As a writer for LowEndMac ( I know my Mac. I've had this comptuer for a few months now and absolutely love it! While it's not my main computer, I use it to take to class and around campus. Paired with an AirPort card it's awesome. For the price, this provides every I'd ever need. The small size is great to take around campus or anywhere, and everyone thinks it's so cute!

First thing I should mention: I bought this laptop at a spectacular sale price. I paid $729 for this machine with 640mb of RAM (maxed out) and an Airport card with it. I highly recommend that you do max it out. I played with the 128mb version of this in Compusa and I noticed it to be significantly slower. When maxed out, this machine will run significantly faster than my 1.67Ghz Windows XP desktop in any task you will throw at it. On top of that, the Mac OS is far superior to anything ever put out by Microsoft. It's stable, easy to use, it just works. I have OS X Panther on this and I highly recommend it. I could never live without Expose, Apples far superior answer to the PC bar at the bottom. For those who are not familiar with it, this new feature in Panther will allow you to push F9 on the keyboard and show every window that is open. It will show exactly what is happening in that window at the moment, meaning that if I were to have a video running on it, the video would play on the tiny window as I look for the window I want. I click the window and it goes back to normal, only with that window on top. VERY USEFUL.

Besides that, this machine is very well designed. The ports are on the side, no more reaching behind to plug it in. Its got a thick layer of plastic casing, yet is just over an inch thick. The 12 inch screen is amoung the clearest I've ever seen, and is suprisingly easy to use. The speakers are just okay, but you don't buy a laptop for speakers anyway. The snow colored design is absolutly beautiful, and is a nice plus. The screen is on a solid bar, not one of those flimsy PC hinges. This is the most solidly built, yet lightest, thinnest, most compact laptops I've ever owned or used. I have had several PC laptops before this one, and this is, by far, the best machine I have ever owned.

By the way, the battery life on this machine is, to sum it up in one word, unbelievable. I can get about 4 hours of battery life while watching VIDEOS on this, surfing the web I can get upwards of four and a half or more! The low power consumption of the G3 processor makes this an ultra-portable machine.

For those who are considering switching. Don't be discouraged by the OS right away. It is something you will need to get used to, but after a few days you will never know how you ever lived without it. I now go back to my PC and just absolutly despise it every second I use it. I have now gotten used to the Mac and enjoy it more than I ever did with my PC. You know what they say, once you've gone Mac, you don't ever go back.

Well, to sum it up, this machine is perfect. I have yet to come across any sort of flaw whatsoever. Mac has thought this thing through, their attention to detail is amazing. Everything down to the little hook that comes out just as you close the lid to lock it shut has been designed perfectly. This isn't something that has just been scrapped together by Dell or something, this is a powerful piece of computing genius that has been designed for people out to make the intelligent choice for their computing needs. If you're stupid, go the ways of the PC world and conform to the ways of Bill Gates If you're smart, buy a Mac, you won't regret it. I guarantee!

I have now ordered 2 of these computers. One for my friend who needed a new computer and one for myself for when my current Lenovo dies. I have the G560 laptop and LOVE it. I like that this computer has 4 ports, mine only has 2. I like that it has windows 7. I really think the price is outstanding. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the speakers are not the greatest for watching movies but I just use headphones.

I've been using this for months and it has been fast and reliable. You can't beat it for the money! If you need to do graphics work or video rendering, obviously since this doesn't have a dedicated video card--it wouldn't be a good choice for videographers or photographers running Photoshop or other graphic intense applications.

Best Deals for Lenovo G570 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Great secure packing from Lenovo. Didn't come prepacked with a bunch of junk. But also not loaded with normal things like adobe and flash.

Computer housing, keyboard and touchpad is flimsier than I expected. Is slower than I thought. There seems to be different versions of G570. Which is very confusing.

G570 has a 320G hard drive and 2.2 GHz Pentium B960, and G570 4334eau has 500G hard drive and icore3. I was shopping on a friend's computer under the duress of a HP (piece of s... laptop's CPU failure) and did not notice the extra letters in the different G570 models. I thought I was getting a great deal for $379. Since I've only had it for a month maybe I got an ok older no longer carried by lenovo model. I would have preferred something faster and sturdier.

Two HP laptops I've had failed in just 3 years each. Nvida card melt down in first and CPU failure in the cheap class action suit replacement. Since I was determined not to buy HP ever again or torture myself with Windows 8 my total laptop selection was limited.

I bought this notebook as a safety net in case my other systems had a problem. The size is just right for something that lays around my workspace and does not get in the way. The on board software was a real bargin as I needed the window 7 professonal. The more I use it the more I like it. Some days I don't turn my desktop on for the business day. Overall I am very satisfied and would buy it again.

Bottom-Line: Hands down, the Dell Latitude E6500 is a performance winner.

Now that Windows 7 is finally on the street, it is time for another technology refresh; this time the entire department traded up to the Dell "Latitude E6500 Notebook" computer. Dell constructed the business-class notebook of a magnesium alloy, rugged paint finish and tough metal hinges, which makes the "Latitude E6500" more durable than older Dell portable offerings.

My slate black (it can also be had in red and blue) "Latitude E6500" doesn't feel any heavier than the notebook it replaces, a Dell Latitude 8 series, which makes carrying the portable desktop replacement everyday easy on the shoulders and back. But the "Latitude E6500" is far more capable than the Latitude D820 checking in with 4GB of Ram, an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 15.4" Premium WXGA LED display.

The Laptop

The "Latitude E6500" comes very close to being a full fledged, full feathered desktop replacement; the unit houses your choice of Intel Core 2 Duo Processors; mine shipped with the base P8600 running at 2.40GHz with 3MB L2 cache, on a 1066MHz FSB. And while the D600 only sported (2) USB 2.0 ports, the ruggedized "Latitude E6500" has 4 including a combo USB/Power port and combo USB/eSATA.

In addition the notebook can be had with a integrated fingerprint reader, as well as only (1) PC Card/ExpressCard 54 slot, (1) 4-pin mini-Firewire port, Smartcard slot, 5-n-1 card reader, E-Family modular media bay: (8X DVD-ROM, 24X CDRW/DVD, 8X DVD+/-RW, second Hard Drive or Travel Lite Module), and Port Replication port to round out the expandability of this performance packed laptop.

Starting at some 5.2-pounds the "Latitude E6500" feels comfortable while typing on the broad, full featured back-lit keyboard, that is complemented by a pointing stick and a touch pad; both of which have their own sets of mouse buttons. The feel of the keyboards' keys reminds me of the IBM keyboards of old that felt good on the fingers and felt almost metallic and strong.

And both can be set up to disable themselves automatically when an external pointing device is added to an available USB port. You can optionally configure the "Latitude E6500" to use biometric security (fingerprint reader), which can be integrated into the right hand side of the laptop below the keyboard.

The "Latitude E6500" features a bright, crisp, 15.4-inch UltraSharp WUXGA wide screen with an ultra-fine, 1900 x 1200 native resolution that renders great graphics, but makes the text and icons difficult to read; I have my screen set to 1280x768, which proves to be a very workable setting for me.

In the area of wireless networking, the "Latitude E6500" excels. Unlike other laptops I have used that integrate wireless into the case--usually in the screen housing--the "Latitude E6500" incorporates a switch on the right edge of the laptop that turns the wireless adapter off and on: slide the switch forward, and the built-in 802.11 b/g wireless card automatically searches for available networks, displaying those available on the screen and indicating whether the network is 11Mbps or a faster (G) network. The WiFi switch can also be configured to switch on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both of them.

In addition to the ports I mentioned above the "Latitude E6500" also features a standard VGA, infrared, 56Kbps modem, Gigabit Ethernet, headphone, and microphone jacks. Because the "Latitude E6500" is built for the business user, the unit lacks multimedia features such as S-Video, S/PDIF audio, and a HDMI port, and more USB ports that might typically be found on consumer/multi-media-oriented laptops. The D280 does house a DVD/CD-RW drive, which together with the included CyberLink PowerDVD software can used to view movie while on the road.

The "Latitude E6500" can be fitted with a maximum of 8GB of Dual Channel DDR2 RAM, and 250GB HHD. However, there a number of hard drive choices including solid state drives with a capacity of up to 128GB.

First Impressions:

I like my new Dell "Latitude E6500." The unit is light weight, sturdy and performs quite well thanks in larger part to the ultra-fast Intel Core Duo processor and 4GB of DDR2 Dual-Channel RAM under the hood. This makes the E6500 markedly and noticeably faster than a single-core system. This means that the notebook runs Windows 7 Enterprise Edition run really, really well.

I like the look and feel of the notebook. It is lightweight, but still durable easy to carry to and from work every day. And did I mention the stellar back-lit keyboard? It lights up when a single key is clicked and turns off automatically after about 5 seconds of inactivity.

The best feature of the "Latitude E6500" is the UWXGA display. The 15.4 inch screen is bright, crisp and clear. It is not the best LCD display I have ever used, but it is more than adequate for business use, and for playing the occasional DVD.

Conclusions

Hands down, the Dell "Latitude E6500" is a performance winner, especially when mated with Windows 7 Enterprise Edition. I like the increased processing power, the increased batter power, and increased memory. And the laptop is handsome to look at! Though I doubt I will ever have cause to use the 4-pin Firewire port, or the eSATA port, for that matter, it is nice to know its there just in case, and (4) USB ports has certainly com in handy.

I love this laptop. I work in IT, no I'm not a 20 yr veteran but I know a good pc at a good price when I see it. A couple things I'll say about performance. Boot times seem fast to me, but I'll admit I'm used to my SLOW old laptop. 4g of ram is excellent, PLENTY for a web surfing email type user. So far it is sufficient for mid grade power users in my experience. I was able to run vmware (for those who dont know it's a software that allows you to run multiple operating systems simulatensously in different windows, for example Windows 7 and Windows XP). I have ran an XP virtual machine while working off my Windows 7 pc at the same time. It was very smooth transitioning, I was honestly surprised by this. (Note: I wasn't running demanding applications on the 2 systems.)

I'll admit the second day I bought this I got a shutdown error twice, but I hadn't shutdown incorrectly. This has not happened since, over a week and a half later. For the price it has a good sized monitor, battery life seems good to me but I plugin almost all the time, webcam and mic are nice for skyping. I've never owned a webcam and am very satisfied with the preinstalled software. I am not a hardware expert but I know the processor is decent. Considering my performance has been good I'd say the processor is doing it's job.

I don't do a lot of pc gaming, but I have tried some decent free to play games like Offensive Combat (a google search can find this) and the frame rates are good enough for me. I have not tried anything graphic intensive. I am also an avid musician. That said I have not had time to install Pro Tools or Ableton Live yet, but I will update later with my experience.

The ports are sufficient. I think maybe an extra usb port would be nice but 3 gives me what I need. HDMI port is also a plus. I bought this product from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346614854&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+to+dvi) and it works great to extend to my external monitor. I use an external hard drive so the 500gb is unnecessary for me, however it is a huge amount of space and would be great for others.

The only other thing I can think to mention for any rookies is that 64bit Windows 7 is the "newest" windows operating system other than Windows 8 which will be released soon. 64bit is "better" than 32 bit. Here's why from microsoft themselves. "The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system." Click start, right click on Computer, select properties: to see what operating system you currently are using.

Have a great day everyone, remember: "Everyday you have some trouble, when you worry you make it double."

** UPDATE: I added a video of me playing bass to give an idea of what this mic/webcam can capture. You can also see an intro fade and maybe 1 or 2 transitions between clips. This is the software I was talking about that comes for the webcam. PLEASE NOTE I AM USING COMPUTER SPEAKERS AND AN EXTERNAL AUDIO INTERFACE TO PLAY THE BASS THROUGH THE COMPUTER. YOU ARE NOT HEARING THE SOUND OF THIS PC'S SPEAKERS.

First of all, I'm no computer genius. I wanted a laptop that could run Reason which is a music program for producing drums and much more. I was told by two employees from different stores that this laptop would not be able to run it. This is bullshit. Works just fine. And for everyone else looking for a decent computer for cheap, buy it. Is it the fastest laptop? No but it's fast enough. I've had no issues with the internet. I've watched videos and downloaded music with no problems. Any customer service rep out there will tell you that you need the "holy shit" computer to do anything. I promise you that this isn't true. Hope this helps!

I actually bought the VPC-F121GX from a known member-only warehouse. For $1,099, you get Win7 Pro instead of Win7 Home on F121FX (note the slight model difference). However, I bought the display unit for another 10% off since that was the very last unit they had.

I love the feel and layout of this Vaio keyboard. The brightness control of screen is also very user friendly because it adds automatic brightness adjustment in addition to the user defined brightness level. Initially, I was fooled into thinking the LCD is defective/infurior because it is very dim and I had already turned the brightness to maximum. By accident, I tunred on my desk lamp which shined brightly right onto the LCD, BANG, Vaio automatically cranked up the LCD brightness to compensate for the extra lighting from desk lamp. That's when I realized this feature, which I came to love. With other laptops, I often had to manually adjust LCD brightness based on the ambient lighting condition. keyboard light also turns on automatically if it detects that the surrounding is too dark.

The other thing I really like about this Vaio is that it's probably the lightest in its class. It probably is also the thinest and smallest it its class. Overall, I love the user experience of this Vaio.

I am taking 1 star off due to the price. I think the price can be a bit cheaper. Then again, Sony products tend to be costing just a bit more than other brands.

The hardware configuration of Vaio matches better on how I use the laptop. However, it isn't the best bang for the buck. I still think the best bang for the buck is Asus G51JX-X5, which I paid $1,150 recently. However, G51JX-X5 is a gaming laptop and I don't play any games. In the back of my mind, I paid something for the supposedly game-grade graphics capability, which I may never use. That is one major reason that I decided to also buy this Sony Vaio.

If you are gamer, I'd recommend buying G51. If you don't play games and appreciate user experience, buy this Vaio.

I bought my Sony Vaio 9 months ago with an extended warranty. It worked well for 6 months until one day the speakers completely died on me.

I have spent the next 3 months trying to get Sony to repair the laptop for me. I spent the first month just on the phone, trying to convince tech support that my computer had had a hard drive failure. Over the next month-and-a-half they had three appointments where they sent people over to repair my computer. The first time they replaced the speakers, the second time they replaced the motherboard and the third time they replaced the sound card. All three attempts were unsuccessful; the sound still did not work.

My computer is now at a repair center. I have no computer to work on right now (I had to borrow someone else's computer to write this review).

This is my experience with Sony Vaio. Maybe you'll have a better one. Who knows?

I bought brand new last July. It never worked quite right. The cursor jumped everywhere so I bought a keyboard. It helped a little but sometimes the cursor would open another application or close the application I was using. In Oct I had to replace the hard drive. In Feb. it died. No power, nothing. Eventually a tech came out and replaced the mother board but the hard drive was dead again. I sent it to San Diego to get repaired or replaced. Over 2 weeks later they called and said they were going to replace it. I got the replacement, barely an upgrade. Customer relations was never very helpful throughout the process. I had to write a letter to a VP in San Diego to get things done. Would not buy another Sony computer. Too many problems and they will keep replacing parts until the warranty runs out and you will have to pay.

Let me first say that this is not my first Acer netbook, nor is it my first Acer computer. I presently own an older Acer Aspire One that took a pretty decent fall a ways back and has a broken screen, which I now just use to control my home automation and security system and cameras (everything else still works, just have to use an eternal monitor.) I also have an Acer desktop computer that I absolutely love and has given me zero trouble which I use for gaming and general computing.

The beginning of May 2012, I purchased TWO Acer Aspire One D270s, one D270-1182 (Burgundy Red) and one D270-1410 (Espresso Black)

PRO:

Both are very light, comfortable sized, and easy to use. I found the price point to be attractive and overall felt it to be a good value. Battery life is good, the mult-gesture touchpad is nice, easy to use the built in webcam and microphone for Skype etc. I bought this pair mainly to skype with my mother while I travel, and for me to surf the web and listen to music as an alternative to my work computer while traveling. My mother has trouble with computers and all other electronics, so I was impressed that she was able to use it comfortably and learn it quickly. The large hard drive also makes it possible for this to be a primary computer for her as well.

CON:

Understandable for a netbook, it is relatively slow, stock from the box. The 1 Gig of RAM that it ships with is way too small to run windows 7 and browse the web quickly or play any large games. While it is passable, those who are used to working with a desktop or full sized notebook will definitely notice the difference. While a RAM upgrade is cheap in terms of parts, it is relatively complicated on this model netbook. To upgrade ram, you must remove the keyboard, many screws and it's a little tricky to get the case completely apart. (There are videos on YouTube that will show you how to do this step by step.) I am a moderate to advanced user, and I performed the upgrade myself in about 30 minutes total, it was a little more complicated than I initially thought it would be but not horrible. (My older Acer netbook has an access port to access the ram, and it was a 30 second, 2 screw upgrade.) This netbook will only recognize 2GB of ram with Windows 7, however I did install a 4GB module. I duel boot in Linux, and Linux does recognize all 4GB. The RAM upgrade made a huge difference, and now I'd say its pretty decently fast for a netbook. My mother was running hers stock on the 1GB of ram and didn't have any complaints.

Double Con, or maybe just my bad luck:

Right out of the box, I had intermittent issues with the screen flickering on BOTH netbooks. It occurs most noticeably and frequently while watching video. This includes while using Skype as well. My mom's D270-1182 also crashed several times while I was setting it up brand new from the box. Then, after she used the computer only a few times, and during a Skype call, her netbook inexplicably shut off and the hard drive died. It was a complete hardware failure of the hard drive, computer would not boot or power up the HD. My diagnosis is a total hard drive failure for an unknown reason. I contacted Acer and they were very good about setting up a warranty repair and sending me a return label for what they are estimating to be a 7-10 business day repair. I just sent it out today, so we'll see how it goes when it comes back.

When setting up the return for her netbook, I asked about the screen flicker issue on both of them, and I was told they do not know of it as a "known bug". I did do some research, and note that several other people are reporting this issue as well. They also gave me a return label for my D270-1410 to return it to investigate the screen flicker issue. So, after less than 60 days, both of them are going back to Acer for warranty repair.

While I'm not thrilled with the double whammy of issues that I had, I'm not going to write them off completely, maybe I just have bad luck... Acer seemed to be very helpful with setting up the warranty service, and I won't know how they do for sure until they come back from Acer. I will update this review once I get them back!

My overall rating:

It's OK, but I wouldn't recommend this model to my friends.

This is a great little netbook and I have had zero problems with it. It's literally the last brand new netbook I could find that has Windows 7 (or any type of windows for that matter). Now it's all gone to annoying chrome, which isn't what you necessarily want if you are a college student in need of more document programs than google docs. This thing is awesome and I haven't had any connectivity problems, unlike my old Asus netbook. Videos are fast and download easily. My perfect little computer, I only wish I had had the option of getting it in blue, but whatever!

One comment made here that this is a ton of bricks does not correctly comment on this lap top. This is one of the best lap tops ever made and is still good enough to use for your primary lap top. The one I bought here was maxed out as far as ram and storage, making it the best powerbook available. I purchased a mac book 13 inch for someone and this powerbook for her son and by far this computer is faster and of much higher quality then the white lap top that cost me twice as much to buy. Be aware it is a little heavier but it is better to have a lap top that is a joy to use then a lighter version that is half the fun. Good purchase and good lap top. Live streaming is the only problem I have had but I have been able to go on ABC news live with the adobe these laptops have. I wish it was mine but am happy for my friend I bought this for.

Needed a laptop for some classes; the laptop is the heaviest one I've ever owned, so I won't be carrying it around too often; also wasn't aware how much trouble I'd have streaming videos or downloading programs since it is the old Power PC model (can't even find a decent compatible adobe version anymore); definitely should've gotten a slightly newer model

I have enjoyed using this laptop for about 6 months. Intel i5 processor is fast and 6GB of RAM makes multitasking a breeze. Start up is fast, about 20 seconds until fingerprint reader. Really like the fingerprint reader feature, keeps data quite secure. Keyboard has nice feel and touchpad is very responsive. Only change would be a larger delete key. The fit and finish is excellent. The brushed gunmetal aluminum cover and keyboard looks great. Appearance is much better than plastic. Highly recommend this laptop.

I type A LOT. This computer is NOT one I'd recommend if you also type a lot. The keyboard layout is not so great the shift key on the right is much smaller than a standard shift key. I thought I'd adjust to this, but after having the computer for almost a month, I'm still having to search for the shift key while typing, and I often hit the arrow-up key instead, which then requires me to readjust my position in the text I'm typing. Really an unnecessarily bad feature. However, this I can handle in comparison to the touchpad. My goodness!! This thing has a mind of it's own! I'll want to scroll down and it will instead enlarge the view of my screen. I'll want to enlarge the view of my screen and it will instead scroll down. I cannot copy things the way I'd like to either instead of highlighting a line of text to copy, the touchpad will interpret my attempts at highlighting as me wanting to pull and drag the text elsewhere (which might be all right if I was able to highlight an entire line before it attempts to do this). Totally useless. All this being said, I have to add that it's a fast machine. This is why I gave it 3 stars. It's worth the money in that respect for sure (I bought mine new for a little over $500). If you don't mind fumbling with a possessed touchpad, and having to search for the shift key over and over again (which slows down typing and leads to errors), then I'd recommend this laptop. But, if you type a lot or enjoy properly navigating with a touchpad mouse, DO NOT GET THIS LAPTOP!!

I love the look and the feel! Never had such a beautiful machine.

Specs are fine. Lighted keyboard is great. You can even a just it or put it off.

I just find it needs a upgrade to more RAM. So I just bought a 8GB ram 12500 speed.

That should smoothen operation a bit. All in all I would buy it again. Great laptop for business.

Not a good laptop for gaming. Graphic card is not made for that to my opinion.

This laptop packs a lot of features into an incredible price. For your everyday email, browsing, spreadsheets, etc. this machine with its quad-core processor handles everything with ease. I was most impressed as I tried out some more entertaining apps (games) as well as streaming videos nice and smooth and the system doesn't get hot or every feel like its working hard. For its features, I love the full size keyboard as well as number pad, and there is plenty of memory and hard drive size for what I need.

One of the coolest new features, which took me some time to get used to, is the ability to use the touch screen. Once I got used to Windows8 and the touch interface, I've found that if I use anyone else's notebook I wind up touching their screen and am surprised when nothing happens. Its great for quickly browsing through photos, scrolling through web pages and getting around the new Windows8 interface.

My only criticism would be that it needs a higher definition screen (which of course would make it more expensive) so its a qualified criticism.

If you are ready to ditch your old notebook and jump into the world of touch with a full featured notebook at price that can't be beat, this is the machine for you.

Don't let the price fool you, this laptop has lots of power and compared to my old Intel unit, is at least 3x's as powerful when it comes to graphics. I'm a digital animator, I budget on excel, and do just about anything you can imagine on my computer, so if this baby can handle everything I throw at it, it'll handle everything you can throw at it too.

After doing some research on laptops, I came across this specific model and was impressed with the specifications. I had read many people dislike Windows 8, so I was a bit skeptical. However, since I bought it, I can't seem to stop bragging about it! The laptop is thin, sleek, and fast! The screen size is perfect and clear. I LOVE the touchscreen! It makes everything so much easier and faster! I use on a daily basis to access my email, view documents, etc.. and it works marvelous! Love it!

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion 15-b150us 15.6-Inch Ultra Thin TouchSmart Sleekbook

Pros: Starts quickly, handles even memory-intensive programs quite well, responsive touchscreen.

Cons: Touchpad over-sensitive, right and left buttons are very loud and annoying.

Without a good touchscreen, Windows 8 is a real irritation, since the interface for starting and managing programs was optimized for a touchscreen. However, this Pavilion has a very responsive one that also does a decent job of resisting smudges, even if it does need a good cleaning easily once a week.

My big concern for this computer was power. I use Photoshop quite a bit and wasn't at all sure that it would handle it. Those concerns cleared up right away. Programs open up very quickly, including some of the typically slow ones like Libre Office and Photoshop.

The touchpad is very sensitive, so much so that you'll very likely want to disable the swipe function (just Google disable swipe on Windows 8). You'll also probably want to set Chrome to Desktop Mode or it will swoop open and closed without your wanting it to.

The thing that most annoys me now that I have those settings is just how noisy the trackpad buttons are. In a quiet room, they're irritatingly audible, the kind of thing that would drive a highly-strung roommate quite insane, I suspect.

So for the price, it's quite a decent deal. As the specs suggest, it's a bit heavy for a "carry it around all the time" tablet, but if I were traveling and didn't want to be limited to a mini, it's still easily portable.

I've had the laptop for about a month and I can still say that I made a good investment! The option of having a touchscreen and a regular keyboard is cool; the touchscreen and the keyboard works flawlessly! The image quality is great; the colors on the screen are very vibrant. The speed of the laptop is great, even when I multi-task and have several windows open. The design of the laptop is nice too! In my opinion, this laptop works just as great as a MAC laptop (I have a MAC laptop that I use at work) and it is MUCH cheaper, which is a HUGE PLUS!!! I highly recommended this laptop to my family and friends!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Likes:

The black textured plastic finish is very nice, and is used as top-side panels (top cover, palm rest). I like this better than the two-tone metallic finish since it looks more integrated, more business-like, and less as a "tack-on" like the metallic sheet accents in the 15RM. It also means the side and bottom plastic isn't a silver painted variety, but a hard ABS plastic that when scratched, will stay the same color and harder to detect. In my opinion, it is more practical and unpretentious, and the textured finish makes it no less aesthetically appealing--and in my opinion more so--than the metallic trim edition.

Windows 8 is apparently a very touch-centric OS. I suspect that may have caused some initial complaints and awkwardness with mouse and keyboard users (myself included). Having a touch screen really alters the experience. It's really more like a tablet with a keyboard than a PC with touch screen. In that sense, it is also more intuitive for users who are not tech-savvy or uncomfortable with computers. With a fairly large and vibrant glass touch screen, this laptop offers the full Windows 8 experience. I know this is a controversial issue, but while I still miss the start button, I grew to like the user experience, as did my family--especially my parents who were really uncomfortable of PCs in the past.

The overall build quality feels solid, with hard ABS plastic tub as the main chassis that's fairly durable. The touchpad is very responsive, and the keyboard has a good tactile feel. The glass touch screen apparently have enhanced the lid's rigidity as well, reducing flex which can often be an issue with large screen plastic shell laptops.

The i3 may seem like a low end processor, but to my understanding the i5 offers in addition "turbo" mode and virtualization. The former offers a small gain (a few hundred MHz in the lower end models) in clock speed for single thread applications (such as encoding), which isn't terribly common in daily tasks that are often multithreaded. The virtualization is used for Virtual Machines, XP Mode, VMWare, etc., which I suspect is probably not terribly useful for most of us. In that sense it's really the best bang for the buck, and it excelled at daily tasks like browsing, movies, Office, and the like. It handled everything we threw at it very smoothly.

The battery on this machine actually lasts longer than I expected for this screen size. With around medium usage like playing music and video, I was able to get 3-4 hours. If I try to use it mostly to encode a video or do some 3D gaming, I could still get 2-3 hours. It would last longer, such as 4-5 hours, if you were just doing light tasks like office or browsing.

The onboard Intel 4000 integrated graphics isn't the fastest or the most powerful, but other than 3D gaming, it really handles everything else with aplomb. It plays full HD videos without any issues, and the HDMI out can also let you connect to a larger monitor and TV with even higher resolution than the laptop monitor. It worked with my 27" 2560x1440 monitor just fine. Connect a bluetooth/usb keyboard and mouse, it can be an affordable and versatile energy efficient desktop as well.

It's easily upgradeable. This cannot be overemphasized especially seeing how the "ultrabook" concept often eschew upgradable ease for aesthetics. Both the hard drive and the two SO-DIMM memory slots are easily accessible through the bottom hatch cover with a few screws. It can house two SO-DIMM chips so the maximum capacity would be 16GB of RAM (it comes installed in both slots with 2GB each). The SATA drive can also be replaced with a SSD drive easily as well.

Good Connectivitycomes with bluetooth built in, something that can be appreciated when there are more bluetooth enabled portable devices/peripherals than ever: mice, keyboards, speakers, etc. 4 USB Ports (2 of which are USB 3.0) and HDMI makes for very updated connectivity. The built in multi-card reader as well as DVD burner drive also wouldn't hurt.

Some Potential Issues:

The aforementioned black textured top cover (on the back of the top lid and palm rest), while looking more expensive than it is, still manages to pick up and show oil mark from palm where it is handled. Similar issue with the touchpad and palm rest area. The black just shows oily smudges and lint/dust a bit easier. However, that largely depends on how it is used. A little cleaning easily takes care of that.

It's not the most portable computer at over 5 pounds. With a 15.6" screen, you probably shouldn't expect it to be. This is probably more suitable for infrequent relocation where you get a larger screen and full size keyboard as a trade-off.

The screen resolution is only 1366x768 (good enough for 720p), with no optional upgrades apparently. In the era of ultra high resolution displays (e.g. Retina), that's probably going to be a gripe for some. People would probably expect at least a full HD (e.g. 1920x1080) display, especially given the large 15"+ screen size. However, given the price point and touch screen, the resolution isn't unreasonable. It is suitable enough for most daily tasks, and the lower resolution density makes for larger text and pictures for much easier viewing (particularly for seniors). There is always the option of connecting to an external monitor via HDMI, as mentioned above.

The Intel HD4000 integrated graphics isn't good for 3D gaming, so you probably shouldn't look at this if you plan on playing 3D games with it, unless you can stand lowest rendering settings with low framerates. 2D games, however, are very smooth and easily managed.

The included 500GB hard drive is a typical 2.5" 5400RPM drive. Like its storage capacity, it's adequate, and hasn't presented me with any issues with performance or responsiveness. One should probably not expect better at this price point. It may feel slow to some (especially if you are used to desktops with 7200RPM drives or even SSDs), yet it does have the advantage of reduced heat and power consumption over 7200RPM hard drives. If speed is really a priority, SSD is the way to go (at a premium), and can be easily upgraded.

No D-Sub VGA port. It should probably be phased out in modern laptops anyway. This may be an issue only if you use legacy products with only VGA support, such as older presentation projectors. However, a HDMI to VGA adapter is inexpensive and easily solves that.

Notes:

Dell has been a solid choice for budget laptops for years. I personally think this is a great iteration that doesn't feel cheap, but looks professional and almost expensive. The touch screen really completes the included Windows 8, and makes for an intuitive user experience that may be worth your giving it the benefit of the doubt. This is not meant to be a high end laptop, so if you tend to have CPU or graphic intensive tasks (e.g. video rendering, 3D Modeling, 3D gaming, etc.), or want something ultra-portable, you should probably look to pay more for something else. (In my opinion, if you really need ultra-portability, tablet/smartphones is probably the way to go). Yet if you don't carry around your laptop often, or just want something more efficient and smaller than desktop PC, without sacrificing too much power and comfort: this Inspiron offers easy upgradability, vibrant touch-screen, decent battery life, solid construction, and good performance. If you don't mind the bulk, this is a very affordable, functional and solid laptop that will easily satisfy.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This laptop really packs a punch! It will do all of the web surfing, email, itunes, music, etc that you can throw at it! I've even done a little low end gaming and a little video editing on it and it even works smoothly for that! I'm gonna try to touch a little on each aspect of the laptop and how it has performed to me so far..

Webcam

Pretty Solid, It appears to be better than the iPhone cameras and my old laptop one, or so say my callers :P

Hard Drive

Nice and speedy, is not a 7200rpm though but I'm sure people don't move copious amounts of data on their laptops though.

DVD Burner

No blanks, burns fast and isn't as annoyingly loud as my previous laptops drive.

Media Card Reader

A great feature to have, It works and no more draining my cameras battery life in order to get pics off of it!

Processor

Is a new Core i3 dual core and this beats my old laptops core2duo hands down. Much snappier, never lags and even works great to render some small videos, I was surprised how well it performs compared to my farm more expensive Core i7 in my gaming rig I just built.

RAM

4GB? That's more than you will ever need in an "Everday Lappy"

Windows 8

I was so worried about trying Win8 The new start menu and everything seemed like such a turn off but it's actualy fairly pleasant because you have a touchscreen so it really does feel more natural. Just like Win7 Win8 is smooth and very efficient unlike that "Vista" mishap *cough*

Touchscreen

The screen is very bright, crisp and clear. Give it a nice wipe down with a microfiber at the end of each day in order to prevent smudging and fingerprinting. It's very responsive and it smooth to the touch as well. Something I never thought we would see in this price range for awhile!

Audio/Speakers

It's okay, again it is a laptop so don't expect excellent quality bass and everything with the built in speakers. For everyday use and some light gaming it is more than adequate though.

Battery Life

Laptop seems to be energy efficient, I am getting at least 5-6 hours with surfing use on a single charge. Charging time is pretty snappy as well.

Touchpad

Smooth but a light textured feel to it so there is no "skidding" of your fingers when you are trying to scroll fast, Responsive.

Bluetooth

I do not own any bluetooth devices but this should be handy for those of you who like the wireless headphones or have that wireless data cards.

Wireless

This thing gets some pretty strong signal range. Our router is kept up in the attic and I get full signal anywhere in the house, and even out to the edge of our property in both the front and back yards. It's been nice sitting in the shade outside as summer winds down and be on skype calls or the like outside.

Build Quality

Weighs in at around 5 pounds, Have a nice solid feel to it although it is made with a plastic shell. The screen has a little flex to it, It's fairly thin but it shouldnt be a problem unless you really "try" to flex it. I would imagine that it would survive many falls from your lap onto the floor though. The outside texture/design is pretty cool too. Nothing fancy, but it's better than just a smooth and plain texture.

Graphics

The build in Intel graphics look pretty sweet. Playing some of my DVD and Bluray collection on the laptop looks amazing. It can even be used as a "player" when hooked up to your HD tvs via the HDMI connection. This plays my favorite games at around medium settings with shadows turned off (shadows are the hardest on the graphics processors to process) and it has performed well even after hours of playing.

Software/Bloatware

Just say no, Make it a habit to remove all of the factory included software. :]

Being a Windows 8 hater really forced me to carefully choose a laptop for a friend as Win7 laptops are sparse and usually only the over priced models are available.

With that said, this laptop has a touch screen, which is pretty much required to make the best use of Win8, it has the ivy bridge processor which is best for power management. Some laptops in this price range don't have DVD/CD players in them but this one does.

It worked perfectly out of the box, is fast, and allows Win8 to achieve its greatest potential.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-6144BLK 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Black

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My Laptop & Windows History:

Prior to getting this laptop I'd been using my previous one for about 4 years. It was an ASUS and had Windows 7 on it. I liked that one but it was getting old and outdated, full and slow. It was time for a new one. Earlier this year I purchased a Samsung laptop that came with Windows 8. The laptop was horrible. It was slow and cheaply made. I ended up returning it after just a few days. Since this was my first experience with Windows 8 it left a bad impression in my head. I thought my problem with that laptop had something to do with that. When we returned that laptop we told Customer Service that it was like taking a laptop from 10 years ago and slapping a new title on it and installing Windows 8 on it. It was really primitive.

This Laptop with Windows 8:

I was a bit nervous getting this Dell laptop since it comes with Windows 8 but that's pretty much all you can find on the market today. Turns out that I was nervous for nothing. This laptop rocks! Although I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8, it's certainly not as bad as I thought it was. It's easy to maneuver around it.

Size and Keyboard Layout:

Bigger is not always better in my findings with laptops. I do a ton of typing so the keyboard layout is very important to me. I find the layout on the 15.6" laptop very comfortable and spaced out just right. It's not too compact making it difficult to type and it's not too spaced out that you have to reach a bit more than you'd like. They number pad and the arrows are really great on this laptop. On my ASUS laptop I hit the wrong button often and my wrist was a little uncomfortable when using the number pad. The layout on this laptop is just perfect for me in every way.

Other thoughts:

SpeedI think this laptop is very fast. And I love how you can boot it up and you're good to go in less than a minute.

Picture QualityThe picture looks great on this laptop. With that Samsung laptop that I had, the picture quality was awful. I have absolutely no complaints about the graphic quality on this laptop. It's very high quality.

Touch ScreenI've never used a Touch Screen laptop before so I wasn't sure how good it would be. What a great feature. It works really well and always does what I'm telling it to do. I haven't had any issues with it and although I thought I'd have fingerprints or smudges all over the screen I don't. I love this feature.

Space500GB is the minimum that I wanted in a laptop so this is a great size for me. Really good for the price.

CD / DVD DriveA CD Drive is not an option for me, it must have one. There are so many laptops out there nowadays that no longer have this feature. I was very happy to see that this laptop has it. It works great too. On my previous laptop I was constantly accidentally opening the CD Drive. This isn't a problem on this laptop. It stays closed. You have to push a small little button in just the right way to get this one to pop open. This is a plus for me.

Textured FinishAlthough I like the feel of the textured finish on this laptop, it leaves way too many fingerprints. It's difficult to clean them off too. When the laptop is just lying there closed it doesn't look too great because it always looks like there are greasy fingerprints all over it. Our hands are always clean when we use the laptop so it's just the oils from your skin that leaves marks. This would probably be the only thing that I would complain about with this laptop.

SolidnessWhen I had the Samsung laptop for a few days I noticed that it felt empty. It just felt like an empty plastic shell. This laptop feels solid and it's not a cheap plastic feel. This laptop feels how a laptop should feel.

Getting startedRight out of the box I found this laptop to be fast and easy to set-up. I had it up and running in probably 5-10 minutes. It's a very simple set-up process.

Overall I absolutely love this laptop and I would highly recommend it. It's a great everyday laptop that I find to be very high quality.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-6144BLK 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Black

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This Dell Inspiron was my first foray into Windows 8, and I think the touchscreen really made the new OS shine. It's easy to use and fairly intuitive, something I can see appealing across generation lines from little kids to seniors.

The touchscreen is certainly the most advanced feature this laptop can boast. Overall, this is a budget laptop that does everything an average user needs it to do.

It's a large, fairly heavy laptop best suited for a desk. It's not the sort of laptop I imagine people will move from room to room throughout the day, more for someone who wants to have a computer that's portable so they can occasionally bring it with them when they really need to. The screen resolution is fairly low for 2013, but it's really fine for most uses and it has an HDMI out so you can connect it to a larger monitor or your TV easily on occasion. I don't love the textured finish, but that's really an aesthetic choice on my part and nothing that takes away from the functionality of the laptop.

For those who aren't ready to go completely to the cloud, or like to watch or burn DVDs, it has a DVD±R Drive. I think this is an important feature in this price range. It does offer both bluetooth and a media card reader in addition to 4 USB drives, which should be enough for any average user.

Everything I tested ran fairly fast and generally smoothly. It does not have a lot of pre-loaded software, but users can pick and choose what they really need or use cloud apps, so that isn't a deterrent for me. This is not a great choice for a gamer or graphic designer or a hard core photographer, but otherwise, I'd recommend it.
