I am very happy with my purchase, the laptop works great, loads fast, is functional for my requirements (administrative software management, accounting). I found it a little uncomfortable with the mouse because when writing sometimes place the cursor changes when you rub your hand over the surface, you could adjust the sensitivity and improve this point, browse the internet fine, operation is quiet and does not heat too much like other laptops, have available 2 USB 3.0 ports that have no taste because i dont haver such devices. I'm using Windows 8 for the first time and I have difficulties handling, but I understand that I will know as has happened with previous versions (although so far I like it :)) definitely would recommend this purchase

Got the computer in a timely mannor, thanks Amazon. Got it up and running, I was excited to try Windows 8. I was taking the leap. I like Windows 8 and after 5 minutes of getting used to the new interface it was working fine for me. We did buy this computer for our 14yr son and so it was his turn to have some fun. It worked well, very fast. Then day 2. He was playing his favorite game, and called me over because the computer was frozen. Could not do anything with it. Hard boot. No good. Used the "one key recovery" feature, to roll back to original settings. Came back up for a bit then, would not load Windows any more at all. Talked to the nice lady at Lenovo and she offered to send factory recovery disks at no charge. I will update this when we try to recover. Great computer, no so sure about the software, may need a few updates before Win 8 is perfect.

Update Dec 20th : Lenovo sent recovery disks. Attempted recovery with Lenovo on the phone to guide me. Did not work, the computer is going back to be repaired. Not too happy now, but cannot complain about the service, it was fine. I hope the machine works properly when it gets back, will update.

Update Jan 17th : Still waiting. They are replaceing the motherboard and do not have the correct one in stock at the repair center it is at, so they say, must come from China or something, not a very happy customer at this point.

Update Jan 29th : Lenovo is now not the company I would recomend

Update Feb 16th : Finally have the computer back. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers.

Really, how could you let this type of thing happen? I'm pretty sure out of the "12 people found this helpful" you probably lost a sale, maybe more than one. Bad business Lenovo.

My daughter absolutely LOVES this laptop. Very good quality and a very good brand. Lenovo used to be called IBM and is a fantastic choice for any computer need. This laptop is fast and has plenty of memory and processing speed to keep the average PC user very happy. If you want a computer for gaming, I would suggest a different model that has a little more power but I would still go with a Lenovo brand. Much cheaper than Alienware. The same laptop on another site was about $80 more because of the shipping and tax which Amazon did not charge! Saved me a lot of money and made my daughter and me VERY happy.

I did not buy this Lenovo G580 computer from Amazon, but I'd like everyone to see this before they buy one.

I bought this laptop from local Fry's store, picked it up mainly because of the price. It seemed offered good value. But after one year of usage, I know I was wrong. Here is why.

1. It is made of cheap parts. Well, it is cheap, but still works, right?

2. It is heavy and ugly, my boy complained all the time.

3. It has a bad design flaw. After half a year light usage, the hinge part pops open, it turns out it uses the same tiny screws as the bottom cover, it is not strong enough.

4. At 11 months, blue smoke came out of the vent, it is totally toasted

5. Their repair service is really really bad. Did not hear anything from them after 3 weeks sending Lenovo the computer for repair, finally called them, find myself talking to someone in India who does not know anything. 2 days later, got a notice they shipped the computer

6. The battery shipped back can run only half hour now, not the original battery anymore.

7. 2 days later, the AC power adapter retreated into the case, cannot use it anymore.

8. Talk to them again, they said it is out of warranty.

9. Complained to BBB, but Lenovo refused to replace it

So after one year, this computer is complete dead. My 2005 Sony Vaio is still working. If I had spent $100 more, I could have picked up a much better computer and still be using it happily.

Conclusion: DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER, DO NOT BUY ANY LENOVO COMPUTER

You will regret if you do.

As advertised. Arrived in perfect condition and on-time. Very high quality with an excellent keyboard and Display. Meets all Technical Specifications and has no discernible fan noise with it's smart fan technology. Excellent value for the price exceeding my expectations. Although Windows runs well, I have been using Linux almost exclusively for the past ten years (Currently Ubuntu 13.01) and it automatically installed and found all external and internal devices. Wish it had a hdmi interface but it does have a VGA output. As a long time IBM Thinkpad owner, Lenovo is to be commended for maintaining the look, feel, quality, excellent keyboard, and rugged construction Thinkpad is noted for having. I unequivocally recommend this product for general Home and Office usage. A very good laptop.

I cannot review this from a tech geek level but can say it is fast and easy to use. Love the lighted keyboard and all its other features. Glad I spent the money on it.

While it has Windows 8, which most people seem to hate, I don't mind it. No one likes change and all I did was look at some videos on how to navigate through it. Toshiba has one on their site and I also looked at a Windows 8 tutorial on YouTube. It is not as bad as people say, just have to take the time to learn how to use it.

I bought this for demanding software development under Linux and occasional gaming in Windows. It replaced my previous T60. It serves that purpose well, but certain small flaws prevent me from giving it 5 stars.

The matte high-resolution screen is pleasant to look at and at the higher backlight settings is quite usable in sunlight. The vertical viewing angles are awful, as is to be expected from a TN panel. The top left and (to a lesser extent) top right corners of the screen are noticeably darker than the rest of the screen. I'm not sure if this is a defect or a design flaw. I got no dead pixels.

The machine doesn't come with a color calibrator even though the default software asks you to calibrate your display. The thing on the palmrest is merely a slot for the calibrator in case you want to install one later.

The nVidia graphics card runs games well on moderate settings and resolutions. The resolution upscaling works pretty well so lower resolutions don't look excessively blocky. To my surprise, the bumblebee project allows me to use the nVidia card selectively under Linux without a hitch, and it automatically powers the card down when not in use. External displays don't yet work seamlessly under Linux though, apparently because the DP and VGA ports are wired through the nVidia card.

The new ThinkPad keyboard has a different feel compared to the old ones. I'd say it's slightly better. The new layout will likely take you a few weeks to adjust to. I dislike that PgUp/PgDown are now so far from Home/End, even though I can kind of see why one would want PgUp/PgDown to be close to the arrow keys.

The trackpoint is as good as ever, but the touchpad feels terrible with its default configuration in Windows. Linux had much better default settings, but Apple still has the best touchpads.

Under Linux the touchpad is by default so sensitive that it sometimes even misinterprets typing for taps. Setting FingerLow to 35 and FingerHigh to 40 seems to fix it or at least make it much more rare.

I got a 6 cell battery. I contacted the seller about the listing advertising a 9 cell battery and I assume they'll either fix the listing soon or start delivering 9 cell batteries. In any case they were very helpful.

The 6 cell battery yields a somewhat disappointing 2-4 hours on both OSes under light to moderate load with about 50% screen brightness. I imagine a 9 cell battery adds about 50% to that. Apparently a slice battery can also be purchased.

The fan is not as quiet as on my T60, and its sound has a higher pitch. It still doesn't sound nearly as bad as most cheap laptops though, and it's almost always silent or near-silent when idling. The machine stays very cool under light load and gets only moderately warm during gaming.

The speakers are serviceable but not good by any stretch, as is the case with most laptops.

Overall the machine feels solidly built, as a ThinkPad should. It's (intentionally) a little heavy but definitely still portable.

The battery locking mechanism looks like you could easily detach it by mistake, but the same was true for my previous ThinkPad and I accidentally detached it at most once in 7 years of use, so I'm not terribly concerned.

Other than the external display problem, Kubuntu LTS 12.04 has supported the hardware flawlessly so far.

This is a good machine and kind of long term investment. I was in between buying a Lenovo or Dell (M4500 series), then decided to go with Lenovo. I think, this is great deal for the given memory upgrade. You have to pay more for the same specification if you buy the laptop from Lenovo online website. I installed Linux Mint (Maya) and made it dual boot along with Windows. It works great with a few minor issues. I had a little problem with my order, the reseller sent me a laptop with different specifications than advertised accidentally. But, after exchanging several emails with them, they took the laptop back, fixed and resent to me. So, thank you guys, Jesse and Chris. I would have given 5 stars if they hadn't sent me the wrong laptop at the first time.

This Macbook was released in late 2006/early 2007. Although that may seem like a long time ago in computer-time, this Macbook still stays current. It comes loaded with features that many modern-day PC Laptops lack. It's fully compatible with all of Apple's latest programs and is still quick and nimble even today. My model is loaded with the Calistoga chipset and can support up to 3.2 GB of RAM (even though Apple will tell you that it will only take up to 2 GB). This RAM upgrade makes a huge difference with the overall speed of the system. I also upgraded mine to a 500 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive which drastically increased the system speed.

It's not a gaming computer. This model comes with 64 MB of shared Video Memory. It's more than enough to stream 720p videos, but not enough to enjoy any serious gaming. This is more of a media device anyway. The only cons that I can think of are that it does not include an SD Card Port and that it only has 2 USB ports. Both of these issues are minor and are the same for all Macbooks. I can confirm that it is fully compatible with the upcoming release of OS X Lion and runs it well. I use it in conjunction with my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 and couldn't be happier. If you're someone that is looking for a good laptop that can do business and entertainment related tasks, then this is the one that you want. It's not a gaming computer or the best choice for heavy graphic work. However it will do everything else with ease and is an awesome addition to my Mac collection.

*NOTE: To run OS X Lion, you must upgrade this to at least 2 GB of RAM. The included 1 GB is not enough to run the new system.

EDIT: After installing the latest update for OS X Lion, the system now recognizes all 4 GB of RAM! It would not recognize more than 3.2 GB in Snow Leopard.

Great laptop bought one from Mac a few years back still works great and our son wanted a MacBook but he's only thirteen so we didn't want to get a brand new one just in case he ruined it so we searched online for like two months and found this one. Didn't write a review until now because I wanted to give east coast macs a chance to make things right. Got the run around.

Microsoft office crashed and cd doesn't work and security is outdated. Researched east coast macs BBB gave them an F and

Ripped Offed reported scams with ebay as well as amazon. I should have suspected something when the computer was first delivered. It was basically delivered in a box with one piece of bubble wrap and had a fuuny smell like it was old sitting in a basement. They wanted me to send it back and me pay shipping but Amazon advised stop using it. I am now renting a computer until I hope my claim is resolved. The name of the guy I talked to at east coast name was Zac and his partner is Fernando and he was specifically named as the person who ripped people off along with his side kick. Googel East Coast Macs and you can read for yourselves. I also wrote this review so others can not be ripped offed through a reputable company like Amazon.

I will try to provide potential future consumers with an accurate and thorough review of this computer.

The Apple MacBook notebook offered for sale on this Amazon catalog page presents a good value for the money. Of course, this is an older model Apple product, having been released and sold approximately at retail stores in 2007 and 2008.

As such, it is reasonable that one can expect it to have some cosmetic signs of previous use (for instance, some peeling/cracking to the edges of the palmrest is a famous and common issue on the original white MacBook models), and to be of different appearance from what Apple is currently selling through its Apple Store outlets. Apple no longer manufactures any portable notebook in a white-colored plastic body (having since moved on to the 'aluminum' colored "unibody" design).

All this being said, the average consumer should still find this to be a nice looking computer, and it is capable of running the large majority of the software that is out there today for the Apple Macintosh platform (as of the time of my writing this review, late 2012/early 2013)-probably greater than 99% of what is available today.

This machine runs Snow Leopard, which offers a high level of compatibility both with Mac software products from earlier in the decade (i.e., the PowerPC era circa 2002-2006/7), all the way up to recent software releases like productivity suites such as Microsoft Office 2011, iWork '09, iLife '11, as well as serving as an above-average to good platform for Photoshop CS4 and CS5 and CS5.5, Logic Pro / Logic Studio and some light video work and editing with Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Studio 3. (None of these additional software products is included with the device, aside from the operating system).

For the software all users can appreciate, the latest versions of iTunes, Safari, FireFox, Chrome, and Skype all run on this model.

It can even play some not-too-3D-graphics-intensive games like the popular Minesweeper and WoW respectably enough, limited only by the use of an Intel-based integrated graphics chipset.

Amazon 'on-demand' streaming video (currently Adobe Flash based), YouTube (both Adobe Flash and HTML5 based), Google Video (Adobe Flash or HTML5), Netflix (through the downloadable Microsoft Silverlight plug-in) and Hulu (Adobe Flash) streaming work quite well on this machine, although you may wish to add more RAM or limit the number of applications you are multitasking with if you are intending to have HD level video output with these streaming services (720p grade quality seems to be the upper limit on this machine for these services).

Facebook applications depending on Adobe Flash also run very well on this model in my personal experience. You can watch standard video DVDs, and burn audio discs and data CDs. It has a built in 'iSight' webcam (approximately 1.3MP resolution) and microphone for video chatting or Skyping.

This MacBook can be expanded up to 4GB of RAM (it uses DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM sticks; use 256MB/512MB/1GB/2GB PC2-5300 or PC2-5400 modules for best compatibility); it comes default from the manufacturer with 1GB of RAM, so there is still some potential room to grow. It can handle any 2.5" SATA hard drive from the usual 60GB/80GB/120GB/160GB suspects all the way up to the current 1.0+ terabyte models (if you should feel the need to upgrade). There is no SD or media card slot on this model. The LCD is a glossy finish widescreen display supporting up to 1280x800 resolution. Mini-DVI video output, digital headphones out, digital microphone/line-in, 1 IEEE1384 Firewire port, 2 USB 2.0-compliant ports, built-in gigabit wired ethernet and high-speed wireless 'Airport Extreme' networking round out the set of features on this laptop.

This machine does not run Mountain Lion, but Snow Leopard, as said before, can run the majority of everything important out there software-wise at the moment, and is among the most consistent and reliable releases of Mac OS X that Apple has thus far released.

If you can live knowing you are not running the latest model (which may be hard for some users, given the designer brand nature of the Apple name), instead appreciating the still high level of software compatibility this model allows and recognizing the general elegance and snappiness of the Apple software interface [even on an older model], and if you can live with small cosmetic shortcomings given the age of the device, this is a *more than fair* value that should get most users through at least two years of good use.

An additional plus comes from the Intel architecture of the CPU on this MacBook; you can use BootCamp, or, if you prefer, VMWare / Parallels, to run Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 as well as any PC portable with similar hardware features.

I purchased from eSales Connect. Extremely fast shipping. Paid less than $250 total for the Macbook and shipping. It came with Microsoft Office already installed. Great customer service. The Macbook had minor defects, I mean minor. Screen is perfect, keyboard perfect, trackpad perfect, dvd burner perfect. The only thing that I noticed that I will have to replace soon is the battery because it holds only about 2 1/2 hour of charge but I found the battery online for about $40, so not bad. I waited a couple of weeks before reviewing this product because I really wanted to test it out. My uses for it include: school, programming, and streaming/watching videos. For all those uses I can't complain, it does it all just fine. I might purchase another just because of the quality and price. Hope this review helps!

This toshiba notebook computer features an Intel CPU, either a i5 or and i7 (like mine) processor which greatly enhances the response time of the laptop. I prefer the i7 CPU over the i5. The processor also increases the computers abililty to multitask so that you can download programs without having to deal with a slow internet.

This R950 laptop also comes with a 500 or 620 GB hard drive that is perfect for those of you who love to have lots of space on the computer. There is plenty of space so that you can store all of your music, photos, and movies while still having enough space for downloads.

There is a CD/DVD drive that plays all of your cds and dvds perfectly. This drive also burns cds so that you can share your favorite music with your friends and family.

This toshiba laptop computer also features a 15.6 inch screen that includes a high resolution and a high definition picture. With this great screen you can enjoy watching your favorite movies in high definition and the 15.6 inch screen is plenty big enough to satisfy your viewing experience.

You can easily adjust the brightness and color settings to your personal preference. With all of these features the screen always appears smooth and clear. This laptop runs Windows 7 without a hitch. Druing the year I have had I haven't had any crashes. The operating system purrs along happily.

I use Microsoft Office 2010 on my laptop with 8 GB of ram. That's probably and overkill.

You can run the latest Autocad of any other Cad on the i7 version with 16 GB memory. Users have reported excellent performance with this software on configured laptops.

I remember the days when Toshiba introduced the P5 and P10 laptops years ago. Compared to days laptop from Toshiba, they were woefully underpowered for the average business user. Toshiba has made great strides in manufaturing the R950 laptop.

The only problem I jave noticed is the hdd life. If you do not have the hdd protections software installed and you move the laptop while it's on, you're asking for trouble with the hdd. It seems like that's the only week point I can come up with.

Oh yeah, and the human factor. If you leave a pen on the keyboard and shut the lid, guess what will happen? Yep, cracked screen.

Oh no, you're thinking, that's expensive.

The pleasant surprise here is that if you take to an authorised repait centre it will only cost around $240. That's value.

Thinkpad T420 14" 320GB 4GB Reviews

I bought this laptop for school in late summer 2011. Specs are as follows: 14" Core i3 320GB HDD, 4GB Ram, no extras, the absolute basic model. Paid $640 w/shipping and taxes. I use both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, both of which operate excellent (with a few minor tweaks in Ubuntu). This laptop boots fast, both operating systems can be booted in less than a minute, with Windows a bit faster. Holds a charge for 5+ hours while doing basic tasks like internet, word processing, Audacity, etc. Its nice to have a laptop that isn't tethered to the outlet all the time.

This laptop has a high quality build. The screen hinges feel very solid, no creaking in the body, and the keyboard is very tactile and comfortable. The keyboard also has the little red trackpoint in the middle and two extra mouse clickers so you can navigate with one hand (A great feature!). I would purchase again in a heartbeat, this laptop is light years better than my previous laptop, an HP Pavilion.

My only complaints are that the widescreen doesn't fill the front of the lid, giving a feeling of smallness, and there is no HDMI port.

I don't review products often, but I can honestly say I wouldn't want anyone to pay for a more expensive laptop with fewer features. If you are a student, professional, or an avid home user, do yourself a favor, and buy this laptop. I've used my girlfriend's Macbook Pro, and the Lenovo has as good if not better performance and build, and is about half the cost.

Pros:

Sturdy build withstands constant backpack travel. Love the rubberized matte finish it hides oily hand prints and feels nice while providing grip.

Good keyboard. Lenovo is pretty much the only option if chiclet keys aren't your thing. This one is not as good as a desktop keyboard, but comfortable to type on without making errors. Trackpoint works well although I usually use the touchpad. Some don't like the bumpy texture but I prefer it. Touchpad is responsive. Fingerprint scanner works well.

Good performance / power compromise. I opted for Core i3, HD3000, and upgraded to the 1600x900 display (the cost was reasonable to add some extra workspace). Without heavy gaming, the i7 didn't make much sense but if you can afford it then paying a little extra for an i5 might be worth it. Later upgraded to 8GB RAM and an Intel 80GB SSD for kicks.

Internet/office any recent machine should be fast with these, and the T420 is no exception.

Video playback Handles most HD files, but at very high bitrates will stutter for a moment. I suspect this has more to do with the integrated GPU than the i3.

Gaming It won't run Crysis on high settings but older titles I've tested Civilization IV, Unreal Tournament run fluently. Deus Ex 3 even runs... at about 3fps.

Battery life with wireless on is about 5 hours, almost as good as a 10 inch Atom netbook I used to own.

Easy expansion. Open a panel with one screw to install memory, mSATA or HDD. One mSATA and one memory slot come unoccupied.

Built-in speakers are actually not bad at all.

VERY fast shipping from Lenovo.

Cons:

Placement of optical drive button is problematic when using the laptop in certain positions (laying down). It will constantly be opened by accident and can become quite annoying. Fortunately I don't often use optical disks and swapped the drive with an aftermarket optical to SATA adapter.

Too much bezel particularly above/below the screen. Why not either make the screen fit the available area or reduce the size of the machine?

No HDMI? I know DisplayPort is better, but would it have been much trouble to include one HDMI port? VGA is available also.

No USB 3.0 not actually that important for now, but again, how much would it cost to do this for a machine that may see years of use?

Removed bay battery capability for T420 / T420i? This makes zero sense and I'm not paying hundreds more for the T420S.

Overall a fine choice for a student or business machine that is built to last.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad laptop, and probably one of the better values for this price. However, if you expect the kind of quality thinkpads used to have, you will probably be as disappointed as I am (Hence the 2 stars--I just expected a no-hassle product).

It is no longer a tank-like structure, built to last forever. The keyboard feels flimsy: I have had problems with the space bar after a few weeks (I have to hit it right in the middle) and the arrow keys felt flimsy and cheap from day one, as do the mouse buttons. Hope they will last, but I am pessimistic. The volume buttons on top of the keyboard are also often on strike.

In addition, the computer is used as a marketing device: Every now and then notifications pop up urging the customer to buy more lenovo stuff. Annoying.

This is not so much a critique of Lenovo, as it is a critique of laptops in general: Over the last decade, the quality has declined spectacularly, and I was hoping Lenovo would resist this trend. Before this thinkpad, I owed the ideapad y430 (bought about 2 yrs ago), and, in terms of the keyboard, this feels like a downgrade, although it's a thinkpad.

I am sorry to say that I deeply regret to have bought this laptop. After only 2 months, it stopped working (I came to the conclusion that it's a faulty hard drive, after my own research). Gateway support sucks BIG TIME, all they can do is annoying you with their constant "don't worry miss, we will help you with this issue", but in the end, all they do is telling you to send in your laptop. Horrible I have to say, and after talking to three customer service reps, and many "don't worry" statements, I was really fed up.

I bought this laptop for my daughter who is being home schooled and who's doing online classes, and since we're traveling a lot, losing her laptop after only 2 months was just unbelievable. We were on our way to Europe, so we had to send in the laptop to Texas, from Canada, and now we are not able to get the repaired laptop until we get back home. I can't blame Gateway for us traveling for several months of course, but the fact that their products are faulty is just a big turn off, and what was bad for me, that I only found out that Gateway = Acer, after the laptop failed, was even worse. If I had known this before, I would have never bought this laptop, because I had two Acer laptops before, and both of them died within a short time, and unfortunately, since we're traveling all over the world, we were out of warranty.

So do yourself a favor, go buy yourself another laptop, and save yourself the headaches with this brand.

It had a small window that came up every time the system was booted for no apparent reason, couldn't find me, fan made noise, and other issues. Bought this for my son for college and he loves it.

Pros: 4th gen I7 processor; excellent graphics and better-than-expected performance from the NVIDIA graphics card while gaming; a relatively fast boot probably helped along by the 24 gb ssd; 1 tb of storage; 8 gb memory; light weight considering the size of the screen; and a touchscreen display that makes using Windows 8 almost tolerable, and it looks amazing -so good that I would have assumed it was 1080p (but it's not). [CORRECTION: As stated in the update, the display resolution is 1920x1080.]

Cons: It runs a little warm when gaming, so we bought a cooling pad; the bottom of the case could be a little better quality of plastic; would prefer the hdd be 7200 rpm instead of 5400. All of which are very minor issues. My only significant complaint is the keyboard. The chiclet keyboard feels cheap and there's something about the layout that makes it easy, for me, to lose my position and strike the wrong key. My son, the laptop's primary user, doesn't notice it. So it may be a generational thing or just my problem. And the backlighting on the keys is lackluster at best. I would prefer Asus to have installed black keys and some kind of rubber gasket to prevent light from bleeding out of the sides of key. Those two changes alone would have turned the feature from worse than useless to excellent.

If the option were available to me, I would probably have given this laptop 4.5 stars because of the keyboard, and really only because of that. As a writer, it would take me some time to adjust to this keyboard. But my son thinks it's 5 stars all the way, so 5 stars it is. Overall, this is an excellent value that you will find hard to beat. Quality components, I7 Haswell, solid graphics card, touchscreen, beautiful display, nice fit and finish... It's a win!

Note: This has nothing to do with the computer but avoid the Microsoft app store like the plague. It's a mess and many of the apps are buggy. You're much better off downloading and installing software the old-school way. Skype, for example, was a nightmare. I ended up uninstalling the app that came from the MS Store and downloaded the Win7 version of Skype in order to make it work properly. Had to do this with a number of applications.

REVIEW UPDATED:

So I just went through a form with Amazon to do a full refund after a month with the computer. This is due to the requirements for the computer. I could not justify the price for what it is. For schoolwork, it is just too big. For gaming, it is not good enough for the price. This computer was the envy of my friends and I truly did love it and will be sad to see it go away...

I am going to take my money and invest it into a very cheap and heavily discounted Asus X202 touch laptop or similar laptop for school, use the excess money to get two solid state drives, one for my new laptop and one for my desktop. I will also get new ram for my desktop as well as a next gen graphics card that so far is future proof. The rest of the money will be thrown towards a PS4 or Xbox One and will take a significant chunk out of them making it easier to get them when they release.

This way I get a computer that is more practical for school, and two very powerful game systems that blow this laptop out of the water.

I will truly miss it, it is a great laptop and I recommend it to anybody with a much bigger disposable income. I'm truly sad to see it go.

Oh, also it had battery trouble and would not keep charge after a month of use. Thats just one more reason.

BELOW IS MY OLDER REVIEW:

Ok, so for about the past 3 months I've been researching various laptops at around 1k for my first year of college.

This was the first one to have everything I wanted-

4th gen Haswell Quad Core

Good enough battery life

Touch Screen at 1920x1080

A good enough dedicated graphics card (gt750m)

The reason i give this 3 stars are because of various flaws I found with it.

The first one I ordered got here in a day. It was a amazing computer, well built, good audio, great screen, battery life. The nvida card was giving me trouble and after a session of Crysis 2, the gt750m's driver reported error code 043, which essentially means it died. I sent it back and got a new one same day from amazon and starting dealing with new issues.

My new issues were the 5400rpm hard-drive and the networking card.

The HDD is just too slow for my tastes, I've grown up on 7200rpm emachines and have a OCZ solid state drive in my desktop. it is simply too slow and I plan on replacing it if I can stay within warranty.

The Networking card (Qualcom Artheros Ar9485wb-eg) is also really slow. It takes a full minute to download 1000kb of data. Both the original and the replacement had this issue. i use either wired now or use a usb wifi adapter. Again if I can manage to stay within warranty I will replace it with something better.

Now for the better stuff.

I really like the gt750m nvidia card, it can handle most games at the same graphics of today's 7th gen consoles. The most taxing game I have are Planetside 2, it is playable in big battles on very low settings at full resolution but at any other settings it is iffy. I can manage 40-50 frames at these settings. I played left 4 dead 2 and that was eaten up. The optimus technology automatically switched to the HD 4600 integrated card in the cpu when I played Halo Combat Evolved at Maximum settings in a close quarters unlimited grenades and rockets 16 player match, the integrated card chewed it up. I haven't tried Crysis 2 on the replacement model yet.

Build quality feels like a very fine aluminum, almost like plastic but very solid, I like it.

Screen is the best I have ever had, it is beautiful.

Keyboard, I didn't like the fact it is silver but it is easy to type on and although the backlit bleeds a lot, it does make it easier to see the actual keys and not just the letters.

Mouse pad is the best I have used. Does not mess up your cursor if you accidentally touch it when typing papers like on some notebooks.

Audio is good for a notebook, the additional subwoofer is weak and I forgo it for my cheap gogroove speakers.

Battery life may sound average at 5 hours but it is very generous, when it says 3 hours and 19 minutes it really does mean that much time is left if you keep using how you are. Other notebooks seem to have a less accurate timing.

Not too much bloatware, easily removed within five minutes.

All in all i give it 3 stars because my first model failed and it has a slow HDD and crappy network card.

Pros:

Great mousepad

gt750m handles modern games well and is capable at low settings select next gen titles

I recently decided to replace my four year old desktop system with a laptop.

Given that this was going to be my main computer, I needed a machine that had a good amount of grunt for video conversion and other processor intensive tasks. This machine has the new Haswell i7-4700HQ processor, which has impressive performance with relatively good power consumption.

I am an occasional but enthusiastic gamer, so I needed reasonably good graphics enough to run Civ V, Simcity, Skyrim and whatever is released next at mid settings. Obviously GPU is always a trade off between price, performance and power consumption, but I think the GT750M strikes a reasonable balance between the three. You will have to make your own call, though. If you want more performance, look at the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal Dusk Black) which has 2 GT750M's in SLI mode. If you don't do much 3D gaming, an ultrabook or convertible with Intel HD4400 or 4600 integrated graphics (there are quite a few around to choose from) might suit you better.

The screen is beautiful. As screens get better on smartphones and tablets, I find the 768p screens on cheaper laptops hard to look at. Spoiled I guess. The screen is glossy but not as reflective as some I have seen and the viewing angles are excellent.

Not everyone loves touchscreens but it was a must for me. Again, using a lot of touchscreens on other devices I find touch a really natural way of interacting with the user interface, even where it hasn't been specifically designed for touch. Windows 8 is only half the product on a non-touch screen and it seems inevitable that more apps and operating systems will incorporate touch in the future. If you don't want the touchscreen, the ASUS N550JV-DB71-CA Multimedia Notebook (15.6-inch, i7-4700HQ, 8GB-DDR3, 1TB HDD, GT 750M-2G, BD-ROM, Windows 8) is the same laptop without the touchscreen. The trackpad is good too, although I am not a fan of the hidden buttons that everyone has copied from Apple. Initially I found that tapping on the trackpad to click was unresponsive but you can adjust the sensitivity of this. The keyboard is very good in terms of key size and travel, although I would have appreciated a bit of separation between the main keyboard and the number pad so I could easily feel where the enter key was. Frankly I wouldn't have been too fussed if they had left out the number pad altogether.

In terms of size and appearance, this laptop has a very high quality build. I don't care much what my laptop looks like but I do want one that doesn't creak or move while you use it and this certainly fits that bill. The 15.6" form factor is pretty hefty I would've preferred a 14" version but as it was a desktop replacement I was not too worried about the size or weight. If you plan to carry it around a lot, I would recommend you go for something smaller.

While I've said I don't care what my laptop looks like, one thing I do like about this laptop is that it is gaming-capable without looking like a gaming laptop. I find those flashy, neon-lit, tattoo-sporting gaming laptops ridiculous but unfortunately this is almost the most capable gaming laptop I have found without the bling. Even the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal Dusk Black) (which looks like the natural next step up from this in the gaming performance terms) has a garish red keyboard which I would feel silly using to do my tax return.

Another important factor in choosing this laptop was warranty. I live in Hong Kong and laptops are generally much cheaper on Amazon than in the stores here, so I wanted a good international warranty. The rules about international warranties vary wildly between manfacturers, but Asus's international warranty is excellent. By contrast Acer (who have a similar model to this laptop) do not offer a true international warranty, so in my circumstances I had to rule them out of consideration entirely.

In terms of shortcomings, this laptop is much better with a decent SSD to replace the supplied HDD. I went for the Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE250BW. Luckily it is pretty easy to replace the HDD armed with a Torx#5 screwdriver. One of the advantages of a slightly bigger laptop like this over an ultrabook is that everything is user accessible and replaceable the RAM, the HDD, the wifi card, the battery, even the optical drive.

A bigger shortcoming is that, unlike several of its competitors, this laptop does not have provision for an mSATA SSD. This means you cannot install a 64GB or 128GB SSD as an OS drive and keep the HDD for data. You have to use one drive, and that means being faced with a choice between a smallish but fast SSD and a big but slow HDD. In my case, I have a NAS for storing data, so it was less of an issue for me. Also USB 3.0 (all the USB ports on this laptop are USB 3.0) makes external drives very fast.

I really didn't identify any other issues with this machine. All in all I am one happy owner.

In my dreams I would quite like this CPU/GPU combination in a convertible form factor a touchscreen is more useful again if you can fold it flat and use it like a tablet. But at the moment, none of the convertibles have a dedicated GPU or even Intel HD5100 graphics (which approaches the GT750M for performance). Maybe next year for that.

PS: I noticed that some of the specs for this machine on Amazon and a lot of other online retailers were wrong. Amazon seems to have corrected them now, but to make clear:

* No model of this laptop has an mSATA drive or any place to put one.

* This model has a 1080p IPS touchscreen. The DB71 model has a 1080p IPS non-touchscreen.

* This model has a DVD-RW drive. Some Asian and European models have a Bluray/DVD combo drive or a Bluray-RW drive.

* This has 8GB of RAM, two 4GB modules. Some Asian models come with 16GB RAM.

* This model has a 1 year international warranty and 1 year accidental damage protection (in the US & Canada only). In other countries, Asus offers a 2 year international warranty but no accidental damage protection.

* The keyboard is backlit with 3 levels of light.

One final thing: if you are shipping this (or any) laptop to or through Hong Kong, you will need to get hold of the Material Safety Data Sheet for the laptop battery. For this laptop, the battery part no is C41-N550 and the MSDS is available by telephoning Asus Hong Kong. Do not try Asus USA, they will not know what you are talking about!

First off, I bought this laptop from another vendor, and cannot comment on Amazon's shipping or service. However, after owning this product for about a month, I can comment on the laptop.

Pros:

-Top-of-the-line 4th gen Core i7 processor

-Brand new, dedicated video card

-absolutely massive hard drive

-keyboard w/ backlight

-Full HD touchscreen display with IPS technology (very wide viewing angles)

-excellent build quality

Cons:

-hard drive is only 5400 RPM

-keyboard backlight is not perfect

-gets a little warm with heavy use

-it doesn't make me pancakes

Conclusion:

This really is an excellent laptop, especially for the price. For a little more than $1000, it offers you a slew of high-end components inside a well-built, attractive casing. For some more money, you could get a laptop with a higher resolution screen (Macbook Pro Retina) or with slightly better components (Razer Blade) but there's really no reason to unless you're a hardcore gamer or have a need for ultra-high resolution displays. The touchscreen makes Windows 8 infinitely more enjoyable, and makes me wonder why people ever complained about it. The hard drive, while massive, is a bit slow, and seems to occasionally bottleneck the system during some intensive tasks. However, during most use cases, this is a non-issue, and is easily rectified( Just buy yourself a faster hard drive). It does get a little warm when under heavy use, and may require a lap desk or a cooling pad to remain comfortable at times, but again, the problem is easily fixed. The keyboard backlight is a nice touch, with one minor issue. At certain angles, light leaks out from underneath the keys, making them hard to see. But, when one is sitting normally, this isn't an issue. The keyboard itself is wonderful, and I'm not sure why people have complained about it. I suppose it's a preference thing.

Overall it's an amazing laptop for the price, offering an excellent mix between build quality, aesthetics, and power.

Can potentially get a little warm depending on use (I've noticed that if I keep the screen brightness down and setting it on powersaver mode it doesn't get very hot). A minor issue if you are like me and put it on your lap and chest while laying.

Wish the wireless card was dual band and supported 5ghz, but this can be fixed buy purchasing a ~$30 dual band internal wireless card

They skimped out on the webcam a little but this is fixable and not a huge issue.

Potential Issues:

*** TOUCH PAD *** I had to send my first one back because the right corner of my touch pad was incredibly hard to press for right-clicking, I went to microcenter to double check if their display model had this issue and it did not so I knew I needed to return mine.

The second model I received fixed this issue, but as other reviewers have noted the touch pad can lift slightly above the bezel in the top right corner. Perhaps ASUS will address this in the near future.

Windows 8 I think windows 8 is growing on me, start up is super fast, the search is powerful but I am not too fond of the way apps run without a close button. To get around this, apps like chrome need to be re-run in desktop mode.

But I'm currently trying Windows 8.1 Preview and I like it even more, It fixes many of my previous gripes and allows you to go back to desktop mode by default with the familiar windows 7 interface. The search is made even more powerful.

All in all, this is an awesome laptop. Design is beautiful, functionality is nearly flawless, and it is quite feature rich. Pretty much all of the cons can be fixed. At roughly ~$1000 it was a steal for me! Keep it up ASUS!

The first one I received had a problem with the software which caused error messages and prevented back-up of data. The screen turned off for a few seconds if I touched it. A wireless device could not connect to the laptop via its ad-hoc hotspot, and HP will not help with connectivity problems. Returns are allowed within one month of receiving it, so I kept working with HP to solve the problems. I rated it 2 stars.

HP replied to my comments above and offered help (again), but they still couldn't do anything.

Then I asked Amazon to send me a replacement, which they did, and it works GREAT! Amazon paid for all shipping, and they let me keep the first one until after I received the replacement! Amazon customer service is Amazing.

After one year I am still very happy with this laptop, and happy with HP. The computer works very well, using a slow DSL internet connection, it is fast enough to watch videos. Any software problems are fixed online by HP, free for as long as I own it.

We use this laptop for a variety of uses, and we love it!!. We purchased it last fall and have had no problems whatsoever and use it on a daily basis!!. It has excellent quality for watching movies as well!!

I would highly recommend this laptop!. I have a dell desktop computer that I have had nothing but issues with......so this has been a major improvement!!. A computer that actually works well!! ;)

I've had this computer for a few days now and I really like it. The display is very bright (actually had to turn it down at night) and clear. Processing speed is great and the 1gb of dedicated (yes I said dedicated) graphics memory is more than I could ask for from an off the shelf computer. ProtectSmart feature for the hard drive is a nice addition (senses if laptop is being dropped and locks the hard drive).

I just wish that it had a Blu-ray player and integrated Bluetooth that I saw on some lower priced models. See the review at

So far this computer has done everything I have asked of it. One thing of note is to make sure your programs you are going to install are 64bit compatible. I downloaded some demo software and found out it wouldn't work.

Also this model is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 if purchased between June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010.
