As a writer for LowEndMac ( I know my Mac. I've had this comptuer for a few months now and absolutely love it! While it's not my main computer, I use it to take to class and around campus. Paired with an AirPort card it's awesome. For the price, this provides every I'd ever need. The small size is great to take around campus or anywhere, and everyone thinks it's so cute!

First thing I should mention: I bought this laptop at a spectacular sale price. I paid $729 for this machine with 640mb of RAM (maxed out) and an Airport card with it. I highly recommend that you do max it out. I played with the 128mb version of this in Compusa and I noticed it to be significantly slower. When maxed out, this machine will run significantly faster than my 1.67Ghz Windows XP desktop in any task you will throw at it. On top of that, the Mac OS is far superior to anything ever put out by Microsoft. It's stable, easy to use, it just works. I have OS X Panther on this and I highly recommend it. I could never live without Expose, Apples far superior answer to the PC bar at the bottom. For those who are not familiar with it, this new feature in Panther will allow you to push F9 on the keyboard and show every window that is open. It will show exactly what is happening in that window at the moment, meaning that if I were to have a video running on it, the video would play on the tiny window as I look for the window I want. I click the window and it goes back to normal, only with that window on top. VERY USEFUL.

Besides that, this machine is very well designed. The ports are on the side, no more reaching behind to plug it in. Its got a thick layer of plastic casing, yet is just over an inch thick. The 12 inch screen is amoung the clearest I've ever seen, and is suprisingly easy to use. The speakers are just okay, but you don't buy a laptop for speakers anyway. The snow colored design is absolutly beautiful, and is a nice plus. The screen is on a solid bar, not one of those flimsy PC hinges. This is the most solidly built, yet lightest, thinnest, most compact laptops I've ever owned or used. I have had several PC laptops before this one, and this is, by far, the best machine I have ever owned.

By the way, the battery life on this machine is, to sum it up in one word, unbelievable. I can get about 4 hours of battery life while watching VIDEOS on this, surfing the web I can get upwards of four and a half or more! The low power consumption of the G3 processor makes this an ultra-portable machine.

For those who are considering switching. Don't be discouraged by the OS right away. It is something you will need to get used to, but after a few days you will never know how you ever lived without it. I now go back to my PC and just absolutly despise it every second I use it. I have now gotten used to the Mac and enjoy it more than I ever did with my PC. You know what they say, once you've gone Mac, you don't ever go back.

Well, to sum it up, this machine is perfect. I have yet to come across any sort of flaw whatsoever. Mac has thought this thing through, their attention to detail is amazing. Everything down to the little hook that comes out just as you close the lid to lock it shut has been designed perfectly. This isn't something that has just been scrapped together by Dell or something, this is a powerful piece of computing genius that has been designed for people out to make the intelligent choice for their computing needs. If you're stupid, go the ways of the PC world and conform to the ways of Bill Gates If you're smart, buy a Mac, you won't regret it. I guarantee!

As a loyal sony user who owns TV/blueray player/Walkman made by sony, I had high hopes for this machine, which is great, but the touchpad really really sucks. It's so hard to click on anything that it's pretty much useless. I've tweak every possible mouse config settings, to no avail.

Of course, the problem is easily solved by purchasing an external USB mouse, I just wonder how could a giant like sony produce such a dumb design and tout it as an innovation? sometimes we just need things that work, if you innovate by breaking existing functionality, it's only gonna frustrate users.

and I love it. I have had many laptops, from just about every manufacturer, including HP / Compaq, Gateway, Apple, Dell, and Toshiba. I am hard on my laptops. I have high expectations for them... not only do I do basic computing on them, like web browsing and e-mail, but I also tend to play games on them. A lot.

This Vaio, even though it only has HD 3000 graphics, has run Guild Wars 2, Fallout New Vegas, World of Warcraft, and Skyrim very well. Granted, it will not perform like an i7 with 8 gigs of RAM backed up by a 1 gig Radeon HD 6770, but I maintain 30 fps on Guild Wars 2 in the larger battles.

Heat is rarely an issue. I have monitored the temperature of the laptop and it has reached a max. temp of 68 degrees Celsius thus far during heavy gaming.

The sleep ---> wake cycle is really fast, and I am happy with the battery life (~3 hours if I don't do anything crazy with it). I have gotten compliments on it (Mostly that it looks like a MacBook pro... At a fraction of the cost, LOL). The chiclet keyboard is very much like the keyboard on my old MBP, and I like it quite a lot. I can't speak to others' concerns about the trackpad as I always use a Micro USB wireless Darkfield mouse but the few times I have used the trackpad, it hasn't been something where I was like, "Oh man, this is horrible!" So... if a track pad is really that important to you, I guess you can look elsewhere?

Anyway, for the money, this is a solid performer that not only runs well, but also LOOKS good, and really, when it comes down to brass tacks... we all like a stylish product.

(4) Looks Gorgeous, Love the style

(5) Sounds good. I dont blast it, but music is good sound for me. wouldnt recommend it for musician. Very quiet machine and doesnt get hot in my lap.

Cons

(1) Might just be windows 7, but I keep getting pop-ups

(2) Comes with NO decent software and barely any Sony Software

(3) Start up time is nearly 1 Minute upon purchase.. hhhmmmm weird b/c I thought you were the competitor of MAC

Love the hardware, and have no major issues. Here is my take:

The laptop has great flexibility, but I use a sleeve to protect the keyboard when rotated as a tablet. Otherwise, the laptop and display positions are great, and in fact, these are how I typically use the tablet.

Looks great.

I have read complaints about the trackball, but this has been my favorite one so far.

No issues with responsiveness, but Windows 8 requires certain motions that I get different responses from, but I have only been using Windows 8 for 2 days, so I chalk it up to training on Windows itself.

Honestly, very fast, very responsive. No hangs in 2 days of intensive use.

Battery seems fine, and certainly more than 5, and possibly up to 8 hours continuous use.

Thought it might have had network issue, but our dual band router was behaving flaky, but I updated the network driver to the latest from Lenovo, and no issues since.

Paid $2000 from Lenovo directly, including seperate DVD burner ($80) and MS Office Pro ($350). Also, separately bought sleeve from Amazon site ($30), as well as mice (bought 2 to try, for spouse and self, $70)

No backlit keyboard, which is a drawback.

Really enjoying Windows 8, and am preferring the tablet UI, even from the laptop mode. Got up to speed quickly using some online resources. Find some app, even MS's are gorgous and useful

Very cool in use, and do not expect to need a cooling base, but will get a laptop base for spouse to use while reclining.

Windows 8 was tough but the computer is worth learning the new format. It is one of the top 5 ultra books in my opinion. I looked at most of them some had more USBs and additional input features, but the workmanship on this computer like the Think Pads shows it will hold up for years. It is a bit pricey but over time it pays for itself when the computer is built well. You can add a second hard drive which is very cool (check youtube). Cheers!

I have owned/used more than 4 of these computers. Every single one has had a major hardware failure within 6 months. This laptop is actually worse than HP's from a few years ago (if possible). The volume control doesn't even work. The case is flimsy and will crack easily. Hard drive fails and thrashes constantly. Screen resolution constantly reverting back to lowest setting. VOIP microphone only works when plugged directly into the laptop (won't work when plugged into the dock). Avoid this computer if you can.

A short while ago I purchased an Apple MacBook Pro A1286 from rbuska. I received the item expeditiously, however due to the description lacking some information, the this particular computer did not suit my needs as I do a great deal of research and needed something more powerful and with many more technical tools built in to the computer, hence I had to return it.

I am writing not about the item, as it arrived in pristine condition as well in perfect working order. I am however writing with regards to "rubshka" and the service he provided. I have never written a review before, let alone a "five star" for service. I am compelled to do so now.

This gentleman was highly concern regarding that my purchase met my needs and was quite supportive when told it had not due to my research. He took it upon himself to go the extra mile to assure that my needs were taken care of even through I had to return the computer. He searched out for me other venues as to assure that I may find what I needed. (even though it was not through his company). He e-mailed me several times regarding his findings and I eventually purchased one as a result of his recommendation from another vendor. This does not happen in the real world very often. His unique and concerned "customer care"manner, professionalism, understanding and compassion went well beyond the usual from my perspective. I would be most happy to do business with this gentleman again. I can assure you, he would be treating all his customers in the same manner. I am quite impressed in the quality of care. "five stars" plus for him!

I was almost sad to see it go as I dropped it off at UPS today for a refund. After about a week of troubleshooting with HP about why it would lock-up after two hours or so, they reported that it must have had defective hardware.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS (FINISH, HEAT, QUIETNESS)

When I first took it out of the box and powered it on, I loved it! The aluminum finish was the biggest plus for me. After an hour or so setting it up and installing (and uninstalling) software, the entire unit (save for the plastic heat outlet) was still cool to the touch. And it was incredibly quiet, too. I don't think I ever heard the fans wind up in the week that I had it. The low setting that they were on was hardly audible.

SCREEN

The screen was brilliant, though vertical viewing angles were unimpressive. Colors were great out of the box. I chose not to play with the ATI display settings. The 1600x900 resolution is a good choice for this screen size. I wouldn't go any lower, and while I would still go higher, that is only to satisfy my greed.

KEYBOARD

The keyboard had a generally positive feel to it. I didn't have time to get accustomed to the keyboard layout. I'm used to my HP dv4 which does not have a numberpad. And the fact that I used my dv4 for trouble-shooting purposes for the better part of the week didn't help. One of my favorite features, though, was the integrated action keys like you find on Macs. The function keys up top are, out of the box, primarily used for functions such as play/pause, volume up/down, brightness up/down etc. You don't need to press the fn key to access the functions. If this is undesirable, there is a toggle in the bios setup.

TOUCHPAD

The touchpad is a serious design problem for me, though I knew what I was getting into when I ordered it. I am pretty readily adaptable to keyboards and touchpads, so I figured it wouldn't be a problem. Truth be told, I wouldn't have a problem if I kept it. It was just an annoyance. Let me clarify: When I'm using the touchpad, I like to keep my index finger on the mouse button while my middle finger does the tracking. Since the touchpad is an entire unit, with the buttons integrated beneath the sensitive track pad, any movement of my index finger would send the cursor in a frenzy across the screen. It wouldn't take terribly long to get used to, though. And tapping the top-left corner twice disables or enables the touchpad, so accidentally moving the cursor when typing isn't a worry.

AUDIO

Sound quality was a big factor in choosing this laptop. It had a brand-name moniker (apparently well respected, so I'm told), so I figured it must have been something special.

Let me be clear up front: If you are looking for sound quality, YOU WILL NOT FIND IT HERE. The laptop speakers themselves sound good, with the built-in subwoofer carrying some of the lower frequencies you don't typically find in a notebook. But this does not mean the unit sounds good. There is some filter applied, which I could not find for the life of me, that was heavily COMPRESSING the sound (boosting the quiet sounds while ruthlessly drawing-back the loud sounds). It made listening to music with the on-board speakers literally painful at times (play a song by Atreyu with lots of cymbals and it will sound like you're underneath a helicopter from the dramatic volume cuts with each hit of a cymbal). I searched all over, and even reinstalled Windows and updated drivers, and nothing would fix the problem. On the other hand, sound through the minijack was great. The output was strong, though it seems the low-mids were boosted a little as compared to my dv4 with IDT HD audio.

This whole Beats thing though is a complete gimick. Out of the box, the bass and treble controls in Windows are set to full boost, which sounds like crap. By toggling the "Beats" feature (fn+b), it simply turns the bass all the way up (on), or all the way down (off). Not intuitive at all! Also, the control panel is the exact same as my dv4's IDT control panel, but with the Beats logo stamped in some places. I am much more pleased with the Altec Lansing setup on my HP dv4.

PERFORMANCE

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to test the performance of the laptop. I did have pretty high expectations, though, as I'm coming from (actually, currently typing on) an older AMD laptop with integrated graphics. I used to be pretty interested in computers and could tell you how certain components would perform, but over the years I lost touch with that side of me. Now days, I don't know how the AMD phenom stacks up. My understanding (confirmed by a few searches) is that AMD has gotten increasingly closer to Intel's competing processors, but is still a little behind in most regards. I'm guessing that ATI graphics processor is in the midrange as far as GPUs go. With its stay on my desk, it never felt underpowered, though I admittedly did nothing to truly exercise it. When purchasing, I felt that this laptop had an outstanding price-spec ratio, which helped me pull the trigger.

BATTERY LIFE

Another thing I never got to try. If it can live up to its claim of 7.5 hours, then that is very impressive for a laptop of this size (in my opinion). More time than I would ever need in one sitting. Truthfully, I don't doubt that number can be seen if settings are kept low and activity is kept reasonable.

PROS

stunning aluminum finish, nice screen, runs very cool and quiet, good featureset for the price

CONS

touchpad can be finicky, pathetic Beats audio, disc drive eject button can be challenging to press

I'll miss most the sleek and stylish aluminum finish. I'll forget the somewhat quirky touchpad. I'm glad to be away from the terrible Beats audio.

...

I know I didn't delve into as much as some would like, but due to my unit being defective, I spent most of my time focusing on getting it working rather than putting it through its paces. I hope my review can be of at least some value to most.

*Note: My dv7 being defective has no effect on my rating. All manufacturers have duds, and I'm still in a positive relationship with HP.

I received my computer this morning. It looked perfect out of the box. Short and easy set up, customized Windows 7 to my liking and tried some music first to try out the sound. The sound is much more clear and much louder than my little Sony Vaio. Typing is really nice on this HP pavilion. The touch pad has a nice consistency but the click button is rather on the firm side. It would be nice if it loosens up a little with use but so far that is the only thing I can even criticize. At 8+ pounds I don't think I will lug this around like I did with my 14inch Vaio. This is definitely a desktop replacement computer and the quality is as such. I imagine once I purchase a nice case for it I will be more likely to take it out. I'm anxious to try out the battery life. So, day one, I'm super happy with this purchase. If anything goes wrong I will be sure to pop in and comment. I was VERY hesitant to do such a large purchase online but so far, am not regretting it.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion dv7-4170us 17.3-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 7.5 Hours of

I like the computer. If is relatively fast, and it has lots of space on it. The monitor is large and clear. I love the fingerprint reader mostly for the novelty. I've had no real issues with performance of the computer itself, but the driver for the fingerprint reader was out-of-date when it arrived. I initially set the reader up, but within a couple of days it mysteriously stopped working. I had to do a little research to find out what I needed to do. I updated the driver, and now it works fine. The worst thing about this computer for me is that it is not left-hand friendly. There is a spot on the top left of the mousepad that completely turns the mouse off. Being left-handed, I am constantly hitting this area. According to tech support, there is no way to turn this feature off. The tech support person did offer to tell me how to turn the whole mouse off. (Wasn't that the problem to start with???) Had I known this, I am not sure that I would have purchased this computer. It does seem to me that there must certainly a better place to put the switch. I feel that it was poor planning and lack of consideration on the part of hp.

When I first received the computer, I had some problems with it crashing, loading CD reading cds. But after installing windows updates, most problems evaporated. I love the portability of this laptop, much lighter than last HP I have, and keyboard is easy to type on. Seems to work flawlessly most of the time and very quick. Only gripe I still have is the cd door closer, hard to open. Heard that from other reviewers also. Much too cheap hardware. Coming from HP should be better.

I have tried 3 laptops before this one. This is like a Cadillac compared to the others. I love the keyboard. The mouse-pad is not a problem. The display is bright and crisp. Movies are great!! Love the fingerprint reader. The sound is much better than my old unit, so I don't really have a problem with this one. Had never made this large a purchase online. but everything went like clockwork. HP Pavilion dv7-4170us 17.3-Inch Laptop PC Up to 7.5 Hours of Battery Life (Argento) Just really happy overall with this computer. Thanks Amazon. My old laptop (also an HP Pavilion) was about 7 years old, so maybe that;s why this one is such a pleasure. But there's a lot to be said for the fact that it lasted so long. I don't think you can go wrong with the value either. A laptop with the same features at a warehouse club is almost $200.00 more. And that's after the price increased on this one.

The one gripe I have is with Microsoft not HP. It's the starter editions of Word and Excel. I already bought an upgrade for 2007, now if I want Outlook I have to buy another. Can't use my old one. Enough boohoo.

About one week after I got this laptop, it started crashing and getting the Blue Screen of Death. I've had it for a month and a half now and it's been getting worse. I contacted the Sony representatives and they gave me a few ways to fix the problem. I hope it works, but I would rather have not gone through any problems at all. Also, the webcam is of horrible quality. I played around with the settings and it's still very grainy and captures almost no light. The mouse keeps freezing, too. I have to uninstall and then reinstall the driver for that. The outside of this laptop is beautiful, but the inside is clearly not. I hope Sony will help me out with all of my problems.

I bought this Laptop when it was the Amazon Deal of the Day for $599. I couldn't be happier with this purchase, especially at that ridiculously low price point. Instead of going over all the specs, I'll highlight some pros and cons of this laptop for potential buyers.

Pros:

Construction/Look: The chassis and chiclet keyboard (spill-resistant) feel real sturdy and of high-quality. The construction of this laptop doesn't have a cheap "plastic" feeling like some laptops out on the market.

Battery Life: The battery life on this 6-cell battery is unbelievable, especially for a 14' laptop. For the first few charge cycles, I've been able to consistently get over 7 hours of battery life surfing the web and playing music with headphones. The ecoUtility app really helps with prolonging battery life.

Intel WiDi capable: I really wanted a laptop with this capability so that I can wirelessly stream to my TV while working on my laptop. Note that you need to buy a WiDi adapter to connect to your TV/display (~$100).

Performance: The i5 processor coupled with 6GB of memory gives this laptop plenty of juice for 99% of computing activities.

SIZE of hard drive: 640GB of space is more than you'll probably even use.

Weight: 4.2 pounds and just about 1 inch thick makes this laptop pretty portable.

Optical Drive: This may not factor much for some people, but as more and more companies opt to remove optical drives from their laptops, it was nice to see Toshiba put in a full DVD burner/drive on this machine.

Connectivity: 1 USB 3.0 port AND capability for USB Sleep-and-Charge (charge stuff while laptop is off) AND an e-SATA/USB combo port AND an HDMI input is awesome!

Value: For the 600-800 price range for a 14 inch laptop, you'd struggle to find a laptop with this much under the hood.

Cons:

No Bluetooth: a tiny external USB dongle runs for about 10 bucks, but I wish Toshiba would have built-in a bluetooth receiver.

Screen: 1366 x 768 resolution (720p). Not bad by any means, but for a 14', It would have been nice to see a higher resolution offered.

Speakers: Sound can be a bit tinny at loud volumes. Noticably better than Portege R835 speakers though.

SPEED of hard drive: the 640GB hard drive only runs at 5400 rpm. I would have liked to see that be at 7200rpm or even a SSD drive, but all things considered, I can't complain much...just a nagging annoyance.

Bloatware/Volume of Apps: Toshiba seemed to have cut down on the total amount of bloatware they put on this machine but they have too many apps pre-installed on this machine for my liking so I ended up manually uninstalling some that I knew I would never use.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this laptop to anyone considering it at the $600-800 price point, as you'd be hard pressed to find significantly better deals. As another reviewer said, this is basically the 14 inch version of the Portege R835-P81 laptop (also sold on Amazon). That's just a smaller version (13.3' 3.2 lbs), but overall there are a LOT of similarities, even with the look. If you're in the market for a laptop with comparable specs but want something smaller, check that out. I hope this helps potential buyers out!

First let me tell you that this laptop not only looks good but it's also powerful, Thin and light weight.

I watched a bluray file and a 1080 mkv file at the same time with no stutter and with only 18% CPU load. My Quad core Desktop would start stuttering when I do this and cpu load goes to 100% (it's a Q6600 intel quad core cpu)

Had to instal java 64bit edition and directx runtime environment. Just make sure that whatever software you're instaling is 64bit compatible. had to increase color saturation to add more color but led display looks great. Tweaked touchpad settings a little bit to make it the way I like it. Theres an eco button that doubles your battery consumption to 10 hours with light use but dims the display brightness but you'll get used to it. Also it seems that pushing the eco button disables one core of the cpu. The computer wakes up instanly when you open the lid and resumes whatever it was doing. the wifi is very strong and picks up a lot of networks. Hard drive is easily accessible, only two screws. It runs very cool. I ran two 1080p bluray files at the same time through wifi N streaming from another computer with ease and no stutter. This laptop looks thiner in person and looks good. you can carry it with one hand from the corner and it doesn't bend like some do. you have esata, usb 3.0-2.0 combo. The speakers are loud, just make sure you enable loudness in audio properties and also select equalizer and increase the treble a little bit. No inputs in the back. when you rest your hands on the laptop wihile typing feels solid. Keyboard is very nice and I'm pretty picky when it comes to keyboards. After adjusting the color settings in the onboard video properties I watched the planet earth bluray streaming from my media server the display was crisp and clear with vivid colors like I was watching my 1080p led tv. Here's the color adjustments that I'm using, Saturation 10, contrast 1, brightness 0 and see the difference.

Update 6-5-12

if you do a lot of typing and word documents, I won't recommend this laptop because the cursor jumps all over the place while typing and you're constantly trying to get back to where you are to continue typing. It's not the way I type either because my fingers are away from the touch pad while typing. This is a major flaw with this laptop.

Pros:

Fast i5 processor

6 gigs of RAM, a spacious HDD

Long battery life (at least 4.5 hours on full blast; up to 7.5 hours if not used aggressively)

USB 3.0 (w/ sleep and charge)

HDD protection gizmo allegedly protects the hard drive from minor accidents

Cons:

Squishy keyboard beware if you're a regular touch typist!

The wireless antenna works only on the 2.4 GHz band even my 3-year old HP Pavilion can connect to the 5 GHz band! However, this laptop has far better reception, so it's not such a big deal. Just a tad disappointing.

Everything seems cheap the hinges creak, the plastic looks cheesy. When I lug it around closed, I'm afraid it will crack open.

A really silly choice of dedicated shortcut buttons (there are only two; one is for turning on the Eco mode why would I need to do this in a hurry? why? the other one switches on the WiDi; IMHO a mute + wifi antenna buttons would have made much more sense)

Despite all the negative remarks, the laptop gets the job done without breaking a sweat, and if it weren't for the horrid keyboard I'd have given it 4 stars.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite R845-S85 14.0-Inch LED Laptop - Graphite Blue

I payed a little extra for this computer thinking faster speed etc. compared to my 2 year old 15.6 inch toshiba we bought on sale from Best buy for $350. I was wrong. So far, there is absolutely no advantage compared to the lesser version from two years ago. It's not just the Core i5 processor either, as I bought my brother-in-law the HP equivalent (same processor, memory, speed etc)and that computer performs much better than this one. Something is just off with the design or this specific model as previously I have been happy with Toshiba products (why I kept this one and gave the HP as a gift). Battery life promised 10 hrs but I get 8 hours at best (when relatively inactive and only on the Eco mode where it shuts down every 30 seconds and the screen is dimmed to point where you can barely read). I get 3 hours of battery at most when online.

With an SSD Upgrade (I'd recommend Crucial 128 GB for around $160), this baby just flies.

Windows boot-up time is around 14 seconds, programs open almost instantly, and even programs that take up a few gigabytes install in seconds. By far the best laptop I've owned, comes to around $800 with the SSD upgrade. Besides you'll have a free 640 GB external slim hard drive for all your storage (movies, music, photos) purposes. (Don't forget to order an HDD enclosure for around $5-10)

The power usage while browsing with wireless on and brightness at half averages around 7 Watts, so I'd expect to get a good 8.5-9 hours of usage with the 66 Wh battery. (SSDs consume less power than HDDs)

Compared to various higher-end ultrabooks costing around $1200, the R845-S85 has a slightly better CPU, same Graphics (Intel HD 3000), better battery, and more ports (3xUSB, HDMI, VGA, ethernet). Besides the Crucial SSD also outperforms other brands in benchmark tests. OK, it's a pound heavier, quarter of an inch thicker, and doesn't have the "looks", but it's hundreds of dollars cheaper despite the higher performance&quality components and the build quality of Toshiba. (owned an Asus before buying this, which fell apart because of the cheap plastic case, poor DC Jack and bad build quality overall)

The only downside is that the GPU (Intel HD 3000), which won't allow new games with high settings. But then again, sub 14-inch notebooks almost never have dedicated graphics cards.

If you are looking for a portable and inexpensive powerhouse, this is the one to go with. Highly recommended.

It's a very nice computer with nice resolution. At first, I was put off by the fact that it contained Windows 8; however, I gave myself a chance to learn it, and now I think it's great!

I soon got Windows and Dell support for it, and am very satisfied.

I love this laptop.... it works so fast and takes a couple secs to boot up and shutting down takes less than 2 secs...

I am totally happy with my Dell laptop....I have gotten used to Windows 8 too...it's not to hard to figure out....infact I like it and now when i use my Windows 7 machine I tend to find myself slide to see what's to the other side only to remember it's not my new laptop..

The memory 1 TB is the bestest....love it...

Anyone thinking about this purchase go ahead make it.....it will be a great investment...

Dell has a long reputation of not being able to keep their machines cool. After just 3 months, my computer would overheat to the point of automatically shutting off. I've had to take it apart, pull the heat sink off the CPU, only to find that there was almost no thermal paste, and what was left had the consistency of dried out gum. Also, the heat sink makes an arc, passing from the CPU over the graphics card part of the motherboard. The heat from the CPU just gets passed on to the graphics card, so my GPU is always about 15 to 20 degrees hotter than the CPU, which gets up to 80 degrees with just internet browsing! Horrible design.

Also, the battery dies after 2 months. What's the point of having a laptop that you have to haul around the power cord or else it dies after 5 minutes?

Dell lies about battery life. They said it would last 6 hours light use, 4-5 hours moderate use, and 3 hours with heavy use like gaming. Lie. When I first bought it, it lasted 1 hour with heavy use and 2.5 hours with light use. Then, like I said, the battery completely died after 2 months.

Never buy a dell, period. This is not a one off situation. Search the internet about dell overheating and dell skimping on hardware. You'll find lots of results.

Also do a search on how horrible their customer service is.

This is a very lightweight, small netbook computer. It has received many positive reviews. The computer itself would rate 5 stars, however the high price would rate it a 1 star.

People, please compare prices. Amazon makes this very easy. If you want to spend this much money on an ASUS netbook, perhaps you should also look at the ASUS 1000-HE model.

well, it wasn't BLACK, it was WHITE, which is okay, i don't really care about color.

however it WAS advertised as "REFURBIISHED". i looked up Amazon's definition of 'Refurbished', and i don't think this product met the criteria. Specifically, the cable from the power supply was twisted into a dramatic pretzel shape throughout its entire length, and the outer jacketing had begun to disintegrate, revealing the ground braid around the inner conductor. Also, there was no original packaging with the product. Other than that, i didn't find any obvious defects. "Used, Fair condition, power cable shows some wear" would have been a more honest description.

I have this little netbook. Its great for basics like internet, video chat, internet radio, basic gaming, and email. The ssd is very small of 8 gig. Also with Win XP Home on it from the install CD it is very slow. More ram helps, but best to install Joli OS,Leeenix,Puppeee,Android X86, or Win XP Pro from install cd. I did this and now it flies with 1 gig of ram! Cause it is small,it is kinda hard to type on unless you have small hands. I love how small it is and easy to carry.

With external combo drive, you can watch DVD or burn CD's.

I use mine in my room just for basics.

I bought mine refurbished for $129,but just bought another used one for $89.

This was one of the first netbooks that actually worked with a trimmed down version of XP.

It was largely limited to CPU and power consumption though.

Played back upto regular DVD resolutions (720x512 pixels), or 480pix; when overclocked using EEECTL plays back some 720p video, though most is with lagging.

Qua games, most DX9 games on a low resolution can be played on it, and in a limited way Dosbox games can be played too.

The best about this netbook is it's blazing fast SSD,

The worst is it's small sized 8GB SSD.

This netbook needs an SSD and RAM upgrade.

A 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SODIMM ram stick works fine, Some 800Mhz SoDimm sticks I tried do hang up on them though (meaning freeze or crash)..

Aside from that, it still works great as a home theatre projector driver for standard DVD-quality video's and TV shows (at 800x600pix).

Also as bittorrent client, or personal webserver; or even as a basic midi router/samplebox!

But the device is largely outdated, and you constantly need to struggle with harddisk and ram space issues.

Thinkpad X201 12.1' 320GB

Long story short: this is an amazing computer with very few, forgivable, flaws

I spent a lot of time looking into the X201T because I'm someone who likes to buy computers rarely. The last computer I bought was a Thinkpad R61 in 2004, it did me well for six years and my wife uses it to this day. I have little doubt that the X201T will do the same.

The X201T is less a computer and more a collection of functions, which are made possible by the many ways to provide the computer with input. You have two mice (a red dot and a touchpad), two keyboards (a fantastic real one and one on the touch screen), a stylus (which is both a mouse and a keyboard), and your finger (the most intuitive way to operate Windows or use the internet, even if you're using the built-in keyboard). If you get a set of Bluetooth headphones/microphone you can even do a lot of things with your voice (the pre-installed speech recognition software works better than I expected), and you can control music from your ear. With such a wide range of options, interacting with the computer is smooth and natural.

Good thing too, because it can do so much. My work requires me to read and write, all the time, and the X201T is perfect for that. It is a great word processor all the more so because editing Word documents with the stylus is quicker and easier than the mouse/keyboard combination. Instead of keeping a pad of scratch paper around for ideas, I just run OneNote in tablet mode. If you work with pdf's, the X201T will become your library and your filing cabinet. Having used the tablet to surf the internet, I am now convinced that the web was not meant to be accessed with a mouse. The X201T has all the same functions as an iPad, which makes it an extraordinary media player I hook up my Bluetooth headphones and play the thing from my bag. If you want a television, the widescreen is actually pretty big and very bright (even without the extra brightness upgrade), and you can always hook it up to an external monitor. Of course, this thing destroys email, spreadsheets, and other normal computing tasks.

The computer isn't cheap and without a few accessories and upgrades it's not worth having. The docking station is a must, and Lenovo's tablet bag is critical if you want to work on the go. The multitouch option is a necessity; the 8-cell battery provides a little less power than I'd like (~ 5 hours of full functionality and about two more without internet or Bluetooth) but it's a heck of a lot better than the 4-cell battery; you'll want 4 GB of RAM (expandable to 8); and the 2.13 GHz processor is worth the investment. The upgraded warranty (the one that covers accidents) makes sense for me. That said, I was able to get all of this for about 2K in August 2010 sellers on eBay buy these packages in bulk and undercut the manufacturer.

A couple of relatively minor downsides: forget about gaming (though Halo 2 works well on an external monitor), Windows Media player sometimes skips when I have the computer in the tablet bag and I go up or down stairs, it sometimes gets hot on the bottom when it runs for a long time in tablet mode, and multitouch capability is not built seamlessly into Windows. (You can zoom in Word, but only in 10% increments, and many Windows options are too small to touch with your finger. That said, Windows 7 is very well suited for a touchscreen on the whole.)

Overall, I'm looking forward to the next six years with my new computer. I have no idea what we'll have by then, but I do know that the transition from notebook to tablet has reaffirmed my admiration of technological progress. The experience was similar to the one I had in 2004 when I moved from a desktop to a laptop. If you want to invest in a serious (and seriously fun) piece of technology, dump the iPad and pick up an X201T.

I bought this computer for college my senior year with the idea that I'd keep using it once I became an architect, as my old poor hp laptop (which served me well) was woefully past its prime. What attracted me to this computer was of course the tablet, but I also wanted one that was portable, and strong. My professor had a lenovo, so I looked into the brand. And after a lot of research (and agonizing over my decision) I decided to buy it.

It has worked beautifully.

The tablet works just as one would expect, the pressure sensitivity working well for photoshop and illustrator drawings. And with a few memory/ram upgrades I have used and abused this computer every day, in an environment where other students may be working on sanding a wooden model, or having pencil dust from drawings flying everywhere, and this computer keeps on going despite all that dust.

I've had the internet (3+ tabs), photoshop (easily multiple drawings at once), and word (for that 10 page paper) going on it at the same time. It starts to whine and heat up a bit, but does the job just as well. Oh, and google chat on it as well as of late, with additional screen capture software. that's 5 programs guys, and it does it just fine. In fact, I opened all of that up just now to make sure it still works... yup, going strong!

The graphics card SUCKS, NOT A GAMING COMPUTER which means I can't play most of the new games unless I put up with a lot of lag at lowest settings (starcraft 2 at lowest settings works ok, but that's already pushing it), but if I wanted a gaming computer I would have gotten one. for a computer used to sketch/draw/finalize drawings this is perfect. The speakes are also underneath the laptop and not of great quality, but still louder than my roommate's macs and with headphones it's not a problem.

Overall, 5 out of 5, does everything I want it to and more. I'm not sure why so many people here complain about the pen, but this thing is a breeze to draw with, and it has yet to disappoint. I bought this computer hoping it would last me 4 years (otherwise the investment wouldn't be worth it for me) but it looks like it will easily last me 6.

I bought this computer for "inking", using a stylus to write as one would write on paper.

After doing some research, I narrowed my options down to this "high-end" machine, and "lower-end" machines which were literally less than half the price.

Eventually, due to my good experience with Thinkpad (back when it was IBM Thinkpad) and due to what I read about the Wacom digitizer technology integrated into in this product, I favored this more expensive option.

Some of my experience with this product:

The digitizer feature (used for "inking") is inaccurate, and is almost useless in some parts of the screen. According to Lenovo, there is some driver from Wacom to fix this. But had Lenovo's technicians tried this fix themselves, they would know that it is incompatible with the X201t. This problem is not limited to my machine: it has been observe in at least two machines of this model, but so far Lenovo does not seem to share my concern about this issue.

Lenovo's preloaded software seems to take a lot of memory and slow down my computer. For example, the password manager slows down access to password protected websites. Furthermore, Lenovo's software apparently disables some useful networking functionality of windows 7. One might find "Start-> Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program" useful.

Finally, let's just say that the Lenovo's support for the Thinkpad is not what I expected on any parameter. Fortunately, windows 7 reinstalls relatively fast, so I could undo the damage that bad advice did to my machine. Unfortunately, The tales of Lenovo support's telephone switch are beyond the scope of this review.

Update: some more details for people who asked:

The pressure sensitivity problems:

When you try to write using the pen (for example in Office OneNote), the "ink" turns up in the wrong place, shifted from the actual position of the pen. This shift is different in different parts of the screen. It does not appear in the other side of the screen, but it makes the inking difficult.

In addition, in some parts of the screen, the inking resolution is lower, things just don't look sharp.

The Driver:

Having installed the Wacom driver several times, I can say that it causes a worse problem: when the computer is in tablet mode, you put the pen in one part of the screen and the cursor shows up in another. It seems like the Wacom driver wasn't designed for this machine. Lenovo support tells you to install it, they must have never tried it. I ended up reinstalling my machine (more than once).

Truth?

Indeed this seems like a crazy story about what is supposed to be a high end tablet computer. Those who wondered must be right, those of us who got what is supposed to be a productivity beast really have nothing better to do with our time than spend hours trying to get through Lenovo's telephone switch without it hanging up on us, just to explain the problem yet another time, just to be told to install the Wacom incompatible driver again and call back if it does not work.

Update: Memory:

The 2GB that come with this computer are really not enough (probably because of the Lenovo software that come with it). Extra memory speeds up the computer considerably.

Sleep mode:

For some reason the X201t takes a lot of time to wake up from sleep mode (compared to a 3 years old laptop with Win7). This turns up to be a nuisance when you try to use this computer as a notebook.

Jan 2011 Update:

To my understanding, Lenovo knows that there is an accuracy problem in some areas of the screen in this model. Since some areas of the screen are ok, they don't plan to fix the problem.

Sounds crazy, I know.

Beware of Lenovo quality.

May 2011: Tip

You know how your Lenovo shuts down unexpectedly? It turns out that Lenovo forgot that CPUs need cooling. Assuming that you don't live in liquid nitrogen environment: set your processor speed to low.

Thought you paid for a fast processor? More like you bought a fancy intel sticker for your computer (That sticker wears off too).

Consider the new Asus tablets (eee Slate) before you decide to buy computer. If I were buying a tablet PC now, that's what I would get.

June 2011: update

The integrated camera goes offline very often. After a year of using this machine, the camera now goes offline very often. I had to get an external camera to replace the built in one.

Honest reviews on Thinkpad X201 12.1" 320GB

Lenovo is selling this laptop without proper driver support. And they don't seem to care whatsoever to fix the issue. Search the internet yourself and see; search for "x201 pressure" and see for yourself that many people have had issues with the pen functionality (for over a year now!) and how Lenovo has failed to provide an answer, much less a working software driver. I called their customer support under warranty, and their response was "Your best bet is to search on google to see if anyone was able to resolve this issue"!!!! Great customer service Lenovo!

There are many issues I've experienced depending on what software driver I've installed: pen stops working after the computer comes out of standby; pen is recognized as a mouse device and handwriting recognition etc won't work; pressure sensitivity and touch don't work together (if your screen has the multitouch option), older drivers are terrible at calibration (where you touch on the screen and where you see the pointer are 5mm off depending on which corner of the screen you press, and this is NOT fixable by recalibrating the device); pen loses its smoothness on older drivers and everything you write/draw looks rather blocky.

I'm giving it a 1/5 star because of pen functionality and customer service; everything else is great about it, but most people who spend extra money to buy a tablet expect the pen to actually work; this doesn't. If you sketch/draw, you're better off buying a Wacom USB digitizer (this tablet's screen is made by Wacom too but after contacting Wacom, they told me that Lenovo is responsible for putting together a proper driver package). If you expect to use the pen in programs such as Photoshop, corel Painter, SketchPad etc, don't bother buying this.

From the get-go this computer has not been worth what I paid for it. It has always had ongoing issues with the network card periodically shutting off which is an enormous pain when you need to convert out of tablet mode to turn it back on. The absolute worst thing is the customer support from Lenovo. I was disgusted that I couldn't even get someone to tell me the part number for a broken part (the plastic latch) since my computer was no longer under warranty. The individual claimed it was company policy not to provide information to someone with an expired warranty. I have bought many Lenovo products in the past but I will be moving onto other brands for any future purchases.
