First of all let me say that I've only had this laptop for a few days of heavy use, so I'm sure my opinion of it will change over time. I will update this review if it does change.

First impressions:This laptop is very impressive, especially for the price.

Look and feel: this laptop is big and sexy. The brushed metal case, the red backlit keyboard, and the sleek angular profile of the back of the display and the speakers all contribute to a good looking piece of equipment. The brushed metal surface, however, is really a fingerprint magnet. No matter how many times you wash your hands, this laptop will still pick up fingerprints if you even touch the outer case. If you're one of those people who is obsessed with keeping your technology spotless, don't buy this laptop. Personally, the fingerprints don't really bother me, and the brushed metal looks great from a distance, fingerprints or not. The keyboard is very solid, and does not give, even if you're a hard typer like me. The keyboard feels very nice, with good tactility and key spacing. The backlight isn't blindingly bright, but provides plenty of light to type with no ambient light and with the screen brightness all the way down. It has 3 settings: off, low, and high, which can be changed using the function key and the space bar. It doesn't have an ambient light sensor, so you'll have to manually adjust the backlight. personally, I don't mind this at all.

Weight: this laptop is heavy, clocking in around 6.5 pounds. for a 15" form factor, this is significant, and if you're looking for ultra-portability, this laptop isn't the right choice for you. The fact that you're looking at a laptop with two graphics cards means mobility isn't your highest priority.

Battery life: as you can see from the specifications, the battery life on this thing is pretty bad. It has no integrated graphics cards, so it's always powering the two GT650M cards that it has. this obviously consumes quite a bit of battery. Early tests (3 full charges/discharges) have the battery giving about 3.5 hours on normal usage (low screen brightness, taking notes, nothing intensive) and about 2 while doing intensive browsing (youtube videos, streaming music, running a compiler, etc). Once again, this is a non issue for me, because I use this for mobile performance, not for mobility.

now, for the best part: the Graphics!

This laptop has AWESOME graphics capabilities. As of now, it is the only laptop available that has the GT650M SLI setup. With 4GB of dedicated video memory between the two cards, this thing can really churn out the FPS. So far, I've only tested two games: League of Legends and Trine 2. On maximum settings, during a normal match, I got a max of 190FPS on League of legends and averaged about 80-120 during fights. wow. League isn't the most graphics intensive game out there, but still, I think it's impressive. On trine 2, with the settings maxed out and with anti-aliasing on maximum (8x) It looked amazing and didn't lag.

As you may have read elsewhere, the SLI setup can cause micro-stutter if your FPS drop below 30. It isn't the end of the world, and is definitely still playable even with the stutter. obviously, you'd hope to be above 30fps for most games anyway.

note: there is a downside to this being the only device with a gt650m SLI as driver updates may be scarce. Nvidia (as of right now) does not provide the drivers on their website, and they must be obtained from lenovo. There is a built in update utility included. I have experienced some driver issues (display driver stopped responding and recovered). I'm not sure what caused these issues, and I'm hoping for an update (this setup is still very new) but even then it's not the end of the world. The graphics were fine during gaming, and they glitched out while I was installing software, so I may have caused the issue for all I know.

Trackpad: there have been a lot of complaints about this trackpad, I haven't experienced any of the issue mentioned. It seems fine to me, with the multi touch functions working correctly and the feel is fine. Trackpads are all slightly annoying, and this one isn't special. It's middle of the road. I like the texture (a matte feel), but its still a trackpad. I'll be using a mouse the majority of the time anyways.

Speakers: the included JBL audio is decently loud, and sounds a little muddled and missing treble. Obviously i'm not surprised, and these speakers are better than I expected for laptop audio. Again, nothing special, they're fine.

Processor: the 3rd gen i5 included is plenty at least for me, and is decently future proof.

Hard Drive: probably the weakest element of this laptop, it's a 5400rpm, which is going to be slow. If you want faster boot up times, just upgrade to a SSD. this laptop does have an mSATA port which would be used to add a system SSD.

Heat: this laptop does get warm, not hot. It has very effective cooling, and even while maxing out the GPUs it didn't get that toasty, nothing that was uncomfortable. better than I expected, but still pretty average. the bottom of it isn't awfully bad, so it would probably be fine sitting on your lap for a while.

Display: this is one of the only 15" laptops I could find that had a 1920x1080 native resolution. It looks fantastic! my only complaints here are that text and other elements can get a little small, and that the bezel of the screen is surprisingly large. Its not huge, but it's bigger than I expected, and there is a significant bezel. The colors are fantastic and the pixels are invisible.

Overall, This is an awesome laptop. It's very high end, and I still feel like I got a fantastic amount of hardware for the price I paid. Again, it is best equipped for gaming or other graphics intensive tasks, but It can definitely hold its own with much pricier options.

Edit 1: Had a hard time disabling the automatic screen lock after 1 minute of inactivity. had to reset local security policies to fix. Annoying, but was able to solve with some googling. Still no video driver update that I have found. Everything else is still awesome!

Edit 2: DRIVERS! so it turns out, if you go to nvidia's geforce graphics driver site, and you turn off SLI in the control panel, it allows you to download and install the most recent package from nvidia. this is awesome! currently running on 314.21 (beta) and testing it out, it seems there was actually fewer SLI profiles supported on the previous version than 314.10.... the important part is... graphics update from nvidia, awesome.

I have had the Y500 for just over a week and overall I am very happy with my purchase. I opted for this i5 version since the i7 doesn't really add any value for gaming and I'd rather spend the money on other upgrades own the road when I need it. This model has the SLI dual graphics, and at the current price, this is a steal!

The laptop arrived safely no thanks to Amazon. I order a ton of stuff through Prime and even cheap kids toys have at least some bubble wrapping and are placed in a standard shipping box. This was shipped in the original (and small) laptop box from Lenovo and with no additional packaging materials. Why???

Now onto the hardware….

All of the built-in hardware seems great with the exception of the slow but ample 5400 RPM 1TB hard drive. It's by far the biggest bottleneck of the system, but it's not a deal breaker. Most people will appreciate the huge capacity for storing large game libraries. Apparently you can toss in a compatible mSATA SSD and boot from this or set it up as a cache. I would set it as boot drive and keep the 1TB drive for data if given the option.

The screen is VERY nice and clear. Colors look great and overall I can't find any flaws with the screen. This is true HD running at 1080p. Most other gaming notebooks in this price range only provide 720p (do not want). I updated the Nvidia drivers from Lenovo's site and they do seem to perform better than what was included. SLI is awesome to have in a notebook and I'm super impressed with how all of my games are performing so far. Steam Big Picture mode works well on this when connected via HDMI to my Panasonic plasma TV.

The case is very basic and to be honest, does have a somewhat cheap feel to it. However, I have no concerns of it breaking or coming loose. It's also a grease magnet, but I knew that before from other reviews. I'm surprised that the laptop feels so light for the size. The PSU is huge, but I've seen bigger. There is a minimal amount of external ports on this laptop, which is a bit of a surprise for a laptop of this size and intended use. There is nothing truly lacking for gaming, although, I would have loved to have an eSATA port included as well.

Opening the case for the first time was a bit scary. Some of the hinges come off easily and others do not. It took me around 10 minutes before I finally had carefully opened this up. Once opened up, it's easy to replace the internal components (RAM, HDD, mSATA, etc.,).

The keyboard is good. I'd give it a solid B. I would prefer a slightly stiffer response as I find the keys a bit spongy for my liking. Not a deal breaker by any means though. The backlit keys look cool and be turned down to a lower setting or turned off completely using the function keys.

I was very concerned about the track pad due to all of the noise online about this. Take a deep breath it is fine, but far from perfect. I'm not crazy about the texture and I would have preferred physical mouse buttons, but these are unfortunately getting harder to come by and only seem to be found on much more expensive gaming laptops and/or models geared for business use. The detection of the right and left mouse buttons is good and basic tracking is also fine. The gestures, however, don't always work but I hear that you can disable this.

The battery seems OK and matches the 3 hour advertised average when used for non-gaming use. I will keep it plugged in to AC power when gaming. Apparently the GPU's throttle down when not on AC power, but I can't imagine ever gaming without it since you would maybe get 1 hour tops of playing time before having to plug it in back to charge.

Onto the included OS and build from Lenovo…

Like all OEM consumer PC's, there is a fair amount of crapware/trailware included, which I immediately uninstalled before attempting to do anything else. McAfee was the first to go. Just use the included Microsoft Security Essentials and be done with it. All you need to keep on this system is the drivers and some of the Lenovo utilities. The rest can be removed.

For those who don't like the new Metro interface (and I assume this is the root cause for the hatred of Windows 8) should download and install Classic Shell for free. Windows 8 performs great and is a bit faster than Windows 7. This will give you the best of both worlds (a great interface and great performance). You can get this from ninite.com (an awesome site for downloading a bunch of apps at once).

Final Verdict: This system provides a lot of value for the money and you will not find a better gaming laptop for the price at the moment. If money is not a factor and/or if you don't want to upgrade any parts yourself down the road, you may instead want to check out an Asus ROG model. Of course, if you are not going to use this for gaming, there are better laptops to be found in the same price range.

Solidly built and hefty. Bought it as an occasional gaming laptop (WoW, BF3, SCII), and it plays the part well. i won't rehash what's already been covered, but will mention the trackpad issue. It was fixed in y500 built December 2012 onward (don't remember the date). i just received mine, and it was built late February 2013. The trackpad's fine. No random wandering or anything. that's it. enjoy.

First thing's first. After over a month with this laptop and doing what I assume everyone else has been doing to try to deal with the touchpad by lowering the sensitivity, I've finally discovered that the fix for the touchpad is to move the sensitivity all the way to the left. Sounds backwards to increase the sensitivity when it's jumpier than a cat using a jackhammer, but apparently the touchpad is not sensitive enough and loses track which causes it to jump. It's way better at the highest sensitivity (left side). In fact it only works at the highest sensitivity.

UPDATE: Right now I'm not using the highest sensitivity anymore. I lowered it a bit slowly, about 5 small ticks from the left. Just need to find what's right for you.

Oh by the way I'm talking about the "touch sensitivity" slider in the touchpad driver. Not your windows mouse sensitivity in the regular control panel. Now since this is supposed to be a review of a laptop. You'll also have a better experience with the touchpad if your palm isn't right next to it throwing off its readings.

Obviously the killer feature in this laptop is the SLI. It makes this laptop a better value than anything that has been on the market. Ever. Yeah the cooling, the specs, the build, the screen, the speakers, the camera, the mic, all great. You can read about them on the spec sheet and other reviews talk about them in detail. I bought this laptop because short of $2000, there is no better laptop. And I don't have $2000. Seriously. I don't even know why I spent all my money on a laptop.

But I'm not giving it 5 stars because Lenovo dropped the ball on the keyboard and touchpad. Yes I tried all the keyboards and touchpads in store and everyone has the same rubber keyboard and hinge touchpad. Even the boutiques. But if everyone jumped off a bridge, I'm still not giving you 5 stars for jumping off a bridge.

As said, I fixed the sensitivity problem with the touchpad. But that's not the only problem. The hinge is horrible. It drops the bottom of the pad into the laptop body. Which is absolutely the most loving way of pushing dust into your system since the sledgehammer. And only the bottom half goes down because it's on a hinge, so you can't click on the top half. A step backwards from having mouse buttons is an understatement. It's square wheels on a wheelbarrow bad. No, it's triangle wheels bad.

The keyboard is bad. You've heard the writers like this keyboard, you've read reviewers like this keyboard. You might have tried this keyboard and liked it. But it is bad. It's a piece of rubber with some Christmas lights except they are all the same color and don't do fancy patterns. Sorry I'm not a fan of typing on a piece of rubber. I could type on a washable keyboard if I wanted a piece of rubber but I don't. Because it sucks. Laptops used to come with scissor keyboards, in other words rubber membrane keyboards with a bit of plastic to hold it and control its movement. But oh what a world of difference a bit of plastic makes compared to this. No, you can't find a laptop with scissor keyboards anymore. But that doesn't excuse you from failing to do it. You can't rate a laptop 5 stars for failure. I'm not asking for capacitive here, just a bit of plastic. Yeah make the laptop a bit thicker so I can actually type on it! Oh the arrow and numpad keys are substandard size. I mean really now.

Oh yeah no matter what you do, don't use the recalibrate battery function. It will cause an unfixable problem with your battery management.

Since this is a laptop review I will update it as long as there is something worth updating. Especially the touchpad sensitivity.

It's like trying to run a lamborghini on bike wheels, sure the engine is great or what you want it to do and look, but it's just not gonna work without the stability of the wheels. (Okay that may have been an extreme example, but you get my point) The SLI Graphics are amazing, but the CPU for some reason is really really slow and bad, the graphics works great but when I'm trying to play a game everything takes forever to load, which makes great graphics less enjoyable.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because there is no easily accessible hard drive. I haven't looked at the service manual but I assume you have to remove the whole bottom cover instead of just a small panel. Otherwise this is a fantastic laptop so far (about 5 days of ownership).

The bad (some of these may only apply to certain types of users):

1. No easily accessible compartment is visible for a hard drive. Meaning replacing/upgrading the hard drive is not a simple task as it is on some laptops.

2. Like another reviewer said, the buttons for the trackpad are invisible. Assume a customer never reads a manual/skips all tutorials and this can be confusing at first. I had to disable the feature of being able to tap the touchpad to register as a mouse click since by sometimes clicking the actual button would register as a double click.

3. The integrated graphics/gpu switching is confusing. I wish I could force the Radeon GPU somehow. Furmark was reporting that it was still relying on the Intel HD graphics even though I had it flagged for performance mode. That was prior to the Feb 20 drivers on Samsung's site though, need to retest.

The good:

1. Thank Thor, the screen is great. Matte is how laptop screens should be. The trend of glossy screens needs to end.

2. After installing your own un-branded version of Windows, all you have to do to get your function keys working is install the Easy Settings software from Samsung. I don't mind this since the software is actually pretty useful. This is a pleasant surprise since most manufacturer-branded software is garbage.

3. Alright, I'm actually going to mention the Easy Settings software. It's surprisingly fast and useful. I'll be the last person on earth to admit something like this since I like control over everything that runs on my computer. But their software is nice. It doesn't try to get in the way, it doesn't look like crap, and it's fast at what it does.

4. Boots retardedly fast. Even after wiping out all pre-existing partitions and reinstalling my own version of Windows7.

Other thoughts:

1. The back lit keyboard and automatically adjusting brightness of the screen can be configured to be user controlled. I guess the other reviewer never looked for those settings. I have mine set to a fixed value which I adjust with the function keys. By default, it automatically uses the light sensor to adjust it.

2. If you have problems playing high resolution videos, especially with horizontal lines (looks like deinterlacing artifacts), update to the Feb 20 video drivers. Fixes that issue among, possibly others.

3. A ramdisk is not a bad idea for this at all. Just makes it even snappier. And with 8Gb of memory, you won't really miss 2Gb allocated to stuff like your temp/browsing cache files.

4. REGISTER YOUR LAPTOP ON SAMSUNG'S SITE TO GET 3 MONTHS EXTENSION ON YOUR WARRANTY! Takes like 5 minutes and totally worth it.

This is a well-built, well-outfitted laptop. You lose something in expandability in exchange for the very sleek design, but it comes pretty well outfitted stock so this isn't a big deal. There are a few nags, however:

1) Chiclet keyboard. It isn't bad by any means, but I prefer the keyboard on my old Dell Inspiron for typing. On the plus side, the number pad is very handy (note: the photos on Amazon as of the date of this review do not accurately reflect the keyboard layout; but then, the photos at Samsung.com don't either).

2) The track pad is a little annoying; as others have noted, the buttons are hidden under the pad, with the result that you will often accidentally double-click when trying to left-click, or move the cursor when you are trying to right-click. I've never been a big fan of track pads anyway though, so I ordered a new wireless mouse at the same time as I ordered the laptop. The track pad is certainly good enough to be useful, it just takes some getting used to.

3) Video switching between integrated and discrete graphics didn't work well out of the box. Following an update it seems to be better. Though be warned, said driver update is over 700 megabytes; I'm not sure how they manage to make it 4 times the size of the unified driver update (for AMD's desktop discrete graphics), but probably not practical if you don't have high speed internet available (and the update site is rather slow, I was only getting ~300 KB/s on a connection capable of 1.5 MB/s).

4) The screen looks great (and it's matte!), but does have very limited viewing angles, particularly in the vertical direction.

There are also some great features:

1) Sleek, beautiful design. Some reviews I've read mentioned poor fit around the LCD screen; not the case at all on mine, it is beautifully put together. Not quite Macbook Pro build quality, but then it is less than half the price for similar specs.

2) The Express Cache works well so far, startup is very quick (if not so quick as my desktop with an SSD).

3) Samsung hasn't pre-loaded a bunch of crapware. Pretty much just their update tool (a little clunky, but works fine), Norton, WildTangent game pack, and Samsung's own media player (haven't tried it). Not totally clean, but not bogged down too much either (I didn't even feel the need to do a clean Windows install, which is unusual).

Overall a great little computer for the price. A couple of niggles, but it is fast, has loads of storage, and looks great I'd definitely recommend it to a friend.

Let me begin by saying that this laptop deserves a 5 rating, but that I almost never give a 5 stars rating.

I was asked to suggest a good laptop for someone who does extensive international travel and after some serious research decided on this one; the user of the laptop is extremely happy with it. I spent some time with this device configuring it after its purchase and I am simply impressed. I will list the positive and the negatives that I have noticed in my interaction with this laptop.

Let me warn people to be very cautious when reading the reviews on this laptop, as many Apple fanboys and other web opinion generating teams are giving it bad reviews without actually using or owning the product. To determine the credibility level of some of the negative reviewers of this product check the numbers of reviews they have given in the past and the amount of time they have been reviewing. You will notice that many of the one star reviewers actually created their accounts less than two weeks prior to reviewing this product and have less than 3 reviews on Amazon. This is highly suspicious and smells of fraud.

The positive:

Solid, great keys, the touch pad is very responsive and not the obstacle some have claimed. The back lit keys are very useful and the lighting makes typing in the dark a pleasure. The resolution of the screen is extremely adequate, but not excessive,(remember that the retina display which incidentally is manufactured by Samsung is not a useful feature in say, watching movies), and for reading text and looking at images the resolution of this screen, 1600 x 900, is extremely adequate.

Extremely powerful and fast.

Well priced.

The laptop has a very quiet fan that goes on depending on the demand placed on the processor. Most of the time it is off.

The sound system is very very adequate and a pleasure to use.

It has a dedicated graphics card.

Built in Bluetooh.

It has a USB 3 port.

The laptop runs cool even when watching movies. Someone claimed in a review that watching Netflix films was a problem. That is absolutely false.

The self adjusting lighting property for this laptop is extremely useful as it makes reading in daylight quite comfortable. I have noticed that under certain mixed lighting conditions the screen will flicker. This is caused by the censor that decides on the lighting intensity of the screen. To remedy this issue, you can deactivate the self adjusting screen lighting, or just slightly change the angle of your screen.

Some people have claimed in reviews that the is a blue screen issue when this laptop does Windows upgrades. I have not had that experience with this device and have found updating Windows to be extremely trouble free.

The operating system of this laptop is housed in a solid state drive (SSD) and thus offer extremely fast on/off capabilities and also booting.

The fact that the screen of this laptop is non-reflective is a big plus as it allows users to use the laptop in very bright lighting without seeing their reflection on the screen. Just this feature is many times more useful than increasing the pixel density of the screen to an unnecessary level.

Updating the drivers of this computer using the Samsung updating utility was a pleasure, but make sure that the laptop is connected to an outlet when you do so. I encourage people to update their bios something that is almost trivial to do in this laptop using the Samsung updating utility program, but to ensure the update runs as smooth as possible deactivate your antivirus program while the update is taking place.

The touchpad of this laptop is extremely rich and requires that people spend some time familiarizing themselves with it. It is extremely responsive, but mine came at a lower level of sensitivity causing me to think it was slow, but it was easy to increase the speed using the system properties in Windows. This touchpad is loaded with features that will make surfing and using the laptop an pleasure, but if you are not inquisitive or don't spend a small amount of time familiarizing yourself with its many features, you will likely have some issues with it. Fortunately, you can deactivate the touchpad.

The Slot-Loading DVD mechanism makes it much less risky to damage the dvd drive when the laptop is in transit.

The maximum amount of ram possible is 8gig, but this is a lot more than necessary unless you plan on editing picture files of over 6 gig; also remember that Windows 8 will be less resource intensive than Windows 7 and thus that you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 with no problem, if you chose. Windows 8 is due for release in or around Nov of 2012. Then laptops like this will sell for much more after being upgraded by manufacturers to Windows 8. Because Windows 7 will be supported by Microsoft for at least 5 more years, it makes sense to purchase a Windows 7 laptop now when they are being sold relatively cheaply and upgrade later when the bugs of Windows 8 are taken care of.

The negative:

No vga outlet, but it has a miniature one the purchase of whose adapter will leave you 30 dollars short.

The battery is not removable.

Under certain writing angles you feel the edges of the laptop on your wrists and for some this could be a bit uncomfortable. I must admit that I was aware of it almost immediately but then adjusted my writing angle and forgot about it.

It would have been wise for Samsung to have made the laptop upgradable to at least to 16 gig of ram or more. With extremely HD video editing and picture editing growing in popularity and I see many people wishing that capability.

The battery life is not as long as claimed, 7.8 hours. I would say it is approx 10 to 20 percent shorter, depending on what you are doing with the laptop.

Slot-Loading DVD drives do not accept miniature discs, a problem with all slot-loading DVDs. Fortunately there is little use these days for miniature discs, and if any installation software comes in a miniature disc, you can almost certainly download the software to your hard-drive from the Internet.

Requires some adjusting to. Because this product has many new features, people that are not very inquisitive about technology or people with below average intelligence will find it a slight bit challenging. Fortunately, for such people there are Apple products; although for the same (useful) hardware specs the price could easily double or triple, not to mention the limitations imposed by Apple's jailyouin approach to technology.

Conclusion:

I would highly recommend this product especially to people that do lots of traveling and require an easily carried non-ultrabook laptop with *lots* of power and that abides by modern open standards in technology. If you have no experience using a computer and lack basic inquisitiveness or have below average IQ, you should avoid this product. This product is a great buy and once Windows 8 becomes available upgrading to it should be easy, and certainly since Windows 8 will require even less resources than Windows 7, you will have no hardware issues with the upgrade. I wish Samsung had made this laptop with user replaceable batteries and with more ram upgrading potential. Had that been the case I would be happy to own one.

I bought this laptop two weeks ago and have enjoyed it quite a bit. One thing I didn't realize when I purchase it was they've included an 8gb cache ssd inside (likely soldered on board). This combined with the proper drivers speed up windows boot quite a bit. I did wipe the laptop and install Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and it ran great. I didn't have any issues with finding drivers. The only problem I had to trouble shoot was the laptops track pad (a bit too sensitive in Ubuntu). Other than that one hiccup it works great. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, is the display. While the screen is quite a bit better than most laptops, It's still a tad odd if you don't have it angled just right. That said, for the given price, you're not likely to find an IPS panel in a laptop.

Solid construction, lightweight and an overall beast of a machine. These laptops are considered part of the Microsoft premium collection for a reason. You won't be disappointed.

I purchased my Samsung NP700Z5A-S0AUS from the Microsoft Store in February for my birthday. It was between one of the 15" MacBook Pros and this laptop. I needed something portable but didn't skimp on quality hardware (the reason why I passed immediately on the MacBook Air).

Buying from the MS Store gives me Microsoft Signature and allows my system to run effortlessly and I didn't have to deal with bloatware that you get from Best Buy and other retailers. Using this computer has been a dream for me. It's fast, efficient, handles my gaming adequately, and is a very well-planned machine. I know other reviewers are having a hard time adjusting, but what do you expect when you move on to a new model? I haven't had any issues with it.

Trackpad:

The trackpad works fine and if you're accustomed to using a trackpad in the first place, as opposed to just plugging in a USB mouse, you should have no problem whatsoever finding the "buttons". Of course, you have to tweak the settings to what you're comfortable with. Apple uses the same trackpad so I hope no former Apple users are complaining.

Keyboard:

I love the backlit, chiclet keyboard. It's quiet and makes it easy to type. Another thing about it is that if you spill anything through this type of keyboard, the laptop takes less damage because of the way it is designed. You can control the backlighting with just a touch of a button. The keyboard comes with a full numeric keypad (which at this point I cannot live without). I punch in numbers all day so it's a great feature. And don't complain about the chiclet keyboard either because it's designed by Sony with many manufacturers employing it: Apple, Sony, Dell, ASUS, MSI.

Screen:

The LED LCD screen is a pure matte. Like another reviewer mentioned, you don't have to worry about anyone looking at your screen because with this laptop, they won't see anything. It is a very bright 15.6" screen that Samsung has managed to fit into a 14.2" chassis so you still have a larger screen within a slim, sleek frame.

Battery:

The battery life is insanely long. I can have my computer on the High Performance battery setting without having to worry about charging it any time soon. The battery being built-in gives me relief of not having to worry about it falling out if my laptop is ever dropped in the future.

Ports:

This model has 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port that keeps powering your device no matter what (ex. a cell phone), 1 HDMI port, 1 power jack, 1 ethernet port, an SD slot, audio/mic port, and a slot for a Kensington cable lock.

Of all the laptops I have had, I've really taken a liking to this one. It's a stunning machine in and out. It was my first Samsung laptop purchase and it surely won't be my last. I just wish there were more accessories made for this computer.

I've owned this since 2008 and have never had a problem, ever. It has built in speakers, webcam, 4 GB memory and if for some reason I needed more I can add 4 more gbs. I can have 4 windows open at once and view them all too. Great dependable machine oh and it has its own international passport lol.

I've had this laptop for almost a week now and so far, I'm satisfied. I've had HP's in the past and have always been happy, so I stuck with HP this time.

Things I like about this computer:

-Price was a deal!! Ordered here on amazon for $520+shipping.

-GREAT fan, keeps the laptop cool, even after hours of use.

I like the finger print reader, helps to have an alternative to remembering so many passwords. Also like the added security, just in case it gets stolen...

The i3 processor is fast. The video and audio quality works great. The 320-GB hard drive is more than I'll need for music and photos.

Things I don't like:

-Unfortunately, my docking station from my previous HP is now outdated and isn't compatible with this new laptop.

There is an extra column of keys on the left side of the keyboard, so now when I think I'm hitting the "a" key, I keep hitting the caps lock. Just takes some getting used to.

Overall, in my opinion, so far, the good outweighs the bad and I'm happy with my purchase and will continue to purchase HP's in the future.

This laptop is outstanding, I've had it for a few months now and have not experienced any kind of problem! It's extremely quick, the i3 processor is perfect, the graphics are gorgeous. I noticed some people have been complaining about the trackpad but I have never had an issue with it, there is a light on the top left corner that shuts it off so if you accidentally hit it when your typing you can just turn it off and vuala! problem solved! This laptop is very well for moderate use. It handles daily tasks very well. The battery is horrible. I unplug the charger at 100 percent, and it says 3 hours and 14 minutes remaining. The laptop build quality is also mediocre. Overall, this laptop is great for mediocre type business and the price is great, if you want long battery, this is not the laptop for you.

I couldn't be happier with this laptop. IT ARRIVED TWO DAYS AFTER I ORDERED IT (I didn't even select or get charged for two day shipping. I guess the shipper was that fast). This is exactly what I spent about 3 days looking for driving around town to different stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Best-Buy and 3 different Staples. Staples is where I originally came across this beauty, but unfortunately they were putting things in their ads that they didn't yet have in stock. But anyways this laptop has a good processor for multitasking and downloading, it has the touch screen feature, it has a nice screen size (Unlike the 11.6" Acer V5 Aspire that I returned to get this, which was a great swap), it has a fast power on start up and shut down, the speakers are pretty good but I'd recommend using headphones if you want to get the most out of its sound, it has a nice HD display which comes in handy when I'm watching movies on Netflix, it has a great amount of storage space, it comes with Windows 8 and that's easier to navigate and learn using the touch screen feature if you're new to it, it has a great battery life especially since its touch screen I thought it'd die in like 3 or 4 hours like the Acer I talked about earlier. I got this laptop September 10th so I waited about a month before doing a review and I have to admit I've had no problems with it so far. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Ok, I've had the computer for a few days now. Out of the box it is an excellent starter system for the student. Very easy to setup and get going. Windows 8 is not the greatest, however this is not a Windows review... The touch screen is very responsive as I am impressed with the speed and response of the system itself.

I do not have an issue with the speakers as another review stated. The speakers are as expected for this price model. I would recommend this product for any student wanting to upgrade to a touch screen with the latest operating system.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a gaming system, buy a gaming system. This computer is excellent for the online college classes that I take, and great for a student. As a side note, the new Internet Explorer STINKS.... I would recommend Google Chrome or Firefox for ease of use on the internet...

I also had the misfortune of purchasing this laptop based on generally favorable reviews. My Inspiron E1705 hard drive crashed within 12-months of purchase destroying all contents. It was in warranty and Dell fixed it. I assumed the faulty hardware was just a fluke and everything would be fine after the repair. A few months later the AC adapter stopped working. Dell sold me another cable for $100 as it wasn't a "standard" model. Six months later the laptop crashed again once again destroying all contents. Mind you the laptop was lightly used and never left the house. Rather than taking the professional high road and resolving the problem once and for all, Dell was quick to remind me that laptop was out of warranty. I spent $1,400 for this? The next few weeks were a nightmare, including hours of unhelpful scripted technicians, misdirected calls, departmental runarounds, frustrating and incomprehensible foreign accents. After weeks of this, the issue is finally escalated to a supervisor who agrees that Dell products should not fail like this within 18 months. He promises to call back and correct the problem. He never does. I try again to get through the call center maze again but to no avail. I gave up and went out and bought a Mac. The moral: this product comes with low-quality hardware. It is a serious customer risk. Given Dell's inability to respond to a legitimate customer issue I would say any Dell product is a serious customer risk. At this juncture I would also be wary of any favorable or fair magazine reviews of their products given their sizable advertising budgets they bring to print and web media.

What a workhorse. I have owned mine for over 6 years and never had one issue. I have updated the ram and hard drive, but that was driven by installing new OS's. The laptop has perfomrd flawlesly running XP, Vista, Windows 7 and now Windows 8. I have never had to replace the screen or keyboard. The Intel Centrino Duo processor is a 64 bit processor and runs any application I can throw at it. Way to go Dell, you created the ultimate laptop. I only wish Dell would continue support for drivers for new operating systems. But I have found that new laptops that contain the same touchpad, soundcard and other device drivers work on the E1705 making it possible to continue to install new operating systems as they come out.

This 17'' monster is no lightweight. The Dell Insprion E1705 is a big computer but does the job with no problems. I encountered no problems with this product.

Pros:

The keyboard is spacious and does not cause any trouble when it comes to typing. The display on the is great...like having your own portable TV. It comes with a DVI port that allows for easy connectivity to HD tvs (with the use of a DVI to HDMI cable of course). Media Center is useful when using its TV tuner capabilities.

Cons:

The computer is a bit outdated when it comes to internal hardware. The hard drive is a fraction of the size from what you may see in newer computers. The processor speed is no longer at its prime...lacking speed for multimedia users. Also, this notebook is only capable of holding 2 Gb of Ram. Although it only comes with 1 Gb stock its ability to be upgraded any higher is quite limited.

I've had this for over a month now, and it's more than I expected. The keyboard is the best I've ever used. Usually, when I have my laptop plugged in at my desk monitor, I use an independent keyboard and mouse and set the laptop to the side. But with this keyboard I've put the old independent in the drawer and flip the tablet screen all the way forward and under the monitor. This keyboard has great spacing, is very solid and responsive. As someone else noted, there is no Home or End key (which I use a lot) but the FN+Left Arrow and FN+Right Arrow do the same things.

When away from the desk I use the touchpad and even though the "button" areas are stiff, you can use multigestures on the pad to trigger button actions so I hardly ever use the "button" areas. When at the desk I use a mouse.

I run Win7, and on a Virtual Box partition, a Linux server. Both OSes run concurrently (I develop Win browser based controls for Linux servers). I run two monitors, one plugged into the laptop's VGA port and the other is being run by the CPU using a Plugable USB (165) Display Adapter. The 1.33GHz processor has no problem keeping up with the two OSes and CPU ran display.

Although I bought it primarily to use the the tablet concept, this jewel has replaced any need for a desktop. But, I do use the tablet 3 times a week for meetings with other designers on the team. I thought the note taking with the stylus would be the best feature, and while it is great, being able to sketch layout concepts on screen instead of scratch paper, and then email them to the participants, has been an extremely useful feature. But, not the BEST, that happened when one of the team members brought his iPad once, and was so humiliated he's never brought his toy a second time.

The only Con, the screen is glossy to the max and really is a fingerprint magnet. An anti-glare film took care of it though. If you plan on working out on the patio in the sun, which I do a lot, plan on getting an anti-glare screen.

Would I buy it again? My daughter's going to get one for her birthday ..... Will I buy it through Amazon? Of course.

Okay, I've only had this thing a few days, but having worked in IT for MS and Xerox for nearly 20 years, I know a thing or two about PCs, laptops, Mac's and hardware along with various software packages. Right before Christmas 2010 I started thinking about getting an iPad2, and noticed the range of various iPad wanna-be's. I was amazed at the offerings and their claims, yet many didn't have any reviews and most were coming out of China. I cringed at the thought of buying some unheard of device that most likely come with worthless warrantees and dubious at best hardware configurations. I even looked at Dell's offering along with EEE pc's little touch netbook's. I very nearly bought one of them thinking... okay... the processor is about the same as the iPad's, the only big differences being Windows instead of iOS and more drive space. I'd come to hate Windows and defected to Mac O S when Vista was released. My big problem was that neither the iPad or my iPhone had enough storage space (I needed much more than 64gb). So a touch netbook it was going to be. I originally saw the HP TM2T and fell in love... but not with the price. HP Direct was offering its tablet for about $1200 as configured, which is very generous with an Intel i5 -470UM processor, 4 gb RAM, 500 gb drive, ATI 5450 graphics card, wifi and Windows 7 Home Premium. Ouch! Pretty pricey for whatis really a netbook. I thought I might as well just buy the iPad and live with the space limitations. Even on Amazonthese were selling for as high as $1900! For that kind of moneyI could just buy a MacbookPro. I really then hesitated when I started reading some of the Amazonreviews of the TM2, TX2 and theTM2T.There are alot of unhappy folks out there. They complained about how it overheatedall the time, about how bad thetouchpad was and the keyboard, the design on the cover.. and any smallinsignificant thing they could think of. Because of all the bad reviews I had felt the iPad was my only choice. After 4 months I looked at the TM2T again as I saw a seller offering a refurbished unit at half the cost of a new one. This PC is just awesome! I've had it for about 6 months and I've been more than satisfied. It works just like a charm. I bought an external DVD plyer/ burner whose brand is HP also and it works with my PC just fine. The Touchsmart software is accessible and lauches easily, making it possible to listen to music, view pictures, create magnets, funny notes and taking goofy pictures and videos. The summum is the touchscreen that makes it possible to write notes quickly and insert genuine signatures on all types of documents (doc, pdf, rtf ...). I don't have enough word to describe this tablet PC but I'll make sure to post a video review as soon as possible.

After a couple of days researching this little gem, reading hundreds of reviews of it and looking at similar products to compare, I took the plunge and bought it in May. I'm a graphic artist so I wanted LOTS of RAM and took advantage of their free upgrade (bought at the HP site) to 6 GB of RAM and the 500GB SATA hard drive.

It came pre-installed with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium and I'd never used win 7 (what a refreshing change from Vista!). I really like the change and the speed. I've tested some of my 32-bit programs (RealDrawPro5 for one) and they work great. Everything runs lots faster than on the Vista, too.

The fingerprint reader is a real plus... no passwords to remember. However, you do have to swipe it 'just right' to get it to work on the first try, but usually now I get logged in on the 2nd or 3rd swipe, so it's not a big deal to me.

I might add that I'm 65 years old and a "techie grandma" who does know her computers pretty well. This little HP gem is outstanding and it was super easy to catch onto Win 7 for the most part. My grandkids loved the touch screen, the built-in video fun, the art program, being able to draw with their fingers, etc, almost as much as I do.

I invested in it because my 17" Acer laptop (with stinky Vista OS) was just too big to travel with and I do look forward to taking my tm2 the next time I have to fly somewhere.

I feel that it is a bit heavy for a 12.1" sized computer but the 6-cell battery and the mechanics for the flipping top might account for the extra weight (around 4 lbs). It isn't a deal-breaker though... it has so many amazing features that far outweigh the small stuff. The battery lasts a long time, too.

I agree about the super glossy screen that someone else mentioned... it's definitely distracting in bright light and is a fingerprint magnet, but it wipes clean with a soft cloth lightly dampened with just a little water. I plan to look for a glare-reducing screen cover for it, soon.

Personally, I have had no complaints except for the high price, but then it does SO much more than any of my prior computers that it's been worth it. I do suggest looking for discount coupons, since I found one AFTER I had bought it that would've saved me $300 off the over $900.00 price tag at the time I purchased it.

laptop performance is good. Good keyboard layout and screen is nicely presentable. The touch pad is quiet poor very hard to click and highlight and select, have to use a mouse most the time with it. Touchscreen it good but not great, can be a bit unresponsive and slow.

I'm really pleased with the purchase of this laptop. One thing to realize is that it's not the fastest or thinnest/lightest laptop out there. It's pretty much a standard laptop, with modest specs, but it does all many of the functions that a basic computer user out there is looking for.

Pros:

Speedy enough for most tasks (internet, word processing)

At first it seemed as if the screen was a bit blurry, but then I realized it was the opening HP setup window that looked bad. It's not designed for the optimal screen resolution of the LCD panel. I don't know why HP doesn't fix this, as it's the 2nd time that I've noticed this on HP laptops. The screen looks nice in Windows 7.

I'll try and update this review a bit more once I have more time with the laptop, including battery life.

Overall, a nice machine in this price range. You can find similar specs across the board with the different manufactures of laptops, but this would be a quality choice.

You need to understand where I'm coming from my most recent computer was running a Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. That being said this computer is a significant step up, and I think it's great. I think it's also important to know what I'm using this computer for....I work in a hospital and use this to log on to the hospital system, use Microsoft Office, and surf the internet. For these applications this computer is perfect. I've had it for about 1 month and have had no issues. It does come loaded with a bunch of HP software which can be uninstalled so that's not a problem.

The battery is listed as 4 hrs...it probably doesn't last that long I haven't officially timed the battery life but it's probably closer to 3 hrs. The case is plastic, the cold startup time is fast

Overall a great laptop for the price. It's fast with good wireless, and a crisp, bright screen. Having USB near the power cord leaves one less thing sticking out when using a thumb drive.

As with any low-cost option, there are a few quirks, mostly with the input devices. The Synaptics Clickpad is genuinely annoying, but easy to get used to. No tap zones, so I remapped the left button to a middle-click to get that functionality. The Touchpad Disable Zone keeps the cursor from moving every time you try to click. The keyboard is missing number pad access, even with the Fn key, so no Alt-codes are available.

I have seen this laptop at Staples for some time and waited for it to go down in price. I picked one up for $469 and say it is an excellent buy. It is true that the touchpad is annoying but it is easy to get used to or worst case, get a mouse. For under $600, you can get an AMD phenom dual core CPU (3.0 GhZ, 2mb L2 cache) along with a decent integrated graphics card (ATI Radeon 4250). Has 4GB DDR3 RAM and a 500GB hdd. The webcam is decent for a built-in unit and the DVD burner is standard.

Look, I work on PCs and I ran benchmark tests on this PC and it outperforms mobile Intel i3 and even certain i5 processors with a better graphics card.

tested it out, and found out that almost every major game can be played on this PC. This can play anything from Civ V to Mass Effect 2 & KOTOR. For integrated graphics, it is above average.

Overall, this is a great laptop with many features. Good for making/editing videos, multi-tasking, listening to music, editing photos, watching HD video, and playing mainstream games.

*UPDATE*

I just upgraded it to 8GB of RAM. Does it need it? No. I did it because I could and it made things much better. I quickly became used to the touchpad and it runs fine. The only negative I see is that the plastic housing is a little loose on the front right corner. I'll keep an eye on it but other than that it's great.

(I never liked using the built-in pad) This laptop replaces an older Toshiba that was a great laptop. This one is faster, lighter, and thinner. The sound is very good for a laptop. My only complaint is that the screen has no contrast adjustment and when I got it the picture quality was poor.(surprising to me since this is billed as an "entertainment" laptop) And yes, I checked the resolution, etc. Everything looked kind of washed out, and not at all clear. I was ready to return it. But now, after going through the whole color adjustment process (see owners manual) the picture is a lot better but still not great (my old toshiba had a better picture from day 1). But I am keeping it for its' good qualities! It's a good laptop for ~ $500, and will hopefully last a while!

I love this laptop. I was able to set it up and connect to my wireless network quickly. It has run smoothly since. The display is gorgeous, and they keyboard has a nice feel. It obviously comes with bloatware that needs to be removed, but I don't know of any laptop that doesn't. I purchased this to replace my previous Acer Aspire that I have had since 2005. The only reason I am replacing the 2005 laptop is because the screen is starting to go out. Other than the screen going out, I did not have a single problem with my previous Acer for 7 years (used daily for work and internet). I hope this one holds out just as long.

This laptop is beyond what I thought it would be. It is superb. It runs great works fast and efficiently. It's the best solid investment in technology I've ever made. This laptop is truly top of the line. I highly recommend it. Not just for work but also for playing games. All I can say is wow!

Ordered this laptop on the night of Wednesday 26th September. Selected the 2 day shipping option and it got to my skybox in Miami as promised on Monday 1st October. Took 2 days to get to me (Trinidad and Tobago) and another day for it to be sent out for delivery.

Hubby's a first time laptop owner, so he's having desktop withdrawal symptoms. I have no doubt he'll warm up to it eventually.

That said, as a laptop owner myself, I've tried out the laptop and it works really well. I have a v3-771G-9875 and it compares well, in spite of their obvious differences if you google the specs. As far as looks go, it's identical to mine, there is no difference in the housing.

Granted it's only been a few days, I'm very pleased with it's performance so far. Works well online, which is the main reason it was bought.

Will update later on if there's anything I'd like to add.

To anyone who's thinking about getting this laptop, don't hesitate, the price, shipping costs and processing time fluctuates day to day from what I've noticed since purchasing it here.....I was lucky to have the free 5-8 day shipping option (which, as I mentioned, I upgraded to 2 day at a cost) and it was able to process almost immediately.

I bought this laptop a couple of weeks ago (not from Amazon), and am very impressed with it. It's plenty fast for everything I've tried on it. After removing the bloatware that I didn't want/need, I installed a number of my own programs and games, and was pleasently surprised by the overall speed and graphics quality. For grins 'n giggles, I loaded Assassin's Creed on it, and the game ran great with no tweaking at all. A tremendous improvement over other laptops I tried.

I also have an older Gateway M6850-fx with dedicated video and RAM that I paid about 2.5 times more than this one, and I have to say, there isn't much difference in video performance between the two. If the Gateway wins out, it isn't by much.

I guess that I am responding to the person who was disappointed with his/her computers wifi speed, as a rule it is the wifi service itself and not the computer that is to blame for such problemsyou might check there. As for my experience with this computer, I love it, easy to set-up and use and faster than the Gateway I gave to my wife. No problems with Windows 8[I actually like it better than Windows 7] and really am pleased with the quality and design of the Samsung keyboard vs. Gateway. Not a gamer or professional user, just a regular guy type user who is amazed at the speed and ability of these new machines

I purchased this laptop when it was on sale.The laptop is extremely fast and has an incredibly large hard drive. Most of the competitors do not use the Intel processors, but this one does. The laptop is very lightweight and has a decent battery life. The laptop comes with Windows 8 and is easy to use once you figure it out. I am very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it!!

All my other electronic devices receive excellent wireless signal, while this laptop receives very weak signal. Added to this, it even drops wireless completely.

I would not recommend anyone to purchase this laptop.
