I needed a VERY inexpensive computer for my worker to use at the scanning station. This arrived very quickly and is actually a very nice machine. All we will be using it for is scanning documents and burning CDs so it may not be fast enough for more complex users but it sure is nice to have this machine here. (The old one literally died right as I was bringing this one over to the station). It jumped right on the internet. it did have that annoying "Do you want Norton Antivirus" crap on the first bootup but I got rid of that.

I ordered one of these from Dell sight unseen. I ordered the Ubuntu Linux version customized with an 8gb SSD, 1gb of RAM, no Bluetooth and no Webcam. it's a great little computer. I mostly got it for checking email, surfing the web and making Skype calls while I'm traveling. Small size and light weight were the main features I was looking for. The Mini 9 is half the size and weight of my full size laptop.

I chose Dell over Asus and Acer because I think Dell makes better quality products. The Asus eeePC looks kind of cheaply made. I didn't order the Acer, because I've had hardware problems with Acers in the past and Acer tech support pissed me off. The HP netbooks look good, but I've been a bid Dell fan for years. Dell is also the only manufacturer that ships netbook computers with Ubuntu, the most popular Linux operating system. I am switching to Linux because Microsoft pissed me off with Windows Vista. I switched to Ubuntu Linux on my full size old Dell laptop as well.

So here is my review. This little computer is very solid and well built. I think it will last for years, like the other Dell products I've owned in the past. The battery life is good. It's rated at 4 hrs, but other reviewers claim 3 1/2 hours. That's still pretty good. The card reader slot is a nice feature. I picked up a 4gb SD card from Amazon for $10 for extra storage. Some XP users even get a 16gb SD card and move their My Documents folder to it do save hard drive space. The 8.9 inch 1024x600 screen is very sharp. It's a great quality screen, but it is kind of small. Oldsters will need to get out their reading glasses to use it. I think any computer this small would have the same problem though. I would give this computer 5 stars, but the keyboard takes some getting used to. Some of the keys like ' are hard to find and the shift key is small. I find myself hitting the touchpad while typing and it makes the cursor jump all around. Now I use a USB mouse instead of the touchpad. It works a lot better that way. I can live with the small keyboard. It's just a compromise for the small size, weight and portability.

Computer didn't come with Microsoft internet. Also had a few scratches on the outside. Otherwise it was in fairly desent condition. Felt like I paid to much for it to have scratches and for there not to be any programs on it. I'm having to send to the geek squad and have programs installed in order to use. I originally got this for my 9 year sons birthday and he couldn't even use it. He enjoys netflix and I couldn't install the programs in order to use it. My son was really bummed. It did arrive on time.

I ordered my Dell Mini 9 on 9/20/08. The battery has failed and won't charge. I wish I had checked other brands before I ordered this one. The hard drive is small and there is no CD/DVD drive. I purchased an external drive (Targus) and found that I had to purchase software to support the DVD drive. Very disappointed.

I bought this laptop for my daugher as a back in school gift, after two weeks, it is time for a praise.

Though I am not a tech savvy, I helped her to set up the laptop, and tried to run a number of applications at the same time including movie player, Photoshop, oh la la, to my surprise there was no crash at all, it was smoothly run and no heating over, even after two hours of test! Battery is good, after one hour and half with many apps, the gauge still showed 55% full capacity.

My daughter likes it very much, as she loves the elegant silky color, and the thin, lightweight aspects as well as a powerful machine for a high school student. I am very pleased with the purchase!

Was afraid of getting windows 8 plus a new computer. This set up in seconds, took a little longer getting to Windows 8 but was surfing in a few hours. The built in tutorial made the change much easier than I ever expected. I am no computer tech so I just followed the directions and have no problems with this computer. Love the speed, lighted keys, light weight and ease of transition. Now windows 8 is another story!

Perhaps I got a bad unit but this PC cannot keep a WiFi connection even if its a couple of feet from the router!

The signal starts off strong, then after a few minutes, it goes to "Limited" connectivitity status.

The trackpad is at times unresponsive and does not properly respond to right-click.

Overall performance (just basic web surfing) is laggy and trying to maintain more than a few browser tabs is pretty taxing on the mediocre I3 processor.

Regrettably, I had to return this laptop to Amazon. I picked up a much cheaper (non touchscreen) HP Envy 15 for about $100 less. Its much faster, has better trackpad response and most importantly, it holds a rock steady WiFi connection, even from the other side of the house!

If you are looking for this type of PC, consider looking into the HP Envy line. For about the same price, you can get one with a touch screen if that feature is important to you.

Against the advice of friends, I bought the Acer Aspire after reading PCMag and other reviews suggesting it as a good replacement for a PC. The laptop arrived, looked ok, powered up but the screen was black. Spent quite some time trying to figure out what went wrong. Was told that it was most likely a failure in the mainframe, battery or power cord all of which would need to be replaced. I was very disappointed but realized that cheap is cheap and opted to return it and get a more expensive competitor (HP Envy) and so far so good. I wouldn't recommend the Acer even if you're just looking for a cheaper option for a child. Unreliable and cheap. I also want to mention that the laptop arrived a day later than promised by Amazon. First time in a long time that happened. All around a bad experience I won't be repeating.

First the good. I liked the price. A lot of value for the money. Laptop looked new. All inputs which I checked worked. Basic software is installed. Boots fast compared to an XP machine. Screen is bright and full. Now for the bad. The bottom access panel was screwed on with one end not engaged. I had to remove panel and reinstall properly. As delivered, it stalls at the 99% complete during the program which creates the USB Recovery Drive. I had to download the patch from the Gateway support web site and install it before I could complete the USB Recovery Drive. This patch should be installed during the REFURB process. I gave 4 stars because of these 2 problems which required my time to correct.

First of all I want to say that people need to be more realistic about what they expect from a budget laptop. You can't expect a Budget Laptop NE56R48U for $300 $400 to have the quality and features of a $800 and above laptop. I bought this laptop in May of 2013 as display model for $288.00 from Best Buy. I couldn't believe the condition of the laptop. It looks brand new. No Damage or wear what's so ever. I say any laptop that can still be working and in condition as a display model must be well built. Believe me I ran it through its paces before I bought it more or less because there is limited software included on it. I picked the laptop up and it didn't feel flimsy. It didn't creek or rattle. It felt solid for an all plastic unit. Now, don't get me wrong. It didn't feel like a $2000.00 laptop. But not bad at all for a budget laptop. The keyboard keys felt fine (I wish the keys lit up). I like the spacing of the keys and especially like the numeric keypad. The picture quality is good. The battery life is good, 4-5 hours. All of the pixels on the screen work; nnlike the Dell 14Z-2100Slv that I bought through QVC. Dell's website states that 3-6 Non functioning pixels is considered industry standard Really? I give you $700.00 and I get what I consider a major flaw. Not to mention the computer wouldn't come up to the windows 8 sign on after completely shutting off. The screen remained on the Dell Logo. I had to go to another website in order to find the fix. I bought a budget Gateway Laptop and every pixel works. And it is the same resolution as the Dell Ultra book; I digress :)

BTW, I compared the Gateway NE56R48U to the Dell 14Z-2100Slv Ultra book for the shear purpose of comparing a budget notebook with a mid level notebook. No, this Ultra book isn't considered top of the line. It is considered Dell's budget line of Ultra books (Inspiron). The Dell has a I3 1.9ghz processor with 6 gigs of ram and 32 gigs of SSD. Semi aluminum case. Suffice it to say that there wasn't that great of a difference between the two units. Get this! I turned both machines off (Not Stand by). I turned them both on at the same time and the Gateway beat the Dell by a couple of seconds in coming up to the windows 8 sign on screen. Dell has a SSD card in it. Surprising that Dell and the other advertisements I read about states that the SSD supposedly makes the PC come up to the sign on screen from booting up much quicker than a PC like Gateway(NE56R48U) that doesn't have it. Consider that the Gateway has a intel B960 2.2 ghz processor and 4 gigs of ram. It held its own despite not having more resources and bells and whistles like the Dell. In all fairness to the Dell 14z with its Intel 3 1.9ghz does do a little better when it comes to a more demanding tasks. But the difference isn't all that spectacular. The price of the Dell is more due to a combination of things like the size (Ultra Book); the name; the processor; the ram and SSD.

I was tempted to choose the Dell Ultra book, but the reviews on Dell's website and my experience with the machine lead me to believe that this isn't worth the money and the headache of keeping the notebook. Shame; Nice and solid build but so not worth it.

This is a good computer. I bought mine for $299. It has good memory and a good processor. It's not the top of the line but for the amount of money is a really good buy. I use it for home use only. Its not a touch screen and there are a few things to get used to such as the sensitivity of the mouse pad. Also, when you go too far to the right with the cursor, it prompts a tool bar. Other than that, I am happy with this computer and I would definitely recommend it to others. Hope this helps!

I received this laptop early today. It came packed to the point that it was a chore to take everything out, which was great since my product had no chance to mess up while in transit. Although I have only received this laptop today, I can already see that I love it.

Pros:

-The sound is truly wonderful. I played youtube songs on my laptop, and no matter how high, or how low I put it, it sounded crisp and clear. The DYNAUDIO works excellent. It makes you feel like you are really in a game, or if watching a movie, just sounds amazing.

-Keyboard. The keyboard is excellent. The keys are nicely spaced apart, making it simple to type. It also comes with a keypad, which is excellent since there are many laptops of this size that don't have one.

-The turbo fan works wonders. I played a game for around an hour, and unlike my old laptop that would get really hot after 20 minutes of playing, this laptop stayed cool throughout the entire hour. Although some people say the fan is loud, I could barely hear it while playing my game, and with headphones on, you won't even know it's on.

-The Cinema Pro is amazing. It makes the colors sharper, more crisp. It really makes the movies, games, pages that you are looking at pop out. It is just absolutely beautiful.

-The software on this game is great, as is the video card. I played L4D2, with all my settings maxed out. The game play was smooth, with not one hitch nor lag nor frame freeze. I loaded almost instantly into each new level, when it would take me a few minutes with my old laptop. The images are much nicer, the resolution amazing.

-The keys are marked with arrows. You can tell it's a gaming laptop by how the red arrows point forward, backward, left, and right. It makes it much easier to find and use the buttons for moving about in the game.

I haven't been able to thoroughly go and look through the entire laptop, so I will update this review once I do.

Cons:

-No instruction manual. Although many of you think no big deal, you will be surprised how difficult it is to navigate this laptop. Although the laptop does come with some papers explaining what the buttons are, they don't really go into detail on everything. So you have to figure it out as you go. And even if you have time to just press every button and see what it does, the same thing can't be said for everyone else. I prefer to start up windows, do the new software updates, and go.

-The mouse pad is iffy. Mine is very touchy. If I touch it lightly, it will sometimes jump around the screen. Other times if I don't press hard enough it won't move. I solved this problem by using my wireless mouse. You can get a $15 wireless mouse and your problem will be solved. It doesn't bother me in the least.

-I am personally having trouble with the text on my laptop. It is very small, and I've looked everywhere and I can't figure out how to change it. The laptop is hard if you are a beginner just for the fact that it has so many things going on in such a small packaged. So if you are really interested in this laptop, I would read up on laptops, and on MSi's just so you have a chance.

Other then these small issues, I absolutely love this laptop. I happily forked over 1500 bucks for this baby. It does everything I was looking for, plus more. The features on this laptop exceeded my every expectation, as it will yours. If you are looking for a laptop with many features that really work, and amazing graphics at a decent price, this is the one for you.

I needed a laptop on which to do video editing. My old machine could not handle the work at all. This machine has all the power needed, and a large enough screen to see what I'm doing. There is so much RAM that my machine generally runs with 6 GB used at all times, but with only 20% of CPU usage. Awesome.

Other reviews said the keyboard was not good. Wrong. The keyboard is very nice, solid and quite.

There are two things that I don't like:

1) The keyboard is not backlit. I would greatly prefer a backlit keyboard.

2) There is no light indicating if the caps light is on.

3) There is no light indicating when the power cord is plugged in.

In summary, it could be better in some small features, but it's got it where it counts.

I needed something more portable as I work 3rd shift security, so thought it would be good to have a laptop with me. This is actually the best laptop I have ever owned. It plays every game that I throw at it with no problems. Plenty of ram, graphics ect ect. When I go home, I hook it up in my room to my 37" Flat tv and watch netflix or crackle movies via HDMI connector. The only thing that got me was it was a little expensive (for me) I know that's not the fault of the seller. I just wish Game laptops were a bit cheaper. I was willing to pay the extra cash so that I could have a decent video card though :) No complaints, Meets and Exceeds Expectations. Thanks MSI.. Will be using you again for all of my laptop needs. This laptop absolutely sucks. Within 2 weeks of buying it / using it, it gave up and threw in the towel.

I fire it up and play for about 5 minutes and get some fuzzy lines and then the display cuts out. Backlight is still on, just a black screen. So I rebootno screen at post. Then I think that maybe I didnt seat the mxm cards correctly/or needed to clean the contacts. Did that and fired it up while it was apart, got post. Turned it off, put it back together, no post. Took it apart again, searched google. I then noticed the the caps light was on, and the num and scroll were flashing. Followed a random response on google and reseated my ram. Post again, and again. Anyway, I'll be playing skyrim and my fans will kick up and fuzzy lines will come up lightly at first then really intense then stop completely. Sometimes when the fans are barely spinning.

As to start out this laptop appears good in numerous ways. For the casual gamer or replacement of older laptops this is a definite yes. Upon receiving and using it here are the first impressions.

Keyboard

This is a typical laptop keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right side. I was used to no numeric keypad on former laptop but it is a nice addition. If you are not used to an extra keypad it will take a little adjustment on getting used to it when typing but no big deal in my book. Some people like illuminated keys on the keyboard but this one is not. I am in no need of illuminated keys so it fits my uses.

Screen

The screen is 15.6 and is HD. To my eyes an HD to a non HD is not a big deal. For people who want the most super clear screen this will probably work. For the causal gamer, college student, or basic video watcher this is great. If you examine the picture the screen is held up by two hinges. These are sturdy but the screen appears to bounce a little bit at times. If you want the screen to remain totally solid with the rest of the computer while moving around it will not. It bounces a little with every movement but if you sit still and it is on your lap then it is not a problem. If it is on a table it doesn't bounce because the surface stays still.

Mousepad

The mousepad is one of the better ones in my opinion. On some samsung i7s the mousepad is nothing but a huge pad with no left or right click separated. This is part of the 5 series and the mouse buttons are separate from the pad itself. For people with bigger hands it may be annoying due to that the pad is closer to the keys but if you are already used to a mousepad close to the keys no big deal. The mousepad is sensitive but takes some time getting used to. If you are one who uses bluetooth mouse then no big deal.

Video Card

This has a Nvidia and integrated intel 4000. You will have to tinker with the settings in Windows 8 and the Nvidia toolbar to set the primary video card. For gamers you will have to set the each game to nvidia card or use global settings. The Nvidia is suitable for casual games up to high graphic games. In the high graphics games the FPS may fall lower at times. For my personal needs as I am a causal gamer it works just fine.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is good and suitable for the average user. It is 750 GB and the speed is fairly good. At times it seems to be a little slow once in a while but then it doesn't really bother me. If you are expecting instantaneous speed then I would say look elsewhere.

Case

The case itself is aluminum in most parts except the bottom which is a type of fiberglass/plastic. If you ever go to a best buy and look at the Samsung series 5 it is exact same body. For the person who likes aluminum case I would suggest a definite yes. For those who prefer all plastic case then a resounding no.

Weight

The weight of the entire laptop is around 5.5 lbs but to me it seems light. It does not feel heavy or bulky. My former laptop was a tad more heavier around the 8 10 lbs range so this feels light especially while sitting on the lap.

Heat of Laptop

When running games it runs warm and not hot for my needs. If you have pants on, have laptop on your lap, the fan kicks once in a while, but it does not feel hot. My former laptop ran much hotter and required a stand with fans. This one so far seems to run in a good warm ranger with higher graphics. The output of air is on the left side and in front.

Speakers

The speakers are made by JBL. The sound is average to good but to me it's just a laptop. Laptops are not designed to be boomboxes with super sound. For the causal gamer it's just fine. For a person who wants super loud sound and wild bass I would suggest look elsewhere. The speakers can get loud but I prefer to keep sound in the minimal to low range.

Main Complaint

It is preloaded with Windows 8 and extra bloatware. Windows 8 takes time to get used to if you are used to vista, xp, and 7. Windows 8 was programmed with touchscreen in mind which is why it functions with all the apps. You can tinker with Windows 8 and download programs to make it look like Windows 7 or Vista which is what I've done. There are Apps already preloaded which can be easily removed.

Overall, I feel this was a good replacement and should work for a casual gamer, college student, business exec, and home laptop. I will update this review as time passes to keep others informed on the usability over time and how long it will hold up.

EDIT 1: After getting the computer all set up, took off bloatware, it seems to run much smoother. The speed of restarts during updates of Windows 8 is very slow. After updates of Windows 8 finished, seemed to pick up speed.

EDIT 2 1 week after purchase: Since receiving the laptop and using it some of the pros and cons are becoming more obvious. When playing games with the mouse pad over and over it takes more time getting used to than previous laptop. If you play FPS with a mousepad you cannot aim, move, and shoot as much. When you use keys to move and try pointing your gun it doesn't work so well. You have to compensate. If you have an external mouse then this is nothing.

The sound from the JBL speakers I must admit was better than my first assessment. The sound on this laptop can get LOUD if you crank up speakers and settings.

The USB 3.0 ports are slightly tight. When plugging in a usb cord or device you have to push it in just right because it is a snug tight fit. Speed for the USB 3.0 is very good. A 4 GB transfer took less than 2 minutes when I was transferring old files from former computer.

Surprisingly older games run just fine on this laptop such as Deus Ex, Civilization III, Half Life 2, etc. The only odd about this is the screen resolution is 1366 x 768. Many older games do not come with this preset resolution.

Overall, still completely satisfied.

EDIT 3: Approaching 1 month since purchase. Upon using this laptop over and over again with games one phenomenon that is common with high graphic games is the heat of the video card and stability. On utilizing higher graphic games it gets quite warm to hot. If it is on your bare skin lap it could burn. If you have something that shields your laptop then no issue. So far when the laptop gets excessively warm to hot it has NOT crashed with the blue screen of death like with my older laptop which ran vista. In my book this makes me quite satisfied.

Another phenomenon with Windows 8 is it has run older games better than vista. Upon purchasing games off of steam such as the old Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade/Fate of Atlantis, LOOM, and Monkey Island which is DOS based it runs just fine. Games purchased off of Good Old Games website such as Nox and Heroes of Might and Magic IV runs just fine also. The only con within the first month is the power cord runs out the side of the computer. For some people it may be nothing but from my experiences with laptops this can potentially be a flaw due to if the cord has to reach an outlet on the opposite side of the computer. This causes the energy port to bend a little. Over a period of time this could cause a loose connection with the constant bending. A former laptop of mine this happened to. When the power port was in the back of the computer on another one of my laptops the cord would not have to bend left or right. This though is a personal preference and can be accommodated by being mindful of the cord and adjusting when needed. Overall, I am still satisfied and getting more surprised at how well this is as a replacement laptop.

EDIT 4: Approaching 2 month mark with this laptop. So far my primary usages for this laptop in the past 2 months has been gaming, writing a dissertation, watching movies, internet, videos, and digital pictures. Still no blue screen of death with higher graphic games. No major negative issues. Speed is still good, graphics still performing at top notch, speakers no issues, mousepad holding up to extreme usage in games, no problems with battery, cover is resistant to scratches (although sweat hand marks and fingerprint marks are evident when tilted at the right angle but this can be cleaned), and USB ports functioning good. Higher graphic games perform well such as Hitman:Absolution, all the GTA games, Portal 1 & 2, and World of Warcraft on High settings (Ultra settings also but it gets hot). Overall, still completely satisfied and happy with this laptop.

Bought this Laptop in June 2006, and I am typing my review with it now.

Search around for best prices I paid $499 during one of Dell Days specials. It was reg. $859. I use this computer for surfing the net, emailing, and video editing.

the only thing I have experienced that is a problem is that my cat chewed on the charger cord, I ordered one off eBay, but dont waste your money... they fit at first but soon wear out FAST. you will see that the plastic ring is a different color and will not fit tight. I ended up splicing the original charger cord together and back in business!

The battery lasts for about 50 mins. but I dont have a need for that as I am always near a outlet.

No overheating at all. Quiet fan

I am an IT person, and have used and tested many and many laptops. My Dell B130 works well as any other Dell I have had on the past (about 4) However, I know its keyboard will fail within 1 year or so. The reason I know is that all my Dell laptops did. I still have an Inspiron 700m which I already replaced its keyboard twice in 3 years. The average is if you use the laptop daily, you will start having problems with your keyboard in about 1 year.

I am not saying that the rest of the computer is bad, but I believe Dell is making a lot of monye just selling keyboards for $25.00

The Toshiba Satellite. My first laptop ever that turned out to be an outstanding choice for me.

I'm a musician, gamer, and occasional artist. I needed something that gave me enough CPU power to mix and master production quality music, but enough portability to do this on the go. Something that could handle realtime mixing of audio and MIDI tracks... orchestral soundscapes, electric guitars, and intricate synth pads. The Toshiba Satellite handles this well, especially with a dual core CPU.

I'm an old school gamer, so I wanted something that was powerful enough to run console emulators, and do it all on the go. N64 and PSX emulators? No problem. The Radeon 3100 built into the laptop, handles 2D and 3D graphics nicely. I got smooth framerates running all my favorite games on this laptop. Windows Aero in Windows 7 is also very smooth and nice on the Toshiba Satellite.

I also enjoy using visual software suites for graphics design. Photoshop, After Effects, GIMP... you name it. I had very few issues using these programs on this laptop. RAM is important here. The Toshiba Satellite has 4GB of RAM. 4GB is great for multitasking and graphics.

Is it the perfect laptop? No. Are there faster and better ones on the market? You bet. Considering the price, this laptop is hard to beat for the quality. So all in all, my experience with the Toshiba Satellite U405d s2874 was great. I'm sure there are others out there who have had great experiences and bad experiences with their laptops, but mine was definitely positive. That's my 2 cents.

**UPDATE**

I've ran across a wi-fi disconnecting/cannot connect problem almost immediately during the first time I used this laptop on battery; HOWEVER There Is a Very Easy Fix to This. Go to control panel and in the top right corner make sure the "View by" is set to small icons then-> click Device Manager-> click on Network Adapters-> click on the "Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter"-> in the upper right hand corner there's a tab "Power Management," click that and UNCHECK the box saying "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Hopefully this will help. I read a couple reviews on a similar model, the Asus N56VZ-ES71 and since its cheaper, more people buy it, and naturally the problem tends to show up more commonly. Don't worry, this is not a hardware flaw/problem nor is it a software bug, its just that the people at the manufacturing plant are too narrow-minded to think ahead, trust me, if you know how to use a mouse and read, this problem can be seen simply as a "setup" process like any other laptop.

I am very glad I found this laptop, I have absolutely no regret getting it (although a little on the expensive side). The overall design is very decent, it has a clean yet stylish look to it. I saw some people were hesitant to get this due to the lack of product specification. So I'll just spill it out right here-

My thoughts:

Built quality is very nice, a very sturdy frame overall

PerformanceI personally think this one of this biggest pros, with a Core-i7 and 8GB of ram, very good for multitasking (which I do a lot), plus great for rendering videos (faster than my desktop lol, but then again my desktop was build in 2010)However with all that said, one thing that really bugs me is the 5400rpm hard drive, it really slows down the boot up time and opening large programs such as vegas pro, and IMO hinders the performance quite a bit. Another complaint I see regarding this laptop is using a GDDR3 version of the GT 650m rather than a GDDR5 model. While GDDR5 does give the card a 10-15% performance, its not that significant, a 10-15% boost in performance means a couple of extra fps in gaming, not that much; I was able to cope with that.

DisplayVery nice display, non glossy, as i stated before really clean, crisp look with the 1080p display.

GamingThis obviously isn't a gaming laptop but I installed Crysis 2 and was able to play it on High settings/1080p without any lag what so ever. If you're looking for a laptop that can handle occasional gaming, this is good choice.

Why I gave it a 4-Star: Mainly due to its 5400rpm HDD, I don't know how to stress this enough, it really drags down the overall performance of the laptop, not to mention, that usb 3.0 is a little useless given that the read/write speeds on the HDD itself is pretty slow. I will most likely go out and buy either a SSD or a better HDD to replace myself (don't get me wrong, the hdd is still ok, but compared to today's standards its kinda slow, don't worry though you can replace the HDD yourself). Other than that, I'm very happy about this purchase.

I previously owned an Asus G73Jw Republic of Gamers laptop, which was phenomenal. But I needed something a bit more professional-looking for client meetings. I mean, who takes a web developer seriously when he shows up with a gaming laptop that looks like a B-1 bomber? Anyway, the new laptop needed to live up to its predecessor in terms of performance, engineering design and appearance (albeit in a more professional way). I also wanted something maybe a tad smaller, but not much. The old G73Jw was a beast, a 17.3" laptop in what seemed like a double-width 20" frame.

Anyway, let's get on with this review.

As always, I go nuts searching the web for reviews when making a new purchase, especially when it is substantial. I was surprised to see what you can get for almost half the price of what I paid for my G73Jw originally. When sorting the products here at Amazon based on user reviews, the N56VZ was right near the top. How great is that? Still not satisfied, however, I continued my search on other sites and read about various laptop models at forums all over the place. Everything kept coming back to the N56VZ. My previous experience with the G73Jw was so awesome, that the name Asus was always atop my list anyway.

I did it. I ordered the N56VZ. I'm an Amazon Prime member, so I got the 2-day free shipping. However, I wanted it NOW, not in 2 days. While waiting anxiously for it's arrival, I performed a full backup on my G73Jw and commenced with the mourning process.

When the N56VZ arrived, I immediately plugged it in, turned it on and listened to the Hallelujah chorus in my head. I knew that the first boot-up would take longer than a normal boot. But I was not prepared for massive amount of time the 5400rpm hard drive would take. Subsequent boots were quite lengthy and a bit appalling. But hey, I knew going in that it shipped with a slow HDD. Fortunately for me, I was planning on removing the 256GB solid state drive from my G73Jw and placing it in the N56VZ, but I wanted to see how the N56VZ performed right out of the gate. And it was painfully obvious that the HDD just had to go. The HDD that is shipped with this machine is ridiculously out of place in the specs, so save yourself some trouble and add an SSD to your cart when you order this lappy. After installing the SSD -WOW -the N56VZ comes to life and in a seriously HUGE way. I removed one star from my rating simply because the 5400rpm HDD is a total joke in this system.

Now that we have the ONE negative aspect eliminated, on with the drooling!

The screen: FANTASTIC. The one thing I hate the most about new laptops are the stupid shiny screens. If you have lots of windows in your home or you use your laptop at cafes and restaurants, you know that glare is a big deal. You may also remember the older laptops that had matte screens but the colors were washed out and dull. But worry no more! Asus has made the awesome of both worlds come together. The viewing angle, color and clarity of this monitor are all top-notch. The G73Jw's screen is quite awesome as well, so I had that for comparison and the N56VZ's matte screen means that it wins this race.

The case: EXCELLENT. Sure, the bottom is plastic but who cares? Aren't most laptop cases entirely made of plastic? In the case of the N56VZ (pun intended), we have upped the ante with aluminum on the backside of the screen and the top side of the main unit. It's beautiful to look at and Asus deserves to be proud of this one. The combination of aluminum and plastic works.

The cooling: AMAZING. Much like the G73Jw, the cooling of this laptop is based on funneling. The N56VZ may only have one "afterburner" as opposed to the G73Jw, but it does a great job of keeping things cool. And just when I thought the G73Jw had the quietest exhaust fan ever, the N56VZ comes along and defies that. I can't even hear it running. At all. The heat is all pushed to the left side, meaning that you can have the laptop on your lap without feeling like you are sitting in a convection oven. Imagine that. Plus it's not really that hot anyway and the keyboard/pad surface always has that nice cool, aluminum feel to it.

The graphics card: INCREDIBLE. I'm not a big gamer, but I do appreciate quick response times from Photoshop and other graphics-intense design software. At the advice of someone on a forum somewhere who posted a crazy-long review about the N56VZ, I installed the driver directly from nVidia to replace the one supplied by Asus. Probably not necessary as I didn't notice anything different, but I do now have the latest driver. Also, I use the HDMI and VGA connectors simultaneously to fuel two LG Flatron E2360 23" monitors without issue.

The sound: WOW. Ok, so it's not like listening to your $5,000 home theater system, but it does give all other laptops a run for their money. With or without the included external subwoofer, the sound is great for a laptop. Also, the subwoofer does improve the sound far more than I expected it to. My daughter and I were laughing as I unwrapped it from the box. "HAHAHA yeah right, it's just gimmick!" But then you could hear "THUMP" in stereo as our chins hit the floor when I plugged it in during Boston's More Than A Feeling.

The ports: COOLNESS. All of the USB ports are version 3.0, which is backward-compatible with USB 2.0. Don't pay attention to Amazon's specs for this laptop, it does indeed have 4 USB 3.0 ports. Also, after watching a few video reviews of the N56VZ, I was pretty convinced that it did not have a card reader installed. Not one of the reviews even mentioned it, as if they didn't know it existed. Well, I'm here to tell you that it does indeed exist but is cleverly disguised in the front of the main unit on the left side. The sloping underside of the case makes it hard to see and it looks like it's just a grip for the access cover on the bottom.

The wireless: GREAT. Both the wifi and Bluetooth are very capable and strong. I use a Bluetooth mouse and it connects without any trouble. One tiny irritation: every time I boot up, I get a notification that says the Bluetooth is not discoverable. Duh! It's set that way by default and is an appropriate default setting, but the driver (I'm assuming) finds it necessary to nag me about it.

The performance: UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE. I don't use the stock Asus Instant-On feature because -well -why? With the SSD installed, there's no time for silly animated logos. It zooms right by the Windows 7 boot animation, barely allowing me to see the little colored balls swirl around for a split second. I'm literally taken to the login screen in about 8 seconds. As for overall performance, this thing gets the job done. As wonderful as my G73Jw is/was, the N56VZ makes it look like child's play. The amazing combination of processor, graphics card and 8GB of RAM makes the N56VZ a joy to use. Just remember, there is a bottleneck unless you swap the stupid stock HDD with an SSD (I suppose a 7200rpm HDD or hybrid SSD/HDD might help significantly as well).

The summary: WORDS ESCAPE ME. Either I'm easily satisfied or this lappy really is awesome (once again, except for the stupid stock HDD).

Planned modifications/purchases: I have already ordered a Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive (Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ST95005620AS) and a SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 12.7mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM (NEW SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 12.7mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM) so I can have a data drive for my project files and other data. I'm going to make use of the removed optical drive in the USB 2.0 Slim DVD/CD-RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connector (USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For all Laptop Notebook dvd cd burner[ Case only!! Drive is not included !!]) and I purchased a Case Logic VNA-216 16-Inch Laptop Attache (Case Logic VNA-216 16-Inch Laptop Attache (Black)).

I just got this speed monster yesterday via Amazon from J&Rs. What can I say about the speed...it's fast...VERY fast. Anybody wavering on the edge over to go i7 3rd gen over a 2nd gen I say just do it. The extra $$$ is well spent IMO. I see somebody else has just added a full list of specs which until now was not listed on here. The ES model doesn't have a Blu-Ray ROM and I think comes with only 4Gb DDR3-1333 RAM and 1366x768 res screen but is available for about $200 less. So if you're on a tight budget that might be a better choice. But do yourself a favor and get to see the beautiful 1920x1080 screen on this one beforehand. It is really that nice and I believe it's an IPS screen. No dark patches and a wide viewing angle.

As with the previous reviewer the Hitachi 5400rpm HDD supplied is completely out of place in this system. After verifying everything worked I swapped it out with my 2yr old Intel 80GB X-25M SSD. WOW now it becomes a totally different animal. Running Cinebench 11.5 the results are CPU test 6.25 and GPU 3D animation test was 43.03fps! That outperforms an earlier i7 960 chip running at 3.2Ghz. Cinebench claims 2.3Ghz for this (though maybe faster with Turbo Boost running). Boot time is now about 21 seconds from cold boot to Win 7 desktop screen.

While I don't do much gaming, this notebook can perform as one. Mostly it will be used for everyday web browsing, email etc. and photo/HD video editing. It handles my Sony a77 24MP images like they were 15yr old 500k GIFs LOL Instant. No waiting. Photoshop v7.0 opens up the fastest I've ever seen. I haven't yet installed Sony Vegas Pro 8 but I expect it to be quick too. A word on the graphics performance. The 3rd gen i7 Ivy bridge series now has an on-die Intel video chip included. So there are 2 graphics chips, this one and the 2Gb nVidia 650M. The Intel is used for run-of-the-mill performance applications and the 650M kicks in when needed. This is supposed to save battery power. Having not run any tests yet on that I can't comment. The battery is a 6 cell 5200mAh one.

One bad thing is the manual Asus supplied on the utilities CD/DVD. Nowhere does it mention the command to access the BIOS on cold boot. After some trial and error, I found it's the delete key. Why that isn't mentioned I don't know? Every other computer I've had over the years does (and I've had quite a few). One more thing to mention. On the supplied Win 7 HP install, you have to run the utility disk to get the Blu-Ray drive to read anything. Why that wasn't done as part of the factory install again I don't know? Despite the physical size which is typical for a 15.6", the weight is only 6lbs making it quite easy to carry. Most of the "gamer" spec notebooks seem to be heavier. The supplied subwoofer is a nice touch as it adds a bit extra bass end for the sound. Not quite Hi-Fi quality but better than the more usual tinny notebook sound.

If you have a spare $1200 lying around and are looking for a decent notebook or like me, a desktop replacement (be gone 4yr old Q6700 tower!) which won't break the bank yet reward with high performance, I'd say look no further. I did also consider an MSI GE60 at first but those are in limited supply it seems and marginally more expensive. 4 stars given, knocking one off for the lousy 5400rpm HDD.

I am an experienced pc user. I was looking for a sleek, stylish, and most importantly powerful laptop to replace my previous laptop (a massive and obnoxiously heavy 17.3in gateway FX gaming laptop).

THe exterior is a work of art. The sleek lines, and very solid aluminum exterior leave nothing to want for.

The performance is very good. I wiped the computer right off the bat, and replaced the hard drive with a Crucial M4 solid state drive and I get 12 second boots consistently. Thats 12 second boots, not waking from stand-by.

The built in "instant-on" feature actually works as advertised. I am usually very wary of such voodoo from manufacturers trying to boost sales, but for the short time I had the stock hard drive in, it would truly wake up in 2 seconds. Plus, the other feature that comes with that software can give you absurd standby battery life. It claims right now that I can leave it in standby for 120 days before it runs out of battery. I have yet to test this, but considering they did not lie with 2 second wake-up, I believe it.

Speaking of manufacturer voodoo, I was expecting the supersonic soundmaster extreme or whatever they are calling it to be pointless, but the mini subwoofer actually helps a ton! These are the best laptop speakers I have seen, or heard rather, ever. They are still laptop speakers though, and I will still use a good set of external speakers, or headphones, when I'm listening to music.

The graphics performance is good. I can run Shift 2 Unleashed at all max fluidly. I haven't tried skyrim but I expect it to be pretty good. The screen is beautiful, one of the best I have ever seen in a 15in laptop. The keyboard has good feel, and the backlight is good (Not great, there is some bleeding around the keys and I have seen better).

The portability is what you would expect from a 15in laptop. It isn't exceptionally light, but is certainly portable.

My one complaint is that the size of the screws used on some of the components is ridiculously small, but unless you plan on serious upgrading or modding then this shouldn't affect you.

I am very very happy with this PC, and I would recommend it to anyone (and with the ssd it blows anything else out of the water). If you are considering a mac, stop, and buy this. It has all the aesthetics, is cheaper, and equally/more powerful.

I, as most of us and likely you, spent many weeks researching for dozens of hours about the perfect laptop for me. If I'm going to spend over a grand on something, its worth looking into and reading reviews like this right? So I'll get right into it.

Note: I've been using this laptop for about 2 months, extensively every day

-Overall Build Quality-

This is an Asus, so it has amazing build quality. The keyboard feels 95% perfect (more on that later), very sturdy with little to no sound when typing which I love. I'm typing this during a lecture actually, and no one can really tell...haha. The hinges for the screen are two big clearly metal pieces so very durable. The screen never feels loose at all. The backing of the screen and the screen itself has little flex and does not feel like a cheap plastic thing it feels like a $1000+ computer screen, as it should.

The touchpad and handrest area are aluminum and very sturdy. Despite the little holes for the speakers I don't see how you could get dirt in there unless you eat cheetos while typing. So don't do that. Eat cheetos with your feet like a real man.

I must say, however, that the USB ports are stiff as hell. I have to pull pretty damn hard to get various USB cables to come out iPod, hard drives, whatever. I guess that it being stable and such is good as you'll NEVER have a USB device accidentally fall out, but I feel like after several years I might damage the port by pulling. Devices never just slide out they jerk out, which is never good.

It comes with a Blu-Ray disc drive and it works perfectly. I, as most people, rarely use the disc drive, so it hasn't been tested a bunch, but burns just swell. However, the drive itself pokes out about 3mm from the right side of the laptop so it looks a bit unperfect. Too bad.

-Touchpad/Keyboard-

As said above the keyboard is very quiet and easy to use. I never see the point of number pads and wish that companies didn't see them as a good thing for 15.6" laptops, as it shrinks the arrow keys and right shift of this keyboard. It also shifts all the keys and touchpad to the left (check the pics above) which is a bit awkward, but even with my huge hands it doesn't affect typing. I do something (or did rather, kinda stopped now) sometimes type like this when capitalizing. The WOrld TRade ORganization, in other words I would hold the left shift down a bit more than usual. I seem to not do it anymore though, so I guess you stop after a while. The backlight of the keyboard is perfect as far as I can tell.

The touchpad, as ALL touchpads, doesn't beat Apple Macbook touchpads, but it has multi-touch features and is easy enough to use. The right/left clicking borders are a bit ambiguous as there are no physical clicking buttons, but I use a mouse whenever at home, and the few times I use my laptop out of my pad it isn't a big deal to get used to.

There is also a programmable button on the top left of the laptop under the left hinge that I programmed to turn the touchpad off/on, which works perfect for when you're using a mouse or typing a lot.

-Ports-

As I mentioned above, the USB ports are stiff. Probably the WORST THING ABOUT THIS LAPTOP is the port placement. By far the dumbest placement ever, without putting ports under the spacebar. All of the ports save power and the mini-sub are on the front 1/3 of the device, which makes using a mouse slightly annoying. When you plug in stuff on the right side cables can get in the way. Using a USB stick and a right-handed mouse seems like it should involve your arm being 6 inches away from the right side of the laptop while using it. I'm a tall, large guy with big hands so it's easy to get around, but for short-armed folks, be warned! Look at the port pics before buying!

There is no eSata too, which sucks, but there is an HDMI. Yet again, the HDMI is near the front (on the left) which is dumb...should be on back like the Clevo/Sagers!

-Screen-

The screen on this baby is huge and absolutely gorgeous. The matte is a better decision over glossy if you use it outdoors, and even indoors, looks brilliant. Playing HD movies and HD games looks much better than any screen I've ever used. 1920 x 1080 is such a great resolution, even 24 year old me will increase the size of text on many webpages for easier viewing.

-Processor/RAM/Video Card Performance-

The only new game I've played is Guild Wars 2, which I have played a lot of! It is one of the most graphic intensive games out right now (especially graphics card), but I turn all of the extras on and all settings on high except draw distance. There are ultra settings for a few things, but everything at my settings gets me 15-35 fps, 15 for 100~ people in huge online battles or boss battles, but everyone's computer will chug during these events. Sometimes it will go as low as 8 fps but I expect that when things go crazy flashy. I am using the newest beta drivers made for GW2 and they helped a lot.

I haven't had a single crash on this unit yet, period, nor blue screen. So that's good.

The single large fan port on the left WILL shoot out steaming hot air, so if you're left handed and a gamer, gooooood luck. I've left glasses on water and my phone on the left while playing GW2 and when I touch them I almost get burned. I REALLY wish every laptop maker put the ports in the back like Sager, but as a right-handed person, this doesn't affect me so much. Just be careful.

When doing normal stuff, it just shoots out room temp to slightly warm air.

-Storage-

I replaced the HDD with a 120GB SSD before I even turned it on for the first time. It was very easy to do so, but the bottom plate covering the RAM and HDD kit was a tiny bit difficult to snap out, but once I got the hang of it, it was simple. The 750GB 5200RPM 2.5in drive is sitting in an enclosure kit and works swell, and my SSD ensures my laptop is DEAD silent. I play Guild Wars 2 on it and even with such a powerful game (running at 85% max settings, mind you), all you hear is a tiny hum of the fan. I'm guessing having the original HDD would make it louder, however it sitting in an enclosure kit still makes no noise. It does get a tiny bit warm, while my SSD does not! I recommend making the upgrade I did.

As expected, files on my SSD open like lightning and my computer boots quite fast, less than 15 seconds.

However, when I wake my computer up from hibernation it takes as long to do this as it does to boot up, maybe LONGER, which sucks. Also, when I boot up sometimes my computer auto-boots into my CD and sometimes my SSD, regardless of going into my BIOS and changing/saving boot priority. I'm sure I can change this with a bio update or something, but I just don't care enough at the moment.

-Battery Life/Portability-

This thing's battery life surprised the hell out of me. At about half brightness doing web stuff and no gaming, I get a bit less than 5 hours of battery life. When gaming and max brightness, between 2 and 3. If I lower brightness to the lowest setting I can squeeze out close to 6 hours I think, which for this size of computer and its power, is amazing! I had a MBP before this and purchased a brand new battery only to squeeze out less than 3 hours on a 15" model. Pathetic!

It is a very large laptop but isn't as heavy as you'd expect. Since the build quality is good you don't have to worry much about it breaking. Also the battery doesn't jut out at all which is good.

-Sound/Speakers-

As I'm sure you know, this laptop comes with surround sound speakers and a mini-sub to plug in and when using this, it sounds a LOT less tinny, but the sound is coming still from the center of the laptop, so it doesn't sound as good as almost any pair of speakers over $40. If you're a person who travels a lot and wants to watch movies/music for a group of people, this will be super awesome for you!

-Warranty/Support-

I haven't used the support system, but Asus laptops come with a 2 year warranty with 1 year of accidental damage/spilling protection. This is unheard of in the laptop market and one of the several reasons I love Asus!

First off, "OnedealOutlet" is very fast at shipping their products.

The Asus N750JV-QB72, The computer is beautiful. The love affair died down within a week of putting up with Windows 8. It is like two operating systems on top of each other. It had to go. I decided to put Linux in the system. The UEFI rom is programmed to authenticate Microsoft, so be careful if you try doing the same thing. You can mess up your bios and render it worthless. Turn off secure boot. The computer is quick. Do not expect wonders from these speakers. My $500 Toshiba with harman/Kardon speakers sound much better than this Asus. The little bass speaker does not perform as one would expect. Play with the adjustments to get your best sound. You will be better off purchasing a nice pair of Logitech computer speakers. The video is crystal clear!!!

great for watching movies or viewing pictures. I have not used the Blueray, no comment on that.

Taking windows 8 off this beautiful machine:

Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon: Installed without problems. Everything works on this except VLC video player and Skype. Once Mint updates their Kernel, this will be the best operating system for this computer in my opinion. I have yet to get bluetooth to work properly in Linux. As more kernels are developed, it might be a year before I can get this to work properly.

Ubuntu 13.10 beta Everything worked to include VLC and Skype. Problem with this, Gnome 3 is much easier to control than the Unity desktop. The problem with this operating system is the fact this is not due out until October. It crashed a lot (Expected). The touch pad was way to sensitive. Changing the sensitivity settings proved to be difficult.

I also tried Fedora and Debian...I don't have the time right now to configure everything. In the future, I will probably check these out in further detail.

Cheap Lenovo IdeaPad Y410P Laptop - 59369916 - Dusk Black

I just bought this laptop having done a ton of research on it first. I'll say this much, if your not tech savvy then this laptop is not for you. Read on for more info, but I'm an IT guy so I can get kinda technical at times (sorry!).

I picked this laptop up directly from Levono's website for $849 (was $919 with tax); It came with a 24gb SSD (M.2 drive not a mSSD), 1TB HDD, Haswell 2.4ghz Quad Core processor, 8gb of ram (upgradable to 16gb) and a Geforce GT750m dedicated graphics card. Mainly wanted this beast for running Virtual Machines and it does that very, very well not without some issues though (but I can't complain for the price, looked at other laptops and all were well above the $1000 mark which was beyond my work budget). I didn't have the heating issues or issues with the speed as one of the other reviews gave, but in the end I wound up getting rid of Windows 8 which I think helped a lot (I wound up installing Windows 7 and all my apps on the m.2 SSD and left the 1TB for my data and profile.

So having said all that, in the past 5 days I've owned this the issues I've run into were; wifi dropped connections every 30 45 minutes (I'm right next to the wifi access point both at home and at work so distances nor wifi ap should have been a problem). The built in trackpad acts funky, but every ELan trackpad I've dealt with so far has (I just use an external mouse every chance I get). Running 2 3 Virtual Machines at once does get this thing a little warm but as long as I don't block the vent ports it's fine, I'd rather it be blowing hot air than the air get trapped up inside. So far I've found fixes / ways to deal with all the problems I've encountered but I am knocking off 1 star because of these issues (if I couldn't find a fix for them I would have dropped my rating lower).

For the wifi issues, you need to update the driver the card uses to the latest and greatest and possibly even install windows 7 rather than 8 (the drivers are the problem not the card or the laptop itself) I installed windows 7 after a long driver hunting party and haven't had a problem since.

For the touchpad issues, if your not used to a macbook the touchpad will definitely be a new experience for you. The touchpad on this laptop could be compared to a jacked up version of the one found on a Macbook (if you get the Elan version it's really frustrating to use). This laptop comes with two variants of touchpad, one is produced by Elan the other is a Synaptics based touchpad (hope and pray you get the Synaptics, I was unfortunate and got the ELan). There's not much you can do with the touchpad, you can disable tapping which will help a little, I have mine setup so that it's push to left click, tap or push with two fingers to right click and scroll with two fingers.

The battery life has been a little disappointing, but it's a 2.4ghz quad core gaming laptop what did I expect?? I was able to get almost 3 hours of battery out of this thing with everything but the wifi turned off (screen turned down to about 25% brightness, Nvidia card turned off, power settings turned to battery saver in windows.

Really for the price of this laptop, if you overlook the issues you can't beat it. Just upgrade to Windows 7 or install some form of linux on it (I'll be experimenting with that one next)...

The laptop itself has a couple problems... the wifi blinks in and out occasionally and the touchpad is awful (two finger scrolling seems poorly implemented, and I hate the single-piece trackpad that includes the left and right click buttons). However, the one star review is more for the customer service.

They shipped my laptop to me with an australian AC adapter. It doesn't fit into US outlets (unless you have a funky old-school outlet for a large appliance like a washer/dryer). I called them up and they sent me a corrected one right away. Except that the new AC adapter did not fit my laptop.

My next five attempts to reach out to Lenovo were hilarious:

1) Post sales team: you need to talk to the technical support team, here's their number.

2) Technical support team: this is the wrong technical support team, let me transfer you to the right technical support team.

3) Technical support team 2: this is a post-sales team problem. You need to talk to them. They sent you here? Let me put you on hold for half an hour and then try to convince you that Lenovo doesn't sell ANY laptops that can plug directly into US walls you need to go out and buy an international adapter!

4) Web sales chat: we can't help you, but we will make a note of this and someone from the post-sales team will reach out within 48 hours (did not get a response).

5) Post sales team (immediately escalated to a team lead this time): we're not sure which AC adapter goes with this laptop, let me call you back within 48 hours (did not get a response).

Finally, I got a response out of the websales at lenovo e-mail, where they told me that I could go buy an AC adapter and get reimbursed. That's great, but they didn't tell me which AC adapter I need, or where I could buy it. Then they offered to send it to me. At this point, I'm 20 days into the 30 day return period, so I figured I wouldn't chance it.

I'm returning the laptop today, and I reaaaaally hope the return process is smoother than my interactions with Lenovo so far. I know that every large company has some bad call center agents, but what I experienced was full-on ridiculous. I tried literally every avenue of contacting Lenovo that I could, and still could not get the issue resolved in a reasonable timeframe. Lenovo needs to get it together.

I had real trouble working with customer support to get the wifi working right. so i was mad mad mad. BUT after that, this little fellow has been fast and flawless. the hd plus screen is very fine in this 14 inch size. it plays new games like battlefield 3, and others, perfectly. it boots up fast. I have the one with the 1 tb hard drive plus the 24 gig ssd. I haven't notced the heat generated or 'sharp edges' or the trackpad to be problem areas, like another reviewer here did. the computer chassis/body feels pretty solid, but it isn't made from a machined aluminum billet and does not reach that level of perceived solidity. good enough, though. best computer specification for the price right now. not even close. I shopped before buying.

I wanted to try some mid-level gaming and that is why I chose the Y410p. Considering the specs and the features you get for the price, this machine is in a class all by itself. Similar builds at HP and Dell can easily run for $200-$300 more. I actually had to send my first model back and this is why: When i got my first model, the first thing I did was downgrade to Windows 7 because i had read bad things about Windows 8 and didn't like the new interface. Windows 7 actually ran pretty great but there were a few bugs and some problems with the drivers. I could tell that this machine was built to run with Windows 8. I contacted Lenovo Support, who were very helpful. I told them that my laptop wasn't working properly and I wanted a new one. They sent out a new one the next business day and I was able to keep using the one I had until the new one arrived. With the new model, I stuck with Windows 8 and it's been pretty good. I found a way to disable the new UI and stick with the classic Desktop mode.

This laptop actually does a great job with gaming, I play Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor on high settings and you can max out the settings on most games. Backlit keyboard is very nice as well. The only complaints i have deal with the keyboard and touchpad. Simply put, the touchpad is terrible. It is designed like the apple macbook touchpad but is not anywhere near as responsive or effective. It's just something u have to get used to. Also, some of the keyboard keys such as Enter, Backspace and Shift are smaller than standard size and this also takes getting used to. I've had this laptop for 3 weeks and still mess up sometimes.

Overall its a really good laptop but it has some minor design flaws.

UPDATE:

OK, so it's been about 2 months now since I've had the laptop and I'm sticking with what I said. Besides the minor annoyances of the touchpad and keyboard, everything is great. Another thing i forgot to mention that the laptop is great cooling wise. I always have my laptop sitting on a fan but I don't even turn the fan on anymore, the laptop does a great job of keeping cool. Only when I'm gaming do I even notice any hot air and even then, the built in fan in the laptop pushes it all out from the left side of the laptop.

When I first purchased this laptop I was overwhelmed at the powerful graphics card and processor (I often play games on it). This is where the pro's end. Every, single, piece of this product is lacking in quality: plastic creaks (alot), screen is awful, battery lasts 3 hours maybe, the touchpad is the single worst I have ever had to use, and most importantly; this product contains fraudulent advertising. The so called ultrabay (expansion bay) has not one released attachment. Not the promised extra graphics card, not the extra battery (they lied about the 5 hour life, you really will need another battery), nothing. How they have not faced a law suit is beyond me, these accessories are literally printed on the box and hundreds have complained. DO NOT BUY

I purchased this laptop for development in college while getting my CS degree, and so far I have been nothing but impressed. The power management software is very useful for creating profiles, the fans are next to inaudible, it's very quick and I rarely need to reboot. Awaking from hibernation/standby is faster than any other laptop I've used.

This laptop's keyboard is one of it's stand out features, and is honestly the best keyboard I've ever used on a laptop, period. The keys are strong and firm, and you don't have to worry about feeling like you're going to break them by typing too hard. The BIOS option to switch Fn and Ctrl was also very helpful.

For any Linux users I have 11.04 ubuntu installed in a dual boot configuration, and from what I can tell everything so far has been working out of box.

So far there are really only two downsides to this laptop that I've noticed so far, and they are both very minor. The physical switch that enables/disables the wifi radio on the right side of the unit is very difficult to toggle. It's recessed into its little whole just slightly too much, and at least with mine, is so stiff that I feel like I'm going to break it when switching off and on. The keyboard function of toggling the radio works just fine, so I don't really use the physically switch.

Secondly, the screen tends to get marked up by the keys when it is closed and transported in a carrying bag or backpack. You can usually notice a small little circle imprint on the display from the tracking circle on the keyboard. Again, these are very small complaints and overall have been incredibly satisfied.

While I needed something mobile to carry for school, I also needed a workhorse, because I'm using it for my research and dissertation. It's light enough (although a little heavier than I'd hoped) and I love the feel of the keyboard (important because I will be typing several thousand pages by the time I finish). The touch-pad isn't slick and shiny like most touch-pads so it's easier to use (and I hope it won't wear out like my other touch-pads have which makes them virtually impossible to use). Love love love the light for the keyboard! The higher screen resolution is brilliant. I've been on the receiving end of the video camera and the video is crystal clear. This is also important because we live across the ocean from my family who want to see my kids as often as possible. All-in-all an excellent purchase so far (about a month post purchase).

The ThinkPad T420 4177-QKU is a great Notebook PC, I actually have only had it for less than 24 hours but I have to say it is one of the best laptops I have owned. It is the first Lenovo I have owned but the ThinkPad class of laptops has always been my "dream computer".

Now on to the Computer:

The computer seems powerful, I have not even installed Microsoft Office on it yet, but I will soon.

A lot of people claim the screen is extremely blurry or grainy, but it is just the matte anti-glare coating. I have to say it is noticeable but is not nearly as bad as my HP TouchSmart Tablet. I have yet to try the computer outdoors because it is cold here but I will update if I do. However, the matte coating is great if you have to work under those awful florescent lights.

This computer was bought for school purposes (History Major) so no games or hard core graphics, so I think the i5 processor is good enough. I do plan on buying 4gb of ram just for the heck of it.

Over all this is a great computer for work or school. Windows 7 is a great OS, and I would recommend this to any college student.
