be sure to move them so the unpartitioned space is at the end) Easeus partition manager is by far the easiest way to do this, and you will need its boot cd it makes later, so I'd suggest buying the pro version and save yourself a headache or two.

6. Use either clonezilla (free) or Easeus partition manager pro ($40) to create a boot disk and clone the old drive to the new one. I used clonezilla, but Easeus is a lot easier.

7. After confirming the new drive works and is in bay 1, you'll notice the old drive is "Offline", meaning Windows can't use it. You will need to delete all of its partitions, create a primary partition and format it with NTFS in order to make it work. Use the Easeus professional boot disk to do this. Then when you boot Windows, go to disk management, right click the drive and select "Online" to make it Online, whatever that means.

Also note that the back panel to change the hard drives on this laptop was (at least for me) incredibly difficult to remove. I felt like I was surely going to break it with the force it took to pry it off. I've had several laptops in the past, and this one is the first one that I've had any difficulty replacing the hard drive. It's also the first one I've had with two hard drive bays.

So it's definitely a lot of work to get a faster hard drive in there and may be more trouble than it's worth, but in my opinion, buying a high-end laptop at this time without a solid state drive is foolish. So either find a different laptop that has an SSD, order this laptop customized from hp.com (considerably more expensive) to include an SSD, or stepping down to a more economy line laptop would all be better options than not having one.

Gaming

Did I mention that this laptop is good for gaming? The 1GB ATI Mobility 5850 is one of the fastest mobile graphics cards at the time of this review. If you want a faster gaming machine, you either have to spend over $3000 for a better gaming laptop, or get a desktop. This graphics card puts this machine on par for gaming with modern mid-range desktops, which is saying a lot for a laptop. It also allows you to have up to 3 external monitors. (Display port, VGA, and HDMI). However, I do have a problem with League of Legends crashing when using a 1920x1280 monitor through the display port. That is likely just the game, but who knows. It works fine with the VGA port.

Beats Audio

The Beats audio does not live up to the hype. I find the built in speakers to be rather crummy in my opinion. Previous reviews say "Good, for a laptop". I would add, "very slightly above average laptop speakers". The sound card is good, it sounds great with external bose speakers or headphones, but the laptop speakers suck. In fact, it took a lot of configuring to get them to not sound completely broken.

Screen

The display is better than any other laptop I've seen. It's at least equal to high-end macbook pros. It looks perfect from any angle, has great resolution, and is attached by sturdy metal hinges.

Keyboard and mouse

The keyboard is awesome, but I hate the touchpad. I love how it's the back-lit, island style keyboard. The numpad is great to have, the keys are all in the right spot and size. I'm always amazed at how few laptops or even external keyboards get it right.

The touchpad, on the other hand, is awful. I don't think I'll ever get used to it. I can't even drag things with it. I don't know if I'm just "doing it wrong", but it is literally impossible to use. I don't like touchpads in general, I prefer Lenovo button mice, but this one is particularly terrible. I can overlook this huge flaw in a laptop by always using an external mouse.

Connections

Awesome, Mini display port, hdmi, vga, eSata, usb 3, blu-tooth, wireless n, gigabit ethernet. All awesome. One thing though, instead of a microphone jack, it's a "headset" jack? I can't seem to use it as a microphone port either. This confuses me..

Power Supply

It's huge. But what do you expect? Big computer, big power supply.

HD Camera and microphone

Works fine, good for my uses, but not as good as I hoped it would be. The built in microphone sounds great.

Software

HP didn't go overboard with pre-installed software like it did with the last HP I bought, and Windows 7 is great. The partitioning of the drives is weird and the HP recovery software isn't very good. It doesn't come with windows disks, so again, be sure to immediately create the recovery disks.

Other

This laptop has no docking station options. This alone was almost reason enough to go with Dell or Lenovo, but neither of those were as good for gaming at the same price, nor did they match up in many other areas.

Bottom line, this is a power hungry, fast, big laptop. A great desktop replacement, but doesn't have the mobility or battery life as some people might like.

I hope this helps people, and doesn't utterly confuse everyone.

I ordered this for my wife and it arrived on time and build quality was flawless. The keyboard is outstanding and the aluminum case all the way down to the illiminated HP logo is magnificent. This is the first HP laptop I've purchased (I've had 11 in my lifetime inlcuding the 21 inch Dragon Laptop) that has really impressed me. I did a lot of research before I bought the Envy 17. This laptop is everything I hoped it would be. Very fast on all my apps. I usually run multiple apps and I've never noticed any lag at all. The keyboard is the best I've ever used and the backlighting is awesome. I was a little worried about the touch paid because I read some reviews that were critical of it. I actually like it quite a bit. It's bigger than I'm used to and very responsive. No problems with the buttons at all. The screen is really bright and clear. Movies are beautiful on this box. I use this as more of a desktop replacement so it's ussually plugged in. I can't really speak to the battery perofrmance. I will note that mine came with both a small (6 cell) battery and a bigger (9 cell) battery. Overall, this is the best computer I've ever owned and I love it.

-Quad core i7 chews through pretty much anything you can throw at it, from Photoshop to simple tasks.

-Flash barely taxes the CPU.

-Even with "only" a 5400rpm drive, it loads apps and docs fast.

-Screen is absolutely gorgeous, best laptop screen I've seen bar none.

-Dedicated number pad is very convenient.

-Rock solid construction.

CON:

-Big. This is a desktop replacement, not something that you travel with easily.

HP Pavillion dv6t Quad Edition. After abortive attempt by HP to divest its PC business, and some past negative dealings with HP rebates, I decided to update my Toshiba i7-740QM to this HP i7-2760QM. So after research, I bought one of these to see if the 2nd Gen Intel i-series CPUs really were "better". Bought through HP for quite a bit more money in Nov. 2011. Specs were very good, but I upgraded (part of the reason it was more expensive) the 5400 rpm hard drive to a 7200 rpm. Though there was a delay at Customs in Singapore (didn't know they were made in China), and a 6-day delay at Customs in Memphis, I finally got this supposedly improved laptop. Strike "supposedly". It ran much cooler than the very good Toshi Satellite 665. Toshi has 8 Gb 1066 RAM, the HP has 8 Gb DDR3 1333 RAM. Same MS Ultimate OS. Same Office Home & Business 2010. Norton 360 v.5.0. Toshi has a good 500 Mb DDR3 nVidia 330, the HP has a (much) better 2 Gb ATI DDR5. Beats Audio is much better than the Toshi's "good" Harmon-Kardons, though I have yet to hear any laptop speakers get even close to external add-ons. Both have a 720p HD, which is quite adequate for non-gamer/non-tech graphics (HP with the good, additional Intel 3000 for routine graphics on the CPU). The Toshi has a multi-DVD, the HP a Blu-Ray ROM/multi-DVD. The Toshi has 3 USB 2.0 ports, the HP two 3.0 (with charging capability, and on my desktop, an added "card" 3.0 runs 3-1/2 to 4 times faster backups and file transfers to 3.0 external drives than the prior 2.0) and 2x2.0 (one 2.0/eSATA). The Toshi booted in (minutes:seconds) about 1:30, the HP in :45 with Norton 360, Adobe, Office, etc. Office, Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, and several other programs on the HP came up in just over 1/2 the time as in the Toshi. The Toshi's 12-cell battery would last about 2 to 2-1/2 hours. The HP's 9-cell ran for a bit over 4 hours. The Toshi's black textured plastic barely shows a fingerprint, the HP's dark umber shows them readily. Both keyboards are similar. I've worked with computers since 1983, though not a tech person, and have lots of experience as an "advanced" novice-level user. The decision to purchase this model HP has so far (2 months) been a very good one, and I was so pleased at the improvements, I'm ordering a new one, for less cost, through Amazon (even though the new models will be out in a couple of months with the new "third generation" i-series CPUs). I gave this (reviewed) one to my son (an IT professional), who likes it also, replacing a very nice Dell Studio XPS (i5 CPU). This Amazon-ordered one has only a 5400 rpm hard drive, but I don't need (in my home and travel) the faster one. Remember, your MS Performance score is determined by the least fast component, which currently (assuming you don't go to an SSD hard drive) is about 5.9 on the 7.6 scale. The 5400 will score slightly lower than the 7200, but everything else critical to use (CPU, RAM, optical drive, etc.) runs significantly faster, often making up for the slower hard drive. And where the Toshi ran hot (not burning, but definitely uncomfortable after a short while of use), the HP gets warm, but not hot. Despite the fingerprints on the dark umber showing (not a performance issue), I found the fingerprint reader to be accurate and helpful (chuckle). So no miracle here, but a definitely worthwhile upgrade for me, and I saved nearly $400 from HP's website. The Toshi was very good 2 years ago, this HP is enough better to justify this under-$1,000 purchase.

Great price for a loaded i7 laptop, and the HP dv6t has overall very good reviews from multiple sites. The 8GB of RAM allows for fast Windows loading and a lot of multitasking, as well as the ability for future expansion. Can't believe this also includes a Blu-ray drive for the price, so I can take my BR movies on the go with me and watch them while traveling. I also like that this has the upgraded USB 3.0 ports, and the sound from the Beats audio is really great. I always thought a fingerprint reader was a novelty, but it really is nice and quick to sign on versus having to type a password each time.

Overall very pleased with this laptop and it's price. I couldn't find any other similar laptop for under 1k!

I purchased this laptop for my sister for school. She is an architecture student and we couldn't afford a mac.

I must say I am very pleased with the service. I was a bit worried though, because the estimated delivery was about 2 weeks and she was leaving the country for school but it came way before time and was shipped the day after I made the order.

The laptop itself ran smoothly and fast but it is heavy! and the charger is huge! Overall, it's not the best for my sister's field but it works well enough. I would definitely recommend this laptop for personal use or students.

I did a lot of research before I bought my new computer because the last one I had was horrible. I had an older Toshiba Satellite, which never worked quickly from the get-go. I was used to frequent internet shutdowns and major freezing issues in all programs. This is a major upgrade. It only slows when I'm running complex algorithms on large datasets, although even when aligning three whole bacterial genomes, I could still run others applications fine. I ran a program to annotate genomes which I was warned would take hours, but it took about 10 minutes. It stays pretty cool and quiet. Its a very attractive computer, especially with the bluish backlighting and the black aluminum case (the dark umber). The Norton security was a bit of an irritant, as I had to open Windows in safemode to enable its uninstallment. I do like typing on the keyboard for some reason, although it took some getting used to as the keys are spaced differently than on other machines. The speakers sound great! Definitely doesn't sound like a laptop; they also get very loud. I like the fingerprint pass a lot, but it can't be used outside of unlocking your computer and internet explorer, so its functionality is limited if you use a different web browser.

It is heavier than some of my friends' Macs or smaller computers, but this is because everyone else is buying 13" screens or less. I wanted a larger screen some things just can't be visualized in 13". The power cord adaptor is large, but you might not even need to carry it with you, as the battery lasts about 4 hours. The computer is thin and easy to carry. It feels like your holding a textbook. I can't think of any problems that I have had with this computer. Everything works as it is supposed to, and it was a great price for the functionality!

I bought mine directly from HP and it said it would take 2 weeks to arrive. But it actually came in about 5 days, I think.

I've had this laptop for two weeks now and so far it's been amazing.

PROS:

-Touchscreen's great, very snappy and responsive. Works well with windows 8

-Windows 8 is really nice with the touchscreen, all the security and all the new features.

-definitely worth the money, only 700 when I bought it

-beats audio integration is good with the headphones, not so much with the speaker

CONS:

-Average display, really not that noticeably great but it isn't noticeably bad either. what you expect to get for the price.

-Speakers aren't really that great, not for prolonged music listening, but work well.

Overall, a great all around laptop for students, workers and personal use.

I love this touch screen laptop!! The only problem it has no optical device. It was easy enough to solve with the purchase of a NU Slim USB Multi DVD burner.

The Laptop has been awesome. Had a hard time choosing between a nice tablet or a touch screen laptop. I love using Windows 8 (didn't take too long to figure out). My daughter loves the picture password and the touch screen has enabled my 3yr old son to navigate games without use of the mouse or keyboard.

At times I still would love to be able to fold the screen all the way back (Yoga style) and making selections (opening links, folders, files...) with the touch screen doesn't always respond well. I've also had a couple times when the WiFi wasn't working even with a connection and good reception.

Overall, I love it.

In the middle of working on this ultrabook it turned off and never came back. Calls to tech support were difficult (offshored support). They insisted that the power brick failed. Unfortunately the ultrabook was fully charged and was not plugged in. It would appear the motherboard has failed. Does anyone wonder why the "PC" market is hurting? It's not just tablets, or mobile, but quality and useability. The overall product, when working, is very good. Windows 8 is questionable as a useable operating system. Develop something easy to use and compelling from a productivity standpoint and people will come (i.e., Apple). The device is under warranty and HP will fix; why didn't I spend the extra money to get a MacBook! Hey HP high school students are paying attention and they might be your next set of customers...probably not.

I have used and tested this laptop at work. I needed a light weight, system with Toshiba's excellent keyboard. I needed a laptop I could replace the O/S with our company image without needing to spend hours searching for proprietary drivers. I was not disappointed, All the drivers to create where found on Toshiba's website with a easy to navigate menu. I over-wrote the Toshiba image which came on this system.

All the features worked. The boot time is around an incredible 10 seconds to the login screen. Everyone I have shown the laptop to are impressed with the light weight, fast boot time, excellent keyboard and display.

While this is not yet my "daily driver", it gives me the great service that my other Toshiba laptops have given me.

Asus Eee PC 4G Surf Celeron M 900MHz 512MB 4GB SSD 7-Inch Linux Reviews

I didn't bring my laptop with me on holiday because it's too heavy. Competition is intense for the computers at my son's house so I've staked out his Asus eee pc, and I've really fallen for this little gadget.

I'm not a Linux user but the interface is pretty seamless and believe me, I'm not missing Windows at all. This is a subnotebook the size of a paperback book, with a 7 inch screen and a full--though slightly small--keyboard. It has a 4GB SSD and 512k of flash memory, Intel Celeron M 900 MHz processor, and no optical drive to weigh you down.

My son has Firefox on it, and LaTeX Editor, and he pops up a Unix window when he needs it for work. The eee pc came preloaded with Skype and a webcam, OpenOffice tools (documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF reader), photo/music/video managers, a media player, integrated speakers, and some cool learning software. And of course ethernet.

I watched and laughed when my granddaughter, just turned eight, picked the Asus up one day when it was the only computer available; there was some eye-rolling (if you have an eight-year-old girl, you know what I mean) but in no time she had checked her email and was playing a game online.

Battery life is not huge but it's respectable and you get plenty of warning that you need to plug in. Intense use doesn't seem to be a problem, though this evening when I had four browser tabs and a few other applications open, then tried to open the "planetarium" software, the eee pc froze. I left it alone for a while and it worked the kinks out, even offering me recovery of my unsaved document (which happened to be this review).

This little object of desire would never replace my Thinkpad, but it would fit in my handbag and be the perfect traveling link to my online life. The netbook I've been coveting is two or even three times its size and now looks gross and huge to me, I'm SO glad I got to play with this eee pc--it has gone straight to the top of my wish list.

I wanted a laptop to just check emails, applications, and type documents. My Asus was the perfect choice. I don't miss windows either, the Linux system is pretty easy to figure out. I wanted something small that would fit in my purse and this works just fine. It also worked great with my digital camera.

There are some things that could be better. The keyboard is rather small and took some getting use to. The screen could be bigger but after frequent use you get use to it. I'll probably upgrade to an 8.9". I prefer more memory, but at the price I purchased it for, I'm not complaining. I love the fact that it loads so fast. The internet connection is faster than my desktop.

If you need something to just browse the internet and type a document, Asus is your man!

I use it for business and primarily for internet access and email that is what it does best! It loads in a second (mainly because it does not run on stupid Windows!) It's easy and quick to find wireless internet access points. Great full color screen, keyboard is close to full size and quick to adjust to. I just think it is a beautiful little computer for a 2nd home computer not a main computer (no CD drive, etc) but that is not what this little unit is about, really. It's all about secondary computer access that is what it is made for and what it does masterfully!

I bought mine for 399.00 and thought it was a steal. Now I have seen them for nearly half that price ! What a steal get this little gem you will never regret it.

I did not know what a netbook was until I purchased one! I knew I needed my own computer because my daughters had taken over the desktop and the laptop! I saw this teeny tiny one for $129 and thought why not! It's in my price range and I can buy it right now so...bam! Life changing! Could not possible live without!
