This is the fifth laptop I've ever had (in the past 10 years) and it's definitely the best one. First of all, it's very lightweight: 3.8 lb with battery (the battery is built-in). The design is something between Macbook Air and Macbook Pro but without those horrible sharp edges, which you could even use to slice bread! Although it's a sleekbook, it comes with all the ports you need: you get three USB 3.0, one Ethernet port, one card reader, and finally one HDMI (I never liked that Thunderbolt port in Macbook Air and some Dell ultrabooks since they are not compatible with most TVs and projectors).

I compared the screen picture quality with Dell XP 13 Ultrabook and Macbook Air 13: it's much better than Dell XPS but slightly worse than Macbook Air (it seems that Apple laptops still have the best screens in the market). By the way, remember that this is 14" (not 14.3" or 14.6") so don't expect the screen to be very larger than Macbook Air 13.3" screen. The keyboard and touchpad are simply as awesome as Macbook's.

One great thing about this laptop is that (unlike both Dell XPS 13 and Macbook Air 13) it doesn't get very hot. This is probably because it comes with a 4th generation Intel CPU, which is designed to be very energy efficient (this is an energy-star laptop).

Another great thing is the sound quality, which is much better than all laptops I've ever had. However, I haven't been able to hear much bass from the beatsaudio subwoofer. Not sure if the bass comes from the speakers or the subwoofer.

This is a 4G-enabled laptop, which has a SIM slot and comes with a T-Mobile SIM card. A few notes about the 2-year free 4G:

1. The laptop supports HSPA+ connection, which is also called 4G and differs from 4G LTE. You get at most around 5Mbps download speed with HSPA+ and more than 15Mbps with 4G LTE.

2. You get only 200MB of free 4G internet per month and once you reach this limit, you won't be able to use the mobile internet unless you wait for the next month to get 200MB more or buy data from T-Mobile (1GB for $25, 3.5GB for $35, 5GB for $50). If you don't charge your account you won't get even a 2G internet. A a regular user, you probably need at least 1GB of data so plan for at least $25/month if you want to use this mobile internet capability.

The only problem I had with this laptop was that the WiFi connection used to disconnect frequently. However, the good news is that this is a driver issue and you can fix it by simply updating your Intel Centrino 2230 driver to the version 16.1.5 recently released by Intel (see the link at the bottom of this review).

If you are a Windows user, this is probably one of the best lightweight laptops in the market. My actual star rating of this laptop is 4.5 (Amazon doesn't support start fractions!)

Update 1: You can read the below first but I do have something to add. When I first called Tampa Laptops, I asked about the BIOS because I was having a hard time restoring and was told that there really was no need to update BIOS. The laptop was shipped with BIOS version A09 and the current versions are A17 and A18. I have been having issues with the memory giving errors in diagnostic tests therefore the performance was not so good. I read every BIOS revision and one of them dealt with the way the DELL recognizes memory so I figured before buying RAM and paying to get it installed (since it's under the keyboard), I would update the BIOS. I updated without a problem and the memory is now recognized by the system so all is well.

Update 2. After upgrading BIOS and downloading the updated drivers from the DELL site, the computer works very well. I use it daily and have many windows open with no issue. I am going to replace the hard drive with a 7200 rpm or hybrid solid state and the battery but it works very well and I consider it a great buy. Just make sure you get the Intel graphics like I did and not the NVIDIA. There were issues with that chip with overheating, long story, just get the Intel.

I was so pleased with the service and specs I received from Tampa Laptops and have changed the rating from 4 to 5.

I was looking for a reasonably priced refurbished laptop and after much research, decided on a D630. I wanted windows 7, a fast processor with lots of RAM and the ability to multitask. From my research I decided that the only place I would buy is from Tampa Laptops because they seem to be very reputable.

The laptop arrived earlier than expected and was in great condition. It also had better specs than I originally ordered. Operationally it was not working perfectly which is why I gave it only 4 stars rather than 5. The seller was great and told me to reinstall the Operating System.

I did and the D630 was and is still not working correctly. After 2 days of troubleshooting, I finally figured out that one of the RAM chips is bad. There are 2 places for RAM on this model, one on the bottom of the computer than anyone can change and one under the keyboard. The under the keyboard RAM is bad which will necessitate me having to pay someone to install the RAM since it is too big of a job for me.

So the "bargain" price I received is not as much of a bargain since I will have to pay $40 for the RAM chip and $35 to get it installed. (I have written to the seller, explained everything and asked if they will send me a good RAM chip free of charge)

And the first 2 places I called do not want to install the RAM because they have to, in essence, take the computer apart so I have to search for someone that will do it, and they will probably charge me even more.

For approximately $200 it is a GREAT buy. As the cost inches toward the $300 mark, it is simply not as good of a buy and I may have selected another model, had I known I would have encountered this issue.

When you are buying a refurb, sight unseen, there are some expenses that you will have, particularly the battery but that is expected.

I would caution you to ask the seller to replace the RAM under the keyboard before you purchase this model, even if they tell you it is good unless you are real "techy" and feel comfortable removing the keyboard and clips. I would have thought that this was automatically part of the refurb process but I guess it's not.

If you are looking for a fast computer that can handle most tasks, other than gaming, and is sturdy and reliable the Dell Latitude D630 is a good choice,

I can't install all of my programs because of the issues so I have just installed the bare basics that I need.

Even with the hiccups the system if having, it does appear to be a fairly solid computer and I'd recommend it with the precautions noted above.

Tampa Laptops has a good reputation, the tech I spoke to when I first began having issues was super nice and even though I am a bit disappointed because of the RAM issue, I still feel they did good a good job and the D630 overall is a good buy.

This was purchased from Tampa-Laptops thru Amazon; and my wife is totally delighted with this unit. Just like her old one but a big jump in hardware. This arrived quickly; and was very clean with no scratches on the screen or on the face side of the unit. It looks and performs like a brand new unit. I Highly reccommend these folks if you are looking for a new laptop.

This is not so much as a product review but to show how excellent the customer service is for tampa laptops. I just want to say that I am very impressed on how professional this company is and how fast they are at responding to my needs and how fast the shipping was. I would definitely recommend Tampa Laptops to my friends and family and of course I love my Latitude D630. It is everything that I wanted and need in a laptop and the wrist rest is awesome, lol anyway I'm done

This computer is very fast. I got it with upgrades from the HP website. For the first two weeks I was very happy but then it broke. After calling HP 5 times totaling about three hours of talk time I got them to repair it. It took a week and a half to get back to me and I was happy for another month or so. Then it broke again. HP had installed some software wrong but they blamed me. It took about a month to get it fixed and I barely get away from paying $350 for a new motherboard. That was about a month ago and now the computer is acting up again...Do not buy from HP! Get a mac or alien ware or maybe even dell. Just not HP!

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV6T 16-Inch Laptop

I bought this laptop in April 2011 and liked its color, speed, and portability for the first five months I owned it. One morning in September I opened it up to find a spreading black spiderweb across the cracked screen. Googling something to the effect of HP laptop cracked screen; I was dismayed to read dozens if not hundreds of similar stories.

Not counting the careless (but honest) people who admitted on-line to stepping on, or dropping their computers, these large numbers of consumers were folks who, like me, one day had the nasty surprise of opening their laptops to find a damaged and unreadable screen.

Repeated calls up the food chain to HP were useless: they called the problem "physical damage" not covered by the 12-month warranty and said it would be $25 to ship it and estimate the repairs, which would cost another $150 (ballpark) dollars. My family of five has owned Gateway, Dell, Sony and Toshiba laptops -we've never encountered a cracked screen with any of them -even after 3,4, or 5 years of use!!

This HP product is 800 dollars worth of garbage. Don't buy it, and shame on you HP for robbing people of hundreds of dollars, for ignoring the manufacturing weakness this clearly is, and for developing an ex-clientele who is full of regret and frustration. Spread the word!!

I bought 2 Dells 2 years ago. One for me and my son. Both PCs are no good at this point. I do not even have them paid for. I paid around $550 each for them. It was my first laptop, so I was afraid to put a lot of cash into them. I was not sure if I would like a laptop. I bought a HP printer that I have gotten great service from. I wanted a HP PC. I also wanted one with a webcam built in. I needed one with high speed and more memory. The HP I bought is great. I did not know it had a side keyboard into I received it, which was a wonderful bonus. I am an accountant, so I love the side keyboard. It was always difficult using the numbers on top. It is a large laptop with a wider screen. It has a lot of features I probably will never use, but I am totally satisfied with the product. I have ordered books and other items from Amazon. I have gotten great serve from them.

I have a white Vaio CS320J. I have had it for 3 months and have had issues with the loud fan noise as well as a rumbling soung in the fan. The computer has overheated and shut off. Took the computer back to the store I bought it and they tried to charge me to have it diagnosed under warranty. I bought an extended warranty on this laptop to prevent issuse like this. I have had problems with Sony products in the past and decided to give them another try. Big mistake. Sony product are poorly manufactured and fall apart within months. I would never buy another Sony product. Do not buy this laptop unless you are okay with wasting hundreds of dollars. I would buy anything else over Sony. ANYTHING.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VGN-CS320J/Q 14.1-Inch Laptop - Black

I usually would not bother to spend time on writing a review, if I was not annoyed so badly.

I purchased a VGN-CS320J for my wife in June of 2009. After about 6 months a fan started making loud noise. The fan remains silent for 10 seconds and starts making noise for 10 seconds or so after that. This silence-noise-silence-noise pattern keeps going till I turn my laptop off. After some googling, I realized it's a quite common problem to the CS product line.

I am trying hard to calm it down and will update if I find a solution.

Don't buy VGN CS-320 (maybe other VGN CS models as well)!

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VGN-CS320J/Q 14.1-Inch Laptop - Black

I have had this laptop for 1.5 years, it is not my first VAIO. I have had no problems whatsoever with my other Vaios, this model is a constant hassle. It makes incredibly loud fan noises, shuts down, or doesn't respond to keyboard commands while it is making the very loud noise. I brought this in to a specialist, they took it apart and could not find any reason for this fan noise. Naturally, while with the specialist, it did not make the noise.

I thought that I would love this lap top, it was quite expensive at the time, but I thought that it would be worth it. After allmy other SONY VAIO laptops were great. Now, I find myself using the older VAIO, it is quiet and does not have the keyboard command issues.

I am sure that other models of the VAIO are great, but do not buy this model.

UPDATE-December 31st, 2010 I read on the comments that SONY had finally admitted that the fans were defective and was willing to replace them. I called SONY, described the problem and they sent a Tech, person to my house to replace the fan. This all occurred within 1 week. The laptop works great now, no fan noise, no overheating, it is perfect. I certainly wish that SONY would have alerted all of us to this problem to begin with, it would have saved a lot of time. money and aggravation.

Bought my Pink SONY Vaio Laptop in 2009. (Model Number VGN-CS320J). I bought SONY because I wanted to have something reliable that I could bring with my when traveling which was also capable of handling many applications at the same time. (I gave my old Dell Platitude to my son.)

I am disappointed on all counts. Battery has never lasted more than 1 hr. The Laptop heats up so much that it is too uncomfortable to hold on one's lap even over a 4" thick pad made to reduce heat transfer. The fan has been noisy from the beginning. Over time it has become even louder. It almost sounds like someone blowing their nose. (Don't even think about having a conversation with someone on Skype!) I expect the fan will fail shortly. The duo core does make it a little faster, but nothing spectacular. The keyboard is great, but hardly a reason to buy this piece of SONY cr-p.

The sound system is very good; very light weight, but several other facets about this computer have caused me to complain; most importantly the wireless internet connection is horrible. From day one we had problem with the download speed, we did speed test and got only .07 mbps, then try two other old laptops at the same spot and got about 9.0 mbps. We sent it to be repaired .three times in one month period, wireless card replaced, updated, re imaged and so forth, and they sent it back and say it is fixed, but it is not. We got several computer geeks in the family look at it they all believe the wireless card and etc. is poorly designed. in fact I have a satellite A505 as well that had the wireless problem but not as bad as this one, we are not happy with it and it is more than two months past from purchasing date, but more than a month was in the repair facility. However they cannot fix it and they will not give us a refund. We are in process of taking them to Court. For more information please see the video on you tube.

I'd shopped around for several months and narrowed it down to this and another model that cost $400 more... for the same specs. The other model, you were literally paying for the manufacturer's name. I've owned two other Toshibas and both lasted me over four years each, so I'm pretty confident in the Toshiba brand.

This thing has a better GPU than the two cards I have Crossfired in my desktop and handles everything I throw at it. (Note: I did upgrade the RAM to 12 gigs; it comes with 8 gigs)

I'm a digital artist and 3D modeler, and it handles 3DSMax, Maya, Photoshop CS5 Extended, Poser Pro 2012 and Lux Render with graphics tablet input like a champ. Doesn't choke at all. So if you're a gamer, you can buy with confidence knowing this thing will run them with ease (I'm a gamer, but bought this specifically for art and don't have any games loaded on it at the moment. But my desktop occasionally slows down on high poly renders that this laptop renders with ease yet the same desktop can run most games on very high or ultra settings, so that that as a good recommendation).

Another great point is this thing comes out of the box ready to play blurays. Previous models I've owned require you to purchase software in order to view blurays even though there's a bluray combo drive; Toshiba includes the bluray software. Loaded up Game of Thrones Season 2 bluray and it started playing immediately with no problems...and looked stunning on that 17.3 inch screen (the laptop is about 16.3 inches wide, so it'll fit in most bags that will hold a 17 inch laptop). Some have said the keys are tough to type on, but that hasn't been my experience--I've found them to be great and far less "clacky" than any I've had yet. They touchpad can be a bit persnickety though, so I advise a mouse.

Toshiba includes a free copy of Windows 8 for dummies once you register, but do yourself a favor and do a websearch for how to get your Windows 7 start menu back. Windows 8 looks to be a truly wonderful OS for touch screens, but it is pure garbage for standard non-touch systems. A quick web search found me a great program to get rid of that awful touch screen garbage and give me a usable desktop. One star docked for preloading that abomination of an OS on a non-touchscreen and forcing users to figure a way around it to make their computers usable.

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite S875-S7376 17.3-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed

The Toshiba arrived from Amazon with easy to comprehend instructions. The new Windows 8 took some time to comprehend. However, once learned, it became easy to navigate. I especially like the redundancies--different ways to get to certain programs or files.

One drawback, however, is the keyboard. A person must hit the keys directly in the middle; hitting the keys on the sides will not register letters when writing.

Because the computer is great otherwise, I invested in a portable keyboard to attach to my computer.

My Hewlett Packard laptop was dying so I decided to evaluate the field and after consideration decided upon purchasing this laptop. Overall I am pleased. I think the price for the overall package is very good. I have noticed two challenges for this Toshiba laptop. First, the bluetooth seems to drop out. This is rather inconvenient. My remote mouse suddenly stops working and I have to reconnect. The second problem is the speakers. I was very happy with my Hewlett Packard laptop speakers. They were really great. These Toshiba speakers sound cheap and tinny. Not happy with the speaker situation at all. If I switch to the headphones its fine. However, the speakers detract from the video or music experience. It looks like I will have to buy some external speakers. I really miss the HP laptop speakers.

The only thing that bothers me about this purchase are the speakers. I used to only purchase HP laptops. I took for granted their speakers. You really only miss something once its gone. I miss my HP laptop speakers.

I would probably provide 3.5 stars. I would give it 5 stars if both the bluetooth and speakers were up to par

I should also mention some things I like about this PC. First, its very fast. Second, the screen size is great for watching movies.

The Windows 8 operating system initially threw me for a loop. I deleted the bloatware and most of the Microsoft tiles. The I found some freeware named Oblytile. There are a number of YouTube videos that explain the program. I watched "Using OblyTile to improve Windows 8 start menu YouTube." This freeware program allows you to customize the start menu and develop tiles that access your favorite websites and applications. One day later I had everything set up the way I wanted. I'm actually happier with the way I've set up this PC then I was with my HP laptop (Windows 7). My start screen is set up very conveniently. I can access everything from this screen.

Almost didn't purchase based on poor reviews--for the most part I pay a lot of attention to purchaser reviews.

Didn't here because I have always had good experience with Toshiba products & this one offered a great deal for an excellent price--I7 Q4 chip, 8G mem, 1tb hd, dedicated graphics, etc.

The product exceeds my expectations. Very fast, great keyboard, etc. Yup, took me a couple of hours to figure out Windows 8 but what else is new?

We will see on durability, but I think other reviews should be taken cum grano salis in this case.

I have had this Model for over 1 1/2 years. I upgraded memory to 8GB Ram and it is extremely fast. The battery is still great and holds charge for over 3 hours.

I have had NO PROBLEMS with anything on this laptop, not the screen, hardware, keyboard, scroll pad or anything. I will say I generally use a wireless mouse with it. MY use is both for Internet and Business. I have also used it to play movies on my TV thru the HDMI. My only problem is I have to use a seperate Audio Cable. I do not think this is a flaw but the type of HDMI link for I have experienced this with other Laptops and one Desk Top. However, the Video quality was super. It was also quite easy to burn your restore disks with the included program. I do think the price is a little high considering the age of the Model. $350 would be more in line. The Good:

Good battery life.

Gaming can handle most DX9 games.

500gb secondary hard drive is very nice.

Keyboard feels good.

Never had any issues what so ever with this product.

The Bad:

Price is a little high, I actually paid $500 and regret it terribly.

The track pad is a joke, randomly doesnt work so I have to slighty touch it and move around and it corrects itself.

The Pentium processor runs like it is caught on fire. Seriously without a cooling pad this thing turns my lap sun burnt.

The "LED" display is quite dim and doesnt work well with sunlight.

The brown color is pretty ugly but I got a mouse that matches perfect so it isnt all bad.

Top of the computer gets finger prints mad crazy but luckily around the keyboard it has a texturized plastic housing which eliminates finger prints.

The keys are now showing some wear, not too noticeable except on the space bar.

You could get a better laptop for the price in my opinion.

I would recommend this product if it was around the $399 price range.

An Office Depot special...with a price at a penny less than four Benjamins this Toshiba represented a nice offer that I couldn't pass up. No, its operational speed isn't as snappy as my i7 desktop or the MSI i5 laptop I looked at just a few spots down from the demo of the C655D at the store, but it certainly smokes the Aspire One netbook I had been relegated to using full time as a portable computer when my old 15.4" Dell notebook finally called it a life. And only $50 more than what I spent on said netbook 2 1/2 years earlier.

So far I've found that the Toshiba's performance speed is more than decent for most business apps and certainly is a fair bit better than the old Dell that I became so used to. Preloaded with Microsoft Works, the Word 9 (otherwise known as 2007) component loads quickly and operates smoothly even if it's a bit dumbed down from the full version. Other programs I've installed so far seem to be swift and lag-free, with only Photoshop showing a bit more hesitancy than what I'm normally used to seeing. As for the internet, Firefox and IE8 seem to run as smoothly and quickly as they do on our other computers and Google Chrome is as blindingly fast (relatively speaking) as always.

Downsides (so far) are few: one wouldn't think that 0.2" would seem so much more massive, but this 15.6" seem so HUGE next to the Dell. The widescreen aspect of the C655D is the likely culprit, giving the Toshiba the heft and feel seem closer to that of a 17" laptop than a 15" one. Battery charge life is anemic relatively speaking; the best charge length experienced so far is a bit over 3 hours, but several sessions have not hit the 3 hour mark before reaching critical power reserve levels. This is not wholly unexpected considering its price class, but still disappointing nonetheless. There's no built-in camera, which again is something that's usually the case at this end of the laptop market. Sound quality through the built-in speakers is atrocious, and frankly isn't even all that great through the headphone jack.

The screen display is decent enough; on AC power images look good and appropriate for this computer's price point, and the ATI display chipset seems to handle video content with competence even if it's not all that spectacular. Like most machines these days, the C655D comes with the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. Build quality is decent for the money, but most of the plastics used definitely lean towards the bargain basement side. Heat buildup seems manageable; the left side of the computer where I believe the hard drive is located does get warm but it's not uncomfortably so. Even my netbook becomes more heated than this Toshiba.

There's some crapware loaded on the computer, but I've seen far worse in the past on other new machines. All uninstalled quickly. Norton is the preloaded security suite, a package that for me disappeared on the first day. To Norton's credit, it uninstalled cleanly and fairly painlessly and made the subsequent installation of Comodo--my security package of choice--quite easy.

It was probably too much to ask but only two USB 2.0 ports reside on this notebook, down from the four I was used to with the Dell. But at least there's a somewhat useful media card reader...even if it can't handle older CompactFlash II cards that I use with my Nikon D300. The DVD drive/burner seems to work well, although I've yet to really push its skill set. The keyboard design is passable as far as laptops go, feeling workable but personally for me it's not particularly comfortable. Perhaps it's the price one pays for going low-ball--having to put up with HUGE 'Toshiba' pronouncement on the cover--but the obnoxiously-sized logo on the back side of the LED display panel is more than a little off-putting. A date with a airbrush wand or a band-aid decal (Goodyear? Kawasaki? Budweiser? Sig Sauer? Hello Kitty?) seems like a much more preferable option.

In all I'm not doubting that this AMD-based laptop will do the job I will ask of it. It seems to pack a lot of performance for the discount price paid. For the money it's been a good, smart buy.

I paid $350 for this laptop. Whatever you do not pay more than $400.

While this laptop is nothing compared to a sony vaio or a Macintosh... for a budget laptop the performace of this laptop supercedes numerous other machines.

3gigs of ram. and 2 core processor is what you MUST have nowadays

its not that heavy, however the battery has rougly 2.5 hours of time (with normal brightness and internet use)

what i do not like about this laptop

NO WEBCAM!!! i mean it is a budget laptop, but come on webcam parts are soo cheap!!! i would have paid $10 extra for a webcam

it is pretty wide however that helps with the size and clarity of the screen.

the cd drive is pretty bad quality, sometimes if you play a cd the cd drive motor gets really loud!

other than that this laptop is great and gets the job done.

THANK YOU OFFICE DEPOT!!!

This was a present for my parents. they really love it. the specs on it were good on my end, and definitely support everything my parents need it for and more. all in all, a very happy purchase. it did come refurbished so box packaging wasn't that great, my parents were worried it would be all banged up, but once they opened it and starting using it, there has been nothing but praises and no complaints.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5048 15.6-Inch Laptop (Trax Texture in

As with every other computer I've bought, this one came pre-loaded with all sorts of trial software and other junk most people would never need. You'll probably want to wipe everything and install your own operating system.

This computer doesn't come with installation disks, though users have the option of creating their own backup DVDs. All of the software included with the system is housed in a protected, hidden partition that allows you to restore the computer to its factory configuration during boot, in case the operating system becomes seriously impaired (viruses, spyware, buggy software, and so on).

Given the cost, the specifications are of course very basic, so this computer is suitable mainly for web browsing and light office work. At the time of purchase, this was the most powerful computer you could get for the price. Any less expensive notebook was significantly worse in terms of processing power, memory, or disk capacity.

I've had this computer for many years, and it still works the same as when I first purchased it. Toshiba has one of the lowest hardware failure rates in the industry (second only to Asus at the time of purchase). Dell, Acer, and HP might be the most popular brands, but in my experience they have very poor quality hardware. I wouldn't buy from them, especially when companies such as Toshiba, Asus, and Vizio offer better products at a lower cost.

A beautiful laptop with a lot of issues. The laptop looks great and the screen is very clear. One of the only 1080p ultrabooks with a TPM chip so it works well from a corporate security standpoint. Very quick startup time and overall seems quick and responsive both when in use as well as startup/shutdown. Windows 8 is incredibly fast and 7 is not that far behind. One other plus is the support. So far I've gotten two quick responses through their live chat. Both responses weren't helpful, but it is nice to get someone quickly that can at least confirm your issue.

Some of problems I have with the laptop so far:

Battery life not as good as advertised. Mild use is closer to the 3.5-4 hour range.

Abbreviated keyboard. I'm not sure why with all the room on both sides of the keyboard they decided to leave off the PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys. I use Alt+Home all day long in browsers and the other keys for word processing and general navigation.

Trackpad. Like most other people are saying, the trackpad is a nightmare. The cursor constantly jumps around or locks on to a part of the screen you are not trying to select. Updated the driver, turned off the tap to select and it's still frustrating. I also had the cursor become completely unresponsive a few times already to the point I had to logout and back in to get it to work again.

For some odd reason they partitioned out the hard drive in a way that makes it difficult to carve out space for another OS. Multiple recovery partitions and a dedicated partition for the hibernation file prohibit adding any additional partitions. You can work around it by disabling hibernation and deleting the file and then reenabling it later on but tech support had no idea what I was talking about and couldn't give me a reason they needed multiple partitions for recovery.

Also, there are zero accessories for this device. That may seem like an after thought, but they literally do not sell A/C adapters yet. I checked with support to see about purchasing an additional adapter so I can have one for work and one for home but they do not sell them yet and do not have a timeframe for when they will. I asked what I would do if I lost mine and the answer was literally, "we will see what we can do."

Based on all these faults and the relatively high price, I would not recommend this to anyone.

I picked this up to use for personal and business travel because I wanted larger screen real estate than my iPad can offer but less weight than a traditional laptop. It's incredibly lightweight and the screen display/resolution is very, very good. On paper, the specs are great: 256Gb SSD, 4Gb RAM, and GB wireless NIC.

Here's where the device falls short: As noted by other reviewers, the touchpad, even under Win7 is pretty poor. I deducted one star for this reason. Downloading the latest drivers from Vizio's website helps a tad but it's just not as responsive as it should be. In fact, my 3 year-old Sony Vaio's touchpad is so much better such that you wonder why Vizio couldn't have pulled off a better design. The other drawback is a lack of a wired ethernet port but I didn't deduct any stars from the review since I knew this omission before buying.

The reason I deducted an additional star is that this device simply won't function under Ubuntu 12.04. The CT15 has an Atheros AR9462 Wireless NIC so Ubuntu (and most linux installs) will try to use the Ath9k drivers. Unfortunately, this chipset is not yet supported so I ended up with slow and often no network connectivity. Tweaking modprobe.d and loading the linux-backports-wireless modules wouldn't fix it. Moreover, the touchpad is just plain wonky under 12.04. Using dconfig-editor and/or Synaptics didn't help either. And you can imagine trying to troubleshoot these problems via a wireless internet connection of 1Mbps. I finally had to dig up an old USB-to-Ethernet peripheral to stay sane.

But the reason I deducted the last star was that after 10 days of daily use (despite the problems described above), the touchpad simply died. At first, I thought it was an Ubuntu issue but it also failed using Win7. (Fortunately, I had setup a dual-boot configuration which is not what I would've normally done I usually blow Windows off the system altogether.)

So while this laptop will probably work fine in Ubuntu six months from now, you'll probably want to wait until purchasing if that's what you want. If Win7 is your OS of choice, note that the touchpad is still just merely adequate and I wouldn't recommend it for long work sessions. I may take a look at the next gen of this unit because the display really is nice but until the touchpad is improved on the next gen, I suggest you wait.

Best Deals for VIZIO Thin and Light CT15-A2 15.6-Inch Laptop

First I like to say you can probably go to the Microsoft store and buy this. I bought this last weekend and there was a promo going on 20% off anything over a $1,000. So my laptop after tax was only a grand. Bought the two year insurance to go with it and after tax i paid 1250. Not to shabby.

I thought long and hard before I bought this laptop. I wanted all the reason to buy a Mac and to hate the vizio. I was comparing the Macbook Pro 13& 15inc & Air 13 inc, Samsung Series 9, Sony Z series. For the best bang for your buck. I choose the Vizio. Higher resolution then all 3, 1080p HD. Faster processor 1.9 i7. Yes many can argue the retina is better and higher. But be reminded your paying $2,200. There is a full HDMI on the ultra book. I know many normal laptops have the hdmi but for an ultra book Vizio its one of the few. But I believe it will become standard soon and other companies will follow.

Pros-

1. Fast!!! Boots up super quick

2. Screen is super nice, 1080p. Very nice viewing angles. I came from a 13 Inch Macbook and now I have a 15 and I cant go back.

3. Keyboard is wide, keys are shallow. (I can adapt to that)

4. The speakers are fair. Their pretty loud

5. When you adjust the brightness, it's bright!

6. 256 SSD for 1k. I'm not sure where you can find another laptop in that range. At least not yet.

Cons-

1. TRACK PAD!!! I came from a macbook, and even the macbook feels better. Trying to adjust. If I plug a mouse I know it will work fine, but I wish the track pad would be better.

2. No keyboard lights (I can live with, would have been nice)

3. No SD card slot (But I honestly don't remember the last time I used one, the adapter is only 10 bucks on amazon)

Conclusion:

Great machine for the price. The main reason I purchase the Vizio is because for Macbook Pro 15 Inch i would have had to pay 1800. Macbook Air to upgrade to the same specs would have been 1600. Samsung Series 9 with 256 would have cost 1700 (700 difference) And I heard their software takes up like 40 GB off the bat. Sony was like 1700 too. For me it came down to price and not brand. Many may argue you get what you pay. But right now I'm getting a lot for my buck. So I'm paying like 700 bucks less then most competitors. Yes I'm taking a risk with a new line. But that's why I have insurance. My biggest con will be the track pad. Coming from mac I almost cant stand it!!! I'm still adjusting. But this Vizio is a beast!

Enjoy

Honest reviews on VIZIO Thin and Light CT15-A2 15.6-Inch Laptop

The 15.6 inch Vizio Thin & Light is simply flawless. It is the best designed PC I have ever seen. I love the fact that the screen is 1080p and is matte. The surface is finger print proof and the body feels really durable. The only minor complaint is that the track pad isn't as amazing as the MacBook track pad. But in comparison to other PCs, this laptop probably has one of the better track pads. The keyboard may look a bit awkward, but after trying it and seeing in person, I am simply amazed. Typing is so easy and smooth. However, it might be a little loud compared to other laptops. The bottom has a soft rubber touch, making it easier to grip. The camera is probably one of the best cameras I've ever seen on a laptop. It shoots in 720p. The audio system is crisp and loud. I'd say that it is even better than the Beats Audio in my HP laptop. It does not offer a SD slot, but that should not deter people from buying this laptop. It is simply sleek, fast, and beautiful. Good job Vizio.

After purchasing the 15inch Vizio thin & light notebook at the Microsoft Store a few weeks back, and here are my thoughts:

First, the specs of my machine are the following:

15.6" 1080p IPS matte screen

Intel Core i7 (3rd generation "Ivy-Bridge" processor)

4GB RAM

256GB Solid-state hard drive

2x USB 3.0 ports

1x HDMI port

Price: $1199 + tax + $200 Microsoft Store gift card

First of all, I have to say that this machine is a great value for what you are paying. Don't be fooled by the Amazon pricing, I purchased this system for $1199 at the Microsoft Store, and it is listed at $1399 on Amazon (it's even $1249 on the Microsoft Store site, but I got a small discount, but I'm not sure why). Also, if you are a current college student, you can also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console when you purchase this laptop from the Microsoft Store (although I think a few other retailers such as NewEgg and Best Buy also have that promotion). I already have an Xbox, so I just chose to get a gift card instead. This should easily be enough to get a copy of Microsoft Office, a nice carrying case, and any other accessories you may need for free.

In addition, if you were to compare to compare this to a similarly spec'd MacBook Air, you're looking at about $1499. Now, granted, the Air is only a 13" while this is a 15", but all other specs will be similar, and even then you're not getting a 1080p screen on the Air. I'm not comparing this with the MacBook Pros since they all use the full voltage Ivy-Bridge processors, which means they are not really in the ultrabook category. Either way, there are a few caveats here and there, so it's hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison between this and any MacBook, but it's still worth considering.

Performance wise, I can say that I am very satisfied with the capabilities of the machine. I installed a copy of PCMark Vantage and got a score of about 12,300. This is comparable to other Ivy-Bridge equipped ultrabooks on the market (you can see some other results here: . In addition, due to the speedy SSD, I can shut down and restart in about 35-40 seconds.

The screen is 15.6" and full HD (1080p). That means that web-pages and videos look great. In addition, the screen also has a matte finish, so this helps reduce the amount of reflections that you usually see in glossy screens. Overall, the screen quality is excellent.

Battery life is decent. From my estimations, I seem to get about 4.25 hours when doing general web browsing/word processing. Keep in mind that due to the Core i7 processor and the 1080p screen, the battery life of this machine will be slightly lower than other similarly priced ultrabooks on the market.

There are a few downsides, however:

As is the problem with many Windows laptops these days, the trackpad is decent, but could be much better. The trackpad is manufactured by Sentelic, and not Synaptics, which tends to make the best trackpads. Strangely, the unit I purchased did not have multitouch enabled out of the box. I had to do a little bit of searching online to find an updated driver with two finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom gestures. I was finally able to get them working fine, but it's interesting that they are not turned on by default, even since the display units at the store have multitouch gestures enabled. In the end, however, I don't care too much about this since I tend to use an external mouse most of the time.

In addition, I found the wifi to be a little unstable in the first week or so, but after that it seems to be working fine.

Overall, I really enjoy using this machine. In terms of value, this is one of the best ultrabooks you can buy. Vizio has a ton of experience making good screens on their TVs, so it's no surprise that they were able to put a great screen on this machine as well. The performance meets or exceeds other ultrabooks on the market and the battery life is also pretty good. If you are worried about the trackpad, then I'd suggest you go to try one out at a store first before making a decision.

This was one of the few out there where you can upgrade the memory beyond 4 gb...16 gb! I upgraded and am ready to keep this laptop for years to come. Not to mention they sent Windows 7 (all versions) and Windows 8 for you to choose from! The scroll pad is top notch, the body is light, the monitor clear and precise. And the speed...16 gb...can I say more? Don't upgrade to 16 gb from HP, order from Crucial and put it in yourself. I saved $300! I also ordered the extra battery and the optical player (just in case I need it). Oh, and theres hardly any bloatware. HP did it right with this one!

My girlfriend's Acer laptop finally died. The hard drive for my girlfriend's Acer broke after six months. I went to the UPS store to ship it back (since Acer refuses to accept returns sent through the cheaper, USPS priority mail) and paid $50. The guy there said that they shipped out Dells and Acers several times a week. Red flag. Got the computer back after a month, the memory went bad and I had to replace that... the hard drive they replaced was junk and had to be reformatted 3 times... finally, the motherboard crapped out and now it is a giant paperweight. I bought the Acer for her two years ago for $800 and after a year and a half of very light use (mostly internet browsing, word processing), it died for good. I always knew Dell was junk and HP was hit-or-miss, and now I know never to get an Acer.

Onto ASUS. I started doing a bit of research and you will find, no joke, that ASUS and Apple consistently top the list for the most reliable computers. A paltry number of ASUS laptops actually get sent back for repairs. I got this laptop for my girlfriend as a replacement for the junk Acer and we couldn't be more pleased. The laptop stays cool, loads quickly, the keyboard has the right degree of sensitivity, the battery life is decent (about 4 hours). It returns from hibernation almost instantly, like a tablet. She likes playing The Sims 3 and the old Acer would freeze up and overheat every time she played it (keep in mind the Acer supposedly exceeded all the minimum requirements), the ASUS handles it very well. The graphics are decent and everything is very responsive. For light gaming, or older games, this laptop should have no problem. I don't recommend playing COD on here, but if you've got some games that are a couple years old, it shouldn't be an issue. HDMI output works as expected, I frequently plug it into my TV and watch shows and movies without any challenges. Finally, the unit stays VERY COOL, which has always been a problem with past laptops. A welcome change.

Yes, Windows 8 is every bit as annoying as everyone says it is. There are tutorials on the computer as well as a user guide on using Windows 8. I can already tell that Win 8 is going to be another Vista fiasco where they will replace it with a Windows 9 that is actually intuitive. HOWEVER, if you spend a few days with this, you eventually figure it out. Girlfriend is not very tech-savvy, but she is managing fine now. Windows 7 was much better, but that's not the laptop's fault. So far, the laptop has lived up to its claims. It is fast, lightweight, thin (for a 15.6-inch!), the colors are crisp and sharp, and the comprehensive warranty is the best in the industry. Even if you ACCIDENTALLY spill something on your laptop, they will take it in and repair it for you. At least, hypothetically. Not planning on testing that out. Case in point, this was a great budget laptop and I'm thinking of getting one for myself at this rate. The girlfriend loves it and has been gushing about it every day since receiving it. Great for students and light users. You will not find a better deal in this price range. Couldn't recommend it more. If this laptop lasts more than a year, ASUS will have a customer for life.

P.S. I recommend shopping around. Amazon is selling this for $550, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere online (I bought mine from Adorama Camera for $475!).

EDIT: 4/19/2013 Had some difficulties registering the accidental damage warranty through ASUS' website, but I emailed ASUS and they responded within two business days and handled the registration perfectly. Very prompt and professional. Also, another shopper commented about Adorama's bad reputation. I was unaware at the time I ordered my laptop and it's something to consider, but I have to say my laptop arrived brand new, sealed, with free 3-day shipping and no issues. Certainly think twice from ordering from them if you want, but the original intent of my message stays the same price compare. Amazon has great prices, but it doesn't hurt to look around.

My son who is very computer savvy turned me on to the ASUS brand. He purchased one about 6 months ago, essentially the same, but he paid considerably more for his. The i5 Intel processor combined with the memory makes this laptop lighting fast. I was actually quite impressed with the overall quality, fit and finish being exceptional. Can you call a laptop beautiful? Well compared to my HP G71, the statement fits. It's a good looking machine.

One of the first things I did before configuring my preferences on the operating system was to play a DVD to analyze the resolution. Is this bluray HD? The resolution was absolutely beautifully clear, bright and detailed. Now I am not a computer "geek", just an average "Joe" so I cannot lay out for you the technical specs as some will do, but I am extremely impressed by this brand.

Battery life is also again quite surprising compared to the G71. I didn't realize you could have a laptop exceed 3 to 4 hours of operating between recharges. Fantastic battery life.

Mine came with an ASUS 1 year warranty to protect me from myself. It covers the coffee spill that shorts out your computer. Something about liquid and electronics don't mix. It protects me against accidentally dropping it on concrete as I try to put it into my bag. Never heard of a warranty like that before, but I was happily surprised to find it in the paperwork. You need only register it with ASUS to begin the warranty.

As for the speakers, with my G71, I purchased an HP separate speaker because even at 100%, what came out was a whisper. The ASUS was a major improvement.

To sum it up, you will find a lightweight nicely textured cover (low maintenance) that is very attractive in Mocha, brushed aluminum keyboard face and a very high-resolution screen that will impress you. A keyboard that offers soft, but a positive feel. ASUS has exceeded my expectations and am thankful my son turned me on to the brand.

For the price and please take the time to look at the specs, in my humble opinion, the best deal you will find today while you compare apples to apples (no pun intended).

You will not be disappointed.

Follow up ~ Several days of play and it is still fantastic. On an unrelated subject, I found a company called Clam that has a software download that gives you the old fashioned "Start Botton". Give you the choice of XP, Vista or Windows 7. So if you feel a bit terrified about the new OS, you can have your comfy chair back.

I'm actually getting used to "8" and I'm liking it. For a little over $525, you will not find anything(same quality brand)even close to it for the money.

P.S. ~ And as for other merchants having it for less, read intently their "Return policy". When I had a small problem, Amazon was instantly there and I didn't have to jump through a single hoop. How much is peace of mind worth? The reason Amazon is my first place to buy, there Customer Service.

Best Deals for ASUS K55A-DS51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

I'm writing this review because I saw this laptop has so few. I bought this for myself as my 5-year-old HP laptop that had fan & battery problems from the get-go was finally starting to give out.

This laptop has a large, clear screen with great speakers so it's fine for watching a movie or show while cooking in the kitchen and the HDMI links up very easily with my TV when I plug it in in my room. There are a lot of complaints about Windows 8 out there but you can switch to the Windows 7 view easily if you find it too hard to figure out. My advice is that the world changes whether you like it or not so you might as well get accustomed to doing things in new ways all the time. I found Windows 8 to be much better when it comes to the startup/shutdown speed, hooking up to digital outlets and uninstalling programs like bloatware. The only thing I think is entirely counter-intuitive is how they show you your files. Having a "my computer" button on the Start page would fix this.

This computer is cool to the touch, I can barely hear the fan and the charge is lasting pretty long. It lasts over 3 hours on a full battery. Setting it up for the first time just took 5 minutes and you DO NOT need to have a Microsoft account (hotmail, msn.com) to finish it so don't bother if you don't have one.

If you are looking for a larger laptop with great sound and speed, buy this laptop.

Honest reviews on ASUS K55A-DS51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

After weeks of research landed on purchasing Asus K55a. Current / previous laptops are 4+ yr old 17" mac book pro and 4 year old Lenovo think pad running Vista. Asus is almost a bridge between Mac and Windows laptops. Consumer reports as of 5/2013 listed Asus 4th in overall tech help and products, Apple being 1st and Lenovo 3rd. Apple run great products at astronomical prices, and Lenovo are cheap IBM's now made entirely of left over parts in China. So hopefully Asus will be a bridge between these two.

The quality and designs of Asus are very similar to Apple with brushed aluminum and key pad feel. Key pad feel is very important for me as I do a lot of typing, and hated typing on my old Lenovo with punch card like feel. Also Asus seems to offer the lowest cost for 3rd gen Intel processors, and hard drive above 4gb, ideal being 8 gb. With this model memory can be expanded to 12 gb for bout $25-$50 for the DIY'er. As for gaming am not a gamer and I can't comment on the visual cards or speakers. However hooked up to HDTV via hdmi cables the picture transfer is as good if not better than my macbook.

And as for Windows 8 it is designed more for the new touch screen pc / ultra books coming out. In a few years everything will be convertible pc's with removable tablet screens. So yes Windows 8 is very annoying if one does not have a touch screen but in the tutorial you can switch back to Windows 7 in the main menu. Products and people claiming you need to buy a product to switch to Wind 7 are a scam! As for price Amazon is great seller usually on top of other main street sellers prices, just keep an eye out for sales. This unit can be had for under five hundred.
