Discount HP Envy 17-3290NR 17.3-Inch 3D Laptop (Silver)

First of all be warned that I don't have this exact model, but Envy 17-3290el which shows the following differences:

processor: Intel i7 3612QM instead of 3610QM (slightly lower power consumption)

monitor: 2D instead of 3D

disc: only 1Tb HDD, no SSD drive

I made the following additions to the product:

Crucial m4 256Gb mSata SSD drive: the 1Tb magnetic drive is a bad performance bottleneck and the 256Gb SSD used as system drive allows the computer to run 3-4 Windows XP or Linux virtual machines flawlessly

matte screen protector: the glass-covered display is way too reflective, so that the matte cover improves usability radically

wireless mouse: I just can't get used to any touchpad, but that's probably my fault

Good things:

performances: great CPU, good GPU, fast with SSD drive

expansion: good. 1 Sata6 2.5" bay, 1 Sata3 2.5" bay, 1 Sata6 mSata bay, 4 usb3, 1 Hdmi, 2 Display port

battery: lasts up to 6-7 hours of my normal use (internet, writing, light web development) and 3 hours of intensive gaming. I appreciate HP battery management, as it doesn't continue to charge a full battery when connected to the network: I had this problems with Acer notebooks and it took painfully careful management or the battery would die too soon

display: good, not an IPS one, but a TN display with good viewing angle, contrast and color rendition; just too reflective

audio: just the greatest notebook audio I ever heard

keyboard: good. To dim/increase backlight you should press the keyboard backlight button plus up/down arrows (this was not in the manuals and I had some issue as it was my first backlit keyboard)

heating: none at all. Unless the battery is charging, the 120w adapter stays cold or just a little above room temperature. Putting a roof to CPU performance at 99% in battery management in order to disable turbo boost, CPU and GPU stay below 50 C even with intensive gaming and CAD/CAE

Bad things:

display too reflective, but with a matte screen protector you wave this problem goodbye

problems with the installation of Windows 7 from recovery discs. After several trials I even gave up trying to install from the recovery discs to SSD drive: I finally downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64 from Microsoft website, made an installation DVD and registered through the registration key on the bottom of the computer. However, this way I lost the Adobe Premiere/Potoshop Elements and I am still looking for a way that get those back

support: well, the good thing is that you can find a lot of help in disussion forums. Tha bad is just too bad: at the first problem i get a "Shut down and disconnect the battery" suggestion from italian support, which doesn't fit with the integrated battery, and the support should know...

size: well, if you choose this notebook, just remember that it's size and weight are huge compared to some more expensive or less performing alternatives, altough it's smaller than gaming laptops with similar performances

I'm very pleased with this Envy. The price was great and it was easy to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, add a nice SSD and third drive (you need to get the drive carrier from another company--I used newmodeus and it was perfect).

The build quality is pretty strong and it's a fast machine. It replaced an aging Dell Studio 1745. Like others said, the battery is integrated, but I never swapped batteries in my Dell. While I wish the battery would hang on a little longer, it''s adequate enough to lug into the conference room for 1-2 meetings.

Yes, it is a large machine. It serves a niche for those of us that want a single machine that does it all. The Envy fits the bill nicely.

Received mine from Amazon at the beginning of the month and am very pleased. Mine did come with the Norton 2 years free. The 3D works fine. System start up is lightning fast. The light up keyboard is great and the machine runs pretty quiet and stays cool. Although I'm not thrilled that the 80gb hard drive is so small, I'm happy that it's a SSD. I foresee a day not too far in the future where it will fill up quickly and at that point I plan on replacing the drive with something larger but also SSD. I just have to try to make sure everything that's non-operating system is installed on the D drive. The D drive is partitioned into two additional smaller drives for a Recovery Tool and Recovery Data.

There wasn't much bloatware on the system, which is great for once. The speakers are rather nice for a laptop, it has two headphone jacks on the left side and two display ports and an HDMI port on the right side. Unfortunately, the HDMI port is too far up on the right side. So, it's near your mouse hand if you're right handed. However, on the rare occasions I plug my computer into an HDMI cord, it's because I'm using my computer for whatever reason with my TV; so wouldn't be using my computer directly anyway..but still annoying nonetheless. I like the touchpad, which is unusual for me. It operates multi-touch kind of like an I-pad or I-pod. You can also turn it on or off directly through the touchpad by double-tapping in the corner of it. The screen is glossy and the colors are vivid thanks to the glossiness. However, this also means it reflects like crazy. But, this being a 17" laptop and not that portable--for me anyway, I don't really see this as an issue as it probably won't be leaving home. One thing that worries me is the slot drive. I can see this possibly being an issue at some point in the future but will deal with it when it happens. There's an eject button on the keyboard. Another nice thing I like is the keyboard function key locks so you don't have to hold down the function key when using a function button. Also, love the num pad. This is a great desktop replacement!

The Envy is a great line of laptops. They're built well, they look good, and they deliver straightforward computing with no surprises. I set this laptop up for my Dad before giving it to him and I'm happy to report there was very little in the way of promotional software that had to be uninstalled.

Personally, I would never buy the 17" model for myself as it really becomes more of a desktop replacement at that point and not very mobile. However, my Dad loves the larger size and he is very happy with it.

This laptop may only have an i3 but it still is really fast. Its super light and really well built. The screen looks great.

One important thing I did that made this laptop even more of a deal was to:

Format the SSD drive and install Windows on it. This allows the laptop to boot to Windows all on the SSD and really speeds everything up. It also clears up any asus bloatware and allows you to install only what you need. Also after installing Office and some other key programs to the SSD, and turning of the page file and hibernation I have 11gb free. Other than that I plan to install most programs on the traditional hdd.

The other thing I did was put a 8gb stick of ram in it ($44). This may or may not have been necessary but it can't hurt to have a total of 10gb of ram.

Overall this laptop is one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. Installing Windows on the SSD and still having the large traditional hdd really gives you the best of both worlds.

I've had this for about a week now and unfortunately posted a glowing review before I had a good amount of time with this laptop. I suppose that is because it looks so fantastic that it really does give you a great first impression.

Here are some issues I have found:

1. FAN NOISE

Initially I said it was practically silent. The fan noise itself is not bad. However the fans on my laptop seem to turn on and off with too little time in-between cycles. It becomes quickly annoying to hear the fan power up, stay on for 10 (sometimes 5!) seconds and then power down for ten seconds then power up again etc. Having said that I am particularly sensitive to fan noise. Most other people would probably be happy with it just stay clear if you have sensitivity to fan noise like me.

2. SCREEN

There is a haze on the screen that is very irritating and hard on the eyes. It also distorts photos slightly in my opinion. I guess that is the price of a matt screen? In any case I hate it. The colors are also off out of the box. It was set far too blue and I ended up spending hours trying to tweak it just right. I've never had to do this before out of the box.

3. SD CARD

An inserted SD card sticks out more than 1/2 way!

4. HDD

THe HDD has only 200GB or so free out of the box so there is plenty of optimizing to do to make full use out of the 320gb space.

5. BLOATWARE

Lots of bloat from Asus

And here are the nice surprises:

1. BATTERY LIFE

I can get about 6 1/2-7 hours out of it just browsing the web (flash ads blocked).

2. BUILD and LOOKS

Fantastic piece of equipment and solidly built.

3. SSD

The SSD cache can be used like a regular drive as someone else mentioned. Installing windows onto this makes the system fly. Boot up time was faster than my wife's Toshiba Z835 for instance at around 20 seconds. You can have plenty of storage space on the HDD whilst having the benefits of a fast SSD. This also allows you to have two separate installations (perhaps windows 7 and windows 8!) and it is easy to switch drives to boot up by hitting the esc key when you first switch it on. Fantastic!

4. TOUCHPAD

Actually works very nicely once you tweak it how you want eg using firefox YetAnotherSMoothScrolling for firefox and also setting the mouse wheel turns to 4 helps internet explorer scrolling.

Overall the screen and the fan turning on and off in quick succession just kills this for me so I cannot recommend it.

The comparison chart for this laptop says it comes with a Core i3-3217U 1.4 GHz CPU, and the description says that it comes with a 3rd gen Intel® Core i3-2367 processor (repeatedly). Neither of these is true. The laptop comes with an i3-2367, but this is a 2nd generation processor, not a 3rd. This makes a big difference as the newer generation runs faster, cooler, and has better video capability (Intel HD 4000 as opposed to HD 3000). In addition, the listing says it comes with a 320 gig 7200 RPM hard drive, whereas the laptop has a 5400 RPM hybrid hard drive.

With a 3rd gen CPU and a fast hard drive, I believe this laptop would be worth the price. However, the listing is very misleading. Another reviewer has brought this up already and nothing was changed, and the question was brought up months ago by someone else in the questions section. I was hoping that they had refreshed the specs and bought it anyway, but it's still the same old chipset. Very misleading.

The product itself is performing as expected so far; it is exactly the form factor we wanted, and we will need to decide if sticking with old technology or returning for a refund based on an inaccurate listing would be better. I will say that the system needed to reboot about six times to install updates and until it finished, there were all kinds of errors during boot about drivers not installed, etc. Not a problem for us but could be for someone who is expecting it to just work.

This is a wonderful Ultrabook. The machine feels sturdy and rigid with its great metal shell. There is *no* flex on the keyboard and the display glides easily. Asus payed attention to detail on this machine, from the well placed USB 3.0 ports to the nice rubber gasket around the screen (to seal the keyboard + screen when closed) This laptop has a great UEFI implementation without all the mess of the Windows 8 SecureBoot. (it ships with Windows 7)

The only cons I really have for this laptop are:

* Erratic Synaptics trackpad. The thing has the tendency to go crazy if you rest one two many fingers near it.

* Lots of software keys. You have to have Windows running + the proper drivers loaded or the screen brightness + keyboard brightness keys don't function.

* Linux support is hit-or-miss given how new the chipsets are.

* Lots of shovelware pre-installed. I recommend tossing the restore image and loading your own OS ASAP.

One selling point of this ultrabook for me was the ease of hardware upgrades. Asus did a wonderful job using a simple set of metal (plus metal threaded) torx screws to hold the thing together. 2GB RAM on board, one ram slot available (filled with a 2GB DDR3 stick of RAM). 10GB Maximum ram after upgrade :)

This ultrabook is very sleek and lightweight. It is a quality product that looks as if a lot of thought was put into the design. Very light. I only have one issue. When booting up, (which is very quick), an error appears saying I have to install ATK0100 driver. It doesnt effect anything after you close the error windows, but is just a pain. So I went looking for this ATK0100 driver, and it seems like you need to purchase a program. These errors seem to be an ASUS thing. It would be great if I can just remove the program that is causing these error windows to pop up at start up. All in all this is a great little computer.

Update: The ATK0100 driver is actually on the laptop. Go to the start menu, programs, ASUS, edrivers and install the driver. This will stop the errors at boot up.

I bought this laptop from a different retailer several months ago. I am extremely happy with my purchase! The only thing that that could be improved on is the sound which could be a little louder. I LOVE that this has the HDMI port (this was actually the main reason I chose this!) By connecting an HMDI cable from my laptop to TV, I am able to surf the web on a 50 inch screen (as well as watch movies, etc). I noticed that someone commented on the keyboard personally, I have had no problems. My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis and uses my laptop frequently with no complaints. I think the keyboard is really cool! Plus if you shop around you can get a keyboard skin for under five bucks (The EB series fit perfectly!) I use this laptop for everything school (Microsoft office), graphic design(Photoshop), and download many things to the hard drive. It has continued to run flawlessly! Also, there is an "assist" button that connects you with live help from Sony 24/7 (It's free, I use it all the time!) I highly recommend this laptop!!

First of all, I would like to say that I have owned four different laptops now, and, out of all of them I like this one second best. Strongly missing my Dell Studio 15, right now.

This was a laptop purchased for me by a dear friend, since my Dell just kicked the bucket. We had decided on a cheaper Gateway laptop, but at the last minute she got me this one instead, thinking it was a nicer model.

I can say that it is a physically attractive laptop... you can't tell from the photos, but, it has a nice sheen and some glitter in it if you're into that sort of thing.

My number one complaint, and it's a pretty big deal to me, is that they tried to cram a full-sized keyboard onto a laptop, and the result is disastrous. When I got my Dell Studio, it was like putting on a glove in regards to comfort... but this Vaio is like putting a right shoe that is three sizes too small onto a left foot. My fingers and knuckles are already very sore due to the angle I have to type at to even try to put my fingertips on the correct keys. The touch pad is entirely unusable due to location and the texture they used for it.

Other than that, the graphics card seems pretty nice, Guild Wars looks beautiful on this laptop and runs wonderfully-just hope it'll handle Guild Wars 2. It seems to run things relatively fast, and came with Google Chrome already installed-I was happy about that tidbit. Windows 7 is a great Operating System.

For the price paid, it's a good buy, but will take getting used to for this ridiculous keyboard.

I got this laptop as a Christmas/graduation present from my parents. Overall, I'm so pleased. The battery life is amazing, the display is awesome, and the fact that it already came with Windows 7 was really convenient. And it's so lightweight! As a web design major, I carry this thing around everywhere. My previous Dell brickbook nearly dislocated my shoulders. I'd recommend maybe getting a different color if you're worried about fingerprints, though, as they're quite noticeable. The only negative thing I have is the touch pad gestures. I thought that the "pinch" zoom in/zoom out features would be really handy but while browsing the web it would often zoom in and out on me without me doing much. But I just disabled that feature and it's great otherwise. :) It's a great buy, I'd recommend it to anyone.

I bought this laptop after 3 months of very extensive research. For the price and the specs it seemed like the best possible choice. Boy oh boy was I wrong. After only 3 months I started to have problems with the charger. The laptop would only work if plugged in, it wouldn't charge and if the charger was even bumped, the computer would shutdown due to lack of power. So, called Dell and after a lengthy discussion to many other problems I'd been having as well, turns out the motherboard needed to be replaced, the whole charging housing, the hard-drive and the wireless card. I will say, I had great customer service and my laptop was returned quickly, but I did have to send it in. But, when I got the laptop back, they must've put in a different charger housing because my original plugin barely fits the hole, which was octogon before and is now round.

It has now been 1 year that I've had it and the screen is going out. There's something wrong with the hinge and it makes the screen do very funny things and I have to jiggle it until the screen is clear. So, this is the worst laptop ever made. It's just kind of cheap as well. The plastic on it is awful.

I got a great deal from Dell for a refurbished Inspiron 1750. There were no surprises, I knew what I was getting, and I've been very happy with it since. I wanted to balance the reviews for this, because 1 was a Dell customer service review, which has nothing to do with the product. It's capacity is way above what an average Internet/Word user would need, and the weight considering the size is lighter than most 17+ inch screens.

I bought this computer almost a year ago and I did not have one problem with it (except its slow because of my weak internet). There are also some awesome features like the biometric finger scanner which is really easy to setup if you are computer inclined, if not than you can find a tutorial on the web somewhere but it does require that you download a program which I have tested and it is safe and works really good. The touch screen volume control gets laggy sometimes. Another thing that is good about this computer is that it is INDESTRUCTIBLE. I have dropped it, thrown it on my bed every night and spilled drinks on it multiple times. My online chief complaint is that I have an issue with charging it, the charger is kind of funky and you have to either hold it or not move the computer itself. It also doesn't hold a charge TOO well but if you are just using it for home than keep the charger near. And a little minor thing is that it doesn't come with a lot of stock programs like solitaire, etc. Which means there is no security system so you can either buy norton or avg or just use the trials which is what I do. Bottom line is that this computer is GREAT. The charger came brand new and the computer said that there was a few minor cosmetic damages but there is nothing bad that I have seen.

First off, I came from owning a Dell 9100 Inspiron--we're talking 9 pounds, just for the laptop, nevermind the power cord and case and any other accessories. I thought of going down to a netbook for what I usually use my laptop for, but then I thought: "What if I wanted/needed to load my Adobe design products? So I thought, although I may not, I should get something that is powerful enough to handle some of my design work, but still be very portable.

This is a nice little computer. The feel of the keyboard is good. The screen is excellent. The processor speed seems fine, even though my Dell had a 3.2 processor. Somehow or another, I keep making the screen reduce in size. (Probably just need to get used to what I'm doing.) The speakers are not very loud. All in all, I think it is a good value for the money.

The audio in this laptop is the WORST! When you open some programs while you listen to music, the audio gets cluttered! and its very annoying... Also, the FAN in this laptop is ALWAYS ON! No matter what you do, the fan is always running.... making it very uncomfortable to take notes on classes etc.. since it produces a lot of noise which will force you to put the laptop to sleep! I do not understand why they programmed fan to run all the time... I understand the laptop produces heat, but that does not mean the fan has to run all the time and make it uncomfortable

I've had the laptop for a little over 2 weeks now and I am very satisfied with what I received, especially for the low price of $585. I'm a college student and the laptop satisfies every need. I have not tried many programs which heavily utilize resources such as the adobe cs5 suite but the PC has easily passed every test so far without stumbling once.

Pros:

The laptop is very small and compact making it very portable and easy to travel with.

The battery life is quite remarkable and surpassed my expectations based on other reviews. When on the "balanced" power option, the laptop does 3hrs and 30 minutes of continued use easily.

Good web cam quality. Face recognition software is a nice addition

Headphone jack sounds amazing with headphones, I've compared this laptop with my Ipad's sound with the exact same pair of headphones and this is the winner by far.

Nice, clean and simple hardware design.

Cons:

The speakers on this laptop is absolute crap, my previous laptop was an HP with the integrated Altec speakers which were pretty amazing. This is a huge step down.

The first 2 days that I listened to music on this laptop, the music would freeze for a half second and make a buzzing noise which was EXTREMELY annoying. I did some research and many others seem to have this problem. Since then the laptop has sorted itself out.

Excluding the slight audio problems, I have no regrets about purchasing this product so far and would recommend it to any person who is looking for more than a net book but less than a Heavy duty laptop.

For some reason I found this laptop $200 cheaper than anywhere else at the time. Christmas gift for the family. works great larger screen for the size of laptop. I was looking for something that wasn't too bulky, but I didn't want a tiny lap top. Also has built in DVD burner player. great inbetween size. I'm not taking the time to look up specs now, but as I remeber this had better performance and more memory than other ones I was looking at. Great PC for the money.

I absolutely LOVE this laptop! I love the large screen and its crystal clear display. I love the keys and their spacing since I have big hands. The numeric key pad is a plus too. Intel Core i5 processor, check! ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370 Graphics, check! Blu Ray player, check! Countless features to add simplicity and mobility to all my computing needs, check! This thing is fast! Set-up took all of 10 minutes and I was blazing through the Net in no time at all. This laptop has everything I want it to have with the small exception of built-in bluetooth. But that's minor since I can easily purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter for $20. I really thought there would be a noticeable difference in the speed and/or performance when compared to my desktop which has 8GB RAM. But, I have been pleasantly surprised and I may not even need to upgrade from the included 4GB. I also like that it has built in features to conserve battery life when not connected to the power cord. It automatically adjusts certain settings to optimize performance and then automatically readjusts when connected to the power cord. Overall this is a great laptop and I would definitely recommend it. This thing is so nice that I think I'll barely use my desktop now.

I have enjoyed using this laptop for about 6 months. Intel i5 processor is fast and 6GB of RAM makes multitasking a breeze. Start up is fast, about 20 seconds until fingerprint reader. Really like the fingerprint reader feature, keeps data quite secure. Keyboard has nice feel and touchpad is very responsive. Only change would be a larger delete key. The fit and finish is excellent. The brushed gunmetal aluminum cover and keyboard looks great. Appearance is much better than plastic. Highly recommend this laptop.

I type A LOT. This computer is NOT one I'd recommend if you also type a lot. The keyboard layout is not so great the shift key on the right is much smaller than a standard shift key. I thought I'd adjust to this, but after having the computer for almost a month, I'm still having to search for the shift key while typing, and I often hit the arrow-up key instead, which then requires me to readjust my position in the text I'm typing. Really an unnecessarily bad feature. However, this I can handle in comparison to the touchpad. My goodness!! This thing has a mind of it's own! I'll want to scroll down and it will instead enlarge the view of my screen. I'll want to enlarge the view of my screen and it will instead scroll down. I cannot copy things the way I'd like to either instead of highlighting a line of text to copy, the touchpad will interpret my attempts at highlighting as me wanting to pull and drag the text elsewhere (which might be all right if I was able to highlight an entire line before it attempts to do this). Totally useless. All this being said, I have to add that it's a fast machine. This is why I gave it 3 stars. It's worth the money in that respect for sure (I bought mine new for a little over $500). If you don't mind fumbling with a possessed touchpad, and having to search for the shift key over and over again (which slows down typing and leads to errors), then I'd recommend this laptop. But, if you type a lot or enjoy properly navigating with a touchpad mouse, DO NOT GET THIS LAPTOP!!

I was considering purchasing the Vizio laptop CT15-A5 only as choice #2...the Samsung Series 9, similar to that of the Vizio except for the 8GB RAM memory, was my primary focus. However, taking into consideration Vizio's specifications, its price, and Amazon's association, I decided to proceed with the Vizio acquisition.

The shipping/delivery packaging, both by Amazon and Vizio, was excellent, neat, tidy, safe, and simple. The laptop's stunningly unique appearance, [lightweight, slim] and durability cannot be denied. The manufacturer's future considerations and modifications must continue regarding opening the laptop with one hand, currently it can only be done with practice and patience. But this should not be a dealer breaker.

I cannot say enough about the boot ramp-up time, absolutely phenomenal with a threshold of 3-7 seconds. Additionally, Out of the box you will have approximately 200GB of free space. Let's not forget that Vizio has a MS signature allowing for no bloating software, I applaud this initiative.

Historically, from my own personal research, there has been significant negative reviews pertaining to Vizio's `track pads'. Not so with Vizio Windows 8, all functions are readily available, easily accessible, two finger scroll [up, down], zoom [in, out], double touch throughout, [right, left] click, etc. This is by far one of the best track pads I've ever used.

I compared the screen with the Samsung series 9 which is owned by a friend, the S9 is superior, especially while viewing in daylight. Saying this does not mean the screen is bad, I watched several movies and the screen did not disappoint me at all, it was adequate.

The battery charger's cable houses enough length extending its usage to outlets immediately out of reach. It also provides visual indicators such as `yellow', `green' notification during the charging process. Depending upon usage, battery life is approximately 3 hours on MS Signature Power Plan.

WIFI reception has not been an issue, it has actually been outstanding. Proximity during usage in my home, which is relatively spacious, far surpasses that of the Samsung 9.

I have yet to max-out speaker volume...Vizio has provided more than adequate sound during my recent movie viewing.

Amazingly, Vizio's heat venting and dispersemant system is incredible, I have not experienced any unnecessary grills during operation and the fan's performance is barely audible.

In conclusion, as its name implies, Vizio is visually impressive...it looks cool, feels cool, runs cool, and most importantly my fingers are happy dancing around its keyboard. On that note, Vizio, Visual that is, back-lit keys should have been implemented improving its night usage.

Congrats to VIZIO for getting the the windows 8 ultrabook right. This is the cheapest ultrabook of all core i7 that has a 256GB SSD. Start up is truely instant.. something around 1-2 secs. The design make it so slim that you don't mind carry it everywhere. It beats my old hp. The screen is great to watch movies, do work, read email. I love the multi-touch trackpad, especially with windows 8 gestures.

My only recommendation to Vizio is to offer a upgradable storage option. I would have enjoyed a 500gb one.

I want to add that if you update the synaptic touchpad driver to the latest (go to Synaptics website), you can enable 3 and 4 finger windows 8 gestures built specifically just for this large touchpad. It is really awesome!

I previously owned a 15" Macbook pro i5 (about 2 years old) and moved to this vizio. I've been using the vizio for about a week and can comment on most important aspects of it in comparison to my old mac.

Pros

Designfeels great. Fantastic build qualityeasily on par with my mac. very light too! The chassis feels very solid with very minimal flex. I think I remember reading vizio is using some unibody-type construction like the macbooks do.

ScreenFantastic. I got so sick of the glossy screen on my mac so the matte screen on the vizio is a very welcome change. The resolution is fantastic and viewing angles seen to be better than most laptops.

SpeedI am doing mostly document editing, lots of web browsing and some video watching. Most computers are plenty adequate for this and the vizio is definitely overkill here. The SSD is incredibly fast (both in real world use and benchmarks). One of the best thing about this computer to me though is that it is so fast and does NOT get hot. My macbook would literally burn me if I played a flash video or anything slightly intense. This vizio doesn't have ANY heat problemsI'm really impressed here.

Neither pro nor cons:

Battery lifefor web browsing and document editing you should expect to get about 4.5 hours. This is fine for me but it simply can't compare to the 6.5 hours I got with my mac.

Speakersgood for laptop speakers, but they lack a lot of lows and are definitely inferior to my previous mac's speakers.

Touchpadit is probably the best touchpad you will find on a PC! That being said, it still isn't quite as good as the apple touchpads. What I think I miss the most is how fluid the scrolling was on the macthis vizio can't quite compare although I think it is more a limitation of microsoft windows.

Windows 8Windows 8 is just plain weird. I'm slowly adjusting to it, but this is seriously weird. I've used PCs for all except the last two years (when I got my mac) and have had quite a few confusing moments with it. I think I will get adjusted fine eventually though. The good news is that Windows 8 appears to be very efficient power and speed-wise.

Cons:

Keyboardit kind of sucks. The key travel is very low and there is a small amount of flex. Put these two problems together and it is definitely not the easiest computer to type on. You will end up accidently double-typing a lot of letters. I think this may be something I will adjust to though. It just will require you to adjust the way you are used to pushing on keys though. The keyboard on the macbook is the best there is on any computer and it definitely beats the vizio. Note the samsung 15" ultrabook has similarly low key travel issues too but I found it more comfortable to type on that this computer.

ChargerTwo problems: 1. It is piano gloss blackwhat this means is after 1 day of use you will already have plenty of scratches on it and it is going to look like crap after a couple of weeks. 2. I really wish more comopanies would design their power bricks so they can be directly plugged into the wall like apple does. As someone who always commutes with my laptop it is really annoying to have to pack not only the charging brick but ALSO a huge annoying cord as well.

Overall, I'm very happy with this computer though. I did pay significantly less than retail during a blackfriday sale but you will be very hard pressed to find a 15" ultrabook with specs anywhere near this for the price. Unless you really need the extra space and speed of the CT15-A5 the CT15-A4 may be a much more affordable option and likely has even better battery life.

I finally bit the bullet and bought it from microsoft store for $799.

Mainly because I thought that for 1080p IPS Laptop with Core i7 and 256GB SSD is pretty good deal and I can live with any downsides. And I think I am justified.

The main feature of this laptop is 1080p IPS MATTE SCREEN. Very vibrant and well color balanced. I am absolutely thrilled how good it is. I had a think pad x201 tablet and it was difficult to work with in direct sun but this one is workable even at the half brightness. The brightness is a little bit more than SONY VAIO S series 15" notebooks.

The second most important feature is 256GB SSD. It is not a whole lot of space to store your media. But other than that it is more than adequate. I run two VMs off of it and have documents and other stuff and does the job. Pretty snappy boot time. I had a samsung SSD SATA-II based and it is easily twice as fast as that.

If these two features haven't made you fall in love with this then third one is large trackpad and bloatware/trialware free windows. It looks nice and very sleek and lightweight and has a neat look. Boots in 3 seconds.

Great. Now stop here and go buy the laptop!!!

Okay Great you bought it!!! Honeymoon is over and now work on the compromise and respect each others's feeling. Stop complaining about the keyboard! Yeah I know you don't like it. The old thinkpad had a pretty good keyboard...but live with it. After sometime you will begin to like it.

Yes my only wish was dedicated PgUp and PgDown key and full size arrow keys. The key does misses sometimes. But hey that black spot above your nose doesn't look right either.

Okay I know your next complaint, Windows 8... well it is not too bad. You will get used to it. Learn a few gestures and with good trackpad you will have the honor of educating your friends on how to use windows 8 and start convincing them to drop their iProducts and make a switch (as if they will ever!! after all they earn for apple).

Battery life is what everybody said. And I am comfortable with that. The only complain is that to replace it is a pain when time comes. Good news is that replacing battery yourself will not void the warranty. Does it matter if it wasn't covered? Hell no. Because you will most probably be replacing the battery after warranty expires in one year. If you buy additional warranty, check if they will cover battery replacement or you may end up losing your warranty. You have been warned!!!

On warranty side, A three year warranty on this thing will probably cost you about $200 with ADP. So once you pay $200 and anything happens you get back $799. But that means you effectively netted $599 to get a replacement. So save your money ($200) because after two year you will want to buy a new laptop anyway. Hey Haswell is just around the corner. Isn't it?

For those brave souls who want to install Virtual Machine. The key to get to BIOS is F2. (to save yourself time to search). If you are unable to get to BIOS after repeated shutdown and pressing F2 then you are probably just resuming windows not restarting. Use the restart option of windows 8 and then press F2 and enable Virtualization in BIOS and you will be good to go.

**UPDATE 2/1/2013 **

Spilled some coffee on the laptop. But was quick in drying it out so didn't encounter any issues. The key felt sticky for next two days but became fluid again.

The keyboard feels fine now..that I am getting used to it. So folks .. it takes some time but you will eventually forget about it.

The screen still feels very good... I work with about 30% brightness and still think it is very bright.

I bought this laptop for my wife about a month ago to replace her slower than turtle less than one year old Dell laptop. I took a gamble on buying a laptop from Vizio as they are new to laptop manufacturing but after hours and hours of research I am happy to say if has been a great purchase. I should note that I did not buy it here but from another

online seller for 100 less. After reading reviews here which have been very helpful I went to Vizio's website and updated the touchpad drivers and the wi-fi drivers. Big improvement. I also made some adjustments to the two finger scrolling in the settings and works very much like my Macbook pro now.

My wife was very hesitant about it because of the windows 8 thing but after about 2 days she is really liking it. The keys on the keyboard are fantastic with great feedback and proper spacing. The touchpad is great size and works like a charm once the drivers are updated. I think I totally blew my wife away when I turned it on and it was ready to use in 2 seconds or less for real. It makes my Macbook pro look really slow. I am kind of embarrassed now. I use to brag about how fast my Macbook starts up but Wow I can't even begin to start mine up in 2 seconds or less and that is from either a total shutdown or waking from standby.

I also noticed how much faster this laptop is on the internet than any other computer I have seen. So I guess internet speed is also related to the computers performance after all. I will say that I have been anti Microsoft for many years and still am but my wife loves Microsoft windows so that is why I bought this for her. I also have to admit that this Vizio laptop is really making me rethink Microsoft windows again. It is a combination of the huge screen size, extremely thin size, blazing fast speed, battery life and on that is making me think about buying one for myself and maybe try to install mac OS on it.

Ok now onto the battery life. We have been experiencing about 4.5 hrs continuous use with preset screen brightness which is very bright by the way. Onto the screen now. The screen is very clean, clear, and bright. I am really glad they have chosen the matt finish and not the gloss. Another great thing I have noticed is that the laptop stays very cool even after hours of use for work or play. If you listen really closely in a very quite setting you can faintly here a soft whisper from the fan.

The aluminum chassis is fantastic and built just like an Apple. Very ridged and overall construction quality resembles a Macbook Air. I really hope that it holds up as well too.

If I had to have a gripe then it would be the lack of a SD card slot. Yes you can just use an USB adapter that accepts SD cards so no big deal. All I can say is that after many hours of research I choose this laptop for my wife and she loves me for it. Oh I should also mention that I considered The Acer Ultrabook, the Sony T series, and Samsung but in the end this one was a hands down for me. I would certainly recommend this to anyone serious about a performance Ultrabook.

Pros: Extremely thin and light. Might be the thinest for a 15.6 size screen?

This is one of the best laptops I've ever purchased, and I've gone through plenty. The combo of Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel's i3 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM make for a fast and smooth functioning PC. Battery life is on par with other laptops. The LED display is very nice and for a 15.6" screen, it's lighter than I expected. Looks great, I like the slim form factor makes it similar to a Macbook in that regard! A+ for Dell on this laptop.

Just a caution about purchasing a USED Dell Laptop. Dell has become very demanding about transferring ownership. Probably for several reasons they now require the name, address and purchase order number OF THE ORIGINAL purchaser before they will transfer ownership.

Why should the prospective buyer care? Simply because without transferring ownership, the new owner may not be able to get the computer serviced. Often newer used computers have a warranty remaining. That is a VALUABLE portion of the purchase price.

My suggestion is get a written statement from the person you are buying from that they are the ORIGINAL owner. Ask them to send the service tag number in that e-mail. Ask them to assure you that they will help with the transfer. Ask them to agree to take the computer back for a full refund if Dell refuses to transfer ownership. Then, as soon as the computer arrives, go to the Dell website and attempt to transfer ownership. If Dell will not transfer ownership, you may want to consider returning the item.

If you don't care about being the actual owner of record of the computer, then please ignore the above.

This is not written specifically concerning used laptops listed on Amazon or anywhere else. This is a general statement of caution.

I own one of these, bought it NEW and after 6 months, I had to warranty it out through Dell because the HD crashed on it and had to be replaced. Mind you, I use this for business only, so I never download anything onto it & use it for E-mail, surfing the web for information and FB. Now my keypad types words in that I did not press & it is overheating so it is again going to Dell for another Warranty Repair. I called Dell and purchased another warranty before mine expired because you can not trust this Laptop. One of my acquaintances has the same Laptop and has had the same exact issues and has also had to have them repaired.

The space by where the mouse is, is silver and gets very hot, my fans are not working right & that is causing overheating according to Dell. This is the biggest pile of junk I have ever owned and as soon as my warranty is up again, I am not paying another $110.00 I am buying a Acer or HP. SAVE THE HEADACHE & BUY ANOTHER BRAND!!!!

I had been looking for some time for a good deal on a below $450 laptop running Windows 7 (not because I like running Windows, it is just outside my budget to purchase a Linux machine also). I always prefer Dell because of the quality and the excellent technical support (just try to get an HP computer repaired under warranty) but was having trouble breaking that $400 line. When I saw this M501R laptop offered for $369, I ordered it very quickly, just doing a quick scan of its capabilities and reputation on the net. 4 GB RAM, dual core processor (don't mind this moderately powerful AMD chip since I am not doing video processing or the like on this machine), 500 GB HD (5400 RPM is slow, but for Internet and document, photo processing it is fine), CD/DVD read and write (don't usually see this included on a below $400 machine), big (15.6 inch) screen with fairly nice resolution (hey, what do you want for this price)---not quite as precise display as the higher priced dispalys but my wife likes it fine for TV and movies anyway, Windows 7 Home Supreme (whatever---no one sells lower than "Supreme") keeps you in the MS monopoly plot for now, though I do recommend using OfficeLibre (used to be Open Office---free superior equivalent to Microsoft Office handles all document processing needs and is compatible with MS) as I did to avoid purchasing overprices MS stuff, and GIMP if you are an Adobe Photoshop user but don't have a spare grand lying around. Good audio---run the output into a laptop stereo stand. Windows Live Movie Maker is a plus with Windows 7, giving you pretty nice YouTube video production capability. Don't need an email application since GMAIL and HOTMAIL have great web interfaces. Jump on this!

I thougt the low price and the fact that it had Windows 7 made it worth the risk of buying. Never again. With this computer, I have to be very careful when typing a message, even as I'm doing now, because the cursor jumps around to another spot in the message. And frequently, I mean very frequently, I had to troubleshoot to get it to connect to the internet when other wifi devices in the house worked just fine. Annoying. Also no number keys pad, but I could have lived with that. I rarely write negative reviews, but this was a very poor choice on my part. I'm going to save up and get a good one next time.

Update: The company has been very prompt in responding, and has said they would accept a return with a restocking fee (which is perfectly understandable since I'm sure they have to go into the computer to make sure you have deleted all your personal stuff, etc.). So the company seems wonderful, but not this particular laptop.

My 94 year old mother needed a new computer! Her ten plus year old XP desktop gave up the ghost and she thought a laptop would be a good idea!

I shopped around for a Windows 7 OS because I wasn't sure how she would handle the look and feel of Windows 8. She now has her email, solitaire and internet back, and is quite happy with the laptop.
