I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I got a great deal on this computer through Amazon and it is by far the best computer I have owned. Given that I've had a Dell and HP, this VAIO was a huge step up from both. The processor is insanely fast. I just got done watching live TV while downloading songs at the same time and this laptop had no problems. Highly recommended!

I got this laptop a while ago because it seemed to be a good fit for all the specs, plus it was pretty sharp IMO. It was great for a little while, everything was fast and worked perfectly. After a while it started getting a bit slower and now it makes this awful sound. kind of a grinding, clicking sound. I am not sure if this is the fan or the hard drive, or if it can be even be fixed. So based on my experience with this computer I would recommend you to keep looking and find something better. I know for a fact that there are better computers for cheaper prices. Don't waste your money.

I was in the market for a new laptop for school that I could pick up for a good price. I ended up narrowing it down to a few models in the $400 $500 range with a 15.6" display. I ended up getting the Toshiba Satellite L655-5150 at Best Buy for $450, but seriously considered a few others. The Toshiba had 4GB of RAM, the most offered in this price range. The hard drive was only 320GB, but for me that is plenty. I have 2 TB of external drives I use to store videos and archived files on. If hard drive space is more important to you, you can find models offering 500 GB in this price range (The Gateway NV5105u is one I was considering.). The Intel P6200 processor is good, but not necessarily the best offered in the range (The Dell Inspiron I15R-1197MRB comes with a 2.4GHz I-3.). The inclusion of a number pad on the keyboard was a big selling point for me, and the overall aesthetics of the computer are good. Setup was extremely easy and the computer came with very little bloatware installed on the system. I am happy with the Toshiba, but there are several contenders in the "value-priced" laptop category. I think my second choice would have been HP's G62-457DX for $400.

I had the opportunity to set up the Best Buy (Torrance, CA) version and the experience was easy -for a PC -which is saying a lot from this Apple fiend. These are the steps this set-up required: 1) This rig was added to an existing PC only network behind a Lynksys router running a desktop and a Toshiba Satellite L505; 2) I registered w/ Toshiba; 3) Microsoft driven updates totaled 40 which took 3 turns of installing & restarting, but with this speedy machine it was a breeze; and 4) I downloaded and installed individually a menu of free/open source security software including AVG AV, Clam AV, Clam Win, Zone Alarm Firewall, and Panda Cloud AV -(so much because one of the users is Skype/social networks fiend, and so far no problems, and I like to keep it so).

The actual hardware is fabulous -very responsive keys on the keyboard which look like chiclet design to me. The boot and re-boot and turn off times are incredible for this price range. It feels like a well made and well thought out laptop. The only problem I had was the balance on my Podium Cool Pad laptop stand ( ) -the laptop is top heavy perhaps due to the 6-cell battery -and unless balanced precisely it will fall over screen first which is not good for rugged, gaming, dorm room/student use.

The owner set up the webcam, Skype and facial recognition features, and they must be very easy and smooth because I have received no Help! requests, and I hear much laughter from their area.

I bought the toshiba satellite L655-S5150 last February when my old computer broke. I was in a pinch and had to buy a computer that day. I ended up getting this one on sale in the $400 to $500 price range (I can't remember the exact price). I love this laptop. It is by far my favorite computer that I have owned and I have had no problems with it. I like that a numeric pad is also on the key board. My husband ended up getting the same series but a different model than mine and the only difference I notice in his is that his keyboard is backlit. Nice feature, but I wouldn't have paid for it. All in all you can't go wrong with this laptop. I am a full time student and I can keep everything I need on here.

Bought this just before Christmas. It arrived right before New Year's. I started moving my files off my external hard drive to the Lenovo and foolishly thought I was back in business. Wrong. Here are all the problems I confronted in the last 3 weeks. Note that some can be fixed, some can be fixed but instantly revert to how they were before, and some can't be fixed at all.

1) The wifi is shaky. It will connect to some networks, not to others. The computer will slow then halt, and you can't access anything. Rebooting doesn't work and it has nothing to do with resetting the wireless router.

2) The computer crashes in sleep mode. I'm used to being able to have some documents open, close the screen, open it either 5 minutes or 5 hours later and have my documents all there again. It's fine for a few minutes, but anything longer and it crashes. It's hard to tell when this happens since Windows 8 boots so quickly, I'm not sure if the crash is happening on the restart or during sleep, but regardless, it crashes and you have to restore all your work. Lenovo support walked me through a "fix" for this, but it didn't work. In fact, none of their attempts to fix this worked. When you go to your power profile and select "what computer does when I shut lid" as sleep mode, it still crashes. Lenovo support's great idea was to change it to say "do nothing." Well, then it drains the battery down just as fast when it's closed as if you were working on it. I changed it to hibernate, which worked for 2 days, then it started resetting itself backward to "do nothing."

3) The battery indicator cannot be shut off. I first tried to shut off the low battery indicators in the sound profile, that didn't work. I disabled all sound, and that didn't work. I have to mute all sound which does work, but then you can't listen to music at the same time. It's aggravating that at 10%, your computer will loudly beep every 5 seconds and you can't stop it.

4) The media card reader won't read my SD card. Lenovo support had me reinstall drivers, still won't work. They told me I need to connect with a USB cable and I said this is brand new it should work the way it was intended. They said to send it back to them for a factory reset. Three weeks old and this hunk of junk needs a factory reset? Awesome.

5) Every hour the computer tells me that it's running low on memory and I need to reboot. This is fantastic news isn't it?

6) The keyboard is shaky at best. If you know how to type, you'll be shocked that your fingers keep hitting the wrong keys. There's some give in the whole keyboard that makes it feel like it can easily break. In fact, when I pulled this out of the box, the keyboard shell was actually outside of the computer. I had to snap it back in.

7) Why why why did these idiots mess with the function keys? I had to access the BIOS profile (boot up, hit FN F2) and change the hotkeys to legacy mode. I've worked in Excel for years, and F2 allows you to edit inside a cell. But no, Lenovo had to make F2 the volume key.

I did manage to fix some Windows 8 issues added a shutdown key and modified the registry to get rid of the annoying lock screen because it would hijack a couple letters of your password so you'd get the "wrong password" message every time you logged in. But those two fixes weren't enough to console me through the rest of the drama.

There seems to be a known issue with the touchpad of the U510. Google search query "lenovo jumpy and laggy touchpad" for literally PAGES of complaints. Avoid this model, and potentially the entire U510 series. Below is one excerpt:

"After calling Lenovo about the jumpy mouse experience on the first U510 they sent me, they said they would ship me out another laptop as a replacement.

The new machine arrived, and I took it out of the package and turned it on. As it booted for the first time, I was presented with the standard Lenovo "click Accept" screen (so I could create my Windows 8 account, etc.). I touched the touchpad for the first time to try to click `Accept', and the mouse jumped all over the screen! I couldn't even click the very first button to allow the computer to continue setting up! The replacement exhibited all of the same issues as the first laptop!

So I continue working with it. I tried adjusting all of the sensitivities related to the touchpad, but to no avail. I called my wife over, and we stood back and watched the mouse jitter randomly all over the desktop, find its way to a program icon, open the program, and then drag part of the screen to resize the application. ALL. WITHOUT. BEING. TOUCHED.

We now have TWO laptops sitting on our table, each with the mouse jittering away completely unusable as-is. I have a backup corded USB mouse that I am using in the meantime, and the only way I can prevent the machine from randomly clicking and dragging things across the screen is by physically disabling the touchpad using the F-keys.

And I tried everything to fix it: uninstalling the drivers. Reinstalling the drivers. Trying the drivers from ELAN, as well as Synaptics. I tried working with the Device Manager, and with other Windows 8 settings. No solution.

I have to send the first one back, and the second one will follow.

Lenovo, what are you going to do to fix this? I have been a loyal customer for years, and my confidence in your products is severely shaken. When I called the customer service representative the first time, I specifically asked: "Is this problem typical for this model" and I was told "No". Two unusable laptops in a row, now. And as the second one was on its way to me, I was shopping around for other laptops on your website (Yand Z-series)... but I refuse to get ANYTHING from Lenovo since they all seem to list "standard trackpad" as the mouse input.

Unbelievable. What will you do to salvage your reputation? Unless something is done, and quickly, I cannot vouch for your products to my friends or family ever again."

After a month, I thought I fixed it with Lenovo support, but the laptop's wireless adapter stops functioning occasionally after being asleep or off. The only way to fix this issue was to restart the computer, hoping that it would function correctly upon restart--and sometimes it wouldn't. Another issue was that the laptop would shut down instead of go to sleep upon closing the lid (even though the settings were not set to do that). I thought I solved this issue by installing Lenovo drivers and windows updates, but it turns out that wasn't the case. Finally, the brightness indicator did not function correctly--leaving the brightness fully lit when the indicator showed it at half, etc.

Overall, I had purchased this laptop and then exchanged it for a new one when I ran into issues with the first. Turns out, it seems that every one of the laptops have issues like this. In the end, I decided to return and go with a different brand that I've used in the past that I believe is more reliable. Once Lenovo can start proving their consumer lines like they can with the ThinkPad, then maybe I'll pay attention. Until then, consider me a non Lenovo-fanboy.

There are so many good things about this computer but I can't understand why Lenovo would release it with this keyboard. The keys have no spring in them & it sticks. The mouse pad is worst. If they couldn't match the Mac pad why not just leave the standard Lenovo mousepad? I'm going to look for another option maybe next year they will fix these kinks. The size, weight & keyboard lights are great... Stinks that they took cheap route on the keyboard & mouse pad.i

I got this product because I was looking for a thin laptop with good capabilities. I especially liked the fact that this laptop looked like a mac without the expensive price. However, I got home and whenever you shut off the laptop the wireless disconnects and it doesn't recognize any wireless networks unless you are within a few feet away from your router. Apparently this is a defect that these laptops have and I am not the only one with this problem. Other than that this laptop is ok. I did notice that the picture quality is just okay and its very pixelated.

The bottom line is that I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone unless you are going to be using it within a few feet from the router.

This is a video review of the Lenovo S10-3t with Windows 7 Premium and 2 GB of memory.

My overall impression is quite positive given the flexibility of using my existing PC applications and using it as a tablet for reading e-books, surfing the internet, and watching videos. One pleasant surprise is that the wide screen display gives me a much better internet browsing experience than my other existing netbooks. In my opinion, it does a lot more than an iPad with a similar price as its low-end model.

The multi-touch experience is not the best but it works quite well after some training.

Two things: this model (-85U) comes with Windows 7 Home Premium and with a 4-cell battery. Home Premium, unlike Starter, has a ton of built-in touchscreen features that all work well with this machine. If you read the reviews of the -37U version of the S10-3T, you'll see that many people complained about the size and weight of the 8-cell battery.

About speed -I uninstalled most of the Lenovo "extras" and swapped the RAM for a 2 GB module (I used the Crucial only because it was Prime-eligible). The printed manual has clear instructions for replacing the RAM. At this point, the machine is quite snappy except when it isn't. That is, when Windows decides to do an upgrade or when some process runs amok, the machine becomes nearly unusable. The rest of the time, it is fine.

I really wanted an Android tablet, but since no acceptable one yet exists, this was a good compromise solution. I like having Windows, with its unlimited supply of applications, but I don't like the larger size and weight nor the limited battery life (I think it may be less than 3 hours, but I haven't run it down yet). For the best info, search for Jesse B Anderson's stuff -he'll help you decide.

I read a lot of digital comic books and had contemplated getting an iPad so that I could once again read my comic books anywhere, rather than sitting in the basement at the computer desk.

After learning how little space is on the iPad I started searching for iPad alternatives and the S10-3T came up.

I got it about a week and a half ago and it is perfect for my needs.

Not only can I read my comic books anywhere I want, I can do about 85% of the stuff I use my regular PC for. I find myself in the basement less and less. Still use the PC for photoshop work, development stuff, games, etc.

I too upgraded to 2 GB of RAM...you just have to...it'll make or break your perception of the netbook. I also use the SD card slot for ReadyBoost, saw def improvements with that as well. I removed a ton of the 'bloatware' (mainly lenovo pre-installed applications) that came with it. Also made some tweaks via ......great site for getting the most out of your S10-3T.

My 4 negatives (but by no means a deal breaker):

No bluetooth (i ordered a usb one)

No way (yet) to upgrade the CPU

Battery only lasts like 3 hours with WiFi on, though if i had the 8 cell, a negative might be the weight...right now i can hold it with one hand while reading

No SSD drive....from what I have read it really increases performance. Once they come down in price for larger ones (250GB+), i'll upgrade mine

Anyway...if you are not sure about the iPad, and don't want to wait for a legitimate Tablet PC, this will def be worth it.

I was surprised by the size and weight. I thought it would be larger and heavier, but it's about the same size and weight as the HP Mini 10.2". My unit has the 4-cell battery, but it has Windows 7 Home Premium already installed which is a great trade-off. I purchased the larger battery from Lenovo and am still waiting for it. I immediately installed the 2GB memory upgrade. It was very easy to do. The hardest part of that process was unscrewing the back. The screws are embedded in the lid and do not come out, so they can't get lost. The old memory card snapped out and the new one snapped in. The system recognized it and I was ready to go. The unit comes with functional versions of MS 2010 Word and Excel. You would have to purchase the full MS Office program if you want all the components. The Natural Touch program may take some getting use to. The Lenovo uses finger touch-a learning curve. I am very happy I can watch movies through an optional portable DVD drive. As soon as I can get to a wireless connection, I will download iTunes and transfer my files. The speakers exist, but the sound through headphones is great. Music sounds good and has good bass. My unit also came with the SIM card option. I will test that at a later date because I am overseas. I put a DecalGirl decal on the outside cover, but they only make them for the S10 and it is not the same size. Still, it is enough to protect the outside cover from scratches and fingerprints until they make one specifically for the S10-3T. If it weren't for the difficulty I'm having in calibrating for finger touch, I would have given this a 5-star rating. The other drawback is it has only 2 USB ports, but I can get around that with a hub. I am going through the programs and getting rid of the ones I don't want. I deleted MacAfee and installed Norton Antivirus. I originally purchased this through Best Buy online but it was on back order indefinitely. I watched the price on Amazon until it dropped to $397 and I bought it quickly. A week later the price jumped up again and stayed high due to high demand. Every store I went to was sold out. If I had known everything about this unit I know now, I would believe it was worth $500 but not more. A netbook should not cost so much. Overall, I'm glad I got this. I travel extensively and this is a wonderful alternative to lugging around a full laptop.

I bought this computer as a replacement for another netbook. I figured the touch screen would be helpful for taking notes, marking up papers, and the like (I'm a PhD student). At the price, it couldn't be beat -it was one of the lowest-cost touchscreen / tablet full computer (i.e., just like a regular computer, versus something like an iPad) portables on the market. I find a lot to like about the computer, but also a lot to dislike. Overall, a good value for the price, if you can deal with the minor annoyances.

Major parts:

Touchscreen: A nice feature, definitely is fun to use in Microsoft OneNote. Not as useful as I thought it would be, mostly because Adobe Acrobat has terrible support for touchscreen (completely unexpected, for a product touted to be a replacement for paper ...). Occasional problems with deadzones, but these usually go away after cleaning. Slow response, due mostly to Windows 7, plus the fact that the computer is not terribly fast.

Screen / image quality: Could be better, could be worse. It does the job. Poor viewing angles. Image starts looking washed out if you're ten degrees off the vertical, which limits the usability of tablet mode. Also, screen has a slightly warm color cast ... the whites look a little orange-green. You can even it out somewhat with Windows 7 gamma control, but not entirely. Also, aspect ratio is a little off: images are flatter/wider than they should be, in landscape mode. This means in portrait mode, everything is taller/narrower than it should be. Moral of the story: To show pictures of yourself (or your significant other) in the most flattering light, use portrait mode :-)

Keyboard: Nice that the keys are close to full-size. Layout is overall okay, EXCEPT that the lower-left corner key is a FN function key, not a CTRL key as one might expect. The CTRL key is to the right of the FN key. Maybe someone could find a way to remap the keys, then you could swap them?

Touchpad: Overall, usable. Textured surface is nice. Note that there are no real buttons. The lower corners of the pad serve as pseudo-buttons. When you click, the whole pad dips down into the respective corner. Makes it hard to do click and drag, unless you use the tapping mode (but that only really works for left-click ...)

Below are small annoyances (some smaller than others):

The fan: This fan is the single most annoying thing about this computer. Of course, when it's off, it's great. But when it's on ... it's super, super loud. And, for some reason, it runs almost all the time. If you can concentrate with a intermittent, usually on, stream of white noise emanating from in front of you, more power to you ... but I find that the fan noise breaks my concentration. It literally makes it hard for me to think. Note, it's almost unnoticeable out of the house, but at home, in my bedroom, where I do most of my work, it sounds very, very loud, at least to me. I thought the fan on my previous netbook (Acer Aspire One) was loud, but the Lenovo takes the cake. If you can not stand loud fan noises, do NOT buy this computer.

Webcam: The webcam gets the job done. But, it's off to the side, which means whoever you're camming with will get a three-quarter view of your face. This is not such a bad thing if the right side of your face is your "good side". Potentially disaster if it isn't ... :-)

-Battery life: It's a 4-cell, which means it's light, both in terms of weight and power. Realistically, with Windows 7 Home, you're looking at a little under two hours. If you upgrade to an 8-cell, it'll stick out a little, and add about half a pound, bringing the weight up to about 3 pounds even, which is about the same as the weight of the 4-cell plus the AC adapter. I would recommend the 8-cell.

The AC adapter wire is a little on the short side. So in coffeeshops, you'll need to sit maybe a foot closer to a power outlet. I'd suggest just getting an 8-cell battery and leave the adapter at home.

Tips:

Buy an 8-cell battery or be doomed to carry your AC adapter everywhere.

Get the 2 GB RAM upgrade if you don't want to spend half your life waiting for Windows 7 to respond to your mouse clicks.

Get a stylus or suffer from a constantly smudged screen. (Note: you need a touch-capacitive stylus. Any that work for the iPad will work.)

When turning the screen to enter / exit tablet mode, ALWAYS apply force to the bottom corners of the screen (near where the buttons on the screen bevel are). NEVER apply force to the top corners, otherwise you may suffer a crack in the screen which will most likely NOT be covered by warranty. Basically, when turning the screen, you want to do so in a way that causes the screen to flex the LEAST, which means applying force as close to the hinge as possible.

Overall:

A good value for the price, if you can deal with the minor annoyances.

I personally would not buy this computer again.

This laptop is extremely lightweight and boots up so amazingly fast.

I love the backlit keyboard and I love that I don't have to bang on it to get my letters to go. I love the fast processor and that I really have no issues doing all the things I generally spend my day doing (nothing too intensive...haven't tried intense gaming on this) The screen is matted instead of shiny, which I am a fan of.

But as another person mentioned....the battery life...yikes. I've had this for about a year now...

I can probably go...3-4 hours on battery. But heaven help me if I am trying to google hangout...cuz that zaps it even faster.

It does tend to overheat pretty quickly considering the body is totally metal. So be careful with that. If you're going to stick it into a case...I'd actually shut it down (the boot up time is so fast, that really...it's not worth "hibernating it") I've had it before where I thought it went to sleep...but it was still going and was burning to the touch by the time I realized and yanked it out of my case.

The trackpad is awful and has started to develop...discolorations where I use it the most, so I've switched over to a mouse.

There's a USB 2.0 (left side)and a USB 3.0(right side)...which is ok considering how insanely thin this is. I would say...it definitely rivals Macbook air in thinness.

It does come with an adapter for LAN use which is nice...and some reviews on other sites mentioned issues with wi-fi...but I actually have not experienced any.

The headphone jack and microphone jack are one on the same, so you don't get two 35mm for each. Not a major deal for me since there's a built in mic...

If you can get this for pretty cheap...it's a good supplemental computer, but just know that there are drawbacks.

Since I got this computer I always had had problems with it because the display froze and had to restart the pc in order to use it. After endless calls to sony they were not able to help and even they ended my chat sessions more than once in the middle of the conversation.

Plus I never got to use the bluetooth because it just did not worked. I reinstalled all registries, software, tried using an external bluetooth and nothing. Since new, I have never used bluetooth. Sony could not solve the problem.

THIS WILL BE MY FIRST AND LAST SONY PC. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PC.

I bought this pc about three and a half years ago, and I love it! The battery is messed up now and won't hold a charge, but I blame myself for leaving it on while charging on sleep mode.

It's more for those people who are getting their first or second pc, but do not be fooled. I edit videos and play games and the pc is still running like it did back when I first bought it (more or less).

Having the bluetooth feature is great if you know how to use it, and the video card is pretty decent for the price comparing todays standards. I bought this pc for $899 back in 09, and looking at the price here, it's a VERY good deal. Definitely recommend. The people who say that they "Hate Sony" and "will never buy Sony again" are just people who don't know how to take care of their things. Take care of this PC, and it will serve you very well.

This is actually a response to the 1st review, I copy and pasted it because I thought this deserved a 2nd opinion.

I bought the exact same model for my daughter, and did have a problem with it heating up too much, but got a letter in the mail telling me to download new BIOS, which I did and it runs nice and cool.

As far as the "pointer" jumping around. I understand what you may have run into. The "cursor" is sensitive to shortcuts, which sometimes happen when your fingers are resting, ever so slightly, on one key (say ALT) and you hit another, causing something completely unexpected to happen. This is solved two ways, A. By being more careful, and getting used to the keyboard. B. By going into the keyboard sensitivity adjustment, and making it less sensitive.

This laptop is far more advanced than any other on the market, which is why so many have these little quirks with it. I have no reason to stick up for SONY other than the fact that I really love SONY VAIO, so much so that I bought another model the VPCEA24FN which also plays Blu-Rays and can record Blu-Ray, as I'm into high end video.

My daughter is a gamer and anime artist, she has no problem with it. I had a Mac Book Pro also during this time and returned it after a month because I found it slower than the SONY. Maybe in a laboratory it isn't, but for me typing something on GOOGLE and waiting up to 30 seconds watching the bar fill up until it loaded wasn't fun. I returned the Mac Book Pro and got another SONY VAIO. This was after having 3 HP's that crapped out a month after the warranty was up.

Maybe the SONY VAIO line isn't for everybody, but I see people who are in the entertainment business using them, and also a few of my doctors I see for neurology also have them. To each their own. Perhaps you got one that just needed some tweaking. That's what someone said about the MacBook Pro that I returned.

i purchased my vaio based on what i thought would be quality

laptop. well wasn't i surprized.

the display back light failed after 13 mo. i didn't purchase the

extended warranty because they are, or should be, a come on. the price

to repair was over $400. how rediculous.

i have owned many pc's/laptops over the years and have never had one

fail within 3 yrs.

i am so disappointed in sony. i will never buy anything sony EVER. when

i went to buy a new led tv i chose samsung and i'm glad i did.

I debated spending close to $500 when there are so many laptops in the $400 range, but am glad I did. It was pretty easy to set up and the HDMI port is great for showing the internet on my TV. It is much lighter than my previous laptop. Note to those of you with email that uses a POP server -Windows 8 email app does not support POP servers. But I found Mozilla Thunderbird and it is working out fine. The interface is similar to Microsoft Outlook.

About one week after I got this laptop, it started crashing and getting the Blue Screen of Death. I've had it for a month and a half now and it's been getting worse. I contacted the Sony representatives and they gave me a few ways to fix the problem. I hope it works, but I would rather have not gone through any problems at all. Also, the webcam is of horrible quality. I played around with the settings and it's still very grainy and captures almost no light. The mouse keeps freezing, too. I have to uninstall and then reinstall the driver for that. The outside of this laptop is beautiful, but the inside is clearly not. I hope Sony will help me out with all of my problems.

I felt compelled to endorse the Acer Travelmate. I wanted a 13.3" Windows 7 laptop with 3rd gen Intel Processor and the Acer was the cheapest option I found by far. I couldn't find any reviews but I really like mine so far.:

I've had my A6025 for 3 years, adding 3 extra gigs of RAM, which makes it super fast. Nothing else. No crashes, no freezes. Very secure and practical due to the biometric fingerprint reader. Dropped it a few times, no major damage other than minor scrapes. The HDD protector kicks in disabling the reader to protect the Hard drive. Bought an HP D7V, a Sony VAIO, a Toshiba, and none could even come close to the build, features and sturdiness of this laptop.

I bought my fujitsu A6025 in 2007 so I'm not sure if this is the same model. Nevertheless, it had so many problems from the start. First, my battery died shortly after one year, and I almost always had my laptop plugged in. The only time I would unplug was to transport it from one place to another. Once the battery died, my laptop would last 7 minutes before it would automatically shut off. Secondly, it seemed to have a lot of gliches in it's system. Often times the screen would blink while I was surfing the web or using Microsoft Office. Lastly, after about 3 years, I started getting kicked off the internet frequently. It was very frustrating. The other laptops in my home were fine so I know it was this one. I finally contacted tech support and they had me download a software to prevent that. I still got kicked off for about a month after that, but eventually it stopped. Not sure why that was... But after enduring this laptop for 5 years, I'm finally getting a new one, and it's not going to be fujitsu.

This is my second Lenovo notebook. The first one was a ThinkPad R61 which I liked very much. It got stolen out of the back of my car. So, liking the Lenovo product, I bought a new one. The product I am reviewing is similar to the "item being reviewed," the main differences being that I have a 2.0G processor where this one has a 2.13G processor.

Build Quality:

Lenovo is the company which manufactured IBM's laptop computers. IBM's laptops were designed for business users. They were tough enough to be dragged around everywhere. It continues to make laptop computers which are more road friendly than the competition, even in this unit which is "home user" oriented. On most of the competition's laptop computers for school and home use, you can twist the lid/screen and there is a good deal of flex. Not so here. This means the screen is less likely to get damaged or cracked. The rest of the case similarly has little flex which means it is well built. While the keyboard is not up to the quality of the ThinkPad line, it is still very good and does not have much flex or bend when you type on it. It is a bit heavy weighing in at over 6 lbs, but it is worth it to me when I consider that it is less likely to break.

XP Drivers available on-line:

The Y530 comes with Vista Home Premium. Mine has the 64 bit o/s. I hate Vista. It is bloated, slow, overly intrusive, the Start Menu was modified poorly from XP, it is cumbersome to find any administrative tools and it does not work with many pieces of business software. When Microsoft updates their operating systems, it seems that only their software works on the newer o/s. WordPerfect X3 (the better word processor!), Paperport 11.0, older versions of WordPerfect and Legal Solutions Plus and many older game programs simply won't work properly, even when you tell the system to run the program in XP mode. This, I suspect, is the reason about 75% of the business computers still run XP.

Vista Ultimate and Business come with downgrade rights to XP. Here, no such rights exist; HOWEVER, Lenovo provides drivers and software on line so you can load XP!!! (XP is faster than Vista and runs everything I need!) I will be downgrading.

Performance:

I get the following benchmarks with Vista:

Performance Test 6.1: 525.7

PC Wizard (not valid because of 64 bit o/s) = 2047

3DMark 01 = 5193

3DMark 03 = 2269

3DMark 05 = 1199

3DMark 06 = 905

SuperPI calculation of PI to 1M places takes 29.25 seconds.

PLEASE REMEMBER, MINE HAS THE SLOWER PROCESSOR SO THIS SHOULD BE ABOUT 5 10% FASTER!

In short, this machine is not as fast as my 2 year old XP based desktop which has a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo with 2G of memory, an ATI All In Wonder X800XL video card on a Gigabyte 965G-DS3 motherboard running XP. This box is not up to speed for modern gamers. It has good speed as a home entertainment and business/school oriented system. An O/S downgrade to XP would no doubt give you an extra 10% or so of speed.

Appearance and Functionality:

Lenovo still goes with the industrial black look. The outside is plain dull black which is textured so as to make it easier to grip. None of the high gloss colored plastic stuff that is on so many HPs and Dells and Sony Vaios.

Inside, you get a piano black high gloss plastic surrounding the 15.4" screen. The hinge is in the back of the machine, and rather than clamp the screen on the top of the box, the lid is bent and wraps around the computer/keyboard/electronics bottom section. The keyboard is surrounded by a single piece of brushed metal with a black touch sensitive multimedia controls above the keyboard and an orange volume control on the right side of the touch controls.

The box contains five speakers, including an alleged subwoofer which fires downward under the computer. I would look at the Toshibas with the HK speaker systems for a better audio performance.

It comes with a multi-card reader slot, dual layer dvd/CD writer, HDMI output, VGA output, 3 USB ports, modem, ethernet port, built in WIFI, Dolby Digital sound system, microphone and 1.3 megapixel camera in the lid. It includes Veriface software which allows the computer to enter your log-on password using just your image. The Veriface software is very sensitive, and works only from the right distance and at the same angle. It does not seem to be available on XP.

Cons:

Unlike HP, the keyboard has no angle to it, so you are typing on a slightly uncomfortable surface if you have it on a desk or table. There are four small rubber pieces which protect the screen when the lid is closed. Two are right under your wrists and my writs rub against them unless I wear a long sleve shirt. It comes with Vista and a trial version of Norton Anti-virus, which I find ineffective and annoying.

The high gloss screen is a little too high gloss and too reflective under certain circumstances.

Conclusion:

Based on the price to performance ratio, excelent build quality and availability of XP drivers on line, I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again.

Pros:

1)value for money in the price range below 800$

2)if you like glossy screens...well this one is very nice. And yes, it's very reflective but it doesnt cause any problems even with some strong spotlights in the background. I was a little afraid that it would reflect everything and disturb actual scrren images but everyhings good.

3)4 speakers really do their job...much better than standard 2 speaker buzzzz:)

4)all the ports are located on the sides (better availability then at the back)

5)design (presonally i dont care about that in a computer but you might:)

6)external battery life indicator (nice!)

Cons:

1)Vista (but i am too lazy to undergrade)

2)screen protection rubbers are under your wrists while you type (not painful, just annoying)

3)touchpad buttons could be a little more sensitive (somtimes you need a double double-click for some things to work..or is it just Vista?:)

4)loads of unnecessary programs from lenovo, norton ect.

Overall i recommend this laptop for home and not hardcore(quite big and heavy) mobile use.

I bought this computer primarily for entertainment purposes and it's handled everything I've thrown at it. I splurged for the nvidia dedicated graphics card which means I can play games like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and The Witcher on full res with no lag (even with environmental details like rain). Besides gaming, streaming Netflix and Hulu is a breeze and the screen is an excellent size for watching movies. As far as speakers go, the Dolby surround (which really works) plus the subwoofer is worth the extra weight, they sound better than many external speakers, and can get pretty loud if that's what you're into.

I thought that I wouldn't like the reflective screen but it really hasn't been a problem, the colors still come through bright and crisp.

For everyday use (work/school) this computer is a bit heavy to lug it around all day (but it's doable). I am using it for some basic bioinformatics (sequence alignment, etc) for which it is perfectly adequate.

What else? The 4GB ram means that the computer is fantastically fast, but as the other reviews have mentioned, Vista is a pain and eats up a full 2GB, you'll want to downgrade to XP(or upgrade when windows 7 comes out). If you decide to splurge for the Nvidia card like I did you should check for driver updates, mine were not up to date and it makes a difference performance-wise. The computer also came with "free trial" software including unregistered versions of Microsoft Office, so I had to spend a good 2 hours cleaning up my hard drive.

All in all, once I got the computer set up it has been smooth sailing with very few issues, none of which are related to the hardware itself.

Lenovo is known for making excellent products, and the Y530 is no exception. I have gone through various OSes on this laptop, including:

*Windows Vista HP (included w/laptop)

*Ubuntu 10.04 (for about a month; ran very well, just don't care too much for Linux)

*Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (my last operating system, which I had for nearly 2 years)

And now I'm on Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64-bit, which runs EXTREMELY FAST on this laptop! All OSes have run very well, but Windows 8 is probably the fastest system I've ever seen run in my life.

The build quality, hardware quality, and aesthetics are all top-notch... My laptop looks better than many of today's new models. I especially like the crosshatch pattern on the lid, as well as the fluid hinge. The screen's "glass" display is also a head-turner and looks spectacular when watching high-res movies. Oddly enough, my computer doesn't have the metallic finish around the keyboard like some Y530s. It is a strong, black plastic like the rest of the notebook.... Thank goodness, as the metallic finish is pretty ugly. The orange lighting complements the black color

The surround speaker system is freaking amazing. 4 speakers surrounding the keyboard (2 near the screen, one on each side of the keyboard) and one subwoofer on the bottom. The speakers are deep, not tinny like most laptops' speakers, and even have some bass. From Trivium to F.E.A.R to Avatar, the speakers produce sound like I've never heard on a 15' laptop.

My only issue so far was heat on the palmrest. As I found out, though, dust had been gathering inside of the internal fan ports. My home has lots of old carpet and a shedding dog... Recipe for disaster! I took the fan apart, which was very easy, and removed the thick layer of dust from the fan exit port. Now it runs at normal temperature.

I also got this laptop at a deeply discounted price from Lenovo ($750 w/free shipping), as they were discontinuing the Y530 for the Y550 back in early 2009. For the included hardware (top-of-the-line with a TV Tuner, Nvidia 9300M GS, Centrino 2, and 4 GB RAM), it was one of the best deals that I've ever been lucky enough to purchase.

I've owned my laptop for over 2 yrs now. I use it everyday and take it everywhere. I am giving it a 4 only because of the hinges that have now failed and it is a common problem with these laptops, but they are available. It has the old school look and build and is built like a tank, other than the hinge issue. I have dropped this laptop a few times and it still works. NEVER an issue with the hard drive or screen. I just bought a used one off of ebay "cheap" with a failed motherboard (due to a water spill) and I will use it for parts to fix mine. I like it and plan to fix it and keep it going!

This laptop tends to be one of the least expensive ones available, but seems to have all the capacity of many much more expensive computers.

It's main fault is its touch pad. The touch pad is not defined and so made for an unsatisfactory experience from the beginning. The control bar was also difficult to depress left/right. It was very unresponsive. Then, about a week after I bought the unit, the touch pad failed altogether. I was unable to use it to move the cursor. I was glad I had taken the vendor's advice and bought a wireless mouse which I immediately switched over to using. I suggest you automatically get a separate mouse with this unit.

This is a bit of an annoyance because the laptop only has three USB ports. With my printer in one and the add-on wireless mouse in another, I'm left with only one available port. But that's OK. You can always buy expansion ports if you have more devices you want to plug in.

The standard KWERTY keyboard keys are themselves responsive though, and it's generally a pleasure to type and compose on this machine. My only criticism the shift key and the "enter" key are juxtaposed so that it's easy to hit one when you want the other. The keyboard layout could have been designed a little better.

This Hewlett-Packard comes with a fair amount of bundled software in it, including a very serviceable version of Microsoft Word. The vendor tried to convince me that I would need to buy an extra, up-dated version of Microsoft Word for this computer, but that is not the case. I was also told that no software published prior to 2000 would work on this computer. Well, some will. So before you go to the expense of buying any new software for this Windows 7 unit, I suggest you thoroughly explore what is already included with it and what you can run on it from your old collection. You might be pleasantly surprised to find most of your favorite old programs from Windows '98 through Windows XP WILL run on this laptop.

The unit gets me onto the Internet speedily, without any need for upgrades to my equipment. It is also fairly quick and intuitive when it comes to setting it up and transferring files to. I was able to unpack it and get going with it on-line in less than an hour.

So overall, this model laptop seems to be an excellent value.

PROS:

-Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit runs flawlessly on the dual core processor.

-Graphics card is excellent and watching YouTube/DVD videos on full screen is smoothe, even with high definition.

-It's 3GB RAM is more than enough for normal use. The usage is usually in the 40% range with normal use, definitely a good thing.

-Has a stylish cover to it. (mine is blue, I'm not sure if that's standard or not).

CONS:

-THE KEYBOARD LAYOUT IS HORRIBLE! I repeat, HORRIBLE. I type at an average rate of 70-80WPM and this is by far the worst keyboard layout.

-Does not have a numeric keypad as on the side as most notebooks do.

-The shortcut keys available on the keyboard aren't significant and really should not have been placed there to begin with (i.e., quick launch to calculator, email, internet, etc.)

-Because of the keyboard, it's comfort rating is "pathetic" on my scale.

OVERALL:

Excellent choice, given the price and performance. The keyboard will take a LOT of getting used to, but eventually it won't be an issue. I'd highly recommend this product (G62-347NR).

I got this from Amazon under a clearance sale where it was apparently known that this PC was defective. It freezes up constantly as many other unhappy customers will testify. Took me too long to figure out it wasn't my software, so now I'm stuck with this piece of junk.

NEVER BUY ANY COMPUTER EQUIPMENT FROM HP, and since Amazon apparently knew they were pushing junk, I would also avoid that merchant as well.

I highly recommend you do NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy this laptop. If you look around at forums and such, you will find many issues with it being a low quality laptop. Ahead are just a few examples of customers complaining about freezing problems and crashing problems. Other customers complain about blue screens and mouse pad freezes. I have one myself, and I am extremely frustrated as this is my only computer to work with. Every minute or so, the computer will freeze for about 30 seconds and then come back. I have tried many things to fix it, all of them you may find in the following forum posts, but none have worked. Do NOT buy.

I bought this laptop from one sale a day. It looks well built, screen size is enormous. Screen is bright. Charge holds for more than 3 hours while working.

But the keyboard has issues. The space bar does not space unless you hit it in the center hard. I checked to see if anything was stuck below the space bar, but nothing I can see. All other keys are ok, but for some reason you cannot type without hitting the space bar multiple times and trust me you will not believe how challenging it is for normal users to type if the space bar does not do its thing with a normal tap. I have to go back and repeat spacing since all words jumble up. I am not able to see reviews of this issue or discussions. So I will wait to see if ASUS is willing to fix this for me.

Then the touch pad is also weird. This being Windows 8 and the touch pad is so sensitive, when I start typing my mail, I notice the screen jumping to random applications that are either open or trying to be invoked. I cannot put a finger on this issue because of the tiled nature of windows 8 and the new touch pad that is sensitive. Hence documenting just so you know I noticed that problem too.

When I reached out to One Sale a day support, they conveniently told me that this is covered by manufacturer warranty and so I can reach out to ASUS. ( It has been only 2 weeks since I bought this). I will see how that works.

Another issue is that this laptop is so big that it might not fit into many backpacks. So remember that if you want to lug this around while travelling it might be a challenge. But it still is a great looking screen and responsive laptop for this price point.
