Acer Aspire AS7741Z-4643 17.3" Notebook PC Review

I've owned this laptop since May 2011 and to me it's the only model under 500 bucks worth buying for one reason: you get a 17" screen with a nice 1600x900 resolution. Almost every other laptop in the price range is 15"+ with that awful 1366x768 res which feels like you're workihg on a postage stamp. Please don't expect this laptop to be a workhorse speedster, it won't happen at this price. But when I was searching, I was after a big screen with real estate for under 500, and you get that with this Acer.

But I was also surpised that this Acer has an acceptable amount of performance. I do a lot of photo and video editing on my desktop PC with Photoshop and Premiere so I'm used to an i7-980 6-core processor with 24Gb ram. But when on the road on business trips I also take my camera and therefore I wanted SOME sort of photo editor on this laptop. I bought Adobe Lightroom and to my surprise, it runs quite well! Granted, I did upgrade to 6GB of ram (pulled the 1GB stick and put in a 4GB next to the existing 2GB stick) which helps, but as a measure of performance this inexpensive Acer pulls it off decently. So does Photoshop Elements, I downloaded the trial and it runs just fine. I realize that not everyone reading this may use Lightroom or PS Elements, but it's a way to portray what this laptop can handle, as opposed to just saying "yeah, it's speedy"... compared to what? lol! It's quite acceptable, seriously. I also run Microsoft Office 2010, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 on it! Those are software development tools, but it basically means that this Acer can do the job, just get enough ram, the 4gb stick is under 40 bucks.

CONS: Not many, this is a lot of laptop for under $500, but there has to be downsides, and to me there are just a couple: The trackpad is annoying to work with. I'm not a trackpad fan anyway, I just plug in a mouse and turn off the trackpad. But if you're stuck where you have to use the pad, the static from your hands will DEFINITELY cause the cursor to jump to another section if the page (or another field in a webpage) while you're typing. I use this Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse and disable the trackpad. problem solved. Also, the laptop's exterior plastic shell on the screen side of the unit bends in easily, meaning, if the laptop is closed and on your desk, don't set anything heavy on the closed laptop (like a heavy hardcover book), the case will sink in! Other than that, this is a fine laptop with a nice big screen. The graohics are built-in, not a separate beefy card, so while you can watch DVDs on here with ease, huge video like the 1080p footage out of my Canon 5D Mark II will not run, it just grinds to a halt. This isn't a gamer laptop for one for video editing, but for everyday tasks and photo editing it's quite good. The only thing I wish it had was an Expresscard port or even PCMCIA, but it has neither. But for the price it's a superb entry-level or college student solution.

Two of the USB ports will charge but will not recognize devices. I added a powered USB hub to the working port and provides all I need. Usb port problems seem common on the model of Acer.

This is a great laptop, and perfect for all my needs. Like advertised, the laptop came practically new, and I have had absolutely no problems with it. In fact, I have ended up using it more than my desktop, which I have packed away. This has become my primary computer, and it stands the heavy use and transportation very well. The battery is not very good, and it's a little heavy for my slight frame, but the speed is good, the memory excellent, and it runs like clockwork. I would definitely recommend this computer.

Best Deals for Acer Aspire AS5733-6838 Laptop, Intel Core i3-380M, 2.53GHz, 4GB

Pro: Laptop was advertised as an Intel Core i3 processor but when you check the properties on the computer it shows it actually has the Intel Core i5 CPU M560 @ 2.67GHz. I think there must have been an issue with the i3 so later models of the AS5733 were upgraded serupticiously. If they advertised it as an i5 they would have had to ask for more $$ so as not to cheapen the laptops with the i5 as advertised. So it was an even better deal than expected.

Con: The only thing I find a little distracting is the keyboard keys, they are flat instead of concave like you have on a standard keyboard; takes some getting use to. However, I use my laptop connected to a Kensington universal docking station most of the time so it really doesn't affect me that much; regular desk monitor and keyboard used 90% of the time.

Tip: I pull out the battery when using the docking station or power cord so that saves the battery from being charged unnecessarily. Battery lasts much longer that way.

We bought this for our 13 year old daughter for Christmas. The seller was great to work with. The original one was delivered with a broken screen. It looked like fedex dropped it the corner of the box was smooshed in where the screen was broken and of coarse like all shippers coming to our address they leave it on the doorstep and don't even ring the doorbell so we couldn't really dispute the damage. He replaced it and reimbursed us for the return shipping. Works well but she broke an arrow key after about 2 days. Im sure that was her fault. Other than that it works about the same as any other laptop i've used. It doesnt overheat even when she is playing sims and she has it stuffed full of programs already and it hasn't seemed to slow down any.

I purchased this Laptop in August from a major retailer and paid about $275 brand new. Its a good laptop for performing basic websurfing tasks and viewing pictures and videos. Nothing special no bells and whistles and not much to shout about. At a price of $275 this is to be expected...you get what you pay for and I knew this when I bought it. However keep in mind that the RAM, even though it comes stock at 2GB, is upgradeable up to 8GB. And RAM is honestly not that expensive or difficult to upgrade and boosts your memory, speed, and performance for less than $50 if your computer savvy or know a friend who is. You can also upgrade the graphics for less than $100 depending on if you really want a gaming machine or just to view a couple videos and the occasional game now and then. You can also upgrade the processor, but I would recommend a professional repair technician to handle changing out the CPU but upgrading from the stock 1 GHz Dual Core to a triple or quad core 2.5 GHz or greater would be worth it for the power and performance you could get, but thats up to you. Depending on what you are looking for, you can upgrade this laptop for alot less than buying a top notch performance system, and get at least equivelent performance. This is why I purchased this laptop to begin with...I plan on making those upgrades in the near future. Only issue Ive had is the LCD screen got a snowy red haze that showed up against certain colors, and found out that it was the screen itself going bad. But an LCD screen costs about $60 for the part, and I got a high gloss anti-glare finish replacement screen which shows color contrast better and shows up better in high light environments...so im happy and problem solved. Its a good starting point laptop to upgrade or for a kid starting out.

I received this laptop, the disk drive did not work nor show up on the set up. I spoke to Dell 4 times to try to correct this, however they were not only rude but refused to speak to me because they stated my name was not the purchaser!! I attempted to ask if it could be because it was bought through Amazon and not directly from Dell, however they were so rude that they would not even discuss it. I am my friends and my company will never deal with Dell products again. Very bad experience!

This is by far the best laptop computer I have every used, though it does have a few flaws as we all do. This is my response after about 3 weeks of daily use.

First the PROs:

1. It is as described very light and thin. I switch from use of this computer to another frequently and the heft and size make this movement easy to do without requiring movement of everything else on my desk. I like it!

2. The speed of the i7 chip and of the two solid state "hard drives" are also as described fast to recalculate large spreadsheets and quick to load any program. I have never had this performance available to me short of some sort of mini-computer.

3. And one is spoiled by the responsiveness of the solid state flash drives.... I don't ever want to go back to the performance of what many of us remember in the 1980s as Winchester hard drives which at that time we thought were above our expectations! Programs seem as if they instantaneously load.

a. I deliberately bought a unit with two 128 Gb solid state (flash) drives. After I loaded a normal (but not "extensive") array of programs I had only about 128 Gb of flash storage available for data and other programs. I needed that second drive and I anticipate most others will as well.

4. The solid state drives provide another advantage I never shut the machine off. I just save my files and close the cover when I am through work. There are no moving parts, no heat is being generated. The programs are in the condition as left at shutdown when I restart.

5. The unit is rugged. When I open the display by lifting from the left-hand corner, there is no strain on the display or movement of the chassis.

6. The screen is bright and easy to read from most any angle associated with my use.

7. The published (CNET) concern about not having enough ports is unwarranted at least for my use. It comes with a Bluetooth connection AND very nice Logitech Bluetooth Mouse. It also comes with an HDMI port AND an adapter to connect HDMI to VGA (for my large flatscreen monitor). So there remain unused two USB3 ports and a Thunderbolt port.

8. Music sounds both very well and adequately loud through the backward pointing sound system. I think sound from laptop computers has finally become adequate!

Then the NEUTRALS:

1. The fit and finish are smooth; the unit feels solid, balanced. The chassis is of jet black anodized metal; it's not shiny. There is no special appearance factor, except that it is thin and looks just OK.

2. The published (CNET) concern about lifetime of the lift system which exposes the array of ports at the back for use appears also unwarranted. Actually, this lift is nearly always in the upward position (exposing the ports) because it also raises the computer frame to allow improved heat transfer from the chassis. In my experience, the lift is nearly always in the up position to improve heat transfer or to expose the HDMI port for use to drive my flatscreen monitor.

3. Keystrokes are solid despite the presumed short stroke length with a thin chassis. They are not "springy" or "dead."

4. The keyboard is not backlit as are some on other machines. That's the single feature I missed on this machine

Finally the NEGATIVES:

1. The thinness comes with a price. Necessarily, the power switch (located on the back left side of the frame) is very thin, and hard for me to activate with finger or thumb. This flaw stops being annoying and becomes difficult when I have to hold the power switch down for 6 to 8 seconds in order to reboot (that does happen, especially with Chrome!).

2. The keyboard is a compromise, as I suppose one would expect with a thin/lite computer with a 13.3" screen.

a. While it has all the normal set keys, some of them are hard to access. and and half size and only accessible through simultaneously pressing the blue Function key. For those who use spreadsheets, this is a drawback.

b. And for those who use a word processor or Adobe Reader, both the and keys are impaired by being half-sized sharing and respectively.

c. The good news is that there are two broad keys, that the and keys are full-size. Four function keys are unused: , , , and . However, these keys do work in other programs.

d. The normal "full-size" keys are slightly smaller than those of an Asus laptop with a 13.3" screen which is not "thin" and "light" which has no half-sized keys.

3. It's overpriced! The Decide (http://www.decide) rates it on July 3, 2013 as a 71 on a scale of 100 with values above 90 being excellent buys and below 60 being "don't buy." The price from Amazon on that date was $1,099... From about late April to late May the price from Amazon had been between $925 and $975. I got it in late May 2013 for the lower number! The thing is that one really is socked for the second 128 Gb flash drive as the same machine with one flash drive sells for $710 at the same time.

And one more aspect of this purchase. Since it was actually made from an Amazon associate firm, they are not bound (apparently) bound by Amazon's pledge to collect sales tax in Texas. That outcome saved me nearly $1000!

SUMMARY

This is a fine machine. I would buy another at a favorable price.

Best laptop I have ever owned. Thinnest, lightest laptop on the market. Uses two solid state drives in a RAID array that gives it the fastest read/write access of any laptop. Had issues getting the bluetooth mouse to work, as another reviewer pointed out, but once I fixed that it works beautifully (i deleted the existing driver, let windows install driver, now it connects automagically just fine). Long battery life, maybe 6+ hrs. So slim, light, long battery, love the aesthetics of this laptop.

I purchased an Acer 13.3 Ultrabook (i7, 256GB SSD). While the ultarbook seems to be very fast, the display awesome and the size and weight are prefect for travelling. However, I ran into a small problem with the mouse and had to go through an awful and arrogant Acer Technical support service. The product came with an Acer Blue-Tooth which was not recognized by the notebook. I tried the chat facility first. It took hours to go through the entire procedure to address the problem. The advice I got re-install the OS and loose everything you have already installed on the computer. This did not seem to be the right approach, so I tried the support number. I was told that the product warranty does not support peripheral and that I would need to pay for the phone support. After spending hours and losing my temper I was routed to a supervisor. He repeated the unbelievable claim that the warranty did not include peripheral support. He suggested that I purchase a USB mouse. It took me a while to convince him that the purchase included an Acer Bluetooth mouse as the pointing device and it should work as advertised. He finally agreed to send another mouse. The problem was resolved immediately after I received the replacement mouse. The conclusion the product may be fine but do not expect to get good warranty or other support after you purchase it.

I was hesitant to order this laptop from the beginning. I did my research and found a lot of people complaining about issues with them. I thought, well, usually there's a lot more people who've had no issues, so maybe I'll get lucky. I've also had Thinkpads at work and home for the last 6+ years with no issues.

This laptop gets two stars because when it does work it works good and it is a nice light laptop. That's where it ends though...

I ordered this laptop directly from Lenovo. When I received this laptop it was defective from factory, the speakers did not work. I called Lenovo and was told the only thing they could do for me was to send it to be repaired...or charge me a restocking fee.

I argued that there was no way i wanted to turn my laptop into a 'refurbished' laptop a day after getting it and I requested a replacement with no restocking fee. After a lof of hassling and 2 days worth of calls i was eventually granted the RMA.

A second order was placed by them for a replacement laptop (exact same specs as the original). A couple of days after placing this order the price on the laptop went down considerably. I inquired about getting a price match trough the Price Protection Program (since I had not even received my order yet). I went trough at least 4 people in Customer support over the course of 2 days, but bottom line they refused to do this.

Why have a 'price protection plan' if you're not going to honor it????

I have spoken to countless people after this and sent several emails to customer support but they have been ignored

Needless to say I am extremely annoyed at this experience. To be honest I don't even expect the refund anymore, they can keep their 200 bucks, but it really bothers me that they would treat customers this way .

Stay away from these laptops...first off quality has dropped considerably (Don't take my word for it, do a search on Thinkpad forums or Lenovo support forums and you will see issues with speakers going bad and random reboots all over the pace with these models, people going trough 3-4 of these laptops and eventually giving up). Most of all however, their customer service stinks!

After going trough 4 Thinkpads at work and home, this will be my last one! If I could get my money back and return it, I would! Thanks Lenovo!

I've had my A6025 for 3 years, adding 3 extra gigs of RAM, which makes it super fast. Nothing else. No crashes, no freezes. Very secure and practical due to the biometric fingerprint reader. Dropped it a few times, no major damage other than minor scrapes. The HDD protector kicks in disabling the reader to protect the Hard drive. Bought an HP D7V, a Sony VAIO, a Toshiba, and none could even come close to the build, features and sturdiness of this laptop.

I bought my fujitsu A6025 in 2007 so I'm not sure if this is the same model. Nevertheless, it had so many problems from the start. First, my battery died shortly after one year, and I almost always had my laptop plugged in. The only time I would unplug was to transport it from one place to another. Once the battery died, my laptop would last 7 minutes before it would automatically shut off. Secondly, it seemed to have a lot of gliches in it's system. Often times the screen would blink while I was surfing the web or using Microsoft Office. Lastly, after about 3 years, I started getting kicked off the internet frequently. It was very frustrating. The other laptops in my home were fine so I know it was this one. I finally contacted tech support and they had me download a software to prevent that. I still got kicked off for about a month after that, but eventually it stopped. Not sure why that was... But after enduring this laptop for 5 years, I'm finally getting a new one, and it's not going to be fujitsu.

Good, reliable machine. It has all the main characteristics required for normal business applications. It is very light as well.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Lenovo made two poor design decisions on this TP 430s. keyboard and SD slot. The keyboard feel and spacing are good but they moved the PrintScreen button from the top row and put it next the Ctrl button. If you programming, as this machine is designed with programmers in mind, you will hit that PrintScreen key often. Very annoying. I never had a problem with any other ThinkPads and I had many of them over the years.

The SD card does not fit flushed. I have that nagging feeling that I will lose my fast 128 GB card eventually because at least once a week the card pops out when I take my laptop out of my bag. I wish they create a sliding door for it. I use SD card as a backup of my work.

A few other gripes: the battery on this machine isn't fantastic. My old ThinkPad X301 was far more superior to this one. Also the machine creaks a lot, the right corner of the unit, at the ThinkPad logo. it creaks when I rest my palm on it or when I pick up the laptop.

Overall, this machine does not meet my expectation when all other ThinkPads did. The best ThinkPad by far is the X301. I am thinking about trading up to the Carbon X.

I brought this laptop and thought it is solid business class laptop. Totally wrong!

Until now, I already have several issues, you can check in the lenovo forum and will found many people complaining the same problems

(1) wifi card has a problem and may randomly drop the connection. I tried installing the latest firmware, drive, and they did not help!

(2) When work with battery, the computer will suddenly shut down (without any warning) when the battery level is low (~10% in my case). You loss all the work!

(3) Two of my Logitech wireless mice does not work reliably. The left-click and hold release randomly. Both mice worked in my old computers.

Once you get everything patched up, add Stardock's Start8 ($10) to compensate for Windows 8 issues, and replace the crappy wifi adapter with something like the Intel Centrino 6235 (available on Amazon for $22), you've gone from a nice laptop to a great laptop. I also added 4 Gb of RAM to mine but it really won't be necessary for a lot of people.

This laptop boots very quickly. The screen is very clear. The I5 processor should be plenty for almost anyone. If this has a weak spot, it's the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics. There is an AMD A10 version of this laptop that would be better for gaming. While the I5 is a better processor, the A10 has better graphics.

Back to the wifi adapter I couldn't get any better than 72 mbps with the stock wifi adapter. So, for $22 I ordered the Intel 6235 wifi adapter. This upped my connections to 300 mbps and added Bluetooth 4.0 as well. To replace the adapter took about 5 minutes. Asus has made it very simple to access the hard drive, memory, and the wifi adapter two screws and a slight pull forward is all it takes. Everything is accessible by removing the one panel. One last tip if you do this, download the drivers from Intel before you swap out the adapters.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my Asus K55A laptop.

I really like this computer. It didn't have lots of useless marketing stuff pre-loaded. Set up was almost effortless. Mouse pad takes a little getting used to but it works well. I'm new to Windows 8 but with a little effort became fluent with it. I would highly recommend this laptop.

This is a great laptop! I have had mine for about a year now, no problems with anything, the only bad thing is the weight of the laptop and the size of its ac adapter, but that doesn't bother me but might be a hassle to others...besides that great and i would reccomend this.

AS far as the Laptop is concern it great and works for my needs (Photography) I got two of these;.when compare to other gameing laptops Alienware and such This still holds its own. As far as the Transaction was concern it couldnt have been a worse experience if Amazon added Tammey Fey Baker to the mix along with Gomer Pyle. I first bought this laptop from an Edward Nunn on Feb 4th and it wasn't untill March the 3th that I found out that Mr. Nunn desided not to sell or ship and Amazon themselves didn't know either. So there I was never knowning if I was going to get the laptop for a month. So if Edward Nunn ever desides to sell something on Amazon run far away I just ck my emails Feb 4th to March 6th that how long it took for me to find out I wasn't going to get the product I bought. So I bought one from Douglas Decker he was a man true to his words and deeds and even when we had a Hic cup He Douglas Decker went the extra mile and shipped it UPS because the USPS wont ship something with a Lithim Battery in it......I know. So Alls well that ends well but as far as I'm concern these 3rd party trans. I'm done

Honest reviews on Dell XPS M1730 Laptop - Sapphire Blue)

This is a great computer i brought mine back in 09 or something like that, and it still works like a champ. It plays 2011 games on high graphics settings; also i do plan to give it a upgrade at the end of this year so it can last a few more years. The screen, the sound quality, the durability, and the four usb drives makes this a great computer.

One down fall is the mouse pad, i get very upset when my palm hits the pad and the computer registers that as me wanting to fire, or attack. other than that this is a good buy, a fair price for this computer as is would be 200-420. there is a refurbished one for sale, that might be an upgraded version, but if not i would not recommend it.

I rarely ever write reviews but i needed to for this one. I bought this laptop directly from Lenovo and recieved it about 3 weeks ago. I am constantly traveling and was tired of lugging my 18.5" hp wherever I went. This laptop is very light. One of the best features in this laptop is its keyboard. The keyboard is the best that i have used to date, it has no flex when typing, the keys are backlit, and they have just the right amount of resistence when pressed (also the keyboard is spillproof). The ThinkVantage suite is very nice as well, usually i would not use any software that is preinstalled by the manufacturer but it is very intuitive. Also no bloatware so when you finish setting up your computer it is actually ready to go and you do not need to remove a lot of crap applications. This computer is very fast including great startup and sleep times as well. Some people may complain about the battery not being user replaceable but you really dont need it with the new technology they put into the laptop it usually lasts me 4 to 5 hours depending on what im doing and if i need to i can get the 80% charge in 30 minutes which actually rings true to the claims. The security of this computer is very good. The fingerprint scan works even when the computer is off, you just scan your finger and it will skip the log on screen. Another noteable security feature is the camera if it does not detect human presence for you set amount of time it will automaticly lock the computer. Also worth mentioning is the screen is very very bright and makes things alot easier to see.

My only complaint is that the ctrl and FN keys are in the opposite places that they usually are its not a big deal but you do have to get used to it if you use lots of shortcuts like myself.

The best part about this laptop by far is the support. I found 2 dead pixels near the edge of the screen so i called lenovo and within 3 button clicks i actually had a real person and there was no wait time at all.(thinkpads have seperate support from the other lines of laptops) The support is in atlanta so you can actually understand what they say and in less than 10 minutes everything was done. they are sending me a prepayed box and they also let me defer my shipment by 2 weeks because of work. This is the best support i have ever had from any company by far. Very kind and polite operators. lenovo ThinkPad will recieve all of my future laptop purchases (i am comparing the products and services to that of Dell, HP, and Sony with which i have expierience with).

I highly recommend this laptop. You won't be dissapointed with this or the ThinkPad support.

I ordered this laptop after I returned an S-Series Vaio that had a mechanical failure. The service Sony offered to repair and replace it was underwhelming, and the S-Series laptop had horrible speakers that were not powerful enough to allow one to clearly hear the audio for online videos.

I was looking for something for my work and home use light, portable, able to to take some abuse as it is carried back and forth. The X1 Think Pad is a great laptop super thin, great keyboard, tough body, and comes with Windows 7 without a lot of extra software installed.

My only criticisms of this laptop are -

1) speakers are loud enough, but not great audio quality they are close to the best you will find in laptop of this size, but that isn't saying much.

2) I use the microphone for dictation I've found some issues with voice clarity for my transcriptionists more than with other laptops I've used.

3) The mouse buttons are built into the cursor pad, and I wish they were separate for some reason this appears to be an issue when I wish to scroll down on a webpage it's more difficult to compress and hold the hidden mouse buttons than with most other laptops.

I like that this is a business laptop The S-Series Vaio looked like it was suited for a high school or college student, not a professional. The X1's Thinkpad logo w/ Red dot is a little uncool, but overall I like the feel of it. I anticipate that this machine will take what I throw at it. The quick charging battery is a great feature, as is the gorilla glass screen my toddler hasn't destroyed it yet, but certainly has tried.

I just received my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 and I'm in absolute awe with this system. Its look & feel has been attracting comments from all that see me working with it. I'm amazed with the quality construction, the level of detail and the design. This is definetely the new look for the ThinkPad brand. I personally love the keyboard with its soft keys and the glass, with extended view and clear picture. Wow! I love this system.

My Son bought one, then my wife, and now me.

This is one of the most solid feeling machines I have felt in a long time. Much better build quality than just about any other laptop I've seen.
