I've owned this machine for several years. About 3 months in, the touch buttons started to act oddly. At first the wifi would turn off unexpectedly. Sometimes the volume would go up and down sporadically or the treble and/or Base would adjust up and down. I knew this because it would show on the display which interrupted my work and sometimes turned the internet off.

I stupidly didn't do anything about this until after the warranty expired, but they still attempted to update some drivers and so forth for free despite being out of warranty. No such luck fixing it. I think I spent probably $3,000 on this laptop when I bought it.

I read online that the true fix for this problem is to dismantle the computer and wrap the button assembly in some kind of insulative tape. I did not do this. I just live with my internet occasionally shutting off and sometimes I can't get on the web at all until I bend and flex the laptop or push on the keyboard in just this one spot until it comes back on.

The machine performs well despite that complete defect. Other than that, the machine runs hot, the batteries last about a half hour fully charged because of the massive amount of memory and processor power. It is a massive and heavy machine for a laptop witch makes a great machine for computing, but horrible to take through the airport. I only found one laptop bag that would accomodate the size at the time.

The remote control is nice, although tied somehow to the HP entertainment suite of lame software that I have only once bothered to use.

My wifi has turned off twice during the typing of this post.

I will likely stay away from HP Products in the future.

I have had mine since 12/2010. It came with 1 500 gig 7200 rpm hard drive, There are 2 bays for hard drives. I installed another 750 gig in the second bay even though H.P. said it would not work. Went on line and found the connecter for 12 dollars. Their Tech support sucks unless you are from India and can keep up with them when they start getting very exited and talking faster,and faster and faster. This laptop is very heavy, but the good (far outweighs the bad) The full 1080P picture is outstanding and, the sound is like no other laptop I have ever heard, It actually has a sub woofer.(IT IS LOUD) This computer never froze on me. I got mine with 6gigs of memory 1gig 230 gforce 230m video card, I7920 processor,8 cell battery.intigrated tv tuner,antenna,remote/bluray player/dual layer DVD burner/no blu tooth/Brightveiw screen that can be seen from all angles with no ghosting/fingerprint reader/Windows7Pro and built in recovery that I used about a year ago just to refresh it. The cons however are low battery life,and crappy H.P. software such as the tone control for bass and treble which will pop up on screen and drive you nuts.Go to start/run/ msconfig/startup/tone control and uncheck it. This due to a static electricity build up that HP has been aware of and has done nothing about. You can take the battery out and hold your finger on the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge the static but it will come back within hours.Just set your bass and treble and disable the HP tone control. Another one is the H.P. TV tuner software,(Garbage) use media center for you TV. Be aware that when using media center your computer will not wake out of sleep mode to record any shows that you selected?? HP doesn't know either,They just get exited and start talking faster when you ask them why??? One more little problem is after about a year you will get a rattle from the sub woofer on the bottom of the unit. This is due to the cheap little plastic cover that covers the sub woofer itself. My buddy got the same computer and his started doing the same thing. I just took a rubberband and made a gasket and it solved the problem. This computer does get warm but not hot like some of the other reviews said. If you use it for any type of gaming get the NZXT CRYO LX aluminum note book cooler from amazon, it is AWSOME! All in All any computer will have it's problems, They all do! The problems with this machine I can deal with! It has been a killer computer for what I spent in 2010 at $1400 with the 3 year warranty.Now I see them on line for $2500 dollars, What is that all about? (GREED)

If you want a awesome large screen laptop for school, work, or multimedia, this is an awesome machine. I bought one 2 Christmas's ago and am typing this review on it now. I bought it for $1400 with the blu-ray and i7 proc with some free upgrades at the HP online store. I use it almost every day and it's been working very well. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it has a heating problem, so I can't recommend this machines for gamers. If you have heavy graphics going on, the graphics processor will overheat and there aren't enough vents to keep it cool. It will start to freeze, especially when it gets older. You will need a laptop fan, and if you use the HDMI port you will need to set the graphics to only laptop screen or hdmi out, and not both. This will help keep it cool, especially at 1080P. I use this computer for surfing, Netflix, HBO-GO, and music to my Sony Bravia TV/receiver. I DO NOT recommend using it as a DVD/blu-ray player as it will wear down the hardware, use a $100 player for that.

I bought it from Sam's Club back in 2010. And within 2 weeks of using it, I had to do a hard drive reset by the recommendations of HP customer service to fix the screen freezing issues and the crashes, which happened a lot for a BRAND NEW laptop. Took it back to Sam's Club and get my full refund. Even though I liked the design and the sound system and Sam's club price was cheap(799.99). But get frustrated with it.

In spite of the impressive specs this laptop was a huge disappointment. Even when fairly new this laptop would continuously run hot, the wifi and treble/base controls would continuously cycle themselves off and on again. All these problems persisted even after sending the laptop in for service. It died a mere two and a half years after purchase, I squeezed 7 years out of last laptop. Will not be coming back to HP for computers.

I bought this for my wife, a lawyer. She has no problems and it was very easy to get her up and running. Great battery life (I don't use it so I do not know the time but she is very please with the system). She takes it every where with her. The boot speed is excellent, 10 sec. She was using a full size notebook and did not like to take it to court it was very heavy and took a min. to boot.

This Ultrabook is excellent for her. We installed a remote hard drive hooked to her wireless router. This is used to store files since the hard drive is 256 Gi. All works well.

Would buy again.

I'm an IT guy, bought this for the boss, who is almost as technical as he thinks he is. He loves the machine. He was all about the Apple book because it was sleek and sexy, and with some luck we were able to talk him out of that and into a Windows machine. We chose this because specs were comparable to the apple, nice and thin and sleek. The specs are better and the machine runs as gret as expected. ASUS is known in our circle at least for fantastic and reliable parts. I build my servers with ASUS boards. The touchpad is large, which is against my personal preferance, but it is nicer to use than many others.

Worst laptop ever. The mouse trackpad is unreliable. Sometimes the cursor flies around in the middle of typing. It is unusable. The keyboard sticks. Randomly the backspace key would not work slowing me down. The letter "D" worked off and on and I was unable to password into accounts that had the letter "d" in it. My text gets randomly deleted sometimes. When I sent it in for repair it took a very long and it came back unfixed. I would not recommend this laptop to anyone!!

I purchased this Asus through Amazon late last year It worked perfectly initially but the keyboard is faulty and I have had to upload a virtual keyboard so that I can use it. Currently the "c" and the "k" are not working. There are others with the same problem according to the various tech web-sites. If it weren't for this extremely irritating factor I would recommend it highly as the screen, the portability are all exceptional. It is not as though it has been subject to over-use or travelI have had it mainly at home in benign conditions.

The only thing I will recomend for this laptop,is, buy another 4gig memory card and expand it to 8. I got a card at best buy for 25 bucks, and it really made a vast improvement in my computers speed. I'm sure you can find one at Amazon for less, but its well worth the investment. If you get a card, Youtube has many videos on how to install it. Trust me, it was easy. It took 5 min. You will not have to have a shop do it. Just remember to remove the battery before you do it, and have a small philips ready.

I have read reviews that said not very good speakers/sound. But, I have to disagree, mine is powerful & I love it! The offset track pad is in the perfect position for typing & very convenient. Alright, I wanted to wait a while before writing this review because most people review products pretty quickly after purchasing. This really leaves out a lot of important info considering the first month of ownership usually leaves out a lot of experience with any product. I bought this laptop January 8th 2011 for $750. It is now January 28th 2013. I think two years is enough time to get a good feel for a laptop!

So here's what I've found:

Once you eliminate the unnecessary processes that WINDOWS 7 runs, this computer is quick and can perform many things at the same time. Right now, I'm running Google Chrome, 2 windows open, with 9 tabs between them. I'm also running Vaio care (a very nice program that cleans up everything like defragging) as well as TrendMicro (my antivirus). I frequently use photoshop CS6 and chrome simultaneously without issues. ***I've given this laptop 4 stars out of 5 because Windows is a part of the computer and my issues are all with this operating system.***

It works well with my Bamboo Splash tablet, I absolutely love the HDMI output. I play movies all the time on my 42" 3D LCD TV directly from this laptop because it's so much quicker than my Blu-Ray player. Any issues with speed are directly related to the programs run. Just get rid of the stupid bloatware (Windows Media Player, internet explorer, basically any Windows stuff ) and get things like VLC Media Player, Google Chrome, etc. As long as you take care of this computer, it's well worth the money. Nothing is broken on it, USB ports all work, HDMI works, SD card slot works, all the keys are still functioning properly. The only wear you can really see is that the matte finish on the keyboard is slightly worn off on some keys (you can only see it when you're looking at it from a strange angle). It makes the keys look a *little* more glossy. The little bumps on the mouse pad area are also slightly worn off in the center, something I noticed about a week ago.

It's impossible to keep the outside clean of fingerprints, I've tried everything, but now I've just accepted it.

Overall, I'd recommend this computer for any daily user. I'm a college student and it serves every purpose I need for classes and for hobbies of mine. I've never had a computer that wasn't outdated within a year, considering I've had this one for 2 years and it's still working perfectly, I don't plan on getting a new one any time soon!

I bought this laptop in the end of 2010 as a christmas bonus for myself from BestBuy.

I was skeptical about it, because i was so used to my old laptop and i tried out any, many laptops but ended up returning them because i didnt like them and could get used to them. This laptop has a great performance rate. Only a fool would dislike this laptop. I loved the color as well. Its fast, no lags. I can actually play Fifa 12 on this without lags. FOR REAL! I had gotten this laptop back in 2011 as a late b-day present, and I have to say compared to my old 2004 Sony laptop, it's a LOT better!

I only wished I bought it online and not from Best Buy, reason being they replace the hard drive on my laptop with a much cheaper, non Sony part. Long story short lost everything about a month ago.

Though I did notice it freezing and such, I blame Best Buy 100%.

Now the laptop runs well again, the only issues I have with it is the slower boot up when you turn it on, and the fan going off for a while, it's not that loud but it can get on your nerves.

Don't bother buying it from the store, because you might get ripped off the same way.

The Color is beautiful and rich, but enjoys keeping fingerprints everywhere.

I highly recommend this laptop for anyone out there! (Just stay away from Best Buy)

I bought this laptop for my mother. It arrived within 2 days of my purchase which has given me plenty of time to set it up for her to be able to jump right in for christmas.

The build quality of this laptop is quite nice, the trackpad is more than big enough, the keys and buttons are all responsive and easy to find.

windows 8 is a different beast of an OS, but it feels like a breath of fresh air and a logical extension of the legacy windows platform.

The hardware specs are very nice for a laptop. If you are looking for power gaming, turn away. If you are looking for a portable family computer though, for the price this is a great piece of hardware. 4GB of RAM is adequate, the processor is snappy for being a dual-core, and 500GB of space is more than enough to house music, videos, pictures and apps that will undoubtedly accumulate through use.

For the price of this laptop, it is more than worth the purchase.

I purchased this laptop just to upgrade from my netbook, so I could have something to do homework and travel. I wasn't looking for a desktop replacement; I have a real desktop beast for home use. When I got it home, I did some re-configuring on it, cleaned the the bloatware off, and added a Win7 style shell. I was surprised how fast it was. So I loaded WoW to see if it could run that (I normally only play on desktop). I was able to fly around Orgrimmar on medium graphics settings with little to no lag. For a machine that I paid so little for, I am very impressed.

It is unfortunate that this very capable machine gets poor reviews because the operating system is not as user friendly as its predecessors. I am not an Asus fan boy, but I have never been disappointed by their products.

The computer is fine, however it appears that it is Win 8 32 bit not 64bit. Unable to address all the memory in the system. The packaging was a joke, The computer was in it's original box and then placed in a shipping box with NO packaging so it could just slide around during shipping and the shipping box was quite a bit larger; really sloppy work. Win8 is a joke, I wish I could have gotten this with Win7. The first thing I installed was a utility to give me the Win7 start button. Not to much bloatware though. A good basic laptop so I'm pleased but the packaging and Win8 knocked off 2 stars for me. My bad, it is Win8 64, Installed IOBit start 8 and a much better experience, still it's 2 stars off for the packaging.

I've had several Asus computers before. I've always loved them. It seems the quality of materials for has gone down significantly since my last purchase a few years ago. The keyboard has poor response, and I often find myself going back to correct missing letters that I have apparently not hit hard enough. The keys also "bubble" up in the center of the top two rows, it's unsightly and they make an obnoxious noise when I have to it them.

Other than those issues, and maybe the fact that Windows 8 is a pain to figure out, I like this computer. It does what I need it to.

Acer made a good name for themselves by providing reliable desktop computer components, and that reputation carried over when several years ago, the company advanced into providing laptops. Now after owning three of them, I have never been disappointed in the operation or reliability of any of them. This one is very small and solidly built and it has a brushed aluminum finish I really like in contrast to the nice shiny metallic finishes usually associated with Acer laptops.

So now we enter into a new era of Tablet computing and Windows 8, and it is a definite change from the previous computing we learned so well. Advancing cautiously with the help of Acer's desktop, Windows eventually revealed that it is still the same old Windows inside with a new graphical sugar coating and some new enhancements that make it very appealing for use with the new Touch Screen Tablets that are steadily gaining in popularity.

Windows 8 has your back if you still find better use for a computer than a Tablet, so this Acer has the familiar touchpad mouse built into its keyboard, but I still prefer using a BlueTooth mouse whenever possible. Additionally, many Android users may find Windows 8 is very similar to using the data provisions of their cell phones, complete with an endless number of available apps.

This little 11.6 inch wonder in electronic wizardry will always remain readily available whether I am at work or travelling. Sized the same as the newer Tablets, I consider this laptop to be better provisioned, and best of all, it sells for about half the price of a top-rated Tablet. It is provisioned with the least expensive version of a set of three new CORE Intel processor configurations that increase in cost at each level of complexity, but really don't provide enough in additional abilities to warrant a higher price over what I already have in this very basic laptop computer. This i3 runs very cool and is built into the smallest laptop frame Acer provides, and I even have a little accessory carrying case for it.

This laptop is too small to accommodate a mounted optical disk drive, but that is easily fixed since there are several external CD/DVD RW drives available at a nice price, all provisioned to plug into a laptop's USB ports for immediate use. Regardless, Acer Support provides a Recovery Flash Drive for this computer that can be plugged into one of its USB ports if a recovery to factory specs ever becomes necessary.

With a little more time researching some of the other similar laptops available from Acer before purchasing this one, chances are I would have also seriously considered the Acer Aspire One laptop. That would have saved another couple hundred $$ since it is a very close duplicate to this one. The only real difference is its slightly slower Intel processor, but it also has a smaller but more practical 320 Gig hard drive, which for all my needs is still HUGE. Either one of these laptops is perfect for students who must store and do their work on a fully provisioned computer, and there are also some AMD provisioned 11.6 Acer laptops as well at an even lower price.

Okay this is a pretty capable little notebook computer. The i3 CPU will make it considerably faster than the older generation Intel Atom chips. The quality seems decent for a $450 part.

Now here's some information that can save you some grief:

1. The BIOS is set up from the factory so that you can only reach it from the Windows 8 environment. I spent the better part of an hour trying different keys and combinations in a futile attempt to reach the BIOS aggravating. The following is courtesy of user "gr8stapeoftx".

Personally, I don't like this setup. I Like the Bios to be agnostic of the operating system. What happens if someone decides to downgrade to Windows? Fortunately, once you reach the BIOS screen from Windows 8, you can set the bios to work in legacy mode. After that, the F2 key will get you into the bios upon bootup.

2. Getting to the internals is incredibly easy. I think it is literally just one screw to remove the bottom chassis plate. Upon removing the plate, the RAM is a breeze to upgrade. There are two slots, and one of them is populated by a 4 GB chip. You can add another 4 GB chip for a total of 8 GB. Doesn't get easier than that.

3. Hard drive now this is much more tricky. If you are looking to replace the conventional hard drive with an SSD drive like I was, pay attention. Many of the SSD drives on the market will *not* work with this computer (Sandisk Extreme, Kingston, OCZ Vertex, Crucial M4, etc.) Why? Because they are all a tad too tall at around 9.5 mm. They must be of the 7 mm variety. The Samsung and Transcend drives seem to work because they are around 7 mm.

All in all, this is a pretty good computer for your money. I wish the battery life was more like 6 or 7 hours, but the battery is not sealed, so you should be able to buy aftermarket batteries down the road.

This is a nice, solid, basic laptop. I've only had it for about a week, so can't speak of its longevity. Physically, it is very solid. I've noticed some laptops out there have a little bit of wiggle in the screen or keypad, but this one is solid, which is impressive for being so small and thin. They keyboard is easy to type on for me, but I have tiny hands... my larger-handed husband has some trouble, but its not his laptop. The mousepad is OK, I would prefer dedicated left and right click buttons rather than pushing the pad itself for this, but I'm getting used to it. There are a lot of USB ports for being such a small computer. I also appreciate that the screen is very clear and bright... so bright, I even had to turn it down. The screen is also wide-screen, so even though the laptop is 11 inches, it is almost just as wide as my 15 inch... I was concerned it would be difficult to read being so small, but this was not the case. The sound is weird, the speakers are on the bottom of the laptop, so if its on my lap, my lap mutes a lot of the sound... when its on a hard surface, its fine. But, I don't plan on using the speakers, I use headphones if I ever REALLY need to listen to anything anyway. Its no bother for me, so it wasn't a negative, but others might find that info useful. The computer was super easy to set up, its processor is VERY fast, websites pop up quickly. I personally don't like Windows 8, but there were plenty of websites out there (CNET mostly) that helped me download some free programs to bypass some of the annoying Windows 8 features (start screen, start menu, hot corners, etc.)... but this is to no fault of the laptop. Solid laptop and a great price. Highly recommended.

The computer itself feels and looks fantastic. I have been using this since early December 2012 and I would give it 5 stars except for the following reasons:

1. Acer support (out of India?) is incompetent. They don't take time to read the description of the problem and just send you cut and paste solutions that have nothing to do with the issues. If you are unfortunate enough to have to deal with their support demand to have the issue escalated as that was the only way I was able to get a resolution.

2. Windows 8 without a touch screen is not a good combination in my opinion. Some people like it but I don't. Windows 7 is not an option for this computer. Acer support (see above) initially told me that I could buy the Restore DVDs to downgrade the computer to Windows 7. So I paid $35 for an external DVD and $20 for the disks from Acer and then embarked on a week long test of patience because the DVDs would not install and Acer Support just kept sending me unrelated documents on how to install the disks. After demanding that someone actually read what I had written, looked at the screen shots, etc. I was finally advised that they do not offer Windows 7 for this computer. What happened to the $20 for the restore disks? Acer kept it.

3. When seated at the desk, I use external speakers for better sound. If I am using Skype and I disconnect the external speakers the internal speakers take over as one would expect BUT the internal microphone quits working. To get it working again, I have to end the call and start over again. What does support have to say? Well, the sent me cut and paste responses that have nothing to to with the problem and in the end, the supervisor said something like "That there is nothing wrong that is the way it works."

4. The wireless connection seems to enjoy randomly dropping the connection with my 802.11 N router. I don't experience this problem with my Dell laptop or my Asus desktop connected with a wireless adapter and I have also substituted two other routers but it still drops connection even when it is in the same room as the router.

The Good:

Super light, the battery lasts a long time and recharges quickly. The display is excellent and the keyboard, while compact, is easy to use. It feels sturdy, is compatible with all of my legacy hardware and software once I added software to restore the Windows 7 type of menu.

By the way, if you want to restore the Windows 7 menu functionality then Google "Windows 8 menu add-on" and read the CNET review. I tried both Pokki for Windows 8 (free) and Start8 ($5) and either one is up to the job.

Would I buy this again? No.

The laptop is great when plugged into a wired network, but is honestly hopeless on wifi.The wireless card drops internet connection every 5 or so minutes, and sometimes it comes back on its own, sometimes you have to open and close the wireless adapter, sometimes you have to reboot the laptop to fix it. I have two other laptops in the same room, a dell and an asus, both work great on wifi without problems. The wi fi signal is great. I have looked online and read a few reports, wifi problems appear fairly common with Acer laptops with this qualcom wireless adapter.

Because I purchased and installed office on this machine, I am now stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can return the laptop for credit and lose the $120 I paid for office because I have to buy a new copy, or I can keep the laptop without working wireless. Some choice that is! 2 stars is generous. Dont buy this laptop if you need reliable wi fi connection.

I bought this laptop for my daugher as a back in school gift, after two weeks, it is time for a praise.

Though I am not a tech savvy, I helped her to set up the laptop, and tried to run a number of applications at the same time including movie player, Photoshop, oh la la, to my surprise there was no crash at all, it was smoothly run and no heating over, even after two hours of test! Battery is good, after one hour and half with many apps, the gauge still showed 55% full capacity.

My daughter likes it very much, as she loves the elegant silky color, and the thin, lightweight aspects as well as a powerful machine for a high school student. I am very pleased with the purchase!

Was afraid of getting windows 8 plus a new computer. This set up in seconds, took a little longer getting to Windows 8 but was surfing in a few hours. The built in tutorial made the change much easier than I ever expected. I am no computer tech so I just followed the directions and have no problems with this computer. Love the speed, lighted keys, light weight and ease of transition. Now windows 8 is another story!

Perhaps I got a bad unit but this PC cannot keep a WiFi connection even if its a couple of feet from the router!

The signal starts off strong, then after a few minutes, it goes to "Limited" connectivitity status.

The trackpad is at times unresponsive and does not properly respond to right-click.

Overall performance (just basic web surfing) is laggy and trying to maintain more than a few browser tabs is pretty taxing on the mediocre I3 processor.

Regrettably, I had to return this laptop to Amazon. I picked up a much cheaper (non touchscreen) HP Envy 15 for about $100 less. Its much faster, has better trackpad response and most importantly, it holds a rock steady WiFi connection, even from the other side of the house!

If you are looking for this type of PC, consider looking into the HP Envy line. For about the same price, you can get one with a touch screen if that feature is important to you.

Against the advice of friends, I bought the Acer Aspire after reading PCMag and other reviews suggesting it as a good replacement for a PC. The laptop arrived, looked ok, powered up but the screen was black. Spent quite some time trying to figure out what went wrong. Was told that it was most likely a failure in the mainframe, battery or power cord all of which would need to be replaced. I was very disappointed but realized that cheap is cheap and opted to return it and get a more expensive competitor (HP Envy) and so far so good. I wouldn't recommend the Acer even if you're just looking for a cheaper option for a child. Unreliable and cheap. I also want to mention that the laptop arrived a day later than promised by Amazon. First time in a long time that happened. All around a bad experience I won't be repeating.

I give it 4 stars not because it can compare to a more expensive computer but because, considering the price, it's actually a good purchase for any one looking for a computer to browse the web, watch movies, listen to music, all of the normal activities. If you're looking for a computer capable of handling high-end games, video editing, or more intensive programs then you're not looking for a laptop under $300. Everyone else can get by just fine with this product.

Works flawlessly. Be careful of some confusion in reading reviews online. There are a lot of Compaq CQ57 out there. This is a CQ57-489WM (big difference! This is a Dual Core, not single or CoreDuo). Granted it is not a gaming computer but for the same price as a small net-book its the way to go. It Runs HP drivers and user friendly HP updating programs (which I have on the rest of my computers and love). It comes with 2GB RAM but is upgradable to 8GB for about $40. Which I highly recommend. Never an issue in the last 4 months I have owned it, and it is used extensively daily.

I was on Maui with a new Toshiba laptop in the $400 price range I had bought from Best Buy. The hard drive died within a few months and so I needed a quick replacement since no Best Buy on Maui and I couldn't go grab my other laptop at home on another island. I swung into Walmart and picked up the cheapest laptop I could find, it was this model. But low and behold, the thing is reliable. Surfs the web no problem, plays my itunes collection no problem, does Word processing no problem, watch Youtube no problem, burn cds and dvds no problem. It can play old video games no problem. For more modern games thats what my high def tv and xbox 360 is for along with my ipad. Long story short, great computer for someone who doesn't need all the fancy bells and whistles (of course dvd players were once considered whistles in laptops before). Plus its old fashion. When the battery dies out, I can cheaply pop it out and get a replacement so its low maintence, unlike my Apple stuff I got to send back and pay at least a $100 to replace the battery now days. I would say if you don't know what computer you want get this one cause it will do what you need. The biggest crime in computing is always being enticed to buy a $1000+ computer when you don't use any of the functions. Unless you're making movies, playing video games, or need some super high tech program for work or your hobby, stick with what does the job unless you're into fashion, then I would advise spending it on Apple Macbook pro or Air and staying away from those Ultrabooks until they make better ones.

This is a good laptop for the average computer user. It gets over six hours of battery life in the right computer settings. It runs minecraft pretty well (not perfect though). The sound on it is very good through headphones. The speakers are ok but you would expect that from a laptop. The reason for only four stars though is this model has the infamous Ralink 5390 802.11 b/g/n wireless adapter in it which has pretty poor connectivity I had low and intermittent connection even being ten feet from the router. I have ordered a new wireless card it is an intel I am hoping that it is compatible with this notebook. I highly recommend intel networking equipment.

This is the base 11.6 late-2010 MacBook Air, with 4GB of RAM rather than 2GB of RAM. There are a lot of reviews on the MacBook Air and 11.6 in general, and you either like this form factors with the lower powered processor or you don't. I personally do, and find it quick enough for the tasks I care about and the SSD makes things load quickly.

The question many people have is whether 2GB of RAM is enough. Because it is a one-time choice. There is no way to add more RAM after you buy it, because it is soldered onto the motherboard. Personally, I think the extra hundred bucks is worth it, so this is a good compromise, the base model with the extra RAM. That said, I've barely seen a need for it based on my usage. With Safari open, Citrix running, Word going, and iTunes, I usually still have 2GB free. But there are some times when I'm doing light photo editing that I'm glad I have the extra RAM, and there always is the speculation that more RAM will be needed in the future.

So, my view is: Great machine -worth it to get the 4GB version if you've got the cash. But if you don't and it's document editing, surfing, and other light tasks, 2GB is more than enough.

"You know the nearer your destination the more you're slip sliding away."

The one single thing that irks me about a Mac is that it is slippery! It is slipping around in my lap right now.

I tried to ignore the "slickness" of the aluminum casing..........largely because I believe that Mac's aluminum casing has superior strength and durability to whatever else is out there. But even if I dismiss the "slipperyness" of the aluminum casing I find that I still am perplexed by Apple's choice of the rubber feet.

Why are these slick too? Is it an environmental reason? There are much more rubbery, sticky or grabbing synthetic materials that Apple could have used for the four feet or pads under the chassis. Even after I discovered how difficult it is to stop one of these Mac portables from slipping from my grip I surely thought that it would stick to my countertop.......not really.

I am new to Apple these last three weeks. I bought the MacBook Pro 13" three weeks ago and turned it in because it was a little too big. This Air may be just the size that I want. But regardless of which model I get I am forced to work hard to keep it in my grasp or on my lap. Hey Mac engineers!......as smart as all of us know you are......why have you overlooked this? What's up Apple?

p.s......psssst: other than the above, I really enjoy the facts that this machine is light in weight and is so compact.......good job Mac! The quality is there....outstanding! I think I am likely to keep this Air....if I can just hang on to it!

As for the hype in looks, outside the thin body, this silver color makes the mac very dull and not classy

As for the 2 USB ports, one should (because of power demand) be used to run an external drive like a Targus DVD player, which obviate purchase of a Superdrive; i.e. a aftermarket multiport USB hub (e.g. by Targus) won't have juice to play a ext. DVD drive

the keyboard in my opinion is not exactly suited for my liking; the spacing of the keys somehow is awkward and the keys do not give a good feel to one's touch. The big disappointment however is the display; one LCD by a Sony (e.g VGN TZ series) laptop would beat this display hands down. As for the performance, the Mac 1.4G 4gRam is stellar for boot up speed, although overall performance is not stronger than a good Netbook like a TimelineX or Aspire 1810T

there are no SD card slot, no Internet Jack or any other jacks. Accessories include only the power adapter which is very pleasing to the eyes.

I still recommend this 11.6" Air to all users that have no problem with using Apple operating systems, and suggest that they go by the option that comes w/ 4GB Ram.

I take one star away bc of the average display but cannot deny the fact that Apple has made a very good product of commendable portabililty and simplistic operation. Other competitive netbooks are not inferior but most of them will come loaded w/ bloatwares while the Mac does not. This unit is still highly recommended to many, but for me for the price paid does not amount to a full satisfaction because outside looks, good performance should be packaged and come with a gorgeous LCD, good KB and more ports, especially when this slim design is past its being a first generation

I needed to replace a laptop and did not want sink a fortune into a new system. My prior system was a Dell which lasted 3.5 years before collapsing, and with good care on my part, so I was very disappointed in its performance. This summary is based on one week of experience with the new laptop.

My main use of the laptop is to check and compose email, do internet searches, and draft various written pieces. Most of my intense work is done on a desktop system; the laptop is a convenience device as I use it.

I wanted a Windows System 7 for compatibility reasons and I've heard negative impressions of Windows System 8.. Acer was recommended to me by IT technicians and a salesperson in a big box store. The main reason I purchased it is because Acers are said to not require repairs or service and are said to be reliable. I also looked at user reviews prior to purchase.

My prior system weighted 7 lbs and this one is around 4 pounds, so the Acer will be easier to take on travels.

I am satisfied with the performance of the laptop to date. It was easy to set up, with easy to follow directions. The only bothersome aspect is the "mouse pad" which varies from being sometimes unresponsive to overly responsive. To "click" on an item you press the bottom left of the "mouse pad" and to edit (such as copy/paste, etc) you press on the bottom left corner. I find this awkward to use. Some reviews state that the space bar is unresponsive except in the middle only, but I have not found that to be a problem. Using the "mouse pad" is not easy. It is very difficult to control the cursor it flies all over the place.

The overall appearance of the laptop is satisfactory. The CD/DVD drive looks a bit flimsy but works adequately. The sound is acceptable for a laptop. There are a lot of icons for products and services in which I have no interest, but these can be removed.

Except for the mouse pad and related issues, this is a good, serviceable laptop. The 4GB Ram and 500 Gb hard drive is a very attractive feature of this notebook.

Purchased and built mine directly from HP minus the Blue-Ray Player. I was satisfied with my purchase although I wish the user had more control over the NVIDIA display. When the laptop starts up you can see the colors switch. Although the black brushed aluminum finish is very nice it seems as though it's not as nice as my Macbook Pro. It seems like there is no finish that seals the brushed aluminum and it must be fairly dense because I take great care of my things and it already has light scratches where the black has come off and small dents after months of use. I don't even take it out most of the day. I'm hoping HP will replace mine and that the next one will be better but I'm not sure about that. Not feeling very happy with the quality of the materials and the version I built was not super cheap.

I picked up this laptop at my local Best Buy for $299. I read the reviews on the Best Buy site before purchasing this laptop, and the majority of them that had complaints had complaints of encountering blue screens of death within a short amount of time of purchasing the laptop. Others had issues with the sensitivity of the touch pad, but overall there were positive reviews.

While I was removing some of the unwanted software like the Best Buy app, I encountered a blue screen of death. This was because when I restarted to complete the uninstall of some of the programs, it did NOT install the windows updates. Once these were installed, I haven't had a problem since. So once you get your computer, make sure you shut down to install updates, and then commence removing the bloatware.

Pros: Nice screen size, has good enough specs to run several mildly heavy programs at the same time, HDMI port, excellent keyboard (it doesn't have the traditional bracketed keys, but the more embedded buttons like the Mac Books, plus a num pad), solid design, runs very quiet and cool (extremely cool. With it sitting on my lap it does not even get warm.), good battery life if you use the energy management for it, fingerprint reader, facial recognition, and built in webcam.

Cons: Touch pad is a little sensitive, but I came from using a Thinkpad where I used the touch point mouse. It may just be because I need to get used to it. External mouses are always a compromise.

Overall a very good computer for the price.

I bought this because my wife and I are both in school, and one laptop is not enough. I was looking for something to run MS Office and a web browser. This was by far the most feature laden machine in its price range. It has fingerprint lock, webcam, 4GB RAM, and a dual-core processor. Once I got it home, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was no bloatware other than the BestBuy app, so I did not have near as many programs to uninstall as usual. They advertise fast boot ups, and mine boots in about 45 seconds, much faster than my Toshiba. I picked this up from BestBuy for $299 and would gladly make the purchase again.

this is the first time I've used finger recognition for security and the idea is great and easy to implement but when you come to use it it takes a lot of time to process your swipe. It is much faster to just type in your password. I loved that you could project your screen to your HDTV through HDMI for such a low price. The touch pad was awful and responded differently almost every time. This touchpad was the most frustrating touchpad I've see tried. Forgive my typos as these are by the webOS spellchecker from my typing on their Bluetooth keyboard hooked up to their touchpad.

Gateway NV51B15U) and decided on the Lenovo because it's dirt cheap AND has decent specs.

Pros:

-AMD E-processor is fast enough even for basic 3-D gaming;

-Has HDMI and 4GB RAM, which many budget laptops lack;

-Build quality is solid for a budget notebook;

-Lenovo has above average customer service.

Cons:

-This is a generic rant My 2001 Powerbook was 1-inch thin and 5.5 lbs. Ten years later and PC makers still can't give me a skinny 15-inch laptop for under $1,000?!!
