Even though it is an old computer (made in 2002) it is great for someone who is new to computers

-pros:

Windows Xp Pro

Wifi enabled

faster than some modern day computers

-Cons:

A bit heavy about 8 pounds

Original dosn't come with DVD drive only cd

So overall it would be great gift for someone who would want a decent laptop, just for web, and emails

It was a great computer, real fast and powerful, plus it has DVD. But I stumbled over the power chord and it fell off my coffee table. I took it apart to see if I could fix it the operation was a failure. RIP.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop (Intel Pentium 4 CPU, Blue and Silver)

My family bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 for my sister in 2003 (a decade ago), and made sure to get the best available at the time: 2.6Ghz CPU, 32MB video, 512MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, Windows XP. She loved it. She completed her Master's degree on it, took it everywhere when traveling, and even named it. But then, five years ago, she set it aside (out of necessity) for a newer Mac laptop. The Inspiron was slowing down, making a terrible rattling noise, and overheating to the point of shutting down.

So, with her blessing, I decided to clean it up and see what I could do to get it back up to speed. I upgraded the HD to 100GB, upgraded the RAM to 2x1GB (2GB total, requires a two-step BIOS upgrade), and replaced the monitor and hood. I also added an internal wireless card and a 2-USB slim PCI express card, replaced the fan and heat sink (and thermal grease), and super-glued a fine mesh screen (normally added to case fans) to the fan intake on the underside of the laptop to prevent further dust accumulation on the heat grill and CPU fan. As an added touch, I replaced the DVD drive with a second HD, and installed a temperature monitoring program, which keeps the CPU below 100F by adjusting the CPU fan speed accordingly.

All in all...? $150-$200 tops over 2 years, and it still runs like new. It's been my traveling laptop, my emergency computer when the main one goes kaput, and is the ONLY computer in the family which is still going strong after a full decade of technological updates, advances, and changes.

I love my Dell Inspiron 5100, and will keep it even after I get a new one. Excluding the fan issue, this has been a excellent laptop.

I purchased this laptop during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. I paid $498.94 after tax.

I have the model with 8GB of DDR3 memory and the Intel Core i5-3210 @ 2.5Ghz CPU.

Everything on this laptop works great with the exception of the slow hard drive @ 5400rpm. It's a great amount of space, but I want my operating system and applications to load faster, so I'll be throwing in a Solid State Drive in this thing.

Through some research I've found that this particular model typically does not have support for mSATA devices, but there is a part # from Dell that you can order for around $15 that will allow you to install a SSD without removing the primary hard disk or the CDROM drive. The part number is N7JHH (Daughterboard w/ mSATA port) from Dell. Once you've installed this part, you can install an mSATA drive to the board to host your operating system, and leave the 1TB 5400RPM drive to host your data.

If you don't like the idea of buying the daughterboard from DELL and installing it, you can also buy a "2nd HDD Caddy" or a new "Disk Bay Adapter" for the laptop, which just replaces the CD-ROM drive with a SATA drive (its okay, you can use an external cdrom drive or just use USB drives for everything). A good place to look is newmodeus.com

I love how all of the USB ports are now 3.0 and it has the 3rd Gen Intel Chip w/ graphics.

I dislike how the power port and RJ45 now on the sides instead of the back like in the older models, but its a minor flaw.

I've had this laptop since Christmas of last year, and I really like it, but, it can be a bit slow at times, plus it takes me about about 10 minutes to get it into a useable state after already logging on, that may be just me, but I think it has something to do with the laptop.

Pros:

Good for students

relatively small

not windows 8 ;)

Cons:

a bit slow

pretty bad display

low battery life

loaded with useless dell media drivers that slow it down further

I'd recommend it if your on a budget, other than that... no.

I started having touchpad issues shortly after purchasing this and should have just gotten a refund but the dell service people said they could fix it. They reset something and it didn't help the problem. When I called back they kept saying they had resolved it and kept transferring me to three people in india to tell my story again and again and they only they had the same reply again and again. They had resolved it last time yet they wanted to charge me to do the same procedure again that didn't work the first time. They kept me on the phone for 45 mintues without even addressing the touchpad issue just that I had called before on the issue and it had been "resolved" which it hadn't. So essentially they offered no help and insinuated I was a liar and ultimately they hung up on me or got disconnected and never called me back despite taking my phone number down in case we got disconnected. I will never buy a Dell again, what a horrible company. I miss my acer laptop.

DON'T BUY A DELL. THEIR CUSTOMERS SERVICE WILL SHAVE YEARS OFF IN YOUR LIFE IN TERMS OF STRESS.

I bought this refurbished about a month ago, and it's a great computer for the money. The external side of the lid was scratched a bit, but the inside of the laptop looked like it had never been used. So far I'm not a big fan of the Windows 8 operating system, but I have no complaints about the computer itself.

The first set of 2 computers were returned at my cost as verified defective, then the second 2 had the typical worn out hinges. Still waiting for a refund, still shipped at my cost. How they are still active on Amazon is amazing to me. these were not purchased as used units, but represented as properly serviced ready for work... Steve

amazon this notebook has a good reference, says new, on June 6 I receive in the city Medellin, Colombia, that sadness to receive the laptop is too old.

This too grating, by use and abuse, that the owner was a child of 8-12 years dragged him across the floor, over and over again, the only thing which is new is the keyboard that looks like it changed and the briefcase, where palm rest is broken.

I've bought used goods where the seller says like new and I received in perfect condition.

amazon gentlemen, this seller needs a sanction for selling things in such bad shape.

I live in Colombia, I can not return the laptop because I get very expensive,

but you must require the seller to reimburse me 50% of the value of the laptop.

amazon have very good references on the web,

because this is happening, they should improve.

If the seller says as new must have word

I ordered this laptop on Thursday and just in 1 day, it was delivered in a perfect condition. Didn't have the chance to see every feature, but I can say that I loved this PC at first sight.. Looks so solid, not like some others giving you a feeling that they will break down if you don't be very careful. Only problem for now seems to be the touch pad. I can say that its little bit sticky, hard to move the cursor precisely.. Also, left and right click buttons are really hard to press. Clicking means really clicking for this laptop !!! Don't hesitate to buy, perfect item for its price. But make sure you order a nice mice too..

Now, after using the PC for a few days, I m happy to see that the touch pad buttons are getting easier to press. Finger print reader and Hp Simple Pass application that allows you to use your fingerprint instead of entering usernames and passwords works very well. Swipe your finger once and all the websites you enrolled in fingerprint system shows up. Swipe it once more, you are logged on in seconds. No Username No Password..

I looked at many of the reviews and most complained about the amount of bloatWare on the computer and this is true. I removed many including Norton. Try AVG free for anti-virus, search google you will find it.

Also, some want just the Windows 7 OS! This is easily done by pressing the F11 key during boot up. You will then go into the Recovery console and choose the one on the left that says "Minimal Install". After you reboot the only thing on the laptop will be the Windows 7 premium (64bit) OS and I checked in device manager and everything is working!

As noted above the F11 key that kicks off the HP recovery console is a very nice feature but another is the one built into Windows 7 called "Backup" (type in Backup in the search when in Windows). Choose to create a "System Image" and have a portable USB/eSata hdd ready. You can then save the image to that drive in case of disaster. At the end of the System Image creation make sure you create the System Repair CD. The System Repair CD will be used to restore the "System Image" if you ever need to. This is very usefull after you get the laptop loaded and customized with all the software that you want.

The touch pad, don't be so quick to judge. Look in the control panel for the touchpad control and try a few different options. The all-in-one touchpad works fine for me.

Buyer Beware. I purchased a HP Pavilion laptop with a Windows 7 Professional operating system in March 2010. The hard drive crashed while the system was under warranty in September 2010. I discovered the external Seagate backup drive performed a selective backup instead of a complete backup, backing up only 18 GB out of 200 GB of data. According to one computer repair technician, many of the files were still readable on the defective HP drive. I then decided to replace the hard drive myself at my cost and reload the OS, only to learn that HP "tatoos" their drives preventing anyone from replacing the drive with anything other than the exact same drive from HP. Without the tatoo, I could not reload my operating system which came from HP. HP quoted me a price over $300 for the HP replacement "tatooed? hard drive. Identical drives without the tatoo cost approximately 1/3 the price of the HP drive. As I had already purchased a hard drive from a local "big chain" computer repair shop, I decided to obtain a new copy of Windows 7 Professional and just reload the operating system. Again, I learned that this also does not work. HP informed me that they would give me a replacement hard drive only after I gave them my original hard drive. Since I first needed a computer with the Windows 7 operating system installed to transfer the recoverable data files from the bad drive to a good drive and then to securely erase data on the the old drive, this was not an acceptable option. HP tech support failed miserably during this process since the HP technician (who had a heavy India English accent) told me that I had to go back to the computer store where I purchased the hard drive and have them fix the system. It took four weeks for me to discover that ONLY HP could fix the laptop. I did take the laptop back to the place of purchase. They experienced the same problem in attempting to get HP to fix the laptop. The computer has been broken now for seven weeks. While the HP laptop operated okay (not great, just OK) when it worked, I discovered that HP laptops are simply no longer repairable unless you bite the bullet and allow HP to make the repairs at an incredibly high price. In reviewing prior laptop purchases, I realized that ALL of my prior HP laptops had broken after a year or so and that the other brands of laptops I purchased while old and banged up from use continued to operate. It does not make sense: why would a company (HP) which brags that it is a "green" company produce disposable laptops whose users will throw them away into the dumpster when they break and when they learn they are not economical to upgrade or repair.

I just got this laptop as a gift. It looks very cool and it is very thin. I so want to keep it but the track pad is driving me crazy. It is very hard to use and it's already causing me finger pain on my second day. The cursor jumps around as I am typing on the keyboard, but when I do need to use the track pad to scroll up and down, it is half dead. Very very frustrating to use. Another thing I hate about this laptop is the monitor. The colors appear strangely purplish and it is nearly impossible to see details if the colors are light. For example, it is impossible to see a lace pattern on the screen. I went through color calibration but it didn't help. It hurts my eyes to stare at the screen.

Google is on to something here, but without a little luck, I would not have known about it. I now own 2 chrome books (one for my wife and one for me) and find the experience delightful. In trying to learn and become more productive with it, I have searched the web for how-to articles, etc. Quite by accident, I came across "The Chrome Book." It is well written, very informative, and a real good overview of the "operating system." It also treats some of the higher level uses. This was my best find yet, and one that I am buying as a reference book. I just hope Google keeps going with this concept with enhancements, improvements, and more advertising. Again, well written book and on target!

It's helping me decide if I want to take the plunge(I probably will).

After a month of owning my Chromebook, I still refer back to this book.

Honest reviews on The Chrome Book Paperback

I have experience with almost every OS out there. I purchased Andriod and iPad, looking for the perfect flexible, easy to use PC replacement. No luck. Even a Bluetooth keyboard its not enough to replace the PC as a heavy typing/real work tool.

So I purchased a Samsung 5 550. I already used Google Apps extensively, and this was a natural extension.

CH Rome's book gave me a fantastic look into the concepts and methods of using ChromeOS, as well as a detailed step-by-step method for using it. It actually changed how I use computers. My 'My Documents" folder is now my Google Drive folder and I have file access from my PC, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad, and any PC I log into.

I use the Chromebook as the heavy typing tool now, as its so fast and easy to start and stop, and stay where I was. I use a wireless mouse with it, and it feels so comfortable! I could not have known all these capabilities were there without the book. I can honestly say that less than $6 and a few hours of reading changed a huge aspect of my life. Not many books can boast that claim.

I've had this laptop for almost three years, every day, for on average 6+ hours a day.. It's had it's bumps in the road but for a heavy user such as myself to have a laptop last this long is downright impressive.

It shipped with Windows Vista, which at the time was crap, so of course I downgraded to XP right away. It ran wonderfully, and eventually I dual-booted to Win7, to which I found ran much faster. It also came with just 2GB of ram, which got upgraded to 4GB.

To give you an idea about my usage; I'm a graphic design hobbyist. I usually have Google Chrome/Mozilla Firefox open alongside Photoshop CS4 AND Paint tool SAI, while running Windows Live! and Trillian in the background with no problems. I've had it permanently connected to a Wacom Tablet for most of it's life and never once had an issue with that. It even runs some 3D graphics programs at good speeds.

For gaming, the hardware isn't the best, which knocks off one star. It can however run most MMO's on medium settings (FlyFF, Aika, Aion, etc) and WoW on high, so kudos to this little guy. Bigger, more demanding games have no hope, namely AMNESIA and The Last Remnant did not want to run on my system due to graphics card requirements.

Like mentioned above, the hardware isn't all that great. It totes a 1.44ghz processor, which isn't ideal for a gamer, and the integrated graphics card can be limiting at times. But for the price I paid for it, and the amount of time I've used it on a daily basis, the fact that it runs beautifully still makes it a great product.

I am really satisfied with this computer. I've had it for over four years, and it still runs like the first day I bought it. It even survived a totally unexpected spill a little after I got it (good thing I knew what to do with it when this happened). Of course, I've been taking really good care of it. The only issue I've had with it is overheating, but as long as I dust it out every so often and use a cooling pad, I rarely run into problems. I think I might buy a new Toshiba when I decide to replace this one.

However, I feel like I could buy a little more for what I spent for it, now. Not that it was high-priced for a computer.

Overall, it is a great computer.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5895 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz AMD Turion

To use this computer with any speed and responsiveness, I wiped Vi$ta and installed Ubuntu, on which it ran very nicely. However, the 590 Radeon X1200 drivers are "legacy" and, while they're improving for Linux, they may be nonexistent for Windows 7.

had this laptop for almost 4 years now... and almost everything is not original. i take good care of my stuff so i was surprised that i had to replace the monitor, keyboard, battery, plug port twice, and have had to get 4 hard drives. the monitor went completely black, the battery lasted 5 minutes on a full charge, the plug port stopped recognizing that it was plugged in and thus wouldn't charge... twice, and the hard drive has crashed 4 times. disappointed with this product and never buying another toshiba. not worth the time, aggravation, and money fixing this worthless computer.

Just got this laptop and I have to say I love it so far.

The only issue I do have with it, as many others have said while I was looking at reviews before buying this product, is that the trackpad does have its issues.

At times the pad is a bit too sensitive, while at others its a bit unresponsive (usually only when I'm trying to zoom in and out which isn't a big deal). The buttons on the bottom aren't very large so, if you're like me and you don't push the button on the edge or the lower corners of it, you may accidentally touch and move your mouse.

I haven't found any other issues with it and I must say I do love the speakers. Though it isn't a very high range of volume, the highest volume is at a great level and the sound quality is very good (though still not as high as the Kindle Fire HD in my opinion).

I love the length of the charger, though the only thing I'd say I don't like about the laptop (and I think this is just a new thing with the newer laptops) is that I wish it came with a backup CD, in case something happened.

Perhaps I'm old school, but it is a nice thing to have if your computer does have a problem.

I also feel it necessary to say that this is a great product for its price and I specifically chose Windows 7 because I've demoed on Windows 8 before and I can't say its my cup of tea. So it was a bonus for me to just be able to open the laptop and be able to use it right off the bat with little to no setup.

I was looking for a replacement lap top when mine crashed and three brands were recommended. Lenovo was one of them. I was searching for windows 7 and found this machine. I added 4 G of memory and so far I really like this computer. There has been one problem on which I had to spend money to fix. After about 5 or 6 days of owning the computer and it working like a champ, I suddenly started to have boot up problems where my screen would go black and never fully open. I could not figure out what was wrong, so took it to some local technical guys. They did some research and found that a "feature" of the Lenovo is something called "quick boot" or something like that. It actually interfers with the opening of windows and has to be disabled in order for the computer to properly boot up. It cost me a couple of hours of technical time, and a full day to drive back and forth, and wait for the machine to get fixed. I wish that this was something I knew about in advance. Other than the glare on the monitor, I would recommend this machine.

latest generation i7, fast and zippy, and leads to longer battery power per charge over previous generations.

great for college use with light gaming.

-keyboard with island keypad is a plus.

-lenovo warranty process is also very easy.

-has usb 3.0 and hdmi

you might want to upgrade to more ram though as 4gb isn't very much, and possibly an SSD.

other then that, for the price I paid, I think it was an excellent deal.

With the kids all grown and having their own laptops, I decided it was time to get my own. During the black friday sale I stumbled across this laptop. It was perfect for what I wanted. The color is beautiful(Glossy Brown) as well as a keyboard which is so comfortably laid out that I glide across. Windows 8 may be difficult for those accustomed to Windows 7 but to me this is an perfect operating system. The Start screen layout is both stylish and user friendly, I'm learning pretty fast. You can view mail, share pics, and talk to friends with the click of a button. For those who are accustom to windows 7's desktop, you can easily click to the desktop from the start screen and do everything that you normally do. Even though it doesn't have an start button, the start screen is much faster and easier to use.

Overall, this laptop is great, boots up quickly (30 seconds) and I fully recommend it!

I am learning to love the windows 8 and having the touch screen is fun. I had an older acer and was quite happy with it and for the price of this one could not pass it up. Was worried at first about the windows 8 but playing around with it and discovering how it all works is really fun and easy. Different for sure but in a good way. Loving the back lit keyboard! Having trouble getting my old office program on it though, still trying to figure that out, it only gives the option to load the Office 2010 and I have an older version that it is not recognizing. There is supposed to be a way to get it on but have not figured that out yet. I love the light weight, sleek design with the larger screen than my others were. Not happy about the battery life. It claims to get 4-5 hrs on the battery but I have not been able to get more than 2. This is disappointing because one of the selling points for me was the longer battery life which it does not have! Other than that overall I am very pleased with this computer, the price is great for what you get. I added more memory to bring it to 8GB and response is really good, fast and touch is instant. Got the last one available before they discontinued it and got a great sale price, $200 cheaper than the upgraded version, so very happy about that. So other than the 2 hr battery life, I am very happy with this laptop and would recommended it.

The bad is that 1: you will be on one page, and another page, from another app, just flies open on top of it, or knocks you out of what you were doing entirely. This happens constantly, and I've read the same thing from other reviewers. But does this have something to do with Windows 8, or is it the computer, I don't know. I read you can do "command" plus "tab" to get the page back. I am, however, beginning to think, from reading other reviews, that this flipping around of pages is due to your wrists hitting the touchpad. 2: Another big problem for me, which is extremely annoying, but that I'm beginning to think might also be caused by wrists hitting the touchpad, is that the cursor constantly flies to the left, about the length of 8 characters, while I'm typing. And not only does it fly to the left, but when I'm typing into a field, it will fly to another field entirely. 3: The backspace key, which you need to delete with, barely works. In fact, the Comcast guy, who came to my house, said he'd return the computer for that reason alone. 4: The computer does not hold the wifi internet connection. It was constantly bumping me out of the internet to the point where this computer was useless to me. Comcast told me I needed to buy a new wireless router, which I did. But I now realize, from reading reviews on other sites, that this is a common problem with this computer; so, the wireless router had nothing whatsoever to do with it. Strangely, however, I solved this problem, by going into "settings" and clicking on my next door neighbor's name. Now I'm always connected to the internet through his connection! Like I said, I know nothing about computers, so don't ask me to explain that (nor could Comcast). 5: The audio, though quite loud compared to my ASUS, has a kind of lousy tinny sound. So, though I could not hear my ASUS without using headphones, the ASUS had beautiful sound quality, just the opposite of this, go figure. Now the good. 1: Quite fast 2: backlit keyboard really nice 3: Easy to type on, and I THINK I just solved the problem of the flying cursor, by keeping my wrists elevated. 4: sleek, attractive, light weight design. To end, due to the fast speed of the thing, I would say, yes, I'd recommend this. I actually do like it.

This laptop is for the most part good. The screen switching issue really is annoying you will be on one screen and another one flies open, happens almost all the time I know a few other people with the same laptop from work and the same thing happens to them. The picture is good and the sound is ok. If anyone knows how to fix the screen issue please let me know. I would defiantly recommend spending a little more money for a better system!!!

I purchased this laptop after a long deliberation surrounding make, model and features; this piece has everything and more for a laptop under $1000.00. The last laptop I owned was a Toshiba and it lasted me for 6 years. This i5 "Sandy Bridge" is quick and responsive to my multi-tasking needs. I just upgraded my desktop with the same series of processor and I couldn't be more pleased. The P755 has a great graphics card and built in USB3 port. The Harmon/Kardon speakers are a big improvement and provide very nice sound for a laptop. Overall, if you are considering a quality laptop that is going to give you a big bang for your buck, while sticking with a leading name in the notebook industry, you need to really consider the P755-S5270.

The laptop delivers an awesome performance. Its great Nvidia video card lets you play every game availabe. The second generation Intel Core i5 runs with a score of 6.9 and its ram memory at 1333 MHz runs with a score of 7.1 (on a 7.9 basis). Great laptop, a great machine which replaces the A660 series that were great as well. Recomended.

Short review, hello everyone!

This laptop is fantastic. Knowing quite a bit about computers, buying laptops is pretty hard for me because they can get quite expensive sometimes. This particular laptop is perfect in price and I would expect something like this to be in the 900-1100$ range for what is provided in it. This laptop has the new series i5 cpu and I can get around 3.0 GHz at full performance. In comparison, with the GT540M graphics card I can run Oblivion at ultra performance with everything on including 4X Anti-Aliasing. However, this laptop can get quite hot, I highly recommend a cooling pad. It is extremely fast and does everything more than I expected.

Another happy customer, great pricing and shipping from Amazon.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite P755-S5270 15.6-Inch LED Laptop (Black)

I have had it about a month. No real issues so far. Performing very well in all the applications I have tried.

Before buying:

Before purchasing I did some research on the web and I did a lot of comparing on processors and graphics processors on the Passmark Software CPU benchmarking website. I knew I wanted a Sandy Bridge processor so the 2410M looked like it. I also wanted to get the best GPU I could or at least something better than the Intel on board graphics. I wasn't as concerned about hard drive size or RAM since they are expandable later. I wanted teh 15.6" screen vs a 17" or smaller 13"/14". I did not consider any HP models due to past bad experience with a laptop and the reviews I have seen of some of their laptops and desktops lately. I looked at Dell and the pricing to get the specific components I wanted was a little higher. Not all Dells were built equally I could see. The ones on their website had better components than the ones on Amazon or other sites at the same price level. I had considered some Asus models due to the pricing but ultimately went with Toshiba due to their reputation and reviews.

Good:

Its doing everything I have wanted it to do without any issues. No overheating issues and the fan is pretty quite when it does kick on. MS Office 2007 is loaded and works well. No lag or bogging down with it. I have World of Warcraft running with all of the graphics settings on high or ultimate with no issues. That is the only time it really heats up. I like the USB 3.0 plug. I uploaded from my external backup hard drive in minutes what would have taken hours on my old PC with a USB 1.0.

Could be better:

I have hooked the HDMI up to our 52" Panasonic but was disappointed in the graphics quality both for movies and games. I had to turn the graphics settings way down on WoW to get it to run smoothly. The Geforce GPU doesn't seem to be able to drive the bigger screen. Don't get me wrong it does great on the laptop screen just don't expect to run a large screen at the same quality.

I did have some trouble loading some older software but that was due to Windows 7. I would have that trouble with any PC running Win 7.

The placement of the USB, power, and audio plugs interferes with the DVD drive and using an external mouse. I wish some of the plugs were on the back but looking at how it appears to be laid out internally I can understand why they are on the sides towards the front.

My biggest grief with the purchase is that a week later I saw the 17" version with an i7 sandy bridge (I think it was the 2510M) for less at an office supply store. Amazon now has this PC for much less than I paid. Such is the way of PC prices though.

Overall very happy with the purchase and would recommend this laptop and Toshibas in general to anyone buying a new laptop.

After three weeks of owning this laptop I have nothing but great things to say. My initial experience has been incredible. The second generation i5 has been able to handle anything that I've thrown at it. Battery life is optimal for 5+ hours. All of the games I've thrown at it have been played at 45+ fps on high settings and with DX11 enabled. Needless to say, I love, love love this laptop!

I bought a 12-inch Powerbook after I gave my old Sony Vaio notebook the Pete Townshend treatment I put my fist through it. (Yes, it looks like a stained glass window.) I hadn't used a Mac in years, but I decided I'd had it with Microsoft and Windows. All it took was one weekend and a good book "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual," by David Pogue -

however, and I mastered the machine.

SOFTWARE

The computer comes with some great software. iTunes is the best media player on the market. I have almost 5,000 songs stored on mine. With the search function and browser display, it is easy to find a particular song. iTunes also keeps track of the number of times you've listened to a song and it allows you to rate your songs. It's easy to create a playlist. Also, burning one of those playlists onto a CD can be done with one click.

Safari is a great web browser. It has a Google search box built into the toolbar, prevents pop-up ads (I've never had one), has tabbed browsing (preventing a cluttered desktop), and allows for bookmarks to be added with one click.

iChat allows Mac users to customize their AIM and Rendezvous chat sessions in ways that the normal applications don't allow, such as adding pictures from iPhoto to their profile.

I haven't mastered iPhoto yet, but it is downloading pictures from a digital camera is as easy as plugging it into the USB port and clicking a button.

Also, Macs are less likely to get a virus or be overtaken by spyware.

The iCal and Address Book look good, but if you are going to sync a PDA with your Mac, you are better off using Palm Desktop software. Hopefully the functionality of those programs will be improved in the future though.

Finally, most of the programs work with each other. For example, if someone on my iChat buddy list is online, a green dot will appear next to a message from him or her in my Mail inbox.

I also use Microsoft Office, Quicken, Dreamweaver MX, and Palm Desktop they all work well on the Mac. Office shares files perfectly with PCs.

HARDWARE

Spend the money and get the superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-R). DVDs have more memory than CDs and blank DVD-Rs are becoming more affordable. If you are into collecting videos of concerts, a DVD-R is a must.

I'd recommend upgrading to at least 768 MB of memory and the 80 GB hard drive. Burning a DVD requires a lot of memory and can take a while this way you can use other applications while burning a DVD (on my old PC, if I was burning a CD, I couldn't use anything else). The hard drive space is really cheap. Plus, if you load your CDs on your computer, they can eat up a lot of memory, even as MP3s (my 5,000 songs take up about 25 GB).

Also, there is a lot to be said for getting the Airport Exteme card (although you can buy a third-party base station for less). I am able to browse the Internet in any room of my house well worth the extra $100 or so.

I have the 12-inch monitor, but that was because Apple hadn't released the 15-inch in the new style when I made my purchase. The 12-inch is fine it's much clearer than my old PC notebook but if I had the opportunity, I'd probably go with the bigger monitor.

DRAWBACKS

-While most software is available for Mac OS X, there are some programs that aren't (Google toolbar, Yahoo! toolbar, Kazaa, AvantGo) or minor problems in software that is available (Quicken can't access accounts on Ameritrade via Macs)

-The PowerBook doesn't have a fan, which is great for the battery, but can cause it to get a bit hot underneath where the user rests his left hand.

Regardless of those drawbacks, however, buying a Mac was an easy decision. If you have any questions about it, click on my profile and send me a e-mail.

UPDATE: After 14 months, the hard drive started making noise and system performance got slow and I couldn't run as many programs as I used to. I called Apple and had to spend $300 for them to put in a new hard drive and some other hardware. They were unable to transfer my data to my new hard drive, so I've spent the past four days reloading all of my software and applications. No idea why the hard drive went. Hence I dropped the rating from five stars to four.

I recently bought an apple powerbook laptop 12",that was listed as used but in very good condition.I was concerned about making a purchase like this from an unknown seller that seemed to be new to the site-but I trusted the Amazon site. The price was really good and the description impressive;so although I knew very little about the item I decided to risk it.I had been using a dell for about 4 or 5 years;the last 2 or 3 of which were computer hell. And I had been vowing to next time get a mac since I heard they were less aggravating in regards to things like freezing up for no reason, bogus error messages that I couldn't possibly understand,e-mail that wouldn't open for 5 minutes & then didn't like to receive or send mail some days,15minute boot-ups,and web pages(when I finally got on) that got stuck when I tried to scroll.Well, needless to say I am ecstatic! Everything actually does what you tell it to and almost instantaneously.I have made the adjustments without all that much hassle.Thought I might mind the smaller screen but not at all.Within the first week-I had done mail, gone on the internet, installed my mouse, the font I wanted, had it reading stuff for me,installed games, have it tell me the time etc etc etc.It is that user friendly. There is just too much to love about it to even list.I would NEVER go back to any other pc again!I am in computer heaven!

I am blown away at the professionalism of this seller!!! They were wonderful to me!!! I have not been a Mac user and was a bit of a pain in the neck I am afraid. I was treated as I would have never imagined possible. I had to cancel my first order to upgrade after I already ordered. No problem.I received a very nice email instead of attitude. It made me want to find something they had for sale. It has been so refreshing to be put before the almighty dollar.

I STRONGLY recommend buying from these guys!!! I would pay more to buy from these people if necessary, but that is not the case!! Their prices were also the best!!!

I am 100% satisfied and know that you will be too!!!!

Honest reviews on Apple PowerBook Laptop 12.1" M9007LL/A (1.0-GHz PowerPC G4, 256 MB

A fantastic ultra portable laptop. I bought the 12" Powerbook G4 1Ghz, and have been blown away by it. It has a good metallic design and its size is very easy to carry around, this is the major disadvantage of larger bulkier notebooks. I have had mine upgraded to 1.25 GB Ram, and the performance of applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop is great. You can even play games like Halo on it pretty well, if that is your thing. You can have up to 80GB of HD, and my advice is to buy the largest you can afford. I also have an Airport (802.11g) card installed, and it allows wireless connectivity with a pretty good range. In addition, Bluetooth built-in allowed me to use a very nice wireless mouse with it. The Keyboard is of good quality, an important feature if you have to write long documents in Word! The LCD screen is of good quality too. All in all it made a pleasant switch from my previous bulky Sony Vaio Lap. I would recommend this computer very highly.

This is the computer that turned me onto apple products. It is sincerely the best computer I have ever used, and I regret not taking better care of it. Even the newer macbooks don't hold up to this little guy. I rarely have any problems, and it's going on 7 years! It's been through so many drops, spills, and accidents, I'm amazed it keeps going. The screen is literally falling off, I've gone through three chargers and two batteries, and half the keys are missing and it still starts up faster and crashes less than my new macbook pro! It's a great, hardy little computer.

I am a chronic researcher,as such, I began researching the best PC laptop systems available around February 2011. I use my laptop constantly as I am a telecommuting freelance writer. I searched for the best laptop system that could handle my projects and regularly used software programs. I admit that I am somewhat biased when it comes to Dell. Prior to the Dell 15R, I owned 4 laptops 3 of which were Dell Inspirons. I also own a Dell Desktop. I am a fan of Dell. That being said I was delighted when I found this Dell listed among the best laptops. I purchased it in April 2011 and have had no problems with it at all. It's an extremely powerful laptop while still remaining exceptionally user friendly and fast. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone in the market for a reliable, awesome PC.

I received this Dell lappy via Buybooksnow on amazon for $602. Great value in that it has the Sandy Bridge I5 processor in it and it has 2 USB 3.0s as well(which I did not see listed in the specs). Anyhow, it came with only one of the memory slots filled so it was very easy to upgrade to 6 or 8gb of RAM. It is lightening quick and does everything I need. The only thing holding this computer back is the integrated graphics, but you are not going to get a computer like that for 6 hundred bucks. Time will tell, but this looks like one of the best deals I have ever gotten on Amazon.

This is not a computer for everyone. Freezes all the time and it is slow. I don't like it at all. I waited to long to try it out. I've wasted my money. Lesson learned. I read all reviews. I guess I should have waited and looked more. Barely surfs the net forget playing any games at all. The freezing is driving me crazy. It is so bad I've never written a review before and felt compelled to do so.

This computer was totally NOT worth the money I spent. Within six months the internal mouse broke and it ran so hot that I thought it might catch fire. The final straw was at its 13th month when the screen cracked. Do NOT purchase this computer. And I have something to say about the vendor, Sunshine. When I called Dell because it was still under warranty they would not fix it because they said it had not purchased been purchased from Sunshine -sound fishy to you because it does to me! I'm tired of dealing with this and will be purchasing another laptop (NOT A DELL and not from Sunshine) from a reputable source. Please note that I got NO response from Sunshine whatsoever! Buyer Beware! ALSO IF THERE WAS A WAY TO PUT A NEGATIVE STAR IN THE FIVE STAR RATING SYSTEM I WOULD RATE IT AS NEGATIVE!!!!!
