The laptop itself is in great condition. I didn't see any scratches or dents. Everything on the system works great (wireless, cd/dvd,usb). Almost like having a brand new laptop. The only downside was that the battery was not able to hold any charge (4 stars). Traded in my junk laptop and paid $25 for a brand new battery. if you're interested in trading/selling, find a place near you that restors and sells computers.

Overall; great buy. For future buyers, enjoy, and have fun. I know I am.

Purchased for my husband as a Christmas present. The worst product I have ever received.

Product came with a dead battery and the sound card lasted approx 1 month when only using it once a week to skype with a family member. Completely dissapointed in this product and their customer service. I called customer service tthey advised I would need to pay to have it repaired. They felt it was my issue not theirs since it was over a month. Even after I purchased as a Christmas gift. The amount they wanted me to pay was more than 1/2 of the amount I paid for the laptop.

Would not purchase through this company again!!

I purchased a Lenovo hoping that the quality of their product would be better than previous laptops I've had in the past. I am unfortunately disappointed.

I purchased a brand new Y470P from Lenovo and it gave me consistent freezing issues. I tried reinstalling the OS, I called up tech support and did everything they recommended, and had to send the computer in for them to repair. Not only did they not repair it, but it's in worse condition than it was before. After getting the computer back from them, I noticed that they replaced my graphics card with a different brand card, either hoping I wouldn't notice or doing it by mistake. It still has the 'Radeon Graphics' sticker but now it's NVIDIA on the inside. That in itself isn't a biggie. I went online and found that the one they replaced it with is marginally worse. However, the problems that I'm experiencing now are worse than before. It fails to go into sleep mode or hibernation by itself now, so I have to manually do it and hope that it does it successfully. No more closing the lid and being on my way, I now have to babysit it to make sure it goes to sleep. If I ever leave it unattended and unplugged I come back to find that the battery is entirely drained since it failed to go into sleep mode by itself. The fan speed is always high, making it noisy constantly, unlike how it was quiet before. (and I checked to make sure the cooling settings were the same)

Now I have to wait until the end of the semester to have it 'fixed' again. (I would do it now but I'm a CS major and need to have a computer to do my homework -not having it for two weeks isn't an option)

EDIT (11/01/2012): I'm changing the review from a 1 star to 4 star because Lenovo gave me a new computer to replace the faulty one. The old one started blue screening so I had to have it replaced. The new one isn't refurbished and it's a newer, better version of the one that I had, so I'm happy.

Everything I hoped this laptop. It's fast, play decent games at high settings and it didnt get hot to the point where you can use it as a heater like the Asus G60vx. The quality is great, the speakers are WOWWWWWW I mean it's sounds like ur in a theater with the srs premium sound. It has fan control which is pretty nifty

and it's also small so it can be portable instead of carrying a 15.6 inch screen or 17. It lagged a few times because I probably installed some kind of software but it went. Overall, it's the best computer I had thus far and it last like a hour and half in gaming and it also last 5 hours if you put it in energy saver (basic browsing, Microsoft office, etc...) The wifi signal is great, the screen is gorgeous and it's also hybrid which means you switch beywen 2 graphic cards (Intel HD 3000 AND Nvidia 550 GT). The graphics are phenomenal and fast. Just make sure you update it and your good to go. Just buy it!!!! You will love it :) don't install or update all drivers all in one session! That's a Noo Noo!!!

I purchased a Y470 directly off of Lenovo website in July 2011. The config is Intel Core i7 processor, 8Gb of RAM, 750GB HD, NVIDIA GT550M, and Win 7 Home Premium. I paid ~$950+Tax which I was very happy with given the config (you could get a similar laptop from Vaio or Apple for $800 more than that back then). Of course these days computers are much cheaper, but I'm writing this review in hope that those who read it get an idea of a Lenovo product.

I've been using this computer since October 2011 (although I purchased it in July, I didn't get it until then because Lenovo would only ship it within the US and I was in Europe back then). I have done pretty much everything with it (office, internet, gaming, data analysis (MATLAB), CUDA computing, etc) and it never had a problem. I have played Crysis 2 at very acceptable frame rates on Medium and to a lesser degree Maximum (not Ultra) graphics settings. I have also played Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed and NFS: The Run. All run generally smoothly, but of course in computationally intensive scenes the frame rate drops which is what you would expect from a GT550M GPU.

One of the greatest things about this laptop was its battery life: I literally have used it for 13 hours straight on battery power (of course with WiFi off, minimum screen brightness, etc). But the thing with the battery is not its capacity, it's the utility that Lenovo provide you that beautifully takes care of energy consumption. However, the downside of the utility is that it's not available for Linux (they have been upgrading the utility I believe so there might be a version that runs on Linux too these days). So on Linux I would get only like 3 hours of battery power normally. If you use the laptop on battery with maximum demand (like playing Crysis 2 on Maximum graphics settings) you only get like 1-1.5 hours of battery, suggesting that the power management utility is phenomenal (as it can extend the battery life to up to 12-13hrs).

I am very happy with what I have gotten from Lenovo (given the price) so I would get more Lenovo laptops in the future.

I have had my laptop for about a year now and I still love it. I have since upgraded it to Windows 8 and installed a SSD to run the OS alongside with the provided HD. Runs fast, battery lasts all day for school. Runs everything from adobe products to office without a problem.

I've had this laptop since Feb of last year, have the ruby red and that's rather daring when you're straight but seriously it has quite a decent finish (if not the best)

I have a 9 cell battery which makes the laptop a little heavier and I do regret getting it and that's not because I paid extra but it's because laptops are plugged in all the time. I've traveled many places with my laptop.

I strongly advise getting this laptop with a 2 year warranty. The adapter has died on me once. (Dell sent a new adapter out in 2 days)

The brightness on my LCD became really dim and I didn't bother because I was using it on the HDMI port but I asked for an engineer to come out. He replaced the LCD and now it's bright. He also managed to remove a memory stick I somehow managed to get stuck in the slot with a lot of ease.

The customer service is friendly, polite, professional and they're always on time. I would give Dell an 8 as far as Customer experience is concerned. However, there is a lot of problem getting your service tag recognized in America because they'll keep transferring you from department to department until you end up at a department which is closed *Warranty* I got the laptop in India and getting service in NEW YORK requires a bit of pedaling.

The touch pad is not the best in the world. I've connected my laptop to a giant TV and sit on my couch with a blue tooth keyboard and mouse and use it so I don't have to use the touch pad which likes to become all hot. A slight trickle sometimes sends the mouse into a frenzy.

If my laptop is on Hibernate and I bring it back to life, the touchpad used to go bonkers during the first few weeks. I never use Dell Media Direct because I have something we call the VLC Media player. Running DVDs is just fine. The wireless has given me some problems, often refusing to recognize the available network and often dropping the service. I don't know if the operating system is to blame for it but I have had some tussles.

The speakers are some of the worst I have ever heard. I have Harman Kardon SoundSticks which produce boombastic sound. The video/photo camera is above satisfactory and takes some really good photos. The software is easy and has enough options for fiddlers. The in built mic is effective but could be better.

A good thing about the Inspiron 1525 is how the front has two headphone jacks and one mic jack. A big plus here if you're two watching a film.

Some good things about the laptop is the stuff it comes with. PC restore is a convenient option if your laptop has gone bonkers or if you have been hit with malware/spyware/virus. You get very good Creative earphones. You get this cloth to wipe your laptop which you lose. The operating system cds, the restore dvd and some Roxio I would never bother with. My laptop had 160GB hard drive and I got it with 2GB ram.

I have installed an extra gig of RAM but it has only elevated my problems and I have a lot of blue screens now. I get a blue screen once every three days. It is quite annoying. The build quality is mediocre considering it sometimes acts funny if you lift it from the bed and place it on your lap.

Windows Vista is a good experience. I use all four usb ports at most times. One for my ipod, two for my external hard drives and the fourth for my wireless keyboard/mouse.

Overall, this laptop was a fun experience at first but I'm the kind of guy who uses his laptop every day for many hours. Is it for a power enthusiast like me? Maybe not. Am I still overall happy with it? It gets the job done. I should maybe not place it on the carpet all the time but seriously it's a blessing because the HDMI port works so well after the video driver software update.

I like Dell because of quality, they're far from perfect but for how much I paid I don't think it was a bad deal.

This Dell computer has a big problem. Dell knows about it and has done nothing to own up to it. The plug in that is connected to the main board easily cracks making it impossible to charge your computer. It is poor engineering from the get go and quite costly to repair($145 to install a $5 part). When my computer stopped charging I bought a new adapter, then a new battery, then downloaded the most recent BIOS. When I went up on the net to see if anyone else was having this problem I found 100's of people with the same problem. Some of them were banging the logo and getting some results, most of them as frustrated as I am.

Again: DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! YOU WILL BE SORRY

I've had two Dell laptops. On both of them the mousepad stopped working within months. (Why I bought the second laptop I dont know.) On the 1525, everything seems to have fallen apart. Even worse, it didn't come with driver disks or any of the oem software on disks. Funny thing is, Dell advertises this as a benefit. Huh? Now it's impossible to reinstall the os system because you can't get it online anymore. I will not buy a Dell again.

I have been buying Dell computers for the past couple years and I think its about time for a change. Overall, I've been satisfied with their performance but I seem to have recurring hardware issues.

I've noticed that almost every Dell I've owned has had CD drive issues. In my Inspiron 1000 it stopped working completely and in my 1525 it started coming loose in just a couple months. The hard drive on my 1525 also seems like its going after 2 years of light use.

Bottom-Line: Hands down, the Dell Latitude E6500 is a performance winner.

Now that Windows 7 is finally on the street, it is time for another technology refresh; this time the entire department traded up to the Dell "Latitude E6500 Notebook" computer. Dell constructed the business-class notebook of a magnesium alloy, rugged paint finish and tough metal hinges, which makes the "Latitude E6500" more durable than older Dell portable offerings.

My slate black (it can also be had in red and blue) "Latitude E6500" doesn't feel any heavier than the notebook it replaces, a Dell Latitude 8 series, which makes carrying the portable desktop replacement everyday easy on the shoulders and back. But the "Latitude E6500" is far more capable than the Latitude D820 checking in with 4GB of Ram, an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 15.4" Premium WXGA LED display.

The Laptop

The "Latitude E6500" comes very close to being a full fledged, full feathered desktop replacement; the unit houses your choice of Intel Core 2 Duo Processors; mine shipped with the base P8600 running at 2.40GHz with 3MB L2 cache, on a 1066MHz FSB. And while the D600 only sported (2) USB 2.0 ports, the ruggedized "Latitude E6500" has 4 including a combo USB/Power port and combo USB/eSATA.

In addition the notebook can be had with a integrated fingerprint reader, as well as only (1) PC Card/ExpressCard 54 slot, (1) 4-pin mini-Firewire port, Smartcard slot, 5-n-1 card reader, E-Family modular media bay: (8X DVD-ROM, 24X CDRW/DVD, 8X DVD+/-RW, second Hard Drive or Travel Lite Module), and Port Replication port to round out the expandability of this performance packed laptop.

Starting at some 5.2-pounds the "Latitude E6500" feels comfortable while typing on the broad, full featured back-lit keyboard, that is complemented by a pointing stick and a touch pad; both of which have their own sets of mouse buttons. The feel of the keyboards' keys reminds me of the IBM keyboards of old that felt good on the fingers and felt almost metallic and strong.

And both can be set up to disable themselves automatically when an external pointing device is added to an available USB port. You can optionally configure the "Latitude E6500" to use biometric security (fingerprint reader), which can be integrated into the right hand side of the laptop below the keyboard.

The "Latitude E6500" features a bright, crisp, 15.4-inch UltraSharp WUXGA wide screen with an ultra-fine, 1900 x 1200 native resolution that renders great graphics, but makes the text and icons difficult to read; I have my screen set to 1280x768, which proves to be a very workable setting for me.

In the area of wireless networking, the "Latitude E6500" excels. Unlike other laptops I have used that integrate wireless into the case--usually in the screen housing--the "Latitude E6500" incorporates a switch on the right edge of the laptop that turns the wireless adapter off and on: slide the switch forward, and the built-in 802.11 b/g wireless card automatically searches for available networks, displaying those available on the screen and indicating whether the network is 11Mbps or a faster (G) network. The WiFi switch can also be configured to switch on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both of them.

In addition to the ports I mentioned above the "Latitude E6500" also features a standard VGA, infrared, 56Kbps modem, Gigabit Ethernet, headphone, and microphone jacks. Because the "Latitude E6500" is built for the business user, the unit lacks multimedia features such as S-Video, S/PDIF audio, and a HDMI port, and more USB ports that might typically be found on consumer/multi-media-oriented laptops. The D280 does house a DVD/CD-RW drive, which together with the included CyberLink PowerDVD software can used to view movie while on the road.

The "Latitude E6500" can be fitted with a maximum of 8GB of Dual Channel DDR2 RAM, and 250GB HHD. However, there a number of hard drive choices including solid state drives with a capacity of up to 128GB.

First Impressions:

I like my new Dell "Latitude E6500." The unit is light weight, sturdy and performs quite well thanks in larger part to the ultra-fast Intel Core Duo processor and 4GB of DDR2 Dual-Channel RAM under the hood. This makes the E6500 markedly and noticeably faster than a single-core system. This means that the notebook runs Windows 7 Enterprise Edition run really, really well.

I like the look and feel of the notebook. It is lightweight, but still durable easy to carry to and from work every day. And did I mention the stellar back-lit keyboard? It lights up when a single key is clicked and turns off automatically after about 5 seconds of inactivity.

The best feature of the "Latitude E6500" is the UWXGA display. The 15.4 inch screen is bright, crisp and clear. It is not the best LCD display I have ever used, but it is more than adequate for business use, and for playing the occasional DVD.

Conclusions

Hands down, the Dell "Latitude E6500" is a performance winner, especially when mated with Windows 7 Enterprise Edition. I like the increased processing power, the increased batter power, and increased memory. And the laptop is handsome to look at! Though I doubt I will ever have cause to use the 4-pin Firewire port, or the eSATA port, for that matter, it is nice to know its there just in case, and (4) USB ports has certainly com in handy.

Snow Leopard adds a lot more than I thought.

This is a great computer if you want to play with pics, surf the web, mess with your music collection.

This is not the Mac if you want serious processing power of lots of inputs to create a home network.

Look to a MacBook Pro or iMac for that.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had more inputs.

This is a pricy computer already, now I have to spend more to get adaptors.

I wish it was still available in black or you could opt for the non-glaze display.

I had intended to purchase my mother a Macbook for some time now. I wobbled between the several models I considered. However, Apple's late October 2009 update to the white polycarbonate MacBook made the decision much easier.

Reasons for my Decision With this update to the 13-inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry-notebook impressive numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo is the same processor found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro (it has 160GB only).

Yes, considering the larger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook actually gives you a higher specification computer in some regards than the $200 more expensive MacBook Pro 13-inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody provides strength, and I must say this notebook is very solid. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a long-life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. In terms of performance, my mother reported to me simple usage of nearly six hours on a charge. Impressive. Blows away my older Mac notebook's battery.

Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro would offer, but my mother would likely not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces very carefully as it will show light scratches easily.

The bottom of the MacBook is a bit strange. It is a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I'm not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I would recommend wiping off whatever surface you are going to sit the computer on, to remove light dust, if you worry about the computer's appearance.

Overall, I was looking to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I didn't want to compromise performance, and I feel I didn't despite choosing this entry-level MacBook. Truly, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only slightly faster. These computers are getting faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.

The price to value of this MacBook is remarkable. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a larger hard drive. You can't argue with that. I didn't, and the MacBook has impressed.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I've been through 3 PC laptops in 4 years and only one of those didn't have fatal hardware failures or viruses. I used Mac's briefly in 99' and didn't understand them at all and have shunned them ever since. Finally after my last laptops motherboard started failing I decided it was time to take the leap to a Mac. The main reason I did this was because I've heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple products. I waited for the new models to come out first before I got one because I have a habit of always wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I'm used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough getting used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I've had it for almost a 2 1/2 weeks now and so far I couldn't be happier. There are very few flaws that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too "sharp" and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher would yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about getting the Macbook pro but could not justify spending more money and getting the same/lower specs (i.e. 160gb hard-drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery). I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I don't type in the dark so I can do without the backlight keyboard. At this rate I don't see myself going back to PC anytime soon!

This is my 4th Apple laptop (PB150, White iBook, MacBookPro Alumnium). All personally owned. I've also been a user of many PC laptops for work. Our last 2 Mac Laptops have been our sole home computer when we've owned them. Getting probably 6 hours of daily average use.

I have to say that this new unibody MacBook is by far, my favorite laptop I've ever owned and used.

We've been using it for a month now with the same rate of usage. Maybe more because of the holidays.

It has some slight imperfections.

1. I wish it still had composite TV out, but when I become the last person on earth to finally upgrade to HDTV, it will be ready (3rd party HDMI/video out cables are cheap).

2. The edge of where your arms go needs to be rounded because it slightly slices into your wrists. (I haven't filed it down yet, but will...)

3. And sure, target mode in firewire would be nice. But, it's rarely needed ($15 for a shell and a disassembly gets you to the harddrive in the disasterous event your system is so fried you can't get a network hookup going).

4. An SD slot would be nice too. But, everything I have a card in is USB anyway, and I already have card readers for when I don't (or my devices connect directly anyway).

5. It's more expensive than Windows laptops. But, at under $1000 ($850 if you're smart with rebates and deals) the MacBook makes buying a Mac almost equivalent to a nicer Windows laptop. Almost. Well, it's at least not embarrassing to admit anymore.

But, that's it with the negatives.

It's slim and sleek. The unibody means no flex when I hold the corner with one hand (RIP 2.5 year old G3 iBook with graphic chip recall). The plastic means no permanent deformation when I drop it from 4 feet (RIP 2.5 year old MacBookPro with a slow overheating death near the corner I dropped it on.) The battery life is impressive. (RIP every PC laptop I've ever used within 6 months.)

The white keys mean keyboard lighting is not such a big deal. The glossy screen is not really that glossy. The screen is bright and sparkly. The processor is speedy. (I run Windows on it just fine.)

The 250 gig HD is big enough (I'd need a few terrabytes to hold all my media anyway.) 250G is enough to simply expose the low end MacBook Pro for what it is Apple's cynical attempt to milk money out of folks.

The mousepad is just wonderful. Takes a day or two to get used to not having a "button", but it's simply wonderful after that. Two fingers for a right mouse click and for scrolling. I zoom in and out of dual browsing sessions with the pinch like I never expected to do. And it's CENTERED in front of the screen. I don't know what Windows design idiots decided to stop centering their mousepads and keyboards and to give them tiny recessed buttons, but I refuse to personally purchase a lopsided laptop where you have to flop 4 inches off one leg just to type and where your thumb is rigidly fixed to an ergonmically challened button. The keyboard is equally well designed and easy on the fingers for this touch typist.

And, 2 of my Apple pet peeves have been fixed: the latchless lid is perfectly designed, and, there's no feet to get rubbed off the bottom anymore.

Oh, and it's light. Not MacBook Air light. But, surprisingly light and thin. I carry a 17" Windows machine for work. Yet, the 13" screen rarely feels restrictive. And, its performance blows away the MacBook Air. Try running full screen video off of YouTube on a MacBook Air. It can't do it. This MacBook has the juice to display without stuttering.

Plus, importing the old data from my old MacBookPro was seamless. Import and done. Just a few apps that needed to be upgraded for 64 bit and Snow Leopard. No crap on the desktop to remove like a new Windows computer. No annoying security messages. No virus worries. Basically, ZERO "Windows" worries. (Yes, I've got XP running on VM ware fusion and Vista on Boot Camp for certain games. So, I know of what I speak... Yes, I'm a masochist.)

And finally, it's MacOSX. I'm the kind of guy that has people coming to me for tech help at work, asking for recommendations "for a new PC cause their old one has a virus". They need help reinstalling windows. They have driver issues. They have reps from foreign countries advising to "recover" their systems (which means wiping the entire Harddrive). They have trojans running wild. They are always confused and frustrated. The only ones who don't have problems are the ones who are too scared to do anything with their computers. Or, who are technically savvy enough to navigate the waters. Who like the complication.

The annoying things people have come to accept from Windows computing astound me. As a daily user of both OS's for decades, I always breathe a small sigh of relief when I get back to my Mac.

MacOSX is wonderful. It rarely frustrates. (Just scan down the list of Amazon's laptop best sellers, and see the average stars for Mac machines vs. Windows machines. Clearly, there is a difference in quality and ease of use that justifies the difference in cost.)

So, this review is much longer than I intended. But, after reading the initial reviews a month ago -of Mac zealots who hadn't purchased one who were whining about "no firewire" -of clean freaks who worried about microscopic scratches (barely a blemish on ours in this household with 3 cats, a dog, and 3 and 6 year old kids), I just had to put my 2 cents in. This is, in my opinion, the best laptop Apple has released.

Why? Because it is inexpensive (for a Mac) and does everything you need it to do.

While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.

Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

I will keep this brief, because this is not the newest technology. This is the second VAIO I have owned and both of them have performed well. I have no real complaints with the hardware at all. Sony seems to have gotten it mostly right as both of my machines have had absolutely no problems that were machine related.

I chose this machine because I was not pleased with the new Windows 8 environment...and this machine was still available with Windows 7. Windows 8 may be a real pleasure for tablet users or someone who just likes the touch screen environment, but I have had two touch screens fail and I wasn't interested in trying another one. Windows 7 is a much more stable environment than Vista which is running on my previous VAIO. Since the choice was either this machine or one running Windows 8, I chose this one....Yes, you can use Windows 8 without a touch screen, but the interface for the user is the same as the touchscreen...and I was not impressed.

Having said that, my previous VAIO has experienced some software issues after the repeated Vista updates. Vista was never a really stable environment and I grew to dislike it. I have been using Windows 7 on other machines and find it much better behaved than Vista...so it was a natural choice for me. Previous VAIO is about 7 or 8 years old and is still running in the original mechanical condition. The battery finally gave up about a year ago, so it has been necessary to keep it hooked up to the power adapter to keep it running. This new machine appears to have a slightly smaller battery...at least it seems like it. I am not certain about the run time yet, but I expect it will be okay...although not as long as some others. This machine is acceptably fast and handles graphics well with the ATI graphics adapter. The 4 GB of on-board memory is enough for almost any normal task, but is upgradeable to 8 GB if you so desire. The HDD is 500 GB and seems to seek (R/W..)faster than the previous one. The optical drive is also very efficient, fast and quiet. The boot routine is MUCH improved over Vista based routines (at least in my experience..)and much faster to completion. This is probably a function of improved BIOS as well as improved routines embedded in Windows.

Overall, my only complaints with this machine are software related....and those are the same with any modern notebook. The hardware seems to be solid.....So four stars based on acceptable performance and good value.

Don't listen to the other guy. Maybe his standards are really high, who knows. Not many Dell owners are that smart. Anyway, I've owned this laptop for about seven months and it's treated me well for it's price. Plenty stable, fine battery life, multitasks like a dream. I don't know what kind of stress you put your system under, but I can leave my video editing program open, convert massive videos and still carry through multiple operations without any lag or screw ups. My only complaint is that it comes with loads of Toshbia software to try and make things easier. Who knows? Maybe your mom or little brother would get something out of it but I can fare just fine on my own. Not a bad idea to strip it down and just run what you need. Believe me, the price is right and this guy does well for himself; you won't regret it.

This laptop is amazing, especially for the price! I don't know why one reviewer had trouble doing multiple things on his laptop, I don't know what programs the person was using... but I am able to run a browser, burn a DVD, edit a movie, and listen to iTunes at the same time with no problems at all.

The family really enjoys using this computer. It has great storage capacity. The built in number pad was an excellent plus that I did not realize it had until it came!

I type A LOT. This computer is NOT one I'd recommend if you also type a lot. The keyboard layout is not so great the shift key on the right is much smaller than a standard shift key. I thought I'd adjust to this, but after having the computer for almost a month, I'm still having to search for the shift key while typing, and I often hit the arrow-up key instead, which then requires me to readjust my position in the text I'm typing. Really an unnecessarily bad feature. However, this I can handle in comparison to the touchpad. My goodness!! This thing has a mind of it's own! I cannot copy things the way I'd like to either instead of highlighting a line of text to copy, the touchpad will interpret my attempts at highlighting as me wanting to pull and drag the text elsewhere (which might be all right if I was able to highlight an entire line before it attempts to do this). Totally useless. All this being said, I have to add that it's a fast machine. This is why I gave it 3 stars. It's worth the money in that respect for sure (I bought mine new for a little over $500). If you don't mind fumbling with a possessed touchpad, and having to search for the shift key over and over again (which slows down typing and leads to errors), then I'd recommend this laptop. But, if you type a lot or enjoy properly navigating with a touchpad mouse, DO NOT GET THIS LAPTOP!!

The computer looks rather nice (looks similar to a Mac, but is thicker). Parameters of this machine are impressive, but it has several drawbacks. The touchpad is not comfortable, fan is quite loud. I have only had this computer for about a week and haven't had any issues with it and even set it up as a duel boot with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with no problems. The only complaint I have about it right now is the sound, it's not very good but i didn't buy this computer for a sound machine so I am o.k. with that. The graphics are very good which is very important for a laptop computer and the 15.6" monitor is what I really like. For the price, I think it is a very good buy. Purchased this item during a one day Amazon special for $339 and I am not looking back at all! The processor is not a speed demon but for Office apps particularly LibreOffice just fine. My large LCD television fried and during the time spent waiting for repair I installed the DirecTV app that enables you to stream recorded items to your PC and the performance was flawless.

I've installed VirtualBox and it runs Virtual Machines just fine.

The laptop is large full size keyboard with separate numeric keypad and the screen easy on my older eyes.

Samsung's battery technology has come a long way and even with this economy model, you get 4+ hours on a charge.

While some metal (for strength) on the case would have been nice, for the money I don't think you can go wrong with this unit.

I successfully registered the purchase on Microsoft's site for a $15 upgrade to Windows 8 Professional, although I haven't taken the time to actually do the upgrade yet.

Lastly, the bloatware loaded on the machine was minimal and easily removed. I commend Samsung on their restraint.

If you're on a tight budget, or you just don't want to spend a lot of money, I think this is definitely a great choice. The processor and memory are sufficient for ordinary use, the hard drive is ordinary, it has a ten key on the side, a good quality webcam, reasonable screen resolution and graphics, etc. It will work great for homework, and everyday use. If you play internet video games, it may not be the best choice, but otherwise, good for it's price. Others have something to brag about, and then a weak link to compensate the cost, but this laptop is well balanced to work well.

This was a purchase made to replace an old desktop that was running on its last leg. So far the only thing I dislike is windows 8 but nothing having to do with the actual laptop (Windows 8 does take a little getting used to).

The specs were right where we needed (expandable to 8 GB RAM) as this will mostly used for school work and not design or entertainment. Videos play with no problems, the wireless works with no connectivity issues. I was able to get MS Office installed and works right into the look of windows 8. The apps included are ok, but very easy to uninstall. No disks sent with the computer but not a problem for us.

This computer is well made, and I bought it primarily because I've owned two other Gateway computers (1 laptop, 1 desktop). I still don't quite know how to feel now that I've seen the "Acer Computer" label on the bottom. It has an LED backlit screen, and the display is phenomenal. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it is HD. When I was comparing the features Amazon listed versus other similar models, the video card wasn't listed as anything special, but I found it is the same as the comparable Dell model.

On the downside, it runs on Windows 8, which I don't like. My previous laptop came with Windows "Vista", (which SUCKED), so I upgraded it to Windows 7. Maybe in time, I'll get used to the new operating system,but I doubt it. It works well, I just don't like it.

If you're thinking of buying this computer, I don't think you can go wrong. It is fast, has nice sound, a fantastic display, and a built in numeric keypad (which I unfortunately don't need now, due to a job change). It's a good buy.

I have not owned many laptops, I find this Gateway superb. It has taken a few days to get used to Windows 8, this is just learning.

This seems to be a nice laptop, so far I have been able to do everything I wished to. It is faster than my desktop, for some things.

I have yet to install some programs, this is due to getting used to 8.

I have found no problems, and the Wifi range is great. My Kindle, and other things using wifi, get maybe 2 bars, this laptop gets 3 to 4, which is good, since I use this at the other end of the house.

My next step will be to install FFXI game, on this, and a few other programs, I use daily.

I read the reviews from the previous model and compared it with some other laptops and based on the reviews and problems thereof I decided to buy this one.

The Good:

1. Laptop Visually looks nice overall

2. Webcam works well

3. Laptop doesn't heat up too much

4. I haven't heard or am bothered by the fan

5. Ram is good. Videos, and multiple programs play well.

6. Laptop works well.

The Neutral:

1. Touchpad is not in the center of the laptop. I suppose this is a new thing and common in modern ultrabooks but still unappealing; After working with a Giant Touchpad from an Apple MacBook Pro this is somewhat of a letdown. HOwever, it does work fine and the location is chosen off center because the location of the home row keys to aid in using the thumbs to browse with mouse. Overall Aesthetically center would be nice but practically with the layout of the keyboard and length of the laptop it would not be practical. So neutral there.

The Mediocre:

1. Laptop is filled with 3rd party Bloatware. This isn't too bad, though I spent a couple hours removing much of it.

2. Most Samsung programs are junk. A program to transfer files between Samsung PCs? Bah, not necessary. I kept a few of them, Samsung Easy Settings and Fast Boot are worth keeping.

3. NVidea Control Panel is Installed, but this laptop uses Intel Graphics 4000. No Graphics Card = Software has nothing to do = Waste of space.

4. Laptop sleeps often. I have to click several times to get it to wake up. Somewhat annoying but passable.

5. Can't open Laptop with one hand. The laptop is good in that it stays well-closed. Just opening it takes too hands due to the lightweight laptop itself. Not too bad, just somewhat unideal; I suppose it comes with the ultrabook territory.

Anyway, overall the pluses far outweigh the mediocre parts and I advise this laptop. It works, is quiet, doesn't overheat, and can handle the standard programs and applications you would want to use with it.

I have had the laptop for four days now and my overall impression is that I like it very much. I did have an initial problem with the wireless adapter. It would drop connection randomly, sometimes after working for hours, other times after only a few minutes. My only option was to reboot to reestablish the connection. I got on the Intel web site and looked for support on the Intel adapter. it is an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235. The Intel web site has an app that will analyze your computer and it found an updated driver. Once I installed the new driver I have not had any problems with the wireless adapter.

Computer performance is very good. It boots up quickly and restart from sleep is very fast. The touch pad works very smoothly, however the buttons are small and if your thumb hangs over onto the touch pad (mine does sometime), the touch pad doesn't work. The keys on the keyboard are sized and spaced correctly. However, they are very shallow which takes a little getting used to.

The computer is compact and very lightweight at just under 4 pounds. Even though the screen is smaller than my old laptop (16 inch Toshiba), it is very readable. I haven't ran the battery down fully, but I estimate the battery charge to last around five hours in performance mode. Power saver mode would obviously improve on that.

At this point I would not hesitate to recommend this computer.

UPDATED: after several days of working well, the connection drops are back. I don't understand how this can happen: it should either work or not, I would have thought. I will probably return it if I can't solve it another way.

UPDATED AGAIN: I returned it, got a replacement. I couldn't be more happy. Works just great. No problems. Terrific package and great performing computer. I did try out a similar featured Toshiba (R935) but the build quality and keyboard were really much worse, so the Samsung is a keeper (for now).

I selected this laptop because it was basically an ultrabook with an optical drive. Moreover it has a VGA port, two USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI, huge hard drive (but not 7200 rpm). So incredibly versatile all in one package, and with the SSD as well, it boots up and resumes super fast. Almost like a Macbook :)

The negative reviews about the wireless problem gave me pause, but I bought the laptop anyway, and sure enough it dropped wireless connections like crazy. OK, I thought, I'll go on Samsung's website, then Intel's and get the latest driver for the Intel Centrino Advanced N6235 wireless adaptor. The version installed in my laptop when it arrived was 15.0 and on the Samsung web site was a version 15.0.0.75. On the Intel website, I could find 15.1.1, in the obvious place, and by searching on Google, I was able to find 15.2. This was in the right place on the Intel website, but under Windows 7, not Windows 7 (64 bit). The link for the Windows 7 drivers for this adaptor contains both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. You can also install the Intel/PROSET program that can analyze your wireless behavior and provide diagnostics. But it did not help me yet.

None worked or solved the problem.

I was nearly on the point of returning it, when a friendly technician suggested that I first uninstall the driver already there, and then install the latest version. In other words, installing a new driver does not first uninstall the old, dysfunctional driver, and bits of that get left behind and mess with the new driver. So I uninstalled the old driver first (go to Device Manager and look at the properties of the wireless adaptor for the button that does the uninstall), installed 15.2, and that did the trick. Now the wireless is stable and works well. (BUT THE PROBLEM RETURNED AND WAS ULTIMATELY SOLVED BY GETTING A REPLACEMENT: I THINK IT WAS A HARDWARE ERROR ON THE INTEL WIFI CHIP, AS THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE CHIP FROM USERS WITH OTHER MAKES OF COMPUTER).

Overall, this laptop is just great. I'm glad that I was able to solve the problem, and find it a perfect lightweight all-in-one laptop.

This is an initial review after only a few days of use, but I figured I should review now while a lot of the troubleshooting issues are fresh in my mind. Many of the negative reviews on here are justified, because the computer as shipped did not have full functionality. I ordered a usedlike new model from Amazon warehouse deals (Windows 7 version), so this review may not be applicable to all new models shipped. However, if you have similar issues with your new model, the fixes suggested in this review should work.

First, the good:

-sleek

-light-weight

-fairly fast for most common uses like internet browsing, watching streaming movies, microsoft Office Applications, etc.

-quiet key board (but not back-lit as many have pointed out)

-Large track pad (I consider this a plus, but if you tend to type with your wrists resting below the keyboard rather than hovering above it, then you may have issues with you wrists moving the mouse or clicking it which several other reviewers have complained about)

The Mediocre:

-The screen resolution and size make it somewhat inappropriate for graphic design applications. It is a matte screen rather than a glossy screen. While that may sound great, one of the consequences is that the screen must be positioned exactly perpendicular to the viewer or else the colors will fade or darken when the screen is viewed at an angle.

-I don't think any gamers would gravitate to this PC given the specs and the screen size, but just to quell any possible suspicion no, it's not ideal for gamers.

The Bad, or the Trouble shooting fixes:

-The touchpad worked when it arrived, however it did not have multi-touch enabled (two finger scrolling, zoom in/out), nor was there a way in the control setting to enable multi-touch. This took a while to fix, but my pain is your gain. If you google Samsung series 5 trackpad driver, and go to the link from the Samsung official website, then you can download and install a new driver. Then go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sound > Mouse Properties > TouchPad > Options and modify settings for multitouch as desired. Actually, try to go there first if you have that issue, and if you can't get there then update the driver.

-Not all of the function keys worked. This was another software issue, and so fairly easy to fix. If you go to the start menu and go to the Samsung folder, you may find a program called SW Update. If you don't find that program, you can download it from the Samsung Website. That program has a lot of the necessary updates (as well as some bloatware that you may want to avoid). Updating "Easy Settings" software made all the Function keys fully functional. Also, it's not a bad idea to update anything else that looks essential, like "System BIOS", Windows Patches, and other drivers.

-Wonky WiFi I just experienced this once. The WiFi was turned off after starting up the PC, and turning it on wasn't working. Samsung has this "Quick boot" and "Fast Start" software installed, which is supposed to make start up faster. I turned that off, thinking that these processes may be cutting too many corners, and the WiFi worked again upon restart. Using typical Windows "Sleep" mode for quick shut down and start up is fast enough for me anyway. I can't say for certain that "Fast Start" is the problem, but the WiFi has been fine since turning it off.

I'm pretty happy with this purchase now that everything seems to be running smoothly. I'll update if anything changes. I will say that if I had paid the full new price of ~$900 for this laptop, I would probably not be as happy dealing with these issues and may have given it a lower rating, but for $500 on a refurbished unit, I expected it to some extent.

I decided on the Samsung Series 5 after about 3 months of research and watching prices rise and fall on Amazon. Since I travel internationally and needed a new computer for my job, I wanted something light but fast and functional. I started looking at true Ultrabooks but decided I could sacrifice a little thinness and a solid state drive for more storage, a CDROM drive, and VGA connection. As a teacher, I use the VGA connection and CDROM frequently, so I wasn't interested in carrying a dongle around with me everywhere. In summary, this Samsung has everything I was looking for.

I've had this computer for about three weeks and I've had no problems with it. I owned a four year old Dell previously so the new i5 processor was surprisingly fast for me. Boot-up takes almost no time at all and the computer is able to multitask with ease. It runs the new Diablo III without any problems. The fan is quiet and rarely comes on. I can get about 4 hours of battery with constant internet use. The construction feels solid and I like the brushed metal body and matte screen. I haven't had any problems with the touch pad and the keyboard is different from my old Dell so it's taking some time to get used to the much shallower keys. It's also very light compared to my old Dell and I can easily carry it around with me without becoming uncomfortable.

I recommend this Samsung for anyone looking for something fast, functional, and light without wanting to sacrifice storage or a CDROM drive.
