This laptop is AWESOME!! I just got this laptop for Christmas and I have been on it for 3 days straight. The speed is incredible, the set-up is easy, and the layout is standard. Windows 8 is easy to set up and very understandable to use after a few hint websites. The only problem I have with Windows 8 is that there are a lot of keyboard shortcuts that are impossible to remember. The speed of the start-up on this computer is insane! I am able to push the power button, take a drink of water, and its already loaded. The layout is very standard across the board. The only difference in my old laptop was that I did not have a full keypad which I now find very useful. The only complaint I have about this computer is that the sound is not as loud as I had expected. On full volume I find myself sitting quite close to the computer and sometimes struggling to hear certain words. With headphones this is not a problem, however.

Overall I give this computer 4.5 out of 5. Although the sound is a downside, I have not found any other problems I have with this notebook. It is fabulous for anyone of any age and very versitile.

With shipping and tax, the total for this computer (refurbished) was about $350, taking a huge chunk off the original price. It has plenty of space and runs all the games I need it to quite well (LoL, Pokemon online/Pokemon showdown!). It has a perfect amount of weight to it as well as a huge screen, great for watching movies. Paired with a nice, full keyboard for taking notes and a large track pad that understands gestures, the computer is fantastic, especially for the price I got it.

this puter is now almost 4 years old and only now am i starting to have problems with it. the amd x2 still competes with in the market today, it is a bit bulky to move around all the time, but still portable enough i can throw it in my pack and leave, i read the other reviews and the really don't talk about this puter at all. so i don't understand the low rating but it is great, i game on it webcam and surf the net all day, what else do you need it to do? the problems i'm starting to have is the dvd drive is going out as well as the screen, but take into all the time that dvd has been turning and how long it's been spinning through its life and how old this baby is it is to be expected. same with the screen, in retrospec i should've givin it 5 stars. and fyi this big guy has gone with me through 3combat tours (i'm in the army) and on its 4th now. so it's had a harder life than most laptops.

I have had this computer for three years. It is my only computer, so between myself and three kids it stays pretty busy. I have had to replace the keyboard, it's pretty easy to knock the keys off if you aren't being careful. I also up graded the memory and replaced the dvd drive. It still runs perfectly, despite having two separate viruses removed from it over the past year. It is heavy, I would NOT recommend this computer if you have to carry your laptop around with you. The large screen and full sized number keyboard are really worth the extra weight and bulk to me though, so I just muscle through it. In all, I would absolutely buy this computer again. Thanks for reading my review :-)

I ordered a Dell Inspiron laptop 1 1/2 years ago and it worked great until recently. The screen went black and the system would not start. Turned out that the video card had failed.

I contacted Dell customer support to activate my next business day warranty and after more than a week I have gotten nowhere with them. My claim has been "escalated" twice with the same excuses and refusal to fix the problem. They claim they have no video cards in stock and I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for a replacement card, 2-3 weeks for a loaner system, or 2-3 weeks for a replacement system -basically my NEXT DAY warranty is anything but.

I explained that this is a mission critical system and a 2-3 week delay is unacceptable given the high price I paid for the next day warranty. I offered to take another make or model of graphics card and even offered to go buy the card myself if the agreed to pay for it.

They refused to help in any way. So, I am left with a useless laptop for 2-3 weeks until it becomes convenient for them to honor the warranty. I will never buy another Dell product again and recommend that others who are not technically experienced with fixing computers or that need a "mission critical" system that they look elsewhere because Dell cannot be relied upon to fix broken systems in a timely manner.

I love dell products, but I think the seller failed to mention this item was refurbished. and the seller did not do a good job refurbishing it either, as a few days after I started using the product it broke down on me.

I bought a very similar computer to the one listed here, and I am very happy with it. The problem with this particular listing is that it is way too expensive for the device you are getting. I got my Vostro for $1000 about 2 months ago, and it is substantially faster than this one (1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM).

The actual computer itself has been great. It's certainly a little bulkier than I would like it to be, but it's nice having the 15.4 inch wide screen. I also got the 9-cell battery which adds some weight and protrudes from the back of the body slightly. Having 4 USB ports is a particularly desirable feature, and although I have only used the SIM card reader a few times, I can see how that would come in handy as well.

I ended up choosing the Vostro over Dell's Inspiron 1520/1521 -which is essentially the same computer, but is marketed toward home users, whereas the Vostro is labeled as a 'small business computer' -because at the time, the Inspiron was only offered with the Vista operating system. Also, you can customize the small business computers so they don't have all the junk programs their home & office computers come with. Overall, I was able to get more bang for my buck with the Vostro.

My advice is if you are going to buy a Dell, buy it direct and wait for a good promotion to pop up. Try searching the internet for "Dell Coupons," and although Dell doesn't usually offer them, you will often be redirected to a good limited-time offer at their official website.

ASUS B53S-XH71 (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop Review

This was my first venture into ASUS land and it starts out with disappointment.

I pulled it out of the box and it would not power up. I called ASUS support who cordially walked me through a few tests and determined that there was a problem with the motherboard or the power circuit and the unit should be returned.

I'm hoping this is just a fluke. I opted for the exchange. Maybe I'll be able to give it a higher rating if I can get a working unit...

UPDATE:

The replacement unit is working like a champ. I had zero trouble exchanging it. In fact, they shipped the new unit before the old one was picked up from my house.

It's a bit bigger than I expected. It just barely fit into the backpack laptop case I had for my old machine. The touchpad click is annoyingly sensitive. I ended up disbaling that and just using the buttons for clicks.

The screen is a little disappointing out of the box. Tweaking the saturation, tint, etc.... improves it, but it's still not a fantastic display unfortunately. Other than that, I have to say the fingerprint reading software is a bit glitchy -it sometimes gives an error and will not let the user to login with his/her fingerprint. That's a bummer. The hard drive is also a bit on the slow side in terms of actual performance.

Why, then, would I give this a rating of good? Because this is in comparison to powerful desktops and significantly more expensive laptops. For the price, it's not bad.

Were I to buy this computer again, I'd probably pull the HDD and put in an SSD with a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. Then, I expect, this would be a truly fine machine.

This is the first time I've ever written a review even though I shop on Amazon ALL the time. I am so disgusted that I had to write this review. This the most pathetic excuse for a computer I've ever owned. Here's the brief history:

Purchased 12/22/11 from Amazon.

Loading software a week later (first use), CD drive broke CD (Office 2010) got stuck inside computer. Had to ship computer off to ASUS(I had to pay $41 in shipping to get it repaired) to retrieve CD and to unfreeze the system. Had the Office CD not been stuck inside, I would have demanded immediate refund from Amazon.

Got the computer back, and the repair sheet said optical drive had been replaced. Loaded software successfully. Next day when I tried to load a CD to reinstall my printer software, CD drive was broken. Computer wouldn't recognize drive at all. Sent it off again. Got it back around Jan. 27. Jan. 29, transferred data and started using computer.

Feb. 2, 10:30 a.m. (4th day of regular use), computer shut down out of the blue.

Since then, it has been shutting down and restarting out of the blue as well as after getting an error message saying "AMD driver stopped responding but has recovered." I have not called ASUS until today because I knew their response would be "send it in," and I don't have the time or patience to deal with that. But I did break down and call today. The ONLY solutions offered were (1) reinstall the operating system to see if the problem is a software problem. If that doesn't fix it, then go to option 2, send it to ASUS. I asked the tech support guy if reinstalling the operating system would mean that I would have to buy licenses for the software (such as Office 2010 and Word 2010), and he said yes. So, he wanted me to spend hundreds of dollars on new software just to see "if" the problem was a software problem. Of course I said no. I inquired about a refund, and he said I would have to request it through Amazon. Amazon's policy is 30 days for new computers. My mistake was that I didn't request a refund the first time the CD drive broke when I was installing software. I've learned my lesson.

Also, the customer service is pathetic. I was told today that they do not have the capability to remotely access a computer (like Dell and probably other companies do) to try to fix a problem. They also only have a "few" local contract tech people who can try to repair computers locally. I do not live in an area where there are any contracted tech people. So, my only option is to pack up and send off the computer to see "if" they can repair this piece of junk and hope they don't wipe the system clean.

I forgot to add the touch pad is the worst ever. If you just place your finger on the touchpad, the cursor jumps around as much as one inch. I have changed every setting I can find. Oh, and I forgot about the time the touchpad quit working all together. Luckily I had an old plug-in mouse, so I was able to use that to download a new touchpad driver.

I called my local computer guy, and he agreed about ASUS's customer service, and he said he unfortunately cannot recommend ASUS anymore solely becaue of the poor tech support.

So, this has been my personal experience as a first-time and last-time ASUS purchases. It has been nothing but one problem after another. I regret that I spent a good $1000 on this computer.

Okay, I cheated and got mine at Wal-Mart on a whim only because they were pushing them out the store at my local store for $290 due to remodeling in process.

Let's be realistic and admit the specs are hardly awe inspiring, but I needed a laptop for school and it was either this or a netbook with less RAM, smaller screen, and shorter battery life.

After all, where else can you get a 15.6 inch laptop with a full keyboard that can manage to squeeze nearly 5 hours off a standard battery even with wireless running.

Now for the good points:

* DDR3 RAM instead of the usual DDR2

* RAM is easily upgraded. Hint, remove the battery and the lone screw holding the RAM plate in place will be staring you in the face. Although I'm not sure, this may be a safety precaution to make sure you do remove the battery first.

* 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD standard. Most netbooks cut these specs in close to half

* Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit instead of 32 bit Windows Starter found on most netbooks

* Plays video galore due to upgrade graphics capability over that normally found with the Atom processor

* Crisp, clear screen with no glare

* Speedier than the Atom processor in nearly everything

* No getting confused by buttons on this model. This is as plain Jane as you can get and that's good

* 15.6 inch screen means less page scrolling than with a netbook

* Not as heavy as you might think. Tops, maybe 5 pounds

* Rated at 4.5 hours but I managed to squeak nearly 5 hours

* Slick outside surface doesn't hold fingerprints, an oddity in the low price area

* Keys give decent feedback although it's not in the Lenovo class by any stretch

* Want a surprise? Play a music file and listen to the sound. This sucker comes with Altec Lansing speakers!

* Heat? What heat? This puppy doesn't make much. Even better, I have yet to hear the fan. My last Acer netbook made so much heat I couldn't put it on my lap after a while.

* Cheaper than a tablet and only marginally more expensive than a netbook

Nothing is perfect and this unit is no different:

* It's DDR3 RAM but it's limited to 4GB even though it's a 64 bit OS

* Bloatware galore

* As slab sided and ugly as ugly can get. Black plastic and acres of it without a lick of color anywhere. Guess for $300 you can't get artistic.

* Outside is devoid of fingerprints but interior finish picks them up like a Swiffer picks up dirt

* No dust over or protector for SD card slot. That's odd.

* One USB port is right next to power plug entry meaning no fat dongles allowed in that slot

* BIOS settings, while effective, are straight out of DOS in terms of design. May be a little nit-picky but instead of using the cursor to make choices you have to read a menu and press the appropriate F key to activate menu options

* Trackpad is worthless. No scrolling and since it's the same color as the casing it's impossible to see in the dark

* Like warning lights telling you about HDD activity, blah, blah, blah? Ain't happening here. Just one light to the left telling you the power is on and another to the right advising that wireless is working. No indication when plugged in that it's even charging (blind faith on that one)

Overall, I give this unit high marks because it's so much more than you might expect for the money all while being as plain a package as you can get.

I ordered this notebook for my father. It was delivered very fast. We like the appearance and the keyboard is very comfortable. However, my father found some flashing black lines across the screen at the first use. The lines were not always there, but once they appeared, they stuck around until the window was closed and reopened. Most of the times, even the close-and-reopen strategy didn't work. We let it rest for one night and give it another try the second day, but things didn't get better. I returned it.

I have had hardware issues with this laptop since I bought it. I've sent it back to the factory because of the modem, and it still doesn't work correctly. At least once a day the modem decides to stop working. I bumped the unit slightly with my hand when I picked it up and it dumped all my information and did an emergency shut down. This was literally a slight bump! The mousepad is a nightmare. I've had this computer for about 8 months and have had problems with it the whole time. When it is running, it runs slowly. I'm sure that is due to hardware issues as well. I will probably buy myself another computer just to end the aggravation, but it won't be another Compaq!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is my first experience with Ultrabooks. Up to this point I have worked with laptops that are designed to be desktop replacement systems or family entertainment systems, so the journey into the land of Ultrabooks is a new one for me. So far, I have mixed feelings about this system, mostly due to HP's recovery media creation tool, but my overall impression is a good one so far.

In terms of size, this is a very thin and dainty notebook computer, roughly the size of a fat magazine. This gives it a very small footprint and it is relatively lightweight, making it good for stuffing in a briefcase or carry-on bag (though there are better cases for this kind of thing). I set it up on the kitchen table and as soon as my wife saw it she exclaimed "It's so cute!" Indeed, it's an attractive machine.

One of the things that caught my attention when reading the specifications on this machine is that there was no mention at all of a DVD drive. The packing materials even state "no optical drive". Sure enough, there is none so loading up software will require a USB DVD drive or a properly loaded thumb drive. This is not a huge deal but it is something that must be kept in mind not everyone will appreciate having to get an additional drive just to load up software. I am not sure if HP offers a DVD R/W drive as an accessory kit.

There are exactly two USB ports on this notebook one USB 2.0 port and one USB 3.0 port. For the traveler working on a plane or a student taking notes in a class, this does not matter. However, when working at a desk and getting synchronized with the office computer having only two USB ports may be problematic. This can be overcome by using a hub, but again this requires extra hardware. It all depends on the usage two ports may be plenty. In my case and for my purposes, two is usually sufficient.

There is also an HDMI port, an Ethernet jack and an audio output jack. As is typical with most laptops, this one has an SD card reader. What this notebook does not have, though, is a VGA or DVI output. This is not necessarily a problem as this is a notebook made for someone on the go, but it does mean that connecting to a projector requires using another method.

This notebook is Bluetooth capable. This is a good thing for a lot of people. For me, though, it is less important as I have no Bluetooth accessories. I do appreciate the availability though so that I can connect accessories to it in the future.

Screen type is important to many people glossy, matte, anti-glare... This particular system has a very bright and clear glossy screen which is fine for me but may disagree with others who dislike the reflections that occur and the glare from lights. Keep this in mind.

Pleasantly, there is not a huge amount of "bloatware" on this system. Looking through the list of installed software, HP has not overly cluttered the drive with extra stuff that you won't need (though there is some stuff that I know I will never, ever use). MS Office is preloaded as is Norton Internet Security these are simple to uninstall if there is no need for them. That said, HP and Symantec have arranged a two-year license on Norton Internet Security which is outstanding for a new system right out of the box every system I have seen up to this point came with only 60-90 days of updates for the bundled internet security suite.

My first order of business when I brought the system up was to launch the recovery media creation tool. I plugged in my DVD drive, kicked off the process, and burned 9 DVDs on the way to making a set of 5 recovery DVDs. The process errored out repeatedly, complaining of errors though the DVD media I have has been reliable. I am not sure if there is a weakness in the creation tool, the DVD drive or the platters, but the process took a lot longer than it should have taken. Regardless, there is something else about the process that is even more troublesome HP allows you to make ONE and only one copy of the recovery media. If one of the five DVDs goes bad, then it's all over. This is specific to HP Sony and Asus both allow you to make multiple copies, and my other HP laptop enforced the same limit of one copy.

I dug into the performance measurement tool and the system reports a Windows Experience number of 5.6, driven by the graphics chipset (and it was the desktop graphics, not the gaming graphics, that was low). The highest number was actually the SS hard drive at 8.1, even outscoring the CPU and memory! This is a snappy little system and while it's not built for heavy gaming it has enough horsepower to handle many games.

Relating to performance because of the solid-state drive, power-on to operational time is less than 10 seconds. I absolutely love how fast this machine boots up!

I am no fan of touchpads and to be honest I find the touchpad on this notebook worse than average. It is raised which makes it too easy to inadvertently tap it while typing, and because of the way it is raised it's too easy to get stuff in the crevices around it.

As far as traveling with this notebook, it should be said that there are smaller, more portable machines out there. This one has a 13.3" screen but I have seen much smaller systems. Then again, these smaller systems usually have less power and are less capable. It comes down to whether you prefer more compactness at the expense of power or more power at the expense of compactness.

This system comes preloaded with Windows 8. In a nutshell I find it to resemble a cross between Windows 7 and MS Zune. I am not going to go into a full review of Windows 8 but I will very briefly summarize though it's best suited for tablets, it actually works nicely on this notebook and though there is a learning curve it's not bad.

Finally, I should mention the speaker system. My very first HP laptop came with Altec Lansing speakers built in to the unit. This system comes with Beats audio, and I have found them to be roughly equivalent. Sound quality is very good, especially coming from such a small machine.

HP has put together a very nice system in this Ultrabook. It is small, fast and powerful. I do not like the way it builds recovery media (and restricts you to a single copy), and I am a little bit concerned by not having more than 2 USB ports, but when considering that this machine is built for the traveler or student, this is a very nice system that's worth a look.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program ...consider this first.

This is my first experience with an ultrabook, and many of my friends will tell you that their first experience with an ultrabook is me coming up to them and saying, "check out this amazing new ultrabook"! The HP Envy Spectre XT is an outstanding choice for your SECOND computer. It is sleek, light, easy to work with, and really fast.

As I said, this is a great choice for your second computer. If you are looking for a primary computer, this is probably not going to work for you. I hate to start describing this wonderful little PC with its drawbacks, but here are the limitations. First, there is no optical drive. No CDs, DVDs, BluRay, etc. If you want to watch the occasional movie on disk, this isn't for you. Second, the hard drive is tiny. How tiny? Well at 128 GB, it is only twice the size of the largest iPhone for storage. While most iOS apps are designed to be under 1GB in size, most PC programs aren't. The OS and pre-installed software leaves you with about 90GB of usable space. That is really small. Again, not a solution for your primary PC. Finally, the GPU is not very powerful, so while the i5 processor is very speedy, the graphics aren't sufficient for most gaming. This is why I compared this to a tablet.

If you're still reading, I'll assume you have another desktop or laptop to use for your main PC, and that you are in the market for a super portable workhorse. If that's the case, look no further!

The HP Envy Spectre XT boots up faster than any other computer I have ever used. About 10 seconds! Nevertheless, you won't be booting this up often, since as an ultrabook with Windows 8, you never have to re-boot. That means it is always ready for you. You hit the power button and it is ready to work in moments. Just like an iPad, but a second or two longer. It is able to do this because Windows 8, combined with a SSD (the "hard drive" is actually flash RAM) allows it to stay suspended using almost zero power, but still be ready to go in no time. Programs load so quickly you don't even notice them loading. I keep comparing this to iOS devices, but this really isn't like any other computer you've ever used.

Once open, you are faced with the Windows 8 Metro screen. This isn't intended to be a Windows 8 review, but some parts of Windows 8 are integral to the ultrabook. For example, the glide pad, with multi-touch, makes navigating Windows 8 so easy. Another nice aspect is that you don't really have to "close" programs like you have done with previous versions of Windows. All you do is hit the Windows key and you're back to Metro. I have had every program on this PC "running" at the same time, and there was zero lag. Apparently, Windows 8 handles app switching much like iOS does. Less for the user to think about, more just getting to work.

As for getting to work, in Windows 8 you have the "App Store," just like you do with iOS. This means that the fact that you do not have an optical drive isn't a huge deal. Many of the programs you will use, you can just download from the Windows store. Netflix, Office, Angry Birds, etc. are all available as downloads. There is a great deal of XBOX integration here too, and XBOX Glass is a cool interface. For comparison (and simply because it is one of my favorite games) I downloaded Zen Pinball FX2. I then re-purchased all the Marvel themed tables. This way, I could compare them with their counterparts on my iPhone and on the XBOX 360. The tables looked exactly like their XBOX counterparts, but this is where the GPU showed its weakness. The ball movement visibly lags here, where it is fluid on the XBOX and iPhone 4S. Nevertheless, the game is very playable and well worth the purchase. Despite the integration of the Windows 8 Store, you can sideload software, but it takes a little know-how. I am able to copy the installation files from my software to another of my PCs, then I can install the software to the ultrabook. Finally, in the case of games, many require the DVD to be inserted whenever you play. Obviously, this is impossible here, but if you can find a "NOCD" patch for you game, you will be up and running. For most people, this won't be an issue, however, because you just don't have the drive space or GPU for the typical game that would require this type of work-around.

On the topic of user interface, the HP Envy Spectre shines. The keyboard is backlit for non-optimal room lighting situations, yet it doesn't appear to hit the battery life too badly for the feature. The glidepad is as good as a glidepad gets, but they are all difficult at best. The surface of the glidepad is smooth and responsive. There aren't separate buttons for right and left click. Instead, the whole glidepad responds to touch and to press. Windows 8 uses these touches differently, so it is a required feature of the glidepad. Unfortunately, due to the nature of a touch/click glidepad, I often find my cursor jumping up or down (mostly up) a half inch when I try to click. It takes a little getting used to, but it is worth it.

Finally, the ultrabook stays cool on your lap. Gone is the exhaust fan and the feeling that your pants are going to catch fire after a half hour of working. There is no need for a lap-desk to use with this ultrabook.

Small, fast, sleek, and light (I know it lists as 3 pounds, but it feels lighter), this is just the solution for portable work. As I began, if you are thinking about a tablet, you should consider this as an alternative. You get full Windows 8, full Microsoft Office (separate purchase), full printing capabilities, full Internet Explorer (or whatever other browser you like), and a full keyboard. The battery life is extraordinary, but still not what you get from an iPad. So, if you just want to surf the web and check your email, get a Chromebook. If you want a large iPhone, get an iPad. If you want a workhorse, get the HP Envy Spectre XT. You won't regret it!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Actually they have been here for a while, but I get the feeling that this is both a transition away from the desktop and a response to the tablet. The HP Spectre XT 13-2150nr 13.3-Inch Laptop (Black), is my first foray into the world of the ultrabook and I have to say I'm impressed and a little apprehensive at the same time.

I have been using a desktop computer since the Commodore days of the mid 80s. Over the decades I have built up a pretty set collection of procedures for getting things done. The hardware and software change over the years, but the basic idea stays pretty much the same. The Ultrabook, in combination with Windows 8 asks you to change some pretty basic assumptions about computing. If you're ready for the change, you're going to love it. If you're not ready to take that next step, this probably isn't the machine you're looking for.

The Spectre XT comes in a box so small that would not comfortably hold some of the power adaptors for notebook computers I've owned over the years. There is precious little in the box either. The package includes a relatively small power adaptor and the machine itself, along with a few obligatory sheets of "Quick Start" type documentation.

The computer comes in a satin-like sleeve. The documentation says it weighs just a whisper over three pounds, but I swear it feels light as a feather to me. The computer is very sleek looking. It is brushed aluminum with black plastic highlights and a black bezel around the screen. If I were judging it on design style alone, it would get an unqualified thumbs up. It is a good looking, very compact, and light as it could be.

As you face the open machine, you will find the audio, HDMI, SD card, and power ports on the right. The USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and network ports are on the left. The power switch is on the left side of the lower body just above the keyboard. One thing you won't find is an optical drive. There is no DVD or BluRay in this machine.

The screen is glossy, which could create problems for anyone sensitive to reflections. The output is clear and very sharp. I normally work with a large format laptop. My current machine has a 17" screen. So I was a little concerned about how I would adjust to a 13" display. I was very impressed. The output was so crisp the smaller text and graphics were no problem.

The keyboard is very nicely backlit and has a nice responsive feel to it. The "Beats Audio" and four built-in speakers provide sound that is well above average for a notebook. The built-in Web Cam is nicely designed and works well. Battery life is so-so at an estimated five hours per charge.

It takes this machine all of 10 seconds to boot up....amazing! You open onto the Windows 8 Metro screen. If you own an ipod touch, ipad or iphone it will look and act very familiar. The glidepad allows for the same types of manipulation as the Apple IOS.

As you will soon discover, booting will pretty much be a thing of the past. Windows 8 along with the Spectre XT just goes to sleep between sessions. With basically no moving parts, standby power consumption is nearly zero, as is your wait time. Just hit the power button and you are nearly instantly ready to get to work. Loading programs feels more like switching between open applications, it is just that quick.

How you plan to use this machine will, in large part, determine how satisfied you are with it. The Spectre XT 13-2150nr and it's Windows 8 operating system want you to think of them as a mobile device. The tiny hard drive(less than 100GB of usable space) and the lack of an optical drive, mean you will be downloading "apps" from an app store in order to work. The system comes with MS Office 2010 installed, but you will have to buy a license in order to use it. The designers of the computer and Windows 8 obviously intend you to keep most of your storage in the "cloud" and stream most media.

This is not going to work as a desktop replacement for many applications. No video or high detail photo editing. No serious design or coding work. This machine is designed for on-the-go communication, writing, streaming and playing. If that sounds like what you're looking for this little machine is slick, sleek and lightning fast.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY 13-2150nr Spectre XT 13.3" Ultrabook (Silver)

I received this lovely ultrabook by UPS today and the track pad worked well enough for me to register my ultrabook and add my Microsoft Student Teacher with speed and ease I might add; I was a bit scared because I read the mumbo jumbo previous people left about this laptop and I started to second guess my decision. I am just a regular student that owned a previous HP but the hard drive broke and my IT guy at worked told me it would be better just to upgrade my situation. He started to tell me about the SSD hard drive and how this was the new technology that I needed to be up to date in computer technology. So I shopped around and found this one this one with all the features I needed on Amazon. I am in my class now writing this review and I love the touch of the keys the backlighting (although my IT says that its just cosmetic, not a necessity!! But HEY, he's a guy!! lol) It comes with this suede like holder it will not get scratched or smeared. OH and the beats By Dre, the idiot at Best Buy said there is no difference unless I plug it into output speakers, but let me tell you, when you play Pandora, it is just like the headphones, and I say this because you can actually hear words that you can not hear on your phone. WONDERUL!! If you are not from the GEEK Squad, you will be pleased with this purchased and as far as the fan, I do not have that problem but I hope you know you are not suppose to have this on your comforter on your bed, it needs to be on a flat surface like a desk or a portable one. I'm sure the computer geeks were aware but just in case some of us civilians were not!! Happy hunting, this one is a winner winner... you know the rest

I got this on sale on Amazon for 699.99. Everywhere this thing is selling for 999.99 or so, so I have to thank Amazon for having an ultra cheap price. It is packaged great too, I felt like I was opening something that was built with care and love upon opening.

As you see from the reviews this is a stable 4-star reviewed laptop. It's not the best of it's field, but it excels more than most in it's field. Plus the price is not in the 1000s like a MacBook or other SpectreXT models are.

It's extremely fast, once I got rid of the bloatware I was getting a 4-5 second reboot on high performance. Which is beyond extraordinary for anything 'PC' related. Battery life is great so far, HP site says "up to 5 hours" in battery life, which is low for an "ultra" book. Which probably explains the price a little bit. But for a user like me, I am not too worried and I did my research before buying.

This is not a touch screen laptop, which is what I wanted. It is perfectly optimized for a mouse too, which is nice.

Pros:

+ 120GB SSD*

+ 1600 DDR3 4GB RAM (surprised they used 1600 and not 1333, a big plus in my book)

+ Extremely fast boot time

+ back-lit keyboard

+ perfect keyboard for typing in my opinion, similar to a MacBook

+ it's just plain gorgeous looking

+ sound is great

+ touch-pad is outstanding

+ 3rd gen i5 is quick and responsive with Windows 8

+ screen has an amazing image

Cons:

battery life on high performance can certainly drain the battery (like all laptops)

* the SSD is a 120GB model, but formatted it's around ~113. However, the recovery drive takes ~20GB of space, and the OS and everything you need takes another 30GB. So in reality you are only getting 60-70GB of free space to use; even after bloat ware is gone. Take that with extreme caution.

I am not completely sold on Windows 8 yet with ultrabooks. Luckily you can press the Windows button and it goes into a Windows 7 like OS for easier use. I find Windows 8 is better suited for tablets and phones.

Please all, do your research before buying. Below I attached the official specs page of the 2150-nr. Please read, it's much more informative than the Amazon page. Thanks

Purchased this Asus Laptop as it seemed to be an excellent configuration for the price. Mine came with 8GB and not the 6GB listed. Screen is nice and bright, It is speedy and easy to use. Setup was a breeze. The keyboard has a really nice touch. Not liking the Windows 8 all that much so I installed "Classic Shell" and it made it much easier to use and gives me time to play with Windows 8 when I have time. Great Value for the price.

I bought an option with 6GB RAM, and so far it is doing good. GrAphics are good, speed is satisfactory. Battery life is less than I expected tough, realistically it lasts for about 3,5 hours. W8 is a bit annoying to get used to, but performance of this configuration is pretty good. The only downside are speakers that are really bad, but thats expected in laptops, and is a small price to pay for configuration as good as this one.

The real product name of this laptop, as shown in BIOS and in Windows System Information, is Dell N5010. For its price, this is a good laptop, but it can also piss you off if you are peculiar about things:

1. For no reason at all, the fan will ramp up and whir every 2-3 minutes for about 20 seconds, even if there is no spike in CPU load. This can become really annoying in a quiet environment, such as a classroom or library. I've updated to the latest BIOS (A12), and the problem is still there. One possible way to fix this is using a tool called "i8kfangui", but installing it on Win7 requires some hackery (see the forums on its site).

2. For a 15.6" screen, the resolution is low: 1366x768. Business laptops have standard 1400x900 for 14" screens. I've had one for years and that resolution was great for the screen size. The screen is glossy and will reflect light. Outdoors, it's almost impossible to see anything, unless you hunch over the screen to shade it. POOR vertical viewing angles. 20 degree off the perpendicular direction to the screen, colors begin to shift visibly: whiteout if you look at the screen from above, darkened if you look from a bit below.

3. The keyboard can be really annoying:

silly reassignment of Fn keys to perform laptop-specific functions (volume up/down, Wi-Fi on/off etc.) instead of doing those by pressing Fn+F#. Configurable from the BIOS though.

besides that, the F# keys are labeled a faint blue on black, and are barely visible in a well-lit room. The reflection of the screen on the glossy laptop finish near the hinge doesn't help. The visible labeling is for the laptop function keys (Wi-fi on/off, brightness up/down etc.). This shows how the laptop is aimed at those who don't know what F5 does.

odd placement of the PrintScreen key between Insert and Delete

narrow trackpad buttons, often annoying to hit with the thumb

the arrow keys are too thin, half the height of normal keys

after having used laptops without a numeric keypad for the past few years, the keypad is not only useless; it gets in the way. where I expect Backspace to be, there's now Keypad Minus.

there is no Break key (useful for Win+Break to get the Windows System properties, or Ctrl+Break in command line applications)

there is no context menu key (equivalent to right click on the focused control)

So make sure these things don't bother you, or you'll hate the laptop. Try to get a feel for the keyboard and trackpad at a local store (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Fry's etc.)

I bought this product, it is fast, however the support is horrible. The DVD player has never workers right freezes up even out of the box When I called dell, I got the run around and the long and short of it is that Dell doesn't stand behind their products. The Wi-fi is hit or miss, lucky it works well at home , but at work it doesn't connect and on public networks on the road it is hit or miss on getting a connection.

The unit is a bit of an energy hog, as the battery life doesn't last anything close to what Dell claims. Dell's answer was that I should buy the more expensive battery! The Battery lasts about an hour and a half, with all the power settings set to decrease energy use, and screen brightness turned down.

I would find another brand, Sad since otherwise it is a great computer.

My brother has this laptop, and overall, it is a decent computer. It has a good CPU, a good GPU, and good RAM. There's plenty of upgrade options, as the FSB can handle faster (and more) RAM, and the CPU and GPU are readily upgradeable as well. The major problem is that ASUS didn't design the cooling well. The fan does not have any direct air flow from the bottom of the case and over the heatsinks. It sucks the air from small holes and slots all around the computer's base and then expells it over the heatsinks, instead of standard cooling systems where the fan has a big hole under it for direct air flow. The idea was to make the fan cool the entire system: the disk drive and HDD, the RAM, the mother board, and the battery. But this just results in hot air being blown over already hot heatsinks, and what's more is that there is very litte air flow as it is. There is a mod that can be done where you cut a hole out from under the fan, and this does help to cool it down (I know, I did it to my brother's G50VT). But the temps still skyrocket to well above acceptable temps. Playing Team Fortress 2 we saw 80C plus. I have to say that this is a good computer, but Asus greatly missed the mark in cooling.

Ok, this is the fastest laptop I have ever owned. I actually bought the one with the p7450 2.13GHz, but I upgraded to the P8700 myself. I bought a Refurbished Asus G50VT.

With Vista on it is ok, but with Windows 7 on it its awesome. It can play Far Cry 2 and Call Of Duty MW2 on the highest settings. When playing these games, the video card got to 86C after an hour. My frame rate was in the High 20s mid 30s on the highest settings. The hottest the CPU ever got was 72C. Before I upgraded the CPU, it would idle at in the mid 30s(C). After I upgraded it and used Antec Formula 5 it now idles at 27-29C. The GPU idles at 42C and gets to around 50-55 while surfing the net or watching a video. This laptop runs cool compared to other laptops.

Some people have asked if it can handle 8GB of ram. After little research I found that it can take up to 8GB of memory. 8GB (2x4GB) on eBay costs about $240. Now for battery life.

On power save with the screen on the dimmest I get about 3-3.5 hours of life. Some people think that the light and design on the lid look bad, but I think it looks cool. I just wish that you could turn them off sometimes. Hard drive transfers at about 22 MBPS with Windows 7.

Overall its an excellent laptop. I paid $700 for mine on eBay. 5 Star Laptop!

Pros:

Fast Processor

Good Video Card

Big HDD

Long Battery Life

Fast Wireless Card

Excellent frame rates in latest games

Runs very cool

Cons

Lid Design looks bad to some

Screen slightly low resolution

Can't put a quad core in it

I bought this when I needed a laptop for class, mainly because I needed a laptop, tablets weren't in existence, and I played quite a few PC games, as there is just some things tablets can't yet replace a laptop for. This thing handled everything I could throw at it, and still does. I later bought a second hard drive, a 320gb, for music and movies etc, to put in the second hard drive slot already included, which is an amazing feature by the by! The factory over clocking is great, and if you install the drivers, the graphics card will run as a m9800gt! Overall I have had this for a few years now and it is still running strong, Asus makes great products, and has one of the lowest hardware failure rates on the market.

Honest reviews on Asus G50Vt-X5-RF Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz, 4GB

The G50Vt-X5 is quite a powerful beast of a laptop. Mine doesn't quite match the configuration at the top of the page, and more resembles the one in the description (2.15GHz). It handles games exceptionally well with the GeForce 9800M GS video card, and is quite upgradeable and expandable for a laptop. The built-in overclocking is pretty handy if you need a little more "oomph", and it handles this overclocking safely since it's part of ASUS's own software suite.

This computer has been one of the best I've owned. I'm not kidding. The only negative is that it's big. It's not a "bring it with you everywhere" kind of laptop. It's a little on the large & heavy side with the battery installed, and it might as well be a 17" system, despite the screen being 15.4" (1680x1050), because it does not fit in 15" laptop bags. You need one designed for 16" or bigger. All this size means it can run with more power, more features, and better cooling for that dedicated gaming-level graphics card.

Despite these minor negatives, the system is a joy to use. Stable, sturdy as a rock, and blazing fast-even in games! HDMI out makes this a great home entertainment center, too. Plenty of USB ports, a firewire port, an SD card reader, a second hard drive bay, surround sound output via TOSlink (requires an adapter), and even a keypad make this a laptop for people who don't want to give up all the good things about desktop PCs. It also runs Windows 7 64-bit like a champ, and ASUS has all the updated drivers for Windows 7 on their website. Oh, and with the power off, you can instantly pop into a simple LINUX-style OS with the touch of a button if you don't feel like going into Windows for some reason.

If you're up to it, you can even upgrade the CPU. That's pretty awesome for a laptop. Every laptop I had before this one wouldn't allow it. ASUS built this system for gamers, and it shows. Heck, when you turn it on, the "Republic of Gamers" logo goes BOOM! on the screen before you even get to the BIOS.

I've been 100% happy with this system. It's not as good as a desktop, perhaps (which is why I eventually chose to part with mine) but it's as good as it gets for a gaming PC under a thousand bucks.

First I must say that I had the G50Vt-X1. It's video died, and I could no longer get a card that fit it. (Planned obsolescence sucks!) I ordered this one to replace it. I put my two hard drives in it and my ram sticks.

It has worked perfectly! I use it everyday for gaming, even dualboxing in windowed mode, etc. Never a problem!

I would purchase this item for myself if I were in the market for a new laptop.

I got this computer to replace a similar computer that crashed. It works even better than the previous one, and I am thrilled that I got such a great deal on a computer. It was on sale for significantly less than the retail price, which made it one of the least expensive computers on Amazon at the time, and close to half the price of my previous computer. Perfect for me! Just keep in mind that it only has microsoft word and excel for free the entire office suite does not come with this computer.

Pros: price, seem very well built, keyboard, size/convience. When it was working, it was fast and ran very smooth.

The Issues: After about 4 weeks it would not boot. I sent it off to Dell service center and they needed to replace the motherboard, hard drive, audio board and reinstall Windows 8. Not sure what the exact issue was and Dell support has been somewhat vague. When the laptop was returned an administrator profile was setup and it would not allow me to create a profile. I was on the phone with tech support for over an hour for them to tell me the OS needs reset/put back on the computer properly (not sure why this was not fixed properly before sending back to me). Anyway they want me to buy an external disk drive and install Windows 8 again.

Overall I'm very pleased with the build of the laptop and wish that it would work.

UPDATE: I sent the laptop back and was given a refund. I do not recommend buying this laptop because of the 4 weeks issues (will not boot). I have found several other reviews stating the same issues as mine. It appears Dell's quality has lowered. I was also not pleased with the customer support.

Seriously. Not a month of use, and the motherboard is dead. It can't identify a boot device. Been on chat with a (friendly, thank goodness) Dell rep who is sending a tech to replace the motherboard. I hope this is a one-time problem. My previous Dells have fared far better...

UPDATE: A couple of months have passed since the comment above and I'm less frustrated with this computer. Dell actually did the right thing and sent a tech to look at and fix the laptop. He replaced the motherboard and everything is working okay now. The tech met me at work and fixed the computer before the end of my day, so it was very convenient. Well done Dell, I'm pleasantly surprised. Now I just hope the computer keeps working (it's great when it does...)

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i13z-8864sLV 13-Inch Laptop

This laptop looked good out at first. It is definitely not a high end product, but then one would not expect this at this price. Things got bad after just a few weeks though as it would no longer boot. I tried to resolve the issue with Dell technical support, but this took so long to do that I returned the product for a replacement as suggested by Amazon. Great service from Amazon, and poor show from Dell. I am told the issue is due to an incompatibility issue between the Windows 8 updates (which the machine downloads automatically once switched on) and the hardware. I am ordering a second laptop like this one an hope to have more luck with it next time.

Update: despite having been sourced from a different supplier, the second laptop failed after just a few days and would not boot. Exactly the same problem as with the first laptop. I tried to resolve the issue with Dell technical support, but this proved to be really frustrating. The technical centre is based in India and the telephone line kept dropping. I had to call 5 times, which was really infuriating because I had to start from scratch each time (warranty code, laptop model, my name, description of the problem, etc). Very disappointingly, Dell could not fix the problem over the phone, and wanted the product returned to them for servicing this would have taken weeks. It was much easier and quicker to return the laptop to Amazon for a refund. Not impressed at all by Dell, I think there are better choices. Do not buy this product.

I have heard of others complaining about the technical support from Dell. It is obvious the staff in the technical support centre are not technical at all, they are just people working to a script. I think they are doing the best job they can, but the support they can offer is limited, and the script makes the whole process very time consuming and cumbersome, especially if like me you had to call back 5 times because the call dropped. I spent over 1 hour on the phone dealing with the first laptop, and well over 2 hours dealing with the second one. Might have been OK if they had offered a resolution, but they did not, so I had to return both laptops anyway.

I like the size and performance of the computer. I like typing on the keyboard. The touchpad is integrated into the palmrest so there aren't any cracks to collect dirt and crumbs.

I installed an SSD in mine. Be aware, that as this is in the "ultrabook" category, you need a 7mm thick hard drive, where as standard 2.5" drives are 9.5mm thick or so. I also installed Windows 7 and it works great. Dell offers drivers on their website. The label on the bottom identifies this as an Inspiron 5323.

The port covers are annoying. I'd rather have functionality over aesthetics. They open just far enough to connect my mouse, but it would just be better if they weren't there, but that is the worst thing I have to say about the computer.
