I bought this laptop to replace an old Toshiba that I have and it is great! It's lightweight, fast and thin. I am not much of a fan of Windows 8, but that is not the laptop's fault. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 initially and it seemed to have problems with the wireless card. So I decided to install Ubuntu 12.10 instead, and it is working just fine. The only complaint that I have is the battery life is not as good as I had hoped and it was hard to find an estimate before purchasing. It seems like the battery life is ~4 hours for coding/basic internet browsing. All told, it is a great laptop at a great price. I am very happy so far...

I bought this laptop in January 2013 now on May 21st 2013 my battery is not charging!!! I get the message plugged in and not charging, this I find is crazy since the laptop is less than 6 months old. I regret buying this brand and would never buy another toshiba ever again!

My only complaint is that the touch pad is super sensitive and is constantly registering unintentional motions, like side swipes and extra taps. Things are always popping up and swiping in, but of course those "smart" motions don't actually register when I want them to. Other than that annoying feature, everything else is great.

This is the worst computer, the keyboard is a horrible design, I had to return it to Toshiba after 90 days to fix the keyboard and they charged me for the shipping even tough it was under warranty. I would never buy a Toshiba again.

Nice machine. I'm not a heavy user and don't it for games. For my needs, this machine is great. I had to get use to Windows 8 it took about 2-3 days. I messed up the machine by changing settings and then had to reload the software but it has worked great ever since. I love the touch of the keyboard on this laptop (had HP Pavilion and didn't like the keyboard). I would never know it was refurbished, no problems at all. I have no problem recommending it. You do have to purchase software such as Microsoft Office. I found a free download of a similar program called Libre. If you know how to use MS Office you will know how to use this free software. It saved me $140. You can give them a donation to support the program but it is not required for it to download and operate. This product was a good choice and I like it.

ASUS Zenbook UX21E-DH71 11.6-Inch Thin and Light Ultrabook (Silver Review

This is a significant product, and a long-awaited one. Previously, if you wanted to have a notebook like MacBook Air, you'd be forced to switch to Mac regardless of how much of a Windows person you were. Nothing else on the Windows side was really even remotely comparable. Now, this is the first real alternative in the Windows camp.

Is it better than the MacBook Air? It depends. If you are a Windows person, it is. Previously, you had to be seriously biased to say any Windows-based laptop in the ultracompact category is better than the MacBook Air. Now, that can be an honest assertion. But if you are a Mac person, you might still say the MacBook air is better, which could be a debatable assertion, but a respectable one.

To me, ZenBook is better than the MacBook air, even if I objectively lay aside the operating system difference, because for my personal preferences I give a higher value to some of the strong points of Zenbook, especially its thermal performance. Your preference may be different.

THUMBS UP FOR BOTH MACBOOK AIR AND ZENBOOK

(1) COMPUTING PERFORMANCE First of all, in terms of the primary computing performance, including the CPU and memory performance, they're very similar, and both are very good. Asus' own tests say that the Zenbook is faster, but I don't feel much of it. This is, however, mainly because both are so fast. Comparing the speed of the CPU and memory of these two computers really has very little practical meaning. Only labs would be interested in doing that. Who is going to choose a computer over another because one opens up Microsoft Word in 1.5 seconds versus the other's 1.7 seconds? You see what I mean.

ZenBook does have much faster data transfer through its USB 3 port. It is easily multiple times faster than MacBook air's USB 2. But unless you routinely transfer very large files, I'm not sure if this is so important. Also, MacBook Air has a thunderbolt port which I've not tested in comparison with the ZenBook.

ZenBook also uses a much faster SSD (nearly twice as fast as that of the MacBook Air), but for some reason, I did not notice a very big difference in actual performance. Again, it's probably because both are already superfast for daily tasks. Gamers may tell a different story, but why do you buy an ultracompact laptop like these if you are a gamer?

(2) DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY Both computers are extremely well-designed and well built. To me, the ZenBook is almost a bit too pretty (a bit too showy and trendy to my taste). This is usually a problem I have with Mac products, but now, you've got a Windows product that beats that. I wish they would make a ZenBook in all black, and with a more plain business looking (but keep the feel of the high-quality and compactness). Had Lenovo made a similar machine maintaining the basic black square-edged ThinkPad style with the same compactness and thermal performance (see below), I would nearly certainly buy the ThinkPad instead. But there's nothing even in the radar screen on the ThinkPad side, so I caved in.

(3) BATTERY LIFE The smaller ZenBook (UX21) uses a 35W battery and has 5+ hrs of battery life, comparable to that of MacBook Air. I did not do a strict test. But both are very good. The key is that both laptops would run through a whole day, even a busy day. That's what matters. Once a laptop reaches an all-day battery life, further extension of the battery life really no longer matters that much, unless of course it then reaches much longer to become days or even a week. You will be doing an overnight charging anyway. It's the mid-day recharging that brings trouble.

You may ask, how can a five-hour battery support whole-day use? Well, this actually has something to do with the instant resume feature of these computers (see below), and you have to experience it in real life to fully appreciate its usefulness.

(4) TWO-SECOND INSTANT RESUME If you have got used to waiting for your Windows to boot up, you'd be pleasantly shocked by how ZenBook manages to always wake up in 2 seconds, unless you've done a cold shutdown.

Instant resume was a famous feature of MacBook Air, but now ZenBook completely matches (perhaps even surpasses) MacBook air on that. Asus designed a Super Hybrid Engine which enables the ZenBook to have a true 2-seocnd resume in the entire two weeks standby time. Asus claims it is better than MacBook Air because MacBook air's instant resume works only for a day of standby time, and after that would take 6 seconds to resume. I did not test that. But if you use your laptop on a daily basis, both these machines have reliable instant resume, and you will appreciate this feature in your daily use.

Instant resume is not just a cool feature. It is very practical and has a huge impact on user experience. For example, without such instant resume ability, a laptop would have to have a minimum of eight hours of battery life to reliably last through a whole day without causing headaches. With instant resume, a 5+ hour battery life will last a whole day for most people in most situations. You usually don't use the computer constantly every minute, and the reliable instant resume of these computers makes a seamless whole day long user experience with a single charge of a five hour battery. For example, while I'm traveling, I can set this laptop to go to sleep after every 5 min. of inactivity without feeling distracted. Only a laptop that has instant resume can work this way, or it will drive you crazy. In this situation, "instant" is the key word, and even a 5-second resume may feel bad by interrupting your natural workflow and you will most likely end up setting an auto-sleep longer than a minimum of 30 min. Instant resume is therefore a crucial factor in the matter of intelligent power management.

(5) REASONABLE PRICE for a similar configuration, the prices of ZenBook and MacBook Air are comparable. Many expected Asus to beat the Apple's price, but personally, I'm glad to see that they were even able to match it, particularly with a design that had very few compromises. One should note that a serious scaling factor is at play in the economics of making and selling these. Once occupied that enviable leveraging position facing suppliers and manufacturers on the bargaining table, Apple has an almost crushing advantage over others in the ability to make these new products requiring cutting-edge components at the lowest possible cost and sell them at a good margin. It will take time for commoditization to happen to let others to catch up. Before that, painful sacrifices (so painful that a company like HP has decided to quit) have to be made by the competitors in order to be competitive, even if assuming that they can come up with attractive competing designs at all in the first place. I just hope that ZenBook starts a momentum that leads to better and more affordable ultracompact laptops based on Windows.

THUMBS DOWN FOR BOTH MACBOOK AIR AND ZENBOOK

(1) Neither has built-in 3G/4G cellular communication capability to take a SIM card. I'm surprised that these newest laptops still don't have built-in 3G/4G cellular communication. This would be OK three maybe even two years ago. Not now. You need cellular communication for a device that can be called "mobile". I hope they will introduce this soon. Before that, to get cellular connection you will have to either use an external adapter or through your cell phone (either tethered or using a mini hotspot).

(2) Neither uses an IPS screen, and both are (unfortunately to me) glossy screens. An IPS screen would have superior sideview performance. New screen technologies competing with IPS are emerging, but not found on these, MacBook Air or ZenBook. But for daily use, both screens are very good, and probably a good point to bring down the price because an IPS screen would definitely have cost more.

THUMBS UP FOR MACBOOK AIR ONLY

MacBook air beats Zenbook on these areas:

(1) It has a backlit keyboard.

(2) Many insist that MacBook Air has an unbeatable Multi-Touch trackpad. That could be very well true. But I'm not a very sophisticated user of Multi-Touch and can't reach a conclusion on this. Both felt pleasantly good and smooth to me. If it were up to me, I still prefer the ThinkPad's TrackPoint.

THUMBS UP FOR ZENBOOK ONLY

ZenBook beats MacBook air on these areas:

(1) OUTSTANDING THERMAL PERFORMANCE Although MacBook air is already a quite cool laptop, ZenBook is much cooler still, quite noticeably. I am especially pleased by the thermal/cooling performance of the ZenBook. If there is one company that can do a thermal system design to beat Apple, it is Asus, and they seem to have done exactly that. They've been designing the world's best thermal and cooling solutions for computer motherboards from the start of the company, and no one else can claim better expertise than them on this.

To me, thermal performance is the number one critical element of a laptop performance. I'd rather have a cool and slower laptop, than a hot and fast one. Asus has made one that is cool and fast.

The thermal issue is not just a preference for comfortableness. It is a serious health concern. I believe the current designs of some laptops are outright crazy and reckless. The thermal radiation is likely to cause various skin diseases in less serious cases, and infertility or even cancer in worst cases. Sooner or later, this will become a focus of attention. The whole thing is currently masked by ignorance of mass consumer.

If you dispute with me, I have my slowly burnt fingers to show you.

(2) OUTSTANDING AUDIO You will have to listen to the sound of the ZenBook to believe it. I'm not aware of any other laptop that can match this kind of performance. Certainly not the MacBook air, which is pretty good in itself. It looks like there's something going on with Asus' audio group, which seems to be obsessed by the sound quality. When they first produced Xonar, a high-end internal sound card line, they didn't just match the then top consumer soundcard by Creative Labs, they smashed it. You may not be getting true high-end audiophile sound here on the ZenBook, but you seem to be getting at least some spillover of that audiophile obsession.

I have yet to test the sound input quality through a microphone. Personally, the microphone input quality is far more important than the playback quality because I use speech recognition for text input.

(3) OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR DISPLAY Both screens are very bright, but ZenBook is noticeably brighter under direct sunlight. My experience is that to be just barely usable under direct sunlight, the screen must have a minimum of 300 nits in brightness. Many laptops still have a brightness under 250 nits. ZenBook's screen is 450 nits. I cannot find the numerical specs for brightness of MacBook air, but it definitely feels dimmer under sunlight than ZenBook.

On the other hand, the MacBook air is whole lot better than many other laptops I've seen or used. Also, if you never use the laptop outdoors, this is not important. When used indoors, both screens would have to be set at much lower brightness than its maximum in order to be comfortably viewed.

(4) BETTER CONNECTIVITY ZenBook has a micro HDMI and a Mini VGA Port and MacBook air doesn't have any of these. HDMI would come handy if you connect the ZenBook to your TV, while the VGA port is important if you frequently connect your laptop to a larger external screen. I think MacBook air has its own way to make these connections to a Mac family product, but the difference is that with the standard HDMI and VGA ports, the connectivity is much more versatile in terms of compatibility.

OVERALL,

Asus has really made an all-out effort in designing and making these laptops. They're gunning at Apple, quite obviously. I'm even afraid that Apple will go after ZenBook's design by alleging infringement (could Apple have patent the tapered appearance of a laptop?).

It gave me a good chuckle that Asus official website for Zenbooks refers to Apple by calling them "Fruit Brand".

By the way, I should note that if this were an Apple product, you would already be hearing about it in all major headlines as if this were bringing new hope to the world, and you would also be seeing Apple fans standing in long lines praying for a chance to get one of these.

Summary: The Zenbook is exactly what I had in mind when I needed a lightweight, low maintenance portable to carry on business trips with me. Tablets or netbooks were not an option because of their limited capabilities and inadequate performance.

The Zenbook is very pleasant to look at and different, but not difficult to usein fact, my experience has been enjoyable. I've not experienced any problems described by other reviewers. Perhaps Asus is listening and my machine is a reflection of that.

I was surprised at the negative comments on engineering design, choice of components, etc. The emphasis on the keyboard and touchpad are understandable in that they are different the manual explains how to use the keypad and what to expect. I've had electrical "pops" on many laptop chargers, and this one did so about 5% of the time. Asus provides a solid warranty on its laptops. And, I have dealt with their support organization before on warranty work and service calls, with positive results, except one, where it took time for them to find a replacement laptop the outcome was satisfactory.

Pros:

1. The Elan touchpad works very well and has a sensitivity region that shrinks in size when you are typing on the keyboard so that you don't accidentally activate the touchpad while typing.

2. While a source of complaints, the keyboard and keys definitely enhance the look. Keys provide positive feedback with a "tactile click" created by the key giving way when it is pressed down far enough. It's also reliable key presses that failed were not the computer's fault.

3. When done working, I just close the lid on the machine to suspend my work (it has "sleep" rather than "shutdown" as the default option to power off your computer).

4. To resume (hours or days later), I simply open the lid and login -much the same as any laptop only the response is much quicker about 2 seconds. My wireless reconnects fast enough that I can go directly to the Internet and start browsing, or refresh my Outlook to get the latest mail.

5. The extremely small footprint allows me to store the computer anywhere, even inside a leather notebook that normally holds a pad of paper.

6. Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0 for greater speeds and new capabilities

7. Good speakers and audio

8. Tiny camera and good microphone. The mic even works with WSR.....not great

9. My old USB DVD/CD player works fine.

10. Crisp easy to read display

Cons:

1. The keyboard keys are the "chicklet" style found on other Asus, Apple, etc. computers and if you are not used to them they can be difficult to type on simply because they are flat across the top as opposed to the tapered keys found on many keyboards (e.g. ThinkPad) and are low-profile (i.e. short). Personally, all keyboards require some time to adapt to them.

2. I/O ports are limited but adequate.

3. Must carry the port adapters if you need Ethernet or VGA I personally don't need them.

4. 4 GB RAM limit, hopefully this will change with higher density chips. However, with the SSD being so fast, virtual memory use is not noticeable to me.

5. Wireless limited to 150 Mb/s fast enough for real-time data over wireless, but 300Mb/s would be desirable. Most routers still only support G (54 Mbps) in public places, hotels, etc. So I couldn't use it anyway.

In short, the Zenbook represents a significant step forward in mobile technology. I will benefit from Asus's innovatation and the reward/cost ratio is clearly on my side.

Update 12/18/2011:

I've used the computer daily for the last month traveling around the country without any issues. I carry it in my backback or luggage along with my Lenovo work computer. I'm actually starting to depend on the handy mouse pad gestures quite nice. The graphics chip can drive a full HD TV (1920 x 1080) and its own monitor concurrently e.g., watch/listen to amazon movies while I use run programs, handle email, and/or browse the internet on the lower resolution builtin display.

Very portable, convenient and reliable. Still very pleased with the purchase.

Update 2/10/2012:

Just had my first interaction with Asus support the laptop was accidentally damaged; I sent it in under the ADW warranty and it was back in my hands 2 days later Fixed! 1 day to transport in each direction and 1 day for the repairs. As expected, Asus covered the transportation in both directions.

Update 11/21/2012:

Just completed a 1 year anniversary with my Zenbook. I like it even more than before as ASUS continues to refine the drivers and I've found tidbits of info in the user comments here that are helpful like how to configure the touchpad. I plan to migrate to windows 8 the drivers are available, or, switch to one of the new touch enabled Zenbooks instead.

I bought this beautiful ultrabook at Frys last week and kept it for 5 days. I actually bought it right off the back of the truck that had just arrived. I was truly excited to get this machine(BUT): The keyboard is truly bad. The trackpad started off bad until I realized I needed to run an update from Asus to get all the drivers updated. The trackpad improved greatly with the updated driver, yet is still FAR lacking compared to a MacBook trackpad I do not know why).

Back to the keyboard. No driver can fix this keyboard. The keys are flat on top. The keys sit very close to the surrounding material underneath. You can push a key at the corner and touch the underlying material and not register a key push. I cannot replicate this on any other keyboard I have in the house. This means you bottom out the key before it registers the key push. Bottom line: you miss every fifth letter unless you hit the key right in the middle. I like to keep my job and I need to spell correctly. Therefore:

I took this machine right on back to Frys. The machine is truly beautiful (prettier than the MacBook Air). The sound from the speakers is very nice and it is much quieter than the MacBook Air (which we also own) because the implementation of the internal fan is much better on this Asus machine. The screen is nice too.

The keyboard sucks though and the trackpad is merely passable. I hated to take it back, but how Asus turned this into the Anus with a keyboard that doesn't work is beyond me. What screwed up committee let this happen?

I have been using the macbook air for the longest time but asus is my favorite brand after apple, when i saw this i couldn't believe the design and hardware thats included in such a small ultrabook, well after couple days of use i love it.

It is the fastest ultra book out there without a question and this comes from a guy thats a computer technician and has been using macs more than anything.

I have owned all types of pc's and laptops but for a ultrabook to be as fast as any device out there is a stunning job by asus to build such a beutfifull designed ultrabook and have all the best hardware inside.

This had a issue with the mouse and scrolling but guess what? Asus released a driver which already has fixed that issue.

Overall this is the best piece of product your money can buy. This machine is a beast.

I just received this laptop and absolutely LOVE all of the features and style. It performs excellently in all aspects EXCEPT for the keyboard. Just in writing this short review it has skipped 11 keys so far, mostly in the w,e,r,s,d,f region. It is so bad it renders the machine utterly useless for me and my typing style. However that being said it may work for anothers typing style. Luckily Amazon is taking it back and issuing a refund. Thanks Amazon.

I have an iMac in my office and I like it very much. So, when it came time for buying a home computer, I got the same iMac, but got the version with the larger screen and more memory at the advice of my wife. Well, we've blown two hard drives on the home iMac (covered under warranty, except for the lost files) and I'm rather annoyed. Nevertheless, I really like it as a computer. Alas, my wife likes it too and she's constantly working on eBay things. Too much so, in my opinion. I've been constantly on her for working at the computer all the time and blocking my usage. As a solution, she gave me an iBook G4 for Christmas (1907).

I really like this little iBook. It's been completely trouble free, and in that respect is better than either of my iMacs. It's fast and my enjoyment of working on it greatly increased after I purchased a Mighty Mouse to go with it. I'm a college professor and I give about 12 classroom lectures per week. I also give visiting lectures (about 2 per month) all over Southern California. I store my PowerPoint presentations in the computer and it works out very well. I simply walk into a classroom or hall, plug in the equipment and I'm ready to go. Everything works real well, as long as I'm the one setting it up. When others have set it up, I've had a couple problems which they then blame on Apple equipment. There's an "Apple Phobia" that's widely prevelant. That's nonsense. It's their own ineptitude that's the problem. This is a real nifty computer and works splendidly for my purposes.

I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

Came on time like it should. The packaging from UPS was a little damaged but not too bad. Opened it up to a nice a clean pc.

This thing is a beast! It will play all the latest games and do daily task without breaking a sweat! If you are looking at getting the Y510p make sure you get this model, it has everything you need.

I was comparing this with the HP ProBook 4530s the big differences were Docking station, SIM CARD slot and the i5 processor + Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I have been working with this computer for ~5 months since I have one at work provided by the company.

I love it. I have seen it perform very well using multiple resource hungry applications and it is fast.

To my surprise, although the SIM card slot is there, when you open it up there is no SIM card reader installed it is a separate module which could be acquired on eb** for ~$100.

This applies only for the HP 8460p XU057UT . There are different part numbers/models (XU057UT) with different specifications and prices. So do your research before purchasing

These were my first impressions. Now in detail:

The good:

-I love the keyboard and the spacing between the keys.

-The touchpad is big and it has a small golden "spot" which if you double tap, it disables the touchpad.

-QuickWeb This computer has a minimal OS built in one of the partitions which means that when the computer is shut down, if you touch the key between the wireless hardware switch and the mute button, it will start the computer with a linux based OS that is very fast and it gives you almost instant access to a web browser and skype. Yes, it allows you to connect wireless that is how you get online. The quickweb button looks like a globe and in windows will open the default browser.

-The aluminium case is nicely built and it feels nice, looks elegant.

-Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition. You can install xp mode.

-Camera is nice and it works fine.

-Docking port on the bottom I am using it with an external monitor and keyboard and occasionally take it with me on the road every now and then. The docking port will set you ~135 off here at amazon

-The ability of installing an extra HDD in the Optical Drive bay.

-Easy to open cover on the bottom for upgrades using the battery cover

-Up to 8 Gigs of memory easy to install.

Almost forgot to mention this thing comes with a western digital 320 gb so if you plan on installing an SSD my work computer has an SSD and the difference is huge.so the software that comes with windows which you'd use to create a system image asks you for a hard drive equal in size or larger an ssd 300 GB is ~$ 600 and up Or you can get a retail windows license and a smaller SSD. Probably System Builder disk/OEM win 7 would do you fine. note to note if you install windows 7 from scratch or you format the hard drive and remove the partitions, you will lose the quickweb feature as it resides in the partition _HP Tools.

-Comes with a lot bundled software some of it useful some not so, depends on your needs you can uninstall the one you do not need. I like the hard disk encryption and fingerprint reader plus the HP assistant will update all the drivers for you.

-Counterstrike Source is playable with the integrated HD3000 Intel graphics if you lower the graphic settings. This does not mean you can get it for gaming. You can do very very light gaming.

And the fan will start screaming and the laptop will get warmer not really hot on the right upper side of the keyboard where the chipset and processor are.

-Sandybridge implementation: This baby has USB 3.0 ports. 3 of them and an esata port.

-Has a DVD writer combo which is fine the usual.

-Onboard sound is ok.

The bad:

-The touchpad keys look like they are not lining up perfectly.

-The screen is not so great but on the other hand is a matte screen.

-The keyboard light does not provide enough light for you to see all the keys. Not a big deal to me as I touch type.

-I still can't get over the fact that HP did not include some useful disk creation software that would not have this limitation(equal or larger HDD). Or create the installation disks for the OS.You get disks with the drivers and software they provide. Not the OS disc.

Looks about the same as older elitebooks. Hinges are not as noticeable.

Improvements are many:

1) I5 runs cool and quiet. Didn't gotten hot on my lap even during installation of MS Office 10.

2) Solidly built. The area below your palms doesn't flex and nor does it flex if you hold the laptop from the corner.

3) Easy access panel to memory, hard drive, for upgrade, maintenance, and cleaning.

4) Decent battery life. Not as good as apple but getting there. Runs for 4-6 hours on standard battery.

5) Bigger mousepad.

Complaints:

1) Larger mousepad gets in the way of typing sometimes.

2) Continues to run when laptop is left unattended. Waste of battery.

3) A little on the heavy side, although expected with more metal parts.

4) Buttons have a little more travel than desired, especially the mouse buttons.

Best laptop so far. Looks like this one will last for a while.

Love this computer. The form factor is beautiful! The keyboard redesign (over previous models) is perfection. The brushed metal finish is wonderful and doesn't pick up fingerprints. The the trackpad is wonderful as well (bigger than most other computers). It does feel fairly hefty/rugged, but it gives it a very sturdy feel (just not as sleek as some of the pictures make it look).

The fingerprint scanner works like a charm.

Excellent fit and finish. Solid feel, not loaded down with bloatware. Excellent features: CAC reader (a plus for Military users) solid keyboard, removable back for upgrades, turn on/off switch glidepad, biometerics, usb port, spillproff keyboard, etc. Runs very nice with Win7 x64 and 4 meg. I have ordered 4meg chip to bring up to 8meg, should improve speed. Only complaints are edge on front bezel (a bit sharp) and screen could be touch better (sharper/brighter). For the price this laptop is a hit for HP, quality compares nicely to Thinkpad I used to have.

I was looking for a durable laptop, with a comfortable keyboard, and a matte screen. This laptop has it all! I spend hours on my laptop writing. This laptop does not hurt my eyes or my fingers. Its not the most modern looking laptop, but it is super sturdy. Its fast and the price was right. In fact, it was under my budget so I bought myself a new camera. I wish it had a backlit keyboard, but that wasn't a must. Overall, I am very pleased with the laptop.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because there is no easily accessible hard drive. I haven't looked at the service manual but I assume you have to remove the whole bottom cover instead of just a small panel. Otherwise this is a fantastic laptop so far (about 5 days of ownership).

The bad (some of these may only apply to certain types of users):

1. No easily accessible compartment is visible for a hard drive. Meaning replacing/upgrading the hard drive is not a simple task as it is on some laptops.

2. Like another reviewer said, the buttons for the trackpad are invisible. Assume a customer never reads a manual/skips all tutorials and this can be confusing at first. I had to disable the feature of being able to tap the touchpad to register as a mouse click since by sometimes clicking the actual button would register as a double click.

3. The integrated graphics/gpu switching is confusing. I wish I could force the Radeon GPU somehow. Furmark was reporting that it was still relying on the Intel HD graphics even though I had it flagged for performance mode. That was prior to the Feb 20 drivers on Samsung's site though, need to retest.

The good:

1. Thank Thor, the screen is great. Matte is how laptop screens should be. The trend of glossy screens needs to end.

2. After installing your own un-branded version of Windows, all you have to do to get your function keys working is install the Easy Settings software from Samsung. I don't mind this since the software is actually pretty useful. This is a pleasant surprise since most manufacturer-branded software is garbage.

3. Alright, I'm actually going to mention the Easy Settings software. It's surprisingly fast and useful. I'll be the last person on earth to admit something like this since I like control over everything that runs on my computer. But their software is nice. It doesn't try to get in the way, it doesn't look like crap, and it's fast at what it does.

4. Boots retardedly fast. Even after wiping out all pre-existing partitions and reinstalling my own version of Windows7.

Other thoughts:

1. The back lit keyboard and automatically adjusting brightness of the screen can be configured to be user controlled. I guess the other reviewer never looked for those settings. I have mine set to a fixed value which I adjust with the function keys. By default, it automatically uses the light sensor to adjust it.

2. If you have problems playing high resolution videos, especially with horizontal lines (looks like deinterlacing artifacts), update to the Feb 20 video drivers. Fixes that issue among, possibly others.

3. A ramdisk is not a bad idea for this at all. Just makes it even snappier. And with 8Gb of memory, you won't really miss 2Gb allocated to stuff like your temp/browsing cache files.

4. REGISTER YOUR LAPTOP ON SAMSUNG'S SITE TO GET 3 MONTHS EXTENSION ON YOUR WARRANTY! Takes like 5 minutes and totally worth it.

This is a well-built, well-outfitted laptop. You lose something in expandability in exchange for the very sleek design, but it comes pretty well outfitted stock so this isn't a big deal. There are a few nags, however:

1) Chiclet keyboard. It isn't bad by any means, but I prefer the keyboard on my old Dell Inspiron for typing. On the plus side, the number pad is very handy (note: the photos on Amazon as of the date of this review do not accurately reflect the keyboard layout; but then, the photos at Samsung.com don't either).

2) The track pad is a little annoying; as others have noted, the buttons are hidden under the pad, with the result that you will often accidentally double-click when trying to left-click, or move the cursor when you are trying to right-click. I've never been a big fan of track pads anyway though, so I ordered a new wireless mouse at the same time as I ordered the laptop. The track pad is certainly good enough to be useful, it just takes some getting used to.

3) Video switching between integrated and discrete graphics didn't work well out of the box. Following an update it seems to be better. Though be warned, said driver update is over 700 megabytes; I'm not sure how they manage to make it 4 times the size of the unified driver update (for AMD's desktop discrete graphics), but probably not practical if you don't have high speed internet available (and the update site is rather slow, I was only getting ~300 KB/s on a connection capable of 1.5 MB/s).

4) The screen looks great (and it's matte!), but does have very limited viewing angles, particularly in the vertical direction.

There are also some great features:

1) Sleek, beautiful design. Some reviews I've read mentioned poor fit around the LCD screen; not the case at all on mine, it is beautifully put together. Not quite Macbook Pro build quality, but then it is less than half the price for similar specs.

2) The Express Cache works well so far, startup is very quick (if not so quick as my desktop with an SSD).

3) Samsung hasn't pre-loaded a bunch of crapware. Pretty much just their update tool (a little clunky, but works fine), Norton, WildTangent game pack, and Samsung's own media player (haven't tried it). Not totally clean, but not bogged down too much either (I didn't even feel the need to do a clean Windows install, which is unusual).

Overall a great little computer for the price. A couple of niggles, but it is fast, has loads of storage, and looks great I'd definitely recommend it to a friend.

Let me begin by saying that this laptop deserves a 5 rating, but that I almost never give a 5 stars rating.

I was asked to suggest a good laptop for someone who does extensive international travel and after some serious research decided on this one; the user of the laptop is extremely happy with it. I spent some time with this device configuring it after its purchase and I am simply impressed. I will list the positive and the negatives that I have noticed in my interaction with this laptop.

Let me warn people to be very cautious when reading the reviews on this laptop, as many Apple fanboys and other web opinion generating teams are giving it bad reviews without actually using or owning the product. To determine the credibility level of some of the negative reviewers of this product check the numbers of reviews they have given in the past and the amount of time they have been reviewing. You will notice that many of the one star reviewers actually created their accounts less than two weeks prior to reviewing this product and have less than 3 reviews on Amazon. This is highly suspicious and smells of fraud.

The positive:

Solid, great keys, the touch pad is very responsive and not the obstacle some have claimed. The back lit keys are very useful and the lighting makes typing in the dark a pleasure. The resolution of the screen is extremely adequate, but not excessive,(remember that the retina display which incidentally is manufactured by Samsung is not a useful feature in say, watching movies), and for reading text and looking at images the resolution of this screen, 1600 x 900, is extremely adequate.

Extremely powerful and fast.

Well priced.

The laptop has a very quiet fan that goes on depending on the demand placed on the processor. Most of the time it is off.

The sound system is very very adequate and a pleasure to use.

It has a dedicated graphics card.

Built in Bluetooh.

It has a USB 3 port.

The laptop runs cool even when watching movies. Someone claimed in a review that watching Netflix films was a problem. That is absolutely false.

The self adjusting lighting property for this laptop is extremely useful as it makes reading in daylight quite comfortable. I have noticed that under certain mixed lighting conditions the screen will flicker. This is caused by the censor that decides on the lighting intensity of the screen. To remedy this issue, you can deactivate the self adjusting screen lighting, or just slightly change the angle of your screen.

Some people have claimed in reviews that the is a blue screen issue when this laptop does Windows upgrades. I have not had that experience with this device and have found updating Windows to be extremely trouble free.

The operating system of this laptop is housed in a solid state drive (SSD) and thus offer extremely fast on/off capabilities and also booting.

The fact that the screen of this laptop is non-reflective is a big plus as it allows users to use the laptop in very bright lighting without seeing their reflection on the screen. Just this feature is many times more useful than increasing the pixel density of the screen to an unnecessary level.

Updating the drivers of this computer using the Samsung updating utility was a pleasure, but make sure that the laptop is connected to an outlet when you do so. I encourage people to update their bios something that is almost trivial to do in this laptop using the Samsung updating utility program, but to ensure the update runs as smooth as possible deactivate your antivirus program while the update is taking place.

The touchpad of this laptop is extremely rich and requires that people spend some time familiarizing themselves with it. It is extremely responsive, but mine came at a lower level of sensitivity causing me to think it was slow, but it was easy to increase the speed using the system properties in Windows. This touchpad is loaded with features that will make surfing and using the laptop an pleasure, but if you are not inquisitive or don't spend a small amount of time familiarizing yourself with its many features, you will likely have some issues with it. Fortunately, you can deactivate the touchpad.

The Slot-Loading DVD mechanism makes it much less risky to damage the dvd drive when the laptop is in transit.

The maximum amount of ram possible is 8gig, but this is a lot more than necessary unless you plan on editing picture files of over 6 gig; also remember that Windows 8 will be less resource intensive than Windows 7 and thus that you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 with no problem, if you chose. Windows 8 is due for release in or around Nov of 2012. Then laptops like this will sell for much more after being upgraded by manufacturers to Windows 8. Because Windows 7 will be supported by Microsoft for at least 5 more years, it makes sense to purchase a Windows 7 laptop now when they are being sold relatively cheaply and upgrade later when the bugs of Windows 8 are taken care of.

The negative:

No vga outlet, but it has a miniature one the purchase of whose adapter will leave you 30 dollars short.

The battery is not removable.

Under certain writing angles you feel the edges of the laptop on your wrists and for some this could be a bit uncomfortable. I must admit that I was aware of it almost immediately but then adjusted my writing angle and forgot about it.

It would have been wise for Samsung to have made the laptop upgradable to at least to 16 gig of ram or more. With extremely HD video editing and picture editing growing in popularity and I see many people wishing that capability.

The battery life is not as long as claimed, 7.8 hours. I would say it is approx 10 to 20 percent shorter, depending on what you are doing with the laptop.

Slot-Loading DVD drives do not accept miniature discs, a problem with all slot-loading DVDs. Fortunately there is little use these days for miniature discs, and if any installation software comes in a miniature disc, you can almost certainly download the software to your hard-drive from the Internet.

Requires some adjusting to. Because this product has many new features, people that are not very inquisitive about technology or people with below average intelligence will find it a slight bit challenging. Fortunately, for such people there are Apple products; although for the same (useful) hardware specs the price could easily double or triple, not to mention the limitations imposed by Apple's jailyouin approach to technology.

Conclusion:

I would highly recommend this product especially to people that do lots of traveling and require an easily carried non-ultrabook laptop with *lots* of power and that abides by modern open standards in technology. If you have no experience using a computer and lack basic inquisitiveness or have below average IQ, you should avoid this product. This product is a great buy and once Windows 8 becomes available upgrading to it should be easy, and certainly since Windows 8 will require even less resources than Windows 7, you will have no hardware issues with the upgrade. I wish Samsung had made this laptop with user replaceable batteries and with more ram upgrading potential. Had that been the case I would be happy to own one.

I bought this laptop two weeks ago and have enjoyed it quite a bit. One thing I didn't realize when I purchase it was they've included an 8gb cache ssd inside (likely soldered on board). This combined with the proper drivers speed up windows boot quite a bit. I did wipe the laptop and install Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and it ran great. I didn't have any issues with finding drivers. The only problem I had to trouble shoot was the laptops track pad (a bit too sensitive in Ubuntu). Other than that one hiccup it works great. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, is the display. While the screen is quite a bit better than most laptops, It's still a tad odd if you don't have it angled just right. That said, for the given price, you're not likely to find an IPS panel in a laptop.

Solid construction, lightweight and an overall beast of a machine. These laptops are considered part of the Microsoft premium collection for a reason. You won't be disappointed.

I purchased my Samsung NP700Z5A-S0AUS from the Microsoft Store in February for my birthday. It was between one of the 15" MacBook Pros and this laptop. I needed something portable but didn't skimp on quality hardware (the reason why I passed immediately on the MacBook Air).

Buying from the MS Store gives me Microsoft Signature and allows my system to run effortlessly and I didn't have to deal with bloatware that you get from Best Buy and other retailers. Using this computer has been a dream for me. It's fast, efficient, handles my gaming adequately, and is a very well-planned machine. I know other reviewers are having a hard time adjusting, but what do you expect when you move on to a new model? I haven't had any issues with it.

Trackpad:

The trackpad works fine and if you're accustomed to using a trackpad in the first place, as opposed to just plugging in a USB mouse, you should have no problem whatsoever finding the "buttons". Of course, you have to tweak the settings to what you're comfortable with. Apple uses the same trackpad so I hope no former Apple users are complaining.

Keyboard:

I love the backlit, chiclet keyboard. It's quiet and makes it easy to type. Another thing about it is that if you spill anything through this type of keyboard, the laptop takes less damage because of the way it is designed. You can control the backlighting with just a touch of a button. The keyboard comes with a full numeric keypad (which at this point I cannot live without). I punch in numbers all day so it's a great feature. And don't complain about the chiclet keyboard either because it's designed by Sony with many manufacturers employing it: Apple, Sony, Dell, ASUS, MSI.

Screen:

The LED LCD screen is a pure matte. Like another reviewer mentioned, you don't have to worry about anyone looking at your screen because with this laptop, they won't see anything. It is a very bright 15.6" screen that Samsung has managed to fit into a 14.2" chassis so you still have a larger screen within a slim, sleek frame.

Battery:

The battery life is insanely long. I can have my computer on the High Performance battery setting without having to worry about charging it any time soon. The battery being built-in gives me relief of not having to worry about it falling out if my laptop is ever dropped in the future.

Ports:

This model has 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port that keeps powering your device no matter what (ex. a cell phone), 1 HDMI port, 1 power jack, 1 ethernet port, an SD slot, audio/mic port, and a slot for a Kensington cable lock.

Of all the laptops I have had, I've really taken a liking to this one. It's a stunning machine in and out. It was my first Samsung laptop purchase and it surely won't be my last. I just wish there were more accessories made for this computer.

I purchased this laptop in late 2009 for $500.00 brand new. For all its flaws, I could look past them knowing I'd never buy a then new computer that cheap. Not once have I had to take it in for maintenance! It's spared me the grief that a 2 year warranty would otherwise cover. I don't expect to have any serious problems with it. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 7 home premium, and ditch Vista. Mine came with a free upgrade, and it loads much faster.

Pros:

-10-Key pad! (This was what ultimately sold me.)

-Fast loading at startup and online.

-"Classic" desktop theme makes the computer compatible with older games and programs that required Windows XP to run.

-"Energy mode" makes the battery life much last for about 6 hours.

Cons:

-The shell is plastic. Try not to be careless with it.

-Portable, but not lightweight. (6.5 lbs)

-Unplugged, the battery life while internet surfing can barely make it two hours.

-Low end video card. (Nvidia 8200M) Will run "heavy" games like the sims 2, but this is not a gaming computer.

If you get this laptop at a reasonable price I would not deter you from buying it, otherwise choose another laptop. I am not against HP's cause I've experienced others that do not suffer from the same 'defects' as this.

1)Don't put this laptop on your lap, you will get 2nd or 3rd degree burns

2)Do not expect exceptional battery life (although the same can be said about half the pc's on the market today) but expect to be connected to the power cable for the most part

3)It may run slowly at times but to be fair be sure the cause of that is not user based

All in all it is not a bad machine but HP definitely needed to iron out these issues before releasing this product

For the price, I thought this would be a decent buy. The specs looked amazing on paper with a good processor, enough ram and memory. The big screen is nice too. It was nice having the HDMI and also SD/XD/etc card slot. Make sure you get the windows 7 upgrade too, it was well worth it.

Cons: As already mentioned,the battery is poor. I couldn't make it through a 2 hour class without it being plugged in. The battery was shot after a year. The computer itself heated up really fast... faster than any other laptop I have used; a friend told me that HP used cheap hardware for a couple of years, and that is why this model gets really hot. I also noticed early on, that the power supply connection was never secure, it seemed to wiggle easily. I also noticed that the CD drive was really loud, but that is understandable being it is a laptop.

My biggest complaint with this computer is its poor recording capability. This computer wasn't able to record anything of notable quality, from webcam videos to audio from lectures I attended (using one note). It always turned out bad, after multiple calls to customer support, re-installing drivers and updating them again, the problem was never solved. There are also multiple forums about users experiencing the same problems... just look up HP G60 recording issues.

This is exactly what I was looking for. It is light and works really well. I can adjust battery life and get up to 5 and a half hours.

I recommend this laptop. The keyboard is really nice and the touchpad works great, the two finger scrolling is awesome. The brightness adjustment is really good too, most laptops and desktop computers have it set so the brightness level jumps way too much and you only wanted a slight change. This one does it less than an inch, so slight reducing of brightness is great. the design is practical as well. I appreciate that the cover is not plastic but has a metal design. And it doesn't heat up fast or get very hot. Also, keep in mind this ultrabook has 2 hd, a solid state and spinning drive :)

I purchansed this laptop after much research and preffered to buy it from Amazon. However my experience is too bad with HP this time though I have always used an HP laptop. Here is the list of faults I found with the laptop and they are quite serious and annoying and won't let you work smoothly.

1) creepy system sound on every boot or windows resume

2) caps letter on without caps lock on after windows resume

3) shift key characters show up without shift key turned on after resuming windows

4) new window opens on browser on every single click after resuming windows

5) shortcut in my favorites get deleted and goes to recycle bin after resuming window

6) delete key does not work

7) while typing if press delete key it keeps on deleting all subsequent characters in the reverse direction

8) while rebooting or resuming window any folder or file click shows alert "want to delete"? Yes/ NO doesn't work -the alert windows keeps popping up

9) Windows photo viewer crashes

This laptop was not at all what I expected. Firstly I had to pay more than the advertised price of the laptop but I didnt mind considering it being an ultrabook. There is no backlit keyboard, no solid state drive and the mousepad has missing functionality, basically it is like any generic laptop in a sleek housing if I knew that I would have bought a sleekbook instead and would have paid much less for the same product. Dont buy this product unless u have money to waste.

Even though it was not brand new I expected that the seller would have sold me an item of acceptable quality and in working order. I started off working well then suddenly after one week the laptop refused to boot up and was not recognizing the hard drive. I took it to a technician who opened it up and said that the hard drive had slid out of its position because the screws that should have been holding it in position were missing. He quickly replaced them and inserted a device to keep it from moving again. It cost me a bit and the embarrassment was even harder to bear because I had boasted to my friends about my 'new' laptop. I plan never to purchase a used item online ever again.

Asus G750JX-TB71 Core i7 16/750 GTX770M Full HD NB Review

I purchased this from TigerDirect after comparing G750JX models and here are my impressions after one week with no regrets. You save $400 compared to the G750-JX-DB71 and get better components and upgrade options. First, I was willing to sacrifice the 256 GB SSD which wasn't worth the premium price to me considering current prices of SSD drives. Both models give you 16 GB RAM, but readers report that the JX-DB71 comes with 4X4 GB DDR3 SDRAM with all 4 slots occupied, while for the cheaper JX-TB71 you get 2X8 Gb DDR3 SDRAM with 2 empty memory slots which I immediately upgraded with 2 additional 8 GB sticks to max out 32 Gb RAM. The G750-DB71 comes with a 5400 RPM 1024 GB HDD, while the G750JX-TB71 comes with a faster slightly smaller 7200 RPM 750 GB HDD but with an empty drive bay which I placed a WD 750 GB Black (5 yr warranty). I personally like the increased HD space with faster drives on this desktop replacement gaming laptop and reserve the SSD drives for my ultraportable SONY Z3 (another sweet machine that I use for cross country and intercontinental business travel). Both models also come with the premium 3 GB Nvidia GTX770M card and thunderbolt port and, of course, the 4th generation i7 Haswell Intel processors. I purchased this to replace my 3 year old HP Envy 17 which I enjoyed but recently bit the dust due to the extreme graphics chip heat and poor ventilation design. The ventilation on the G750 product line is outstanding and it really stays cool despite throwing everything at it (you can see temperature profiles in other online reviews which are real). Another important feature is the ability to run 3 full HD screens which is why I used the Envy 17. I use the thunderbolt port to drive an HD DisplayPort monitor and the HDMI port to drive another HD monitor giving me 3 side-side 1920X1080 extended desktops. This was able to handle video editing and Photoshop/Illustrator work easily all at the same time. I no longer play games seriously, but installed Call of Duty 2 and World at War, and Brother in Arms Hell's Highway and they run beautifully in full HD settings just messing around. I'm going to try Battlefield 3 next. Overall, I'm glad I purchased this model over the DB71 model and saved $400 dollars which gives you an SSD drive; larger, but slower HD; and inconveniently uses up all the memory slots forcing you to waste memory cards if you want to max out your RAM. I spent an additional $120 to get 2X8 GB sticks from Crucial and $75 from Amazon to get a WD Scorpio Black 750 GB drive. For a total of ~ $1700, I have a Haswell G750 laptop with premium graphics and 32 GB RAM, 1.5 TB of fast HD space. Enjoy!

I forgot to also mention that this model also includes Bluray combo drive which the $1900 D71 model does not. Even better, when I checked the device manager, it seems that the drive is a Bluray writer as well, but there's no specific documentation that I could find and I don't burn Bluray disks. Bluray movies on this non-glare HD screen are a pleasure to watch. Another big reason I'm glad I chose this model.

The G750JX with GTX 770M is a great laptop. But the DB71 model is pretty expensive due to the SSD. I believe many people are willing to buy the G750JX without the SSD since everyone can purchase an SSD with cheaper price and higher speed. So this model is a good choice.

This model also comes with 16GB Ram (2x8GB), which means you can upgrade to max 32GB with 2x8GB. This is one of advantages since the other models come with either 2x4GB or 3x4GB or 4x4GB. So this model is great for upgrading to max 32GB without removing the original Ram and buying 2x8GB RAM more.

Also, it comes with the bluray drive, which even isn't included in the expensive DB71 model.

The only disadvantage is the wireless card. This model comes with the 802.11n wireless card instead of 802.11 ac wireless card. So for anyone who wants to use 802.11ac wifi network will have to buy either a USB adapter or 802.11ac wireless card. I've asked Asus representative about replacing wireless card and they said I could replace the 802.11n wireless card with the 802.11ac without voiding warranty as long as I didn't damage anything during the upgrading process.

Generally, this is a great model with reasonable price. It is only $100 higher than the G750JW ($1399) and you can get the GTX 770M with bluray drive also.

Most of the other reviews have already done a pretty good job of discussing the great things about this laptop, so I won't waste any time repeating that. I've owned it for nearly two weeks already and I don't regret my purchase at all. However, there are some cons here and there so I figured it'd be a good idea to post these here for everyone to be aware of before purchasing.

Cons:

Aluminum surface around keyboard and mouse is a fingerprint magnet and somewhat difficult to clean. It doesn't take fingerprints in the same sense that a glossy screen would, but when you touch the metal surface your finger will leave a dark mark on it and the only way to clean these marks is by rubbing them pretty hard with some sort of microfiber cloth or rag. Thankfully, ASUS provides a small cloth with the laptop so cleaning isn't a major issue. However, it's still a bit annoying considering how great the laptop looks when clean. This is probably my biggest complaint.

Trackpad isn't great. The mouse buttons, while independent from the tracking pad, are somewhat mushy to press and don't give a very satisfying "click". To many people, this won't be much of an issue either since with a machine this big you'll probably be using it on a desk where an external mouse takes care of this. On the bright side, there's a keyboard shortcut for disabling the trackpad so in case your palm brushes against it while typing or gaming it won't affect what you're doing. I'm not sure if this is a standard feature since this is my first Windows computer after using exclusively Macs, but this was a welcome addition for me.

ROG badges are located below the right side of the keyboard and on the back of the display. This is probably just personal preference, but I feel the laptop would look a bit more polished without the ROG insignia everywhere. Really minor complaint.

HDD & RAM bay underneath the laptop does not close completely. Near the top of the door, it refuses to lie flush no matter how I try to push it down. This may be just a problem with the one I got, but it's not big enough of a deal for me to ask for a replacement.

Comes with a lot of bloatware. ASUS tacks on a ton of weird apps that many people would never need, and adds McAfee in addition. I installed McAfee shortly after getting the laptop but haven't yet bothered figuring out what the rest of this software does.

Power cord goes into the right side of the laptop. I find this a little annoying because the cord is pretty short as it is, so I have to run it down the right side instead of wrapping around the back of the laptop and because of this sometimes I brush against the cord with my mouse.

Keyboard backlighting is uneven, especially on keys with larger icons, such as the Windows key.

When using headphones, there is some mild static in the background. It's mostly only audible when nothing is playing or during really quiet music.

When closed, there is nothing attaching the "lid" of the laptop to the base. Many laptops have some sort of mechanism that locks the two parts together when the laptop is closed so the lid isn't opening by itself (For example, Macbooks have a magnet that attaches the lid to the base) but with this laptop the lid has the tendency to wiggle open a little bit as there is nothing keeping it together.

Windows 8. Again more personal preference, but I know the OS is a selling point for a lot of people and many prefer Windows 7. I'm not sure how easy it is to downgrade as I haven't tried; for my needs Windows 8 works fine.

Despite all these little annoyances, I really love this computer and I'm glad I purchased it. I'd give it a 4.5 but as Amazon does not allow that the review will show up as a 4/5. Most of these cons will only affect some people, and a lot of them should not be deal-breakers but it's good to know ahead of time what to expect. I'll update this review in the future if I come across any other complaints, or if I end up re-evaluating anything. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

-Asus Usb Charger Plus port. This means that the first usb port on the right side will charge your phone even if the laptop is off.

I was on the market to buy a powerful laptop (aka gaming laptop) I kept reading reviews about different laptops and brands (Alienware, MSI, Schenker and Asus) so finally I decided on this laptop because of the balance between specs, design and price.

I've had this laptop for a month now and it has been running perfectly and i added a Samsung SSD. here are some points to consider why.

Screen:

The screen is beautiful and big and non reflective, loved playing league of legends, call of duty and guild wars, watching LOTR blu ray.

Size and weight:

This is a matter of preference, this laptop is definitely big but compared to other gaming laptops i find it's size and design better, and for the power inside it you have to go to that size (4 memory slots, 2 HDD slots), as for the weight it's heavy 4.8k but for me it's ok.

Sound:

the sound is good not super however it has a built in headphone amp which is great with my Sennheiser HD 558, but it's ALSO A DOWNFALL FOR SOME REASON ON SMALLER IN EAR HEAD PHONES IT PRODUCES STATIC.

Graphics:

So far i ran everything on it perfectly you can find the graphic card benchmark on www.notebookcheck.com

Hard Disk:

I added a samsung 840 SSD to boost performance and its great (tested performance in unzipping file, 3x the speed of normal 7200 RPM HD)

Cooling:

the cooling is great in this laptop i work with the laptop on my lap and it doesn't heat and runs silent barely audible, the only time i started to hear it was when i ran a game on high specs and it's on my lap with airway a little blocked.

The batter life was never good on this laptop for me. Otherwise its a good computer.

Now its pretty slow and i barely get 1 hour on a fully charged laptop.

I came to Amazon looking for this notebook because it has been the very best computer I've ever had.

Hands down.

It is and has always been fairly quick with very minimal work on my part (I got rid of Norton's and installed McAfee.) I have never had a single issue with this laptop. As a matter of fact mine is now 4 years and 5 months old and is still running like a top. I wanted to get another one in case mine ever dies so I started looking to see if they are still made. My only complaint, as someone else noted on another site, is the have a cheapish CD drive door but mine still works and still works fine so I shouldn't complain about that even.

This laptop is quick, not prone to errors,smudge proof, great screen, and even more unbelievable, still on the original battery even after 4.5 years!!!

If I can't find this at the time mine dies I will stay with the Sony family of products for sure!
