I have this laptop for 2 weeks already and I am really glad because this helps me in my work and study. This laptop look simple but the way it functions is really fast. One of my students dropped this laptop from my desk but lo and behold nothing happened. I had it checked just to make sure but everything is perfect! Amazing! So durability wise its so good. Its fast with the internet. Picks up wi-fi so fast. The webcam is ok too. The picture resolution when I play dvd or from online is very clear. The design is just right. The touch pad is amazingly smooth. Its not sensitive but just right. Vista is good in this laptop. Before I forget, this laptop doesn't get hot fast on my lap. Excellent! It runs quiet too. All in all I don't have any problem with this.

Toshiba laptops have a big time power plug issue (internal power jack pulls away from housing preventing plug insertion). Mine failed within 4 months of use. It is a obvious design problem which Toshiba continues to ignore. Type in Toshiba Laptop Problems in Yahoo search engine. Its a problem that will NOT go away. Too bad...besides this issue it's not a bad machine. Customer support is way bad!!!

This laptop is nice. It's a little heavier than I expected but I guess the only way to get one that's not heavy is to buy a little tiny one. One thing I don't like about this laptop is the battery only lasts 2 hrs or so. It didn't say anything about battery life on the description when I bought it.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L305-S5924 15.4-Inch Laptop

This is actually my first Toshiba, the first Laptop I have ever purchased and actually the first computer I have ever purchased. I am an IT manager and we can make anything work and usually take hand me downs. My Dell was getting long in the tooth so I was looking to replace it. I didn't want to spend a boat load of money so I did some research and found this laptop. Toshiba Laptops have a very good track record so I decided on this one. Let me tell you this is a nice laptop. Setup was quick and painless and it is nice performing machine.

The camera isn't the best in the west but that wasn't a purchase factor for me anyway. If this is low end it's a great low end machine!!Toshiba Satellite L305-S5924 15.4-Inch Laptop

I bought this product as a replacement for my Sony VAIO that I been using for 7 years. I've been using it for three weeks now and I find it cheaply made. For one, one of the key is not working. Second, it gets sratch so easily. I've taken it overseas this past few week and had to find alternate computer to use because "A" keyboard letter sticks. I guess you get what you paid for.

For the price this is a great laptop! So far so good. I got it up and running out of the box in no time. The speed of the computer seems pretty good, haven't run any extremely resource heavy stuff yet-I will later, Ill update in a few months. A few pros and cons for you:

PROS:

VERY LIGHT! I'm surprised that with the size of this, it is not heavy at all.

Beautiful ScreenThe colors and video look great!

Pretty good battery life-I watched a full movie on one charge, and a few hours of regular internet surfing and work.

Pretty thin-for the price, I thought Toshiba would put this hardware in a clunky package... I was wrong.

Stays cool-my last laptop got pretty hot, especially when burning CD's or other heavy stuffthis one barely gets warm!

CONS:

Keys on the keyboardWhat you think you'd see on a kids laptop, plasticy and clunky. C'mon Toshiba-is it that much more expensive to put somewhat nice keys on this thing?

Speakers-terrible.... perhaps I was spoiled by my last laptop-they are almost handheld radio quality.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with this purchase. Also considering this price, it really cant be beat (If you don't mind the cons).

**********UPDATE*********** MAR 2011

I am still pleased with the laptop. No major performance issues yet.

However, I have another con that I MUST add. Quite frankly I am disappointed that Toshiba, who are not exactly novices in the laptop field, would do this. There are NO USB ports on the right side. This might not seem like a big deal, but if you want to use a mouse (not everybody likes the touch pad), you have to buy one with a long cord, or a wireless mouse. My retractable cord mini-mouse was useless with this laptop-too short.

Your USB cords get jumbled up because they are all in one place on the front left side. I would have bought another laptop at a comparable price if I knew that. Well, there ya go. Thx!

Bought this laptop at bestbuy in store, paid 349 plus tax. Brought it home pluged in and charged battery, inserted my cd from our existing router, and it basically set itself up to pick up router. Set up a couple usernames for family members and off we went to the internet, without a hitch, cheap and easy to operate, so far. We have a nice desktop dell in downstairs family room but was gettin old to run down and check something out fast, downstairs. So we were lookin for something decent size screen, fast speed, ,easy to operate and setup, we can have some portability around the house. This is a nice laptop so far, kids 8 & 11 have found it easy to operate and can keep an eye on what they are into, when it is in the kitchen. So far so good, cheap, easy to operate and portable, just what we wanted.

There are two ways to judge this laptop; first relative to its competition as an entry level laptop that is basically the first step above a netbook, secondly relative to its price value.

Listed here at $396 the verdict on price value is easy-wait and shop around. There are a host of laptops one step above this (athlon II dual core/3 gig ram/3 usb) that can be had in the $350-$400 range with just a little shopping around.

Now flip the context to entry-level value and the tale becomes a bit more interesting. My impressions of this are still somewhat brief as I am using it essentially as a loaner so I'd have something at my apt. while my regular laptop is in the process of being replaced due to faulty hardware. Judging it from the price range my parents found this at (289.99) this holds up much better.

The hardware is very basic, a 2GHZ single-core Intel Celeron processor with 2 gigs of RAM, 250 Gig Hard drive, 2 USB ports, and that's about it. It does have a few luxuries however that make it quite nice in the basic laptop department.

1.LED+low power processor+ only 2 gigs of RAM= Solid battery life. I have not taken this to the duration of the battery, but after about an hour of browsing the internet on battery alone without lowering display brightness or taking any other power-conserving steps the machine still had an estimated 4 hours of battery life remaining. The low power usage also means this machine has so far ran extremely cool compared to the two other laptops I've owned.

2.Nice keyboard-My first laptop was an older Toshiba Satellite that served me well for about two years but had a somewhat cramped-feeling keyboard considering it had a 15.4'' display and 10-key. This one doesn';t have as nice a feel as my HP, but still is fairly nice and the 10-key is an added bonus.

3.Installed software-In addition to the now standard 64-bit Windows 7 they also included a nice feature of making Office 2010 not simply a short-term trial, but instead adding a stripped-down basic version of word and excel that has no expiration date, treating the full version of office more like an update.

Final verdict (aka tldr version)--

Given these aspects of the machine mentioned above this is not going to be supplanting anyone's desktop or higher-end laptop any time soon, and listed at $396 on Amazon much better machines can be found for the price. But in the right sale (say just at or under $300) and setting this could be the perfect machine for someone looking for a budget machine to fill basic needs (web-browsing, word processing, playing music--assuming a small investment in speakers) or someone looking for a cheap secondary machine to take on the road with them and as as a netbook with improved display/keyboard and no need for an external cd/dvd player.

I decided to get this @bestbuy after helping my mom shop for a laptop for my brother before Christmas. Works great for everyday computing/school and video converting. Was disappointed in volume loudness so I did some snooping and found a fix.

Right click on the speaker icon in the lower right area of the taskbar. (next to the power and internet connection icon)

Click "Playback Devices",

Click on "Speakers" to highlight it,

Then click "Properties"

Then the "Enhancements" Tab

Then check "Loudness Equalization"

then Apply and OK

Worked for me and increased volume to a much better level.

Hope that helps those that this issue annoys.

Overall the best laptop for the price ($299) once the loudness issue is addressed.

Webcam and mic would have been nice but I usually never use the webcam on my desktop. I have a "Sony Electret Condenser microphone ECM-DS70P" I bought off eBay for 99 cents+ shipping that works awesome with Google Voice when plugged into the mic input. Easy fix that is small and portable.

What's great about it: Low price, Toshiba/Japanese reliability, Fast, Widescreen

What's not so great: Webcam and mic would have been nice but not needed.

While I do have some issues with this laptop, for the price, it is definitely worth it. I got it as my laptop to take with me to college my freshman year of college. Also bought a desktop, but wanted an inexpensive laptop for the portability. I weighed my options and got the toshiba satellite c655.

I'm not going to waste anyone's time so I'll get down to the pros and cons of this laptop.

Pros:

-Size is perfect to fit in a backpack or briefcase, absolutely no problems there.

-2 USB port, an SD port, and an ethernet port. (Standard on most laptops)

-The mouse pad!!! (It has multi-touch technology similar to a mac. 2 finger scroll to scroll up or down and pinch to shrink or enlarge.)

-decent battery life, an hour and a half when power saver mode is off.

-The keyboard feels nice, keys are soft, but do not feel fragile.

-It has a number pad. (I could never have a computer without one.)

Cons:

-Download time is atrocious. (Took me 15 hours to download software for a class when my roommate had it in under 2.)

-The multi-touch can be unresponsive, but I still love it.

-As far as I've seen, there is no way to adjust the sound on the keyboard, you have to open the speaker settings

-There is not enough contrast between the mouse sensor and the laptop casing. (I often think I'm not touching the mouse sensor, when it turns out that I'm writing a paper and all of a sudden I'm typing halfway across the page.

Neither pro nor con:

-I think Toshiba cut the price on the laptop by putting an average processor into an outstanding laptop. This makes performance very slow compared to my desktop. (I didn't want to spend the money on a more expensive laptop, so am I at fault here? I think so, not Toshiba)

All in all, I am very satisfied with the performance of this computer. There are a few minor problems, but for the price, I doubt you'll find a better buy. Toshiba makes phenomenal laptops, and I am a happy customer.

Would give it 5 stars, except that I am rating Amazon's product, not the laptop itself. I got it on sale at BestBuy for a cheaper price, and this was over 6 months ago. If Amazon dropped their price on this, I would certainly bump the rating to 5 stars in a heartbeat.

I bought one of these laptops as refurbished from Lenovo outlet

because it was a very good deal: quad-core core i7, three USB 3.0

ports and a msata slot for a msata SSD at good price.

With hyperthreading and quad-core its CPU gives eight logical

processors, which is very convenient for demanding multitasking

purposes.

One problem I find with this laptop is that the laptop freezes

if the laptop went to sleep with a DVD disc in the DVD drive.

In the beginning, I thought this can be a serious bug and

considered returning it to the Lenovo outlet.

After several hours of try, it figured out that the freeze

was due to sleep with a DVD disc. I decided to keep it because

it was not a deal breaker. While the freeze issue could be

one of the reasons why it was returned and went for sale in the outlet,

I still think it is a good deal for me.

I bought this laptop with hopes it would suit my small business needs when I travel.

Let's talk about the pro's first.

Pro's:

Keyboard is nice, has the numberpad and fingerprint scanner which I liked

The computer is very fast, with the i7 3632QM processor it never felt like it was trying, everything responded very quickly

Con's:

There are lots of con's I don't know where to begin.

On first start-up fresh out of the box, it crashed. I restarted the computer and tried installing updates and then it crashed again, upon start-up.

I contacted my seller Laptop Authority' and they walked me through how to fix this issue using a special software update from Microsoft. Once updated with this 'special' update the computer crashed less, I guess that was a good thing?

Anyway, the computer was unreliable when it came to overall system stability. I never knew when it was going to crash next.

It would always freeze when it went to sleep so I had to put my sleep mode to 'never' and just pray I had battery life while working.

It had problems connecting to the internet all the time, some places I go it would connect right away, other places that had WiFi (work offices) everyone else had their connection but mine would stay unconnected 90% of the time as it dipped in and out of connectivity, this was by far the most frustrating thing for me to handle. I had 3 IT personnel look at this issue and they were all baffled.

It was not a hardware issue because it would connect for a few seconds at a time, if it was hardware it would not connect at all.

The mouse trackpad was a pain in the butt, it was overly sensitive and difficult to use because it was like an on/off switch.

The sound quality wasn't the best, since I am on a Lenovo hating rampage right now I will add that little tidbit of disappointment.

I spent hours trying to diagnose all these little problems and in the end I was fed up and just returned it.

Laptop Authority was responsive to me and sympathetic for my frustration and I was issued a full refund in a timely manner, although I did have to pay shipping back to the supplier.

Overall, this computer left a sour taste in my mouth and I don't plan on going with Lenovo in the future.

I bought this laptop for my daughter. I-7 quad core processor, extremely fast and great at multitasking. She should make it all the way through college with this laptop. The crispness of the screen is amazing. It comes pre loaded with windows 7 and includes disks to upgrade to windows 8, though personally I have no intention of going to 8. Great laptop great price:-) I love the quality products that Lenovo makes!

It's a netbook, so that means you shouldn't expect a lot, but it gets the job done. I've never had any signicant issues with it. The keyboard is a little smaller than a laptop, but unless you have really large hands it shouldn't be a problem. I actually bought an Asus before this one and had to return it because the mouse pad was too close to the space bar (which made the mouse jump around every time I hit the space bardrove me nuts!). This one is a lot better because there's a nice gap between the two. Another thing I like is that it's fairly light which is nice when you're traveling. Overall I'd say it's a pretty solid machine. It's good for using the internet and word processing. I'd recommend it.

Jus got the laptop today and it has been peforming great thus far with no defects, keys offer a good feel when typing however feel kinda flimpsy for my taste but the arragement of keys is good. average speaker audio responsive touch controls and good images from the built in 1.3 mp camera. the LED display is large and bright. hardware got a 4.0 rating from windows 7 with the lowest score of 4.0 for graphics. overall, the material doesnt feel very strong but this gives you the benefit of a light machine that easy to move around with. i'm loving it so far and would recommend it to anyone except hardcore gamers. great price too.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Pros:

* Nice looking thin form factor

* CoolSense Technology is top notch, laptop just doesn't get HOT (warm but after long use)

* Good mix of ports (2xUSB 3.0 and single USB 2.0, HDMI output -> video AND sound to your TV)

* Very quiet

* External battery can easily be replaced by user

Cons(iderations):

* Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad is finicky under Windows 8

* No optical drive (but advertised as not having one just beware)

* battery life on short side ("up to 4 hours")

* Upgrading memory basically requires you to take entire laptop apart

HP has put out an entire, and sometimes confusing, range of what are called "Pavilion" or "Envy" laptops, usually coupled with the words "Sleekbook" or "Ultrabook." This specific model, the HP Pavilion 14-b101us Laptop Sleekbook, is advertised as, and is at the low end of the spectrum of this class of laptop. Windows 8 is optimized for touch screens (e.g., tablets) and is actually pretty nice. If you don't have a touchscreen, you can still benefit from Win 8's interface design if you have a good touchpad WHICH THIS UNIT DOES NOT HAVE!!! The built-in Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad is just bad. Even with tweaking settings, I couldn't get it to consistently operate with double taps, and two finger scrolling (which I love) is spotty and sometimes is interpreted as a "pinch" and changes the size of your screen. After a LOT of tweaking, updating drivers, etc., I've got the touchpad working better, but still not as consistent and smooth as I'd like.

I like this class of laptop as an entry level, non-gaming general purpose computer. The specs should indicate the obvious, that this isn't a powerful graphic gamer. So, given similar price points with other laptops of this class, I recommend you look for ones with the "HP Imagepad" such as the HP Envy 4-1110us 14-Inch Ultrabook or any other similar unit so long as it has "HP Imagepad" in its specifications. If it's got "Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad" I'd run for the hills. My Envy 4-1110us with the "HP Imagepad" is a lot of fun to use with Windows 8 and I'd actually recommend you check that unit out if the price is close to this one.

Again, this is a very nice intro level unit, and with an external mouse it works very nice. I suspect the hardware was originally designed with Windows 7 in mind, and Windows 8 (which I like) has been grafted onto a unit for which that may not have been an optimal decision.

Also note that to upgrade memory requires an almost complete dismantling of the entire unit. This is the second HP Sleekbook I've used where this is so (the other is the Envy 4-1110us mentioned above). This isn't one of those "open the memory access plate on the bottom" kind of laptops.

If this were a laptop running Windows 7, I'd probably give it 4 stars. The deal breaker for me really is the touchpad which you can't replace. If you get a good price and don't mind using an external mouse, this could still be a nice unit.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program It's light. It stays cool! It works faster than my Food Processor and it has Windows 8. I love this guy. I recently had another model in this line which I passed on to my granddaughter and thought I'd not find another one as good but I was wrong. This 14 inch has an I3 processor. Plenty of Ram and a large harddrive to store things. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but the startup and shutdown times will stun you on this new operating system.

I floundered around til my granddaughter took pity and showed me how to get to the desktop I was familiar with quickly and then I was unleashed. I'm actually getting used to the app start screen now and use it more and more, but that is turning this into a review of Windows 8 and this is about the laptop itself. This is also one of the few new models that has a removable battery so you can change them out if you're a constant user like me. A lot of the new ones are built in and when it's dead you gotta plug it in (make sure you check that). The touchpad is opened up a lot with this computer because of the Windows 8 and by that I mean it has a lot more functions than just point and tap. It's under four pounds with the battery in! The display is stunning for a 14 inch widescreen and the sound is very good for a laptop.

One of the best things about it that the HP maintenance software runs unobtrusively in the background and right off the bat my laptop had a problem with the fan suddenly spinning up quite audibly and locking the laptop up completely somehow until you had to reboot. This happened twice and I was about to throw the thing away when I did a third reboot and the laptop informed me that it was updating the bios and not to turn the power off. I was surprised at no popup informing me of the fact beforehand but I guess with the laptop frozen that would have been hard to do. At any rate the bios installed flawlessly and after the restart the laptop fan has never acted up again nor has the notebook frozen since. I can only surmise that HP was on top of the problem in hardware conflict or whatever it was and took steps to correct it immediately. Since we pay quite a bit for these toys I really appreciated that fact I can tell you.

The 4 gigs of ram and the 1.5ghtz processor make it sail along and the 500gb hard drive is more than adequate for my needs. The built in hi-def camera and software keeps you looking good in all kinds of light when skyping or whatever you do. The fact that it stays cool is really neat too and I can just lay it on my lap without any uncomfortable heat building up. All in all a great little machnine that does what it's supposed to. It does not come with a cd/dvd drive which seems to be the standard now. I guess everybody uses flash drives and external hard drives for storage of media etc now. It has an outlet for plugging it into your HD TV with hdmi outlet and you can watch videos (in true 1080p with surround sound (dolby dts etc) which surprised me again) and see pictures or listen to music etc. It holds it's charge for about 3 to 3 1/2 hours of constant use. It's also pretty tough and the hard drive has extra protection. I tend to drop them so that helps. With the windows 8 you have to add some software to do some things but that's easily done and available.

Overall I'd recommend it without hesitation. Especially after the hardware issue was self-resolved so quickly and efficiently!

Best Deals for HP Pavilion 14-b010us 14-Inch Laptop Sleekbook (Black)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program ...and that's about it.

One of the challenges of reviewing something like a computer is that the reviewer must consider it on the basis of what it's trying to be, not on the basis of everything a computer COULD be. This machine is not intended for gamers or musicians or video editors.

The Pavillion 14-b010us is everything a basic computer user needs and little beyond. By 'basic computer user', I mean someone who primarily needs an internet/email machine. A student will also fall under this definition, as this machine is ideal for throwing in a bag and taking to class for note-taking, etc. It's light, thin, and it stays cool even after prolonged use (one of HP's big selling points). In brief, this is highly portable no-frills computing.

What potential buyers need to know is that 'no-frills' MEANS 'no-frills.' There's no optical-media drive (CD, DVD, etc.), so any burning, movie-watching, or software installing will need to be done via an external drive. This is becoming less and less of a need for upwardly mobile computer users, but it's still a consideration that merits mention. Beyond that, performance is what you'd expect from an entry-level laptop: the picture is fine, but it's not exceptional; same with the webcam. The audio output is particularly forgettable, but that's to be expected from a machine at this price-point.

Performance is adequate. I have a battery of tests I run to gauge the performance of machines, and this one did about what I expected. Photoshop works fine, if a little slowly; video-editing is basically a no-go unless the user uses SD footage in an entry-level program like Movie Maker. Don't bother trying to run games newer than four or five years. If you stick to tasks in the realm of basic computing, you'll be fine.

Win8 is an adjustment, and although this is not a review of that operating system, the potential buyer just needs to know that there's a bit of a learning curve for the average migrant from Win7/Vista/XP. This OS really does seem to thrive with a touchscreen, and the Pavilion 14-b010us doesn't have one of course, so there were a few times when I caught myself trying to navigate by touch.

In summary, then, this is a fine, solid, unspectacular machine for everyday computing; it has a nice aesthetic and is highly portable. For the current price (a little over $400 as I type), it's a good buy.

First of all let me start off that this is a budget laptop, but it's still freakin' awesome. At first I felt overwhelmed with the start page, making the jump from my Compaq Windows Xp to Windows 8 was quite an experience. But right off the get go I fooled around with the apps, got my e-mail set up, messenger, and my desktop just the way I want it and BAM! This laptop became my home.

I use this everywhere! At the diner, at work, home by my bed, and even in the toilet watching my anime.

If I let it load it can stream the 1080 HD! Clear and smooth...

Look, I bought this laptop for five reasons;

1-To watch Netflix.(OH! the app is already pre-loaded!)

2-To watch Hulu.

3-To watch Crunchyroll.

4To read the news, (FANTASTIC APP FOR THAT TOO!)

5And to participate in a variety of social medias.

For all this reasons, it's mega-awesome.

Now, the things I don't like.

Microsoft Word is crap.

Paint is crap.

In fact, many basic windows tools that are free in XP are either crap, or you have to pay for them. Yes you heard me, they have found a way to monetize simple basic tools that were awesome and free in XP. Thank god for Google, the internet, and fellow nerds who devote their time posting freeware. I love you Google.

Besides the greedy HP jerks trying to monetize EVERYTHING, this laptop, is awesome.

That is all.

I am a college student and I was looking for something powerful enough to multi-task yet compact and light enough to tote around. I did a lot of research and this was the most bang for the buck. It has been great in every way. Ignore the posts about the loud fan, it isn't THAT loud, besides the biggest problem with laptop failure is overheating. What would you rather have? I highly recommend this product.

Although this has a triple core processor, it has no L3 cache, so it's going to run slower than some dual cores that are available. It also gets super hot under load. It was almost enough to burn my finger. The exhaust port felt like a stove, and I only had it for about 3 months, and I was hitting temperatures above 65C at load. It's just sad.

The high-gloss black plastic is annoying. It attracts oil and dirt from your fingers and it will get messy fast. The bezel surrounding the monitor cracked within one month of purchase.

The graphics card leaves much to be desired. It won't play many modern games, even at low quality with every detail setting disabled. I got about 2 frames per second in Dead Rising 2. I got about 10 fps in Mafia 2. It barely plays Fallout Vegas at low detail.

All in all, the worst $620 I ever spent in my life. Should've went with an HP again. My older HP laptop is not only faster, it's still running like the day I bought it. The L645D is the third Toshiba I've had with major heat problems. The specs look attractive until you investigate. I won't buy from Toshiba again.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4058 14-Inch LED Laptop (Fusion Finish in

So far so good. Everything works well. Over all I think it is a good little laptop. It is quiet and does not overheat. My two least favorite things about it would be the speakers and the battery life. I listen to alot of music and I think the sound quality is poor but because it has many ports I can connect external speakers. I think that it is important to be able to connect external devices, printer, camera and back up storage. The Toshiba tech support is also helpful. I like it and would recommend it. I've had this laptop for almost three years, every day, for on average 6+ hours a day.. It's had it's bumps in the road but for a heavy user such as myself to have a laptop last this long is downright impressive.

It shipped with Windows Vista, which at the time was crap, so of course I downgraded to XP right away. It ran wonderfully, and eventually I dual-booted to Win7, to which I found ran much faster. It also came with just 2GB of ram, which got upgraded to 4GB.

To give you an idea about my usage; I'm a graphic design hobbyist. I usually have Google Chrome/Mozilla Firefox open alongside Photoshop CS4 AND Paint tool SAI, while running Windows Live! and Trillian in the background with no problems. I've had it permanently connected to a Wacom Tablet for most of it's life and never once had an issue with that. It even runs some 3D graphics programs at good speeds.

For gaming, the hardware isn't the best, which knocks off one star. It can however run most MMO's on medium settings (FlyFF, Aika, Aion, etc) and WoW on high, so kudos to this little guy. Bigger, more demanding games have no hope, namely AMNESIA and The Last Remnant did not want to run on my system due to graphics card requirements.

Like mentioned above, the hardware isn't all that great. It totes a 1.44ghz processor, which isn't ideal for a gamer, and the integrated graphics card can be limiting at times. But for the price I paid for it, and the amount of time I've used it on a daily basis, the fact that it runs beautifully still makes it a great product.

I am really satisfied with this computer. I've had it for over four years, and it still runs like the first day I bought it. It even survived a totally unexpected spill a little after I got it (good thing I knew what to do with it when this happened). Of course, I've been taking really good care of it. The only issue I've had with it is overheating, but as long as I dust it out every so often and use a cooling pad, I rarely run into problems. I think I might buy a new Toshiba when I decide to replace this one.

However, I feel like I could buy a little more for what I spent for it, now. Not that it was high-priced for a computer.

Overall, it is a great computer.

To use this computer with any speed and responsiveness, I wiped Vi$ta and installed Ubuntu, on which it ran very nicely. However, the 590 Radeon X1200 drivers are "legacy" and, while they're improving for Linux, they may be nonexistent for Windows 7.

had this laptop for almost 4 years now... and almost everything is not original. i take good care of my stuff so i was surprised that i had to replace the monitor, keyboard, battery, plug port twice, and have had to get 4 hard drives. the monitor went completely black, the battery lasted 5 minutes on a full charge, the plug port stopped recognizing that it was plugged in and thus wouldn't charge... twice, and the hard drive has crashed 4 times. disappointed with this product and never buying another toshiba. not worth the time, aggravation, and money fixing this worthless computer.

Got this a couple days ago and am satisfied thus far. It's a budget laptop for sure. The screen will be difficult to see in direct sunlight as it reflects a lot. You can make it a decent cheap machine though by adding in some extra ram and maybe even putting a ssd sata 3 in it. For less than $50 I upgraded the RAM to 8gb and saw a substantial jump in the windows ratings.

This is the ram kit bought. However, this kit gives you 2 4gb sticks of identical ram to what it came with. Same samsung serial number and everything. You really only need 1, so if you can find one... go for it.

I've had this a couple weeks now and I'm still as impressed as when I opened it. The 3rd generation i5 Ivy Bridge helps keep the temps low, and the 8 gigs of RAM is a noticeable bump over the usual 4 gigs that seems to be standard in ultrabooks these days. I often write with it on my lap and heat nor weight has ever been an issue. The laptop also comes with an ethernet adapter if you're looking to plug in. Wireless range is good, about what you would expect.

The real sell for me is the solid state drive. Being a 128, you can expect around 100gigs of free space. Windows 8 boots in just over 3 seconds. I'm not a fan of 8 so I went with a dual boot with Ubuntu. Ubuntu boots in a little over 4 seconds, very impressed between the two.

Battery Life is pretty solid. Between writing and just surfing the internet you can expect between 7-8.5 hours. Heavy multimedia you can expect right around 3.5-4.

Screen is gorgeous and respectable at 1600 x 900. As the previous reviewer mentioned it isn't a touch screen but if you're seriously thinking about picking this up you should already be well aware of that.

I just received the Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D-A06US 15.0-Inch Laptop. It is very impressive. Only problem is that it doesn't have a touch screen. How is it possible for a high-end Windows 8 Ultrabook to not have a touch screen? What happened? I can only guess Samsung wants to unload all of their old Windows 7 laptops by loading them with Win8 and a big smile.

I'll try it for a few days, but I suspect I'll end up returning it.

Update Apr. 6, 2013

I have returned the NP900X4D-A06US and replaced it with a Series 5 NP540U3C-A02UB.

Don't get me wrong, if you are ok with not having a touch screen, the NP900X4D-A06US is a very impressive machine. It is beautiful and light and there is a lot of attention to detail. It is very quiet and even at high process utilization it only gets a little warm. The only meaningful downside is that you end up with only about 100 GB of free space out of the box, but you probably thought about that already considering the computer comes with a 128 GB SSD.

Pros: Incredibly fast I-7 Processor, High-end Nvidia graphics card for the price range, sleek backlit keyboard, high quality harmon/kodon speakers, nice metallic finish

Cons: Screen resolution is lacking, ever-so-slight scratching sound

I would have given this five stars had it not been for the lackluster screen resolution. Honestly, everything about this laptop would make you think it's a laptop priced over $1000 (I got it for $750 off Rakuten which used to be buy.com), except for the screen resolution. My mom also bought a laptop recently from Dell for $350 and it has the exact same screen resolution now tell me there isn't something wrong with that. But otherwise, it's a powerful mid-range laptop that will probably last me for a while.

Toshiba is a multimedia company and their laptops are designed to please your senses with supremely bright and gorgeous displays and decent speakers while still maintaining crisp performance. Toshiba claims to be the first notebook maker with color LCD's, it is easy to believe after seeing the screen in person and their LCD's are consistently beautiful regardless of which Toshiba you pick. GPU performance is anecdotally impressive, I DON'T PRETEND TO BE A GAMER SO ANY IMPRESSIONS ABOUT ITS GAMING PEFORMANCE OR COMPATIBILITIES WOULD BE EASILY DETECTED ATTEMPTS TO b.s., but I did stress it by simultaneously playing two USB connected DVD's and a BluRay and it was excellent without jitter (see the uploaded video review).

Toshiba Satellites are the least expensive Toshiba laptops and their "C" series is the least expensive Satellite, so buying the cheapest Toshiba notebook made results in some immediately noticeable sacrifices such as the creaky flimsy flexing case and an integrated mouse track pad that feels worse than using a floating potato to move the cursor. I hate the flimsy keyboard, it as unpleasant as flossing your gums with sandpaper because the larger keys and chiclet imposter keyboard aren't comparable to someone accustomed to luxurious ThinkPad keyboards but I can't find a ThinkPad/Lenovo comparable to Toshiba horsepower unless I want to spend twice as much.

At least a floating potato is predictable but Toshiba has found some way to smuggle the cheapest Synaptic pads from North Korea since I can't imagine any other country willing to make such an annoying version of a normally reliable input. I've used other trackpads without issue, Synaptics is the largest manufacturer of most TrackPads, but I have never used a Synaptics or any trackpad as misreabl as these are. Do yourself a favor and buy a/use an external mouse Targus Bluetooth Comfort Laser Mouse AMB09US (Black with Gray) and you'll also avoid blowing an angered blood vessel since any amount of track pad usage leaves a blocking layer of human sweat that renders the trackpad useless until cleaned or avoided completely. Some models might not include integrated BlueTooth and upgrading the mini PCIe adapter isn't easily done in the C Series unless you plan to split the case open at the seams and likely void Toshiba's oversensitive warranty policy (read the appended comment for an imperative fact about protecting your warranty status).

A cheap $5 USB B/T SANOXY USB Bluetooth Wireless Adapter for HP, Gateway, eMachine, Dell or ANY Laptop/PC Running Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 200, XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7plug still spares two USB ports for a jump drive and recharging your BlackBerry.

Wi-Fi performance is excellent with an included Atheros AR9285 adapter Atheros AR5B95 AR9285 802.11B/G/N Half Mini PCI-E Cardthat starts out of the box shouting loudly at a better than average 16decibels. For the curious I elaborate in further detail in the appended review comment.

Don't be afraid of upgrading the RAM because boosted to 16GB it comfortably becomes a mini data center unto itself by installing a dual 2012 Server DataCenter build and Hyper-V shoulders as many VM's as you want.

Unbuntu runs extremely nicely except my chosen distro (BackTrackR3) doesn't immediately appreciate the 1368 wide display and drops to a stretched 1024x768 usually reserved for traditional 4:3 square displays.

The same wildly Windows compatible Microsoft 3000 Wireless combo Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 set runs without issue even at bootup before loading Windows or any operating system and is fully supported in Unbuntu w/o the necessity of installing a driver or editing configs. Connecting the jump drive sized USB dongle enables remote KB/M control from a verified 90 feet in an Marriott ballroom in case you have the necessity to tease your children or present your thoughts to a larger than economy sized auditorium.

I bought this laptop after much research and thought it had the right combination of hardware and software for the price(i bought it from another online store for $318) Well it wasn't long before i regretted the purchase. I can't believe i spent a whole day doing maintenance and tracking down a bad/missing file on the windows website. I looked up its history on its own event logs and found it had been having issues from the time it was produced! It struggles with the most basic of tasks, probably because of the horrendous amount of garbage software from Toshiba. You think im kidding? Log on to the internet and watch where it sends you. The touchpad is one of the worst i have ever tried to use and the plastic used for the body looks and feels like its from recycled material. Please dont buy. If you do, try it out and put it through its paces so you can see for yourself. Just make sure you dont let the return period elapse or you will be stuck with a major headache

This laptop was on sale at my local retail store. I was in the market for one, so I picked it up. If you can find this for a decent price? Pick it up! It's a lot better then a Dell. It's solid!

The only issue with it, and the main reason I'm writing this review: is the sound system. This is literally the worst sound I've ever heard. My Kindle Fire has better sound.

A solid laptop for a really good price.

If you want a computer for surfing and general home or business use you are not going to find this at this price in any store.

Windows 8 is pretty useless on a laptop without a touch screen but is pretty easy to get around so it acts like Windows 7.

Like the built in camera and this laptop weighs less than my old Toshiba.

Dislikes as always is the pre-installed try and then buy crapware that seems to come with every computer ever sold.
