I purchased the newest version (Early 2013) which had the upgrade to 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD.

The notebook is extremely fast. Computer seems solid, boots in 10-15 seconds from off, sleep to ready in 4-5 seconds. It opens programs in no time flat. It is not light as an air book, but still defiantly lighter than previous models. The screen is great, bright, and responsive. With heavy use I get about 5-5 1/2 hours of use on the battery.

Some peoples complaints are the new power adapter, I will agree with them, the new adapter sticks out further and gets knocked off a lot. Not having a dvd drive, not a big deal...I dont think i've used a dvd or cd in a computer in a few years! If I need to I will just have to purchase the external.

I've never owned my own laptop (sure, I've been provided company laptops before but never actually had my own), and I'd just spent a lot of money on house repairs and I felt like I needed to get myself a little something. OK, a BIG something, but I'll be damned if it wasn't worth it. This is a marvelous device. Literally within two minutes of setting it up, I got an iMessage on the laptop which contained a video of my nephew which I clicked on and it started playing. I had to check around for cameras because I felt like I was in an Apple commercial. It just works. I really have nothing else I can say about it other than if you're in the market for a laptop and you can afford it, you might as well splurge. You won't be disappointed.

There was one little annoyance, though, which I thought was a problem at first but now that I know it's normal I guess I'm OK with it, and that is when the laptop wakes up from hibernation, sometimes it takes several seconds until it will let you enter your password and start using it. For that time period it looks as if it's just locked up. After some research it turns out this is because it saves everything in memory to the hard drive and the transfer of that information back to memory when waking up can take several seconds depending on what all it has to transfer. So, no big deal, I guess.

I've been interested in IOS development for years (I've been a software engineer for over a decade). I finally buckled down & purchased a macbook pro, even though it's incredibly expensive by my standards. I purchased my macbook pro directly from Apple, but I thought I would go ahead & leave a review here on Amazon anyway.

Here's my thoughts on this device:

Pros

-it's very thin / sleek. everything is metal

-it's so thin it can't include a DVD / Blue-Ray (I had to get a super-drive for this)

-it's minimalistic; it has no number-pad, the keyboard is centered

-the battery life is amazing (vs other laptops I have used)

-if you're coming from linux or windows, you'll be amazed at how good the sleep function is (being able to close the laptop / open it & have it back running within a few seconds is incredibly convenient).

-the wireless seems to run faster than it does on my other notebooks

-i got a time-machine time-capsule / airport extreme -the automatic hourly / daily backups are convenient

-the retina display is amazing

-the power of this machine is amazing for an ultrabook / i.e. for such a thin device, it's amazing that you can get near-desktop power

Cons

-it's expensive, but i got apple care. only they can support the device, so i went ahead & got their support

everything on the device including the ram / flash storage, etc is soldered / glued in place. That means you can't upgrade this device, and this also means it's very difficult to repair

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook Pro ME665LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display

This is a fantastic laptop -very similar to MBA in feel but much more powerful. However, if you are a Windows 7 user via bootcamp like me, this Retina Display version may not be the best choice (ie you may want to choose the regular MacBook Pro instead). The maximum resolution of 2880 x 1800 will make everything in Windows 7 look tiny. You can try to blow the DPI resolution from 100% to 150% or even 200%, but if you do, things will not look perfect -ie certain things will look too big, certain things too small (relatively), certain pop-up windows have cut-off images, certain programs have cut-off menus, certain browser pages will have messed-up paragraphs etc. You can try the browser view enlargement but it still is a hassle and imperfect. The best way to fix this is reducing the display resolution to 1440 x 900 (ie making the pixel count a uniform half of the maximum). Now everything will look perfectly aligned in perfect proportions but now you are defeating the whole purpose of having bought the gorgeous 2880 x 1800 Retina Display (and paid 3 times normal laptop for that). If you reduce the resolution anywhere from the maximum of 2880 x 1800, you will see the screen dull, fuzzy and smeared -much more so than laptops with originally lower maximum resolutions.

As for Windows 8, I have not tried and I do not know. I would appreciate if someone who did let me know if it would work at 2880 x 1800 without the need to blow up the DPI resolution. If so, I will switch to Windows 8.

This is something you will not see in the beautiful world of "demos" displayed in your local Apple stores since they will only have Mac OSX on these computers. But many people use these machines for Windows as well in the real world, and in so doing the "wow" factor will be severely undermined. I just wanted to warn you, since I am already regretting my decision. Plus the regular MacBook Pro is easily expandable and upgradable; this is much harder since everything has been soldered into the motherboard including the ram and the SSD. I am now using this machine at 1440 x 900, hardly a Retina resolution. Dear Apple, if you see this, please save us the Window 7 users by giving us an update patch.

Having said all this, since the original purpose (presumably) of this machine is for OSX, I am giving it five stars.

This is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. A 2.7GHz quad-core processor, 16GB RAM and (I opted cheap) 256GB flash storage makes for the fastest, smoothest computing experience I've ever seen! The design is superb, materials are by far the best in any computer, and the overall package blew me away. I've had powerbooks and macbook pros, but this is a whole new level. I love all the trackpad gestures, it makes operating the laptop very intuitive and easy. The display is incredible I can't wait to get photoshop and final cut up and running! No, it doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive and I'm glad it doesn't! Besides, you can get a usb one for pennies on the dollar now if you really need to have a physical disc (I have one lying around that I haven't used in ages). Yes, it's expensive, but I honestly don't foresee ever having to buy another laptop! I'm sure at some point I'll replace the flash memory, but maybe 6-7 years down the road, and 16GB RAM will hold me over forever!

Love the hardware, and have no major issues. Here is my take:

The laptop has great flexibility, but I use a sleeve to protect the keyboard when rotated as a tablet. Otherwise, the laptop and display positions are great, and in fact, these are how I typically use the tablet.

Looks great.

I have read complaints about the trackball, but this has been my favorite one so far.

No issues with responsiveness, but Windows 8 requires certain motions that I get different responses from, but I have only been using Windows 8 for 2 days, so I chalk it up to training on Windows itself.

Honestly, very fast, very responsive. No hangs in 2 days of intensive use.

Battery seems fine, and certainly more than 5, and possibly up to 8 hours continuous use.

Thought it might have had network issue, but our dual band router was behaving flaky, but I updated the network driver to the latest from Lenovo, and no issues since.

Paid $2000 from Lenovo directly, including seperate DVD burner ($80) and MS Office Pro ($350). Also, separately bought sleeve from Amazon site ($30), as well as mice (bought 2 to try, for spouse and self, $70)

No backlit keyboard, which is a drawback.

Really enjoying Windows 8, and am preferring the tablet UI, even from the laptop mode. Got up to speed quickly using some online resources. Find some app, even MS's are gorgous and useful

Very cool in use, and do not expect to need a cooling base, but will get a laptop base for spouse to use while reclining.

Windows 8 was tough but the computer is worth learning the new format. It is one of the top 5 ultra books in my opinion. I looked at most of them some had more USBs and additional input features, but the workmanship on this computer like the Think Pads shows it will hold up for years. It is a bit pricey but over time it pays for itself when the computer is built well. You can add a second hard drive which is very cool (check youtube). Cheers!

I've had this laptop for 4 months. The build quality is pretty good and the screen is bright and vivid. Has a decent Radeon HD 6xxx series GPU and runs linux well.

My *biggest* complaint is while the laptop offers lots of physical room for expandability, HP has locked down the BIOS so no wireless cards or other upgrades can be made to the machine. Inserting any other mini PCIe upgrades to the machine results in the bios complaining at boot about a "unapproved upgrade" and locking.

Had lots of potential, but the lack of upgradability is a game killer.

I've had my laptop for a couple of weeks now and I am very impressed with the speed and capabilities that it has to offer. The graphics are awesome!!! The Windows 7 program that it comes with is also very easy and straight-forward. I'm really loving this. I would recommend this product. For the price it can't be beat.

I've hand this laptop for over a year now and its been exceptional. I use it as my secondary machine for when I need a larger screen to collaborate with others in meetings. I also use it quite a bit in my office. In spite of it being an A4 all my applications run snappy.

This week I upgraded to Windows 8 without any issues. I did use HP Support Assistant software to ensure that all the proper drivers were downloaded.

I like the imprinted touchpad quite a bit as well as the ability to turn it off with a double-tap when using a mouse.

I would like a firmer keyboard but I'm able to type fine on this one.

I have been using this laptop for the past 6 months.

+s:

Extremely good screen (you can't find this quality screen in many cheap laptops. It does not have the regular "mesh" pattern of other cheap laptops)

Very well balanced performance. Not very fast for intense calculations, but I can do almost anything with it. It will handle it, but with a bit of patience.

17 inch screen is wonderful for multitaskin (excel, word, paint, gimp, matlab etc all open at the same time)

-s: feels not very durable (plastic feeling). Won't dare to drop it.

fan noise (specially when firefox and opera run at the same time)

Not the fastest cpu. But having a nice cheap 17" system needs some sacrifices.

tmouse-pad is ok but scroll-down/up 2 fingers gesture is not easy in practice.

Unlike Dell, HP does not send a Windows installation cd. So if necessary, I will need to use Dell's cd to install a fresh Windows!

All in all, I can't complain about this considering the price. It is well worth more than the price at the time of purchase (~ $380). Did I mention how perfect is the screen?!

Have been shopping for a new laptop for a while and decided to choose this instead of the A500. It costs a couple hundred more but has all the features that I need and want. The big selling point for me is the modern and sleek style. It is beautiful to look at and not chunky like the A500 with the extra number key pad that I do not use. Greater mobility with the 14" backlit led HD screen and a better Intel Core2 duo P7350 processor. The 400 GB hard drive that I can carry everywhere and no need to bring an extra storage device. The build in 3D sensing is a plus so if you drop your labtop the hard drive is protected. The backlit keyboard is really cool and the touchpad also have multi-function. The touchpad looks small but it is the same size as my 14" IBM thinkpad T43 so it works okay with me. The multi-function touchpad is easy to use and you seldom need to use the click bottom. All you need is slightly move your fingers across the touchpad and slightly tab on the touchpad instead of clicking the left button. It also come with the extra 12 cell battery for extended use compare to the standard 6 cell and it does not extend outside the labtop like others. The harman kardon speakers is also a great value and sounds great. All these worth the extra couple of hundred dollars. I tried to customize the same build at toshiba and it cost a lot more than this and Amazon ship free and tax free and no recycling charge so it is a very good buy. The fingerprints and dirt is easy to see and clean with a wipe after each use and it is not that bad to keep your labtop sanitize especially if you have multiple users to spread germs around.

The labtop come with a few bloatware and easy to remove using windows uninstaller. Would recommend to install a good registry cleaner and defragmenter free ware to optimze your labtop after the uninstall. The Window Vista Premium 64 bit is easy to use bur in my opinion still runs slow even with the 4 GB of ram and the newer Intel processors. You definitely need to remove the extra bloatware to lighten the load. I am looking forward to the free upgrade to Window 7 to make this work better. The RAM is expandable to 8GB so it is a plus for upgrade when the RAM gets cheaper in the future. I just upgraded and double the RAM of my 4 year old IBM thinkpad and it runs a lot faster than before with Window XP Pro.

I highly recommend this Toshiba mobile labtop for good looks, mobility and usability in this price range. It does not come with bluetooth but I am planning to get a bluetooth adaptor and it is very inexpensive. Overall, I am very happy with this labtop. I am glad I got this last week because I saw the price increase already.

I did a lot of research on different brands and configurations. I was all set to buy a Toshiba (with an ugly chasis) for its functionality at a big box store when I came to Amazon. This laptop had all the configurations I was looking for at the same price. My only complaint is that I wish it had more usb ports and built in blue tooth. But I added a usb blue tooth dongle and it works fine (other than tying up one of my limited usb ports). The biggest feature for me was that it came standard with a 12 cell battery. Lifts up the back just slightly but actually makes the unit easier to type on because of the angle.

Fast shipping, secure packing, and overall great value for the money I spent. Thanks!

I was very dissapointed that the battery life was not as advertised. It was advertised in all the stores to have a battery life of 8 hours. When I called Toshiba, They said they were not responsible for that advertisement. After fully charging the battery I get a little over 5 hours of battery life instead of 8 hours. When I told the toshiba representative I wanted to return the product and get my money back he said he would have somebody call me to arrange this. He took down my number but nobody ever called.

First, please note that I'm reviewing the actual computer and not any vendor nor the manufacturer's customer service.

Thinkpads, generally in my experience have by far the best laptop keyboards I've used. This is my fifth (at least) Thinkpad and my second X series (previous was X60). I have found them all to be remarkably reliable with excellent ergonomics. I especially love small touches, like the little mouse in the center of the keyboard (looks like a pencil eraser). Thinkpad seems to have the only truly effective implementation compared to other I've tried such as Toshiba. Also 3 USB ports. Nice. VERY lightweight, speedy enough. I LIKE that they did not put a cd/dvd drive in this unit. I'd rather use external given how infrequently I need it. X200 has built-in camera I still have not figured out how to turn it off so careful with your attire while surfing Facebook y'all!

So I am thrilled with this unit, loved my X60 for the 2+ years that I had it, and the T series before that. These things seem designed for "road warriors" like me.

Also be sure to get the small travelers A/C adaptor that Lenovo sells for these. I think I paid $35 for mine. Nice.

I have the x200 with extended life battery and 2.4 ghz processor widows 7. This is an amzing little machine. It's built like a tank, and the battery life is incredible. I get about 10 hours!! IBM/Lenovo has been building workhorses for business use for years. They know what they are doing.

Best Deals for Lenovo Thinkpad X200 12.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.5 Hours of

The other two reviews that gave it a low rating had nothing to do with the laptop. It was their experiences that were the issue not the laptop itself. If you turned down this laptop based on those reviews you would be missing out on a very nice machine.

This is an excellent laptop and I highly recommend it. I've had mine for a couple of years now and have never had a problem with it. I have upgraded to Win7 since then and have a total of 4GB RAM (which is the max for this laptop hardware wise).

I am in IT field and need a reliable, ultra-portable laptop that has plenty of 'horse-power' to run several applications that I rely on. The X200 fits that perfectly.

I am fairly rough on my laptop and yet it still runs without a problem.

Pros: Light-weight, portable, great battery life, reliable, nice features (roll cage to protect against bumps, spill-resistant keyboard), price is just right, Lenovo's website for downloads (drivers and software) is always up to date

Cons: The finish on the top of it is not that durable. The lid on mine got scratched up a little bit. I ended up buying a 'skin' to go on the top of it to hide the scuff marks.

Honest reviews on Lenovo Thinkpad X200 12.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.5 Hours of

I didn't get my X200 off of Amazon, but rather got it used a couple of months ago... mine's sitting around the same specifications, though.

I've used ThinkPads for the past six years and I'm leaning towards saying that my X200 is probably the best notebook I've ever used, ThinkPad or not. The build quality is excellent and the system feels very durable. It's quite lightweight, although I'm only getting about four hours of life out of a 6-cell battery. The power is definitely there as well... I'm starting to learn 3D modeling apps using Poser 7, and so far this machine has done all my renders quickly. I can also run some light games on here, as well.

Ergonomically it's a great system as well... it's got a full-sized keyboard, and the WXGA resolution is a great upgrade from the previous X60/X61. Typing and other keyboard work for long stretches is a breeze, although my hands do feel a little cramped from the short palmrest. The X200 also runs very cool... it's a notebook you can actually use on your lap, if so inclined.

If you've been looking at netbooks and like the size and weight, but wanted something with more guts, this might be a great machine for you. With prices on these dropping a bit since the release of the X201, it's a good time to pick up a great notebook for a great price.

These Thinkpads are the Best They have the look and Feel of High Quality!

I have a SL410 but Amazon no longer sells it, so writing this here.

Bought a Toshiba laptop weeks ago then returned it. It was OK but it looked and felt cheap with the very high gloss surface had to constantly wipe it down. The thinkpads have a matte finish, much better.

Also the Toshiba Laptop had these annoying popup windows that would appear reminding me to upgrade and buy software.

The touch pad is great very accurate, also much better then my toshiba.

Only had mine a few a couple weeks and am impressed overall.

I've been a electronics tech for 20 years and a IT degree, I can say these are made very well. The connectors and interface are well designed. Just wish mine was a little lighter the 410 is about 5lbs.

(EDIT: at time of purchase march 23, 2013. This product was selling new for $700 even. If your price is higher I would look at another as it is no longer a bargin above $700)

This is truly an excellent bargain for the price. An i7 processor, 1TB hard-drive, and 17" HD screen? Whats not to love? Well, a few things but first:....

The good.

As stated, an I7 processor which is very impressive especially at this price. If you bounce on over to you can see how this processor stacks up to others.

huge 1TB hard-drive to hold your entire movie/game/music collection

8GB ram which i believe (unconfirmed yet) is expandable to 16gb

4USB ports(not 2) 2 are 3.0, located on the left which are not shown in product pics or in description.

Full keyboard with numeric pad. A big plus as some laptops even giant ones like this refuse to include a numeric pad.

Great heat distribution, powerful processor fan. However i always recommend investing in a good laptop chill pad to help protect your investment and prolong life.

Good battery life(2-4hrs) for such a powerful PC. This is not a traveling laptop, it doesn't have an ultra 8-12hr battery life, don't expect to go all day long not plugged in. This is a powerhouse and needs to be plugged in.(also recommend turning on the feature where the battery doesn't charge beyond 80% to prolong life. its in there somewhere)

The bad:

CD rom drive. It works, well even but the button is so easy to hit it almost always pops out when moving it around. I know most laptops suffer from the cd rom button occasionally getting bumped and knocked out but on this one its ridiculous. Maybe if there was a recessed wall around it or something. its a complete pain.

Sound. This is a big one for me. Your speakers are slightly above worthless on this. They are tiny. tiny tiny. maybe 1inX0.5in on each side. that is it. its like having tweeters for your main sound. The speakers were the reason i removed a star. Do not expect any rich high-def sound with this laptop and there is plenty of wasted space they could have put bigger or more speakers. Headphones are better for sound quality but its not super rich sound due to sub-par sound card but with headphones the sound is much better, good enough for gaming

Graphics card. Your processor will outperform the graphics card. The card is of lower quality as well, so while your machine will handle all the superb graphics cranked to ultra high, your card will not display much change between the ulta high and around medium. So while your monitor is highdef, its not going to look super ultra pretty like you would see on today's common high-def TV. Its not a bad graphics card, just...average for budget laptop. This is a graphics card i would expect to find in a 300-500 laptop

Webcam. If this was the 2000-2010's it would be great but in today's technology my android has a better camera in it. Its good enough for say skype and things like that. Possibly for shooting medium-quality youtube movies but its nothing highdef(as claimed). 1.2MP is not much in today's world.

Hard drive is kinda slow at 5200 RPM but that doesnt matter too much, just takes longer to write bigger files to the drive. no real big thing only pointing it out

The ugly:

Of course, win8! Its horrible when you first get it, then tolerable when you learn how to deal with it. Its not good, boo on microsoft but im not holding this against samsung. You can tweak in a start bar to get the win7 feel back. Like i said...tolerable, nothing against the PC however since good luck finding any other new PC without win8.

Very minimalistic, stocky design. Its for lack of better words, dull. Quite featureless. No extra buttons for say hot-keying it does have a function keylock which is nice but no hot buttons for web-browser, or turning sound on/off. that sorta thing. As said earlier, a lot of wasted space that could of been filled with goodies but its not a big concern and shouldn't be yours.

No lights for lock keys. If you turn cap-locks on/off. or num or function there is no indicator light anywhere telling you its on. Which is really bad for say passwords where the keys are hidden and you cant figure out why Passw0rd isn't working when you are really typing pASSWRD. stupidity....and i just accidentally knocked open my cd-rom again, the new bane of my existence....ahh white people problems...

The pad can be a bit troublesome to learn its features at first but once you get it down its fine (like using 2 fingers for scroll and its inverted scroll) Im still working on that one.

Summary:

Im sure my review sounded much more harsh and critical than it is but really this is an awesome laptop, most of it was only to make people aware of some of the quirks ive encountered to help them understand what they receive. For me this is perfect. I wanted "the best bang for my buck" and i believe i got just that. for $700 this is an EXCELLENT laptop. Almost a gaming laptop. I truly do recommend this product for anyone seeking for a new laptop that wants a powerhouse on a budget because this product does deliver and samsung does have excellent customer service.

bought this laptop to help me edit photos I take as I am learning photography. I needed a laptop that could handle a photo editing program, such as PhotoShop, and lots of storage for saved photos. So far, it's working great for this purpose, with one exception: Windows 8 does not recognize .dat files of online photo editors such as Pixlr or Picmonkey, so that's a negative. Since I am use to Windows Vista, I was a little worried about getting a laptop with the new Windows 8 system, but once you get used to the vastly different arrangement of everything, it's pretty cool and easy to use. Overall, I am very satisfied.

Best Deals for Samsung Series 3 NP350E7C-A01US Intel 3rd generation Core i7-3630QM

Early 2013 I searched for exactly this configuration: 17", 8gb, core i7. The general starting price was $900. Not only is the Samsung 3 a bargain at $700, the remaining stats are almost to good to be true, 2.4ghz, 1tb, and so on.

My first impression usng the laptop was how fast it booted and how quiet it was. So far I haven't seen any issues installing the programs I usually use. It's exactly the laptop I wanted.

Then there's Windows 8: at first I hated it, but after delving deeper into it, the new possibilities are definitely intriguing. There are two "realms" in the new windows, the desktop which is the old interface and the app world, which is the new interface. Switching back and forth is cumbersome at first, and the default configuration has you falling out of desktop and into the metro interface quite often. But you can work pretty much the way you used to in Windows 7 by 1) learning the shortcuts, e.g.windows key+d returns you to desktop mode. 2) select desktop applications as default programs for common filetypes (pdf, jpg, mp3, avi, etc) if a metro app is the default you leave desktop mode when opening the object and don't return to desktop when closing. 3) I haven't done this yet, but you can also install one of a number of programs that reinstates the start menu and disables the charms menu. Though the start window is different than the old start menu, the search available there appears to me to do the job, so I will try it out some more before making this move.

What some people might miss: this dvd drive does not support blu ray, and the touch pad does not have an external switch to enable/disable.

All in all, a dream configuration at this price. I'm beginning to like Samsung.

I tried many other models of laptops but this one works so great.

The graphics are very vivid, programs run fast, and very silent!

I was really surprised with this laptop since it is not expensive but has so many strength.

The laptop works well for a variety of different tasks. I've used it to watch sporting events via the HDMI port and my tv. I also do all of my office work on it as well. Good buy.

Keyboard keys are in weird places. Fn key is in where usually ctl key is. Eventhough it has a full size keyboard you have to use function key to type certain commonly used keys like home, end which is very annoying. I find typing with this laptop very hard. Finally you cannot upgrade any component other than memory in this laptop. Mine came with Intel 3945ABG wifi and want to replace with 4965AGN card found a good deal over the internet. After the upgrade the laptop BIOS catchup saying non lenovo item found and wont boot at all. Moreover lenovo is not selling this card and lenovo branded card cost you a fortune. If this laptop is not under warranty anything happens to it forget it you have to throw it out. My Dell laptop few things went wrong after warranty I replaced the components with bargain price and this I have to trash if I have any problem. I already replaced keyboard under warrany and the cusomer service insisted me to send the laptop and they will do a through diagnostics that it is not my problem only then they will replace. I don't recommend this laptop and it is good only if you have warranty and definetly not worth for money. Lenovo will lose customers to their competetors until they change their proprietary mentality.

I used this daily for four years, and had no problems with it-at all.

I never had any issues with the hinges, or keys. I have to wonder what people do to their laptops to have so many issues. It is true that I didn't carry it around a whole lot though.

The webcam works great, and comes with easy software. The wireless was quick and powerful. I liked the big orange volume control switch. I had zero problems with the hard disk or OS... zero. No bad sectors, almost never crashed... no freezing or other weirdness. I'd buy another Lenovo.

Honest reviews on Lenovo 59012696 IdeaPad Y510-1 15.4" Notebook

I bought this laptop in 2008 knowing that I would use it for an engineering program at school. It did and excellent job and helped get me through my degree. In 2010 I upgraded the memory and processor in it to use as a gaming system, as well as updating the OS to Win7. I was impressed to find that the motherboard inside would support an 800MHz bus speed, as opposed to the 667MHz bus speed that the laptop uses natively. All the upgrades went off without a hitch. Most people wind up buying a new laptop rather than trying to upgrade the old one, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had some great upgrade options to help give this laptop a significant performance boost. After the upgrades, I continued to use it as a desktop replacement and it has been excellent the whole time!

I bought a Lenovo Y510 Thinkpad three years ago. As I type one screen hinge is completely broken which has caused the entire screen hinge to separate from the screen. The keyboard is coming apart bit by bit and I have no A key. My hubby warned me about buying a plastic unit but I am quite careful with my equipment so I thought I would have no problem. The repair shop is unable to obtain parts in US so the expense, and time, to get parts from China is both unacceptable and expensive (~$350). The effectiveness of the unit, i.e. performance, ease of use, clarity of screen, etc. is good but heck, if I can't open and close the laptop screen then the other parts mean nothing.

I recently acquired a slightly upgraded version of this laptop and I have to say, I am highly impressed with the Lenovo quality. And I'm an IT guy.

For those that don't know, Lenovo (a Chinese company) purchased the PC business from IBM, including the product names (one with business clout is the ThinkPad line).

When it comes to building a robust machine that's capable of taking the kind of beating a business professional doles out on a machine, the ThinkPad line always stood for high quality and high expectations. Thankfully those expectations continue to be met by Lenovo in the ThinkPad line.

Pros mostly unique to Lenovo's systems:

Powered USB port; you can plug in any device that can be charged via USB into the computer (the yellow USB port) and it will charge even if the laptop is powered off. You won't need to pack every wall wart with you when you travel anymore!

Textured touch pad; when you're working in darker locations, this helps you easily locate the touchpad

Fn and Ctrl keys can be swapped via the BIOS; Lenovo has positioned the Fn key used to switch to external displays, change screen brightness and so on, where you'd normally find the CTRL key on the left part of the keyboard so you can swap the function of the two keys in the BIOS

Robust recovery options

Useful bundled software; password vault used to store passwords in an encrypted file, connection manager makes connecting to wired and wireless networks easier, excellent power control (let's you see a ton of info that straight Windows 7 doesn't show, such as how much power the machine is currently using)

LED light on screen to illuminate the keyboard (though there is a con; see below)

ThinkVantage button; press the button during boot up and it takes you to system restore which can restore files, just the OS or completely reset the system to it's factory installed configuration (which nukes local files, so backup before running that option if you have files you don't want to lose!). You can also access driver updates for your machine directly from Lenovo with this button as well (yeah, like I said, I'm an IT guy!)

Bundled software. Being an IT guy I HATE most company's bundled software. Not so with Lenovo, as everything on this machine, with few exceptions, is worth keeping and using.

USA based support. Purchase a Dell, speak to someone in India. Purchase a Lenovo ThinkPad, speak to someone in Atlanta, Georgia. And no, I'm not dismissing the capability of India based support, but we all know it is sometimes difficult to understand Indian speakers.

Cons:

The textured touchpad, when used for extended periods, may make your finger uncomfortable

The LED light for keyboard illumination works, but not nearly was well as the backlit Dell keyboards

As configured this system is Windows 7 32 bit; I recommend 64 bit only these days especially if you ever want to upgrade past 4 GB of RAM (something else I'd recommend). If you want Win7 64 bit, you can purchase the 64 bit restore CDs from Lenovo's customer service (WHICH IS USA BASED!) for ~$50.

2 GB RAM is adequate but should be 4 GB at least for a Win 7 machine to really shine

Case design. One thing that never seems to change from ThinkPad model to ThinkPad model is the design of the laptop itself; a ThinkPad LOOKS like a ThinkPad, even if it was built 5 years ago. This is good or bad, depending on what you're looking for.

Working where I do, I have the luxury of directly comparing this Lenovo laptop w/ the Dell E-series. When comparing the 2 side by side, it's amazing how much better built the ThinkPad is. Sound quality from the speakers on the ThinkPad is so much nicer than the Dell E6410. The screen is brighter and cleared. The E6410, if dropped on a corner of the laptop, would be shattered and destroyed. The ThinkPad? Maybe pop the bezel back in place and you're back up and running.

And let's talk about heat dissipation. If you plan on using your laptop as a LAPtop, don't even consider the Dell E-series. It is scorcher. You will sweat with it on your lap. And don't even think about leaving it running on a table with varnish. It WILL melt the varnish if left to sit long enough. Always put it on a place mat or something else. Then you have this ThinkPad. I've left it running diagnostics over night, on a table and guess what? It was STILL cool to the touch. There is a very slight warmth but not something you'll notice in general use.

Overall I feel Lenovo builds a vastly superior product for business users than the other 2 of the big three (Dell, HP and Lenovo). Neither of the other manufacturer's laptops have the feel of a high build quality and design. They are OK, but if you're looking for the perfect business laptop to travel around with you, and not just pretty eye candy to show off your prestige, buy the ThinkPad, even at a slightly higher price point than Dell or HP. You will appreciate it in the long run, as this is a machine that will last for a couple years longer than your warranty runs, unlike the Dell and HPs of the same class. And a Dell you'll be lucky to have last more than 3 years.

Even using my company's Dell employee purchase plan and the higher discount it affords, I chose a Lenovo and will do so for as long as Lenovo continues to build one of the best designed, robust and well thought out laptops for business users.

Highly recommended (the ThinkPad line, not necessarily this build). For this particular laptop, call Lenovo and spend $50 on the Windows 7 64 bit restore discs.

I have had this laptop for 3 years now. In the meantime, I maxed the RAM to 8GB and Hardrive to 1 TB. It is very powerful and sturdy laptop. THe design allows it to be roughed and it keep on powering through. I run a lot of large spreadsheets and have not been disappointed. I also do music and video editing on the side. It is slower than anything with an i3 processor but it is very logically setup and designed. I use the red trackpad on the road and a wireless mouse on the desk. Battery life has gone down to an hour now, but I would only trade this for another Lenovo Thinkpad. It may not have all the fancy features, but it is a workhorse.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 Laptop Notebook (2847-9UU) Intel Core 2 Duo

I ordered a SL510 -received it damaged. Returned and got another. This one would not connect to wi-fi. Called many times with no help. Returned for repair THREE times and still did not work for more than a couple days at a time. Got my son to do a temp. fix but the unit still keeps dropping the Wi-Fi connection and shuts down on me at any time it feels like. (Lenovo said it did all it could and I now had the unit beyond warranty.)

I had an IBM Thinkpad that was great, but the Lenovo is a piece of garbage. I'll never buy a Lenovo product again!

Lenovo ships from China and while you wait and wait for delivery the price will drop. Lenovo's price match offers to pay you the difference if you submit an identical Lenovo quote within a certain number of days. Lots of luck making the quote and your order identical. ANY discrepancy will result in denial of the entire refund and you will not be told that there is a discrepancy in time for you to resubmit. This will happen even if you were told by a Lenovo agent on submission that you should receive a refund of the difference in price! This behavior will be cited as Lenovo Policy. The PC itself is not worth the bother of dealing with Lenovo and its policy.

Just got this from J&R as it's local.

Only had it a few days so this is just a first impression -

What a beaut! This laptop looks and feels like my perfect ideal for a laptop, understated (no crappy chrome-esq plastic, big glowing lights etc)just a very nice matte black soft finish, nice lines, small(ish) logo, everything looks and feels so solid it just comes together and seems right, a good weight, its not trying to be sleek and light, its just doing one job (high performance) and that is how it looks and feels, I will put up with the weight (not that bad in the included rucksack). So my first impression is very favorable.

So I'm in the process of getting all the software sorted out, which i guess is fun.

Here's my initial pro's/cons:

Pro's:

1 This beast barely breaks a sweat I mean its so quite, the stealth image does do it justice, it's very quite almost silent, when I reran the window index thingy the sound never changed, and doesn't even feel warm.

2 Screen is lovely Matte and very very bright clear and generally amazing, way too intense in a dark room, my old dell xps 1330 which is sitting besides with both at max brightness it looks like a dull yellow compared, it has very good angular visibility too.

3 Keyboard is nice, firm well spaced out, I like the keyboard lights without it keys actually very hard to see in low light, as the text doesn't contrast at all with the black keys.

3 Touchpad nice size and nice to have multi-touch gestures.

4 Asus software, actually some useful software(and bloatware see Cons) like fastboot which delays boot items.

5 Backpack (rucksack) good amount of pockets, sturdy and compact, only just fits laptop in fact, but has plenty of space for extra stuff, nice touch Asus.

I don't know about performance as not pushed it at all yet, but from the index score its pretty good, I am mainly using it for graphic's work so its more important to be fast processor and memory than graphics, but I am tempted to buy and try some of the latest games cos this beast is designed for them. Btw in case you don't know one downside to this rig is the graphics card has a 128bit memory bus instead of 192, which from what I have read makes a difference, the 17" has the 192 bit bus. It's no big deal for me and having a usable size for a laptop was more important than Memory bus speed, still would have preferred to have the option for this, recon most gamers will pay the extra and Asus should have made some models with the bigger bus, and given us the choice.

Cons:

1 Bloatware crappy crappy annoying bloatware, such a shame cos in my mind Asus has really got there stuff together, making some seriously decent equipment and marketing and doing everything right, except bowing to the pressure to include crap on their rigs (for a small dime no doubt) I decided to create a backup disc set and reformat which took hours only to find that the backup disc puts all the crap on again except the drivers which you need, so either way you have to uninstall it all. I ended up taking almost everything off then using the asus utility to load the drivers and useful stuff back on. thing is there are tons of processes running and I hate not knowing whats happening behind the scenes on my rig, I wish I could completely disable/delete most of these processes and services running but I don't know what they all do.

2 included gaming mouse is nice, uninstalled software for it, limited control and adds to the startup.

Will update after a while when I learn more.

Update 1:

Had a problem with the Realtek Lan network drivers, they kept failing to install fully and could not get windows to get the drivers to work or install, spent many hours trying to find the solution online and in their help guides, was thinking either the lan hardware was dead or in some kind of zombie like deep sleep. Eventually got it to work, uninstalled everything Realtek driver and windows device hardware, rebooted then manually installed by handpicking the type of device and the driver -thankfully everything started to work! I now have lan working and don't have to do a emergency disk reinstall from scratch or send it back.

Power4Gear Hybrid seems really buggy, doesn't connect quickly enough with the hardware button, also when I save it to screen timeout it doesn't work and the screen just stayed on, all night! not a major bug but hope they fix with a update.

Also with all the software installed or most of it, my processes list is way too big for me! I like to know what's running and keep my system simple and bare, but this is more about the extra software included, and being unsure what I can uninstall.

Im gonna cut straight to what you gamers want to hear.

This laptop can run skyrim at MAX settings, and ittl get a TEEENY bit choppy in towns.

It can run WoW at max settings, without skipping a beat. (poor internet connections may still slow the loading of orgrimmar though)

It can run SWTOR at max settings, and same as wow, my slow interet speeds slow the loading of the Republic fleet on a busy day.

It can run Tf2 at max settings, even when i use console commands to DOUBLE the gamespeed on offline practice mode.

It runs minecraft at full settings without flaw.

Im currently installing Just Cause 2 and Portal 2 and Garys mod to test those games, but based on how it handled the first 5, im sure they'll do just fine

The gaming mouse mine came with was a nice freebie, but as a long time user of the Razer Naga, i feel that the button placement for hte included mouse is horrible for gaming. Two on either side of the primary mouse buttons. and 2 below the scroll wheel.

It also comes with a backpack. Ive only used the backpack for 1 day so far, but it seems like a decent backpack.

The backpack is dark grey with mild green. (at least the one *I* received is that color, peraps the colors vary)

at first i ordered this laptop by mistake ( i was reviewing the G73sx ) but after researching more, and seeing in person how big a 17'3 laptop is, im glad i got this version.

The trackpad is OKAY i guess, but when im playing anything but SWTOR or WOW, i use an external mouse.

also its easy to disable the trackpad so you dont hit it by accident, you just press Fn+F9

the lighted keyboard is very nice, there are also arrows on the WASD keys, and a little jumping dude on the spacebar.

The battery life depends what setting u have it on, theres a button on the top left that switches the laptop between 4 modes:

1. High Performance

2. Quiet office

3. Entertainment (Theater)

4. Battery saver

at first i thought my laptop couldnt game with lots of other stuff open in the background, then i realized i just had it on battery saving mode. So dont get worried when that happens, just make sure u set it to high performance.

and as the default background suggests, this laptop has the look and feel of a stealth fighter jet.

This is a fantastic laptop. DEFINITELY worth the money.

I purchased the Asus laptop based on a recommendation from my son, who has had an Asus for the last 2 years. The G53SX is a great PC! It was delivered early and was exactly what I had ordered, all parts in place and ready to rock and roll! I wanted a good gaming machine for Lord of the Rings Online, and it is just perfect for it! The HD screen is wonderful. It's a somewhat heavier laptop, but I chalk that up to the fact that it is made out of sturdy, quality, materials. Oh, one thing that I should mention is how quiet this laptop is. Compared to my older HP laptop, I barely know I am running anything, even my hi-def game! And it is super-cool, temperature-wise, too! I've had it for about a month or so and am very happy with it!

Honest reviews on ASUS G53SX-DH71 Full HD 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of

I've been using the computer for just over two weeks now and love it! When I first purchased a laptop in 2007, my main objective was to get something powerful for online gaming. At that time I was playing World of Warcraft, and the rig I had purchased harnessed more than enough power to handle it smoothly. Most people into PC gaming though, are well aware that WoW is not a very graphically intensive game. So what I ended up with was a laptop that was great for playing games at my desk at home, but not practical at all for any other purpose. It was too cumbersome, weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 pounds, had a 17 inch screen and a 10"x3x"4" "Brick" that was part of the power cord. So I essentially had a "mobile computer", that wasn't really mobile at all which I spent far too much money on and turned out being a lemon after 6 months with horrible customer support. But I'm not writing this review on that laptop, I'm just trying to give you a little history on what motivated me to buy this particular laptop. So, back to the original topic at hand...the product review.

This time around when I decided to purchase another laptop I decided to go with something smaller, lighter weight and powerful enough to handle today's games without going too far over the top on the hardware. One of the main problems I've noticed with buying what is regarded as "today's most powerful computer" is that the more powerful the rig, the bigger it gets. This laptop seems to be a perfect balance between the two for me. The size is right, so the computer is mobile and it has pretty decent graphics power. The first thing I installed was "Rift", which is an MMO similar in gameplay to World of Warcraft but far more graphically demanding. I'm currently running this game on the highest factory setting without going into custom settings and the game is running beautifully! The computer design is also quite unique and very appealing. It also comes with a backpack/carrying case which makes the computer mobile in less than a minute.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a decent machine without spending a fortune on any of the top end models. My intentions are to try a few different MMOs, trade stocks and take online classes and I'm sure this computer has the power to handle any of those tasks. This makes my 5th computer/laptop and I'm extremely pleased with it so far!

The Asus G53SX is a powerful machine -when it is working. Plays all games at "ultra" settings without breathing hard and at an attractive price point.

However, the video card failed after only one week. Suddenly, the lcd screen remains dark during boot. It is either the screen or video card that is faulty since (fortunately) the video out port works when I plug in an external monitor. This enabled me to recover my files. This problem is apparently a known issue and more common than should be acceptable to any manufacturer. Searching the Web you'll find numerous incidents of this problem with other owners of Asus' Republic of Gaming machines (both G73 and G53 models). In fact there is a You Tube video showing another frustrated owner with this issue.

As powerful this machine is and as sweet as it is to use -when in working condition. My advice is to avoid this machine until this issue is fixed. Or take your chances and get frustrated with a machine that costs $1400+/with a known history of failure. Apparently Asus has an issue with quality control of their notebooks or are ignoring the issue as a cost of doing business.

Update:

After getting little satisfaction from Asus Support, Amazon stepped in and reaffirmed their commitment to excellent customer service. I am a long time / avid buyer and constantly "spoiled" by their adherence to customer satisfaction. The growth and profitability of their business reflects the priority they put on going the extra mile to meeting the customer needs. More companies should learn from their example. It is not surprise that Amazon has such a loyal customer base.

Oh Amazon is sending a replacement. Hopefully, I will have more luck with the reliability of the machine.

Update:

It has been several months since I received the replacement unit and it has operated flawlessly. Continues to be a great machine with all the power you need to play any game without exhibiting any effort. I have updated the rating to 3 stars, it would have been 5 stars except for the fact that the first unit did was flawed.

AWESOME! Of all the laptops I've had, this is by far the best. It's well constructed and sturdy. Our almost 80 pound dog walked across the screen and there was NO damage. This Dell runs Quiet....no whirring wizzing or loud fan sound. The keyboard is very quiet when I am using it: no click-clack, plus the number pad is a great addtion. The on/off key is well placed and the mouse works well.

Now, Windows 8: It is great once it is set-up to your liking. It has an Apple-esque feel to it, but not quite there yet. If you do not like the new Windows, you can always convert back to the regular old-school Icons by hitting the desk top key.

This Dell has been a very good purchase for me. Dude, I got a Dell!!!

I should have paid more attention to the reviews, but this computer had everything I was looking for at a decent price. It was great for six months until it wouldn't boot on startup. I talked with tech support, and was instructed to send the computer to Dell for repair. The last update on the Dell site said that the part needed to repair the computer wasn't in stock and that there is no timeframe on when it will be repaired. Dell never even tried to contact me about this issue. It's bad enough that the computer quit working, but I'm extremely displeased with Dell's customer service.

Update: I finally got my computer back. I contacted Dell through their Facebook page. The gentlemen I corresponded with looked into it and kept me in the loop with what was going on. I haven't had any trouble with it since. It's a great computer as long as it works.

I considered just dumping it in the trash. Its not worth anything not even the simple basics like cant even surf the web on tons of basic things example icloud isn't supported with the system things like that I even tried downloading firefox nope not supported by the system but that's NOT why I'm upset with the product I mean its an older computer I'm upset because its just malfunctioning on the simple things . Not to mention how much it kept FREEZING continuously.

tried contacting the seller to return this computer under the subject"unwanted " or something like that cuz is worthless but that was useless too.they said about dealing with deffective or doa but it is defective!! again malfunctioning and freezing i cannot do anything on it. So i wrote the exact same thing back on a second review under the subject"defective" And he wrote back OH alll of sudden its defective....uh no its been from the start. So i took that as a rude remark.

and then yesterday i tried using it one more time and BAM shut off on me ...

yeah its cheap but there is nothing that you can do with it. I would feel bad to even try and re sell it. With all sincerity SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR SOMETHING BETTER AND ACTUALLY USEFUL.

This laptop was an awesome buy in 2009 and considering I got it for $650 I couldn't go wrong. I only have 3 problems with this laptop.

1. The touchpad doesn't work right while gaming and I have the newest drivers and such

I don't know why someone would want to use a touchpad for gaming but if you do it won't work

2. The sound quality is very nice but it is also very low...

It has amazing sound quality but in a slightly noise environment you can forget about using the speakers

3. It actually overheats during intense gaming and will shut off completely for 10 minutes. I had the laptop hit 108 degrees Celsius...

This is easily solved by purchasing a cooling pad but those aren't very cheap.

I did quite a bit of research for a new laptop. This Sony Vaio is excellent for the price. I wanted to make my own laptop on dell and sony website and everything was way above this price with all these features. For excellent performance and added features I didnt mind spending this much. I play games with no problem and multi task with amazing speed. The fan noise is a little loud at times of long gaming but I expected that. Overall I recommend this laptop.

I just purchased my Sony laptop to replace a 2 year old HP pavillion series that had many overheating problems. This laptop is does not have much lag time and does not seem to have the same over heating issues. I know I could feel different long term, but this last month I have been very pleased with how it runs my applications/games. I was even pleased that it did not seem to be burdened with a lot of extra programs. I definately would recommend this laptop for someone who need a little faster processing laptop. I know there are a few cons, but I have not run into the problem of accidently turning it off because the turn off is on the side where the mouse may be.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4" Notebook (1.73 GHz Intel Core i7

I've owned this laptop since Jan 2011 and its been great. Great hardware and all-around performance. I bought it at a brick and mortar store for $1300 after taxes, so $1800 strikes me as pricey (maybe I just got lucky?) but it was a great value buy for me.

Battery life is short(90-100min) if you're using wi-fi or running the bluray drive, however if you have the wi-fi off it jumps up to almost 3hrs on power saver mode. I haven't had issues since I plan around those things. In addition the 5400rpm harddrive seems rather laggy if you're running large programs, not annoying but noticeable when loading sometimes.

I'm currently looking into a RAM upgrade and getting an SSD drive to replace the stock hdd to help with "laggy" feeling.

All in all, this is a great laptop if you can find it at the right price point. I highly recommend it!

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4" Notebook (1.73 GHz Intel Core i7

I find this laptop to be super fast and efficient for video editing, etc. so have to give it 5 stars. Using CS5 Creative Suite Pro Premiere Pro and it's a breeze working on this Vaio model. Left it at the standard 6G of RAM but upgraded the OS to Windows Ultimate (actually, dual-booted so I can continue to have Sony coverage).

Minor down-side is battery life (to be expected for i7 CPU) and also the fan nice (again, loaded machines tend to generate more heat). Bought it from the Sony outlet Center for a cut-throat price so am super-happy.

Bought my keyboard skin on eBay (from China because Sony didn't make em). Got my protector case and adapter case from Amazon (zero tax) so I'm all good.

Don't forget to email yourself the Serial Number for this and other gadgets you may have in case it's lost or stolen ;)

Good luck!
