Let me start off by saying that this is a very fast computer. I7 makes it a blaze and with 4 gigs of ram it holds its on on any advanced program or game. The videocard in it is more than enough to run Modern Warfare 2 at some high settings and it'll run most things without a hitch. It is relatively slim as a desktop replacement laptop. I categorize it as a desktop replacement for a few reasons I'll explain later on. Now, other things that it does well size and weight are great for all of the power that you get. The build is pretty solid, although I could go for a studier base.. it'll give you a little flex if you pick it up from the corner.

Now the cons:

The battery life is very short, but what can you expect while running a quad core and a dedicated graphics card.

Mobility wise you can pack it up and bring it around with you but with very little juice and time on the go you better bring along a power cord. Also, the size makes it so that it'll fit into a backpack but you are going to feel this thing when you are taking it around with you. I came from a 13'' macbook pro that I thought was fantastic for mobility and for battery life but it lacked on the speed realm.

The screen.. come on, this should be at least a 1680x1080 screen. There's no reason for it to be 13XX by 7XX. The screen itself is decent, it's nothing terrible but it is not on par with MBP's screens.

The track pad is a little too grippy for my tastes, and you'll have to drag your finger around with some force to get it going.

The track pad placement is not the best, as I hit it constantly with the bottom of my palm while I am typing on the keyboard. It could be / should be placed a little differently... I didn't have much trouble typing with the MPB again but with this I am getting my cursor pushed around and put into the middle of my sentences causing me to go back and fix them.

Now for the ugly:

This computer Blue screen of deathed on a regular basis and hard locked when doing too much video and audio at the same time. I looked into this is great detail on Lenovo's forums and I have fixed it somewhat. I got rid of the original bloatware installation of Windows 7 and found a regular version to install. After that I updated all of the drivers as best I could, and then I updated the BIOS as well. I sometimes still get some hard locks, although very rarely now. Also, I get the "BIG POINTER" problem that sometimes shows up for other users of this particular laptop. So with that said I had some serious functionality problems getting this laptop to run correctly for me. I had ubuntu on it for a time and it ran without a hitch, but why are we going to be putting ubuntu on a $1000 semi gaming computer? Doesn't add up for me at least.

Would I recommend it?

I think its a great computer when it works. I think if you know what you are getting into you are going to get a deal. I think that if it worked constantly I wouldn't have a reason not to recommend it. If I didn't have the functionality issues with it I'd tell people that the screen is a little weak but it's a hell of a deal with all that horsepower in it. Think of it as a dragster that has weak brakes.. super fast, but not the most functional for day to day driving.

I would not recommend it only because I would have gone with a ThinkPad not an "Ideapad" This is obviously a cheaper and less reliable solution to a ThinkPad and it is more geared towards your gamer crowd than your business crowd. If I could do it again I would go ThinkPad without a second thought. Who needs I7 in a computer that's only going to run an hour hour and a half without a power cable? Get this computer as a desktop replacement that's more affordable and smaller than a $2000 alienware.

If you want mobility and more functionality, go with a ThinkPad or equivalent.

Laptop worked fine for about 11 months. It then started crashing with Blue Screen very frequently. Sent it to Lenovo Support, they pretty much replaced every thing but the screen and keyboard. After a couple of months Laptop fails to start intermittently Display Driver failed to initialize. Spoke with Lenovo support team and I will have to send it back to Lenovo support team.

Issue with Lenovo Support -

Purchased 1 year extended warranty from Lenovo Support on Dec 2011.

I still did not receive the Purchase and warranty Information.

I have been calling Lenovo Support for almost 2 months to get this information.

Every time I call them, they say that they will send it in 24-48 hours and I still did not receive any information. This has been going on for almost 2 months.

I am now stuck with a Laptop which does not work and Extended Warranty which I cannot use.

I would neither recommend this product nor the extended warranty service from Lenovo

This laptop has been sent to the Repair Depot 3 times for "Faulty Motherboards" and each time the interval has grown shorter until upon the third time, the laptop CAME BACK with a cracked side near the power jack. When the computer's harddrive finally gave out, I sent it back and the Lenovo repair team let me know that they could not fix it because it was apparent due to the crack in the side that there was user inflicted damage.

A simple google search will let you know that there are known common hardware issues with this laptop. Works well until it doesn't. Lenovo customer service is unresponsive and have no qualms about asking you to pay for known hardware issues that are not your fault. Also, they will sit on your laptop without any available information for up to 3 weeks without returning your laptop.

Bottom line: you don't want to buy a product that has to go back twice for hardware-related repairs within the first 10 months, especially if they are not use-related.

If customer service was more responsive and known hardware issues were fixed as part of a recall, this really would have been a great machine.

I have owned this laptop for well over a year now and I haven't had the best experience with it, but it has been functional enough for continued use.

We'll start with the good.

PROS:

The speakers on this computer are impressive, really. Being sort of an audiophile and highly critical of most laptop speakers, the JBLs in this model do a fine job and then some. They are relatively loud, very clear, and the intelligent touch-settings allow you to transition smoothly from configuration to configuration for movies, games and music. Additionally, the video output is fairly good which makes this a decent machine overall for entertainment.

The keyboard and touchpad are apt and comfortable. When I was shopping around I found myself in search of something that wasn't going to make me tired of using it after 30 minutes. Trackpads can make me crazy, and this one fit my needs well. Zoom and scrolling work quite well and the keyboard makes it so that you don't have to attack each letter or symbol.

Aesthetic design and portability have been nice. The lid has some neat, platonic graphic work on it and the orange rim around it is a nice touch. It's pretty slim and the edges taper off nicely for comfortable portability.

Now for why I am not very happy...

It is unfortunate that the above aspects are so nice, because the valuable facets of operation on this machine are lacking.

CONS:

We'll start with the biggest physical issue. The screen is floppy. That's right; floppy. When I open the lid it will move back and forth about an inch removed from its true position. It's not entirely unusable as I've found ways to compromise since I am still using it, but it's seriously a nuisance. You will also find yourself mad at how badly this thing smudges. Be prepared to wipe it down with a micro-fiber cloth daily. Over time the lid's contact with the rest of the computer when closed will also incur scratches on the screen and the casing that are irremovable and annoying if you like your computer to look nice. The rubber pads to keep this from happening don't really work and eventually fall out.

Operation is pretty unfortunate. The sound card goes in an out, as if it's picky about what it likes to play. Sometimes I have to close programs that use sound and reopen them for it to recognize the output. Strange, but pretty much a problem since the first month that I've had it. This machine also gets pretty damn hot. Sometimes it's almost unbearable to have it on your lap and I hardly do things to truly stress the system, unless you count iTunes, Office, Skype and a web browser. Don't bother with much gaming as it will lag and struggles often with loading and rendering of graphics. Don't even think about running video editing programs that are heavy on resources like Vegas as your projects will crash. Additionally, be prepared to encounter BSODs. Finally, a huge problem is that startup is SLOOOOWWWW. This can be resolved by removing bloatware, but only to an extent. You should probably configure this thing yourself with a fresh install of Windows if you want optimal startup in addition to fixing a number of other problems.

Battery life is terrible. When I use the computer in classes that are an hour and fifteen minutes, I am prepared for it to be nearly dead by the end. Additionally, the battery will sometimes cut out of recognition and your system will require a restart and battery removal to solve the problem.

I have had other problems with the computer that would require more detailed description, but here's the final staggering gunshot to the foot for this product. I had to order twice before I received a functioning model, and still all of the problems above have existed with this one. The first one that I ordered had a screen problem, something I suspect to be due to a problem with the assembly. If you don't want to deal with some hassle, don't trust this model.

OVERALL: This problems with this machine are numerous, and there are some great features, as well. Unfortunately, the bad overwhelms the good and I will never purchase from Lenovo again. It's sad to say, considering the great number of positive things I heard about the company, but this experience has ruined their reputation, for me. Perhaps there are some other very dependable models that they have made, but I wouldn't count on this one ever again.

Review of ASUS B43S-XH51 (14.1-Inch Screen) Laptop

I had been looking for a medium priced laptop that also had lots of features. Being patient, I knew eventually I would find what I wanted for the right price. I located this Asus B43S-XH51 laptop on Amazon by accident. I was looking through the ASUS website and saw this Business laptop that was made extremely well and offered everything I wanted and more. The price was a really good deal. Then I noticed their website mentioned Amazon was one of the retailers offering this laptop, so I clicked on it.

I like ASUS products because I have owned several of their products, including two Netbooks that have served me very well. This system came equipped with

a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5-2520M, 4 GB DIMM (I also purchased 8gb upgrade separately) 500 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive (I wanted a 256gb SSD, but couldn't beat this price), a 14.1-Inch Screen (which is the perfect size for traveling) and Windows 7 Professional (which I have on my Home PC and my wife's Laptop, so I am completely familiar and happy with Win 7 Pro. This system fit my need perfectly.

Once I received it, I fell in love with this laptop. Its very attractive, super well designed and constructed and operates flawlessly. The screen has several adjustments and is very clear and bright. Battery life is typical for a laptop, about 2.5 3 hours with continuous use. I thought I would look for a bigger battery, but when using this in my travels, I seldom use it where there is no outlets and when I do, I have never totally exhausted the battery. Its not the lightest laptop out there, but I prefer heavy constructed aluminum case and the very durable overall construction of this laptop over saving weight. What's an extra pound anyway, its not like you're going jogging while carrying it anyway.

I give this laptop 5-stars and with my history using ASUS products, I fully expect trouble free years of use from it also. And I want to add that the battery comes with a full 3-year warranty.

Bought for my wife's telework this because I have had great reliability and performance with ASUS products before--router, netbook, desktop mother boards, etc. We bought the business laptop because we thought it would be more reliable and rugged. We have had to send to California ($20 each time for shipping, and minimum two weeks) for service twice within the first three months as the network adapter failed within a few day of use. I finally just bought a $20 USB network adapter. Will not buy ASUS again, which is disappointing! Otherwise, a great laptop.

First off, I want to thank Amazon for their amazing service once again. Ordered this laptop with prime and got it in 2 days. I was going to pull the trigger on the Lenovo website but now I'm glad I didn't. People on the forums are complaining their units kept being delayed... for even months!

Okay, lets get into the computer.

Un-boxed it, first thing I noticed was how nice it looked out the box, build quality was above average and looked great. Much better than the HP DV6T Quad that I returned due to terrible quality control and build quality on that thing was atrocious!

Powered it up and wow the screen is gorgeous. Beautiful glossy display, in FULL HD 1920x1080 of awesomeness. Viewing angles are great, colors pop and blacks are deep making a very rich viewing experience. The screen is very comparable to the DV6T FHD screen which I also loved, viewing angles can't quite match a quality IPS but it's close. This is subjective but one of the main selling points for me would be the gloss screen. Ever wonder why the displays on Macbooks and iMacs ect are so amazing and colors are so rich and vibrant? A big reason for that is the glossy overlay.

Keyboard and mouse feels literally 10x better than the DV6T, the touchpad clicks registered nicely, almost Macbook like. The tracking is great, keyboard travel is just right with just the right amount of feedback for you fast typists. Backlit keys are a great feature to have. No complaints here. Love the input combo.

Make no mistake by it's appearance on the outside, though it may look like any other normal multimedia laptop, inside is the guts of a MONSTER. This baby will run neck and neck with custom Sager's and Alienwares costing twice as much! Which is amazing since it doesn't weigh 15 lbs, isn't 4 inches thick and doesn't look like a fallen piece from the stealth bomber.

This thing rips, it will play literally any new game on High or Ultra settings at full 1080p! With very smooth 30-60fps! It packs a double whammy, Ivy Bridge 3rd Generation Core i7 Quad Processor and a Kepler based GTX660M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory! Throw any project at it, it will churn it up and beg for more.

Toss in an open mSATA slot that operates in SATA III 6GB/s and you can stick a 128/256GB mSATA SSD in there as the main duty drive, then use the mechanical drive for all your storage needs. It's a win/win situation! Lesser mortals who are stuck with computers that don't have an mSATA port need to take drastic measures in order to have the same awesome capabilities. Usually needing to remove the optical drive completely in order to replace it with a hard drive caddy, allowing room for their mechanical drive since the original space would be now occupied with a full size SSD.

Let's wrap up this review with some straight to the point answers.

Does it have USB 3.0? Of course it does!

HDMI out? YES!

Blu-ray burner? YES!

Card reader? YES!

Does it really come with a FHD 1920x1080 display? YES! YES! YES!

This is the swiss army knife of computers, If I had to write down everything I wanted in a computer, this one would have it all. I would pay twice as much for this system if I needed to, it's really that good! Go buy one yourself, dooooo it!

This computer is just awesome. It has very nice specs considering the price. Overall, this computer has handled everything I have thrown at it, which includes: Crysis, Ableton, and Photoshop. Aesthetically speaking, this computer looks very nice with it's gunmetal finish, very classy. The screen on this computer is flawless, especially with 1920x1080p. It looks just like the retina display on the new mac book pro. The JBL speakers do nice work to any music (mind you they have actual sub-woofers.) The webcam is also very nice, with a nice 720p output. The i7 processor can be overclocked, which allows it to multitask with easy. I have had no problems with this computer and is a very good competitor to the new mac book pro. So, if you want performance with a sleek design and at an affordable price, this is the ultimate laptop!

I believe this problem is because of the too fragile display, with which i had to play around to 'fix' the problem temporarily. I have returned the item because of this problem only. Found there are some reviews grossly off mark when I finally have it in my hand. here is my take:

1) The build quality is solid with anodized rose-golden metal backing and inside. No keyboard reflex while typing.

2) The keyboard layout takes some time to get used to. The keys are a bit too small.

3) Very little heat or noise dissipation while surfing the net, unlike my 3-yr-old mbp.

4) The screen is bright and clear from wide angles, A+.

5) It weighs maybe even lighter than my 15" mbp, which is decent.

6) To my surprise, very few bloatwares installed if any.

7) heard it's lighting fast with mSATA. Can't wait to try it out.

I purchased this laptop after doing some research for laptops tuned toward gaming. PC Magazine rated this laptop as a top pick and gave it their "Editor's Choice" for it's power and capabilities. I have had this laptop for over 6 months, and I absolutely love it. The screen resolution (1080p) is fantastic and along with the NVIDIA graphics card provides a crisp and clear visual experience. The cooling element is nicely designed, with the heat vent on the left side of the computer, allowing the heat of the machine to escape through one vent, thus making the keyboard always cool (This was unlike my old HP laptop, where the heat escaped through the bottom and sides of the laptop, making the keyboard incredibly hot after long gaming sessions). The keyboard itself is very crispy--my hand freely flows from key to key, and the keys are filled in in-between so no food/dirt/etc. gets underneath the keys, and the keys can be lit up during nighttime. The only real complaint I have is the trackpad. The right and left keys on the track pad are like an Apple laptop, where they are embedded within the trackpad itself (there is a faint visible line that separates the right and left keys, unlike an Apple laptop. However, I wouldn't not buy this laptop because of this (I also personally use an external mouse). On another note, I recently did a complete factory restore (to clear a lot of program clutter I had) and I found it incredibly easy to do. You simply hit the One-Touch Recovery button, hit accept and the laptop takes care of the rest.

If you're looking to purchase a gaming laptop, I would highly recommend this one. I would also recommend buying it here, off Amazon. Lenovo's website store seems to be incredibly slow. When I originally went to place my order with Lenovo, the site said the laptop would SHIP in 3 weeks. Here on Amazon, it shipped the day after I purchased it, and arrived in 2 days.

I chose the 5 star rating because it deserves nothing less. The included apps are mind boggling. The set up was a breeze. It is rapid in the search mode and super easy to work with. I would recommend this highly. It has more features than I know what to do with. I will be learning how to use features that my previous computers did not include for a long time. Buy one! It has windows 7 which is easy to use. I tried my sisters laptop with windows 8 and it sucks! It is not a joke that windows 8 is something to give to someone you hate.

Although everything else about this laptop is very impressive, especially the utility of the touch screen, the trackpad is ridiculously poorly designed.

The trackpad may work fine for a novice who only requires it's use for basic web browsing and e-mail, but for those of us who would use it often to make on the fly precision mouse movements in order to edit graphics, or play games, the trackpad is useless.

It has strong aluminum texturizing to match the rest of the top surface of the laptop; which means it has deep horizontal grooves that allow for easy horizontal movement but dramatically inhibit vertical movement.

I found that moving up or down required a much lighter touch than moving right or left because my fingers got caught on the horizontal grooves, causing the mouse to stutter.

This inconsistency was infuriating for the few moments I used the trackpad to try and 'two finger scroll' down a webpage. I don't know about my wife, but I'd send the laptop back.

Now that I have had a few days to mess around with this laptop, I feel like it is worth letting everyone know how great it is. I guarantee you, once you move to a touch screen laptop you will never want to go back.

The device is very quick to power on, and unlock some other laptops I have had it is very quick to shift between standby and operational. When I am done I simply close the lid and it goes to sleep conserving power very quickly. When I'm ready to use it again, I flip it open, tap the space bar and it is ready to go after entering my password. I no longer feel the need to keep it plugged in constantly like I have with my previous laptops.

The bottom of the laptop is a very hard plastic, presumably to make it more comfortable in you lap, although it does blow out warm air after using it for awhile. It isn't uncomfortable, but I am considering getting a laptop cooler to set it on for extended use. The lid and upper part are a brushed metal and looks very nice. It is probably the most aesthetically pleasing Acer I have had.

Unlike my previous laptops, the keys are all isolated from one another and protrude through the single piece brushed metal top. I think this makes it much more durable than your average keyboard for a laptop, although I shudder to think of the pain to replace a key if you every do have an issue. I don't think it will be a problem, and I do like the keyboard and layout, along with the full number pad to the right. It also has a mousepad at the bottom, although I don't find myself using that too much.

The touch screen is great! It is very responsive and apparently supports multi-touch up to 10 fingers, although I can't imagine when I would need to utilize that. This is big selling point of the laptop. Windows 8 is the best OS Microsoft has put out, so long as you have a touch screen. Most everything about it is very intuitive, and I find myself transition between tasks much easier than on previous versions of Windows.

The computer comes ready to go without too much bloatware on it. I have yet to find any annoying apps that I had to immediately get rid of. I have gotten nowhere near doing a full tweak of the PC to kill extra processes and services, but it doesn't feel necessary based on the speed of this laptop. It has a Windows Experience of 5.8, which is better than I would expect at this price range. For those so interested, the sub scores are Processor: 6.8, Memory: 7.2, Graphics: 5.8, Gaming Graphics: 6.6, and Primary Hard Disk: 5.9. In any case it has more than enough horse power to handle most tasks you would expect to perform with a system in this price range.

The final item I want to plug is the sound system. That is not normally something you think of in a laptop, but Acer went to great lengths to give this machine incredible sound. It has a 4 speaker sound system, and you can watch movies on this device and be very happy about it. You will most likely not want to have the volume cranked up all the way unless you are hearing impaired! It is literally the best sound I have ever heard from a laptop.

The drawbacks are that this has no optical drive. I had honestly not even noticed that prior to ordering, but then I considered how much I actually used the drive on my last laptop and decided I didn't care. My main other complaint is this is a bit heavier than I would expect for an ultrathin laptop, but it isn't massively heavier than I would expect. I attribute this mainly to the reasonably powerful hardware installed.

If you are ready to jump into Windows 8, this is the laptop you want. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I also purchased this laptop at Walmart like the other poster, but my experience has actually been pretty positive. I give it 4 stars not because it can compare to a more expensive computer but because, considering the price, it's actually a good purchase for any one looking for a computer to browse the web, watch movies, listen to music, all of the normal activities. If you're looking for a computer capable of handling high-end games, video editing, or more intensive programs then you're not looking for a laptop under $300. Everyone else can get by just fine with this product.

Works flawlessly. Be careful of some confusion in reading reviews online. There are a lot of Compaq CQ57 out there. This is a CQ57-489WM (big difference! This is a Dual Core, not single or CoreDuo). Granted it is not a gaming computer but for the same price as a small net-book its the way to go. It Runs HP drivers and user friendly HP updating programs (which I have on the rest of my computers and love). It comes with 2GB RAM but is upgradable to 8GB for about $40. Which I highly recommend. Never an issue in the last 4 months I have owned it, and it is used extensively daily.

I bought this laptop at Walmart. It's a great laptop when it works. However, it hibernates itself randomly and sometimes very frequently. I have hibernate set to never and it still does it. It hibernates plugged in and on the battery.

Days like today, when it's hibernating every 5 to 20 minutes, I want to pitch the thing off a bridge.

I was on Maui with a new Toshiba laptop in the $400 price range I had bought from Best Buy. The hard drive died within a few months and so I needed a quick replacement since no Best Buy on Maui and I couldn't go grab my other laptop at home on another island. I swung into Walmart and picked up the cheapest laptop I could find, it was this model. But low and behold, the thing is reliable. Surfs the web no problem, plays my itunes collection no problem, does Word processing no problem, watch Youtube no problem, burn cds and dvds no problem. It can play old video games no problem. For more modern games thats what my high def tv and xbox 360 is for along with my ipad. Long story short, great computer for someone who doesn't need all the fancy bells and whistles (of course dvd players were once considered whistles in laptops before). Plus its old fashion. When the battery dies out, I can cheaply pop it out and get a replacement so its low maintence, unlike my Apple stuff I got to send back and pay at least a $100 to replace the battery now days. I would say if you don't know what computer you want get this one cause it will do what you need. The biggest crime in computing is always being enticed to buy a $1000+ computer when you don't use any of the functions. Unless you're making movies, playing video games, or need some super high tech program for work or your hobby, stick with what does the job unless you're into fashion, then I would advise spending it on Apple Macbook pro or Air and staying away from those Ultrabooks until they make better ones.

This is a good laptop for the average computer user. It gets over six hours of battery life in the right computer settings. It runs minecraft pretty well (not perfect though). The sound on it is very good through headphones. The speakers are ok but you would expect that from a laptop. The reason for only four stars though is this model has the infamous Ralink 5390 802.11 b/g/n wireless adapter in it which has pretty poor connectivity I had low and intermittent connection even being ten feet from the router. I have ordered a new wireless card it is an intel I am hoping that it is compatible with this notebook. I highly recommend intel networking equipment.

I bought this laptop after doing quite a bit of research, looking for a replacement for the family computer at a reasonable price point. Considering the value of the computer against the price, I think this is a good deal, though this machine is not ideal for all uses. This computer is good for general use, such as surfing the net, playing the occasional game or working on spreadsheets. It's neither a heavy gaming rig nor a heavy-duty business machine, but it is sufficient for almost any everyday task that can be thrown at it. This is the ideal for which I was looking. In that capacity it does itself proud.

Having previously bought a Hewlett-Packard laptop I had hoped that this machine would have the standard media set, meaning recovery disks and documentation, but this is not the case. HP has elected to require the owner to make their own recovery media, which is a cost-saving measure for HP and a tedious annoyance for end-users. To be fair, it seems that most manufacturers have taken this route, so this should come as no surprise. Making recovery media requires 3 single-layer DVDs, and the creation tool says that either DVD+R or DVD-R platters are acceptable. I did not try dual-layer media.

On first boot, the user is greeted with a welcome/setup application that guides the user through the process of setting up wireless networking, naming the user account and of course registration. I personally think this application is very cartoony in appearance, using the image of hands to walk you through turning pages and transition screens. While it's clear HP is targeting home users with this approach, it seems out of place for more professional use. It's a personal preference, though, and it accomplishes the end goal.

Once booted up into Windows 7 the first time, the barrage of "Register Me" and "Activate this Software" popup windows began and it not only was distracting and annoying but it interfered with my personal setup. In the middle of creating the recovery media, a window popped over top of the recovery application asking if I wanted to make recovery DVDs. I would have preferred that it detect the process in progress, or at most give me a system tray notification instead. Though annoying, this can be dealt with either by activation/registration or performing an uninstall of the offending application(s).

My first order of business was to strip the extra stuff I don't want from the OS. I removed MS Office 2007 trial and I removed all things Norton/Symantec. This was mercifully very easy and quick. Now, that said, for the user that actually wants these applications (and I suspect there's quite a few people who do) having these pre-installed will be very convenient. For me, I have no intention of using any of these as I have software for which I have licenses already, so I removed them.

Some people have difficulties with the touch pad, though I have not. I personally dislike most laptop touchpads and this one is no exception though it works as it should and is flush with the rest of the plastic shell. That said, the touchpad "mouse buttons" are actually one unified rocker button that is stiff and unresponsive.

The keyboard is another matter entirely. Though I have had no issues with the keyboard, I am concerned that the wireless adapter is enabled and disabled through the F12 key, not separated from the rest of the keys on the keyboard. This is asking for trouble for people that do not use a separate keyboard. HP can expect complaints about the wireless getting cut on and off via bad keystrokes.

Another puzzling design decision is that there appears to be no latch for the laptop lid. It simply opens or closes, no more or less. In my case this is not a major issue as the system will sit on a desk and not move; for those on the go this could be a potential issue, especially if the computer is dropped. Keep this in mind.

None of the ports on this unit are on the back; all of them are located on the sides, including the power and the VGA interfaces. At first this bothered me. I can see some wisdom in it now, though, because of the hinge and the ability to move the system flush with the back of the desk which is against the wall. Again, this is beneficial for me. If you are left-handed, though, this could be very problematic as two of the USB ports, the HDMI port and the VGA interface are all on the left and if all of those are plugged in the cords will interfere with external mice. In my case I am connecting an external monitor, mouse and keyboard so the system does not need to be directly in front of the user.

In terms of performance, this is a peppy system. There's 4 GB of RAM, expandable to 8, which gives Windows and applications plenty of breathing room. The processor is 2.13 GHz with 2 cores, sufficient for most software (though not for high-end games). The hard drive is a 7200-RPM drive, a very noticeable upgrade from the 5400-RPM drive in my older HP. The graphics adapter is really the only weakness when it comes to speed, but even so it is still a decent graphics adapter and will work just fine for the majority of users.

I do like the styling with the interesting texture and color of the plastic shell. It is most certainly not necessary but it's a break from the ordinary that makes this laptop a little more interesting. HP did a great job with making the touchpad seamless, too, which will keep crud from gathering in the edges.

Overall, I am satisfied with this system. It meets the needs for which I purchased it, it's stylish and it performs well. It is by no means perfect, but at the price point it's more system than I could otherwise ask for. If you need a good workhorse laptop that is affordable, this is a good candidate. Be aware that there are a few negatives too, such a port placement, when purchasing, though an argument can be made for the negatives being no more than personal preference.

For the most part, this laptop does everything you'd expect it to. Windows 7 has some quirks, but I'm liking it for the most part (coming from Vista is a much easier transition than I'd imagine coming from XP would be). The HDMI connection is a snap to use (Turn on TV, plug in cable, the computer switches all the video settings correctly. Unplug the cable and the computer switches everything back to the built in display automatically). Bloatware was fairly minimal and easy to uninstall. Not coming with backup discs is annoying, but Windows lets you make a set yourself, so at least there's something. The battery lasts me 2-3 hours depending how much video I watch. The 4GB of RAM and 320 GB hard drive make this a good value. It's a laptop and it works.

The only annoying software related dislike is the defualt of locking the Fn commands as I use the F1, F2, etc keys a lot. This requires messing with BIOS to turn off, but would be useful for an average user who doesn't understand what F-keys do.

I'm really annoyed with the input devices, though. The keyboard is mostly standard, but there's a couple of small things that annoy. The quick launch buttons on the left are useless and get in the way (I always hit "calculator" instead of Ctrl). Esc is shifted over the quick launch buttons, so I keep hitting F1 instead of Esc and F2 instead of F1, etc. There's nothing to differenciate the arrow keys from the other keys, so it's hard to use them without looking. Typing on the keyboard is nice, though.

The trackpad is really annoying. It's difficult to use without looking. If you have two fingers on the pad, it doesn't respond at all (if there's multitouch, I haven't figured out how to turn it on). It's fairly easy to accidentally touch while typing. When I close the lid and open it, it doesn't respond the first time I touch it (which leads to me closing windows and tabs accidentally trying to get the pad to respond). I've eventually learned to work with the trackpad, but that involved changing how I type and use the computer by holding my wrists up, which I really shouldn't have to do.

For the price I paid ($120 less than Amazon currently offers), I can live with the problems. Otherwise, they'd annoying enough for me to look at another manufacturer.

EDIT: Less than a year after buying the laptop, the battery is dead. It barely holds a charge (about 20-30 minutes) and dies unexpectedly (while reading over 20% left on the meter). I never kept the computer plugged in with a full battery charge (charge the battery, unplug, use down to 15-20%, charge again) and used it about 8 hours per day (off at night and while I'm at work). The death of the battery was very sudden: it seemed fine for the first 8-9 months of use, started turning off unexpectedly for a couple of weeks, and then completely failed to hold a charge.

I am a college student and, like most college students, I'm pretty broke. Not only am I just a broke college student I am photographer and photoshop lover! I am going into photogrpahy and the computer that I had was over seven years old and bearly running. I needed and I mean needed a good laptop that had all the memory capablity that I needed to run PhotoShop and whatever other photo editing programs I needed.

You could say that my needs for the right computer and my wallet size didn't really see eye to eye. Most of the computers I looked at(that I could afford) were always laking someing. It could be the screen size or the ram or some other little quirk that wouldn't fit my needs. So I was stressing!!

When I ordered this laptop I was so nervus because if it didn't work the way I needed it to then I would have been in a very sad state of mind! Not to mention this is one of my first orders off of Amazon!! (I was a nervus wreck waiting for my order to come in and trying to upload and install photoshop while holding my breathe and crossing my fingers that it would install perfectly haha).

When my laptop arravied it was perfect! I uploaded Adobe Creatve Suite 3 and the Topaz Labs bundle to it and it works like a charm! Oh, and I can work in PhotoShop AND listen to Pandora or ITunes at the SAME time!!! It's amazing! Even with all of the programs I have installed it is so so so fast!

If you are a college student and a photographer or photoshopper and are stressing about finding the right computer then this one is the one for you! You don't have to be a college student or a photographer to love it, but trust me you will love it!!!

DO not purchase this laptop. I bought one and in two months the screen stopped working. Additionally, I heard that this has happened to a few other people that have purchased HP Laptops. Worst part about it is that HP would not help me b/c they said it is out of the "21" day warranty. What kind of company only covers their product for the first 21 days. At least offer a 90 coverage. This has been a very disappointing experience for me. I highly urge anyone considering purchasing this product to rethink their decision.

Fist off, by the look of this unit some might say it looks alot like the Macbook pro 13", with that being said, looks are NOT everything, This HP G62 packs alot of KICKASS punch, Unlike the other person who wrote that he's having a track pad problem.....GET GLASSES if you cannot see the track pad. One of the features regarding the track pad is the shut off, you just tap twice on the led thats located on top of the pad too disable the track pad, of which then an amber light comes on letting you know that you have disabled the track pad, too enable it, just tap twice and your good too go, this feature was made if you are going too use an external mouse. Now as far as This unit's functionality, its awesome, all hard drives depending on your configuration, are @ 7200 rpm,the base CPU is the new i3 core by intel, of which is upgradeable too the i5 or i7. It also features the new L3 cache, giving you a smoother ride then the older L2 cache systems. The system bus is well over 1066MHz, uses very fast DDR3 ram of which this unit is upgradeable too 8 gigs of ram. In addition the graphics are in true native, and watching a dvd was an experience, with the Altec Lansing audio surround. OK now for multi-task, I have compared it too the Macbook Pro, With the Intel core 2 duo running @ 2.8 Ghz, the results were very impressive, The HP (base model) not only beat the Macbook Pro in muli-tasking, but also ran apples own software like itunes and others with little effort, running adobe CS4 was so fast I could not believe what I was seeing. As far as surfing the web, I have never been on a mobile device that has speeds that are just unbelievable. HP and Intel have put together a product that surpasses systems worth $2000 and up. Of coarse if you deside too get your HP G62 FULLY loaded with the i7 intel cpu, blueray, 500gb hard drive, and dedicated graphics, and built in bluetooth, this unit will run you about $2400. Now weather you get the base model or upgraded version, 1 word....Kickass, its about time a PC company challenges the bar, weather your a casual user or an extreme user, makes no difference, this unit is built for decades too come! Well worth the money!

I got this laptop for my daughter. I was setting it up for her. At first, everything was fine until I had to use the touchpad. That's where it all the disappointment started. I tried everything and finally, I had to call Asus tech support. Another disappointment here! I started talking to a Tech Support rep at 3:30pm and by the time I was finished, it was 8:30pm. I spoke to 3. The first 2, after 30 minutes of trying to help me, we got disconnected. The 3rd one, after letting him know exactly what the instructions of the other 2 and what was the result, he just told me to do a recovery. That took over 4 hours. All of that so I can make the touch pad work. Too much. I returned it and will probably not go to Asus again. I am back to HP which I had so much better tech support experience. Just decided to try Asus since its for my daughter. I figured with the spec and price, you can't go wrong. I am so wrong. Bought her HP and never looked back!

I ordered this computer when I spilled water on my old one and burned out the sound. If you like smart phones, and that swiping app technology than this is the computer for you. It is fast and sounds very good. This is my 3rd Asus computer, and they have the most speed for the money. I am not a smartphone user and didn't realize that Windows 8 was this technology so I continue to use both of my computers. I also didn't realize it didn't come with Microsoft office loaded and I can't load mine because it is a different version. But those are issues I did not research and are of no fault of this product. Technically up to date machine, that does the job and is fast.

I've had this computer for about a week now and I really like almost everything about it. My only complaint is that the internal speaker is awful, really awful, and I can't find an equalizer to try to play with the mix. The speaker is so awful (I'm pretty sure my little cell phone has better sound than this thing)I considered sending the computer back. However, I had already loaded all of my files onto it before I tried listening to a CD so I decided that I will get a pair of blue tooth speakers to use instead of the internal speakers. I am enjoying everything else about the computer even Windows 8, which I thought I might hate but is actually quite fun and useful. The seller was terrific. The laptop arrived promptly, was packed well, and was exactly what I ordered.

The product was shipped very promptly. It arrived in perfect condition. The only complaint that I have is that sometimes the cursor seems to get stuck on the left side of the screen. Also, the size of the font changes very easily when on the Internet. Otherwise I really love the computer!

This laptop worked perfectly right out of the box! I had absolutely no problems setting this machine up or in getting it to connect to my network. It does everything that it was advertised as being able to do. Even the built in webcam works great. If there is even a single negative , it's that it comes with a lot of superfluous HP software. Other than that, I am incredibly pleased with this laptop.

Overall, I'm very happy with this laptop. Works great, is fast, clear picture, and love the Windows 7 vs. my old Vista. Only gripe is the battery lasts under 2 hours with normal use not the 3.75 hours listed. We keep ours plugged in mostly, and use on the go as necessary. Would buy similar one again, just upgrade the battery.

The internal microphone is broken, and not just in the one I bought. According to HP, it's broken in the entire G60 series of laptops. I've had mine for one week; I discovered the microphone was broken on the second day, and I've been talking with HP's case managers about my options. Looks like I'm going to return it, because there's no fix in the works at HP. And who needs a laptop that you can't use for videoconferencing, Skype, Gmail Videochat, and so on? It's a shame, too, because the laptop is otherwise great.

Why is HP still selling this product when they know it's dysfunctional?

I too was very frustrated when I purchased this laptop and discovered an issue with the mic. However, HP has put out a downloadable software driver and I installed it and it works fine now!!! My wife uses skype and messanger. As for the rest of the laptop....we are very happy with it. The webcam has fantastic clarity even in not so good lighting. So, ignore the previous gripes with the internal mic. You may purchase the laptop with the defective driver but you can download the new one in two minutes.

I have only had this laptop for a week and so far it has been working very nicely. I have always been an HP fan so I love it even more. I love the look and feel. The graphics is wonderful and the brightview screen enhances the colors. All the features makes it very exciting to use and I love the fact that it has a built in webcam and wireless network ready. I have also notice that it is not a noisy machine in which is a plus.....thanks its wonderful!
