I recently made the switch from PC to Mac, and I can say that I'm not sure why I waited so long. Considering that I have only had my computer a few weeks I can't say much about the durability and longevity of the hardware, but I can say that the operating system (mine shipped with Lion) and software is top notch.

I labored for a long time trying to decide whether the 13" MacBook Pro (MBP) or MacBook Air was the right choice for me. I liked the form factor, screen resolution and weight of the Air, but couldn't get comfortable with the comparatively small hard drive and the RAM fixed at 4GB. Considering these factors along with the significant price premium for an Air, I decided that the MBP was right for me.

I also thought long and hard about whether to go with the base model with the 2.4Ghz i5 processor and 500 GB HDD or the 2.8Ghz i7 processor with the 750GB HDD. after looking at reviews and benchmark tests I decided that for my uses, the less expensive model would be perfect and that the incremental added performance of the more expensive model is not worth the additional cost. When large solid state drives become more affordable I will probably switch my HDD out, but until then 500GB should provide plenty of storage.

I opted to get my computer locally, but purchased the Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 Memory Module (CT2KIT51264BC1339) from Amazon for a great price. Once I got my computer home I installed the RAM in 10 minutes, start to finish. If you are planning this upgrade just be sure that you have the right Phillips head screwdriver.

After using this computer for the past few weeks and carrying it on weekly business trips I am very pleased with my choice of computers. It handles the Microsoft office suite flawlessly, and the added ram allows me to open and view very large pdf files without any lag. I have done minor video and photo editing on this computer and it performed very well. The added weight compared to the

Air hasn't proven to be too noticeable, but I am a big guy at 6'4" and 210 pounds.

So far I am pleased with this computer and my Mac experience overall. The process of learning a new OS and overall user interface was daunting at first, but Apple has done a great job creating a system that is intuitive and easy to learn.

I would recommend this computer to anyone looking for a new laptop that they expect to have for awhile and would like to be able to customize to fit their needs.

UPDATE 5/29/12: I have been using my MBP for six months now and couldn't be happier with it. I may have been lucky enough to get a great unit, but during the time that I have owned my MBP I have NEVER needed to contact technical support. I use my Mac for my primary business computer every day and have traveled extensively with it.

Aside from its performance and reliability the feature that I like most about my Mac is the multi-touch trackpad. By using gestures on the trackpad I can be very efficient, and I'm not sure that I will ever be able to go back to a regular mouse or trackball.

One addition that I made was to get the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter MB570Z/A to attach a second monitor when I'm at the office. This allows me to use both my MBP monitor and an external, which provides me with much more area when using Excel or other programs and also allows me to keep my mailbox visible when working on other things.

Considering how pleased I am with my Mac, I have a feeling that I will be buying a lot more Apple products in the future.

The reviews here are for the MD313LL/A, yet the computer is actually MD314LL/A, which has a faster processor and bigger hard drive.

The MD314LL/A features a 2.8 GHz i7 processor, integrated Intel 3000 graphics and a 750 GB hard drive. I've never owned an Apple laptop before, so there was a little bit of a learning curve. Now that I'm getting the hang of it, I'm beginning to like OSX Lion better than Windows. Programs can be run on separate virtual desktops, and the computer never misses a beat when several programs are active. Switching between different desktops or open programs can be done by merely sliding three fingers forward on the large touchpad. Control-clicking on words or phrases in Safari brings up a context sensitive menu which allows the user to select to view a dictionary, Wikipedia, or do a Google search in a pop-up window in the browser. You can also ask the computer to speak the word or phrase, if you have any doubts about pronunciation. Safari also includes links to a library of plug-ins at extensions.apple.com, which includes a plug-in for Flash, so you can now watch free Hulu videos and other videos online. The network preferences window makes it far easier than Windows to set up a list of public DNS servers to bypass the sometimes slow, glitchy ISP servers.

This computer is completely silent. I wasn't even sure it had a cooling fan until I downloaded a utility to monitor the fan speed. This computer is super fast, and the base plate never gets more than lukewarm. The light weight, small footprint, lighted keyboard, crisp screen and speed really make this computer shine.

The attention to detail is really outstanding. The cooling vents on the back of the base are completely covered by a sliding plate when the lid is closed, keeping dust out of the innards. The power supply has flip out legs for winding the cord for storage and the prongs can be removed so it can be used as a brick type supply with the supplied AC cord. The computer also has a green LED battery status gauge built into the left side of the base, which is activated by a flush button. The lid snaps shut quietly even though there are no cheesy stick-on rubber bumpers, and it is held closed by magnets. The built in light sensor shuts off the keyboard backlighting and brightens the display in bright ambient light. The computer also has a 3 axis accelerometer to protect the hard drive from damage. The attention to detail is why Macs are more expensive than the various PC clones.

Packaging:

Very impressed with the packaging. I was very impressed how well this thing was packaged. A well thought-out design protects the content and minimizes customer dissatisfaction.

First impression:

I am sure everyone who are interested to buy this product, has gone to best buy and played with it a bit. well, the new MBP right out of the box is 90% more impressive and attractive than that of the store. It is a good looking piece of machine.

It came with a charger, extension cord for the charger, instruction book, screen wipe, and nothing more that I needed. I took the cord out, and started charging it. A full charging is highly recommended before use. after a few setup screens, I am up and running.

Upgrade time:(Make sure you shut down your machine first)

I ordered this machine with a 8GB memory upgrade (DDR3-1333) from Crucial. I did not want to pay a premium for the apple upgrade. Instead, I bought a dual channel kit separately for $39.00. I highly recommended Crucial brand as they use Samsung memory chips and for one more reason I am telling you next. I will not go through how to change the memory(a lot of youtube videos available). when I took out the existing memory out of the MBP, guess what chips they use on the memory sticks? yes, guessed it right, samsung.And I also have reasons to believe that the RAMs are OEM version of crucial memory judging by physical similarities. but, that is just my opinion, not a fact.

User Experience:

After the upgrade, turned on the machine and few beeps and clunks later, it started flying. I repeat, it is flying and my machine is currently running over 600 threads without any sign of slowing down. virtual box? NO PROBLEMO! this little beauty is a little beast in performance. I have installed over 50 applications, running dozens simultaneously, 10 more browser windows open, and it just happy. I can't say enough about the multi-touch gestures. No other laptop I have ever used that had such ease of switching between applications, scrolling, searching, sliding and navigating. I have never used Mac OS before(not more than a few minutes of playing around at best buy), and I felt it was very intuitive to use and learned fairly quickly. I still don't know a lot about the OS, but it has not stopped me from doing what I need to do.

What could be better:

Not that I cared much, but the standard power cord is a little short. I bought a sleeve to keep it safe, and it does not allow room for the extension cord that comes with it(big and bulky).

It has good speakers that play nice sounding beats. But the 15" plays them better.

The outer shell is aluminium, but don't think you can't scratch it. I spent a sleepless night just cause it put a small scratch under it by accident. But, I am over it now.

Advice to the people who wants to take the plunge:

I felt like it was the best $1100 I spent on a laptop. I could not justify it before using it as I always thought that Mac is more style than performance and usefulness. I admit that I was wrong. This machine offers more features and performance per dollar than I thought. This is a well-built machine that would serve me longer than any other laptop ever has for me. I have half a dozen windows machines in my house including a 990X extreme desktop that I built 4 months ago. I love windows, but I have learned that I can like both (Macbook pro and PC).

In 1997 an ad was run with actor Richard Dreyfuss reading the voiceover, which began with: "Here's to the Crazy Ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently." Think Different... that was the 1997 slogan and theme for Apple's comeback to the world of serious computing after the return of Steve Jobs, and perhaps it was a cynical reference to IBM's famous "Think" slogan. Whatever it was, this was the ad campaign that restored Apple's reputation under the leadership of the late Steve Jobs.

Take this MacBook Pro review as one from a dedicated Windows PC user who made the switch awhile ago, with time enough to put it through its paces, to do side-by-side comparisons. I've owned a Mac before, back in the day of the Macintosh SE, and though I found it to be extremely useful for desktop publishing in the days when Aldus PageMaker reigned supreme in that area, I saw things blend as Microsoft slowly got its act together, for the most part. When it came time to upgrade back then, I stuck with the Windows PCs... until recently, when I found the need to diversify a bit.

To make this easy for those who just want to get to the facts quickly, I'll list the positive and negative points that I've personally found with the MacBook Pro first, then elaborate with details a bit further on. Please also remember that these are coming from a satisfied Windows 7 PC user, and one with multiple computers.

MacBook Pro Positives:

* Well thought-out packaging, easy out of the box setup

* Excellent build quality, unparalleled detail in workmanship

* Superb aluminum unibody chassis construction, has a good solid feel

* Sharp 13.3-Inch backlit display, first-rate 1280-by-800 Resolution

* Screen display has excellent color resolution and contrast for photos

* First class backlit keyboard, easy to use in low-light situations

* Very fast boot up even with password protection enabled

* Proven Mac OS X operating system; based on UNIX (like a server)

* Built-in SD card slot; great for transferring photos to computer

* Responsive ergonomic multi-touch trackpad; no buttons, excellent cursor control

* Well-engineered 60W power adapter with decent cable management system

* Automated incremental backups with Time Machine, works with almost any external HDD

In Between:

* Claimed 7 hour battery life; 5-6 hours is more like it, depending on the apps that you're running

Negatives:

* No built-in HDMI or VGA output, adapters must be purchased separately

* Only 2 USB 2.0 ports, and they are too close together

The Details:

We each have our reasons for the computers that we own. Mine were primarily to have a compact yet sturdy platform for word processing, accessing the Internet, and digital photo processing. That stated, there's little to not like about this MacBook Pro. The Intel Dual-Core Processor is fast and efficient, and even better than the Pentium Dual-Core 2.20GHz processor on my Windows 7 notebook PC. It's one thing to see it in the store, but when one gets it home and takes it out of the well-designed box, it's apparent that this is a better grade computer than might have been anticipated. The first thing that is noticed once it's unwrapped is the workmanship. The unibody main enclosure, constructed from a single block of aluminum, is proof of this attention to detail and it helps add to its durability.

The 13-inch backlit LCD display is sharp, and has the excellent color resolution and contrast that I need, especially when working with photos. The glossy screen actually helps to see images with their full clarity. Using both Adobe software apps and Nikon Capture NX 2, having clear and sharp resolution is an absolute necessity, and this MacBook Pro offers that. The backlit keyboard is a pleasure to use, and quite functional in low-light mobile locations. I'm also very impressed with the quick boot up, even with the password startup screen enabled, a security necessity when at some mobile locations.

It's hard to fault OS X in any way. This operating system is UNIX-based, and therein lays its strength, along with its ability to run 64-bit applications. It works right out of the box without fiddling or tweaking. It's far better than Mac OS 9 and its predecessors, and the security while on the `Net is reassuring.

The tiny built-in SD card slot has proven itself to be good for transferring photos from the digital cameras to the computer. I've also used it to transfer other media files and documents between computers in a pinch. It took awhile to get used to the trackpad, with its so-called "multi-touch gestures," but once mastered it's easy to use. Must admit that I do revert to using a mouse when using the computer at home... call it years of conditioning.

This computer really shines with the inclusion of the Time Machine application, and I was happy to find that I could use a reasonable priced off-the-shelf hard drive to do automated incremental backups. I have a Toshiba 500 GB USB Portable Hard Drive, and all I did was reformat it to HFS+ Journaled file system to use the Time Machine backup software. It works like a champ.

The external 60W power adapter is well engineered and keeps my computer running cooler than PC notebooks with internal power supplies. I appreciate the magnetic DC connector as it pops off easily if some klutz trips on the cord, necessitating a costly repair as I found out when someone did that to one of my PC notebooks. The LED in the connector head helps: amber it's charging, green it's charged; very simple and effective.

Other Notes:

The battery life being less than advertised I can live with. I would have expected HDMI and/or VGA output to be built-ins with a computer of this quality. But I have yet to buy the adapters. But to have only two built-in USB 2.0 ports is irritating, and those are too close together. Problem solved with an external 4-port ISB adapter, so that issue is closed.

I have had issues with laptop carrying bags in the past, and now carry my MacBook Pro in a ThinkTank Artificial Intelligence 15 V. 2.0 Laptop Bag. I picked this one over many others from heavy experience with photo gear, and know that Think Tank makes exceptionally good pro gear. It protects my computer from the elements quite well, holds more gear than I can explain here (I have reviewed it), and can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to protect their MacBook with the kind of case that it really deserves.

Browser note: I've used the included Safari browser, but my de-facto standard remains Google Chrome. Safari is a decent browser, but because I find it necessary to synchronize my email on the Mac, the PCs and even one older Linux-based notebook (it's a geek/support thing), Chromes just works better, and I find it faster. Your experiences may differ, so try whichever works for you.

I'm running Office for Mac 2011 and have found its interface to be even better than Microsoft Office 2010 or 2007 on the PC. Didn't know if the implementation of Outlook for Mac 2011 would be better than Entourage, which was buggy, but Outlook turned out to be excellent, and it's become my mainstay over the PC version.

Heat is an issue that I had heard of by some, yet I have not experienced. The heat level is better than my old HP, Compaq or Dell, and far better than my VAIO (which was very bad). The only one that has been better heat-wise is my current ASUS notebook running Windows 7, but not by much. Had been tempted to get a keyboard skin for general protection in the field, but heard that these interfere with the ventilation, so that idea has been tabled for the present.

Future:

I may upgrade to 8 GB of RAM, which has been recommended by a number of people if and when system performance issues arise. The RAM upgrades are quite reasonable, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it runs with the standard 4 GB at this point.

In Conclusion...

I could say more, but the best advice that I can offer is that if you get one, take it out of the box, plug it in and charge it. After that, turn it on and see how easy it can be... the MacBook Pro just works, as you'll see. Think Different is a reality, and this one proves it.

Nice machine. I'm not a heavy user and don't it for games. For my needs, this machine is great. I had to get use to Windows 8 it took about 2-3 days. I messed up the machine by changing settings and then had to reload the software but it has worked great ever since. I love the touch of the keyboard on this laptop (had HP Pavilion and didn't like the keyboard). I would never know it was refurbished, no problems at all. I have no problem recommending it. You do have to purchase software such as Microsoft Office. I found a free download of a similar program called Libre. If you know how to use MS Office you will know how to use this free software. It saved me $140. You can give them a donation to support the program but it is not required for it to download and operate. This product was a good choice and I like it.

First off: the audio on this model is truly incredible for the price range. The JBL speakers with subwoofer make it unnecessary to have to plug your laptop in to external speakers for almost any situation (except of course... parties and what have you). In fact, you'd truly be hard pressed to find better audio quality in a laptop even now. The new Lenovo y410 and y510 models do come with JBL speakers, however they are not of the same quality.

The keyboard is comfortable for my usage, since I have fairly large hands. I have heard that some people complain about the spacing between keys, but honestly... unless you have tiny fingers I don't really understand how it's an issue.

The screen quality is pretty good for the price and resolution.

Now for the bad.. well, horrible.

The battery quality is horribly sub par; the 9cell battery I purchased with the unit barely kept about one hour charge after a year and at current lasts about 35-40 minutes with wireless enabled. Considering that the laptop is plugged in almost 85% of the time, this is fairly terrible.

And most importantly (or annoyingly), the video card. The Nvidia GeForce 540M comes with either 1GB or 2GB of dedicated video memory. I opted for the 2GB over the 1GB merely because it was only about a $20 upgrade at the time of purchase. The card has pretty solid reviews on notebookcheck in terms of performance and can play modern games at decent quality. However (and this is a HUGE however), the thing crashes. It crashes a whole ton. Like a ridiculously ludicrous amount. And by crash, I do mean that the entire computer freezes along with a looping stuttering audio sound (which is incredibly loud and annoying) and must be powered down via the button.

There are several theories as to why the video card crashes (be it overheating, which obviously can occur in laptops, or more commonly, with this video card, that there is an issue with the clock speed). While it is possible to lower the amount of crashes by a great deal by switching to the integrated graphics card, I eventually found that this card would freeze during certain games, such as Starcraft 2. You can also go the "underclock the core speed of your 540M main card" which will also lower the frequency of crashes, but they still do inevitably occur under medium to heavy load. This could be an issue with the motherboard, 540M speed, etc. and that would be fine if Dell acknowledged the issue and voluntarily replaced or provided solutions to fix the crashing errors. But they haven't. In fact, they have gone a highly petty route by forcing users to extend warranties and continually replace the motherboard and video card. Oh, I said petty because on their forums, they also mute people and delete comments on their forums who even whisper anything overly negative about the computer or Dell's possible knowledge that they shipped out faulty components with the laptops and did not voluntarily pull the laptops back to replace said faulty components (if you read dell community forum posts in regards to how frequently and readily dell replaced motherboards for this laptop, it becomes fairly obvious they know of the issue).

Yes, it would cost them money to replace everyone's faulty components. But this is a premium laptop and by my standards, shipping out a laptop with faulty components is essentially shipping out an incomplete product, which Dell should be held liable for.

I am honestly stuck at a crossroads for rating this laptop. On the one hand, everything but the video card and battery runs perfectly and as it should, and the audio quality is superb. But Dell's horrible business practices in regards to informing their customers of faulty hardware (this also happened with the XPS M1530 line, see Nvidia 8 series class action lawsuit) leads me to have to ultimately give this laptop a 2/5.

I bought mine direct from Dell (preferred customer) to replace my tired

Studio 1550.

i7, 2.2ghz, 1tb drive, 8 gig ram, GT525 & intel HD graphics, JBL sound,

bluetooth etc.

1st thing I do is set it up, and then pull the HDD out, pop in a clean one,

and set it up my way, and leave the "factory" drive on the shelf with the

expiration date of the warranty. If I have a warranty claim, pop in THEIR

drive with no personal data on it and send it back.

I didn't get the back-lit keyboard.

This thing screams on photoshop, which I use daily. Keyboard is responsive,

and easier than several of my older laptops. Keys are solid, not spongy.

The dual video is nice on the battery also. I went with the bigger battery

& charger. The bigger battery has the advantage of tilting the entire laptop

up. The sound on this thing is something to make you wonder how they get that

sort of sound out of a laptop. The JBL logo on the bottom, I guess the entire

cavity of the laptop is a tuned port. When it is sitting on a table, you can

really hear the bass pumping through. The case speakers on the top side are

clear & pretty loud. 3 USB ports. One on the left, one in back, and a combo

e-sata/usb on the right. USB 3 is plenty fast for my needs. I use a BT

mouse, and it works without any issue.

Battery life for my use is excellent. I can have it charged, unplug it after

work at 5pm, put it in sleep mode, and leave it that way til the next day, and

it might use 1-3% of the battery, making startup faster.

Wireless works perfectly, no issues.

My first XPS 15 worked for about 6 months and then everything started failing: serious connectivity issues, screen randomly turning on and off, scratchy sound, terrible picture, .... Dell customer service was horrid. They went on for about 9 months trying to convince me that there was nothing wrong with it. Eventually, when the laptop could not stay turned on for more than 5 seconds, they replaced it with another XPS. Now, 8 months later, all the problems are back and so is the horrible customer service.

I bought mine about a year and a half ago, with specs for gaming and the computer has given me nothing but problems. The moment it was out of warranty, the hard drive failed, and when I got that repaired, the battery failed. Now, once I've fixed the battery, the graphics card is giving me issues and I can't even enjoy my games any more. I've dumped over 1500$ into this trap. Never buying another Dell product again, always skimp on quality.

Enjoying everything about my new laptop, from the back-lit keyboard that can be turned off, to how long the charge lasts. It's quick, screen is easy to view. Keyboard has a positive feel but not stiff. Yes, it's heavy but I wanted it for a replacement desktop so won't be hauling it around. Plenty of ports, pleased they are on the sides so no struggle to use them. Fans are quiet and they are at the back. I've not had any problems with heat, any sort of odd behavior.

Windows 8, well, that's taken longer to deal with and honestly wish I'd purchased the same laptop with Windows 7. Who wants to pay an extra $70.00 for Windows Media Player is one of the easier things to gripe about. But that is on me, not Asus!

I love this laptop, it's amazing! I am studying computer animation, and rendering takes no time at all. My games run smoothly (if only I had better internet connection. The battery life is great for such a big laptop. I think the only thing I haven't liked is the weight. It's a little on the heavy side, but it hasn't been a hassle since I bought a laptop backpack.

This computer looks beautiful, the screen is awesome and has many great features. However, the trackpad is awful! I've owned many laptops and this is by far the worst trackpad I have ever used. I have adjusted the settings as much as I can with no luck. I read other reviews where people have said the same thing so I think it must be an issue with the models in this line. It takes forever to get anything done because you often have to click on something 3 times before it actually works. Then the cursor will just shoot out and you will end up clicking on something you hadn't planned to. Everyone says buy a mouse if you use this model but I don't want to use a mouse. Also, the computer seems sluggish as well, not what I expected from a computer with these specs. My Macbook is twice as fast and has half the RAM. I don't want to spend the money on a new Mac though so I am going to see if I can exchange this for something better.

The production run for this computer was October 2010 December 2010. By the end of that year, HP had received so many complaints about this computer overheating that they requested retailers send the computers back to HP. The 3127 suffered too many catastrophic failures within the warranty period. In the next generation computer, HP changed the chip, the motherboard, and the fan.

I am highly suspicious of this model being sold as 'new' over 2 years after it's production run. I am guessing it's a gray market item (damaged or a return), since HP would otherwise have fuly compensated the retailer for the return of the computer.

Check Amazon for current HP models with a better i3 chip (2310, for example), 6gb of ram, and at least 640gb on storage for the same price or less. And buy from Amazon. The retailers selling this model will charge you a 40% restocking fee if you return it!.

First off, this is a 2+ year old computer with 2+ year old technology. I found that a better configuration can be had directly from HP with W7 or W8 for the same price of $499 with current technology.

Second, having owned this model, I know that the 350M chip is a 'gas guzzler', so to speak. It's a power hog and drains the battery faster than any other computer that I have owned. The 7200rpm hard drive adds to this problem. But more than that, it generates so much heat that the fan, which seems to run constantly and at an irritatingly high level of noise, cannot keep up. Though I kept the computer on a flat surface, the smallness of the vent prevented the inadequate fan from dissapating enough heat. As a result, this model has rather frequent shutdowns due to overheating. Beware of this if you plan on using the computer for over 2 hours at a time.

Third, the chicklet keys do not have a bounce. So, they must be struck rather hard to get them to register. If you hunt and peck, this problem is minimized. But if you type with your fingers on the keyboard, you'll have to get used to the need to strike hard on the keys.

I can confirm similar issues with the touchpad and the lack of a numeric keypad is a bit of a pain.. The monitor technology was an improvement 2 years ago but it's been upgraded recently.

I guess my point is that $499 gets you so much more in the current configuration options. The technology used in this computer (motherboard, processor, ram, speakers, hard drive, and monitor) have all been upgraded by HP for the same price.

And one more thing. Though this is advertised as new, it very well may not have a warranty. If the two sellers of this laptop are not authorized dealers (and neither responded to that question when I posed it to them), you will not get the warranty. That began when the computer was purchased and ended a year later. And so if the high level of heat causes a meltdown, you will be paying for a new motherboard and cpu out of your own pocket. How these sellers came to have 3 antiquated models seems odd to me, unless these are returns.

Buyer beware on this product.

I did lots of research before purchasing a laptop. I settled on this one because it seemed to be the most bang for the buck. I have had no problems with it, and I've had it for about 3 months now. In fact, I do everything on it. I love it! The screen is huge. It's not super light, but that was to be expected. It has a great battery life, and I've had no problems with opening multiple webpages as one user said.

The reason this didn't get 5 stars from me is because of the keyboard. It seems really cheap and plasticky. In fact, I can actually see the entire keyboard moving up and down when I'm typing really fast. Doesn't hinder performance, just seems cheap. Other than that, this thing is fantastic! I do recommend it!

Oh, also, Windows 8 is amazing. I'm sure that people who don't like it are those same people who complain everytime Facebook makes a change to their timeline... people who don't like change. It has all the features Windows 7 has, just enhanced. Give it some time and you'll get used to it.

***Edit*** Ok the computer worked fine for about a month and a half. I never got used to windows 8. If I wanted a tablet I would have bought one. So out of nowhere I try turning my laptop on and it says automatic repair. Ive seen this on windows 7 before so I thought no big deal. Except it tried to repair and failed so it restarted and did a loop of that. I tried to go into safe mode but windows 8 took out the easy feature to do so. You have a split second to press the button to get into safe mode and I never could. I called Toshiba to get them to repair it and they wanted to charge me for shipping and to back up my harddrive. It was only 2 months old and I couldn't get anybody there to work with me. Instead I took it to a computer repair place and got it backed up and amazon was awesome and let me return it for a full refund.

Big fan of Toshiba. Had a computer crap out lately so I bought this one. I love mat surfaces for computers, but not on the touch pad. It feels a little repulsive to move the cursor. Also not a fan of windows 8. It was made for tablets and I didn't buy a tablet. Does not look like on a 17 inch laptop.

I've had this lap top for about 4 months now. At first I hated it because of Windows 8 but once i figured it out I decided I could live with it although I still hate it. So, here I am 4 months later and I have a lap top that is getting slower by the day! Internet explorer is so slow that I feel like I'm 13 again and using dial up to surf the web! The computer is slow in everything it does, from research I've done that seems to be a pretty common thing with windows 8. The touch pad is really sucky. It's rough and textured and to be honest..it made my finger sore for the first couple of weeks I used the computer! So, I guess, if you can get past the slowness, and the sucky touch pad you will be okay. Me personally? I just bought a new computer (with windows 7) and it'll be here next week. I purchased this notebook so I could have something to sit around in the living room, coffee shop and/or occasional work trip. I am generally a MAC person, but this computer has worked pretty well for me, since I sometimes want to use a PC and my work uses PC's.

If you don't want an iPad, do want a "real" keyboard, but also think that netbooks are too small (especially the keyboard) and limited (smaller hard drive), then this is a good size. It's thin enough to slip in a back pack or carry on, and still enjoy a vivid screen, yet not so big as a 17 inch screen, that it should be considered a desktop.

Since I am a writer (at home and work), I like the "regular" sized keyboard, although the touch "mouse" pad is too close to the space bar that sometimes my thumb hits it and moves the cursor.

The computer boots up pretty quick, and if it sleeps or the battery looses power, it seems to restore it self pretty quickly, which I like very much.

Since I am a MAC person, there are several things I don't like about running MS products, including: OUTLOOK DID NOT COME WITH THE VERSION OF MS "OFFICE" THAT I BOUGHT (but then I just downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and am just fine not paying more to MS thank you very much). It is especially annoying that Outlook does not come with the computer, since such a solid email/calendar program come standard with a MAC. Also, there are way more software notifications and "reminders" that constantly pop up that are annoying.

I do like the way Windows now organizes "Libraries" of "Documents," "Pictures," etc., very much like a MAC (no doubt, that's where MS got the idea).

My notebook had an HDMI output, which is great when you want to hook it up to a TV at home or at a hotel on a business trip, if your hotel has a HD tv with HDMI. This latter feature is great, since that means you can watch Netflix in your hotel room on the road.

The wifi works great. It was pretty easy to get it up and running for web surfing at home and in coffee shops.

There's more I like, but the size and functionality have been great: Not to big, not to small, great screen, plenty of HD space for general purposes, plenty of speed for skype etc., just very pleased.

HP generally puts out some very nice products. This G62 is very fast, and I love Win7 over Vista.

BUT... and a BIG BUT...

There are new keys added to the left side of the keyboard... application keys... say you use CTRL a lot... your little finger automatically reaches for the furthests most bottom left key.. you hit it without out looking (like most good typists)...

BOOM, the Calculator pops up!!! Who the heck put THAT button there?

Same w/ CAPS LOCK... and TAB... and Shift etc. The only standard location key they left alone is the ESC key. Personally, I use CTRL and CAPS and TAB a whole heck of a lot more than the ESC key.

I purchased this product to replace a 15" MacBook Pro with the primary goal of having an ultra-portable computer with reasonable power and battery life.

The pros:

Fantastic battery life. Running Windows 8, I'd get 6 hours or so. Running Arch Linux, I'd get up to 8.

Speedy. This system is quite fast for being as slim as it is. I definitely couldn't complain about the power.

Attractive. This was the first laptop that wasn't an Apple product that I felt really stood out from a style and build quality standpoint.

The cons:

Backlight bleed.

Backlight bleed.

Horrible backlight bleed.

I ultimately returned this after I couldn't handle the splotchy backlight bleed around the edges of the screen. I went through three systems before finally giving up so it definitely wasn't just a single defective unit. This system will be fine for some users, but if you are a developer and spend much of your time in terminal windows or darkly colored IDEs, the backlight bleed will kill the experience. I have multiple photos of each unit, so I may post at some point.

I can't in good conscience go below three stars since overall, the machine has very solid hardware. That said, I'd probably put this in a 2.5 / 5 category due to the screen. Fantastic screen resolution (1080p) but just couldn't handle the white glow.

I loved this laptop right from the first day. It is a high quality product with a very stylish look. It is very light and at the same time very powerful/super fast.

If you want so: it is like a MacBook Pro in the look of a MacBook Air.

It is also worthwhile noting that the Dell XPS 13 works very well with Ubuntu Linux. All the hardware is properly recognized and even the special keys work.

I wanted a dual boot system that runs Windows and Linux and is just works nearly perfectly for both operating systems.

This is exactly the laptop I wanted and it holds what it promises.

And I cannot get enough of its stylish look. It almost became an intimate relationship.... my Dell XPS laptop an me .... :-)

AS far as the Laptop is concern it great and works for my needs (Photography) I got two of these;.when compare to other gameing laptops Alienware and such This still holds its own. As far as the Transaction was concern it couldnt have been a worse experience if Amazon added Tammey Fey Baker to the mix along with Gomer Pyle. This is a great computer i brought mine back in 09 or something like that, and it still works like a champ. It plays 2011 games on high graphics settings; also i do plan to give it a upgrade at the end of this year so it can last a few more years. The screen, the sound quality, the durability, and the four usb drives makes this a great computer.

One down fall is the mouse pad, i get very upset when my palm hits the pad and the computer registers that as me wanting to fire, or attack. other than that this is a good buy, a fair price for this computer as is would be 200-420. there is a refurbished one for sale, that might be an upgraded version, but if not i would not recommend it.

After a long research I chose Toshiba Portege R705-P25 laptop as my final answer for a very light but powerful home unit. Being spoiled at work with a much more expensive and sturdy military spec 12' HP Elitebook 2540p with Core i7, I wanted something that wouldn't break my home bank, equally light and of a similar power, with a bit bigger screen, so I decided to look for a 13.3' screen size. At first I thought that this laptop was expensive, but when I compared it to other units of similar size and features, this was actually very attractively priced (bought on special at a local M&B store for $800 plus tax). What really made me go back to the store and buy it after reviewing all the alternatives is the fact that I had it in my hands and felt its weight, or lack thereof. It is so light that it reminds me of fake laptops they use at furniture stores. After several weeks I could tell why this one won CNET's Editor's Choice. After several months everything it is mostly great except that I'm still not too fond of its keyboard.

This laptop is lighter and much faster than Macbook Air and faster and much lighter than the 13.3' Macbook Pro, not to mention double the amount of RAM and hard drive capacity. At 3.2 lbs, this is the second lightest 13.3' laptop, still with full blown 32 nanometers Intel Arrandale Core i3 CPU with built in graphics and 5-8 hrs of battery life... It has similar capacity and speed but longer battery life than the barely lighter 3 lbs Sony VAIO of same size, but you will pay more than double for the Sony. The spanking new Intel Wireless Display technology is also a good perk, but be aware that you need the receiver on the other end (I believe you can get Netgear's device for under $100) or one of the brand new and expensive TVs that have this feature built in.

Many other laptops have an incomplete 802.11 b/g/n wireless network card, thus lacking the capability to connect to a 5 GHz WiFi a/n access point. This one has a fully compliant 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi NIC and this is important to me because of the interference I'm getting from hundreds of access points in our building (I see over 40 from my condo), so I'm able to happily utilize the 5 GHz a/n radio on my dual band WiFi router, while everybody else is struggling with great interference on the few available 2.4 GHz b/g/n channels.

Long battery life is somehow achieved without using the slower ultra-low voltage CPU. The sticker at the store claims eight hours. I say maybe you'll get that when you're not doing anything processor-intensive and while using Toshiba's Eco power setting, which slows down the system a bit, but even on the normal balanced power settings and bright screen we still get five-ish hours, depending on the activity. Charging the battery while the system is working seems to take longer than on my 12' HP Elitebook 2540p work laptop. I can't figure out why, because this machine has the equal number of battery cells (6) and equally powerful 65W AC supply. Did Toshiba achieve a better battery capacity at same number of cells and weight and is that why this unit's battery lasts longer than on most similar laptops of other manufacturers? Still, the 12' HP 2540p has similar battery life, but charges much quicker (smaller screen?).

About Core i3 vs Core i5 and i7 humans can barely notice a 20% performance improvement on a computer. Core i5 and i7 CPUs do provide a bit higher speed particularly at turbo boost, but turbo works ONLY when another core is not busy, and at that time the single core is working at only up to 25% faster. I decided to stay at Core i3 and not be taxed the significant amount for the marginal benefit on a home laptop. According to my experience throughout the years, about 10% under the performance mountain top lies the treasure cave with best bargain systems that are still powerful enough to keep you zipping through the next 3-5 years without any disadvantage or impairment. Of course, if you're a gamer, you may be willing to go for 100% or so higher price for that 10-25% increase in speed, but that definitely doesn't apply to a home laptop. However, if you really want to see the biggest return on upgrade investment, instead of upgrading to i5 or i7 CPU eliminate the biggest bottleneck and upgrade the hard disk to a solid state HDD. That alone is the biggest performance boost you can give to your laptop and I might do the same soon because I've seen SSD drives do miracles.

Although very light and thin, this thing still has a DVD burner. Blu-ray would be a great plus, but you benefit from Blu-ray movies when watching them on a 1080p big screen (40' or more) HDTV, which usually already has a dedicated Blu-ray player or PS3 connected to it. This 13.3' screen, although at 720p HD, is too small to experience the full benefit of the Blu-ray movies. If you really want the high definition movies and the higher data capacity of the BD technology, this may be a deal breaker and you may go with one of the 14' Samsungs or lower end Sonys at a similar price. I wonder if an upgrade to Blu-ray could be purchased from Toshiba, but considering their loss during the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD, I understand their lag with this feature.

Pros:

Very light, but still sturdy with a robust hinge

Much faster than most other ultraportables of this size and weight

Plethora of ports (HDMI/eSata/3 USB/Multi-format card reader), DVD/CD writer

Windows Home Premium 64 bit w/ 4 GB RAM, upgradeable to 8

Brushed metal magnesium alloy chassis with good cooling

It gets totally cool if you put it to sleep for 1-2 minutes, even after hours of work

One USB port (the one combined with eSATA) provides power even when the laptop is shut off

Cons:

After two months I'm still not entirely used to this keyboard. It's not as good as on HP business laptops or Thinkpads.

No keyboard backlight or LED

Instead of being in the center, the touchpad is slightly moved to the left. This is causing occasional sudden and unintentional moves of my cursor to a different position whenever my palm touches the touchpad.

Some reviewers have complained about the fan noise under normal load I can only hear it at night when it's absolutely calm and quiet, but it's not loud enough to bother me. If you're in your 20s the high pitch sound coming from the fan may bother you, but at 45 I can barely hear it as it's virtually ultrasound. But now about work under heavy loads:

I noticed recently that the system can get significantly louder and warmer (not lap-comfortable without a lapdesk) when the CPU/GPU is heavily taxed as in Google Earth flight simulator mode with 3D landscapes and objects enabled and set to max. This also happens when I'm viewing HD Flash video on it.

All in all, this is the winner. Not perfect, but close to it, considering its cost, weight, size, power and features. It can get loud and warm when under heavy load, but most of the time it stays quiet and cool. Recently I've seen this unit priced at about $1,100 which is $300 more than what I paid for it. At that price I'd think twice, particularly when similar model with faster Core i5 CPU (model r705-p41) can be bought for way under $1,000, so first check the faster model's price at Toshiba Portégé R705-P41 TruBrite LED 13.3-Inch Laptop (Metal/Blue). If you can get either one for about $800 it's a no brainer. Go for it.

I finally decided over the fan critics (the fan actually can be heard, but is not as noisy as the people says)considering that it is actually 3lbs!!!!!! it's very light!!!! has the best performance for a pc of this capacity. This computer is everything you could ask for in a laptop: Fast, extremely light weight, plenty of RAM, large HDD, relatively small size (13.3). I have been very happy with overall performance.

However, two issues are worth noting on the negative side: Fan noise and durability.

The fan noise has been noted on many sites. Some reviewers are not bothered by it, some are. I am one of the people that is bothered by it. It's not terribly loud, but it is a unique frequency that stands out from other ambient noises. After hearing it the first time, my brain locked on to it and it's all I hear when the machine is operating in my home office. I have another computer humming away with normal fan noise (air flow through an opening), and other low level noises, but I hear this over everything. It's tolerable but not desirable.

Durability This one is less tolerable and I am currently working with Toshiba to repair under warranty (with no luck so far). The primary attractive feature of this computer for us was the light weight. No other laptop at the time ( Aug/10) had the same functionality and light weight with a built in DVD drive. Unfortunately, the tradeoff for weight appears to be strength of materials and durability. This laptop is cherished by the owner and carried in a very protective laptop bag at all times when not in use. When in use, it is cleaned with a soft cloth daily and dust and debris blown out of the keyboard and all openings by compressed air at least once a week. The computer is pampered basically. I mention this as background for the issue of durability I am/we are experiencing which is a cracked bezel around the screen and a loose hinge cover on the left side. The hinge cover is not much of an issue, but being loose they do add a feeling and appearance of poor workmanship. The main issue is the bezel around the screen. The laptop was never dropped, bumped, jarred, or otherwise abused in any way whatsoever. However, a thin horizontal crack developed in the bezel on both the left and right side of the screen at exactly the same level top to bottom, just below the rubber bumpers on the inside of the lid/cover. Within a few days of noticing the crack, lifting the screen to use the computer found a small piece of the bezel material to the left of the keyboard. The left side bezel had shed a small piece of material that included the rubber bumper from the area immediately above the original crack. The material is extremely thin and brittle and leads me to believe the rest of it may soon follow and deteriorate in time. There are no marks on the outer lid anywhere that would indicate even a slight impact on either side. If you look at the construction of the screen inner and outer covers, you will see the inner could not be damaged in this manner (by impact) without damage to the outer. It appears a combination of the rubber bumper position and screen/lid flex, has caused stress fractures of the inner bezel on both sides. The bezel is very thin and apparently (from the piece missing on the left side) also very brittle. We have never had any issues with workmanship on any HP we have owned (3 different laptops, all HP). This is our first Toshiba, and so far, Toshiba has been less than sympathetic and even ....less than polite on the telephone when discussing the issue. I'll keep trying though because I honestly believe (I know) this is an inherent flaw with the design/materials of this laptop. I'll give Toshiba customer service the benefit of the doubt and assume I just encountered an employee in a bad mood.

Summary: The fan makes a unique whine but it's tolerable by most people. It appears durability has been sacrificed for weight. I would highly recommend any additional warranty coverage that includes damage. This will let you avoid the argument I am currently having with Toshiba regarding the seemingly spontaneous degradation of the screen bezel or any other issues that may appear. However this will dramatically increase the overall cost of ownership. Alternatively, you could always use it as a desktop to avoid stressing it....

I assume this issue would apply to the entire light weight line.

I am not a highly technical person but I like my computer to do certain things well. It has to be light. This one at 3.2 lbs is light. It has the new Intel i3 chip, strong enough for me. 500 GB harddrive is sufficient, 4 GB memory is enough. It has a good camera, decent sound system. If one listens with ear pieces, it sounds just fine. Battery life is around 5 hours (it ran for 8 1/2 hours the first day I turned it on). Some people complain about the keyboard but I like it a lot. It has everything I need at large enough size so my fingers don't mistype. I purchased it around $850 and have seen it advertised at $799, a fair price to me. I use the camera with Skype and it works well.

I don't have anything negative to tell you about this laptop. It is my first Toshiba and frankly I like it more than the several HPs I owned before. The only minor minus will be that it gets quite hot but all other laptops do that also. Placing it elevated or on a laptop table helps to dissipate the heat.

This is my first laptop, and I couldn't be happier with it. I bought it because it has Intel's Wireless Display, which allows me to sit in my recliner and watch what I'm doing on TV with the Netgear Push2TV adapter. Super cool, and it works! But even without that, this is just a great laptop...lightweight, quiet and fast. I'm a long-time desktop user, so the keyboard takes some getting used to, but after a few weeks I am totally comfortable with it. I got mine from Best Buy for $749, so don't pay more than that for it. And believe me, the Wireless Display is a great feature. I put the laptop on my kitchen table, sit in my recliner 6 feet away with a wireless mouse, and move the mouse around on the arm of my chair to watch it on TV. I watch streamed football games, TV shows, streamed movies, YouTube videos, instructional videos...all from the comfort of my recliner on my 52" TV. Video quality is very good. I will say that the advertised 8-hour battery life is extreme; it's more like 4 or 5. But overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would do it again in a heartbeat. If you're on the fence, go for it...you'll love this laptop!

Buyer beware! I ordered a T530 and received a T61 instead! I was so pissed, but I decided to review it and give it a chance anyway. After close examination I discovered a few things:

1. It wasn't a 2.66 dual core, but a 2.33 dual core instead.

2. It said 4GB when i bought it, but received a 2GB system instead. Was it faulty advertizing? Did they really mean expandable to 4GB?

3. It did not have an NVIDIA NVS 5400M, Intel HD 4000 Graphics Card

4. It did not have a 500GB HDD

Yet, I will keep it, because for the price, it is still a reasonable deal. However, its the principal of the matter. I do not like to be deceived.

Buy Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E535 32605SU 15.6 LED Notebook AMD A4-4300M

I purchased a Think Pad Edge 425 in January 2012 directly off of Lenovo's website. It is the same laptop as the E535 except that it has the 14" screen. In that time that I have had it, I have suffered two hard drive failures which were covered under warranty. I had to take it to a local computer shop both times to have the data recovered and transfered to the new drive. I was sent instructions on transfering the first time; but I did not feel that I had the expertise to do so, thus I took the computer to a local repair shop at my own expense.

This week end I experienced another failure. I used the computer Friday evening to listen to and watch music videos on You Tube. It worked perfectly and the shut down was normal. I went to boot up Saturday morning and the computer was completely dead. Nothing won't start just dead. The machine is now out of warranty so I'm stuck. I'll take it to the shop again to see if they can get it running again. If they are successful I will buy a new Windows 7 machine from HP after I transfer my files. HP is still selling new Windows 7 machines I refuse to convert to Windows 8. 8 is another sad tale.

I am very disappointed because the computer was perfect for my needs when it worked. The key board was excellant. The sound was good. The screen was good. The size of the computer was perfect and the A-4 4300M processor performed well on all tasks that I tried to do on the machime. It was the ideal machine when it worked which sadly was not to often.

Took the laptop in to my repairman on 4/15/2013. Was advised that the mother board was bad. The cost to repair is more than I paid for the laptop. This computer is 13 months old and is shot. Wasted over $500 on this machine and have no recourse. Buyer beware.

I have owned this exact model and it has performed flawlessly for over 6 months. I appreciate the ability to add or subtract Tiles which you can use to call up web sites or programs. I love Windows 7 but Lenovo has improved it by adding soft ware which provides a large selection "tiles" which give it the appearance and some of the function of Windows 8.

I find nothing to slam about this laptop, especially when saying it is the same as a different model of a different size. I have not had any issue with the HDD. It has performed perfectly for me as has the entire laptop.
