I just have to briefly review this laptop to put some of the bad reviews at bay. I just got this baby yesterday and it has blown me away. The screen is brilliant, the speed is unreal, and the 3D is awesome. Even the speakers are top notch. I'll gush more about it later, first I want to let future buyers know the few minor quirks:

Yes, the secondary hard drive makes a small clicking noise. However, what you will want to do ANYWAY when buying such a rig, is replace the PRIMARY hard drive slot with a solid state drive (I used a 240GB Intel 520). THEN, put the original primary drive (the hybrid one) in the secondary slot. Now, enjoy face-melting mind-bending speeds without any clicking noise. Now your boot time is maybe 10 seconds with a fresh windows 8 install.

Yes, battery life is very short. It is not unexpected with such a powerhouse of a computer. If you need to go more than probably 2 hours without an outlet, this beast is not for you. This is not an ultra-portable machine. It falls more in the desktop-replacement category.

Yes, you can watch your 3D movies (even MKVs) with this laptop. You will probably want to follow a brief tutorial (google iradar mkv 3d nvidia) on using an application called Stereoscopic Player. Choose "Sensio" in Layout settings and "NVIDIA 3d Vision" in playback methods. Make the video full screen with your glasses on and enjoy. Nvidia also offers an application to play 3d video.

I will update this review with any other notable findings that have not been mentioned by other reviewers.

UPDATE 1: I have been casually using the laptop for a couple weeks now. I want to note a couple cool things. The "Qosmio" on the back of the screen glows red in the dark which I JUST noticed. The screen is REALLY bright. On maximum brightness, it is brighter than my 58" plasma TV which is on vivid setting. The laptop has not gotten hot like I thought it might, even after hours of watching 3D video. However, I have not tested the temperature with intensive gaming which could produce different results.

I think it is important for future buyers to really consider the size of the laptop, as well as the massive charger when considering this machine. It is considerably heavier than the average laptop, weighing in at 7.5 lbs. You will almost certainly need to carry the charger as well, so add another 2 lbs. More to come later.

I got the Qosmio laptop. Few weeks back, and I'm quite impressed with it. Its pretty damn fast when its starts up and takes you straight into the main menu where you can select what you an to do. I always been a fan of Nvidia graphics, and playing the high-end games like Crisis 3 on it doesn't pose any issue on the unit. It'll get hot while running games like that mainly because of all four processors are running. But if you want to keep it cool, I suggest buying a cool in pad designed for gaming laptops. These things deffinately do a god job sucking that hot air out from beneath it. I would choose this gamin g platform over Alienwhare anytime.

I was a little hesitant about buying this laptop at first. $1,600 is a lot of money. Also no matter where I looked on the web I couldn't find many reviews about the laptop. So now that I've had it for 3 months let me tell you some things about it. (there is no rhyme or reason to the layout)

1. Nothing has broken or gone wrong, other people were complaining that thiers broke in a day and blah blah. But mine is just fine.

2. Yes, the battery life is only 2 hours when playing a game without have the charger plugged in, but everyone who buys a gaming laptop accepts that fact.

3. It plays just about anygame on high graphics that I want it too. But if your thinking of buying this laptop be warned that it does not run filters such as FXAA and anti-aliasing that greatly. I mean, you can turn all the filters on a game such as skyrim on and turn the graphics to ultra. However you will be getting roughly 25-30 fps. But I've found that across all games if I leave the filters off but dial the graphics up they run 45 fps or over depending on the game and still look beautiful.

4. the list of games I play and the roughly estimated average fps I get: Minecraft-150-200 fps, Skyrim-45-60fps, borderlands 2-35-45 fps, chivalry medieval warfare-45-60 fps, planetside 2-35-45 fps, Black Ops 2: 45-55fps, GTA IV-35-45 fps, DayZ Mod-40-55fps, etc. I play many more games than that, those are just some of the more graphically demanding games. All games were set to high graphics with low or no filters

5. Windows 8 is just as good (better in my opinion) than wnidows 7. its much (much much) faster on start up. Like from opening the lid of the laptop to getting into the desktop takes about 2 seconds. including typing in a PIN. Also whoever says this isn't a gaming laptop because of windows 8 is lying. Software doesn't matter. It's all about the hardware.

6. I bought this laptop because my old dell inspiron something something fizzled out on me and I wanted to get a gaming laptop for college. I love it. Just don't be expecting to lug it to class every day if you get one because it is monstrous. Although I personally like bringing it to class to put everyone else's MacBook Pro to shame (Mac's suck)

7. I would suggest buying a cooling pad to put underneath it because it does get HOT. I went with the cooler master X3 because it had a bigger fan than the X2 even though the X2 had better reviews. The X3 is perfect and gets the job done well. My normal CPU tempt in games is about 67-70 Celsius and same with my GPU.

8. Be warned that even though it says 3GB gtx 670m in the description, IT WILL NOT PERFORM LIKE THE DESKTOP GTX 670. The gtx 670 plays skyrim at 100+ fps with filters and all on full. the gtx 670m (laptop version) WILL NOT DO THAT. With that being said, it is still an excellent graphics card.

9. The 2 TB of HDD space is lovely, I've alrdy used about 500gb of space on mine... I have a lot of games.

10. If you purchase one be sure to update the GPU driver and you will get better performance.

All in all it is a perfect gaming laptop. It's well priced compared to other laptops *ahem AlienWare*, built out of sturdy aluminum, or aluminium if your British, runs everything I want it to beautifully, It really is the Bee's Knee's. Just keep in mind that for this kind of money you can build an epic desktop that could play cryisis 3 on full 1080p graphics and what not. think of this as a $1200 desktop that you payed an extra $400 to have put into laptop form. Really, that's where most of the money is going, to make everything function very well at 1/3 it's intended size. With that being said this laptop is the ultimate LAN party machine because it has incredibly good graphics and you can pick up from your desk, pop it in your back pack, go on down to your friend Larry's house and set it back up with ease... Then chop his head off in Chivalry medieval warfare :D

5 out of 5... It is a seriously good gaming laptop for the money

Honest reviews on Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390 17.3-Inch 3D Laptop (Black Widow Styling

This was my 5th Toshiba Laptop between me and my family but will definitely be my last. Bought it customized from Toshiba Direct. It worked for about a month, and failed. They directed me to take it personally to their authorized service center for fastest service. It sat for a month waiting for a part that didn't fix it and now they are waiting for a new hard drive that they estimate will take 6 WEEKS to deliver. When I called support they told me that it would be faster if I go pick it up and mail it back to them (with no commitment on what "faster" means). They offer no explanation of why it would take 6 weeks for a new hard-drive. Also the warranty continues to expire while the unit sits in their hands. (It is warranted from purchase date only)

I asked for my money back. After 2 weeks they come back with an offer of store credit to Toshiba Direct because they don't give refunds. They only want to credit the purchase price so I would need to eat about $200 in sales tax and shipping on the original and another $200 when I use my credit. They explained to me that this was a great favor as they were not depreciated the value of the computer for the one month that I was apparently honored to have it work for me.

So the only choice I get from Toshiba are take a credit and get another Toshiba craptop eating the shipping and tax charges 2 twice or wait until they fix the one I have with no guarantee of how long it will take while my warranty ticks away.

Here are some other fun facts they won't give me anything in writing about my options won't send me an email. You also can't send them emails. Strikes me a little odd a computer company won't take an email. Nothing in writing appears to be their policy.

UPDATE Response to Toshiba's comment:

Regarding Toshiba's response to this review writing a review is what got their attention. They have someone who has the job to read these reviews. The resolution was they figured out how to get a hard disk and the computer was repaired after they read this review.

To be clear I still will not buy another Toshiba nor would I recommend buying one.

I bought this computer because I wanted a 17" with 3D capability and blu-ray viewing. To me it seemed like Toshiba has some of the strongest processor specs for a good price. I like to keep a laptop for 4 5 years so I did not want some underpowered processor which becomes obselete quickly. I looked at Dell and HP and settled on this unit.

The first unit I bought directly from Toshiba. This one was defective because the 3D did not function properly. Toshiba online direct support diagnosed a defective graphics card so I returned the unit. Now I am leery of Toshiba quality because I had bought the predecessor of this computer in 8/12 (the q7290), and this also was completely defective. Despite 2 duds I wanted to buy a Toshiba for the processor (i7 3630, price, blu-ray, and 3D. I could not find another major manufacturer offering all of this. I also liked the Toshiba website because to me it seems much clearer in terms of the specs of the computer and other details.

From my standpoint I am happy with this computer. It starts very quickly from the sleep mode (

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite 14-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

The triple core 1.8ghz Phenom II is a strong and economical processor choice for a desktop replacement-type laptop. This computer regularly gets 3.5 hours on the battery with only the screen brightness turned down a bit. I really enjoy this.

The video card is listed as an ATI Radeon 4250, which it is, but the M880 chipset for it gives it power way beyond the Radeon 4250's power in itself. When I checked the GPU benchmarks, the M880 chipset Radeon 4250 was consistently ranked middle of the pack, above such GPUs as the ATI Radeon HD 5145.

This computer is nice and portable, and the size is perfect for carrying with me. The screen isn't small to where it creates any issues with seeing for me; I'm actually enjoying the fact that it is shorter and I can cradle it in my lap perfectly and totally comfortably.

The keyboard is not one with a full NumPad, but that doesn't bother me much. The keys don't have a loose sensation at all, which I really enjoy. I am still getting used to the location of a few of my keys, especially the backspace, but I'll certainly get used to it soon enough. The trackpad isn't bad; you can tweak it however you like. One major issue I noticed right away is that the Webcam drivers were so out of date that the webcam wouldn't work when I first got the computer. I tried to update it and was told that this was already the newest available driver, but it still didn't work. I ended up taking it off altogether and restarting the computer and it works just fine now. Just a word of warning for those who are looking at this one: The webcam may take a second of fiddling with to get it set up correctly. IT is nothing too bad, and there are guides all over the internet explaining how to do this.

Other minor gripes, the touchpad can be seems a bit insensitive at times, even with it turned up almost all the way... The two finger scrolling also isn't as intuitive as it was with my last ASUS. I also have to press the power button to get it out of sleep... All minor gripes that I will come to terms with soon, after which I will be completely satisfied with my purchace. ;)

These are my impressions after a few days with this computer... Great specs and performance for the money! I'll be sure to update this review if anything else comes to mind.

EDIT I want to add that the sound quality that comes out of these speakers is not too bad. Look in the Control Panel for a utility called SmartAudio. It controls all the sound output for the computer and will give you much greater control over your desired sound. You can go into the SmartAudio settings and have it appear in the System Tray if you're going to be listening to a lot of music! I'm not claiming that the speakers are perfect; you're still going to need good external speakers or headphones if you want an excellent and LOUD audio experience. Basically, these are good for stock speakers, mainly because of the SmartAudio software (found in Control Panel)...

I don't think I need to say much coz the reviewer before me did a pretty good job explaining features and benefits of this machine, and that is the only reason I bought this laptop.

So now it is my moral duty to leave a review of this product so others might learn from my experience with this laptop.

I used to have an HP before this one which by the way was a complete piece of junk compared to this one, and the build quality on the Toshiba is much better that any of the HP's out there right now, given that this one does not have the bells and whistles like HP's have like a remote control to control your media or a wifi on-off switch, but still it is so worth the money when you actually have this thing in your hands.

The only thing I don't like about this laptop so far after a week of use is that the mouse pad buttons make a clicking noise and are not silent when clicked. Windows 7 loads up fairly fast and compared to my desktop which has a 3.0 ghz quad core processor, this one loads up may be a second or two later, so really impressed by that.

I have really been looking for a 14" screen laptop coz 15" seemed to big for my portable computing needs, and I dont know for what ever reason the 14" laptops Ive been looking for have been more money than the 15" laptops, so I was lucky enough to find this one.

Haven't tested the graphics card yet, but I know it should be alright for playing suitable games on the laptop since I use my desktop for playing power and graphic hungry games.

I also like the feature where you can put two fingers on the track pad and maximize or minimize your fonts going in or out on the track pad.

If you are on a budget, you need a laptop for yourself or your son or daughter going to college this should satisfy most peoples needs.

Oh and by the way I did go to a best-buy and turned on a laptop with an i3 processor and this one has a much faster load time than an i3, so people out there debating Intel i3 or this one, it should be a no brain er, I didn't have a chance to compare i5 to this one, but in comparison with an i3 I would think that this processor should be at par if not less than an i5.

Oh and by the way the battery on this thing is really good, It lasted me about 4.5 hours before it needed a charge in Toshiba Eco mode.

I think I've done my job for leaving a review for this laptop so now I can sleep good, coz I know hopefully I helped in simplifying someone Else's decision out there.

My review may not be as thorough as the previous two which were extremely helpful for me, but here goes!

I spent a good deal of time researching what I needed in a computer. I debated a netbook, desktop, larger vs. smaller laptop. My previous computer was a 6 year old HP desktop which had worked well for me, but I needed something for commuting back and forth to school with. I was not a fan of laptops in general as I had never had one before and had only used a couple of laptops. My research brought me to another store at first and I had settled to wait to buy the laptop there for my state's tax free weekend, but a week before I was going to buy it the store raised the price which caused me to do some more shopping around.

This brought me to Amazon where I found this great deal! The Toshiba was a better model at a lower price and after reading the reviews I purchased it.

I have had the laptop for two days now, but I am thrilled with it so far. The difference in speed is amazing and I have never had a computer that starts up as fast as this one does. The size of it is perfect for me; it feels small and compact without being as tiny as a netbook (my sister has one and the screen size would drive me bonkers!). As far as the webcam issue, I have been able to use my webcam without any problems so far and haven't had to do anything to fix it.

I like windows 7, but I did have some minor problems trying to get some of my older software to work, but I have now gotten it all up and running (it took me an hour or so to work through these minor issues as I'm not terribly tech savvy).

The battery has been lasting somewhere between 3.5-4 hours. Great keypad for typing. The speakers are decent.

The only drawback with this laptop was that it doesn't have lightscribe technology which I use fairly often, but other than that I have no complaints. I would (and actually have already to a friend) highly recommend this laptop if you're looking for something portable, fairly powerful, and easy to use. At this price you just can't beat it!

UPDATE: I have now had this laptop for about 6 months. I would still say I LOVE IT! However, I will alert others that the hard drive crashed after less than a month of my owning it. This was an inconvenience due to classes having started. I called tech support and they were very helpful and able to address my issues, but they kept asking me what I had done to it as if it were my fault! That is the only issue I had because I had not done anything different with it than normal, but other than that the technicians were helpful and clear about what I should try and then quick to tell me my options about sending it in for service. I opted to pay to have it overnight shipped from a UPS store instead of waiting for them to send me a box that I could send to Toshiba for free. I am so glad I did this! I sent it in the next day (a friday) and was able to track progress online. I had it back within two weeks and I have not had a problem with it since. I have read some of the bad reviews and I would disagree with the two major complaints I have seen. I do not think the laptop is loud at all and my battery still lasts 3-4 hours. Still very happy with my purchase!

UPDATE: Coming up on 3 years with this laptop now. I have had to get a new battery, the original one would no longer hold a charge for more than an hour, but I nearly always have my laptop turned on. The webcam has become rather testy and if the screen is not in the right position it will not work for online video chatting, but I have not had the same issue with just turning on the webcam to use for taking video or pictures. Other than that it is still a very reliable laptop and I have not had other issues with it. I did drop it on the floor this morning (Darn cat getting in the way asking for breakfast!) and a small chip was broken off of the front right corner, but on putting the chip back in, it seems to be staying perfectly in place and the functionality of the computer was not affected at all. Still very pleased with my purchase! (I paid about $550.00 for it in August 2010.)

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

This is my first review; so please be kind. Thanks.

Here I go over my first impressions, go into detail about the specs and performance, and give some advice for potential buyers.

Two things I didn't address in the video is the "fan problem" and the build quality. Although I can hear my fan, it is in no way loud or distracting; people who buy laptops with more than two cores should expect the fan to be on almost always unless they want their processor to fry.

Second, the build quality is excellent. This laptop is solidly built; the only way the laptop will even flex is if you directly push down on it. And even then the flex is slight.

I hope this review helps.

-A. McKinney

I just received my laptop a few days ago and it dropped $30 in price since then, not sure why, but I wish I waited a couple of days to order. About the product, Toshiba did a very good job in everything, but forgot the acoustics parameter. It could be because the the triple core needs constant cooling, but the fan is on at full speed about 90% of the time. This is a big deal for me because it is just too loud and it gets to the point where it's annoying. Performance, weight, sound and battery life are just as specified, but too bad noise level was never mentioned anywhere. I had laptops with loud fans before, but usually the fan is on only for a few minutes and then turns off. This is not the case for this laptop, the fan will be on almost all the time and is very loud, even when I am not doing anything and the laptop is just sitting there. I am starting to wonder if my laptop has a bad temperature sensor because no one else complained about constant fan noise. I am thinking about returning it because it is way too noisy.

I love my reconditioned Dell Latitude and such a bargain. I highly recommend this seller. Other than some problems with shipping I have been very satisfied with my purchase. It is just like new, and it came with a new battery and a power cord so I don't have to waste the battery when I'm home. This is my first laptop and I love being able to take it with me. If you are looking for an excellent bargain, you can trust this seller for a good deal and will not be sorry for using them.

This laptop was a Christmas gift to someone in another state, so I have not seen it or used it myself. I was told it works exceedingly well and looks like new (which is good since it was purchased as used, not refurbished). It arrived sooner than expected and packaging was good. No damage in transit. I'd recommend this seller for computer equipment purchases.

Sony's VAIO Z-Series laptops are great in a lot of ways: compact, decent battery life, and great for travel work. The area that they fall down, however, is driver support. Sony refuses to let you install generic drivers for their hardware, and does not push out regular updates to keep pace. For example, my video card is an Nvidia, but the Nvidia drivers will not install because Sony has asked them not to allow it. I confirmed this with both Nvidia and Sony support. The video drivers are 2 years old for my card and really hinder the legs of the product.

I would definitely not recommend any Sony product with "custom" hardware that does not allow regular driver updates from the manufacturers.

Got this as a replacement for a macbook air. Wanted something that had the same form factor as the airs but could play some games when I wanted.

Pros:

Small and Light and really fast

Better Screen then Macbook Airs

All the ports you need

PMD for gaming

Cons:

Pricey

Small HD (out of the box only 60ish GB free, use mem cards for storage to help this)

Smudge magnet

Extremely happy with this Laptop, would have given a 5/5 if not for the HD thing.

Definitely the most powerful little computer available at this time. Best of all, it runs windows 7. Initially bought mac airs... but after several tries, has been running hot and draining batteries faster. According to an apple specialists, it might be because of their new lion operating system.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VPC-Z212GX/B 13.1-Inch Laptop (Black)

The laptop is everything it's advertised to be.

Pros:

FULL 1080 HD SCREEN!

HD webcam

My configuration (default processor and 4gigs RAM) scores a 5.9 on Windows Rating. (RAM was lowest score)

Reboots in under 30 seconds. Seriously.

So light and mobile for on-the-go

So powerful when at home plugged into media drive

Cons:

Touchpad is ok, but unreliable.

Sound is decent, but shallow. Bass is non-existent. But when I need good sound, I'm at home plugged into my TV or I have my headphones in. So it's not so bad.

I was looking for a small, lightweight, high performance laptop with a nice screen, backlit keyboard and SSD hard drive. The Sony Z2 delivered and I'm very happy with this premium ultraportable.

Pros

* Gorgeous 1600x900 screen, very bright and crisp.

* Full-voltage, Sandy Bridge i5 processor.

* Excellent battery life, ~4.5 hours with heavy use.

* Only 2.5 pounds!!!

* Dimmable backlit keyboard

* Full size Ethernet, HDMI & VGA ports.

* Boots up in under 20 seconds, programs open instantaneously.

* Speedy 64GB Samsung SSDs in RAID0. Although these drives are only Sata II (3 Gbit/s) this RAID setup is very fast. A 50MB CrystalDiskMark bench delivered 576 MB/s reads and 322 MB/s writes.

Cons

* Speakers are a joke, the laptop sounds like an old alarm clock. Sony includes a pair of noise cancelling earbuds to address this problem, but I'm surprised they put such horrible speakers in their high end laptops.

* Fingerprint magnet

* Small trackpad. Sometimes misses multi-touch gestures.

* Keyboard travel a little shallow

* Major bloatware! 116 processes and 46% of RAM running out of the box. I disabled all Sony and unnecessary programs/services from starting and I'm down to 67 processes and 29% RAM after booting into Windows.

Windows Experience Index

Processor 6.9

Memory 5.9

Graphics 5.7

Gaming graphics 6.2

Primary hard disk 7.8

I've had the laptop for three months and I'm very happy with it. I considered the Samsung Series 9, ASUS Zenbook and the Apple MacBook Air, but neither one had all the features I wanted. Not to mention they all use low-voltage processors. The performance of this laptop is on par or better than many high-end 15" laptops and it's only 2.5 pounds! If you can live with sub-par speakers I would recommend this laptop.

I chose the 5 star rating because it deserves nothing less. The included apps are mind boggling. The set up was a breeze. It is rapid in the search mode and super easy to work with. I would recommend this highly. It has more features than I know what to do with. I will be learning how to use features that my previous computers did not include for a long time. Buy one! It has windows 7 which is easy to use. I tried my sisters laptop with windows 8 and it sucks! It is not a joke that windows 8 is something to give to someone you hate.

The Edge provides what I expected the best typing experience available, bar none. The battery runs twice as long as the usual multimedia laptops in this price range 5 to 6 hours, which really makes me happy, as you could just leave the power cord at home.

The machine feels heavy to carry around, even at 2.2 Kgs, it needs to shed atleast half a kilo to feel even remotely portable, getting rid of the dvd drive should be the first thing to do. Maybe I'll ask the service center guys to remove it.

The main disappointment is how slow the boot is, how slow the hard drive is. Often the windows explorer fails to display files in a folder! It takes eons to display the folder contents at times, and thats super frustrating! Overall speed once the system is running is perfectly fine, browser tabs and office software run fast enough, but you do see the system running slow from time to time, I'm guessing a very slow hard drive as the culprit.

Since they dont give you a Windows dvd, I've tried reinstalling from the recovery partition but have failed. Will take it to the service center for reinstall, and hope the machine runs faster after removing the lenovo bloatware.

The machine ran very cool for the first 4 months, and has just started to get mildly warm now. You wont hear the fan running at all though, very silent machine, except the clackety of the keyboard.

And yeah, the touchpad is useless, doesnt register clicks most of the time, and this is a Thinkpad!

We have been using this since Sept of 2011 and it just works. So far it can really handle all the task we thow it. It's true that it is a kinda heavy, but that is to be expected. I also use it to play combat arms online without . I'm planning on replacing the current 320GB HD WITH A 120GB SSD for improve performance.

I gave this to my mother -what a horrible out-of box experience. She was confused by all the bloatware, the updates failed and the disk got corrupted, so now it goes through check disk and a failed update every time she starts it. So now I think she'll have use the recovery partition and start again from scratch. My advice -spend the extra money and get a Mac. It's worth it.

The computer arrived in good conditions. It is very fast.

The only problem that I have is the noise of the cooler fan, but I download from the webpage of Dell an update for the Bios and now it is fixed and works fine.

Thank you.

Laptop out of the box was great, I purchased it on sale for 699! However after a month of owning the laptop starting randomly losing power and turning off. Contacted tiger direct and since I had owned it for 35 days instead of under 30 they would not replace it, instead giving me a refund which I suppose is better than naught. I'm unsure if my issue was a defect specific to my computer or to the series itself.

The wide open always-on fan is the result of an old outdated bios. Dell will remotely install bios version 7 or higher that will fix the problem. Win 8 requires a learning curve, but it can be annoying out of the box. The sound is excellent and the speed decent. I actually found Dell support refreshingly helpful and efficient. The battery mode is more than adequate (approximately 5 hrs)

Cons: If you need a backlit keyboard, blu-ray reader/writer, or SS drive you would have to pay twice as much. I am experiencing a constant noise from the hard drive area, even when the hard drive seems to be resting. That and a slight electrical buzz on the outside chassis has prompted me to send it to Dell service department at no cost. Fingers crossed.

I purchased this laptop recently for school purposes. So far it's running beautifully, and I haven't had any problems with it. Windows 7 is good, much better than Vista at launch. The only big issue I have with it is the sound: it's not that good, but I've heard that other L505 laptops have the same issue, and the problem is usually fixed with drivers. The problem here is that I think BestBuy started selling this piece early, so it's not supported yet on Toshiba's website.

I found it at BestBuy for $550 before tax, which is considerably lower than other places. Try to find it for that price if you can. If you cannot, then wait until it's supported on the Toshiba website.

I purchased the gs6000 last weekend. The salesperson recommended the Toshiba gs6000 with the AMD processor over the computer I was going to purchase with the Intel processor. That left me confused since I had not heard of the AMD processor. I went home and did some research on AMD processors. The AMD won hands down in almost all reviews I read, excelling in graphics. So far, I love the Toshiba. It's very quiet. The touch pad was scrolling at times, which I thought was not working correctly until my step daughter got on it and informed me the right side of the touch pad was made to scroll! I have always owned a Dell. One thing I really like about the Toshiba is that the fan vent is on the side, keeping the bottom much cooler than my old Dell where the fan was on the bottom. The only complaint I would have is the keys are not concave, which I am used to. Just a preference. I mainly use it for photography. So far, it's great!

I helped in buying this laptop for my mother as a replacement for an old 2001 computer she was struggling with.

After setting it up for her I spent a day experimenting. Here is my assessment of the Satellite L505D-GS6000:

Pros:

it runs smoothly on Win-7 with a minimum of the balky behavior experienced with XP

video and video card are excellent

the webcam is much better than expected

battery life is well-inline with specs

comes with Microsoft works, which is perfect for those not wishing to spend a lot of money

on software they won't use, such as the Office Suite

Cons:

speaker, though turned up to maximum did not allow hearing of media player

64-bit software limitations are still severely limiting

cooler will be needed, unless you like replacing the hard drive every 12-24 months

The sound quality can easily be improved with cheap speakers provided by Microsoft and Logitech, two reliable providers. The cost would be in the $30-40 range.

When I used Vista 64-bit in July 2009, I found it impossible to find replacements for expensive upgrades provided by Norton (antivirus), Webroot (Spysweeper) and others. Many technical software providers, such as AutoDesk require complete upgrades such as over $800 for AutoCAD Lt 2010. To my surprise, Win-7, which was a vast improvement over clunky Vista, would not allow me to run AutoCAD Lt 2007. I purchased AutoCAD Lt 2007 for about $1000.

Here's how I met the challenge. First, I went back to Win-7 32-bit, although this will cost me RAM; you need 4G minimum for Win-7 anyway (not 2G they said in 2006 this happened before with MS XP!). I run a gamer machine with 8G, so I can tolerate using it all to run 32-bit Win-7.

With 64-bit Win-7, it's different. You will find that the new and improved Internet Explorer has a pretty good firewall according to PC magazine. However, I recommend using the Norton Internet Security package that comes with the Toshiba L505D-GS6000. It runs much smoother than the original Norton software of 2009. Next, you should add CCleaner, which is an excellent tool for removing cookies and such for free; go to CNET or another reliable free software site with less chance of picking up spyware.

Unfortunately, you will find than many 32-bit softwares won't run such as Avast! Free Antivirus. You will get warning that the software did not load or than no warning at all. Look for the software on your computer faceplate. If it isn't there, it probably didn't load. You can check using Control Panel too.

I'm advising everyone owning a laptop to buy a cooler. I've owned laptops for years and the new duo-cores run very hot; hot enough to eventually destroy the hard drive, CD player and even the CPU. You will want a fan-driven cooler because the so-called passive coolers don't do the job. I've tried both and you can expect to see a 20 F improvement with a fan unit compared to half of that with a passive unit. Believe me, it's cheap insurance. A cooler will cost about $30-50 and a new hard drive will cost about $200, so you do the math. I prefer a Targus twin-fan unit.

My only complaint is that the laptop makers haven't caught up. The fan for most laptops draw air in the bottom through a tiny 1-2 inch grated spot in the lower upper left corner of the laptop and expell at the side. Wouldn't it be nice if the cooler fan were located near the inlet? A push-pull system would improve cooling. When it gets really hot, i.e., in the 90's, I use a wash cloth and ice pack to cool my computer for web-brousing. The wash cloth goes under the ice pack to catch humidity collecting on the ice pack. This works well.

This laptop works like a dream! This is my 2nd Toshiba laptop and though I had my heart set on a Satellite Pro (just because, LOL), this, to me, was a much better value for money ($530.00 before tax, from BestBuy). It has worked beautifully from day one and has never given me cause for regret.

My first laptop (Toshiba Satellite also) came with Vista and gave me no end of headaches, to the point where I had to change to WinXP and upgrade the memory. (After this, it worked great.) Because of this, I was a little wary of Win7 but I shouldn't have been no problems there at all. It recognizes everything I stick in it (except for my HP printer, but it was easy to get the drivers online) and I've had no thought of upgrading the memory it came with, something I've had to do with every other computer I've owned.

I must also mention how much I like the keyboard beautiful, wide keys and a number keypad (!!!), which my previous laptop did not have and which was a constant source of grumbling to me.

My one and only complaint about this product would be the speakers quite frankly, they're terrible! But no biggie for me, I simply use external speakers.

Overall, great product at a great price!

This truly is the best laptop ever. 64 bit OS, 4 gigs of ram, huge hard drive, amazingly fast cpu, perfect screen size, and extremely light! Not to mention this bronze color is really nice too. The other 2 people who reviewed this said they are returning it because they cant see the keys? Sure, the f1-f12 keys are very difficult to see. But return this amazing laptop because its difficult to see that a function key is labeled "f1" is rediculous! As long as you know how to count and have used a computer before this is the best laptop !

I read some amazing reviews of this laptop. The only one I found that had anything negative to say was S.K.'s review here on Amazon. And he's absolutely right. I also returned the laptop to HP (who offered me a $70 credit to keep it, take note). There are 3 basic design issues which, for me, make this laptop unusable.

1. Keyboard. The keys themselves are a bronze color and the key symbol is black. It makes it virtually impossible to see what the keys are. An unbelievably stupid design decision. Having read S.K.'s review, I thought that maybe the keyboard is back lit, thus making it easy to see which keys are which. The keyboard isn't back lit. Even with good over head light, the keyboard is very difficult to read. I know I tried.

2. Screen glare. Gone are the days, it seems, when laptops came with a readable, easy on the eye, matt finish LCD screen. This laptop, like so many I looked at, has a highly reflective plastic coating which completely covers the screen. Yes, it will protect the screen but the reflections it picks up from everything else to the sides and behind you are incredibly distracting. If I'd wanted a mirror, I'd have bought a mirror.

3. Screen tilt. The screen does not lay completely flat like other laptops I've had in the past. This one goes back to about a 120 degree angle. I sometimes use an external screen with a laptop so need something which can lay flat and not get in the way of the external screen while I use the laptop keyboard in front of it.

Issues #2 and #3 I could maybe have lived with, but the keyboard issue was a deal breaker for me. A great pity because this laptop has a great spec for a great price. HP, what were you thinking?

I bought a Toshiba A305-S6916 instead. It has an almost identical spec to the DV5-1250us. It too suffers with issues #2 and #3, but it was a little cheaper. The small saving will be used up buying an anti-glare filter for the screen. Not much I can do about the tilt. Oh well.

I had to just give up my 17" screen HP laptop, which over the course of three years, melted down it's own screen, had a bad hard drive and also system board issues. Now I have a DV5 which I cannot get the tracking pad to stop hopping all over my screen, going haywire. The worst tracking pad in the industry. It makes it virtually impossible for me to write an email or a document since the system jumps around the screen and performs functions which I have not commanded, I cannot eve cut and paste or copy and paste without it taking me about 10 minutes to do so after catching the pointer. It is unbelievable. I have to work with this system with an exterior mouse. Which means the level of mobility for my laptop is limited since I have to use an external mouse. Even the controls to disable the pad do not work. Until HP gets their driver and their tracking pad under control, I would reconsider this purchase, unless you like playing hide and seek with the mouse pointer and playing "where will I end up in at any moment on my screen?" I hope that they are working on it.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV5-1250US 15.4-Inch Laptop

This is a terrific computer, but has an extremely strange flaw. The keyboard is illegible. You have to strain your eyes to see the letters and characters printed in light grey on a grey background. With all the fuss made in the description about the design and form factor, it is mind blowing that can they make such a ridiculous error in design.

At first I thought, no biggie... I'll get used to it. I like the graphics card with 512 megs dedicated, the 2 AMD Turion 64 bit processors, the 4 gig RAM, the 400 meg drive. Unfortunatley I have now come to the realization that this is a deal breaker for me and will return the product. Too bad.

First off, I came from owning a Dell 9100 Inspiron--we're talking 9 pounds, just for the laptop, nevermind the power cord and case and any other accessories. I thought of going down to a netbook for what I usually use my laptop for, but then I thought: "What if I wanted/needed to load my Adobe design products? So I thought, although I may not, I should get something that is powerful enough to handle some of my design work, but still be very portable.

This is a nice little computer. The feel of the keyboard is good. The screen is excellent. The processor speed seems fine, even though my Dell had a 3.2 processor. Somehow or another, I keep making the screen reduce in size. (Probably just need to get used to what I'm doing.) The speakers are not very loud. All in all, I think it is a good value for the money.

The audio in this laptop is the WORST! When you open some programs while you listen to music, the audio gets cluttered! and its very annoying... Also, the FAN in this laptop is ALWAYS ON! No matter what you do, the fan is always running.... making it very uncomfortable to take notes on classes etc.. since it produces a lot of noise which will force you to put the laptop to sleep! I do not understand why they programmed fan to run all the time... I understand the laptop produces heat, but that does not mean the fan has to run all the time and make it uncomfortable

I've had the laptop for a little over 2 weeks now and I am very satisfied with what I received, especially for the low price of $585. I'm a college student and the laptop satisfies every need. I have not tried many programs which heavily utilize resources such as the adobe cs5 suite but the PC has easily passed every test so far without stumbling once.

Pros:

The laptop is very small and compact making it very portable and easy to travel with.

The battery life is quite remarkable and surpassed my expectations based on other reviews. When on the "balanced" power option, the laptop does 3hrs and 30 minutes of continued use easily.

Good web cam quality. Face recognition software is a nice addition

Headphone jack sounds amazing with headphones, I've compared this laptop with my Ipad's sound with the exact same pair of headphones and this is the winner by far.

Nice, clean and simple hardware design.

Cons:

The speakers on this laptop is absolute crap, my previous laptop was an HP with the integrated Altec speakers which were pretty amazing. This is a huge step down.

The first 2 days that I listened to music on this laptop, the music would freeze for a half second and make a buzzing noise which was EXTREMELY annoying. I did some research and many others seem to have this problem. Since then the laptop has sorted itself out.

Excluding the slight audio problems, I have no regrets about purchasing this product so far and would recommend it to any person who is looking for more than a net book but less than a Heavy duty laptop.

For some reason I found this laptop $200 cheaper than anywhere else at the time. Christmas gift for the family. works great larger screen for the size of laptop. I was looking for something that wasn't too bulky, but I didn't want a tiny lap top. Also has built in DVD burner player. great inbetween size. I'm not taking the time to look up specs now, but as I remeber this had better performance and more memory than other ones I was looking at. Great PC for the money.

Review of Toshiba Portege R835-P83 (Intel i5-2435M Processor, 4GB RAM, 640GB

Toshiba Portege R835-P83
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

This Toshiba is only the 2nd new machine I've bought in the past 8 years. The other, another "thin-and-light", is a Sony Vaio S-series. Compared to the Toshiba, the Sony is a slightly heavier alternative, with a higher resolution matt-finish screen and hybrid graphics. There are plenty of reviews out there that focus on the R835 by itself, running Windows, so I'll try to primarily make this review more useful for those who are cross-shopping the Sony and planning to run Linux.

The R835 out of the box is an extremely well-executed machine. It delivers all the power of a modern mid-range laptop, including an optical drive, in a package that is as small and light as many so-called "ultrabooks", and provides 7+ hours of battery (movie viewing would probably cut it to 4-5, easily enough to still see a film or two). The case is very light for a laptop in this category, yet still feels reasonably sturdy. Amazingly, the included Windows 7 installation is burdened with very little crapware.

Downsides for the R835 include a low-resolution (1366 x 768) screen that offers only mediocre brightness, horrendous speakers (standard in this category), a high-glare glossy screen (this is subjective of course; many people prefer actually prefer this), a mediocre touchpad, and lack of a physical "airplane mode" switch. Of all of these negatives, the biggest let-down for me is the screen resolution. A screen height of 768 was the industry standard all the way back in 1995. Since then, that minimum expected height expanded to between 800 and 1024, before the TV "high def" (which in the world of computers is actually "low-def") revolution pushed it back down to where it is now, and in this era of "ribbon" menus and add-on toolbars that seem to sneak onto your system in multiples of 3 if you so much as blink, 768 lines doesn't go as far as it once did. Hopefully Toshiba will address this in the future, now that Apple's "retina" displays are threatening to raise people's expectations.

As a Linux machine, the R835 is near-perfect. Xubuntu installed easily and runs flawlessly, and was able to re-size the Windows partition with no issues. Support for all hardware was present by default, including the scroll-edge of the touchpad, although the vertical scroll speed is too slow compared to the horizontal scroll speed. There must be a way to adjust this, but I haven't taken the time yet to do it, so can't say for sure. Linux's power management of this machine also seems excellent. Battery life is still the same great 7+ hours that I get in Windows, and the machine runs cool enough when idle that cooling fans remain off. Boot-ups are extremely quick, although Grub got a little confused by the non-Linux partitions present, requiring an edit the boot menu to remove an invalid entry. Camera and microphone quality are reported as being surprisingly good by users on the other end of Skype sessions. Overall, running Linux on the R835 makes for an extremely easy-to-live-with laptop.

Comparing the R835 to the Vaio S yields different results depending on whether or not you can tolerate Windows. A warning about the Sony: it comes laden with crapware that is extremely difficult to remove. So, if you don't mind using a tainted Windows installation, and if you need the extra 3D power of the Radeon and want the better screen (it's a brighter, matt-finish, 1600 x 900 screen), then it's worth a look. The Toshiba's advantages over the Sony include the following: slightly smaller/lighter, less expensive, longer battery life (expect about 5 hours max in Windows with the Sony, unless you use the "sheet" battery, which doubles that but at the expense of extra size/weight), a touchpad that's less prone to accidental bumps that screw you up while typing (plus there's a "touchpad disable" button, which the Sony lacks), and a far sturdier-feeling LCD panel (the Sony's is FLIMSY!).

As a Linux machine, the R835 has an enormous advantage over the Vaio S. The Vaio's power-management features, the Radeon graphics, and the touchpad are all supported badly or not at all, to the extent that it's far better to run Linux on the Sony inside a VM under Windows than by itself (which, IMO, is kind of like building a pyramid upside-down). Battery life, even after powering-down the unsupported Radeon chip (which starts up in a powered-on state in Linux even though it can't really serve a purpose!), is only 60% of what you get in Windows. Expect a maximum of 3 hours without the sheet battery, less than half of what the Toshiba offers. Add to that the constant noise from the Sony's fans, which are never able to fully disengage in Linux, and you have me, wishing I wasn't so attached to the Sony's superior screen so I could just be satisfied with the Toshiba.

I should mention that one capability that both the R835 and the Vaio S offer is Intel's wireless display, and unfortunately, I have not had a chance to try it out at all on either machine, under either Windows or Linux.

I thought about giving this only 4 stars because of my distaste for this short/wide 1366 x 768 resolution that has become so popular, but they did so much else right with it I finally settled on 5. Overall, of all of the machines in this class I have looked at (powerful thin-and-lights with an optical drive), the R835 is the best-executed and offers the best value.

Wanted a lightweight windows 7 laptop for travel to replace my 6 yr old one. This one is great except for the small keys but I can live that. also the screen has a lower resolution (which seems to be standard ) than my old Sony (of course it cost me 2K vs less than $500 for this one) This 13" is half a pound lighter than my Sony (it was only 3.7 lb) and both have dvd drives.

Best Deals for Toshiba Portege R835-P83 (Intel i5-2435M Processor, 4GB RAM, 640GB

Bought this for some school work and light gaming purposes and its been amazing so far. The battery lasts for usually 6 and a half hours of constant work involving the internet at highest brightness. With wifi off and brightness lowered you can expect 9 or over hours of battery life. Gaming cuts it short to maybe 2 and a half hours on newer titles like Fallout: New Vegas, but for the most part you shouldn't be playing those games on battery power, no matter what laptop you have. Its very fast and connects great to the internet, and the keyboard has very good sized keys for fast typing. It can run lots of the newer games very well and any older game at high settings. I don't think I've had it get uncomfortably hot yet.

Some minor complaints I have are on the stability, mouse and the space bar. The little silver things to the bottom right and left of the screen wiggle if you try to, the middle part of the screen will flex slightly under moderate pressure, there's no scroll wheel or equivalent(the keyboard itself is just small enough you can use arrow keys just fine though), and the space bar squeaks when you use it sometimes )not super noticeable, and I think this might just be on mine because I haven't seen anyone else mention this in a product review.

Despite these things, I definitely would recommend this to any of you out there looking to buy a nice computer for not too much money.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Portege R835-P83 (Intel i5-2435M Processor, 4GB RAM, 640GB

I've had the computer for 3 months, and it's recently had problems with the battery. The computer won't hold a charge, or sometimes won't even recognize the battery. When plugged in, sometimes the icon will flash to show the battery is charging, sometimes it shows "no battery is detected." Either way, this means that I have to keep the computer plugged in at all times, which is very frustrating. I've tried basic trouble-shooting steps, reinstalling the driver on the device, thinking the computer wasn't recognizing the battery. No dice. I've never had this problem with another laptop. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend this laptop.

Since I don't play game much, the notebook is competent for all that I am doing right now. Take into account its size, I apprechiate its capability to expand my work by facilities it is equiped, usb 2.0, esata, usb 3.0, vga, the CD rom, the card reader...while it is no heavier than some ultrabooks.

There are some shortcomings though. It has no bluetooth. and the cooling is not perfect (well it is OK for such a small and light one). the color of the joint of the screen is not compatible with the entire design for my opinion.

In general, the product is great for me and well meets my need.

I got this in December 2012 and by the fall of this year, it was having a major issue and I was told it is probably the mother board. I hadn't, and don't use it that often, so there is no reason anything of the magnitude of a mother board should be going out on it. It also is very slow in connecting with Internet Explorer and sometimes dosen't connect at all, necessitating that I shut down and redo the whole thing. I contacted Amazon and they deferred, saying that it's a third party seller and would not help me in any way. For it to go down in less than eight months, with only very mild use, is ridiculous! I'm no computer expert, far from it, but even I know that I should not be having a problem this severe, in such a short amount of time. I know I will not buy from this company again and I recommend to others to steer clear of this company.

Turns out that it was the mother board. It would have been 350 to repair it and I only paid 200 for it. I say again, DO NOT buy from this company!

Honest reviews on Gateway M465-E Laptop CoreDuo - 15 Inch Screen - Wifi

Well, there are a couple of problems with this laptop. The microphone stays on all the time and I keep getting a white screen for my background. I do realize these are probably software/driver issues, but it is very annoying. This may explain the very low price I paid for the laptop. Otherwise, am happy with the timeframe of the arrival.
