1. Bus Speed is 800Mhz. In the laptop world, this would be right between slow and fast. If you a casual user (watch youtube while checking your e-mail and writing a report), this will be sufficient.

If you like to do multiple things at once (extended desktop to create dual screen enviroment, move large files to and from external HDs, burn a cd, with video(s) playing and a music production progam running) my recommendation is that you become familar with tweeking your Vista settings or buy a more powerful computer. It's not that it can't handle such lofty requests, it can. It will just be slow/will lock up.

2. Comes with 4Gb DDR2 (2x2GB). Now, this will be MORE than enough RAM for almost anyone. But what if you dream big and want to be a desktop in laptop's clothing? It's upgradable to 8GB, which is rare for a laptop. For the most part, 8 Gb laptop RAM (2 x 4GB) doesn't exsist. If you can find it, it will be at least $250+. HP Build a laptop states that a 8GB upgrade would be $400. Why would you need this much ram? I cannot say. This may be useful in the future, I do not know.

3. Harddrive speed is 5400RPM. This goes back to how much multi-accessing you do. 7200RPM would be nice, but not necessary.

4. Bloatware. I'm not really sure why this is much of a complaint in regards of any computer. Windows/Control Panel has a build in remove software feature that can remove most software completely in a short period of time. I'm sure that some computers come with INSANE programs that are so integrated into Windows, you must have a court order and holy water to remove it from your life. If you don't like the in house program, there is 3rd party softwere (free & pay) out there that claims to do a more through job cleaning out the gunk.

5. The Vista experience is rated at 3.8. Just a FYI.

6. This really isn't a "gaming" PC. It's just not. Spades, No problem. Minesweep until you can't see straight. It's your world baby. Crysis (and if you know what this game is, you know what I'm gonna say next) ain't happpening. BUT, if someone wants to try it on this notebook, please leave a comment on this review and let me know how that goes.

7. There is a slot in the PC that holds the mini remote control. On the left side of the laptop. COOOOOOOOOLLLLL! At least I think so.

8. Do I like this laptop. I do. It's not the fanciest thing on the market, but for the price, it's good.

I have only had this for five or so days but i am in love with it already lol.

I am a amateur photogrpher and i already have a bunch of photos stored on it, the space on this is great!

I have been on about eight or nine different sites (including youtube) at once and they are all as fast as just haveing one open.

The web cam is good quality, with great effects. the mic is crystal clear.

The lightscribe is great, even though it isnt in color i definitely prefer it over labels.

Oh, the only thing i wasnt looking forward to was the fact that the battery only last two hours. But it actually last about 4 hours, and that is with the laptop open and being used for four hours straight.

I shopped around and believe me, this is the best "Bang for the Buck" around. I no longer really play games, so the Intel integrated video being the only weak point was no big deal. ***Amazon's Ethernet Specs are Wrong*** This unit does NOT have Gigabit Ethernet, 10/100mb connection only. But everything else is top notch. Core 2 Duo 2.0, Beautiful 16" 720P HD Screen, Vista 64bit Premium (Do yourself a favor and buy the Upgrade to Ultimate 64bit), 320GB HD, 4GB Ram, eSATA, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, docking port, Wireless N!!!, remote and this is one gorgeous laptop.

I added a Gigabit Ethernet Express Card for $50, from Amazon, to make this laptop perfect.

This is a case of "You get MORE than what you pay for..."

I fell in love with this machine the instant I saw its specs and looks in Amazon... I got it delivered and the first problem I had was that the computer was described as having an internal bluetooth antenna, which after searching how to start it for half and hour and chatting with HP I realized it was not there! I got a discount from Amazon for this "mistake" which seems to happen quite frequently (I had the same problem with a Toshiba Satellite I purchased a while ago). The 64bit Vista is rather problematic than helpful. I am considering either upgrading to Ultimate or downgrade to 32bit. Although its processor is ranked as "genious" and it brings 4gb of ram I have runned tests with my old Toshiba running 32 bit Vista with a slower processor and with half the ram and time after time my new HP gets beaten!!!!!!!!!!!! I experience so many software related problems I cannot feel satisfied a single day about my purchase! The speakers and volume control give so many problems as well: I place the laptop in "mute" and still I get a fraction of a second of the beep of the instant messenger I use; the speakers are always making this noise like the power was just turned on; the volume control is non-responsive and then when it finally answers my command, it gets stuck both visually and audible. I still doubt that this machine can be expanded up to 8gb of ram as the specs in Amazon advertise, but I have not checked this yet. I guess I will get further disappointed... It's a shame that I feel this way for a laptop I found so captivating and (thought) powerful... Now I bought an xb3000 expansion base (which is advertised as the compatible one for the dv6) and I found myself with the obligation to purchase a new A/C adapter since the laptop AC should work with the base but guess what? the dv6 AC is too big for the base!!! So there you can add $50 extra if you decide to get the whole bunch. Bottom line: You can get the same performance with a cheaper, more convenient model and save yourself a lot of hassle... Sad but true!

This is my very 1st laptop, and 2nd HP computer. Originally I was looking for another desktop, as I didn't feel I could afford a laptop with decent specs. But I came across this while browsing. The price point was very good and I couldn't believe how loaded it was. Very fast, love the HD briteview wide screen. Loads up in decent time, even with all the bloatware and preinstalled Norton crap. It also has a handy little remote to run HP's media center. All in all I am very pleased with this computer.

I bought this computer from Sony brand new less then 30 days ago.

I could not wait for it get to my doorstep!

It's a beautiful looking computer ( if you like pink ).

Raised and lightened keyboard.

Wireless turn off / on.

Comes with Windows 7 64 bit and windows home premium.

It's light and easy to carry.

It has had one consistent problem that I cannot over come and therefore I am returning it.

As much as I don't want to.

The problem is the mouse freezes then the entire computer freezes.

The only way to fix the problem is to turn the entire computer off.

You lose everything that you were working on.

I have tried everything I can to fix it, but nothing helps.

Sony support cannot seem fix it.

Speaking of Sony support it's bad really bad.

You cannot understand them, they cannot understand you.

They don't really care if they help you or not.

My computer get's returned tomorrow.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (34442HU) 14" Ultrabook - Core i5-3317U Reviews

I've had the machine for 2 weeks now (ordered directly from Lenovo, not Amazon).

I'm very impressed. The keyboard is outstanding... one of the best I have ever used, on any machine. For a work machine, this should be the biggest selling point. I tried many keyboard in the ultrabook category and couldn't find anything that was close.

The 14 inch screen is very nice. It has great colors, and is quite bright. The "white" on this screen is certainly whiter than on my older laptop. Viewing angles seem quite fine to me. If you take measurements there are certainly laptops that allow larger angles but I don't spend a lot of time trying to look at my laptop screen with it mostly folded shut---the viewing angles on this are much better than on typical Thinkpad screens and are fine for normal use. The 1600x900 resolution of the LCD makes it great for doing things side by side (browser/document browser/email document/email, source code/program output, etc.)

The machine is very compact and light. The 14 inch screen really does stand out as being large relative to the size of the body.

I am a trackpoint user but the trackpad on this does seem very nice. It's the "clickpad" type trackpad where the whole trackpad is a button. The actual surface of the trackpad is very large and has a nice smooth feel.

I see the biggest negative of this machine the lack of upgradability. For example, the RAM is soldered to the motherboard so can't be upgraded later. This is the price you pay for the extreme portability. Similarly, the battery cannot be removed without disassembling the laptop; thus, you can't travel with an extra battery to boost your usage time. (Presumably, something like the Veho Pebble will be an option when they release an adapter tip for it which is compatible with the X1C.)

Speaking of battery life, I get a little over 4.5 hours of work time (wifi connection, typing, emailing, light processor usage, brightness at 40%, which on this machine is plenty for indoors---movie watching would probably drain it a bit faster). This is running Ubuntu Linux 12.04. Windows might last slightly longer.

Speaking of Linux, this runs it without any problems. I have checked all the hardware functionality except for the fingerprint reader.

If you are looking for a very portable machine to *do work on*, then this is a terrific machine.

I buy a new ThinkPad every year and so far the best one in memory is still the venerable T61p model and recently the x220. I was deciding on between x230 and x1 carbon and chose the latter. So how does the x1 carbon hold up after more than 3 months of usage?

PROS

----------------

1) Thin and light. Even coming from an already small x220 I am still amazed at how light and thin x1 carbon is. Carrying it on your shoulder bag feels like you are not carrying anything at all compared to the x220. It is really that light.

2) Rapid-charging. 30-40 minutes charging brings the computer from low power to full power. If you travel a lot, this will save your bacon more than once.

3) Keyboard is generally good. The new chicklet lenovo keyboard is softer and more silent than the old Thinkpad keyboards I have grown to love but it has its moments in the sun and certainly an item you get used to with time. At first, I thought the keyboard was a downgrade from the previous gen but after a few months, I do appreciate the fact it's softer to type and spacing between the keys is quite good with very few false key registers.

CONS

----------------

1) Pig of a AC adapter. It came with a bulky 90W adapter with the new square charging pin which I like but it is absolutely gigantic compared to the 60W one I use to carry for my x220. At the time of purchase, it was the only AC adapter of choice. Due to the super rapid-charging ability, Lenovo had to use 90W adapter but this one just feels cheap. In fact, I believe the new x1 carbon touch come with the same 90W output adapter but in a much slimmer design. Lenovo should never have used this bulky adapter in the first place.

2) Touchpad is mediocre at best. Left click is many times registered as right click. Multi-touch gestures is flaky and I had to dial down all sensitivity settings to almost the bare minimum to get the touchpad working to avoid false having my palm registered as mouse movement or clicks. If you feel comfortable with the dimple Thinkpad touchpads, you will really dislike this one despite the larger surface area.

3) Screen is just average. Many people have commented on how bad the screen is but I don't think it's that bad. It is much better than almost all glossy consumer laptop HD screens just because it is matte and doesn't reflect the room light back into your eyes. However, compared to the IPS 12.5 x220 matte screen, this one is garbage but then again that one is excellent and you are comparing something that's bad to one of the best. So average screen with good resolution is my final verdict.

4) The keyboard I mentioned is generally a good one to type on with one caveat. The paint finish/texture of the chicklet keys appears a little cheap, too smooth, and doesn't have enough friction on it. What I mean is that if you have wet palms or generally oily finger tips, your fingers will more likely to "slide" on the keys and and not stick to them when typing. I did't get this sliding feeling typing on older Thinkpad keyboards.

Overall

The package itself is amazing but the sum of the parts is only slightly above average. If you want a Thinkpad build quality and lightness, you have no other choice. If you need absolute power like 16GB of ram, dual SSD drives, and more potent CPUs, then I would suggest you to stick with a x230 until the next x1 carbon revision. The only thing you gain from jumping from the x220/x230 series is weight and thinness and that's it.

UPDATED 2/10/2013:

The 128GB ssd is showing signs of quality control issues. Windows 7 randomly starts up in repair mode to fix partition, files are starting to go missing randomly, and windows itself is reporting some folder as inaccessible and prompts user to restart to start the repair process. The frequency of the problem is increasing leading me to believe the ssd drive included is crap. Buyers beware.

I received the Lenovo X1 Carbon for Christmas and I was instantly blown away by this laptop. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a 14-inch screen and weighs only three pounds. This laptop doesn't just look great, it feels great too. ThinkPads laptops are known for being very reliable and durable and the X1 Carbon is no exception. This is certainly the best ultrabook laptop in the market. It is so elegant, pretty, and sturdy. My laptop came with Intel Core i5, 4GB of ram and 256GB HD which is super-fast for day to day tasks. It boots extremely fast and the screen resolution is pretty good. I just wish it came with a 1920 x 1080 resolution instead of 1600x900. The screen is readable at any angle regardless of the light conditions.

The keyboard is the best thing about this laptop. It is a spill-proof keyboard which for me is great because I tend to spill liquids on my keyboard very often. The touchpad is also nice and smooth. I have found that this laptop generates quite a lot of heat when doing intensive multitasking. I use my X1 Carbon for video rendering with Adobe After Effects and it really heats up the laptop after an hour of use. The battery life with the X1 Carbon is the best I have seen. It can easily last for more than 6+ hours with the brightness turned down a little.

Overall this is a great laptop for someone who travels or just wants a very light and thin laptop. I have been using this laptop heavily for a week now and have not experienced any problems. I am very impressed and pleased with the excellent build quality. Lenovo has another winner in their hands with this laptop. The spill-proof keyboard is the best feature this laptop has in my opinion. The resolution is 1600x900 which is great but it's not 1080p.

I bought this device from Lenovo website for $1850. i7 3rd generation/8Gb RAM/180 SSD/Windows 7. It was delivered to me as expected with the expected delays. From China then to Japan then to USA. I couldnt wait to get the package on to my hands. Thats how good of a puller is this product. I loved it right out of the box, really good looking piece of technology.

Pros:

.Sturdy to hold, good grip in hands. Doesn't slip away.

.It can handle all your computing needs. I am a business man and it is quite a good performer for me.

Can take some real load. 2 Ghz and auto boost up to 3.2 Ghz. That is some serious speed I am talking about. But on high loads the machine heats up,

which is normal thing. More speed more heat, at least for the current technology level we are at.

.Backlit keyboard.

.Keyboard. One of the best keyboard i have ever used and that too on a ultra book makes it more special.

.Real crowd puller, people want to know about it more.

.Dolby speaker systems. These are good. I love it.

.Matte screen.

.Rapid charging.

Cons:

.Finger print magnet. Your finger prints can be easily found all over the machine. It will absorb oil from your fingers and make it looks like oily

patches here and there. This annoys me a lot and i bought a electronics cleaning pack!

.Battery just gives me 4 hours. I would have liked a 6 hours for the price paid.

.Keyboard Back lighting has leakage, you might see light coming right off to your eyes from under the keyboard. I think i am being a perfectionist here.

Cant i be for the price i paid?

.Lenovo bloatware. Adds no value in what so ever way they meant.

.I would have loved if the charging block was smaller. Compared to the ultrabook the charging block looks so weird. Man this is big unlike you think.

.Within 2 weeks of buying, Lenovo has reduced its price by $230. I still need to get in touch with them to get the money back! how bad is that?

Which is kind of a heart breaker for such a good design.

I have had my X1 Carbon for about 4 days now. I am comparing it to the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A, Samsung Series 9 (new series) and the Apple MacBook Air 11.6 (2012 version). I have used Thinkpad computers since before Lenovo took over the PC division at IBM. Thinkpads were always durable and had the best keyboards in the business. I am happy to say that the X1 Carbon has the best Ultrabook keyboard hands down. Possibly even one of the best laptop keyboards ever. Here is how I would rank the experiences: X1, Apple, Zenbook Prime and Samsung Series 9 (which is atrocious). Unfortunately there aren't many more nice things to say about the X1 Carbon. If you have always used Thinkpads you will be very happy, but if you have had the chance to use the Zenbook Prime, SS9 or either of the MacBook Airs you won't be overwhelmingly impressed.

The one thing you can count on Lenovo for is to design a product, call it ground breaking, and proceed to use outdated technology in the laptop. Oh, then they charge a 25% upcharge for being a Thinkpad. I can agree that the build quality is pretty good. It is not as solid as the Zenbook or MacBook Air and is a close tie with the Samsung Series 9. It is thin and light for a Thinkpad, but with a 14" display still takes up a tiny bit more space than the Zenbook or MacBook Air 13. Many reviews have praised the trackpad. I spent hours adjusting the settings and still can't get it to work as reliably as my Zenbook and not even close to the MacBook Air. Plus, my trackpad was broken when I received it. The right side is lifted up from the front edge substantially and is very loose, so much that it clacks and rattles. Using it is pretty much impossible, so I will be returning it for this reason. The trackpad might be a little more reliable than what I have experienced, but the texture requires a firm solid touch to do anything, even if you have the touch sensitivity turned all of the way up.

Here are the biggest Cons of this laptop:

1. DisplayHere is one of those key areas where Lenovo dropped the ball. It is a standard TN panel display with only 300 Nits of brightness. I would bet it is slightly lower than that. The viewing angles are Ok if you are used to Thinkpad displays, but for someone that has used the Zenbook Prime or Samsung Series 9 (one with IPS and the other PLS, one 350 Nits and the Samsung with 400 Nits). The X1 does not come close. It is matte which helps but you will need to use this display on full brightness most of the time and in turn your battery life will suffer. I have run the battery down several times and the best I can get is about 3 to 3:30 hours and that is not on High Performance setting. The power cable is the largest laptop brick I have seen in over 10 years. I guess Lenovo needed it to be big for the rapid charge technology, but it is unsightly and not very portible. There are more issues that I have with this laptop, but will reserve more comments until I have had more time to use it.

After using this laptop for 10 days I ended up returning it. My trackpad was loose from the start and ended up just falling off. I noticed that the only thing holding the glass trackpad to the keyboard is some sticky adhesive and simply a flat metal contact for the controls which just pulled out of the slot. I have used Thinkpads for years and I can honestly say that this is one of the poorest quality Thinkpads I have owned. The display is not even in the top 5 compared to other ultrabooks. It has lines on the screen from the matting on the display, the volume from the speakers is sub-par and while the keyboard is very nice that is not enough to warrant the high price of this laptop. The battery life is terrible. I averaged about 2-3 hrs with 50% screen brightness and power save mode. This display needs to be used at full brightness unless you are in a dark room. There are missing features on the trackpad like two finger tap for menu (you have to physically click this trackpad), the AC brick is one of the largest on any laptop I have ever owned, certainly the largest of any ultrabook. That is probably due to the rapid charge technology, but it negates the portability aspect in an ultrabook (like you have with the AC adapter on a Zenbook or Mac Book Air). I would not recommend this to anyone unless they have to have a Thinkpad for work and don't want to carry around a 5lb. 410. I would still recoommend the X230 over this.

At first, I thought it was a really good buy for a Thinkpad. Three months later, this thing is literally falling apart at the seams. Even the cheap Acer I had before lasted longer than this thing. I chose the machine due to the processor, I7, 16 gig RAM, the 240 gig flash drive and the 500 gig conventional hard drive. Each of these items lend themselves to handling multiple large complex files at excellent speed. The dual hard drives allow me to store the operating system and programs on the flash drive and the data files on the conventional drive. The combination works well in a machine which replaces an older laptop and a desk top PC.

Portability is not really a big issue with me but having a high resolution 15 inch touch screen, a back-lighted full size keyboard and number keypad are essential to my use of the machine.

We have a 4th gen Ipad, 8.3 Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and a Kindle book reader, all of which interact well with the laptop.

Battery life is three times longer than my Dell XPS, which is a great improvement for use in my home, office and shop.

The only two down side items are that the screen cannot fold or detach to be used like a tablet and even though the heat is routed out the side of the machine it is still warm but not unusable in my lap.

Overall the machine meets or exceeds my requirements.

Best Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ 15.5" Notebook (2.4GHz Intel Core i3-370M Deals

I bought this laptop from a local Sony store 20 months ago for about $700. Sony was a good brand when I made this purchase. However I hesitate to purchase any Sony product after the bad experience.

I used the computer about 5 hours a day. Good part is that this computer is fairly fast, as long as you take good care of it. And the battery is still good today. However, the following problems caused the low rating:

1. The surface is made of very low quality plastic. You can scratch it using your T-shirt (and I mean it).

2. The video card is not compatible with the system. It even tells you so when you check the device manager.

3. The touch pad started to fail frequently after 10 month (and I use a mouse 90% of time).

4. The fan started to fail (and cause the fail of system) frequently after 11 month.

5. The microphone broke down after 11 month (and I use it about 1 hour every month).

The customer service was all right when I asked them to change the touch pad and fan. However, when the third problem showed up (the computer was still under warranty then), they refused to get it fixed for free anymore. What's worse, now both the fan and touch pad started to fail again with exactly the same symptom. I am pretty much convinced that those components were designed to last for only one year. And they won't only be installed on this particular model.

I won't give things up unless they are absolutely unbearable. But writing this review is the last thing I do with this computer.

I love this laptop. It's fast, durable and still feels like a new laptop after almost a year of ownership. I say this because after owning an Acer Aspire laptop for a year, it felt so outdated and slow that I had to upgrade.

The keyboard is great and so is the touchpad; except, that the tiny bumps on the touchpad have a flat stop in the middle now.

The screen is nice a clear as well as very bright. Wifi on this is better than most laptops as I can get WIFI from 5th floor in a old concrete building in Chicago! (My n320 netbook can barely see the signal and I get 4 bars with this SONY)

Cons: touch pad keeps moving the cursor while I type, glossy screen

produces too much glare, the "delete" button is too small, battery life is weak.

Verdict: I'd rather buy a Lenovo Thinkpad

I've used the Thinkpad many years before getting the VAIO and I liked

it a lot, because it had the matte screen (less glare) and I didn't have any

problems with the touch pad; I disabled the touch pad and used the nipple. The main downside of the Thinkpad is that it doesn't have a built-in 10 key.

This computer was a great purchase. I love the size, design, and speed of this model. The only thing I would change is the keypad, the buttons seem to have a little blur to them if you look closely, but my other Dell had the same keys.

I have bought Dells for over 20 years. My last Dell laptop has been in use for 12 years without any problems. The Dell before that is still in the house as a backup for 16 years. So when I broke down and bought my 10th grade daughter her first laptop this year for Christmas the choice was not which brand but which Dell. I decided on the 14R because it was on sale with the i3 processor, the 6GB memory and the large harddrive. She opens it up on Christmas morning and it crashed the first three times she turned it on. I guess Dell has replaced the "blue screen of death" with a black screen of death. Check disk errors, can't find the OS, and the charger sent with the unit is not capable of charging the battery to its full capacity. The unit will slow accordingly. SLOWER because the charger won't charge the battery. Seriously? I was able to salvage Christmas by at least getting it running and I replaced the cover with the pink top, but I was pissed that not only had I blown it for Christmas but Dell had let me down, BIG TIME.

The right click button on the touchpad is a little messed up. It only sometimes works and it sticks a little. The rest of the time it just left clicks.

Furthermore it has the speakers on the bottom of the laptop. (A very poor choice of location in my opinion.) However, sound quality is still good.

Besides those things, it's a good solid laptop.

If you use an external mouse, you'll be fine.

This laptop is just what I expected. not too light, not too heavy. Extremely fast start-up. It arrived on time and doesn't have all the unnecessary pre-loaded apps and programs that are on others. There is only one issue and that is the space bar. If you don't hit it in the "right" spot it does not advance the cursor. Maybe it's just the one I received, but I can see where the Keyboard is slightly raised in the middle and I think that is what the problem is.

I have owned the previous model Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830TG-6450 and upgraded to this model in the past few days -note that this review pertains to the same laptop I purchased from another retailer, although I did purchase a second one from Amazon for a friend.

I will post various technical specs that are not specified in Acer's specifications first:

Battery: Internal, same battery as in Acer Aspire M3 ultrabook, model AP12A3i (31CP7/67/90) 11.1V 4850mA, 54Wh

The 20GB SSD has a 4GB hibernation partition (which will have to be changed if RAM is upgraded) and a 14.64 GB partition used for caching via installed ExpressCache software from Diskeeper. There is a 16GB hidden recovery partition on 500 GB HDD from which DVD recovery media and drivers DVD can be created via Acer eRecovery Management.

Acer's free 'Theft Shield' solution seems to only provide an audible alarm if laptop is carried away more than a few feet from a connected Wi-Fi hotspot -I am assuming it used WiFi signal strength as a trigger, and if it detects a noticeable change (caused from movement), it sounds an audible alarm from the system speakers.

In order to use the hardware-based Intel Anti-Theft (AT) feature, activation codes may be purchased separately (~$25 1yr, ~$40 3yr). The item descriptions/part numbers for US market are:

In addition, Acer included a URL link on the Windows 7 Start Menu for a trial of McAfee branded Intel AT service, which I just enrolled in. The way it works is that the downloadable software client that gets installed upon activation via your web browser synchronizes with the server to check for the existence of a lock activated via web browser or (good luck with this one!) phone support. After a few painful phone conversations with phone representatives -first at McAfee support, then at Intel Anti-Theft support, one stated that the activation period for the service was for the duration of ownership of the product. I still doubt that, given that the terms & conditions I revisited when I signed up mention that if no term is given it would be for 1 year, so I am assuming that is how long it will really last, but we'll see.

Anyway, so if the anti-theft software syncs with the server and finds an existing lock in place, it immediately powers off the computer and sets the lock flag. When powering up the computer again, you are greeted with a screen that it is locked. The web interface permits you to customize with a short message with (presumably) contact information to return the laptop to you, but you could put any text in that field. In addition, via the web interface, you can set a pre-defined lock time choosing from disabled or 3-30 days in 1 day increments -so if the PC does not sync with the servers via an internet connection for that amount of time, it will lock itself the same way as explained before. By default, the pre-defined lock time is 21 days.

Now for the actual review -I purchased this because I needed/wanted a portable NVIDIA Kepler based workstation for developing CUDA code. Currently (as of 07/12/2012), NVIDIA has a Verde 304.79 driver that supports CUDA 5 Preview -there will eventually be a non-beta driver, but in the meantime this driver works for my purposes. Access to the DDR3 memory slot requires removing all the back screws and using a platic pry tool in order to open up the top case, in addition to removing at least 3 Zero-Insertion Force (ZIF) connectors for keyboard, keyboard backlight (KB) and touchpad (TP), which are all in the bottom part of the case, so pry and lift from the LCD side. Be very careful, as it is VERY easy to break these type of ZIF locking connectors. Disconnect the battery cable also, just to be on the safe side. Replacing the HDD with SSD is possible, but also requires taking the daughterboard (DB) that contains the SD slot/headphone/mic port out -held by two small screws, as one HDD screw is underneath it.

Replacing the ODD is easy, just one screw holds it in. However, I suggest being VERY careful while removing/replacing the ODD, the standoff holding the drive became loose on the laptop I purchased from the previous retailer -it is held down poorly to a thin piece of metal attached to the bottom of the palmrest, boo Acer! I successfully used super-glue to re-attach it, but it is not an easy task, it took a few tries. If you are replacing the drive with another one, check the thickness -if it is just a little bit more thick, remove the top cover entirely, put the drive in place with the screw bracket over the standoff, and screw everything back together. That way the standoff does not have force applied to its side, and is MUCH less prone to breaking off. In fact, I'd say loosed all the other bottom screws before attempting to take the ODD out in the first place. It's a tight fit... that's what she said! ;) For that matter all the clearances/lengths of FFCs/ZIF sockets are very close and not much give is left, it is good to keep in mind if you decide to open up the system for upgrades/repasting or some other reason.

I figured this hardware review would help any tech-inclined people that want to try to Hackintosh this or use Ubuntu/some flavor of Linux.

Unlike the previous TimelineX generation that throttled the CPU to avoid overheating, the M5-481TG seems to throttle/downclock the GPU to 270 MHz. This proved acceptable in my initial testing with Heroes of Might and Magic VI and Metro 2033, as gameplay was decently responsive, even at the highest settings. (Caveat, New Game/Load/Quit screen of Metro 2033 had black bands when using DirectX 11, changing to DirectX 10 fixed this -probably a driver issue). In my opinion throttling and not the greatest ever panel are the true downfalls of this laptop, and account for my 1 star deduction. Other than that, I think this one is a keeper for a while!

Not-so-technical review -The touchpad can be very fluid, especially with a lighter touch. I'm still getting used to physical buttons being part of the touchpad, so I cannot comment much. There does not seem to be any flex on the keyboard -it is screwed into the palmrest/top cover from the inside with plenty of small screws. There is, however, some slight flex along the top part of the palmrest, but nothing that creaks/cracks. Viewing angles for the LCD screen could be better, but for a laptop that's about 1/3 of the price of a MacBook Pro model with Kepler graphics there had to be some compromise.

The SSD hard drive caching the HDD is nice if you're not used to SSD speeds -I am, and it feels slow. ;) I mistakenly ordered a regular form factor (9.5mm height) SSD to use, only to realize that the HDD is a low-profile 7mm height. I was able to return it and purchase SAMSUNG 830 Series 2.5-Inch 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7PC256B/WW, given it is a 7mm height, and will fit. I have used Crucial M4s and Plextor M3s, but this Samsung sounds quite promising, and faster write speeds compared to the others, so it's a worthwhile upgrade.

I like Acer as they usually make very solid products for the price and have much better support that Lenovo... But sadly there is just something very wrong with the 14 inch M5-481TG-6814 model.

While the notebook is still good value for the money, playing some of the more recent games at higher settings will utterly destroy it AND there seems to be no sort of built in overheat protection. Planetside 2 and The Secret World, while not too graphically intensive will bring this ultrabook to it's knees.

Using it as an actual laptop (the way it's meant to be used) results in damaging the system, however these problems go away with a very cheap add on. This is one of the few notebooks where I absolutely MUST suggest that you also get a decent laptop cooler.

The Good:

About 6-7 hours playtime when doing anything but gaming.

USB 3.0.

Third gen Intel CPU + GPU.

HDMI.

SSD for (almost) INSTANT on!

Full sized back-lit keyboard!

14", lightweight form factor.

Great price if purchased elsewhere (I got mine slightly cheaper and with a $100 gift card).

Good sound for such a small notebook.

RAM can be expended to 10GB (with an extra 8GB stick).

Fairly powerful Nvidia GPU.

The Bad:

Only ONE slot for a RAM upgrade (the other 2GB is built in).

Comes with a lot of pre-installed useless software (bloatware).

The 20GB of SSD is NOT accessible. Yeah, that's right. No idea behind the reasoning on this one.

It gets hot REAL fast if you start gaming. To the point of actually burning your lap. This is the hottest notebook I have ever owned, and I had plenty.

Flaky wireless. Lots of dropped packets. Fixed easily and cheaply by buying another adapter.

Replacing the HDD, WiFi card, or even RAM requires unscrewing over a dozen screws (around 14 to 16 actually).

Screen resolution is limited to 1366 x 768. This is a WASTE of the powerful Nvidia GPU in this unit (which is good at overclocking, but should not be because of the intense heat the laptop already experiences).

While playing graphically intensive games, this laptop's tiny three cell battery becomes nearly useless. You will get a few hours (at most) of gaming done unless the system is plugged in.

The Ugly:

My first M5-481TG-6814 worked great during my initial Planetside 2 playsession. After about three hours of gaming, it got so hot that it shut down. Turning it back on failed. It just died. Since it was still during my first week of purchase, I contacted the Egg and had them replace it.

This time I bought a single fan, low profile cooling pad to keep it on. My second M5-481TG-6814 still got a bit hot and eventually the screen started to artifact while gaming (at least it didn't shut down by itself). Restarting would fix it for a while, only to have the problems reappear in a few more minutes of gaming.

The third (and I hope final 6814) is sitting on a dual fan cooling pad, which rises quite a bit higher and keeps it relatively cool. No issues so far (for a few weeks now actually), but the trade off is that this ultrabook is now not nearly as mobile as it was designed to be.

Conclusion:

If you are in the market for a laptop that you can use just for browsing the web, watching movies, and word processing do yourself a favor and get something (much) cheaper.

If you are in the market for a gaming ultrabook, the Acer TimelineU M5-481TG-6814 is a good purchase for the price, just do yourself a favor and buy a nice cooling pad...Or you could get a much nicer desktop at a fraction of the cost, since with a giant pad this thing becomes a monster (defeating the ultrabook purpose).

If they just solved the heat issue (by adding more/better fans and better heatsink), this would easily be the best ultrabook for the money.

UPDATE --I ended up returning this ultrabook because the massive cooler prevented it from really being mobile. For $120 more, I got a much better (and cooler) machine. It also came with a GT 640M LE, and I managed to overclock it to 850MHZ (with a simple bios flash), allowing me to play all the games I wanted at maximum settings.

I'm not too ashamed to admit that I mostly chose this laptop for it's low price and ability to play Guild Wars 2. The laptop boosts very fast and plays GW2 on medium setting very smooth and nicely. I tried it on the highest setting as well, although the graphics was great, the game play slowed down a lot. The LED lit keyboard makes it great for working in the dark. However, there are a couple of things that really bugs me about this laptop.

1. Connection to Wifi. Compared to the three other laptops in my house (Toshiba, Dell, and ASUS), this computer has issues getting enough wifi signal. I have to sit very close to the router for the wifi bar go to fill up. If I'm downstairs, it's connection will be very weak and sometimes with no signal.

2. Overheating. The fan is located on the top right side of the laptop. It overheats to a point where it burns my skin. I use a cooling pad with it to reduce the overheating, but that greatly reduces the laptop's portability.

3. Only two USB connections and they are both in the back. This is not very convenient at all! My boyfriend got me a USB hub to go with it...but it's such a pain in the butt =(

However, overall, this is a great product! The smooth surface makes it great for laptop decals! :D

Pros: The best thing about this ultratop (half ultrabook, half laptop) is the large amount of features wrapped around a sexy aluminum shell.

-CPU-

The 3rd generation Core i5 allows for great battery life but overclocks itself to gain horsepower when you need it.

-GPU-

The main deciding factor in me buying this laptop is the Nvidia 640m 1gb video card. It's a powerhouse that can handle almost anything you throw at it. I've tried out crysis on High, Max Payne 3 on high, home front on medium, portal 2 on high all with no struggle at all. This laptop comes with nvidia optimus so it only uses the nvidia card when you need the processing power. The other 95% of the time it uses the on board Intel 4000 graphics card as an energy saving measure.

-Size & Shape-

This laptop is very small under an inch but very dense. It's technically a ultra book but with a DVD drive. The aluminum skin allows the computer to stay clean.

Cons: The upgrade capability is nonexistent, there are no user replaceable parts on this laptop including the battery which i confirmed with Acer. The non removable battery is an non-issue because it is a lithium polymer battery with a lifespan of ~ 4 years.

I upgraded the ram to the 6gb limit and it required me to remove ~12 screws on the bottom and hold the keyboard panel up while i swapped out the ram stick since there are ribbons connecting the mouse pad and keyboard holding both halves together. It has 2 GB stick that is integrated on the motherboard but it has a single ram slot which can be upgraded.

The reason why I wanted to upgrade the ram is when the computer is using the Intel integrated video card it takes ram away from your computer giving a high idle ram usage ~ 75%, which makes things somewhat slow for multitasking. This is a non-issue during gaming because when using the nvidia dedicated card it has its own ram and frees up the ram used by the Intel card.

Other Thoughts: --Pros Continued--

-Sound-

The sound is amazing using the Dolby home theater sound system. It generates very loud and rich noise that will fill a good sized room.

-Keyboard-

I like the island keyboard, it makes typing a enjoyable experience. The back-lit feature is very nice and adds to the luxuriousness.

-Ports-

I only has 2 USB 3.0 which is alright considering its part ultra book, but also has a HDMI and Ethernet port. I use the HDMI port to connect to my 39" television as a monitor which gets around the whole low resolution laptop screen that most people are complaining about. The screen can only display 1366x768 but can output higher though HDMI.

-Hard Disk-

Nothing too special about the normal disk drive but the 20gb SSD is mostly hype. It only used during the boot up, hibernation and standby processes and does nothing during actual computer use.

Overall I love my new Acer and have no regrets!

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago, and it has been amazing. First of all, everything about it is beautiful. Just completely gorgeous. It is bold, but yet sleek and elegant and really attracts attention. It really is the most gorgeous laptop I've ever seen.

If you are on the fence between this one and the slightly cheaper black one with 8GB of ram, go for the white if you like the style better (To me, it looks worlds nicer). 6GB is a very nice amount of ram and it isn't as though ram is outrageously expensive to upgrade if you really want 8GB. I am a photographer who uses very high quality DSLR photos and makes flash animations that slowed down my other computer, but this one handles them like they are nothing. The display is beautiful and perfect for movie watching. In fact, in my family, we all have laptops, but we always use mine to watch movies now because it is so clear. Finally, for those of you who are gamers, it handles my favorite MMORPG like a dream. It really is the perfect laptop for all three activities.

Another thing I didn't even know when I bought it was that it can connect with your Bluetooth capable phone and play music from it.

The lit keyboard is a lot of fun and the ability to launch the web in a matter of seconds using a single button is pure genius. It's perfect for times when you're rushing.

Now, being completely honest, there are 2 things I'm not thrilled with when it comes to this laptop, but they aren't deal-breakers:

#1. The sound system is pretty bad. Maybe that is because I have a Bose system in my car, that I'm a film major, or that I'm a pianist, but I'm pretty accustomed to high quality sound. The sound system from this sounds very tinny. So, I found a solution; I purchased the Logitech lap desk with a fan (it doesn't overheat or anything like that, I'm just paranoid because my first laptop did...) and a speaker system and connected that to it (it is also white, so the combo looks pretty sweet) and the sound is now top notch. So, I'm VERY satisfied. My laptop stays cool, even while I'm doing highly taxing things like gaming and my sound is now fantastic.

#2. I have no idea what in the world that part is called, but the part you drag your finger over in order to move the arrow. I don't feel as though it responds as well as my last laptop's did (it was a Toshiba Satellite), and yes, I have already placed it on maximum sensitivity. So, I simply purchased a mouse so I don't have to deal with it. (I must admit it does have a few neat features, though. Like the ability to scroll by moving your finger in a spiral shape, but sometimes it would take me like 3 times to get it to work... I hear a lot of people like this, so maybe it's just me...)

Other than those two items, literally everything else is top notch. Very beautiful craftsmanship. Sleek design. Fast. Looks even better than in the photos. You will not be disappointed with this laptop. Sony has truly outdone themselves.

Pair it with 17 inch White Notebook Laptop Shoulder Messenger Bag / Carry on Briefcase, the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700, a white mouse, and a black mouse pad and you are ready to go.

Therefore, 5 stars. It is the perfect all-around laptop. And classy to boot.

As of this writing, I'd give it 3/5 Stars with a title of " If I had known ":

First thing I want to talk about is the lower left-hand corner. It melts. No joke. There is a light over there, and one day, it suddenly looked like I'd dropped it. Which, considering I'm a gadget person and pride myself in having the most stylish of gadgets, is mortifying. I'm literally known by all my friends and coworkers and members of my church to be a gadget person! I've had to explain to so many people that that corner heats up and separated itself from the bottom part of the laptop. Ack...

If you closely inspect it, you can see it is not possible that it could be from being dropped, but it has to be from some internal overheating issue. That didn't change the functionality of the laptop, but I'd think twice if you tend to sell your laptop after a year or two of use. I can't remember while I'm writing this when I purchased this laptop, but my review will show that date...

At first, I thought it was my fault, until I went on eBay and found the same exact laptop with the same exact bend in the same exact spot. This is a defect. If I'd known that was going to happen, maybe I'd have done something to cool down that corner or whatever... But I don't know how anyone would have known...

Next, the Blu-ray player doesn't work. I also have an iPad, and got used to watching movies on it, so I never bothered to try the Blu-Ray player (though I had played DVDs, which were fine.) I finally got around to putting in a Blu-Ray disc, and it won't play. I tried everything. I went to Sony's site, and tried their fixes, downloaded VLC media player, restarted the computer... I wonder if it ever worked...

Sony customer service stinks to high heaven. About a year after I got the laptop, it couldn't find Windows. Then, I started having problems with logging in, where it would not be able to bring up my desktop. I learned how to fix this, though (go to safe mode and stop all but the essential programs from booting up at startup.) That may be a Windows problem, though... Nevertheless, before I knew how to fix it, I called Sony for help and they ended up installing this diagnostic program on my computer and using all this non-specific jargon to creatively not tell me what my problem was. Then, they wanted to charge me over a hundred bucks to fix this one issue. I declined and did more researched and learned how to fix it myself. It took me 5 min to fix it once I knew what I was doing. Talk about taking advantage...

I've been asked before why I didn't just sell it and get a Macbook. Here is why I still own and use this laptop:

It is still fast. Though I got it a bit ago, compared to what's out there, it is still powerful and modern and will be for likely a couple more years. It still does the work I bought it to do and still does it well. I even refer to it as my "powerhouse"

Macbook Pros go up to 15 inches nowadays. This laptop is 16.4 inches. I like the extra room.

The Mac is 21 or 25 inches and then they have a 27 inch model, I think. But, it isn't portable. I can take this laptop with me.

A Macbook with this kind of power would run me double what I paid for this laptop. Despite my frustrations, the price was right. Not to mention, I've long since paid off this laptop.

It looks better. Not that the Macbook or Mac is ugly or anything, but this VAIO is stylish. It just looks better.

Overall:

I'd still recommend this laptop, but never for an amateur user. Function-wise, if you don't rely on the Blu-Ray player (like I tend not to, I just randomly was handed a Blu-Ray to watch, otherwise, I likely never would have noticed the Blu-Ray player had issues) and you have the technological know-how or research skills to help yourself when there are problems, and you do not intend to sell it for anything even remotely close to what you have to spend to get it, you'll be fine. If even one of those does not apply to you, skip it.

Ah yes, and one more thing. It is a white laptop, so expect it to get dirty.

This laptop is fast, plays full hd videos,blu ray, has an amazing keyboard layout, has a great screen, the sound is loud, and it plays most games on med-high settings. Compared to other similar gaming machines, this one is a better deal! You get it all. The only downsides are the battery and weight. It dies pretty fast, usually lasts me a good 2-4 hours with heavy browsing and viewing videos. Of course it lasts longer just doing basic things. When trying to carry the laptop with one hand, it is pretty darn heavy. This laptop also looks very stylish. I would recommend this to everyone! I also have one suggestion: Never use this laptop when your hands are dirty with ink. IT WILL STAIN! And if you are a perfectionist like me, you will be pretty upset.

I had this laptop for just over a year. Didn't buy extended warranty. I used it approximately less than 3 months total. When the year was over, the video graphics card and the LCD screen both died. Sony support calculated minimum $600 to fix/replace parts with new + to/from shipping cost. I would not buy a Sony laptop again nor recommend them.

The laptop has awesome hardware characteristics, the screen is really good and has a high resolution.

However, the overall design of the laptop is ugly.

The keyboard is backlit, but the slits between the keys and the base are too big, so the white LEDs are shining right in your eyes.

The plastic gets all stained with fingerprints from a single touch.

The dotted touchpad is annoying I prefer the smooth sliding and don't get why one has to put in extra force to fight the friction.

The touchpad is not sensitive enough I can't move the pointer from one side of the screen to the other in a single go.

The left/right mouse buttons are too far away from each other, so you can't use them both with the same finger.

This laptop is currently sold in two versions, a grey/black color and a pink/white color. I picked up the pink/white version for my daughter. I'm the techie of the family and work on computers regularly. So as soon as it arrived, I spent some time going over everything about it and setting it up.

The outer casing of this laptop has a brushed metal look to it. Looks great and hides fingerprints. Little detail areas like the mouse pad buttons are done in a shiny chrome. The colors on the keyboard are offset by a section of the same brushed metal from the casing. In the pink/white version, the keys are white, while the board area is pink brushed metal. The keys are a nice full size and have a good tactile clicky feel to them. There's no issues with knowing if your pressing the keys down or not. Feels and looks quality made. Much nicer than in the stock images online. The top area above the keyboard is not overdone with buttons, just one simple back-lit blue LED power button. This is also where the speakers are, however they are subtly hidden, so you don't necessarily realize this is where they are. The screen is bright, and I had no issues with dead pixels. It's a soft brightness, not a high gloss screen, so there are no problems with reflection.

The CD/DVD drive opens easily and is located on the right side of the laptop, along with 2 USB ports. On the left side of the laptop are the headphone jack, mic jack, an HDMI port and an additional USB port. This is also where the power cable plugs in (not the back) and the VGA port are. There is a memory card reader in it, located in the very front of the computer below the mouse-pad. There is a small subtle webcam located in the screen as well.The laptop if fairly light weight, at least compared to my 19inch ASUS desktop replacement PC. I like that it has a little weight to it, giving it some substance and not feeling like cheap plastic.

The Intel HD Graphics card holds it's own for basic online games and such. Extremely high end graphic intense games will need to have their resolution turned down a notch to play smoothly on this system. And example being Sims games run fine, however games like first person shooters will need more power. This has an integrated graphics card in it, not dedicated. The 2.1 GHz Intel Pentium B950 dual-core processor is similar to the Core i3, both being in the Sandy Bridge group of processors and both being duel core. However the B950 has Hyperthreading and Turbo Boost disabled, where as the i3 has them enabled, giving the i3 better performance stats. With the popularity of the i3 (and quad-core i5 and i7) processors right now, you may get a better price per performance getting a laptop with the B950 in it, like this one has. It still has more than enough power for everyday PC needs.

It comes with 4Gb of RAM installed, as of right now, plenty for most casual users needs. However it can EASILY be upgraded to 8GB, which I'm glad to see it can be expanded to that amount. The sticks of DDR3 RAM can even be bought here on Amazon. To know for certain which RAM will work best for your system, I suggest going to the Crucial website and using their "Crucial Memory Advisor Tool" to help guide you in explaining exactly which kind of RAM to buy, and how many sticks you need. The laptop has Bluetooth built in, meets Energy Star standards and has an ample 500 GB hard drive.

This laptop is nice system for the casual user and those who like basic and online games. Emailing, FaceBook, internet, shopping, writing documents, games and surfing the web are all done with ease. Watch DVD's, download pictures from memory cards, burn CDs, watching Netflix and other media type things are all smooth and download easily. I also like that the laptop came with system restore disks, a rare things these days. It has a very nice keyboard, a plus for those who type well or at higher speeds, and the brushed metal design helps make it sturdy and attractive at the same time. This system is great for casual users, youths, college students and I'm even thinking of picking another one up to give to my mother as a gift. It has enough power and appeal for a wide range of possible users.

From the moment I booted it up. Hell when I took it out the plastic the overall design was one of the best looking ultra thin Laptops out there!!! But out of everything other then looks and build quality Win8 is very responsive and easy to use, and It may take sometime to get used to but that only for a short period. I bought this laptop for my graphics design and something that can run Adobe Photoshop smoothly and it works like a champ and I'm very happy with the results for the price! I would diffidently recommend this to anyone that is looking for a nice big touch screen with a pretty smooth UI and fast processor at a reasonable price tag.
