I've been using my ct14-a2 Vizio computer for several weeks now and have uncovered a serious flaw: the keyboard. Pressing the keys often gives you ss insteadd of s, or aa instead of a and sometimes the key simply does not do anything at all. I have contacted Vizio Support a half dozen times, but their simplistic "fixxes" do nothing(note doublee x and e) Several Online reviewers have commented on this pproblem.

Vizio has an apparent design/production problem. It is something that people such as myself, who rely on the computer for income, simply ccannot live with. I'm tryig to get resolution. I urge Vizio to come out with an update soon, PLEEZE???

Would I recommend the Vizio? No becausee of the keyboard prroblemss. And no, I did NOT manually addd the double letters the computer did it all by itself!

I really hate to write a negative revview of Vizio: I have two of theirr TV sets with no problems at all. And the ct14 computer is a work of art but, like a beautiful woman with a grating voice, it's nearly impossible to live with. Please if you must buy a Vizio ct14 wait until the second generation comes out??? You will thank me and a lot of other frustrated Vizio computer users.

I've been thinking about buying an ultrabook in order to bring it to my university in my backpack without having a heavy weight computer. Probably most people would buy one with something related with it.

After googling infos and ultrabooks benchmarks, I found a very interesting one that, it said, comparing with all ultrabook models, the only one that came closest to Macbook Air (in performance) was this one Vizio Thin + Light

I came to Amazon and ordered one. After getting my hands on it, I realized how beautiful it is, light and well designed [external beauty huh?].

Some pros:

Nice display

boots very quickly

lightweight

battery duration is average

Cons:

trackpad is a pain. When I first used it, I realized it had real problems, for example, when I have to aim correct to a link and have to move my finger slowly, the cursor simply doesn't move. The precision is very, very bad. I tried to update my trackpad driver, but it stills very bad

ssd hd is slow

sometimes I get bluescreen in my Windows when it goes to sleep or have something related with power management. Kinda weird.

keyboard keys are a bit strange and it doesn't have keys like "Page Up, Page Down, Pause/Break" and so forth

Honestly, if I could get my money back, I would do it for sure.

Conclusion: I'm disappointed with the product and I would recommend other models.

Bought this to use in bed while I'm ill main reason was light weight & solid state drive.

Pro's: light & fast & no bloatware

Cons: keyboard not lit and keys hard to see (no contrast); no Home key & awkward Delete key placement

" Needs a couple more USB ports

" Needs a port for hard-wired internet cable

" wish I'd got something with built-in DVD drive

(But I suppose it would be quite a bit heavier with this stuff on! oh well ...)

Having used this laptop for about 2 hours now, I can say I am happy with my purchase. This laptop is a great price for what you get compared to the rest of the market. However, the two things I dislike about this ultrabook is the trackpad which kind of sucks (I've done the update) and the fan at times can act up. But I love the screen resolution, design and portability.

I was looking around for laptops for school. Did the whole go to best buy, check to see what was available in my price range. But price wasn't the only obstacle I also wanted something that could run games like Diablo 3. When I talked to the best buy computer guy he was trying to sell me the 800 dollar Samsung. I told him a few times my maximum spending limit was 500 bucks, he proceeded to tell me that if I wanted to run Diablo 3 that the laptops in that price range would not support the graphics recommendations. Well I told him I needed something right away due to my school work falling behind. He recommended this particular laptop because it was an open box item and it was "cheap but fast" so I took it home and installed Diablo 3 just to see what it would do. To my amazement it installed fairly quickly and ran almost flawlessly. "Almost" is the key word every now and then it lags. But for the 400 bucks it is worth it. I didn't buy it off of Amazon but I shop for just about everything on here so I decided to write a review for those who are wondering and thinking about getting a decent laptop for a decent price. The only thing I don't like is that the laptop is brown. But I can live with it. So if your in the market for a laptop this is well worth the buy. Hope this review was helpful

Review of Samsung Series 9 NP900X1B-A01 11.6-Inch Laptop

I've had this for about 5 days now. I traded in the Series 3 11.6 (Princeton) for this one.

Build:

I can attest to the machine's toughness. While I have yet to drop it...I haven't exactly been delicate with it either. I was able to pry off the bottom to have a look inside. No problem. The screen doesn't seem to flex as others have mentioned in their review (seems pretty solid) and I do keep leaving the sliding doors to the ports open when I threw the laptop in by pack going to work (it's just a regular pack...no padded laptop pocket and I didn't have a case or anything to put the laptop into. Doors seem to be working fine (not that I enjoy testing my luck...I just keep forgetting)

Hardware:

I love the keyboard and display (especially the keyboard backlighting) Wifi seems low-end for a high-end model (same chip as in the 13.3 inch Series 9 (bcm4357). I did a skype test of the in low light...it seemed ok but not great (basically I had to be right up to the camera to be seen). Speakers are pretty good (I did prefer the Samsung Series 3 which had their speakers above the keyboard instead of underneath the unit). Speakers seem to be loud enough and stereo sound (even when placing the laptop on a chair or bed). YMMV (I"m not expecting the speakers to compete with bigger laptops or external speakers). The battery life seems to be sub-par (2 1/2 to 3 hours using continuously not even streaming video or audio and, yes, Ubuntu has power management settings which I've configured)

Popping the bottom off to look at the hardware, there is no 204 pin memory modules so it looks like replacing/upgrading the memory is difficult/impossible (I'm not brave enough to try extracting the motherboard to see if the modules are on the other side below the keyboard). I do love the fact that the SSD is PCI-E (and can be replaced..as opposed to soldered on the motherboard like macbook air.) I'm going to replace the wifi card with a Centrino 6230 (as soon as it gets here)

Software:

I reformatted to Ubuntu Natty 64 bit and loaded VMware player for Windows 7. I haven't had any issues with the touchpad. All the complaints about multi-touch gestures not working or limited seem to be a Windows only issue. Specifically two-finger scrolling and two-finger tap (for right-click) work flawlessly. Since the touchpad works on my Win7 install via vmware tools this functionality is still present when I'm in Windows. (win7 Pro 32 bit)...althugh I haven't played around very much on the Windows side since I use the Unity mode and just launch Outlook and IE mostly. The Broadcom chip seemed to work for me (I'm using it until my Centrino 6230 gets here) I'm on kernel 2.6.38.11 if that helps out anyone.

I can't give it 5 stars because of the wifi and battery. All in all, I like the laptop very much. Other than the wifi card and the battery life...this was worth the $400 over the Samsung Series 3

...while Apple offers configuration options for the Macbook Air 11 inch...the price tag is $1649 (core i7, 256 gb ssd option) + $249 or so for the applecare 2 year warranty. While I like OS X...I want to use Ubuntu as my OS (and not through vmware)

If you're a windows user and want a thin and light laptop the Series 9 is the way to go.

1/5/12 update Ok, I've had my Series 9 for 4 months now. Still love it. Since the last review I've reformatted from Ubuntu to Win7 (Ultimate 64-bit). I installed the Intel Centrino 6230 card and it works flawlessly. I ended up taking the sliding port doors off.

Hardware Under Windows 7 I Installed all hardware drivers that were available from Windows update and the rest from the Samsung support site. I do think the battery has a little better performance under win7 . I use sleep mode (left it asleep at 50% battery life all night and most of the day). When I woke it up...the battery was at 49%. I used it for a bit and put it back asleep. When I got home I got back on it. Battery life now at 31% (using it for about 1/2 hour). Compared to Ubuntu I'd say I'm eeking out an extra 1/2 hour or so on windows.

Software Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (SP1) all updates from windows installed (except the 35 language packs...don't need those). Use the drivers from Microsoft and only install the drivers you need from Samsung. Use the battery life extender (software section) from the Samsung site. And the firmware update 1.0.0.2 (firmware section) on samsung site.

In conclusion You will need to replace the wifi card (I recommend the Intel Centrino 6230). You will want to install a fresh copy of your flavor of windows (or linux) 64 bit edition and delete the existing partitions during the OS install. Under Windows 7, when you get updates just create a new restore point...you don't need a separate recovery partition. If you are going to create an image you will definately want to do this via network. If you're just worried about your data and settings...just use Windows Easy Transfer (enable and login as administrator). I've got 2 external monitors running...one is on a USB display (UGA USB video adapter) and the other is through the mini HDMI port. Run the USB video adapter on a USB hub works great.

Laptop still functioning like a pro. I would recommend using the Samsung AA-AH1NAMB/US Micro HDMI To VGA Adapter. I was using an VGA > HDMI > micro HDMI and connectivity was extremely sensitive.

Prior to this, I used Macbook Air (11 inch screen) and it was not up to challenge for the relatively simple computing tasks and it lacked so many ports. This Samsung on the other hand is very powerful, lightweight,functional with a slick design(given, not as slick as Macbook Air), I would strongly recommend anyone who is looking for a lightweight, powerful laptop.

The stats listed for this item are not false. This is one of the few 11.6 inch laptops that was manufactured with a 128 GB SSD drive, and 4GB of ram. I thought it was a typo, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was exactly as was listed.

The only disappointment, is that this came with the faulty wifi card that's usually associated with the Series 9. I purchased an Intel Centrino combination bluetooth and wifi card for this and replaced it right away. The wifi now works perfectly. I had a tricky time opening the laptop up due to some stubborn screws. Be very careful not to strip the tiny things or it may be permanently sealed forever.

I should also mention that I'm typically someone who is very bothered when electronics are made of fingerprint prone materials. A good example would be the glass on touch screen phones. Many people say that this computer is a 'fingerprint magnet', but I actually found this to be false. While you WILL have some finger printing for every day use, it's only a 'magnet' if you're doing something like eating popcorn or a cheeseburger while using it. There is a glossy plastic frame around the screen that I would deem as a 'magnet', but you shouldn't be touching the screen with your fingers anyway.

Fantastic little computer once you replace the wifi card.

I think there are some serious quality issues with this version of the Samsung device. The packaging I received seemed to already have been opened at one point, so I think my device may have already been returned once, fixed, and resold. Anyway, after one week of use the SSD drive failed and everything on it was lost. Yeah, should have been backing up everyday I guess, but I usually back up every week and the machine didn't even last that long.

My Acer Aspire 3680 has no sound. I looked on the Internet to see if someone knew the solution. It seems everyone who ownes one of these has problems with the sound and no one knows how to fix it for sure. Some have had success by replacing the sound card (expensive). I'm not going to waste any more money on mine.

I brought this Acer because a car accident put me in bed after a while. Previously I always enjoyed how you got more bang for your buck with a desktop. Anyway, since I wasn't planning for the purchase, I initially was looking for machines under $1000. But then I saw the Acer for about 1/2 that price. I was stuck on it because unlike many other machines in it's price range, it had 1GB of RAM installed; which I heard was a must for MS Vista. So I took the plunge.

Right away, I was impressed with the sleek look of this laptop. When closed, it is metallic silver with "Acer" placed demurely on the upper corner of the lid. Opening it up reveals a black keyboard placed close to the screen to afford enough room to rest your wrists. The display is gorgeous...clear and crisp. You have the standard laptop goodies...like a DVD burner, a multi-card reader, Ethernet port, USB ports. The only thing lacking was the Firewire port.

Acer's pre-installed software (Acer Arcade and the "Empowering Technology" app) are pretty handy. There is not as much "bloatware" as other machines have.

My main complaints with the machine are that the speakers are not good at all (listening through my iPod's headphones were a great improvement...so consider that!). Also, it has an odd "scroll square" thing between the touchpad buttons...I can't seem to get used to it. The 80GB hard drive is not the largest, but also Acer partitioned it into two (which seems odd...and prompts me to check my disk space, and I just got the machine!) And finally for volume control...you have to use the "Fn" key with some keyboard keys which can be tough in dim lighting where you can't read the blue decals on black so well.

Other than that, I am really pleased with this laptop. For under $500, you really can't do to much better. And most people would never know it cost that much by looking at it and seeing it's capabilities first hand.

I have had my Acer since 2008. It was given to me used from my sister. I use it a lot for video and sound recording. Other than replacing the small hard drive with a larger one and upgrading the memory, I have not had a bit of trouble with it. Bought a spare battery for it 2 years ago. Tough laptop as it has fell off the seat in the van many times when some NUT would pull out in front of me. Still workks GREAT!!!!

This is an excellent computer. I never booted Windows Vista, instead, the first thing I did was throw in the Ubuntu Linux disk, so I have no idea what kind of bloatware was originally on the computer. Everything worked out of the box with Linux, except for the Fn key, which I never use. There is a fix for it that I will try out, just in case.

Yes, it is expandable to 4GB of RAM. The display is beautiful. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on. It is blazing fast. Ripping CDs takes no time whatsoever. For a laptop, the sound is very good. I get great wireless signal strength.

I was at first regretting not purchasing the wenge brown computer, but at the time the silver one with the same specs was much cheaper. For the money I saved, the color is perfect.

For the typical web surfing, light photo editing, and music listening that I do, I do not need anymore computer than this. I have no complaints.

I bought this laptop on Black Friday at Best Buy and only paid $399...for four hundred dollars you absolutely cannot beat it. The computer is very nice to look at, the screen is beautiful, the keys are comfortable, and the sound is great. The only problem I have with the computer has nothing to do with the actual computer at all I hate Windows Vista. Since I bought the computer I have been spending all my free time trying to downgrade from Windows Vista to Windows XP with no avail. Sony won't open up this model for a downgrade until at least the first quarter of 2008 and even then you will have to pay for this to be done. Vista isn't compatible with all routers, so since my roommate already had an Airport Extreme router (and isn't open to switching to a new router), I have no internet access. If you are buying this computer make sure you check the compatibility with your router first or be prepared to buy a new one along with the computer as it is a huge hassle to try to make them compatible. This is not the fault of the computer though, just a general warning to anyone buying a new Windows operating computer (all new PCs come with Vista).

Other things:

-The computer is a little heavier than I would have liked, but that's honestly not that big of a problem (haven't weighed it but I'd say in the range of 6-8 lbs).

-It is clear that this isn't the best Vaio that money can buy. Sometimes the responses are a little slow, and when I was transfering music from my old computer to this one on CDs the CD driver was humming a little louder than I would have liked. Generally it is quite quiet though.

-It comes with a bunch of programs that I immediately removed because they aren't necessary and just take up space. (ex. Napster)

Besides Vista being a pain though, these aren't huge issues and for the price you absolutely cannot beat it. If you are looking for a computer to do general computing (AIM, Internet, listen to music, store photos, etc) then this is the computer for you. Remember though, check the compatibility with your router!

No webcam which isn't a huge deal, the 1gb of memory can be upgraded, but what the hell is Sony think they are doing spamming Vaio users with Vista bloatware. This notebook lags so badly, and by no fault of it's own it's just all the bloatware that Sony loads on these computers to annoy and slap users who paid their hard earned money for a good notebook. To save everyone time go to yahoo or any search engine and type in "remove crap ware tool" and download it. Rather then spend hours removing all the needless nonsence that is bloatware off this notbook, this program will scan your computer and bring up an amazing list that you can select what programs you want removed, saves time, lots of time considering how much spam is on this machine.

The biggest problem is that it comes with Vista and hundreths of preinstalled software that turn the machine slow. The Recovery CDs are not included, you got to make them from the OS. After you create then, and reinstall partioning the Hard Disk, uninstall all the preinstalled software and tune up Windows Vista for performance (i mean, no AERO Themes), the machine works great and fast (even with Vista).

I strongly recommend this machine, but only if you would do the "hard work" described.

Glenn Skow's post is correct. This problems goes a looong way back and they haven't(refuse to) corrected it yet. This problem exist with Vaio P4 or other models of VAIO.

Yeah, it's the soldering problem with the SODIMM memory banks which gets broken w/ mobo over time. When that happens, you won't be able to use the laptop. Sony continues to ignore the problems and pass it on to your pocketbook.

This is my second Lenovo that I've owned and my 4th counting work laptops. I've used just about every brand of laptop, and I keep coming back to Lenovo, Toshiba, and Compaq (the compaq branded hps). I've had good luck with all of them. The rest I pass on. I use Linux and FreeBSD mostly. Not much of a Windows user here. I'm also a kvm user. The W530 is a good machine. The only issues I have are the keyboard isn't quite as good as the T61p's nor is the touch pad. My hands have a tendency to brush the touch pad while typing.

If you're looking for a solid machine, the W530 will serve well. It needs only a memory upgrade from the standard 4GB. With 4 memory slots, (2 under keyboard and 2 under bottom cover), it has the space for considerable memory upgrades. I installed 2 8GB sticks bringing the machine to 20GB which fit nicely under the very easy to remove keyboard. As you might have guessed, I run Linux on this beast.

For Linux fans, I run CentOS 6.4 64bit. It installs easily and smoothly. Wifi works, camera works, sound is smooth. All the systems I've tested work as expected. About the only thing I haven't tested is bluetooth and external video. The quadro K2000M video card works well on the open source driver for nvidia.

For FreeBSD fans, yes I have booted the machine on FreeBSD 9.1 64bit. It installs easily as well and runs smoothly too. I didn't test it quite as much. Geom disk encryption did use the onboard TPM module reporting hardware encryption enabled and ZFS was quite happy.

This machine is a solid performer under Linux and should be equally so under FreeBSD. A note of caution: Lenovo's tools are Windows based and many retailers won't deal with laptop issues if the hdd doesn't have Windows on it. I highly recommend either storing the Windows partitions somewhere easily restored to the hdd or install a different hdd and put the Windows one in an antistatic bag. It's a rather curious thing consider Lenovo does state they support Linux on their laptops.

I am a super user when it comes to computers and laptops. I have APPLE (MacBook Air) DELL, and legacy IBM thinkpads (including the W700DS). This computer is really a nice blend of size and power. It lets me do all the hard core stuff I need to do while coming in an nice form factor. I feel like it is the perfect blend between a macbook air and W700DS.

As the owner of a w500 previously, jumping up 4 years later, these W530's are as solid as it's predecessor. Solid performance in all aspects. i7 chip and the option of adding the cache gives you the best performance without having to go to a solid state drive. Although moving to a solid state SATA III makes it simply amazing with a 7.0 performance index, with no exaggeration. Make sure you buy a seat belt to go with the drive upgrade. Having used ThinkPad (mostly T series and some X series) for more than a decade, I was a little disappointed with my last Thinkpad T500, which was my first one after Lenovo took over. It recently develop overheating problem and I couldn't solve it other than having a fan pointing at it. I know it's time to upgrade to a new laptop, but in the past, I've never upgraded a ThinkPad because it broke; I upgraded because they became outdated for running new software.

So, this time, the first things I looked for was from other brands than Lenovo, but I still ended up with ThinkPad after reading extensive reviews and trying out other brands. Since I am a power user, I decided to pick a W series this time, and I chose it also because the W series is now only the size and weight of previous T series.

So far it's functioning like a workhorse. Quiet and handing multitasking and video editing without problem. I was shopping for less than full HD because full HD makes the fonts too small to read on a 15.6" screen. Considering the price and value, I ended up with a full HD, which should not be something to complain about. If you are young and have good eyes, I would recommend it. As for me, I have to put on my reading glasses.

So, this W530 is everything a workstation notebook is supposed to be, except two things to complain about. The first complaint is about the accessory keys being moved around to strange places. (The main keys, however, continue the ThinkPad's high reputation; very comfortable to type.) The delete key is too far away now. I don't know why with every model, ThinkPad would move these important utility keys around. The Print Screen keys is now in between the left and right arrow keys. I don't know why they put it in such a convenient place; do people use Print Screen all the time? The screen brightness adjustment keys are in a place where you cannot easily get used to. A 15.6" inch laptop has a lot of real state for keys. Asus' 15.6" laptop even has a full numeric keypad on it. Just can't understand why ThinkPad would skimp on keys.

My major complain is the huge charger brick. The size and weight of it is not I expected in today's technology. Looking at the brick, I feel I am brought back ten years. Maybe it's necessary to power a "workstation." I am traveling next week (from Coast to Coast), and I am looking forward to take my new W530 with me, but I am not looking forward to carry the power brick. Yap, I deducted one star mainly for the power brick, and partly for the arrangement of the accessory keys.

I hope this system will last until it become outdated, and not die on me. So far it's running fast and very quietly!

This is a nice unit. Unfortunately, HP computers consistently come with loads of bloatware, and Windows 8 is terrible. Uninstalling bloatware is easy, though, and most of Win8's flaws have neat work-arounds. In any case, the computer itself is as new as it gets; manufacturer refurbishing doesn't frequently go wrong. The item was shipped promptly and safely, priced fairly, and described accurately.

I had been looking for some time for a good deal on a below $450 laptop running Windows 7 (not because I like running Windows, it is just outside my budget to purchase a Linux machine also). I always prefer Dell because of the quality and the excellent technical support (just try to get an HP computer repaired under warranty) but was having trouble breaking that $400 line. When I saw this M501R laptop offered for $369, I ordered it very quickly, just doing a quick scan of its capabilities and reputation on the net. 4 GB RAM, dual core processor (don't mind this moderately powerful AMD chip since I am not doing video processing or the like on this machine), 500 GB HD (5400 RPM is slow, but for Internet and document, photo processing it is fine), CD/DVD read and write (don't usually see this included on a below $400 machine), big (15.6 inch) screen with fairly nice resolution (hey, what do you want for this price)---not quite as precise display as the higher priced dispalys but my wife likes it fine for TV and movies anyway, Windows 7 Home Supreme (whatever---no one sells lower than "Supreme") keeps you in the MS monopoly plot for now, though I do recommend using OfficeLibre (used to be Open Office---free superior equivalent to Microsoft Office handles all document processing needs and is compatible with MS) as I did to avoid purchasing overprices MS stuff, and GIMP if you are an Adobe Photoshop user but don't have a spare grand lying around. Good audio---run the output into a laptop stereo stand. Windows Live Movie Maker is a plus with Windows 7, giving you pretty nice YouTube video production capability. Don't need an email application since GMAIL and HOTMAIL have great web interfaces. Jump on this!

I thougt the low price and the fact that it had Windows 7 made it worth the risk of buying. Never again. With this computer, I have to be very careful when typing a message, even as I'm doing now, because the cursor jumps around to another spot in the message. And frequently, I mean very frequently, I had to troubleshoot to get it to connect to the internet when other wifi devices in the house worked just fine. Annoying. Also no number keys pad, but I could have lived with that. I rarely write negative reviews, but this was a very poor choice on my part. I'm going to save up and get a good one next time.

Update: The company has been very prompt in responding, and has said they would accept a return with a restocking fee (which is perfectly understandable since I'm sure they have to go into the computer to make sure you have deleted all your personal stuff, etc.). So the company seems wonderful, but not this particular laptop.

My 94 year old mother needed a new computer! Her ten plus year old XP desktop gave up the ghost and she thought a laptop would be a good idea!

I shopped around for a Windows 7 OS because I wasn't sure how she would handle the look and feel of Windows 8. She now has her email, solitaire and internet back, and is quite happy with the laptop.

Computer arrived on time. It was so easy to make it work. I was able to easily download the security program that I wanted, and my husband is using the computer with no trouble at all.

I only need to change the font inside the computer and I have not been able to figure that out. Other than that we are happy with the computer and finding the computer online thru amazon was very easy and convenient.

I got this laptop and I am happy to report...I am extremely satisfied. It is sleek, fast, durable and long battery time...delivers as promised. I am an old custom tower PC and mainframe guy. I am so used to blazing speeds and this laptop delivers as a consistent work horse. I am pleased with the back lights too...helps to view the keyboard in dark lighting conditions. I am adding more memory and from a guy who actually had a water cooled custom PC tower and to have used some crazy fast mainframe systems...and seen some crazy stuff over the years...this laptop impressed me and that is not easy to do. So far...not one single problem and I have not even seriously optimized it yet. DVD drive ran well in making DVD copies...but the drive is near the electrical adapter...can annoy some people, but I am fine with that. Comes with lots of Toshiba software.

Internet comes up before you log in and stays up and on either system Internet Explorer or Google Chrome...runs nice and quick. Very few bumps in the road so far. This laptop for 2 months straight...even when pushed with several applications running. It never froze up once...so far anyway.

Windows 7 runs consistently well...but updates seem to be eating up too much space and that is a serious concern to me. I have used up 39 Gigs of space out of what is available...449 Gigs...and seriously I will get to the bottom of it, but...I think I have to turn off some type of logging programs, but updates seem to be hammering me the most and I am working on it.

The video cards respond very well to HD video and all videos play smoothly and all programs pop up without much lag time. For someone like me...who needs the speed and power and space and is a pretty advanced user...I am pleased with Windows 7 too on this system. I am someone who HAS TO run multiple programs and push it...and I love this laptop...making a mainframe and server tower type go GO MOBILE and have the same power on the run. LOVE IT>

This is my second Toshiba Satellite in 3 years. I wanted the Harmon Kardon speakers like my first satellite and these are the same great Harmon speakers. I like the keyboard but wish it had a small mark on the keys to tell when I am on the right key. Wanted the lighted keyboard but cannot get it with the Harmon Kardon speakers. There is a small button above the touchpad to turn it on and off, very convenient as I always use an externa mouse. I may upgrade the memory but so far it is working well for my excel spreadsheets and net surfing. Shipping was superb and got it earlier than promised.

I have had this computer for just over 1 year. I am graduate student and needed a computer that was fast, durable, and could handle multitasking. I knew I would be using this laptop for possibly long stretches of time daily and I needed a laptop that would hold up. It did all of that for the entire first year.... unfortunately 1 year and 1 day following my purchase (right after my 1 year warranty expired) the keys on the mouse pad broke. I have had a couple keys popping off, as well. The mouse and keyboard are pretty important in a laptop! For that reason alone I am really dissatisfied and am looking to purchase a new laptop. When I bought this computer I was hoping it would at least make it through my graduate program. I am out of luck and will be out of a chunk of change!

Perhaps if you are not using the laptop as often as I am then it will hold up better, but after spending a good amount of money on a computer I expect it to last more than 365 days.

I was able to pick this laptop up at a local Fry's here in the Bay Area for $550 which I think is about the right price point. I bought my wife a Core i5 Vaio at the same time (and about the same price point) and I have to admit there is a significant build quality difference. It's funny back in "the day" when Vaio was the top of the heap it used to come with an endless array of useless-ware, now Toshiba has taken the crown. Perhaps for an entry level user all the extra stuff is great (and most of it was required pre-Windows 7) but that is not the case these days. I suppose that is the only real drawback to the machine and if that is all I can find to gripe about that is pretty small.

The good: In my price range (again ~$550 locally) it's a Core i7-2670QM, so you get the benefit of 4 cores (or what looks like 8 processors in taskmgr for the home user). Full size keyboard including a number pad, seems very reliable runs Ubuntu very well, big drive, nice crisp screen, and very good audio.. The keyboard is either a good or a bad, I am undecided I think I like the feel, I do Unix work in my real life so I am forever hitting the keyboard for terminal sessions.

Plenty of USB ports, button to disable the trackpad (sometimes a button with an indicator is the cats meow), wireless works fine (with Ubuntu I had major issues with my desktop-distro of choice Fedora 16, but I may try again). USB 3.0; HDMI out, integrated camera works fine, (though not as good as i5 Vaio at the same price point), 4GB RAM is fine for the home user.

The bad: My biggest gripe is that I continuously hit the trackpad with my left palm while using my right hand to reposition the mouse resulting in a ZOOM effect in 7. I use an external mouse usually and the button to disable the mousepad is great. Build quality is definitely lacking but I look at it this way, after having a stream of Apple MacBooks, iBooks, iMacs, MacBook Pro's this may feel somewhat flimsy but it is drop proof. I don't feel like it's going to break if I drop it (which has happened already). BUT; the quality is not going to blow you away, the hinge already had a crack when I pulled it out of the box but it's pretty minor, for 500 bucks not worth my drive back across the bay bridge since this thing is for in the house use only.

No bluetooth; sure I picked this thing up for 550 bucks, but still bluetooth is in the cheapest of phones these days it wouldn't have killed Toshiba to source a board with bluetooth. Battery life seems marginal for me but I'm mostly plugged in, and it's okay but nothing to write home about. Weird wireless issues with Fedora 16; weird display issues with OpenIndiana/Solaris 11, I realize most people won't use these but putting them here just in case a spider picks this up and someone searches for it.

Overall: For a few bucks (I got them here on Amazon) you can add 8GB RAM, and this thing runs like a champ. If you need to use *nix, VirtualBoxes, do some photo editing, or movie management for web uploading/sharing and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for an i7 look for this machine, like I said a weekend at Fry's it was going for 550, unbeatable at that price point, no complaints. For the home "PC" it replaces a circa 2006(?) Dell Core2 Vostro, so my bar was pretty high, that laptop was bullet proof and lasted for a very long time.(Reads not the 24" Intel iMac that had a drive die on it, nor the MacBook that had a motherboard go bad, nor the MacBook Pro that fell and had an LCD crack those were replaced by Sony's.)

But in all honestly if I had paid $700 I would probably have returned this box for another Sony VPCEG34FX Sony VAIO VPCEG34FX/B 14-Inch Laptop (Black), that is the other laptop I bought on the same day for about $530 locally. Even with the Core i7 for what I am doing there is little difference, and I think Netflix looks better on the Sony screen which is a bit higher dollar. I kept the Toshiba because, again for under 600 it's a great value, but if you are looking for a replacement laptop for yourself and you plan to travel with it and work on it daily then you may hold off until the price drops on this one.

As I would say when I lived back in Boston all of that and a buck twenty five will get you a ride on the T.

I was rather surprised this laptop was dark brown. The picture made it appear gray. I'm not fond of the keyboard's feel...large square keys but you get used to it. A good display. The mouse is just a flat panel that sits flush with the keyboard bezel and hard to locate by touch. Also, it has a tendency to ignore me on occasion even though I adjusted it's settings (no sweet spot found). I would have also liked this box to have a phone modem for FAX. It is thin and light weight and should travel well. Its fast, has stable operation, and not loaded down with a lot of junk software. Battery life is reasonable with the "energy star" rating and really does not waste energy with excessive heat. This computer was designed for business use and it fits the description. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and recommend this laptop.

This is a very well built laptop. I was very impressed with how solid it is. Given its price, I was expecting much worse. You can hold it from one corner and there is no creaking or such. DVD drive is aligned with the back edge so it is solid in front where one tends to grab it.

Some people don't like its keyboard, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

The thing that I am unable to get used to is the fact that buttons of track pad also touch sensitive. So, my left hand is on the button (ready to click) and I am trying to move the cursor with right hand index finger. This confuses the track pad obviously, because there are two points of contact. This has made the use of this laptop very difficult.

Track pad is not centered on the whole keyboard.

Battery life is much less than claimed. I don't play any videos.

I've owned my Probook for somewhere in the vicinity of 9 months or so and other than a few minor quirks have been very pleased with this laptop. My model has the Core i5 processor and 4 gigs of ram and is zippier than any laptop I've owned. I run this thing constantly and have never had any issue with overheating or noise. The Probook looks beautiful, I absolutely love it's brushed bronze finish and chiclet keyboard, but my one issue lies with the touchpad, much like other reviewers. I've mostly mastered this problem, but my husband and brother in law both can't use the thing without shrinking the screen. Overall, aside from that one little thing (if it bothers you so much, get a wireless mouse I personally love them) this is a great computer. Oh, and it's a little on the heavy side, but I use mine like a desktop so it's also a non-issue for me. I'd highly recommend it if you can find one for a good price.

Lap top was fine at first but then problems with connecting wireless internet, 2hours on the phone to India, without a satisfactory result, they promised to send out discs to re install hard drive, unfortunately I was travelling overseas so had to purchase a new laptop as the discs did not arrive in time, one positive outcome was that Amazon did not argue just told me to send it back and they would refund the money.

I would buy again from Amazon.com but maybe not HP.

I got my Lenovo U410 2 days ago, first impression:

PROS: Very good Laptop in term of speed and battery life. Great price (I got it for 729$) for its specs. Great finishing and looks very fancy. Light and low noise.

CONS: Very Disappointed with this Lenovo U410 since it is impossible to use the wi-fi connection. The internet connection is very slow and it disconnect very often. In my opinion the wireless antenna is not well designed and not well integrated in the system. Probably some interference with the aluminum chassis. I would point out that when the wireless connection goes down there are interference and bad connection also on surrounding devices. My second laptop and ipod lose the connection with the router too. So the interference hypothesis is consistent.

Updating the driver or do whatever is written online on the forums doesn't help at all.

I solved this problem turning off the laptop wireless device and buying and USB Wi-Fi Adapter (unfortunately 60$ out of my pocket). Now I can connect to internet without problem.
