I love this laptop. Slim, yet still has a DVD drive (not so common these days). The touch screen makes clunky Windows 8 so much easier to deal with. The touch pad is very responsive, easy to right and left click. Despite being thin it feels sturdy and doesn't flex when you put pressure on it. It can do some serious yoga, the screen tilting back almost 180 degrees. Backlit keys are fancyand for a $500 laptop, it looks really classy. Everyone who sees it goes, "Oooooh".

My love for this laptop doesn't blind me to its faults, howeverit's a budget laptop with a touchscreen, and that's that. I haven't tried to run anything big on it yet, but its speed is not anything spectacular. Should be fine for average web surfing/word processing use but it's nothing flashy. I also don't like the way the keys depress. They feel a bit mushy. I find the speakers a little tinny, though you can get fair volume out of them. They're weirdly located on the bottom of the laptop. The three USB ports are all right next to each other on the front left side.

Still, I would definitely buy this again.

I bought this computer for school from amazon to replace another Acer computer that I had broken (I dropped it and the screen shattered. I highly recommend the Squaretrade warranty, I got my money back no questions asked). The old Acer was only a year old and had Windows 7. I was hesitant about Windows 8 at first, but after reading reviews and watching demo/tutorial videos I decided that I wanted to try Windows 8. I am so glad I did! If you're going to get a computer with Windows 8, make sure to get one with a touchscreen like this one! No sense in upgrading to a newer OS without getting all the functionality out of it. I have found the OS to be incredibly fun to use.

This computer DOES have a DVD drive, I just used it yesterday to install Office 2007. Love the backlit keyboard so I can work at night without a lamp. As others have mentioned there is no indicator light for whether the caps lock and num lock are on/off. This is only a minor annoyance to me. The keyboard is comfortable to type on. I haven't had any trouble with touching the mousepad by mistake while typing, but I also use the laptop on a lapdesk that has a padded wrist pad that elevates my hands a bit and makes typing more comfortable. To be honest I don't really use the mousepad at all, I like using a hand-held mouse better. Doesn't have anything to do with this particular laptop though. The touchscreen is very responsive and I don't notice any fingerprints on it unless the screen is on a completely dark color. Can't say anything about the battery life since I use it plugged in 98% of the time.

Setup was easy. Be prepared for a TON of updates the first few days though. The second time I restarted it I had over 100 updates to install. It was a time consuming process the first day or two. I've been having a lot of fun personalizing everything though. Apps are addicting, so watch out!

I shopped on amazon for DAYS and did a bunch of research and read every review. I am 100% satisfied with my decision. For the money, this is a great computer. Glad I bought the Squaretrade 3 year accident plan. Great peace of mind for an extra $122. Any student should be stoked to have this computer, I know I am!

I've been using this laptop for a month and there are several features that I like--one that I don't. I like the keyboard layout with a number pad to the right (great since I do part-time bookkeeping with this) and the backlit keyboard helps me to see what I'm doing with just a soft light on in the room. I'm getting used to Windows 8 quickly and it works great with the touch screen. The screen is wide and the computer is very light and thin for it's size.

The problem that I had is that the touchpad is large, flush with the computer casing and located to the right of the keys. My left hand has to rest on it to type so I was always accidentally opening apps or doing something weird with the mouse. I finally figured out that it's easy to turn the touchpad off. I like to use a mouse, so this isn't a problem for me. It's easy to turn the touchpad on and off with the "Fn" key + "F7" and you can turn it right back on again if you would like to. That's the only reason I gave this computer a 4 stars instead of 5. (I went to a store and looked at other brands of laptops and the touchpads all look pretty much the same as this one. Not sure why they have decided to make it so large and flush with the computer case.)

Overall, I highly recommend this computer. Great price at $499.

Pros: Fast, light, quiet, and a good picture.

Cons: I hate Windows 8, battery doesn't last as long as I'd like, there are no left/right buttons on the mouse pad, touch screen doesn't always pick up touches accurately.

I picked up this laptop during one of the specials that were offered and so far I've been pleased with it. I had an HP laptop that was on its last legs after 5 years of moderate use. Hopefully this one will be able to last me 5 years as well. Windows 8 is a pain, and this thing also comes with a bunch of bloatware. I deleted what I could but I'd have to really dig into it in order to weed out the rest. Microsoft seems to be trying to follow the footsteps of Apple while looking over to Google for additional inspiration. Unfortunately they're just moving farther from their bread and butter office software. Anyway, that's enough of my rant on them.

For your basic or entry needs of computing, this laptop seems to be near the top of the pack in its price range. I did my research and so far so good.

Anyways, it's a very nice laptop! I wanted to get a MacBook Pro but I heard Mac's don't really acquire Java & most of the students have a struggle on that. THIS ONE ROCKS! reminds me alot of Macbook pro! I fell inlove with this laptop! I was all inlove for months now! Still inlove until now! Very fast! No worries at all! Trust me, you're not gonna regret getting this laptop. okay? don't believe other people here saying it's a bad laptop cause to be honest, this laptop rocks!

The only thing I don't like is the speakers! It's at the bottom & it's slow unless you put it up high then it gets better. No problems anyways cause I always use speakers so no problem. My friends wanted the same exact laptop!

I bought this laptop from best buy in early September of 2010. I would have given it 4 stars, but after only a month of use it quit working. I think the graphics card may have overheated. The system lights would come on but nothing showed up on the screen. Also it happened overnight when the laptop was on, but not in use.

Luckily hp fixed it free of charge and it is working great now. The ram, hd space, and processor are all really great and pretty fast for the price of this laptop. My only complaint is that the graphics card only has 128 mb of dedicated memory which is not great. Luckily the proccessor makes up for it and i can still play most new games on low settings. Older games work fine.

Also the track pad is a pain and not comfortable to use. you just have to push down a little bit to hard to click. Fingerprint scanner works great, and also the HDMI output is great to watch high def movies on a tv.

Overall its a good buy but if youre into gaming or other graphic applications get a laptop with less hd space, a slower processor, but a better graphics card.

I have had nothing but problems with this laptop. The hard drive crashed and I had a friend who replaced it for me. Now the battery is bad and needs replaced. That is with only occasional use and minimal downloading. I also bought my sister the same computer and hers doesn't even work anymore! Piece of junk and wish I had never bought it.

An Awesome laptop with possibly the WORST touchpad on the planet...I mean i haven't been able to type one whole sentence for 6 months now without having it get erased or minimized...It seems that the body of the computer senses palm heat and makes the pointer jump all over...Don't listen to the people that tell you that you can fix it through settings...because you can't...It's actually a two handed touchpad and I have forgotten the good old days of using one hand to navigate...I actually use two hands...one to navigate and one to push the left button...While writing this review I actually had to rewrite it twice and maximize google chrome 4 times...I swear it's as if the people that designed it weren't even thinking about testing while they were in development. ..Because if they did they wouldn't have put it on the market like this...Laptop speed and extras...A++++...

Day 1: Wow, I really dislike this keyboard. I really wish I had paid more attention. I understand changing laptops means changing keyboards, and that brings a period of awkwardness, but this keyboard hurts.

1) The keyboard layout has been narrowed by removing the space from between key-groups, so I'm finding it impossible to locate the arrow keys and navigating the function keys without taking my eyes off the screen to look at the keyboard. Consider this: This 16:9 laptop is 1.2 inches wider than my old 16:10 machine, yet the keyboard is .75 inches narrower. [EDIT.3.2013 Using adhesive mini bump dots has made the keyboard navigable.]

2) The PageUp/Home and PageDown/End keys have been combined. PageUp and PageDown are the default functions. The Fn key must be pressed to access the secondary Home and End functions. I hate that this was done, but if it was truly necessary, I wish they had done it the opposite way, making Home and End the default functions. (Update: I was able to fix this well-enough by running KeyTweak.exe)

3) The Fn key must also be pressed to adjust the volume or mute. So it takes two hands when you need a quick volume adjustment/muting.

4) Most of the light emitted by the keyboard comes from under the keys. This is an issue because I almost exclusively use the laptop while sitting in a recliner. From that angle the bright light from under the keys way outshines the keypads. I'll have to find a way to increase the unit's tilt in my lap to make this problem go away.

5) The tactile bumps on the F, J, and 5 keys are nearly non-existent and I expect they will wear away soon.

6) So it occurs to me just now; Will I be able to replace worn F and J keys for this keyboard.

7) The Windows Start key is moved to the right side of the space bar. I understand why they did this, but with the particulars of Windows 8, some folks may have preferred it stayed on the left.

Day 2: Everything seems top notch. 2-boxing EQII at max quality has been all smooth goodness. Skyrim is beautiful, CODBO1 rocks. The sound quality is pretty impressive and the the fast boot from off the SSD is really sweet. The optical disc drive however is kinda on the slow side; but I have to say, it reads damaged DVDs like no other drive I've ever had. It might be that when it comes to optical drives, slow and steady wins the race. Also, the unit came with nearly no junk-ware, so purists won't have to spend much time striping it down to the essentials. Lastly, the Power button and LED indicating sleep-state both blink. Besides disliking blinking lights, this is just plain annoying when you set the unit to the side in a darkened room. I suppose this can be avoided by having the unit go into hibernate instead of sleep, but I chose to use a bit of electrical tape and a static-cling sticker; problem solved.

Week 2: The installed 128GB SSD is on the small side. Mine arrived from MSI with 43.5GB free space. I understand data goes on the 750GB HDD, and Windows' 'Library' concept makes that easy enough. But after installing some games and a bunch of applications it got down-right cramped. So I'm already migrating over to a 256GB SSD.

Week 6: Over-all, a very solid machine. I like it alot, but if I had it to do over again, I would not buy it. It's the keyboard. Whether I'm healing the tank or re-naming files, wandering Freeport or navigating a spreadsheet, this keyboard has me taking my eyes off the screen all the time. So unless you just have to have it now, I recommend waiting till next summer. By then numerous manufactures will be offering up comparable configurations, most of them with more conventional keyboards. And by then, probably three to four hundred dollars less. Great computer at a good price. I have had the computer for several months now and am very happy with it. It is thick and very well ventilated. I expect it to last well. No slimline notebook here. Keyboard looks great and has a ton of backlighting options.

The power cord plugs into the middle of the back of the computer, which I don't love, but wouldn't prevent me from buying it again.

I'm an avid gamer, and try to keep my gaming laptops semi up to date. I'd say about every 3 years (sometimes that's pushing it) it's time to upgrade to new tech. It comes with a useable boot SSD, but if you want even better performance swap out the 750GB 7200 RPM HDD with another SSD and you're set to go. As soon as I verified everything was working properly, I replaced the stock 750GB with another 512 Crucial SSD and don't regret it a single bit. (Although, this does unfortunately void the warranty). And actually, while I'm on that subject why? A simple HDD upgrade or RAM upgrade shouldn't void anything in my opinion. These are easy, non system-threatening upgrades! Ok, other than that, I'm getting amazing performance on everything cranked to it's highest settings. Boot time is 6 seconds to Win 8. Still miss Win 7 but I'm making the best of it. If I had to do it all again I'd get this same model. The keyboard colors give it an extra "wow" factor, and make gaming in the dark so much easier. Getting tons of games reinstalled takes time, but it's great having a fresh system. Good stuff!

Love this laptop. Played every game you can imagine on max settings with no hiccups. Speakers sound great. Display is bright and clear. Not going to find a better bang for the buck. Windows 8 is not my favorite but I'll get used to it. Highly recommended!

First off, I would like to say this computer is great if you are sent one without any problems.

Hope to Jeebus you don't get one with problems. I was sent a broken computer, and let me tell you, I am being punished for it.

There is something wrong with the internal hardware, not sure what, but the scrolling ability on my computer would go haywire after just a few minutes of use, and would render the computer itself almost useless. For this reason, it was extremely difficult to type an e-mail to tech support, so I tried to call them instead.

If there's one thing you should know about MSI tech support, or customer service, is that one does not simply call MSI tech support, or costumer service. Because you will get no answer. No matter how many messages you leave, or that you call in the middle of work hours. The recording will talk at you, then promptly give you the figurative finger.

After cursing and raving at my broken new computer while trying to type e-mails with a cursor afflicted with tourette syndrome, I finally got a helpful reply with information to send my computer to the RMA department. This was two months later. I was so happy they they were finally going to fix it that I almost didn't get annoyed about the fact that I had to find my own shipping box to fit this behemoth computer, buy my own package materials, and pay for the shipping. But then I got annoyed. I live in Alaska.

The story doesn't end there. I get an e-mail today from the repair department with pictures of the package, and it looks like someone dropped it in a muddy puddle, then a velociraptor promptly stomped on it after chewing on it for a while. Despite the big red sticker stating "FRAGILE! HANDLE WITH CARE!!!1" plastered right on the front. Now, I know it's not their fault, but they want another 300 dollars out of me to repair the resulting -surprisinglysmall dent to the corner of the blasted machine. And for me to send them all my credit card info.

So, yeah, you can buy this computer if you want to take a gamble that you will never have to deal with MSI after the purchase. I read that customer service sucked in previous reviews before buying this computer, but I never thought I would have to deal with them. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and slap myself in the face for wasting 1700+ dollars.

I bought this laptop after doing quite a bit of research, looking for a replacement for the family computer at a reasonable price point. Considering the value of the computer against the price, I think this is a good deal, though this machine is not ideal for all uses. This computer is good for general use, such as surfing the net, playing the occasional game or working on spreadsheets. It's neither a heavy gaming rig nor a heavy-duty business machine, but it is sufficient for almost any everyday task that can be thrown at it. This is the ideal for which I was looking. In that capacity it does itself proud.

Having previously bought a Hewlett-Packard laptop I had hoped that this machine would have the standard media set, meaning recovery disks and documentation, but this is not the case. HP has elected to require the owner to make their own recovery media, which is a cost-saving measure for HP and a tedious annoyance for end-users. To be fair, it seems that most manufacturers have taken this route, so this should come as no surprise. Making recovery media requires 3 single-layer DVDs, and the creation tool says that either DVD+R or DVD-R platters are acceptable. I did not try dual-layer media.

On first boot, the user is greeted with a welcome/setup application that guides the user through the process of setting up wireless networking, naming the user account and of course registration. I personally think this application is very cartoony in appearance, using the image of hands to walk you through turning pages and transition screens. While it's clear HP is targeting home users with this approach, it seems out of place for more professional use. It's a personal preference, though, and it accomplishes the end goal.

Once booted up into Windows 7 the first time, the barrage of "Register Me" and "Activate this Software" popup windows began and it not only was distracting and annoying but it interfered with my personal setup. In the middle of creating the recovery media, a window popped over top of the recovery application asking if I wanted to make recovery DVDs. I would have preferred that it detect the process in progress, or at most give me a system tray notification instead. Though annoying, this can be dealt with either by activation/registration or performing an uninstall of the offending application(s).

My first order of business was to strip the extra stuff I don't want from the OS. I removed MS Office 2007 trial and I removed all things Norton/Symantec. This was mercifully very easy and quick. Now, that said, for the user that actually wants these applications (and I suspect there's quite a few people who do) having these pre-installed will be very convenient. For me, I have no intention of using any of these as I have software for which I have licenses already, so I removed them.

Some people have difficulties with the touch pad, though I have not. I personally dislike most laptop touchpads and this one is no exception though it works as it should and is flush with the rest of the plastic shell. That said, the touchpad "mouse buttons" are actually one unified rocker button that is stiff and unresponsive.

The keyboard is another matter entirely. Though I have had no issues with the keyboard, I am concerned that the wireless adapter is enabled and disabled through the F12 key, not separated from the rest of the keys on the keyboard. This is asking for trouble for people that do not use a separate keyboard. HP can expect complaints about the wireless getting cut on and off via bad keystrokes.

Another puzzling design decision is that there appears to be no latch for the laptop lid. It simply opens or closes, no more or less. In my case this is not a major issue as the system will sit on a desk and not move; for those on the go this could be a potential issue, especially if the computer is dropped. Keep this in mind.

None of the ports on this unit are on the back; all of them are located on the sides, including the power and the VGA interfaces. At first this bothered me. I can see some wisdom in it now, though, because of the hinge and the ability to move the system flush with the back of the desk which is against the wall. Again, this is beneficial for me. If you are left-handed, though, this could be very problematic as two of the USB ports, the HDMI port and the VGA interface are all on the left and if all of those are plugged in the cords will interfere with external mice. In my case I am connecting an external monitor, mouse and keyboard so the system does not need to be directly in front of the user.

In terms of performance, this is a peppy system. There's 4 GB of RAM, expandable to 8, which gives Windows and applications plenty of breathing room. The processor is 2.13 GHz with 2 cores, sufficient for most software (though not for high-end games). The hard drive is a 7200-RPM drive, a very noticeable upgrade from the 5400-RPM drive in my older HP. The graphics adapter is really the only weakness when it comes to speed, but even so it is still a decent graphics adapter and will work just fine for the majority of users.

I do like the styling with the interesting texture and color of the plastic shell. It is most certainly not necessary but it's a break from the ordinary that makes this laptop a little more interesting. HP did a great job with making the touchpad seamless, too, which will keep crud from gathering in the edges.

Overall, I am satisfied with this system. It meets the needs for which I purchased it, it's stylish and it performs well. It is by no means perfect, but at the price point it's more system than I could otherwise ask for. If you need a good workhorse laptop that is affordable, this is a good candidate. Be aware that there are a few negatives too, such a port placement, when purchasing, though an argument can be made for the negatives being no more than personal preference.

For the most part, this laptop does everything you'd expect it to. Windows 7 has some quirks, but I'm liking it for the most part (coming from Vista is a much easier transition than I'd imagine coming from XP would be). The HDMI connection is a snap to use (Turn on TV, plug in cable, the computer switches all the video settings correctly. Unplug the cable and the computer switches everything back to the built in display automatically). Bloatware was fairly minimal and easy to uninstall. Not coming with backup discs is annoying, but Windows lets you make a set yourself, so at least there's something. The battery lasts me 2-3 hours depending how much video I watch. The 4GB of RAM and 320 GB hard drive make this a good value. It's a laptop and it works.

The only annoying software related dislike is the defualt of locking the Fn commands as I use the F1, F2, etc keys a lot. This requires messing with BIOS to turn off, but would be useful for an average user who doesn't understand what F-keys do.

I'm really annoyed with the input devices, though. The keyboard is mostly standard, but there's a couple of small things that annoy. The quick launch buttons on the left are useless and get in the way (I always hit "calculator" instead of Ctrl). Esc is shifted over the quick launch buttons, so I keep hitting F1 instead of Esc and F2 instead of F1, etc. There's nothing to differenciate the arrow keys from the other keys, so it's hard to use them without looking. Typing on the keyboard is nice, though.

The trackpad is really annoying. It's difficult to use without looking. If you have two fingers on the pad, it doesn't respond at all (if there's multitouch, I haven't figured out how to turn it on). It's fairly easy to accidentally touch while typing. When I close the lid and open it, it doesn't respond the first time I touch it (which leads to me closing windows and tabs accidentally trying to get the pad to respond). I've eventually learned to work with the trackpad, but that involved changing how I type and use the computer by holding my wrists up, which I really shouldn't have to do.

For the price I paid ($120 less than Amazon currently offers), I can live with the problems. Otherwise, they'd annoying enough for me to look at another manufacturer.

EDIT: Less than a year after buying the laptop, the battery is dead. It barely holds a charge (about 20-30 minutes) and dies unexpectedly (while reading over 20% left on the meter). I never kept the computer plugged in with a full battery charge (charge the battery, unplug, use down to 15-20%, charge again) and used it about 8 hours per day (off at night and while I'm at work). The death of the battery was very sudden: it seemed fine for the first 8-9 months of use, started turning off unexpectedly for a couple of weeks, and then completely failed to hold a charge.

I am a college student and, like most college students, I'm pretty broke. Not only am I just a broke college student I am photographer and photoshop lover! I am going into photogrpahy and the computer that I had was over seven years old and bearly running. I needed and I mean needed a good laptop that had all the memory capablity that I needed to run PhotoShop and whatever other photo editing programs I needed.

You could say that my needs for the right computer and my wallet size didn't really see eye to eye. Most of the computers I looked at(that I could afford) were always laking someing. It could be the screen size or the ram or some other little quirk that wouldn't fit my needs. So I was stressing!!

When I ordered this laptop I was so nervus because if it didn't work the way I needed it to then I would have been in a very sad state of mind! Not to mention this is one of my first orders off of Amazon!! (I was a nervus wreck waiting for my order to come in and trying to upload and install photoshop while holding my breathe and crossing my fingers that it would install perfectly haha).

When my laptop arravied it was perfect! I uploaded Adobe Creatve Suite 3 and the Topaz Labs bundle to it and it works like a charm! Oh, and I can work in PhotoShop AND listen to Pandora or ITunes at the SAME time!!! It's amazing! Even with all of the programs I have installed it is so so so fast!

If you are a college student and a photographer or photoshopper and are stressing about finding the right computer then this one is the one for you! You don't have to be a college student or a photographer to love it, but trust me you will love it!!!

DO not purchase this laptop. I bought one and in two months the screen stopped working. Additionally, I heard that this has happened to a few other people that have purchased HP Laptops. Worst part about it is that HP would not help me b/c they said it is out of the "21" day warranty. What kind of company only covers their product for the first 21 days. At least offer a 90 coverage. This has been a very disappointing experience for me. I highly urge anyone considering purchasing this product to rethink their decision.

Fist off, by the look of this unit some might say it looks alot like the Macbook pro 13", with that being said, looks are NOT everything, This HP G62 packs alot of KICKASS punch, Unlike the other person who wrote that he's having a track pad problem.....GET GLASSES if you cannot see the track pad. One of the features regarding the track pad is the shut off, you just tap twice on the led thats located on top of the pad too disable the track pad, of which then an amber light comes on letting you know that you have disabled the track pad, too enable it, just tap twice and your good too go, this feature was made if you are going too use an external mouse. Now as far as This unit's functionality, its awesome, all hard drives depending on your configuration, are @ 7200 rpm,the base CPU is the new i3 core by intel, of which is upgradeable too the i5 or i7. It also features the new L3 cache, giving you a smoother ride then the older L2 cache systems. The system bus is well over 1066MHz, uses very fast DDR3 ram of which this unit is upgradeable too 8 gigs of ram. In addition the graphics are in true native, and watching a dvd was an experience, with the Altec Lansing audio surround. OK now for multi-task, I have compared it too the Macbook Pro, With the Intel core 2 duo running @ 2.8 Ghz, the results were very impressive, The HP (base model) not only beat the Macbook Pro in muli-tasking, but also ran apples own software like itunes and others with little effort, running adobe CS4 was so fast I could not believe what I was seeing. As far as surfing the web, I have never been on a mobile device that has speeds that are just unbelievable. HP and Intel have put together a product that surpasses systems worth $2000 and up. Of coarse if you deside too get your HP G62 FULLY loaded with the i7 intel cpu, blueray, 500gb hard drive, and dedicated graphics, and built in bluetooth, this unit will run you about $2400. Now weather you get the base model or upgraded version, 1 word....Kickass, its about time a PC company challenges the bar, weather your a casual user or an extreme user, makes no difference, this unit is built for decades too come! I have found this computer to be excellent. However, when I purchased it despite the horror stories about windows 8. The system is slow, cumbersome and skips from one window to the other. I have contacted Microsoft and Acer. Neither of them wants to help me go back to windows 7 which was an excellent operating system. The problem is that I am 74 and the $114 to purchase windows 7 is costly. My recommendation is to stat with Windows7.

Haven't test it completely but so far, and for basic jobs..it's awesome!! Perfect if you don't have a high budget and you're a looking for a mid-basic laptop.

What I now can write as pros are:

Lightweight and thin

Awesome sound

Average webcam resolution....like 1.3 mpx if I'm not wrong but it works.

Soft keyboard

Turbo boost it's amazing! you'll have your laptop up in less than 4 secs. Even when having many apps open for more than a week and using it everyday.

Great processor so far. While having many normal apps working at the same time, the system haven't crashed.

Screen resolution amazing.

What's not so good by now:

No key Locks light, you have to depend on software warnings when caps are on/off. But this only affects when u're entering a password.

Mousepad. Even I think this is a common issue, it does get touched when you're writing and more if you're concentrated. But you can always deactivate it (fn+7).

All usb ports are on the left side. So, beware if you're planning to buy or if you have a short wired mouse. Everything goes to the left.

This is not a cons for me but if you do a lot of presentations using a projector by vga, be sure to take the adapter with you all the time (cable with vga and rj-45 ports is included).

When closing the lid and not turning off the laptop, you have to deactivate the mouse pad; if not, it drives crazy and starts opening apps and clicking anywhere it can. (UPDATED 21/08/2013).

Read on many reviews that this laptop has issues with it's wifi card, which I haven't had yet.

For the ones that are afraid or had trouble with windows 8.. easy, downgrade to windows 7 or use any linux distribution, so you won't get lost.

I run a virtual table top role playing game programmed in Java, and my old machine wasn't cutting it since I have to host players. I've used acer in the past and decided to pick this one up.

I do some very basic graphic work on maps for the game and it handles GIMP very well. Over all it's a powerful machine and it does the job I need it to do, it doesn't come with Office but I'm a Google drive guy so that didn't matter too much. It's got a pretty decent screen, which is nice for movies and videos via the web. The Win 8 interface is a bit clunky without the touch screen, so I would recommend if it's in your budget get the touch screen version, or a second monitor if you are going to be in a semi-fixed location for a while.

I rarely use if off power so I really can't speak about the battery life.

The two issues I have are minor and are likely me just nitpicking, the first is that the power jack is on the left hand side of the unit and I always end up with the cord over my lap or under my feet, it just feels like it should be on the right side and it's also a little tough to get the power adapter into the machine. The second is screen is a bit thin when compared to some other laptops so just be careful about how you hold it.

Overall it's a nice mid-level machine.

This computer is very nice. The computer is very sleek looking and is light. The battery life is around 8 to 10 hours. the build quality is excellent. The wide keyboard is very easy and nice to use. The computer is very fast lots of memory processor will get most anything done. The only reason not to get this laptop is if you are going to be playing high performance games. This computer does not have the graphics card for that task. There are similar models that have better graphic cards but are more expensive and you don't really need it unless you want to play games. This computer has everything needed and more for the average laptop user.

I am 36 and purchased this laptop for school. My main points of purchase were long battery, life, and portable. I am not a gamer or anything involving photo or video editing/photoshop type stuff so I cannot comment on those areas. I am an online student who does online research, classes and use microsoft office. I am very pleased with the performance of this laptop. I feel like I did not have to compromise on any of the things I was looking for. It is so light and thin and the battery life is just amazing, I never would have thought that a full size laptop would be able to achieve this, (@6-9)hrs depending on what you are doing. I also did not have to give up having an optical drive and the numeric keypad is extremely useful, especially for school work (math/statistics). I love, love, love it!!

Very well built machine. Impressed with matte soft plastic around keyboard. Keyboard itself is little odd because of numerical part, but this is a matter of habit.

Didn't try a HDMI output, but 720p mkv runs well on it. You need to uninstall most of the preloaded third-party(non-ASUS) crap to run it even better. Preloaded games from Oberon was the only third-party software, which I left. I addicted to one of them. A switch to better Microsoft Essential Security from the preloaded Trend Micro, disabling most of add-ons in the IE8 improved performance.

Sound quality is acceptable.

The quality of camera can be compared to the quality of my camcoder attached to older toshiba laptop. Which is also good.

Packaging.

Some envelopes of the enclosed DVD disks were ripped, looks like someone opened them up with shaken hands, but the box was sealed once and appeared never opened. I prefer to blink on that, considering the price after rebate.

Overall, good laptop to edit docs, surf Internet and watch videos.

Have had this laptop for almost a year now.

Pros:

The battery life is truly amazing. I (still, 1 year later) get about 8 hours battery life with heavy internet/application/video use in battery saving mode. Long battery life is the #1 reason I purchased the laptop, and on this account have not been disappointed. I use this laptop nearly every day, almost all day (college student).

Cons:

The laptop build quality feels cheap. One of the hinges has become loose and the plastic needs to be snapped back in to place every now and again.

There is no Windows install CD included, so you're stuck with the bloatware version of the OS that comes with the laptop. I called ASUS and they refuse to supply a Windows install CD. There is _a lot_ of useless bloatware included.

Overall, am very happy with the laptop. The build quality and bloatware is annoying, but hasn't taken away from the laptop's utility. Would recommend it to college students/those who work in cafes who cannot always get access to a power source.

I bought this explicitly for using as a budget HTPC. I didn't need Blu-Ray or long battery life because I intended to park it on my components and plug it into my big screen via HDMI. I did need a computer with good graphics and a pc that was powerful enough to run flash and HD video without hiccuping. Picked this up yesterday and by the time I had the OS decrappified of all of the junk software they add to these budget computers I was up and running and connected to my entertainment center and watching youtube on the big screen in no time.

I'll leave some updates later but here are a few important things to keep in mind.

1. There is a little button above the touchpad that turns it on and off. Make sure it's on before you freak out.

2. You have to touch the wireless icon in order to turn on the wireless card. It glows red and changes color to blue when it's on and it's touch sensitive.

Both points aren't made clear in the manual.

This laptop was my daughters graduation gift..now 15 months later it's a desktop unless I pay HP over $300 dollars(original cost $550) to repair the LCD screen. Oh and to ease the pain of having to pay $300 for the repair for just $1 more they will throw in a year of free tech support..WOOHOOO!!!Very dissapointed in this purchase. The HP dv4-2045dx has an abundance of features that makes it a great value for its price. I upgraded from my older Windows Vista-based HP notebook and immediately noticed a more stable and faster operating environment with the dv4-2045dx, which comes with 4GB of RAM and a 7200-rpm hard drive. While shopping for my new notebook, I found most competing models in the same price range to have only 3GB of RAM and a 5400-rpm hard drive. Further, the HP dv4-2045dx comes with a dedicated memory card, as opposed to the shared video memory of many other models in this price range. The aesthetics of the notebook are very slick, as is typical of HP notebooks. This model has a sleek white finish, and I personally find the 14.1" screen to offer the perfect blend of portability (feels much noticeable lighter than 15" and 17" notebooks) and usability (keyboard not cramped like my 10" netbook). The keys have a nice tactile feel, although the touchpad of this model (like other HP notebooks I've owned) has more than optimal friction. The speakers are suitable for general purpose use, although if you like listening to iTunes, I'd get a set of external speakers. As is common these days, the notebook comes bundled with a lot of third-party software which I'd just assume strip from my computer.

To summarize my thoughts, this computer provides tremendous value and relatively strong computing power for its price range. There are a lot of little features (such as the 7200-rpm hard drive, e-SATA port, dedicated graphics memory, etc.) that aren't typically found on a notebook in this price range. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this model again.

Nice. So I bring my brand new laptop (I had'nt even web surfed with this computer yet just wrote on word) on the 15th day because the computer suddenly started to show the blue screen of death and then the computer stopped turning on. They ran in store test, diagnostics, etc... The GEEK Sqaud guy decided that it was my Hard Drive. He said the Hard Drive could cost anywhere from 200$ or more. Hearing this, after I just dropped money for this brand new computer was EXTREMELEY AGGARVATING. He said on top of the Hard Drive Cost, Best buy would charge 150$ to send it out, to DOUBLE CHECK that it was in fact the Hard Drive.

The manager at Best Buy wouldnt budge to refund or even exchange it... and all she could say was I'm Sorry.

I called HP, sat on the phone with a Help Desk agent (who I couldnt understand) for 3.5 hours of Troubleshooting. Once the agent realized that he couldnt fix the computer over the phone, he then accidently but conviently disconnected the phone call. Apparently the HP warranty is a year but it is THIS much work just to get the computer through the warranty process. When I called back, the new agent wanted me to go through the same troubleshooting steps. I was irrate.

Lets just say, I AM NEVER BUYING ANYTHING FROM HP OR BEST BUY EVER, EVER, AGAIN. Worst Service, horrible product.

The best way to describe this computer: junk.

Purchased from Best Buy in Dec 2009, and it just died this last weeked, May 6, 2011. The computer will constantly turn off and will only start up for about 1-2 seconds before shutting down again. Most forums indicated that this is either hard drive, motherboard (due to overheating), or fan needs cleaned. I ordered an external enclosure for the hard drive off Newegg so I can pull the data off no matter the outcome, but decided to see if I could clean the fan. In order to get to the fan on a HP Pavilion laptop, you have to dissasemble the ENTIRE computer. To do this, you really need a plastic "case cracker" tool, which you can find in a Zune Repair kit (google it). I ended up just using a butter knife. There are quite a few youtube videos that will walk you through the process. This youtube video was the most thorough:

I even took pictures as I went, but ended up with a few extra screws when done, and it didn't fit back together that well (keyboard). Either way, it didn't help and it wasn't the fan, even though the fan was dirt. I'm almost positive it's not the hard drive, since it would startup and I could use the computer off and on the last few days. I think the motherboard just died, which seems to be a common problem with this laptop.

I purchased this laptop Black Friday 2009, so I've owned it for just about a year now. I must say it's probably the most durable piece of equipment next to some of the older Lenovos. I work on computers for a living, so I see my fair share of models and manufacturers come back. Sony by far is the least that I see come in for manufacturer defects or any other issues. Obviously software based issues are a different story, and mostly user error anyway :P

I've dropped this thing a few times, once on my foot, once while open, spilled a full glass of cheerwine and captain morgan, and the thing didn't even flinch. The T4300 is a decent middle of the road processor, but it provides plenty of power along with the other laptop specs. I don't use the blu-ray as much since I have a PS3, but the HDMI out is perfect to stream college basketball games on a 46" TV from my home team that I don't get to see on regular cable.

I would say overall this is one of the more impressive Sony Vaios. I will definitely stick to Sony laptops in the future. I know there was a review on overheating, but honestly I haven't experienced this thing get hotter then body temperature, even after having it plugged in for a couple hours while playing COD black ops and downloading stuff at the same time. I understand the bad reviewer's frustration, but every model has that 1 bad apple!

I'm not sure what the guy with the heating issue is doing with his laptop. I push mine very hard and I don't have any heating issues. It may get a little warm at times, but no heating issues. I love the blu-ray and HDMI. It's like having my own home theater.

I've had this for a year and it's done everything I've asked it to. No complaints whatsoever. It looks clean and cut. No complaints here.

Sony is not only recalling a large amount of overheating laptops, but declining a large amount of overheating laptops due to their lack of customer service. I purchased this laptop on black friday and it recently overheated melting the laptop casing, keyboard, and touchpad. Sony declined it saying it I tampered with the device when I had Best Buy send it in for me they changed their story saying it was liquid damage. They said they needed $500 to fix the laptop and I refused to pay that because it was still under warranty. If Sony is going to default on their warranties like this they don't deserve to sell their products to individuals who can't afford to feed the greedy corporate hands of Sony. This laptop SERIES, the NW series is something I highly recommend you stay FAR away from. Sony is showing us that overheating is a common issue in their laptops and that they aren't prepared to let their shareholders down by actually fixing the products. I have had this laptop since 2009 as well, bought at Best Buy on black friday. It has survived Daytona Bike week, Myrtle Beach Bike week and Laconia Bike week 4 times. Been in backpacks traveling 80+mph with extreme vibration, all with no issues. I have never had an issue with it overheating, it does kick the fan on from time to time, but even when it was sitting on the bed, it still didnt have an issue. BluRay works great, speakers arent as bad as everyone says, I use headphones as well however, just due to ambient noise.

The Elitebook is HP's most powerful mobile computer platform. Our Firm picked two of these up for the office. Our law firm uses document presentation software that requires powerful processing and graphics capabilities, and this computer does the job. It handles the largest case set-ups with alacrity and a lack of long lag times. I do recommend that power users upgrade their Elitebook from 8 to 16GB of DRAM. This is cheap and easy to do and if you are manipulating large amounts of graphics data you will appreciate the enhancement.

The Elitebook comes with both a VGA and the new DisplayPort adaptor for those who want to use two monitors.. The computer comes with built-in WiFi (the latest specs, which will accommodate dual-channel networks) and Bluetooth. This is important to me as I use many Bluetooth accessories.

Another nice feature of this computer is the way it accommodates user preferences with respect to a Mouse. There is a superb mousepad built in, of course. But in addition to this, HP has included the IBM-style finger style mouse at the center of the keyboard. I got through law school using this type of mouse, and people like me who broke in on this type of mouse will really appreciate having this here as it is much easier to use (if you are used to it) than the mousepad. By the way, the keyboard is beautifully backlit for those who will need this feature.

The beautiful gunmetal color of this unit looks terrific. The 17.3" display is 1920 x 1080 and supports full HD which is nice if you are watching movies, as I occasionally do on the road or in the den.

This style of computer is essentially a portable desktop. Our office has standardized on this format for our computers rather than the tower-style desktop because this enables easy transport of the computer to court, a client's office, or the conference room.

This one does everything that our Firm's power users need for it to do. The death of the PC is a myth in my opinion. I love my Apple iPad, but for powerful business software you need a powerful computer and always will. This Elitebook does the job at an affordable price. Recommended. RJB.

I was replacing another Toshiba laptop that got wet with this one. My only complaint would be the buttons on the touch pad. There is not a positive feel to the click like on the old laptop.

The screen is crisp and clear. I like the addition of the HDMI port so I can output the video to my TV.

All in all I am very satisfied. I did not give it 5 stars simply because of the touchpad.
