After shopping around what seemed like the entire internet, I came upon this laptop. I only had 500 dollars to spend, so I wanted to make the best possible decision. After inter comparing every feature and taking into account the reputation of the makers, I narrowed my choices down to one or two laptops, and eventually chose this one due to the price. I'm quite satisfied with it. The only thing I didn't like was windows 8, but with some modification and programs, I customized even that to my liking. Overall, this is a no frills laptop with excellent performance for the price.

Why is it cheaper than other laptops? It is because of all the bloatware it has; however, they can be uninstalled. It is a great at home office laptop with sold performance with 5 hour battery on battery saving mode. The accurate keyboard is great and smooth. I've had this laptop for a month now and I'm still a happy consumer!

I purchased this laptop two days ago at Staples after returning another brand that I probably shouldn't have bought in the first place. I've always choose to buy HP because I'm comfortable with the functionality of the brand. This however is a step up from my 15.4" that I use on occasion. There's lots to love about this machine like the price for starters and the keyboard is very nicely designed and user friendly if you're not accustom to braille keys.

Obviously no machine is perfectly made, so here's a few of my pros and cons about the G7.

Pros: Beautiful 17.3" screen, the color literally jumps off the screen which makes watching movies and videos a blast.

Cons: If you're use to having the option of managing your touch pad from the keyboard section, be advised that this model doesn't have that option. The only way to do so would be through Device Manager. And oh there's a little circle thing on the touch pad, if you press it the touch pad is disabled but very pointless since you can't hold it and type.

Pros: I like to listen to music while working out, so it was very important to have something that didn't muffle when turned up to a high decibel which this machine definitely doesn't do. It's clear and clean and very easy to hear.

Overall as I said before this is a wonderful machine and a great buy. Couldn't ask for anything better for the price. Recommend to all those that are in the market for a great item.

After owning this laptop for a couple of months now, I feel safe in saying that this is an excellent computer that I am glad that I have. The price of this computer is another key aspect that makes this computer such an excellent deal. I have long been a user of HP computers; therefore, I think that I'm fairly qualified to attest to their reliability. If they were not reliable, I would not continue to purchase them.

Now to the HP g7 specifically. One of the first things to catch my eye, besides the price, was the Intel Core i3 CPU. I had always owned HP's with AMD processors as they seemed to be a little more affordable; however, this laptop had the same affordable price with an Intel processor. This interested me greatly as I had always heard of Intel's great reputation for their fine processors. Plus this processor is rated at around 2.5 GHz while most of my AMD's on laptops had been just below 2.0 GHz. So, I admit that I had phenomenal expectations for the speed and power of this computer. I'm sad to report that those expectations were not met by the Intel Core i3. This is only one of the negatives that I must state. To be fair though, it was a matter of expectations and not actual performance. The Intel processor does a fine job of handling any tasks that I throw it's way, I guess I was expecting a little more from Intel based on their reputation. So it is now my experience that the AMD processors are extremely comparable to the Intel processors in the HP's that I have owned. I guess that I should have known that since I have always had really good performance from my AMD processors. I say all of this to give an open and honest view of my experience with this computer. I say all of this not too necessarily sway anyone away from this laptop, but I say this in case others have heard of the Intel reputation over AMD's. Regarding this matter, I will restate that this processor has taken everything that I have thrown at it. An example of this is that I have on more than one occasion had image manipulation programs open along with Firefox 4.0 with about a dozen tabs open with graphic websites with Windows file handling programs open along with other media (iTunes) playing all at the same time. The Intel processor and 4 GBs of RAM handled all of this just fine.

Speaking of some of these other specs, the 4GBs of RAM is nice at this price range in my opinion. I also like the 500GBs Hard Drive. That is plenty of room even for someone like me who downloads lots of Amazon mp3s and takes and stores lots of pictures. I have found the Bluetooth feature to be useful with my smartphone. It is also my opinion that the screen really pops. It is a good size screen for a laptop with really good color in my opinion. Also in my opinion, the specs and feature set are really nice for this price range.

If you have not had Windows 7 yet, I have found it to be stable. Admittedly, I don't see too much difference from Vista. I am glad to have the latest version of Windows for all of the latest drivers and such. Just an FYI, Windows 7 is now up to SP 1. I'm not sure if that will be pre-installed on the computer or if you will have to download it. The laptop does have the Home Premium version of Windows 7. I consider this a must as the Home Premium comes ready for networking and much media usage in addition to the standards of Windows.

Lastly, this has been a solid performer for me in the couple of months that I have owned it. I have been really pleased with the price point. Since this laptop can be found at different price ranges, I'd like to share the price range I'm talking about. When I purchased my laptop from a retail outlet on sale, it was $550 and $600 after taxes. So basically I am talking about this laptop being in a nice price range around $600 and under as it is currently advertised with Amazon. In summary, I really like this laptop with the only disappointment being that the Intel did not live up to all the hype as I expected it to be incredibly better than the AMD's. Be that as it may, this laptop with the Intel processor performs just as well as other AMD's that I've owned. With all of that said, I find this laptop to be an excellent computer for the price range.

I had a Dell Latitude D610 from college that just died a couple of months ago after 6 years. I spent two weeks researching different laptops and eventually settled for the HP G72-B66US 17.3" Laptop until I went to a local store and found out the last one was sold! The sales rep suggested this 2011 model, which has very similar specs and replaces the 2010 HP G72-B66US 17.3" Laptop. I was skeptical about making the purchase, especially since this was not part of my research.

However, not only was it cheaper than the previous model, but it's also a huge improvement from the 2010 model. How so? The touch pad is not hard to use: the clicks are easy to push down, scrolling is easy with two fingers, and you can zoom in or out. I had always used a mouse b/c I'm not a huge touchpad fan, but this touchpad is great. The exterior has a nice glossy finish vs. the 2010 model which looked like a cheap plastic exterior. Everything else seems to be just like the way the 2010 model is described.

The only con is a relatively short battery life (2.5-3 hours), but compared to my old laptop where the battery lasted under an hour this is great! The fan is on the side of the computer, so you don't have to worry about your lap burning or that you'll get cancer down there (lol). This laptop is quiet and starts up easily and quickly.

Considering how big this laptop is, 6 pounds feels like nothing. It's lighter than smaller models that are a few years older. Speakers are average in quality, but can be turned up loud! And for laptops speakers, they are pretty good. Overall, I'm very happy with this model and would recommend it to someone who likes movies, youtube, sports, photography, some gaming, music, recording software, business organization, etc.

Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

This is a good, solid machine.

The title of this review is also the reason why I took a star off, because F9 hasn't been the norm for BIOS settings to change the order of boot devices. A little label on the keyboard would be helpful. I just went through all the function keys to find this out (not even Google was helpful!--But now it will be :).

When the machine starts, press F9 and you can choose to boot from a CD if you like.

This machine doesn't come with much clutter, unless you think MS Office is one.

Initial battery life never impresses me, let's see how well it will stick to its multiple-hour promise a year from today. Battery is a problem for all computers. We need more technological advancement in this area.

Price is great for the performance. I don't think you can go wrong with this purchase.

Enjoy!

I purchase computers for my company. I've purchased several laptops under $1,000, from Lenovo to Toshiba, from Sony to HPs and Dells. This is one of the best. Nice, sturdy keyboard (for its price range), decently quiet, good feel, snappy, overall a pleasure to use. Sure it's not a high-end Lenovo T series, or an Appple Macbook Pro, but it's well worth its price. Recommended.

I purchased this laptop two years ago and it has been running great ever since. The Lenovo R400 is designed for durability, and performance. It is a great choice for programmers, and professionals who need an affordable laptop to get their work done. I mostly use my laptop for school work, writing, editing and this laptop goes above and beyond.

The touchpad is large, responsive and comfortable to use. I have also used it for CPU resource-intensive programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Dreamweaver. The sound quality is excellent and I haven't had any problems with it. The most amazing thing about this laptop is its spill-proof keyboard which drains liquids away from the internal components. I have twice accidentally spilled coca-cola and the laptop has survived beautifully. My Thinkpad R400 has endured its fair share of knocks and rough treatment without coming to any harm so for that I give this laptop a 5/5.

The only thing that I can consider a disadvantage of the Thinkpad R400 is that it's quite heavy and can get annoying to cary in places. It has a nice CPU (Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz) which can handle pretty much everything you throw at it including some light games. It also has enough ram (4GB) which is more than enough these days for intensive applications. My laptop came with a 160GB HDD but I have upgraded it to a Samsung 830 128GB SSD and it flies like the wind. It also has a nice DVD burner which I use quite a lot. The battery is decent, not the best but it gets the job done. For me it lasts around 2hrs with half brightness. I'm still using this laptop and it has never slowed down.

I bought this computer to replace an Hp laptop that I had been using for about 4 years since I will need one capable of handling CAD. I have only had this one a few weeks, but so far I have been extremely pleased.

-The screen resolution is great, the image is extremely bright and crisp.

-The keyboard feels great

-The computer is quiet

-The speakers are good for enjoying a movie, just don't expect high performance bose speakers that you can drown out a crowd with. Though, when using beats by dre headphones, the sound is amazing. Amazing.

The simplepass feature is pretty cool. It allows you to use a fingerprint from each finger to launch various apps. For ex, my index finger can launch all my emails while my middle finger may launch various game. Sometimes, it takes a few tries for the reader to get my fingerprint, but overall its pretty impressive.

-I don't enjoy the physical size of the battery. The battery is not flush with the back of the computer, and causes the computer to be elevated about 3/4 inch. Just as expected though, the battery life is fantastic.

-The 3rd generation i5 processor with 8GB Ram is extremely fast.

-The touchpad is nice and big. You can use two fingers to scroll as well as zoom etc like you would on a smartphone.

So far, I love it. It is sleek, the brushed aluminum is quite beautiful, and it performs just as well, if not better, than I hoped.

This thing is awesome. The top and keyboard area is made of aluminum, which gives it a great feel. It has a light up HP logo on the back. Its very fast. The battery life is about 9 hours not 12.25 like it says in the description but its still pretty long. The beatsaudio is very very loud and clear, it rivals my TV. The finger print scanner is convenient. You can program a certain webpage to open up by a certain finger. Honestly I would rather have this then an apple.

The HP Pavilion dv7-7020us, 17.3" laptop is a truly amazing computer. This is the first laptop I have ever bought or owned for that matter. Before, I just ordered the parts and built my own desk top PC. I am very pleasantly surprised with this machine, I haven't had it long, but the only down thing, and it is very minor, is that the location pips on the keyboard letters (F and J) should be just a bit more pronounced. Excellent computer.

My first day working on the NP355E5C and it's not as slow as I feared it would be. It has a low end AMD processor so I was worried it would be annoyingly slow to use. So far I've installed Windows updates and ClassicShell to make Windows 8 usable and performance has been ok.

The 5400rpm 500GB Hitachi hard drive with 8MB cache is a pretty standard part for inexpensive laptops and it's kinda slow. If this was my daily use computer I'd be tempted to upgrade it to an SSD drive.

I was surprised such an inexpensive PC has Realtek gigabit for wired ethernet and it has bluetooth in addition to two USB 3 ports and two USB 2 ports. That's better connectivity options than other low end laptops.

The screen is bright and clear. I'm not a touch typist but the keyboard is working well for me.

The trackpad has frequently quit tracking my finger until I lift off and put my finger back down. I've not found any setting in the control panel that helps.

Update 04mar13: I'd hoped I could find a way to add Windows7 but this laptop uses "Secure Boot" making it difficult and expensive to get Windows 7 installed. It looks like I would have to turn off Secure Boot then reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows7 from scratch with a retail Win 7 disk. It appears I would then loose the ability to use the provided Windows8 installation. Think I'm stuck with Win8. I'm using Classic Shell to help make Win8 more usable. That makes it pretty much like Win7 but still a little weird. On the upside, every program and tweak I use in Win7 is working in Win8 so that's cool.

I'm still having the problem where the trackpad stops responding until I lift my finger. I'm getting used to doing that but I hope someday a driver update will help with that issue.

Update 08jul13: Downgraded from 4 stars to 1 star. I've given up on this thing. The trackpad has never tracked right. I tried driver updates & setting changes but cannot get it to work smoothly. I have to use a mouse. Then one day the screen went solid white then solid black. I could only see the desktop when I plugged in an external monitor. I called Samsung and set up a warranty service return to get the screen fixed but after a few days and many reboots the screen started working again so I had to cancel the return. The screen has worked perfectly ever since but I no longer trust this laptop to be reliable for travel. This past week I noticed the CPU is always working at half speed, .8GHz instead of 1.7GHz. Turns out the power plan keeps reverting to the Power Saver plan after I set it to the Performance plan. I can't find a way to get the Performance power plan setting to stick.

I like Samsung, they make a lot of price/performance winning stuff. I wanted to like this laptop, but with the poorly performing trackpad, the unreliable screen, & the CPU speed issue, this laptop is just too frustrating.

UPDATE September 2013:

I've now sent this thing in for repair three times. First for blank screen, erratic trackpad, and camera not working. They fixed the screen and sent it back with the camera & trackpad problems. So I sent it in a second time and again they fixed only one problem, the camera, and sent it back to me. Now its in for service a third time and hopefully they'll fix the trackpad this time.

They are fixing the problems but its been a slow frustrating experience.

I do not know about the QC of Lenovo; Has the Quality declined after removing the IBM Name? I can understand that nothing is perfect and that when some item has a flaw, it is a single flaw and not THREE:

1The WI-FI was not working on the initial install as it was missing a driver.

2The Touch Pad was not working even after installing the correct driver from the internet The Sales person was more than helpful , yet even after he sent me the original recovery CD's; The TouchPad and the finger print did not work despite the wi-fi controller finally worked.

3The finger print reader is not working as of now.

I've had this laptop for a week and so far it's great. The screen is big and beautiful. It is huge but it's supposed to be. It's a desktop replacement. It also runs very quiet compared to other laptops I have. And there is a space for an additional hard drive. That is a HUGE bonus, and wasn't mentioned anywhere when I bought it. Stylewise is looks great too, especially the big speakers on top. The touchpad is very sensitive, and works much better than on other laptops I've seen, once you get used to it.

The only real issue I had with it was the spacebar. If you didn't tap it right in the center, it wouldn't make a space. It was driving me nuts when typing. But I pried out the spacebar, put a small piece of foam underneath to force the button underneath down a little farther, and it worked like a charm. Now I barely touch the spacebar anywhere on it to make a space. It works perfectly.

It is powerful and fast, but has some issues. I had an ASUS G74 series that was a powerhouse, but had no provisions for firewire, so I sold it and bought this Fujitsu. The computer works ok, except the Nvidia graphics card fails on a regular basis. I've only had the computer about a month and it has been doing that since I took it out of the box. The GPU failure causes whatever program you're working in to shut down. All drivres are current, it's just a defect. Maybe I just got a bad one.

I also miss the illuminated keyboard on my Asus.

Other than that it's a good computer.

I purchased this laptop for a family member who wanted a computer for word processing, web surfing, and very light online gaming (no heavy graphics). So far, this has been perfect for her. Like the other Toshiba notebook models I've tried, the keyboard feel wasn't to my personal preference, but she has no complaints.

We bought this laptop for a student & we LOVE it!! It is perfect for what we need it for. We got it for $299 at WalMart.com & the extended warranty too for $29.

I was a bit nervous about it because another reviewer complained about the volume, but we find the volume to be fine. It isn't going to shatter any windows, but it is perfectly fine for listening to music while computing, etc. I wouldn't turn up the volume to listen to music across a room, but like I said, it is great for listening to music, while surfing the net, etc. I will say I HATE WINDOWS 8 100%, but that is not a computer performance issue... that is an OS issue.

If you want to listen to loud music get some decent plug in speakers & there you go. For $300 you certainly can't expect so much. It is a basic laptop that serves it purpose well for those seeking champagne on a beer budget.

This is a great laptop for those on a tight budget... it has a good amount of RAM & a decent hard drive for the money... PLUS the hard drive can be expanded to increase capacity AND the RAM can be beefed up, which is a big plus in my book because we can update it before we need to replace it.

So far it is a WIN, WIN!! I will update down the road after we've had it for a while.

The material it's made of feels cheap to the touch. I have been using this laptop for a few weeks now without any issues, until the last two days. I have not added anything to the computer to cause it to be slow although the last two times i've tried starting it up it doesn't want to respond. The scroll feature on the mouse pad will randomly stop working as well as the key pad. Not a big fan of the windows 8 either.

This is a most excellent computer for basic needs: DVD movies, internet, email, document writing, simple software. It has the fastest warm-up time of any computer I have ever experienced. From pushing the power button, it was displaying the Start menu in 9 seconds. At 1 minute, 3 seconds, I was on amazon.com, ready to write this review. I highly recommend this laptop.

I needed to get a laptop to take with me before going on an out-of-state summer internship. I did not want a "desktop replacement" type laptop since I already have a very powerful gaming desktop here at home.

After much searching and deliberation, I decided to get the Asus UL80VT. My reasons were:

1) Asus reliability and reputation: I've always had good luck with Asus motherboards for the PCs Ive build for friends and several family members; plus Asus laptops are consistantly more reliable than other brands ([Amazon deleted the link I had here, go to your search engine of choice and look for "Asus laptop reliability" and see what I'm talking about])

2) Battery Life: claimed to be 11.5 hours. Real-world resutls are about 7-9 hours unplugged. This time is for light surfing and word processing, and allowing the Asus "Battery Saver" power profile to dim the screen, etc. You'll get much less times using discrete graphics, bright screen, DVD drive, etc.

3) Powerful, battery-sipping Intel Core2Duo U7300 1.3 GHz processor: this low-voltage processor is plenty powerful enough for everyday tasks, light gaming, watching HD online videos, etc. Asus is even kind enough to include a feature which automatically overclocks the processor when on AC power and your games demand extra "oomph"!

4) Came with Windows 7 pre-installed: Windows 7 is simply the best operating system Microsoft has ever made, period.

5) Size/weight perfect for me: I carry this laptop to class every day in a Case Logic ENS-14 14.1-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black) in my backpack. At 4.8 lbs (plus 0.8 lbs for the AC adapter = 5.6 lbs total), this is about the same weight as one of my textbooks, and infinitely more useful!

6)Chiclet keyboard: I love the spaced-out keys, great for typing, easy to adapt to from a full-size keyboard. (No full-size number pad, but that's to be expected in laptops this size. Get a 15.6" screen laptop if you need that)

7) Fit/Finish good for the price: I love the aluminum top of this laptop, much less smudgy than the black one. The screen bezel is still black on the inside, which does show fingerprints, but that area doesn't get touched very often.

7) Has an optical drive: I looked into 13.3" laptops, but they typically don't have DVD drives, which is a nice feature to have for watching movies on a plane trip, installing software, etc.

Drawbacks:

1) Glossy screen is very shiny, I have a custom screen protector for this I bought online at which cuts down on most of the glare too.

2) Right wrist rest sqeaks/clicks a little when you put your wrist on it. This is not very loud and I don't anticipate being a problem. I knew this was an issue with this model beforehand. Don't be surprised if it happens to you, although yours could be louder/squeak more, etc.

Other thoughts:

* Some people have complained about the track pad buttons being under one solid piece of plastic. This doesn't really bother me at all. It is not difficult to press the left or right side. The left 1/3 is the left click, the right 1/3 is the right click. Only the middle 1/3 of the plastic is unresponsive as it is solid underneath. I should note that I am using the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging], so to be honest, I am not using the trackpad very often.

*People have also complained about the stickers present on the inside of the laptop. These peel off easily and leave no residue, in my experience. Those are mostly put there so people who don't know any better can know what's inside their laptop.

*Finally, people have complained about the bloatware/junk software present installed on this computer. True, these programs are very annoying. But one could understand why a manufacturer would agree to install these trial programs and come-ons: higher profits. If you're so inclined, take 5 minutes to uninstall the stuff you don't want, this is not a difficult process.

* People ask what kind of computer this is all the time! Classmates/coworkers/friends who haven't seen Asus laptops (too many Dells and HP's out there!) will ask where you got this laptop :)

* I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus program, and have had 0 issues so far. I highly recommend it. (Free download)

Summary: Overall I would say the build quality of this Asus is about an 8.5/10. I still rate this as 5 stars though because the minor build quality issues are not enough to detract from the overall value of this fast, efficient, and powerful laptop.

Had this laptop for a week now and I am thoroughly impressed. I've installed a couple ASUS motherboards on desktops and was always really happy with their performance. This is the first ASUS laptop I've owned/used, and so far it has lived up to the standards I come to expect from them.

I love the 14" screen size/overall laptop size, fast CPU/RAM speed, switchable graphics (very cool, helps conserve quite a bit of battery when unplugged, but still has some muscle to game when needed.) Battery life is amazing for this computer's size and power, I'm getting 8-9 hours with average surfing. Also, I am so far liking Windows 7, after trying Vista and absolutely hating it, it seems like they got it right this time.

Cons seriously take these with a grain of salt, I didn't rate the laptop 5 stars for nothing. The touchpad takes a little getting used to, it's a bit sticky at first but once you get some skin oil on there it works fine. I have had no trouble with the multitouch features others have complained about, in fact it's a pretty cool feature of this touchpad. The mouse button on the touch pad does suck, it's a one-piece, rocker button and it squeaks when I press it (BTW other than that squeak issue on the touchpad, it seems that ASUS has really improved their build quality from previous reviews, I have noticed no other poor build quality-related issues with this laptop.) The LCD screen quality is definitely lacking, the reflections can get bad when you've got a backlight behind you and the poor black contrast makes it look a bit washed out when compared to other LCDs. Finally, the speakers are pretty terrible, but hey, they work which is an infinite improvement from my old laptop...

Overall, excellent laptop. If you are looking for the perfect mix of power and portability, you've found it.

I based my purchase off all the good reviews I read about the system. Now, I've had it for 8 months, and have had problems for at least 6 months. Many of the ASUS start-up files crash at system start up. Creating a recovery CD will cause a crash too. Also, system restore attempts often fail. I wish I'd read about all this 8 months ago.

The best part about this laptop is that there is dual operating system built-in where there's a Windows based system button and a Linux based button, so when the windows system crashed (daily) I could still check my email in the reliable Linux system. There was a period of time when I just didn't power down at all to avoid the startup issues.

Another good thing is if you call customer service you won't wait 30 minutes to talk to a person. They're good about that. Now, whether they actually fix your problem is an issue that remains to be seen in my case.

The touchpad and keyboard design has been a big problem as well. Even when I'm typing very carefully the mouse will jump around to other text boxes. This is a big problem when filling out any kind of form on the internet as well as typing a Word document. I've opted for a external mouse and have disabled the touchpad altogether.

I don't believe today's laptops are made to last, but I do think you can find a better one that will work as expected for a reasonable amount of time. I would not choose this model/brand again.

****UPDATE*****

I sent this laptop back within the 1-year warranty to be repaired by ASUS. It worked normally for 1/2 a day, and went right back to the previous issues of crashing. I truly believe their fix was merely to re-format the computer only. I could have done that myself. I declined to send it back again because I do not believe they'll resolve the issue nor do I have the time. ASUS has not updated ANY of the drivers the computer needs to function properly. I guess ASUS ripped me off. $700 out of my pockets for a bad product.

Honest reviews on ASUS UL80Vt- A2 14-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Silver)

This is the third ASUS we've added to our stable and am very happy with what we've received from the company. You get a very high quality laptop without paying the premium that others charge.

a) Build Quality 10/10 -was very nervous about the build quality given some of the previous reviews. ASUS LISTENED. This is better than the Sony VAIO (bought less than a year ago) that we just recycled, the Dell I have from work and the HP that we bought a few months ago. Everything is tight.

b) Keyboard 9/10 -I actually care about how the keyboard feels when typing as I learned how to type of a manual, then selectric many years ago. This keyboard is almost on par with what you can get from Lenovo. And, no, there is no flex that I can feel at this point. I save 10/10 for Lenovo

c) Screen 10/10 -One of the most clear screens that I've seen. Have watched HD movies and also have manipulated images using Adobe Photoshop. Cannot be beat.

d) Video Card 9/10 -Hybrid Nvidia/Intel MHD is awesome. Cutting to the intel chip with battery is seamless and you really cannot tell that you're in powersaving mode. Only reason why not a 10/10 is because the Nvidia chip only has 512Meg on the GBU... Should be 1 Gig.

e) Case -10/10 -as stated in build quality... this looks awesome. Had to really work to figure out which panel was aluminum and which was plastic.

f) Hard Drive -5/10. I was a bit surprised that the HDD was only a 5400 rpm drive. I immediately created an image, replaced with a 7200 rpm drive and reloaded. I have found the 7200 doesn't seem to hurt battery life and does improve performance a bit. Given the prices of HDD's today, there should be no reason for not having a 7200 rpm.

g) RAM -DDR3. Need I say more?

h) CPU -Intel. Need I say more?

i) Battery life 10/10. I have done quite a bit with numerous laptops to try to extend battery life. I don't like having to drag around power cords when visiting clients. I am able to get almost 8 hours in battery saving mode.

j) Bloatware -ASUS seems to be increasing the amount of bloatware they install on their laptops. I just unloaded everything that said ASUS and the laptop still works very well... Some of the 'smart keys' don't work, but that doesn't bother me. The trade off between quick boots and flicking keys to change power modes is worth it to me.

I wouldn't look much further if you're looking for a laptop that can be lugged around all day. The secret for a 14" screen is the laptop isn't much bigger than a 13.3" case, but feels as if you're looking at a much larger screen.

I received my silver asus ul80vt laptop today, and I absolutely love it! This is my first review, but I thought it was necessary because it was such a great deal! In the price range, (I bought it for around $750) this was top of the line. The battery life is incredible, it was delivered in excellent condition, and best of all it's lightweight! The screen is, in my opinion, of great quality. The viewing angles are not nearly as bad as some of the reviews I read, and the color is awesome! Also, it's the perfect size. It's small, but big enough so that you don't have to squint! It's about the size of a hard back textbook, but much thinner. The processor is great, and the hard drive is adequate. Internet connection works great, and the camera is a lot better quality than I was expecting. I was expecting to have trouble with the trackpad, but so far it seems normal to me. The only thing I noticed is that I tend to move the mouse with the base of my hand while typing on occasion, but that's nothing major. I have heard that asus makes the motherboards for mac computers, and while I considered splurging for a macbook pro, I couldn't justify the cost difference. I could buy TWO of these for the price of a mac and it has more features!

I've had this Laptop for a week now and I love it more everyday. I was very surprised at just how fast it is. I'm the type of person that tries to do 10 things at once and I love that I can have 10 different pages open going back and forth and the Laptop zooms right alone with me. A Hugh plus in my book is the number pad, when your use to a desktop keyboard and start using a Laptop it is a wonderful feature. To be completely fair there is one flaw the built in speaker is very low, but if you use headphones it has a great sound. So, for the money this is a GREAT Laptop. I still can't believe all is has to offer for such a low price.

I got this LT at a very good price. It looks nice and has a great keyboard, but the touchpad will require "tweak to touch and taste", it has a lot of adjustment options. I was able to adjust mine for great response. This unit is fast enough for everything I've tried so far. It looks good and feels well built. However it has some surprising omissions, namely no webcam, no bluetooth, and only two USB ports! Each of these items of themselves are surprising, but all three?? This is practically unheard of these days. Also be aware that both memory slots contain 1 GB each which means you would need to get a 2 GB memory module in order to upgrade to 3 GB, etc. This unit is also somewhat noisy at times, and gets quite warm in operation. However if these items are not a problem for you then you should be quite pleased with this LT.

The good: 1. Very low price. During the Holidays you should be able to buy this model under $300.

2.Very clear display in a wide screen format (not always the best for web)

3. User user friendly keyboard separate number pad.

4. Good battery life. (3 hrs+)

5. Wireless-N Wi-Fi standard.

The bad: 1. Very basic model with no bells & whistles. Only 2 usb ports, no web cam, only basic (read poor) laptop sound & speakers. Lacks dedicated short cut keys.

2. Ships with 2 1-GB memory sticks. Really the minimum for Win7. $60-65 to upgrade to 4GB.

3. Mouse pad is a little quirky to setup. (I use a usb mouse so no problem EXCEPT only 2 usb ports)

4. Single-core Intel Celeron processor is just barely fast enough for Win7. Just web browsing & basic tasks can easily bring CPU to 100% usage.

5. Mine shipped with Win7 Home 64 bit. You may find that Win7 64 bit is not easily compatible with some older software. Itunes was a pain to install in 64 bit version.

Overall for the price (I paid $259 & have seen it for less on Black Friday) the Toshiba is a pleasant surprise and a decent value. If you're paying much over $320-350 I'd shop around.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C655-S5049 15.6" Laptop (Intel Celeron Processor

I got this on sale at Office Depot for $400 yesterday. It works ok so far except for a few minor things. If you notice, a lot of recent laptops stopped using keys with beveled edges. The new ones are mostly flat and not as easy to type with. I think it's to cut costs. The mouse on this computer seems to be a little goofy. It will not let you keep two fingers on the mouse at the same time, it will freeze the mouse. Also the mouse seems to pause a lot and the arrow sometimes disappears for a few seconds. Also the mouse pad is offset from the center of the computer to the left side of the computer so you have to reach over with the right hand to use it. That's a little uncomfortable. I can't figure any reason why they did that. They've lowered the height of the screen by an inch so the new format is wider than previously. That again is a puzzlement to me because webpages are typically taller and narrower. But all the newer computers are doing it. It's too bad that the designers can't resist changing things all the time. My previous computer was a Compaq F700. Except for the annoying Vista, that was a great computer with a really good mouse in the right place and a comfortable screen size.

I purchased this Toshiba C655-S5082 back in Nov 2010. I was at work during the day and wanted this for my GF at the time so she wouldn't get bored and could surf the net while I was away. She ran off with Satan, but the laptop stays and I'm happy that I bought it.

I will get to the cons first...

1. The speakers suck they simply aren't loud enough. I plugged in some speakers I kept from my old desktop PC and it's perfect. I can hear sound :)If you take your laptop with you often I would suggest buying some micro USB speakers to accommodate this model. Or buy a different model.

2. The pad you scroll the mouse with could be better. It's a little sloppy and not precise like many notebooks. If you use your notebook alot it might drive you a bit nuts after awhile playing line up the arrow to the destination you want to go. I bought a Logitech wireless mouse and love it, it works great with the C655-S5082.

3. 2 Gigs of memory isn't really that terrific now a days. I would bump it up to 4 gigs which is the maximum amount of memory this lappy will do. 4 gigs is plenty. Go find yourself a stick of DDR3 2gig memory. I think I paid like $25 for mine a year ago. Just look around you will find it probably for even cheaper.

Now the Pros....

Intel Celeron processor, sure it's not a Pentium but it's still an intel chip. A year or two down the road when you go to sell this if you decide to. it being " INTEL " will keep it's value up some over an AMD chip. Not saying Intel make a better chip than AMD by any means. Both pretty equal just one has better resale value or appeal. The Celeron being a cheaper processor works out good for the initial buyer.

$299 :) Any way you look at it this is a kick ass deal. I love Toshiba, in my opinion they make the best notebook computer in the business. I have owned a couple Toshiba Satellites over the years and they have impressed.

The screen is excellent > very vivid and with great color. Toshiba have some of the best displays for LCD technology LED, they are the makers. In fact they make some of the highest resolution screens for Smartphones too. The screen quality goes pretty far with me. I know all computers and notebooks are High def, so none will look bad. Toshiba just have screens down better than anyone overall on the computer side. Toshiba make an excellent television set as well. Can you tell I love Toshiba lol.

I chose this as a very solid system (processor, memory, hard drive) for its price, not as the lightest or coolest. It fits that very well and works well as a general utility system (ie, NOT a gaming system). With all that said, it is fairly light with the downside that it FEELS light.... not sure if this would work well carrying it every day, not sure how it'd hold up. I would also like to point out that "Blue Brushed Aluminum" refers to the color and pattern. The shell is, as expected, plastic painted as "Blue Brushed Aluminum" with the "Blue Brushed Aluminum" scratching off pretty easily. Great for sitting on a disk or use around the house, but certainly doesn't live up to me expectation of durability that the Satellite line used to have.

I have been using this laptop for over a month now, and so far I really like it. It's very fast, has a nice look, and the screen is the perfect size. I only wish the battery life was longer, had back-lit keys, and didn't heat up so quickly. A laptop fan is a must!

Did not actually receive an S5166. I received an S5373, which by all research is a year older model. It performs well but it seems I should have at least gotten a reply from the retailer when I sent him notification of this minor detail. Other than that the computer has worked for everything we needed it to.
