I bought a G6-1d73us in July 2012, feeling confident I'd get a phenomenal PC for the price (since I like HP products and have been a devoted customer for years). The laptop has good specs and is definitely a step up from my last HP laptop (whose processor is out of date and too slow to accommodate my current needs). This G6 met my expectations EXCEPT for one thing: I've noticed a substantial decrease in the quality of the sound / audio since July (quality that seems to decrease daily). It's been 6 months and I can't even watch or listen to anything without my headphones on. Without the headphones, the sound is so dim one can barely hear anything (even when there's no other phonic distraction in the background). It's a huge inconvenience for me to have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. My warranty hasn't expired yet, thankfully; I'd be even more frustrated if this had happened to me post-warranty. After a bit of research online, I discovered that many people had encountered this problem --probably a hardware malfunction (and not a driver problem). Had I known my sound would die in a matter of months, I wouldn't have purchased this particular model.

I am badly disappointed in my Lenovo X230 Tablet. I received it and set about adding my standard programs with high expectations. At each shut down I had the standard messages from Microsoft updates asking not to shut down until the updates were complete. I had other updates run automatically. The result was the touchpad and fingerprint reader stopped working. After three calls to Lenovo Tech Support, many more updates of drivers, the system was not useable. I wiped the disk twice, reinstalled from the Lenovo resue disk, but again updates were required and I did them and had the same problem. It's not worth the time and trouble! Also, the edges of the touchscreen area are not sensitive and a finger touch will not pull out the menu nor will the pen in done cases.

Buyer beware of buying the new model until all updates are through being made.

I bought this laptop based on the previous reviewer's comments, thinking that I may have found a decently priced laptop great for my needs. I took advantage of buying the computer at a local Brandsmart at a cheaper price(hint hint) than Amazon prices. It's light weight, large screen, and the keyboard is very easy to handle.

My concerns after using my laptop for the past week:

1. The computer runs pretty slow for typical web browsing sites; I was very surprised by this because this is a brand new laptop and shouldn't have this issue as though it was infected with a virus that will slow down the processor.

2. There isn't a notification that warns of low battery life before shutting down in the middle of my work. I checked the settings and it is set to show a warning but for some reason doesn't show up at all.

3. The battery life isn't that impressive. I've had other laptops that I've used off and on, shutting it down when not in use, and this laptop doesn't seem to last more than a few hours of minimal use.

For the price, it's okay. But I am disappointed with the speed and battery life.

Purchased as a general purpose home computer for myself (53) and spouse. Never purchased computer online or through Amazon before this. Took the chance and am I glad I did. I write this having just been cut off (by phone) with Toshiba's tech support. (Well, actually it was the call center, to which the manager had transferred me in error). I am sending back this computer for the second time in the last two weeks, having purchased it in February (after doing considerable research). It had a myriad of problems including: 1) a non-functioning USB port, 2) a tendency to lock up and then not shut down on command, forcing a shut down by pushing the on/off switch, 3) and on-again-off-again CD burner, 4) an inability to send a daily backup to the reserve hard drive, 5) an inability to send anything greater than three or four songs worth of file space to the back-up drive at one time. With seven or eight songs, it would lock up, and I'd have to go through the shut-down process again.

I got back the computer four days ago. Toshiba had replaced the USB, the optical drive, and the hard drive. Wow, sounded good! But most of the same problems reappeared. Maybe if I had a 32 bit version of Windows 7 instead of 64 bit. Ah, but that's not a possibility, according to the manager I spoke with. My option is to keep sending it back till they repair it, all the way till my warranty runs out.

To say I am angry is putting it mildly. From my experience, I'll never go near Toshiba's laptops again. Maybe that's unfair, but this laptop is screwing up my life to a considerable extent, since I spend many hours a day on the computer.

This is my first laptop and I can recommend it. I like that it has the numeric pad on the side, it's very practical. I can say I'm happy with it. When I took it out of the box, I really liked the color, of course it will depend if you like a black one or a metal looking laptop. For me, it gives it a sense of sophistication.

The other thing I notice is that it's bigger than I thought, it's larger because of the numeric pad. But that hasn't been so much of an issue for me yet.

As far as the Internet connectivity, it's fast. It works well on the battery alone and I really like Windows 7.

I also like that it has the vent on one side and it runs smoothly and quietly, you almost can't hear it.

The video quality is pretty good and the volume of the speakers is good, decent.

The only problems I had is that I haven't been able to install a program to do my translations because it's not compatible (Softni Subtitler Suite). It's a 32 bit program, and since this laptop is 64 bit I haven't found I way to install it.

The other thing I can say is that the mouse pad isn't so smooth, I'd rather use an external mouse, it's faster.

Overall, it's a great laptop and I'm really happy with it.

If you type this computer in a search engine you will see I am not the only one who hates this product and has the following problems: Keyboard goes out, hardware problem ubs/sound do not work (Bios problem). This computer has BOTH hardware and BIOS problems! So if you want a laptop that will lose the usb/ sound (not a hardware problem, it is a messed up BIOS problem so no fixing it) and love having to replace the keyboard, then buy it. If you want to actually USE the lap top you paid almost 500.00 for then buy anything but this!

This computer is fine...except for the audio. Yes, you read that correctly. Despite the fact that one of this computer's big features is Beats Audio, the volume on songs and videos has a mind of its own and fluctuates all the time. HP recently released a driver to fix the problem, which temporarily worked, but the volume fluctuation began to creep back into the audio about a week ago and is once again in full swing. According to the HP Support Forum, the company continues to work on finding a solution. Regardless of whether the problem gets permanently fixed, I find it totally unacceptable that a computer containing a feature geared towards audio went onto the market with such an awful audio flaw. It's downright irresponsible on HP's part and I am severely disappointed.

I was still using an HP dv1170us (vintage 2005) which is still working fine, but it's dated. I wanted a replacement, so I bought its cousin, the HP dv6-7020 figuring it's close enough of a cousin to my old workhorse that I'd just settle into it like a favorite shirt.

A lot of my favorite features are still there. I like being able to turn off the touchpad (it's a double-tap in the upper left corner) when I'm using a trackball, and I like being able to cut the wi-fi off with a button press when I'm watching movies or listen to music (this is, after all, an entertainment laptop) and save some battery life. An improvement is no ports on the back of the laptop. That's a serious plus in a tight space like a library or on a plane when you can't have stuff sticking out of the back of the laptop and have it up against anything like a wall or seat.

Some features I liked are gone. Instant Play is history, no more turning on the laptop to just use as DVD player hardware and double the battery life like my old laptop could do. However, the battery life is improved enough that it's about a wash. I really liked the actual latch to keep the lid shut too, but that's gone on the DV6-7020.

Some features I like are added, for example the HDMI output for a projector or HDTV, the fingerprint scanner for security and the built in webcam, none of which the old entertainment laptop had.

The laptop feels a bit big after the 14" notebook I've been used to, and the difference seems like a lot more than 1.6" going from a 14-inch notebook to a 15.6-inch laptop. I didn't think the added size would make much difference, but it's definitely noticed. It's okay, but this is as big as I'd go with a laptop. Anything bigger is overkill and sort of ruins the goal of portable devices (which is to be portable, of course).

My new laptop arrived today via UPS. I opened the box and had it set up in 5-10 minutes. It is awesome!!! Setting up all my user preferences now. Got on-line in 5 minutes. Got my hotmail & gmail up and running in 10 minutes. Sounds great, looks great. Really happy with it so far. If I run into any problems, I will adjust my rating, otherwise it is perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I love it!!!!!!!!! Screen is really big 15" and the keyboard is just right. Love the separate number key pad. Typing is a breeze and keys are all logical and feels great. I recieved this item yesterday and i found nothing is working even the processor. Its completely dead. i just wasted my time calling the HP support team. I just returned this item to amazon. I didnt expect this kind of item from Amazon. They didnt even tested the basic things for the laptop. Beaware of HP laptops, dont expect that everything from HP will work. The customer service can help you only when your machine UP.Unlike Dell, HP will not be giving any door service and you have to ship the new item back to HP for service which is even more horrible.

Purchased HP DV6 7020 US new in the winter of 2012. Barely used it. By June, 2013,the screen would go black and stay black, and the laptop suffered from repeated "unexpected shutdowns". Went round and round with HP tech support in India for hours on end as they tried and failed to resolve the problems remotely. Sent it to the HP repair center in Texas to be fixed. They did the same thing that phone support had done return to factory setting, update bios, reinstall OS. Same problems within hours of getting it back from HP. Finally, I got approval from the HP repair center to send it back to HP to repair but then, they never sent me the mailing label and did not return repeat phone messages (to the HP repair facility in Texas). So, I wrote a letter to HP corporate consumer affairs in Palo Alto. This must have gotten someone's attention, because I got a phone call and an e-mail from a case manager with their Escalation Team. The case manager was quite helpful and orchestrated the repair that I had been promised. So, I shipped it back to HP in Texas yet again for another go at repair. This time, they replaced the MOBO. Got it back and...the battery would not charge but there was no indication from the monitoring system that there was a charging fault. Output of charger tests as good with a VOM, so the battery is just not charging. I suspect it has something to do with the new mother board that HP installed. Upshot: back to HP for another fix. The laptop has spent more time in transit and in the hands of HP than with me for a couple of months. When it works, it is actually a fine computer with good specifications and some helpful HP user interface software. But, it has proven to be quite unreliable. I have owned computers for over 20 years and have never seen a product with so many reliability issues. But, I'm stuck with it now.

This computer is not the fastest out there, nor does it have the most advanced features. But it's great if you need a very portable laptop and you don't have the budget to buy a macbook air. Though you can buy cheaper laptops, at similar specs, this laptop falls into the 'ultrabook' category as defined by Intel. The benefits to an ultrabook is the thin size, light weight, and long battery life. This is not even the best ultrabook out there, but it is one of the cheapest of those. The majority of the ultrabooks seem to be 900 and up, making this sort of a 'budget' ultrabook, if not a budget laptop.

I ordered this for my dad, who needed a new laptop for his work. Some notable points about it.

Design:

The laptop looks sleek, with a great finish that doesn't seem to make fingerprints too noticeable. The keyboard is a chiclet style -similar to the macbook air that this category of laptops attempts to follow Which means it is more shallow than the usual keyboard. I do find it easy to type with, though it does take a bit of getting used to. It looks very nice, in a subdued sort of way. I wish the screen was a higher definition, but oh well.

Portability:

One of the main reasons my dad chose this laptop. It is not as thin as some of the better ultrabooks, but it's thinner than the standard laptops, and -muchlighter.

Usability:

As the other reviewer said, the boot time is slower than I expected from an SSD/HDD hybrid. Yet, it certainly boots faster than the 5 year old laptop it is replacing! Once on, it runs smoothly and quickly for office tasks, and streaming videos. The fans seem quiet, though I haven't tried to task them with anything pushing the computer's limits. It's not a computer for gaming, and I'm not even attempting it. It seems fine for daily use / buisness/ school etc. The Battery lasts about 5 to 6 hours of streaming video and web surfing, etc.

I don't use trackpads if I can avoid it, usually with a wireless mouse, so I can't really say whether that is bad or good. My dad says he preferred the old trackpad he used, but that this one is good enough.

Overall:

I would recommend this laptop to someone who wants all the portability advantages of an ultrabook, but doesn't necessarily need something with super high performance. It's really a pretty decent little laptop. Comparatively, you might also like the Zenbook prime UX32a from ASUS, which is a similarly priced ultrabook that also has an HDD/SSD hybrid.

This is a good Ultrabook, but not excellent. HD makes noise sometimes (including some "clicks", which makes me wonder about its health; that I'll figure out just with time), more than the standard for most laptops. Touchpad sometimes fails on recognizing taps on some areas (it can be adjusted on its settings to make it work smoother, yet this is not among the best touchpads you'll find around). Battery life is fair good (does not last as long as the brand says), not excellent but not bad. Backlighting is a great feature that many Ultrabooks miss, makes it a plus for this one. It's not the lightest Ultrabook, but is light enough, easy to carry. It doesn't heat up much, what is very good. Its case is awesome. For about 650 dollars, it's a good deal.

Update (Jan 23rd 2013): The hard disk stopped making noise, whatever's the reason. It's been working good so far. SSD drive really makes a difference, this Ultrabook boots very quickly. Touchpad (even after updating its driver) still has issues, it freaks out sometimes, requiring me to restart the machine.

Someone has written in a review that this ultrabook actually doesn't have backlight as announced by Amazon. I confirm what's announced on the page here, it DOES have backlight, and it works very well (it's a smart backlight, after sometime without using the keyboard, the light turns off automatically).

When buying this I sought a light laptop still running Windows 7 that would compare with an Asus UL30 I bought a couple of years ago. I bought the Toshiba because it appeared a good value and of comparable quality. I disregarded several luke-warm reviews in computer magazine websites. That was a mistake.

I will say the Toshiba is attractive, has a bright and sharp screen, and boots and closes down quickly.

The keyboard does not have a positive feel for a touch typist, and I was annoyed to find that in order to get a function key to operate in the expected way--say F8, I had to hold down the key and then hit F8. This (mis)behavior can be corrected in the BIOS, but should not be the default. Also the proper names of the keys F1, F2 ... are dimmed out and hard to see. I use function keys a lot, and resent this stupid system.

The trackpad works well enough, but the mouse keys are integral with it, and this makes them much less easy to use and one is never certain they have "taken".

Most laptops have a removable battery. Not this one. If the battery fails, you will have to return to machine to Toshiba. The power supply brick lacks a pilot light.

Most laptops have a hatch on the bottom giving access to the RAM storage area, so you can add memory when necessary. Not this one. You must remove the whole bottom, at the minimum, finding screws hidden under feet and labels.

It's not unique to Toshiba, but this machine comes loaded with crapware. The hard drive has only a C: partition, not an optimal setup for a drive of this size.

But yes, it works, but if I kept it, I would be chronically annoyed at myself for buying this. Instead, I am buying an Asus U36SG-DS51, which I believe more suited to my needs.

I research as well prior to purchasing good Laptop/netbook and found the Toshiba was the right price /ratings. After using it for a month now it is a great product light weight screen jumps out at you easy to use and the 32 GB boot up is fast. One thing I found out when I upgraded to Windows 8 is the PC locked up we had to reset the PC I guess like most laptops with the battery inside there is a small hole under the back you have to hold in to rest. It wasn't the PC but Window 8 ...when you shut down Windows 8 you have to hold down the Shift Key as you shut down the reason is an app is running in background. This I hope an update will fix. JJJ Tech Pioneer(the supplier) was very helpful and would buy from them again thru Amazon...

i was kind of skeptical about this laptop because the price was pretty low for an ultrabook with features such as the toshiba u845-s406. i must say i was pretty surprised by its performance so far. it's very sleek and fast pretty light, and has good speakers. the only downside so far is it gets a little warm, and make some sound but still nothing to serious. although allot of people scared me with the non responding keyboard i found no problems with the keyboard but on the other hand the touchpad buttons can get frustrating. other than that the backlit keyboard is awesome-best feature if u ask me.

After doing research on this machine HP Elite WorkBook 8570w, Model # C6Y88UT, I purchased it from Fatech International, LLC. Received the machine quickly and noted that it DOES NOT HAVE A LIGHTED KEYBOARD. The HP web page I found my information in had the machine as having a back-lit keyboard and when I approached the seller they sent me a web page link that stated the machine had no back-lit keyboard, very confusing information from two different sites within the HP web page. Bottom line is, it works well, SO FAR, but has no back-lit keyboard. Recently I noticed the battery was coming lose from the bottom and I called HP. They started the process of replacing the whole bottom so the battery case will keep the battery in, it's been 11 day and I am still waiting for the part to repair the machine, Horrible Warranty Service from HP, hope it holds up otherwise. The lesson is Make Sure you get the Serial number to the machine so you can check it out with HP to see what equipment it has it's the only way to know exactly what it comes from. Many of these vendors sell many different configurations and many times and in my case Do Not List all the details, and many will tell you they do not have the serial number, this could be detrimental to your decision to purchase.... I am giving this machine a 3 because of the battery case issue and the lack of quick response by HP.

I've had a week to play around with my new Dell Inspiron 14r and I must say that I was disappointed at first. My initial reaction to this machine wasn't due cosmetic or ergonomic factors, but performance. On paper, this Dell should be able to handle basic web surfing while listening to mp3s with some Windows updates going on in the background. But no, this guy would almost slow to a crawl. Opening a simple application, such as Mozilla Firefox, would take around 10 seconds and would often freeze after loading. Even the boot-up time was a painful 2 1/2 minutes. Now this laptop has an index rating of 5.8, indicating that the dismal performance wasn't due to hardware. Which led me to the other possible culprit: software. Specifically, Dell's crapware, bloatware, etc. When this computer finally loaded, there was Dell DataSafe Online, Dell Data Backup and Dell Dock all running in the background. Manually uninstalling these through control panel gave no positive results. So I did a clean install of Windows 7 and let me tell you, it is a world of difference! The machine boots in about a minute, all applications open and load much quicker (without freezing) and this Dell can now adequately handle anything I throw at it. So if you're considering this laptop, just know that you may experience some performance issues thanks to the useless applications Dell has installed. If you're computer savvy, don't hesitate to do a clean install of Windows 7, you will be a much happier user. I know I am.

This review is based on initial impressions as we just received it today. This rev of the Inspirion is a step up in terms of build quality, compared to the 1st gen Inspirion 1440 we got 18 months ago. It feels more solid, the exterior plastic is a notch above the last version, and the chiclet keyboard is a definite improvement. The LED backlit screen is very nice. The Windows Experience Index rating is a respectable 5.6, reinforcing my impression that this laptop is more than adequate for email, browsing, and casual gaming.

I got a great deal on this through the Kindle with Special Offers, but I think it's also a good laptop for the regular price. It's about as light as you're going to get in this price range.

It's solid and works well. There wasn't nearly as much bloatware as other people are saying. I uninstalled all of it (especially Dell Datasafe but create your backup discs first), and it's very speedy now. I use it for occasional video editing, and it's sufficiently powerful for that.

The keyboard does occasionally miss a letter. It's happening much less often after a couple of months, but still once in a while.

My dad and I spent the time and bought this computer in may 10. I'm a college student. I was excited to have a computer that was new. When I got it there wasn't an issue but once I got to school by nov it was frustrating to use. My track pad just stops working and I thought oh well I have a back up anyway. But then it started freezing and listening to music or watching a video is unbearable it freezes the picture but the sound keeps going or it makes high pitched noises and then keeps going. Typing anything up means that it freezes and stops responding. Its really bad when you have something like music and word up and your righting a paper or on the internet. There are no viruses on it. 2 of my other friends had dells as well this model. they to experienced the same problem and actually had to buy new computers even though they werent a year old due to the same problems. There is no quality check on these laptops and they aren't reliable if you have to use it any day for a long time. Get something else these are all hardware problems

Great heat distribution, powerful processor fan. However i always recommend investing in a good laptop chill pad to help protect your investment and prolong life.

Good battery life(2-4hrs) for such a powerful PC. This is not a traveling laptop, it doesn't have an ultra 8-12hr battery life, don't expect to go all day long not plugged in. This is a powerhouse and needs to be plugged in.(also recommend turning on the feature where the battery doesn't charge beyond 80% to prolong life. its in there somewhere)

The bad:

CD rom drive. It works, well even but the button is so easy to hit it almost always pops out when moving it around. I know most laptops suffer from the cd rom button occasionally getting bumped and knocked out but on this one its ridiculous. Maybe if there was a recessed wall around it or something. its a complete pain.

Sound. This is a big one for me. Your speakers are slightly above worthless on this. They are tiny. tiny tiny. maybe 1inX0.5in on each side. that is it. its like having tweeters for your main sound. The speakers were the reason i removed a star. Do not expect any rich high-def sound with this laptop and there is plenty of wasted space they could have put bigger or more speakers. Headphones are better for sound quality but its not super rich sound due to sub-par sound card but with headphones the sound is much better, good enough for gaming

Graphics card. Your processor will outperform the graphics card. The card is of lower quality as well, so while your machine will handle all the superb graphics cranked to ultra high, your card will not display much change between the ulta high and around medium. So while your monitor is highdef, its not going to look super ultra pretty like you would see on today's common high-def TV. Its not a bad graphics card, just...average for budget laptop. This is a graphics card i would expect to find in a 300-500 laptop

Webcam. If this was the 2000-2010's it would be great but in today's technology my android has a better camera in it. Its good enough for say skype and things like that. Possibly for shooting medium-quality youtube movies but its nothing highdef(as claimed). 1.2MP is not much in today's world.

Hard drive is kinda slow at 5200 RPM but that doesnt matter too much, just takes longer to write bigger files to the drive. no real big thing only pointing it out

The ugly:

Of course, win8! Its horrible when you first get it, then tolerable when you learn how to deal with it. Its not good, boo on microsoft but im not holding this against samsung. You can tweak in a start bar to get the win7 feel back. Like i said...tolerable, nothing against the PC however since good luck finding any other new PC without win8.

Very minimalistic, stocky design. Its for lack of better words, dull. Quite featureless. No extra buttons for say hot-keying it does have a function keylock which is nice but no hot buttons for web-browser, or turning sound on/off. that sorta thing. As said earlier, a lot of wasted space that could of been filled with goodies but its not a big concern and shouldn't be yours.

No lights for lock keys. If you turn cap-locks on/off. or num or function there is no indicator light anywhere telling you its on. Which is really bad for say passwords where the keys are hidden and you cant figure out why Passw0rd isn't working when you are really typing pASSWRD. stupidity....and i just accidentally knocked open my cd-rom again, the new bane of my existence....ahh white people problems...

The pad can be a bit troublesome to learn its features at first but once you get it down its fine (like using 2 fingers for scroll and its inverted scroll) Im still working on that one.

Summary:

Im sure my review sounded much more harsh and critical than it is but really this is an awesome laptop, most of it was only to make people aware of some of the quirks ive encountered to help them understand what they receive. For me this is perfect. I wanted "the best bang for my buck" and i believe i got just that. for $700 this is an EXCELLENT laptop. Almost a gaming laptop. I truly do recommend this product for anyone seeking for a new laptop that wants a powerhouse on a budget because this product does deliver and samsung does have excellent customer service.

bought this laptop to help me edit photos I take as I am learning photography. I needed a laptop that could handle a photo editing program, such as PhotoShop, and lots of storage for saved photos. So far, it's working great for this purpose, with one exception: Windows 8 does not recognize .dat files of online photo editors such as Pixlr or Picmonkey, so that's a negative. Since I am use to Windows Vista, I was a little worried about getting a laptop with the new Windows 8 system, but once you get used to the vastly different arrangement of everything, it's pretty cool and easy to use. Overall, I am very satisfied.

Early 2013 I searched for exactly this configuration: 17", 8gb, core i7. The general starting price was $900. Not only is the Samsung 3 a bargain at $700, the remaining stats are almost to good to be true, 2.4ghz, 1tb, and so on.

My first impression usng the laptop was how fast it booted and how quiet it was. So far I haven't seen any issues installing the programs I usually use. It's exactly the laptop I wanted.

Then there's Windows 8: at first I hated it, but after delving deeper into it, the new possibilities are definitely intriguing. There are two "realms" in the new windows, the desktop which is the old interface and the app world, which is the new interface. Switching back and forth is cumbersome at first, and the default configuration has you falling out of desktop and into the metro interface quite often. But you can work pretty much the way you used to in Windows 7 by 1) learning the shortcuts, e.g.windows key+d returns you to desktop mode. 2) select desktop applications as default programs for common filetypes (pdf, jpg, mp3, avi, etc) if a metro app is the default you leave desktop mode when opening the object and don't return to desktop when closing. 3) I haven't done this yet, but you can also install one of a number of programs that reinstates the start menu and disables the charms menu. Though the start window is different than the old start menu, the search available there appears to me to do the job, so I will try it out some more before making this move.

What some people might miss: this dvd drive does not support blu ray, and the touch pad does not have an external switch to enable/disable.

All in all, a dream configuration at this price. I'm beginning to like Samsung.

This machine has a solid, all metal construction, with the only plastic being the keys and the bezel surrounding the screen. It is quite fast with a 2nd gen core i CPU and an AMD 6630 GPU. Keyboard is one of the best I've ever used, and easy match for any thinkpad, and backlit to boot. The 1600x900 matte screen is bright and very clear, but lacks color depth and contrast for any kind of high quality, color accurate display.

Other reviews have referred to it as flimsy but honestly, this is a pretty solidly built machine. Pressure on the back of the lid produces no distortions in the display, the base is very very stiff, especially for such a thin machine. Overall this machine reminds me of the T4x series thinkpad I used to own, but with a much brighter screen.

The speakers are terrible, even for a small 13" machine.

Linux compatibility has some issues that will hopefully get ironed out. Nothing that makes using it unusable, but a few things like the trackpad not having any suitable drivers, and really poor battery life (under linux) that make it a questionable choice if Linux on the go is your primary reason for using this machine.

I have used my laptop for a few days now and put it through some different trials. I tried videos, no problems, the only thing I wish could of been a little better was the sound of the speakers, but that's just the style of the laptop, it's hard to concentrate on both light and slim and at the same time have insanely large speakers. Next I inserted a few CD's including a movie which played perfectly and very clear, again the speakers are loud enough, just a little high pitched. You can always plug in a set of aux speakers if you wish. I installed a couple simple action games to make sure they would load and play and again no problem. I miss the old Sony power switch on the end of hinge, now it's like most other laptops positioned directly above the number keys. One more adjustment I had to make was getting used to a dedicated dvd eject button above the number keys again. You can't just push in on the dvd play door any more. Not a big deal and once I get use to it I'll be fine. I really like the 1600 resolution option on this particular model, if your wondering about text size, my philosophy is that you can always turn up the zoom of the page to 125% and most web pages still fit on the screen. The keyboard is nicely backlit and the keys have enough space between them so you don't hit two at once. I only wish with the new hinge setup that it didn't have that plat in the rear of the laptop, it's centered and runs better than half way across and sticks out a bout an 1/8". Not a big deal, but again, I liked the old style Sony hinge better personally. The new hinge cover is finished nicely though, looks like brushed metal. All of the input/output connections, except for the dvd player are on the right side of the laptop, I prefer this because it's easier for me to remember what side it's one. There are 3 indicator lights in the front left and look nice. There is a cap key light above the numbers. The laptop feels well made to me and I have no regrets.

I looked at all similar units in the 800 to 1200 price range, and chose this one for the keyboard ease, backlight, and robust construction. It is substantially made, mostly of aluminum/magnesium alloy, and the matte display is outstanding. Other units had the gloss and the glare is quite distracting. You pay a bit more for the Sony name, but it is worth it. It has the usual bloatware, but not overly intrusive, and one can disable these pesky bits easily. It is remarkably light, yet not flimsy in the slightest. I'm using it in my surgical office for electronic records, CT scan image review and other fairly processor intense tasks and the i5 handles all quite rapidly. I did up the RAM to 8mb, and that was $14 well spent! Got mine from 42nd street photo in NYC, and all is well. I would recommend it highly.

Have been using the machine for about a week now and its simply impressing me at every turn. After uninstalling the bulk of the Sony bloatware, Ive got it setup quite cleanly rather than doing a full clean windows install (as mentioned by another reviewer who was having difficulty).

Runs every game I've thrown at it in native resolution (1600x900) so far, including BF3 and MW3, which is jawdropping. Having a portable gaming system thats this svelte is going to make traveling a heck of a lot more enjoyable. It quite simply blows the doors off my last "thin and light" acer timeline.

All in all, a good purchase and a happy camper. Thanks Amazon for a great price versus the Sony website!

I was looking for a reasonable replacement for my terminally ill Sony Vaio that I bought just over 5 years ago. The specs on this Lenovo looked right in terms of speed, storage, size, and bells and whistles and was a 4-5 fold upgrade from the Sony. So far, I cannot complain. Set-up took less than 30 minutes. Microsoft Office Pro nice and fast (purchased separately). Browsing fast. Speaker/Sound nice for this size machine. Keyboard is a bit old school with the firmer key. I can see why some might not like that, but it feels like sturdy quality to me (back lit WOULD be nice). Windows 7 will take a little getting used to from XP. The notebook actually weighs 4.5 lbs, NOT 8 as advertised on this amazon product description, so that is a plus! 3 USB ports is a nice feature and I look forward to trying out a Bluetooth mouse. This Lenovo has a DVD/RW which it seems is uncommon for a Thinkpad this size and price. The fingerprint security system I am also liking so far. I also think it is somewhat upgradeable so if that is important to you, definitely check out the details. The only real compromise I made was in battery life; I was hoping to find a Lenovo with the 7-8 hour battery life, but this one advertises as 4.5 only (which is still a 2 hour improvement from my Sony). Some folks haven't been too impressed with the Intel Core i3 processor (it's a 3 out of 5 star rating) but this is faster than anything I've owned. Perhaps that will change as I collect more pics/videos/programs/junk over the coming years. Anyhow, the price WAS 599.99 plus 19.99 SH, but it looks like the price went up a few days ago on Amazon. J&R.com did have this for $550 and free next day shipping if you called them directly, but it recently sold out. Laptop Authority may still have it for around $560 with free shipping no tax. I think if you are looking for something that meets current competition standards with Windows under $600 this is the right machine for you.

All I can say is wow. For the price, this laptop cannot be beat. Even from the beginning everything was great. Amazon shipped this computer in only 5 days for super saver shipping (7-14 days). When I got the laptop everything was neatly and securely packaged, with nothing damaged. The laptop looks great too, a deviation away from the usually bland lenovo design.

Set-up took no more than 15 minutes. Windows 7 is a vast improvement over Vista, though they may look the same on the outside. Taskbar is more functional, and this computer even comes with Windows 7 Professional, not just home premium like all other laptops around this price.

It also must be noted that quality of this computer is outstanding. The keyboard is the best I've ever used, and the red scroll cursor in the middle is a great way of navigating web pages instantly. The integrated fingerprint reader is a cinch to use, and is fun at the same time. The screen is amazing, clear and bright no complaints. My only complaint is the battery life, a relatively short 2.5 to 3 hours. However, I'm not going to complain. All the other positives of this laptop overshadow it.

The intel core i3-370m processor is snappy and quick. Web pages load fast, as do Windows Media Player, music editing programs, and Microsoft Office. The 4 GB of ram is plenty, and adds to the speed of the laptop. Also, the 320 GB hard drive is big enough, and at 7200 rpm, stores files quickly.

Hope this review helped. This model is perfect for the college-bound and the small business. I would definitely recommend buying this laptop.

Well, less than a year later and I am having issues. The hard drive started to fail, so I called Lenovo. They said the warranty had expired in August even though I bought it in December 1, 2010 and it is a one year warranty. I had to fight with them and they finally agreed that Amazon was a covered seller therefore the changed to warranty to expire on Dec 1. So, they sent me a new hard drive, but no recovery CDs. I called back and they said they should have sent them with the hd. So, they send the discs. I formatted my damaged hd and went to install the new one and realized they sent me a 5400 rpm hd and this unit comes with a 7200 rpm hd. So, I called them back and the guy argued with me that this system does not come with a 7200 rpm hd. I told him the product number right off the hd and this is a new machine and it is advertised as having a 7200 rpm. I am still sitting on the phone with the guy and he is trying to find a 7200 hd because the one that is in this machine is out of stock. So, first the machine is not very good if the hd is going in less than a year, second Lenovo screwed up three times in trying to get the problem resolved and I still don't have the right hd.

So I bought a ThinkPad because I was extremely impressed with the quality of my used ThinkCentre desktops so I figured I'd buy a new Lenovo/IBM product. The aesthetics of the older ThinkPads were getting dated a decade ago, but I do consider them iconic. I was very surprised to see pictures of the ThinkPad Edge series. A ThinkPad that was sexy? *gasp* Yeah, it looks like a cheap MacBook clone, but it's sexy for a ThinkPad (especially the red, but I couldn't justify paying an extra $300 just for the color).

The first thing I notice is the Chiclet keyboard. It looks so clean compared to the older ThinkPads. I can see that the designers were inspired by the MacBook. Beyond the aesthetic, the keyboard is a pleasure to type on. I am typing this very review on the keyboard. It feels very solid with almost no hint of cheap plastic. It even sounds like a high quality keyboard. In fact, this keyboard is better than every desktop keyboard I've typed on. Comparing the Edge's keyboard to other laptop keyboards is like writing with a nice ink rollerball pen versus a cheap ball-point pen. It is an amazing difference.

The key layout on the right-hand side is strange to me. It makes the keyboard look more centered though. I use the Home/End and PgUp/PgDn keys frequently when navigating text and I'm used to them all in a column along the right side of the keyboard. I hate the smaller arrow keys. The up/down, left/PgUp, and right/PgDn buttons combined are the size of a normal key. The PgUp/PgDn keys are also shorter in height than the arrow keys. I also don't like that the Fn key is where the Ctrl key should be. The functionality can be swapped in the BIOS, but you can't change the physical appearance of the keys. I have muscle memory of the normal position of the Ctrl key, but I have a momentary brain lapse when I look down at the keyboard for the Fn key's function.

For the mouse control there is the traditional IBM TrackPoint in the middle of the keyboard and a touchpad. I've never used a laptop with a TrackPoint before, but it was easy to get used to using it. Having both options means there are twice the mouse buttons as well. The touchpad's buttons are actually too narrow to use comfortably. The buttons are flush with the touchpad and they drop too much when pressed so it feels awkward. I also seem to hit the area on the touchpad above the buttons when I try to press the button quickly. The TrackPoint's buttons below the spacebar is much nicer since they are beveled and have a nice red accent stripe. As a bonus, there is a middle mouse button! It has bumps on it and reverse beveled from the left/right buttons. It comes in handy for me because I use the middle mouse button all the time for Firefox.

The screen is nice and bright, but I wish it wasn't glossy. I believe it can be special ordered with a matte screen, but for most off-the-shelf computers the glossy screen is standard. It has an auto-dim feature that will dim the screen based on the color of what's on the screen. For example, if you view a webpage that has mostly dark colors like black and gray then the screen will brighten and if you switch to Word to type something the screen will dim from the white. Thankfully this annoying feature can be turned off in the Intel Graphics control panel. One cool feature of the screen is that it will flip all the way back so it is parallel with the keyboard. The screen can also be opened with one hand albeit slowly (the ridge for the lid is on the right instead of center so it pushes harder on that side of the laptop when opening).

The Core i3 is a pretty good little processor. It can handle full-screen Hulu and Netflix without a hiccup unlike the Pentium Dual-Core which lags badly even on the lowest resolution Hulu video. The battery life is decent. It's nowhere near 4 hours with casual use. The best I got was 3.5 hours and that's just reading blogs and watching a few videos on YouTube using WiFi and the screen set at 50% brightness. That is still pretty impressive though as my old Compaq and Dell barely made it two hours unplugged doing the same things. The 4 GB of RAM is more than enough for most people. For comparison when I'm at work and have 4 instances of Visual Studio as well as instances of Word, Outlook, OneNote, and Firefox with eleventy billion tabs open I'm hovering around 2.5 GB RAM usage.

The computer comes with Windows 7 Pro preloaded with Office Starter. You can read about Windows 7 being amazing everywhere so I'll focus on Office Starter. This is the full version of Word and Excel 2010 with the advanced features removed. It is not a trial as there is no expiration date. It also has a right-had sidebar with a small 1.5" rotating banner ad. It is perfect because everything you do here is compatible with every other version of Office unlike MS Works. Plus there is an option to save Office Starter to a flash drive to use on a different computer. It boggles the mind how far Microsoft has come to pleasing users! Besides the Microsoft software, there isn't very much crapware on the laptop either. It just has a suite of Lenovo tools that contains an app that shows diagnostics, a password manager linked to the fingerprint scanner, a back-up disk creator, and a hardware update program. There is not much to uninstall except for the anti-virus trial. Uninstall that and install Microsoft Security Essentials instead (which is free, monitors in real-time, and it doesn't take up a lot of system resources).

This laptop exceeded my expectations so it is an excellent value. I am pleased with the quality and features it has. You can definitely feel the quality in this machine. It isn't a supercomputer, but I didn't intend to game or run any intensive programs on it as that's what I have a nice desktop for. I would definitely recommend picking this up over the other name brands just for the lack of crapware alone. It's perfect for sitting on the couch and doing some leisurely reading/video watching or catching up on some office work.

Bought his laptop in Nov 2010. Has a nice look and feel. But somehow lenovo's attempt to sexy up the thinkpad line kinda falls flat for me. From the perspective of functionality, speed, and reliability it is definitely a thinkpad. No issues there. But it lacks the solid rockhard feel that experienced thinkpad users usually look for. I could go so far as to saying that it looks kinda cheap. It is also not very slim. Has a bulky feel to it (though not heavy at all). Its best feature is the keyboard. An amalgam of the Apple chiclet style and the robust thinkpad keyboard that we all love, this is probably THE best keyboard on a laptop I have seen/used. Bottomline, if u are looking for a cheap functional laptop, this is the way to go. If u really want a thinkpad in performance and feel pay a little more and get a T-series. It will be worth it.

It took 3 generations but Asus has finally fixed all the problems and perfected their Zenbook line.

-This thing is unbelievably well constructed, everything FEELS as solid as it should given its price.

-The touchpad works great

-The keyboard is backlit and the keys even register corner presses

-The screen, besides being 1440p, is also extremely bright, which somewhat makes up for the glossy screen required by the inclusion of a touch screen

-The haswell processor has apparently increased the battery life significantly over the previous generations.

In addition to all of the above, this thing is literally the most beautiful device I have ever seen and since everything visible is covered in Gorilla Glass 3, that isn't likely to change as its unlikely that a laptop will encounter sand, which is the only common thing that will scratch GG3.

If you have the money, there are no compromises made with this laptop(except for high end gaming due to lack of discrete video card) as long as you are willing to wipe it down with the included giant lens cloth every once in a while to keep it looking pristine.

I was looking for a windows ultrabook to rival the MacBook Air and this is it.

On the positive side it is very light and thin, screen is high resolution, the keyboard is amazing, long battery life, fast processor and storage.

The only real negative is that the case is a fingerprint magnet.

I compared the asus to all leading options and found this to be the best of the lot.

I've had this laptop for over 2 years now and I love it. I use it daily and I've never had a major problem with it. My charger broke about a year ago, which was frustrating and I bought an aftermarket one from Staples. The charger has loosened my charging port, but that is the fault of the charger... not Toshiba.

The only thing I wish was different was that my key pad light up. Black keys with no backlight make for difficult typing at night.
