I bought this for demanding software development under Linux and occasional gaming in Windows. It replaced my previous T60. It serves that purpose well, but certain small flaws prevent me from giving it 5 stars.

The matte high-resolution screen is pleasant to look at and at the higher backlight settings is quite usable in sunlight. The vertical viewing angles are awful, as is to be expected from a TN panel. The top left and (to a lesser extent) top right corners of the screen are noticeably darker than the rest of the screen. I'm not sure if this is a defect or a design flaw. I got no dead pixels.

The machine doesn't come with a color calibrator even though the default software asks you to calibrate your display. The thing on the palmrest is merely a slot for the calibrator in case you want to install one later.

The nVidia graphics card runs games well on moderate settings and resolutions. The resolution upscaling works pretty well so lower resolutions don't look excessively blocky. To my surprise, the bumblebee project allows me to use the nVidia card selectively under Linux without a hitch, and it automatically powers the card down when not in use. External displays don't yet work seamlessly under Linux though, apparently because the DP and VGA ports are wired through the nVidia card.

The new ThinkPad keyboard has a different feel compared to the old ones. I'd say it's slightly better. The new layout will likely take you a few weeks to adjust to. I dislike that PgUp/PgDown are now so far from Home/End, even though I can kind of see why one would want PgUp/PgDown to be close to the arrow keys.

The trackpoint is as good as ever, but the touchpad feels terrible with its default configuration in Windows. Linux had much better default settings, but Apple still has the best touchpads.

Under Linux the touchpad is by default so sensitive that it sometimes even misinterprets typing for taps. Setting FingerLow to 35 and FingerHigh to 40 seems to fix it or at least make it much more rare.

I got a 6 cell battery. I contacted the seller about the listing advertising a 9 cell battery and I assume they'll either fix the listing soon or start delivering 9 cell batteries. In any case they were very helpful.

The 6 cell battery yields a somewhat disappointing 2-4 hours on both OSes under light to moderate load with about 50% screen brightness. I imagine a 9 cell battery adds about 50% to that. Apparently a slice battery can also be purchased.

The fan is not as quiet as on my T60, and its sound has a higher pitch. It still doesn't sound nearly as bad as most cheap laptops though, and it's almost always silent or near-silent when idling. The machine stays very cool under light load and gets only moderately warm during gaming.

The speakers are serviceable but not good by any stretch, as is the case with most laptops.

Overall the machine feels solidly built, as a ThinkPad should. It's (intentionally) a little heavy but definitely still portable.

The battery locking mechanism looks like you could easily detach it by mistake, but the same was true for my previous ThinkPad and I accidentally detached it at most once in 7 years of use, so I'm not terribly concerned.

Other than the external display problem, Kubuntu LTS 12.04 has supported the hardware flawlessly so far.

This is a good machine and kind of long term investment. I was in between buying a Lenovo or Dell (M4500 series), then decided to go with Lenovo. I think, this is great deal for the given memory upgrade. You have to pay more for the same specification if you buy the laptop from Lenovo online website. I installed Linux Mint (Maya) and made it dual boot along with Windows. It works great with a few minor issues. I had a little problem with my order, the reseller sent me a laptop with different specifications than advertised accidentally. But, after exchanging several emails with them, they took the laptop back, fixed and resent to me. So, thank you guys, Jesse and Chris. I would have given 5 stars if they hadn't sent me the wrong laptop at the first time.

Got this on sale for $400. For that price, it's a great laptop. Has USB3, HDMI port, Bluetooth, great display, light weight (compared to laptop I replaced), basically all the features most people would want. Windows 8 is a problem for many but there are Windows 7 start menus available by 3rd party's (google startisback) including one for download right from Samsung to make it act exactly like Windows 7. Silly to downgrade to Windows 7 as others have suggested when you can make it work exactly the same without loosing any of Windows 8 features you may eventually learn to use.

I have since upgraded the memory it comes with (4gb) to (8gb). You must replace both modules, not just add but the memory is inexpensive. I also replaced the HD with an SSD I was using in my older laptop. This laptop now is crazy fast. Total bootup time is maybe 30 seconds. So if you can get this on sale and make the 2 upgrades I suggested, you'll have a quality, full feature, well built and very fast laptop for an inexpensive cost. Samsung makes quality products with support software built in.

Well worth the investment.

I have had this computer for 8 months. At first it was pretty good....now...not so good. When typing the cursor jumps to another area adding text to an already finished sentence or wipes out titles to documents. It is by far the most frustrating PC I have every owned and don't recommend it to anyone. I am just happy I didn't pay alot for this POS.

Best Deals for Samsung 15.6" AMD Dual-Core 500GB HDD Notebook

Good product:

Pro's:

-Cheap

-powerhouse for the price

-not the best laptop on the market, but the build quality is fine for the price.

-For this price it seems this is one of the best choice around.

-Good battery life, about 5-6 hours. I can take it to all my classes and still have a little juice left at the end of the day.

Cons:

-Keyboard mimics Macbook keyboard but fails, Keys are rounded squares and spaced far apart. As a normal sized male (5'8" 140) I feel these keys are too small for me, It's like they copied apple but shrunk the keys and failed.

-Windows 8 (I hate windows 8), very frustrating operating system, and windows 8 doesn't allow for downgrading back to 7.

-bloatware from Samsung (removable)

Overall if your fine with Windows 8, and can use the keyboard, this is the laptop for you in this price range. There are acer and asus models around the same price with similiar specs (one even has a slightly better GPU) but I'm gonna stick with samsung

Honest reviews on Samsung 15.6" AMD Dual-Core 500GB HDD Notebook

It's got plenty of power for any reasonable non-gaming functions. It's very frustrating that they force Windows 8 on you. I also purchased a copy of windows 7 and installed that instead. Adds to the price though.

Got this as a desktop backup mainly. Some have said sound is too low, you can fix this for the most part by going into HD audio settings and sliding the EQ bars up, all of em, 10 or so. This helps greatly, but keep in mind these are still just laptop speakers with limited sound range. Battery life is medium at best, but at just under 4 hours that's plenty for me for my uses. However for some this won't be enough, but to counter these points keep in mind the reasons for the high power use... this thing is fast! It has been able to play every game I've put on it so far. The only reason I didn't give it a perfect rating is, firstly, the screen contrast ratio is not fantastic. It's very crisp and clear but has slightly washed out colors and black never looks black. Otherwise the screen is nice and the refresh rate is fast. I have seen no ghosting or motion blur. DVD playback is good. The secondary issue, there is a very tiny bit of hard drive vibration detectable (not cooling fan or DVD drive), it's easy to put up with, but it is there. Laptop feels good other than that, nice construction all the way through, does not get overly hot, and the cooling fan noise even when kicked into high gear during gaming is reasonable. Keyboard also feels nice and types very well and silently. Touchpad is nice and responsive, could be bigger but that's just opinion there. All in all you will not be able to beat the value for what you get even with the above small issues which in no way hinder this laptop's fantastic performance. Install windows from scratch when you get it and dump as much of the toshiba software as you can though. Windows system rating is as follows after new Windows install. Processor: 6.5 / Memory: 5.9 / Graphics: 5.9 / Gaming graphics: 6.5 / Primary hard disk: 5.9 with stock drive (7.2 with SSD installed)

NOTE: Speed of CPU only runs at 2.3Ghz in surges when needed... normal operation it is about 700Mhtz less.

This computer is great from a hardware point of view. It is light, fast, and feels like it's made of high quality materials. The problem is Windows 8. It is designed to work well with tablets. It makes no sense for a laptop application without a touchscreen. You need to drag too much, which is super awkward with a mouse. If you can get this laptop with Vista or Windows 7, it's a buy. If you can't, buy a computer with a touchscreen.

I chose the machine due to the processor, I7, 16 gig RAM, the 240 gig flash drive and the 500 gig conventional hard drive. Each of these items lend themselves to handling multiple large complex files at excellent speed. The dual hard drives allow me to store the operating system and programs on the flash drive and the data files on the conventional drive. The combination works well in a machine which replaces an older laptop and a desk top PC.

Portability is not really a big issue with me but having a high resolution 15 inch touch screen, a back-lighted full size keyboard and number keypad are essential to my use of the machine.

We have a 4th gen Ipad, 8.3 Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and a Kindle book reader, all of which interact well with the laptop.

Battery life is three times longer than my Dell XPS, which is a great improvement for use in my home, office and shop.

The only two down side items are that the screen cannot fold or detach to be used like a tablet and even though the heat is routed out the side of the machine it is still warm but not unusable in my lap.

Overall the machine meets or exceeds my requirements.

I purchased this laptop to replace my older Acer model, which is still running fine after 5 years but I wanted to upgrade. This computer is a fantastic choice for non-gamers like me! It has a slim, sleek design (though some might find its solid matte black finish "boring"), plus it has the speed and power that my older model was lacking... not to mention the beefy 500 gig hard drive! Also a plus is the 3.0 USB port, which will certainly come in handy for transferring video files to a flash drive. The standard "chicklet" keyboard is nicely laid out and is comfortable to use, although if you are using a chicklet style keyboard for the first time you may have problems striking all the keys evenly so that all your "hits" register on-screen. Just takes a little practice, that's all. I cannot comment on the performance of the touchpad, as I have always preferred to use a wireless mouse. The 16 x 9 screen is brilliantly clear and easy to read, and the speakers are surprisingly adequate for a laptop this thin (about an inch or so). I'm also pleased that this model contains an optical drive (for DVD's and CD's, but not blu-ray), which many newer computers seem to lack. My only quibble is the absence of a caps-lock indicator light, although when caps-lock is engaged there is a momentary on-screen icon to alert you. All in all, this is a GREAT value for anyone wishing to purchase a new full-featured laptop that still has the Windows 7 operating system. I am highly satisfied with this computer, and I'm sure the majority of average users will feel the same way.

I like the V5 series. It performs well and it is lite and thin. I have had one come in DOA, but things happen. Future service on a simple thing like a hard drive will be an issue as everything must come apart to get to it. I wish they had made it a bit more accessible.

I purchased this hp pavillion sleekbook on black Friday at staples which costed me 299.99. Its not bad, very light and the windows 8 os is very responsive with the sleekbook touchpad. Note this computer does not come with a touch screen and no cd rom drive. It comes with bells and whistles like bluetooth hd webcam and 3 hour battery for internet use. Off internet the battery last for 4 hours. Last an hd screen display. This is a decent laptop if your looking to do productivit and lite media editing and nothing to heavy. I dong give 5 stars but I will only give it a 4 stars.

Not too impressed with Windows 8. I really miss the "start" button. However, that's a Microsoft issue, not HP. The integrated camera works well, no problems with any of the video features kids constantly watching Youtube. Extra USB slot is nice comes with 3. Miss a DVD drive for the kids, but most of the movies they watch today are digital downloads. I actually bought two of these one for each son. Very satisfied, the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the missing DVD drive.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion 14-b031us Sleekbook 14.0in Laptop (Intel Pentium

This is my second HP laptop and I am not at all disappointed. I Thought I saw the separate number pad but it is not in this laptop, which is ok, because this laptop is super! It is very light compared to my last one and very sleek look. The camera works well. The set up is easy. Still working on what the life of battery is [I am doing a personal study with multiple trials to do this, I will update later]. The sound is crisp and clear but still not loud [kinda a bummer]. The Bluetooth is great! I much more prefer the Bluetooth capabilities than a CD/DVD drive [which doe snot come with this model]. The description clearly states there is no CD/DVD so be advised. Plus the only negative review on this product is simply that of someones own mistake(s) when shopping. The Bluetooth is easy to set up and use. I enjoy sending pictures to the computer from my phone, using the computer as a speaker phone while I am doing my homework or taking quizzes. This allows me to just connect via cell phone and jam instead of taking extra effort to upload music or even popping in a CD [which cannot happen with this model :P ] It is just conveniently. Love this product.

For clarification: This is my second HP in 5 years. This was not a product or brand problem, the brand has been wonderful to me so far! [the story:] My other one was plugged in at the kitchen table so I could work on a final paper and watch my kids paint and when I was getting them their drinks my oldest son tripped over the cord and I was unable to brace the fall and my previous laptop screen shattered beyond use. It was a suck fest. I have tried a few other brands only to be an angry/psycho scholar who had been screwed during finals/midterms [that happened 3 times]. SO I am biased towards HP now, simply because they have provided me with great products :)

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion 14-b031us Sleekbook 14.0in Laptop (Intel Pentium

This 14-b031 Sleekbook is light and nimble on its feet. After using it for a couple of months a more balanced review can be given. Facing the new learning curve of Windows 8 focused my attention on the operating system rather than the computer. Once Windows 8 had been learned the Sleekbook has some neat and nimble features. First the weight is much lighter than my former laptop. This makes it nice to travel with. Open the lid and it starts up very quickly. The smaller 14" screen has been no hindrance. The keyboard is nice too, it seems just right. It never seems to run hot in my lap with HP Coolsense. It is my hope that I never have to use the HP Protect Smart for dropping it. However, packing a laptop around increases the risk of being dropped. The general features of being light weight, price, and amble work capacity, makes it an all around machine that does all I need to do.

I have always had very good luck with Sony equipment so I decided on a Sony notebook this time. So far after about one week I am not disappointed. This is a fast, beautiful, well-made notebook with an awesome screen. Amazon's delivery was very fast, and the product is as described. Right now I am dealing with a steep learning curve with the Windows Vista 64 bit that came with the notebook and it's compatibility issues with software and printers, but that is another story.....

Excellent and beautifully screen, I love the full keyboard and the software packages is fantastic. The start-up, customization and data transfer was easy, the start-up and support software are well design. The only minor thing I can say is the batteries are actually a haft one and last only an hour in normal setting and also there a problem with the sleep mode and the screen saver... not a big deal for me. Also to take a grate advantage of the multi-media they should add an HD TV tuner.

But after all it is fast, beautifull and I'm very happy with it.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VGN-AW230J/B 18.4-Inch Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

The backlight on the VGN-AW230J is poorly designed, resulting in an area approximately 0.5 cm high at the bottom of the panel that is evenly and significantly brighter than the rest of the panel. This same effect can be seen to a lesser extent along the sides of the panel. The opposite effect occurs at the bottom corners of the panel, where the backlight appears pinched and at times completely black.

Sony initially told me this was a defect and sent a technician to repair the laptop. After the technician replaced the LCD panel (and broke the bezel in the process), the problem remained. Sony then requested that I send the laptop to their repair center. The repair center has since notified me that the strip of light is "normal," and that despite multiple unnecessary repairs made at their suggestion, they will not provide me a with new, unmodified laptop.

Sony has also added a vaguely worded article to their knowledgebase describing the problem as normal. While they refer to the problem as a "glow," which can in fact be normal for some backlights, this is not how the problem presents itself. ®ion=UMRE_UNITEDSTATES_2_5&sonyregion=US&searchString=lcd%20bright&product=SG_VGNAW230J_1_5&sonytemplate=1&sonymodel=VGNAW230J

I was quite surprised with Sony's response given the marketing behind this particular laptop's display and their direct support of Adobe's color profiles. If you're looking for a laptop with a clear, even, and professional display, look elsewhere.

The down side is the weight, battery life and hard to find the bag but I got one from Amazon.com that is perfectly fit this laptop, it is Targus TLE400.

PROS:

This laptop is great! At first, I could not get used to the size of the screen, but that quickly grew on me. The full keyboard is absolutely a plus for me. The picture is very clear, the sound is great (not party loud though.) Recording videos and chatting through the webcam is great also. I love watching DVD's on here, downloading music, writing papers, browsing the internet, checking e-mails, etc. If you're a traveler, I would recommend purchasing the Neoprene laptop case for the AW series which was only $24.99!! I also bought the Linksys Ultra Rangeplus Wireless-N Broadband Router (the best price found on Amazon of course).

CONS:

The laptop is only 8 lbs. However, I was unaware of how heavy that actually is. Not really a downside, but it would be nicer if it were a bit lighter. The standard capacity battery that the laptop comes with has a very short life. That battery will last you just over one hour, which is not a lot of time if you're typing a paper, dl songs, or watching a movie. You can leave it plugged in, but I highly recommend purchasing the Large Capacity battery as well.

Hope this helps!!!! =)

I have been on a quest to find the perfect laptop for over two months. I have tried out the Asus zenbook, Lenovo u310, Acer Aspire S3, and of course here I am with this gem. All of the ones I tried had the 13.3 inch screen. None of them hold a candle to the size, feel of the Dell xps13. They all felt bulky, and cheap. I would have to say the Asus zenbook was closest, but even at that this one wins hands down.

Keyboard This is the most comfortable keyboard I have used. Chicklet keys (that light up!) they are not square and flat like most, they are almost contoured and have a very soft yet responsive feel to them. The are most like the lenovo keyboard but better. Asus, Acer and even the macbook.

Screen Very nice, of course could be a bit better (not the highest resolution, but does the job) The screen is the perfect size, I have had 12 and that is just too small, while 14 is too large.

Performance I do a lot of word, powerpoint, video, music and surfing. No games. For what I use it for, it is perfect

Battery The life is great not the best at 7 hours, but I can get 4 hours out of it.

Overall Again, I cannot think of a better laptop. the size is really what gets me. It has the same size screen and keyboard as the compition but has a better fell and look than any other laptop on the market. Yes, even apple.

BUY THIS! Make sure to get the 256g because the smaller size is almost full from all of the factory software.

I love the size, weight and styling but had to send it back. In the 10 days I had it, I experienced 2 blue screens, several messages stating that the battery was not supported. On day 3 the display went dark. I turned it back on for one last look before I returned it and voila the screen lit up again so I gave it another chance. Unfortunately the next time it went dark in the middle of a project it did not come back on. Did not like the touchpad, very finnicky. Don't understand why it does not have an HDMI port. WiFi was not as strong as my old Inspiron. Very disappointed.

Looks are attracting everyone around. This is by far very good one looks.

Battery lasts long as per description. I feel so empowered( especially after owning vaio which lasted less than 30 mins).

Start up time is less than 15 secs.

tracker is little tardy.

Black paint on key board is scratch prone. so be careful.

As for as looks and weight, it beats mac airbook.

it is more sturdy and sleek than mac airbook.

258 GB SSD and 4GB RAM makes it business friendly.

keyboard is back lit and looks great.

keys are comfortable but need some time get used.

Looks are gorgeous.

What it lacks

1) cannot connect to projector

2) HDMI slot is non standard

3) SD card slot also is not there.

amazon delivery time as promised in less than 2 days. Infact most of the items i ordered got delivered in 2 days

all above are severe constraints. Hope to find solutions for above.

Where do I start, I have been researching laptops for the last 6 months, looking at specs etc. I needed to replace my laptop that has become outdated. I bought a Dell 5 years ago that was just too slow to watch videos, download anything or keep up with all of the new software upgrades. I wanted a laptop with speed, good memory, decent video graphics, large enough hard drive so that I wouldn't be changing it soon. Plus I wanted an expandable computer in terms of memory so that I wouldn't be limited at a really good price.

It is a 15.6 inch, 2.3G processing speed and 4G memory, with 320 Hard drive it is fast, you can view most of the HD videos clearly they finally load for me on You Tube..lol I need one also for work at home, since I use it for a lot of number entries. This is one of the best if not the best keyboards w/10 key numeric pad. I have large fingers and it is comfortable and easy to use it is set up just like an adding machine for accountants, or bookkeepers. There is just enough texture and grip of the keys for fast and easy typing. Another thing I loved about it was the gray interior it shows less visible fingerprints and dust for those who don't like the glossy black of most Toshiba's out there.

It was easy to set up I was so worried about how long it would take. I had already had a wireless network so all I did was boot up created a password and sign on, the connected to my wireless network and I was on the net. Yes to some it might have too much bloatware(unnecessary programs) but for those who are not as computer savvy it includes all the files to get you up and running but you need to update them from time to time. The camera is so easy to use and Skype is already set up.

When I bought it was a much better deal it is bright and easy to use for night viewing, especially if you watch movies or download movies online. I have just had it for a month but as long as you have a good registry cleaner program to clean up Windows 7 it should continue to run fast. One downer is I wish Toshiba would come with the Operating System disks included it is irritating to have to copy them on your own.

Overall you cannot get most of the specs like a large comfortable full size keyboard, with a 15.6 inch TruBrite screen, webcam 1.3 pixel, 320G Hard drive, ATI graphics, labelfish for your CD/DVD, 2.3G AMD processor with 4G memory for this price you cannot compare. Plus it is lightweight easy to move from room to room. So far very happy with my purchase.

If you read the 4 and 5 star reviews you'll get a sense of what works on this computer.

But they may not mention that two things are in fact annoying.

1. The sound quality on the speakers is awful. If you want to hear music or watch a movie, you'll have to have speakers.

2. The battery life is way short. Usually about an hour and thirty minutes. Keep your plug handy.

I had been looking for a new laptop for quite some time when I came across the reviews on Amazon about this model. I had been advised by a computer-whiz son of mine to look for a Toshiba this time around, since in his opinion (he's a computer engineer) they are well-made and predominantly trouble-free. So when I found this computer, and read the reviews on its performance, I was sold. Now that I've used it for a couple of weeks, I have to agree. It's a sweet computer for the price. The keyboard is great, and since I do a lot of typing, I like how it feels. The Web-cam feature works great. And I love Windows 7 so far. The battery lasts about 2-3 hours, which is typical for a laptop. The screen resolution is great. Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5015 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver/Black)

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L505D-ES5025 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop

First and foremost I love this laptop! It is great for the things I do every day. I use it to complete assignments and to surf the internet. I have found that though this laptop has HD sound (yes it's awesome) the system speakers do it no justice, they are low and not great quality. I plugged in my earbuds and was blown away!!! I haven't tried it with external speakers yet but I will soon. My second issue is the two USB ports. To remedy that I brought a usb hub. Overall I am loving my Toshiba Satellite L505-E5025. If you are looking for a great inexpensive system, I highly recommend this one. I have the AMD processor and it's working great for me. Consider buying antivirus software and MS office when buying this product because it only comes with trial version of Norton and MS Office 07.

The L505 was a good choice for me. In the middle of a large dissertation, I had to dump my old beloved 2004 Gateway to keep up with Microsoft's constant system upgrade demands. The Toshiba is a bit heavy for a laptop but it has a solid feel for my mostly desktop use. Mousepad functionality is spotty but I rely mainly on a mouse. It is fast and (thus far) my McAfee installs happen quickly and quietly in the background without my even noticing. My only complaint is the squat dimensions of screen. The 15.6" "Tru-bright" screen is nice and bright, but the screen ratio makes it wide and short. If you are a document writer (vice an Excel jockey or primarily an internet surfer) you are giving up a lot of good screen space for documents. The wide dimensions make for other annoyances ... the power plug and USB port (only 2) with a thumb drive inserted on the right side require that you keep your mouse-arm splayed wide-right. Why not put these ports in the back? Otherwise, for my $540, this is a great machine. I looked at Dells in the same price range and they seem cheap and plasticky in comparison. Unfortunately, we are getting to the age of disposable laptops, in which it is easier to buy a new one than to upgrade. Perhaps cheap and plasticky, low and squaty, are the wave of future.

Just got my laptop today. It came with everything it says on the description except for the 8GB Solid-State Drive. This is the hard drive that includes http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ. It also has 2 video cards. Hope this helps.

Backlit keyboard with 2 different levels.

Stylish

Cons:

Runs a bit hot

Touchpad is a disaster

Fingerprint magnet(impossible to remove them too)

The ultrabay GPU's are still not on the market.

Slow 5400 rpm hdd(really is the only cause for slowdown on this laptop)

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

Had everything in the description: dual graphics, 2.4 processor, and a ssd cache for the operating system. The operating system is the only part that sucks. Windows 8 with no Microsoft office. Runs quiet and cool while maxing out the games I have. Good buy.

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

This laptop is too legit.

Boots up ultra fast, has dual GPU and 16GB of RAM, what the h*ll am I suppose to do with all that RAM?

But fo realz yo.

This thing is gnarly, games run ultra smoothly, minecraft is maxed out with ultra detailed texture packs and doesn't lag one bit.

The track pad isn't bad at all though I still use a wireless mouse anyway.

It does get a tad hot when gaming and the battery doesn't last that long but aside from that and the occasional mishap typing because some keys are smaller than I'm use to, this thing is a monster of a computer.

I also use it for programming and school work and it has been more than exceptional.

What else...

oh yeah anit-glare screen is awesome, speakers are awesome and the red back lit keyboard is even sexier in person.

One last complaint, it is as everyone has said, a fingerprint magnet, but you eventually just quit giving a s*** and forget about it.

So buy it, seriously if your considering it and it seems it meets your criteria just do it. I researched for literally months before I made the purchase and I'm glad I went with this choice.

It does everything pretty much anyone could want from a laptop.

People are saying it doesn't have an SSD, but it does. You can not actually store anything on it because it is used as an extended cache to greatly increase the speed of the hard drive.

-finger print magnet

I will update this with more information when I have the time.

I have been using it for a couple of weeks and all I can say is that this is the best laptop I've had so far (previous: Dell, HP and now a ThinkPad :D). I can use it for professional work (Matlab, AutoCad,...) and for personal projects too (video editing, video playing, etc). It's quite powerful. I also like the way it looks, before buying it I thought it was kind of ugly, but in real life it just looks great. The keybord at night is quite cool!

Even as a then Mac bigot the Lenovo (then IBM) ThinkPad with a writing pad and touchscreen was one of the few times I had bought a Windows laptop. Fast forward to 2013 and I was given a brand new W530 for work and hate it (though much less than the lousy new HP Ultrabook). I did not get this laptop from Amazon but love reading Amazon reviews and wanted fellow buyers here to have this review to help them buy something else from Amazon other than this Lenovo dumbbell set.

In 2013 a no touchscreen Windows 8 laptop is funny enough, but it is designed by a team of truck designers or drivers. They put a 15 inch non-touch screen in a body bigger than most 17" laptops. And about as elegant.

WARNING: You need to buy a matching Samsonite luggage set for this, not to protect the laptop but to protect other people's luggage from it. Get a set of two, one for the boulder sized laptop and the other for the power adaptor just slightly lighter than a concrete block.

It has the weakest speakers on any laptop I have ever owned, and the world's most atrocious sandpaper textured touch pad that often requires multiple attempts to register movement.

And what can I say about the Lenovo web site designed by those who were rejected for the mail room janitor jobs.... The site asks you for a 4-25 character ID, which it later rejects because you used non-AlphaNumeric characters, like a period in the name. They of course do not state it before you have clicked submit. You write a short review and THEN the site does not accept it because it has "too much text"... but does not tell you what the text limit is. Last time I will go to that site....

Though Windows 8 has been rock solid on this and I have not had any crashes at all since I got it, the hardware is the worst ever.

I cannot recommend this to anyone.... well, except my worst enemies. :-)

UPDATE 09/09/2013

------------------

As if things could not get worse, or as if to prove some latent tendency to feel pain and anger, I went to the Lenovo web site to look for some updated firmware and drivers. The made-by-Martians-for-Saturnites-living-on-Neptune interface would be funny if it did not make you cry for how you have to (or I had to) click on about a dozen or more links to display the drivers under various areas, and then to click on each of THOSE to see what the issue date was. If the date was later than the purchase date I downloaded it. (I did not download all because some were not relevant to me). When all was said and done, I dutifully and painfully installed each one by one... Until...

One of the update installers completed its work, asked for a reboot, which I allowed and then...

The Lenovo W530 stopped booting. It just stopped going past the Boot Menu, but instead of showing the various USB stick, external disk or even WIndows2Go on USB OS plus the internal drive, it simply showed ZERO boot devices available. In the meantime, the utilities area allowed me to run disk tests on the internal drive and memory etc. All came back 100% but the machine remained unbeatable. So, after spending one day trying to resolve that, I had to go in for a technician to try everything he could, and he had no luck either. FInally, the only way the machine was booted was with LAN startup and formatting and reinstalling the OS. That used up most of today. And now I have to dig for installers of all the files, not to mention the work in progress from the last few days that had not been backed up (since I am not at home in NY).

Word to the wise, Friends Don't Let Friends Buy Lenovo.
