The laptop is pretty decent. Backlit keyboard is cool but feels a little delicate..not a big deal though. Had issues with the wifi connection dropping randomly but uninstalled the driver and installed newer driver from Acer's website (Please see that if you check the driver already installed it says the driver is up to date. But there is another latest driver on Acer website. So you will need to manually uninstall the current driver and install the newer driver). No more issues with the wifi dropping so far. Got a nice deal from Amazon. The speakers are great. Need to get used to Windows 8. Touchscreen is nice. The battery lasts about 4-4.5 hrs. Laptop is sleek and looks fancy. Touchpad is not upto the mark, but again that's not a deal breaker. Some people complained of fan noise on similar model series, but it was minimal and unnoticeable. Will definitely recommend this laptop.

I purchased this computer mostly for wifi use and traveling. When I first tried it slow would have been to kind of a word. Windows 8 was another issue but that is training more that a problem. I brought up the task manager, ctrl, alt, del and watched the resource meter. Symantec was eating more than 50% of the resources and even more during an update. I removed Symantec and installed Kaspersky instead and it made a huge difference. I installed Classic Start 8, which s free and the computer now works as I hoped it would. Hope this helps

I bought the machine after extensive research and did so even with some reviewers mentioning the wifi issues. I got my moneys worth. After the upgrade from Acers website, I have had no problems with the wifi connection.

Let me start with the Cons, because there are so few:

1. The graphics display is not exceptional. But good for most uses.

2. All the USB ports are on the left side. It would've been nice if they put one on the right side.

3. The LAN connection requires a provided adapter. It might be a hassle carrying it around.

That is all I have for the issues.

Pros:

1. Fast for normal use. i5 is sufficient for most everyday purposes.

2. keyboard is nice and the backlight is good.

3. Touchscreen works well. I have had no problems with it so far and windows 8, though with its own problems, is not as bad as a lot of the reviews say.

4. comes with 4GB ram in 1 of 4 slots. I am going to purchase another 4 GB to make sure I don't get slowed down with the number of applications I have running.

5. Quite light. The battery is tiny.

There may be more things I like about this machine the best thing is the price around $550.

For that price, this machine is a steal. I have a few other Acer machines, and they are all working fine. Good job on this one Acer!!

Everything is great with Acer except with Wi-Fi it continues to lose contact and I have no problem with any other device I have (iPod touch roku and kindle fire) Those that complain about windows 8 I can't understand it gives a great touch experience I will call Acer about Wi-Fi and hope they can correct this then I would give another star maybe two.

Went to Acer website and downloaded driver update. No problems at all and have been on Internet for hours. With that solved I can honestly say this is better than my Asus all in one with Windows 7.

I saw all the other reviews and recommendations for reloading the wifi driver and accomplished that no problem and have had no problem with connectivity with my router. On the other hand, the touch pad is WAY TOO TOUCHY! and is large enough to be around my hands no matter what I'm doing on the PC typing. For example, while I've been typing this response, the screen has been jumping all over the place and jumped to the START screen before I could push the ESC key.

I placed two calling cards on either end of the pad, but that has only been partially successful in keeping the touch pad deadened to my touch.

I really like the computer, but will find a way to deaden the touch pad more to keep it.

My Acer Aspire 3680 has no sound. I looked on the Internet to see if someone knew the solution. It seems everyone who ownes one of these has problems with the sound and no one knows how to fix it for sure. Some have had success by replacing the sound card (expensive). I'm not going to waste any more money on mine.

I brought this Acer because a car accident put me in bed after a while. Previously I always enjoyed how you got more bang for your buck with a desktop. Anyway, since I wasn't planning for the purchase, I initially was looking for machines under $1000. But then I saw the Acer for about 1/2 that price. I was stuck on it because unlike many other machines in it's price range, it had 1GB of RAM installed; which I heard was a must for MS Vista. So I took the plunge.

Right away, I was impressed with the sleek look of this laptop. When closed, it is metallic silver with "Acer" placed demurely on the upper corner of the lid. Opening it up reveals a black keyboard placed close to the screen to afford enough room to rest your wrists. The display is gorgeous...clear and crisp. You have the standard laptop goodies...like a DVD burner, a multi-card reader, Ethernet port, USB ports. The only thing lacking was the Firewire port.

Acer's pre-installed software (Acer Arcade and the "Empowering Technology" app) are pretty handy. There is not as much "bloatware" as other machines have.

My main complaints with the machine are that the speakers are not good at all (listening through my iPod's headphones were a great improvement...so consider that!). Also, it has an odd "scroll square" thing between the touchpad buttons...I can't seem to get used to it. The 80GB hard drive is not the largest, but also Acer partitioned it into two (which seems odd...and prompts me to check my disk space, and I just got the machine!) And finally for volume control...you have to use the "Fn" key with some keyboard keys which can be tough in dim lighting where you can't read the blue decals on black so well.

Other than that, I am really pleased with this laptop. For under $500, you really can't do to much better. And most people would never know it cost that much by looking at it and seeing it's capabilities first hand.

I have had my Acer since 2008. It was given to me used from my sister. I use it a lot for video and sound recording. Other than replacing the small hard drive with a larger one and upgrading the memory, I have not had a bit of trouble with it. Bought a spare battery for it 2 years ago. Tough laptop as it has fell off the seat in the van many times when some NUT would pull out in front of me. Still workks GREAT!!!!

I have been waiting for the i7 core laptops to release and here it is. I originally had a dell XPS 16 on order forever and a day (32 days to be exact) and they delayed it AGAIN, so I looked elsewhere. Amazon had this one in stock and got it for next day shipping for $40! And saved a ton off the dell version.

As for the laptop itself, it is a great machine. It boots very fast, does not run hot (considering equipment). The screen is beautiful and the keyboard has a nice feel to it. What it used to take my Core 2 Duo desktop 12 hours to do, this does in 4 (compressing and archiving over 100gb of photos in a .rar)! I have tried to tax the crap out of it and can never get the processors to 100%. Gaming will fix that.

I am not a huge gamer, but wanted a powerful machine for a lot of photo \ movie stuff and also play the occasional game (COD MW2). Also, as a graduate student, I often hook up external monitors and use Dragon NS 10.1 and it has absolutely no issues with it. This is way overkill, but a sweet machine nonetheless.

Prosbuilt in Blue-tooth, sweet wireless card, cooling seem adequate. Core i7!

Some minor annoyancesLights on external lid can not be shut off.

One more noteAmazon's write up states only 4gb, but it can actually go to 8gb according to ASUS and a lot of 'boutique' sites.

A very excellent gaming laptop for the money. Sure, it's not as fast as a dedicated desktop gaming rig, but for a portable one it's hard to beat. My only complaint would be the LCD is somewhat washed out which appears to be from the LED's in the top of the lid. Notice when the rig is asleep and the screen raised, one can see bleedthrough from the blinking LED in logo. Not a big deal, but if I had one complaint, that would be it. Also, much to my surprise this thing stays pretty cool to the touch. I expected it to get extremely hot, but it doesn't. The air coming out of the left side is very hot, but to touch the laptop remains cool. You can actually play games on this for hours without baking your hands and face off.

Pros:

* Great performance for the price

* ASUS provides an awesome warranty and accidental protection for this, so you can take it to a lan-party and not worry

* Plays Dragon Age, Torchlight, Empire Total War, LFD1, Warhammer: DOW2, OFP2: Dragon Rising, MSFlight X, Demigod, all extremely well at native res

I was in the market for a new laptop that I could take with me to and from work. This was the only machine I could find that had the spec set I was looking for.

I don't do much gaming on my PC. I mostly use it for work: multimedia editing/production. In the short time that I've had this machine it has blown me away with its performance. Video previews render out very quickly for a laptop. Captures also perform admirably. Disk burning and ripping is fast and flawless.

I would recommend this machine very highly to anyone looking for a portable multimedia editing station.

There is a lot to like with this laptop. Including: great performance, good price, beautiful screen, sturdy feel, good standard warranty and the two hard drives. I have very quickly become a fan of ASUS, it seems you get a lot for your money and the company is really trying to build a quality differentiated product. The added mouse and backpack are a nice touch and are very reasonable quality.

The screen and size of the laptop feel a lot bigger than the 15.6". I think it is the illusion created by the HD 16-9 format screen and the high native resolution 1920x1080. Win 7 seems to run very quickly on the machine and it frankly is a huge upgrade of Vista/XP.

So what kept my rating from 5 stars is a couple of quirks that could be a deal killer for some people. Number one is the often mentioned battery life, if you are going to be using this on battery, expect about an hour give or take depending how you use it. I like full screen brightness and power and at those settings about an hour is all I get. I know, it is a gaming PC, but still an hour seems a bit short. I just purchased a bigger 9 cell battery and we will see how that does. The 9-volt battery should be standard or at least an option. Nonetheless, the battery life is the main reason why I gave the machine four stars and not five.

While, I love the dual drives, not sure why they partitioned the drives into 4 separate partitions, it doesn't take much to undo the default set up but was a minor hassle. Also, they should give you the option of having the drives in a RAID configuration, which as far as I know is not possible. So while I like the dual drives it could have been implemented better.

Also, the 120W ASUS power brick is exactly that a brick. I know it is giving off a lot of power, but the thing is a boat anchor. It feels like a couple of pounds which takes the total package weight up. I ended up buying a second power adapter, for work so I don't have to carry it back and forth from home to work along with the laptop.

I like the keyboard now, but it did take some getting used to. The keys are similar to a Mac keyboard and they squished a full keyboard with num keypad. At first, I really did not like it as it was causing a lot of typing errors, and some of the keys are in slightly different spots. After a week or so I am used to it and now really like it. I like having the full keypad/numpad and I am used to the size and the keys. Some people may find the keyboard a deal killer as well, but like I said I didn't like it at first, but it only took about a week to get used to it. Now I really like it.

My other complaints are that the manual was very skinny and the web presence for ASUS is lacking so not much info there. I suspect as ASUS gets bigger in the states that will improve. Also, I could not find a travel adapter for the machine that works on airplanes and ASUS does not make one. I guess the downside of a lesser known brand is the fewer peripheral choices.

Overall, the quirks were not deal killers for me and after investigating numerous gaming/multimedia laptops this was far and away the best choice in my view.

I really loved this computer, i say loved because i just didnt think it was necessary for me, since i already have a PS3, 360, and a gaming Desktop, so yes it was a bit overkill. But i'm glad i tried it out just the same. I got this laptop right after the release of the windows 7 models, also i had a friend who had the old Asus G51 i believe, with the Nvidia 9800GTM, with 512mb of memory. This one comes with the Nvidia Geforce 260M, which isnt quite as powerful as the desktop models, but holds its own for a laptop. I actually have an ATI 4850 1mb that beats this card quite a bit, and can play pretty much anything at 1920 x 1080, but thats neither here nor there. Being able to play pretty much any game thats on Xbox on this laptop is a very cool way to do things, especially if you travel and want to whip out, Call of Duty MW 1 or 2, Dead Space, Devil May Cry 4, Borderlands, or even something old like Doom 3 or SIMs 2, whatever your pleasure. So bascially yes this is a portable Xbox 360, and plays much the same, resolution wise, etc. The speakers leave something to be desired, but if you go down to your icons next to the clock you'll see the real tek red speaker. Click on it, go to the menu underneath where it says sound effects, you'll get many options like Club, Rock, Classic, etc. Choose live, and the volume will shoot up drastically, the only time you should uncheck it, is when watching a movie, not sure why this is, but it works. The native resolution is low, but even the G72 is still only 1600 x 900, and not full 1080p, but most laptops aren't considering the punishment the smaller screens will take with this high resolution. You really shouldnt start getting into the 1080p area until about 24inches or so. Besides if you look on Xbox live and see the demos, it tells you exactly which games have what resolution. Well sadly, very very very few have it, and most are 720, or 1080i. The only draw back i've seen or heard are two things, what i've heard is the wireless drops quite frequently and even on all the Asus models it may do the same. Thats the biggest issue i've heard about ASUS in general. While i didnt have a problem in this area, what i did notice is when copying movies, the max speed you can get with the software your given is 4x, this i thought is totally unacceptable. Next to my girlfriends cheap Toshiba(which i gave her) it was really really slow at burning. Converting is fast and a breeze, and why the drive slows when copying or burning, i have no idea. Thats why i decided to move up to the G72 which was a beast in itself, but just to much money for me to blow. After using it for a few days i decided i didnt need it, but compared to its little brother, the burning was fine, speakers where much better, the resolution was well, about the same, but had 6 gigs of RAM to make up for the slower 5400rpm hard drive. So all in all they are about on the same level, and if you check with this model the calculations per second and the Pentium Core 2 Duo of 2.13ghz actually gets 5 stars, as compared to the G72 getting 4 on the intel sticker. Best buy now has this model(not the I7 which i imagine is sweet) for 899, i would definitely get one while they last. So if you want a great computer for all around, and its not to big, get this lil bad boy, or just up and get the big brother, they are really about the same.

Also something else to note is i really liked the rubbery texture to rest your hand on as opposed to the high glossy blue that comes on the G72. This one shows prints much less and can easily be removed. Another thing is don't always rely on the Windows Rating Index, this computer shows the same as the G72 pretty much in every area, which i don't see how its possible considering the bigger model has a 2.53ghz duo core processor. Strange. And least but not least, do not i repeat do not but your PC games anymore at Gamestop(which is stopping anyways) or Best Buy. Go and download them from either GamersGate or Direct to Drive dr2d(my personal fav) and you'll find anything you want DRM free. No kidding, the DRM is removed and there are no discs and you can re-download anytime you like. Also i've heard went Infinity Ward gets up off its rear and finally fixes all the flaws with the pc version of COD MW2 they are aiming for these sites to be the first with the fixed versions. So definitely take the warning, stay away from discs, download digital. :)

I've had good experiences with you in the past, but this Acer laptop I bought from your site for $553.20 (order #002-2809933-d1921830) has been nothing but an ordeal!!!! The sound didn't function (I could barely hear it, even though all levels were at maximum)...I paid $80 for a computer tech, who couldn't fix it, so I had to ship it to Acer for repair (box COST ME $10). I probably could have sent it back to you, but sent it to Acer, who said they'd try and fix it. I won't buy another big ticket item from you, I can assure you (if I buy anything at all in the future!)

I have not purchased this particular model, but the last line indicates that the reviewer will never buy another Acer...or purchase a computer from Amazon. The experience of the previous reviewer is unfortunate, but has not been my experience at all.

To you suppose that maybe you just got a bad one? Amazon would have helped you work through this.

Audio is obviously "bad' , both via the built in loudspeakers, and with 3rd party loudspeakers ( external) which work brilliantly on my MacBook. Voice sounds like the person speaking is on helium, and music is just plain pathetic. Customer Support tried to help but were unable to come up with any worthwhile suggestions other than "I would suggest that you to perform a system recovery from the hard drive partition to resolve the issue. If the issue related to software, it will be resolved by performing a recovery.

Please note that all your personal data files and applications will be lost, if you perform a recovery. Be sure that back up all the data before performing a recovery. Sometimes the steps below fail to launch the recovery on the first attempt. It is important to launch the recovery using this method at least twice."

Not the kind of message I expect to get for a brand new computer

Within 3 hours of opening I have rebooted 7 times due to system unresponsiveness. I have not installed any new software, right out of the box. Actually, just to get back to Amazon.com to write this review I had to wait 3 minutes for Internet explorer to open and received "Windows Explorer is not Responding" error twice.

I purchase notebooks for our office all the time... This is the first I have purchased from Amazon and by Acer.... It will be the last from either. Horrible product.

I got this as a "College Gamer" laptop. I could have spent more, but I don't feel it was necessary. The fastest graphics card in a laptop will cost you thousands of dollars, while a basic desktop card, like the one i got in my desktop, will out perform any laptop. So i saved my money and upgraded my desktop and got this affordable guy!

This little guy has a better multi-touch pad than the silver apple computers, and i am not lying. I can't emphasize on how much the feel of the mouse and the keyboard are when it comes to choosing this laptop. It makes the actual use of this laptop much more worth it! The only mouse that has as good as feel is the $1200 MBP.

This AMD Model is the way to go. From everything i know, the graphics will out perform the stock Intel graphics that are in the more expensive laptops. The quad core AMD is very powerful cpu. The i3 line are just dual core's that are slightly faster, but have way less graphic power! Not to mention that Intel charges more. So you get a great price/performance when you stick to AMD!

Description of Laptop:

It doesn't have any place where your finger prints smudge. The lid is solid and not all shaky. The screen is actually really crisp. Surprisingly there was very minimum bloatware, like a bunch of games, samsung software that is useful and a pack of cyber link software.

The GPU isn't the best you can get, but for under $600 you can't get anything this strong especially on the Intel's. All the other brands at this range all lack in 2 or more places and all the others lack when it comes to graphics.

This one is seriously top notch compared to the others. They all have smudge city, cheap plastic, worth-less touch pad and flimsy keys. The chiclet keys on this make cleaning it much easier. and way easier to use.

The weight on this is very light and I could barely feel it in my backpack. I started a timer from the second the computer booted and the battery said 100%. When the timer started I began playing Arkham City with 75% lighting. The laptop went "4 HOURS", with about 20% left. It probably would have gone another 30-40 minutes, but I don't like draining the battery.

There was surprisingly no heat at all. The hottest spot is on the left side of the mouse, but the other side was just cold. The sound on this can get as loud as you need. The sound played beautifully and was real crisp. I mean it was really nice quality!

Unless you want to spend an extra $250-$500, then this is your best bet for a good gaming/college laptop. Actually this is a laptop that everyone should get! Think of the graphics as the best you can get for under $800-$900!

4 GB of RAM, with one slot unoccupied. Throw in a second stick 4 GB and max out the system to 8 with ease. (This upgrade should be a priority. The full 8 gigs really make a difference.)

Lightweight. Not a back breaker if carried in backpack, or shoulder bag. Weighs 5 pounds, even!

Easy access hardware upgrades with ONE panel and screw to remove. So easy. HDD, RAM and optical drive access in one spot!

Real, fully functional restore disc set...with a catch. The Windows disc is factory made and comes in the box. The drivers/software disc must be made by the user, through an easy to use wizard interface.

Battery configuration is slightly annoying because of the 80/100 setting. When charged all the way to 100%, the overall life span will diminish like all batteries of this type. You have to go into the BIOS to fully unlock the battery, plus settings in Windows. A real hassle. If you leave it locked at 80% (factory, out of the box setting) it's supposed to ensure long life of the battery.

Restore disc set is one part aggravation because the optical drive is picky about which brands it'll use. Philips will not work. Maxell and Verbatim will. Of those that won't, it won't even read them or detect their presence.

Bloatware is partially necessary to get full functionality, such as enable/disable of: wifi, touchpad, backlight, print screen key, you get the idea. Without it, many important things will not work. At all.

All in all, this is a very powerful system for under $400.00. As is, it's a fantastic multimedia machine. With the mods I made (maxed out RAM, overclocked CPU, Blu-Ray I added) this is a hearty HTPC, with medium to high gaming, that is easily a desktop replacement PC that's portable!

I am a computer person. I do my research before I purchase anything and usually know exactly what I am getting for my money. I found this beautiful little machine and grabbed one for $399 while they were at Best Buy. I was completely surprised by the performance of this little beast. First of all, the laptop is beautiful, light, feels well built, and has a battery that lasts 4-5 hours even while streaming video over wifi. What really blew me away however was how strong the AMD processor and graphics capabilities are for a notebook at this price point. Since the video card shares system memory I bought another 4GB stick of DDR3 Ram for about $30 and installed it in the second slot (A nice feature) that starts empty on this laptop. I can run World of Warcraft on high with consistent 60fps everywhere, or even on ultra with up to 60fps in dungeons and 20-30fps everywhere else. I was also able to run The Old Republic for several hours at a time on medium settings with 30fps. This is a fantastic laptop for the price point, and for the mobile gamer or MMO person it gets the job done. The screen is very clear and resolution looks great, plus the HDMI port is a nice plus. Bluetooth built in is a feature usually found on more expensive laptops and makes uploading photos from your smartphone an absolute breeze.

Aside from the RAM upgrade, I would also recommend a decent laptop cooler mat, as like every other laptop this thing can get a bit hot after several hours of gaming. One that props the laptop up a little allowing air to move beneath it is the best. I picked up this one at best buy for $20 and it does a great job:All in all I paid less than $500 for the Laptop, Ram Upgrade, Cooling Pad, a nice case and a mouse for when I game.

This is unbeatable and if you are considering doing any gaming at all, I would definitely recommend these AMD systems over the I3 and I5. Only when you get up to I7 do they start beating the A6 in graphics capability.

I liked this laptop and still kinda like it, I got what it says on the box, fast, lightweight and cheap. The only reason what I am giving a 1 star is because of the material what is made of, pretty cheap plastic. I mean this is a portable device, the case material gotta be enough resistant for the daily handling: holding, lifting, open/close the lid, whatever. Well the story is after 2 months of having this computer, after a full day of working on it (was pretty hot btw) I grabbed from the left side of the case using one hand (lid open) and then I heard the crack and a big fissure appeared at the topcase, from the internal side of the lid support until reaching the keyboard (even through the keyboard by now), I gotta say this is not a heavy laptop, it weights the half of my former vaio computer and I am really not a strong person that crush stuff while holding it. I would feel better if I just dropped it or something, at least it would be my fault, but in this case I don't feel that was my fault, it wasn't a crack on the screen which the most common thing that might happen when you hold a laptop badly, it was a fracture on what's suppose to be the strongest part on a laptop. The temperature might also influence in this situation, but if you have bad quality plastic and heat then there is not surprise. Called Samsung and they consider this as an accident so it's not covered by the warranty. The crack is on the topcase, which is not a common replaceable part, after digging on the web for a replacement found a chinese site that sells the top cases for this brand, 50 bucks + shipping, received it today and during the replacement just found out that everything is cheap regarding this computer from screws to wires used on it. I almost broke the new topcase while replacing it. So beware about this product, use both hands while holding it, treat it extremely careful like you were holding a baby.

Before buying this I had my doubts if I'd ever get used to or get to like this weird keyboard. However, it did not take long. The keyboard is nice. The touchpad is the best I've had so far yet in a laptop.

The screen resolution is amazing once you get the proprietary ATI driver installed.

I had a little trouble with this system at the start. It would boot to blank black screen in Bodhi 1.3 and the current Linux Mint. However this seems to be an issue with "new hardware" and the lag time of linux support for the chipsets related to the amd a6 3400m family. luckily google pointed me to a message board thread relating to this; setting the linux kernel boot parameter with the option "radeon.modeset=0" made mint and bodhi installable from CD.

My summary of pros and cons is listed below.

Pro:

--speed of quad cores and GPUs, as well as the internal drives and memory; amazing, especially considering the low wattage of the integrated CPU chip--a supercomputer that runs on batteries, something that could not be imagined a decade or two ago.

--great value for a sub 500 usd laptop.

--amazing crisp display; has hdmi output also.

--great touchpad, good keyboard, and first impression makes me believe quality of components seems nice.

--fits in a backpack; light and fairly compact.

Con:

--bluetooth (nor wifi) cannot be turned off from bios directly or from keyboard fn buttons--needs --software to do it. haven't figured out how to make linux do it yet.

--no caps or num lock lights.

--only 3 usb jacks (1 left, 2 right)

--linux setup and support leaves a lot to be desired; thank goodness for message boards, google, and the kind geniuses posting on said boards.

--I'm still very bothered and annoyed by not being able to shut off the RF of wifi and bluetooth with a single tap of two buttons like I was in my old laptop.

I got mine at Best Buy for $530 and consider that a great price for an i5 2.6GHz processor and 6GB of RAM, plus a touch screen. I was a bit surprised to hear that Cnet considers this a "thick" and "old looking" laptop maybe for a grand you can buy one that is thinner and "newer looking", but for $530 I didn't see anything that would match it.

Anyway, here is the good:

Screen picture quality: 1600X900 on a 14 inch screen equals pretty amazing high-def stuff.

Speed: running IE, Chrome and Office 2013 (I am not into gaming, so don't know how that would work or not)

WiDi wireless screen sharing (with compatible devices).

Build quality

Not so good:

Touch screen not responsive to gentle touches, you have to poke it pretty hard some times (don't have much to compare this to besides a smart phone).

Keyboard is a bit cramped if you are used to full size keyboards, but you get used to it.

Strange keyboard issue when USB mouse is plugged in CTRL key "sticks" (not physically but in software), so as you type it acts as if CTRL is pressed all the time (typing an "i" turns everything italic, and so on).

For $530 I thought it was a great deal, and has worked out pretty good so far :).

After my Sony laptop was stolen, I embarked on a search for an affordable ultrabook or near-ultrabook style laptop. This was on sale at Best Buy for about $540 plus tax, and I thought I'd take a chance on it, but things didn't work out.

The Good:

Great screen for a machine in in this price range. 1600 x 900 resolution, and fairly good (not amazing) color saturation. Touch is fairly responsive, though single-taps require a fairly forceful touch.

Backlit keyboard is nice, even though the keyboard has shortcomings; more below.

Nice feature set/specs for a machine in this price range. i5 processor, 6GB Ram, 500GB Hard drive with a 24GB SSD for booting.

Boots quickly and is fairly snappy, thanks to the SSD.

Lots of ports.

Design, while cumbersome and thick (more below), feels sturdy and nearly indestructible, as long as you can live with the weight...

DVD/CD drive is a nice feature.

The Bad:

HEAVY. A laptop in this size range feels like a brick at 5.5 pounds. This was one of the deal breakers for me.

Mushy/erratic keyboard. The keyboard was missing keystrokes with fairly heavy typing, and you can visibly see it buckling even with light typing. The whole thing has a chintzy, mushy feel, and leads to a horrible typing experience.

Chintzy plastic touchpad; clicks feel hollow and wobbly. Supports two finger scroll, but not any other two-finger gestures (couldn't right-click with two finger tap, for example)

Battery Life: I eeked out about 3 hours on a good day; otherwise, battery life wasn't impressive.

Overall, the heavy weight, low battery life, and sub-par typing experience prompted a return from me. It's not a bad machine, with a nice middle-of-the-road touchscreen and great internal specs; but for a road machine, I needed better battery life and more portability.

I have been using this laptop for 1-2 month now on daily basis, got it right before school started.

I try to take care of by turning it off every 1-2 days, and use high security. The laptop still turns on and off quickly. I have had several updates, and right now it seems I am not guaranteed to have the laptop to upgrade to windows 8.

Pro: small, light weight, quiet, and doesn't get heat up. It has a beautiful smooth look to it. Has a pretty loud speaker.

Cons: I guess it's pretty expected from customization. A lot of the common features easily crash. I can barely look at pictures with this laptop.

The Nvidia Geforce 420M 1GB doesn't seem to do anything more compare to my old Toshiba with no dedicated graphics card.

What annoys me the most is the keyboard. the mouse is constantly interfering with what I type. Even now, whenever my hand hoovers over the mouse pad, the typing tool gets navigated to a different location, so I have to keep putting it back to where I am typing (if you have to write a lot, this keypad will annoy the heck out of you). I am in pharmacy school, and it requires fast note taking in class, it is really annoying when the mouse goes all over the places which I have to make the mouse to come back to the right place and miss many important things professors talk about. One trick I now use is to just turn off the mouse pad, however that still causes inconvenience.

Another thing that bother's me is the up and down arrow key. The two of them are the size of 1 key, and it's ridiculously hard to get use to (which I still haven't). The sound bottom doesn't work sometimes no matter how you try to press the volume up/down, though I can live with that.

The laptop doesn't fold that far flat, so when I try to play bass, I'd have to bent down a lot to see the screen.

The battery life has decreased significantly it seems since the time of purchase. Even though I try to use the battery life whenever I can and fully charge it before unplugging. It has froze on my once, which I am not so happy about considered it is only 1 month old.

6-22-2013 update:

The battery completely died on me in less than a year, it shows that it has 0% and does not charge. So I performed a diagnosis on "HP Support Assistant" for the battery and got an error code. Then I made a call to 800-HP invent (or 800-474-6836), fortunately the laptop is still under warranty, I was able to get a free battery ($120 worth) to be shipped to me soon.

9-14-2013 update:

After 1 year of normal use in professional school (without those gaming or photoshop stuff), this lap top is getting extremely annoying. Not only it turns on or wakes up from hibernate mode with constant beep sound every time, it also has a sticky key on the down bottom, making me unable to read any of my documents! My last HP from 8 years ago was so good to me, but this terrible experience have made me never want to chose HP again.

My old toshiba protege(r830) died and I recieved my money back from squaretrade.

I had a hp ultrabook envy4 but it wasn't user upgradeable. I returned it and I recieved this inside.

This is my 1st HP laptop and so far the quality is great.

1) Upgradeable to 16gb ram(User Serviceable). This is great for virtual machine testing.

2) User serviceable bays for battery and hard drive.

3) Fast processor and speedy performance.

4) Great screen and the webcam works well.

5) Nice keyboard with good feedback.

Cons:

1) Heavy. at 4.78 lbs. My toshiba was 3.8lbs

2) I wish I didn't have the dvd drive which adds to the weight.

Purchased this little computer at the end of December 2012 for a fantastic price at Amazon. Smooth transaction and speedy delivery. Had it charging up and using it straight from the box. No issues, very quiet and stays extremely cool even if on for long periods of time. Not heavy, weighs exactly 5 pounds on the bathroom scale. I had a small Acer netbook prior to this and my Envy is just as portable and quite attractive as well. It does come with a CD burner which was not listed in the product details. Needed to call Amazon to confirm this. The keys feel fine to me, as there was one review that stated the opposite. It is fast, the screen displays bright and clear graphics. Windows 8 takes a while to get used to but I like it so far, especially the "app" format. All kinds of ports (3 USB) and card reader. Holds a charge for a very long time. Been off the charger all day and still has 7+ hours on it. I searched for a long time to find a lightweight computer with a decent speed and memory that could be my workhorse, as I am using this mainly for business. This little gem has it all! Totally satisfied!!

I purchased a dm4 customized from HP's website, with an Intel Core i3-2350 and 6 GB of RAM, a little over a year ago. As a student on a budget and someone whose last HP computer lasted five years with no issues, it was basically my six-hundred dollar answer to the looming shiny drop-shadow of the Macbook. The beats audio took me a little while to get used to--it sounded kind of off at first--but once it became familiar, I had no issues with it. You can turn beats on and off if you want to (fn + b), and the speakers' sound without it is very tinny and not nearly as good, so that helps endear it to you too. I also have a light-up keyboard, which I thought would be a novelty, but is actually incredibly useful and worth the $25. It makes typing in the dark so, so much easier. My only complaint is it's a straight on-off function, with no changeable degrees of brightness. One point for the Mac.

In order to avoid rambling, I think I'll break this up:

Build: Compared to my last monolith of a computer, the dm4 Pavilion is light and portable, although it doesn't feel as sturdy as some of the other computers out there. This is mostly because, despite the good-looking brushed metal on the back and body, it's more or less lined with plastic, and kind of crunchy to open and close. I would never describe this as a computer I wasn't afraid of breaking. Actually, just a couple days after I got it, I bumped the edge of it into something, and there's now a permanent dent in the silver plastic lining. Very attractive. But it's held together after a year of use and having a couple liquids spilled on it, so it gets points there. It's pretty solid overall.

Speaking of the brushed metal, I can tell you that after a couple months of steady use, it starts wearing to a lighter color where your hands rest. I don't mind this, but it's pretty visible. And one of the things I reliably do not like about HP computers is the finish they use on the backs; this thing holds fingerprints like a menace. If you care about appearance like I do, you'll be cleaning it a lot. And, again, the plastic of the top part gets scratched up and looks flimsy next to the metal itself.

And this may just be my computer, but one thing I've always had issues with is the CD tray. It pops open a lot when you don't want it to just because of how you're holding the computer, and mine is really hard to close again. It gets caught on itself, almost, and I have gotten really annoyed with it before.

Oh, and lately the fan will catch on something and start buzzing really loudly. And I've had the battery randomly pop out once or twice for no reason.

Okay, in short, I am very fond of my computer, but its construction feels a little on the cheap and careless side.

Keyboard: This is my first computer with chicklet keys, and I like them a lot. I find them really easy to type on, and I love how they don't hold dirt the way an older keyboard would. There are F-keys to control the volume of your speakers and brightness of the screen, which is nice, except mine stop working sometimes. Especially the audio controls--it will bring up the "I'm changing the volume!" wheel, but it won't actually do anything until I open up the volume control in the bottom right corner and do it myself.

I personally really like the touchpad, and find it appropriately responsive. I like the slightly rough texture it has, and it almost always picks up on my finger flicks to scroll, enlarge something, etc. The buttons have a pretty loud click when you hit them, but that's about it. I like that they're separate from the touchpad itself, and I like that they're even and in a place that's easy to use and intuitive under my hands.

Screen/Lighting: Now, I'm not a graphics kid, so I'll have little to say about the color quality and pixel quality other than it's good enough for me. I can say for sure that it isn't as vibrant and beautiful as the colors on a Mac, but it serves. Having easily adjustable brightness is always nice, because I tend to have my screen a lot darker than most people. And my screen has survived getting stepped on by a full-grown Great Dane and didn't crack or break, so kudos to it there.

Performance: When I first got this computer, it was hella fast, especially compared to my old one. And, even now, it opens things pretty quickly and pretty reliably. It's starting to get slow after reboots, but I think this is inevitable. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and I will say that my computer usually freezes for a moment or two while opening it, which it didn't do in the beginning. Still, it's serving me very well thus far.

I know I don't have a fantastic graphics card and shouldn't be too uppity about what my computer can and can't do in terms of video games, but I've found it frustratingly slow at some fairly low-demand games. It lags hard on Minecraft unless I'm on the HP Recommended power plan and have my rendering set to Short in the game. I guess the recommendation here is be sure you know what you want to do with this computer, and make sure you can do it based on what you put in and what kind of graphics card you're willing to buy. Mine gets a little laggy on bad days if I have too many things open at once.

The battery life has been really good to me so far on this thing, to the point where, over winter break at my parents' house, I could come downstairs with it fully charged in the morning and not have to go plug it in until around five or six at night. Lately, I think it's finally puttering out a little. If I leave and take it for a 9 AM class, on lowest brightness settings and power saver battery mode, it's dying out on me by about 2 PM. But hey, I think it's done pretty well for how long I've had it!

Gimmicks: No matter what they say about the webcam, it's not very good. Highly pixelated, weird lighting, stupid added effects, take a long time to load, the whole nine yards. I mean, it can take a picture or record a video, and if you want it to Skype with it can hold its own, but it's by no means fantastic, especially in low light. The sound when you record isn't bad, at least; it's pretty human.

HP in general has a really bad habit of filling your computer with dumb things you do not need, and this one is no exception. On start-up it automatically gives you HP Assistant, a bunch of windows of stuff, and other things that don't do much for me but take up space, and a while ago I did a major re-haul and uninstalled a ton of what HP started me with. I haven't missed any of it. If you know what you're doing with computers, you'll probably want to do the same. I've also never, ever had a reason to use QuickWeb, although the idea behind it is nice, I guess.

Overall: My computer serves me well, and I'm very attached to it. My daily computer needs mostly consist of word processing, internet browsing, gaming, and painting/designing, and the Pavilion dm4 has held up on all of these counts. If you don't want a super intensive monster computer that can do everything, I still think this guy is a good choice. Just remember it comes a little cheap for a reason and may be flimsier than you want it to be.

Both are gamers and are very impressed with it's abilities.

Just update the drivers on the video card (which you should do anyway on a new laptop) and it will handle anything you can throw at it. My youngest had a powerful dell desktop he was gaming on before this. He says this Ultrabook leaves his desktop in the dust.

It would be hard to imagine anyone being less than impressed with this machine.

This is a great computer if you want to play with pics, surf the web, mess with your music collection.

This is not the Mac if you want serious processing power of lots of inputs to create a home network.

Look to a MacBook Pro or iMac for that.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had more inputs.

This is a pricy computer already, now I have to spend more to get adaptors.

I wish it was still available in black or you could opt for the non-glaze display.

I had intended to purchase my mother a Macbook for some time now. I wobbled between the several models I considered. However, Apple's late October 2009 update to the white polycarbonate MacBook made the decision much easier.

Reasons for my Decision With this update to the 13-inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry-notebook impressive numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo is the same processor found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro (it has 160GB only).

Yes, considering the larger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook actually gives you a higher specification computer in some regards than the $200 more expensive MacBook Pro 13-inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody provides strength, and I must say this notebook is very solid. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a long-life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. In terms of performance, my mother reported to me simple usage of nearly six hours on a charge. Impressive. Blows away my older Mac notebook's battery.

Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro would offer, but my mother would likely not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces very carefully as it will show light scratches easily.

The bottom of the MacBook is a bit strange. It is a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I'm not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I would recommend wiping off whatever surface you are going to sit the computer on, to remove light dust, if you worry about the computer's appearance.

Overall, I was looking to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I didn't want to compromise performance, and I feel I didn't despite choosing this entry-level MacBook. Truly, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only slightly faster. These computers are getting faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.

The price to value of this MacBook is remarkable. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a larger hard drive. You can't argue with that. I didn't, and the MacBook has impressed.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I've been through 3 PC laptops in 4 years and only one of those didn't have fatal hardware failures or viruses. The main reason I did this was because I've heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple products. I waited for the new models to come out first before I got one because I have a habit of always wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I'm used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough getting used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I've had it for almost a 2 1/2 weeks now and so far I couldn't be happier. There are very few flaws that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too "sharp" and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher would yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about getting the Macbook pro but could not justify spending more money and getting the same/lower specs (i.e. 160gb hard-drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery). I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I don't type in the dark so I can do without the backlight keyboard. At this rate I don't see myself going back to PC anytime soon!

This is my 4th Apple laptop (PB150, White iBook, MacBookPro Alumnium). All personally owned. I've also been a user of many PC laptops for work. Our last 2 Mac Laptops have been our sole home computer when we've owned them. Getting probably 6 hours of daily average use.

I have to say that this new unibody MacBook is by far, my favorite laptop I've ever owned and used.

We've been using it for a month now with the same rate of usage. Maybe more because of the holidays.

It has some slight imperfections.

1. I wish it still had composite TV out, but when I become the last person on earth to finally upgrade to HDTV, it will be ready (3rd party HDMI/video out cables are cheap).

2. The edge of where your arms go needs to be rounded because it slightly slices into your wrists. (I haven't filed it down yet, but will...)

3. And sure, target mode in firewire would be nice. But, it's rarely needed ($15 for a shell and a disassembly gets you to the harddrive in the disasterous event your system is so fried you can't get a network hookup going).

4. An SD slot would be nice too. But, everything I have a card in is USB anyway, and I already have card readers for when I don't (or my devices connect directly anyway).

5. It's more expensive than Windows laptops. But, at under $1000 ($850 if you're smart with rebates and deals) the MacBook makes buying a Mac almost equivalent to a nicer Windows laptop. Almost. Well, it's at least not embarrassing to admit anymore.

But, that's it with the negatives.

It's slim and sleek. The unibody means no flex when I hold the corner with one hand (RIP 2.5 year old G3 iBook with graphic chip recall). The plastic means no permanent deformation when I drop it from 4 feet (RIP 2.5 year old MacBookPro with a slow overheating death near the corner I dropped it on.) The battery life is impressive. (RIP every PC laptop I've ever used within 6 months.)

The white keys mean keyboard lighting is not such a big deal. The glossy screen is not really that glossy. The screen is bright and sparkly. The processor is speedy. (I run Windows on it just fine.)

The 250 gig HD is big enough (I'd need a few terrabytes to hold all my media anyway.) 250G is enough to simply expose the low end MacBook Pro for what it is Apple's cynical attempt to milk money out of folks.

The mousepad is just wonderful. Takes a day or two to get used to not having a "button", but it's simply wonderful after that. Two fingers for a right mouse click and for scrolling. I zoom in and out of dual browsing sessions with the pinch like I never expected to do. And it's CENTERED in front of the screen. I don't know what Windows design idiots decided to stop centering their mousepads and keyboards and to give them tiny recessed buttons, but I refuse to personally purchase a lopsided laptop where you have to flop 4 inches off one leg just to type and where your thumb is rigidly fixed to an ergonmically challened button. The keyboard is equally well designed and easy on the fingers for this touch typist.

And, 2 of my Apple pet peeves have been fixed: the latchless lid is perfectly designed, and, there's no feet to get rubbed off the bottom anymore.

Oh, and it's light. Not MacBook Air light. But, surprisingly light and thin. I carry a 17" Windows machine for work. Yet, the 13" screen rarely feels restrictive. And, its performance blows away the MacBook Air. Try running full screen video off of YouTube on a MacBook Air. It can't do it. This MacBook has the juice to display without stuttering.

Plus, importing the old data from my old MacBookPro was seamless. Import and done. Just a few apps that needed to be upgraded for 64 bit and Snow Leopard. No crap on the desktop to remove like a new Windows computer. No annoying security messages. No virus worries. Basically, ZERO "Windows" worries. (Yes, I've got XP running on VM ware fusion and Vista on Boot Camp for certain games. So, I know of what I speak... Yes, I'm a masochist.)

And finally, it's MacOSX. I'm the kind of guy that has people coming to me for tech help at work, asking for recommendations "for a new PC cause their old one has a virus". They need help reinstalling windows. They have driver issues. They have reps from foreign countries advising to "recover" their systems (which means wiping the entire Harddrive). They have trojans running wild. They are always confused and frustrated. The only ones who don't have problems are the ones who are too scared to do anything with their computers. Or, who are technically savvy enough to navigate the waters. Who like the complication.

The annoying things people have come to accept from Windows computing astound me. As a daily user of both OS's for decades, I always breathe a small sigh of relief when I get back to my Mac.

MacOSX is wonderful. It rarely frustrates. (Just scan down the list of Amazon's laptop best sellers, and see the average stars for Mac machines vs. Windows machines. Clearly, there is a difference in quality and ease of use that justifies the difference in cost.)

So, this review is much longer than I intended. But, after reading the initial reviews a month ago -of Mac zealots who hadn't purchased one who were whining about "no firewire" -of clean freaks who worried about microscopic scratches (barely a blemish on ours in this household with 3 cats, a dog, and 3 and 6 year old kids), I just had to put my 2 cents in. This is, in my opinion, the best laptop Apple has released.

Why? Because it is inexpensive (for a Mac) and does everything you need it to do.

No Firewire. Isn't that big for current products as most things are going USB, but legacy items and high transfer rates of Firewire 800 or sustained throughput of 400 would have been nice.

Battery is non-removable. Again, could be a big deal for some.

"Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean

While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.

Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

Wow, where to begin? fantastic computer...in use as I write this! fast, responsive, color is a mahogany-red, NOT an "apple" red...very nice finish...true to color as in picture, no dissappointment here! I bought this for a work at home customer service job. It could have been a great computer, but there is something wrong with they keyboard. When I am typing the letters are jumping all over the place, and some of the words when I type them are being erased as I type them. I have never had this happen with a laptop. I surely cannot use this and type in customer accounts and type reports like this. It is going to slow down productivity because I have to constantly go back and correct words that get messed up.

We ordered this machine because of the excellent specs for the given price point. However, we encountered blue screen issues for our first unit, and also on the second unit we ordered as replacement.

The first unit worked well; but after a few hours of surfing the net, it blurted a "blue screen". We kept the machine for a few more days thinking that this is a legit error or conflict that will eventually be resolved by driver updates and/or windows updates. The blue screen, however, continued to hound the machine and has appeared intermittently for two weeks. We decided to return the item for a replacement for the same item.

The second machine (replacement unit) arrived and we were quite happy of the fast turnaround (three days shipping is awesome). We opened the package, seated the battery in place and turned on the machine for some testing. After only a few minutes of surfing the internet, we were shocked to see the same blue screen (no time to check up the error codes though) on this second unit. We decided to ship this one back on the very next day; it's quite unusual to have the same blue screen issue to appear for two identical machines.

We are not really sure as to what's the problem with these machines, but I guess part of our expectation is for the machine to work well out-of-the-box. I haven't heard or read too much issues with Windows 7 on a well-built machine throwing out blue screens when you haven't even installed much software into it. We were disappointed with this particular machine only FX400-062US (we previously owned an MSI U123 netbook, it never encountered issues like this) and would not want to have it anymore. We requested for a refund so we can get something that at least works with regards to specifications and common customer expectations. I hope this helps you.

For the price and functionality of this laptop, it sure beats investing in something less functional such as an iPad (not trying to bash the iPad). My main goal was a portable device to take with me to be able to work on, tether a camera on a photo shoot, take notes in meetings with clients, or show a client my portfolio.

Overall, it is a really good size for me. I used to have a 17" laptop which became too cumbersome to lug around everywhere.

I do have a few gripes... the "a" key has a different springy feel when pressed, and the left mouse button has a jiggle when released. I'll see if a break in period losens these up. I also noticed that he lid when closed has a little bit of play on the one side. ...ok, maybe I rate it 3.5 stars.

The matte black finish of the machine is very cool, and overall it is very light.

I have had this laptop for 3 years now and it has held up great so far. The battery life is excellent and the computer has enough grunt to get through most work. The computer runs solidworks fine as well as games fairly well. It isn't the most powerful laptop but it is certainly more than enough power for typical users and even those who need a simple workstation type computer for graphic or design work. I mainly purchased this laptop for its size and weight as I use this as a portable workstation. My only complaint would be the track-pad. The track pad itself works great but the position is a little awkward and it can be bumped when typing causing the mouse pointer to move. I normally use a mouse and disable the trackpad so this isn't too much of an issue for me. When it is time to upgrade again, I would definitely consider MSI.

My brother spent over 700 dollars on this trash like notebook that crashes and freezes in such random times. I didn't do any upgrades and used it just as it came. This computer was always on a desk, meaning I never carried it around or dropped it. After only three months of using it, the CD rom drive stopped working. I could not get it to open it even after talking to tech support rep. I sent it to their repair center, which took literally over three weeks AFTER RECEIVING the notebook (I checked the tracking). I got it back and CD rom is opening now but still don't use it much because it started to act funny again... I don't feel like sending it again because you can't fix a product that is built like a garbage like this one. Just don't waste your money on this particular FX models.
