I have a slightly different laptop than this one as mine is 2.40GHz i5 with 6GB of RAM but they are essentially the same. I've had my Dell N7010 for about a year now and use it to run AutoCAD LT v2010 as well as Canvas v11, several programs specific to electrical engineering, FTP, and all the usual MS Office items. I very much enjoyed how the N7010 does not come with a lot of bloatware programs littering the hard drive. There are no soft touch controls on the computer which I applaud since previous laptops I've owned seemed to have nothing but problems with those. My Windows Experience Index numbers are as follows:

Processor: 6.8

Memory: 6.8

Graphics: 4.55

Gaming Graphics: 5.2

Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

All in all, I'm very satisfied with the performance and features of this laptop. It is well built, nice keyboard, good connectivity, and has been quite reliable for me. My wish list is that it had a blueray optical disk, USB 3.0, and that the cooling fan was a little quieter.

Shipped directly from Dell. Excellent packaging. It was simple to unpack, assemble, start up for the first time with a few of my preferences factored in the first time. The computer comes with a Getting Started type of manual that's quite thorough for that purpose. There is no expanded user manual, but there is a repair manual available online. The machine is 64-bit operating system capable, but how well that works, depends upon implementation.

I this product with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, 6G figuring that would keep me up with technology. Wrong. It put me ahead of technology (more than it could deliver). The 64-bit version hickups badly at times, and is much slower than when its running with the 32-bit version, per tech support at Dell. I should hope Something works better than what I have now. The installed version has terrible synchronization with a multiple thread program, such that I about gave up using it.

But I can't simply install the 32-bit I have to get another disk (this is an OEM install). Dell says although they did not ship me a 32-bit version of the program, they offered several options, one of which I took. Dell also says the ultimate version of Windows is faster still, but I declined, for reasons of price.

Most controls are well placed. I'd have preferred a larger Enter key. This one is the width of 2 1/2 regular keys, but no taller than any other I would have preferred one a bit larger in all directions, so that I could tell by feel (I touch type rather than hunt/peck). Full size keys (no hand cramps), standard placement for most keys, nice touch. Nice size mouse pad there's an option to shut off sensitivity when using the keyboard usually effective. Sometimes the mouse will activate by accident. The ESC key will often release it.

Very clear display, good colors, no distortion. Quiet fan at rest and for ordinary use such as a word processor. Heavier use will rev the fan up, but the "noise" level is mild enough to allow normal conversation.

If you are a heavy, 3D animated graphics user, consider the graphical observations below.

The laptop has a port for an analog monitor. It also has an HDMI port for direct, external display. This computer has a simple method to switch displays between a TV/amplifier/receiver/projector, computer, or both. For full HDMI resolution you need to switch to projection (eg TV) only. The 17" maximum screen resolution is 1600 x 900 and restricts the size when simultaneously sending a signal to its screen and the TV.

The computer has 4-2.0 USB ports spaced far enough from each other as to not interfere with physical shapes of the USB jack. One of those ports is about 1/4" from the Ethernet cable, which in my case has been needed only twice (worked flawlessly). Dell doesn't believe the technology is "there" as of this writing to employ add-on 3.0 USB.

For my usage the computer is comfortable to use on my lap without an extra pad, leaving some room between my knees for mild heat exhaust.

Like a few other manufacturers, Dell allows the function keys to be used for multiple roles. During boot up the keys operate normally, but when the operating system is control, the default for the keys to operate pre-defined Dell Functions such as volume or screen being stronger or weaker, sound muted, menu for different display options, toggle network adapters, etc. To use the same keys as Operating System function keys, one must hold down a "Fn" button (placed between the Left-Control and Windows (flag) keys). Dell made the right choice for me -I use their functions far more often than of the OS. Weakness the function key numbering is a hue of blue that blends easily against the brown keys. In dim light it is very hard to determine what the key is except by counting, but the ESC key is the same size & shape as "F1" immediately to its left, so F5 is really the 6th key over.

The computer has a built in port for some camera memory cards works fine for my Panasonic but not for the Canon. But both cameras come with USB adapters, so not a big issue.

A reasonable power pack will run unplugged for 2 3 hours before warning you that it will need to shutdown or have power.

Good OS rarely have I had to reboot or logoff. My habit is to shut the lid using a setting that puts the computer to sleep after 15 minutes or so. It does not come with office products such as spread sheet, but I found a good free open source code office product on the internet.

The internal wireless adapter works well with my 802.11n router, but I had a little trouble with getting the initial handshake. After that, no problem. I've chucked my older 11n USB adapter in its favor.

I considered switching to 32-bit based on Dell's comment that it was a better product, but later decided my problem wasn't the instruction bit size, but total available resources. See "Comment" section for a Q&A.

I've had my Dell N7010 for 3 and a half years now, and it's still my daily computer. I mostly use MS Office and Gmail, and some graphical editing programs and Calibre eBook management, so it's not stressed like what the gamers would do. The screen is easy on the eyes, keyboard is simple and easy and has a comfortable feel. Various I/O have been used for USB devices (mini & micro USB) and Apple iTunes have all been trouble-free. I've traveled with it about 100 times, used it day or night for work and play and it's always been just great. There are fancier lap tops that are sleek and thin, but I'd much rather have a dependable workhorse that I can trust. I'm on this thing almost every day and would not hesitate to recommend it to ANYONE who needs a dependable laptop.

I like the size of the laptop. It is in very good condition. I loaded up a couple of programs I use a lot with no problem. There is a significant problem with the keyboard it is either incredibly over-sensitive , or something is wrong with it. I was trying to write a report and the cursor jumped around so much it was impossible to continue. I generally use the computer for web-browsing and watching TV so I have not explored this further yet, although I know there is a way to adjust the sensitivity of the key-pad.

I like most things about this computer. It's much better than my old PC (a Gateway NV53-something). It handles all of my tasks and games flawlessly (keep in mind I got this machine two days ago). I like the layout of the keyboard and the feel of they keys, but the problem I've really had was with the touchpad. Sometimes when I'm scrolling or dragging the pointer across the screen, it'll randomly select a block of text. This isn't really a huge issue I guess, since I've disabled it while typing, but still one that needs to be addressed. The position of the USB ports on the right side near the front of the computer is also annoying since I use a mouse and am right handed. There is also a port on the left side, but I'd rather make use of the USB 3.0 port (left) for things like data transfer than a mouse.

I bought this directly from Dell about a month ago. The performance and battery life seem fine, but I had a recurring issue where the laptop would hang at start-up. I would force a shutdown and most times it would restart properly after the recovery steps, but sometimes it took more than once.

Checking the web I found some folks thought it was the video driver which I downloaded from the Dell site, but I also found the current BIOS level was A03 and my unit was only A01. So I upgraded that too and have had zero problems with start-up. Good news for folks who are comfortable going to the website and downloading software upgrades, not so good if you expect Dell support.

Another issue on the horizon is the battery which is now inside the laptop. Here is a youtube instructional video on how to do it . Not a big deal if you are comfortable opening the laptop up, big deal if you are going to have to go to someone down the line (probably 3-4 years). Not sure other ultrabooks are any better, but I wish it was simpler. There are settings to extend the life of the battery under the power settings controls and I suggest you use them.

Otherwise, as I noted at the top, laptop works well. My first time with a touch screen and it works well too.

This has been a great laptop. 2 years later I installed 32gb of RAM in it (though the specs list 16gb max)

I will probably hold on to this for another 2-3 years. I'm in the process of using the ultrabay to add another HD.

I use this machine to do scientific computing. It does it well.

The only downside is battery life. I never have my battery installed unless I'm travelling.

For daily use the battery is out, and the laptop is plugged in to the wall. I bought another charger so I have one at home and one at the office (the charger is bulky/heavy)

The quality of this laptop far surpasses its price. In addition to having great specs, this laptop is also really well-built. The fans are silent and efficient. The laptop barely gets warm even under during gaming. The laptop chassis is solid and compact. Th brushed aluminum cover is elegant and does not suffer from fingerprint build-up.

Unlike the earlier version which I returned (n53sv-xe1), EH71 does not have its predecessor's disappointing keyboard flexes. The screen is vivid and bright, but the viewing angle can be a bit better. My only complaint at the moment is the huge, easily scratched plastic screen bezel. I decided not to go with the high resolution model because the text gets a bit too small.

Also, I was amazed at the battery life of this laptop. Using power-saving mode, this laptop lasted 5-6 hours.

It's unfortunate that they moved the price up to $940. It was $690 when I ordered it and was an awesome deal at that price. I didn't look at too many laptops in the $900 range, but it's probably still a reasonably good deal at that price.

The system runs current games smoothly on "high" settings, and games over a year old run smoothly on the highest settings. So this won't cut it for a die-hard gamer, but it's great for casual gaming.

I quickly upgraded the ram to the 16GB max with 2 of these Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 Memory Module (CT2KIT51264BC1339) (totaling 4 sticks of 4GB). Swapping out the ram took all of 2 minutes. I work from home online and often have several programs running and over 100 tabs open in my web browser. So having enough memory to run smoothly for hours with a heavy load without having to reboot is awesome.

First of all, it took me a few weeks just to decide I wanted the 13" Retina MacBook Pro or this one, in the end, I went with this one. Here's why:

1) It's $150 cheaper!

2) It has twice the storage, 128GB vs256GB.

3) Same amount of ram

4) Much lighter/thinner

For me, those are all fairly important, plus, I just love Mac OS X, and would never even think of using anything else. The performance difference between the maxed out MacBook Air, and the 13" retina isn't that much, and the screen isn't worth the extra cost plus decreased storage. All in all, i love this little gem of a laptop, and it's much, much better then my old late 2007 white MacBook! (Though, that still works great for the basics.)

I have had a personal computer since my first Apple II+ back in 1981. I worked my way up through several macs, starting with a whopping 128K Ram version. I left Apple in the early 1990s because of 3 factors: 1)The OS: Too many times the "solution" for program conflicts was a "clean restart". Meaning essentially start over with a re-formatted hard drive. 2)Apple stuff was only sold in Apple stores and was way more expensive than PC stuff. 3)Windows had progressed to the point it was almost as friendly as the mac.

I am very happy I switched back. It was time for a new computer to replace my 3 year old Toshiba PC. I read a book on Windows 8 and decided it is not for me. I do real work (email, personal accounting, Internet, word processing).....very little in the way of media. I have a tablet I use for emphasizing that kind of stuff and did not want/need my main computer to look like my tablet. The book explained how I could supposedly make windows 8 look like I wanted but it was so full of workarounds I decided on the Mac.

I bought the 256GB Air upgraded to 8 GB Ram and a Core i7 processor. i also purchased an external optical drive.....$70 on Amazon.

I had compared the Mac Pro and its Retina display in Best Buy. The kicker over to the Air was that I couldn't in any way justify/use the Retina display for my purposes, and I didn't need more than a 13" screen. When at my desktop I use an external monitor.

What I like:

Size and weight of course....It fits in my briefcase very well alongside my 10" tablet.

Fast.....it reboots in way under a minute. My old Win 7 machine sent me for at least one more cup of coffee. In fact the Solid State Storage drive is most likely the responsible reason for the speed so I cannot even be sure of the speed contribution from the extra Ram and processor.

The plus of the SSSD is that because you aren't spinning a disk you get better battery life (I haven't experiment with that, so no data) and also you don't have to worry about mechanical damage to the disk....vibration, etc.

Clean User Interface. Somehow Apple makes it seem cleaner and there is no missing functionality as far as my use is concerned. Accessing more obscure functions/options can sometimes be a little challenging but they are all there eventually. Most of these kinds of things are one-time settings.

Apple made the migration from Windows 7 pretty easy. I used an Ethernet cable with a Apple Thunderbolt adapter as hardware, Apple's free Migration Assistant as software. I initially tried the usb cable/software from StarTech but I could not make that work. Thanks Amazon for the easy return.

Be aware: Migration Assistant creates another user on your mac. I have made that user my main login and eventually will delete the original user the initial setup created.

Built in Bluetooth. I had it on my Toshiba but even Toshiba couldn't help me get it working, so I was tied into a dongle. The Mac's bluetooth works. I bought a bluetooth mouse and goodbye dongle.

Apple Support is totally 5 star. In the 2 or 3 times I have needed to get live help it has been less than 2 minutes to talk with someone live. Someone whose English is unaccented. Do not be daunted by their call-you-back system. The callbacks have been within a minute or two.

Apple UI writing makes you smile, I swear. For instance, instead of a "Send Mail" button it has a paper airplane icon. When the mail goes out it makes a swishing sound. Ok, stupid but it still gets my smile out. For another instance, when a download comes in the screen shows a ball-like icon flashing across the screen and going into the "download stack" in the "Dock"...the line across the bottom of the screen with app links, etc.

I haven't done anything with any other stacks but I think the idea is you can group files or apps into a stack without cluttering the dock. So a stack would be the equivalent of a folder on your Dock. "Home stuff" "Work Stuff: etc.

What I don't like:

Some things don't change. Apple has to have its proprietary connections (power, display, thunderbolt) of course. Expensive of course.

An inserted SD card sticks out from the Air case maybe half way. I wouldn't advise transporting an Air with an sd card inserted.

And of course the price. But since none of the don't likes were news to me I can't take a star away.

It's not really Apple's fault but the version of Quicken for mac is really crippled. Do your research first to see if it will do what you want. yes, you can always load up a Windows partition and run the real quicken but I am trying to avoid that

Got this for my wife for her consulting. She likes it a lot because of the light weight, quick resume from sleep, good battery life, and attractive design. The only downside of the MacBook Air is that it costs a lot more than an equivalent PC laptop, but they are gorgeous machines.

I bought this computer about 2 years ago. It suited my needs and I'm quite a Dell fan. I have the full HD version with a 500GB 7200RMP disk.

The screen is bright (not perfectly even, but that is barely noticable) and crisp. The keyboard is a joy to type on (I don't like the chicklet keyboards you find on many notebooks today). I know, the keyboard catches dust and dirt, but if you're careful it is possible to remove a key to remove the dirt particle and refit it without breaking anything. When not under high load, the laptop is very quiet. When stressed, you hear the fan quite loud.

Today I'm considering to add some more memory (2x4GB instead of the 2x2GB I have now) and replacing the hard disk with an SSD.

I had to have the inverter of the screen repaired by DELL (luckily within the warranty period). One of the hinges has a crack in the plastic hull, the inner part is not broken though. Given the fact that I use the laptop every day for about 10hrs, dragging it from my desk to multiple meetings a day, I cannot but reconfirm my trust in the build quality of Dell.

my wife and i bought this after our last hp took a crap... it lasted 6 years and im so glad to get rid of vista! windows 8 is good but takes a while to get used to but i like it except it seems to take forever for the computer to load initially to setup.... after you get everything set up its pretty awesome the processor is great, fast and love it ... i bought it from hp on black friday and saved a bunch, plus i had the options to upgrade the screen resolution and cache with graphics card. got a great deal from hp.com .... i mean we saved hundreds! way cheaper on amazon and is really a great computer... we dont game or anything crazy only had it a day and we looooove it.... i recommend opting for the bigger battery i didnt upgrade the screen and i still love it!!! i was gonna go with toshiba but really glad my wife talked me into this one.... i mean toshiba website couldnt even get me this good of a deal on the same specs for a laptop.now onto the speakers...i have a rezound and the speakers on the phone itself isnt all that awesome but the headphones they come with are great, and i was thinking the same thing with this laptop.... turned on youtube to a mustang video... i was blown away with how deep and rich the speakers sounded... i meani am VERRRY impressed with the quality and depth if these speakers...not to mention the double touch scrolling.. brilliant... For three years now I have been PC free relying on my trusty MacBook Pro for all the heavy lifting. The replacement of my 2.16GHz MBP was long coming. The major problem was that essentially unlike a PC laptop which is functionally useless after two years, Macs can last forever. What doesn't last forever however is AppleCare Protection Plan For Portable Apple Computers 15 Inches and Above. Even though Macs are extremely reliable, Applecare is a necessary option. All computers, even Apple computers, are mechanical devices and subject to random and expensive repairs.

So hear was my dilemma. I had a perfectly functional three year old MacBook Pro. It had a market value, and I had a buyer. In a month when my Applecare warranty expired repairs were going to be expensive, eating up the value of the computer. Plus the Congress created a 100% business write-off for new computers for 2009, meaning that the government was going to subsidize a new MacBook Pro. So I sold my old laptop and bought this incredibly fast new 17 inch MacBook Pro.

First why 17in? Lots of people prefer 15 inch machines because of weight issues. This 17 inchat a about 6.6 pounds is significantly lighter than my old MBP. A larger screen is more effective for work, particularly when my work requires research and writing. The only option I got is the antiglare screen. It is true that the colors have more pop and sizzle with the shiny standard screen, but I am not a graphic artist. I read and write in black and white and a glare slows me down.

Battery life is another big factor. An 8 hour battery means you can work on transcontinental or even trans-Atlantic flights. Airline power connections are still few and far between in economy.

The 500GB hard drive is far more than I need right now. One option, although an expensive one, is a 256GB solid state drive. There are advantages. Unlike Hard Drives there are no whirling mechanical parts, making it more releiable. But that does not mean a solid state drive canot fail. They can and you will still require Applecare. the best insurance, along with Applecare is a Apple Time Capsule MB765LL/A 1TB which I used to "move" the data,music, photos, videos, applications, and keychain from the older laptop to my new MBP. (Hint: to do this wirelessly takes a while. Figure on seven or eight hours)

So now I have a flashier, larger, lighter version of my old MacBook Pro, soon to be in the loving hands of a new owner. I have no doubt he will be able to use it for several more years. My new MacBook Pro will be with me till the Applecare expires in three years.

I am very unsatified with this laptop.It still has a old video card in it you cant play screensavers or games also you cant play DVD movies because the software is incompatible. This was a Christmas gift for my wife now im going to have to send it back or spend more money just so she can use it.Why would someone sell something that some cant use when thay get it!!!

From what I can find out this was a laptop designed by Asus for Best Buy. It is hard to find it on Asus website although they do have the drivers available. I checked it out at Best Buy where I had gone to look at another brand. The feel of the keyboard and the monitor clarity won me over. I bought this to replace a dying laptop and it was my first experience with Windows 8 (I did try the beta but wasn't impressed). I didn't want a touch screen but I did want the memory and hard drive size. I was a bit concerned about the lack of an SSD drive but I haven't seen any speed issues that would make me sorry that feature wasn't included.

Pros: It is fast to start up, VERY fast. I have several Windows 7 computers (laptops, desktops, tablet.) It smokes them for speed when it comes to loading the operating system. It will also go to sleep and come out of it instantly with no hang ups. Response to loading programs, closing them etc. is exceptional. Battery life seems to be running over 5 hours which is what I expected.

Cons: A very few minor issues that I can live with but might not work well for someone else: Lighted keyboard I want a lit keyboard and it has one but it is very hard to make out the letters when they are lit so I ended up turning that feature off.

Touch pad Sometimes it can be unresponsive. It almost acts like it isn't getting a firm enough touch or drag from my finger. I put a wireless mouse on it and that works great. It can be frustrating trying to get the pad to respond. Since I have had several touch pads on laptops in the past I feel qualified to say it is not it's best feature.

Overall I love the laptop and would purchase an Asus again.

I got one from a Best Buy online sale for a very reasonable price. It is fast, light, sleek, and beautiful. I love this laptop.

Pros:

Performance: With the 3rd Generation Core i7 processor and 8 GB RAM this computer is a real performer. It is fast, quiet, and ice-cool!

Weight: At 4.2 lbs this computer is not the lightest but it is quite portable. With this configuration, if you are expecting some real performance then please don't go for the ultra-portables. They are just joke! This computer is no joke. It's meant for serious computation.

Screen: The screen is extremely bright and vivid in colors. The matte screen ensures that you get to see the video, and not your own face. I hate those glossy screens because of self reflection. But this one with its matte screen simply is great!

Keyboard: Backlit, chicklet keyboard. What I like about this keyboard is that the keys are very large and well spaced. The best thing I liked about the keyboard is that it has separate Home and End buttons. One important factor is the up/down scroll buttons. They are separate and nicely spaced unlike some other laptops in which these are so tiny that you end up pressing one in stead of the other!

Some people have complained about the silver color keys which absorb the back-lit effect. It is true to some extent. However, if you are typing in the well-lit environment, turning off the back-lit makes this better. And if you are in a low light condition, then the back-lit does help!

Speaker: Very loud and clear sound.

It has DVD drive. So unlike other lightweight laptops, you are not handicapped with this one.

Overall, it's a power packed compact laptop. I recommend it for anyone.

I am an apple person but I wanted to buy a decent laptop as an alternative at home since some of my work software only works with windows and I have to say this laptop is great for the price I paid. The screen is great, performance is great and the hardware seems ok. Obviously it's not a macbook and all but it also cost me a fourth of a macbook and the casing it black metal so I am pretty happy with it.

Similar to comment from NJinKneer, my newly purchased in April 2013 Q400A crashes at random. Just dies in a heart beat. Do not buy this computer.

Great product, except no support to run windows 7. Drivers supported by manufacturer only for windows 7. Everything else is great, especially the design of the exterior.
