Great machine.

I use this for regular household stuff, but also for running Line 6 music processors and KRK near-field sound monitors. Sounds great. And the large screen allows me to work with multiple apps (video, audio, and text simultaneously) without an additional video monitor.

It's plug-and-play into my large-screen TV with an excellent picture for online sports and movies even with a straight RGB connection (supported), though it's pretty large for dragging around the house.

I'm enjoying the step up from XP to 7. A lot of software downloads/updates initially, but all installed seamlessly. Blotware? Some but I've certainly seen a lot worse.

I can hear the fan, but for the amount of power in this slim case, the fan noise is not more than would be expected. I run CPUID HWMonitor to watch temperature and other hardware diagnostics. The fan is definitely doing it's job. I had difficulty adjusting to the touchpad, so I bought a cheap, Logitech wireless mouse. All is good.

Recommended. I picked up one of these at Best Buy for less.

This computer is great! I use this for everyday usage and im glad to say this pc looks great runs great and has alot of features. Ive got mine from best-buy with geek squad protection. After 2 months of using this computer iv had no problems.Finger scanner is a awesome feature. I also love how fast this thing is.For the size of this machine the battery life is excellent no problems there. I defiantly recommend this computer no matter how old you are.

I love having a nice wide screen, and have had no problems with features on this laptop, but I cannot recommend purchasing this simply because the fan noise is sort of....extreme. It is extreme to the point of being distracting. I do not have the vent in a place that would make the fan have to work harder to vent, or anything like that. It is simply noisy. Would not purchase this one again.

I purchased my dv7-6c95dx a little more than a year ago. It had awesome specs and i was exited to have a viable laptop that could run memory intensive programs with ease (games, video streaming services, hd video, etc.). It did run very well, for the first couple months. The cooling fan became a very big distraction, constantly running at full power, even when i had the power setting on power saver + lowest screen brightness. it became a constant drone and my siblings frequently called it "the jet engine". i stored it in a place where ventilation would not be an issue either. a few months later, the hard drive failed. got it replaced and still encountered hard drive issues (failed to boot when opening the lid, LEDs came on but screen didn't, tried shifting through displays and everything, only way to fix it was to hard boot) also, upon loading certain programs/booting, the CD drive would clunk every so often. The screen is too big for the hinges it is attached to. after months of opening and closing, the strain on the hinges has caused them to wear, and just recently (right after my 1 year warranty expired), the right hinge broke completely and i can no longer close the lid due to the screen starting to bend the black screen trimming. if i were to close the lid, the screen wouldn't come with it and i would simply crack my screen. Also since my warranty expired, my cooling fan no longer runs at full blast! that may sound like a good thing, but now my laptop overheats. even with the power saver setting + lowest brightness. Battery only lasted 8 months, now i have to constantly leave it plugged in. If left unplugged, with no intensive programs running, i'm lucky if it lasts an hour. My little gateway, i3 with 4gigs mem and 250gigs hard drive space lasted 4 TIMES AS LONG as this P.O.S. never had any problems with it, and it still runs fine, but i donated it to one of my siblings because i planned on getting a better laptop. or so i thought. extremely disappointed.

I generally do not write reviews. However this particular product and the whole experience with Toshiba customer service has forced me to voice my concern.

I bought this laptop since it was cheap and loaded with many features. I had other options at the same price but i went with Toshiba because of company's reputation.

OK here is my experience;

I bought the laptop and brought it home. After 2-3 days it started giving me blue screen error(some hardware issue). Later On the laptop started to freeze without any reason. It came to a point that it started freezing every minute or so.

I could not return it because it was already past 30 days.

So first i searched google for known issues with this laptop. I was surprised to see that lot of people had the same problem. Somehow there was a faulty hardware in this particular lot that was shipped. It was sad to see that company was still selling this.

Anyway i called Toshiba Support Center to get it repaired (it has one year warranty). It seems the support center already knew the issue with the laptop. They told me right away to ship it to there repair location. I was happy that they are familiar with the issue. Ok here is the fun part; they told me to ship the laptop to there location at my own expense, i.e. pay 25$ for laptop shipment. I tried to argue but they said its there policy. They know that they have shipped a faulty hardware with there laptop and now on top of that they are asking us to pay again for shipping it to get it repaired.

Anyway atleast i was given a choice to ship it with whichever method i choose to. So i went to USPS and i paid 15$ to ship it via priority mail with a tracking number etc.

Now i was trying to track my shipment with USPS to see if it has reached the repair location. Well,the USPS tried to deliver the laptop at there Louisville, KY repair location but there was nobody to receive it there. So USPS left a slip on there mail location to either schedule a re-delivery or pick it up.

As per USPS's new policy they do not do an automatic redelivery attempt. The receiver has to call to schedule a redelivery or pick it up at the post office.

Ofcourse i do not have a phone number for Toshiba's louisville repair center so that i can call them and ask them to schedule a redelivery; i called the Toshiba customer support center to see if they can help. To my surprise, they said since the laptop has not arrived at the repair location; it is not in there system so they can not help me with this. Instead of giving me alternative they hung up on me intentionally twice.

Now my laptop is sitting in some post office in Louisville which will be delivered back to me if not picked up in 15 days (USPS will not schedule redelivery on sender's request).

So basically , myself (the Toshiba customer) is going through unnecessary trouble for buying a faulty laptop. My only fault is that i bought this laptop because of Toshiba's reputation.

Therefore please be careful when you buy Toshiba's products, particularly be aware of the support center.

I am a big fan of everything Japanese; but this incident with Toshiba was surely not soothing.

This laptop is perfect with battery life, size, weight, look, monitor quality, overall quality, AND the best part is its got a NumPad which is great if your used to desktop keyboards. Main thing I love about it is its battery life, 5 hours! Even more if you set it down to Power saving mode and run on low brightness, runs for about 6 hours if you're not heavy computing. Keyboard is SILENT and made of great quality. Monitor is the perfect size for a laptop this price. Hard drive space is PLENTY. RAM is plenty for regular usage! Only thing holding this baby back is its processor. It is a dual core AMD 1.3 GHz processor which is fairly slow. It plays HD video smoothly, plays 1080p without any problems. The problem comes up when doing heavy installations or running programs that eat up CPU resources. Other than that, it handles everything from schoolwork to browsing.

Purchased our first Toshiba on this sale strictly looking for a new laptop with Windows 7 still available. This laptop has a beautiful display and we've had no problems whatsoever with the hardware or software during the 6 weeks since we bought it. The only reason we did not give 5 stars is a lack of some small conveniences that we are used to in our older HP laptops, such as a HDD activity light and small buttons to quickly turn off the Wi-Fi connection, and the track pad since we favor an external mouse.

I was very skeptical on this purchase because I never heard of MSi computers. Most of the brands I bought in the past were, Toshibas, HPs, and Dell. So needless to say I was a bit apprehensive with this $1500.00 purchase.

The main reason for choosing this MSi GT70 is for the amount of RAM. I did compare it with ASUS laptops too, I wanted more than 8 GB. The MSi has 12 GB. I also wanted a powerful graphics card and this one had a GeForce X675m. Although the graphics card only comes with 2 GB of memory this is still vast improvement over my Dell i7core Studio. I do video editing and wanted a powerful machine. The MSi GT70 does the job fine.

Games: I'm not a big gamer and this is not the main reason for purchasing this laptop. I did play one game that always crashed on every computer I have owned in the last 10 years. Playing on the GT70 was a pleasure. With turbo boost and manual fan control, it played as smooth as butter. There was not one map scenario I could not play, ...and no crashes.

Pre-purchase concerns:

1. I read some people were experiencing hinges breaking. This certainly is scary, but is a rare condition so don't expect this to be a frequent occurring defect and MSI might have corrected the issue by this date. Google it for more info.

2. Unknown brand which I mentioned before.

So let me list out the pros and cons as of this date. I'll start with the cons first.

Cons:

1. Windows 8 was a little tricky at first, I would of rather have windows 7 which is on my Dell and I am familiar with it. However, after a short time of working with it, I found W8 to be very intuitive and perhaps easier to use. It is formatted in an Apps format for the the Windows Start page. This makes customizing possible, but you need to acquire a little practice. See YouTube for demonstration videos!!

2. Size: Please don't be fooled by the proportionate dimensions in the picture. This laptop is big! Almost 17 inches long, 11.5 inches deep, 12.5 inches high when open. Large foot print on your desk.

3. Weight: At 8.6 lbs this computer is no featherweight. Actually it is lighter than I imagined, and when compared to my Dell 16" just slightly heavier. But it is heavier and bulkier than most laptops.

4. Although MSi has built the machine with some plastic panels and brushed aluminum panels, the plastic looks a little cheap. Although, the black brushed aluminum panels are beautiful. The plastic casing in not a deal breaker, but slightly noticeable. In addition, when opening the laptop, the inside with the Steelseries keyboard and brush aluminum panel looks high quality.

Pros:

1. The screen is non-reflective and is not as some reviewers have complained, muddy or grainy. I hardly noticed the matte finish, but I did notice the glare was minimum in the sun. Very nice screen also reduces eye strain.

2. The lighted key board and the Steelseries key board. Well lit and you can change colors of the whole keyboard or just a section. The keyboard is very responsive and feels like a quality keyboard.

3. Button on DVD tray there is still one on the key board to release the tray , but you will have a backup in case the the other goes.

4. Very well made. Solid machine for the cost. Built to last.

5. A laptop that stays cool! Even using turbo burst I have not had a hot computer playing higher CPU games/video editing. Some say the fan is loud. It is in turbo mode. The fan on my 16 in. Dell Studio was much louder for everyday use.

6. DynaAudio Sounds very good no distortion and the woofer on the bottom of the unit makes a difference. Best sounding laptop without headphones.

I will update this review as time goes on. But at this time I am very pleased with this laptop and impressed for what it can do.

Like most large purchases I make, I did a LOT research on this laptop and my decision to buy has not been regretted yet.

ProsGaming. As listed the GTX675m has worked flawlessly. Playing planet side 2 max settings and this computer hasn't even flinched. My 2008 HP with the gt130m couldn't handle it.

StartupI know win8 has had complaints but I honestly got used to it and it works great and starts up super fast. I counted 16 seconds from cold start.

Little bloatwaresome people may not know what im talking about but its useless programs that just take up space.

Screenprofessional reviews say viewing angle is bad but I tried and I think their complaint is a little exaggerated. Screen is also very bright and looks great!

Conspower brick is large but expected for this laptop is expected.

Fanwhen the fan's turbo mode is on it sounds quite loud but it's also not something that is totally necessary to be used unless heavy gaming otherwise the laptop stays quite cool. This is really a pro more than a con.

CameraLESSON TO LEARN IF YOU BUY; you have to engage the camera for it to work. I think it was fn-f6 to turn the webcam on.

All in all this laptop has by far and away been a great laptop. I'm enjoying gaming and ease of use (once you learn win8). I suggest this laptop especially for the price. Compare the specs at this price and I highly doubt you'll find better for the same or cheaper.

For the money, you really can't beat this computer. It came down to this laptop and the Asus G75VW. The main reason I went with this laptop is because of the mixed reviews of the Asus. This had very good reviews and had alot of neat features. So far I've played Mass Effect 3, Civilization 5, Minecraft and Eve Online and it has played all the games at max settings without a flinch. The ability to control the fan is nice too. After I'm done playing the game I turn the fan on to help cool the computer down faster. The turbo button is nice too, but after some updates mine stopped working. I looked it up in the forums and it said to just reinstall the device driver and it will be ok. Havent done so yet. The keyboard is awesome. Several different colors to choose from and in several configurations. The brushed aluminum that surrounds the keyboard is nice. It stays cool during game play and doesnt heat up your hand. Windows 8 is a trip. Very different from Windows 7 and others, but once you get used to it, it's nice. Some cool features that aren't in 7. The Sound is amazing. I played a video and I thought I was in a surround sound setup. I definatley felt as though I was in the movie. I did however have a hiccup, proably fixable. When i plugged in a set of headphones, the speakers still played. I havent looked into yet, but I'm sure theres a setting I accidentily pressed. Will update later. It is big and a little heavy, but I don't mind. It's what I wanted and I love it. Well that's all I can think of right now. I would definatley reccomend this laptop to anyone.

I received this product yesterday, after choosing the 1 day shipping. Lets start off by saying Amazon's customer service is impeccable, and I highly recommend buying from Amazon. Now to the computer.

I have used this computer, so far, for gaming. I have tried 2 games, Minecraft and ArmA 2. With Minecraft, using the 32-bit java(oops) and maxed out settings, I got a steady 70 fps. Note I used the 32 bit, which drastically lowers fps when on far mode. I also could not get the fps to drop, which is unbelievable.

On ArmA 2, I was able to play on the max setting again, but since this has a 1080p screen, it hurts your eyes when turning too fast. So though it can play on max setting easily, it is difficult to see.

As for heating, I think it isn't an issue at all. I played on this laptop for 5 hours, and virtually no heat was present. Though I cannot honestly judge heat as I used a cooling pad, which are amazing.

The appearance of the laptop is also great! I was in awe when first starting up this computer. It takes around 3 minutes for its first boot up, but once installation is done, it only takes 20 seconds. The lighted keyboard is very cool and unique. You are able to change the keyboard with various different colors, and can change it by choosing 1 of 3 rows on an application, and switching the color, with 5 different effects as well. The outside of the case feels very smooth and sturdy. There is a large metal plating, surrounded by done sort of strong plastic, giving it a great feel and look.

The battery life is also pretty good, giving you around an hour to two of energy-demanding activities.

The screen is absolutely massive! I was shocked at how large this computer actually was! It is fairly large, but pretty light. The screen looks very nice, and minimal reflections can be seen.

I only have a few small complains about this product. The drag pad or whatever it is called, is not very responsive while pressing keys alongside it. This means you will not probably be able to play first person games without a mouse. Another thing is the keyboard. I find it very difficult to play on the keyboard, even though it is the size of most other keyboards. The right side of the keyboard has a shortened shift button. This causes me to often push the arrow keys next to the right shift button, which interferes with typing. That is about it for complaints, very minimal.

Windows 8 is also installed on this computer. Most people will tell you it is terrible, and a waste if time. Do NOT believe this. Windows 8 is highly advanced, and takes time to learn, but once you learn how to use windows 8, you'll love it. It is far superior to windows 7 due to the increased speeds and such. With the new Windows 8, even Internet explorer isn't terrible! Plus, personalization is highly valued.

So honestly, don't go for another computer around this price range. I searched for weeks, and I am very glad I chose to buy this computer. Buy this laptop from Amazon, and even pick up a cooling pad to eradicate the possibility of over-heating from prolonged use.

I bought this computer expecting something that would last me several years of regular use. I'm not really much of a gamer, but I work in data security & I need a computer with a bit of horsepower and a stout graphics card /w CUDA. This computer fit the bill admirably -it easily handles everything I throw at it. It works as perfectly today, over six months since my purchase, as it did the day I bought it.

Here's how I feel about it now:

The good:

-The sound system is the best I've ever heard on any laptop. By a very wide margin, too...!

-I've upgraded this system to 16GB RAM and put in an SSD. It is way faster and more responsive than any desktop I've ever owned.

-It plays most games at max settings... with Photoshop, Google Chrome, and a half-dozen other programs running in the background.

-The fact that you can control the fan settings & Turbo-boost is really very useful

-The keyboard is pretty good. It could feel more substantial, but I have no real complaints to make against it. It's very easy to clean, and the backlighting looks cool.

-The computer stays cool at (almost) all times. (And when it heats up, just turn up the fan manually.) The fan is also very quiet in 'normal' mode.

The bad:

-The external materials and the finish are TERRIBLE. Like most people, I rest my hands next to the trackpad when I type. After a couple months of use, the paint/finish where I rest my hands started coming off. Now it's completely gone. There are two giant white spots next to the trackpad, where the black finish just rubbed off. These areas feel rough to the touch, and they're extremely annoying to say the least. Truth is that I don't even have particularly sweaty hands, and I don't type THAT often... so this was really quite surprising and disappointing.

-The 'shortcut' keys above the keyboard are covered with a very thin layer of shiny plastic, and they get dirty and scratch very easily. This plastic is also surprisingly difficult to properly clean, and the buttons are a bit overly sensitive.

-I have a messed-up speaker jack & a USB Port that doesn't work. Fortunately, they're both redundant. Again, just poor build quality at issue here.

-Battery life is typically less than an hour... but I suppose that's to be expected.

...So, to sum it up, the parts are good and the computer is strong as hell, but the build quality and external materials leave much to be desired. The black "brushed aluminum" finish is really just pathetic, as even moderate use will wear it down.

Frankly, I wouldn't buy this computer again. Some of the newer Razer offerings are slightly higher-priced, but are just as powerful, and their build quality is really top-notch.

Purchased this little laptop from Data Sales, because I wanted a smaller, lighter and more solid laptop than my Inspiron 1545. The latitudes are made of metal, like the terminator. You will read other reviews of this particular machine that say "it's slow, it gets hot, wah, wah, wah..." Yeah, it is a bit slow by today's standards, and yeah, it gets a little warm, but it's also 5-6 years old and it cost you $130.00! It's also light and solid and mine came with a docking station with a CD rw/DVD rom! (yours may not) The computer arrived super fast, well packaged and with the docking station that I wasn't expecting. Data Sales obviously practices the policy of under-promising and over-delivering as the condition was listed as "used-acceptable" and minus a couple of minor blemishes on the top of the case, the condition is excellent to like-new. Mine came with windows 7 pro (yours may not), I dual-booted it with crunchbang linux and it spins like a top. At some point I'll replace the HD with a SSD and I'm sure I'll get many years of web-surfing, pandora listening and e-mailing out of it. For $130.00 I couldn't be happier.

Cheap Apple MacBook Pro MC024LL/A 17-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

I finally made the decision to get rid of my two laptops (an HP envy, and a 13" macbook pro) in favor of this 17" macbook pro with a dual boot setup using Boot Camp. Initial impressions: The best choice I've ever made. Here's the whole thing broken down:

THE SIZE

This thing is pretty beastly, but it's not unwieldy. You definitely feel its size the second you pick one up, or move it around, but you'll quickly get over that once you open it up and turn it on. The keyboard is super expansive, the screen is unbelievable (more on that later) and you can still stay mobile with this thing if you really need to. It's not something you can easily move around with 1 hand from room to room, but if you're like me, and do most of your work at a desk, then this is a great choice to make. (Note: I also own an iPad, which is a fantastic pair with this thing, since it does about 90% of what I do on-the-go as far as mobile computing goes.)

THE SCREEN

So I mentioned already that you'll most likely fall in love with this thing like I did when you open it up and turn it on. It has the highest PPI (pixels per inch) of all the apple laptops they sell and it shows. I actually am considering not even hooking this up to my external monitor anymore, because of how brilliantly sharp it is. Colors really pop and text is easy to read. Also, since it's 17", you get a better-than-HD 1920x1200 resolution. My work is in development, so this is really a major selling point for me. I need to be able to manage all my windows in Xcode and Interface builder without tons of overlap and clicking between browsers, my chat windows and my code.

THE KEYBOARD

If you've used a macbook pro keyboard in the past year or so, you'll feel right at home with this thing. I will say this as a negative, however: It's not super comfortable on your arms right past your wrist, because the sharp edges of the laptop dig into your skin after a while.

THE PERFORMANCE

I copied over my entire OS/settings to this new macbook pro and ran some field tests to see how fast this thing is in comparison to my old macbook pro--and it screams. An iPhone/iPad project that takes 5-10 seconds to build on my old machine (core 2 duo) takes a fraction of that time here. The i5 is most definitely a step up from previous core 2 duos. I finally have a laptop I can stick Windows 7 on that is as good as a dedicated Windows machine can do. (Being able to have this 1 comp to run both environments is great!)

BATTERY LIFE

I will have to come back and update on battery life, but I can tell you that it's worlds better than my HP. That was similarly spec'ed and barely worked 2 hours on the go. This one so far is looking like 6 hours with wifi and full brightness. They have it rated at 8-9 hours, but I'm sure that's with brightness turned down and not full use the whole time. Truthfully, anything better than 2 hours with this kind of power is great for me.

TOUCHPAD

Again, if you've used a recent MacBook Pro, this is essentially identical. The biggest change here is that you can now use "inertial" scrolling, so that you can just flick your fingers to scroll long pages, and it will keep scrolling until it slows to a stop. This is very similar to the iPhone scrolling of long pages, or if you've used a Magic Mouse, it does the same thing.

Also, of note, is that of all the new copy cat glass track pads, I haven't used one that works as well as these. Even inside Windows, it performs real well and you feel productive with it. I've used other PC's with the no-button glass touchpad, and it makes me want to throw them across the room after a few minutes..

OTHER THOUGHTS/CONCERNS

While I'll keep this at 5 stars, this isn't necessarily a perfect computer. I have a few gripes with it, but they aren't really deal breakers and all the other pros make up for them so well that I'm okay with it. For starters, this has three USB ports (the 15 and 13 model only have 2) but unfortunately they are literally all lined up next to each other. If you have any kind of a fat usb device, you're out of luck for placing anything next to it.

Also, you'll most likely need to buy the mini-display port to HDMI converter because while Apple loves mini-display port, the rest of the world is just now using HDMI as its standard. You can find one here on amazon for real cheap ( Mac Converts):

Lighter than all but the lightest PCs, netbooks, etc.

The specs in the machine are pretty strong, yet it maintains a solid battery life of up to 9 hours (real world, you'll get around 7 or so with casual use, maybe 5 with some development work, a little less for VMs and so on).

The screen is sharp and vibrant, but not too difficult to read. Snow Leopard includes all sorts of zooming options so you're not constantly straining to read the text on the screen.

Once you've used a MacBook trackpad you won't want to go back to a standard one. It is a bit of a pain to have to map a right click function instead of keeping the two buttons for converts, but you'll get used to it once you find a option for you. The inertial scrolling is a keeper though.

At first, the battery life is going to take some getting used to, especially if you're used to laptops that have up to 3 hours of battery life in ideal situations.

Realizing that the MacBook Pro never needs to be shut down will also be a bit of a culture shock.

Some bullet points to consider (smaller MacBooks to the 17"):

You should expect comparable, but not identical, battery life out of the 17" from what you're used to. The only exception is the 2010 13", which has a staggering 10 hour max battery life. For that crowd, you'll want to adjust to a smaller battery life, definitely.

You can change the resolution down to something else, but know that Snow Leopard will get fuzzy. Screen resolution optimization is not a Snow Leopard strong point.

The difference between the high resolution 15" and the 17" is a matter of opinion. For me, I couldn't justify paying the price for the HR 15" when it was a few bucks less than the 17" which had a better resolution to it AND a stronger processor.

You can see from the pictures how much bigger the 17" is than the 13". For purposes of carrying, the 17" feels about as heavy as a decent sized book. It's probably not the most practical in a school classroom; for that I would lean towards the 13" as it's the most space friendly. But if you're a developer, writer, gamer, or anyone else who needs to do a lot with a little, the 17" will blow your mind.

Strictly my opinion...get AppleCare if you buy this laptop. Reason being: At its current price, it's really hard to justify, but replacing it out of warranty will be even more of a pain if something goes wrong.

Add a Solid State Drive or a 7200 RPM drive at least. You'll appreciate the added performance.

So...is it recommended? If you're one of the roles above AND can accept that there is a premium on this laptop, absolutely. It's overpriced. I'm not going to lie to you. The components in the laptop don't add up to the price Apple's asking. But it's still a solid machine and well worth a look if you want the top of the MacBook Pro line.

This is my 2nd Macbook Pro. I average a 4 year replacement cycle since features I need determine my upgrades rather than what ever latest changes may bring. I had a Powerbook g4 1gig, then the MBP C2d, and now the MBP Core i5. I should have opted for the i7, but didn't want to push it when work was picking up the tab this time. This machine can do it all. I run bootcamp, and parallels for instructing in the use of PC and the occasional PC game that needs all the processing power/Ram it can muster.

I teach and extensively use digital photography and videography. The machine is the brain of a floor full of f800's LaCie externals connected via daisy chain. When I need flat out performance using external I use the express card 34 slot for eSATA (Now Bootable via express card port) lightening fast transfers and editing. The better performance comes with the upgraded internal 7200RPM 500GB, and the 8Gigs of RAM. The full HD display is very nice with the super bright LED backlight. You can push performance with an SMC fan control download to allow you to run full fan speed before it gets to the point that it needs cooling to preserve performance.

The new trackpad gesture controls make for faster post work. The cool black keys harken back to my Powerbook days. The super fast graphics are amazing. The battery life is unbelievable when you are not tethered to drives and don't need to be wired down, it is really nice to go all day without needing to be plugged to power.

There isn't much more that I can say that hasn't already been covered by Conrad, Samer, and others. Keep it protected as there is no idiot insurance with Apple Care Protection Plan. I have been very pleased with the Pelican 1495 Air Tight/ Water Proof case at only $130.00.

The drawbacks from the previous model as mentioned in other comments are the sharper edges of the unibody that while it looks cool, it is painful if you don't put a cloth over it. I have lines in my arms from resting on the edges. The current lack of fully updated 64bit and quad core coded apps to take advantage of the new configuration will come in time. I love my Mac! Still not putting a sticker on my car though:-)

Update after 2 months of use.

I am very happy. The extra screen estate is fantastic and there is no way I could go back to a 15" for my type of use (see below). I generally get about 5 hours of battery life in constant use.

Whenever we visit family now we take the laptop and do slide show or video presentations of family photos and video. The screen is just the best for this. I do not find weight to be an issue. But I am more careful and always put the laptop in a sleeve and carry it very carefully. It is so sleek I could imagine it slipping out of my fingers! But I no longer find it bulky or heavy.

For my business use I have not needed an external screen at all. I may eventually buy a cheaper Dell screen for my office.

The only con I found before buying it is that the higher resolution make menus and text small. The fixes I found have worked (see below) and for the few programs that I have not found a fix for, I just zoom the screen. Not ideal, but this is only a small portion of my working time. The ability to have two or three programs open at once to do your work is such a huge plus. The 17" really suits me as I move from office to office and from office to home. If I was a student using it in classrooms it might be too big. In airports the computer is the same size as the trays they use which makes it hard to get the computer out of the tray you need two hands so the computer always goes through first. A small thing.

I have not found it hard to use while sitting on my lap on the couch. If anything the bigger size makes it more stable. I hate to say it, but I now like to do some of my work while sitting on the couch.

And I have to say it again the screen is gorgeous. Everyone is blown away by it!

When considering to replace my 15" Powerbook G4 that I used with an aging cinema display I thought to have the same setup again. A 15" Macbook Pro and a 24" display. But my big complaint about my 15" was always that there was never enough real estate to do my work. Yes I could surf the web and it could sit on my lap. But for any meaningful work (and I normally need to coordinate between two or three programs) I just could not fit my work on the screen. For that reason I started to consider the 17".

FYI I run a midsize business from my home office and often travel to satellite offices. At home I prefer to work in the lounge in the evening to be close to the family. On the road I try to spend less time on the computer and more time with my clients. And I often make presentations.

I spent a lot of time demoing the 15" and 17" at the Apple Store and talking to friends in the computer industry whom I respected. They all gave me the same advice. Get a 15" and a cinema display. But I really found that with my 15", it spent the vast majority of its productive time hooked to a monitor and I wanted to get away from an external monitor.

The biggest issue I found with the 17" is that the screen resolution is so high that all text becomes very small. This is a major issue with a lot of programs such as mail unless you want to send all your messages as 18 high font. Mail and Calender are two important programs from me. I found a hack for mail that allowed me to increase the appearance of mail by 25% ( go to terminal and type in defaults write com.apple.mail AppleDisplayScaleFactor 1.25 and for calender I switched to BusyCal. With most other programs such as final cut pro and Aperture most of my time is spent focusing on the images on screen and the controls are second nature. Work and Excel allow you to zoom. Quicken is a problem and for this I just zoom the screen which looses some resolution, but I am not on the program forever. I may buy a cheap external monitor later.

So we have all read the negatives about the 17", that it is heavy and hard to move around. Well, that is true. If I was a student moving from class to class then the 15" or 13" would be appropriate. And if I was a road warrior constantly on the move, making presentations and using a projector then a 15" would be appropriate. If I did 80% of my work in one spot and another 20% on the move then I would consider the 13" and external monitor. But if you are semi mobile and looking for a laptop that allows you to fully and easily do your work anywhere, then the 17" is in a class of its own. I love being in my office during the day and if I do not finish my work I take my laptop home and finish in the evening. My wife is not upset because I am still near the family and I am happy as I can still do meaningful work.

Another issue raised is airplane use. Unfortunately in this day and age the seats are so close together that it is hard to open any computer. Unless I fly business class my 15" stays closed. If you fly a lot and in economy and need to work then the 13" does make sense.

The 17" is big, heavy, and bulky compared to the 15" but You do get used to it. And when not in use I keep it in the protective sleeve. I never did this with the 15". The 15" was my going into battle computer. The 17" feels like I am taking fine art to work and I want to take care of it.

The three best things about the 17"

1) The display is gorgeous. Aperture and Final Cut Pro are a joy to use with the 17". Forget hotel TV's if you want to watch a movie. And again in a hotel room I can do my business without compromise.

2} All my friends who advised getting the 15" are now really jealous. I think the real reason that more people do not opt for the 17" is that they are afraid to go to the extreme.

3) I was able to dispense with an external monitor and I actually feel more mobile as I never have to plug into a monitor.

If you are reading this then you are probably trying to make up your mind as to which laptop to buy. I think the choice is simple. The 17" is actually cheaper as you can dispense with an external monitor. The 15" without an external monitor is a compromise. If you are highly mobile or highly stationary then definitely the 15" is better (or even 13"). If you are semi-mobile then the 17" is just amazing and you will love yourself for having it every time you turn it on.

After a long research I chose Toshiba Portege R705-P25 laptop as my final answer for a very light but powerful home unit. Being spoiled at work with a much more expensive and sturdy military spec 12' HP Elitebook 2540p with Core i7, I wanted something that wouldn't break my home bank, equally light and of a similar power, with a bit bigger screen, so I decided to look for a 13.3' screen size. At first I thought that this laptop was expensive, but when I compared it to other units of similar size and features, this was actually very attractively priced (bought on special at a local M&B store for $800 plus tax). What really made me go back to the store and buy it after reviewing all the alternatives is the fact that I had it in my hands and felt its weight, or lack thereof. It is so light that it reminds me of fake laptops they use at furniture stores. After several weeks I could tell why this one won CNET's Editor's Choice. After several months everything it is mostly great except that I'm still not too fond of its keyboard.

This laptop is lighter and much faster than Macbook Air and faster and much lighter than the 13.3' Macbook Pro, not to mention double the amount of RAM and hard drive capacity. At 3.2 lbs, this is the second lightest 13.3' laptop, still with full blown 32 nanometers Intel Arrandale Core i3 CPU with built in graphics and 5-8 hrs of battery life... It has similar capacity and speed but longer battery life than the barely lighter 3 lbs Sony VAIO of same size, but you will pay more than double for the Sony. The spanking new Intel Wireless Display technology is also a good perk, but be aware that you need the receiver on the other end (I believe you can get Netgear's device for under $100) or one of the brand new and expensive TVs that have this feature built in.

Many other laptops have an incomplete 802.11 b/g/n wireless network card, thus lacking the capability to connect to a 5 GHz WiFi a/n access point. This one has a fully compliant 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi NIC and this is important to me because of the interference I'm getting from hundreds of access points in our building (I see over 40 from my condo), so I'm able to happily utilize the 5 GHz a/n radio on my dual band WiFi router, while everybody else is struggling with great interference on the few available 2.4 GHz b/g/n channels.

Long battery life is somehow achieved without using the slower ultra-low voltage CPU. The sticker at the store claims eight hours. I say maybe you'll get that when you're not doing anything processor-intensive and while using Toshiba's Eco power setting, which slows down the system a bit, but even on the normal balanced power settings and bright screen we still get five-ish hours, depending on the activity. Charging the battery while the system is working seems to take longer than on my 12' HP Elitebook 2540p work laptop. I can't figure out why, because this machine has the equal number of battery cells (6) and equally powerful 65W AC supply. Did Toshiba achieve a better battery capacity at same number of cells and weight and is that why this unit's battery lasts longer than on most similar laptops of other manufacturers? Still, the 12' HP 2540p has similar battery life, but charges much quicker (smaller screen?).

About Core i3 vs Core i5 and i7 humans can barely notice a 20% performance improvement on a computer. Core i5 and i7 CPUs do provide a bit higher speed particularly at turbo boost, but turbo works ONLY when another core is not busy, and at that time the single core is working at only up to 25% faster. I decided to stay at Core i3 and not be taxed the significant amount for the marginal benefit on a home laptop. According to my experience throughout the years, about 10% under the performance mountain top lies the treasure cave with best bargain systems that are still powerful enough to keep you zipping through the next 3-5 years without any disadvantage or impairment. Of course, if you're a gamer, you may be willing to go for 100% or so higher price for that 10-25% increase in speed, but that definitely doesn't apply to a home laptop. However, if you really want to see the biggest return on upgrade investment, instead of upgrading to i5 or i7 CPU eliminate the biggest bottleneck and upgrade the hard disk to a solid state HDD. That alone is the biggest performance boost you can give to your laptop and I might do the same soon because I've seen SSD drives do miracles.

Although very light and thin, this thing still has a DVD burner. Blu-ray would be a great plus, but you benefit from Blu-ray movies when watching them on a 1080p big screen (40' or more) HDTV, which usually already has a dedicated Blu-ray player or PS3 connected to it. This 13.3' screen, although at 720p HD, is too small to experience the full benefit of the Blu-ray movies. If you really want the high definition movies and the higher data capacity of the BD technology, this may be a deal breaker and you may go with one of the 14' Samsungs or lower end Sonys at a similar price. I wonder if an upgrade to Blu-ray could be purchased from Toshiba, but considering their loss during the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD, I understand their lag with this feature.

After two months I'm still not entirely used to this keyboard. It's not as good as on HP business laptops or Thinkpads.

No keyboard backlight or LED

Instead of being in the center, the touchpad is slightly moved to the left. This is causing occasional sudden and unintentional moves of my cursor to a different position whenever my palm touches the touchpad.

Some reviewers have complained about the fan noise under normal load I can only hear it at night when it's absolutely calm and quiet, but it's not loud enough to bother me. If you're in your 20s the high pitch sound coming from the fan may bother you, but at 45 I can barely hear it as it's virtually ultrasound. But now about work under heavy loads:

I noticed recently that the system can get significantly louder and warmer (not lap-comfortable without a lapdesk) when the CPU/GPU is heavily taxed as in Google Earth flight simulator mode with 3D landscapes and objects enabled and set to max. This also happens when I'm viewing HD Flash video on it.

All in all, this is the winner. Not perfect, but close to it, considering its cost, weight, size, power and features. It can get loud and warm when under heavy load, but most of the time it stays quiet and cool. Recently I've seen this unit priced at about $1,100 which is $300 more than what I paid for it. At that price I'd think twice, particularly when similar model with faster Core i5 CPU (model r705-p41) can be bought for way under $1,000, so first check the faster model's price at Toshiba Portégé R705-P41 TruBrite LED 13.3-Inch Laptop (Metal/Blue). If you can get either one for about $800 it's a no brainer. Go for it.

This computer is everything you could ask for in a laptop: Fast, extremely light weight, plenty of RAM, large HDD, relatively small size (13.3). I have been very happy with overall performance.

However, two issues are worth noting on the negative side: Fan noise and durability.

The fan noise has been noted on many sites. Some reviewers are not bothered by it, some are. I am one of the people that is bothered by it. It's not terribly loud, but it is a unique frequency that stands out from other ambient noises. After hearing it the first time, my brain locked on to it and it's all I hear when the machine is operating in my home office. I have another computer humming away with normal fan noise (air flow through an opening), and other low level noises, but I hear this over everything. It's tolerable but not desirable.

Durability This one is less tolerable and I am currently working with Toshiba to repair under warranty (with no luck so far). The primary attractive feature of this computer for us was the light weight. No other laptop at the time ( Aug/10) had the same functionality and light weight with a built in DVD drive. Unfortunately, the tradeoff for weight appears to be strength of materials and durability. This laptop is cherished by the owner and carried in a very protective laptop bag at all times when not in use. When in use, it is cleaned with a soft cloth daily and dust and debris blown out of the keyboard and all openings by compressed air at least once a week. The computer is pampered basically. I mention this as background for the issue of durability I am/we are experiencing which is a cracked bezel around the screen and a loose hinge cover on the left side. The hinge cover is not much of an issue, but being loose they do add a feeling and appearance of poor workmanship. The main issue is the bezel around the screen. The laptop was never dropped, bumped, jarred, or otherwise abused in any way whatsoever. However, a thin horizontal crack developed in the bezel on both the left and right side of the screen at exactly the same level top to bottom, just below the rubber bumpers on the inside of the lid/cover. Within a few days of noticing the crack, lifting the screen to use the computer found a small piece of the bezel material to the left of the keyboard. The left side bezel had shed a small piece of material that included the rubber bumper from the area immediately above the original crack. The material is extremely thin and brittle and leads me to believe the rest of it may soon follow and deteriorate in time. There are no marks on the outer lid anywhere that would indicate even a slight impact on either side. If you look at the construction of the screen inner and outer covers, you will see the inner could not be damaged in this manner (by impact) without damage to the outer. It appears a combination of the rubber bumper position and screen/lid flex, has caused stress fractures of the inner bezel on both sides. The bezel is very thin and apparently (from the piece missing on the left side) also very brittle. We have never had any issues with workmanship on any HP we have owned (3 different laptops, all HP). This is our first Toshiba, and so far, Toshiba has been less than sympathetic and even ....less than polite on the telephone when discussing the issue. I'll keep trying though because I honestly believe (I know) this is an inherent flaw with the design/materials of this laptop. I'll give Toshiba customer service the benefit of the doubt and assume I just encountered an employee in a bad mood.

Summary: The fan makes a unique whine but it's tolerable by most people. It appears durability has been sacrificed for weight. I would highly recommend any additional warranty coverage that includes damage. This will let you avoid the argument I am currently having with Toshiba regarding the seemingly spontaneous degradation of the screen bezel or any other issues that may appear. However this will dramatically increase the overall cost of ownership. Alternatively, you could always use it as a desktop to avoid stressing it....

I assume this issue would apply to the entire light weight line.

I am not a highly technical person but I like my computer to do certain things well. It has to be light. This one at 3.2 lbs is light. It has the new Intel i3 chip, strong enough for me. 500 GB harddrive is sufficient, 4 GB memory is enough. It has a good camera, decent sound system. If one listens with ear pieces, it sounds just fine. Battery life is around 5 hours (it ran for 8 1/2 hours the first day I turned it on). Some people complain about the keyboard but I like it a lot. It has everything I need at large enough size so my fingers don't mistype. I purchased it around $850 and have seen it advertised at $799, a fair price to me. I use the camera with Skype and it works well.

I don't have anything negative to tell you about this laptop. It is my first Toshiba and frankly I like it more than the several HPs I owned before. The only minor minus will be that it gets quite hot but all other laptops do that also. Placing it elevated or on a laptop table helps to dissipate the heat.

This is my first laptop, and I couldn't be happier with it. I bought it because it has Intel's Wireless Display, which allows me to sit in my recliner and watch what I'm doing on TV with the Netgear Push2TV adapter. Super cool, and it works! But even without that, this is just a great laptop...lightweight, quiet and fast. I'm a long-time desktop user, so the keyboard takes some getting used to, but after a few weeks I am totally comfortable with it. I got mine from Best Buy for $749, so don't pay more than that for it. And believe me, the Wireless Display is a great feature. I put the laptop on my kitchen table, sit in my recliner 6 feet away with a wireless mouse, and move the mouse around on the arm of my chair to watch it on TV. I watch streamed football games, TV shows, streamed movies, YouTube videos, instructional videos...all from the comfort of my recliner on my 52" TV. Video quality is very good. I will say that the advertised 8-hour battery life is extreme; it's more like 4 or 5. But overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would do it again in a heartbeat. If you're on the fence, go for it...you'll love this laptop!

I purchased this laptop for development in college while getting my CS degree, and so far I have been nothing but impressed. The power management software is very useful for creating profiles, the fans are next to inaudible, it's very quick and I rarely need to reboot. Awaking from hibernation/standby is faster than any other laptop I've used.

This laptop's keyboard is one of it's stand out features, and is honestly the best keyboard I've ever used on a laptop, period. The keys are strong and firm, and you don't have to worry about feeling like you're going to break them by typing too hard. The BIOS option to switch Fn and Ctrl was also very helpful.

For any Linux users I have 11.04 ubuntu installed in a dual boot configuration, and from what I can tell everything so far has been working out of box.

So far there are really only two downsides to this laptop that I've noticed so far, and they are both very minor. The physical switch that enables/disables the wifi radio on the right side of the unit is very difficult to toggle. It's recessed into its little whole just slightly too much, and at least with mine, is so stiff that I feel like I'm going to break it when switching off and on. The keyboard function of toggling the radio works just fine, so I don't really use the physically switch.

Secondly, the screen tends to get marked up by the keys when it is closed and transported in a carrying bag or backpack. You can usually notice a small little circle imprint on the display from the tracking circle on the keyboard. Again, these are very small complaints and overall have been incredibly satisfied.

While I needed something mobile to carry for school, I also needed a workhorse, because I'm using it for my research and dissertation. It's light enough (although a little heavier than I'd hoped) and I love the feel of the keyboard (important because I will be typing several thousand pages by the time I finish). The touch-pad isn't slick and shiny like most touch-pads so it's easier to use (and I hope it won't wear out like my other touch-pads have which makes them virtually impossible to use). Love love love the light for the keyboard! The higher screen resolution is brilliant. I've been on the receiving end of the video camera and the video is crystal clear. This is also important because we live across the ocean from my family who want to see my kids as often as possible. All-in-all an excellent purchase so far (about a month post purchase).

The ThinkPad T420 4177-QKU is a great Notebook PC, I actually have only had it for less than 24 hours but I have to say it is one of the best laptops I have owned. It is the first Lenovo I have owned but the ThinkPad class of laptops has always been my "dream computer".

Now on to the Computer:

The computer seems powerful, I have not even installed Microsoft Office on it yet, but I will soon.

A lot of people claim the screen is extremely blurry or grainy, but it is just the matte anti-glare coating. I have to say it is noticeable but is not nearly as bad as my HP TouchSmart Tablet. I have yet to try the computer outdoors because it is cold here but I will update if I do. However, the matte coating is great if you have to work under those awful florescent lights.

This computer was bought for school purposes (History Major) so no games or hard core graphics, so I think the i5 processor is good enough. I do plan on buying 4gb of ram just for the heck of it.

Over all this is a great computer for work or school. Windows 7 is a great OS, and I would recommend this to any college student.

I had Windows 7 Home Premium, 500GB hard drive, 4GBs of RAM, and a 16" screen. It plays 720p videos great. I was even able to run Combat Arms on it.(Although only on small maps.) It has 4 USB ports and wireless N for fast wireless connection. I personally don't like having my hardware partitioned out so I combined all the partitions into one.

Con:

This notebook has 2 things that bother me about it. The touch pad is VERY sensitive. I can't tell you how many times ive made mistakes because the back of my thumb barely touched the touch pad. Also, the sound card has a very low buzzing noise coming from the left channel. Now after doing some experimenting I found that its caused by the wireless network. If I were to disable the wireless the noise went away.

Thoughts:

All and all the notebook is great buy for the price. I did a lot of research into brands and Asus came at the top of the list almost every single time in hardware quality and longevity. Now this notebook be refurbished it does not come with the warranty you would normally get with a new notebook but, it does come with a 3 month warranty. If you looking for a cheap notebook to do your school work or any type of writing this notebook is for you. If you like games and watch high quality HD videos this notebook is not the best choice.

I bought this computer back in April of 2010, and I have to say, the computer is pretty good. Even after about 7 months, the computer still starts up and shuts down quickly.

As for those who have encountered the hissing noise, I have a solution that will get rid of the noise (it was annoying for me through the headphones, especially).

In the bottom right corner of the desktop, right-click on the sound and click "Playback devices." Then right-click (or double-click) on Speakers and click "Properties." Then go to the Levels tab, go down to "PC Speaker," and click on the little blue speaker button to mute, and then turn the knob all the way down just for good measure.

Please know this is a great little computer. I got it for my daughter to take to college. She loves it. Please just realize that the one Amazon sells here is NOT NEW, but REFURBISHED!!!! They don't say that in their description, which is just wrong! When it arrived "refurbished" was written all over the box. I called Amazon customer service and they stated there was a problem with this page and that they were very sorry, that it was a mistake. I notice it still sells for the higher price of a NEW one and still doesn't say "refurbished" in the discription. This is just not right! I might even have considered keeping it because the price was actually good, but there were no instruction books, papers or any kind of documentation enclosed. I sent it back and went to Best Buy to buy it, but had to pay more. SO BUYER BEWARE!!!

A couple of minor scratches but overall just like new. No OS disks or paperwork in the box. You should make an immediate restore/backup disk(s). Don't throw away the box before getting the warranty and support contact sheet from the bubble pack on the OUTSIDE of the box.

This laptop is not a speed demon in any particular area, but is well rounded in all but gaming. It's the ideal multi-media personal server. The screen/picture is awesome. Streaming high definition Netflix looks as awesome. The built in wifi has the potential throughput of 65Mbps thanks to the 80211n Atheros adapter. It chews through 720P. You are not going to be bragging on any synthetic benchmarking community bulletin board while you are on this machine, but at this price it is an amazing work/school/muti-media machine. The 5400rpm 500gb hard drive scores 5.9 in the Windows 7 experience index benchmark, with the dual core penryn based 2.4 gig pentium processor scoring 5.6. This is basically a Core2Duo processor with with less l2 cache and some of the power savings features disabled. The system runs quietly in the 30C temperature range. We have 2 of these laptops in our family. Both were purchased refurbished from Amazon, and both have run flawlessly out of the box. The refurbish model didn't have too much in the way of bloatware, but I did delete alot of the Asus software. My K60I boots to the desktop in 46 seconds.

If you are not a video/photo/music editor, or someone looking for a gaming machine, this little darling should serve you very well. Neither myself or my Uncle have regretted our purchase for a moment, while we have crowed about the money we saved, and how awesome our laptops are many times.

Okay so this laptop is truly awesome after 2 months of use (EDITED), the battery life is awesome, I was in a study group for college and some girl asked me "uh, oh! youre gonna need a outlet soon, right?" and I said "No, I have 30% left.....which means 3 hours!" The best charge I've gotten is about 9 1/2 hours, they're really not lying, just make sure you have it on power saver mode. I dont really see that much of a performance difference when it's on this setting.

This laptop is nothing described as in the other review giving it one star. Maybe manufacturing on that one went bad, but otherwise it is an excellent laptop. I just got it today though, but I wanted to save it from that horrible review, only bad things are the way oily fingerprints show up on the outside, but its better than having a cheapy glossy finish. So just wipe it off every so often. I will update this review in the time being as I use the laptop more.

Wow what a unique laptop, the bamboo finish, or shall I say wood!, is awesome. It may attract a little bit more oil from your fingers, but a great sacrifice instead of having to deal with a cheapy glossy finish on the wood. The laptop is fast, haven't noticed any glitches. The touchpad buttons are firm, not hard to push, I find that I am in more control and that I'm not accidentally pressing random things because of the sensitive buttons. The chiclet keyboard is awesome, way better than any other keyboard I've usedespecially the mac. The sound system is good, even better with headphones plugged in for some reason. Graphics....awesome. Numberpad--rare and convenient.....ASUS Expres AMAZING! its so cool is an alternate boot up option if you dont have time to wait and you can access all that you need to in literally 2 seconds, no joke at all. Way to stand out ASUS.

So this laptop is not only flashy and unique, but it's functionality is nothing but exceptional. So glad I trusted my instinct.

The bamboo really gives the laptop a unique feel and is sure to impress your friends. The keyboard is pretty easy to type on and has a nice feel. I really like the multi-touch pad as well. You can use 1, 2 or 3 fingers. The trackpad buttons are pretty stiff, but you really don't need to use them once you learn to use multi-touch.

The system multitasks beautifully and runs very cold. You can't even hear the fan running with most tasks. The battery life is decent. I'll get about 4 or 5 hours in the normal power mode, but if I switch to the "super hybrid engine" I get closer to 8 or 9 hours.

I've had the system for 6 days now, and for the most part, the system runs beautifully. The biggest problem I've had so far is that the keyboard fn shortcuts are buggy. When I use the keyboard buttons to mute the sound, It won't become unmuted until after I restart the system. The volume buttons also randomly stopped working, so I had to go to the ASUS website and download new drivers, which fixed that problem.

I'll add updates if I run into any more problems.

New glitch: The headphone jack doesn't work. I reinstalled the drivers, but it didn't work. I seem to be having a lot of audio issues with this laptop.

I have had this computer out of the box for about three days now. I like the look of the machine (it does not seem cheap as previous poster stated). Fast, keyboard is nice, high resolution camera is nice.

One problem to let people know about: It comes with some pre-loaded Oberon games (the Oberon Game Park). Unfortunately, Oberon has bad software and when you uninstall these games it causes a problem with the registry and affects a few other programs/functions.

My google chrome browser ceased to function and the audio hotkeys on the keyboard also stopped working. By reinstalling chrome and the audio and keyboard drivers, both problems were fixed. Just something to be aware of. If you don't mind having a few mediocre games on your computer it is nothing to worry about.

The machine itself is of high quality and runs well. It was easy to reinstall Windows to factory settings by hitting F9 at startup, something I appreciated when I was dealing with the software glitch.

I've been using this laptop for 4 days now and here's my experience so far:

The good:

-Right off the bat, this thing is BEAUTIFUL. The pictures on amazon don't do it justice. They're too dark and don't really show off how nice the wood grain looks.

-The chiclet keyboard is responsive and comfortable.

-The touchpad is a very nice touch. People have complained about the button being hard to push, but they're probably used to having two separate buttons for right/left click. If you push toward the edge, clicking is very easy.

-It's very fast.

The bad:

-The numeric keypad doesn't really add anything. It just makes the right side of the keyboard feel pretty cramped.

-The screen, while great when viewed straight-on, has a very limited viewing angle.

-The HDMI port is okay as long as the machine stays perfectly still. A couple of small moves both caused it to disconnect the TV as an external monitor, resulting in a lag as it moved all windows back to the laptop's screen, then another lag as it rediscovered the TV, at which point I had to manually move all the windows back.

Other thoughts:

-The Express Gate is a cool idea in theory, but I don't really see a practical use for it. It doesn't take much time at all to just boot into Windows.

This notebook is vented on the left side and draws air through the bottom. If you plan to use it on your lap, it's a very good idea to invest in a lap desk to keep it elevated it puts out VERY hot air.

So many things to give me smiles about this purchase.

1. I received my purchase the day after it shipped

2. The "packaging" of the ASUS was impressive. Computer was in a really nice box that was well padded and kept my purchase protected.

3. I really appreciated that all of the stickers (i.e intel, windows, etc.) were not applied directly to the computer and instead were applied to the protective plastic.

4. The computer was not loaded with a lot of unnecessary software.

5. Really like Windows7. Easily updated to Windows7 Pro. It is very intuitive.

6. Computer is quiet and does not run hot.

7. Battery is long lasting.

8. Start-up is less than a minute.

I've been using the computer for about a month and will update if I experience anything negative or have any problems with Asus directly.

Dell's warranty is terrible. If you have any problem with your laptop, they will not help you. I owned a 14x R1. The craftsmanship of Alienware line is gone. Don't want you be the next victim. Don't believe me? Just go Google M14x hinge problem in google. You will know why. I have the hinge problem.

Update 1: I try to fix the hinge problem myself, so I opened up the monitor . Both hinges are mounted to two tiny magnesium plates. The problem is, the left hinge is 2 mm thick with a big cut out in the middle, and right one is a solid 6 mm plate. The uneven force distribution is what made the hinge fail. I try to look for replacement in ebay(search M14x hinge and see it for yourself). It seems like the R2 has the same design. $5 epoxy glue fixed it for me, don't know how long that last.

I've been a Dell customer for over 10 years. Purchased an Alienware M14x R2 February 2013 to replace my old Alienware M11x. I loved everything about it... until a month ago. Less than 6 months after spending close to $1,700 on a top of the line gaming computer, which was extremely well taken care, it broke. During late June/early July I noticed that the left hinge was getting stuck and making a popping sound whenever the laptop was closed and/or opened. Two weeks after the noise/problem began, the left hinge popped out of place and split the case (around the screen) apart. The laptop still worked fine, however, I decided to call Dell customer service and get it fixed. It is after all a six month old laptop, that is still under warranty until 2015. Apparently I was wrong. Yes, it's under warranty. But after customer support checked it, they informed me that the repair is not covered under the warranty that I have (apparently I needed the complete customer subscription). I asked what could cause a hinge on a laptop, which is less than 6 months old, to break and was told that it was MY fault. That I mishandled the laptop and that I would have to pay for them to fix it. I was also informed that there have been no complaints (at all) on the M14x hinges, however, a quick search on Google will show that this is not the case. There are hundreds of other complaints, which Dell has chosen to ignore. This is the first time that I've had problems with Dell customer service. I never expected to pay top dollar for a "quality" laptop and have it break so quickly from normal wear and tear. Do yourself a favor and do a quick search on "Alienware M14x hinge" and decided for yourself. I'm personally never again purchasing from Dell. I rather take my money and business to a retailer that listens to their customers and sells a quality product.

I would like to say this laptop runs great for any medium setting games you wish to play. The custom lighting is also very fun to fool around with. It does its job but not as much as you would expect for the price tag. You are definitely paying for the name brand.

However, the most important part is the fact that this laptop is faulty. The left hinge breaks after a certain amount of time no matter how well you treat your computer. It just happens. The real bummer is that Dell customer service refuses to acknowledge this problem and forces a hefty price tag to fix it. Also, this computer seems to have an overheating problem.

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST IF YOU EVEN CONSIDER BUYING THIS PRODUCT OR ANY ALIENWARE/DELL PRODUCTS!

I have been an owner of this exact product for the past 3 months, and all i can say is it has become a living nightmare! I bought this product to function as my main computer for both college and gaming, and when researching this product all i did was look at the good reviews and didn't pay much attention to the bad ones, and friends telling me not to buy it. When i first received this laptop and tried to download a game from disc, it would not and i needed to restart the computer to make it load from disc every time. If you have this problem too when you get this, only things to come in the near future are blue screens related to the motherboard, and by then it will be too late to get a refund.

For me, it has been only 3 months, i have gone through over 300 minutes of tech support, 2 motherboard replacements(each time needing a technician to come and do the replacement), and now a complete computer replacement coming while i have to deal with a computer with no sound and a broken graphic chip for 10+ days, yet its to hard for dell to give a refund. If this was just 1 motherboard, i would say, oh one faulty piece of equipment and no worries, but 3, factory new, BROKEN motherboards, all with the same issues, and its clear they have low quality standards for such and expensive piece of equipment.

All i can say, is if you read this, and you decide not to buy this product or ANYTHING from dell, then i guarantee you i have just saved you money and frustration. And if you did buy this product and have no problems. I am glad you had a good experience, but the fact i am not the only one with this type of problem on such and expensive piece of hardware, is reason enough to see that Dell has quality problems and do not strive for a uniform product standard and see our difference in opinions as prof of my claim.
