Screen: My last laptop was a late 2011 macbook pro. Other reviews are saying that the screen is bad and some are saying it's good. Compared to the screen on the macbook it's worse. The screen isn't terrible but it isn't going to win any awards.

Keyboard: The keyboard layout is similar to the mac. The keys light up but don't change intensity. The backspace key doesn't quite fit right. Depending on the angle you type at you may notice it when typing.

Processing: I don't know why other reviews say this laptop is only for light workloads. This i5 processor in this laptop is fully capable of heavy workloads. It can run super pi 1 mb faster than an AMD FX-8320 desktop processor. On more realistic tests its about the same as the mobile AMD A10 processors. Power usage however is much lower for the i5 compared to either processor.

Graphics: The integrated graphics in the Ivy-Bridge processors is amazing. Its no graphics card but for the efficiency its perfect.

Sound: The beats audio isn't meant to blow you away. The main benefit is the sound card driver for beats audio is not the speakers itself. With beats audio the sound quality with headphones is great!

Build/Design: This laptop is built really well. HP did a great job on the design. It's small and lightweight while not feeling cheap or sacrificing on battery. (Actually battery life is around 5-6 hours depending on usage and after removing all of HP's bloatware) The black aluminum looks really cool as long as it's clean. This thing attracts shows smudges and lint more than anything I've ever seen.

To help the washed out look of the screen try the following:

1. Right click on the desktop

2. Select "Graphics Properties"

3. Display/Color Enhancement

4. Use the sliders to change:

a. Brightness 10

b. Contrast 45

c. Gamma 0.8

d. Saturation 5

5. Apply

This does reduce overall brightness but you will get much darker blacks and a wider range of color differences. Gradients appear much better and text is much more clear.

The fit/finish of the laptop is amazing. Very solid, reminds me of my Macbook Pro. Has all the ports I was looking for including gigabit Ethernet. (Excluded on the XPS 13 and why I choose HP) Boot times are the fastest I've seen in any laptop thanks to Windows 8 and the hybrid SSD drive. 10 seconds and your ready to launch applications.

So why only 3 stars? The Screen.... After you get over the lovely fit/finish and start the laptop your greeted to a screen with noticeable back-light bleed. Blacks appear grey and the viewing angle is extremely limited. This screen belongs on a $350 Black Friday special not an "Envy". If you can keep your angle just right the screen looks decent but having used far better screens on laptops 3-4 years older I was very disappointed. It's also worth noting the only thing inspired by the "Beats" logo is the paint. Expect below average sound from the built in speakers.

This is a very elegant and very useful for those who don't need a computer that performs heavy tasks and uses heavy programs. Windows 8 is complicated but it's matter of time for you to get used to it. This windows is really fast, actually when you turn it on it takes only 10-11 seconds to get ready for start using the computer. I agree with the other customer that says that there's no problem with the screen; despite it is a glossy screen the colors are so vivid and you can see it perfectly from any angle, it's quality is great not cheap as others said. The price was worth it, I would recommend it highly for students and people who needs it for light tasks. It's weigh is ridiculously light and I like the soft color red base it has. The beats audio is impressive for an audio system of a computer, it also has the option of configurate the audio for a best hearing experience. There's a concern I have is the response of the touch pad because not always senses when you click to open something or when clicking a button but you will get used to click a little more harder for it to response. In the other features I am more than happy with this computer. Also I don't like very much that it catches fingerprints very fast but this doesn't affect the real functionality of a computer.

To conclude, this computer has a great outer design, great beats audio, really light weigh and it's incredibly fast at everything. It has a few flaws but it doesn't affect the computer's performance. I recommend it!

I've searched for a couple of months, to find another slim and light laptop with equivalent power and options as this model, and nothing has equaled or surpassed this Envy 4 1130us. In short, it's the best value machine at this price point.

Just look up the Win 7 version of this model, here on Amazon (Envy 4 1030us), and you'll find that it is an identical machine, only with 2 gigs less ram, and it sells for $100+ more.

So let's get to the important facts about this machine.

POWER & SPEED.

The combination of the Intel i5's power and the SSD and 500 gig hard drive RAID array, along with the much improved Windows 8 mass storage controllers, makes this machine blistering fast. Bear in mind that just like any other brand or model of new laptop, it has to be tweaked to perform as it should (tweaking will have to be covered later or this review will be a mile long).

I repair and tweak computers, day in day out and this is the fastest one I've had my hands on, except a Windows 7, $1,300 Dell XPS laptop that had an Intel i7 and a big SSD. I don't have it next to me to compare, but that would be the only machine that may have equaled or surpassed this one for performance.

SCREEN.

The screen is fine. Those who are complaining about it are expecting more than you can get at this price point. If you'd like the image to be even crisper and sharper, there are a few adjustments that can be made. (I may add those details as a PS at the end)

CONSTRUCTION.

Those who complained about poor construction, must have received defective models. The construction of this model is nothing less than superb. The only complaint is that fingerprints stick to it and it means that you'll have to wipe it down everyday, with a damp cotton cloth. The brushed aluminum build is fantastic and makes for a very solid machine.

KEYBOARD.

Everybody has an opinion as to what constitutes the perfect keyboard, so all I can say is that it is clearly a superior keyboard and that having the backlit feature is huge, for those folks who are not real typists, and need to see the keys to be able to type properly.

TOUCHPAD.

If you understand that this touchpad is set to work as if it were part of a touchscreen, thus scrolling up becomes down and vice versa, then you'll quickly get used to it and will soon agree that it is one of the very best on the market.

WINDOWS 8,

For those who don't already know it, Win 8 can be made to look and function just like 7, by downloading Start Menu 8 from iobit, then disabling all the charms bars and hot corners. It's only natural that I/you/we would want it to work like 7, as this model doesn't have a touchscreen, so why in the world would we want to use Win 8's new touchscreen interface (often known as Metro apps). Other than some graphics differences, it's so identical to Win 7 after the tweak mentioned above, that to the untrained eye, you wouldn't even know that it wasn't a Win 7 machine.

BATTERY LIFE.

It's simply amazing. Right now, I'm at 84% remaining battery power and the time estimate is at 5 hours and 14 minutes. I could turn down the brightness, to squeeze out some more, but it is already good for 6 hours plus, set the way it is (don't forget that this machine is well tweaked, so brand new out of the box, the battery life won't be quite as good).

HEAT.

It can produce a minor amount of heat at the back where the air exhausts. Laying the sides on each one of my legs, is 100% comfortable on battery. If you have it plugged in and it's charging, it will get warmer and may be a wee bit uncomfortable.

This laptop must NOT be used on material like cloth, a bed, a towel, etc, that can block the air intake from the bottom. If you need to use it in such a location, prop it up a bit with something.

WIFI.

I have never seen a laptop with better reception, nor one that can download as fast. If I go to a given website to download a file with any of my other computers, they download at approx. half the speed than this one does. I haven't investigated why this is, but suffice to say that it is better than what is normally included in a laptop.

All the features have been mentioned, so there's no reason to go over them again.

It's a simple mathematical equation. Does this machine give you more than similar ones at this price point? YES!

Is it super fast? Darn right it is!

Is the battery life good? It's superb!

How good is the Wifi? Beyond your expectations!

Is it well built? It's fantastic!

Is it a good looking machine? It's as handsome a laptop as I have ever seen!

Would it satisfy any normal user? Absolutely!

Here are the settings that make for a sharper image on this laptop.

I found them somewhere on the internet and noted them down, then both my friend and I used them on our Ultrabooks (we both have the same machine) and we both feel that the results are excellent.

You may or may not agree and if they don't suit you, you can reset them back to their default settings.

Right click on the desktop and select "Graphics Properties".

In the subsequent window, select "Advanced Mode" then hit OK.

In the next windows, select "Color Enhancement", then set the Brightness to -20. the Contrast to 51 and the Gamma to 0.9 and leave the other two untouched.

You will find that the brightness is slightly diminished, but that the image is much more "real".

Everything is good except the screen. I'll not comment on other features because all of them function so far so good.

I have a HP G7 which screen has resolution 1600x900. So comparing with this (1366 x 768) I feel the Ultrabook is not better or even worse than the G7 regarding the screen. This Ultrabook is beautiful but the screen is disappointing. Currently $750 ultrabook is not as cheap as the others with better config but at the same price level.

The previous reviewer said the screen looks bleeding (too much red). It is true but the color can be calibrated (Personalize->Display->Calibrate Color). The color should have been calibrated properly when come out of factory. As he said the view angle is bad. I believe HP chose the cheapest screen on the market.

Update:

Comparing to other same kind of ultrabooks this design is attractive. Very good look&feel on real product.

What I disagree with the previous reviewer is that the beats audio is impressive. It is loud and has deep base although it is not a professional audio system which you cannot expect on a laptop.

The keyboard and touch panel are quite good quiet and responsive.

I recently purchased this laptop at a big-box store (price was lower) and I love it. It's a replacement for my 3-year old desktop, and I couldn't be happier. I run a lot of photo-editing software so I needed a system that could handle multiple large programs at once and this laptop doesn't flinch everything is smooth and seamless, the display is beautiful and the 10-digit keypad is a nice touch. The battery life is solid at 3.5 hours, too. No complaints!

My wife bought this for me at Christmas and I definitely have opinions on it. Experience level: Geeky =]

The screen is beautiful, and movies and such look great.

Performance was surprisingly slower than I would expect a 4 core processor to be, but it is running Win 7. It's possible some more RAM may help, or putting Win7 on a diet (preferred) would be in order.

Love the half a terabyte!

As I commented in another review, getting used to the offset keyboard and mouse took 5 weeks or so, but it's worth it. I assume they put the keypad in to fill the lower portion of the laptop. I do like the keypad, it's handy!

The worst thing they did was the mouse pad. It is a capacitive type that allows for pinching which I turned off a few days into it. Unfortunately it also makes the mouse movement erratic during normal use, and when the cover is closed and it's left on, the mouse does it's own thing. When I return I find many windows have been openedsometimes 20+, and it's dinging at me because Windows wants input and the mouse is still possessed. FAIL. Especially when you have it next to the bed.

I'm a skilled touch-typist and long-time laptop user. Bought this one a few days ago from a big-box store (lower price). Fingers kept hitting the wrong keys. Couldn't figure out why, until I realized I needed to move the laptop about 4" to the right, so that my head is in centered on the touchpad, not the center of the screen. I don't like this design.

I had an opportunity to use this laptop or attempted to. I was tasked with removing a suspected virus from this laptop which was thought to be causing BSOD on startup. Placed hard drive in another PC to scan for viruses. None found. Ran complete system recovery to return system back to factory default condition. System recovery ran to 100% and upon restart would BSOD before even making it into windows 7 pro. Replaced memory and hard drive with new. Ordered recovery CD's from manufacturer. Thought this has to work. Same results. I would not buy this laptop. Even with new memory, new hard drive and factory recovery CD's this system would not startup even on factory recovery completing to 100%. The only thing left is to send unit to Sony. This laptop either has poorly engineered cooling properties or is not truely x64 capable. I would avoid this laptop. Valueable advice...anytime you get a NEW laptop. Make your recovery CD's immediately and then run a complete system recovery to ensure the integrity of your new purchase. If a NEW laptop cannot function after running complete system recovery, it is not worth keeping.

I have this computer for just less than a month, so is not much I can say about it's reliability or some performance, but for this moment I love it: speed, keyboard, web cam, all auxiliary connection available .... But the only drawback I experience so far is sound, when you tune it all the way up, it is .... not great at all, and the "power" is a little bit lower than i was expected. But lets be serious, what can you expect from a build in speakers!?!?! If you really want to have a good sound, you should buy separate set of PC Speakers.

Today, I'd recommend this laptop to somebody else too.

We have owned this laptop just slightly over one year, the hard drive is fried. The Vaio laptop is inoperable. Sony will not offer to replace it with a refurbished model or try to repair it. It is no wonder we had to go to 3 different locations to find a store that was still open.

We have been faithful Sony customers, having purchased 2 home theater systems, a large LCD screen tv, and 3 computers, as well as countless other Sony products (including the original Sony "Discman." It's a shame to see what this company has become.

This is my ump-teenth Sony Vaio and I have loved them all. Not much left to say about laptops that has not already been said. Sony graphics are the best. This unit is lightweight and has a sleek design. If it is like my other Sonys, it will hold up for years to come.

For those of you interested in pure PC horsepower, look elsewhere. Sony laptops are for presentation and intense graphics and not for raw computing. I did load a SQL-Server 2008 app on this laptop and it performed fine, but most CPU intensive apps run a little slower on Sony than they do on Dell, HP and others.

I purchased this to be used like a netbook, except bigger and with all the benefits of a laptop. For $320 (Best Buy) you can't go wrong. For a light mobile laptop that is as quick as you need it to be and offers all the features a netbook doesn't, this is a perfect alternative. This will make a perfect laptop for a teen, college student or the person on the run. This isn't a Toshiba high end laptop, but for surfing the Internet, using Office and connecting it to my cable line and recording TV, this thing handles it all with no problems and does it fairly quickly. The graphics and sound quality is pretty good, and the 15" screen is perfect for watching TV. I am impressed and I am glad I came upon this opportunity instead of going with a netbook for just a bit more. This is a nice laptop and a steal for what I paid, even for the price offered on Amazon, but I recommend checking around (Best Buy on-line). You can't go wrong, Toshiba makes great products and from what I have seen in the week of using this, this is one of them.

I bought this computer three weeks ago from Best Buy for 349. I can't believe the value for the price. I love windows 7 -it is much quicker than vista and they have added some very nice features. All the MS Office programs load quick as well as any other program I have used. It comes preloaded with Norton Internet Security. I really hate it when they load programs to get you hooked for 30 days free and then remind you every hour that it is time to buy, however, Norton is a very good fit for this computer and it doesn't seem to eat up any processing speed running in the background. I'm going to wait another week then part with some hard earned money for the annual subscription. The only negative with this computer is that the cooling fan cycles on and off which can be annoying if you are working in a quiet area. It does it job, though and keeps the computer cool. Bottom line: Unless you are a power hungry gamer, you can't go wrong with this computer.

Well purchased a Toshiba Satellite for my son for Christmas and have disappointed since day one. Plugged it up and we get scrambled LCD screen with black blobs all over the place. I call Toshiba for advice and the first thing they say is this is covered under warranty. Seems they will not repair any screen related issues with there laptops. They said it was caused by abuse. I find this hard to believe since it was this way right out of the box and used for less than 3 days. No were in the warranty book does it say this is not covered. I ask for them to point this out to me and no one would answer my question. The kicker is they want $425 to repair a $400 computer. I will be returning this laptop and will avoid Toshiba like the black plague. I would suggest anyone considering a Toshiba call the warranty department first and ask them what does there warranty cover. Don't make the mistake I made.

I currently own this laptop and had it since November 2009. I purchased this laptop because my previous Dell computer broke. At time time I was attending a community college and needed a nice inexpensive computer. This laptop is a lil older than other laptops, but overall it's a solid machine. You get what you pay for with this laptop. This machine is great for web browsing, certain games, listening to music, play DVDs, typing papers, and storing files. This would be a great buy for a normal student or adult that just want a computer for the basic functions. I'm not sure how this computer compares to the other inexpensive computers, such as Compaq and Accer, sold at Walmart, but this computer isn't a bad buy. The down sides to this computer is that it can become heavy to carry around (although lighter than my Dell Laptop). It can run slowly if too many programs are running and it doesn't have a webcam (it didn't matter to me). The sound isn't as good as other computers such as MacBook. Today I wouldn't advise paying more than $250 for it from someone on Amazon or Craigslist--and that's if the laptop comes with everything (itunes, windows 8 upgrade, Windows office, etc). I recently purchased a MacBook Pro, but I still utilize my Toshiba to read ebook and study videos as I take notes on my MacBook.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This Sony VAIO Fit Series laptop happens to replace another Sony VAIO laptop that I previously owned and pretty much enjoyed using. That one was a red version (the /R rather than the /W, icy white version) of this Sony VAIO VPC-CW17FX/W. I had gotten that laptop back in late 2009 specifically because it had some features that made it somewhat more appropriate for gaming and/or for use as a portable media consumption device (the included Blu-ray drive, something that I must note that I did experience issues with as it would mysteriously not want to handle Blu-ray discs when I'd want to use them). I wound up passing that laptop on to a co-worker who has now passed it along to his former significant other. For her needs, it is still a fine device that will do everything that she'd want to do on it (browse the web, play games like Words with friends, etc.)

This particular VAIO Fit Series laptop is a nice enough device with some nice advances, but at the same time, perhaps a few areas of regression to comment about.

First up, I like the touchscreen, especially for use with Windows 8 which is very touchscreen friendly, if not downright touchscreen demanding. While it (Windows 8) can be used with a mouse and/or touchpad and a keyboard, there are just so many ways that using a touchscreen is much more efficient with Windows 8. That said, I must admit that the touchscreen also drives my OCD self a little crazy as the screen tends to get fingerprinted easily, making the display more cloudy/fuzzy than I would like. Considering that the touchscreen already makes things a little cloudy to begin with (not badly, but enough to notice), the added fingerprint oil smudges on the screen can be distracting.

I dislike that there's no Blu-ray drive built-in and find it a bit mystifying that Sony, the purveyors of, if not the downright pushers of, Blu-ray technology have opted to include just a DVD drive. The added cost to go with a Blu-ray drive, or even better to have included a Blu-ray RW drive in this laptop should have been minimal for Sony to have done. It makes me think all the more that Sony, as with other studio owners, just wants to push their consumers all the more toward streaming digital media. :-/

I also find myself disappointed that there's no Memory Stick PRO(tm) reader slot on this device. This was something my earlier laptop had and since I have a couple of Sony cameras that I've used that memory on, well, it would have been nice to have a reader for same on this laptop. I can use a USB adapter that I have for such purposes, but that requires using a USB port and having the card reader stick off to the side of the laptop. Not necessarily a "clean" solution.

Performance wise, this laptop is pretty nice. Its built-in Core i7 processor is plenty fast. The graphics performance is nothing to rave about, but is reasonable for typical usage. Even for lowered expectations in a game like the latest SimCity, it would be acceptable, though it would mean turning down some of the advanced graphics features in such a game.

The memory is already maxed out as shipped, with 8 GB of RAM the maximum for this device. That is another area where I wish that I could perhaps make changes here. My older VAIO had topped at the same level and that is now nearly 5 year old device. With thoughts of perhaps running VM's (Virtual Machines) on this device, well, more RAM would have been an area to make improvements in, but it just isn't in the cards for this machine, or at least not without limitations.

Disk capacity is plentiful with 1 TB of hard drive space built-in. For most users, that is more than should be needed. If someone did want to work with virtual machines and the like, I could see using up considerable portions of that disk space, but again, for more typical users the 1 TB that is included should be fine.

Wi-Fi performance has been quite reasonable for me. In my case, this laptop easily found both of the available Wi-Fi access points and networks and would happily operate on either even when sitting farther away than I might have expected other devices to be able to work from. For example, I have tablet devices and/or other laptops that just can't find the access points unless they are sitting much closer to the access points (which is why I have multiple APs in my home, basically one for either end of the home), but experienced none of those issues with this laptop.

The size of the unit is a bit bigger than I had originally expected when looking at the system specs, but not really that much bigger than the VAIO that I formerly had. Having the backlight available behind the keyboard is kind of neat, but as a touch typist, I don't necessarily need the visual clues that others might.

Having 4 USB ports, two of them USB 3.0, is nice as it seems that I'm always plugging something into those ports.

All told, this is a nice laptop. Not necessarily top of the line or gamer ready, but nice for most home users. It is stuck in the middle of a crowded marketplace when it comes to these devices, and the performance and other features are not necessarily enough to make it stand out.

It doesn't feature the lightweight and/or longer battery life features that would be found, as an example, in my ASUS X202E 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop which is more of an Ultrabook type device, and at 5+ pounds, well, it is actually relatively heavy by comparison. Especially in an era where tablet PCs are becoming more the rage. It is not a convertible device, doesn't flip the display, doesn't break into two pieces (the keyboard "dock" and the touchscreen device of a typical convertible device) and as such, well, again lands somewhat squarely in the middle of the marketplace with customers that will likely expect more.

If asked about recommending this device for purchase, I could easily do so, but I'd also want to ask the intended purchaser hard questions such as "what do you intend to use it for", "where do you intend to use it", and things like that which might make them think all the more about perhaps looking into a Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet or something of that ilk.

Oh, one minor complaint, but something that I think all laptop makers do (and I wish they wouldn't), comes up in the fact that this device includes Windows 8, but not Windows 8 Pro. I will be adding, eventually, the media center components to this device and doing so will require "upgrading" to Windows 8 Pro. Yet another opportunity to hand Microsoft more funds. Ugh. I'll also be looking to add Office to this device and will likely do so via subscription to Office Live. Ah, the fun of owning laptops and other computing devices.

The first machine came with a problem on the LCD screen a white line down the left part of the screen which was promptly exchanged without much hassle.

Now I am facing an issue with the intermittent wifi connection. I lose connection for a minute every now and then. I know it is not a router problem, because I check with another machine. After reinstalling wifi drivers, the problem seemed to go away, until the day before yesterday. I have sent the machine for a checkup and have not heard back from them. I will update the review once I hear back from them.

Instant start up. quite a fast machine (I have lots of files and pages on my browsers open, and the memory of this machine seems to handle it well.

Touchscreen is great. Though it takes some time to learn, and there are youtube help videos, once mastered, win8 does not seem to be a big deal.

the keyboard light is good and bad in low light it is wonderful, but once it is darker, the keyboard light reflects on the screen which is a nuisance.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program First, let me say that this laptop is gorgeous. I was pleasantly surprised how nice the white color looks on this laptop. The color is more of a Pearl white and looks very elegant and gives a very good impression at first glance. This device is plastic, and not the aluminum trim model. Still, the fit and finish is superb, and definitely Sony quality. The buttons are great quality and the backlit keyboard is stunning behind the white keys. The buttons have a great feel to them, and a nice, soft click. The screen is also of great quality. Very bright with good contrast ratio. The machine is a solid piece of hardware.

The i7 processor keeps up very well when multitasking, but can become QUICKLY bogged down when making multiple downloads. I was a little surprised that the machine slowed down as much as it did, but I feel this is more a function (or limitation) of the HDD than the processor. The fan runs very quiet and minimal heat is felt from the laptop, though it does heat up pretty fast. The touchscreen also works flawlessly.

There are a few important issues with the laptop that keep it from becoming a player, in my opinion. The main issue being the touch pad on the device. The pad does not register any clicks on the right side of the pad. It does, however, register scrolling, etc. At first, I thought the pad was designed this way, until I realized after using the laptop for an hour how frustrating it was to click on the touch pad and not get a response. I did all the necessary updates, including the bios update, and even tried to reinstall the touch pad software with no success. I called Sony, spent an hour on the phone with their technician, and received no help with the issue. I'd say about 75% of the touch pad works great. The right side of the pad did not work out of the box. Another issue is battery life. I'm getting about 2.5 hours at 50% brightness with a balanced power plan. I was expecting a bit more. The WIFI has been a bit sporadic, but lately it seems to have become a bit more stable.

I guess I was expecting a bit more from a Sony laptop that retails in the $800+ range. I recently purchased a mid range Aluminum laptop for my wife that is on par with this one for hundreds less, plus the quality controls were much better on her laptop. This laptop does not include a hybrid drive, which would help speed things up a bit. My wife's laptop has a hybrid drive. I think at this price point, you can find a much better laptop that will give you better performance out of the box.

UPDATE: After spending another hour on the phone with the Sony technician, I was asked to send the Vaio in for repair. The return process is very smooth and Sony pays for overnight shipping, as well. Thanks to Sony for the good service after the initial call, though it is always a little disappointing when you have to send in a brand new device for repair. But it does happen. I will have the laptop back in 10 business days, and will update this review if the issue is not corrected.

I was a bit unsure when I went to buy this computer, but now that I have it, I love it. Many of the complaints that I had read about, I googled them and found a solution for most of it and I'm really happy with this purchase. The touchscreen is awesome and I love Windows 8, yes it's confusing at first but along with the computer comes a little Windows 8 tutorial that shows you the basics. The backlit keyboard is not as bad as people say, its really helpful actualy. Also, you can fix the sensitivity of the trackpad so its not jumping all around & when people say that the right side of their trackpad doesn't work, its because that's your right clicker (the one that brings up the drop down menu)so you just have to get used to clicking on the left side when you want to select something, and if you can't get used to that, then just tap it, the touchscreen is great. I haven't had problems with my wifi, it's actually been working great. I'm super happy with my purchase, and if you have any questions about anything, you cant go wrong by googling it, or if you're thinking about buying it and haven't yet,comment on this post & ask whatever you're debating about so maybe I can help clarify.

p.s DataVision is a great company, the delivery got here sooner than expected. ALSO! I thought this was the aluminum model, but I'm really happy with the plastic model, it looks very sleek.

When I first received this computer I was fairly impressed with it. It is a very sleek computer with a modern design. It runs great and the touchscreen is very nice, but I would not recommend this laptop until the WIFI issue has been fixed.

The laptop has the worst wifi range of any device I own. My kindle fire has a longer range than the vaio 14 laptop. If im outside of 15-20ft of my router the laptop has 1-2 bars of connection in the same place where my older computer has full connection. This is outrageous for such a new computer. Unless you plan on leaving the Ethernet cable plugged in at all times DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP

I loved the look of this machine out of the box. It's thin, with a very large screen.

Overall this machine is a great laptop allowing me to keep my desktop off now since I purchased it. Even though my desktop is a high end gamming rig, this laptop has essentially replaced it. That being said, there are probably those of you who will not want to lug it around where ever you go. If you do, do purchase a laptop backpack as a brief case design even with one with a strap would tear into your shoulders. The battery life is annoyingly low, but is expected from a laptop with a large screen and discrete graphics card. If you want more battery life choose a laptop that has integrated graphics, but performance will be much lower. The only laptop out there that I have seen with performance and big screen, with an 8 hour battery life is a $3000 mac! Vista is no isssue here as the machine is perfectly capable of running it flawlessly. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ERRORS OR BLUESCREENS!!!!! The user who rated this machine with 1 star messed up his machine him self. He is obviosly a novice user. You only get bluescreens on computers due to user errors 99.999% of the time. I have had no issues at all with this notebook.

I ordered 2 of these laptops for my wife and I. The laptops came packaged very good, with no defects, and were delivered the next day after the order was placed. Both screens had no dead pixels what so ever and were perfect. All extra ports(useb, hdmi, ect) do not get in the way of each other. The laptops came with the hp mini-media remote, ac adapters, user guides, and pollishing cloths. Setup is a breese with HP's setup program. Do note that HP Games from wild tangent is much like a video game arcade, where you purchase tokens to play the games. 500 tokens a month for 6.99 per month. All antivirus software and office software is a trial version. I recommend unistalling the trial versions of office, hp wild tangent games(the games are not free!!!), norton(horrible, bloated, antivirus software), and the sling box software(uselesss without a slingbox for your tv). Free antivirus programs are out there.

I am giving it only 4 out of 5 due to the battery life. Otherwise you will not be disappointed. PC PitStop is a website that benchmarks computers, it ranked my system among laptops in the top 9% in the world, graphics got the top 3%.

Great Laptop Performance. Fast for all entertainment needs. Huge and fast hard-drive and good monitor resolution. The webcam's capturing capabilities are not as neat as in other HP's models but still works great with all Instant Messaging and VOIP networks as MSN and Skype.

Great graphic imprint. The downside for the finished materials look is that this plastic is in particular too shiny and has to be cleaned constantly to avoid smudgy appearance.

First, let me qualify by saying 1) My experience with the HP Pavilion dv7 might be a fluke, and 2) Amazon doesn't seem to sell my exact model number, so I'm injecting the review here, because HP deserves it. My specific laptop is closely related to the one advertised on this page.

Normally, I don't write a review at all, if the product really sucks my experience might be a fluke, or if it's a book I might have misunderstood the intent. But this laptop has been such an inconvenience, that a bad review seems like real justice.

The battery is too heavy & bulky. The laptop had to be sent back several times; the first time, they 'fixed' the motherboard, the third time they had to replace the motherboard. It still has problems if you try to work with only the battery (i.e., the A/C disconnected), you risk the laptop suddenly shutting down even when the battery is fully charged.

There are other problems as well, and frankly the memories of wasted hours are too painful to drudge up.

I can't say great things about HP support, either. Oh sure, they try to resolve things, they aren't impolite or anything (although sometimes the accent gets in the way, so who knows if they are polite or not). But there's just too much back and forth, for many problems that you end up resolving with Google searches in an eighth of the time.

One great benefit this laptop will give you it will train you to backup your computer fairly frequently (I use Acronis for backing up & restoring, and it's a godsend), because you never know when you will have to send it back to the shop.

It was a bad mistake, choosing an HP laptop based on the look and feel of the keyboard, especially when past experiences with Toshiba have always been positive.

Try another HP series; steer clear of the dv7's.

My wife bought this laptop last week. This laptop looks very good. The keyboard is slick. Touchpad is sensitive. The screen is bright. But I can not run some application like Photoshop fluently, because the RAM Memory is less. I can not open many Chrome tabs. Some time I have "not responsive" from windows. I purchased this laptop two days ago at Staples after returning another brand that I probably shouldn't have bought in the first place. I've always choose to buy HP because I'm comfortable with the functionality of the brand. This however is a step up from my 15.4" that I use on occasion. There's lots to love about this machine like the price for starters and the keyboard is very nicely designed and user friendly if you're not accustom to braille keys.

Obviously no machine is perfectly made, so here's a few of my pros and cons about the G7.

Pros: Beautiful 17.3" screen, the color literally jumps off the screen which makes watching movies and videos a blast.

Cons: If you're use to having the option of managing your touch pad from the keyboard section, be advised that this model doesn't have that option. The only way to do so would be through Device Manager. And oh there's a little circle thing on the touch pad, if you press it the touch pad is disabled but very pointless since you can't hold it and type.

Pros: I like to listen to music while working out, so it was very important to have something that didn't muffle when turned up to a high decibel which this machine definitely doesn't do. It's clear and clean and very easy to hear.

Overall as I said before this is a wonderful machine and a great buy. Couldn't ask for anything better for the price. Recommend to all those that are in the market for a great item.

After owning this laptop for a couple of months now, I feel safe in saying that this is an excellent computer that I am glad that I have. The price of this computer is another key aspect that makes this computer such an excellent deal. I have long been a user of HP computers; therefore, I think that I'm fairly qualified to attest to their reliability. If they were not reliable, I would not continue to purchase them.

Now to the HP g7 specifically. One of the first things to catch my eye, besides the price, was the Intel Core i3 CPU. I had always owned HP's with AMD processors as they seemed to be a little more affordable; however, this laptop had the same affordable price with an Intel processor. This interested me greatly as I had always heard of Intel's great reputation for their fine processors. Plus this processor is rated at around 2.5 GHz while most of my AMD's on laptops had been just below 2.0 GHz. So, I admit that I had phenomenal expectations for the speed and power of this computer. I'm sad to report that those expectations were not met by the Intel Core i3. This is only one of the negatives that I must state. To be fair though, it was a matter of expectations and not actual performance. The Intel processor does a fine job of handling any tasks that I throw it's way, I guess I was expecting a little more from Intel based on their reputation. So it is now my experience that the AMD processors are extremely comparable to the Intel processors in the HP's that I have owned. I guess that I should have known that since I have always had really good performance from my AMD processors. I say all of this to give an open and honest view of my experience with this computer. I say all of this not too necessarily sway anyone away from this laptop, but I say this in case others have heard of the Intel reputation over AMD's. Regarding this matter, I will restate that this processor has taken everything that I have thrown at it. An example of this is that I have on more than one occasion had image manipulation programs open along with Firefox 4.0 with about a dozen tabs open with graphic websites with Windows file handling programs open along with other media (iTunes) playing all at the same time. The Intel processor and 4 GBs of RAM handled all of this just fine.

Speaking of some of these other specs, the 4GBs of RAM is nice at this price range in my opinion. I also like the 500GBs Hard Drive. That is plenty of room even for someone like me who downloads lots of Amazon mp3s and takes and stores lots of pictures. I have found the Bluetooth feature to be useful with my smartphone. It is also my opinion that the screen really pops. It is a good size screen for a laptop with really good color in my opinion. Also in my opinion, the specs and feature set are really nice for this price range.

If you have not had Windows 7 yet, I have found it to be stable. Admittedly, I don't see too much difference from Vista. I am glad to have the latest version of Windows for all of the latest drivers and such. Just an FYI, Windows 7 is now up to SP 1. I'm not sure if that will be pre-installed on the computer or if you will have to download it. The laptop does have the Home Premium version of Windows 7. I consider this a must as the Home Premium comes ready for networking and much media usage in addition to the standards of Windows.

Lastly, this has been a solid performer for me in the couple of months that I have owned it. I have been really pleased with the price point. Since this laptop can be found at different price ranges, I'd like to share the price range I'm talking about. When I purchased my laptop from a retail outlet on sale, it was $550 and $600 after taxes. So basically I am talking about this laptop being in a nice price range around $600 and under as it is currently advertised with Amazon. In summary, I really like this laptop with the only disappointment being that the Intel did not live up to all the hype as I expected it to be incredibly better than the AMD's. Be that as it may, this laptop with the Intel processor performs just as well as other AMD's that I've owned. With all of that said, I find this laptop to be an excellent computer for the price range.

I had a Dell Latitude D610 from college that just died a couple of months ago after 6 years. I spent two weeks researching different laptops and eventually settled for the HP G72-B66US 17.3" Laptop until I went to a local store and found out the last one was sold! The sales rep suggested this 2011 model, which has very similar specs and replaces the 2010 HP G72-B66US 17.3" Laptop. I was skeptical about making the purchase, especially since this was not part of my research.

However, not only was it cheaper than the previous model, but it's also a huge improvement from the 2010 model. How so? The touch pad is not hard to use: the clicks are easy to push down, scrolling is easy with two fingers, and you can zoom in or out. I had always used a mouse b/c I'm not a huge touchpad fan, but this touchpad is great. The exterior has a nice glossy finish vs. the 2010 model which looked like a cheap plastic exterior. Everything else seems to be just like the way the 2010 model is described.

The only con is a relatively short battery life (2.5-3 hours), but compared to my old laptop where the battery lasted under an hour this is great! The fan is on the side of the computer, so you don't have to worry about your lap burning or that you'll get cancer down there (lol). This laptop is quiet and starts up easily and quickly.

Considering how big this laptop is, 6 pounds feels like nothing. It's lighter than smaller models that are a few years older. Speakers are average in quality, but can be turned up loud! And for laptops speakers, they are pretty good. Overall, I'm very happy with this model and would recommend it to someone who likes movies, youtube, sports, photography, some gaming, music, recording software, business organization, etc.

This is a good, solid machine.

The title of this review is also the reason why I took a star off, because F9 hasn't been the norm for BIOS settings to change the order of boot devices. A little label on the keyboard would be helpful. I just went through all the function keys to find this out (not even Google was helpful!--But now it will be :).

When the machine starts, press F9 and you can choose to boot from a CD if you like.

This machine doesn't come with much clutter, unless you think MS Office is one.

Initial battery life never impresses me, let's see how well it will stick to its multiple-hour promise a year from today. Battery is a problem for all computers. We need more technological advancement in this area.

Price is great for the performance. I don't think you can go wrong with this purchase.

I purchase computers for my company. I've purchased several laptops under $1,000, from Lenovo to Toshiba, from Sony to HPs and Dells. This is one of the best. Nice, sturdy keyboard (for its price range), decently quiet, good feel, snappy, overall a pleasure to use. Sure it's not a high-end Lenovo T series, or an Appple Macbook Pro, but it's well worth its price. Recommended.

I bought an HP Envy 15t (no touch screen, 4th gen i7 processor) direct from HP and I love it. The sales rep helped me make good choices to keep the cost down while giving me a perfectly usable PC. However, I was so unhappy with a small dopey feature that I was ready to send it back. The feature was the "touchpad" that indented rectangle below the keyboard that is supposed to replace a mouse. It was so very horrible that it was ruining my life that stupid indented rectangle. What the hell? Don't designers actually use these PCs or do they all use Macs? With the help of customer support, I enabled a hidden amazingly fantastic feature: now when I plug in a USB mouse, the whole damn touchpad turns into a cup holder. When I unplug the mouse, the touchpad comes back to life as a total piece of dogdoo.

Funny how a problem in a small component can render an otherwise wonderful PC almost useless. The problem, you wonder? I was forever unintentionally brushing the touchpad with the balls of my hands as I typed. At least that's what I suspect the problem to be. I never felt myself doing it but the cursor was always jumping around the page. With the touchpad disabled, I can now type complete sentences without checking to make sure that the cursor is still in place.

I would rate the HP Envy 15t a 1 of 5 with the touchpad enabled and a 4 of 5 with a mouse and disabled touchpad. If you buy it, invest a few bucks in a nice mouse.

The Envy 15t-j000 is a high end laptop made by Hewlett-Packard that offers fast processing power with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core I7, and with the upgraded graphics option, can handle almost any game on the market. This machine is a good alternative for gamers looking to have a more portable option than a desktop computer or a heavy gaming laptop. After owning this computer for three months I have encountered very few problems with the machine. The overall build quality seems very solid and reliable, something I would expect from an $800 computer. The one terabyte hard drive is more than enough memory for the average user and the excess hard drive space means that very little management of the hard drive is required, as most users will not fill the one terabyte hard drive in the life of the computer. I have only used 170 gigabytes of the 905 gigabytes of available storage and have installed most of the programs that I need or enjoy using. I have never been a fan of touchpads, however the touchpad on the Envy 15t-j000 had surprisingly smooth motion on the screen and quite responsive. While this computer runs very quickly and provides the performance I required while remaining portable, I do have a few issues with the device. The most aggravating thing about the machine is the lack of an optical drive. When purchasing the computed I did not even think to check if it came with one because it seemed like it should be standard, however this laptop does not include one. This is easily remedied by purchasing and external CD-ROM drive, however it is an inconvenience especially when taking the computer places. The lack of the option to downgrade to Windows 7 was disappointing however Hewlett-Packard did a good job with integrating their own start menu when in desktop mode, a feature windows 8 lacks. This allows you to use Windows 8 just like Windows 7 which makes up for the lack of the optional downgrade. Overall, the performance, build quality, and large hard drive make this computer a good and reliable purchase that I would recommend to users looking for performance on the go. I have been very pleased with the computer so far and look forward to discovering what else the machine has to offer.

Mostly the computer is a good buy. The problem is Windows 8. There is no media player in Windows 8. There are only a few close buttons available within the app. The START BUTTON is missing. The return to last page button does not work most of the time. You have to create a shutdown button on the desktop. So I would say that WINDOWS7 is superior to Windows8 and that is why I cannot recommend the purchase of this computer.
