This laptop does not come with ram, hard drive, or cpu. It uses a G2 socket cpu and sandy bridge seems to work just fine. If your WIFI doesn't seem to work i recommend switching the two wires. Mine came with the wifi already installed but the cables were backwards.

The screen is 1080p resolution.
Overall the laptop is a bargain considering the powerful graphics card it comes with. I recommend this laptop to anyone who has opened up their laptop in the past and knows the parts. Very easy installation getting the missing parts would be the hard part. I used a preowned Intel Mobile Core i7 i7-2630QM for cpu.

I received a few week ago and here are my thoughts.
Overall I'm very happy with it.
It is as powerful as I would have hoped. I can play far cry 3, Hitman Absolution, Max Payne 3 etc (All quite graphically intense games) at ultra spec and it doesn't skip a beat.
Thanks to the RAID 0 SSD's it boots up to the log in screen in 6 secs (!) and all programs will boot up almost instantly.
The battery life is actually quite impressive. 4 hours of game time while on a plane, which is pretty impressive considering.
It has plenty of ports. 3 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0. It even has all the plugs required to run a surround sound system directly from the laptop.
It's pretty light for what it is I think. It's pretty bulky, don't get me wrong. But I can still put this in my laptop rucksack and travel with it comfortably. I had read that the power brick was huge. Maybe they have changed it recently, maybe. I was lead to believe it was the size of a house brick. It's not. Don't get me wrong, it's bigger than normal. But's totally manageable.
When I get home I can put the laptop under the TV, plug it into everything and leave it there. Control of it done via the built in bluetooth.
The bad things are
1)It doesn't sometimes feel a bit flimsy. Nothing has broken, but it just doesn't feel as solid as I would like (I travel a lot and take this with me)
2)Windows 8. Windows is annoying to get used to. But I suppose it's a bullet we're all going to have to bite at some point. When I plugged in my wireless Microsoft mouse. It installed some software for it. At which point my touch pad isn't working anymore (And my keyboard temporarily for some reason, (That was scary :/ )).
I've tried to re-install the touch pad drivers that came with the laptop, but It still won't work.
It's not a major issue because I just use the wireless mouse, but it's still annoying.
I'm 99% sure that this is a windows 8 problem and the touch pad itself is fine.
I (Touch wood) haven't had a problem with the laptop itself so far, and I am very pleased with it. But bare in mind that the MSI customer service is rumored to be really bad. So keep that in mind.

I got my MSI computer in today, I have to say it is an amazing PC. So far i have installed WOW, SCII, LOL and all run fine with graphics turned all the way up! It is a beast of a laptop does not feel like you will break it by mistake! The keyboard rocks! Only negative about it is WINDOWS 8! Hate windows 8. Generally speaking an excellent desktop replacement for work that will run current games. MSI appears to cut less corners than its competitors when it comes to quality components; however, it comes at a slight price increase. In particular, the cooling is far better than advertised.Only real complaint other than bloatware is the left control key which fell off immediately upon first use and took me days to find a way to reattach (although somewhat imperfectly) and continues to feel fragile.

I needed a new laptop to take the place of my aging Apple Mac Airbook. Sure there is a major size difference, but I have been very pleased with the performance. Intense games, large data sets, etc. are no problem for this monster! Yes. You do have to pay a little more for it, but this laptop is definitely worth the money!

Review of Sony VAIO YB Series VPCYB33KX/P 11.6-Inch Laptop (Pink)
Ive been looking all over for a small portable laptop to replace my old vaio. My older one was a 15.6in, so anything smaller would have been great. This one I feel is just as good as my older vaio. With the exception of the smaller processor than my older one. Still, the computer runs smoothly and qucikly. The grapics are great (LED), The keyboard will take some getting used to, since its smaller its more squashed. If you have already used a netbook before you should be fine with the keyboard size. For me, being the size of a netbook and getting all the amenities of a laptop sold me. Ive found most laptops this size are more expensive, so finding one at this price with what I needed was great. If your an AutoCad user, AutoCad will run on this, plus, with it being portable, you can take it with you to work or a job site easier. All in all, the other con I have to say is I wish the processor size would have been bigger, but for what I need it for (AutoCad, word processing, internet, music, etc) it works for me.

The portability of the laptop is very good. As expected, the performanace is very average. Also, it is very inconvenient that there is no optical drive. The sony external optical drive is not compatible with the device as the device does not have an ilink port, which is a very stupid design. I tried many cables and could not make it work. I bought this laptop two weeks ago, it is really light and looks nice, which can satisfy what I need, but there are some problems I am not satisfied with. First of all, the battery's life is not what offcial website states. In fact, the battery life is only about 4 hours if the brightness is moderate and connecting wireless. Furthemore, the price is relatively expensive. The price I wish to pay for is about 420~450 dollars. I was happy when it arrived. But I got a little sad and surprised when I opened it, it was small as what I did not expect it to be. However, it looks nice. I can carry everywhere. Computer has decent and power oriented configuration with a intel i5 M480 (2.67GH), so it is not your run of the mill laptop, LED 15.6" screen, large HD, etc.
Then bad: the case and encasement is made of cheap plastic and feels cheap and flimsy; the touch-pad button feels really cheap with only one large non-responsive button; the keyboard is good enough.
Now the worse: for the hardware (an i5 M480) it is a low price machine at around $450 (sale price), but it is by now means a low end laptop; so how can it be explained that such machine did not even come with a LED for the CAPS LOCK key. Not even a $200 netbook will come without a LED for the CAPS LOCK key. 1.Fan is very noisy, well above average, very annoying. Another Acer of mine with Intel i3 CPU has negligible fan noise.2.Picture quality is ok, but if connect it to a bigger monitor, say a 21' monitor, then the picture quality is too bad, very fuzzy. I sent the machine back to Acer to repair but still very fuzzy. Probably this is because of Intel HD Graphics chip.
3.No HDMI output which is not good if you want to hook it to a TV
4.When you type something on the screen, like I am now typing the comment on this computer, the cursor can suddenly jump to another location, very annoying.

Review of HP ProBook 4545s 15.6" Inch Notebook PC, AMD Dual-Core A6-4400M
Purchased this 4545s ProBook at TigerDirect, $500, using Amazon for their gurarantee's 12/25/12.
Bought because: value for the money, non-gloss screen, both Windows 7 pro and Windows 8 operating systems included.
Works well.
Spent some time uninstalling the not needed "extras" HP supplied. Going to have to talk with Microsoft about product key because there is no COA on this machine.
One irritating point: touchpad was a bit centered for tapping. You have to tap more toward the center of the pad than other laptops. I "fixed" this by uninstalling the HP touchpad software. It becomes "normal". If you want the two finger stuff, go over to Synaptics and get the latest download.
Will report back when/if there is anything more to report.
Purchased it for my Freshmen College student. She is thrilled, as are the rest of the family. The only problem is it Doesn't seem to Come Pre Loaded with Office 2010 as described. So now I must spend additional money that I wasnt prepared to spend.
Aside from that. The silver finish is sharp. The audio is OK. I Was looking for anti Glare & this display is excellent IMO. We have owned several Laptops but this is our 1st HP. So far the kids have played DVD's, CD's, downloaded their favorite music and Skyped. Everything working perfectly. The Camera was awesome.
Only have it up and running for a little over a day but so far no complaints. At a sub $500 purchase price. This seems to be an excellent choice for my New College student. Just wish it came with Office 2010 as described.
EDITED REVIEW 08/10/13. Well after being so excited over this laptop. The bottom dropped out. Hard drive crashed within a week. Went thru the drill with HP tech only to be told to send it back to where I purchased it. Tigerdirect was terrific during the return process.
I decide to re-purchase the same computer. Two cant be bad! No not two in a row. 2nd laptop arrived lightning fast. Turned on the computer and it seemed to respond perfectly. Unfortunately over the next day or so. All the same problems began to arise.
The DVD slot had 2 be forced open. It took longer and longer 2 boot up.(up to several minutes) None of the USB ports were recognized. The speed of the computer slowed to a snails pace. Over and over it Constantly loaded upgrades. Something went wrong every time we booted it up. Spent another hr with HP tech going thru the drills. Guess what? Same thing! Hard Drive NG. The HP tech told me 2 send it back 2 the store.
Sent 2nd unit back. Again Tigerdirect.com was terrific but Im finished with this HP 4545s ProBook. Price was right. Specs were right. Didnt work. So disappointed.

Great laptop and Tigerdirect is a great company. They are responsive if there is an issue and want you to get your product and this product is great. Fast loading, good screen resolution. I love this computer. It has so many little extras such as a fingerprint log in. So cool. I have had no problems with it at all. It runs fast and the fan is not loud at all like on my other lap top. Not being a technologically advanced person, I knew I wanted to snatch up a Windows 7 before it is too late. But, I thought I also might want update this computer to Windows 8 at a later date. This computer offered both and I thought that would be a nice option. I will never load Windows 8 on this computer. I now know you have to have a touch screen to make Windows 8 user-friendly. This computer does not have that. This is a large computer in my opinion. It has a large screen and keyboard and is pretty heavy. I received this laptop as my graduation present almost a year ago. To help anyone looking for that right laptop, I will share my own experiences with this HP dv6-6047cl.
My parents and I thought a laptop would be a good graduation gift, something I can carry through college, work, and lifes many adventures. While myself being a big gamer, I looked for best gaming laptop I could find in the price range. I spent a month on research, looking at specs, features and benchmark results for popular games. I really couldn't decide, until my dad showed my this laptop being sold at Sam's Club. I looked at all the specs online and thought it would be an awesome deal. In the end this is what I ended up receiving.
Enough with the story!
On to the features! First off, this laptop looks sexy. Very clean, very light, but a finger-print magnet. The keyboard feels very comfortable to type with, and comes with a full-sized num-pad. The up and down arrow keys are very small, but still totally functional (I got 250,000 points in Starcraft 2 Lost Viking mini-game with them lol). The track-pad is your average laptop mouse, nothing special. It comes with a finger-print scanner, but I have never used it. The display is small (1366x768) but very sharp. I have yet to find a good way to clean it however :( The HP Beats Audio is an awesome feature, you can notice a huge difference in audio quality when Beats is on. The battery life is pretty average for a laptop. After a year, it can still run about 3-4 hours surfing the internet with power saver settings. If your running anything intense, you will need to plug-in (as the case with every laptop). This laptop usually idles 20-40 celsius. When playing games, the highest I have seen it go is 80 celsius.
On to the games! The laptop comes with amd radeon hd6770M (for gaming) and an integrated graphics GPU (not for gaming). Here is a list of some games I have run: Skyrim on high runs around 30 fps outdoors (lower in the forest areas) and 40-50 fps indoors. Starcraft 2 on ultra runs above 30 fps except during the most intense high food battles. Borderlands runs seamless at the highest settings. Crysis on high/ultra (with shaders medium) runs close to 30 fps. Overall this laptop handled everything I have thrown at it! I doubt there is a game today that this can't handle to at least medium settings.
The only problem I have had with this laptop happens during long game-sessions. When the graphics card gets very hot, and I try to minimize to the desktop, the screen goes black for a second and comes back (though 20% of the time I have to hard restart) and I get this message "The display driver has stopped working and has recovered" I have yet to find a solution for this, but I have found a work-around. Most of the games today support windowed mode, and I have yet to have this problem when a game is in windowed mode.
To sum everything up, this laptop perfect for the price. Great keyboard, good battery life, excellent gaming ability, and a very compact design. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a laptop in the mid price range. You can't beat it!

I Have Done quite some Research before buying this laptop and i must say that i am super happy with it for 650 bucks your not going to find a laptop with Gpu Power like this one. It runs Most game at ultra high and high. High end games like skyrim and bf3 it runs at medium perfectly fine. I'm Playing dishonored and it runs it al maxed setting at 30 to 60fps. The Beats is also a plus boost headphones sooo much. This laptop is already Great but if you want to make it future proof and boost it from fast to super fast? I ordered this laptop on Thursday and just in 1 day, it was delivered in a perfect condition. Didn't have the chance to see every feature, but I can say that I loved this PC at first sight.. Looks so solid, not like some others giving you a feeling that they will break down if you don't be very careful. Only problem for now seems to be the touch pad. I can say that its little bit sticky, hard to move the cursor precisely.. Also, left and right click buttons are really hard to press. Clicking means really clicking for this laptop !!! Don't hesitate to buy, perfect item for its price. But make sure you order a nice mice too..
Now, after using the PC for a few days, I m happy to see that the touch pad buttons are getting easier to press. Finger print reader and Hp Simple Pass application that allows you to use your fingerprint instead of entering usernames and passwords works very well. Swipe your finger once and all the websites you enrolled in fingerprint system shows up. Swipe it once more, you are logged on in seconds. No Username No Password..
Also, some want just the Windows 7 OS! This is easily done by pressing the F11 key during boot up. You will then go into the Recovery console and choose the one on the left that says "Minimal Install". After you reboot the only thing on the laptop will be the Windows 7 premium (64bit) OS and I checked in device manager and everything is working!
As noted above the F11 key that kicks off the HP recovery console is a very nice feature but another is the one built into Windows 7 called "Backup" (type in Backup in the search when in Windows). Choose to create a "System Image" and have a portable USB/eSata hdd ready. You can then save the image to that drive in case of disaster. At the end of the System Image creation make sure you create the System Repair CD. The System Repair CD will be used to restore the "System Image" if you ever need to. This is very usefull after you get the laptop loaded and customized with all the software that you want.
The touch pad, don't be so quick to judge. Look in the control panel for the touchpad control and try a few different options. The all-in-one touchpad works fine for me.

HD died and was replaced on 03/22/10.
HD died and was replaced on 05/24/10.
Integrated mouse broke 08/22/10
HD died 11/12/10 parts and laptop are out of warranty
Replacement parts have a 90 days warranty.
Tech support in India is not allowed to connect me to a manager
or refer me back to a customer support department in the US.
They do want me to sign up for extended care for another $200/year
but even if it were free who would want to go through this type of
ordeal. Every support call takes between 60 and 90mns.
Now, after using the PC for a few days, I m happy to see that the touch pad buttons are getting easier to press. Choose to create a "System Image" and have a portable USB/eSata hdd ready. You can then save the image to that drive in case of disaster. At the end of the System Image creation make sure you create the System Repair CD. The System Repair CD will be used to restore the "System Image" if you ever need to. This is very usefull after you get the laptop loaded and customized with all the software that you want.
The touch pad, don't be so quick to judge. Look in the control panel for the touchpad control and try a few different options. The all-in-one touchpad works fine for me.

Buyer Beware. I purchased a HP Pavilion laptop with a Windows 7 Professional operating system in March 2010. The hard drive crashed while the system was under warranty in September 2010. I discovered the external Seagate backup drive performed a selective backup instead of a complete backup, backing up only 18 GB out of 200 GB of data. According to one computer repair technician, many of the files were still readable on the defective HP drive. I then decided to replace the hard drive myself at my cost and reload the OS, only to learn that HP "tatoos" their drives preventing anyone from replacing the drive with anything other than the exact same drive from HP. Without the tatoo, I could not reload my operating system which came from HP. HP quoted me a price over $300 for the HP replacement "tatooed? hard drive. Identical drives without the tatoo cost approximately 1/3 the price of the HP drive. As I had already purchased a hard drive from a local "big chain" computer repair shop, I decided to obtain a new copy of Windows 7 Professional and just reload the operating system. Again, I learned that this also does not work. HP informed me that they would give me a replacement hard drive only after I gave them my original hard drive. Since I first needed a computer with the Windows 7 operating system installed to transfer the recoverable data files from the bad drive to a good drive and then to securely erase data on the the old drive, this was not an acceptable option. HP tech support failed miserably during this process since the HP technician (who had a heavy India English accent) told me that I had to go back to the computer store where I purchased the hard drive and have them fix the system. It took four weeks for me to discover that ONLY HP could fix the laptop. I did take the laptop back to the place of purchase. They experienced the same problem in attempting to get HP to fix the laptop. The computer has been broken now for seven weeks. While the HP laptop operated okay (not great, just OK) when it worked, I discovered that HP laptops are simply no longer repairable unless you bite the bullet and allow HP to make the repairs at an incredibly high price. In reviewing prior laptop purchases, I realized that ALL of my prior HP laptops had broken after a year or so and that the other brands of laptops I purchased while old and banged up from use continued to operate. or refer me back to a customer support department in the US.
They do want me to sign up for extended care for another $200/year
but even if it were free who would want to go through this type of

I just got this laptop as a gift. It looks very cool and it is very thin. I so want to keep it but the track pad is driving me crazy. It is very hard to use and it's already causing me finger pain on my second day. The cursor jumps around as I am typing on the keyboard, but when I do need to use the track pad to scroll up and down, it is half dead. Very very frustrating to use. Another thing I hate about this laptop is the monitor. The colors appear strangely purplish and it is nearly impossible to see details if the colors are light. Buy HP Pavilion DV7-1240US 17.0-Inch Laptop
I first saw this computer at Sam's Club (eventually where I bought it too) and was completely infatuated. This laptop delivers amazing value for the price. HP has definately brought their 'A' game on this model. There are a couple things you *need* to know before you buy this laptop.
First, the model I bought advertised a 500 GB hard drive. This is true, however it is 2 x 250 GB hard drives. Not that big of a deal, but I cannot believe it is not listed as such.
Second, the laptop comes preloaded with a ton of junk and is heavily integrated with Windows Live stuff. Messenger, Live toolbar, etc. It comes with a trial of Norton Internet Security and a trial of Office 2007. My advice: Get Norton off the computer ASAP and install another anti-virus product.
Third, no operating system CD's come with the package. There is a "Recovery" partition that contains about 12 GB of stuff (not 100% sure what exactly is on there). I do know that when setting up the computer it tells you you should create recovery CD's. I went through the setup to create the discs and here's the kicker they want 21 CD's or 3 DVD's to create the recovery discs. Talk about stupid.
As of now, I have wiped the OS partition and loaded Windows 7 Beta. The driver recognition is fantastic on Windows 7 both my wired and wireless ethernet drivers were install out-of-the-box.
The look and feel of this model is gorgeous. The 17" HD screen is amazing and the whole laptop has this slick look and feel to it. The bronze color scheme really stands out.
All in all, you cannot beat the price of this laptop. For what it comes with, a comparable model from another vendor would cost $600-700 more than what I bought mine for ($898 + tax).
Last, this is just my opinion and should be taken as such. Please do yourself a favor and do not install XP on this. This laptop is too great to go back to XP. AERO does look nice and this laptop should be able to run anything you throw at it. Even a clean install of Vista should not give you any problems. While XP works great for most people, do not fight change and try to give Vista/7 a fair chance. Hell, even try the newest Ubuntu (I think 8.10) because that should look great on this too.
If only the letters & numbers were white against the bronze this notebook would have gotten 5 stars!
Anyone out there with this issue, and if so is there any solution besides returning it?
Everything else seems to be very good.

I returned this & purchased the DV7-1150US, very similar features in silver-gray. The keyboard is legible, black letters & numbers on silver-gray. Very nice.
This has fantastic sound for music with the Altec Lansing dual speakers on top and subwoofer on the bottom. Of course it can be hooked to a media center via the built-in HDMI or USB ports for impressive sound and Blue-ray DVD play.
Battery life is about 3 4 hours with the power management default settings out of the box.
All round this is a great package, with the few cons noted below.
Cons:
1. Bluetooth headsets / headphones don't work for listening to music. I've written to HP and visited forums, and it seems that there is some issue with MS Vista that Microsoft hasn't fixed. This is a bit disappointing, however, if you are planning to run with XP (which I'm not sure will work with this 64 bit microprocessor) it may be ok. I, as are many, awaiting a fix for this issue. Many have reported issues with Bluetooth Stack Service not working. I found that there is a Microsoft patch (something to do with ActiveX killbits), that causes this problem. After the Bluetooth stopped working correctly, and rebuilding my system I found that by not installing this "fix" the Bluetooth works for everything (phone, mp3 player, etc.), but not with the headphones for listening to music. Headphones do work for skype and with the phone.
2. The built-in Intel 5100 AGN WiFi Network adapter always indicates that its running at 54.0Mbps, even though I have a Netgear 854T Wireless-N router that can run at 300.0Mbps. If I connect a Netgear WPN121T USB adapter the HP Networking status indicates 300.0Mbps for that adapter. However, both adapters seem equally as fast for loading of webpages and downloads, so I'm not sure if the build-in Intel 5100 adapter is really running at 300.0Mbps even though it indicates on 54.0Mbps. I've been working with HP on this issue and they have not been able to fix yet.
3. The touch pad (as on all of these HPs) can act bizarrely, in that the mouse will jump to some other place when you touch the pad. It doesn't happen all of the time, but can be rather annoying. I'm not sure if it has to do with the way the notebook is leveled, but I do notice that if the keyboard is not on a stable table top or work space, the mouse jumping seems to happen more frequently. The synaptic touch pad driver sw provides some settings which seem to help.
4. Finally, the built-in cooling fan is noticably louder in the dv7-1270us than in the dv9910us models I have. Fortunately, in the BIOS it can be set to turn-on/off as needed, and not run continuously, so it's not too bad, but it pitch is at a frequency that causes my ears to ring if it runs very long.
The laptop is loaded with entertainment features like webcam, bluray, HDMI port, 4 USB ports, TWO headphone jacks and lightscribe! I will admit, the lightscribe was a huge plus. If you don't know, it's a way to laser etch artwork/words onto burned CDs/DVDs instead of using sticker labels or writing on them with permanent markers. I have no complaints with any of this stuff because these are all features I've not had until now and I'm just excited to have them at all. The laptop is blazingly fast compared to my old one (but that's not saying much). It has a neat touch bar above the keyboard that lets you quickly: mute/unmute, control volume, play, pause, forward, rewind, stop, and even turn off the wifi. It's a huge laptop, you may have a hard time finding a bag it will fit in (seriously), but it's not an issue for me. I love having such a large screen and I don't move the laptop around much (I would not have purchased a laptop this large for heavy travel). I also love that it has a full sized keyboard (YAY!) and a separate number keypad off to the right for super speedy number crunching! It has a cute little remote control so you can hook the laptop up to your TV and use it as a sometimes bluray/DVD player, it even stores in the side of the laptop when not in use. I also like that this machine doesn't seem to get hot at all...my old laptop you could fry eggs on that thing for how hot it ran!
The not so great stuff:
It comes with Vista and I don't like it, but it's not the laptop's fault, they all come with Vista now, don't they.
It has a lot of bloatware (a lot of preinstalled software that you probably don't need and just having it there takes up space and hogs memory/resources) and no easy way to remove it without doing a wipe/reinstall
...and it does not come with Vista CDs to do that which complicates things a bit.
I read a lot of reviews talking about the keys being almost unreadable, for everything else that came with this machine for this price...I was willing to paint them on myself if it was really that bad! I'm not sure if HP fixed the problem or if I'm not using the laptop in the same conditions as those with the complaints, but I can see/read them fine (I use the laptop indoors with ambient/indirect sun lighting for the most part). The keys and laptop are a metallic bronze color, so it has a bit of a mirror like finish that I could certainly do without...but it is not nearly as obnoxious/annoying/blinding as the laptops with that chrome/silver mirror finish. That's all with the aesthetics; not the important stuff (not to me anyway).
For the price and being chock full of features, I can't justify taking off a star for any of the very minor flaws. I've had this for almost a month now and I love it. I will update this review once I've had it longer should anything change or need mentioning.

I just received my very cool HP Pavilion DV7-1240US, but I can't see the letters & numbers on the keyboard. The whole laptop is bronze, including the keyboard, and the keyboard letters & numbers appear to be gray. I tried moving my reading lamp as close as possible to the laptop & I still can't make out the letters & numbers properly. I have to keep moving my head around from different angles just to see. I can't believe HP would release a product with this obvious problem...If only the letters & numbers were white against the bronze this notebook would have gotten 5 stars!
Anyone out there with this issue, and if so is there any solution besides returning it?

I got this at Best Buy for $700 and this is an excellent machine for its price. You are getting an HD monitor, built in webcam and microphone, silent keyboard which is perfectly sized for an adult, a beautiful interface, a lovely touchpad to turn up your volume, mute, play, fast forward and rewind... a 64 bit system with 4 GB of RAM capable of holding 8 GB of RAM... amazing. the mouse touchpad has a scroll function on its side. this computer has state of the art audio, (the speakers of this brand are very costly), a dedicated video graphics card, and a very powerful processor. coupled with its sleek design you cannot go wrong. its versatile, and it is very easy to set up networking. I have several HP laptops with 17" screens (dv9910us as well as this dv7-1270us). The screen size is great, but I could see that trying to carry these in a backpack for school use could be a load. The displays are fantastic and the NVidia graphics card is super. Cheap Acer Aspire 5742Z-4200 Intel Pentium P6100 2.0GHz 2GB 250GB DVDRW
Seeing as there is not many reviews on this, and I happen to own one, I figured I would give my opinion on this laptop.
I got this laptop as a Christmas present in 2010 to use for general use and college in 2011. This laptop, so far, has held up very well.
The only minor difference between my exact model is that it came with a 300GB HDD and 3GB of ram(which I have upgraded to 6GB).
The laptop is excellent and quick in every day tasks, unfortunately it is now beginning to show some age. I have the free version of Microsoft Office and it can take upwards of 30-40 seconds on first time load (Restarts will go much quicker).
For everyday computing, this will be a good laptop. The screen is very crisp given the resolution. Web surfing and web games are quick and offer no problems.
For reliability, I can see this has been the most reliable, trouble-free computer I've owned. Granted, I take good care of it. It has had only one minor failure when booting one day, then the problem disappeared.
For gaming, you may want to look elsewhere. This laptop CAN game on older games, I can't say the same for newer though.
I regularly play Minecraft, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, and other similar games.
Minecraft will play decently on this laptop, provided you install Optifine and set the graphics mostly to low. I get about 15-30 frames-per-second depending on what's happening.
Left 4 Dead 2: EVERYTHING on low I average about 15-20 fps. Which is decently playable.
Team Fortress 2: Everything on low I get anywhere from 10-30 fps depending on game type. (Man Vs Machine is a FPS killer)
In conclusion, this game will be a good buy for those who do general web surfing or low power apps and maybe the occasional game. However, this is a 2-3 year old budget laptop that is reaching the end of it's life. A year or two ago I would have given this 4 stars, however. It's still a very good computer for those who do light computing, but anything higher than the games I mention will probably not be worthwhile. This computer was not built for that, and is deteriorating rather quickly in today's market.
Don't get me wrong, the laptop is good. Just not good enough given the current price. (350$ for a used, 400+ refurbished) If you're looking for a better laptop to game on, or do anything graphically intense; I recommend going AMD. Their integrated cards are much better than Intel's.

I bought this Acer in need of a large screen for living in Ecuador. I immediately loaded Ubuntu 10.3 on the system. It runs like a dream and never crashes as my HP did before. With a 15.6 inch screen, you will have more than enough desktop space. The memory screams with Linux as a motor. I like the large keyboard for typing, with big fingers, it surely helps. Reviews of Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 20994CU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dawn Gray)
****UPDATE***** I found out why this computer takes a while to connect to the internet. Apparently the Mcafee anti-virus program trial is the culprit. After the trial ended, I immediately uninstalled it and installed the free Avast program and this computer connects to the internet quickly. Shame on Mcafee.
This lenovo y580 is one of the entry models of the y580 series. This one does not have 1080p, blue ray, or a solid state drive. With that said, I knew that before buying this laptop. I don't own blue ray movies and don't care much for 1080p screen so I went for this laptop anyway. This laptop is amazing for the price. I paid $799.99 for it and for a laptop with one of the latest high end i7 ivy bridge processors equipped with a Nvidia GTX 660, there's nothing out there that can beat it. I've searched for a laptop for months and I have yet to see a laptop with the same processor and dedicated graphics for $800. This laptop can run battlefield on high settings without any hickups. If you plan to buy this laptop, I highly recommend installing a solid state drive if you want everything to load faster.

There is an old saying in the auto racing community; Fast, Cheap, Reliable, pick two. This definitely applies to Lenovo y580. It is cheap, fast and unreliable. I have had the laptop for a little over 3 days and have already started calling it the "Crash Pad". The main problem seems to be the nvidia GTX 660m. The card is extremely unstable. It will crash in just about every application. I have tried 3 different nvidia drivers and as I type this am downloading a 4th beta driver to try and solve the problem.
It appears to me that the root of the problem lies in the laptop trying to switch between the integrated graphics and the nvidia dedicated card. When playing a game the card will run for about 5 mins if you are lucky, then artifact all over the place and crash to desktop. It acts like it has been overclocked too far and is unstable.
To even get the laptop to use the nvidia card you have to go into the power management sections and force it to run in high performance mode. There are a series of tricks you can use to try and keep the computer running under the high performance mode which are outlined in the links below. If you do not force the card to run in high performance mode you basically have a netbook, oh and by the way there is no possible way to run at anything other than 1/2 cpu clock speed and 1/2 gpu clock speed on the battery. You have to plug it in to even get the thing to run at the factory clock speed.
This has been a known issue with a substantial portion of the y580 production run. Just read the info contained in the forum thread I have listed below.
With any luck I may be able to force this thing to work for a while, if the new driver downloads before it crashes.

Another issue, and the reason for my return, is the screen developed a vertical line of constantly lit (dead?) pixels about 40% away from the left hand side of the screen. For a brand new computer, I have to say this was pretty disappointing. I was excited to receive this item, and disappointed to be returning it. I don't think I'll buy another, instead I'll look for a brand with better ventilation and better reviews.
Because the item was purchased through a seller, and fulfilled by Amazon, I don't have the ability to get it exchanged. I have to settle for refund from Amazon instead. I will follow up this review with the results of the refund process.

Good:
-Screen is sharp and clear, and while its not a higher resolution screen, it is still pretty good.
-6 gigs of ram, really helps with gaming. Makes things smoother and faster. Paired with an awesome NVIDIA graphics card. I haven't played more processor intense games like Skyrim yet, but its doing pretty good with what I've tried so far.
-750 gb hard drive. You don't necessarily need this for gaming, but between your save files, documents, music, and photos its really nice to have the extra space.
-Speakers! They sound really great for laptop speakers. I had to buy a sound bar for my toshiba because the left speaker quit after a month. These JBL speakers sound pretty darn good for built in.
-Light up keys and a number pad on the keyboard. I type in a lot of dates and numbers at work, so after getting used to the number pad it was nice to have one on the laptop at home. And the backlit keys are great for working in low lighting.
-Slim and relatively lightweight for the hardware inside.
Not so great:
-Miss the media buttons at the top. This one you have to hold down the Fn key to use the secondary functions on the keyboard, like volume and your music pause/play/stop.
-Touch pad has no defined right and left buttons, but it becomes slightly more 'clickable' the closer to the bottom of the touch pad. This means sometimes your cursor drifts right as you try to click.
-Disc tray is a little flimsy, and I feel I have to hold it up while locking the disc in place. Also the button for the disc eject is super tiny. Its hard to find by touch and even harder to press the button. Its pretty thin and doesn't stick out enough.
-Because of the number pad moving some stuff over, the right-hand shift key is smaller and easy to miss when you're typing.
Other than those minor attributes, I really haven't found anything else to complain about. This laptop is working great so far and seems like a really great bang for your buck.
This lenovo y580 is one of the entry models of the y580 series. This one does not have 1080p, blue ray, or a solid state drive. With that said, I knew that before buying this laptop. I don't own blue ray movies and don't care much for 1080p screen so I went for this laptop anyway. This laptop is amazing for the price. I paid $799.99 for it and for a laptop with one of the latest high end i7 ivy bridge processors equipped with a Nvidia GTX 660, there's nothing out there that can beat it. I've searched for a laptop for months and I have yet to see a laptop with the same processor and dedicated graphics for $800. This laptop can run battlefield on high settings without any hickups. If you plan to buy this laptop, I highly recommend installing a solid state drive if you want everything to load faster.

No, the screen isn't full HD, but it's still a great gaming laptop for the price, especially if you hook it up to an external monitor. The Nvidia card is great and can play most modern games at moderate to high settings; it's not as fast as the 670M or 675M, but it's half the power draw so it stays much cooler.Personally, I've never even looked at the screen--it's constantly hooked up to a monitor, so that isn't an issue for me. I received this computer a few days ago, and while I like the computer overall (speed, gpu performance, etc.), there are definite flaws in the overall design. This computer is designed to handle high end gaming, and it does a pretty decent job at it. However, the ventilation is extremely poor. It gets pretty hot, pretty quickly. As others have posted, the resolution is not 1920x1080...which I knew in advance, so that's not an issue to me. I was looking for a cheap, lower end gaming laptop that could replace my current laptop(used for internet, microsoft office, etc.) and my PC (used for gaming and more loaded programs). This one was recommended on several lists of gaming laptops under $1000. I was looking for a very thin and light computer with a second generation AMD A-series APU chip (7000 series graphics). As far as I can tell, the 13.3 and 14 inch Samsung Series 5 computers were my only options. I chose the 13.3 and I'm very happy with it.
The laptop comes with 4 GB of RAM and an open slot into which I installed a second CT51264BC1339 Crucial 4GB 204-PIN Sodimm DDR3 4GB stick of RAM. The computer is noticeably zippier with 8 GB of RAM, so I recommend upgrading (it was pretty easy, but note that the RAM cover is held down with clips as well as a single screw -it doesn't swing open nicely like the manual seems to indicate. You have to pry it open with a screwdriver, which isn't too bad).
The computer boots fast, runs fast, and generally performs as you would expect given its stats, with no extra frustrations. I've played Civilization 5 on it with no lags or other problems (I'm not a hard core gamer). It's a perfectly respectable competitor for Intel ultrabooks.
And it's hard to overstate how nice it is to use a 3.5 pound laptop. The weight difference versus my previous machine makes my commute (by ferry) and travel much more pleasant, not to mention just browsing on the couch. Overall, for the cost, this is a good solid choice.
If you're looking for something small, light, and reasonably powerful, this is a good laptop at a good price.

Overall I am very happy with everything. I wanted a smaller laptop without losing certain features.
I have this little thing hooked up to my 46" LED via HDMI. I cannot complain at all. I play some games on it with no hiccups.
CONS: 5400RPM Hard Drive...It should have came with a 7200RPM. It got pretty hot. Temperature is OK when not plugged in, but when it is...it is way too hot to touch.
I fixed this easily with some Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste. I had to take the whole thing apart. Comes with a lot of bloatware.
I would highly recommend getting this mid-range ultrabook. It is very affordable, and comparable to the higher-end ones.
I would definitely purchase this if you can fix the issues above stated.
Bottom line.
It's not the best money can buy, but at this price range you can't beat it. You just have to be able to put in a few hours to make it the way you want it. ( See Cons)

Light and portable
Runs pretty smoothly, i.e. no lagging or delay when opening and running programs (from what I could tell during my short ownership)
Cons:
Mine would overheat and crash, and became too hot to touch on the bottom side near the back. This made the laptop pretty useless, and I had to return it for a refund.
Lots of bloatware (i.e. useless, pre-installed software). Just annoying to uninstall it.
Ships with a recovery CD, despite the lack of CD drive on the laptop. You'll need an external CD drive, or be able to copy the CD contents to a bootable USB flash drive.
Important note: I strongly encourage anyone who still decides to buy this laptop (after all, mine might've been a single case of overheating) to first do a complete re-installation of Windows using the CD (or some other form of "stress testing") just to see if it can make it through the process. Mine couldn't, it would overheat during the process and crash. The last thing you want is to use it lightly for a few months, only to later find out it overheats during longer, more intense use. Try to test out everything on any new laptop you buy.

The screen looks awesome, even in direct sunlight. I can play Team Fortess 2 with a lot of action and not drop below 30 fps. I work with scientific computing so having a Trinity core that I can test code out on is nice. I get a little over 5 hours battery life in Windows with the brightness at 60%. In Linux I get a little over 4 hours with the same brightness. The power plug barely stays in place, but this ended up being a nice 'feature' when I tripped over the power cord. The screen has some flex, but the keyboard does not. The whole thing feels fragile, but maybe that is because it is so thin and light. It has survived my bad habit of throwing my backpack into my card for two months now, so it can't be too fragile.I could not get the wireless to work in openSUSE 12.2, or at least WPA2. The wireless worked fine in windows. It did get hot when playing a game, up to 70 degrees C. I switched out the wireless card with an Intel one, you need a half height mini PCIe card. This required taking the entire laptop apart. Since I had it apart I put some different thermal paste on the CPU and got a 10 15 degree temperature drop. You can get to the extra RAM slot and hard drive by just removing one screw. The hard drive is 7mm high and you will not be able to fit a standard 9.5mm one in there. I put a 7200 RPM Hitachi drive in this laptop and an extra 4GB of RAM. The 4GB the laptop comes with is soldered to the board.

This is my first ultrabook as I cannot afford a proper Mac Book AIr.Guess what this is amazing it is so fast for a thin laptop and runs Modern Warefare 3 brilliantly much better than intel HD3000.

The lap top came in the mail fast and on time. It was refurbished and set up to use right away including anti-virus and software. The bonus was the battery life is almost three hours.It is xp which is my favorite and very fast.

I was a little sceptical at first when I bought this however, I received the product sooner then anticipated and I have to say this works better then the brand new computer my mother purchased. I've purchased more expensive laptops in the past with no luck so decided to try another refurbished computer. Computer is a little slow, and had to install own antivirus protection and well as Office, but otherwise not a bad laptop.
