I recently acquired this laptop at an astounding price at a used computer store. Well once I got it home and turned it on it had not been cleaned out(hard drive) in all whoever had this laptop didn't care for it as well as they should have but I wasn't complaining due to the price I paid for this laptop! A little tender loving care which involved a good cleaning(that's my regular) a memory upgrade from 1gb to 2gb and then a call to sony customer care and they were excellent with helping me get it restored to factory conditions! He helped me every step of the way without once asking for receipt or warranty info! He didn't even ask for money at all! They were great! From now on I will only be buying sony computers from here on out! Haven't had a single problem with this laptop! Now Its basically like a brand new computer! Love it!

Ive had mine for a year and a half now and the only thing ive had problems with is the battery holding its charge. ive put 2gb of ram in and upgraded to windows 7 and it runs it so smooth. i use it for school everyday and i put microsoft enterprise on it and i love it. this is one of the best investments ive ever made!

I was trying to buy a laptop to my sun. I ended up in the store and I bought this Toshiba without knowing anything. I was inclined to buy a HP laptop, but the difference of 40 bucks, I ended buy the toshiba. I got a 17.6"screen, instead of a 15'', a quad core 1.5MHz, instead of a pentium dual core, 6 GB of RAM, instead of 4GB, a 6 cell battery,instead of a 4 cell battery.

After opening the box, it was very nice, big screen, sturdy PC.

Keyboard with keypad for numbers, flat, with a space between the keys.

It has a HDMI out put and 2 3.0 USB, plus the usual stuff.

When I switched on, it reminded my iMac. I had to fill it up name, address, network, and after a while, I was facing the Windows 8 for the first time. It was not very friendly, but the whole thing is a front screen. If you get the desktop version and do the right click button, you will get familiar with the OS.

What was nice it the possibility to uninstall the bunch of things that come with, very easy.

then it was the moment to install the wi-fi printer. As you may know, printer are not made to print, but this time, it was installed before I noticed.

I deleted the Internet Explorer web browser, and installed Google Chrome. easy, great!

So far, it was a good experience, hope it will not freeze.

The only cons so far is the touch screen, that it does not have, but I did not buy with it, and honestly...we are the generation where touching the screen was a sin.

Purchased the Toshiba L75D-A7283 in August 2013 from Staples for $299 plus tax, free shipping. That price is Chromebook territory for a full Windows 8 laptop featuring a 17-inch screen, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB hard drive, and a 6-cell removable battery. For the price, this seems like a tremendous value, with a quad-core AMD A4-5000 (aka Kabini) to boot. I have an older Toshiba laptop that is 4 1/2 years old and running great, so the Toshiba name on this model is a plus for me. Probably a large part of the value equation is the relatively low cost of the AMD processor, which allowed Toshiba to squeeze in the fantastic specs. Speaking of which, when it comes to benchmarking performance, the AMD Kabini scored just 810 for Passmark, 2060 for CPU Mark, and 325 for 3D Graphics Mark. You'll have to do some research on how that measures up to your requirements, but in a nutshell, the CPU speed lies between Intel's Bay Trail and faster Celeron processors, with much better 3D performance than either of them. Compared to other AMD processors, the A4-5000 bests most E and E1 series chips and comparable to the newer E2 series, but the CPU I think tops out at 15 watts with no turbo mode, which is unfortunate but probably helps overall power consumption. In real-world usage, most programs and apps I use start up relatively fast, although I don't use power-hungry programs like Photoshop. Games like Asphalt 7 takes about 15 seconds to load to the start screen, for example, which is not blazing fast, but not terrible either. Basic 3D games like Asphalt 7 and Reckless Racing run smoothly, I'm sure more demanding games will not.

Trackpad performance is as good as it gets for Windows 8, meaning overall not that good, but much better than a budget Lenovo I had, which constantly shifted the mouse location every time my lower thumb brushed against the top corners of the trackpad. This laptop thankfully does not do that. I did disable most Windows 8 gestures though, since they seemed to interfere with basic trackpad movement, but word is that the upcoming Windows 8.1 upgrade will improve trackpad functionality. Trackpad buttons were below average, they are flush with the track pad and require relatively much effort for the button-press to register, it would have been much nicer if the buttons were raised buttons instead of flush. Keyboard spacing is very good which is expected in a 17-inch frame, with a dedicated number pad and an array of dedicated functional buttons such as volume up and down, volume mute, wifi on/off, screen brightness, etc. These dedicated buttons are much appreciated. Speaker sound is above average for a budget laptop with DTS sound, but don't expect too much here.

Official battery life is 5 1/2 hours, I would say that is realistic with screen brightness at 45%, wifi-on, continuous web browsing and other light-to-medium weight programs like a Word processor running. I would expect 2-3 hours with 3D gaming and between 3-4 hours with continuous video, depending on volume output. Screen resolution is 1600 x 900, which is 720P HD resolution, so not super nor terrible. Overall build quality is very good considering it is mostly all plastic, with such a large chassis you can induce creaking and flex, again not super but not terrible in any way. While browsing the internet or watching video, the chassis manages to stay relatively cool, you can hear the fan but it's not loud at all. Skype performance with its built-in microphone was very good. For those who are having a hard time with Windows 8 coming from an earlier Windows, just download Classic Start Menu, it'll bring back the start menu and program files, and also lets you boot directly into desktop mode. Windows 8 also seems to load faster than Windows 7, maintains a lower overhead (disk spins less... although that could be the generous 6GB of RAM), and seems just as stable as Windows 7.

Overall, there's not one particular thing from this Toshiba L75D that stands out, but taken the sum of parts, for the price, it adds up to what I feel is a tremendous value. I almost feel sorry for anyone spending anywhere near $300 for a Chromebook.

Bought this laptop to replace my desktop. Wanted the larger screen, and I am very pleased with it. In fact, I have added an external monitor so I can have 2 workspaces on the same laptop.

It came with no manual and Windows 8. After trying hard for several days, I realized that my expectations were correct Windows 8 is not for me. As a computer professional (30 years in the industry), I am very skilled with software but not W8. It is very unfriendly to the user.

So I loaded Windows 7 on the system and have been extremely pleased with it. Aside from some software drivers, the move was painless. The driver downloads from Toshiba are only for W8, so I had to search. Found the perfect driver collection on ... the Lenovo support site, of all places (file name hsd607ww).

Would definitely buy another!

This is my 3rd Toshiba Satelite (never paid more than $450) and they last about 4-5 years of daily use before keys wear and system performance gets sluggish, but a real workhorse laptop for nearly the bottom of the barrel pricing. The Quad-core processor and 6G RAM was worth the extra $60 dollars over the lowest base model. It zips along pretty good and is supposedly a game rated laptop although I'm not a gamer. The only complaint I have is the touchpad has a few too many bells and whistles I have yet to figure out be careful where you let your fingers wander! I use an external mouse so that's not big a deal most of the time. Also still trying to figure out Win 8 but that's not Toshiba's fault. I just hit the App key and click on the Desktop tile to get back to the land of familiarity.

Got the Lenovo mostly because it was time to change laptops. Lenovo has some interesting software like the energy management that always keep the battery below 50% making the life of the cells go the extra mile and last longer, after all , what kills the battery sooner (Like the HP batteries that last like 8 months before they die completely) is having them charged at 100% with continous charge.

When I purchase the laptop I was hoping against all hope that it would run Diablo 3. When I asked around when the Beta came out nearly everyone said "Meh, it is an integrated graphic card, you won't be able to run it" or the "Maybe in the lowest spec you might run it with unplayable FPS" I took the risk anyhow and bought the game and I just turn off the shadows in game and everything else I left it in HIGH resolution and it runs smooth, just a milisecond hickup from time to time when the game gets too crowded of finds.

So yeah, the laptop, for thye price and what it offers, it way too good to be true!

Cons: Keyboard kinda cramped. Super small shift key is annoying. The computer shows smudges very easily. Screen sucks not made for watching blue ray. Only one stick of ram it should have two really.

Pros: Super fast i5 sandy bridge processor. Price is very low for the hardware you are getting. Even thought it is plastic it is very well built and doesn't feel cheap. Stays cool... I even overclocked it :3... BUT I AM A RISK TAKER YOU MAY NOT WANT TO DO THAT! :)

I put a 2gig stick I had laying around in it to bump it up to 6gigs of ram. Swapped out the slow HHD and put in a SSD I had laying around. Boot time is under 7 seconds now. If you add more ram and put in a SSD this is a super fast laptop. It beats my MacBook Pro (With HHD) in boot time and compile/run time for programs I have written in c++ and java. (Both with up to date Eclipse IDE). I am really happy with it.. Also no problems with throwing linux on it (Dual booting with Ubuntu and BackTrack).

If you are going to buy this for just watching movies, writing papers, surfing the webbernets and sending emails it is fine out of the box. If you are going to use it as your main computer I suggest you get another ram stick (They are really cheap)and if you have another 80-100$ buy an SSD instillation is super easy even for newbies.

I replaced a 5-year old Toshiba running Vista with the Lenovo. I chose Lenovo primarily because of the ratings on Amazon and Consumer Reports. It was an easy set up and the Lenovo is very fast. The reason I gave it 4-stars instead of 5, is because the keyboard includes a number key pad to the right and it makes the keyboard rather compact and difficult to find the delete/page up/page down keys, without looking at the keyboard. If you do a lot of number entries, it would be handy to have the separate number pad. I have only had the laptop for a month, so cannot rate it on reliability at this time.

Update 7/10/2012: The Lenovo continues to run well, no issues with performance. I changed the rating to 3-stars. After using the keyboard more I have found I keep hitting the arrow up key when trying to hit the right shift key, so the cursor moves up. I really don't need the number pad, so if I had it to do again, I would not choose this model.

The laptop performed great, then by month 7, the screw on the left corner beneath the left hinge and fan fell out at some point, and the left hinge is binding, and opens up the laptop and now is off centered. Lenovo support advised sending in the laptop and for me (even though its under warranty) to pay for shipping and repairs for a total of $247! Will not get another Lenovo due to this poor design flaw.

This model is the worst. There is an inherent flaw in the design that cannot process static properly (forgive me as I don't know exactly what happens), so without warning the screen will turn fuzzy, like a TV channel with no reception. I have been working with Dell for almost 2 months to correct this problem. They "fixed" my initial computer twice and it still is doing it. Then they sent me a replacement unit which also does it. I am now awaiting a new unit model replacement. There is a forum on Dell's website where there are HUNDREDS of units doing this. Please, please, please do not buy this model!

runs COLD, even after 5+ hours

Summary: for $1,200 it is the best all-around ultraportable road warrior with the most power and longest battery at the same time.

PS: make sure you check your warranty status because J&R apparently screwing around with your dates, mine came with a June 2010 warranty start date, that's a 2-months loss right there... just contact Lenovo and fax them your actual invoice, they will fix it (takes some time.)

Warning: if you want to upgrade your warranty to ThinkPad Protection (accidental damage etc) you MUST add in the first 30 days!

Review of Dell XPS X15L-3357SLV 15-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)

NOTE: Windows 8 works fine on this laptop. To install, best to create a Win 8 bootable flash drive. Boot from that, and after formatting (be sure to backup data first, if desired), it only takes 9 minutes to go from "Next" to "Personalize" (new install booting for the first time). Yes, only 9 minutes!

How did I even find this computer on Amazon? Navigated to Laptop department, then entered these two words into search box:

Then, because I wanted a great value, limited the results to items from Amazon's warehouse deals. Of the 40 or so laptops that came up, this seemed like the best deal.

As my search words suggest, it has a 7200 hard drive and an hdmi port. For me, both of those features are critical. Considering its impressive specs, which include quad-core and usb 3.0, this laptop is very enticing. Price for a new one is currently $1070, but I snagged a "like new" for a mere $700. The only obvious difference between my laptop and new, is that mine shipped in a generic box.

The only negative so far, and it's minor, is that the power adapter is big.

It's infrequent that I desire to use a computer outside my house, but I want that option. But I don't want portability to diminish my computing power while at home, so this laptop is ideal. It's heavier and bulkier than what's preferred for transport, so if portability is your primary reason for a laptop, then don't get this. But if you want a fast space-saving computer, that you can take outside if needed, this model will please you.

6 lb 3 oz, according to scale at my local post office.

When I received this computer, its original product key sticker had been crossed out with a black X, and a second "Refurbished" product key sticker added. I don't see the point of that, considering that I cleared the X using adhesive remover, so now I have an extra Win 7 activation code! Golly!

This computer looks as great as it operates. There are some hiccups but I put all my computers thru the test! I use them on a high processing level for sound and in studio and live performance. I've tried other computers and nothing still performs like a DELL. HP claims that they have the best in audio and computers for music....don't buy that sales pitch. For the home user, it's great, but in the commercial world using windows, DELL is always the best in performance. I tried two different HP with Beats audio....junk! I needed a computer that could perform under very very very heavy audio AND Video processing requests.....at the same time. Like 4 hours of continuous processing the highest quality video and music AT ONCE. NO HP could match the performance of the dells integrated video processor and the i7 dedicated processor. I've always used DELL and have one that is 7 years old and still our performs other NEW Toshiba's, HP's, Lanovo's....anything. if you need to use windows, DELL is going to be the best built with windows to perform this kind of processing.

I purchased the Dell XPS X15L-3357SLV with Windows 7 right before the release of Windows 8 because I didn't want Windows 8. After receiving my machine, I spent a couple of hours on the phone with the Dell technichians just to get the machine operating, particularly on a wireless basis. I then had to purhcase a software assistance package from Dell because I could not get my homenetwork to work with the new compuer. This involved a call of at least three hours before they finally solved the problem. The next day I called back Dell again because the wireless network was extremely week. After another call of 2 to 3 hours, the technicial determined that there were at least 4 major things wrong with the new laptop. He said he could send a prepare person out within two days, but would also try to get permission to replace the machine since he had never seen so many things go wrong on a new machine. To shorten the story, within a couple of weeks I did get a new machine, a model SPS L521X, but it had Windows 8. The technician said if I didn't want Windows 8 they would send me the disks with Windows 7 to install.

Because of the problems I had previously, the tecnician worked with me on setting up the new laptop. The first day, he spent 2 hours with me. The second day, he spent another 2 hours getting my home network to work. After the call, I determined that I could not change files from one computer to another or create a new file on my laptop and save it to my desktop computer. After a three hour call on the third day, they solved my home network problem.

At this point, even though the conversion to Windows 8 is painful, I have decided I would be better off working with Windows 8 rather than running the risk of starting all over on my home network and trying to install Windows 7.

Now after all of this you are probably wondering how I could give this laptop a 4 star rating. Well once the computer got up and running, I think all aspects of it (i.e., operating speed, screen resolution, build quality) or excellent. I guess I may be too easy, but the discount of only 1 start for all my hours on the phone with the technicians is tempered by the fact that the Dell technicians stuck with me the whole time and followed up a couple times after solving the problem to make sure the computer was working.

This computer is everything I wanted. 8 gb RAM, 1gb dedicated video memory, it is fast, the speakers are great and I haven't had a single problem with it. The backlit keyboard is great too. This is my first time buying a Mac, so I opted for a used Macbook with some decent specs. I am so impressed by this laptop. I bought my MacBook refurbished and am very happy with it. While I wish it had a bigger hard drive (mine has 160 GB) and more RAM (mine has 4 GB; I can add 2 more GB) it does a good job with most laptop tasks.

As of this writing, it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. This is subject to change.

There are times the fan kicks on and the laptop becomes really hot.

I have a great laptop stand for my MacBook by roadtools and it helps keep the heat away from me.

One minor point: Heat does radiate out of the bottom left corner. Plus there is a slightly sharp ridge around the MacBook's edge. I find this ridge slightly irritating to the skin of my wrists.

I wish Apple still had the MacBook in its lineup as it is a nice bridge between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.

The screen is SOOOO dim I can not read text. I had a D 600 for 9 years. My unit was trashed by an exceptionally visous person. I KNOW what it should look like and my computer tech agrees with my accesment. The fact that I am visually impaired dose not limit use of all other computer. I bouught one in 1979 10 meg $27,000; one in 1982 $3,500; one in 1983 $5,000 (with printer); one in 2000 $2,300; one in 1998 $2,300 [dell 600]; 2001 $4,000 [really loaded]. I KNOW what a screen should look like. EVERY computer, some monochrome, I have owned is aproximately 10 times better than this defective unit!

I had reservations about a refurbed laptop but this one has surpassed my expectations. Being a workstation with 3.06ghz C2D and dedicated graphics, I feel it has the performance of at least an I3 if not an I5 system. The physical condition is beyond what should be expected from a 3+ yr old unit. I had to look very closely to find even small dings or scratches...I am very pleased.

this is my first laptop i've purchased, so i wasn't sure what to expect. but i really like the speed of this dell. it came with a bigger harddrive than was described. the only thing i would upgrade is the memory, and a mouse.

The Dell M4400 I received was packed secure and easy to install the Windows 7 by following instructions. The only problem with the machine is the Nvidia M770 Video Driver put it in the laptop in BSOD mode often. I could not find

a good fix or solution other than just disabling the Nvidia driver and using the Microsoft onboard driver. I installed 4GB of

Crucial DDR2 PC6400 800mhz ram which helps. It came with only one stick of 2GB, with lower Mhz memory. This

helped with the Windows 7 and laptops performance overall. It is a well built good machine, which is good for performing business functions and even comes with smartcard. It was worth the price.

I've been using Dell computers from Optiplexes with 486 processors onwards, and never had big nasty issues with them. OK, the mice on some of the older lattitudes somethimes would go funny but that's it. Those boxes would go on for ever. Now, about two years ago I was up for a replacement, and as business was good, and I need a machine with a lot of oomph so I can run several VMWares at a time, they told me I could get one of the more powerful machines Dell was making at the time: The Dell Precision M6500. Big box, intel I7, 16 gigs of memory, big 17" screen. Sounds nice eh? It wasn't full hate on first sight, but on first touch, that machine is _heavy_. Ans that's without the Chernobyl-sized external PSU (if you use a smaller, non 240 watt unit, the machine slows down. Considerably. And it doesn't charge, which isn't that big of a deal because even when fully charged with a new battery you're not going to get anything beyond a meagre 90min battery life. Not enough to watch an inflight movie but that doesn't matter, as hey, this box doesn't fit on your average economy class tray either. Or business for that matter. The only issue is that it hardly fits in the overhead bins on a ATR 42 either. After two years, the innards are fairly new. All of them. The outside aluminium shell is durable though, together with the 512Gb HD is the only part of the computer that hasn't been replaced by Dell Support. (If you're ever going to get a Dell PC, make sure you tick the "keep HD" option in the warranty options. You'll need it). The machine is big, unwieldy, and prone to breaking. The shell latch is vulnerable, the inside very prone to overheating. The outside to; this is not a laptop unless you want your lap to be cooked. The Dell Precision gets very, very hot. You probably could cook an egg on the bezel. I however do not get the impression that all that power is going to the CPU; the machine is actually quite slow in some respects; Booting Windows 7 (granted, not from a SSD) takes about four minutes, starting a browser can take up to twenty seconds. It does run a few VM's simultaneously, however, make sure you shut these down, before the machine hibernates. The box has a tendancy not to be able to wake up from hibernation.

I have a few colleagues who use them same box; none of them satisfied but each of us has different things that broke. I managed to get the USB 3 port to work, two of my coworkers with the same config following the same procedure didn't.

Again, I had a fair chance to speak to Dell support on this box on quite a few occassions, my employer got these with an extended warranty, and I had a few good experiences in the beginning (screen replacement within 24 hours), it got worse later. The last time it took more then a full week to get onsite support, and coordination between Dell telephone support and the outsourced companies that actually do the work is awful. And Dell telephone support actually puts the blame on the outsourcers, which doesn't sound very professional.

In short: If you want a high powered and reliable laptop, look somewhere else.

From what I can find out this was a laptop designed by Asus for Best Buy. It is hard to find it on Asus website although they do have the drivers available. I checked it out at Best Buy where I had gone to look at another brand. The feel of the keyboard and the monitor clarity won me over. I bought this to replace a dying laptop and it was my first experience with Windows 8 (I did try the beta but wasn't impressed). I didn't want a touch screen but I did want the memory and hard drive size. I was a bit concerned about the lack of an SSD drive but I haven't seen any speed issues that would make me sorry that feature wasn't included.

Pros: It is fast to start up, VERY fast. I have several Windows 7 computers (laptops, desktops, tablet.) It smokes them for speed when it comes to loading the operating system. It will also go to sleep and come out of it instantly with no hang ups. Response to loading programs, closing them etc. is exceptional. Battery life seems to be running over 5 hours which is what I expected.

Cons: A very few minor issues that I can live with but might not work well for someone else: Lighted keyboard I want a lit keyboard and it has one but it is very hard to make out the letters when they are lit so I ended up turning that feature off.

Touch pad Sometimes it can be unresponsive. It almost acts like it isn't getting a firm enough touch or drag from my finger. I put a wireless mouse on it and that works great. It can be frustrating trying to get the pad to respond. Since I have had several touch pads on laptops in the past I feel qualified to say it is not it's best feature.

Overall I love the laptop and would purchase an Asus again.

I got one from a Best Buy online sale for a very reasonable price. It is fast, light, sleek, and beautiful. I love this laptop.

Pros:

Performance: With the 3rd Generation Core i7 processor and 8 GB RAM this computer is a real performer. It is fast, quiet, and ice-cool!

Weight: At 4.2 lbs this computer is not the lightest but it is quite portable. With this configuration, if you are expecting some real performance then please don't go for the ultra-portables. They are just joke! This computer is no joke. It's meant for serious computation.

Screen: The screen is extremely bright and vivid in colors. The matte screen ensures that you get to see the video, and not your own face. I hate those glossy screens because of self reflection. But this one with its matte screen simply is great!

Keyboard: Backlit, chicklet keyboard. What I like about this keyboard is that the keys are very large and well spaced. The best thing I liked about the keyboard is that it has separate Home and End buttons. One important factor is the up/down scroll buttons. They are separate and nicely spaced unlike some other laptops in which these are so tiny that you end up pressing one in stead of the other!

Some people have complained about the silver color keys which absorb the back-lit effect. It is true to some extent. However, if you are typing in the well-lit environment, turning off the back-lit makes this better. And if you are in a low light condition, then the back-lit does help!

Speaker: Very loud and clear sound.

It has DVD drive. So unlike other lightweight laptops, you are not handicapped with this one.

Overall, it's a power packed compact laptop. I recommend it for anyone.

I am an apple person but I wanted to buy a decent laptop as an alternative at home since some of my work software only works with windows and I have to say this laptop is great for the price I paid. The screen is great, performance is great and the hardware seems ok. Obviously it's not a macbook and all but it also cost me a fourth of a macbook and the casing it black metal so I am pretty happy with it.

Great product, except no support to run windows 7. Drivers supported by manufacturer only for windows 7. Everything else is great, especially the design of the exterior.
